Ubc Admission Essay Sample
Vancouver School of Economics at UBC. I first found my passion for economics was in high
school. I took The Introduction to Economics in grade 12 and I received the grade of 92%. Since
then I decided to develop a deep understanding of the economy, therefore, I was enrolled in The
Vancouver School of Economics (VSE). Studying in VSE required us to deliver a great number of
presentations, which has enhanced my confidence and communication skills. Also, this program has
promoted leadership skills and teamwork skills which have prepared me well for further study. In
my opinion, learning Economics in more than one countries would be helpful with my academic
knowledge and a good image for future occupations. It was this idea that motivated me in my current
application for the exchange program at University College London in The United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom is a country full of cultural diversity, where ancient buildings sit alongside
contemporary architecture. The UK is also famous for academics, it is one of the most popular
countries to go for earning a high–quality education. The UK institutions rank among the best in the

Application Essay: UC Davis Like Bakersfield
UC Davis like Bakersfield is a community that relies on its rich industrialized and subsistence
agriculture. Most of the population of Central valley consist of mainly Hispanic agricultural and
industrial workers. I have background and experience with working in the industrialized
agriculture since primary school, but most in secondary school. I worked with my mother in the
various fields like the citrus fields. I learned various techniques regarding pesticides and chemical
fertilizers to increase crop yield from several years of doing laborious tasks. I picked different kinds
of monocultures and saw how the workers had to overcame difficult working conditions like extreme
temperatures and be exposed to safety hazards. Working in this working system has altered my view
and encouraged me to want to protect and defend the workers. In continuance, it also influenced me
to want to study something pertaining the healthcare system, cellular work and gene expressions

Earning a degree in biochemistry and Molecular Biology will allow me to gain a better perspective
as to how the chemicals used in plants affect the the body and how different field crops become
susceptible to poor crop yields through gene variations. In addition, I was thinking about getting a

the food variations and GMOs. I want to protect the industrialized agriculture workers by creating
more safety laws, educating them about the environmental hazards and creating alternative methods

Radiologic Technologist Admission Essay
My mother always reminded me how education is the most important tool which I can use to
improve myself and my community. After obtaining my undergraduate degree in geography in
the late nineties, I later moved to the United States a year later to peruse a master degree in
computer sciences. After arriving in the US, I learned that life was not as easy as I thought. I
could not afford the tuition, paying my bills and taking care of my family. I later dropped out of
school to work some low paying jobs in order to save money to continue my education. After several
years of contemplating what to study, I enrolled in a community college to continue my education in
radiologic technology. As an undergraduate student I developed a huge passion for computers, I took

Uc Club Communication
In today's society, there are many ways in which people communicate within their individual
community. One community in which many people do not fully understand is the game of
baseball. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the U.S. and has been deemed America's
pastime. For me, sports are my life, especially when it comes to this particular game. I started playing
baseball around the age of 4 and continue to play here at the university for the UC Club Baseball
Team. When playing sports at a young age, there is not a whole lot of organization. Often times it
just looks like a bunch of kids running around aimlessly. At the age of 8, I decided to take my game
and tryout for my first travel team.
My first real baseball experience started in 2001 when I joined the Royalton Raptors, a local travel
baseball team in my city. Up...show more content...
Because I had only played on rec teams, I never realized exactly how in depth baseball actually was.
One aspect of the game that was new to me was the way people involved with the team
communicated. During my time with the Raptors, two clear forms of communication surfaced;
player to coach communication, and player–to–player communication. Understanding these two
forms of interaction is extremely important in understanding the baseball community.
The first form of communication is between coaches and players. Coaches are the foundation of
every team. They set–up, run, and manage every aspect of the organization. Coach's help players
learn different styles of play and help them learn and improve skills both in the field and at the plate.
Coaches use many different forms of communication, not

