Nobel Prize Research Paper
Nobel Prize
In this paper I am going to discuss the Nobel Prize. Firstly I will inform you of the history of the
prize, secondly its origin, and how it is awarded today. After that I will discuss the 2010 Nobel Prize
for Medicine, 1901 Nobel Prize for Physics, and the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Alfred Nobel
The Nobel Prize was named after a Swedish inventor and industrialist, Alfred Bernhard Nobel.
Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden on October 21, 1833. He was born into a wealthy
family, although due to the misfortune of losing building materials on sunken barges, Immanuel
Nobel, Alfred's father, was forced into bankruptcy the same year Alfred was born. In 1842 the
family moved to St. Petersburg, Russia. Alfred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he started working on IVF in the 1950s it took him about 30 years to make it successful,
and about 60 years until he won the Nobel Prize. Edwards is a professor at the University of
Cambridge England, he also founded Bourn Hall, the first IVF center. Today, vitro fertilization is
responsible for over 4 million births worldwide. Edwards discovered that an embryo can be
fertilized in a Petri dish in a laboratory ((4)
http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/2010/adv.html). The steps of IVF are started
by prescribing a fertility medication to control the timing of the eggs release. They monitor the
ovaries using ultrasound to make sure the multiple eggs can be collected and that they are
developing the eggs properly and that his is called ovulation induction. To retrieve the eggs a minor
operation is required, sedation and anesthesia is used to prevent discomfort. A hollow needle is
inserted through the pelvic cavity into the ovary to collect the eggs. Now the sperm is needed for
completion of the procedure, this is collected by ejaculation. The process of insemination now
begins; a single sperm is injected into the egg for fertilization. The egg is monitored to make sure
cell division is achieved. It is now considered an embryo after it is fertilized. Three days after the
egg is retrieved from the ovary, and fertilization is achieved then it is inserted into the women's
uterus. The two to four cell embryos is placed

In his biography, this excerpt is particularly resonant as to the importance of meaning to us as
humans, especially in the context of knowledge. We are taking a science course as part of Liberal
Arts curriculum, in order to make sense of the fact that knowledge is inherently not hermetically
sealed, but an intersection of the human experience with our reality which is our world. Science is
knowledge built upon objectivity, making sense of the meaning of this precarious reality by
grounding it in testable parameters, hence making the meaning of our experience less tenuous.
Craig Mello was born in New Haven Connecticut on October 18th 1960 to a paleontologist father
James Mello, and an artist mother Sally Mello. During his childhood, his family moved from

A Brief Biography Of Dorothy Crowfoot-Hodgkin
Dorothy Crowfoot–Hodgkin was born in Cairo, Egypt on May 12th, 1910 to John Winter Crowfoot
and Grace Mary Crowfoot. She spent most of her high school years in North Africa, where she
studied crystals and rocks. In 1937, she married Thomas Hodgkin, a son of a historian. Together
they had three children and three grandchildren. Hodgkin died on July 29th, 1994 in Ilmington,
United Kingdom. Hodgkin's work in x–ray crystallography assisted in determining the shape of
three–dimensional structures and helped pave a path for future women chemists. Hodgkin was born
on May 12th, 1910 in Cairo, Egypt to John Crowfoot and Grace Crowfoot. Her father worked in the
Egyptian Education Service in Cairo, Egypt before they moved to Sudan. There, her father worked
as the Director of Education and of Antiquities, but retired in 1926. However, before her father's
retirement, Hodgkin visited Sudan and fell in love with the country. After retirement, her father
devoted most of his time to archaeology and was Director of the British School of Archaeology

Ignite Incur Foundations Case Summary
Problem:
All foundations need support in order to be viable philanthropic institutions. This support includes
filing all of the paper work associated with the grants approval process, vetting the IRS standings of
nonprofits before grants can be made, doing preliminary screenings of nonprofits to identify if their
missions match the missions of the foundations they are attempting to solicit ect. Larger foundations
(50 million dollars and over in net assets) are able to hire a fulltime staff to handle these duties.
Smaller foundations (100 thousand dollars to five million dollars) often times give one of the
trustee's lawyers a few extra billable hours for the lawyer to manage the foundation as there is less a
smaller volume of administrative work associated with making fewer grants. Midsized foundations
(5 million dollars – 50million dollars in net assets) struggle because they do not have enough
administrative duties to warrant a full time salaried employee, however they are too big to be
managed effectively and efficiently by a lawyer or accountant. This discrepancy can cause a lot of
logistical issues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Persuasive Essay: The Folly Of Big Science Awards
Prizes are a big part of life, we all want to feel special and be given an award, but not all people feel
the same way as you do when you get a prize. It's no different with the Nobel Prize. "All the winners
of this year's Nobel Prizes deserve praise," (Prasad, 2015) but it is not always the fairest system of
awarding people. The biggest complaint by the author of The Folly of Big Science Awards was that
the awards were going to top notch scientists who already had fame, success, and funding for their
research; while thousands of other scientists along the road get little or no credit for helping the
"main" scientist out (Prasad, 2015). The author of the article made a persuasive argument because he
explained everything how it needs to be heard in an unfiltered way. For example, the "Nobel Prize
along with the Dickson Lasker–DeBakey, Canada Gairdner and other major awards, honors the
scientists who are usually in the least need of recognition and funding, which squeezes out
opportunities for other scientists" (Prasad, 2015). There are many scientists out ... Show more

This makes it in turn not fair for all of the other scientists who helped that recipient receive the
prize. There has never been a single scientist or medical researcher in the history of time to create or
proceed with an experiment all by him or herself. For example, Sigmund Freud an Austrian
neurologist, world famous for psychoanalysis was nominated for the Nobel prize 32 times but never
received it (2015, Nobel Media B.) Also, stated in the article, it creates the misconception "that
science is all about discoveries, when the cornerstone of science is replication and corroboration of
results." Even the greatest scientist have to constantly support and re–support theories and
experiments over and over

Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech
Al Gore's speech titled "Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech" is a powerful work of literature which
serves two purposes. The first purpose is stated in the title – to accept his award of the Nobel Peace
Prize. The second intent he had when writing the speech was to reiterate his points that awarded him
the honor in the first place. The speech explains his passion for the problem in our world that is the
climate change and how much we pollute our earth. To give a short gist of what his cause was, the
following quote offers much insight to the regretful aspect of our society that he is passionate about
fixing. He says "So today, we dumped another 70 million tons of global–warming pollution into the
thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His call to actions is for us to "choose between two futures." He goes on to explain further by
challenging the reader to challenge assumption as well as repetition. Challenging us to question the
repetition that would eminently happen if we don't unify and majorly change our actions. His
persuasion is made very strong and hard–hitting when he says "we are standing at the most fateful
fork in that path. So I want to end as I began, with a vision of two futures – each a palpable
possibility – and with a prayer that we will see with vivid clarity the necessity of choosing between
those two futures, and the urgency of making the right choice now." Reading this quote gives the
feeling of being very inspired and feeling empowered. That being said, I feel Gore should have
given more concrete action that he proposes we take. He should have said things such as we should
stop allowing every person to drive a motor vehicle as much as they please. If he'd said something
along those lines, it puts a specific concern in mind and helps along the putting the reality of better,
healthier world into fruition. He also could have proposed that perhaps every person who owns a
vehicle be required to plant a tree once a year. His speech was powerful with lots of drawing of
parallels, a lot of analogies, and many accounts of making associations. While he is lacking a
concrete and specific remedy for our current situation, maybe it is okay. Perhaps all we need is to
see that we do have a choice in how we can influence the world, and the rest is up to us to draw
from the inspiration and coordinate our own, personal next move to attain the goal that has been

Harry Markowitz Theory Of Finance Theory
Markowitz was hardly the first to consider the desirability of diversification.
Harry Max Markowitz – this is one of the founders of the theory of finance, the fastest growing
economic sciences. This lays the foundation for the applied financial management in a company,
using the tools and methods of investigation with a help of which any company can analyze its
financial position, to assess the value of its capital and its structure, to select the best investment
project and to manage it or to decide how and how many shares or bonds to issue.

However, Markowitz portfolio allocation theory is highly criticised, because the final portfolios are
not adequately diversified. This model was applied to a South African market, so that it gives
unrealistic portfolios, that are not diversified enough, as portfolio managers noticed (McLeod
(1998).
It was also discovered in a Bowen article, that Markowitz allocation portfolio theory requires a large
data volume and pointed out on the difficulty in covariance estimation. He doubted in the reliability
of the model predictions and deduced, that existed statistical barriers do not let an average portfolio
manager to use only this model in his day–to–day activities. (Bowen 1984:21)
According to the Michaud, the Markowitz portfolio allocation model isn't widely used in practice
despite its theoretical success because of 3 reasons:
Fundamentally demanding nature of model;

Malala Yousafzai Is Not An Average Teenager
As part of the Noble Committee, it has come to my understanding that the time has come to award
the winner(s) of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. There have been a selective few who have earned the
prize from brave activist, Martin Luther King Jr., to faithful, compassionate Mother Teresa. In order
to be awarded with this prize, our committee believes that the candidate had made the world a better
place while exhibiting the traits of wisdom, experience, and ambition. This year, I nominate Malala
Yousafzai. Now, I understand that my choice may be skeptical. After all, what has this seventeen
year–old done to deserve such a prize? Most of the time, teenagers are found hanging out with
friends, working part–time jobs, or tweeting about the newest celebrity drama. These teenagers are
not concerned about bringing peace to the world. However, I argue that Malala Yousafzai is not an
average teenager. Malala Yousafzai is a young Pakistani woman, who I believe should earn the 2014
Nobel Peace Prize. She fits the requirements of bringing peace and equality to the world, while
demonstrating courage by fighting for girls' education. In addition, Malala faced two challenging
obstacles in her life. First of all, Malala opposed the Taliban's unjust ways toward women, despite
how intimidating they were. The Taliban is an Islamic group that imposes a strict interpretation of
the Quran, the Muslim's holy book. It was a dark time for Pakistan because no matter where they

The Poetry Of Pablo Neruda
Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, also known as Pablo Neruda was born on July 12, 1904 in a
small town in Chile. Neruda's mother died shortly after his birth, leaving him in the care of his
father. Neruda began to write at the age of ten. Gabriela Mistral, who would later become a Nobel
Prize winner, recognized Neruda's talents by giving him books and encouragement he did not have
at home. In his early teen years, he began to publish his writings under the name of what we know
as "Pablo Neruda" in memory of the Czechoslovak poet, Jan Neruda, but also to avoid his father's
disapproval of Neruda's interests in literature. This essay will analyze Neruda's life and how it may

Because of Garcia Lorca's death, Neruda joined the Republican movement, starting off in Spain then
in France, Neruda worked on a collection of poems called España en el Corazón, or, Spain in our
Hearts. When these poems were written, Neruda seemed to be in a very difficult place and it seemed
like he would be for a very long time. For example, his poem, Cursed states, "Bring, bring the lamp,
see the soaked earth, see the blackened little bone eaten by the flames, the garment of murdered
Spain." Just by that excerpt, you can tell that the tone of this poem is very dark. In fact, the majority
of Neruda's poems in this book seemed as if they all had the same tone; gloomy and pessimistic. His
poems reflected this tone from the 1940's and onward, showing the political struggle in South
America. This does show that life experiences can really affect the way that poets write. A
disheartening event can lead a poet to write very depressing poems, and vice versa. Even though
Neruda wrote a lot about the political struggle, he also wrote a lot of poems about love, such as,
Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. One love poem that he wrote, Your Laughter, was
intriguing. The poem reveals how the person in the poem is obviously struggling in life. But, the
laughter of their significant other's motivates them to keep driving through whatever darkness they
are going through, and keeps them happy as well. A small excerpt of the poem states, "My struggle

