The Transformation of Jean Valjean Exemplified in Les...
All humans have different morals that change based on their environment and circumstance. Jean
Valjean, in the novel Les Miserables(1961), changes from someone with confused morals to a man
with more morals than most whom with respect learns to love and share. The protagonist's
transformation begins when the bishop recognizes Jean Valjean's human soul that is capable of
goodness. When he is put out into the streets, Valjean goes from place to place being rejected for
being a convict until he meets the bishop who sees him as a common person, "That men saw his
mask, but the bishop saw his face"(75). Even though people might be good, they don't always see
someone's true soul. The bishop's simple act of kindness and deeper understanding ... Show more

"Forget not, never forget that you have promised me to use this silver to become an honest man"
(33). Even though Valjean does not recall this promise, he seals it by taking not only the silver but
the two candlesticks as well. After Valjean gets wealthier, he sells all his possessions of value except
for the two candlesticks that the bishop has given him. "It was a room very well fitted with
mahogany furniture, ugly as all furniture of that kind is, and the walls covered with shilling paper.
They could see nothing but two candlesticks of antique form that stood on the mantle, and appeared
to be silver" (54). The constant presence of the candlesticks reminds Valjean of the bishop and what
he has done for him. "He felt the bishop was there, that the bishop was present all the more that he
was dead..." (75). The candlesticks are meaningful and important to Valjean, which makes these
objects symbolic. The candlesticks have an even deeper meaning than anything else, because the
bishop gives them to Valjean as a symbol for change and the promise he makes but never recalls.
Everyone needs someone to love and care for as well as someone who can return that love and care.
When Cosette comes into Valjean's life, it makes him feel something he didn't feel in a long time,
"When he saw Cosette, when he had taken her, carried her away, and rescued her, he felt his heart
move" (123). At this point, she becomes more than just a girl but another symbol in Valjean's

Pomegranate Tree In The Kite Runner
Almost like how the seasons change, as time went by the depiction of the pomegranate tree
exemplified the development and changes in Amir and Hassan's relationship in, The Kite Runner by
Khaled Hosseini. Early in Amir and Hassan's so called friendship, the two of them often spent their
time under the pomegranate tree at the top of the hill, where in the bark of the tree Amir carved, "
'Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul.' Those words made it formal: the tree was ours" (Hosseini
27). The tree was something that brought the two of them together and during this time their
connection was still jaunty. However, as time went by and the seasons changed, their relationship
transformed, and so had the meaning of the pomegranate tree. Each time they

The Importance Of My Favorite Teacher
Throughout my grammar school years, I was exposed to many different teachers who come to mind
when I think of the term 'favorite', but one teacher stands above all my 'favorites'. My eighth grade
English and Literature teacher at St. Mary Catholic School, Mrs. Nancy Lindsey, earns the title of
my favorite teacher because of reasons which seen innumerable, but I can easily narrow them down
to three. Mrs. Lindsey truly cared about her students beyond the academic level, she respected her
students yet was as strict as an old school nun, and she would go above the minimum call of duty
day in and day out.
In the duration of my eighth–grade year, I constantly felt an overwhelming sense of care exhibited
by Mrs. Lindsey. It wasn't just a casual "how are you Jake?" or a "what did you do over the
weekend?" or "did you complete all of your homework." She exemplified this quality by being like
my second mother. She constantly asked about my life at home (which was considerably rocky at
points) and helped me throughout the arduous decision process of moving to New York City or
staying in Colorado. What teacher has ever done that? She also exemplified this quality by being
able to see through me like an open book. She understood my struggles with anxiety and
overthinking, and every time I tried to hide them behind a wall of happiness, she would see right
through it and break it down. She recognized my lowest points with those struggles and would
attempt to pull me right back up.

The Evil Of Imperialism In George Orwell's Shooting An...
Shooting An Elephant
In George Orwell's narrative, "Shooting An Elephant," Orwell recreates his experience as a soldier
trying to end imperialism in the country of Burma by shooting an elephant. George Orwell recreates
this experience of imperialism being evil through the use of literary devices.
Orwell opens his essay by reflecting upon the evil of British imperialism before shooting the
elephant. Orwell's hatred for imperialism is exemplified when he mentions "was hated by large
numbers of people," revealing that the British were outnumbered by the Burmese even though the
British were in charge. Another detail that helps illustrate his hatred for imperialism is when he
mentions "no one had the guts to raise a riot." This shows that ... Show more content on

Orwell expresses the evil of British imperialism; this evil imperialism is continued from before
shooting the elephant to him hunting the elephant.
Orwell illustrates, again, the evil of imperialism, this time while he goes to hunt the elephant. The
evil of imperialism is exemplified when he mentions "despotic governments" showing that they
have complete control and power. Additionally, when he discusses the "bazaar" it helps symbolize
the Burmese economy. The "elephant had suddenly reappeared in the town" and "the Burmese
population had no weapons" helps symbolize the elephant being the British empire is stronger
compared to the Burmese. Another detail that helps illustrate the evil of imperialism is when he
mentions that the British had "destroyed somebody's bamboo hut, killed a cow and raided some
fruit–stalls" showing that the British will do anything from burning villages to oppressing natural
resources to colonize the country of Burma. Orwell continues by mentioning "man's dead body
sprawling in the mud" which symbolizes the Burmese that have been oppressed. In addition,
oppression is symbolized when Orwell mentions "put its foot on his back and ground him into the
earth" showing the poverty the Burmese have to suffer through. Orwell's use of the word "crucified"
helps reveal the virtuous

Good Vs Evil In Lord Of The Flies Essay
Humans: Good vs. Evil William Goulding exemplified the ugly side of humanity when Lord of the
Flies was released. It was a controversial topic that many thought was untrue and would never
happen. It has been proven that Goulding is right on humans morphing in certain times and
situations. Scientists and sociologists have studied this in the Stanford Prison Experiment and
others, and it has been shown humans can turn away from their moral compass. I believe humans
are bad because absolute power corrupts Jack like the Nazi leaders. We also see hysteria, if built up
enough, can cause deaths and tragedy as in Simon's death and in the Salem Witch Trials. One
characteristic Goulding showed in the book was power corruption. Although Ralph, the real elected
leader wasn't corrupt, the man who wanted power, Jack, was corrupt. He was so angry for not
having the power and tried to enter his opinion. Jack also attempted to assert authority that he never
had whenever possible. He was jealous of Ralph. Ralph tried to create a ... Show more content on

In the beginning of the book, the hysteria begins with the claim a "beastie" is in the forest. The
hysteria is built more when the littlun with a birth mark disappears from their camp. This event
inflamed the hysteria of the "beastie" and made everyone realize they might not live to make it off
the island. The hysteria culminates when the group visits Jack's settlement on the other side of the
island. Meanwhile, Simon was away from the group and found the "beastie" was the rotting corpse
of a paratrooper. At the camp, Jack caused hysteria to boil over in chanting "Kill the beast, spill his
blood". Simon, at this point, stumbles out of the forest and the demonic chant and hysteria made
them go and murder Simon there on the beach. The hysteria enveloped the children of the island like