Last summer, the Supreme Court ruled against the use of race in the college admissions process in
the case of Fisher v. University of Texas. Since then, affirmative action has become a big issue in
the media; however, many people still do not even know what affirmative action is. Affirmative
action is a policy to prevent discrimination on the basis of "color, religion, sex, or national origin."
Overall, it favors minorities that are often discriminated. It might sound like an excellent policy;
however, the use of this policy in the college admissions process is prejudice. In the college
admissions process, affirmative action lowers the standards for some races, while raising the
standard for other races. For example, an Asian might need a...show more content...
According to the Washington Post, UC has admitted more Latino applicants than non–Hispanic
whites to its freshman class this year. The Washington Post also states that forty percent of its
students are the first in their generation to attend college and four out of ten students come from
poor families. The ban on affirmative action seems to be working seamlessly here; however, it is
not. This year, UC has admitted 22,000 Asian American, 17,000 Hispanic/Latino, 16,000
non–Hispanic whites, and 2,500 African Americans according to the Washington Post. The diversity
on campus is extremely low. There are only 2,500 African American and 22,000 Asian Americans.
Because affirmative action increases diversity on campus, many colleges and universities do not
want to abolish such a program. Therefore, they are looking for other ways to maintain diversity
without violating the constitution. An admission policy favoring first–generation college students
helps to increase diversity while still maintain the principles of the constitution. This kind of
admission policy would favor students who are the first in their family to attend college. The current
admissions policy discriminates against first–generation college students. Instead, it favors children
who have parents who graduated from the same college or university. According to Business Insider,
these legacy children had a 45.1% better chance of getting into elite

College Admissions Essay: Who Am I Really Be Me?
This is the question that every college wants to know. But with the endless amount of applicants,
distancing yourself from the crowd seems like an almost impossible feat. Throughout my years
of school, academics have always been what set me apart, but at a college like Harvard, stellar
grades and extracurriculars are expected. On paper, it might be difficult to distinguish me from
the other 40,000 applicants. Just based on probability, there is bound to be another Japanese boy
with divorced parents who lives in California. It's easy to blend into the crowd if I described
myself with these types of generalized titles and traits. What truly makes me unique is being me. As
an applicant, I bring to the campus my experiences, passions, beliefs and opinions. It would be
impossible to fully...show more content...
The game has given me lifelong friends that I've been with since our shots couldn't even hit the
rim. It has also offered me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on my community by
teaching young kids not only the skills needed to play, but also values like teamwork, discipline
and sportsmanship. I've never had a job but I can confidently say that being a housewife is no
small commitment. Cooking for my sister and cleaning the house, I was able to grow out of the
my childish selfishness as I learned to care for someone that was not myself. I could talk about
myself all day, but unfortunately I need to end this essay before it gets out of control. It might
seem like all of these details are just rambling, but I thought it would be pointless to describe
myself with only one aspect of my personality. I wanted to give you a more broad perspective of
who I am because I believe my individuality stems from the collection of all parts of myself. This
essay is a good start to getting to know me, but it is definitely not the end. I do not have enough
pages to fully describe myself, but I hope you'll let me finish this story in

The Benefits of The Internet
Thinking about the internet reminds me of something that was said in my history class. My
professor was lecturing about the early colonies in America and how the men of that time had to
sail up and down coasts in order to make maps. They had to actually draw these landscapes as
they saw them. This process would sometimes take years to accomplish. I realized that the
technology our ancestors used could today be accomplished in seconds versus years. I have access,
at the touch of a button, to maps from satellites miles above the earth. I can go shopping without
ever moving my legs and communicate with friends and family all over the world, which was once
nearly impossible. What an advantage I have over...show more content...
Roswell is a city that I really have trouble with in this area, every building looks the same and all
the roads sound the same. If it weren't for the directions that I received in Travelocity.com I would
have never made it to pick up my prom dress last year. With school and work filling most of my
schedule anything that saves me time is a lifesaver. Therefore I shop on the internet as much as
possible. For instance, when I was in high school, I hated having to drive to a book store to
acquire my summer reading books. I once spent a whole day searching for one book at several
different book stores all over town and the town next to mine; only to find out that almost every
kid in my grade, and at every school in the surrounding counties was buying and looking for the
same books. All of us were buying out and harassing the clerks for theses books at stores such as
Barnes and Nobles, local bookstores such as Jillian's Books, and Walden Books. What a waste of
time! There is so much merchandise , like my books, that can be purchased over the internet. E–Bay
is also a place where everyday people buy and sell personal items and equipment. My brother, Ben,
loves E–Bay because this is where he finds accessories to his 1972 master craft boat which he is
re–building. E–Bay has introduced him to a whole new world of shopping. With out it he would still
be searching for the limited items that he has

