Jennifer Thompson Case
On July 29, 1984 Jennifer Thompson, a white woman was brutally raped by a black male with a
knife to her throat. The black male broke into her apartment while she was asleep. Jennifer
Thompson woke up to the stranger when he had begun to attack her. When she first saw her attacker,
she offered to give him her car and money, but he declined that's when she realized he wasn't there
to rob her but to rape her. During the time Jennifer Thompson was being raped, she tried to
remember the characteristics of the black male so that later she could identify him to the police.
Jennifer Thompson was able to escape out of the back the door of her apartment and she ran to her
neighbors home which they called the police. That same night the black male raped ... Show more

didn't have the ability to perform so a private lab had to do it. However, the DNA test did get done

Bobby Poole. Poole later than confessed to both crimes that took place. Ronald Cotton was then
finally brought into the court room and all the charges against him were dropped after eleven years

J Walter Thompson Essay
J. Walter Thompson has been changing the game of marketing since 1864. J. Walter Thompson
originally started out as a marine. When he finished serving his country, Thompson was then
employed by two advertising brokerage owners to sell space in religious publications. From 1870 –
1879, the industrial revolution helped America establish a productive economy. Business owners
were able to provide readily available goods to consumers everywhere. Thompson saw this as a
window of opportunity. By 1878 Thompson made his first investment by purchasing Carlton &
Smith agency establishing a place of business for the new agency called J. Walter Thompson.
During the 1880's Thompson took another bold step. Due to the rise of innovation and rapid
industrialization, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This established the business relationship between writers and art directors, which is the common
marketing duo in todays business. Thompson was just beginning to put his company on the map. He
originated the idea of placing advertisements in magazines and publications and also marketed them
towards women. This is our first look at marketing and communication used as one. Because of his
business mindset, Thompson is referred to as "The Commodore". One of the most notable works by
the agency was the "Rock of Gibraltar" representing Prudential insurance, drawn in a way to show
that creations will stand the test of time.
The result of the Spanish–American war opened up new opportunities and markets for the agency
including global reach. "Trade follows the flag. Where trade goes, the J Walter Thompson agency is
ready to go also". By 1899 the first international ad agency was born, in London. One year later the
Commodore made another bold move. The agency landed "Peter's Chocolate account" which
eventually lead to a merger between business partners and soon Nestle was formed. The agency
made history again when it hired Helen Lansdowne as a copywriter in 1908. She would go on to
become the first female creative

On February 17, 2017 a probation warrant was issued for Michael Thompson at CC201507178 for
the instant violation offense at OTN: G 766308–4 for Possession of a Controlled Substance,
Endangering the Welfare of Children, Disorderly Conduct, Driving While Operating Privileges is

Officers Tutko and Watkins immediately noticed a strong smell of marijuana upon entry into
Michael Thompson's bedroom. Furthermore, Officers Tutko and Watkins noticed a scale placed on
the dresses located next to Michael Thompson and Kori Williams in plain view. Once again, the
Probation Department asked Michael Thompson if there was anything in the reported address that
would be a violation of his supervision. Michael Thompson stated that he had a small amount of
weed in his bedroom. Given the fact the offender was in possession of a scale, admitted to
possession of marijuana and the strong smell of marijuana within Michael Thompson's bedroom,
Supervisor McDowell gave the Probation Department permission to search the offender's reported
address of 308 B Miami Street Pittsburgh, PA 15035. PO Tutko located a large cardboard box filled
with an undetermined amount of bundles of heroin within plain on the floor inside of Michael
Thompson's bedroom closet. Not to mention the fact that the large amount of drugs was easily
accessible to the offender's 18 month old son, who also shared the same bedroom. The Probation
Department noticed a toy fire truck placed directly next to the large box filled with

Mayor Bill Thompson: Summary
Gary Krist introduces Mayor Bill Thompson as "blustering, flamboyant, unscrupulous, but always
entertaining," (Krist, 31). This attitude of "sloppy and uncritical optimism" continues throughout the
book as Thompson becomes the face of Chicago during the crises of July 1919. Gary Krist was
accusatory and scathing with his tone toward Mayor Bill Thompson as Krist tried to find blame for
the crises that happened within City of Scoundrels. Krist's introduction of Mayor Thompson allows
for him to criticize any action that Mayor Thompson makes. As Krist gives background towards
Thompson's previous positions in office, he refers to Thompson's as elections as games. This gives
Thompson a boyish nature that continues throughout the book. Once Thompson became president,
Krist shows that Thompson only did his actions to gain public appeal as Krist states that "
[Thompson loved] the applause and cheers above all else," (Krist, 22). Krist proves this when he
says, "Chicago loved him back. Not admittedly, the Chicago of college professors," (Krist, 34). This
shows that Thompson was looking for what would make the average person of Chicago love him,
not the intellectuals that knew how economic and government ... Show more content on

It's human nature to want to put blame on one person, but Thompson just showed the face of the
city. Krist admits this when he says, "[Thompson] had come to represent Chicago in the public
mind," (Krist, 31). Note that this book is just a story of what the public witnessed and was able to
see. The Thompson administration was blamed for playing politics, not Thompson while the troops
were the savior to the police that should have stopped the riots. Krist admitted that Frank Lundin
was the brains behind the Thompson administration. Krist's accusatory tone toward Thompson just
shows Chicago's real problem at hand, a lack of accountability and order in the Chicago

Horror : How A Nightmare On Elm Street Reflects The Sexual...
Feminism In Horror: How A Nightmare on Elm Street reflects the Sexual Revolution Horror has
long been about tales of heroic men fighting monsters (whether it be human or inhuman) and saving
damsels in distress. Women were mostly used as eye candy, victims of violence or only to further
the plight of the leading man. It wasn't until the 1970's that women in horror movies started to have
more power in horror movies. This was majorly due to the rise of feminism, the female protagonists
were fighting back which lead to the rise of the 'final–girl' archetype – the 'final–girl' being the only
one surviving at the end of the film having outsmarted the killer. The final girl not only promotes
feminism but also a reflection of the values in our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The year that Elm Street was created was around the time of the Sexual Revolution. The sexual
revolution occurred in the US from the 1960s to the 1980s. Sexual liberation included increased
acceptance of sex outside of traditional heterosexual, monogamous relationships (primarily
marriage). The normalization of contraception and the pill, public nudity, pornography, premarital
sex, homosexuality and alternative forms of sexuality, and the legalization of abortion all followed.
For the longest time topics such as sexuality were considered taboo. Most movies that include sex
outside of marriage portrayed it as either sinful or killed off those who participated it instilling fear
in the viewers. In Kyle Christensen's article featured in Studies in Popular Culture Vol. 34 he states
"In the original shooting script for A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Krueger was written as a
child molester. Actor Robert Englund recalls: "Wes [Craven] wrote the most evil, corrupt thing he
could think of. Originally, that meant Freddy was a child molester. Right while we were shooting...

The results that Alan Thompson was able to enact for Texaco of Canada were vast. By taking

Improved lives is what good leadership is all about. We have learned that the culminating factor that
good leader's actions result in is the improvement of lives for those around them. Externally, Alan
Thompson was able to improve the lives of his customers by extending their fleets' service periods

Clara's life had seemed as if it had begun again, in an unfamiliar way. She was the youngest of her
family and often had to entertain herself, but the sudden addition of the other families living in such
close proximity gave Clara a chance at playmates and many of them. This group of children was
considered to be good with honorable instincts, blind obedience, and kindly disposed.8 The
immensity of the land was almost too much for the children to explore but eventually, they

off infection, or illness. Thompson approached Clara's father and explained his idea's, in the hopes
of helping David and possibily curing him. David was in such torment that he would agree to
anything, even death, in order to escape the afliction. Eventually, he consented to the experimental
treatments of Dr. Thompson. Before the treatments were able to begin, David had to be transported
to a specialized facility for continuous monitoring. After only three weeks, David was scheduled to
return home and when he did, Clara and her family were astonished to see David fully recooperated.
Clara felt as though he had come back from the brink of death.13 The seclusion that Clara
experienced while nursing her brother was evident, it only intensified her timidness. With Clara's
time becoming hers' once again, she felt as though it had become strange and idle, so she often
wondered around. Some days, she would go horseback riding with her father, while others were
spent making new clothes with her mother. Clara didn't relish her newly found freedom, in fact, she
had no desire to embark on adventures with her playmates; instead, she felt as though her time was
wasted and often became anxious to find an occupation.

