For an ending to be successful, it must leave the audience wanting to know what happens to the
individual. Psychological thrillers create suspense throughout the film and it makes the audience
speculate. Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese he used flashbacks, cinematography and
costume to help leave the audience with questions. Yes I agree with this statement. Flashbacks are
used to show individuals past and why they act that way. In the opening scene we see Teddy is
talking to his partner Chuck about his wife Dolores. He told Chuck that his wife died in a fire that
broke out in their apartment. In the flashback Dolores told Teddy "You must let me go". This line is
important because she doesn't want him to hold onto the past. The colours in the flashback are
bright and colourful. This shows that they were...show more content...
Teddy's uniform changes from the tie, hat, suit, badge and coat to the clothing of the patients on
the island. This is because he was closer to getting to the answer of the missing patient. When he
went to the lighthouse, he found out his answer. Mr Crawley told Teddy "Your name is Andrew
Laedis and you're the 67th patient. This line is important because he finally know who the 67th
patient is. The director then used a close up to show Teddy's reaction. Teddy's costume changed
throughout the film and it shows the progress of Teddy finding out the truth. This makes the
audience speculate and we don't know why his costume changes throughout the film. Dolores is
shown in a yellow dress in the flashbacks near the end of the film. This is because this is the last
memory Teddy has of her. In the end of the film Andrew tells Dr Sheane "Is it better to live as a
monster or die as a good man". The meaning behind this quote is that Andrew is uncertain of his
future. In the end, we don't know if Andrew gets lobotomized in the film or not. This leaves the
audience speculating what decision Andrew made in the

Cinematography In Citizen Kane
When watching Citizen Kane, the audience nearly doesn't need dialogue to enhance or intertitles to
explain the events that unfold. The excellent cinematography alone tells the story to the viewer. The
audience's awareness of the plot is due to the techniques behind the screen, the lens used, the
composition, every technical and artistic decision made (Cowan 90). Modern films might be driven
by words and accented by fancy color technology, but in this film, we the audience are able to derive
emotions and the inner psychology of characters through lighting, spatial narration, and the
ever–famous technique of deep focus.
As with any non–color film, the right lighting is absolutely crucial. We might wonder if it would
have been half as effective in color as it was in black–and–white, as the stark differences of the
chiaroscuro lighting add a tremendous amount to the characterization of Charles Foster Kane. For
example, while Kane is youthful and relatively wholesome (compared to an...show more content...
This film is considered a "pioneer" of this technique (Hinrichs 60), although not the first time it'd
been utilized. For example, it had been used on the titular character of the film Nosferatu to give
him a sense of foreboding (Cook 101). Gregg Toland, the director of photography onCitizen Kane,
had also used the technique before on his other films, such as his first film, Palmy Days (Cowan
87). It might be said that all these tremendous feats of cinematography, and therefore the success and
critical praise of the film, are due more to Toland than Welles (Cowan 84). Either way, this film
would undoubtedly not be as monumental without this extraordinary technique. It allowed for
scenes to be more dramatic and for the enriching of them through the lightning mix (Cook 330).
Interactions are layered, the plot grows more comprehensive, and yet it's all done through an
unmoving camera – truly

Nosferatu Cinematography
The cinematography of the film Nosferatu is the achievement from the entire film. This film is
from the early 1920's and is considered a silent movie. This movie is also considered to be a
German expressionist film, and was directed by F.W. Murnau. The cinematography was done by
Fritz Arno Wagner and Gunther Krampf.Nosferatu influenced the Dracula productions later down
the road, and introduced the idea that vampires can be destroyed by the sun. The ways that
cinematography made the film is because it was influenced by the German Expressionist Movement.
Which would make the film very symbolic and stylized since its considered a gothic horror film.
Because of the German Expressionist Movement, the cinematography was considered of one of the

The low key wasn't used for a few scenes like the German countryside right before you enter
Orlok's castle, which gave a contrast the castle. Another way that cinematography made the film
would be the high contrast that can be seen throughout the film. The main object where the high
contrast is shown throughout the film would be Count Orlok himself. It's mainly focused there
because so that we can exactly see how he looks, which would be a pale face and long claw
hands. There wasn't much camera movement in the whole film, which also gave that eerie feeling
and made the shots very simple considering that they were long shots. Even though the film is
considered to be low key, there was a few long shots and a few close–up shots to give the setting.
There was at times where you can notice some point of view shots like when some of the characters
were looking out the windows. There was also a low–angle shot that was noticed, which would be
when Orlok is walking on the mast of the ship. There was a great close–up towards his coffin, when

The Might of Spite Plot Summary The movie is about a guy (Antagonist) and a girl (Protagonist)
living together that get turns to do the laundry. The guy (Thando) is very lazy, watches TV the
whole day and refuses to do the laundry even after the girl (Carrie), tries to force him physically.
Carrie is miserable after that but then finds another way to get him of the couch. She tells him that
his car is being stolen and when he gets outside, Carrie locks the door behind him. Thando sees his
car isn't being stolen. He then sees the washing basket outside and sees Carrie through the window

The TV room will be a bit darker though with pale look and feel to it because it is the antagonist's

is out of his territory and that is where he will be defeated. The kitchen will have a more stable
feel to it with some solid colours and shadows. Lighting Lighting shapes the realty in front of the
lens, giving it depth or flatness, excitement or boredom, reality or artificiality. Light can fall on the
scene in a variety of ways to create many different moods to help tell the story.* (Kodak: the art of

setting that is gloomier than the high contrast the kitchen and the garden will have. This is
because it is where the antagonist spends most of his time and there will be mixed light used that
strategically falls on certain places. The sun coming through a window and or a lamp on a table
will also be used as extras to get enough light on the subjects so that low key light won't be made.
With the face of the antagonist in a darker part of the room the flicker of the TV will slightly be

