which meant to bring ease in nation's lives, brought laziness and obesity. Ultimately, many others

Moreover, many Americans do not engage in physical activities throughout the daily life, using their
car even if they go to the nearest 7–Eleven store, for a minor grocery purchase. Sitting all day in
front of their computers in the office, or behind a desk is not going to help them burn the calories
they ingested today after going for lunch with a friend in one of the fast–food restaurants. Relying so
much on transportation while people have other options like riding a bicycle, walking, or jogging,
but they never do and this is another cause for obesity (Surgeon General, 2010, para 4). Using
technology limitlessly such as computers, tablets, and especially cell phones made majority of this
nation lazy. Instead of visiting family and friends physically, people call them. Rather than going
for shopping, many other orders online and surprisingly, its delivered fast too, as a result, people

2. Causes and Effects of Adult Obesity Essay
Introduction Although many individuals are uncertain about the increasing statistics associated with
obesity, more than seventy percent of men and virtually sixty–two percent of women within the
United States adult population are overweight or obese (Wilmore, Costill, & Kenney). Obesity
refers to the condition of having an excessive amount of body fat. If an individual's amount of body
fat becomes too excessive, he/she is at a much greater risk of developing life–altering diseases such
as heart failure, hypertension, type II diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, etc.
(Wilmore, et al., 2008). Heart failure is a condition in which the heart muscle becomes too weak to
maintain an adequate cardiac output to meet the body's...show more content...
Overweight is often misinterpreted as obesity, but it has been proven that individuals such as
bodybuilders and professional athletes can be overweight yet they do not suffer from obesity.
Obesity refers to just excessive body fat whereas overweight refers to excessive body weight
including water, bone, fat, and muscle. A certain amount of fat is needed to store energy, heat
insulation, shock absorption, and other functions, but when men reach more than twenty–five
percent body fat, and women reach more than thirty percent they are considered obese. A person's
body mass index (BMI) is measured by dividing body weight in kilograms by the square of body
height in meters (Wilmore, et al., 2008). Individuals who suffer from obesity often experience
various symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, sleep apnea, shortness of breath, gallstones,
depression, and skin problems. Sleep apnea happens when an individual experiences irregular
breathing patterns or even loss of breath during sleep. Gallstones are hard, pebble–like deposits that
form inside the gallbladder. They appear in many different sizes and shapes. Some gallstones may
be the size of a sand crystal whereas others may be the size of a golf ball. Depression simply refers
to a feeling of overwhelming sadness and a sense of hopelessness. In addition to obesity leading to
other health problems, obesity stems from numerous causes such as genetic, environmental, and
sociological factors. Other

3. Cause And Effect Essay On Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity has become a major epidemic in the United States. "The percentage of children
with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since 1970." The current childhood
obesity rate in the United States is 18.5 percent. That means that one of every five children in the
United States is classified as obese. "Both the short term and long term effects of overweight on
health are of concern because of the negative psychological and health consequences in
childhood." Children with obesity are at a much higher risk of having serious health conditions
such as asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, type 2 diabetes, and risk for heart disease.
There are many factors that contribute to childhood obesity. Diet, lack of exercise, psychological
factors, socioeconomic factors, and sleep are all leading causes of childhood obesity. "Body
mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on your weight in relation to your height, and
applies to most adult men and women aged 20 and over." When determining if a child is
overweight it is best to use the BMI percentile. "Kids who measure at the 85th to 94th percentiles
are considered overweight, because of excess body fat or high lean body mass." Anything above
the 94th percentile would be considered obese. A poor diet is a major contributing factor to
childhood obesity. "A poor diet containing high levels of fat or sugar and few nutrients can cause
kids to gain weight quickly." Sugary beverages, snack foods, and portion size are all contributing
factors in a poor diet that is leading to childhood obesity. The increase in number of fast food
restaurants found in the United States is cause of concern. Children are eating more and more fast
food every day. "Every day, nearly one–third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely
packs on about six extra pounds per child per year and increases the risk of obesity, a study of
6,212 youngsters found." Portion sizes have increased over the past decade and consuming larger
portions can contribute to excessive calorie intake. In addition to a poor diet, a lack of exercise is
also a major contributing factor to childhood obesity. Children are just not outside riding bikes and

4. Obesity : Causes And Effects
Causes of Obesity Obesity refers to the condition of having an extra amount of body fat. Obesity
is caused by eating too much and moving too little. When an individual's amount of body fat
becomes too high, they are at a greater risk of being affected with life changing diseases such as
heart failure, hypertension, type II diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, and others.
This shows that people should become more physically active and attempt to make healthier
choices because their life depends on the decisions, they make. Every day while sitting on the
couch eat a burger, and soon many people learn what the obesity hype is all about. Fast food
companies are advertising more food for less money with fast service. The media tends to change
images for their target customers, to make the food more appealing to those that are watching.
Laziness is one of the main causes of obesity in our country. Obesity in the United States is at a
high due to the increasing fast food chains, media influence, and a lack of exercise. The idea of
having a meal made for them in less than five minutes is somewhat exciting to the view of many
individuals." fast food firms introduced these alternative meals in response to changing consumer
tastes"(Buchholz). Many fast food stores offer the customer fast service, and a great tasting meal.

