to be seen here and now; not delayed in time;
inviting one to come and see; onward leading to (Nibbana);
to be known by the wise, each for himself.
The Dhammas of the ages past,
the Dhammas that are yet to come,
the Dhammas of the present time, forever do I revere.

1 MIND 直直直直
The world is led around by mind, by mind the world is plagued.
Mind is itself the single thing which brings all else beneath its sway.
Mind precedes all things; mind is their chief, mind is their maker.
If one speaks or does a deed with a mind that is pure within,
happiness then follows along like a never departing shadow.
Difficult to detect and very subtle, the mind seizes whatever it
wants; so let a wise man guard his mind, for a guarded mind brings
happiness.
Wonderful it is to train the mind so swiftly moving,
seizing whatever it wants.
Good it is to have a well-trained mind, for a well-trained mind
brings happiness.

37. As a fletcher straightens an arrow, even so one who is wise
will straighten out the fickle mind, so unsteady and hard to control.
No mother nor father nor any other kin can do greater good for
oneself than a mind directed well.
Live without covetous greed, fill your mind with benevolence.
Be mindful and one-pointed, inwardly stable and concentrated.
There are five strands of sensual pleasure with the mind as the
sixth; by overcoming desire for these, one will be freed from
suffering.
My mind is firm like a rock, unattached to sensual things,
not shaking in the midst of a world where all is shaking.
My mind has thus been well-developed, so how can suffering
come to me?
Whether he walks or stands or sits or lies down, a monk should take
delight in controlling all thoughts. Such a monk is qualified to reach
supreme enlightenment.

38. 2 GIVING 布布
Not with recluses or brahmins, neither with the poor and
needy does the base man share his food or give any drink or
sustenance. People say that selfish man is like a drought, a
rainless sky.
One who shares his wealth with some, but does not gladly
give to others, is only like a local shower: in such a way the
wise describe him.
But one who rains down bountiful gifts, gladly giving here
and there out of compassion for all beings, and who always
says, “Give, give, ........” —
This type of person is like a giant cloud filled with rain,
thundering and pouring down refreshing water everywhere,
drenching the highlands and lowlands too, generous without
distinction.

37
39. With his wealth collected justly, won through his own efforts,
he shares both food and drink with beings who are in need.
Just as a pot filled with water, if overturned by anyone, pours
out all its water and does not hold any back,
Even so, when you see those in need, whether low, middle or
high, then give like the overturned pot,
holding nothing back.
Generosity, kind words, doing a good turn for others, and
treating all people alike:
these bonds of sympathy are to the world
what the lynchpin is to the chariot wheel.

40. Giving food one gives strength, giving clothes one gives
beauty, giving lamps one gives sight,
giving transport one gives delight.
Giving shelter one gives all; but one who instructs in the
Dhamma, the excellent teaching of the Buddha,
such a person gives ambrosia.
布布就任,致日 凡信你卫 ; 布布布克,致日 凡天卫 给;

41. 3 THE TRAINING 底底底底习习习习
“It’s too cold, it’s too hot, it’s too late.” With such excuses
one who gives up the practice lets his opportunities slip.
But one who looks on cold and heat as no more obstructive
than straw and continues with the practice does not fall short
of happiness.
So rid the mind of sloth and dullness, give up thinking of
many things. Be healthy and unattached to pleasure, be
devoted to the holy life.
Lean in body, frugal in food, content with little and
undisturbed, vain wishes gone and craving stilled, thus the
contented attain Nibbana.
‘太太凡、太 凡热 、太 凡迟 四世 以两为 ,无施而底习’

42. One who is stable in meditation will delight at the woodland’s
edge, meditating at the foot of a tree
until joy and contentment are won.
Sense desire, ill-will, sloth, laziness, agitation,
and doubt are not found in a true and worthy monk.
Do not hold back the mind from all, for it is not yet put to
sleep. But whenever evil things arise,
then should the mind be held in check.
宁无是 必去天稳 ,法 花闻树 欢,并或 在宁无树 ,

41
43. Possessed of energy and perseverance,
be always earnest in applying yourself.
The wise one should not be confident
until the end of suffering is reached.
With the jewelled necklace of concentration,
wrong thoughts cannot arise nor can the mind be distracted.
So let this be your adornment.
One who has gradually practised, developed and brought to
perfection mindfulness of the in-and-out breath as taught by
the
Enlightened One, illuminates the entire world
like the moon when freed from clouds.