Taking a Look at Frederick Banting
In the year 1891, on the 14th of November Frederick Banting was brought onto this world in a town
60 kilometres north of Toronto called Alliston. He was the last born of five other siblings and lived

completion of high school. He decided to study arts, however he failed. Banting always dreamt of
becoming a doctor and in September 1912, the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine,
accepted him as a student (Nobelprize.org the official web site of Nobel Prize). Banting took a
strong liking to the disease known as Diabetes. His studies and research, led him to understand that
insulin has control over the metabolism of sugar in the blood (Nobelprize.org the official web site of

believes that if you could extract the secretion made by the pancreas, then you can further
understand and advance in the treatment of diabetes ((Library and Archives Canada). Banting made
the decision of moving to the University of Toronto to reveal and discuss his idea with J.J.R.
Macleod. Macleod provided an opportunity for Banting and Charles Best (his assistant), to start the
work on May, 17, 1921 (Library and Archives Canada). Good timing and luck were the main factors
which led the Torontonian researches to announce their discovery first. This is due to the fact that

Persuasive Essay Against Animal Testing
Just in the United States, "there are about 26 million different species, from dogs to birds, being
used every year for medical and science related testing" ("Animals in Science / Research").
Throughout the process of testing, "monkeys are addicted to drugs, cats are deafened and have holes
drilled into their skulls, sheep and pigs have their skin burned off, and rats have their spinal cords
crushed" ("Animals in Medical Experiments"). As a result, animals face cruel conditions and have
no way of fighting back. Although medical testings on animals may cure the deadliest diseases such
as cancer and tuberculosis, the abuse and mistreatment these animals face while testing medicines
should be deemed inhumane, and such practices should be banned in the United States.
Unfortunately, animals being put through testing face conditions that are extremely unhealthy.
Animals are kept in unsanitary areas with little to no space at all. According to the organization
Humane Society International, "animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force
feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation..." ("Animal Testing – ProCon.org"). With no
rights at all animals are being forced into harsh medical testings for diseases that can kill or severely
injure the animal, such as polio. Through undercover investigation animals located in these labs are
living "stressful, monotonous, and unnatural lives of daily confinement and deprivation" ("Animal
Testing – ProCon.org"). Not only are these conditions being displayed in large laboratories, but also
universities such as University of Oklahoma. During these experiments animals are being"fed
chemicals, infected with diseases they would not naturally get, and are treated with no painkillers"
(Animal Testing – ProCon.org"). As a result, medical testing facilities should be unable to be this
inhumane to animals. Even though these tests may combat a widespread disease, animals should not
have to endure this type of treatment at their own will.
Although there has been thousands of reports of animal abuse in the field of medical testing, there
has also been an extraordinary amount of success that come from these examinations. With these
tests, scientists were able to advance in

The blue light from the sky would thus be light–scattered to the sides, while the reddish light would
be light that passes through the lower layers of the atmosphere and which has become impoverished
in blue rays owing to scattering. Later, in 1899, Rayleigh threw out the suggestion that the
phenomenon in question might be due to the fact that the molecules of air themselves exercised a
scattering effect on the rays of light.
In 1914 Cabannes succeeded in showing experimentally that pure and dustless gases also have the
capacity of scattering rays of light.
But a closer examination of scattering in different substances in solid, liquid, or gaseous form
showed that the scattered light did not in certain respects exactly follow the laws which, according
to calculation, should hold good for the Tyndall effect. The hypothesis which formed the basis of
this effect would seem to involve, amongst other things, that the rays scattered to the sides were
polarized. This, however, did not prove to be exactly the case.
This divergence from what was to be expected was made the starting point of a searching study of
the nature of scattered light, in which study Raman was one of those who took an active part. Raman
sought to find the explanation of the anomalies in asymmetry observed in the molecules. During

Abstract
Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was a Russian Physiologist that was born in Ryazan. He was born into a
Russian Orthodox family and was originally planning to follow in his father's footsteps as a priest.
His high–school training was received in an ecclesiastical seminary in Ryazan. He graduated
afterwards from the Natural Sciihck Faculity of the University of St. Petersburg, and in 1879
obtained his M.D. degree from the Medico–Chirurgical Academy in that city. He became a professor

Under his 45 year direction, this Institute became one of the most important centers of physiological
research (Babkin, 1949). In 1890, Pavlov was selected as Professor of Pharmacology at the Military
Medical Academy. Five years later, he was chosen to the then vacant Chair of Physiology, a position
he held until 1925.
Ivan Pavlov was known for many things. From studying digestion to studying the circulatory system
to studying nerves directing the digestive glands, he had an abundance of skill and knowledge. In
1889, he discovered the nerves controlling the gastric glands in which he received the 1904 Nobel
Prize in Physiology or Medicine. After setting aside his initial plan to follow his father into
priesthood, Pavlov received a medical degree at age 33 and spent the next two decades studying the
digestive system; but it wasn't until the last three decades of his life when he performed the
experiments that earned him his fame and significant place in history.