College Admissions Essay: A Career As A Student
We all go through hard things in our lives. Some of these changes alter the way we live negatively
while others bring around great positive change. I have gone through one of these changes and I
believe I have greatly progressed as a person from it. I came here from Iran, speaking very little
English and I believe myself to be relatively fluent now. I came to Trade Tech to learn more about
my passion, chemistry. In Iran, I graduated from a pre–university with the equivalent of an
Associates Degree in Chemistry. Here, at Trade Tech, I am double majoring in Chemistry and Math
and hope to earn an Associates Degree in Chemistry and transfering to a UC or Ivy League college.
The greatest hardships I had to overcome, and still overcoming, are the language barrier, cultural

I have always held chemistry and mathematics in the highest regards and greatly enjoyed learning
new things in each respective field. Entering pre–college and Trade Tech, I mostly knew what I
wanted to do and went after it. Though I am a student, I believe a student is also a teacher, and try
to teach others around me what I know or have learned. I regularly volunteer as a lab assistant for
my professor, Mr. David Jeffress, despite my already heavy work load of 13 units. I hope this
level of work will prepare me for my future job. I want to work at 3M for the majority of my
career end become a teacher of chemistry toward the end. Though my GPA of 3.80 is relatively
high, I want an outstanding GPA before I graduate. I have found great joy in learning about
electrolysis and other electric based chemistry reactions. I have also found titration, a mixture of
concentrations, to be equally enjoyable. I know that what I learn now will be of a great help to me
later on in my career. I think that the things I learn in school now will act as a foundation for the
chemistry that I will learn from my job. And perhaps I will find something that no one else

I am very interested in a career field in Human Resources. For this paper, I interviewed Lillian
Mannino who is a Human Resource and Personnel Manager at the UC San Diego Graduate School
of Global Policy and Strategy. As a manager, Lillian serves as the link between the graduate school's
management and its employees. She is in charge of overseeing recruitment, employee relations,
policy development, payroll, and benefits. Personnel management is a special branch of management
that is focus on the concerns of employees at work and their relationship with the organization. Her
educational experiences consist of a bachelor degree at UC San Diego in Management Science and
a professional Human Resources certificate from UCSD Extension. She has been working in the
academic administration for almost ten years and earned her current position as manager through
climbing up the ladder. She started off working in this field as a student affairs officer then was
promoted to an administrative specialist. Her prior work experience paved a path for her to build
up professional experience as well as a solid network within the UCSD administrative system.
In our interview, Lillian characterized her daily tasks as more typical performance rather than
maximum performance. She dedicates around 70% of her effort for eight hours a day on her tasks.
Her job does not require doing anything physical but rather more clerical and cognitive. She spends
around 45% of the average day on clerical tasks.