44. 4 MINDFULNESS 无无无无心心心心
Even when obstacles crowd in, the path to Nibbana can be
won by those who establish mindfulness and bring to
perfection equipoise.
If your mind runs wild among sensual pleasures and things
that arise, quickly restrain it with mindfulness as one pulls
the cow from the corn.
Knowing that the other person is angry, one who remains
mindful and calm acts for his own best interest and for the
other’s interest, too.
He is a healer of both himself and the other person;
only those think him a fool who do not understand the
Dhamma.

45. Whether he walks, stands, sits or lies down, stretches out his
limbs or draws them in again, let a monk do so with
composure.
Above, across or back again, wherever he goes
in the world, let him carefully scrutinise
the rise and fall of compounded things.
Living thus ardently, at peace within, not restless
or mentally agitated, training himself, always mindful:
people call such a monk “one constantly resolute.”

mindfulness;
thus with a mind well detached, one understands and does
not cling.
Those skilled in the foundations of mindfulness,
delighting in the enlightenment factors,
with knowledge of Dhamma and keen insight,
live in the city of Dhamma.
Possessed of persevering energy,
practising the foundations of mindfulness,

47. 5 LOVE (I) 爱爱爱爱(I)
Hate brings great misfortune, hate churns up and
harms the mind; this fearful danger deep within
most people do not understand.
Thus spoilt one cannot know the good, cannot see things as
they are. Only blindness and gloom prevail when one is
overwhelmed by hate.
He who does not strike nor makes others strike,
who robs not nor makes others rob, sharing love with all that
live, finds enmity with none.

for the mindful one happiness increases;
for the mindful one things go better,
yet he is not freed from enemies.
But he who both day and night takes delight in
harmlessness, sharing love with all that live,
finds enmity with none.
When one with a mind of love feels compassion for all the
world — above, below and across, unlimited everywhere,
Filled with infinite kindness, complete and well-developed —
any limited actions one may have done, do not remain
lingering in one’s mind.

in virtue; arouse your energy,
be resolute, always firm in making progress.
Just as a loving mother would guard her only dearly beloved
child, so towards creatures everywhere, one should always
wish for their good.
A mind composed, well-concentrated, purified and undefiled,
full of kindness towards all beings —
this is the way that leads to the Highest.

Just as water cools both good and bad
and washes away all impurity and dust,
In the same way, you should develop thoughts
of love to friend and foe alike, and having reached perfection
in love, you will attain enlightenment.

those with many feet harm me not.
May all creatures, all living things, all beings one and all,
experience good fortune only. May they not fall into harm.
I am a friend and helper to all. I am sympathetic to all living
beings. I develop a mind full of love
and always delight in harmlessness.

and unshakable. I develop the divine states of mind
not cultivated by evil men.
Therefore the meditation on love should be done
for oneself and others. All should be suffused
with love: this is the teaching of the Buddha.
Whoever makes love grow boundless,
and sets his mind for seeing the end of birth,
his fetters are worn thin.

53. 7 HAPPINESS 常获
One who later wishes to do the things he should have done
before, falls away from happiness
and long afterwards repents.
Slay anger and you will be happy,
slay anger and you will not sorrow.
For the slaying of anger in all its forms
with its poisoned root and sweet sting —
that is the slaying the nobles praise;
with anger slain one weeps no more.
What others call happiness, the noble call pain; what others
call pain, the noble call happiness.
Behold this Dhamma hard to comprehend
by which the dull are utterly baffled.

52
54. Always happy is the wise one who is wholly free within, who
is not stained by sense desires —
cooled is he and free from clinging.
The happiness of sensual lust and the happiness of heavenly
bliss are not equal to a sixteenth part
of the happiness of craving’s end.
With all his attachments cut, with the heart’s pining subdued,
calm and serene and happy is he,
for he has attained peace of mind.
A monk who has abundant joy in the Dhamma taught
by the Buddha, will attain peace and happiness,
with the calming of the constructs.