Not only did that cause salivation, but the sight of food, smell of food, the food dish, and even the

worked as a team to further research on the common–pool issue. Together they established a
philosophical foundation workshop called the Political Theory and Policy Analysis. The logic
behind its creation is based on a variety of economic, political science, and other disciplines to
understand the ecological and social economic behavioral affects and outcomes (Elinor Ostrom –
Biographical). Garette Hardin created the idea of the "Tragedy of the Commons" stating that people
think only of their own self–interests when sharing a common resource therefore leading to its
depletion. However, Elinor argued that common resources are well managed when those who
benefit from it the most will become in danger if controlled by external benefactors. Her research
came to a conclusion that most individuals have real preferences and if presented a situation where
they can evolve trust and reciprocity, they will manage those resources (Profile of Elino Ostrom).
She successfully demonstrated her findings that economic analysis can shed light on most

the first Pakistani, and the youngest person to receive this award. Along with that, along with that, I
am pretty certain that I am also the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize who still fights with her
younger brothers. I want there to be peace everywhere, but my brothers and I are still working on
that. I am also honoured to receive this award together with Kailash Satyarthi, who has been a
champion for children's rights for a long time. Twice as long, in fact, than I have been alive. I am

Persuasive Essay On Animal Testing
Just in the United States there are about 26 million different species, from dogs to birds, being used
every year for medical and science related testing. Throughout the process of testing, these animals
face cruel conditions and have no way of fighting back. Although medical testings on animals may
cure the deadliest diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis, the abuse and mistreatment these
animals face while testing medicines should be deemed inhumane, and such practices should be
banned in the United States.
Unfortunately, animals being put through testing face conditions that are extreme. Animals are kept
in unsanitary areas with little to no space at all. According to the organization Humane Society
International "animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced
inhalation, food and water deprivation..." ("Animal Testing – ProCon.org"). With no rights at all
organisms are being forced into harsh medical testings for diseases that can kill or severely injure
the animal, such as pollio. Through undercover investigation animals located in these labs are living
"stressful, monotonous, and unnatural lives of daily confinement and deprivation" ("Animal Testing
– ProCon.org"). Not only are these conditions being displayed in large laboratories, but also
universities. During these experiments animals are "fed chemicals, infected with diseases they
would not naturally get, and are treated with no painkillers" (Animal Testing – ProCon.org"). As a

Americ The Land Of The Free
America is often referred as the "the land of the free." It's a nation of diversity because of the open–
door policy that has been implanted. The open–door policy accepts any foreigner that is pursuing the
American Dream. Every year, thousands of immigrants, illegal and legal, come to the United States.
Many immigrants have different reasons why they feel the need to leave their country behind and
start a new life elsewhere. Those reasons may be: fleeing from a war, bettering their perspectives,
living in a better environment, or simply deciding that you like the concept of the American Dream.
For instance, in the 1990's my father, grandfather and uncles decided enough was enough as
thousands of other Shia's did. Saddam Hussein started bombing Shia villages, particularly Najaf and
Karbala. It was horrific. Men, women, children, and elderly people were killed. Not by the hundreds
but by the thousands. My family decided to uprise with the other families against Saddam Hussein.
Saddam Hussein didn't not take kindly to the up rise. They had no other choice but to flee. But not
everyone was as lucky as they were. Many people believe that America is the best place to start over
because they are guaranteed more freedom, benefits, and protection, just as did my parents.
What's your opinion on immigration? Many people look down upon immigrates, it's making the
daily headlines due to the debates that politicians have argued. Some politicians believe that the
immigrants will drive the

Out of all thirty three living Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, I am most interested in hearing Betty
Williams speak about her efforts to inspire peace. Betty Williams was awarded the 1976 Nobel
Peace Prize for her work and devotion to bettering the lives of suffering children. The 1976 Nobel
Peace Prize was jointly awarded to Betty Williams and her partner Mairead Corrigan in 1977

following year since none of the year's candidates for the award matched the criteria ("Nobel Peace

Informative Speech : Special Events
Special Events
Special events are parties with a 4–point purpose. To be most effective and worthwhile events
should optimally achieve four primary goals:
An event should celebrate your school's mission and vision;
An event should help you identify and engage new prospects for your school;
An event should raise money in support of your school's overall mission or for a particular program;
and,
An event should promote your school to the broader community.
Of all the revenue streams in a comprehensive advancement program, special events give your
school the most exposure to the largest possible audience, but they also cost the most per dollar
raised. While special events are considered a revenue stream within a comprehensive ... Show more

Finally, evaluate your event. Did you meet your participation and fundraising goals? Did you have
enough volunteers? What elements of your event were a hit, and which ones weren't as popular?
Were there any snags the night of the event that can be prevented next year? What would you do
differently next year? Consider more than just how much was raised and how many people attended
– factor in how much paid staff time and volunteer time the event required.
Institutional Funders
There are three types of institutional funders: Corporations, Foundations, and the Government.
Government funders include federal, state and local government agencies, and funding may be in
the form of pass–through funds, subaward funds, or contracts and collaborative agreements.
Federal grants are considered economic aid issued by the United States Government provided in
order for the recipient to carry out a public purpose. There are Categorical Grants that include
project grants and formula grants, Block Grants and Earmark Grants.
Corporate Giving
Corporate giving, also known as corporate philanthropy, refers to the act of for–profit companies
donating some of their profits or resources to charity. Donations may come from the company
directly, or through a separate, company–sponsored foundation.
Giving interests often complement the corporation's business interests, and are usually limited to
programs that benefit their employees, their

Wiesel 's Experience Of Injustice During The Holocaust
Over the course of eleven years, an approximated eleven million Jews were killed. This catastrophe
is commonly know as the Holocaust. The Holocaust began in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to
power in Germany (Rosenberg). Among the few hundred survivors was Elie Wiesel. Wiesel was
only fifteen years old when him and his family were deported to a concentration camp. His mother,
father and younger sister were all killed within the camp, but Wiesel and his two older sisters were
able to survive. After his traumatizing experience, Wiesel stood up for others who were being
oppressed. Elie Wiesel fought injustices world–wide through his actions and inspiring messages.