City Of God Cinematography Essay
The used of cinematography and camera movement is hands down one of the most, if not the
most important thing of a good film. I believe that they are two of the things that make for a great
film. So when asked to compare a scene from Raising Arizona and City of God, I had to choose two
of my most iconic scenes in film history, the chicken chase from City of God and the diaper heist
from Raising Arizona. In two of the most iconic scenes in movie history, it is only natural that a
slew of camera techniques are used to tell the story of each particular scene, most of which are
some of the same methods. One of the most noticeable parallels between the films is the camera
lens and the use of shallow focus. Shallow focus is the main source of camera...show more content...
While the use of shallow focus is something that is conspicuous throughout both of the scenes,
Raising Arizona also feature a zoom shot when the camera focus switches subjects to the diaper
package that has been dropped. A portion of framing is also a difference within each scene,
though the framing is mostly level, Raising Arizona also uses a canted framing when shooting
the running within the street. A high angle of framing is used in City of God, during the shooting
scene. This is used to display more people on the screen and heighten the sense of panic. Crane
shot and whip pan are also used in the scene of City of God, given the amount of individuals in
that scene; whip pan is used quite a bit to get everyone in the shot. A crane is used at the
beginning for parts such as walking down stairs. In City of God, a difference in speed rate is also a
noticeable variance among the scenes. While all of these are slight differences, the most obvious
deviations in technique are the camera movement. For Raising Arizona, the use of tracking shot and
tilt are used specifically for the running scenes. While, in City of God, almost the entire scene is shot
using a Steadicam, noted by the tremulousness of the camera during all of the moving

Paul Conroy Cinematography
In film, cinematography, or the making of a motion picture film, is a major key to creating the right
movie. It has a major influence on the audience's experience while watching the film, from making
the audience feel certain emotions to changing the whole genre of a film. Cinematography has many
different effects on the feel of a movie, in which it can make or break it. During Buried, a film
directed by Rodrigo Cortes, the audience witnesses many scenes in which the main character has lost
hope or given up on trying to get out of the horrible situation he is in. Buried uses different types of
cinematography like close–ups, overhead shots, and longshots to evoke a sense of lost hope.
In one scene the audience sees that Paul Conroy, our main character, begins to make progress when
he goes through a phone that was left in the box with him. He calls one of the numbers thinking that
it could connect him to people that may help him. During Paul's conversation with his captures the
audience sees a close–up of his face, helping to show the anxiety and panic that paul is feeling. He
soon realizes...show more content...
Buried uses close–ups to show the audience Paul's frustrations and anxiety, which both help to
deteriorate his sense of hope throughout the film. This film also utilizes overhead shots to give off
the feel of nothingness. This helps the audience to understand that Paul feels as if he is buried so
deep and far from the outside world that no one will ever find him. In a film with one man based in
one setting, the many different uses of the camera keeps the audience involved and thinking about
what the main character was going through and how he must have been feeling. The way in which
cinematography was used in buried helped to make the audience feel as if they were in the film and
are experiencing everything that the actor

Importance Of Mise En Scene And Cinematography
introduction: in this essay, I will demonstrate the significance of understanding cinematography and
mise–en–scene as a filmmaker and a spectator. without the ability of reading or understanding
mise–en–scene and cinematography it would be extremely difficult for the spectators/audience to
understand the visual storytelling the filmmaker is trying to attempt furthermore it would be even
more difficult for the filmmaker to create a visual storytelling without at least knowing the power of
mise en scene and cinematography. in mise–en–scene, we could start by looking at semiotics, thus,
we could examine anything we do around us and in movies. one could not fully understand a movie
and filmmaker insight without understanding and examine mise–en–scene and cinematography. In
other words, mise–en–scene and cinematography is an effective and critically essential not only to
the filmmaker but also to the spectators'."We know very well we must learn to read before we can
attempt to enjoy"( 157–James Monaco–1977)

The Impact of Cinematography on Our Life Essay
In today's society, film is seen as a major form of entertainment that can also be used to convey
certain messages and themes. An aspect of film that is often missed or taken for granted is the
impact of cinematography. Cinematography is the art of motion picture photography. Over the
years, cinematography has proven itself to be a major contribution to film, furthering its artistic value
and evolving as time changes. In the beginning, when film was still an emerging form of technology,
expression of artistic ideas was not a main concern for filmmakers. In the 1890's, Auguste Marie
Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean LumiГЁre, famously known as the LumiГЁre Brothers, invented the
Cinematograph. This invention was the first film camera. It also...show more content...
Although film at this time was still emerging, glimmers of art seemed to flow from the works from
various pioneers. As cinematography was now emerging, new elements such as contrast, exposure
and camera techniques also came about. Contrast is very important lighting technique used by
cinematographers. Contrast is defined by the ratio of light and dark in an image. In terms of
cinematography, contrast plays an important role in that it determines the mood of the scene.
High contrast for example would make the scene darker. While higher contrast expresses a darker
mood like evil, low contrast can indicate good or innocence. In the 1962 film version of To Kill A
Mockingbird, Cinematographer, Russell Harlan uses contrast in an interaction with Scout and Bob
Ewell. While Scout is sleeping in a car, Bob approaches her and stares at her. The shot shows Bob's
face to be much darker than Scout's; an example of high contrast. This difference can be interpreted
as a sign of Bob's evil nature and Scout's relaxed, innocent personality. Another aspect of
cinematography is exposure. Exposure is defined as how much light passes through the camera lens.
Exposure is often used by cinematographers to direct the audience's attention to one part of the
screen, or to imply the mood of the scene (Cinematography). Overexposure lets more light through
the lens whereas underexposure lets less light through the lens. An example of exposure used