The American Dream in the Works of John Steinbeck and...
Two writers who come quickly to my mind whenever I hear or see images of American patriotism
are John Steinbeck and Hunter S. Thompson. As different as these two men are, their writing is
similar in that the American Dream constantly fails their characters. Both seek to define America
and the American Dream, however, it remains seemingly elusive, and both writers fail to find it.
I choose Steinbeck and Thompson because, to me, their writing styles are the same. They have the
same lust for language and powerful writing. Their subjects are contemporary; they are not
necessarily moral or upright, but are average people. Both view the world in the same sad way, that
people are as easily led to beauty as deceit, joy to sorrow and life to ... Show more content on

Personal journalism is only worth reading if something exciting or out of the ordinary happens, and
takes a certain touch. (As human beings, we tend to go for the exciting. In Travels, Steinbeck may as
well have printed how many times he changed his underwear). Travels is a failure all in itself, as
Steinbeck throws his characteristic prose out the window.
Thompson also goes on the road. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of
the American Dream, while a smashing success, is a two–fold failure. First, Thompson and his
attorney (Oscar Zeta Acosta; the attorney is never named, except, some think, in the urgent speed
letter as Dr. Gonzo) also fail to find the American Dream. With all its opportunities for sex, drugs,
and money, they simply can't find it, no matter how hard they try. The second failure is one on part
of Thompson; he edited the manuscript at least five or six times, destroying his goal of
"buying a big fat red notebook and writing things basically as they happened". The book
is not true gonzo journalism, as it had been tainted by editing as well as Acosta's threats of libel.
Perhaps the heart of the American Dream for these two writers is Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath
and Thompson's Hell's Angels and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Grapes was written near the end of the Great Depression and published in 1939. Interestingly
enough,

What Is The Spider Man?
Peter sat on the edge of a giant steel strut jutting out of what used to be the uppermost wall of
Avengers' Tower. He stared down at his hand, where the thumb and palm met, at the faint dual red
triangles that were the residual marks from the fangs of the radioactive spider that had bit him eight
months ago. He thought about how his life had changed since that fateful day at Stark Laboratories,
when he knocked over the vial containing the experimental arachnid. His red–gloved hand rubbed
his neck, and winced when his fingers touched the scabbed–over wound where the Vulture's
mechanical wing had hit him. He remembered Liz, and thought how different his life would have
been had he never become the amazing, spectacular Spider–Man.

beheaded chicken. Flash was only a typical high–school rich, smug kid; and that he was only good
at competitive sports and P.E, and Peter hoped that he would forget if the object of Flash's taunts
disappeared. As he attempted to hide behind Mr. Cobbwell and other students, he was mortified to
see Flash meander nonchalantly over to Peter. "So, Parker, you gotta crush?" Flash whispered,

Peter thought that the presumptuous son of Harrison Thompson, the successful molecular scientist,
was being serious. He grimly realized his mistake when Flash took a breath and prepare to voice
Peter's secret. "Everyone!" Flash yelled. "Puny Parker has a secret crush! Wanna know on who?"
"EUGENE!" Mr. Cobbwell reprimanded. "We are in the forum of Stark Laboratories. I'm sure you

Best Cost Focused Strategy By Thompson Et. Thompson Jr.
The competitors can try to make a distinctive product or release the improved version of the firm's
product. Extensive differentiation can have a reverse effect of losing the current customers.
Differentiation is expected to be a continuous process. The current differentiation can become
obsolete in the short run and the customer becomes more knowledgeable about the product and their
needs and perception changes. 5.3.3 Focused Strategy The third strategy in Porter's model is
Focused strategy which is applicable for the firms' that are operating in a narrow competitive scope
or Niche Market. The strategy is applied based on the market segmentation. It can be segmented
based on location, specific income group (usually high income group) or difference in the usage of
the product. The driving force of the focus strategy is specialization in dealing with a particular

The major objective of Best cost provider strategy is to give the customers value for their money.
This is an attempt to give the customers the products that exceeds their expectations at a price equal
or lesser than the competitors. When a company can build on its core competencies and give
enhanced product at a lesser price, it enjoys maximum profitability. It is hybrid model between low
cost provider and differentiation strategy. This strategy adopts the best of both the strategies .i.e.
economies in cost and at the same time differentiation in the features. This strategy works best in the
market where the characteristics of price sensitivity and diversity in buyer's preference exists. The
biggest limitation of best cost provider strategy is failing in executing the strategy and falling prey
for the limitations of both cost leadership and differentiation

The And Lady Of The Thompson 's House
The major theme in this movie is participation within change. Two works related that turns into a
great friendship among a maid named Odessa and the lady of the Thompson's house, Miriam. Both
ladies faced multiple of challenges in the era, where segregation was the ordinary way of living. In
1955, the boycott had started in Montgomery, Alabama; shortly after Rosa Parks, a second African–
American woman to be arrested due to a sitting arrangements by Jim Crow law on a public
transportation. This affected the southern part of the United States by storm. The African–Americans
sought to use this opportunity to make a change "in the pivotal case of Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896,
the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racially separate facilities, if equal, did not violate the
Constitution. Segregation, the Court said, was not discrimination." The two women had changed
their own personal views and empowered, influencing those changes amongst others. The narrator
of this story was by Miriam Thompson's daughter, Mary Catherine and she states at the beginning of
the movie, "There's always something extraordinary about someone who changes and then changes
those around her." Everyone who had participated in the boycott were uncomfortable, tired of the
normal living activities (segregation), feared of the motion about change, and had the courage to
overcome fear about change.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: Journalism with Acidic Twists Hunter S. Thompson is the literary
equivalent to the peyote shaman who document the world around them. Pioneering a genre called
gonzo journalism, Thompson spliced nonfiction with fiction while simultaneously documenting an
event in first–person. In the middle of the battlefield, up close and personal, gonzo journalism brings
the main subject of the novel directly into the heart of all events, reporting in a way that is not
entirely nonfiction. Now, if one would take that concept and drown it in LSD, ether, marijuana, a
galaxy of pills, Sin City's finest and two journalists who have taken enough drugs to shock the 60s...