in Africa, of apartheid in South Africa, and victims of war in the former Yugoslavia" ("Elie Wiesel").
Despite his connection to countries who experienced the Holocaust, Wiesel made every oppressed
group his priority. In addition, Wiesel and his wife, Marion, have been especially committed to
helping Ethiopian–born Israeli youth through The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity's Best
Tzipora Centers for Study and Enrichment ("Elie Wiesel"). The Beit Tzipora Centers for Study and
Enrichment are learning centers in Israel for the youth of the community. The centers are proven to
increase the children's chance for success in the future ("Beit Tzipora Centers"). Regardless of Elie
Wiesel's busy schedule, he still manages to devote time to the uncountable groups of people being
oppressed.
Elie Wiesel's words have been inspirational to many people throughout the world. On December 10,
1986, Wiesel received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. In his acceptance speech, Wiesel
stated, "Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views,
that place must...become the center of the universe" ("Elie Wiesel – Acceptance Speech"). Elie

With a full basement, your foundation walls should be high enough so that you have at least seven
feet, four inches of head space in the finished basement. The finished foundation should be
waterproofed from the footing to the finish grade line. The foundation is poured, sleeves are
installed in the forms before pouring for such things as the water supply and the sewage outlet, the
pipe is placed through the hole and the space between the pipe and the wall is patched. This is the
easiest method used to get a tight, waterproof fit. .
7.) Rough–In Plumbing: (2–4 days) Once the foundation is in and backfilled and tamped and
possibly soil treated, the plumber needs to install the sewer line and water pipes that will be under
the concrete.
8.) Flatwork for Basement Floors or Garages: (3 days) The top of the slab should be at least eight
inches above the finish grade. There will be a base for the slab, gravel or crushed stone to form a
layer four to six inches in depth. If poly goes down it is just prior to pouring the concrete.
Sometimes it is recommended and expansion joints of fiber board are installed around the perimeter
Garages are subject to extreme temperature changes and concrete expands and contracts with those

Alfred Nobel is known for starting the Nobel Prize. This prize is given every year to some of the
greatest minds in the world who through their work, help to better society. In opposition to the
improvement of society, is the fact that Nobel's other known inventions brought much death and
destruction to the world (Frost). This combination of inventions helps to pose the question who was
Alfred Nobel, and why did Nobel create this prize to help the world. In this paper I will find out who
was the man behind the inventions that brought so much death and destruction to the world. I will

As Alfred Nobel grew into a young man he became well traveled, and consequently learned five
different languages fluently (Fant). In his spare time he wrote novels, poetry, and plays (Fant). As
Nobel got older, he started to help in his father's workshop. While working at the workshop Nobel
learned about and became fascinated by nitroglycerin (Frost). Nobel and his father became very
competitive in trying to find out who was better at creating a "massive explosion" (Frost). Young
Nobel finally won the competition with his father by using nitroglycerin to create a larger explosive
device (Frost). Afterwards, Alfred Nobel discovered how to utilize the power contained within the
nitroglycerin compound; however it was still a very volatile substance (Dynamite).
Nobel knew there was a huge potential for such an explosive but he needed to figure out a way to
make it safer. Nobel "worked 16 hours a day" to find out how to harness the power of this unstable
destructive substance (Dynamite). In 1864 a large amount of nitroglycerin exploded accidentally at
the factory where Nobel worked with the dangerous substance (Frost). Nobel's younger brother,
Emil, was killed in the accident. Determined to find a way to make this explosive safer to use, Nobel
returned to work the next day and worked day and night. Nobel never mentioned the accident but

She would become famous for her research on radioactivity. Marie Curie was the first woman to
ever win a Nobel prize, and the first ever to win two Nobel prizes. She is most famous for the
discovery of Radium and Polonium. Her work not only influenced the development of fundamental
science, but also began a new era in medical research and treatment.

During Marie's time, the atom was thought to be the smallest particle in existence. At first, Marie
and Pierre Curie believed that perhaps the atom was covered with cosmic rays. Marie tested
numerous elements to find if other ones than Uranium would make the air conduct electricity better.
Pierre was so interested in Marie's work, that he joined forces with her. Her research had revealed
that two uranium ores, pitchblende and chalcolite were much more radioactive that pure uranium.
Marie concluded that the highly radioactive nature of these ores may possibly be due to
undiscovered elements.
In July of 1898, Marie and Pierre Cure discovered Polonium. They named the element after Marie's
birth country, Poland. Chemically, this new element was very similar to bismuth, but it contained
radioactivity, so it must be new. In December of 1898, the Curie's discovered yet another element.
They named this one radium, from the Latin word for ray. The two new elements had completely
different chemical properties, but they both had very strong radioactivity.
It was not easy for Marie and Pierre to convince the science community of their new findings. Marie
succeeded in separating the radium from the barium, but it wasn't easy. She had to treat very large
amounts of pitchblende, but she had plenty of pitchblende to use. (The Curie's

Most patients who decide to stop taking their pills or abandon their treatment plan do not usually get
better. However, it important to note that when Nash initially stopped his treatment plan, "he
functioned relatively poorly for many years"( Leo & Torrey, 2002). In the 1980s, Nash started to
improve and "became more engaged with the world around him" ("People and Events: John Nash
(1928–)," 1999). He even received the Nobel Prize in economics in 1994, at the very ripe age of 66
("People and Events: John Nash (1928–)," 1999)! Nash is now exploring mathematics at an office in
Princeton and has remarried his wife ("People and Events: John Nash (1928–)," 1999). It is unclear
how he improved yet it is important to shy away from the idea of random miracle recoveries. Old
age tends to bring on a remission of symptoms. "Dr. Nash has not received a 'miracle cure' but rather
has had a partial remission of his symptoms related to his advancing age" (Leo & Torrey, 2002).
Furthermore, John Nash has learned to almost actively reject his hallucinations. He is quoted in "A
Straight Look at Schizophrenia," as saying, "if one makes an effort to ërationalize' one's thinking
then one can simply recognize and reject the irrational hypotheses of delusional thinking" (Keefe,
2002). It appears that his illness has left him to cope in a way that his genius mind can handle. He