The Traits Of Personality Can Be Exemplified By Two Traits
According the Carver & Schreier (2012), "the trait approach to personality can be exemplified by
two traits" (p. 52). One trait can be described as consistency while the other trait usually describes
an individual being different from their neighbors. Vollrath and Torgersen argue that the extraversion
and neuroticism traits are substantially present among individuals who are likely to participate in
"risky health behaviors such as smoking, excessive drinking and drunk driving, drug use and sexual
behaviors" that risks the overall wellbeing of a person or a person who lacks both of the following
traits in larger quantities. They are generally regarded as individuals who can withstand temptation
and are less likely to participate in risky behaviors. "Extraversion seems to relate to having social
impact." (Carver & Schreier, 2012) People with high levels of extraversion seemingly engage with
and enjoy being with other people and often are the assertive ones in the group. People with high
levels of neuroticism react differently in situations of stress, oftentimes unable to cope with
situations. Torgersen (1995) "proposed a typology defined as priori" (p.288). "This typology
represents the possible combinations of the Big Three personality factors, which result in eight
unique types" (Vollrath & Torgersen, 2008). This study examined that high neuroticism and low
constraint played a role in high risk behaviors. Torgersen's definition of constraint is what the United

The Ontological Status Of Properties Essay
In recent times, the discussion regarding the ontological status of properties has been imbued with
renewed interest. Indeed, one's understanding of properties has significant implications and
consequences on their metaphysics of philosophy of the mind. In this essay, I will largely bypass the
debates disputing the realness of properties altogether, and instead focus on trying to find a
satisfying conception of properties. The reason is twofold: 1) I would like to entertain accounts of
property realism that do not suppose properties to be universals; and 2) objections against properties
as universals fail to offer adequate alternatives. First, I will provide a traditional account of
properties as universals, and the objections against properties due to this characterization, as well as
some simple rebuttals against the objections. Then, I will discuss some stances regarding the nature
of properties, mainly property minimalism and maximalism, and provide my personal
interpretations towards them. I hope to show that although properties as universals can be
problematic, the alternative of constructing them as particulars has issues of its own. Defining
Properties as Universals Properties, sometimes characterized as universals, are thought to exemplify
the "relations of qualitative identity and resemblance among individuals". In other words, the
common quality which unites particulars would be a property shared amongst them. Those who
argue in favour of properties usually do so

Exemplified Leadership
For this essay, I could simply give you a laundry list. I could tell you how I have exemplified
leadership by being assistant concertmaster for EMU's Youth Symphony or by being co–captain of
my high school soccer team. I could show you how I have demonstrated perseverance by
continually trying my hardest to excel in school or how I have have shown persistence by refusing
to walk away when a program for my Engineering project would not work or how I still play the
violin and sing even after not getting into states for both. I could even tell you about my service to
my church by playing violin twice a month on the worship team or loving on special needs kids
through Young Life's Capernaum. Yet again, I could tell you about my innovative work with
Woodrow Workforce and Rehabilitation Center and my creation of an assistive wheelchair sensor to
help patients with visual neglect at the facility. But I do not want to simply spit out information like
this.

Definition Essay: What Is True Courage?
What is true Courage? From my perspective, Courage isn't something that is inside of every single
living human being; neither given to anybody. Following, courage requires individuals to do
something out of their comfort zone. Courage is also determined by one's beliefs. Second, courage is
exemplified by people going against the grain. Lastly, courage is mistaken and falsely measured by
being replaced with responsibility. To begin with, courage is a choice. For instance, when Martin
Luther King jr. chose to voice his opinions, he developed a trend that stuck. More and more people
were following. He was responsible for many of the developments that are in place for all blacks
today. The following was an example of true courage. Second, courage is exemplified by individuals
going against the grain. In particular, Donald j. Trump depicts courage all the time. Some ways

The Human Tendency Towards War Exemplified in William...
Thomas Hobbes once said, "Hereby it is a manifest, that during the time man live without a common
power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war . . ." (Hobbes 64).
Thomas Hobbes, an enlightenment thinker, believes that humans are born evil, and without a good
leader, everything will turn into chaos. William Golding's Lord of the Flies rightly gives examples
on Hobbes' viewpoint. Throughout the story, it shows the process in which the boys slowly loses
their civilized self and turn into savages, how the boys would do anything just for survival or just
purely entertainment. William Golding shows the innate evilness within humans by employing
religious allegory as by using events, characters, and settings that ... Show more content on

Furthermore, the characters in the story parallels to other characters in the Bible. When Ralph starts
condemning himself, Simon cheers him up by saying, "You'll get back to where you came from"
(Golding 111). According to the Bible, only Satan causes condemnation. By interrupting Ralph and
giving him hope, Golding illustrates Simon as Jesus because he saves Ralph from being torn apart
by Satan. The quote also suggests Simon knows something Ralph does not know. It shows that
Simon may have the ability to foresee future events. Later, when Simon talks to the beast, or Lord of
the Flies, it says, "I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?" (Golding 143). The
Lord of the Flies symbolizes Satan. In the New Testament, after baptism, Satan temps Jesus with
various things for forty days. Simon is the only person that is able to speak to the beast on the island.
His innate goodness helps him to be able to speak to the Lord of the Flies without being afraid,
which is something only Jesus can do. Throughout the story, Simon displays various traits of Jesus
such as being deeply spiritual, compassionated, and non–violent. The setting of the story are also
related to stories in the Bible. The island is described as "The air was thick with butterflies, lifting,
fluttering, settling" (Golding 28). The image described resembles to that of the paradise. Just like the
Garden of Eden, the island has an ideal weather, an abundance of fruits,

Summary Of Sharon Drapers Copper Sun Polly
In Sharon Drapers Copper Sun Polly is a young white girl working for the Derby family with Amari,
a young African slave owned by the Derby family. Amari and Polly are similar in age, however,
Polly has a huge advantage in life due to her race, while Amari has no choice but to serve as a slave
to her white masters. Despite their differences, both Polly and Amari are strong individuals fighting
for freedom. Polly can be described as having good morals although they are not always apparent.
This is exemplified when she beings to realize how hard life for Amari, Teenie, Tidbit, and the other
slaves are when she says, "how can people live like this?" (Draper 131). This shows that while Polly
has been taught that she is superior to African people she still recognizes them as human beings.
Another time Polly's good morals shine through is when she realizes she loves Amari, Tidbit, and
Teenie. This is exemplified when Teenie suggests that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is exemplified when Polly, Amari, and Tidbit are on their way to Fort Mose, Amari remembers
her mother, and Draper writes, " She must concentrate not on what was lost but what must be
found." (Draper 225). This shows that Amari, unlike Polly, had so much taken away from her that
hope for her future is one of the only things she has for left for herself. Another Time Amari is
depicted as hopeful is when she is with Tidbit and Polly on their journey to Fort Mose when Clay
finds them. Clay says he is going to severely punish them and Draper Writes, " Amari felt her heart
quicken, but she refused to let Clay see that she was scared" (Draper 230). This shows that similar to
Polly, Amari is willing to put up a fight against racial barriers because while Amari was a slave to
Clay she still has the courage to stand up to him. Thus, Amari can be depicted as hopeful and willing
to put up a fight just as Polly is depicted as having good

Symbols In The Kite Runner
Discussion Posts for Kite Runner Symbolism Kite: The kite is symbolic of Amir's childhood. They
symbolize both the memorable and tragic memory held from his childhood. The memorable portion
is through the friendship he gained with Hassan and the tragic portion is through the betrayal he
gave Hassan during his time of rape. The flying kites initially symbolize the freedom Amir felt
during his childhood. The blue kite specifically, represents the respect and honor he gained from his
father. It symbolized the worth he always craved, when growing up as a child. This is because Amir
had a very rough and complex relationship with his father as he grew up. Moreover, the kite
representation also contributes to the freedom Afghanistan once owned. This is exemplified through
the following quote from the text. "He had the blue kite in his hands; that was the first thing I saw.