Asian Students and Colleges Essay
Many people assume that Asians have it the easiest of all the races when it comes to applying to top
tier schools. Not only are they "naturally intelligent", they are also a minority meaning they can reap
the benefits of affirmative action; therefore, they must be able to easily stand out against White
applicants with a comparably high academic record. Surprisingly, studies show that the opposite may
be true. Asians admission rates in top tier schools like Harvard suggest that White applicants may be
chosen over an Asian applicant with the same qualifications due to higher expectations for Asian
students. These unofficial discriminatory policies have the exact opposite effect of affirmative
action: giving advantaged Whites preference over...show more content...
Yet despite numerous roadblocks, the emphasis on hard work and education in most Asian cultures
has allowed them to excel above and beyond expectations.
On average, Asians score higher than any other race on the SAT (Washington, 2011). In highly
selective High Schools that require application based on merit there is often an Asian population that
is disproportionate to the Asian population in the surrounding county. In Thomas JeffersonHigh
School in Fairfax County, one of the top high schools in the nation for math and science, subjects
Asians generally excel in, Asians have surpassed Whites in enrollment. The student body of Thomas
Jefferson is fifty–four percent Asian, an astounding figure when compared to the mere nineteen
percent Asian population in Fairfax County (Shapiro, 2013). n.d.). Unfortunately, this success also
led to the stereotype that Asians are naturally intelligent as well as create a higher standard for
Asians, undermining the hard work and dedication many put into academics. There is evidence to
suggest that Asians are often held to a higher standard when applying to colleges, especially highly
selective colleges like the Ivy League. In a study by sociologists Thomas Espenshade and
Alexandria Radford of students who applied to selective universities, results showed that white
candidates were "three times more likely to be accepted than Asians with the same academic record"
(as cited by Chen, 2012). The discrimination is

Digital Media Admission Essay
Throughout my childhood, I've always wanted to tell a story from my perspective. I was born

either destiny that put me in that class, or a huge mistake. Nonetheless, I instantly fell in love with
digital media. My teacher, Jan Sherer, provided me with equipment and software to be able to learn
the basics of digital media. Although she was unpopular by most students in her class, I always
considered her a mentor. By senior year, I became proficient in most adobe products such as

The Is My Real Life Story Of Bias At Uc Davis
This is my real life story of bias at UC Davis...
Today I had an appointment with my upper division writing professor, Dr. Emily Foss. I met with
her to review my coursework, and to address some concerns. The first part of the 20 minute meeting
went fairly well. She had not taken the time to collect collect some early writing steps from us, not
were we required to upload these steps online. There was also ambiguity about the due date of our
last paper. All of those things were ironed out in fairly short order.
The discussion then turned to my most recent paper, a paper that required two, distinct perspectives
of a community based on in–group (first essay) and out–group (second essay) membership. I wrote
my first paper about my experiences growing as a Black, gay male, and the feeling of not belonging
of any community. The second was an academic perspective, taken from a sociological approach
about gay persons of color (intersectional identities).
On this particular paper, I received an 80% (under the University of California system that is a B
minus) and based on the quality of the paper, I couldn 't understand why. Getting feedback in this
course has not been the easiest. Dr. Foss made it clear early in the quarter that she will not read
our papers in advance. Instead, she will skim our papers, perhaps read a few sentences or a single
paragraph, and then offer general advice. As students, we are ultimately left with the information we
are given in class, which is often