Persuasive Essay About Makeup
In past times, there were few makeup products to choose from. A majority of these products were
home–made. As time has went on, more products were made as makeup and beauty products
became popular as the advertisement industry began to grow. At this point in time, many places sell
products with prices affordable up to being ridiculous prices but they are sold because of the want
for the products by many people. Advertising is everywhere; from billboards, trucks, magazines,
online apps, and the radio. In the advertisements, they include a description of what the product is
supposedly able to do to make you look "flawless" or "beautiful". The thought that you need a
beauty product to meet society's expectations is not good and can affect your self esteem especially
if the product does not even do what it was supposed to have done. In the 21st century, make up is

freckles to wearing make up for a date, costumes, holidays, going to the store, work, or even school.
Society makes it seem as if you want to be beautiful you have to have a face full of makeup and

If you would compare the number of deaths in war before and after the dynamite, you would be

world–wide. You might say that this was a positive impact but because people at that time didn't
quite understand the dynamite that this trade usually ended in death. Because shipping dynamite at
that time wasn't safe, many catastrophes happened. For example, a shipment route to California
blew up in Panama, killing 60 and causing a half–million dollars in damage. Nobel's own dynamite
factory in Hamburg, Germany, blew up leaving nothing but a shattered foundation and killing his

dynamite, thousands lost their lives, thousands lost their homes and millions lost their loved ones. It
turned Earth into a living hell. You might say that there were other weapons used but the creation of
the dynamite affected people psychologically. They started seeing an invention that can shatter a

at forefront of scientific and technological developments. After discussions with Sir John Colville
and Lord Cherwell he decided to create a thoroughly modern, science based, college at Cambridge.
However, for the sake of a balanced community, Churchill insisted that 30% of students must be
non–scientists. (One can only imagine the experiences Churchill endured to insist on this!). Since

sciences, the arts and humanities. One of the first all–male college to admit females The college was
founded in 1960 and received full college status in 1966. Churchill was in the first wave of all–male
colleges to admit female members who entered in 1972. Women now make up one third of student

Jimmy Carter Research Paper
The Nobel Peace Prize is a prize is one of the five awards created by Alfred Nobel and the peace
prize is awarded to those who "have done the most or the best work for the best for fraternity
between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of
peace congresses." (Nobel). This paper is about James Earl Carter Jr. or as others know him as the
39th president of the United States. Carter won the 2002 peace prize for promoting human rights
and peace on a global scale. Carter has empowered others around the world because he has "worked
extensively with Habitat for Humanity and founded the Carter Presidential Center to promote

Carter deserves the peace prize because during his early years he was a human rights activists
because of his acts during governor and continued during his presidency but even with that he
continued after presidency and promoted even more changes that he was recognized for. He
deserves it because Carter has brought a lot of change after his presidency and some of those
changes still happen today. Carter has built a center for human rights across the globe provided
health care for other countries and helped with issues in the middle east which is why he is
deserving of the award. Carter changed the lives of others in many ways by preventing deaths of
diseases and possible wars that could've happened like israel and egypt. their was some controversy
with Carter winning the prize and it was from George Bush but as Metro said "the prize coincided
with the then president George Bush making preparations for the invasion of Iraq." (Metro.co.uk)
this did affect Carter in a good way because others would be empowered to find a peaceful solution
like Carter would've and tried to prevent George Bush's plan for Iraq's invasion. Helping in the aid
of Carter trying to promote peace in the middle

