Columbine Shooting By Dave Cullen
On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold carried out an attack on Columbine High School
in Littleton, Colorado. They fired guns towards students, killing thirteen people and injuring more
than twenty. Afterwards, they turned the guns on themselves. In 'Columbine', Dave Cullen analyses
how and why Eric and Dylan massacred those people. When viewed in hindsight, events such as this
are inspected to every minute detail; there are always ways to change the outcome. In the event of
Columbine, there are many points in time at which the outcome could be changed completely with a
single action; the points with the most significant potential are those which involve police
investigations, close friends of the killers, and the time during ... Show more content on

The day of the attack, however, he went off campus to eat at subway (44). It was a calm day with
nice weather, so he likely felt at ease, without a need to patrol around the school. However, it was at
this time that Eric and Dylan opened fire on Columbine. Gardner's response time was delayed
because he was not on campus to hear the first shots, and therefore did not see Eric and Dylan walk
into the school. Around 11:23, 4 minutes after the shooting started, Gardner pulled up to the school.
(49). Gardner tried to locate where the shooting and explosions were coming from, almost as
confused as some of the students. As Gardner stepped out of his car, Eric spotted the patrol lights
and fired 10 shots at him. Gardner took cover behind the car, uninjured. He fired 4 shots at Eric with
his pistol, missing all 4. Eric fired a few more shots, and pushed back into the school (51).
Following protocol, Gardner did not follow Eric inside the school. As Eric reappeared in the west
exit doorway, Gardner opened fire, as well as Deputy Paul Smoker; Eric was not hit. Eric retreated
back inside the building (55). Dylan had no indication of a contingency (45). This implies that he
may have not proceeded with the rest of the shooting if Eric had been shot down. Dylan was more
depressed that homicidal; he probably would have committed suicide instead of going on to shoot
more students, if given the chance. Additionally, it is possible that he felt threatened by Eric to go
through with the shooting; if that influence was taken away, the event may not have

Columbine Shooting Theory
The Columbine Massacre that occurred on April 20th, 1999 is one of the biggest shocks to hit the
United States at that time. It was centered around two lonely and depressed high school boys, Eric
Harris and Dylan Klebold, who had a highly–detailed plan on attending school with explosives and
firearms. The perpetrators murdered 12 students and a teacher during the attack along with injuring
21 additional people. The first victim who had their life taken was 17–year–old Rachel Scott who
took shots in the head and in the torso when the two gunmen entered the school. "Scott was an
energetic, sociable girl, who displayed concern for the well–being of others (About)." Eric and
Dylan ended the attack by committing suicide. Rachel had received a journal ... Show more content

These boys did not make it all the way to high school with the intention to cause harm. There were
many links between them, such as: bullying, depression, video games, social climate, gothic
subculture, and music. The link between school violence and bullying has increased in attraction
exponentially after the Columbine shooting. "The shooters were classified as gifted children who
had allegedly been victims of bullying for four years." Many of those who are close to them
regarded them as "the losers of the losers (Ball)". Klebold has also made remarks to his father about
his hatred toward the jock culture in his high school. He added that Harris had been victimized by
the jocks by stating to his father "They sure give Eric hell." There is no doubt this helped drive them
to the decision they made. Before the shooting, Harris was scheduled a meeting with his appointed
psychiatrist and had complained of depression, anger, and suicidal thoughts so he was prescribed
with the antidepressant

Columbine Shooting With technology advancing everyday, we are able to get the most recent and
breaking news at the tip of our fingertips daily. We can get news on how the elections are advancing,
the most recent terrorist attack, really anything. The media is always first to report on an incident
and whether it is on our phones or televisions, we are always aware on what is going on in the
world. An event that really grabs the medias attention are mass shootings that occur at schools. The
most recent ones have been Sandy Hook and Oregon's Umpqua Community College, and though
those both had many victims and were traumatic, they are only examples of the most deadly school
massacres. Sadly, there have been many school shootings but one of the more famous ones in
American history is the Columbine shooting. Dylan Klebold, who was 17 years old and Eric Harris,
who was 18, conducted the shootings. The shooting occurred on April 20th, 1999 in Littleton,
Colorado at Columbine High School. Dylan Klebold was born on September 11th, 1981. He had a
brother who was three years older and like many boys, was involved with boy scouts and part of a
little league team. His parents told investigators that he was a gentle boy and never gave any
indications that he would be violent growing up. While attending elementary school, he was part of
the gifted and talented program for children and was involved

One of the nation's most fatal shootings. The Columbine Massacre "ranked as one of the worst mass
shootings in U.S history as well as one of the deadliest episodes of school violence (Library, par.

remains a mystery as to why Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went on a murderous rampage on that
despicable day but the truth remains. The Columbine Massacre was and still is a day many will
never forget.

Introduction: April 20, 1999, is a day of remembrance for many people. The Columbine massacre
had an effect not only on the Littleton, Colorado community but also on the entire country. In the
book Columbine by Dave Cullen, the author tells the story of the tragedy that started with Eric
Harris and Dylan Klebold. The book begins with an introduction into both Eric and Dylan's
thoughts, actions, and reasoning behind their plan to attack their high school. Throughout the book
the author points out how the media gave a different view for the motives of the attack which caused
false accusations towards the killers. This book tells the truth told from survivors and evidence, but
the honest truth behind the attack went to the grave with Eric and ... Show more content on

The struggle to change and be accepted into society can sometimes be too much to handle. Family
upbringing, acquaintances and friends play a major role in the way the youth of today think.
Throughout the movie American History X Derek and Danny struggle with changing who they have
become into something they feel they should be. At the beginning of the movie Derek is a terrible
role model for his younger brother Danny. Derek becomes involved in the neo–Nazi movement and
winds up in prison after killing rival gang members. Once Derek is released from prison, he realizes
the Nazi scene isn't a righteous cause and pushes his brother to also change his way of thinking.
Danny, who will follow his brother through whatever, decides to help him rip all the Nazi
paraphernalia off their shared bedroom wall. Derek was motivated to change his way of life because
of Lamont, a black prisoner, who befriended Derek while in prison. At first the two were not too
sure about each other considering that Derek had a huge swastika tattoo on his chest. But throughout
Dereks sentence the two managed to have each others backs in prison and that led Derek to believe
that he should not be ignorant towards other races/religions. Derek and Danny managed to change
their ignorant way of thinking. They gained their independence by cutting ties with the neo–Nazi
movement and also learned how to accept all different types of people into their lives. Section

I thought that the massacre at columbine high school was a horrible thing to happen. i think it could
have been easily prevented if someone would have just talked to them about it and how they could
fix their social problems. Dylan and Eric were very troubled teens who didn't know what to do and

One possible theme of Columbine would be change. Before the horrific catastrophe, an event as
gruesome as the Columbine massacre was almost unheard of. Society as a whole would never for
one second think that two young, seventeen year old boys would be capable of so much chaos; no
one would think that the youth of our times could embody so much hatred. Once terror struck and
the shooting occurred our entire country felt the sting of it. America reacted by having stricter
security for schools and harsher punishments for individuals who performed these crimes. Perhaps
the greatest change after the shooting was that people began living in fear. With no clear resolution

None of the other characters should have felt guilty because the guns were in Eric and Dylan's
hands– not theirs. As far as people still feeling guilty today, some will because the thought always
arises of what they could've done or what they should've done to help or avoid this completely. The
truth to the matter is that these horrific things happen and there's nothing other individuals can do to
stop it. We can't see the future and what's coming next, but when it comes we can be ready for it and
overcome it the best we can. h. The most obvious heroes in this book would be law enforcement
who helped with the aftermath and ushered students out to safety as well as Mr. D who put it all out
on the line to save as many students as he could while the massacre occurred. The greatest hero in
this story to me is Mr. Dave. He bled out waiting for the help that never came yet at the end of the
day he turned into a martyr for the safety of his students. It's terribly unfortunate that he passed

Pros And Cons Of Columbine Shooting
The Columbine Shooting On April 20, 1999, two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who
attended Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado went on a shooting spree, leaving thirteen
dead and twenty wounded before turning the guns on themselves and committing suicide. This
attack would go down as the single worst school shooting in United States history and the shooting
spread fear in people across the nation and caused a rise in security. Schools across America
introduced new security measures such as metal detectors, dress codes and I.D. badges. Despite the
fear left in many people they were still asking several questions: How could two kids do such a
horrific act? Was bullying to blame for this attack? Could attacks like these be prevented? At first
the cause of the shooting was unknown and there were many conspiracies regarding the reason for
the attack. Some believed that the shooting was a result of the goth culture, violent video games, and
the music they listened to. Others thought the shooting was a direct ... Show more content on

Dylan was a quiet reserved kid who enjoyed using computers and did not fit in with the jock culture
at school. He was a considered a "normal" kid and like everyone else he even attended the prom
three days before the shooting. Unlike Harris, Klebold was easier to understand; he was a kid that
suffered from depression. He was also temperamental and suicidal. The two boys were perfect for
each other and they fed off of each other's emotions. Ultimately, the two did not care about the jock
culture and they were not bullied; they just simply hated everyone, and they wanted to kill. Harris
and Klebold were seeking "fame" and they wanted their attack to go down infamously as the worst
massacre in the history of the United States. The two also wanted to create a nightmare that would

High School Shootings : The Killers Of The Columbine Shooting
Have you ever wondered why we in America have so many lock down drills? Or why the states
have changed our gun laws for schools? Well this is why, because the Columbine Shooting was the
first of its kind, our nation has studied the killers, their victims, the happening of the traumatic day
and the events that followed in order to ensure that schools today are safer. There was a way to
many people shoot and killed in this devastating act of violence towards Columbine High

Harris had a motive towards this tragedy which was that the two commited the killings because they
had been bullied, were both members of a group of outcasts that was intrigued by goths or had been
impacted by violent video games and music;nonetheless none of these theories were ever proven.

