The Possibilities, Conventions and Devices of the Comic...
Henning Wagenbreth is a German illustrator, designer and typographer. He has illustrated many books (for both children and adults), posters,
newspaper and magazine editorials and comic strips (Wagenbreth 2014: ONLINE). For the purpose of this analyzing a narrative text, I have chosen his
comic strip series called 'Plastic Dog'. I will specifically focus on the two comics shown as Figure 1 and Figure 2.
In general, the essay will be a deconstructive analysis of the possibilities, conventions and devices of the comic strip as a narrative text. Within this
analysis, the essay will examine the postmodern characteristics of 'Plastic Dog'. It will also investigate how these characteristics can help the reader to
better understand the narrative possibilities of the comic form and the meaning–making strategies within it.
According to Mieke Bal (1985: 5) a narrative text is a text that tells some kind of story (Bal 1985: 5). A story is a "series of logically and chronically
related events that are caused or experienced by actors" (known as the fabula)(Bal 1985: 5) and are presented in a certain manner. The question that
will guide this essay is whether the comic form is only primarily geared towards the telling of a 'story' opposed to an experience in which narrative is
secondary to the visuals.
The 'Plastic Dog' comics epitomize a postmodern point of view. This means that they disrupt the boundaries between high and low art and are written
and illustrated through pastiche and

The Law Of Non Contradiction
For Leibniz, both his development of calculus and his faith intersected within the law of non–contradiction along with identity and substance
(Blumenfeld 1987). For the law A=A, every single predicate that can be said of one 'A ' must be held for the second 'A '. It is a proposition that is
either true or false, and a cornerstone notion for Kant in relation to 'god ' and morality. Also, known as the Law of non–contradiction. Concerning the
Law of Identity, Leibniz reasoned that it could only be satisfied as a law in the abstract. Or, what could be said in the realm ofmetaphysics, or a different
ontology. He concludes that because nothing in our sensory experience satisfies that law. If nothing in our sensory world does not satisfy this law, it
follows that this law is not of this world or has a different ontology. Therefore his 'math ' intersects with his view of 'god ' as sharing in being
'metaphysical '. Concerning the relationship between logical necessity or 'essential ' relation, against contingency, and its relationship to God, Leibniz
articulates this in the following passage taken from the 'Theodicy ': "These essences and these truths emanate from the same necessity of nature as the
knowledge of God ... God saw from all eternity and in all necessity the essential relations of numbers, and the identity of the subject and predicate in the
propositions that contain the essence of each thing" (Leibniz 1996, 129). And, regarding the soul he writes: "In

Saving Face Research Paper
What do "saving face" and "giving face" mean in the the context of cross–cultural differences." When saving face or giving face there are different
levels of importance, depending on the culture you are dealing with". " Face is a multi–faceted term, it is linked to culture, honor and there opposite
humiliation".(This is according to the reporting in Ting–Toomey, Stella, A Face Negotiation Perspective Communicating for Peace. Sage, 1990) Saving
face tends to be the more well known, probably because it conserns your self. Many people believe saving face is only about maners, but in some

The Peopls Princess Essay
The "People's Princess" Diana Frances Spencer was born July 1,
1961, at Park House near Sandringham, Norfolk. She was the youngest daughter of three (Sarah b. 1955 and Jane b. 1957), and she had a younger
brother Charles (born 1964). Her parents were Viscount and Viscountess Althorp, now the late (8th) Earl Spencer, and the Honorable Mrs.
Shand–Kydd, daughter of the 4th Baron Fermoy. Earl Spencer was Equerry to George VI from 1950–1952, and to the Queen from 1952–1954, when
he married Diana's mother. Her parents separated in 1967 after her mother left her father for another man, and the marriage continued to dissolve until

But soon the cameras caught up with "Shy Di," who at 19 charmed the world with her fresh beauty and innocence. On February 24th
1981, it was officially announced that Lady Diana was to marry The Prince of Wales. The fairytale romance of
Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles raised worldwide interest in Britain's royal family. Engagement pictures showing the smiling couple, and
showing off Diana's engagement ring, an 18 carat sapphire surrounded by diamonds, were splashed across everything from newspapers to souviners
such as coffee mugs. The heir to Britain's throne and his beautiful princess–to–be brought forth admirers by holding a storybook wedding with all the
royal trappings imaginable. Di's dress was of silk tafetta with a 25 foot long train. She had 5 bridesmaids, including Princess Lady Sarah Armstrong.
Crouwds packed London streets and millions watched worldwide on television as Charles 32, and Diana, 20, exchanged vows at St. Paul's Cathedral
on July 29, 1981. The wedding reception was held at Buckingham Palace. Diana was the first English woman to marry a heir to the throne for 300
years. The couple honeymooned in Hampshire and aboard the royal yacht Britannia in the Mediterranean. The 12– year age differance between the
prince and princess seemed to matter little at this stage. Princess Diana

The 's Impact On Society
Deconstructionism has impacted society today due to the effects of reading and the difficulty of defining the word from the sole creator, Jacques
Derrida, and how other philosophers have influenced it. Although there is a definition for the school of thought Deconstructionism, it has been
confused with different definitions due to the influences of other philosophers on the definition given by Derrida. One philosopher that influenced
Deconstructionism was Friedrich Nietzsche, whom we usually associate to Nihilism. The other philosopher that influenced this school of thought was
Ferdinand de Saussure, who was one of the two founders of semiology. "It must be noted that Derrida 's style of writing contributed not only to his great
popularity but also to the great animosity some felt towards him. His style is frequently more literary than philosophical and therefore more evocative
than argumentative" (Lawlor). According to Derrida, in essence, the definition of Deconstructionism is the way of reading and understanding the
difference between "text" and "meaning". The school of thought itself is notoriously difficult to define, and attempts to explain it in a straight–forward
way, understandable way have been academically criticized for being too removed from the original texts, and even contradictory to the concepts of
Deconstructionism. In an article for Postmodernism, it states, "Because at its functional level all language is a system of differences, says Derrida, all

Language Arts
Language and Art share many similar tendencies. In language, as with earlier forms of Art, representation plays a large role. Language acts as a
representation of some elaborate envisioned concept(s), Writing as a representation of a sounded phonic language, and Art as a representation of some
subject(s). Within these mediums exist elements that make Art and Language and, by extension, Writing successful. оЃўese are the signifiers. оЃўe
signifiers are built imperfectly, they summon up signs other than those intended based on frequency of usage, misusage and place contextually. оЃўey
are influenced by a multitude of extra–textual forces. It is from these axioms, that Structuralism and thence, Deconstructivism take form.

оЃўe essence remains 'wanting' and exists always in some transcendental plane.
Art and Philosophy aim to defamiliarise the viewer or reader to some established norm. Philosophy aims to describe things that are fundamental nature
of 'knowledge, existence and ethics' (Webster's Online Dictionary), things that are inherently difficult to explain in plain language. It is only through a
complex system of resonance between signs that philosophy can be successful and hone the right tone of capturing a desired essence. оЃўe abandoned
sired signs are leо‚ќ to the side, defamiliarised and alienated to yield a complete perception of one concept at the sacrifice of several.
F. S. Hussain / ENGL411. (Begley) / 1. DiffГ©rance as de–familiarisation (19th Feb. '10)3
Derrida's essay, for example, wishes to point out how diffГ©rance in signs can point to something completely extra–textual. All of his references that he
"sacrifices" to produce a value of diffГ©rance are outside and pre–produced.
In the same vein, Art wishes to hone the viewer's attention to some smaller aspect of the larger canvas or something completely outside. Take Picasso's
1937 painting La Guernica, the aesthetic aim was for the signifiers (the magnified Cubist heads) to signify the terror of the Spanish Civil War, an
action completely extra–textual. In Literature, the works of James Joyce invoke something outside of the discourse. 'Ivy Day in the Committee Room'