Nobel Prize Research Paper

  • 1. Nobel Prize Research Paper Nobel Prize In this paper I am going to discuss the Nobel Prize. Firstly I will inform you of the history of the prize, secondly its origin, and how it is awarded today. After that I will discuss the 2010 Nobel Prize for Medicine, 1901 Nobel Prize for Physics, and the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Alfred Nobel The Nobel Prize was named after a Swedish inventor and industrialist, Alfred Bernhard Nobel. Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden on October 21, 1833. He was born into a wealthy family, although due to the misfortune of losing building materials on sunken barges, Immanuel Nobel, Alfred's father, was forced into bankruptcy the same year Alfred was born. In 1842 the family moved to St. Petersburg, Russia. Alfred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although he started working on IVF in the 1950s it took him about 30 years to make it successful, and about 60 years until he won the Nobel Prize. Edwards is a professor at the University of Cambridge England, he also founded Bourn Hall, the first IVF center. Today, vitro fertilization is responsible for over 4 million births worldwide. Edwards discovered that an embryo can be fertilized in a Petri dish in a laboratory ((4) http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/2010/adv.html). The steps of IVF are started by prescribing a fertility medication to control the timing of the eggs release. They monitor the ovaries using ultrasound to make sure the multiple eggs can be collected and that they are developing the eggs properly and that his is called ovulation induction. To retrieve the eggs a minor operation is required, sedation and anesthesia is used to prevent discomfort. A hollow needle is inserted through the pelvic cavity into the ovary to collect the eggs. Now the sperm is needed for completion of the procedure, this is collected by ejaculation. The process of insemination now begins; a single sperm is injected into the egg for fertilization. The egg is monitored to make sure cell division is achieved. It is now considered an embryo after it is fertilized. Three days after the egg is retrieved from the ovary, and fertilization is achieved then it is inserted into the women's uterus. The two to four cell embryos is placed ... Student's Signature Edmund Teba___________________________________ Date _05/02/2017 "I'm still turning over stones, hoping to find something new." (https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/2006/mello–bio.html); this quote verbatim from Craig Mello speak to why I was drawn to him as my selection for Nobel Prize recipient. It is a definition of the quintessence of what we have been harping about all semester; In science, chance favors the prepared mind. As with all Noble Prize recipients in science, there is no such thing as stumbling upon chance as mere happenstance; previous recipients were able to pounce upon chance by questioning current knowledge, and seeking ways to improve upon it or ... We are taking a science course as part of Liberal Arts curriculum, in order to make sense of the fact that knowledge is inherently not hermetically sealed, but an intersection of the human experience with our reality which is our world. Science is knowledge built upon objectivity, making sense of the meaning of this precarious reality by grounding it in testable parameters, hence making the meaning of our experience less tenuous. Craig Mello was born in New Haven Connecticut on October 18th 1960 to a paleontologist father James Mello, and an artist mother Sally Mello. • 5. A Brief Biography Of Dorothy Crowfoot-Hodgkin Dorothy Crowfoot–Hodgkin was born in Cairo, Egypt on May 12th, 1910 to John Winter Crowfoot and Grace Mary Crowfoot. She spent most of her high school years in North Africa, where she studied crystals and rocks. In 1937, she married Thomas Hodgkin, a son of a historian. Together they had three children and three grandchildren. Hodgkin died on July 29th, 1994 in Ilmington, United Kingdom. Hodgkin's work in x–ray crystallography assisted in determining the shape of three–dimensional structures and helped pave a path for future women chemists. Hodgkin was born on May 12th, 1910 in Cairo, Egypt to John Crowfoot and Grace Crowfoot. Her father worked in the Egyptian Education Service in Cairo, Egypt before they moved to Sudan. There, her father worked as the Director of Education and of Antiquities, but retired in 1926. However, before her father's retirement, Hodgkin visited Sudan and fell in love with the country. After retirement, her father devoted most of his time to archaeology and was Director of the British School of Archaeology located in Jerusalem. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Ignite Incur Foundations Case Summary Problem: All foundations need support in order to be viable philanthropic institutions. This support includes filing all of the paper work associated with the grants approval process, vetting the IRS standings of nonprofits before grants can be made, doing preliminary screenings of nonprofits to identify if their missions match the missions of the foundations they are attempting to solicit ect. Larger foundations (50 million dollars and over in net assets) are able to hire a fulltime staff to handle these duties. Smaller foundations (100 thousand dollars to five million dollars) often times give one of the trustee's lawyers a few extra billable hours for the lawyer to manage the foundation as there is less a smaller volume of administrative work associated with making fewer grants. Midsized foundations (5 million dollars – 50million dollars in net assets) struggle because they do not have enough administrative duties to warrant a full time salaried employee, however they are too big to be managed effectively and efficiently by a lawyer or accountant. This discrepancy can cause a lot of logistical issues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This physical space is one of the biggest overheads/ costs that Ignite incurs. • 9. Persuasive Essay: The Folly Of Big Science Awards Prizes are a big part of life, we all want to feel special and be given an award, but not all people feel the same way as you do when you get a prize. It's no different with the Nobel Prize. "All the winners of this year's Nobel Prizes deserve praise," (Prasad, 2015) but it is not always the fairest system of awarding people. The biggest complaint by the author of The Folly of Big Science Awards was that the awards were going to top notch scientists who already had fame, success, and funding for their research; while thousands of other scientists along the road get little or no credit for helping the "main" scientist out (Prasad, 2015). The author of the article made a persuasive argument because he explained everything how it needs to be heard in an unfiltered way. For example, the "Nobel Prize along with the Dickson Lasker–DeBakey, Canada Gairdner and other major awards, honors the scientists who are usually in the least need of recognition and funding, which squeezes out opportunities for other scientists" (Prasad, 2015). • 11. Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech Al Gore's speech titled "Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech" is a powerful work of literature which serves two purposes. The first purpose is stated in the title – to accept his award of the Nobel Peace Prize. The second intent he had when writing the speech was to reiterate his points that awarded him the honor in the first place. The speech explains his passion for the problem in our world that is the climate change and how much we pollute our earth. To give a short gist of what his cause was, the following quote offers much insight to the regretful aspect of our society that he is passionate about fixing. He says "So today, we dumped another 70 million tons of global–warming pollution into the thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His call to actions is for us to "choose between two futures." He goes on to explain further by challenging the reader to challenge assumption as well as repetition. Challenging us to question the repetition that would eminently happen if we don't unify and majorly change our actions. His persuasion is made very strong and hard–hitting when he says "we are standing at the most fateful fork in that path. So I want to end as I began, with a vision of two futures – each a palpable possibility – and with a prayer that we will see with vivid clarity the necessity of choosing between those two futures, and the urgency of making the right choice now." Reading this quote gives the feeling of being very inspired and feeling empowered. That being said, I feel Gore should have given more concrete action that he proposes we take. He should have said things such as we should stop allowing every person to drive a motor vehicle as much as they please. If he'd said something along those lines, it puts a specific concern in mind and helps along the putting the reality of better, healthier world into fruition. He also could have proposed that perhaps every person who owns a vehicle be required to plant a tree once a year. His speech was powerful with lots of drawing of parallels, a lot of analogies, and many accounts of making associations. While he is lacking a concrete and specific remedy for our current situation, maybe it is okay. Perhaps all we need is to see that we do have a choice in how we can influence the world, and the rest is up to us to draw from the inspiration and coordinate our own, personal next move to attain the goal that has been ... There have been a selective few who have earned the prize from brave activist, Martin Luther King Jr., to faithful, compassionate Mother Teresa. In order to be awarded with this prize, our committee believes that the candidate had made the world a better place while exhibiting the traits of wisdom, experience, and ambition. This year, I nominate Malala Yousafzai. Now, I understand that my choice may be skeptical. After all, what has this seventeen year–old done to deserve such a prize? Most of the time, teenagers are found hanging out with friends, working part–time jobs, or tweeting about the newest celebrity drama. These teenagers are not concerned about bringing peace to the world. However, I argue that Malala Yousafzai is not an average teenager. Malala Yousafzai is a young Pakistani woman, who I believe should earn the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. She fits the requirements of bringing peace and equality to the world, while demonstrating courage by fighting for girls' education. In addition, Malala faced two challenging obstacles in her life. First of all, Malala opposed the Taliban's unjust ways toward women, despite how intimidating they were. Gabriela Mistral, who would later become a Nobel Prize winner, recognized Neruda's talents by giving him books and encouragement he did not have at home. In his early teen years, he began to publish his writings under the name of what we know as "Pablo Neruda" in memory of the Czechoslovak poet, Jan Neruda, but also to avoid his father's disapproval of Neruda's interests in literature. Because of Garcia Lorca's death, Neruda joined the Republican movement, starting off in Spain then in France, Neruda worked on a collection of poems called España en el Corazón, or, Spain in our Hearts. When these poems were written, Neruda seemed to be in a very difficult place and it seemed like he would be for a very long time. For example, his poem, Cursed states, "Bring, bring the lamp, see the soaked earth, see the blackened little bone eaten by the flames, the garment of murdered Spain." Just by that excerpt, you can tell that the tone of this poem is very dark. In fact, the majority of Neruda's poems in this book seemed as if they all had the same tone; gloomy and pessimistic. His poems reflected this tone from the 1940's and onward, showing the political struggle in South America. This does show that life experiences can really affect the way that poets write. A disheartening event can lead a poet to write very depressing poems, and vice versa. Even though Neruda wrote a lot about the political struggle, he also wrote a lot of poems about love, such as, Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. One love poem that he wrote, Your Laughter, was intriguing. The poem reveals how the person in the poem is obviously struggling in life. But, the laughter of their significant other's motivates them to keep driving through whatever darkness they are going through, and keeps them happy as well. The blue light from the sky would thus be light–scattered to the sides, while the reddish light would be light that passes through the lower layers of the atmosphere and which has become impoverished in blue rays owing to scattering. Later, in 1899, Rayleigh threw out the suggestion that the phenomenon in question might be due to the fact that the molecules of air themselves exercised a scattering effect on the rays of light. In 1914 Cabannes succeeded in showing experimentally that pure and dustless gases also have the capacity of scattering rays of light. But a closer examination of scattering in different substances in solid, liquid, or gaseous form showed that the scattered light did not in certain respects exactly follow the laws which, according to calculation, should hold good for the Tyndall effect. The hypothesis which formed the basis of this effect would seem to involve, amongst other things, that the rays scattered to the sides were polarized. This, however, did not prove to be exactly the case. This divergence from what was to be expected was made the starting point of a searching study of the nature of scattered light, in which study Raman was one of those who took an active part. Consider more than just how much was raised and how many people attended – factor in how much paid staff time and volunteer time the event required. Institutional Funders There are three types of institutional funders: Corporations, Foundations, and the Government. Government funders include federal, state and local government agencies, and funding may be in the form of pass–through funds, subaward funds, or contracts and collaborative agreements. Federal grants are considered economic aid issued by the United States Government provided in order for the recipient to carry out a public purpose. There are Categorical Grants that include project grants and formula grants, Block Grants and Earmark Grants. Corporate Giving Corporate giving, also known as corporate philanthropy, refers to the act of for–profit companies donating some of their profits or resources to charity. Donations may come from the company directly, or through a separate, company–sponsored foundation.