Overview of Digital Cinematography
Digital Cinematography Introduction The technological advances in filmmaking and photography
have helped artists and cinematographers create beautifully colorful stories without the burden of
editing reels upon reels of celluloid. But with digital cinematography there are other issues that
require attention and innovation, and this paper delves into one of those issues the ever–growing
need for archiving digital movies and HD television production safely and effectively. This paper
also proposes potential solutions for those issues. The Literature on Archiving The Digital Dilemma
In the peer–reviewed journal Engineering & Technology journalist P. Dempsey explains that while
more and more movies are entirely digitally produced including James Cameron's smash hit film
"Avatar" the shift from celluloid to digital presents "major challenges for the communications
business" (Dempsey, 2010, p. 1). Enormous amounts of data must be ""В¦moved around to create
and manage high definition (HD) broadcasts for TV" and enormous quantities of data must be
safely stored for movies as well. As cinematographers struggle to bring digital images in line with
the "ever–higher resolution" achieved with celluloid images, which means that digital
cinematography would achieve "a capture rate of 60 frames per second and a resolution of 7680 x
4320 pixel" (Dempsey, p. 2). When that resolution is achieved, it will mean "point–to–point data
rates" that approach 24Gbit/s, and that in turn will

Today, the movie industry has become a huge moneymaker in the entertainment business. You
cannot turn on the television without seeing advertisements for the next big blockbuster film.
While most of the films these days entertain with amazing special effects or raunchy comedy,
there are still films that thrive because of great acting, directing, and editing. Three films that I
believe would be great examples of the way these aspects can cause a film to excel are ?Any

editing, a movie can portray an intense situation realistically. In ?The Cell?, color is used to

?The Cell?, instead of focusing on accurately portraying reality, takes you to the dream world.
Catherine Deane, played by Jennifer Lopez, is a child psychologist involved in an experimental
project that allows her to travel inside the mind of coma victims to try to draw them away from
their fears and thus out of their coma. This movie portrays the journey inside the mind much like
you would depict a dream. When Deane is inside a young child, whose main concern seems to be
a fear of the ?boogie man?, the world she enters is a beautiful desert scene where the sky is bright
blue with puffy white clouds. She is always dressed in bright white dresses and seems to glow.
This depicts that she has earned the child?s trust. All color is brighter in this dreamlike world.
Even though these experiments had not been successful bringing the child out of the coma, Dean
was able to learn a lot about the child. This caused a couple of detectives to approach her about
entering the mind of a serial killer who had slipped into a coma with the goal of discovering the
location of his most recent captive.

From a different angle of view, close–up shots of the lovers (in the deck) provide richness and
romantic touch to the scenes. On the other side, long–shots provide importance to the sinking of the
ship. E. Sound In the initial stages of the production of the film Titanic, Cameron was not ready to
use any song. When he listened to the song "My Heart Will Go On" sung by Celine Dion, he
changed his mind and decided to use the same in his film. One can see that this song is one of the
elements behind the commercial success of the film as an international hit. The film's musical
element is contributed by James Roy Horner. One can see that Horner's music is deeply influenced
by Celtic music. Besides, Horner was deeply interested to inculcate electronic elements to film
music. From a different angle of view, the sound effect in the film leads the viewers from peace to
chaos and vice versa. In addition, the sound effects contributed much to the commercial success and
international fame of the film. One can see that sound designing is an integral part of the sound
effects in a film. Within the context of sound designing of the film Titanic, Chris Boyes's
contribution is noteworthy because he was keenly interested to inculcate natural sound to the sound
track. Some of the important scenes in the film (Titanic hitting the iceberg and sinking into the
Ocean) prove Boyle as a successful sound

In the film 'The Help' directed by Tate Taylor, there are numerous scenes that help develop the
major plot of the film. I found that one scene in the film is significant. This scene is the one where
we see Skeeter walking into her mother's room to ask her about Constantine as she needs the story
for her book. Her mother tries to cover up what had happened and it doesn't go down well with
Skeeter. Tate uses many things like dialogue, characterisation, cinematography and theme, to develop
the scene, that relates back to other references in the film.
In this scene the purpose is to show us what has really happened to Constantine. This is expressed to
us through dialogue and other techniques. But the dialogue used helps us feel the emotions...show

" Miss Charlotte, let me take her to the kitchen. Come on, baby. Let's go". Higgenbottom is
appalled at this point. She briefly says "Charlotte". As Charlotte does not want to upset Grace she
speaks something abruptly that triggers a climax of the scene. "Both of you. Leave. Now." We can
see that from this dialogue here that there is a mist of tension in the room between Charlotte and
Grace as Charlotte is trying to respect and impress Grace, However Rachel barging into their dinner,
could see Charlotte's reputation turning bad so Charlotte does what she thinks is best and tells the
two to leave. We can see from the dialogue that Charlotte was hesitant to say these things as she
really did care for Constantine but her reputation was at stake. This brings forward the theme