Most of the population of Central valley consist of mainly Hispanic agricultural and industrial workers. I have background and experience with working in the industrialized agriculture since primary school, but most in secondary school. I worked with my mother in the various fields like the citrus fields. I learned various techniques regarding pesticides and chemical fertilizers to increase crop yield from several years of doing laborious tasks. I picked different kinds of monocultures and saw how the workers had to overcame difficult working conditions like extreme temperatures and be exposed to safety hazards. Working in this working system has altered my view and encouraged me to want to protect and defend the workers. • 3. Radiologic Technologist Admission Essay My mother always reminded me how education is the most important tool which I can use to improve myself and my community. After obtaining my undergraduate degree in geography in the late nineties, I later moved to the United States a year later to peruse a master degree in computer sciences. After arriving in the US, I learned that life was not as easy as I thought. I could not afford the tuition, paying my bills and taking care of my family. I later dropped out of school to work some low paying jobs in order to save money to continue my education. After several years of contemplating what to study, I enrolled in a community college to continue my education in radiologic technology. As an undergraduate student I developed a huge passion for computers, I took some...show more content... I was hired as a radiographer in a local hospital. Because of my love for information technology, I took a course and exam in medical imaging informatics and was certified as an imaging informatics professional (CIIP). With my experience and knowledge, I was promoted to the position of coordinator and in charge of imaging informatics (PACS administrator). • 4. Uc Club Communication In today's society, there are many ways in which people communicate within their individual community. One community in which many people do not fully understand is the game of baseball. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the U.S. and has been deemed America's pastime. For me, sports are my life, especially when it comes to this particular game. I started playing baseball around the age of 4 and continue to play here at the university for the UC Club Baseball Team. When playing sports at a young age, there is not a whole lot of organization. Often times it just looks like a bunch of kids running around aimlessly. At the age of 8, I decided to take my game and tryout for my first travel team. My first real baseball experience started in 2001 when I joined the Royalton Raptors, a local travel baseball team in my city. Up...show more content... Because I had only played on rec teams, I never realized exactly how in depth baseball actually was. One aspect of the game that was new to me was the way people involved with the team communicated. During my time with the Raptors, two clear forms of communication surfaced; player to coach communication, and player–to–player communication. Understanding these two forms of interaction is extremely important in understanding the baseball community. The first form of communication is between coaches and players. Coaches are the foundation of every team. They set–up, run, and manage every aspect of the organization. Coach's help players learn different styles of play and help them learn and improve skills both in the field and at the plate. Coaches use many different forms of communication, not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Last summer, the Supreme Court ruled against the use of race in the college admissions process in the case of Fisher v. University of Texas. Since then, affirmative action has become a big issue in the media; however, many people still do not even know what affirmative action is. Affirmative action is a policy to prevent discrimination on the basis of "color, religion, sex, or national origin." Overall, it favors minorities that are often discriminated. It might sound like an excellent policy; however, the use of this policy in the college admissions process is prejudice. In the college admissions process, affirmative action lowers the standards for some races, while raising the standard for other races. For example, an Asian might need a...show more content... According to the Washington Post, UC has admitted more Latino applicants than non–Hispanic whites to its freshman class this year. The Washington Post also states that forty percent of its students are the first in their generation to attend college and four out of ten students come from poor families. The ban on affirmative action seems to be working seamlessly here; however, it is not. This year, UC has admitted 22,000 Asian American, 17,000 Hispanic/Latino, 16,000 non–Hispanic whites, and 2,500 African Americans according to the Washington Post. The diversity on campus is extremely low. There are only 2,500 African American and 22,000 Asian Americans. Because affirmative action increases diversity on campus, many colleges and universities do not want to abolish such a program. Therefore, they are looking for other ways to maintain diversity without violating the constitution. An admission policy favoring first–generation college students helps to increase diversity while still maintain the principles of the constitution. This kind of admission policy would favor students who are the first in their family to attend college. The current admissions policy discriminates against first–generation college students. Instead, it favors children who have parents who graduated from the same college or university. According to Business