Gonzo journalism typically fits to a common theme, where two inebriated people attempt to cover a
story (Colvill 31). However, with Thompsons other works, more nonfiction can typically be found.
Thompson's documentation of the gang "Hell's Angels" was very factual and in–depth, with
evidence to back up a large portion of his personal experience (Colvill 15). Fear and Loathing is
different. In "Gonzo Journalism: A Hybrid," M. Gaffney writes: "While the book is obviously not a
piece of pure journalism, it cannot be grouped with other fiction works... The fact that we do not
know how far from the truth Thompson traveled concludes that the book would have fictional
tendencies but cannot be exclusively labeled as fiction" (Gaffney 3). Another author, Steven Hoover,
writes in "Hunter S. Thompson and gonzo journalism: A research guide":
"Anyone interested in Gonzo Journalism or Thompson should read this book, ass it is his most
famous and widely–read work. Paradoxically, it is not the finest example of Gonzo Journalism, as
the book is closer to a novel than a work of journalism. Nonetheless, it is the pinnacle of the Gonzo
writing style, and is loosely based on actual events of a trip that Thompson and his lawyer, Oscar
Zeta Acosta, took to Las Vegas" (Hoover 18).
For analyzing the tone using this contextual information, one can expect the validity of the situations
to be construed while still maintaining realism. That fact coupled with the

Hunter Thompson Gonzo Journalism
The excess use of guns, booze, and too many drugs to count easily summarizes the life and writing
of Hunter S. Thompson. The American culture of the 1960s began to alter with the hippie
generation, and the same old drab writing was not fulfilling the desires of the American reader.
During the 1970s, American literature and journalism transformed in a way that no one would have
ever been able to predict. Thompson found a way to turn the tables, and effected generations to
come in a new dynamic writing style that many authors and journalist nowadays adopt. The life and
writing of Hunter S. Thompson had great influence on the creation of gonzo journalism, politics,
and American culture. Even after forty years, Hunter S. Thompson's creation of gonzo journalism
became a fashionable style of writing that remains impersonated. Gonzo journalism has numerous
different characteristics; one of the most predominant is writing as a triple–agent. To write in this
style one becomes the biographical author and a narrator at the same time. In a journal from Olga
Fayzullina she describes gonzo journalism as, "The author's position is always dual, on the one
hand, he is an observer and witness of real events, on the other hand, and he is an active participant
who shows the high degree of reflection and self–reflection." (276). Furthermore, another key to
gonzo journalism is the use of fact and fiction integrated together to portray a desired message to the
reader. The use of gonzo journalism

Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a travelogue of sorts, due to the blurred
lines between fiction and non–fiction, which deeply explores the status of the American Dream
during the early 70's, specifically 1971. Thompson states this purpose within the first three chapters
of the book in the line, "Because I want you to know that we're on our way to Las Vegas to find the
American Dream." (F&L pg 6) Although Thompson states in the beginning of the book that,
"Our trip was different. It was a classic affirmation of everything right and true and decent in the
national character. It was a gross, physical salute to the fantastic possibilities of life in this
country..." by the end of the book he comes to the conclusion ... Show more content on

Las Vegas represents the exaggerated and most extreme trends in American society, such as instant
gratification, hypocrisy, greed, excess, and the belief that you need to be lucky to go from nothing to

#2:
"Allow me to introduce myself...I'm a man of wealth and taste. Sympathy? Not for me. No mercy
for a criminal freak in Las Vegas. This place is like the army: the shark ethic prevails–eat the
wounded. In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. In a world
of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity." (F&L pg 72)
In Horatio Alger's American Dream, there is a clear hero character, who succeeds through bravery
and honest ethics. On the other hand, in Thompson's work, the people have this "shark ethic" of
feeding on the wounded or the poor, in which everyone is guilty. Instead of working hard in order to
move up in society, people resort to stealing, and taking advantage of the people below them. Even
our protagonist, Duke, has flawed ethics himself and is more of an anti–hero than a hero.

Hunter Thompson Essay
Of the two articles we were given to read this week from the day after September 11th, 2001, I
preferred the article from the New York Times. Though the article for ESPN by Hunter Thompson
(2001) was more engaging, I could not get past statements like, "We are going to punish somebody
for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say" (para. 9).
Even though I am certainly in support of punishing those who are responsible for attacks like the
ones upon the world trade centers, but the vitriol with which Thompson describes blowing them to
smithereens made my stomach turn. As a result, I cannot say that I liked Thompson's article. I can

Human beings have passed on knowledge throughout the ages in stories. There is a reason that more
people have probably read the Illiad than straight histories of the Trojan war; we like to have a story
to think about as opposed to a fact sheet to memorize. If you can incorporate thought or fun along
with facts, it can make the learning process easier. This is something we see and tend to
acknowledge more in children though it is truthful for adults as well. Daniel Willingham (2004), a
cognitive scientist, points out that research has shown "[p]eople find material presented in a story
format more engaging than if it is presented in expository text no matter what the topic" (para. 5).
Reporting in a narrative keeps the reader interested and this results in better retention of information
we were exposed to. More than likely, each of us could state more of the facts that Thompson

Hunter S. Thompson was the man responsible for what is known today as gonzo journalism. This
type of journalism is written in the first–person narrative and places the reporter in the middle of the

The My Lai Massacre : The Causes Of The Vietnam War
Racism, resentment, politics, political agendas, suffering, war, hate from people in the United States,
hate from people in Vietnam, overall anger, and a lot of weapons. These are all factors that played
into the United States being involved in one of the most horrific acts in our history. The My Lai
Massacre was a massacre by United States Soldiers that created controversy and anger throughout
the world. It leads us to the question, was this avoidable? Was one of the worst massacres in Untied
States history doomed to happen? Looking at the contents of this war, reviewing accounts from
soldiers that have fought in the war, that were there on that day, there is a strong testimony that this
massacre was indeed doomed to happen. More than five hundred people were killed during this
attack, as well as a rumored another hundred women were raped and mutilated. Why did this
happen? In class we discussed, how is this different then a bomb being dropped by a plane? That
answer is the same answer for how unavoidable this attack was. Intimacy, the intimacy of being on
the ground and fighting is what make's this massacre so vicious. A bomb dropped from a plane has a
very machine feel to it, but when you look a child in the eye before you shoot them point blank in

Marcia's theory of the identity, Arnett's theory of emerging adulthood, and Kraft's theory of the
family system are all seen throughout Craig's life. Urie Bronfenbrenner presented his theory of
ecological systems in 1979. In his theory, Bronfenbrenner claims that there are four systems that
work in concert with one another to affect the behavior of an individual (Lobb, 2016). The four
systems that Bronfenbrenner posed were the microsystem, relatable to one's home, the mesosystem,
considered one's home and school, the exosystem, which are organizations outside of school, and
the macrosystem, which involves the government. While the fourth system is not quite present in
Craig's life, the other three are readily recognizable.
As to the microsystem, it can be observed from his home life that Craig's family is of a low
socioeconomic status. Pictures from pages 10 and 11 show that Craig and his brother were forced to
share the same bed as children and that the furniture of their room, specifically the lamp seen on
page 11, was not in pristine condition. Furthering the notion that Craig's family fell within a

Essay about Persevering Literature
The novel Sense and Sensibility was truly a masterpiece. Written by Jane Austen this ironic love
story has captured the heart of readers for years. The popularity of Austen as a novelist can now be
experienced through film. This book has been adapted into various screenplays, including one by
Emma Thompson. Another version of the film was done by the BBC. Perhaps it is the manner in
which it was filmed, the character choices or other aspects of the films that make them so different.
Though they are based upon the same novel it is to be sure that the Emma Thompson version will
preserve Austen's talent in the world of film.
The Emma Thompson version can be well spoken of in that its greatest strength is its ... Show more

It is not to say that it is not an educational version. This lower budget allowed for the full
development of the characters in a way a short made for Hollywood film can not. Yet it is not to the
taste of many of those in today's audience.
One scene in the film in which Marianne and Elinor discuss the prospect of Edwad Ferras is handled
quite differently in each of the films. In Thompson's Marianne visits Elinor's bedroom as she is
settling in for the night to discuss Elinor's true feelings about her time spent with Mr. Ferras. This
scene is exciting in that it shows the girls talking quietly in the night about a rather taboo subject.
The idea that Marianne comes to Elinor's bedroom suggests the matter is of an intimate nature, as it
surely is. In the BBC version the girls are propped on a see–saw type apparatus. This suggests a type
of disagreement between the two while still maintaining an understanding. They shift their weight
and ideas back and forth while still supporting wash other. This is a more literal depiction of their
feeling about the matter.
Another notable scene is of the conversation between Fanny Dashwood and Mrs. Dashwood as to
the high hopes the family has for Edward. In the BBC there more of Fanny's cruelty is revealed
through her comments concerning the china and furniture in the house. Mrs. Dashwood's character
is developed further when she defends herself against Fanny's malice.