This essay is about the movie Inglourious Basterds (2009) written and directed by Quentin Tarantino.
The significant elements of mise–en–scene in the film will be discussed, along with the film's
elements of cinematography in the opening scene. Film often uses editing techniques in its
storytelling that infer meaning, subtle though they may be. These techniques will be identified and
discussed, and the meanings explained. Set in Nazi–occupied France during World War II, the film
follows a group of Jewish US soldiers as they plan to assassinate the leaders of the Third Reich in a
movie theater. Led by Allied officer Lieutenant Aldo Raine, played by Brad Pitt, the "Basterds'" plan
coincides with the theater owner's vengeful plans for the same thing.
The opening shot of a film is one of the most crucial parts of a movie. In the same way that an
establishing shot introduces us into the scene, the opening shot introduces us into a movie. Although
not the most memorable, the opening shot is important because the director can use it to convey the
film's main ideas, premises or character arcs. Inglourious Basterds (2009) opens with a long shot of

Cinematography In Into The Wild
Into the wild Blog
"Into the Wild" is a film directed in 2007 by the controversial film writer and actor – Sean Penn. It is
based upon Jon Krakauer's non–fiction book "Into the wild". The film follows the idealist
Christopher McCandless on his journey to find peace and happiness. Some people might argue that
McCandless was a reckless narcissist who brought great sorrow to his family and troubled the law
enforcers. I am no professional analysist, but I think that McCandless was perceived as a noble but
misguided idealist. Film techniques such as cinematography, mise–en–scene, and lighting used
throughout the film support my judgement of McCandless.
Cinematography plays a huge part in portraying McCandless's journey. In the film, a variety of

To put it simply, McCandless wanted peace, ultimate freedom, happiness, and most importantly, a
sense of adventure. He thought his materialistic parents and the corrupt society were preventing him
from satisfying those desires, thus, he departed into the wild. This of course, was not a practical
decision. Cinematography is used to show these emotions in scenes throughout the film. At the
beginning scenes of the film, McCandless is shown riding on a train with close–up shots of the side
of the trains which show McCandless's made–up name – Alexander Supertramp – written in chalk.
The next few scenes show medium shots of moving trucks. The train scene featuring close–up shots
of McCandless's name implying that he is free to be himself – freedom. The moving train create a
sense of adventure and the use of trucks create a feeling of progress and change. Close–up shots of
McCandless are used at the time of his death. These shots show a distressed McCandless who
realises his ideals would lead to his death. Close–ups are also used to show his diary entries

The Importance of Cinematography
Without studying the details of film, one may ask what is cinematography. Cinematography is the
art of making motion pictures. There are many features that go on in making a film. A
cinematographer has a big role in making the film come together with certain camera movements and
lighting elements. Cinematography is one of the most important aspects of film. People should be
more interested in cinematography because there are so many intricate details that go into making a
film special and that is because of and camera angles and movements, color, and different types of
shots.

Some of these shots include, extreme close up (ECU), medium shot (MS), establishing shot (ES),
and long shot (LS). Extreme close up is what a person may assume it is. It is used in filmmaking
to focus on a particular detail of a subject. In many cases, ECUs are very intimate and are best
used cautiously. Medium shot, also known as waist shot, is also what it sounds like. It is a shot
from a medium distance and includes the body from the knees or waist up. An establishing shot
may be one that people aren't as familiar with. An establishing shot is a usually long shot in film or
video used at the beginning of a sequence to establish an overview of the scene that follows
(Merriam–Webster). One other shot a cinematographer should consider using is a long shot. A LS
is a shot from a great distance, which makes people seem to appear more like shapes then people.

maids compared to Skeeter's life style, as you can tell by the clothes they're wearing the maids are
considered to be low class as the people of society.
This scene was one of the main 'turning points in the film, it helps the viewer get answers as to who
Constantine is as a character and why she is so important to impact Skeeter's life so much. It showed
this with a variety of techniques such as the use of dialogue, sound effects, cinematography and
costume with characters. This expanded the story by gaining more ideas on the character's

Cinematography In The Birds
The film The Birds demonstrated a lot of editing and cinematography aspect throughout the film. In
the particular scene instructed, analyzing this part took a while to understand why the director use
of cinematography as well as editing, were in these particular scenes. The beginning of the scene
where Cathy and Melanie return to the living room and sit down, gave a demonstration of the use
of the wide angle. As I analyzed the shot from the beginning of the scene, I understood the purpose
of why this particular angle was used. The director used this to help the audience know exactly
where the main characters are which seems to be a living room, but also helps us understand the
intensity and fear these vicious birds has put upon the characters