Insider, these legacy children had a 45.1% better chance of getting into elite Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. College Admissions Essay: Who Am I Really Be Me? This is the question that every college wants to know. But with the endless amount of applicants, distancing yourself from the crowd seems like an almost impossible feat. Throughout my years of school, academics have always been what set me apart, but at a college like Harvard, stellar grades and extracurriculars are expected. On paper, it might be difficult to distinguish me from the other 40,000 applicants. Just based on probability, there is bound to be another Japanese boy with divorced parents who lives in California. It's easy to blend into the crowd if I described myself with these types of generalized titles and traits. What truly makes me unique is being me. As an applicant, I bring to the campus my experiences, passions, beliefs and opinions. It would be impossible to fully...show more content... The game has given me lifelong friends that I've been with since our shots couldn't even hit the rim. It has also offered me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on my community by teaching young kids not only the skills needed to play, but also values like teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship. I've never had a job but I can confidently say that being a housewife is no small commitment. Cooking for my sister and cleaning the house, I was able to grow out of the my childish selfishness as I learned to care for someone that was not myself. I could talk about myself all day, but unfortunately I need to end this essay before it gets out of control. It might seem like all of these details are just rambling, but I thought it would be pointless to describe myself with only one aspect of my personality. I wanted to give you a more broad perspective of who I am because I believe my individuality stems from the collection of all parts of myself. This essay is a good start to getting to know me, but it is definitely not the end. I do not have enough pages to fully describe myself, but I hope you'll let me finish this story in Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Working for a company called Gentility I've found myself so in love with what I do. Helping another individual learn and make every day decisions no matter the circumstances really made me realize the value of opportunity and seizing that moment while in it. After graduating I had a lot of time on my hands, and job searching has not been the easiest task. • 8. The Benefits of The Internet Thinking about the internet reminds me of something that was said in my history class. My professor was lecturing about the early colonies in America and how the men of that time had to sail up and down coasts in order to make maps. They had to actually draw these landscapes as they saw them. This process would sometimes take years to accomplish. I realized that the technology our ancestors used could today be accomplished in seconds versus years. I have access, at the touch of a button, to maps from satellites miles above the earth. I can go shopping without ever moving my legs and communicate with friends and family all over the world, which was once nearly impossible. What an advantage I have over...show more content... Roswell is a city that I really have trouble with in this area, every building looks the same and all the roads sound the same. If it weren't for the directions that I received in Travelocity.com I would have never made it to pick up my prom dress last year. With school and work filling most of my schedule anything that saves me time is a lifesaver. Therefore I shop on the internet as much as possible. For instance, when I was in high school, I hated having to drive to a book store to acquire my summer reading books. I once spent a whole day searching for one book at several different book stores all over town and the town next to mine; only to find out that almost every kid in my grade, and at every school in the surrounding counties was buying and looking for the same books. All of us were buying out and harassing the clerks for theses books at stores such as Barnes and Nobles, local bookstores such as Jillian's Books, and Walden Books. What a waste of time! There is so much merchandise , like my books, that can be purchased over the internet. E–Bay is also a place where everyday people buy and sell personal items and equipment. My brother, Ben, loves E–Bay because this is where he finds accessories to his 1972 master craft boat which he is re–building. E–Bay has introduced him to a whole new world of shopping. • 9. College Admissions Essay: A Career As A Student We all go through hard things in our lives. Some of these changes alter the way we live negatively while others bring around great positive change. I have gone through one of these changes and I believe I have greatly progressed as a person from it. I came here from Iran, speaking very little English and I believe myself to be relatively fluent now. I came to Trade Tech to learn more about my passion, chemistry. In Iran, I graduated from a pre–university with the equivalent of an Associates Degree in Chemistry. Here, at Trade Tech, I am double majoring in Chemistry and Math and hope to earn an Associates Degree in Chemistry and transfering to a UC or Ivy League college. The greatest hardships I had to overcome, and still overcoming, are the language barrier, cultural differences,...show more content... I have always held chemistry and mathematics in the highest regards and greatly enjoyed learning new things in each respective field. Entering pre–college and Trade Tech, I mostly knew what I wanted to do and went after it. Though I am a student, I