Obesity is one of the major health epidemics that human being struggle to deal with it. Obesity is
a chronic disease characterized by excessively high body fat in relation to lean body mass. In the
last 20 years, people started complaining that fast food is the main cause of rising obesity.
However, a lot of research proves that fast food is not the source of obesity. The rising obesity
problem cannot be blamed on the fast food industry; there are several other factors leads to
obesity. Over the years, many attempts have been made to associate fast food with obesity and
health effects. All over the world, people did not change their desire of eating fast food for that
claims. The lack of controlling them self from eating a lot of quantity is one of the obesity
causes. "Over the past several decades Americans have steadily gotten fatter. Although our
increasingly sedentary lifestyles are partly to blame, a big reason for our national weight gain is
that we 're simply eating more". (Harding) Therefore, People should schedule and count the time
that they eat fast food, so they can control them self from eating fast food all the time. They have
to do their best not to eat fast food as a daily consumption. Fast food might cause obesity only in

factors associated with obesity. First and foremost the genetic make up that plays a role in fat
deposition and fat burning. Also if both the parents are obese, the risks of the child being obese are
high. In addition to that age also plays an important factor that might hinder the calorie–burning
process and aggravates the fat accumulation. It is also said that since women have less muscle
mass, they manage to burn lesser calories than the men and hence have a higher risk of obesity. If

8. Obesity : Causes And Effects Of Junk Food
In the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Heart disease
is the number one cause of death and cancer is the second, both causes of death are the effects of
consuming junk food. Junk food is fast food, snacks, and sugary drinks that have little to no
healthy nutrients, such as McDonald's burgers, Pepsi, and Twinkies. Since junk food is mainly
sugar and fat, fat tends to accumulate and therefore can create health issues such as diabetes. Due
to Junk food, the main source of obesity and other health risks, junk food taxes have been
implemented to influence people to change to a healthier lifestyle. Junk food taxes should be
increased to increase awareness of the health problems. Many people enjoy junk food because they
claim that it tastes better than healthy food, however, junk food contains many calories and
excessive amounts of sugar. According to Mark Bittman, a writer for the New York Times,
addresses in his article "Bad Food? Tax It, and Subsidize Vegetable," that greatly due to junk food,
one–third of Americans either have diabetes or are pre–diabetic, whom mostly have Type 2 diabetes

9. Cause And Effect Of Childhood Obesity
Cause and Effects of Childhood Obesity Childhood obesity is when a child is well above the
normal weight for his or her age. The United States General Surgeon has identified obesity as one of
the greatest health problems facing the nation today. It has become the number two cause of death in
the United States among youths and teenagers. Everyone has their own philosophy and theory on
the cause of obesity. However, the main causes are poor nutritional choices, lack of physical activity,
and lack of education and awareness which in return can have a long–term effect on the health and
well–being of a child. Poor nutritional choice is one of the main causes of obesity. Children today
eat too much fast food and do too much excessive snacking. These foods are high in fats, sugars,
salts, calories and have too many carbohydrates. Fast food restaurants are everywhere in our
society thus increasing the risk of obesity. Mothers often prepare prepackaged dinners, which
contain a lot of salt and fat. Children over indulge in beverages such as soda, juices with added
sugar and sweet teas, cookies and candy. Vending machines are the source of drinks and snacks that
have a high calorie count, and these are accessible to children in many locations, especially schools.
By cutting some calorie intake, it can help weight control. The second cause of childhood obesity is
the lack of physical activity among our children. Children are not participating in enough exercise at
school or at home.