Cinematography Essay

  • 1. For an ending to be successful, it must leave the audience wanting to know what happens to the individual. Psychological thrillers create suspense throughout the film and it makes the audience speculate. Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese he used flashbacks, cinematography and costume to help leave the audience with questions. Yes I agree with this statement. Flashbacks are used to show individuals past and why they act that way. In the opening scene we see Teddy is talking to his partner Chuck about his wife Dolores. He told Chuck that his wife died in a fire that broke out in their apartment. In the flashback Dolores told Teddy "You must let me go". This line is important because she doesn't want him to hold onto the past. The colours in the flashback are bright and colourful. This shows that they were...show more content... Teddy's uniform changes from the tie, hat, suit, badge and coat to the clothing of the patients on the island. This is because he was closer to getting to the answer of the missing patient. When he went to the lighthouse, he found out his answer. Mr Crawley told Teddy "Your name is Andrew Laedis and you're the 67th patient. This line is important because he finally know who the 67th patient is. The director then used a close up to show Teddy's reaction. Teddy's costume changed throughout the film and it shows the progress of Teddy finding out the truth. This makes the audience speculate and we don't know why his costume changes throughout the film. Dolores is shown in a yellow dress in the flashbacks near the end of the film. This is because this is the last memory Teddy has of her. In the end of the film Andrew tells Dr Sheane "Is it better to live as a monster or die as a good man". The meaning behind this quote is that Andrew is uncertain of his future. In the end, we don't know if Andrew gets lobotomized in the film or not. This leaves the audience speculating what decision Andrew made in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Cinematography In Citizen Kane When watching Citizen Kane, the audience nearly doesn't need dialogue to enhance or intertitles to explain the events that unfold. The excellent cinematography alone tells the story to the viewer. The audience's awareness of the plot is due to the techniques behind the screen, the lens used, the composition, every technical and artistic decision made (Cowan 90). Modern films might be driven by words and accented by fancy color technology, but in this film, we the audience are able to derive emotions and the inner psychology of characters through lighting, spatial narration, and the ever–famous technique of deep focus. As with any non–color film, the right lighting is absolutely crucial. We might wonder if it would have been half as effective in color as it was in black–and–white, as the stark differences of the chiaroscuro lighting add a tremendous amount to the characterization of Charles Foster Kane. For example, while Kane is youthful and relatively wholesome (compared to an...show more content... This film is considered a "pioneer" of this technique (Hinrichs 60), although not the first time it'd been utilized. For example, it had been used on the titular character of the film Nosferatu to give him a sense of foreboding (Cook 101). Gregg Toland, the director of photography onCitizen Kane, had also used the technique before on his other films, such as his first film, Palmy Days (Cowan 87). It might be said that all these tremendous feats of cinematography, and therefore the success and critical praise of the film, are due more to Toland than Welles (Cowan 84). Either way, this film would undoubtedly not be as monumental without this extraordinary technique. It allowed for scenes to be more dramatic and for the enriching of them through the lightning mix (Cook 330). Interactions are layered, the plot grows more comprehensive, and yet it's all done through an unmoving camera – truly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Nosferatu Cinematography The cinematography of the film Nosferatu is the achievement from the entire film. This film is from the early 1920's and is considered a silent movie. This movie is also considered to be a German expressionist film, and was directed by F.W. Murnau. The cinematography was done by Fritz Arno Wagner and Gunther Krampf.Nosferatu influenced the Dracula productions later down the road, and introduced the idea that vampires can be destroyed by the sun. The ways that cinematography made the film is because it was influenced by the German Expressionist Movement. Which would make the film very symbolic and stylized since its considered a gothic horror film. Because of the German Expressionist Movement, the cinematography was considered of one of the most creepiest horror films in the horror...show more content... The low key wasn't used for a few scenes like the German countryside right before you enter Orlok's castle, which gave a contrast the castle. Another way that cinematography made the film would be the high contrast that can be seen throughout the film. The main object where the high contrast is shown throughout the film would be Count Orlok himself. It's mainly focused there because so that we can exactly see how he looks, which would be a pale face and long claw hands. There wasn't much camera movement in the whole film, which also gave that eerie feeling and made the shots very simple considering that they were long shots. Even though the film is considered to be low key, there was a few long shots and a few close–up shots to give the setting. There was at times where you can notice some point of view shots like when some of the characters were looking out the windows. There was also a low–angle shot that was noticed, which would be when Orlok is walking on the mast of the ship. There was a great close–up towards his coffin, when the rats were coming out of all the holes in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Cinematography Treatment Example The Might of Spite Plot Summary The movie is about a guy (Antagonist) and a girl (Protagonist) living together that get turns to do the laundry. The guy (Thando) is very lazy, watches TV the whole day and refuses to do the laundry even after the girl (Carrie), tries to force him physically. Carrie is miserable after that but then finds another way to get him of the couch. She tells him that his car is being stolen and when he gets outside, Carrie locks the door behind him. Thando sees his car isn't being stolen. He then sees the washing basket outside and sees Carrie through the window enjoying the victory and waving the key mockingly. Genre When filmmakers and movie critics refer to a film genre, they generally mean a specific...show more content... The TV room will be a bit darker though with pale look and feel to it because it is the antagonist's lair. The outside will have more of a bright contrast and colourful look to it, because the antagonist is out of his territory and that is where he will be defeated. The kitchen will have a more stable feel to it with some solid colours and shadows. Lighting Lighting shapes the realty in front of the lens, giving it depth or flatness, excitement or boredom, reality or artificiality. Light can fall on the scene in a variety of ways to create many different moods to help tell the story.* (Kodak: the art of lighting–notes, 2003) To amplify this laidback light hearted comedy, soft lines and shadows will be used more. In a comedy high key–light is usually used to amplify the narrative. This is what I will be doing but also use mixed lighting at one location. The TV room will have a different light setting that is gloomier than the high contrast the kitchen and the garden will have. This is because it is where the antagonist spends most of his time and there will be mixed light used that strategically falls on certain places. The sun coming through a window and or a lamp on a table will also be used as extras to get enough light on the subjects so that low key light won't be made. With the face of the antagonist in a darker part of the room the flicker of the TV will slightly be seen by using a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. City Of God Cinematography Essay The used of cinematography and camera movement is hands down one of the most, if not the most important thing of a good film. I believe that they are two of the things that make for a great film. So when asked to compare a scene from Raising Arizona and City of God, I had to choose two of my most iconic scenes in film history, the chicken chase from City of God and the diaper heist from Raising Arizona. In two of the most iconic scenes in movie history, it is only natural that a slew of camera techniques are used to tell the story of each particular scene, most