Thompson, in his chapter excerpt "Public Thinking," from the book Smarter Than You Think: How

This is extremely relevant to the topic of the audience effect. This evidence is used to persuade us
that the audience effect does exist for the better, just like when an author posts a blog for the entire
world to view. Thompson used a survey of mathematicians about the question of multiples. He
argues that with more communication, we can use better teamwork to discover solutions more
efficiently. The respondents were asked if they did the same work as another person unknowingly.
31% agreed to this statement and noted that if they worked together, they think they would have
completed the task more efficiently. I question its credibility because of the anonymity of the
surveyors and the ambiguity of the methods. However, I find the opinions shared by the
mathematicians very valuable because they are one of the best at what they do. I do find this
evidence sufficient because professionals were interviewed. Thompson includes this survey because
it clearly supports his claim. I find this extremely relevant to because it is about the topic of
interconnections and can be strongly, positively correlated to the lack of communication before.
Thompson uses anecdotes that are easily relatable and have a great expression of feelings. One of
them is about the experiences of Ory Okolloh, a Kenyan law student studying in the United States,

Fear, Loathing, By Hunter S. Thompson 's Novel, Fear And...
The American Dream is the phrase and trademark of American society today that many hope to
achieve in some point in their lives. In Hunter S. Thompson's novel, Fear and Loathing in Las
Vegas, readers follow Thompson depicted as Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo in hoping to
find the American Dream. It uses Gonzo Journalism, a style that is an adaption of Picaresque
narrative to document his drug–induced experiences traveling through 1970's Las Vegas. The
Picaresque novels are composed of first–person narrative that relates to the adventures of a picaro
character or rogue hero with an episodic structure and romantic techniques to present the story as a
realist. The novel presents various examples of picaresque genre and American journey narratives.
Thompson uses picaresque narrative of a rogue hero's desert journey for the American Dream in
bars, casinos, hotels only to find that it is essentially unattainable. At the same time, Thompsons
examines the generation's failure to achieve the American Dream by commenting on their cultural
behavior in the 1960s and 1970s.
The principles of Picaresque genre are revealed throughout the novel: first person narrative and
episodic structure of a rogue hero. Thompson portrays an episodic plot in the novel where the rogue
hero travels back and forth in search of the American Dream. Duke and his attorney drive their red
convertible across the deserts of Las Vegas. As their drug consumption increases, they trash their
hotel room and

the tournament when Kournikova could not reach her mother with her unbranded cell phone,
Motorola had the idea of sponsoring Kournikova. I personally believe that this was a great idea. It

typically being regarded as some of the more attractive people in the public eye. Despite the efforts
of her team, Kournikova was more renowned for her beauty than her tennis game. 3. How can we
describe the "brand" Sharapova? Explain. The brand Sharapova can be described as beauty, strength,
hard work, and perseverance. To me, Maria represented the "American dream". Her parents came to
America with no money, and she became one of the biggest stars in the world. Things were not
handed to her and she understood from a young age that the only way to make it in sports was hard
work and dedication. She represented a younger generation that did not quite understand that. She

Karen Thompson Walker, an aspiring fiction writer and novelist, delivered an imaginative Ted Talk

storytelling. In this critique I will analyze Walker's content, delivery, and conclusion of her speech.
Karen Thompson Walker based the idea of her story on comparing fear and storytelling. She wanted
to reach out to adults on how we feel about fear and how we can perceive fear to be an amazing
feeling. Walker opened her speech with an effective introduction. She opened her speech her speech

She made it easy to recognize that she was coming to the end of her speech by lowering the volume
of her voice . She restated her points at the end of the speech referencing back to her story. Walker
made her main points more prominent toward the end of her speech than when she stated them at the
beginning. The main point of Walker's speech was that we should look at our fears as books then we
could be our own authors. After I listened to her her conclusion I felt that it made her point and her
conclusion more precise. In conclusion, I think that Karen Thompson Walker did a great job with
her speech. She did well with the content, delivery, and conclusion of her speech. She did have some
areas that I would recommend slight improvement. Karen opened her speech with a short story that
grabbed her audience's attention from the beginning to the end. She made me want to listen a
wonder what would happen next. I think that she added a bit more excitement to her voice and came
from behind the podium when ending her speech. Given these points even though Karen Thompson
Walker could use some improvement, but we all need improvement to become better public

Graphic Designer: Bradbury Thompson

Patrick Kirk
ARTD 201
Due: March 28, 2007 Bradbury Thompson (1911 – 1995) is often times called the "father of
modern design" and considered a pioneer among graphic designers (Father). As early as high school,
Bradbury showed a keen talent in the field of graphic design. He jumpstarted his career when
working in New York; and from that point he undertook many projects that made him famous.
Among those projects includes designing stamps for the postal office, redesigning World Book
Encyclopedia, Chicago Daily News, and even the Holy Bible. His work was not overlooked and

project, the bible was published and placed on the market. The Bible was a huge success and
collected several awards and publications (Hoffman). In 1980 a second version was published. This
second version was smaller and was targeted to sell to families. Of course Bradbury 's success was
not overlooked. In 1950, Bradbury received the National Society of Art Directors of the Year award.
In 1975 he received AIGA Gold Medal award. And finally, in 1977 Bradbury was placed into the Art
Director 's Hall of Fame (Pioneer). As for my personal thoughts; besides being extremely impressed
by Bradbury Thompson 's success I find it very interesting as to how broad his different work
reached. It really goes to show that graphic design can lead one to several different types of work.
After reading up on Bradbury Thompson I can only be overtaken by motivation and excitement in
hoping that my career can lead me to as many exciting projects and places as Bradbury Thompson 's
did. As for Bradbury 's work, he truly makes several masterpieces and deserves all the respect,
awards, and recognition. He does very well at expressing meaningful concepts. I also greatly
appreciate his interest in making the English language easier to understand and read. I am interested

Analysis Of Fear And Loathing By Hunter S. Thompson
In Fear and Loathing by Hunter S. Thompson money and credit cards played a major role during Dr.
Gonzo and Duke's stay at Las Vegas. Money not only helped them to fulfill their needs but also
reflects their status. Money in cash and credit form made their journey luxuries and respectful as
they got ceased from many problems caused by their inappropriate behaviour.
In the beginning, itself they got red convertible and bought lot of drugs to make their journey
adventurous. The Magazine that sent them to cover the motorcyclist race at Las Vegas offered Duke
a $300 for the trip expenses whereas Duke ended up buying drugs. This shows their adventure was
all about the presence of money to buy illegal drugs and get involved in illegal practices.
During the trip, they went to Casinos and became a part of gambling. The visits to the bars and pubs
was common part of their journey. The possession of cards and cash saved them from many

Scott Thompson Case
Case Summary
It is hard to fathom in a time when a quick Google search can elicit details about nearly anyone that
people continue to fabricate, omit, or falsify information on their resumé or job application.
However, complete another search on high–profile resumé fraud and one will learn this type of
fraud continues to be prevalent, even among those occupying the C–Suite. The case asks the reader
to explore the ethics along the continuum of white lies to more serious fraudulent statements and
decide if it matters, particularly if the person can perform his or her job duties. While many job
applicants have something they might prefer to omit or inflate in importance on their application,
this can create serious consequences for the applicant, both professionally and legally.