believe a student is also a teacher, and try to teach others around me what I know or have learned. I regularly volunteer as a lab assistant for my professor, Mr. David Jeffress, despite my already heavy work load of 13 units. I hope this level of work will prepare me for my future job. I want to work at 3M for the majority of my career end become a teacher of chemistry toward the end. Though my GPA of 3.80 is relatively high, I want an outstanding GPA before I graduate. I have found great joy in learning about electrolysis and other electric based chemistry reactions. I have also found titration, a mixture of concentrations, to be equally enjoyable. I know that what I learn now will be of a great help to me later on in my career. I think that the things I learn in school now will act as a foundation for the chemistry that I will learn from my job. And perhaps I will find something that no one else Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. I am very interested in a career field in Human Resources. For this paper, I interviewed Lillian Mannino who is a Human Resource and Personnel Manager at the UC San Diego Graduate School of Global Policy and Strategy. As a manager, Lillian serves as the link between the graduate school's management and its employees. She is in charge of overseeing recruitment, employee relations, policy development, payroll, and benefits. Personnel management is a special branch of management that is focus on the concerns of employees at work and their relationship with the organization. Her educational experiences consist of a bachelor degree at UC San Diego in Management Science and a professional Human Resources certificate from UCSD Extension. She has been working in the academic administration for almost ten years and earned her current position as manager through climbing up the ladder. She started off working in this field as a student affairs officer then was promoted to an administrative specialist. Her prior work experience paved a path for her to build up professional experience as well as a solid network within the UCSD administrative system. In our interview, Lillian characterized her daily tasks as more typical performance rather than maximum performance. She dedicates around 70% of her effort for eight hours a day on her tasks. Her job does not require doing anything physical but rather more clerical and cognitive. She spends around 45% of the average day on clerical tasks. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Asian Students and Colleges Essay Many people assume that Asians have it the easiest of all the races when it comes to applying to top tier schools. Not only are they "naturally intelligent", they are also a minority meaning they can reap the benefits of affirmative action; therefore, they must be able to easily stand out against White applicants with a comparably high academic record. Surprisingly, studies show that the opposite may be true. Asians admission rates in top tier schools like Harvard suggest that White applicants may be chosen over an Asian applicant with the same qualifications due to higher expectations for Asian students. These unofficial discriminatory policies have the exact opposite effect of affirmative action: giving advantaged Whites preference over...show more content... Yet despite numerous roadblocks, the emphasis on hard work and education in most Asian cultures has allowed them to excel above and beyond expectations. On average, Asians score higher than any other race on the SAT (Washington, 2011). In highly selective High Schools that require application based on merit there is often an Asian population that is disproportionate to the Asian population in the surrounding county. In Thomas JeffersonHigh School in Fairfax County, one of the top high schools in the nation for math and science, subjects Asians generally excel in, Asians have surpassed Whites in enrollment. The student body of Thomas Jefferson is fifty–four percent Asian, an astounding figure when compared to the mere nineteen percent Asian population in Fairfax County (Shapiro, 2013). n.d.). Unfortunately, this success also led to the stereotype that Asians are naturally intelligent as well as create a higher standard for Asians, undermining the hard work and dedication many put into academics. There is evidence to suggest that Asians are often held to a higher standard when applying to colleges, especially highly selective colleges like the Ivy League. In a study by sociologists Thomas Espenshade and Alexandria Radford of students who applied to selective universities, results showed that white candidates were "three times more likely to be accepted than Asians with the same academic record" (as cited by Chen, 2012). • 12. Digital Media Admission Essay Throughout my childhood, I've always wanted to tell a story from my perspective. I was born with introverted tendencies, and I still have a hard time articulating to people my thoughts. But creating short films has always been an effective medium to express my true self to the audience around me. Most importantly, creating short stories helps me to understand who I am. I would like to be considered for the IFDM program because I believe I was born to tell a story, and I would like the experience of others to help shape my influence. My first experience with digital media started at Volcano VistaHigh School. Registering as an incoming freshman, I wanted to become a photographer. I distinctly remember registering for photography class, but I was stuck with digital media as an alternative. I like to joke that it was either destiny that put me in that class, or a huge mistake. Nonetheless, I instantly fell in love with digital media. My teacher, Jan Sherer, provided me with equipment and