2. VISIT TO SLOVAKIA
Sunday 12-9-2021
15:30 Official welcome at the Bratislava
International Airport
16:30 Ecumenical meeting at the Apostolic
Nunciature in Bratislava
17:30 Private meeting with the members
of the Society of Jesus at the Apostolic
Nunciature in Bratislava
6. The freedom of the brother and sister is also our freedom,
because our freedom is not complete without him and her.
7. holy brothers of Thessalonica, Cyril and Methodius
It is difficult to demand a Europe more fertilized by the Gospel if we
do not bother about the fact that we are not yet fully united with
each other on the continent, and about caring for one another.
8. to strive for a reconciliation of diversities in the Holy Spirit; for a unity that,
without being uniform, is a sign and witness to the freedom of Christ, the Lord
who unties the bonds of the past and heals us from fears and shyness.
9. the pope referred to
Dostoevsky's novel –
The Grand Inquisitor
"You want to go into the world
and you go there empty-
handed, with the promise of a
freedom that they, in their
simplicity and in their innate
disorder, cannot even conceive,
of which they are afraid and
terrified, because nothing has
ever been more intolerable of
freedom for man! "
(The Karamazov Brothers,
Milan 2012, p. 338).
And he adds to this that men
are to willing to trade their
freedom for a more comforta-
ble slavery, that of subjecting
themselves to someone who
decides for them, in order to
have bread and securities.
10. Contemplation ... - goes beyond philosophical and even theological
conceptualizations, starting from an experiential faith, which knows how to
welcome the mystery .... the ecclesial West thirsts for it, to rediscover the beauty
of the adoration of God and the importance of not conceiving the community
of faith primarily on the basis of programmatic and functional efficiency.
11. The Pope referred
to the Slovak poet
Mor Ho
"When the foreign
hand knocks on our
door with sincere
trust: whoever it is,
whether it comes from
near or far, day or
night, it will be on our
table the gift of God
waiting for him "
(Samo Chalupka,
Mor ho !, 1864).
12. Action. Unity is not achieved just with good intentions and
adherence to some common value, but by doing something
together for those who bring us closest to the Lord
13. Since we are
not yet able
to share
the same
Eucharistic
table, we
can host
Jesus
together by
serving him
in the poor.
14. 17:30 Private meeting with the members of the Society
of Jesus at the Apostolic Nunciature in Bratislava

18.
19. 10:00 Meeting with the Authorities, Civil Society and the Diplomatic
Corps in the garden of the Presidential Palace in Bratislava
20. I express my gratitude to President Zuzana Čaputová I came
as a pilgrim to a young country but with an ancient history,
in a land with deep roots located in the heart of Europe.
21. This is what the large blue stripe of your flag suggests,
it symbolizes brotherhood with the Slavic peoples. ...
This country reaffirms its message of integration and peace,
and Europe is renowned for solidarity which, crosses over
borders, and can bring it back to the center of history.
22. the Slavic welcome, which offers visitors bread and salt. - Bread, which
by breaking evokes fragility, invites us in particular to take care of the
weakest. - Bread broken and shared equally recalls the importance of
justice, of giving everyone the opportunity to fulfill themselves. - daily
bread - The bread of each day is work, which takes up most of the day
23. "You are the salt of the earth" (Mt 5:13). - the taste of solidarity is needed.
And just as salt gives flavor only by melting, so society regains taste
through the free generosity of those who spend themselves on others.
24. In these lands, until a few decades ago, a single thought precluded
freedom; today another single thought empties it of meaning, tracing
progress back to gain and rights to individualistic needs alone.
Today, as then, the salt of faith is not an answer according to the world, it does not lie in
the ardor of waging cultural wars, but in the gentle and patient sowing of the Kingdom of
God, first of all with the witness of charity, of love. Your Constitution mentions desire
to build the country on the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius, patrons of Europe.
25. Saints Cyril and Methodius
they also showed that preserving
the good does not mean
repeating the past, but opening
up to the new without uprooting
oneself. Your history includes
many writers, poets and men of
culture who have been the salt of
the country. And as salt burns on
wounds, so their lives have often
passed through the crucible of
suffering. How many illustrious
personalities have been locked
up in prison, though interiorly
free and offered shining
examples of courage, consistency
and resistance to injustice!
And above all of forgiveness.
This is the salt of your land.
26. Cultivate this beauty, the beauty of the whole. This requires
patience, this requires effort, this requires courage and
sharing, this requires momentum and creativity.
27. 10:45 Meeting with the Bishops, Priests, Religious, Seminarians
and Catechists at the Cathedral of St. Martin in Bratislava
28. we need a Church that walks together, that walks
the roads of life with the torch of the Gospel lit.
29. Let's get out of the excessive concern for ourselves, for our structures, for how society
looks at us ... ... Let's immerse ourselves instead in real life, the real life of the people
and ask ourselves: what are the spiritual needs and expectations of our people?
30. ! Freedom is always a journey, sometimes tiring, to be continually renewed, to
fight for it every day. ... Freedom calls in the first person to be responsible for
one's own choices, to discern, to carry out the processes of life - - And today
many times we do the things that the media decide for us. And freedom is lost.
31. In the spiritual and ecclesial life there is the temptation to seek a false peace
that leaves us calm, instead of the fire of the Gospel that disturbs us, that
transforms us. Many others - especially in the new generations - are not
attracted by a proposal of faith that does not leave them inner freedom, they
are not attracted to a Church in which we must all think alike and obey blindly.
32. the Church of Christ does not want to dominate consciences and
occupy spaces, it wants to be a "fountain" of hope in people's lives.
33. Creativity - Cyril and Methodius ... invented a new alphabet for
the translation of the Bible, liturgical texts and Christian doctrine.
34. Dialogue - a Church that knows how to dialogue with the world, with those
who confess Christ without being "one of us", with those who experience
the strain of a religious quest, even with those who do not believe. - It is a
Church that, following the example of Cyril and Methodius, unites and
holds together East and West, different traditions and sensibilities
35. Cardinal Korec. He was a Jesuit Cardinal, persecuted by the regime,
imprisoned, forced to work hard until he fell ill. When he came to
Rome for the Jubilee of 2000, he went to the catacombs and lit
a candle for his persecutors, invoking them for mercy.
36. 16:00 Private visit to
the “Bethlehem Center”
in Bratislava
(run by the Missionaries of Charity
of Saint Teresa of Calcutta)
37.
38. And the Lord is with us too: when we are
together, so happy, the Lord is with us
39. 16:45 Meeting with the Jewish community
in Rybné námestie Square in Bratislava
40. It is written: "You will not take the name of the Lord in vain"
(Ex 20,7). The divine name, that is, his own personal reality,
is named in vain when the unique and unrepeatable
dignity of man, created in his image, is violated.
41. how many times the ineffable name of the Most High has been used
for unspeakable acts of inhumanity! How many oppressors have
declared: "God is with us"; but it was they who were not with God.
42. today there is no lack of vain and false idols that dishonor the name of the Most
High. They are those of power and money that prevail over the dignity of man,
of indifference that turns his gaze the other way, of manipulations that exploit
religion, making it a matter of supremacy or reducing it to irrelevance.
43. "In you all the families of the earth will be blessed" (Gen 12,3).
44. “The light of hope shines. Here every year you come to ignite
the first light on the Chanukia candlestick. Thus, in the
darkness, the message appears that they are not destruction
and death to have the last word, but renewal and life ".