In reference to their childhood, they would sit under the tree and read stories. As the true grew
stronger, their friendship did as well. The tree was as a special treasure for the two, because of the
memories they had attached with it. However, after the tragedy, the tree no longer held its value.
When Hassan hits his head against the tree, its alludes the idea of him showing the friendship
between him and Amir only wounded him in the end. Several years later, when Amir goes to visit
the tree, he notices it had slowly died. This symbolized what was left of the friendship between Amir
and Hassan. This is exemplified through the following quote from the text. "Then Hassan did pick
up the pomegranate. He walked toward me. He opened it and crushed it against his own forehead.
'There,' he croaked, red dripping down his face like blood. 'Are u satisfied? Do you feel better?' He
turned around and started down the hill."

Bioethics in Medicine, Exemplified by the Karen Ann...
It is accepted that the advances in resuscitation techniques, initiated and influenced the evolution of
bioethics by bringing to the fore the questions of:
(i) just allocation of scarce medical resource, health care
(ii) the nature of "being", and
(iii) the proper purpose of medicine.
The main issues that caused the emergence, or the study and introduction of bioethics was the
introduction of modern technology in medicine in the form of respirators and artificial heart
machines. The media attention to the Karen Ann Quinlan case made the issues public. The Karen
Ann Quinlan case serves as a perfect example of these new issues. She was diagnosed with a
persistent vegetative state, and her life was sustained with a respirator and ... Show more content on

This implies a downgrading of the importance of the human body.
The most important lesson learned from this case was the revising of medical treatment. Medicine
should treat patients as autonomous subjects. Thus came about the development of autonomy based
ethics principles. "Ethics needs principles – four can encompass the rest – and the respect for
autonomy should be 'first among equals". (Gillon, 2003)
The limitations regarding, "the right to life" was a topical issue at the time of the Karen Quinlan
case. The court ruled that the decision should be in the hands of ethics committees, another
important realisation from the Quinlan case ruling. Many ethics committees were formed to make
the decisions. Hospitals and all extended care facilities got an ethics committee. It was thought that
they should be the decision making body in the future. However, it is now the opinion of experts
that the authority of the ethics committees is limited. Any decision must belong to patients, and/ or
their proxy. Out of this case there has also developed advanced health directives, which led to a
society becoming aware of the need to create living wills as to what family members were to do or
not to do in conditions of "extraordinary" medical care. The power of attorney also came to the
forefront. Many people today would recognise the name of Terry Schiavo. Karen

The Bank Robbery By Steven Schutzman Summary
The Bank Of Affection Love; it's a strange and peculiar concept to the human mind. It has the power
to affect one's persona drastically; it may make the meekest individual strong and the most ardent
person frail. Many falsely accuse the power of endearment with a misnomer, often referred to as
lust. The term lust is defined as an intense desire. Between the crosshairs of love and lust, lies an
entity that is commonly seen in many folly love–struck youth. This strange facet of endearment is
best exemplified in the flash fiction story The Bank Robbery, written by Steven Schutzman. The
short story portrays the surprisingly bizarre, but tender, sense of affection between a bank robber
and a young bank teller. Through the usage of similes, metaphors, ... Show more content on

The eerie affinity between the two counterparts is best exemplified by the various types of figurative
language used by Steven Schutzman. Schutzman states "the teller, a young woman of about twenty
five, felt the lights of her streets go on for the first time" (Schutzman 1), evidently describing the
emotional impact the robber had on the teller. Figuratively, this statement is an implicit comparison
between the lights that had lined her streets and the teller's discovery of love. This statement also
foreshadows the creation of a turbulent relationship between the two counterparts, since it depicts a
"love at first sight" moment that conclusively suggests that the folly lovers will base their romance
on short–term desires rather than true love. In the eleventh paragraph, the robber is seen stating "Ah
money...you are just like love" (Schutzman 1) , evidently proving his lustful adoration towards
materialistic facets. Schutzman implies, through this statement, that this is an example of a
metaphor, since it is an explicit comparison between money and love. The author uses this
metaphor, in order to epitomize the evident unstable romance that is created between the bank
robber and the teller. This statement indirectly implies the fact that the relationship between the two
counterparts is formed due to their lustful momentary desires. In order

Characteristics Of The Greek Hero

professional athletes, and 72% saying that their heroes include teachers. (National) What are some
of the traits that might be influencing this generation to look up to a certain sect of people? Power,
intelligence, drive, empathy, all of the above? What does it mean to be a hero in today's society, and
would the ancient Greek heroes Hercules, Theseus, and Perseus still be considered heroes to modern
day societal rules. Theseus and Perseus would still be considered heroes in modern day society.
However, Hercules has bad qualities that overrule the ones that might be considered heroic.
In ancient Greek times, Perseus was considered a great hero because he exemplified great empathy
and great determination. Empathy was one of Perseus' most prominent traits. He exemplified this on
multiple occasions, one of which being when he felt bad for the titan Atlas. The Titan was punished
with having to hold up the heavens for all eternity by the gods for being the leader of the Titans in
the war against Zeus. Perseus felt empathy for him and turned him to stone because earlier in the
myth, Atlas begged to be turned to stone so that he could rest from the great burden. This shows
empathy because of Perseus. While he did worship the Greek gods, he still felt that the punishment

Philosophical Principals Exemplified in The Truman Show...
In order to understand the moral fabric of the world, it is important to question any information that
is given to an individual, instead of blindly accepting the majority opinion and giving it full
credibility and validity based on other people's opinions. Plato's work, The Republic introduces the
allegory of the cave, which is metaphorical scenario that attempts to explain the importance of
questioning norms that may seem trivial. Plato illustrates a cave where bounded prisoners have lived
all their lives in seclusion, away from the outside world. In their immobile state, they can only look
at the wall in front of them which is illuminated by a small fire that has been going on behind them.

In an interview, the antagonist claims that, "We accept the reality with which we are presented. It is
as simple as that." The quote reflects many philosophical principles that are exemplified in both The
Truman Show and in the Allegory of the Cave.
To start off, the quote addresses the underlying ignorance that is evident in both Plato's and Weir's
works. Truman was living his entire life inside a metaphorical bubble. In many instances throughout
the movie, he ignored any suspicious act that threatened to obscure and interfere with his concept of
reality. For example, as Truman was walking out of his house, he noticed a studio light that suddenly
fell from the "sky" just as he was about to get in his car. Even though he questioned it at first,
Truman did not really bother investigating or looking into it, perhaps because he was subconsciously
afraid of what he would find. He chooses not to give the random incident any importance and gets in
his car, which further proves his underlying ignorance and reluctance to accept things that may not
conform to the norm. Shortly after, the producers of the show decide to make an excuse for the set
malfunction, and it is soon forgotten. Additionally, when Sylvia tells him upfront that his entire life
is a lie, he chooses to ignore it, until he himself starts to question his life. In the same way, in Plato's

Existentialism as Exemplified in ‘the Seventh Seal’
Existentialism as Exemplified in 'The Seventh Seal'
The Seventh Seal is a 1957 Swedish film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. The film offers
interwoven storyline. It starts with a game of chess between a medieval knight, Antonius Block, and
Death – in which if Block won, Death will prolong the knight's life. This game goes on in
intermittent times.
The knight is accompanied by his squire, Jöns, as they go back to the knight's castle to be reunited
with his wife. Throughout their journey, they come across various characters and people in the
village who are struggling amidst the impending death brought about by the Black Plague.