Argumentative Essay On The Columbine Shooting
More mass shooting in America are more common now than they have ever been before. The
columbine shooting is the biggest school shooting in history. It was on April 20, 1999 when this
devastating event happened. One of the things that made the shooting memorable is that the shooters
shot Christians. The columbine shooting was an awful event. Twelve students and one teacher were
killed. The shooters names were Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. There are many different theories
on why they did it. They were bullied, they were different, and some say they did it so they would
just be remembered. "Klebold was hurting inside while Harris wanted to hurt people" says Dave
Cullen who did an investigation trying to understand why two high schoolers could do such a thing.
Dylan and Eric were a part of a trench coat mafia. They both had loving families, and were raised
good. They wanted the shooting to be the "most deaths in United States history" and it would've
been if their plan would have worked. They planted bombs in the cafeteria but they didn't go off,
they had a backup plan though. When they realized the bombs didn't go off they grabbed their guns
and headed into the school. If their bombs would've gone off it would've killed around six hundred
people. The People who lost their lives that day are, Cassie Bernall age 17, Steven Curnow age 14,

The Columbine High School Shooting
Between the comings and goings of an average day in America there are momentous events that fall
across the globe and stain history for better or for worse. These world–changing occurrences are
often wrought with tragedy, and cling to the mind with the sharp talons of loss. More often than not,
unfortunate events have a way of establishing a camaraderie among humanity, setting in motion a
gentle shift in people 's disdain for others– if only for a moment– and allowing them to move
together and reinvent the rules and techniques; readjusting and shifting until something that works is
sealed into standard procedure. From turmoil and hurt, humanity corrects itself and grows. Of these
events, the Columbine High School shooting comes to many as one that completely morphed
America 's culture and sense of security. The assault was carried out by Eric Harris and Dylan
Klebold, students of the school and close friends. They had nourished the idea, feeding it hours of
attention and deep consideration. Then, they went forward with it on April 20, 1999. The boys took
the event seriously, setting up decoy bombs and then positioning their vehicles in the school parking
lot with an arsenal and military methods of execution prepared to put in motion. They ending
thirteen lives, including their own. The ruin caused by the shooting would have been greater, had the
plan prevailed. Their actions had a severe impact on the way many people live and think. When one

I remember the Columbine shooting like it was yesterday. I think it is the first event that I
experienced that made me realize that the world is a dangerous place. It was an event that open the
nation's eyes to psychological issues that are faced by adolescents. It seems like every class
psychology class I took after that found an opportunity discuss the event, and many liked to blame
the prevalence of violence in entertainment. Sadly, it is also due to this event that there is so much
literature available on the subject. The problem with this research, is that it seems to vary greatly on
it's findings. In 2011 the supreme court ruled that the research was "unpersuasive" (Ferguson, 2013).

The parents of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris should not be put on trial for the gruesome crime that
their sons did and here are the reasons why.
The awful crime that happen at Columbine High School, Denver, Co in April 20, 1999 was a tragic
moment for many families. Two boys by the name of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went into the
High School with guns and bombs. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were 17 year old students at
Columbine High, they was so isolated from real people and playing shooting games. They forgot
about the real world and they planned for months to do the shooting.

They never ask them but the two kid could have lie to their parents. Dylan's dad found a bomb, but
he might have thought it was fake. People collect fake weapons, it is a thing and Dylan could of lie
about it.
The second reason why the parents of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris should not be put on trial
because they didn`t do it. They did not tell their kids to kill anyone. They were good parents and
raised them right. They killed because kids was bulling them. The parents should not be blame with
something that they had nothing to do with.
The third reason of why the parents of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris should not be put on trial
because it was not their responsibility. Dylan and Eric shot because they were being bullied by kids
at school, so it is the kids responsibility to tell a grown up about what is happening.
However, many believe that Dylan and Eric`s parents should go on trial because it is their
responsibility to talk to their kids and what their kids do no matter what the kids do. Even though it
is most the time the parents' responsibility for their kids action if they are at home. At school it is the
kid's responsibility to tell a teacher or their parents. The parents had no idea what was happening

Examples Of The Crucible And The Columbine Shootings
We Cannot (E)scapegoat What Happened The mainstream media is constantly being blamed for
crimes that people themselves commit. In The Crucible, a group of girls were caught dancing in the
woods by Reverend Parris. This was thought of as a sin and the girls used their overly religious
society to their advantage by blaming their actions on witches. The Columbine shooting was a tragic
event that brought high school safety into a new light. Both of the seniors committing the crime
killed themselves before they could be questioned, causing the terrified public to blame the incident
on the media, specifically Marilyn Manson. While The Crucible and the Columbine shootings are
similar in people standing up for incoherent children and deaths for selfish reasons, they are also
very different. Children in high school were killed in the Columbine shooting while adults were
killed in The Crucible and the who was targeted. A scapegoat, by definition is,"A person who is
blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency"
(Oxford dictionary). The Crucible is easily one of the greatest examples of a scapegoat. The town
was completely prepared to blame witches for the girls actions. The Columbine shooting blamed
Marilyn Manson, a man known for his outlandish dress and style. On April 20th, 1999, two students
murdered 12 teachers and students in cold blood. These two seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold,
committed suicide before incredulous government officials were able to ask them why. The public
standing up for incoherent children was one of the interchangeable qualities brought forth in these
stories. People were killed because the public was oblivious and not paying attention to what these
kids were calling out. The two criminals, guilty of the Columbine massacre, were social outcasts.
Dylan Klebold, one of the two seniors, was clinically depressed and was prepared to commit
suicide. They had gotten arrested previously for breaking into a van, and spend the rest of that year
trying to convince everyone they were sorry. Both of the teenagers were openly hateful as well. Eric
Harris wrote in his journal,"You know what I hate? Star Wars fans: get a friggin life, you boring

Essay On Columbine Shooting
On the morning of April 20, 1999 – Adolf Hitler's birthday – two students entered Columbine High
School in Littleton, Colorado, with as many guns and pipe bombs as they could carry. The original
plan was to plant bombs in the cafeteria to drive teachers and students to the parking lot, and from
there they would shoot as many people as they could. More explosives would be detonated once
police and ambulances arrived. But the first set of bombs failed to explode. So instead, Eric Harris
and Dylan Klebold simply wandered their way around school grounds, gunning down whoever was
unfortunate enough to cross their path. In less than an hour, the two teens killed twelve students and
a teacher. More than twenty others were also wounded. The onslaught ended when Harris and
Klebold turned the guns on themselves in the library. Dylan Klebold grew up in an upper middle
class family and was a kid few would have expected to carry out such an attack. His father was a
geophysicist and also ran a successful mortgage business, and his mother worked with the disabled
(Dylan Klebold Biography, 2015). The kid was smart and participated in a gifted student program.
He was shy, loved baseball, and enjoyed being a soundman for school theater productions. Because

This theory states that sources of strain – including failure to achieve goals, lack of positive stimuli,

as many people as they could? Investigators later found that around 11:10am the pair walked into
the cafeteria and placed 2 duffel bags each containing a 20 pound propane bomb set to explode at
11:17am. The boys then went back outside to wait for the bombs to go off. When the bombs failed
to detonate, Eric and Dylan began their shooting spree. "Do You ... Show more content on

10 minutes after the first shot was fired, Harris and Klebold entered the school Library. The hearts of
students dropped and the whole building filled with a cloud of fear. A total of 52 students, 2 teachers
and 2 librarians were trapped and hiding. The eerie silence was quickly broken when Harris shouted
"Get up!" "All the jocks stand up! We'll get the guys in white hats!" When nobody stood up, Harris
was heard saying "Fine, I'll start shooting anyway!" 6 lives were allegedly taken in that library.
While still on hunt for innocent students, Harris and Klebold bumped into an acquaintance named
John Savage. Savage asked them what they were doing and Klebold replied "Oh just killing people."
The killers then began to make comments about how they no longer found the thrill in shooting their
victims. By 12:02pm, the two had re–entered the library where the room was officially empty of
surviving students. At 12:08pm with the death tally at 13, Harris leaned up against a bookshelf and
positioned his Savage 67H pump shotgun between his legs and the barrel inside of his mouth.
Klebold, on his knees, aimed his TEC–9 semi–automatic handgun at his left temple. "One, two,