Abortion is highly controversial and there is quite the debate over the ethics of abortion. The
question is does the fetus have the same rights as an adult, so that it has the same right to not be

no life related to a fetus then they believe that it has no rights. On the flip side, others may argue that
abortion is the killing of an innocent human life. The question, "When does life begin?" appears
over and over again throughout these debates and within cultures.Thompson believes that the

Servant Leadership Thompson
Samantha, I think that at some time everyone has encouraged or talked with someone else about
which path they should follow, whether it should be one of a career, or a vocation. In dealing with

be with a certain career, or whether they have the means to follow their own heart as in choosing a
vocation. Using these criteria, I would probably do things a little differently, considering what I now
understand about servant leadership. In the scenario present by Thompson about Annie (Thompson,

Analysis of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S....
Literature is considered a mirror of the society. The pool of content in literary writing stems from
the environment in which the writer is placed. A writer will use this environment to advance his/her
views of the society and at the same time drive into the audience/readers important information that
he/she wishes to pass. Hunter S. Thompson has used his creativity in the novel Fear and Loathing in
Las Vegas written in the 1960s to reflect on American society with Las Vegas as the point of
reference.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas describes the American society as hypocritical. This transcends
from the leaders to citizens. The Duke and Gonzo attend a conference on Narcotics and dangerous
drugs. The theme of the conference is slated as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the dream is a dying one which has not materialized because of the society's greed,
selfishness and corruption as depicted in Fear and Loathing in Vegas by Thomson. Drug business,
prostitution and gambling have replaced legal businesses in Las Vegas. Law forces have been
tangled up in this game as they watch this acts being committed for a few pennies from the dealers.
The picture of a crowd of Las Vegas residence in a casino at early hours of the morning gives more
dimensions to the American dream. Emerging from a casino having won seems to epitomize what
the society feels about the American dream
Consumerism has been embraced in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is well brought out by the
two protagonists in the novel. The lifestyle of the Duke and his attorney on the journey to Las Vegas
is characterized by heavy spending on drugs, accommodation, transportation and gambling. The
writer says they had bought "two bags of grass, seventy–five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of
high–powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi–colored
uppers, downers, screamers, laughers and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of
Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls." This were hefty expenses which the writer
goes ahead to acknowledge that they did not actually need bur for the fun of it.