of which are some of the same methods. One of the most noticeable parallels between the films is the camera lens and the use of shallow focus. Shallow focus is the main source of camera...show more content... While the use of shallow focus is something that is conspicuous throughout both of the scenes, Raising Arizona also feature a zoom shot when the camera focus switches subjects to the diaper package that has been dropped. A portion of framing is also a difference within each scene, though the framing is mostly level, Raising Arizona also uses a canted framing when shooting the running within the street. A high angle of framing is used in City of God, during the shooting scene. This is used to display more people on the screen and heighten the sense of panic. Crane shot and whip pan are also used in the scene of City of God, given the amount of individuals in that scene; whip pan is used quite a bit to get everyone in the shot. A crane is used at the beginning for parts such as walking down stairs. In City of God, a difference in speed rate is also a noticeable variance among the scenes. While all of these are slight differences, the most obvious deviations in technique are the camera movement. For Raising Arizona, the use of tracking shot and tilt are used specifically for the running scenes. While, in City of God, almost the entire scene is shot using a Steadicam, noted by the tremulousness of the camera during all of the moving Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Paul Conroy Cinematography In film, cinematography, or the making of a motion picture film, is a major key to creating the right movie. It has a major influence on the audience's experience while watching the film, from making the audience feel certain emotions to changing the whole genre of a film. Cinematography has many different effects on the feel of a movie, in which it can make or break it. During Buried, a film directed by Rodrigo Cortes, the audience witnesses many scenes in which the main character has lost hope or given up on trying to get out of the horrible situation he is in. Buried uses different types of cinematography like close–ups, overhead shots, and longshots to evoke a sense of lost hope. In one scene the audience sees that Paul Conroy, our main character, begins to make progress when he goes through a phone that was left in the box with him. He calls one of the numbers thinking that it could connect him to people that may help him. During Paul's conversation with his captures the audience sees a close–up of his face, helping to show the anxiety and panic that paul is feeling. He soon realizes...show more content... Buried uses close–ups to show the audience Paul's frustrations and anxiety, which both help to deteriorate his sense of hope throughout the film. This film also utilizes overhead shots to give off the feel of nothingness. This helps the audience to understand that Paul feels as if he is buried so deep and far from the outside world that no one will ever find him. In a film with one man based in one setting, the many different uses of the camera keeps the audience involved and thinking about what the main character was going through and how he must have been feeling. The way in which cinematography was used in buried helped to make the audience feel as if they were in the film and are experiencing everything that the actor Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Importance Of Mise En Scene And Cinematography introduction: in this essay, I will demonstrate the significance of understanding cinematography and mise–en–scene as a filmmaker and a spectator. without the ability of reading or understanding mise–en–scene and cinematography it would be extremely difficult for the spectators/audience to understand the visual storytelling the filmmaker is trying to attempt furthermore it would be even more difficult for the filmmaker to create a visual storytelling without at least knowing the power of mise en scene and cinematography. in mise–en–scene, we could start by looking at semiotics, thus, we could examine anything we do around us and in movies. one could not fully understand a movie and filmmaker insight without understanding and examine mise–en–scene and cinematography. In other words, mise–en–scene and cinematography is an effective and critically essential not only to the filmmaker but also to the spectators'."We know very well we must learn to read before we can attempt to enjoy"( 157–James Monaco–1977) the film I have chosen to analyze is inception. the movie is based on a character name Cobb which he is trying to get back home to his family, the movie includes themes on subconscious and dream world(s) in this essay I have chosen a 5–minute sequence from inception which starts from () to (). in the sequence I will analyze the cinematography and try to read the signs within mise–en–scene and hopefully get a better understanding of the movie and the filmmaker. • 8. The Impact of Cinematography on Our Life Essay In today's society, film is seen as a major form of entertainment that can also be used to convey certain messages and themes. An aspect of film that is often missed or taken for granted is the impact of cinematography. Cinematography is the art of motion picture photography. Over the years, cinematography has proven itself to be a major contribution to film, furthering its artistic value and evolving as time changes. In the beginning, when film was still an emerging form of technology, expression of artistic ideas was not a main concern for filmmakers. In the 1890's, Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean LumiГЁre, famously known as the LumiГЁre Brothers, invented the Cinematograph. This invention was the first film camera. It also...show more content... Although film at this time was still emerging, glimmers of art seemed to flow from the works from various pioneers. As cinematography was now emerging, new elements such as contrast, exposure and camera techniques also came about. Contrast is very important lighting technique used by cinematographers. Contrast is defined by the ratio of light and dark in an image. In terms of cinematography, contrast plays an important role in that it determines the mood of the scene. High contrast for example would make the scene darker. While higher contrast expresses a darker mood like evil, low contrast can indicate good or innocence. In the 1962 film version of To Kill A Mockingbird, Cinematographer, Russell Harlan uses contrast in an interaction with Scout and Bob Ewell. While Scout is sleeping in a car, Bob approaches her and stares at her. The shot shows Bob's face to be much darker than Scout's; an example of high contrast. This difference can be interpreted as a sign of Bob's evil nature and Scout's relaxed, innocent personality. Another aspect of cinematography is exposure. Exposure is defined as how much light passes through the camera lens. Exposure is often used by cinematographers to direct the audience's attention to one part of the screen, or to imply the mood of the scene (Cinematography). Overexposure lets more light through the lens whereas underexposure lets less light through the lens. An example of exposure used Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Overview of Digital Cinematography Digital Cinematography Introduction The technological advances in filmmaking and photography have helped artists and cinematographers create beautifully colorful stories without the burden of editing reels upon reels of celluloid. But with digital cinematography there are other issues that require attention and innovation, and this paper delves into one of those issues the ever–growing need for archiving digital movies and HD television production safely and effectively. This paper also proposes potential solutions for those issues. The Literature on Archiving The Digital Dilemma In the peer–reviewed journal Engineering & Technology journalist P. Dempsey explains that while more and more movies are entirely digitally produced including James Cameron's smash hit film "Avatar" the shift from celluloid to digital presents "major challenges for the communications business" (Dempsey, 2010, p. 1). Enormous amounts of data must be ""В¦moved around to create and manage high definition (HD) broadcasts for TV" and enormous quantities of data must be safely stored for movies as well. As cinematographers struggle to bring digital images in line with the "ever–higher resolution" achieved with celluloid images, which means that digital cinematography would achieve "a capture rate of 60 frames per second and a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixel" (Dempsey, p. 2). When that resolution is achieved, it will mean "point–to–point data rates" that approach 24Gbit/s, and that in turn will Get more content on HelpWriting.net