Shooting At Columbine High School
Abstract
This paper focuses on the idea of prevention of bullying and school violence. It also takes a look at
the events leading up to the shooting at Columbine High School. Could the tragedy have been
prevented? If so, how? These boys most likely had serious mental illness. According to Cullen
(2004) " Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were radically different individuals, with vastly different
motives and opposite mental conditions." The boys were also severely bullied for being different
than their peers. Make Beats not Beat Downs (2009) made the observation that 86% of students
said, "other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them" causes teenagers to turn to
lethal violence in the schools. We need to work together in order to bring an end to bullying and
school violence.
Why is it that we do not take action until tragedy strikes? A school should be one of the safest
environments for a child or young adult to be in. Schools should be working harder to inforce bully
free zones. Bullies are what causes students to feel that they need to take out all their anger on
others, and sometimes those results are catastrophic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Baezelon (2013) says that "Bullying is a particular form of harmful aggression, linked to real
psychological damage, both short and long term." A bully is someone who feels the need to pick on
others, sometimes due to his or her own inferiority. There are four different types of bullying.
Physical bullying is any type of physical harm to someone, such as hitting, kicking, or pushing.
Verbal bullying is putting someone down through words some examples are name calling or insults.
Indirect Bullying is gossiping or spreading rumors with the intention to hurt the victim. Cyber
Bullying is hurting someone through social media. (Make Beats not Beatdowns,

Theories Of Columbine Shooting
The psychological approach is made up of many theories. The social learning theory, the social
control theory, and the social identity theory. They all apply to The Columbine Shooting. According
to Ronald L. Akers and Robert L. Burgess's Social learning theory differential association is learned
criminal behavior. Criminal behavior is often learned from interacting with certain social groups in
person or via the internet. Criminal behavior is easily learned by individuals being introduced to
techniques of committing the crime and specific direction of motives, drives, rationalizations, and
attitudes. According to with today's technology on the rise school shootings can be understood by
societal concern of the increase of violent video games ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
School shooters usually do not plan on getting away with the crime because the shooter has adopted
a kill or be killed attitude and as such, is willing to take one's own life. The third element of the
social bond theory involvement. Harris and Klebold, spent a substantial amount of time involved in
a lot of illegal online activities that included searching for information as to how to make pipe
bombs and other explosives. Revenge is a motive in more than 50% of the school attacks because
the offenders believed that retaliation is the only way to get revenge for the wrongful behaviors and
actions of others, some investigators believed that the Columbine Shooting was out of revenge, and
others believed that Harris and Klebold just had severe mental issues. The last element is belief.
Belief is a common value system within a culture. Belief plays a role in deviance in two ways, the
criminal either neglects the moral beliefs they have been taught, or justifies their deviant behavior
beliefs so that they can engage in criminal activity, while still believing it's wrong. Harris and
Klebold belief was a mix of both, they disregarded the social norms of society and they justified
their belief even though they knew it was wrong. A tape left behind showed footage of the boys
confessing they wrong doing and how devastated their parents would be, but still followed through

Since Columbine, in which two students carried out one of the most deadly school shootings in

blame for the terrible day in history.
"Approximately 90 percent of kids in the U.S. play video games, and more than 90 percent of those

Columbine shooting On April 20, 1999, two teenage boys killed twelve students, and one faculty
member, and then proceeded to commit suicide at the high school they attended. At the time, this
event would be recognized as the largest mass shooting in American History. The media portrayed
the perpetrators as horrible, sick people because of their atrocious crime. However, a closer look
behind the reasons that drove them to such violence shows that a psychiatrist may have even
diagnosed them with an mental illness. In America today, mental illness as it relates to violence and
crime is highly debated as to whether or not it plays a factor in crimes. Even though ... Show more

However, these indications were either neglected or overlooked (by others). When a violent crime is
being planned "adolescents [will] first hide their destructive fantasies, over time they [will] feel a
need to express themselves, Some create drawings, poems and dropped hints of their plans"
(Robertz). Klebold expressed his fixation of violent crimes by portraying it in his schoolwork.
Weeks prior to the incident, he turned in multiple assignments depicting his disturbed mindset. One
of them was a creative writing, the content described a scenario similar to Columbine, where a lone
gunman goes on a killing spree (Shepard). Another a research paper , The Mind and Motives of
Charles Manson, described the graphic detail of Manson's various murders and his motives. The
graphic content within Klebold's work, described the violence of killings that was inappropriate for
a school research paper, displaying that he was disturbed. Not only did the boys display their
violence in their school work, but also with how they interacted with their fellow students. After the
shooting, the media theorized that the boys' motives for the attack were because students in their
school bullied them. Several experts thought that "The main [reason for their attack] was [that]
Harris and Klebold were victims of brutal high school bullies. They were social outcasts, persecuted
by the jocks and the popular kids" (Brooks). However, this seems to be the opposite of what really
happened. Klebold and Harris would aggressively bully other students in their school environment.
A student who faced bullying described how "[the boys] threatened and intimidated another student
to the point that he was in tears and afraid to attend school" (Langman). If these instances of their
excessive bullying towards other students, and their violent mindset were not ignored, then possibly
the Columbine attack could have been prolonged, or avoided

Columbine Shooting : A High School
Emilie Barone Ms. Davis College Prep 1 18 April 2017 The Columbine Shooting On April 20, 1999,
tragedy struck a Colorado high school. It started out as an ordinary spring day in Jefferson County,
but it soon turned horrific. "The tragedy began at approximately 11:10 a.m. on that sunny Tuesday,"
(Gimpel 27), right around lunchtime. No one could have anticipated the events that would soon
follow, devastating the otherwise average suburban town. The lives of the students of Columbine
High School and their families would never be the same after that catastrophic day. Two states away

Upset by the awful memory, Crigger shares, "I was four months pregnant with my first child...and I
really started thinking, what kind of world am I bringing my child into?" The disaster brought to
light just how alarmingly scary of a place the world can be. Crigger was one of many worried
parents all over the country after the harrowing event. Many efforts were put into effect, at
Columbine High School as well as others, to try and prevent future violence in schools. School
authorities attempted to create a profile for potentially violent students, but soon realized it was a
flawed idea, as violence doesn't fit any specific profile. Anti–bullying policies were put in place
instead, as it was discovered that the shooters had been bullied in the years before the shooting.
Although the two didn't attack any specific students as a result of being bullied, school authorities
still believed the policies to be a strong plan (Gimpel 86–88). The hope was that this would help
students and prevent further tragedy, helping any victims of bullying deal with it in a productive
way. This terrible event brought into question the safety and security of public schools. Crigger
recalls, "I really considered homeschooling after that," Crigger, along with numerous other fearful
parents, wanted schools to be more secure and safe for their children. Schools are a place for
learning, nurturing, and shaping young minds. But after the shooting, schools were a place of terror

On April 20, 1999, two 'troubled' teenagers fatally shot twelve students, one teacher and wounded
twenty four others at Columbine High School. When asked to name a victim of the Columbine
massacre, most people cannot produce a name but can name the shooters: Eric Harris and Dylan
Klebold. Too often do Americans and citizens of the world remember the perpetrators of tragedies
rather than the victims themselves. In an article published by Newsweek written by Max Kutner
named "Mass Shootings and News Media: A Connection?", Anderson Cooper stated in an on air

It's April 20, 1999 an ordinary Tuesday morning at columbine high school. In about two weeks
approximately 300 seniors will be graduating and perhaps attending college. For many students this
means that they will be moving to a different chapter in their lives, and the beginning of a new life
and life journey however for many students these goals won't be accomplished. On this particular
Tuesday morning several students' lives will unfortunately end in tragedy. Students today will head

will not allow anything to get in their path.
Their highly anticipated nightmare to which they refer to as a dream will come to a reality and end
with the lives of 12 students and 1 teacher. How far will two bullied teenagers seeking for revenge
go? Well just enough to end their own lives.
As the first lunch period begins students rush in, the lunchroom will be seating about 500 students

Columbine High School Shooting On April 20th, 1999 in Jefferson County, two seniors started a

were recommended to be hired. They were both into violent video games, and it also turns out that
they both had a background with the police in that area, for breaking into a van and stealing about
$1500 worth of stuff. The pair soon started to develop interests in Nazism, which happened after one
of them wrote a report about Hitler and the Holocaust, and interests in white supremacy. Harris and