Jennifer Thompson Case

  • 1. Jennifer Thompson Case On July 29, 1984 Jennifer Thompson, a white woman was brutally raped by a black male with a knife to her throat. The black male broke into her apartment while she was asleep. Jennifer Thompson woke up to the stranger when he had begun to attack her. When she first saw her attacker, she offered to give him her car and money, but he declined that's when she realized he wasn't there to rob her but to rape her. During the time Jennifer Thompson was being raped, she tried to remember the characteristics of the black male so that later she could identify him to the police. Jennifer Thompson was able to escape out of the back the door of her apartment and she ran to her neighbors home which they called the police. That same night the black male raped ... Cotton then confronted his lawyers about getting a DNA test which the State Bureau Investigation didn't have the ability to perform so a private lab had to do it. However, the DNA test did get done and it showed that Cotton was not a match. The DNA found in the second victim rape kit matched Bobby Poole. Poole later than confessed to both crimes that took place. • 5. J Walter Thompson Essay J. Walter Thompson has been changing the game of marketing since 1864. J. Walter Thompson originally started out as a marine. When he finished serving his country, Thompson was then employed by two advertising brokerage owners to sell space in religious publications. From 1870 – 1879, the industrial revolution helped America establish a productive economy. Business owners were able to provide readily available goods to consumers everywhere. Thompson saw this as a window of opportunity. By 1878 Thompson made his first investment by purchasing Carlton & Smith agency establishing a place of business for the new agency called J. Walter Thompson. During the 1880's Thompson took another bold step. Due to the rise of innovation and rapid industrialization, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This established the business relationship between writers and art directors, which is the common marketing duo in todays business. Thompson was just beginning to put his company on the map. He originated the idea of placing advertisements in magazines and publications and also marketed them towards women. This is our first look at marketing and communication used as one. Because of his business mindset, Thompson is referred to as "The Commodore". One of the most notable works by the agency was the "Rock of Gibraltar" representing Prudential insurance, drawn in a way to show that creations will stand the test of time. The result of the Spanish–American war opened up new opportunities and markets for the agency including global reach. "Trade follows the flag. Where trade goes, the J Walter Thompson agency is ready to go also". By 1899 the first international ad agency was born, in London. One year later the Commodore made another bold move. The agency landed "Peter's Chocolate account" which eventually lead to a merger between business partners and soon Nestle was formed. The agency made history again when it hired Helen Lansdowne as a copywriter in 1908. She would go on to become the first female creative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Michael Thompson Case On February 17, 2017 a probation warrant was issued for Michael Thompson at CC201507178 for the instant violation offense at OTN: G 766308–4 for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Endangering the Welfare of Children, Disorderly Conduct, Driving While Operating Privileges is Suspended or Revoked and Possession of Drug. Given these points, the Probation Department met with the Chief of East McKeesport Police Department and formulated a plan to arrest Michael Thompson at his reported address of 308 B Miami Street Pittsburgh, PA 15035, on the outstanding warrants. The Probation Department and East McKeesport were able to take Michel Thompson into custody without incident after being granted entry into his reported address of 308 B Miami ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Officers Tutko and Watkins immediately noticed a strong smell of marijuana upon entry into Michael Thompson's bedroom. Furthermore, Officers Tutko and Watkins noticed a scale placed on the dresses located next to Michael Thompson and Kori Williams in plain view. Once again, the Probation Department asked Michael Thompson if there was anything in the reported address that would be a violation of his supervision. Michael Thompson stated that he had a small amount of weed in his bedroom. Given the fact the offender was in possession of a scale, admitted to possession of marijuana and the strong smell of marijuana within Michael Thompson's bedroom, Supervisor McDowell gave the Probation Department permission to search the offender's reported address of 308 B Miami Street Pittsburgh, PA 15035. PO Tutko located a large cardboard box filled with an undetermined amount of bundles of heroin within plain on the floor inside of Michael Thompson's bedroom closet. Not to mention the fact that the large amount of drugs was easily accessible to the offender's 18 month old son, who also shared the same bedroom. • 13. Mayor Bill Thompson: Summary Gary Krist introduces Mayor Bill Thompson as "blustering, flamboyant, unscrupulous, but always entertaining," (Krist, 31). This attitude of "sloppy and uncritical optimism" continues throughout the book as Thompson becomes the face of Chicago during the crises of July 1919. Gary Krist was accusatory and scathing with his tone toward Mayor Bill Thompson as Krist tried to find blame for the crises that happened within City of Scoundrels. Krist's introduction of Mayor Thompson allows for him to criticize any action that Mayor Thompson makes. As Krist gives background towards Thompson's previous positions in office, he refers to Thompson's as elections as games. This gives Thompson a boyish nature that continues throughout the book. Once Thompson became president, Krist shows that Thompson only did his actions to gain public appeal as Krist states that " [Thompson loved] the applause and cheers above all else," (Krist, 22). Krist proves this when he says, "Chicago loved him back. Not admittedly, the Chicago of college professors," (Krist, 34). This shows that Thompson was looking for what would make the average person of Chicago love him, not the intellectuals that knew how economic and government ... Krist admits this when he says, "[Thompson] had come to represent Chicago in the public mind," (Krist, 31). Note that this book is just a story of what the public witnessed and was able to see. The Thompson administration was blamed for playing politics, not Thompson while the troops were the savior to the police that should have stopped the riots. Krist admitted that Frank Lundin was the brains behind the Thompson administration. Feminism In Horror: How A Nightmare on Elm Street reflects the Sexual Revolution Horror has long been about tales of heroic men fighting monsters (whether it be human or inhuman) and saving damsels in distress. Women were mostly used as eye candy, victims of violence or only to further the plight of the leading man. It wasn't until the 1970's that women in horror movies started to have more power in horror movies. This was majorly due to the rise of feminism, the female protagonists were fighting back which lead to the rise of the 'final–girl' archetype – the 'final–girl' being the only one surviving at the end of the film having outsmarted the killer. The final girl not only promotes feminism but also a reflection of the values in our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The year that Elm Street was created was around the time of the Sexual Revolution. The sexual revolution occurred in the US from the 1960s to the 1980s. Sexual liberation included increased acceptance of sex outside of traditional heterosexual, monogamous relationships (primarily marriage). The normalization of contraception and the pill, public nudity, pornography, premarital sex, homosexuality and alternative forms of sexuality, and the legalization of abortion all followed. For the longest time topics such as sexuality were considered taboo. Most movies that include sex outside of marriage portrayed it as either sinful or killed off those who participated it instilling fear in the viewers. In Kyle Christensen's article featured in Studies in Popular Culture Vol. 34 he states "In the original shooting script for A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Krueger was written as a child molester. Actor Robert Englund recalls: "Wes [Craven] wrote the most evil, corrupt thing he could think of. Originally, that meant Freddy was a child molester. She was the youngest of her family and often had to entertain herself, but the sudden addition of the other families living in such close proximity gave Clara a chance at playmates and many of them. This group of children was considered to be good with honorable instincts, blind obedience, and kindly disposed.8 The immensity of the land was almost too much for the children to explore but eventually, they accomplished in getting to know every aspect of the property. The land consisted of three hundred acres, but these children knew it all; from "peaked hill" to "Jim Brown's". Thompson approached Clara's father and explained his idea's, in the hopes of helping David and possibily curing him. David was in such torment that he would agree to anything, even death, in order to escape the afliction. Eventually, he consented to the experimental treatments of Dr. Thompson. Before the treatments were able to begin, David had to be transported to a specialized facility for continuous monitoring. After only three weeks, David was scheduled to return home and when he did, Clara and her family were astonished to see David fully recooperated. Clara felt as though he had come back from the brink of death.13 The seclusion that Clara experienced while nursing her brother was evident, it only intensified her timidness. With Clara's time becoming hers' once again, she felt as though it had become strange and idle, so she often wondered around. Some days, she would go horseback riding with her father, while others were spent making new clothes with her mother. Clara didn't relish her newly found freedom, in fact, she had no desire to embark on adventures with her playmates; instead, she felt as though her time was wasted and often became anxious to find an occupation. ... • 29. The American Dream in the Works of John Steinbeck and... Two writers who come quickly to my mind whenever I hear or see images of American patriotism are John Steinbeck and Hunter S. Thompson. As different as these two men are, their writing is similar in that the American Dream constantly fails their characters. Both seek to define America and the American Dream, however, it remains seemingly elusive, and both writers fail to find it. I choose Steinbeck and Thompson because, to me, their writing styles are the same. They have the same lust for language and powerful writing. Their subjects are contemporary; they are not necessarily moral or upright, but are average people. Both view the world in the same sad way, that people are as easily led to beauty as deceit, joy to sorrow and life to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Personal journalism is only worth reading if something exciting or out of the ordinary happens, and takes a certain touch. (As human beings, we tend to go for the exciting. In Travels, Steinbeck may as well have printed how many times he changed his underwear). Travels is a failure all in itself, as Steinbeck throws his characteristic prose out the window. Thompson also goes on the road. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, while a smashing success, is a two–fold failure. First, Thompson and his attorney (Oscar Zeta Acosta; the attorney is never named, except, some think, in the urgent speed letter as Dr. Gonzo) also fail to find the American Dream. With all its opportunities for sex, drugs, and money, they simply can't find it, no matter how hard they try. The second failure is one on part of Thompson; he edited the manuscript at least five or six times, destroying his goal of "buying a big fat red notebook and writing things basically as they happened". The book is not true gonzo journalism, as it had been tainted by editing as well as Acosta's threats of libel. Perhaps the heart of the American Dream for these two writers is Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and Thompson's Hell's Angels and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Grapes was written near the end of the Great Depression and published in 1939. Interestingly enough, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. What Is The Spider Man? Peter sat on the edge of a giant steel strut jutting out of what used to be the uppermost wall of Avengers' Tower. He stared down at his hand, where the thumb and palm met, at the faint dual red triangles that were the residual marks from the fangs of the radioactive spider that had bit him eight months ago. He thought about how his life had changed since that fateful day at Stark Laboratories, when he knocked over the vial containing the experimental arachnid. His red–gloved hand rubbed his neck, and winced when his fingers touched the scabbed–over wound where the Vulture's mechanical wing had hit him. He remembered Liz, and thought how different his life would have been had he never become the amazing, spectacular Spider–Man. *** Peter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eugene Thompson, generally known as "Flash," smirked mockingly and raised his eyes suggestively at Peter. Peter tried to roll his eyes indifferently and saunter off, although it actually looked more like the rushed walk of a beheaded chicken. Flash was only a typical high–school rich, smug kid; and that he was only good at competitive sports and P.E, and Peter hoped that he would forget if the object of Flash's taunts disappeared. As he attempted to hide behind Mr. Cobbwell and other students, he was mortified to see Flash meander nonchalantly over to Peter. "So, Parker, you gotta crush?" Flash whispered, appearing to be a friendly confidant. "On Liz, no less. You've got good taste!" For a split second, Peter thought that the presumptuous son of Harrison Thompson, the successful molecular scientist, was being serious. He grimly realized his mistake when Flash took a breath and prepare to voice Peter's secret. "Everyone!" Flash yelled. "Puny Parker has a secret crush! Wanna know on who?" "EUGENE!" • 41. Best Cost Focused Strategy By Thompson Et. Thompson Jr. The competitors can try to make a distinctive product or release the improved version of the firm's product. Extensive differentiation can have a reverse effect of losing the current customers. Differentiation is expected to be a continuous process. The current differentiation can become obsolete in the short run and the customer becomes more knowledgeable about the product and their needs and perception changes. 5.3.3 Focused Strategy The third strategy in Porter's model is Focused strategy which is applicable for the firms' that are operating in a narrow competitive scope or Niche Market. The strategy is applied based on the market segmentation. It can be segmented based on location, specific income group (usually high income group) or difference in the usage of the product. The driving force of the focus strategy is specialization in dealing with a particular markets needs and preferences which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The major objective of Best cost provider strategy is to give the customers value for their money. This is an attempt to give the customers the products that exceeds their expectations at a price equal or lesser than the competitors. When a company can build on its core competencies and give enhanced product at a lesser price, it enjoys maximum profitability. It is hybrid model between low cost provider and differentiation strategy. This strategy adopts the best of both the strategies .i.e. economies in cost and at the same time differentiation in the features. This strategy works best in the market where the characteristics of price sensitivity and diversity in buyer's preference exists. Two works related that turns into a great friendship among a maid named Odessa and the lady of the Thompson's house, Miriam. In 1955, the boycott had started in Montgomery, Alabama; shortly after Rosa Parks, a second African– American woman to be arrested due to a sitting arrangements by Jim Crow law on a public transportation. This affected the southern part of the United States by storm. The African–Americans sought to use this opportunity to make a change "in the pivotal case of Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racially separate facilities, if equal, did not violate the Constitution. Segregation, the Court said, was not discrimination." The two women had changed their own personal views and empowered, influencing those changes amongst others. The narrator of this story was by Miriam Thompson's daughter, Mary Catherine and she states at the beginning of the movie, "There's always something extraordinary about someone who changes and then changes those around her." Everyone who had participated in the boycott were uncomfortable, tired of the normal living activities (segregation), feared of the motion about change, and had the courage to overcome fear about change. • 49. Fear And Loathing Of Las Vegas : Journalism With Acidic... Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: Journalism with Acidic Twists Hunter S. Thompson is the literary equivalent to the peyote shaman who document the world around them. Pioneering a genre called gonzo journalism, Thompson spliced nonfiction with fiction while simultaneously documenting an event in first–person. In the middle of the battlefield, up close and personal, gonzo journalism brings the main subject of the novel directly into the heart of all events, reporting in a way that is not entirely nonfiction. Now, if one would take that concept and drown it in LSD, ether, marijuana, a galaxy of pills, Sin City's finest and two journalists who have taken enough drugs to shock the 60s... then they would have Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gonzo journalism typically fits to a common theme, where two inebriated people attempt to cover a story (Colvill 31). However, with Thompsons other works, more nonfiction can typically be found. Thompson's documentation of the gang "Hell's Angels" was very factual and in–depth, with evidence to back up a large portion of his personal experience (Colvill 15). Fear and Loathing is different. In "Gonzo Journalism: A Hybrid," M. Gaffney writes: "While the book is obviously not a piece of pure journalism, it cannot be grouped with other fiction works... The fact that we do not know how far from the truth Thompson traveled concludes that the book would have fictional tendencies but cannot be exclusively labeled as fiction" (Gaffney 3). Another author, Steven Hoover, writes in "Hunter S. Thompson and gonzo journalism: A research guide": "Anyone interested in Gonzo Journalism or Thompson should read this book, ass it is his most famous and widely–read work. Paradoxically, it is not the finest example of Gonzo Journalism, as the book is closer to a novel than a work of journalism. Nonetheless, it is the pinnacle of the Gonzo writing style, and is loosely based on actual events of a trip that Thompson and his lawyer, Oscar Zeta Acosta, took to Las Vegas" (Hoover 18). For analyzing the tone using this contextual information, one can expect the validity of the situations to be construed while still maintaining realism. That fact coupled with the ... • 53. Hunter Thompson Gonzo Journalism The excess use of guns, booze, and too many drugs to count easily summarizes the life and writing of Hunter S. Thompson. The American culture of the 1960s began to alter with the hippie generation, and the same old drab writing was not fulfilling the desires of the American reader. During the 1970s, American literature and journalism transformed in a way that no one would have ever been able to predict. Thompson found a way to turn the tables, and effected generations to come in a new dynamic writing style that many authors and journalist nowadays adopt. The life and writing of Hunter S. Thompson had great influence on the creation of gonzo journalism, politics, and American culture. Even after forty years, Hunter S. Thompson's creation of gonzo journalism became a fashionable style of writing that remains impersonated. Gonzo journalism has numerous different characteristics; one of the most predominant is writing as a triple–agent. To write in this style one becomes the biographical author and a narrator at the same time. In a journal from Olga Fayzullina she describes gonzo journalism as, "The author's position is always dual, on the one hand, he is an observer and witness of real events, on the other hand, and he is an active participant who shows the high degree of reflection and self–reflection." (276). Furthermore, another key to gonzo journalism is the use of fact and fiction integrated together to portray a desired message to the reader. The use of gonzo journalism ... Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a travelogue of sorts, due to the blurred lines between fiction and non–fiction, which deeply explores the status of the American Dream during the early 70's, specifically 1971. Thompson states this purpose within the first three chapters of the book in the line, "Because I want you to know that we're on our way to Las Vegas to find the American Dream." (F&L pg 6) Although Thompson states in the beginning of the book that, "Our trip was different. It was a classic affirmation of everything right and true and decent in the national character. Las Vegas represents the exaggerated and most extreme trends in American society, such as instant gratification, hypocrisy, greed, excess, and the belief that you need to be lucky to go from nothing to something, while New York represents the ideals of moving up in society, charm, and opportunity. #2: "Allow me to introduce myself...I'm a man of wealth and taste. Sympathy? Not for me. No mercy for a criminal freak in Las Vegas. This place is like the army: the shark ethic prevails–eat the wounded. In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. In a world of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity." (F&L pg 72) In Horatio Alger's American Dream, there is a clear hero character, who succeeds through bravery and honest ethics. On the other hand, in Thompson's work, the people have this "shark ethic" of feeding on the wounded or the poor, in which everyone is guilty. Instead of working hard in order to move up in society, people resort to stealing, and taking advantage of the people below them. Even our protagonist, Duke, has flawed ethics himself and is more of an anti–hero than a hero. #3: "Especially here in our own country–in this doomstruck era of Nixon. • 61. Hunter Thompson Essay Of the two articles we were given to read this week from the day after September 11th, 2001, I preferred the article from the New York Times. Though the article for ESPN by Hunter Thompson (2001) was more engaging, I could not get past statements like, "We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say" (para. 9). Even though I am certainly in support of punishing those who are responsible for attacks like the ones upon the world trade centers, but the vitriol with which Thompson describes blowing them to smithereens made my stomach turn. As a result, I cannot say that I liked Thompson's article. I can say that Thompson's article did a better job of keeping my attention. A large portion of the New York Times reporting from Litsky and Williams (2001) was a listing of cancelled events which, while informative, is just not very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Human beings have passed on knowledge throughout the ages in stories. There is a reason that more people have probably read the Illiad than straight histories of the Trojan war; we like to have a story to think about as opposed to a fact sheet to memorize. If you can incorporate thought or fun along with facts, it can make the learning process easier. This is something we see and tend to acknowledge more in children though it is truthful for adults as well. Daniel Willingham (2004), a cognitive scientist, points out that research has shown "[p]eople find material presented in a story format more engaging than if it is presented in expository text no matter what the topic" (para. 5). This type of journalism is written in the first–person narrative and places the reporter in the middle of the action, allowing for personal experiences, emotions, and biases in a way that defies traditional journalism. Thompson's subversive style of journalism was so radical that according to Jennifer Marinelli's (2010) post on the Michigan Online News Association, "Thompson didn't just create a new form of journalism. These are all factors that played into the United States being involved in one of the most horrific acts in our history. The My Lai Massacre was a massacre by United States Soldiers that created controversy and anger throughout the world. It leads us to the question, was this avoidable? Was one of