As Alfred Nobel grew into a young man he became well traveled, and consequently learned five different languages fluently (Fant). In his spare time he wrote novels, poetry, and plays (Fant). As Nobel got older, he started to help in his father's workshop. While working at the workshop Nobel learned about and became fascinated by nitroglycerin (Frost). Nobel and his father became very competitive in trying to find out who was better at creating a "massive explosion" (Frost). Young Nobel finally won the competition with his father by using nitroglycerin to create a larger explosive device (Frost). Afterwards, Alfred Nobel discovered how to utilize the power contained within the nitroglycerin compound; however it was still a very volatile substance (Dynamite). Nobel knew there was a huge potential for such an explosive but he needed to figure out a way to make it safer. Nobel "worked 16 hours a day" to find out how to harness the power of this unstable destructive substance (Dynamite). In 1864 a large amount of nitroglycerin exploded accidentally at the factory where Nobel worked with the dangerous substance (Frost). Nobel's younger brother, Emil, was killed in the accident. At first, Marie and Pierre Curie believed that perhaps the atom was covered with cosmic rays. Marie tested numerous elements to find if other ones than Uranium would make the air conduct electricity better. Pierre was so interested in Marie's work, that he joined forces with her. Her research had revealed that two uranium ores, pitchblende and chalcolite were much more radioactive that pure uranium. Marie concluded that the highly radioactive nature of these ores may possibly be due to undiscovered elements. In July of 1898, Marie and Pierre Cure discovered Polonium. They named the element after Marie's birth country, Poland. Chemically, this new element was very similar to bismuth, but it contained radioactivity, so it must be new. In December of 1898, the Curie's discovered yet another element. They named this one radium, from the Latin word for ray. The two new elements had completely different chemical properties, but they both had very strong radioactivity. It was not easy for Marie and Pierre to convince the science community of their new findings. Marie succeeded in separating the radium from the barium, but it wasn't easy. She had to treat very large amounts of pitchblende, but she had plenty of pitchblende to use. (The Curie's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As time has went on, more products were made as makeup and beauty products became popular as the advertisement industry began to grow. At this point in time, many places sell products with prices affordable up to being ridiculous prices but they are sold because of the want for the products by many people. Advertising is everywhere; from billboards, trucks, magazines, online apps, and the radio. In the advertisements, they include a description of what the product is supposedly able to do to make you look "flawless" or "beautiful".