Binary Oppositions From Multiple Forms Within This Poem
Binary Oppositions appear in multiple forms within this poem. We find the pairs of conflicting words and the readers are expected sort out which
words have the ideal interpretation to the poem. Most of these pairs are descriptions about the pebble, the "coldness (line 9) and the "false warmth"
(line 14) skew our interpretation of this pebble. Pebbles are naturally cold but the text tries to resolve this fact by presenting warmth to the pebble.
Yet the pebble did not produce this warmth itself, a living creature is required to generate the heat and to transfer it to the pebble. Also, the pebble
will not be able to maintain the warmth once the heat source is taken away, thus "false" warmth. The pebble does have the potential to harness this
warmth so is it really a cold being or a warm one? These conflicting ideas help to unravel the validity of the poem. The same can be done with the
words "coldness" (line 9) and "ardour" (line 9), or its "fierce or burning heat" (Oxford English Dictionary). These words are given to the reader in the
same line yet they hold completely unique ideas to the pebble. Is ardour heat that the pebble theoretically can hold or is it a kind of burning heat
that a person feels due to emotions? A reader could also question how a pebble "cannot be tamed" (line 15) yet also be "mindful of its limits" (line 4).
These are all human qualities which are getting placed onto the pebble, and due to the limitations of pebbles we can understand these binary

Ernest Hemingway's A Clean, Well-Lighted Place
After a countless amount of readings of Ernest Hemingway's short story "A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" I have often contemplated what it all means.
I've previously been told by my undergraduate professor that the story has no intrinsic meaning or value. I refuse to believe that is true. All stories can
have multiple meanings that are buried deep beneath the text. It just requires an extensive analyzation of the short story. Why would the story be
written if it had no meaning? In this paper, I will search for meaning in the text that is primarily described as an exploration of existential nihilism. In
order to analyze the story, I will deconstruct the meaning. The short story is filled with holes. Not only is there meaning within the text, but ... Show

Instead, you enter a world of ambiguous conversations surrounding suicide and nihilism. The short story introduces an ideology of agnosticism and
atheism that challenges the ever powerful, and meaningful, religious ideologies. In this case, the agonistic worldview is oppressed compared to an
ideal religious ideology. Another idealistic feature within the text is being youthful. The younger waiter in the story is privileged because he has
many years ahead of him, a wife, and he believes he has a more meaningful life. The oppressed and unappealing people in the text would be the old
deaf man and the old waiter that are in the story. With the younger waiter being privileged in the story, it is essential to challenge and reverse the
powerful hierarchies that romanticize being youthful and having "meaning" in ones life. When the younger waiter refuses to let the old man stay and
drink in the cafe he assumes that the old man can go drink elsewhere. He doesn't realize that he needs the cafe, because it is nicely lit and it is quiet.
Not only is the waiter closing the cafe earlier than usual, but he mentions that an hour means more to him than it would to the old man. The text states,
"'Why didn't you let him stay and drink?' the unhurried waiter asked. They were putting up the shutters. 'It is not half–past two.' 'I want to go home to
bed.' 'What is an hour?' 'More to me than to him.' 'An hour is the same'" (381). At this point in the story, the older waiter is telling the young man that
he was wrong for sending the old man away. When the younger waiter to state that his time is more valuable than the old man, this shows how the
older people in the text are being oppressed. According to Rolfe, "To reverse the resident hierarchy, only to displace it, that is, to expose and challenge
binary opposites in the text, to expose the

Whiteness And Racism
In the past, and even today, "the whites" in United States had constructed the issue of racism and has directed it towards certain ethnic groups
throughout history to show superiority. This is referred to as "Whiteness", which is a socially constructed reality; This means one's skin color shapes a
person's view and lifestyle and is not inherent in an individual but determined by society. The term "whiteness" does not necessarily hint at one's skin
color or heritage but rather is a social position within society. The ideology states that different ethnic groups within the United States must reach
whiteness in order to gain a social advantage to benefit themselves. This can result in certain groups to essentially abandon their culture as well as the
others who associate themselves with the said ethnic culture. This grants ethnic groups to obtain a small amount of "whiteness" but are not completely
seen as white until the race as a whole is accepted and seen as something that is considered white culture.
Whiteness has been the reason for affecting national identity within the United States, primarily because of the development of racism and how it has
been directed towards specific groups. These groups, unlike others, have failed and continue to fail at attaining a high social position, due to the fact
that some of the first groups were racially incorporated in society and were seen as a threat to those who held a "white", or the highest, status in society
compared to other

Essay on Discrimination in The Merchant of Venice
Discrimination is a resounding theme in The Merchant of Venice (Meyers). All of the characters are affected by inequality. This inequity is evidenced
clearly in Shylock, the Jewish usurer. He is treated with scorn and derision by all the characters. Shylock's misfortunes stem not from poor attributes
or even a poor background; it stems from the fact he is Jewish, and what is more, he is impenitent of that distinction. If he had been more daunted by
Christian influence, he might have been forgiven, as Jessica is subjectively exonerated. He is not contrite and it is believed that his appalling birth
cannot be absolved (Bonnell).

male counterparts.
The cycle of hatred and animosity are evident in The Merchant of Venicemost clearly through Jessica's deplorable treachery of Shylock (Blanchard).
The theft of his money and jewels was considered by the Christians a credit to her integrity rather than the consummate maliciousness it truly is.
She is absolved from any culpability for her betrayal of Shylock; she is praised for her ability to deceive and defraud her father in a culture that
sanctioned paternal piety (Picker). She marries the Christian Lorenzo in hopes of improved egalitarianism; she soon discovers that this will not be
the case. Her profound guilt and strict upbringing as a Jewish female are revealed in the conversation between herself and Lorenzo: Jessica: I am

Discussion
The results of the regression test comparing dissolved carbon dioxide in parts per million with salinity in parts per thousand at depth show that there is
a correlation between the data as they have a p value less than 0.01 (Figure 8). Comparatively, the results of the regression test comparing dissolved
carbon dioxide in parts per million with salinity in parts per thousand at the surface show that there is a correlation between the data as they have a p
value less than 0.01 (Table 9). Since the test are run with a confidence level of 95% the values indicate that the data is related, both tests confirm the
hypothesis that as salinity increases the amount of dissolved carbon dioxide deceases (Zhang, 2017). The data taken from ... Show more content on

Therefore the hypothesis that saltwater has a lower solubility of gases and therefore has a lower level of dissolved carbon dioxide is confirmed.
Conclusion
The study comparing salinity and dissolved carbon dioxide indicate that there is a significant correlation between them. This is due to both regression
tests in the field showing a negative correlation between the two values, and the lab conducted in class showing saltwater to diffuse less carbon
dioxide and freshwater. Therefore this study confirms that the level of dissolved carbon dioxide in water is inversely proportional the salinity of that
water.

Robert Bly 's Iron John
The Mythopoetic Men's Movement was targeted at white, middle class, middle aged (most likely heterosexual) males, started in the 1980s and lost
popularity in the late 1990s. The movement was started with the idea that men have essentially gone soft, become too feminized, lost their masculine
identity, and need to recover it (Orthmann). Robert Bly, a pioneer of the MMM, found that the Industrial Revolution was to blame, as it left boys
without proper father figures to help usher them into manhood (Fox). In Bly's novel, Iron John: A Book About Men, he suggests that the solution to
the loss of masculinity is for men to look within themselves and do soul searching through the use of Jungian psychology. In Jungian psychology, there
is the concept of the "shadow," basic animal instinct, and "anima," the female part of the men's subconscious (Fox). The MMM focuses on using these
archetypes and combining the positive aspects of both in order for men to be maturely masculine, which they define as being strong, wild, "reliable,
spiritual...emotionally open, truthful, loving, cooperative, and liberational" (Gremillion). The "anima" archetype seemingly dominates this definition.
This is different from the stereotypical idea of the "macho man," where men are over aggressive, and not encouraged to express their sensitive feelings
and emotions. Bly, who is a poet, believed that men could find themselves through understanding their own stories and experiences, poems, and myths,

