Gary Krist introduces Mayor Bill Thompson as "blustering, flamboyant, unscrupulous, but always
entertaining," (Krist, 31). This attitude of "sloppy and uncritical optimism" continues throughout the
book as Thompson becomes the face of Chicago during the crises of July 1919. Gary Krist was
accusatory and scathing with his tone toward Mayor Bill Thompson as Krist tried to find blame for
the crises that happened within City of Scoundrels. Krist's introduction of Mayor Thompson allows
for him to criticize any action that Mayor Thompson makes. As Krist gives background towards
Thompson's previous positions in office, he refers to Thompson's as elections as games. This gives
Thompson a boyish nature that continues throughout the book. Once Thompson became president,
Krist shows that Thompson only did his actions to gain public appeal as Krist states that "

letter as Dr. Gonzo) also fail to find the American Dream. With all its opportunities for sex, drugs,
and money, they simply can't find it, no matter how hard they try. The second failure is one on part
of Thompson; he edited the manuscript at least five or six times, destroying his goal of
"buying a big fat red notebook and writing things basically as they happened". The book
is not true gonzo journalism, as it had been tainted by editing as well as Acosta's threats of libel.
Perhaps the heart of the American Dream for these two writers is Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath

gratification, hypocrisy, greed, excess, and the belief that you need to be lucky to go from nothing to

Of the two articles we were given to read this week from the day after September 11th, 2001, I
preferred the article from the New York Times. Though the article for ESPN by Hunter Thompson
(2001) was more engaging, I could not get past statements like, "We are going to punish somebody
for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say" (para. 9).
Even though I am certainly in support of punishing those who are responsible for attacks like the
ones upon the world trade centers, but the vitriol with which Thompson describes blowing them to
smithereens made my stomach turn. As a result, I cannot say that I liked Thompson's article. I can

Human beings have passed on knowledge throughout the ages in stories. There is a reason that more
people have probably read the Illiad than straight histories of the Trojan war; we like to have a story
to think about as opposed to a fact sheet to memorize. If you can incorporate thought or fun along
with facts, it can make the learning process easier. This is something we see and tend to
acknowledge more in children though it is truthful for adults as well. Daniel Willingham (2004), a

The graphic novel Blankets, by Craig Thompson, is an emotionally charged and painfully truthful
account of the author's life as he grew from a young child through the stages of adolescence to
young adulthood. Thompson's account of his life events represents many developmental theories
and philosophies. Bronfenbrenner's theory of systems, Vygotsky's social development theory,
Marcia's theory of the identity, Arnett's theory of emerging adulthood, and Kraft's theory of the
family system are all seen throughout Craig's life. Urie Bronfenbrenner presented his theory of
ecological systems in 1979. In his theory, Bronfenbrenner claims that there are four systems that
work in concert with one another to affect the behavior of an individual (Lobb, 2016). The four
systems that Bronfenbrenner posed were the microsystem, relatable to one's home, the mesosystem,
considered one's home and school, the exosystem, which are organizations outside of school, and

development of the characters in a way a short made for Hollywood film can not. Yet it is not to the

One scene in the film in which Marianne and Elinor discuss the prospect of Edwad Ferras is handled

This is extremely relevant to the topic of the audience effect. This evidence is used to persuade us
that the audience effect does exist for the better, just like when an author posts a blog for the entire
world to view. Thompson used a survey of mathematicians about the question of multiples. He
argues that with more communication, we can use better teamwork to discover solutions more
efficiently. The respondents were asked if they did the same work as another person unknowingly.
31% agreed to this statement and noted that if they worked together, they think they would have

However, the dream is a dying one which has not materialized because of the society's greed,
selfishness and corruption as depicted in Fear and Loathing in Vegas by Thomson. Drug business,
prostitution and gambling have replaced legal businesses in Las Vegas. Law forces have been
tangled up in this game as they watch this acts being committed for a few pennies from the dealers.
The picture of a crowd of Las Vegas residence in a casino at early hours of the morning gives more
dimensions to the American dream. Emerging from a casino having won seems to epitomize what
the society feels about the American dream
Consumerism has been embraced in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is well brought out by the
two protagonists in the novel. The lifestyle of the Duke and his attorney on the journey to Las Vegas
is characterized by heavy spending on drugs, accommodation, transportation and gambling. The
writer says they had bought "two bags of grass, seventy–five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of
high–powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi–colored
uppers, downers, screamers, laughers and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of
Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls." This were hefty expenses which the writer
goes ahead to acknowledge that they did not actually need bur for the fun of it.