55. Solitude is happiness for one who is content,
who has heard the Dhamma and clearly sees.
Non-affliction is happiness in the world —
harmlessness towards all living beings.
Freedom from lust is happiness in the world,
the going beyond all sensual desires.
But the crushing out of the conceit "I am”—
this is the highest happiness.
The fully perfected Buddha has taught Nibbana as the
highest happiness — without grief, immaculate, secure, the
state where all suffering ceases.

FIVE SUBJECTS FOR FREQUENT RECOLLECTION
我常加五在天我就在经
I am subject to aging, have not gone beyond aging.
I am subject to illness, have not gone beyond illness.
I am subject to death, have not gone beyond death.
I will grow different, separate from all that is dear and
appealing to me.
I am the owner of my actions;
I am born of my actions;
I am related to my actions;
I am supported by my actions;
Any thoughts, words or deeds I do, good or evil, those I will
inherit.
These are the five facts that one should reflect on often.
我必会他,我因未超佛他;
我必会世,我因未超佛世;
我必会悟,我因未超佛悟;
我 去天凡任亲爱 , 必会直直凡达花我终 。

57. Before long, alas! This body will be laid on the earth,
discarded, devoid of consciousness, and useless like
a log of wood.
Transient alas, are all conditioned things, subject are they to
impermanence, birth and then decay;
having gained birth to death, the life flux swings -
bliss truly dawns when unrest dies away.
All kinds of beings surely will come to death;
they have always died, will always die.
In the same way I shall surely die;
doubt about this does not exist in me.

58. Worldlings subject to illness, old age, and death, get
disgusted seeing others with such afflictions.
If I were to become disgusted seeing beings with these
natural afflictions, that would not be proper since I too must
age, be sick and die.
While I was contemplating on this, having known the state of
letting go, I overcame all intoxicants - intoxication with
health, with youth, and with life - having seen security in
renunciation.
Zeal then arose in me as I clearly saw Nibbāna. Now I am
incapable of indulging in sensual pleasures. Completely
devoted to the spiritual life, never will I turn back.