Binary, Differance, And Privilege In Shakespeare's Hamlet

There is the idea in Shakespeare's Hamlet, that Hamlet will forever be mourning his father's murder. No matter how hard Claudius tries, he will not
be able to fill the role of father to Hamlet due to the fact that he murdered his father and immediately married his mother. Claudius can consider
himself the "loving father" as much as he wants, however, it is his destiny in the play to play the opposite toward his nephew/son (ACT IV scene iii).
The differance is that Hamlet ends up with two fathers entwined as one, instead of leaving behind one and accepting the other. In the play Hamlet,

Gertrude has sex with her dead husband's brother, and this contemplation causes confusion in Hamlet's life. Hamlet does not know if Claudius is still
his uncle or if he should he allow him to replace his father. The role that Claudius plays becomes undefined in his nephew's life the second that he
marries Gertrude. Claudius as the murderer takes on the masculine role in the play; this role changes from masculine to feminine when Gertrude
willing lies to her son, concealing that she knows Claudius murdered her husband. The focus shifts to how Gertrude has wronged Hamlet because she
represents the only thing that Hamlet has left. This creates an inevitable imbalance among their relationships, especially when a sexual relationship
forms, creating an even stronger imbalance in his life, especially so soon after his father's death. Hamlet's world had already changed significantly with
the death of his father, which deeply affects his mental state putting Hamlet in an increasingly fragile state. When he found out that his mother had
withheld the truth from him, it caused him to question everything in the world. This also created a binary opposition directed toward Claudius, who is
trying to keep Hamlet from figuring out that he is the murderer. All of this evidence connects back to Hamlet's insult laden with the

William Shakespeare 's Hamlet
Bloody Uncle: Binary, Differance, and Privilege in Shakespeare's Hamlet
There is the idea in Shakespeare's Hamlet, that Hamlet is still and will forever be mourning his father's murder. No matter how hard Claudius tries, he
will not be able to fill the role of Hamlet's father due to the fact that he murdered Hamlet's father and immediately married his mother. Claudius can
consider himself the "loving father" as much as he wants, however, it is in the theme of the play for him to be the opposite toward his nephew/son

King Hamlet. That no matter what Claudius will be responsible for the loss of Hamlet's father, and the sexual experiences of his mother therefore,
never being able to be the father figure to Hamlet.
In this situation, difference appears when Hamlet is not able to let go of his father and accept Claudius in the role of the father figure. This causes
Hamlet to lash out at Claudius in ACT IV scene iii around line 45 "... Farewell, dear mother". In this quote Hamlet is mocking Claudius' idea that he
can be his loving and caring father. By referring to him as his mother, he is essentially telling Claudius that he knows that he killed Old King Hamlet

Examples Of Mimeti In Hamlet
Hamlet is nearer to the narrator in a play of Chikamatsu than to a chorus. Yet, he is different from both. Unlike them, he is an intruder. He speaks to
the players from the outside of the play and speaks to the audience from the inside of the play. In this sense, he is alien to both. He is a narrator, a
wielder of Lexis. Unlike the chorus, he is a single person with a voice of his own. Furthermore, unlike the narrator in the Japanese puppet theatre, he is
visible. Unlike both, Hamlet seems to impose his story both on the players and on the audience. In this sense, his subjectivity intrudes on the illusion of
objective representation. By speaking to the player, he violates one of the conventions of dramatic representation, the illusion of the fourth wall. This
fourth wall keeps another illusion in the mind of the audience. We may call this kind of illusion the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We know that many actors being famous for such or such a role become confused with the character they once represented. On stage, as on the screen,
the actor's self is absent to make present the character's self. This absence secures the illusion of identification between the character and the actor. This
identification is not a one–way process. Indeed, as the actor acquires the name, the words and the acts of the character, s/he gives him/her his/her
physical features (appearance, voice, etc.). This applies also to theatrical props and other theatrical devices. Narration, on the contrary, does not provide
for such illusions. Oral narration, nevertheless, retains a certain amount of theatricality. Yet, unlike theater, it relies not on the illusion of presence, but
on the illusion of continuity. The Ghost of Hamlet is a case in point. He needs the theatrical art of assuming not to reproduce presence but to reproduce
continuity. In this light, we may read the Ghost's "remember me"(Hamlet, I, v, 91.) as indicative of this urge of

Derrida actually commences the essay with a reservation regarding the word "event", as it entails a meaning "which it is precisely the function of

simultaneously universal and thus natural, while also at the same time as "a system of norms and interdicts" (283): it is cultural. The contradiction
encountered by Levi–Strauss is that the difference established in the nature/culture binary opposition is erased or at least questioned. Due to this
erasure of difference the origin of this prohibition becomes unthinkable as the "whole of philosophical conceptualisationВ…is designedВ…" (283/284)

Civilizations Compare Similarities And Differences Of...
Early Civilizations compare similarities and differences The two Early Civilizations I have picked for Task 1 part B are Mesopotamia and Egypt. The
characteristic from part A is the key geopraphical features. I would like to highlight some similarities and differences, with a decription of the two
civilizations. The similarities from the key geopraphicals features in both civilizations are the famous rivers. Mesopotamia has two rivers named Tigris
and Euphrates nessseled down in the valleys. Egypt was also setteled near an important body of flowing water called The Nile River. All three rivers
were the main reason new cities developed with larger societies of people. The rivers are a natural resourse, the unpredictable flooding allowed

Analysis Of Fun Home By Alison Bechdel
Alison Bechdel, a literary and queer theorist herself who would go on to coin the Bechdel test, grew up in close proximity to theory. In a family of
academics, with her teacher father and former actress mother, Bechdel was always surrounded by literature, so when it comes to self discovery of her
sexuality, it's no surprise that she turns to the literary realm, from Rubyfruit Jungle to the Oxford English Dictionary, to understand herself. Bechdel's
first graphic memoir, Fun Home, examines her upbringing in a funeral home with her cold mother and her closeted bisexual father, who commits
suicide soon after Bechdel leaves for college. It engages in frequent literary and theory illusions, beginning from the mention of Icarian Games on the
very first page. While Bechdel's work seems like it could be easily situated in structuralist theory, the work easily lends itself to a multiplicity of
meanings, an inherent feature of deconstruction work that allows readers to veer into feminist theory, queer theory, or even Marxist theory. Just as
Bechdel rewrites and reframes the events of her formative years multiple times throughout the novel, the novel particularly lends itself to structuralist,
deconstruction, queer, and feminist theory, which all lead to particularly illuminating readings that compliment each other. Fun Home perhaps most
glaringly fits into the literary theory of structuralism, and its application becomes easy as soon Bechdel introduces the readers to her father's constant
rebuilding of their home on page 5. One of structuralism's main tenants is understanding the world as discursively constructed, meaning that there is no
inherent essence or nature that informs one's production, whether that be behavior or presentation or style, and that one then understands the world
through binary opposition and discourse (Parker 77–81). Bechdel's father produces a perfected period piece facade for the Bechdel home, which
simultaneously indulged his obsessive love for home decor, an interest usually only allowed for homosexual men, while providing the facade of an
idealized happy homeplace. Analyzing the home's surface structure would prove unfruitful for conveying any of the internalized conflict of the family,

Personal Narrative: My Time On Track
My 20time is on running. In sixth grade I tried out for track, hoping I will be fast enough and would make it. But it didn't turn out that way. It was at
lunch with all my friends when I checked the track website and didn't see the name, Carly Jakob, on the list. I was so shocked i started bawling my
eyes out. After this traumatizing day I made a goal that I will make the track team when i'm in eighth grade. To do this I knew I had to make many
drastic changes. I changed my diet to proper eating habits, and learned facts about form and technique that would help me get through the horrifying try
outs and right onto the team.
To make the track team I have to have a proper diet and know the differents between carbs and sweets.well it was in my best interest too, I didnt really
want to. I just wanted to make yhe team so bad I needed to do whatever is possible. I cut out many foods out of my diet, candy, and lots of frozen
meals which I ate a lot of. I knew it will take a lot to get used to.

for a membership at the gym, the Y. I started going three times a week. I had a day for abs, legs, and arms and and I saw a differance in my muscles
immediately.
After I got the membership I went crazy at the gym. I started going to boot camp and zumba which was my FAVORITE! it was so much fun because
you can dance and have a good time while you have fun with all of your friends. I would go everyday with my best friends ever and we would have a