When you think of the general health of America, what first comes to mind? Most would likely
answer this question along the lines of our population being overweight. Obesity is one of the
leading causes of death in the US with at least 30,000 people dying from this disease each year
(Obesity Epidemic). Obesity symptoms often arise at an early age and can lead to an array of
issues well beyond excessive weight gain, but who is to blame? Many critics attribute the
explosion of the disease to the widespread growth of the fast food industry, the expanding social
media world, the reduction of physical activity in schools, unhealthy food in schools, or even
genetics. However, individuals must take personal responsibility for their health. Obesity's roots can
be seen from the start of life, or even pre–birth, and it is up to adults to help teach children how to
live a healthy lifestyle. Some may just blame it on genetics, but parents that allow and promote kids
to consume unhealthy food are greatly responsible for allowing the disease to flourish. Also, not
including any physical activity in their children's daily life contributes to the obesity epidemic. So
what is being done? Many schools districts across the country have introduced prevention methods
like nutrient education, but are these really effective? The real question is, if people don't take
personal responsibility will American's unhealthy habits ever really change? Beyond the very real

11. Obesity : Causes And Effects
Obesity has been a topic of debate for decades. The prevalence of obesity in children in the United
States has continued to rise, and there is still much debate on whether one thing or another
causes obese effects. According to a Micro simulation analysis, one in three children in the US
between ages 2 and 19 were obese between 2009 and 2010 (Kristensen et.al, 2014). Support has
been shown that these numbers have only been increasing, as researchers have uncovered more
about how childhood obesity manifests itself in our youth. As with many disease processes,
obesity is of multifactorial origin. Genetics, social manipulation, and environmental factors such
as diet and upbringing are all delegated to being causes of obesity. As environmental factors
become habits in young children, genetics carries the weight of problems that children will have
later in life, including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and behavioral problems, just to
name a few outcomes (Porth, 2011). It is important to understand the cause and effects of
childhood obesity, and implicate how childhood obesity is a multifactorial disease. Obesity is an
excess in body fat, characterized by enlarged fat cells and higher than normal BMI. The CDC
currently states that a child is overweight if the child's BMI "is at or above the 85th percentile and
lower than the 95th percentile of other children who exhibit the same age and gender (CDC,
2014)". A child is obese if their BMI "is at or above the 95th

So much of what occurs in this world is a result of cause and effect. For instance, if a match is
struck; a flame ignites, if water is put on the flame; the flame is extinguished, if more fuel is
added to the fire; the fire gets bigger. A major problem in our society today, the problem of obesity,
results from cause and effect. While many factors are involved, the causes for obesity are ultimately
from choices made by individuals. One of the causes for the continuing rise in obesity in the United

While fast food is not the best choice of food to eat, it can be fine if eaten in moderation, and if
children want to eat fast food too much, parents should just say "no". Some parents blatantly state
that they don't not have the control to resist buying unhealthy products for their children. They
make it seem like they truly do not have a choice of whether they choose to feed their children
healthy food or junk food, either because their children demand it or because they are are ignorant
about other healthier alternatives. It is humorous to imagine a parent being driven by some
powerful force driving through a fast food line or shopping in a grocery store and the unhealthy
literally food jumping in shopping cart itself. It is a funny thought but that is almost what it is
made to seem like. Recently there was a shocking story in the news about a toddler in Indonesia
that smokes numerous cigarettes a day, the parents of the toddler say it is basically too difficult
to get him to quit. There was an uproar from shocked parents around the world, claiming child
abuse. While of course it is a tragedy for such a thing like a toddler smoking to occur, and in no
way should ever be condoned, there is some hypocrisy involved there. Some of the parents who
were disgusted by the story and condemned the toddler's parents are in fact hypocrites, for they are
also guilty of knowingly making unhealthy choices for their children, that could be as detrimental to

Americans with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher are considered to be obese. Obesity has

15. Causes and Effects of Obesity
Obesity occurs in all countries and it is one of the gravest problems in modern society. Mankinds
around the world are concerned about obesity. One of the chief causes is unhealthy diets. Obesity
is also due to lack of exercise and lack of education and awareness. Therefore obesity has various
effects include risk of suffering from a range of health conditions, large fiscal expenditure on
medical insurance and lack of self–esteem. One of the chief causes is unhealthy diets. There are
high–calorie foods in daily diets like chocolates, sugar, cheese and butter. Teenagers eat more and
more high–fat burgers and pizza in fast food restaurants. For example, in Mexico, students drink
cola rather than water due to the short of hygienic drinking water. Coca cola made agreement with
many schools that they would exclusively sell Coca cola inside the schools. Therefore, Mexicans
are considering being the most obese country which will have 70% overweight people including
30% obsess in the future. (Vivien Altman and Marianne Leitch, 2012). Some people judge
traditional food healthier; however, some traditional foods are extremely oily as well. For example,
Chinese pay attention to use oil to heat the ingredients quickly. This makes the food fairly oily and
high–fat. Furthermore, diets nowadays are changing according to civilization globalization. Food
culture is influenced by foreign fast food like KFC and McDonalds' which provide junk foods all