software to be able to learn the basics of digital media. Although she was unpopular by most students in her class, I always considered her a mentor. By senior year, I became proficient in most adobe products such as Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Audition. I also learned different camera techniques thanks to her teachings. I decided to write this appeal instead, regardless of the odds. I would rather take another rejection than a lifetime of regrets for not giving my dream another shot when I could have. Last FALL 2015, my TAG for UC Davis was approved. Everything was going well until my car was stolen about a month before the final examinations. I had to pay all the expenses in order to get it fixed because my insurance did not cover theft. Coming from a low–income family, financial stress has taken a toll on me. All my time was spent resolving that problem that I was barely focused on my academics. I had a 'B' in CISP 360. But after that mishap, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 16. The Is My Real Life Story Of Bias At Uc Davis This is my real life story of bias at UC Davis... Today I had an appointment with my upper division writing professor, Dr. Emily Foss. I met with her to review my coursework, and to address some concerns. The first part of the 20 minute meeting went fairly well. She had not taken the time to collect collect some early writing steps from us, not were we required to upload these steps online. There was also ambiguity about the due date of our last paper. All of those things were ironed out in fairly short order. The discussion then turned to my most recent paper, a paper that required two, distinct perspectives of a community based on in–group (first essay) and out–group (second essay) membership. I wrote my first paper about my experiences growing as a Black, gay male, and the feeling of not belonging of any community. The second was an academic perspective, taken from a sociological approach about gay persons of color (intersectional identities). On this particular paper, I received an 80% (under the University of California system that is a B minus) and based on the quality of the paper, I couldn 't understand why. Getting feedback in this course has not been the easiest. Dr. Foss made it clear early in the quarter that she will not read our papers in advance. Instead, she will skim our papers, perhaps read a few sentences or a single paragraph, and then offer general advice. As students, we are ultimately left with the information we are given in class, which is often Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. My Legacy At UC Irvine There is no knowing what my legacy at UC Irvine may be, but I will describe what my goal is for the next four years. Of course it includes doing well in all my classes, however I would like to accomplish more than that and at a deeper level. I would like to work with other students to make our community become more united than it already is. Fitting in is one thing, but making others feel welcomed is much more important. College is a place where connections and ties are established and everyone should be able to do so. It would be of great pleasure to join groups where as a collective we help not only each other, but also the community around us. The legacy I want to create is not for me but rather for the notion of an interconnected and involved Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 20. Benefits Of UC Berkeley "You are at the #1 public university in the world," are the words implanted into the University of California, Berkeley. UC Berkeley is defined as #1 for its programs, history, faculty, environment, and prospective influences but ultimately, what defines UC Berkeley are its students. Through the impact its students make and the legacies they leave, a high level of prestige has been established when discussing the university. Another aspect of the university that engenders prestige is the admission process, which is set in place to assess who would best "fit" the university. Ailed and Damon are on different spectrums of life that result in completely different lifestyles and determinants of importance. Ailed comes from a low socioeconomic background where her parents work endlessly to provide for their children, leaving Ailed responsible for her younger brothers where "her hands are never at rest." Along with school, Ailed works 18 hours a week to help her parents financially and send money to her grandfather in the Philippines. Though Ailed seeks higher education, she recognizes that her family does not have the means to provide for her financially due to their position in America as part of the working class. Inversely, Damon comes from a family where both of his parents attended UC Berkeley and now spend $30,000 per year altogether for him and his sister to go to a private school. Damon describes his life as unlavish compared to his peers, but ultimately he has the ability and access to afford college with no family responsibilities due to a more advantaged life in the affluent professional class. Though this is not always true, the positions of both Damon and Ailed's family socioeconomically affect their schooling environment because they are submerged into schools that produce students alike to their socioeconomic status. Since Ailed's family is of the working class, she goes to a school that parallels her social class, with a large people of color population and a great focus on moving onto work. Balboa High School has a limited amount of AP classes, little to no college preparation help, and underfunding in terms of the physical infrastructure of the institution as well as the programs and teachers, considering some teachers are being laid off from their jobs.