The existence of a Supreme Being is being summoned in situations where people are in need of such
assistance. Truly a remarkable film, 'The Seventh Seal' effectively portrays this question in sight of
existentialism. God, neither the devil, was not present. There was even a scene where Block asked
the woman accused of having contact with the devil to summon the devil so that Block will be able
to ask about the about the existence of God. Block was not able to see anything. As it turns out, the
woman was falsely accused by the priest.
Block came to a point where he asked the existence of God – when he confesses to Death, disguised
as a priest – but Death himself did not give answers to this. Even at the end of the film, Death did
not explain this to Block. Quoting Block, "My life has been a futile pursuit, a wandering, a great
deal of talk without meaning. I feel no bitterness or self–reproach because the lives of most people
are very much like this." In what pursuit did he wasted his time into? Perhaps he was pertaining to
his search for the existence of God.
Aside from Block, a more existential character than him is introduced – his squire, Jöns. In Jöns'
conversation with the painter in the church, he mentioned that, "This is squire Jöns. He grins at
Death, mocks the Lord, laughs at himself and leers at the girls. His world is a Jöns–world,

to the growing number of impoverished Virginians, as well as the footprints of human liberty

How Did F Scott Fitzgerald Use Materialism In The Great...
The 1920s, or the "Roaring Twenties" as it is often referred to, is often portrayed as a time of
celebration, new culture, and changing values and behavior. Many American people were wealthy
and used their money lavishly, spending it on trendy whims and entertainment. This post–WWI time
period was also richly filled with insightful works of literature, and it is known as one of the greatest
literary eras in history. Some writers grew such a distaste for the American culture and the
materialism within it that they settled in places in Europe, mostly Paris. These writers became
known as the "Lost Generation." F. Scott Fitzgerald was a Lost Generation writer and the author of
the renowned novel, The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald used symbolism in

DOK Level 1: Pirate Ship Lesson
DOK Level 1: "Recall and Reproduction" is exemplified in the engagement component on page 7 of
the Pirate Ship lesson. Particularly in the overview section, students will be shown a PowerPoint
slide and asked leading questions that will encourage them to engage in a discussion about a Pirate
ship ride I found this part of the lesson important because students will be able to discuss what they
already know from past knowledge and experiences. Students will also get to observe potential and
kinetic energy in action which will enhance their interest in the activity. Also, this teaching method
will also help introduce students to the topic and provide the proper direction on the lab activity and
clarify any misconceptions that students may have. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students will use their results to connect the concepts from the lab to the real world. In the extension
activity worksheet students are asked to determine where the energy of the pendulum bob come
from. Students will gather information from the lecture and use strategic thinking and reasoning to
explain how energy is used to move the pendulum and where the energy is from. This level of
thinking will help students make real word connections because students can extend their thinking
by also considering how other objects that they use on a daily basis use kinetic and potential energy.
DOK Level 4: "Extended Thinking" is exemplified in the additional extension activity on page 15 of
the Pirate Ship Lesson. After completing the activity, students will identify errors in the activity and
create strategies that can improve the activity. I found this important because this can significantly
improve student's critical thinking skills. Students can have a group or class discussion on how to
improve the quality of their data and reduce standard error, which are essential components in all
scientific research that students must take into

Deep Down Dark Character Analysis
Deep Down Dark, by Héctor Tobar, clearly connects with the traits of the Grad at Grad. The five
traits of the Grad at Grad are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and
committed to doing justice. The Chilean miners exemplified every Grad at Grad trait while they
were trapped underground for sixty–nine days. The three traits that the Chilean miners showed the
most were religious, open to growth, and loving. The first trait that the Chilean miners exemplified
was the religious trait of the Grad at Grad. The miners begin to pray by themselves and later pray as
a group down in the San José mine. Tobar says, "The prayer becomes a daily ritual. They gather
each day just before they eat, at around noon, for a brief sermon from Henríquez...The prayers and
the meals are the one time each day all thirty–three of them unite" (95). The miners, all of different
religious beliefs, prayed together every day because they believed that the only way they could stay
sane. The Chilean miners did not pray to get rescued, however, they prayed for everyone at Camp
Esperanaza and those supporting them above the mine. On the other hand, those at Camp
Esperanaza were praying for all the miners trapped in the San José mine. Throughout the miners'

each other like family. The men brought water to each other every day and helped those who were
not feeling as well as others. In the daily prayer sessions, the men apologized to one another for
things they may have said or done. In the end, everyone trapped in the San José mine believed that

Literature as Encounter and Discovery, as exemplified by Hahn Moo–Sook's novel Encounter
The Italian explorer Columbus (1451–1506) discovered the American Continent in 1492. Of course,
the unknown continent had existed even before he discovered it. But through Columbus' discovery
the unknown entity has emerged above the surface of the historical waters as a "New World."
Literature is like a voyage in search of a new continent, and the author is like Columbus. In the
course of our lives, undiscovered subject matters abound like countless islands in the gigantic ocean
of awareness. If perchance such a continent is not discovered through the eyes of a writer, it would
sink to eternal oblivion. An author, therefore, is like an explorer ... Show more content on

Eventually, following his "homecoming in golden robes" as the secret royal inspector, Yi Mong–
nyong rescues Ch'unhyang, and the evil magistrate is dismissed and punished. The story has a happy
ending, as their love is fulfilled.
In contrast, the theme of the story of Simch'ong, based on a Buddhist legend, is about an opening of
the eyes, i.e., a prototype of "discovery." Simch'ong, the sixteen–year–old daughter of a blind man,
sells herself to the boat people, who throw her into the ocean as a sacrificial lamb to the god of the
sea for their protection. The filially pious daughter Simch'ong is resurrected and is betrothed to a
king, who invites all the blind people of the country to his palace in hopes of finding among them
his wife's father. The blind Sim's eyes open at the dramatic moment of his re–encounter with his
daughter. In the Asian thinking based on the Buddhist belief, "seeing with open eyes" corresponds to
"being awake and seeing through the Truth."
Modern Korean literature has inherited the spiritual legacy of the tales of Ch'unhang and Simch'ong.
One notable example is Hahn Moo–Sook's novel, Encounter1. The novel's very title and plot
correspond with the eternal themes of encounter and discovery represented by The Tale of
Ch'unhyang and The Tale of Simch'ong. Encounter is a rare novel in Korea, because it explores and

existing in the realm of fictional works. The relationship itself is overwhelmingly positive, as
fictional works have the effect of humanizing us, as we empathize ,and identify with the characters