While most of the films these days entertain with amazing special effects or raunchy comedy, there are still films that thrive because of great acting, directing, and editing. Three films that I believe would be great examples of the way these aspects can cause a film to excel are ?Any Given Sunday?, ?The Cell?, and ?Almost Famous?. ?Any Given Sunday? shows how, by using editing, a movie can portray an intense situation realistically. In ?The Cell?, color is used to differentiate between how we see things in reality and how...show more content... Panning shots of cheering fans and screaming coaches along with occasional shots of the game being broadcast on a television with commentators giving their take on the action send the viewer back to the reality that they are only watching the action and not participating in it. While watching this movie you truly feel like you are in the game. ?The Cell?, instead of focusing on accurately portraying reality, takes you to the dream world. Catherine Deane, played by Jennifer Lopez, is a child psychologist involved in an experimental project that allows her to travel inside the mind of coma victims to try to draw them away from their fears and thus out of their coma. This movie portrays the journey inside the mind much like you would depict a dream. When Deane is inside a young child, whose main concern seems to be a fear of the ?boogie man?, the world she enters is a beautiful desert scene where the sky is bright blue with puffy white clouds. She is always dressed in bright white dresses and seems to glow. This depicts that she has earned the child?s trust. All color is brighter in this dreamlike world. Even though these experiments had not been successful bringing the child out of the coma, Dean was able to learn a lot about the child. This caused a couple of detectives to approach her about entering the mind of a serial killer who had slipped into a coma with the goal of discovering the location of his most recent captive. Within this context, Russell Carpenter's role as the cinematographer of the film Titanic is important. For instance, his attitude towards cinematography, especially his tireless effort to attain perfection contributed to the success of the film . In the film, Carpenter's co–operation with art department and visual effects department deeply influenced his role in the film as a cinematographer. From a different angle of view, close–up shots of the lovers (in the deck) provide richness and romantic touch to the scenes. On the other side, long–shots provide importance to the sinking of the ship. E. Sound In the initial stages of the production of the film Titanic, Cameron was not ready to use any song. When he listened to the song "My Heart Will Go On" sung by Celine Dion, he changed his mind and decided to use the same in his film. One can see that this song is one of the elements behind the commercial success of the film as an international hit. The film's musical element is contributed by James Roy Horner. One can see that Horner's music is deeply influenced by Celtic music. Besides, Horner was deeply interested to inculcate electronic elements to film music. From a different angle of view, the sound effect in the film leads the viewers from peace to chaos and vice versa. In addition, the sound effects contributed much to the commercial success and international fame of the film. One can see that sound designing is an integral part of the sound effects in a film. Within the context of sound designing of the film Titanic, Chris Boyes's contribution is noteworthy because he was keenly interested to inculcate natural sound to the sound track. • 13. Cinematography In The Help In the film 'The Help' directed by Tate Taylor, there are numerous scenes that help develop the major plot of the film. I found that one scene in the film is significant. This scene is the one where we see Skeeter walking into her mother's room to ask her about Constantine as she needs the story for her book. Her mother tries to cover up what had happened and it doesn't go down well with Skeeter. Tate uses many things like dialogue, characterisation, cinematography and theme, to develop the scene, that relates back to other references in the film. In this scene the purpose is to show us what has really happened to Constantine. This is expressed to us through dialogue and other techniques. But the dialogue used helps us feel the emotions...show more content... We can see that her saying this to Charlotte has made Charlotte under pressure and she says something she would of never said if it wasn't for Grace. "Get out of the house Rachel". We see Constantine trying to stick up for her child asking Charlotte if she could take her into the kitchen " Miss Charlotte, let me take her to the kitchen. Come on, baby. Let's go". Higgenbottom is appalled at this point. She briefly says "Charlotte". As Charlotte does not want to upset Grace she speaks something abruptly that triggers a climax of the scene. "Both of you. Leave. Now." We can see that from this dialogue here that there is a mist of tension in the room between Charlotte and Grace as Charlotte is trying to respect and impress Grace, However Rachel barging into their dinner, could see Charlotte's reputation turning bad so Charlotte does what she thinks is best and tells the two to leave. We can see from the dialogue that Charlotte was hesitant to say these things as she really did care for Constantine but her reputation was at stake. This brings forward the theme Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Cinematography In The Great Gatsby . The 2013 film is full of excess, there is excess of sounds, color and visual effects. The era, in which the film, and the novel take place, is the era of excess, the characters live excessive lives, thus the cinematography helps create a feeling of excess that runs through the film. The 1970s was the age of the zoom lense in cinema. In Clyton and Coppola's version, the scene where Gatsby and Daisy meet for the first time, there is a close up on their facial expressions. This helps the audience to understand the emotion that both characets are feeling and alsp it creates