1. APOSTOLIC TRIP OF POPE FRANCIS TO MARSEILLE
for the conclusions of the Mediterranean Meetings
[22 - 23 SETTEMBER 2023]

2. welcome at Marseille airport

3. I thank Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline for his words of welcome and I greet H.E.
Mgr Éric de Moulins-Beaufort, the brother bishops, the Rector Fathers and
all of you, priests, deacons and seminarians, consecrated persons, who
work in this archdiocese with generosity and dedication to build
a civilization of encounter with God and with neighbor

4. Notre Dame de la Garde - It is the holy, faithful people of God who –
(I use the word) – “anointed” this sanctuary, this place of prayer.

5. God's style is one of closeness, compassion and tenderness – of making
our own “the patient and encouraging kindness of the Good Shepherd
who does not scold the lost sheep, but places the burden on his
shoulders and celebrates his return to the sheepfold (cf. Lc 15, 4-7)

6. You will faithfully echo them, as intercessors, as “angels on earth”,
messengers who place everything “before the glory of God” (Tb 12:12).

7. Mary, we carry the blessing and peace of Jesus
everywhere, in all families and in all hearts.

8. first comes the look of mercy of the Virgin,
this is the look of intercession

9. by a humble, joyful life rich in apostolic zeal, may so
many missionaries who have left this high place, help us to
announce the good news of Jesus Christ to the whole world.

10. MOMENT OF COLLECTION WITH RELIGIOUS LEADERS AT THE MEMORIAL
DEDICATED TO SAILORS AND MIGRANTS MISSING AT SEA

11. Dear friends, we are also at a crossroads: on the one hand fraternity, which
enriches the human community with goodness; on the other, indifference, which
is staining the Mediterranean with blood. We are at a crossroads of civilizations.
Either the culture of humanity and fraternity, or the culture of indifference

12. At the roots of the three Mediterranean
monotheisms therefore lies hospitality,
love of the stranger in the name of God.

13. “Let no one harbor feelings of hatred for his
neighbor in his heart, but of love, for he who hates
even one man will not be able to remain peaceful
before God. God does not hear his prayer
as long as he keeps anger in his heart”
(S. Caesarius of Arles, Discourse, XIV, 2).

14. Marseille is a model of integration. It is beautiful that here, with various groups that
work with migrants, there is Marseille-Espérance, an example of interreligious
dialogue that promotes fraternity and peaceful coexistence - Jules Isaac

to rebuild this house to continue together to fight
idols, to tear down walls, to build bridges and to

17. 1. The Sea. - It has spread throughout the world the high value of the
human being, endowed with freedom, open to the truth and in search of
salvation, who sees the world as a marvel to be discovered and a garden
to inhabit, under the sign of a God who makes an alliance with men.

18. Its’ “five shores” on which you have reflected: North Africa,
the Middle East, the Black-Aegean Sea, the Balkans and Latin Europe.

19. where there is material, educational, professional, cultural, and religious poverty, there
is the ground for mafias and illicit trafficking. The commitment of institutions alone is
not enough. We need a burst of conscience to say "no" to illegality and "yes" to solidarity,
which is not merely a drop in the ocean, but an essential element for purifying the waters.

20. And I think of so many Christians, often forced to leave their land or live in exile
without their rights being recognized, without their enjoying full citizenship.

21. 2. The port of Marseille has for centuries been a wide-open gateway to
the sea, to France and to Europe. - and which should be managed with
wise foresight, with European responsibility,
capable of confronting objective difficulties

22. the Mediterranean is a reflection of the world: the South which
looks towards the North, with many developing countries, prey
to instability, regimes, wars and desertification, which look down
on the wealthiest, in a globalized world, where we are all
connected but where the divisions have never been so deep

23. Pope Montini listed “three duties”
of the most developed nations,
“rooted in human and
supernatural fraternity”

24. “duty of solidarity, that is to say the aid that
rich nations must provide to developing countries;

25. duty of social justice, that is to say the rectification of defective
commercial relations between strong and weak peoples;

26. duty of universal charity, that is to say the promotion of a more
human world for all, where all will have to give and receive, without
the progress of some becoming an obstacle to the development of others”

of all the emigrants and
pilgrims of all times and
all countries, of all the
refugees of any condition
who, driven by persecution

28. Migrants must be welcomed, protected or accompanied,
promoted and integrated.

29. We need fraternity just like we need bread

30. Marseille is also a “gate of faith”. According to
tradition, the saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus
landed here, and sowed the Gospel on these lands

31. the Church finds the safe port in which to dock and from
which to leave to forge links with people of all races,
seeking everywhere the traces of the Spirit and offering
what she has received by grace - Saint Charles de Foucauld

32. Bernanos - "the Church of the saints", added that "all this great apparatus of
wisdom, of strength, of supple discipline, of magnificence and of majesty is nothing
of itself, if charity does not animate it" (Joan of Arc relapse and saint, Paris 1994, p. 74).

of Arles said:
“If you have
charity, you have
God; and if
you have God,
what else could
you need?»

34. Pascal recognized that “the sole object
of Scripture is charity” (Pensées, n. 301)

35. Saint John Cassian,
who died here,
wrote that
“everything, even
what we consider
useful and
necessary, is worth
less than the good
that is peace
and charity”
(Spiritual Conferences XVI, 6).

36. Saint Paul, the Apostle of the nations who spent a good part of his life crossing
the Mediterranean from one port to another, taught that to fulfill the law of Christ,
we must mutually bear the weight of one another (cf . Ga 6, 2)

38. Where to start building links between cultures, if not through
university? There, young people are not fascinated by the
seductions of power, but by the dream of building the future.

39. May Mediterranean universities be laboratories of dreams and
projects for the future, where young people grow up by meeting
each other, knowing each other and discovering cultures
and contexts that are both close and different.

40. Go forward, be brave! Be a sea of good, to face
today's poverty with synergy of solidarity; be a
welcoming port, to embrace those who seek a
better future; be a beacon of peace, to
annihilate, with a culture of encounter,
the dark abysses and violence and war.

42. Mary is the Mother who goes up to the mountains of Judah to tell us that God is
on his way towards us, to find us with love and make us exult with joy.

43. With God even the impossible becomes possible,
He generates life, even in sterility

44. The experience of faith provokes a thrill in the face of life.
To tremble is to be “touched inside”, and to feel an inner quiver,
to feel that something is moving in our heart.

45. He who is born to faith, on the other hand, recognizes the presence of
the Lord, like the child in Elizabeth's womb. He recognizes God’s work
in the course of the day and he receives a new perspective on reality.

46. Even in the midst of difficulties,
problems and suffering, he perceives
God's visit daily and feels accompanied
and supported by Him.

47. Faced with the mystery of one’s own life and the challenges of society,
whoever believes, experiences a thrill, a passion, a dream to cultivate,
an interest that pushes one to become personally involved

48. The experience of faith, in addition to a thrill before life,
also causes a thrill before one’s neighbor.

49. Our metropolitan cities, and so many European countries like France
where different cultures and religions coexist, are in this sense a great
challenge against the exacerbations of individualism, against the
selfishness and closures which produce solitude and suffering.

51. France, Europe need this: the grace of a thrill, a new thrill of faith,
charity and hope. We need to rediscover passion and enthusiasm,
to rediscover the taste for commitment to fraternity