Martin Luther King Jr.: Servant Leadership
Servant leadership is desire of someone to serve one another through certain principles. Greenleaf,
Senge, Covey, and Spears (2002) identifies servant leaders as those work are doing the utmost best
for their community. A civil rights activist and leader, Martin Luther King Jr. embodied the aspects
of servant leadership. Martin Luther King Jr. is committed to the growth of the community, a
dedicated servant leader who inspires followership and has many qualities to emulate.
Principles of Servant Leadership Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) exemplified servant leadership
through his work as a pastor and a civil rights activist against social injustices (Peake, 2013). As a
servant leader, King was committed to the growth of his community and the development of others.
He was a servant to people, committed to the work of his community. Additionally, he was
empathetic to his cause (Peake, 2013). This empathy showed that his leadership was for others and
that he understood how others felt being discriminated against. Lastly, as a pastor, he considered
himself a servant for God's work (Peake, 2013). King fulfilled his calling to serve God and enabled
others to stand up for their rights.

boastful and led by supporting others to support civil rights (Peake, 2013). It is astonishing to see
King's legacy as a leader for justice. He shaped his community to serve others and empathized with
his community and their civil rights. A leader who is supportive, strong, and committed is someone

A Review Of Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children
Gothic elements being introduced in three gothic stories and a book written by Ransom Riggs called
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Essentially about naive children with superpowers

elements, that were exemplified in both Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and gothic

were demonstrated in "The Feather Pillow" and isolation was shown in "The Masque Death".
From many of the exemplified gothic element in both selections one that was repeated was violence.
In Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in the quote "He raised the cage vigorously,
shielding himself and gave it a vicious shake. Birds nipped at his hand" (Riggs 189). This quote
clearly shows the unrestrained violence the children were exposed to, as the hollowgast continued to

Louisa May Awakening: An Early Feminist
Women's rights were a major issue in the 19th century, mainly due to the fact that women were
beginning to no longer feel content with the reality that they may always be restricted to the
conventional ideals of female piety, domestication, and submissiveness. Women wanted to begin
exercising the right to choose their own lifestyle, as well as achieve the right to vote. These notions
were exemplified in the writings of Louisa May Alcott, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Kate Chopin, who
were all renowned American novelists. With each woman being seen as an early feminist in her own
right, in a major portion of their writings, they reveal progressive ideas that were not only shocking
at the time, but sometimes rejected by many. The status of women at the turn of the century was
complicated, and exemplified in the writings of Alcott, Jewett, and Chopin.

Nationalism Vs Romanticism
Before the 1850s, Europe was plagued by revolutionary conflicts between conservative and liberal
peoples; it seemed as though the old conflicts, the same ones in which the French Revolution
spurred from, never fully faded and caused major social, political, and economic uproar in society.
However, it was these conflict related aspects of this era, such as the independence of Greece, the
Carlsbad Decrees, and the Reform Bill of England, that led people to turn to nationalism and
romanticism for cohesion. Furthermore, the relationship between nationalism and romanticism
before 1850 include the commonalities of emotional unity, idealism, and respectfulness towards
history. The aspect of emotional unity, within nationalism and romanticism, was ... Show more

An example of nationalists having remembrance of history could include how British nationalists
named the Battle of Peterloo in reference to the Battle of Waterloo. This reference is ironic because
it compares a battle won by the French and a battle lost by the English. However, even though the
romantics often chose to visually remember landscapes in which they believed would go down in
modern–history, such as the unspoiled nature of Lake District of northern England and northern
Africa, many romantics also cherished the Middle Ages in other ways, such as poetry or music. An
example of the romanticists having remembrance of history could include Eugène Delacroix's most
famous painting Liberty Leading the People, which glorified the French Revolution of 1830. In
conclusion, nationalism and romanticism, before 1850, had a strong connection of emotional unity,
idealism, and respectfulness towards history. Overall, romanticism can be seen today through global
warming and other environmental movements worldwide and Nationalism in present day can be
exemplified by national holidays and national parks or preservation

The Role of Commander in Chief as Exemplified by Washington and Jackson
The position of President of the United States was created through the ratification of the United
States Constitution. One of the many roles assigned to the President was that of Commander in
Chief. To date, that role has been held by 45 different presidents. Two of the earliest presidents
exemplified the role of being Commander in Chief of a national military by personally leading a
United States militia to combat a rebellion and by using military intimidation to quell rebellions.
Both George Washington and Andrew Jackson exemplified the role of Commander in Chief when
they faced the issue of rebellion at different times in American history. George Washington quelled a
rebellion of farmers in Pittsburgh who were protesting the "Whiskey Tax" by physically leading an
armed militia into the city. Andrew Jackson, on the other hand, threatened South Carolina with
military force by passing the Force Bill following South Carolina's resistance to federal taxes.
Following the ratification of the Articles of Confederation in March of 1781, the Constitution of the
United States was placed in effect on March 4th, 1789 ("Nat'l Constitution Center"). The
Constitution was created as a replacement for the Articles of Confederation with multiple purposes
in mind. One of the purposes of the Constitution was to create a national government, consisting of

Dracula Good Vs Evil Analysis
While several themes arise in the novel, Dracula, by Bram Stoker, the theme of good versus evil is
the primary theme of the conflict between the crew and Dracula. It is evident from the beginning of
the novel that the members of the crew are the good people dedicated to destroying Dracula
portrayed as evil. The indication of the fight against evil was already imminent even when Dracula
had not been clearly identified and were exemplified by Jonathan Harker as he says, "What manner
of man is this, or what manner of creature is it in the semblance of a man?" (Stoker 50). By
cultivating the mysterious personality of Dracula, it is apparent to readers that Dracula is and will
always be on the evil side.

them and focus on the corporeal versus the spiritual. Niccolò Machiavelli, an Italian Renaissance
writer, demonstrated a spirit of individualism and humanism through his handbook, The Prince. His
views on how to gain and maintain political power became well known, as his ruthless and realistic
views mirrored the actions of famous ruling families such as the Medicis. The ideology of his book

may encounter a transformative experience that most certainly can lead to new perceptions of others

exemplified in the poem " The Road not taken" by Robert Frost. Which conveys how discoveries
can push one into a wider world full of possibilities, which may transform one immensely

the rotten tooth symbolises the carnivorous nature of the island during the nighttime. The toxicness
of the island, forces Pi to continue his discovery for salvation in order to live with humanity, due to
the fatal repercussions of a life lived without humanity. Which conveys how through discoveries
ramifications most certainly arise which as a result alters ones perceptions of themselves and their

Likewise this concept is significantly portrayed in the road not taken, demonstrated in 'the lines " I

sense of regret in which discoveries can introduce as a result of ones choices in embarking a
discovery in which shifts ones perceptions on themselves and the wider world hence transforming

Native American Wrongness Essay
Throughout the Age of Exploration, Europeans encountered many different types of people, places,
and ideas. Due to their self–righteousness, Europeans' interactions with foreigners and people with
different opinions often went awry. During colonization, this sanctimoniousness was transferred to
Americans, leading to the fact that prior to 1754, being "American" meant being extremely zealous,
intolerant, and xenophobic. These characteristics are exemplified in Christopher Columbus and
Oliver Cromwell, both of whom were influential individuals in the New World. Americans' belief
that they were inherently superior to everyone else causes them to act as zealots when exposed to

These tendencies induced many negative judgments about Native Americans and their culture:
"European newcomers concluded that Indians lack genuine religion, or in fact worshipped the
devil". Americans' thoughts about Native American society not only exemplifies their narrow–
mindedness, but they also exhibit Americans' xenophobia due to their feeling of superiority. The
bigotry inherent in the American mentality also caused conflicts within American society, especially
concerning religion: "Most Puritans found the idea of religious pluralism deeply troubling...
ministers and magistrates were intent on suppressing any views that challenged their own". In fact,
"homegrown conflict between Catholic and Protestant settlers... produced a violent civil war" in
Maryland in the 1640's. Americans' intolerance due to their sanctimoniousness not only caused them
to despise Native American culture, but it also led to serious conflicts within American society when
people have contrasting opinions. Although he was across the Atlantic Ocean, Oliver Cromwell
exemplified the bigotry in American society: "Cromwell's army slaughtered over forty percent of the
indigenous Irishmen, who clung unyieldingly to Catholicism". As a Protestant, Cromwell was so
intolerant of differing denominations within Christianity that he massacred many Irish

The Transformation Of Jean Valjean Exemplified In Les...