Psychopathy In The Columbine Shootings
I think one theme of Columbine is that some people do bad things for no apparent reason.
Everyone sought someone or something to blame for Eric and Dylan's actions, but
ultimately they were just two kids born with severe mental issues. Nothing happened to
them to make them the way they were. Signs of psychopathy were evident from a young
age, especially in Eric. They were destined to act out violently in some way or another.
b.) Dylan Klebold was tall and gangly with long hair. He loved technology and baseball. He
was very smart. He had a hard time socializing with girls which caused him much angst.
It was revealed through his journals that he was depressed throughout high school, and he
often expressed the desire to die.
c.) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The
most memorable passage was the one that described the shooting. There was so much
information that I never knew about the Columbine shooting.
d.) The author repeatedly refers to Eric and Dylan as very intelligent and recognizes that they
would have killed hundreds of people had their plan succeeded. If the book does
encourage copycats, it will be because Cullen details their plan and highlights their
mistakes. For example, Cullen writes that the faulty wiring of the bombs prevented
hundreds of deaths. Someone planning a school massacre could learn from the mistakes
of Eric and Dylan. Since their plan is clearly outlined, someone of lesser intelligence than
Dylan and Eric could easily copy their ideas.
e.) Eric and Dylan seemed to be completely normal teenagers. No one ever suspected them
to become mass murderers. Eric was charming and always seemed genuinely remorseful
when he made a mistake. Dylan loved baseball, and he was planning to go to college. The
fact that they appeared so normal makes them even more frightening. It challenges
society's perception of killers. Most people imagine school shooters as lonely

This emphasizes that a tragedy such as this one could strike at any school, thereby disproving the
misconception that the shooting was done at a distant, unfamiliar, and anomalous campus. For
example, just like all schools in America during the shift towards summer, Columbine's "[trees]
were leafing, anthills rising, [and] lawns growing vibrant in their brief transition from winter brown
to parched summer brown" (Cullen 13). The familiar progression "from winter brown to parched
summer brown" portrays Columbine in a familiar light that any student in America could connect
with. By doing this, Columbine becomes more than a distant tragedy, but one so close that it shares
the same rising anthills and leafing trees as one's own school. In addition, the description of how
prairie dogs around Columbine "scurry about the clumps of mountain aster, foraging for food,
socializing, grooming each other, [and] fattening up for the winter" can be related to any number of
prevalent animals (Cullen 346). Connecting the author's imagery to the memory of squirrels

School Shootings : Columbine, And The Childhoods Of School...
School Shootings: Columbine
School is supposed to be a safe place for children whether they came from a happy home or not.
Children go to school for a minimum of thirteen years and during this time is when they meet
friends, fall in "love" with their first girlfriend or boyfriend. They find out who they really are.
Unfortunately, during this time our children experience bullying and harassment from their peers.
This can lead to some very dangerous decisions, suicide or schools shootings. Through out the years
we have heard of a few school shootings, examples are Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and most
famously Columbine High school. In this essay you will learn about the childhoods of the two
young men who committed this violent crime and what lead up to the shootings.
First I would like to introduce Dylan Klebold, He came from an upper middle class family. He
attended "Normandy Elementary School in Littleton Colorado" for 2 years before being" transferred
to Governors Ranch Elementary School." While at Governors Ranch he was in CHIPS ( Challenged
High Intellectual Potential Students), this was a program for gifted children. During middle school is
when he met Eric Harris. Dylan' childhood friend Brooks Brown lived near the house that Eric's
parents had purchased. Soon Dylan and Brooks became friends with Eric and his friend Nate.

The Columbine shooting was once known as the largest high school massacre in US history. This
unfortunate event affected the way American schools now take precautions and impacted society.
The columbine shooters were two students, Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17. There are many
theories as to why they did their actions, but none of them have been proven correct. One theory is
that both Dylan and Eric were influenced by bullies. They believed that since they only chose jocks,
christians, and minorities, it meant something. Another theory is that they were apart of a group
called the Trenchcoat Mafia. Lastly, many believed that Eric and Dylan

Schools all over the world have become a bit stricter about the way that they handle certain
situations. They are also doing a better job to make sure that they keep their environment safer. For
instance, it was decided that the school should be closed for a while until everywhere was examined
and that there were no signs of any problems. In "The Columbine High Massacre," it states, "The
Columbine Shooting on April 20, 1999 had an enormous impact on not just their town, but
nationwide. Schools, and other places have become so much more aware of their surroundings and
how to go about things" (Madeline). The school staffs had a huge meeting which involved support
for the people who got killed and they talked about what must be done differently to prevent
shootings to ever take place again in the school. After this took place, the rules were stricter.
Students could not bring minor items to school such as a nail clipper because that would result into
the student getting suspended. If the rules at school were broken at all, students would face profound
consequences. Everything that happened on this day, to the teachers, and to the kids changed the
way people acted around the school. The school became more serious about what goes on around
them because the whole situation had a massive impact on how they focused on the school shooting.

The assailant's intention is to assault as many individuals as possible with no hope of surviving.
According to the New York City Police Department report on active shooters, 46% of active
shooters are stopped by law enforcement officials, or other bystanders, and 40% of the active
shooters either commit suicide or attempt suicide. (NYPD, 2011) Police departments nationwide are
training their officers to confront the active shooters quickly and as aggressively as possible. (Cain,
2010) Police departments have begun introducing various tactics in concealment, entering
doorways, and working in small groups to have a tactical advantage in eliminating the assailant.
Police agencies have been working closely with their local schools to avoid future massacres. Many
police agencies have implemented various approaches to ensure their response times are sharp.
Daviess County, Kentucky Sherriff's office began offering a 2–day training program that
demonstrates various entry and movement techniques when confronting an active shooter (Cain,
2010) Many other agencies have introduced live–fire scenarios using artificial projectiles, and the
use of ballistic shields. (Law Staff, 2008) As school shootings can never be predicted it is imperative
that the education institutions and law enforcement agencies are ready and vigilant at all times to
avoid other nationwide massacres.

Klebold commit a school shooting that changes the lives of Columbine students and staff. Two best
friends that make a deadly combination. They show up to the school with a plan to kill as many
people as possible.
The psychological state of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold played a part in the events that follow.
Eric had a primarily aggressive or sadistic personality. He was secondary antisocial, narcissistic, and
had paranoid features. These are all consistent with a severely disturbed personality syndrome called
"Malignant Narcissism" and he took Luvox for it. Harris hated the school, it's jock culture and he
also hated anyone Dylan and him believed mistreated him. He was considered talkative and volatile.
His rage was often visible and apparent to others around him. Eric Harris was placed under the
category of a psychopath. Dylan Klebold was placed under the category of a psychotic. Klebold had
paranoid delusional tendencies. He didn't hallucinate or lose complete touch with reality. He also

The Columbine Shooting A little over two years ago, one of the worst tragedies concerning our
nation's children was playing out in a small rural town in Colorado. The date was April 20, 1999; the
anniversary of Adolf Hitler's Birthday, for any history buffs. But for everyone else the day started
out like any other. In Jefferson County (often mistakenly reported as being in Littleton), Colorado,
children went to school and parents went off to work. Neither was overly concerned about the other,
or about how the day would go, but in a few hours, that would all change. Kleboldharris also went
off to school that fateful day in April. Only they knew that this day was anything but ordinary. This

Even though there was a thorough investigation, there are many questions that still surround this
tragedy. What caused these two teenagers to go to such drastic measures? Why was no one able to
stop them? Were there any signs that this kind of destruction was in the making? But, more
importantly, what has been the aftermath of this horrible massacre? These questions don't have any
definite answers, but speculations are more than abundant. In what was to become known as "the
basement tapes", kleboldharris gave the most revealing insight into their psyche. In these tapes
kleboldharris say that they were natural born killers. If we are to be held to this kind of thinking then
we are to believe that some people are just plain evil, and there is nothing that can be done to stop
them. But there were warning signs. And with warning signs, there is an opportunity for
intervention. The most easily identifiable accomplice in hardening the hearts of kleboldharris lies in
the media. From video games to movies, violence and callousness towards violence is everywhere.
The 'shock–jock', Howard Stern, was the most distasteful of the crowd. Immediately after the

The Truth Behind The Columbine Shooting
America's star detective Michael Moore has done it again! In this edition, he uncovers the truth
behind the Columbine shooting, and exposes the "real" menaces of America's society. Or this is
what we are led to believe...
The Columbine Shooting has solidified itself as a tragic event in America's past, and was a real
wake–up call to the nation's age–old gun problem. Michael Moore looks into this issue and decides
it provides a great premise for his next documentary, his next crusade to flush out the evils of this
world. The problem is, Bowling for Columbine is far from the truth; it is rather a distorted
representation of reality, carefully sequenced to push Michael Moore's agenda. If we look past the
film techniques, conspiracy theories, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To offer an explanation as to how America got to this "barbaric stage", an animated short, courtesy
of Matt Stone is played, which takes a satirical approach to the story of America's gun laws. The
general idea put across from this segment is that America's obsession with guns has transpired from
a fear of the black man; where it even went as far to suggest that the KKK negotiated with the NRA
to restrict black people's possession of a firearm. Moore then proposes that this fear has appeared in
many different forms, and that of which has been orchestrated by the government and large
corporations to boost consumerism. A hypothesis like this does seem plausible, however there is no
tangible evidence to reinforce this claim, just a lot of emotional appeal.
The majority of the documentary is spent proving this theory that Moore has ingeniously managed
to synthesise. Whether it is fear of the black man during slavery, fear of terrorists after 9/11 or fear
of teenagers after the Columbine Shooting; there is always a reason for America to worry. Moore
shows us that when people are scared, they look for ways to protect themselves, causing them to
spend money; shown by the increase in homeland security after 9/11, which also was apparently
caused by the CIA supplying Osama Bin Laden with weaponry and tactical training that was later
used against the USA. He then investigates the media's role in inflating these issues, stirring the

are fortunate for being seemingly far from these dangers. Even though no physical effects pertain to

