This document summarizes the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego in 1531 in Mexico. It describes the 5 appearances of the Virgin to Juan Diego on Tepeyac hill where she asked that a temple be built in her honor. During the 4th appearance, she provided Juan Diego with signs to convince the bishop - roses in winter and her image imprinted on his tilma. This led to the construction of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which became a center of Catholic devotion in Mexico and beyond. Mary is seen as a mother who protects her people like the apple of her eye.
2. 1st appearance
In 1531, while Juan
Diego was passing
from his town going to
the town of Mexico for
his catechetical class
and listening to Holy
Mass, on the hill of
Tepeyac on the
outskirts of Mexico
City, he had an
exceptional
experience.
3. He heard enchanting music, he smelt a delicious perfume,
he saw a splendid light, and in the light a maiden
of super-human beauty spoke to him.
4. “Juan Diego, my son,
whom I truly love like a son,
-where are you going?
The virgin gave him a command;
“I wish that a temple be built in
this place, from which, like a
Mother, full of compassion for
you and your fellow men, I will
show my sweet mercy to the
indigenous people and to those
who love and seek me.
From here I will hear the pleas
and laments of all those who ask
me for their protection and invoke
me in their tribulations and
afflictions.From here I will
console youand I will help you. "
5. She sent him to the
Bishop Don Zumarraga.
Juan Diego made the trip,
and after a long wait he
managed to talk to the
bishop. He said that he
had met a lady who sent
him with this message.
The bishop heard him out
but didn't believe him.
He asked who was this
lady who was sending
him with messages
and then sent Juan
Diego on his way.
6. 2nd appearance
When he arrived at
Tepeyac, the Virgin
met him again.
He reported what the
bishop had answered,
and the Virgin Mary
sent him again.
But Juan Diego made
excuses. He thought that
someone more educated
could talk to the bishop
and fulfill the
errand better.
7. Mary answered him;
“Listen, my dearest son, you must
know that I have no shortage of
servants whom I can send,
because I have many whom I
could send if I wanted and they
would do what I commanded
them, but it is convenient that
you take charge of this mission
and carry it out. It is through you
that my wish and will must be
fulfilled. I ask you, then, my son,
and I order you to return
tomorrow to the bishop.
You will tell him to build me
the temple that I ask of him
and that the one that sends you
is the Mother of the true God."
.
8. Juan returned to the bishop and reported that
it was the Blessed Virgin who had sent him.
The bishop was respectful of this simple Indian,
but incredulous. He asked for a sign from
the Lady in order to fulfill her errands.
He sent Juan Diego away again and sent two
spies after him, but when Juan crossed the
bridge, he disappeared from the spies' sight.
9. 3rd appearance
Juan Diego faithfully
reported to the Virgin what
the Bishop said. The Virgin
asked him to return the next
day and she would give him
the sign that he requested.
10. But the next day, Juan went to his uncle's
house, who was in very poor health.
When he saw that he was dying, he went to
call the priest. He was thinking of going
around the hill of Tepeyac, because he did
not want to be delayed by the Virgin.
11. 4th appearance
Mary met him and asked where he
was going? He told her the truth;
that he was going for the priest
for her uncle who was dying.
12. Mary answered him;
Listen, my son, what I am
telling you now; let nothing
trouble you or afflict you.
Do not fear sickness or
any other painful accident,
nor any pain!-
Am I not your mother?
Are you not under my protection !
Are you not in my kingdom
and did you not
abandon yourself to me?
Do you need more proof?
Am I not life and health?
Are you not on my breast and
don’t I take care of you?
Don't worry about your uncle's
illness , for he will not die from it.
Be assured that he
has already healed “.
Do you need anything else?
13. After saying this she sent him up the hill to collect roses in his poncho
or tilma. Juan Diego knew it was winter (so there shouldn’t have been
any roses) but he diligently obeyed the mandate of Our Lady. Although
it was winter there were large and beautiful roses in abundance.
14. He picked them up and
carried them on his tilma to
the Virgin who arranged
them on his poncho.
She ordered him not
to show them to anyone
but only the Bishop
15. He did not open his tilma until he was in the presence of the bishop. He dropped the
flowers in front of Fray Zumarraga, and there was the imprint of the Virgin of
Guadalupe on the cloth. The bishop knelt before the virgin, and all who were
with him. This was the sign of authenticity of Juan Diego's mission.
16. Fray Zumarraga took
the image of the tilma to
his private chapel and
detained Juan Diego
with him that night.
The next morning he went
with him to the site of the
apparitions and where the
Virgin asked that the temple
be built. Then he sent two
servants to accompany him
to where his uncle, Juan
Bernardino was, to see if
he had been cured as
predicted by the Lady
17. 5th appearance
His uncle was cured
and said that he had
been visited by the
same Lady that Juan
Diego described, and
after she had healed
him she asked that
a temple be built
in that site of Tepeyac
18. Devotion
Soon the word spread
about the miracle and so
many faithful came to
venerate the sacred image
that the bishop transferred
it to the main church.
In the procession with
great pomp and ceremony,
an archer shot an arrow
that unfortunately fell on a
native, and it penetrated
his heart. He died
immediately, but they took
him to touch the image of
the Virgin and he was
resurrected.
20. One of the
greatest
miracles has
been the spread
of the faith
among the
indigenous
people and the
preservation
of the faith
of the Mexican
people despite
years of harsh
persecution
against their
religion.