  • 1. The Transformation of Jean Valjean Exemplified in Les... All humans have different morals that change based on their environment and circumstance. Jean Valjean, in the novel Les Miserables(1961), changes from someone with confused morals to a man with more morals than most whom with respect learns to love and share. The protagonist's transformation begins when the bishop recognizes Jean Valjean's human soul that is capable of goodness. When he is put out into the streets, Valjean goes from place to place being rejected for being a convict until he meets the bishop who sees him as a common person, "That men saw his mask, but the bishop saw his face"(75). Even though people might be good, they don't always see someone's true soul. The bishop's simple act of kindness and deeper understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Forget not, never forget that you have promised me to use this silver to become an honest man" (33). Even though Valjean does not recall this promise, he seals it by taking not only the silver but the two candlesticks as well. After Valjean gets wealthier, he sells all his possessions of value except for the two candlesticks that the bishop has given him. "It was a room very well fitted with mahogany furniture, ugly as all furniture of that kind is, and the walls covered with shilling paper. They could see nothing but two candlesticks of antique form that stood on the mantle, and appeared to be silver" (54). The constant presence of the candlesticks reminds Valjean of the bishop and what he has done for him. "He felt the bishop was there, that the bishop was present all the more that he was dead..." (75). The candlesticks are meaningful and important to Valjean, which makes these objects symbolic. The candlesticks have an even deeper meaning than anything else, because the bishop gives them to Valjean as a symbol for change and the promise he makes but never recalls. Everyone needs someone to love and care for as well as someone who can return that love and care. When Cosette comes into Valjean's life, it makes him feel something he didn't feel in a long time, "When he saw Cosette, when he had taken her, carried her away, and rescued her, he felt his heart move" (123). At this point, she becomes more than just a girl but another symbol in Valjean's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Pomegranate Tree In The Kite Runner Almost like how the seasons change, as time went by the depiction of the pomegranate tree exemplified the development and changes in Amir and Hassan's relationship in, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Early in Amir and Hassan's so called friendship, the two of them often spent their time under the pomegranate tree at the top of the hill, where in the bark of the tree Amir carved, " 'Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul.' Those words made it formal: the tree was ours" (Hosseini 27). The tree was something that brought the two of them together and during this time their connection was still jaunty. However, as time went by and the seasons changed, their relationship transformed, and so had the meaning of the pomegranate tree. Each time they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Importance Of My Favorite Teacher Throughout my grammar school years, I was exposed to many different teachers who come to mind when I think of the term 'favorite', but one teacher stands above all my 'favorites'. My eighth grade English and Literature teacher at St. Mary Catholic School, Mrs. Nancy Lindsey, earns the title of my favorite teacher because of reasons which seen innumerable, but I can easily narrow them down to three. Mrs. Lindsey truly cared about her students beyond the academic level, she respected her students yet was as strict as an old school nun, and she would go above the minimum call of duty day in and day out. In the duration of my eighth–grade year, I constantly felt an overwhelming sense of care exhibited by Mrs. Lindsey. It wasn't just a casual "how are you Jake?" or a "what did you do over the weekend?" or "did you complete all of your homework." She exemplified this quality by being like my second mother. She constantly asked about my life at home (which was considerably rocky at points) and helped me throughout the arduous decision process of moving to New York City or staying in Colorado. What teacher has ever done that? She also exemplified this quality by being able to see through me like an open book. She understood my struggles with anxiety and overthinking, and every time I tried to hide them behind a wall of happiness, she would see right through it and break it down. She recognized my lowest points with those struggles and would attempt to pull me right back up. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Evil Of Imperialism In George Orwell's Shooting An... Shooting An Elephant In George Orwell's narrative, "Shooting An Elephant," Orwell recreates his experience as a soldier trying to end imperialism in the country of Burma by shooting an elephant. George Orwell recreates this experience of imperialism being evil through the use of literary devices. Orwell opens his essay by reflecting upon the evil of British imperialism before shooting the elephant. Orwell's hatred for imperialism is exemplified when he mentions "was hated by large numbers of people," revealing that the British were outnumbered by the Burmese even though the British were in charge. Another detail that helps illustrate his hatred for imperialism is when he mentions "no one had the guts to raise a riot." This shows that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Orwell expresses the evil of British imperialism; this evil imperialism is continued from before shooting the elephant to him hunting the elephant. Orwell illustrates, again, the evil of imperialism, this time while he goes to hunt the elephant. The evil of imperialism is exemplified when he mentions "despotic governments" showing that they have complete control and power. Additionally, when he discusses the "bazaar" it helps symbolize the Burmese economy. The "elephant had suddenly reappeared in the town" and "the Burmese population had no weapons" helps symbolize the elephant being the British empire is stronger compared to the Burmese. Another detail that helps illustrate the evil of imperialism is when he mentions that the British had "destroyed somebody's bamboo hut, killed a cow and raided some fruit–stalls" showing that the British will do anything from burning villages to oppressing natural resources to colonize the country of Burma. Orwell continues by mentioning "man's dead body sprawling in the mud" which symbolizes the Burmese that have been oppressed. In addition, oppression is symbolized when Orwell mentions "put its foot on his back and ground him into the earth" showing the poverty the Burmese have to suffer through. • 11. Good Vs Evil In Lord Of The Flies Essay Humans: Good vs. Evil William Goulding exemplified the ugly side of humanity when Lord of the Flies was released. It was a controversial topic that many thought was untrue and would never happen. It has been proven that Goulding is right on humans morphing in certain times and situations. Scientists and sociologists have studied this in the Stanford Prison Experiment and others, and it has been shown humans can turn away from their moral compass. I believe humans are bad because absolute power corrupts Jack like the Nazi leaders. We also see hysteria, if built up enough, can cause deaths and tragedy as in Simon's death and in the Salem Witch Trials. One characteristic Goulding showed in the book was power corruption. Although Ralph, the real elected leader wasn't corrupt, the man who wanted power, Jack, was corrupt. He was so angry for not having the power and tried to enter his opinion. Jack also attempted to assert authority that he never had whenever possible. He was jealous of Ralph. Ralph tried to create a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of the book, the hysteria begins with the claim a "beastie" is in the forest. The hysteria is built more when the littlun with a birth mark disappears from their camp. This event inflamed the hysteria of the "beastie" and made everyone realize they might not live to make it off the island. The hysteria culminates when the group visits Jack's settlement on the other side of the island. Meanwhile, Simon was away from the group and found the "beastie" was the rotting corpse of a paratrooper. At the camp, Jack caused hysteria to boil over in chanting "Kill the beast, spill his blood". Simon, at this point, stumbles out of the forest and the demonic chant and hysteria made them go and murder Simon there on the beach. • 13. The Traits Of Personality Can Be Exemplified By Two Traits According the Carver & Schreier (2012), "the trait approach to personality can be exemplified by two traits" (p. 52). One trait can be described as consistency while the other trait usually describes an individual being different from their neighbors. Vollrath and Torgersen argue that the extraversion and neuroticism traits are substantially present among individuals who are likely to participate in "risky health behaviors such as smoking, excessive drinking and drunk driving, drug use and sexual behaviors" that risks the overall wellbeing of a person or a person who lacks both of the following traits in larger quantities. They are