Bambitchell's Silent Citizen
Critical Art Reflection on Bambitchell's Silent Citizen
Silent Citizen powerfully explores the ways that language is constrained and wielded as to shore up state power. Bambitchell's participatory art piece
highlights how the use of the English language proficiency test is an exclusionary state practice–the subjugating effects of which are masterfully
communicated through the utilization of silence. Pairing the power of language and silence to not only talk about the ways language structures our
ability to function in space, but to also expose how testing environments are indicative of the states immense disciplinary role, marks an important shift
in understanding how differential oppositional consciousness is cultivated (Sandoval, 62). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This piece highlights the ways in which diverse identities are erased under the guise of a homogenized national subject. This project imagines
multiculturalism and assimilation politics within a dystopian lens, which calls "proper" citizen subjects into question by engaging them in the very
structure that sustains power in "proper" sites and bodies. I found reciting the test excited thoughts of my own history in relation to citizenship, as I was
reminded that my parents had to successfully complete this exam. This project boldly unmasks how representational tactics fail to engage with the
diverse and varied backgrounds of those it claims to support, and instead creates a grotesque amalgamation of normative immigrant identities that works
to reinstate the model assimilated minority. This is explored within Gloria Anzaldua's work as she highlights that one of the crucial steps in reimaging
the postmodern subject is unlearning the implicit ways that reality is shaped by dualisms (Anzaldua, 9). The use of dualistic thinking in understanding
cultures, bodies, spaces, and lives remains one of the ways that duality maintains structural racism, xenophobia, and exclusionary

The Nature Of Freedom By Jacques Derrida
In The Politics of Friendship, Jacques Derrida boldly declares: "no deconstruction without democracy, no democracy without deconstruction."
Accordingly, this democracy to come could not exist without some semblance of freedom. This deconstructive form of freedom is certainly not an
individual freedom to do as one pleases, nor is it simply freedom from constraint. The freedom which constitutes deconstruction is aporetic in nature,
thus making it difficult (or rather impossible) to give a straightforward definition. However, this lack of a definition for freedom is not a problem
for Derrida. In fact, the undefinable nature of freedom is the condition for its existence. If a full definition of freedom were to be given, its ability to
thrive would be crushed. However, this does not mean that discussions regarding the nature of freedom are without meaning. In discussing what
freedom could be, what freedom could mean, one can better understand how to maximize freedom in both societies and our individual lives. To
recognize the tension that lies within the word freedom is to better understand what its existence could actually entail. During an interview in 2001,
Derrida stated the following regarding his suspicion towards "Freedom": "In my opinion, the most "free" thought is one that is constantly coming to
terms with the effects of the machine. That's why I rarely use the word "freedom" in the way I know you do ... I will fight for specific freedoms, but I

Analysis Of Niranjan Mohanty's 'Damaghosa'
Professor–poet Niranjan Mohanty is an adventurous voyager, a silent sailor in the sea of Indian English poetry. Basking in the radiant sunshine of life,
he illumines Indian tradition and culture through his eight volumes of poems and gives an aura of Keatsean possibility of maturity in form and
content. "Damaghosa" a poem which appears in "Tiger and other poems" volume (1999) is a mytheopoic study of an important character from The
Mahabharat. The poem, 'Damaghosa', though small but a 'knot' in the poetic craftsmanship of poet Mohanty, what lands him in the realm of versatility
for its treatment of flux of life, morality and death. Further, the poet himself admits the fact that "he cannot be free from the tigers of his desire that
approach to the fence of his bones' whiteness. He is always being chased by the tiger." (Sarangi – 99). He likes to celebrate tiger as he knows that "the
theme song of the jungles is the tiger" ( Mohanty– 83) It "comes to him unwarranted, unsolicited" ( Sarangi–87) For poet Mohanty, the tiger symbolizes
"hunger, sexuality, death and silence" (Sarangi –130). He is so much possessed with the metaphor of tiger that while composing a poem, it seems to
him that a tiger sleeps "Silently between lines" (Mohanty – 91). Thus, both tiger and the poet have their own identity revealing multidimensional life
form and meaning. Considering these aspects, the present paper aims at a deconstructive study of Mohanty's poem "Damaghosa". Deconstruction is one

The Four Theories Of Passive Audience Theory
Active Audience Theory
Four theorists are the contributing authors of the active research theory. These authors evolved the role audience play and their ability to actively
engage with communication medians. The idea of deconstructionism was the focus of the work of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault during the
1960's. Later in the twentieth century theorist Raymond Bauer developed The Obstinate Audience. In the early 1980's a theorist by the name of Stuart
Hall challenged the traditional theories of an audience role in the media and developed his encoding/decoding theory. Each contributed to the current
understanding of the active role audiences engage in when information is presented. In this section a brief description of the earlier theory of the
audiences as passive viewers will be presented to provide a background of the role of the audience. Next, the major theorist and their contributions to
the active audience theory will be presented. The section will end with a summary of active research theory and its contribution to communication
medians today.
Passive Audience Theory
During the early 1900's audiences were considered to be passive, an audience that merely observed events rather than actively responding to the event
in the media. During this time, several theories were developed on the media's ability to provide information to a group of people that did not think
about the information just simply receive the information. Hypodermic Needle Model by Katz &

Jacques Derrida was a french philosopher, best known for his semiotic theory of "Deconstruction." The term surfaced in he world of design journalism
in the mid–1980's, questioning the place of modern design in the theory of deconstruction.
Derrida introduced the concept of 'deconstruction' in the 'Book of Grammatology,' published in France in 1967. In this theory, deconstruction questions
how representation inhibiits reality. How does the surface get under the skin? In the Western fields of science, art, philosophy and literature, oppostions
such as– Inside/outisde, reality/representation and mind/body are often used. Normally, one side of these pairs is valued over the other. This might be

In graphic design, deconstructivism gave its name to one of the majoy typographic movements, starting in the early 1980's and contunuiing in the

Deconstructive Analysis: The Yellow Wall Paper
Deconstructive Analysis: The Yellow Wall Paper Deconstruction or poststructuralist is a type of literary criticism that took its roots in the 1960's.
Jacques Derrida gave birth to the theory when he set out to demonstrate that all language is associated with mental images that we produce due to
previous experiences. This system of literary scrutiny interprets meaning as effects from variances between words rather than their indication to the
things they represent. This philosophical theory strives to reveal subconscious inconsistencies in a composition by examining deeply beneath its
apparent meaning. Derrida's theory teaches that texts are unstable and queries about the beliefs of words to embody reality. Deep–seated in these...

the text through to the end we know that she is in a mental hospital, a reader could most likely begin to imagine what John may have been thinking

Prejudice Against Native Americans Essay
Prejudice Against Native Americans
These people began migrating thirty thousand years before Christopher
Colombus "discovered" the Americas. Native Americans migrated from Asia, crossing a land bridge where the Bering Strait off the coast
of Alaska is today.
Over the centuries these people spread throughout the continents of North and
South America. Since the arrival of the Europeans in 1492 the American Indian has been dehumanized, decivilized and redefined into terms that
represent a dominate European view. The Spanish explorers under Colombus were the first to use the terms "Indian" to mean a Native

man's property. They believied that they were alowed to occupy it by the grace of the "Great Spirit", in return the tribes took care of the
land the used. Usually Native Americans harbored a great respect for the land they were allowed to use . When the
European leaders attempted to purchase this land from the tribes the Native
American leaders often thought they did not have the authority to sell the land.
In their view the land wasn't theirs to sell. Often times, payment offered was refused because of this view The Europeans, on the other hand, did not
understand or care to understandthe Native American way of life, culture or philosophy. Instead, they saw the land as a great buisness oppurtunity to
be bought and sold. Sometimes payment was accepted because the American Indians did not fully understand the consequence or implications of the

Europeans feared these new people with a seemingly savage way of life. The dances and othe cultural traditions that Native Americans practiced were