It tremendously damaged the area, wildlife, and tourism all around the gulf. The thick oil extended
thousands of square miles around the Gulf of Mexico(Britannica). With these effects to the Gulf it
prevented my family and me from making our yearly trip to the beach. This left a hole in my heart
that would stay until I returned to the beach again. I longed to be back, but I, also, hoped and prayed
for the people affected by this unfortunate event. I knew to remain unselfish and not put my family
vacation before a disaster such as this. I learned to be patient from this and to not put my wants
before the unfortunate events that I cannot prevent and to stay humble even when disappointment

Columbine Shooting By Dave Cullen

  • 1. Columbine Shooting By Dave Cullen On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold carried out an attack on Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. They fired guns towards students, killing thirteen people and injuring more than twenty. Afterwards, they turned the guns on themselves. In 'Columbine', Dave Cullen analyses how and why Eric and Dylan massacred those people. When viewed in hindsight, events such as this are inspected to every minute detail; there are always ways to change the outcome. In the event of Columbine, there are many points in time at which the outcome could be changed completely with a single action; the points with the most significant potential are those which involve police investigations, close friends of the killers, and the time during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The day of the attack, however, he went off campus to eat at subway (44). It was a calm day with nice weather, so he likely felt at ease, without a need to patrol around the school. However, it was at this time that Eric and Dylan opened fire on Columbine. Gardner's response time was delayed because he was not on campus to hear the first shots, and therefore did not see Eric and Dylan walk into the school. Around 11:23, 4 minutes after the shooting started, Gardner pulled up to the school. (49). Gardner tried to locate where the shooting and explosions were coming from, almost as confused as some of the students. As Gardner stepped out of his car, Eric spotted the patrol lights and fired 10 shots at him. Gardner took cover behind the car, uninjured. He fired 4 shots at Eric with his pistol, missing all 4. Eric fired a few more shots, and pushed back into the school (51). Following protocol, Gardner did not follow Eric inside the school. As Eric reappeared in the west exit doorway, Gardner opened fire, as well as Deputy Paul Smoker; Eric was not hit. Eric retreated back inside the building (55). Dylan had no indication of a contingency (45). This implies that he may have not proceeded with the rest of the shooting if Eric had been shot down. Dylan was more depressed that homicidal; he probably would have committed suicide instead of going on to shoot more students, if given the chance. Additionally, it is possible that he felt threatened by Eric to go through with the shooting; if that influence was taken away, the event may not have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Columbine Shooting Theory The Columbine Massacre that occurred on April 20th, 1999 is one of the biggest shocks to hit the United States at that time. It was centered around two lonely and depressed high school boys, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who had a highly–detailed plan on attending school with explosives and firearms. The perpetrators murdered 12 students and a teacher during the attack along with injuring 21 additional people. The first victim who had their life taken was 17–year–old Rachel Scott who took shots in the head and in the torso when the two gunmen entered the school. "Scott was an energetic, sociable girl, who displayed concern for the well–being of others (About)." Eric and Dylan ended the attack by committing suicide. Rachel had received a journal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These boys did not make it all the way to high school with the intention to cause harm. There were many links between them, such as: bullying, depression, video games, social climate, gothic subculture, and music. The link between school violence and bullying has increased in attraction exponentially after the Columbine shooting. "The shooters were classified as gifted children who had allegedly been victims of bullying for four years." Many of those who are close to them regarded them as "the losers of the losers (Ball)". Klebold has also made remarks to his father about his hatred toward the jock culture in his high school. He added that Harris had been victimized by the jocks by stating to his father "They sure give Eric hell." There is no doubt this helped drive them to the decision they made. Before the shooting, Harris was scheduled a meeting with his appointed psychiatrist and had complained of depression, anger, and suicidal thoughts so he was prescribed with the antidepressant ... Case Analysis : Columbine Shooting Javiera Verdugo Criminal Mind and Behavior Section 202 9:30–10:45 4/5/16 Case Study: Columbine Shooting With technology advancing everyday, we are able to get the most recent and breaking news at the tip of our fingertips daily. We can get news on how the elections are advancing, the most recent terrorist attack, really anything. The media is always first to report on an incident and whether it is on our phones or televisions, we are always aware on what is going on in the world. An event that really grabs the medias attention are mass shootings that occur at schools. The most recent ones have been Sandy Hook and Oregon's Umpqua Community College, and though those both had many victims and were traumatic, they are only examples of the most deadly school massacres. Sadly, there have been many school shootings but one of the more famous ones in American history is the Columbine shooting. Dylan Klebold, who was 17 years old and Eric Harris, who was 18, conducted the shootings. The shooting occurred on April 20th, 1999 in Littleton, Colorado at Columbine High School. Dylan Klebold was born on September 11th, 1981. He had a brother who was three years older and like many boys, was involved with boy scouts and part of a little league team. His parents told investigators that he was a gentle boy and never gave any indications that he would be violent growing up. While attending elementary school, he was part of the gifted and talented program for children and was involved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Columbine Massacre "ranked as one of the worst mass shootings in U.S history as well as one of the deadliest episodes of school violence (Library, par. 6)." Twelve students and one teacher were killed, and twenty–three others were incapacitated. It still remains a mystery as to why Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went on a murderous rampage on that despicable day but the truth remains. The Columbine Massacre was and still is a day many will never forget. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were normal teenagers, who did what normal teenagers did. They both came from solid homes, with both of their parents together and older brothers. They similarly had jobs at the same pizza parlor, enjoyed playing video ... • 17. Columbine Shooting Thesis Introduction: April 20, 1999, is a day of remembrance for many people. The Columbine massacre had an effect not only on the Littleton, Colorado community but also on the entire country. In the book Columbine by Dave Cullen, the author tells the story of the tragedy that started with Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. The book begins with an introduction into both Eric and Dylan's thoughts, actions, and reasoning behind their plan to attack their high school. Throughout the book the author points out how the media gave a different view for the motives of the attack which caused false accusations towards the killers. This book tells the truth told from survivors and evidence, but the honest truth behind the attack went to the grave with Eric and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The struggle to change and be accepted into society can sometimes be too much to handle. Family upbringing, acquaintances and friends play a major role in the way the youth of today think. Throughout the movie American History X Derek and Danny struggle with changing who they have become into something they feel they should be. At the beginning of the movie Derek is a terrible role model for his younger brother Danny. Derek becomes involved in the neo–Nazi movement and winds up in prison after killing rival gang members. Once Derek is released from prison, he realizes the Nazi scene isn't a righteous cause and pushes his brother to also change his way of thinking. Danny, who will follow his brother through whatever, decides to help him rip all the Nazi paraphernalia off their shared bedroom wall. Derek was motivated to change his way of life because of Lamont, a black prisoner, who befriended Derek while in prison. At first the two were not too sure about each other considering that Derek had a huge swastika tattoo on his chest. But throughout Dereks sentence the two managed to have each others backs in prison and that led Derek to believe that he should not be ignorant towards other races/religions. Derek and Danny managed to change their ignorant way of thinking. They gained their independence by cutting ties with the neo–Nazi movement and also learned how to accept all different types of people into their lives. Section ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Research Paper On Columbine Shooting I thought that the massacre at columbine high school was a horrible thing to happen. i think it could have been easily prevented if someone would have just talked to them about it and how they could fix their social problems. Dylan and Eric were very troubled teens who didn't know what to do and did they oml thing they could think to do. then only thing that they thought would end the pain. to me it could have been prevented very easily. 20–34 i think the media and the police department somehow made the entire columbine situation 10 times worse. the police were there but wouldn't go in and help the kids. they waited 3 hours before they helped the teacher that got shot, and started shooting at dylan causing him to go back in and kill even ... • 25. Columbine Shooting Research Paper One possible theme of Columbine would be change. Before the horrific catastrophe, an event as gruesome as the Columbine massacre was almost unheard of. Society as a whole would never for one second think that two young, seventeen year old boys would be capable of so much chaos; no one would think that the youth of our times could embody so much hatred. Once terror struck and the shooting occurred our entire country felt the sting of it. America reacted by having stricter security for schools and harsher punishments for individuals who performed these crimes. Perhaps the greatest change after the shooting was that people began living in fear. With no clear resolution as to why or how someone could do something so terrible, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... None of the other characters should have felt guilty because the guns were in Eric and Dylan's hands– not theirs. As far as people still feeling guilty today, some will because the thought always arises of what they could've done or what they should've done to help or avoid this completely. The truth to the matter is that these horrific things happen and there's nothing other individuals can do to stop it. We can't see the future and what's coming next, but when it comes we can be ready for it and overcome it the best we can. h. The most obvious heroes in this book would be law enforcement who helped with the aftermath and ushered students out to safety as well as Mr. D who put it all out on the line