an intimacy between the two. • 15. This essay is about the movie Inglourious Basterds (2009) written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The significant elements of mise–en–scene in the film will be discussed, along with the film's elements of cinematography in the opening scene. Film often uses editing techniques in its storytelling that infer meaning, subtle though they may be. These techniques will be identified and discussed, and the meanings explained. Set in Nazi–occupied France during World War II, the film follows a group of Jewish US soldiers as they plan to assassinate the leaders of the Third Reich in a movie theater. Led by Allied officer Lieutenant Aldo Raine, played by Brad Pitt, the "Basterds'" plan coincides with the theater owner's vengeful plans for the same thing. The opening shot of a film is one of the most crucial parts of a movie. In the same way that an establishing shot introduces us into the scene, the opening shot introduces us into a movie. Although not the most memorable, the opening shot is important because the director can use it to convey the film's main ideas, premises or character arcs. Inglourious Basterds (2009) opens with a long shot of a farm: lush fields of green, small farmhouse, and a man (Denis MГ©nochet) chopping wood at the center. This is where action will take place. It is based upon Jon Krakauer's non–fiction book "Into the wild". The film follows the idealist Christopher McCandless on his journey to find peace and happiness. Some people might argue that McCandless was a reckless narcissist who brought great sorrow to his family and troubled the law enforcers. I am no professional analysist, but I think that McCandless was perceived as a noble but misguided idealist. Film techniques such as cinematography, mise–en–scene, and lighting used throughout the film support my judgement of McCandless. Cinematography plays a huge part in portraying McCandless's journey. In the film, a variety of camera shots are used to describe the setting and emotions of scenes. Before exploring cinematography and...show more content... To put it simply, McCandless wanted peace, ultimate freedom, happiness, and most importantly, a sense of adventure. He thought his materialistic parents and the corrupt society were preventing him from satisfying those desires, thus, he departed into the wild. This of course, was not a practical decision. Cinematography is used to show these emotions in scenes throughout the film. At the beginning scenes of the film, McCandless is shown riding on a train with close–up shots of the side of the trains which show McCandless's made–up name – Alexander Supertramp – written in chalk. The next few scenes show medium shots of moving trucks. The train scene featuring close–up shots of McCandless's name implying that he is free to be himself – freedom. The moving train create a sense of adventure and the use of trucks create a feeling of progress and change. Close–up shots of McCandless are used at the time of his death. These shots show a distressed McCandless who realises his ideals would lead to his death. Close–ups are also used to show his diary entries Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Some of these shots include, extreme close up (ECU), medium shot (MS), establishing shot (ES), and long shot (LS). Extreme close up is what a person may assume it is. It is used in filmmaking to focus on a particular detail of a subject. In many cases, ECUs are very intimate and are best used cautiously. Medium shot, also known as waist shot, is also what it sounds like. It is a shot from a medium distance and includes the body from the knees or waist up. An establishing shot may be one that people aren't as familiar with. An establishing shot is a usually long shot in film or video used at the beginning of a sequence to establish an overview of the scene that follows (Merriam–Webster). • 18. Cinematography In The Help In the film The Help, directed by Tate Taylor, an important scene included is when Eugenia, mostly known as Skeeter, confronts her mother Charlotte about her childhood maid Constantine. The main purpose of this scene within the film is to help Skeeter find the truth of why Constantine had left Skeeter and her family after all the things they had been through, for the audience watching this answers the story created within the film. Four significant aspects in this scene are dialogue, voice overs, cinematography and the use of sound effects. One aspect that stood out to me was dialogue. Dialogue is found at the start of the scene where Skeeter is finalising the book with the maids that helped to publish The Help, (Aibileen and Minnie), they said " So you just send it off then we wait" to which Skeeter replies "Well i still have one story left to type up but other than that were good" which the maids say "Which one you got left" , "Uhh, Mine" Skeeter replies. Skeeter wears more "in fashion" clothes and the maids clothes are more old and tattered. This links to the colour discrimination shown in the rest of the film. It is giving the viewers a look of the lifestyle of the maids compared to Skeeter's life style, as you can tell by the clothes they're wearing the maids are considered to be low class as the people of society. This scene was one of the main 'turning points in the film, it helps the viewer get answers as to who Constantine is as a character and why she is so important to impact Skeeter's life so much. It showed this with a variety of techniques such as the use of dialogue, sound effects, cinematography and costume with characters. This expanded the story by gaining more ideas on the character's relationships with one Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In the particular scene instructed, analyzing this part took a while to understand why the director use of cinematography as well as editing, were in these particular scenes. The beginning of the scene where Cathy and Melanie return to the living room and sit down, gave a demonstration of the use of the wide angle. As I analyzed the shot from the beginning of the scene, I understood the purpose of why this particular angle was used.