generally regarded as individuals who can withstand temptation and are less likely to participate in risky behaviors. "Extraversion seems to relate to having social impact." (Carver & Schreier, 2012) People with high levels of extraversion seemingly engage with and enjoy being with other people and often are the assertive ones in the group. People with high levels of neuroticism react differently in situations of stress, oftentimes unable to cope with situations. Torgersen (1995) "proposed a typology defined as priori" (p.288). "This typology represents the possible combinations of the Big Three personality factors, which result in eight unique types" (Vollrath & Torgersen, 2008). This study examined that high neuroticism and low constraint played a role in high risk behaviors. Torgersen's definition of constraint is what the United States ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Ontological Status Of Properties Essay In recent times, the discussion regarding the ontological status of properties has been imbued with renewed interest. Indeed, one's understanding of properties has significant implications and consequences on their metaphysics of philosophy of the mind. In this essay, I will largely bypass the debates disputing the realness of properties altogether, and instead focus on trying to find a satisfying conception of properties. The reason is twofold: 1) I would like to entertain accounts of property realism that do not suppose properties to be universals; and 2) objections against properties as universals fail to offer adequate alternatives. First, I will provide a traditional account of properties as universals, and the objections against properties due to this characterization, as well as some simple rebuttals against the objections. Then, I will discuss some stances regarding the nature of properties, mainly property minimalism and maximalism, and provide my personal interpretations towards them. I hope to show that although properties as universals can be problematic, the alternative of constructing them as particulars has issues of its own. Defining Properties as Universals Properties, sometimes characterized as universals, are thought to exemplify the "relations of qualitative identity and resemblance among individuals". In other words, the common quality which unites particulars would be a property shared amongst them. Those who argue in favour of properties usually do so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I could tell you how I have exemplified leadership by being assistant concertmaster for EMU's Youth Symphony or by being co–captain of my high school soccer team. I could show you how I have demonstrated perseverance by continually trying my hardest to excel in school or how I have have shown persistence by refusing to walk away when a program for my Engineering project would not work or how I still play the violin and sing even after not getting into states for both. I could even tell you about my service to my church by playing violin twice a month on the worship team or loving on special needs kids through Young Life's Capernaum. Yet again, I could tell you about my innovative work with Woodrow Workforce and Rehabilitation Center and my creation of an assistive wheelchair sensor to help patients with visual neglect at the facility. • 19. Definition Essay: What Is True Courage? What is true Courage? From my perspective, Courage isn't something that is inside of every single living human being; neither given to anybody. Following, courage requires individuals to do something out of their comfort zone. Courage is also determined by one's beliefs. Second, courage is exemplified by people going against the grain. Lastly, courage is mistaken and falsely measured by being replaced with responsibility. To begin with, courage is a choice. For instance, when Martin Luther King jr. chose to voice his opinions, he developed a trend that stuck. More and more people were following. He was responsible for many of the developments that are in place for all blacks today. The following was an example of true courage. • 21. The Human Tendency Towards War Exemplified in William... Thomas Hobbes once said, "Hereby it is a manifest, that during the time man live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war . . ." (Hobbes 64). Thomas Hobbes, an enlightenment thinker, believes that humans are born evil, and without a good leader, everything will turn into chaos. William Golding's Lord of the Flies rightly gives examples on Hobbes' viewpoint. Throughout the story, it shows the process in which the boys slowly loses their civilized self and turn into savages, how the boys would do anything just for survival or just purely entertainment. William Golding shows the innate evilness within humans by employing religious allegory as by using events, characters, and settings that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, the characters in the story parallels to other characters in the Bible. When Ralph starts condemning himself, Simon cheers him up by saying, "You'll get back to where you came from" (Golding 111). According to the Bible, only Satan causes condemnation. By interrupting Ralph and giving him hope, Golding illustrates Simon as Jesus because he saves Ralph from being torn apart by Satan. The quote also suggests Simon knows something Ralph does not know. It shows that Simon may have the ability to foresee future events. Later, when Simon talks to the beast, or Lord of the Flies, it says, "I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?" (Golding 143). The Lord of the Flies symbolizes Satan. In the New Testament, after baptism, Satan temps Jesus with various things for forty days. Simon is the only person that is able to speak to the beast on the island. His innate goodness helps him to be able to speak to the Lord of the Flies without being afraid, which is something only Jesus can do. Throughout the story, Simon displays various traits of Jesus such as being deeply spiritual, compassionated, and non–violent. The setting of the story are also related to stories in the Bible. • 23. Summary Of Sharon Drapers Copper Sun Polly In Sharon Drapers Copper Sun Polly is a young white girl working for the Derby family with Amari, a young African slave owned by the Derby family. Amari and Polly are similar in age, however, Polly has a huge advantage in life due to her race, while Amari has no choice but to serve as a slave to her white masters. Despite their differences, both Polly and Amari are strong individuals fighting for freedom. Polly can be described as having good morals although they are not always apparent. This is exemplified when she beings to realize how hard life for Amari, Teenie, Tidbit, and the other slaves are when she says, "how can people live like this?" (Draper 131). This shows that while Polly has been taught that she is superior to African people she still recognizes them as human beings. Another time Polly's good morals shine through is when she realizes she loves Amari, Tidbit, and Teenie. This is exemplified when Teenie suggests that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is exemplified when Polly, Amari, and Tidbit are on their way to Fort Mose, Amari remembers her mother, and Draper writes, " She must concentrate not on what was lost but what must be found." Another Time Amari is depicted as hopeful is when she is with Tidbit and Polly on their journey to Fort Mose when Clay finds them. Clay says he is going to severely punish them and Draper Writes, " Amari felt her heart quicken, but she refused to let Clay see that she was scared" (Draper 230). This shows that similar to Polly, Amari is willing to put up a fight against racial barriers because while Amari was a slave to Clay she still has the courage to stand up to him. • 25. Symbols In The Kite Runner Discussion Posts for Kite Runner Symbolism Kite: The kite is symbolic of Amir's childhood. They symbolize both the memorable and tragic memory held from his childhood. The memorable portion is through the friendship he gained with Hassan and the tragic portion is through the betrayal he gave Hassan during his time of rape. The flying kites initially symbolize the freedom Amir felt during his childhood. The blue kite specifically, represents the respect and honor he gained from his father. It symbolized the worth he always craved, when growing up as a child. This is because Amir had a very rough and complex relationship with his father as he grew up. Moreover, the kite representation also contributes to the freedom Afghanistan once owned. This is exemplified through the following quote from the text. "He had the blue kite in his hands; that was the first thing I saw. And I can't lie now and say my eyes didn't scan it for any rips. His chapan has mud smudges ... When Hassan hits his head against the tree, its alludes the idea of him showing the friendship between him and Amir only wounded him in the end. Several years later, when Amir goes to visit the tree, he notices it had slowly died. This symbolized what was left of the friendship between Amir and Hassan. This is exemplified through the following quote from the text. "Then Hassan did pick up the pomegranate. He walked toward me. He opened it and crushed it against his own forehead. • 27. Bioethics in Medicine, Exemplified by the Karen Ann... It is accepted that the advances in resuscitation techniques, initiated and