to save as many students as he could while the massacre occurred. The greatest hero in this story to me is Mr. Dave. He bled out waiting for the help that never came yet at the end of the day he turned into a martyr for the safety of his students. Pros And Cons Of Columbine Shooting The Columbine Shooting On April 20, 1999, two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who attended Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado went on a shooting spree, leaving thirteen dead and twenty wounded before turning the guns on themselves and committing suicide. This attack would go down as the single worst school shooting in United States history and the shooting spread fear in people across the nation and caused a rise in security. Schools across America introduced new security measures such as metal detectors, dress codes and I.D. badges. Despite the fear left in many people they were still asking several questions: How could two kids do such a horrific act? Was bullying to blame for this attack? Could attacks like these be prevented? At first the cause of the shooting was unknown and there were many conspiracies regarding the reason for the attack. He was a considered a "normal" kid and like everyone else he even attended the prom three days before the shooting. Unlike Harris, Klebold was easier to understand; he was a kid that suffered from depression. He was also temperamental and suicidal. The two boys were perfect for each other and they fed off of each other's emotions. Ultimately, the two did not care about the jock culture and they were not bullied; they just simply hated everyone, and they wanted to kill. • 37. Argumentative Essay On The Columbine Shooting More mass shooting in America are more common now than they have ever been before. The columbine shooting is the biggest school shooting in history. It was on April 20, 1999 when this devastating event happened. One of the things that made the shooting memorable is that the shooters shot Christians. The columbine shooting was an awful event. Twelve students and one teacher were killed. The shooters names were Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. There are many different theories on why they did it. They were bullied, they were different, and some say they did it so they would just be remembered. "Klebold was hurting inside while Harris wanted to hurt people" says Dave Cullen who did an investigation trying to understand why two high schoolers could do such a thing. Dylan and Eric were a part of a trench coat mafia. They both had loving families, and were raised good. They wanted the shooting to be the "most deaths in United States history" and it would've been if their plan would have worked. They planted bombs in the cafeteria but they didn't go off, they had a backup plan though. When they realized the bombs didn't go off they grabbed their guns and headed into the school. If their bombs would've gone off it would've killed around six hundred people. The People who lost their lives that day are, Cassie Bernall age 17, Steven Curnow age 14, Corey Depooter age 17, Kelly Fleming age 16, Matthew Kechter age 16, Daniel Mauser age 15, Daniel Rohrough age 15, William ... • 41. The Columbine High School Shooting Between the comings and goings of an average day in America there are momentous events that fall across the globe and stain history for better or for worse. These world–changing occurrences are often wrought with tragedy, and cling to the mind with the sharp talons of loss. More often than not, unfortunate events have a way of establishing a camaraderie among humanity, setting in motion a gentle shift in people 's disdain for others– if only for a moment– and allowing them to move together and reinvent the rules and techniques; readjusting and shifting until something that works is sealed into standard procedure. From turmoil and hurt, humanity corrects itself and grows. Of these events, the Columbine High School shooting comes to many as one that completely morphed America 's culture and sense of security. The assault was carried out by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, students of the school and close friends. They had nourished the idea, feeding it hours of attention and deep consideration. Then, they went forward with it on April 20, 1999. The boys took the event seriously, setting up decoy bombs and then positioning their vehicles in the school parking lot with an arsenal and military methods of execution prepared to put in motion. They ending thirteen lives, including their own. The ruin caused by the shooting would have been greater, had the plan prevailed. Their actions had a severe impact on the way many people live and think. When one sifts through the information ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I think it is the first event that I experienced that made me realize that the world is a dangerous place. It was an event that open the nation's eyes to psychological issues that are faced by adolescents. It seems like every class psychology class I took after that found an opportunity discuss the event, and many liked to blame the prevalence of violence in entertainment. Sadly, it is also due to this event that there is so much literature available on the subject. The problem with this research, is that it seems to vary greatly on it's findings. In 2011 the supreme court ruled that the research was "unpersuasive" (Ferguson, 2013). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Essay On Columbine Shooting The parents of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris should not be put on trial for the gruesome crime that their sons did and here are the reasons why. The awful crime that happen at Columbine High School, Denver, Co in April 20, 1999 was a tragic moment for many families. Two boys by the name of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went into the High School with guns and bombs. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were 17 year old students at Columbine High, they was so isolated from real people and playing shooting games. They forgot about the real world and they planned for months to do the shooting. One of the people that was killed was a girl name Rachel. Rachel was only 17 years old when she was killed. Dylan's dad found a bomb, but he might have thought it was fake. People collect fake weapons, it is a thing and Dylan could of lie about it. The second reason why the parents of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris should not be put on trial because they didn`t do it. They did not tell their kids to kill anyone. They were good parents and raised them right. They killed because kids was bulling them. The parents should not be blame with something that they had nothing to do with. The third reason of why the parents of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris should not be put on trial because it was not their responsibility. Dylan and Eric shot because they were being bullied by kids at school, so it is the kids responsibility to tell a grown up about what is happening. However, many believe that Dylan and Eric`s parents should go on trial because it is their responsibility to talk to their kids and what their kids do no matter what the kids do. Two boys one day decided to show up to the school with guns. Many people have two of the wrong conclusion as to what happened that day. The first one is the two boys wanted to get revenge on the bullies that made them miserable at Columbine. They were known as the "Trench Coat Mafia outcasts" The second conclusion is the unexplainable: We can never understand what drove them to madness that day. • 69. Examples Of The Crucible And The Columbine Shootings We Cannot (E)scapegoat What Happened The mainstream media is constantly being blamed for crimes that people themselves commit. In The Crucible, a group of girls were caught dancing in the woods by Reverend Parris. This was thought of as a sin and the girls used their overly religious society to their advantage by blaming their actions on witches. The Columbine shooting was a tragic event that brought high school safety into a new light. Both of the seniors committing the crime killed themselves before they could be questioned, causing the terrified public to blame the incident on the media, specifically Marilyn Manson. While The Crucible and the Columbine shootings are similar in people standing up for incoherent children and deaths for selfish reasons, they are also very different. Children in high school were killed in the Columbine shooting while adults were killed in The Crucible and the who was targeted. A scapegoat, by definition is,"A person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency" (Oxford dictionary). The Crucible is easily one of the greatest examples of a scapegoat. The town was completely prepared to blame witches for the girls actions. The Columbine shooting blamed Marilyn Manson, a man known for his outlandish dress and style. On April 20th, 1999, two students murdered 12 teachers and students in cold blood. These two seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, committed suicide before incredulous government officials were able to ask them why. The public standing up for incoherent children was one of the interchangeable qualities brought forth in these stories. People were killed because the public was oblivious and not paying attention to what these kids were calling out. The two criminals, guilty of the Columbine massacre, were social outcasts. Dylan Klebold, one of the two seniors, was clinically depressed and was prepared to commit suicide. They had gotten arrested previously for breaking into a van, and spend the rest of that year trying to convince everyone they were sorry. Both of the teenagers were openly hateful as well. Eric Harris wrote in his journal,"You know what I hate? Star Wars fans: get a friggin life, you boring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Essay On Columbine Shooting On the morning of April 20, 1999 – Adolf Hitler's birthday – two students entered Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, with as many guns and pipe bombs as they could carry. The original plan was to plant bombs in the cafeteria to drive teachers and students to the parking lot, and from there they would shoot as many people as they could. More explosives would be detonated once police and ambulances arrived. But the first set of bombs failed to explode. So instead, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold simply wandered their way around school grounds, gunning down whoever was unfortunate enough to cross their path. In less than an hour, the two teens killed twelve students and a teacher. More than twenty others were also wounded. The onslaught ended when Harris and Klebold turned the guns on themselves in the library. Dylan Klebold grew up in an upper middle class family and was a kid few would have expected to carry out such an attack. His father was a geophysicist and also ran a successful mortgage business, and his mother worked with the disabled (Dylan Klebold Biography, 2015). The kid was smart and participated in a gifted student program. He was shy, loved baseball, and enjoyed being a soundman for school theater productions. Columbine Shooting Research Paper It was a day of mourning in Littleton, Colorado after Columbine High School suffered a deadly shooting, leaving 12 students and 1 teacher dead along with 24 others injured. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are the perpetrators responsible for the massacre, both students in their last year at the school. Many people are left curious as to why the two boys did what they did. Was the intent to kill as many people as they could? Investigators later found that around 11:10am the pair walked into the cafeteria and placed 2 duffel bags each containing a 20 pound propane bomb set to explode at 11:17am. The boys then went back outside to wait for the bombs to go off. When the bombs failed to detonate, Eric and Dylan began their shooting spree. "Do You ... The eerie silence was quickly broken when Harris shouted "Get up!" "All the jocks stand up! We'll get the guys in white hats!" When nobody stood up, Harris was heard saying "Fine, I'll start shooting anyway!" 