Toni Cade Bambara's My Man Bovanne
How did "My Man Bovanne" by Toni Cade Bambara explored the diverse kinds of love that affects the human experience. Bambara suggests that it
is also possible to have a spiritual connection with another person based on nothing more than shared humanity, and not just sexual and familial love.
She introduces this concept in "My Man Bovanne." Miss Hazel's family misinterprets her association with Bovanne as a sexual one, and her decision
to bring him home at the end of the story seems to back up their view of her. However, she credibly suggests that her relationship with Bovanne is
based on empathy, not sexual or romantic desire. She is not bringing him home from a wish for sex, but from a wish to take care of him. This idea of
spiritual connection is based on empathy. Even though the narrator and Bovanne seem to have little in common besides their age, they can form a
profound and meaningful connection because the narrator tries to comprehend what Bovine's life is like. She sees how others treat him, and pays
attention to how these interactions affect him. The same conflict between the narrator and her children comes from the fact that her sons do not take

The Meaning Of A Hero : My Hero
All people in the wolrd have heros. For every person it may be differnt however they all seem to come together since they all have great meaning.
The meaning of what a hero is all means the same however, the differance is how people put it to action. In the dictionary hero means someone who
is admired and/or is idealized for their courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. My hero is my aunt Michelle because she affects me in
such a positive way because she is supportive, caring and insparational.
My Aunt Michelle is very supportive of me in many ways. To start with, she takes me anywhere Iwant to go. She runs my friends and I to Dutch
Brothers all the time when we ask. She also brings me Dutch at school if I'm very tired that day. If my friends and I ever want to drive anywhere or
go to the mall, she will drive us. My aunt also drives us to the beach a lot on the weekends or to a hiking place. Other than the coffee runs and the
places, she goes to any events I have. Michelle goes to any event I have for volleyball or dance. On the other hand, Michelle is the one that also goes to
all my high school events. She goes to anything AVID related and anything the school holds and haves. Lastly, Michelle just helps me over all in
anything I need. The biggest thing she helps with is my stress level because I have very bad

stress and I am very often stressed, so she makes sure to help in anyway she can. Besides my stress, she helps me with my homework whenever I need
it, even if she doesn't understand what
the questions are she pushes through and does the best she can when my dad can't help. That is why my aunt is very supportive to me and is my hero.
Michelle is also very caring to my older sister and me. She is always there to take care of me when I'm sick. She goes to get me soup and a water
because it makes me happy when I'm
sick. Also she will check on me constant to make sure if I was needing anything she would get it for me. Other than when I am sick, she also
watches what I do to make sure I'm okay. My aunt puts herself in front of me when anything dangerous happens, when my dad is gone, she takes over

Difference Between Semiotics, Semiology And Difference
What is Semiotics, Semiology and Difference? In this paper I will define the Semiotics, Semiology and Difference then I will give the views and
beliefs of the three of the masterminds behind these terms.
Firstly, Semiology and Semiotics are two related disciplines, which study semiotics, the relation of significance involving signs, object and mind, and
classification of signs. Semiotics is a synonym for Semiology. Semiotics is defined as the study of signs and symbols and their interpretation, while
Semiology is semiotics, the study of signs. According to Swiss Linguist and Semiotician Ferdinand de Saussure semiotics is the science of signs.
Saussure in Course in General Linguistics, said "the roles of signs are part of our social life". For him, sign has two parts, the signifier and the
signified. The signifier is the physical form of the sign. The signified is the concept to which the signifier refers the meaning or idea it refers to in ...

additional element is the understanding of the relation between signifier and signified, he referred to this as the interpretant. The interpretant sheds
light on the relationship between signifier and signified. Pierce admonishes that a sign or signifier must be interpreted in order to exist. The sign or

Many young people today between 16 – 24 show a lot of interest in the election. It is one of the biggest days for our country so yes young people will
take inerst in it. 18 isnt a magical number its just an age, why can't 16 or 17 year olds vote? They should have a say on who is leading the country,
who is passing our bills, who will make decisions for our country.Yes maybe only 34% of young american's voted in 2012 but thats because there was
no drive for voting.
Let's say that you were able to vote at 16, all of your friend's would get together and decide who there voting for, and you would most likely go vote
with them. With the youth now there all conected to each other so thus means a larger amount would vote. So to say that "The 16 – 18 age group
would be even less involed" is totally false. If they were able to vote it would make them feel like there actually doing something for this country they

Character Analysis Of Our Town By Thornton Wilder
Our Town Character Analysis "Our Town" is an American classic written by Thornton Wilder in 1938. Even though it was written over 50 years ago it
still resonates deep within its audience,"Our Town" is full of relatable characters that everyone has known at some point in their lives. For instance,
Mrs.Gibbs is the mother figure in this play that we all wish we had or reminds us of our own warm and kind mothers. She is one of the characters that
helps spur the play's main theme: Mortality. The 3 acts of "Our Town" show her transition of being full of emotions & passion to being impassioned
and numb.

Doc. Gibbs then reminds her of their wedding and how despite his initial worries, they have been talking for almost thirty years. Later at the

scene is not only important because she pushes through George's fears but because this is the last time we see her alive.
Nine years have passed in the town Grover's Corners ,and most of the people that were introduced previously are dead. In this act Mrs.Gibbs
doesn't have a specific role other than to act as a somewhat mother figure for Emily(who recently died from childbirth) and to demonstrate how
death can change your perspective. Her motherly status is now cold and stoic instead of the warm personality she had in previous acts. She is one
of the first people to tell Emily that being dead is now her life and that she shouldn't go back. However, when Emily is going to back anyway,
Mrs.Gibbs tells her to pick an unimportant day in her life. When Emily gets back from the day Mrs.Gibbs tells Emily an equivalent to an"I told you
so". Mrs.Gibbs maternal instincts help Emily adjust to her death which is one of the scenes that cements the theme of "Our Town".

oppositions, he employs them to expose the nebulous distinction between lover and enemy, as well. He asserts that the Vietnamese prostitutes do not
distinguish between lovers and enemies: "we fought / the brothers of these women / we now run to hold in our arms" (24–26). The narrator refuses to
identify the prostitutes and their brothers as North or South Vietnamese, prompting at least two interpretations of these lines. First, America officially
identifies the communist North Vietnamese as enemies. This American lover/North Vietnamese enemy binary stabilizes America's participation in the
war by assigning a natural origin to the hostilities. It sanctions America's participation, by divine mandate, to liberate South Vietnam from Communism.
If the brothers are North Vietnamese enemies, the prostitutes' sexual consolation of American lovers appears irrational, and through their consolation,
the Vietnamese prostitutes forge a strange nexus between the American lovers and its official enemies. Once again, the prostitutes create a triad from a
binary. The triad delimits the binary opposition and deconstructs its implicit lover (American–essential–human)/enemy (North