In the year 2000, roughly 30 percent of 20 year olds in America were obese. By 2003 that number
had risen to 32 percent. That is a small window of increase. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, the
percent of obese Americans doubled. This means that in 1970, only 15 percent of Americans
were obese, and in the thirty years following, obesity took a sharp rise. In 1960, 13 percent of
Americans were obese. The mean percent rise per year in the 1960s was 0.2 percent. The mean

In 2013, the Harvard School of Public Health published a study they had conducted that found
that on average it would cost $1.50 more per day for one person to eat healthy rather than an
unhealthy diet. "Over the course of a year, $1.50/ day more for eating a healthy diet would
increase food costs for one person by about $550 per year. This would represent a real burden for
some families" (Harvard). For the average American family, this could pose a serious problem. The
median household income in America in 2015 was $57,000 (United States Census Bereau). The
average family size in 2016 was above 3 people (United States Census Bureau). This means that for a
common American family, the increased spending is almost $2000, or 3% of their yearly income.
That is a significant amount of money that most Americans would rather save, or simply spend on
things that they deem more important than a healthier diet.
Childhood obesity can lead to a life long struggle with obesity. The National Institutes of Health
discovered that "The percentage of overweight Children has increased, by almost 50% in the last
two decades of the 20th century... It has also been observed that about 40 percent of overweight
children will continue to have increased weight during adolescence and 75–80% of obese
adolescents will become obese adults" (National Institutes of Health). This proves that the increase in
childhood obesity has led to an escalation in obesity in adults.

18. Obesity: Developement Responses In The Body
Obesity is known to produce a number of stress and inflammation responses in the body that lead to
the activation of the inflammatory signalling molecules, Jun NH2–terminal kinase (JNK) and
inhibitory kB kinase (IKK). Activation of these pathways plays a key part in the development of
insulin resistance followed by progression to diabetes as they greatly affect inflammatory responses,
insulin signalling, and lipid and glucose homeostatis (Nakamura et al. 2014). For example, activating
the JNK pathway leads to serine phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate (IRS) proteins which
results in inhibited insulin signalling and thus insulin resistance. Double–stranded RNA–dependent
protein kinase (PKR) has recently been shown to control the JNK and other major inflammatory
pathways, to directly inhibit insulin signalling, to be activated by fatty acids as well as
endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and to be necessary for the activity of inflammasomes
(Nakamura et al. 2010; Komiya et al. 2010; Lu et al. 2012). Moreover, PKR has been found to be
highly activated in obese people as well as mice with genetically and diet–induced obesity, especially
in adipose and hepatic tissues (Boden et al. 2008; Nakamura et al. 2010; Carvalho–Filho et al.
2012). Finally, recent studies have found that PKR knockout obese mice were protected against both
IR and obesity–triggered inflammation and that administration of PKR inhibitors reduced JNK
activation, reduced inflammation in adipose

However, leptin is still very much in early experimental stages, because even though it may gauge
how much fat you have it does not at this point tell how much you want.
Another recent breakthrough was the discovery of unocortin. Unocortin appears to suppress
appetite when the body is under severe stress. It is a cousin of the brain chemical that generates
the body's "fight or flight" response. Unocortin was discovered at the Salk Institute, when a
researcher was studying a neuropeptide which activates body stress reactors. He noticed receptors
in parts of the brain where the chemical did not exist. However, it may be a long time before
unocortin is actually a consumer drug. At this time, the only way unocortin works is to be directly
injected into the brain. A company called Neurocin Biosciences, is already researching the brain
receptor unocortin locks onto to work.
For now, the serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs are the only diet drugs being used in the U.S. These
drugs work by affecting eating behavior. Eating behavior is the result of a mixture of
neurotransmitters. The link between serotonin and eating disorders was discovered in the early
1980's. The serotonin inhibitors include Lovan, Redux and phen–fen (Phentermine and
Fenfluramine). Phen–fen is the drug combination currently recieving so much attention. Phentermine
is similar to an amphetamine and it works to increase metabolic rate.

When looking more specifically at the demographic breakdown, the CDC reports between 2006
and 2008 that Blacks had the highest number of cases of obesity at 35.7% followed by Hispanics
and Whites at 28.7% and 23.7% respectively. These findings can be attributed to the behaviors and
social norms that differ between ethnic groups about weight gain, appropriate body weight, as well
as disparities in access to healthy foods, and safe environments to exercise. The CDC noted in their
study that "the high prevalence of obesity across all the racial/ethnic groups highlights the

shows that nearly 20% of the total US population are obese, with 21% of Medicare and 30% of
Medicaid recipients self–reporting that they were obese.

risks for many more. Some of these diseases include coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer
(endometrial, breast and colon in the top three), hypertension or high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, and many
more. When coupled with the aforementioned causes of obesity, we can see that it is a vicious cycle.