6 lives were allegedly taken in that library. While still on hunt for innocent students, Harris and Klebold bumped into an acquaintance named John Savage. Savage asked them what they were doing and Klebold replied "Oh just killing people." The killers then began to make comments about how they no longer found the thrill in shooting their victims. By 12:02pm, the two had re–entered the library where the room was officially empty of surviving students. At 12:08pm with the death tally at 13, Harris leaned up against a bookshelf and positioned his Savage 67H pump shotgun between his legs and the barrel inside of his mouth. It also takes a look at the events leading up to the shooting at Columbine High School. Could the tragedy have been prevented? If so, how? These boys most likely had serious mental illness. According to Cullen (2004) " Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were radically different individuals, with vastly different motives and opposite mental conditions." The boys were also severely bullied for being different than their peers. Make Beats not Beat Downs (2009) made the observation that 86% of students said, "other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them" causes teenagers to turn to lethal violence in the schools. We need to work together in order to bring an end to bullying and school violence. Why is it that we do not take action until tragedy strikes? A school should be one of the safest environments for a child or young adult to be in. Schools should be working harder to inforce bully free zones. • 89. Theories Of Columbine Shooting The psychological approach is made up of many theories. The social learning theory, the social control theory, and the social identity theory. They all apply to The Columbine Shooting. According to Ronald L. Akers and Robert L. Burgess's Social learning theory differential association is learned criminal behavior. Criminal behavior is often learned from interacting with certain social groups in person or via the internet. Criminal behavior is easily learned by individuals being introduced to techniques of committing the crime and specific direction of motives, drives, rationalizations, and attitudes. According to with today's technology on the rise school shootings can be understood by societal concern of the increase of violent video games ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... School shooters usually do not plan on getting away with the crime because the shooter has adopted a kill or be killed attitude and as such, is willing to take one's own life. The third element of the social bond theory involvement. Harris and Klebold, spent a substantial amount of time involved in a lot of illegal online activities that included searching for information as to how to make pipe bombs and other explosives. Revenge is a motive in more than 50% of the school attacks because the offenders believed that retaliation is the only way to get revenge for the wrongful behaviors and actions of others, some investigators believed that the Columbine Shooting was out of revenge, and others believed that Harris and Klebold just had severe mental issues. The last element is belief. Belief is a common value system within a culture. Belief plays a role in deviance in two ways, the criminal either neglects the moral beliefs they have been taught, or justifies their deviant behavior beliefs so that they can engage in criminal activity, while still believing it's wrong. Harris and Klebold belief was a mix of both, they disregarded the social norms of society and they justified their belief even though they knew it was wrong. At the time, this event would be recognized as the largest mass shooting in American History. The media portrayed the perpetrators as horrible, sick people because of their atrocious crime. However, these indications were either neglected or overlooked (by others). When a violent crime is being planned "adolescents [will] first hide their destructive fantasies, over time they [will] feel a need to express themselves, Some create drawings, poems and dropped hints of their plans" (Robertz). Klebold expressed his fixation of violent crimes by portraying it in his schoolwork. Weeks prior to the incident, he turned in multiple assignments depicting his disturbed mindset. One of them was a creative writing, the content described a scenario similar to Columbine, where a lone gunman goes on a killing spree (Shepard). Another a research paper , The Mind and Motives of Charles Manson, described the graphic detail of Manson's various murders and his motives. The graphic content within Klebold's work, described the violence of killings that was inappropriate for a school research paper, displaying that he was disturbed. Not only did the boys display their violence in their school work, but also with how they interacted with their fellow students. After the shooting, the media theorized that the boys' motives for the attack were because students in their school bullied them. Several experts thought that "The main [reason for their attack] was [that] Harris and Klebold were victims of brutal high school bullies. They were social outcasts, persecuted by the jocks and the popular kids" (Brooks). However, this seems to be the opposite of what really happened. Klebold and Harris would aggressively bully other students in their school environment. A student who faced bullying described how "[the boys] threatened and intimidated another student to the point that he was in tears and afraid to attend school" (Langman). It started out as an ordinary spring day in Jefferson County, but it soon turned horrific. "The tragedy began at approximately 11:10 a.m. on that sunny Tuesday," (Gimpel 27), right around lunchtime. Many efforts were put into effect, at Columbine High School as well as others, to try and prevent future violence in schools. School authorities attempted to create a profile for potentially violent students, but soon realized it was a flawed idea, as violence doesn't fit any specific profile. Anti–bullying policies were put in place instead, as it was discovered that the shooters had been bullied in the years before the shooting. Although the two didn't attack any specific students as a result of being bullied, school authorities still believed the policies to be a strong plan (Gimpel 86–88). The hope was that this would help students and prevent further tragedy, helping any victims of bullying deal with it in a productive way. This terrible event brought into question the safety and security of public schools. Most come to the conclusion these copycat killers are mentally ill, however, in an article by Max Fisher and Josh Keller, "What Explains U.S. Mass Shootings?", a 2015 study "estimated that only 4 percent of American gun deaths could be attributed to mental health issues". Additionally, "30 percent of mass killings and 22 percent of school shootings appeared to have been inspired by previous events" (Kutner). The manor the media used to report the Columbine High School massacre and other mass shootings has influenced copycat shootings and plans. • 109. Reliving the Columbine Shooting "BOOM" glass goes flying in the parking lot in every direction, at 11:19 AM the first bomb is detonated and is also heard within the halls of Columbine. The adrenaline in Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris's vein begins but so does the nightmare. It's April 20, 1999 an ordinary Tuesday morning at columbine high school. In about two weeks approximately 300 seniors will be graduating and perhaps attending college. For many students this means that they will be moving to a different chapter in their lives, and the beginning of a new life and life journey however for many students these goals won't be accomplished. On this particular Tuesday morning several students' lives will unfortunately end in tragedy. Students today will head about their day as usual but two seniors, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris will be very vengeful and will not allow anything to get in their path. Their highly anticipated nightmare to which they refer to as a dream will come to a reality and end with the lives of 12 students and 1 teacher. How far will two bullied teenagers seeking for revenge go? Well just enough to end their own lives. As the first lunch period begins students rush in, the lunchroom will be seating about 500 students and also those who will decide to eat outside since columbine has open campus lunch. Many students will also head to different classrooms to get work done or study, such ideal place like the library, where most of the fatalities took place. While everyone is busy taking tests ... • 113. Columbine High School Shooting Shootings Columbine High School Shooting On April 20th, 1999 in Jefferson County, two seniors started a school massacre at Columbine High School. The attackers names Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, both students were 17. There was extensive planning and a lot of major events that happened with the two before the shooting. When the attack was underway, a bunch of key events took place inside the school. Then, the information that was found out after the whole incident, containing the skills and personalities about the shooters and what can be changed. When the tragedy of the Columbine School shooting occurred, 3 main components surfaced: the preparation and planning, the shooting itself, and the aftermath of what happened and what was done. Before the attack,a lot of events happened, not just the planning but important stuff to know about the shooters. It was said that they were good kids. They had summer jobs at the same pizza place, and when it was bought out, they were recommended to be hired. They were both into violent video games, and it also turns out that they both had a background with the police in that area, for breaking into a van and stealing about $1500 worth of stuff. The pair soon started to develop interests in Nazism, which happened after one of them wrote a report about Hitler and the Holocaust, and interests in white supremacy. Harris and Klebold wanted the attack to have more casualties than the Oklahoma City bombing, which was more than 167 deaths. Months before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 117. Psychopathy In The Columbine Shootings I think one theme of Columbine is that some people do bad things for no apparent reason. Everyone sought someone or something to blame for Eric and Dylan's actions, but ultimately they were just two kids born with severe mental issues. Nothing happened to them to make them the way they were. Signs of psychopathy were evident from a young age, especially in Eric. They were destined to act out violently in some way or another. b.) Dylan Klebold was tall and gangly with long hair. He loved technology and baseball. He was very smart. He had a hard time socializing with girls which caused him much angst. It was revealed through his journals that he was depressed throughout high school, and he often expressed the desire to die. c.) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most memorable passage was the one that described the shooting. There was so much information that I never knew about the Columbine shooting. d.) The author repeatedly refers to Eric and Dylan as very intelligent and recognizes that they would have killed hundreds of people had their plan succeeded. If the book does encourage copycats, it will be because Cullen details their plan and highlights their mistakes. For example, Cullen writes that the faulty wiring of the bombs prevented hundreds of deaths. Someone planning a school massacre could learn from the mistakes