The Possibilities, Conventions and Devices of the Comic Form

  • 1. The Possibilities, Conventions and Devices of the Comic... Henning Wagenbreth is a German illustrator, designer and typographer. He has illustrated many books (for both children and adults), posters, newspaper and magazine editorials and comic strips (Wagenbreth 2014: ONLINE). For the purpose of this analyzing a narrative text, I have chosen his comic strip series called 'Plastic Dog'. I will specifically focus on the two comics shown as Figure 1 and Figure 2. In general, the essay will be a deconstructive analysis of the possibilities, conventions and devices of the comic strip as a narrative text. Within this analysis, the essay will examine the postmodern characteristics of 'Plastic Dog'. It will also investigate how these characteristics can help the reader to better understand the narrative possibilities of the comic form and the meaning–making strategies within it. According to Mieke Bal (1985: 5) a narrative text is a text that tells some kind of story (Bal 1985: 5). A story is a "series of logically and chronically related events that are caused or experienced by actors" (known as the fabula)(Bal 1985: 5) and are presented in a certain manner. The question that will guide this essay is whether the comic form is only primarily geared towards the telling of a 'story' opposed to an experience in which narrative is secondary to the visuals. The 'Plastic Dog' comics epitomize a postmodern point of view. This means that they disrupt the boundaries between high and low art and are written and illustrated through pastiche and ... • 2. The Law Of Non Contradiction For Leibniz, both his development of calculus and his faith intersected within the law of non–contradiction along with identity and substance (Blumenfeld 1987). For the law A=A, every single predicate that can be said of one 'A ' must be held for the second 'A '. It is a proposition that is either true or false, and a cornerstone notion for Kant in relation to 'god ' and morality. Also, known as the Law of non–contradiction. Concerning the Law of Identity, Leibniz reasoned that it could only be satisfied as a law in the abstract. Or, what could be said in the realm ofmetaphysics, or a different ontology. He concludes that because nothing in our sensory experience satisfies that law. If nothing in our sensory world does not satisfy this law, it follows that this law is not of this world or has a different ontology. Therefore his 'math ' intersects with his view of 'god ' as sharing in being 'metaphysical '. Concerning the relationship between logical necessity or 'essential ' relation, against contingency, and its relationship to God, Leibniz articulates this in the following passage taken from the 'Theodicy ': "These essences and these truths emanate from the same necessity of nature as the knowledge of God ... God saw from all eternity and in all necessity the essential relations of numbers, and the identity of the subject and predicate in the propositions that contain the essence of each thing" (Leibniz 1996, 129). And, regarding the soul he writes: "In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When saving face or giving face there are different levels of importance, depending on the culture you are dealing with". " Face is a multi–faceted term, it is linked to culture, honor and there opposite humiliation".(This is according to the reporting in Ting–Toomey, Stella, A Face Negotiation Perspective Communicating for Peace. The Peopls Princess Essay The "People's Princess" Diana Frances Spencer was born July 1, 1961, at Park House near Sandringham, Norfolk. She was the youngest daughter of three (Sarah b. 1955 and Jane b. 1957), and she had a younger brother Charles (born 1964). Her parents were Viscount and Viscountess Althorp, now the late (8th) Earl Spencer, and the Honorable Mrs. Shand–Kydd, daughter of the 4th Baron Fermoy. On February 24th 1981, it was officially announced that Lady Diana was to marry The Prince of Wales. The fairytale romance of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles raised worldwide interest in Britain's royal family. The heir to Britain's throne and his beautiful princess–to–be brought forth admirers by holding a storybook wedding with all the royal trappings imaginable. Di's dress was of silk tafetta with a 25 foot long train. She had 5 bridesmaids, including Princess Lady Sarah Armstrong. Crouwds packed London streets and millions watched worldwide on television as Charles 32, and Diana, 20, exchanged vows at St. Paul's Cathedral on July 29, 1981. • 7. The 's Impact On Society Deconstructionism has impacted society today due to the effects of reading and the difficulty of defining the word from the sole creator, Jacques Derrida, and how other philosophers have influenced it. Although there is a definition for the school of thought Deconstructionism, it has been confused with different definitions due to the influences of other philosophers on the definition given by Derrida. One philosopher that influenced Deconstructionism was Friedrich Nietzsche, whom we usually associate to Nihilism. The other philosopher that influenced this school of thought was Ferdinand de Saussure, who was one of the two founders of semiology. "It must be noted that Derrida 's style of writing contributed not only to his great popularity but also to the great animosity some felt towards him. His style is frequently more literary than philosophical and therefore more evocative than argumentative" (Lawlor). According to Derrida, in essence, the definition of Deconstructionism is the way of reading and understanding the difference between "text" and "meaning". The school of thought itself is notoriously difficult to define, and attempts to explain it in a straight–forward way, understandable way have been academically criticized for being too removed from the original texts, and even contradictory to the concepts of Deconstructionism. In an article for Postmodernism, it states, "Because at its functional level all language is a system of differences, says Derrida, all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Language Arts Language and Art share many similar tendencies. In language, as with earlier forms of Art, representation plays a large role. Language acts as a representation of some elaborate envisioned concept(s), Writing as a representation of a sounded phonic language, and Art as a representation of some subject(s). Within these mediums exist elements that make Art and Language and, by extension, Writing successful. оЃўese are the signifiers. оЃўe signifiers are built imperfectly, they summon up signs other than those intended based on frequency of usage, misusage and place contextually. оЃўey are influenced by a multitude of extra–textual forces. It is from these axioms, that Structuralism and thence, Deconstructivism take form. Jacques Derrida ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... оЃўe essence remains 'wanting' and exists always in some transcendental plane. Art and Philosophy aim to defamiliarise the viewer or reader to some established norm. Philosophy aims to describe things that are fundamental nature of 'knowledge, existence and ethics' (Webster's Online Dictionary), things that are inherently difficult to explain in plain language. It is only through a complex system of resonance between signs that philosophy can be successful and hone the right tone of capturing a desired essence. оЃўe abandoned sired signs are leо‚ќ to the side, defamiliarised and alienated to yield a complete perception of one concept at the sacrifice of several. F. S. Hussain / ENGL411. (Begley) / 1. DiffГ©rance as de–familiarisation (19th Feb. '10)3 Derrida's essay, for example, wishes to point out how diffГ©rance in signs can point to something completely extra–textual. All of his references that he "sacrifices" to produce a value of diffГ©rance are outside and pre–produced. In the same vein, Art wishes to hone the viewer's attention to some smaller aspect of the larger canvas or something completely outside. Take Picasso's 1937 painting La Guernica, the aesthetic aim was for the signifiers (the magnified Cubist heads) to signify the terror of the Spanish Civil War, an action completely extra–textual. • 9. Binary Oppositions From Multiple Forms Within This Poem Binary Oppositions appear in multiple forms within this poem. We find the pairs of conflicting words and the readers are expected sort out which words have the ideal interpretation to the poem. Most of these pairs are descriptions about the pebble, the "coldness (line 9) and the "false warmth" (line 14) skew our interpretation of this pebble. Pebbles are naturally cold but the text tries to resolve this fact by presenting warmth to the pebble. Yet the pebble did not produce this warmth itself, a living creature is required to generate the heat and to transfer it to the pebble. Also, the pebble will not be able to maintain the warmth once the heat source is taken away, thus "false" warmth. The pebble does have the potential to harness this warmth so is it really a cold being or a warm one? These conflicting ideas help to unravel the validity of the poem. The same can be done with the words "coldness" (line 9) and "ardour" (line 9), or its "fierce or burning heat" (Oxford English Dictionary). These words are given to the reader in the same line yet they hold completely unique ideas to the pebble. Is ardour heat that the pebble theoretically can hold or is it a kind of burning heat that a person feels due to emotions? A reader could also question how a pebble "cannot be tamed" (line 15) yet also be "mindful of its limits" (line 4). These are all human qualities which are getting placed onto the pebble, and due to the limitations of pebbles we can understand these binary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ernest Hemingway's A Clean, Well-Lighted Place After a countless amount of readings of Ernest Hemingway's short story "A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" I have often contemplated what it all means. I've previously been told by my undergraduate professor that the story has no intrinsic meaning or value. I refuse to believe that is true. All stories can have multiple meanings that are buried deep beneath the text. It just requires an extensive analyzation of the short story. Why would the story be written if it had no meaning? In this paper, I will search for meaning in the text that is primarily described as an exploration of existential nihilism. In order to analyze the story, I will deconstruct the meaning. The short story is filled with holes. Not only is there meaning within the text, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, you enter a world of ambiguous conversations surrounding suicide and nihilism. The short story introduces an ideology of agnosticism and atheism that challenges the ever powerful, and meaningful, religious ideologies. In this case, the agonistic worldview is oppressed compared to an ideal religious ideology. Another idealistic feature within the text is being youthful. The younger waiter in the story is privileged because he has many years ahead of him, a wife, and he believes he has a more meaningful life. The oppressed and unappealing people in the text would be the old deaf man and the old waiter that are in the story. With the younger waiter being privileged in the story, it is essential to challenge and reverse the powerful hierarchies that romanticize being youthful and having "meaning" in ones life. When the younger waiter refuses to let the old man stay and drink in the cafe he assumes that the old man can go drink elsewhere. He doesn't realize that he needs the cafe, because it is nicely lit and it is quiet. Not only is the waiter closing the cafe earlier than usual, but he mentions that an hour means more to him than it would to the old man. The text states, "'Why didn't you let him stay and drink?' the unhurried waiter asked. They were putting up the shutters. 