An important sector of society is older adults and their various contributions to future generations.
Billy Graham's book Nearing Home: Life, Faith and Finishing Well sheds light on the various
attributes of growing old and about life in general. An important idea he expresses is the influence
older adults have on society as well as their ability to leave a spiritual legacy which is far more
important than material inheritances. I also believe that older adults are essential to society and that

He notes, peer pressure has always been around and that "the older generation should be looking for
ways to encourage the younger because they are constantly bombarded with wrong teaching, poor
examples and pressure tactics" (Graham, 2011, p. 115). Influencing the younger generations is
important but Graham emphasizes that the older generation needs to stay true to themselves and to
their faith, that in the end their authenticity will open the door to impacting younger generations.
Billy Graham (2011) considers this "a privilege" for the older generation and shows that the Bible

Recently, there has not been much written about the relationship between art and aging, or aging
artists. We face an aging population, meaning the average age is rising, and there are more elderly
people in proportion to young people. In order to better care for and understand the growing elderly
population, there must be research and advancements made in all areas pertaining to human growth,
longevity, quality of life, and wellbeing. Past research has shown that art and art related activities
are beneficial to elderly people, however this topic should be revisited in order to bring attention to
the benefits of the artistic process and encourage elderly participation.
In the sixteenth century, artists were severely limited by the effects of old age. In her article on the
effects of aging on sixteenth century artists, Erin Campbell (2002) explores the pressures placed on
artists by both physical decline and by art critics. According to Campbell (2002), the social
expectations of the time required artists to give up art as a profession; a push largely influenced by
art critics. Artists who grew old and were not hindered by the physical aspects of age and continued
to produce work for sale were heavily criticized (Campbell, 2002). Campbell (2002) provides the

Many of the elderly parents are compelled to leave their children and stay in old age homes. The old
age homes, which were a rarity, have recently spread across the country, a fact that indicates the
growing rift between the generations. It is a social expectation in India that the adult sons will take
care of their aged parents and the daughters take charge of the parents in case the parents do not
have sons (Vatuk 1980; 1981; 1990). In case the sons stay separately from each other, the aged
parents have to be under the care of one of the sons (Vatuk 1981). It is sometimes asserted that the

indicated this factor of loneliness and depression felt by the residents of old age homes. These
studies (Mishra 1993; Bagga 1997; Dandekar 1996; Nalini 1997; Chadha and Kanwar 1998; Rajan

The size of the elderly rose in absolute terms during the last century from 12 million in 1901 to
approximately 71 million in 2001 and is likely to reach 113 million in 2016. Yet another feature of
ageing in India is the fact that the proportion of elderly is much higher in the rural areas than in the
urban areas. The sex–wise pattern of growth of elderly population reveals that the increase is greater
among women in the recent past, which indicates that elderly women will outnumber elderly men in
the future.

As far as possible, elderly who are capable, should be encouraged, and if necessary, supported to be
engaged in some economically productive manner. Others who are incapable of supporting
themselves should be provided with partial or full social welfare grants that at least provide for their
basic needs. Families and communities may be encouraged to support the elderly living with them
through counseling and local self–governance.
Neglect
The elderly, especially those who are weak and/or dependent, require physical, mental and
emotional care and support. When this is not provided, they suffer from neglect, a problem that
occurs when a person is left uncared for and that is often linked with isolation. Changing lifestyles
and values, demanding jobs, distractions such as television, a shift to nuclear family structures and
redefined priorities have led to increased neglect of the elderly by families and communities. This is
worsened as the elderly are less likely to demand attention than those of other age groups.
The best way to address neglect of the elderly is to counsel families, sensitise community leaders
and address the issue at all levels in different forums, including the print and audio–visual media.
Schools and work places offer opportunities where younger generations can be addressed in groups.

Traditionally the aging process was considered as undesirable where individuals experienced decline
physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively (McGuire, Boyd & Tedrick, 1996, p. 1). As a result
of Gerontology, older age is now considered as a time of happiness, opportunity and growth
(McGuire et al., 1996, p. 2). While leisure has many meanings, it can be described as something
which can be done in an individuals spare time, is autonomous, unpaid, enjoyable, a form of play
and allows for personal growth (Argyle & Lu, 1992, p. 5). During old age, leisure plays a vital role
in an individual's life (Veal, Darcy & Lynch, 2013, p. 476). Individuals no longer have the pressure
of work, or the responsibility of children (Veal, Darcy & Lynch, 2013, p. 476). As a result they are
able to partake in engaging and stimulating activities, which maintains their quality of life (Veal et
al., 2013, p. 476). Although older adults may have more free time, when compared to younger adults
it does not always result in leisure participation. There are many social barriers, which may prevent

is really a non– profitable, helpful project for our general people.
For visiting again the campus & talk with old persons, we need permission of the Authority. For that
reason, we first approve an application by our course instructor & went to the main office of old
home (sector–9, Uttara) for seeking permission.

followed by most other western European countries. Today more than 100 nations have some form
of social security program for the aged. The United States was one of the last countries to institute

As a 51–year–old woman, I had some concerns about getting older. I used to think that old age was
knocking at my door. My body goes through things now that I don't want to except like, arthritis,

In Chapter 3 of Of Mice and Men old age and aging are depicted in two ways. Old age and aging are
primarily discussed as a burden. When the chapter begins the men are coming in from work in the
evening. All the men are conversing and getting ready to go to sleep. While preparing for bed
Carlson, begins to complain about the smell produced by Candy's dog. During this scene it is
apparent that Carlson sees old age as more of a burden. He does not see the true beauty and
sentiment behind the process. Due to these beliefs Carlson's solution is to kill Candy's dog. In the
novella when Carlson begins to complain about the dog's stench, he says, "That stink hangs around