influenced the evolution of bioethics by bringing to the fore the questions of: (i) just allocation of scarce medical resource, health care (ii) the nature of "being", and (iii) the proper purpose of medicine. The main issues that caused the emergence, or the study and introduction of bioethics was the introduction of modern technology in medicine in the form of respirators and artificial heart machines. The media attention to the Karen Ann Quinlan case made the issues public. The Karen Ann Quinlan case serves as a perfect example of these new issues. She was diagnosed with a persistent vegetative state, and her life was sustained with a respirator and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This implies a downgrading of the importance of the human body. The most important lesson learned from this case was the revising of medical treatment. Medicine should treat patients as autonomous subjects. Thus came about the development of autonomy based ethics principles. "Ethics needs principles – four can encompass the rest – and the respect for autonomy should be 'first among equals". (Gillon, 2003) The limitations regarding, "the right to life" was a topical issue at the time of the Karen Quinlan case. The court ruled that the decision should be in the hands of ethics committees, another important realisation from the Quinlan case ruling. Many ethics committees were formed to make the decisions. Hospitals and all extended care facilities got an ethics committee. It was thought that they should be the decision making body in the future. However, it is now the opinion of experts that the authority of the ethics committees is limited. Any decision must belong to patients, and/ or their proxy. Out of this case there has also developed advanced health directives, which led to a society becoming aware of the need to create living wills as to what family members were to do or not to do in conditions of "extraordinary" medical care. • 29. The Bank Robbery By Steven Schutzman Summary The Bank Of Affection Love; it's a strange and peculiar concept to the human mind. It has the power to affect one's persona drastically; it may make the meekest individual strong and the most ardent person frail. Many falsely accuse the power of endearment with a misnomer, often referred to as lust. The term lust is defined as an intense desire. Between the crosshairs of love and lust, lies an entity that is commonly seen in many folly love–struck youth. This strange facet of endearment is best exemplified in the flash fiction story The Bank Robbery, written by Steven Schutzman. Figuratively, this statement is an implicit comparison between the lights that had lined her streets and the teller's discovery of love. This statement also foreshadows the creation of a turbulent relationship between the two counterparts, since it depicts a "love at first sight" moment that conclusively suggests that the folly lovers will base their romance on short–term desires rather than true love. In the eleventh paragraph, the robber is seen stating "Ah money...you are just like love" (Schutzman 1) , evidently proving his lustful adoration towards materialistic facets. Schutzman implies, through this statement, that this is an example of a metaphor, since it is an explicit comparison between money and love. The author uses this metaphor, in order to epitomize the evident unstable romance that is created between the bank robber and the teller. This statement indirectly implies the fact that the relationship between the two counterparts is formed due to their lustful momentary desires. In order ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As well as 73% saying that their heroes include professional athletes, and 72% saying that their heroes include teachers. (National) What are some of the traits that might be influencing this generation to look up to a certain sect of people? Power, intelligence, drive, empathy, all of the above? What does it mean to be a hero in today's society, and would the ancient Greek heroes Hercules, Theseus, and Perseus still be considered heroes to modern day societal rules. Theseus and Perseus would still be considered heroes in modern day society. However, Hercules has bad qualities that overrule the ones that might be considered heroic. In ancient Greek times, Perseus was considered a great hero because he exemplified great empathy and great determination. Empathy was one of Perseus' most prominent traits. He exemplified this on multiple occasions, one of which being when he felt bad for the titan Atlas. The Titan was punished with having to hold up the heavens for all eternity by the gods for being the leader of the Titans in the war against Zeus. Perseus felt empathy for him and turned him to stone because earlier in the myth, Atlas begged to be turned to stone so that he could rest from the great burden. This shows empathy because of Perseus. While he did worship the Greek gods, he still felt that the punishment that was bestowed upon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Philosophical Principals Exemplified in The Truman Show... In order to understand the moral fabric of the world, it is important to question any information that is given to an individual, instead of blindly accepting the majority opinion and giving it full credibility and validity based on other people's opinions. Plato's work, The Republic introduces the allegory of the cave, which is metaphorical scenario that attempts to explain the importance of questioning norms that may seem trivial. Plato illustrates a cave where bounded prisoners have lived all their lives in seclusion, away from the outside world. In their immobile state, they can only look at the wall in front of them which is illuminated by a small fire that has been going on behind them. The wall constantly projects shadows of people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an interview, the antagonist claims that, "We accept the reality with which we are presented. It is as simple as that." The quote reflects many philosophical principles that are exemplified in both The Truman Show and in the Allegory of the Cave. To start off, the quote addresses the underlying ignorance that is evident in both Plato's and Weir's works. Truman was living his entire life inside a metaphorical bubble. In many instances throughout the movie, he ignored any suspicious act that threatened to obscure and interfere with his concept of reality. For example, as Truman was walking out of his house, he noticed a studio light that suddenly fell from the "sky" just as he was about to get in his car. Even though he questioned it at first, Truman did not really bother investigating or looking into it, perhaps because he was subconsciously afraid of what he would find. He chooses not to give the random incident any importance and gets in his car, which further proves his underlying ignorance and reluctance to accept things that may not conform to the norm. Shortly after, the producers of the show decide to make an excuse for the set malfunction, and it is soon forgotten. Additionally, when Sylvia tells him upfront that his entire life is a lie, he chooses to ignore it, until he himself starts to question his life. In the same way, in Plato's allegory of the ... The film offers interwoven storyline. It starts with a game of chess between a medieval knight, Antonius Block, and Death – in which if Block won, Death will prolong the knight's life. This game goes on in intermittent times. The knight is accompanied by his squire, Jöns, as they go back to the knight's castle to be reunited with his wife. The existence of a Supreme Being is being summoned in situations where people are in need of such assistance. Truly a remarkable film, 'The Seventh Seal' effectively portrays this question in sight of existentialism. God, neither the devil, was not present. There was even a scene where Block asked the woman accused of having contact with the devil to summon the devil so that Block will be able to ask about the about the existence of God. Block was not able to see anything. As it turns out, the woman was falsely accused by the priest. Block came to a point where he asked the existence of God – when he confesses to Death, disguised as a priest – but Death himself did not give answers to this. Even at the end of the film, Death did not explain this to Block. Quoting Block, "My life has been a futile pursuit, a wandering, a great deal of talk without meaning. I feel no bitterness or self–reproach because the lives of most people are very much like this." In what pursuit did he wasted his time into? Perhaps he was pertaining to his search for the existence of God. Aside from Block, a more existential character than him is introduced – his squire, Jöns. In Jöns' conversation with the painter in the church, he mentioned that, "This is squire Jöns. He grins at Death, mocks the Lord, laughs at himself and leers at the girls. However, as land where slavery arose during the birth of the nation, the question comes up on how slavery and freedom could coexist. Item Number Exemplified Learning Analysis The way I determined whether each item number exemplified learning, was by using my definition of what learning means and what I have been taught it means through this chapter. My definition of learning is the acquired knowledge or skills one has obtained by being taught, through experience, and/or by studying.