'It is not half–past two.' 'I want to go home to bed.' 'What is an hour?' 'More to me than to him.' 'An hour is the same'" (381). At this point in the story, the older waiter is telling the young man that he was wrong for sending the old man away. When the younger waiter to state that his time is more valuable than the old man, this shows how the older people in the text are being oppressed. • 13. Whiteness And Racism In the past, and even today, "the whites" in United States had constructed the issue of racism and has directed it towards certain ethnic groups throughout history to show superiority. This is referred to as "Whiteness", which is a socially constructed reality; This means one's skin color shapes a person's view and lifestyle and is not inherent in an individual but determined by society. The term "whiteness" does not necessarily hint at one's skin color or heritage but rather is a social position within society. The ideology states that different ethnic groups within the United States must reach whiteness in order to gain a social advantage to benefit themselves. This can result in certain groups to essentially abandon their culture as well as the others who associate themselves with the said ethnic culture. This grants ethnic groups to obtain a small amount of "whiteness" but are not completely seen as white until the race as a whole is accepted and seen as something that is considered white culture. Whiteness has been the reason for affecting national identity within the United States, primarily because of the development of racism and how it has been directed towards specific groups. These groups, unlike others, have failed and continue to fail at attaining a high social position, due to the fact that some of the first groups were racially incorporated in society and were seen as a threat to those who held a "white", or the highest, status in society compared to other ... This inequity is evidenced clearly in Shylock, the Jewish usurer. He is treated with scorn and derision by all the characters. Shylock's misfortunes stem not from poor attributes or even a poor background; it stems from the fact he is Jewish, and what is more, he is impenitent of that distinction. • 17. Robert Bly 's Iron John The Mythopoetic Men's Movement was targeted at white, middle class, middle aged (most likely heterosexual) males, started in the 1980s and lost popularity in the late 1990s. The movement was started with the idea that men have essentially gone soft, become too feminized, lost their masculine identity, and need to recover it (Orthmann). Robert Bly, a pioneer of the MMM, found that the Industrial Revolution was to blame, as it left boys without proper father figures to help usher them into manhood (Fox). In Bly's novel, Iron John: A Book About Men, he suggests that the solution to the loss of masculinity is for men to look within themselves and do soul searching through the use of Jungian psychology. In Jungian psychology, there is the concept of the "shadow," basic animal instinct, and "anima," the female part of the men's subconscious (Fox). The MMM focuses on using these archetypes and combining the positive aspects of both in order for men to be maturely masculine, which they define as being strong, wild, "reliable, spiritual...emotionally open, truthful, loving, cooperative, and liberational" (Gremillion). The "anima" archetype seemingly dominates this definition. This is different from the stereotypical idea of the "macho man," where men are over aggressive, and not encouraged to express their sensitive feelings and emotions. Bly, who is a poet, believed that men could find themselves through understanding their own stories and experiences, poems, and myths, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Claudius as the murderer takes on the masculine role in the play; this role changes from masculine to feminine when Gertrude willing lies to her son, concealing that she knows Claudius murdered her husband. Unlike the chorus, he is a single person with a voice of his own. Furthermore, unlike the narrator in the Japanese puppet theatre, he is visible. Unlike both, Hamlet seems to impose his story both on the players and on the audience. In this sense, his subjectivity intrudes on the illusion of objective representation. We know that many actors being famous for such or such a role become confused with the character they once represented. On stage, as on the screen, the actor's self is absent to make present the character's self. This absence secures the illusion of identification between the character and the actor. This identification is not a one–way process. Indeed, as the actor acquires the name, the words and the acts of the character, s/he gives him/her his/her physical features (appearance, voice, etc.). This applies also to theatrical props and other theatrical devices. Narration, on the contrary, does not provide for such illusions. Oral narration, nevertheless, retains a certain amount of theatricality. Yet, unlike theater, it relies not on the illusion of presence, but on the illusion of continuity. The Ghost of Hamlet is a case in point. He needs the theatrical art of assuming not to reproduce presence but to reproduce continuity. The scandal is in that the prohibition is simultaneously universal and thus natural, while also at the same time as "a system of norms and interdicts" (283): it is cultural. The contradiction encountered by Levi–Strauss is that the difference established in the nature/culture binary opposition is erased or at least questioned. • 23. Analysis Of Fun Home By Alison Bechdel Alison Bechdel, a literary and queer theorist herself who would go on to coin the Bechdel test, grew up in close proximity to theory. In a family of academics, with her teacher father and former actress mother, Bechdel was always surrounded by literature, so when it comes to self discovery of her sexuality, it's no surprise that she turns to the literary realm, from Rubyfruit Jungle to the Oxford English Dictionary, to understand herself. Bechdel's first graphic memoir, Fun Home, examines her upbringing in a funeral home with her cold mother and her closeted bisexual father, who commits suicide soon after Bechdel leaves for college. It engages in frequent literary and theory illusions, beginning from the mention of Icarian Games on the very first page. While Bechdel's work seems like it could be easily situated in structuralist theory, the work easily lends itself to a multiplicity of meanings, an inherent feature of deconstruction work that allows readers to veer into feminist theory, queer theory, or even Marxist theory. Just as Bechdel rewrites and reframes the events of her formative years multiple times throughout the novel, the novel particularly lends itself to structuralist, deconstruction, queer, and feminist theory, which all lead to particularly illuminating readings that compliment each other. Fun Home perhaps most glaringly fits into the literary theory of structuralism, and its application becomes easy as soon Bechdel introduces the readers to her father's constant rebuilding of their home on page 5. One of structuralism's main tenants is understanding the world as discursively constructed, meaning that there is no inherent essence or nature that informs one's production, whether that be behavior or presentation or style, and that one then understands the world through binary opposition and discourse (Parker 77–81). Bechdel's father produces a perfected period piece facade for the Bechdel home, which simultaneously indulged his obsessive love for home decor, an interest usually only allowed for homosexual men, while providing the facade of an idealized happy homeplace. • 27. The Nature Of Freedom By Jacques Derrida In The Politics of Friendship, Jacques Derrida boldly declares: "no deconstruction without democracy, no democracy without deconstruction." Accordingly, this democracy to come could not exist without some semblance of freedom. This deconstructive form of freedom is certainly not an individual freedom to do as one pleases, nor is it simply freedom from constraint. The freedom which constitutes deconstruction is aporetic in nature, thus making it difficult (or rather impossible) to give a straightforward definition. However, this lack of a definition for freedom is not a problem for Derrida. In fact, the undefinable nature of freedom is the condition for its existence. If a full definition of freedom were to be given, its ability to thrive would be crushed. However, this does not mean that discussions regarding the nature of freedom are without meaning. In discussing what freedom could be, what freedom could mean, one can better understand how to maximize freedom in both societies and our individual lives. To recognize the tension that lies within the word freedom is to better understand what its existence could actually entail. During an interview in 2001, Derrida stated the following regarding his suspicion towards "Freedom": "In my opinion, the most "free" thought is one that is constantly coming to terms with the effects of the machine. He is so much possessed with the metaphor of tiger that while composing a poem, it seems to him that a tiger sleeps "Silently between lines" (Mohanty – 91). Later in the twentieth century theorist Raymond Bauer developed The Obstinate Audience. In the early 1980's a theorist by the name of Stuart Hall challenged the traditional theories of an audience role in the media and developed his encoding/decoding theory. Each contributed to the current understanding of the active role audiences engage in when information is presented. In this section a brief description of the earlier theory of the audiences as passive viewers will be presented to provide a background of the role of the audience. Next, the major theorist and their contributions to the active audience theory will be presented. The section will end with a summary of active research theory and its contribution to communication medians today. Passive Audience Theory During the early 1900's audiences were considered to be passive, an audience that merely observed events rather than actively responding to the event in the media. During this time, several theories were developed on the media's ability to provide information to a group of people that did not think about the information just simply receive the information. The term surfaced in he world of design journalism in the mid–1980's, questioning the place of modern design in the theory of deconstruction. Derrida introduced the concept of 'deconstruction' in the 'Book of Grammatology,' published in France in 1967. In this theory, deconstruction questions how representation inhibiits reality. How does the surface get under the skin? In the Western fields of science, art, philosophy and literature, oppostions such as– Inside/outisde, reality/representation and mind/body are often used. Deconstructive Analysis: The Yellow Wall Paper Deconstructive Analysis: The Yellow Wall Paper Deconstruction or poststructuralist is a type of literary criticism that took its roots in the 1960's. Jacques Derrida gave birth to the theory when he set out to demonstrate that all language is associated with mental images that we produce due to previous experiences. This system of literary scrutiny interprets meaning as effects from variances between words rather than their indication to the things they represent. This philosophical theory strives to reveal subconscious inconsistencies in a composition by examining deeply beneath its apparent meaning. Derrida's theory teaches that texts are unstable and queries about the beliefs of words to embody reality. Deep–seated in these... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I meant to be such a help to John, such a real rest and comfort, and her I am a comparative burden already" (Barnet 747). Having read the text through to the end we know that she is in a mental hospital, a reader could most likely begin to imagine what John may have been thinking to have witnessed his wife go through such disturbing mental anguish and that he was only going off of the knowledge available at this point in time. How would the story be different if it had been written from John's point of view? The problem is that the woman does not give herself enough credit to speak up for herself. This is slightly comparable to what many people go through today, in our society, with medical practitioners. Although one knows what makes him or her feel better, we most often will rely on the doctor's advice, instead, simply because of his or her authority. The woman is trying so hard to get better, and deep down she knows what she needs to do, but she is constantly being shut down by her husband and her own personal insecurities. The woman describes writing as "Such a relief" (Barnet 748) but because of John's constant observation of her as well as her low energy level she must direct her thoughts elsewhere. Usually Native Americans harbored a great respect for the land they were allowed to use . • 35. Toni Cade Bambara's My Man Bovanne How did "My Man Bovanne" by Toni Cade Bambara explored the diverse kinds of love that affects the human experience. Bambara suggests that it is also possible to have a spiritual connection with another person based on nothing more than shared humanity, and not just sexual and familial love. She introduces this concept in "My Man Bovanne." Miss Hazel's family misinterprets her association with Bovanne as a sexual one, and her decision to bring him home at the end of the story seems to back up their view of her. However, she credibly suggests that her relationship with Bovanne is based on empathy, not sexual or romantic desire. She is not bringing him home from a wish for sex, but from a wish to take care of him. This idea of spiritual connection is based on empathy. Even though the narrator and Bovanne seem to have little in common besides their age, they can form a profound and meaningful connection because the narrator tries to comprehend what Bovine's life is like. She sees how others treat him, and pays attention to how these interactions affect him. The same conflict between the narrator and her children comes from the fact that her sons do not take time to ponder the feelings of their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 36. The Meaning Of A Hero : My Hero All people in the wolrd have heros. For every person it may be differnt however they all seem to come together since they all have great meaning. The meaning of what a hero is all means the same however, the differance is how people put it to action. In the dictionary hero means someone who is admired and/or is idealized for their courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. My hero is my aunt Michelle because she affects me in such a positive way because she is supportive, caring and insparational. My Aunt Michelle is very supportive of me in many ways. To start with, she takes me anywhere Iwant to go. She runs my friends and I to Dutch Brothers all the time when we ask. She also brings me Dutch at school if I'm very tired that day. If my friends and I ever want to drive anywhere or go to the mall, she will drive us. My aunt also drives us to the beach a lot on the weekends or to a hiking place. Other than the coffee runs and the places, she goes to any events I have. Michelle goes to any event I have for volleyball or dance. On the other hand, Michelle is the one that also goes to all my high school events. She goes to anything AVID related and anything the school holds and haves. Lastly, Michelle just helps me over all in anything I need. The biggest thing she helps with is my stress level because I have very bad Gillett 2 stress and I am very often stressed, so she makes sure to help in anyway she can. Besides my stress, she helps me with my homework whenever I need it, even if she doesn't understand what the questions are she pushes through and does the best she can when my dad can't help. That is why my aunt is very supportive to me and is my hero. Michelle is also very caring to my older sister and me. She is always there to take care of me when I'm sick. She goes to get me soup and a water because it makes me happy when I'm sick. Also she will check on me constant to make sure if I was needing anything she would get it for me. Other than when I am sick, she also watches what I do to make sure I'm okay. In this paper I will define the Semiotics, Semiology and Difference then I will give the views and beliefs of the three of the masterminds behind these terms. Firstly, Semiology and Semiotics are two related disciplines, which study semiotics, the relation of significance involving signs, object and mind, and classification of signs. Semiotics is a synonym for Semiology. Semiotics is defined as the study of signs and symbols and their interpretation, while Semiology is semiotics, the study of signs. According to Swiss Linguist and Semiotician Ferdinand de Saussure semiotics is the science of signs. Saussure in Course in General Linguistics, said "the roles of signs are part of our social life". For him, sign has two parts, the signifier and the signified. The signifier is the physical form of the sign. It is one of the biggest days for our country so yes young people will take inerst in it. 18 isnt a magical number its just an age, why can't 16 or 17 year olds vote? They should have a say on who is leading the country, who is passing our bills, who will make decisions for our country.Yes maybe only 34% of young american's voted in 2012 but thats because there was no drive for voting. Let's say that you were able to vote at 16, all of your friend's would get together and decide who there voting for, and you would most likely go vote with them. With the youth now there all conected to each other so thus means a larger amount would vote. So to say that "The 16 – 18 age group would be even less involed" is totally false. If they were able to vote it would make them feel like there actually doing something for this country they call home. For instance, Mrs.Gibbs is the mother figure in this play that we all wish we had or reminds us of our own warm and kind mothers. She is one of the characters that helps spur the play's main theme: Mortality. The 3 acts of "Our Town" show her transition of being full of emotions & passion to being impassioned and numb. Later at the wedding, Mrs. Gibbs keeps George in check and tells him that he wants this and he needs to man up. She also tells him that he is just afraid. This scene is not only important because she pushes through George's fears but because this is the last time we see her alive. Nine years have passed in the town Grover's Corners ,and most of the people that were introduced previously are dead. In this act Mrs.Gibbs doesn't have a specific role other than to act as a somewhat mother figure for Emily(who recently died from childbirth) and to demonstrate how death can change your perspective. Her motherly status is now cold and stoic instead of the warm personality she had in previous acts. She is one of the first people to tell Emily that being dead is now her life and that she shouldn't go back. However, when Emily is going to back anyway, Mrs.Gibbs tells her to pick an unimportant day in her life. When Emily gets back from the day Mrs.Gibbs tells Emily an equivalent to an"I told you so". A new and different interpretation of the deconstructed sexual axiom in Vietnam allows white and black GIs to pursue sexual consolation indirectly with each other, where they otherwise would not pursue it in America. The new and different interpretations of the racial and sexual binaries also expose the primary violence that creates binaries and accommodates the human desire for transcendence. Not only does "Tu Do Street['s]" narrator employ the Vietnamese prostitutes to expose the nebulous distinction between racial and sexual binary oppositions, he employs them to expose the nebulous distinction between lover and enemy, as well. He asserts that the Vietnamese prostitutes do not distinguish between lovers and enemies: "we fought / the brothers of these women / we now run to hold in our arms" (24–26). The narrator refuses to identify the prostitutes and their brothers as North or South Vietnamese, prompting at least two interpretations of these lines. First, America officially identifies the communist North Vietnamese as enemies. This American lover/North Vietnamese enemy binary stabilizes America's participation in the war by assigning a natural origin to the hostilities. It sanctions America's participation, by divine mandate, to liberate South Vietnam from Communism. If the brothers are North Vietnamese enemies, the prostitutes' sexual consolation of American lovers appears irrational, and through their consolation, the Vietnamese prostitutes forge a strange nexus between the American lovers and its official enemies. Once again, the prostitutes create a triad from a binary. The triad delimits the binary opposition and deconstructs its implicit lover (American–essential–human)/enemy (North ...
