3. he was the first of
the eight children
of Don Giuseppe
de' Liguori and
Anna Maria
Caterina
Cavalieri, of
the marquises
of Avernia,
originally from
the Brindisi area.
4. His father, a
noble knight of
the seat of
Portanova, as
well as a senior
officer in the
navy, entrusted
him, from an
early age, to
high-ranking
tutors, including
the painter
Francesco
Solimena
5. At the age of only 12 he enrolled at
the University of Naples and, four
years later, in 1713 he obtained his
doctorate (civil and canon law after
having taken an exam with the
great philosopher and historian
Giambattista Vico), starting to
practice as a lawyer at the age of 16.
6. In 1718 he obtained the appointment as judge of the "Regio
portulano" of Naples. He attended the Confraternity of
Doctors at the church of the Girolamini dei Filippini and took
on the task of visiting the sick in the largest hospital in Naples.
7. A severe defeat in his professional career as a lawyer in 1723 matured his firm
decision to consecrate himself to God which saw the opposition of his father who
wanted him to marry a distant relative. He was ordained a priest on December 17,
1726, at the age of 30 and, as a result of a compromise with his father, always
contrary to his choice, he was unable to enter the congregation of the oratory of
Saint Philip Neri, becoming a diocesan priest with residence in paternal home.
8. He summoned the
humblest faithful to
whom he explained the
Gospel in simple ways
in front of the church
of Santa Teresa degli
Scalzi. The meetings were
initially obstructed by
the civil and religious
authorities but, thanks to
the stubbornness of the
priest and the faithful,
they were approved by
Cardinal Francesco
Maria Pignatelli.
9. Following the earthquake of 1731 which had hit the city of Foggia and which was
causing the faithful to leave the Church, he went a few years later to Capitanata.
10. while he was preaching in the church of San Giovanni
Battista he was enveloped in a beam of light and was seen
levitating from the ground in front of all the gathered crowd
11. In 1732, at the age of 36,
he left Naples definitively,
retiring again to Scala
(in the province of Salerno)
where he founded the
congregation of the
Most Holy Redeemer,
12. then at the
Benedictine
hermitage of
Villa degli
Schiavi
in Liberi
(province of
Caserta and
diocese of
Caiazzo)
in 1734 he
opened their
first house.
13. The life of the new congregation was troubled, following the various prohibitions
applied to religious orders and Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori made use of his own
legal experience, choosing the formula of the religious congregation, legal in the
Kingdom of Naples. The congregation was approved in 1749 by Pope Benedict XIV.
14. Alphonsus dedicated himself to drafting
numerous ascetic, dogmatic, moral
and apologetic works, including
the Theologia moralis 1753-1755 and
“The practice of the confessor” 1755.
15. He was also the composer of many songs in Italian and Neapolitan,
including the famous Christmas carol Tu scendi dalle stelle,
16. In 1762 Pope Clement XIII wanted him bishop of
the diocese of Saint Agatha of the Goths against his will.
17. During the terrible famine that hit the Kingdom of Naples
in January 1764, Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori managed
to limit the suffering of the population of his territory
18. He worked hard,
together with the local
governors, the priests
of the city and of the
diocese, to take out
mortgages and control
the price of the bread
that soared, and
he relaunched the
economy which had
been stalled for
almost two years.
19. In 1775 he left
the episcopal
office due to
health problems:
in fact he
suffered from a
form of arthritis
which curved
his spine.
20. while bishop,
in 1774, he
bilocated to
Rome to assist
Pope Clement
XIV who was
dying and
attended his
funeral.
21. Due to his poor health he
spent many months of the
year in the Bishop's Palace of
Arienzo residing outside the
episcopal city of S. Agata but
in the territory of his diocese
22. Between 1770 and 1776 he tried
several times to establish a mission
in the territory of Martina Franca
and wrote a short text in response
to some theses of Abbot Magli of
Martina, Declaration of the system
around the rule of moral actions,
which was later integrated in
the work Theologia Moralis.
23. He moved to the house of the Redemptorists
in Nocera dei Pagani... where he remained
until his death on August 1, 1787. Today he
rests in an urn inside the papal basilica
of Pagani named after him.
24. He was beatified on
September 15, 1816
by Pope Pius VII –
and canonized on May 26,
1839 by Pope Gregory XVI.
Pope Pius IX proclaimed
him a Doctor of the Church
in 1871 just 84 years after
his death, while Pope Pius
XII in 1950 conferred on
him the title of "Heavenly
Patron of all confessors
and moralists".
25. Saint Alphonsus was the author of over
100 works, both "popular", easily accessible
to all, and exegetical, concerning
theology(especially the moral one),
apologetics, dogmatics and ascetics.
-To date it is estimated that the works of
Saint Alphonsus have been translated into
more than 70 languages, and that
-they have had 21,000 editions.

Holy Redeemer is present in 79
countries, and is formed for
moreof 5,000 members.
27. In the world, the Redemptorist Missionaries
arethose responsible for the propagation of
the devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
-The original Icon of the Virgin Mary with the
Child Jesus in her arm arose over the
centuries13 to 17, on the island of Crete,
in Greece, and since 1866, it has been moved to
the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer and of
Santo Alfonso, in via Merulana, in the center
of Rome, where the headquarters of the
Redemptorists are located in the world.
28. The mission of the
Redemptorists is the
prayer of the Gospel
to the poor, seeking
regions of
abandoned pastoral
and social
populations, for this,
through missions,
spiritual retreats,
pastoral care in
shrines and parishes,
and also through
the means of
communication,
the message of the
Copiosa Redemption.
29. missionaries arose who became
Saints - again for the Catholic Church.
– St. Geraldo Magela, St. Clement Hofbauer
and St. John Neumann, as well as
St. Alphonsus, the founder. There are still a
large number of Blesseds, Martyrs and others
who have received the status of Venerables
and Servants of God and await miracles
for beatification or canonization.