Eric and Dylan seemed to be completely normal teenagers. No one ever suspected them to become mass murderers. Eric was charming and always seemed genuinely remorseful when he made a mistake. Dylan loved baseball, and he was planning to go to college. The fact that they appeared so normal makes them even more frightening. It challenges society's perception of killers. • 122. Columbine Shooting Research Paper Copyrighted in 2009, ten years after the horrific massacre at Columbine High School, Columbine by Dave Cullen strives to delve deeper into the mystery of that April shooting. Cullen was introduced to Columbine when he entered the scene as a journalist, but didn't finish his research until nearly nine years later with the publishing of his book (Cullen xiv). However, Columbine was well worth the wait, landing him an Edgar Award, Goodreads Choice Award, Barnes and Noble Discover Awards, and the Top Education Book of 2009 by the American School Board Journal (Cullen 1). Calling the coverage of Columbine a "great media blunder," Cullen recognizes his role in among the "guilty parties" of the press (Columbine xiv). This lead to a wealth of myths ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This emphasizes that a tragedy such as this one could strike at any school, thereby disproving the misconception that the shooting was done at a distant, unfamiliar, and anomalous campus. For example, just like all schools in America during the shift towards summer, Columbine's "[trees] were leafing, anthills rising, [and] lawns growing vibrant in their brief transition from winter brown to parched summer brown" (Cullen 13). The familiar progression "from winter brown to parched summer brown" portrays Columbine in a familiar light that any student in America could connect with. By doing this, Columbine becomes more than a distant tragedy, but one so close that it shares the same rising anthills and leafing trees as one's own school. In addition, the description of how prairie dogs around Columbine "scurry about the clumps of mountain aster, foraging for food, socializing, grooming each other, [and] fattening up for the winter" can be related to any number of prevalent animals (Cullen 346). Connecting the author's imagery to the memory of squirrels "foraging for food" and "fattening up for the winter," a reader can conclude that the environment around Columbine is not much different than that of his or her own ... • 126. School Shootings : Columbine, And The Childhoods Of School... School Shootings: Columbine School is supposed to be a safe place for children whether they came from a happy home or not. Children go to school for a minimum of thirteen years and during this time is when they meet friends, fall in "love" with their first girlfriend or boyfriend. They find out who they really are. Unfortunately, during this time our children experience bullying and harassment from their peers. This can lead to some very dangerous decisions, suicide or schools shootings. Through out the years we have heard of a few school shootings, examples are Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and most famously Columbine High school. In this essay you will learn about the childhoods of the two young men who committed this violent crime and what lead up to the shootings. First I would like to introduce Dylan Klebold, He came from an upper middle class family. He attended "Normandy Elementary School in Littleton Colorado" for 2 years before being" transferred to Governors Ranch Elementary School." While at Governors Ranch he was in CHIPS ( Challenged High Intellectual Potential Students), this was a program for gifted children. During middle school is when he met Eric Harris. Dylan' childhood friend Brooks Brown lived near the house that Eric's parents had purchased. Soon Dylan and Brooks became friends with Eric and his friend Nate. While attending Columbine Dylan felt like he never really fit in with the other students. Even though he felt that way he as very active in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 130. Columbine Shooting Theories On April 20, 1999, there was a school shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The Columbine shooting was once known as the largest high school massacre in US history. This unfortunate event affected the way American schools now take precautions and impacted society. The columbine shooters were two students, Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17. There are many theories as to why they did their actions, but none of them have been proven correct. One theory is that both Dylan and Eric were influenced by bullies. They believed that since they only chose jocks, christians, and minorities, it meant something. Another theory is that they were apart of a group called the Trenchcoat Mafia. Lastly, many believed that Eric and Dylan ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 134. Columbine Shooting Aftermath The Aftermath of Columbine High Shooting A tragic event that occurred the year of 1999, the year I was born, was the Columbine High School Massacre. This event occurred in Denver, Colorado. On April 20, 1999, two boys by the names of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, had hate for the school that they attended and the people who attended it. The shooters planned on bombing and shooting up the school, which they did. Klebold and Harris killed themselves after their shooting rampage, which left a total of 15 dead and 23 wounded (Larkin). Schools all over the world have become a bit stricter about the way that they handle certain situations. They are also doing a better job to make sure that they keep their environment safer. For instance, it was decided that the school should be closed for a while until everywhere was examined and that there were no signs of any problems. In "The Columbine High Massacre," it states, "The Columbine Shooting on April 20, 1999 had an enormous impact on not just their town, but nationwide. Schools, and other places have become so much more aware of their surroundings and how to go about things" (Madeline). The school staffs had a huge meeting which involved support for the people who got killed and they talked about what must be done differently to prevent shootings to ever take place again in the school. After this took place, the rules were stricter. Students could not bring minor items to school such as a nail clipper because that would result into the student getting suspended. If the rules at school were broken at all, students would face profound consequences. Everything that happened on this day, to the teachers, and to the kids changed the way people acted around the school. The school became more serious about what goes on around them because the whole situation had a massive impact on how they focused on the school shooting. The impact that this shooting had on ... The assailant's intention is to assault as many individuals as possible with no hope of surviving. According to the New York City Police Department report on active shooters, 46% of active shooters are stopped by law enforcement officials, or other bystanders, and 40% of the active shooters either commit suicide or attempt suicide. (NYPD, 2011) Police departments nationwide are training their officers to confront the active shooters quickly and as aggressively as possible. (Cain, 2010) Police departments have begun introducing various tactics in concealment, entering doorways, and working in small groups to have a tactical advantage in eliminating the assailant. Police agencies have been working closely with their local schools to avoid future massacres. Many police agencies have implemented various approaches to ensure their response times are sharp. Daviess County, Kentucky Sherriff's office began offering a 2–day training program that demonstrates various entry and movement techniques when confronting an active shooter (Cain, 2010) Many other agencies have introduced live–fire scenarios using artificial projectiles, and the use of ballistic shields. (Law Staff, 2008) As school shootings can never be predicted it is imperative that the education institutions and law enforcement agencies are ready and vigilant at all times to avoid other nationwide massacres. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold commit a school shooting that changes the lives of Columbine students and staff. Two best friends that make a deadly combination. They show up to the school with a plan to kill as many people as possible. The psychological state of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold played a part in the events that follow. Eric had a primarily aggressive or sadistic personality. He was secondary antisocial, narcissistic, and had paranoid features. These are all consistent with a severely disturbed personality syndrome called "Malignant Narcissism" and he took Luvox for it. Harris hated the school, it's jock culture and he also hated anyone Dylan and him believed mistreated him. He was considered talkative and volatile. His rage was often visible and apparent to others around him. Eric Harris was placed under the category of a psychopath. Dylan Klebold was placed under the category of a psychotic. • 147. The Columbine Shooting Essay The Columbine Shooting A little over two years ago, one of the worst tragedies concerning our nation's children was playing out in a small rural town in Colorado. The date was April 20, 1999; the anniversary of Adolf Hitler's Birthday, for any history buffs. But for everyone else the day started out like any other. In Jefferson County (often mistakenly reported as being in Littleton), Colorado, children went to school and parents went off to work. Neither was overly concerned about the other, or about how the day would go, but in a few hours, that would all change. Kleboldharris also went off to school that fateful day in April. Only they knew that this day was anything but ordinary. This was the day that they had been waiting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though there was a thorough investigation, there are many questions that still surround this tragedy. What caused these two teenagers to go to such drastic measures? Why was no one able to stop them? Were there any signs that this kind of destruction was in the making? But, more importantly, what has been the aftermath of this horrible massacre? These questions don't have any definite answers, but speculations are more than abundant. In what was to become known as "the basement tapes", kleboldharris gave the most revealing insight into their psyche. In these tapes kleboldharris say that they were natural born killers. If we are to be held to this kind of thinking then we are to believe that some people are just plain evil, and there is nothing that can be done to stop them. But there were warning signs. And with warning signs, there is an opportunity for intervention. The most easily identifiable accomplice in hardening the hearts of kleboldharris lies in the media. From video games to movies, violence and callousness towards violence is everywhere. The 'shock–jock', Howard Stern, was the most distasteful of the crowd. Immediately after the shootings he made comments about the girls running out of Columbine, screaming and waving their arms in the air, as being sexy. He claimed that if he was going to shoot them, he would first have had sex with them. He also made comments about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 151. The Truth Behind The Columbine Shooting America's star detective Michael Moore has done it again! In this edition, he uncovers the truth behind the Columbine shooting, and exposes the "real" menaces of America's society. Or this is what we are led to believe... The Columbine Shooting has solidified itself as a tragic event in America's past, and was a real wake–up call to the nation's age–old gun problem. Michael Moore looks into this issue and decides it provides a great premise for his next documentary, his next crusade to flush out the evils of this world. The problem is, Bowling for Columbine is far from the truth; it is rather a distorted representation of reality, carefully sequenced to push Michael Moore's agenda. If we look past the film techniques, conspiracy theories, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To offer an explanation as to how America got to this "barbaric stage", an animated short, courtesy of Matt Stone is played, which takes a satirical approach to the story of America's gun laws. The general idea put across from this segment is that America's obsession with guns has transpired from a fear of the black man; where it even went as far to suggest that the KKK negotiated with the NRA to restrict black people's possession of a firearm. Moore then proposes that this fear has appeared in many different forms, and that of which has been orchestrated by the government and large corporations to boost consumerism. A hypothesis like this does seem plausible, however there is no tangible evidence to reinforce this claim, just a lot of emotional appeal. The majority of the documentary is spent proving this theory that Moore has ingeniously managed to synthesise. Whether it is fear of the black man during slavery, fear of terrorists after 9/11 or fear of teenagers after the Columbine Shooting; there is always a reason for America to worry. Moore shows us that when people are scared, they look for ways to protect themselves, causing them to spend money; shown by the increase in homeland security after 9/11, which also was apparently caused by the CIA supplying Osama Bin Laden with weaponry and tactical training that was later used against the USA. He then investigates the media's role in inflating these issues, stirring the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