the worst massacres in Untied States history doomed to happen? Looking at the contents of this war, reviewing accounts from soldiers that have fought in the war, that were there on that day, there is a strong testimony that this massacre was indeed doomed to happen. More than five hundred people were killed during this attack, as well as a rumored another hundred women were raped and mutilated. Why did this happen? In class we discussed, how is this different then a bomb being dropped by a plane? That answer is the same answer for how unavoidable this attack was. Intimacy, the intimacy of being on the ground and fighting is what make's this massacre so vicious. A bomb dropped from a plane has a very machine feel to it, but when you look a child in the eye before you shoot them point blank in the head it sends another message, a murderous message. • 81. Blankets, By Craig Thompson The graphic novel Blankets, by Craig Thompson, is an emotionally charged and painfully truthful account of the author's life as he grew from a young child through the stages of adolescence to young adulthood. Thompson's account of his life events represents many developmental theories and philosophies. Bronfenbrenner's theory of systems, Vygotsky's social development theory, Marcia's theory of the identity, Arnett's theory of emerging adulthood, and Kraft's theory of the family system are all seen throughout Craig's life. Urie Bronfenbrenner presented his theory of ecological systems in 1979. In his theory, Bronfenbrenner claims that there are four systems that work in concert with one another to affect the behavior of an individual (Lobb, 2016). The four systems that Bronfenbrenner posed were the microsystem, relatable to one's home, the mesosystem, considered one's home and school, the exosystem, which are organizations outside of school, and the macrosystem, which involves the government. While the fourth system is not quite present in Craig's life, the other three are readily recognizable. As to the microsystem, it can be observed from his home life that Craig's family is of a low socioeconomic status. Pictures from pages 10 and 11 show that Craig and his brother were forced to share the same bed as children and that the furniture of their room, specifically the lamp seen on page 11, was not in pristine condition. The popularity of Austen as a novelist can now be experienced through film. This book has been adapted into various screenplays, including one by Emma Thompson. Another version of the film was done by the BBC. Perhaps it is the manner in which it was filmed, the character choices or other aspects of the films that make them so different. In Thompson's Marianne visits Elinor's bedroom as she is settling in for the night to discuss Elinor's true feelings about her time spent with Mr. Ferras. This scene is exciting in that it shows the girls talking quietly in the night about a rather taboo subject. The idea that Marianne comes to Elinor's bedroom suggests the matter is of an intimate nature, as it surely is. In the BBC version the girls are propped on a see–saw type apparatus. This suggests a type of disagreement between the two while still maintaining an understanding. They shift their weight and ideas back and forth while still supporting wash other. This is a more literal depiction of their feeling about the matter. Another notable scene is of the conversation between Fanny Dashwood and Mrs. Dashwood as to the high hopes the family has for Edward. In the BBC there more of Fanny's cruelty is revealed through her comments concerning the china and furniture in the house. In Hunter S. Thompson's novel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, readers follow Thompson depicted as Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo in hoping to find the American Dream. It uses Gonzo Journalism, a style that is an adaption of Picaresque narrative to document his drug–induced experiences traveling through 1970's Las Vegas. The Picaresque novels are composed of first–person narrative that relates to the adventures of a picaro character or rogue hero with an episodic structure and romantic techniques to present the story as a realist. The novel presents various examples of picaresque genre and American journey narratives. Thompson uses picaresque narrative of a rogue hero's desert journey for the American Dream in bars, casinos, hotels only to find that it is essentially unattainable. At the same time, Thompsons examines the generation's failure to achieve the American Dream by commenting on their cultural behavior in the 1960s and 1970s. The principles of Picaresque genre are revealed throughout the novel: first person narrative and episodic structure of a rogue hero. • 121. Analysis Of Fear And Loathing By Hunter S. Thompson In Fear and Loathing by Hunter S. Thompson money and credit cards played a major role during Dr. Gonzo and Duke's stay at Las Vegas. Money not only helped them to fulfill their needs but also reflects their status. Money in cash and credit form made their journey luxuries and respectful as they got ceased from many problems caused by their inappropriate behaviour. In the beginning, itself they got red convertible and bought lot of drugs to make their journey adventurous. The Magazine that sent them to cover the motorcyclist race at Las Vegas offered Duke a $300 for the trip expenses whereas Duke ended up buying drugs. This shows their adventure was all about the presence of money to buy illegal drugs and get involved in illegal practices. During the trip, they went to Casinos and became a part of gambling. The visits to the bars and pubs was common part of their journey. The possession of cards and cash saved them from many problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 125. Scott Thompson Case Case Summary It is hard to fathom in a time when a quick Google search can elicit details about nearly anyone that people continue to fabricate, omit, or falsify information on their resumé or job application. However, complete another search on high–profile resumé fraud and one will learn this type of fraud continues to be prevalent, even among those occupying the C–Suite. The case asks the reader to explore the ethics along the continuum of white lies to more serious fraudulent statements and decide if it matters, particularly if the person can perform his or her job duties. While many job applicants have something they might prefer to omit or inflate in importance on their application, this can create serious consequences for the applicant, both professionally and legally. Critical Thinking The Effects of Fraud on Organizations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, the Thompson case was not an outlier, as the practice of fabricating or padding a resumé is widespread. According to Berman–Gorvine (2014), of 619,000 educational verifications completed in a 12–month period, 32 percent had discrepancies, most commonly involving false education claims. While it is understandable how a media–driven, high–profile case such as that of Thompson caused organizational disruption, the unpublicized fraud cases are just as demoralizing for an organization. While a slight fabrication might seem trivial in an otherwise qualified candidate, it is the duty of HR to reject applicants misrepresenting themselves to mitigate the risk of company theft or other acts of ... The question is does the fetus have the same rights as an adult, so that it has the same right to not be killed. There are many debates on whether or not a fetus is human. Those who believe that there is no life related to a fetus then they believe that it has no rights. On the flip side, others may argue that abortion is the killing of an innocent human life. The question, "When does life begin?" appears over and over again throughout these debates and within cultures.Thompson believes that the question of whether a fetus have the same rights as a human being is irrelevant. Even if the fetus had all the rights of an adult human being, it would still be permissible to abort it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dying violist scenario of finding yourself attached to a violinist. The violinist had to be connected to your circulatory systems to live and taking him off would kill him. You must be connected to him for the next 9 months. The debate begins that attaching the violinist is unauthorized and there is then the right to go against this unauthorized connection. So realistically it is believed that when contraception fails, this is an unauthorized human being attached for 9 months. Rape could be put in this scenario, as well. In the example of the people–seeds, people seeds take on the characteristics of pollen. The people seeds may float in through a window onto the carpets. So when this happens, you would put up the finest mesh screens. In an highly uncommon scenario, the mesh was defected and a people–seed implants itself in the home. So this brings up the question whether or not a person–plant can now develop and have the right to use the home its in. This answer is clearly no. This is compared to how a failed contraception situation may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 133. Servant Leadership Thompson Samantha, I think that at some time everyone has encouraged or talked with someone else about which path they should follow, whether it should be one of a career, or a vocation. In dealing with those around me, it would depend on their situation, and whether this is a short term goal, as it can be with a certain career, or whether they have the means to follow their own heart as in choosing a vocation. Using these criteria, I would probably do things a little differently, considering what I now understand about servant leadership. In the scenario present by Thompson about Annie (Thompson, p. 39) this individual represents someone that is a little older (she had job security with a Fortune 200 company) and had worked there nineteen years. ... The day care and preschool center the children attend are aware of the family's situation of Marvin being in the military and just returning from active duty. These three concepts highlight the new yet deeply woven habitual actions humans use in modern day extended by the utilization of new technologies. Thompson attributed prodigious external memory to recording our ideas and events of our lives in the channels of writing and social media such as twitter to share our everyday experiences with others. The new channels of social media foster an emerging collection of dot connecting in which people are more connected than ever before by the sharing of pictures, news, and other people's lives. • 153. Analysis of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S.... Literature is considered a mirror of the society. The pool of content in literary writing stems from the environment in which the writer is placed. A writer will use this environment to advance his/her views of the society and at the same time drive into the audience/readers important information that he/she wishes to pass. Hunter S. Thompson has used his creativity in the novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas written in the 1960s to reflect on American society with Las Vegas as the point of reference. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas describes the American society as hypocritical. This transcends from the leaders to citizens. The Duke and Gonzo attend a conference on Narcotics and dangerous drugs. The theme of the conference is slated as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the dream is a dying one which has not materialized because of the society's greed, selfishness and corruption as depicted in Fear and Loathing in Vegas by Thomson. Drug business, prostitution and gambling have replaced legal businesses in Las Vegas. The picture of a crowd of Las Vegas residence in a casino at early hours of the morning gives more dimensions to the American dream. Emerging from a casino having won seems to epitomize what the society feels about the American dream Consumerism has been embraced in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is well brought out by the two protagonists in the novel. The lifestyle of the Duke and his attorney on the journey to Las Vegas is characterized by heavy spending on drugs, accommodation, transportation and gambling. The writer says they had bought "two bags of grass, seventy–five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high–powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi–colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls." This were hefty expenses which the writer goes ahead to acknowledge that they did not actually need bur for the fun of it.