59. 9 COUNTING ONE’S OWN BLESSINGS
Infinite in number and variety are the states of existence that
beings are born into. I have been born as a human being.
Countless are those who cannot speak or hear what is
spoken to them, who cannot see or read and who lack the
power to reason and ponder. I have been born with all limbs
and faculties complete.
Many are those who dwell in lands of strife and conflict and
who are deprived of security and safety. I am living in a land
that is at peace.
Incalculable are those who toil without end and who are
driven by hunger and want. I have wealth to sustain the body
and time to give it rest.
Numerous are those whose bodies and minds are in bonds,
who are not their own masters, unable to go where they wish,
unable to think as they like. I enjoy great freedom.
Without number are those who live in regions where the
Light of the Dhamma shines not or where its message is not
heard above the racket of false doctrines. I have heard and
understood the good Dhamma.
Truly precious is this human life and great are the blessings I
enjoy. Here and now, before the Buddha, I contemplate on
my own good fortune and resolve to use this rare
opportunity to work for my own good and the good of others.
With strong determination, I will overcome all obstacles,
both great and small.
58
61. ASPIRATIONS
SELECTION A
May the Buddha guide my thoughts and actions throughout
the day.
May the Dhamma help me to be strong in moments of
weakness, brave in times of trouble, and calm in the face of
changing fortunes.
May the Sangha inspire me to act with kindness, patience,
and forgiveness in my dealings with others, including those
who are unfriendly to me.
May the Devas (Deities) protect me and my family.
May the Arahats( the Saints) and the Bodhisattas (Buddhas
to be) guide me in my daily life.
May the world be blessed with peace and prosperity.
May I have the opportunity today to help someone in need of
my love and support. I shall not waste this life in useless
pursuits but use it well to bring happiness and benefit to all
beings.
May the Buddha be at my head, the Dhamma in my heart, and
the Sangha at my side to protect and guide me always.
60
63. SELECTION B
If I have strayed from the True Path,
may I never do so again.
If I have carelessly hurt someone today, by word or by deed,
may I be more mindful the next time.
O Buddha, the Enlightened One, help me to set my heart
right.
May my actions reflect Your Love and Compassion.
I shall strive to cleanse my heart from hate and envy, and live
in harmony with all people.
I shall be close to the Dhamma, in good as well as in difficult
times.
I know that should the moment come for me to leave the
world, I shall do so without fear and regret because I leave
the world a better person than when I came into it.
Whatever wrong someone may do to me, may I be
compassionate and forgive him or her, and bear no hatred in
my heart.
I shall not forget to be grateful for the acts of love and
consideration shown to me, no matter how small they appear
to be.
May this life be a blessing and a source of happiness to all
beings.
May I realize the Truth in all its aspects, the Path in all its
stages.
May I attain the Peace that surpasses understanding, the
Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.
62
65. BUDDHIST HYMNS 礼礼礼礼佛佛佛佛
1 MORTAL AND IMMORTAL
How sweetly bloom the cherry trees,
Beneath the April sky!
But soon, too soon, their brightness wanes,
For they must fade and die;
And all their petals bright,
Soon on the ground we find.
For while the world doth sleep,
There comes the midnight wind.
So is the heart that seeks for peace,
Within this world of strife,
For many are man's woes below,
In this, our mortal life;
And when all seems delight,
And hours of bliss we find;
Through our frail trees of life,
There blows the midnight wind.
It's true that mortal life is sad,
And quickly passes by;
But still abides that ancient gleam,
Of Truth that cannot die.
For when self's flower is dead,
Its petals blown away,
We'll see the glorious light,
Of Truth's eternal day.
64
66. 2 LIFE NEVER DIES
Life never dies, although we live,
In midst of change and death.
Only the forms shall pass away,
And not the spirit's breath.
The consciousness can never die,
Although it seems to fade.
It doth but pass to other forms
Which thoughts and acts have made.
"There is no death" all nature cries,
The rose will reappear.
Its petal will more perfect be,
After the winter drear.
The tiny bird that lifeless falls,
A victim to its prey.
Returns again in higher forms,
Upon its upward way.
From life to life more high and free
The myriad forms evolve.
O may we learn to know the truth
This mighty riddle solve.
65
67. 3 NIRVANA'S ENDLESS DAY
Long have we sought for Truth's bright light,
Long have we wandered in the night.
Lord Buddha hath found the holy way,
That leads from night to endless day.
When shall we find the road to peace,
When earthly strife and hatred cease?
O weary soul that peace profound,
In Buddha's Holy Law is found.
Where shall we learn that Law sublime,
Which leads us on the peace divine?
To Buddha's Holy Law we turn,
The Path of Truth and Peace to learn.
Why must we wander many a year,
In pain and misery and fear?
The Eightfold Path of wondrous wealth,
Is hidden by the love of self.
And must we pray that we may find,
The strength to break the chains that bind?
By each one must the race be run,
And not by prayer is freedom won.
Whence comes the suffering of this life,
How can we end our state of strife?
By Buddha's Law is justice known,
For each must reap what each has sown.
With love that never more shall wane,
We'll praise Lord Buddha's holy name,
And in the Dhamma's Noble Way,
We'll reach Nirvana's Endless Day.
66
68. 4 LORD BUDDHA SPEAKS TO ME
Lord Buddha speaks to me in accents low:
“My child, look up and learn the Truth I show.
Trust not illusion’s vision, ever brief and fleeting.
For only Truth can give thee, thy heart’s desire.”
Lord Buddha speaks to me, when sin holds sway,
When passion’s fire rise high and help seems far away.
“Fear not, for I have conquered passions fierce and raging. Tread
thou the Path I show thee therein lies peace.”
Lord Buddha speaks to me, when friends depart;
When loneliness assails my aching heart:
“My child, my feet once wandered lonely in the forest,
But in the hour of darkness, I found Truth’s light.”
Lord Buddha speaks to me, in death’s dark night.
When closing eyes no more can see earth’s light:
“My child,” He whispers softly, “brighter light is shining.
Hold fast the Truth I gave thee and thou shalt see.”
67
69. 5 FAREWELL
1
Evermore in mem'ry we shall treasure
The golden hours we spent with you
Hours that brought to us in fullest measure
All the blessings and the joys of friendship true
2
Farewell to you our friend so true
May Love and Truth Eternal guide you
And Love divine upon your path way shine
Until we meet again
3
We have bowed with you in sweet communion
Before the Buddha's Holy Shrine
And no parting o'er can rend the union
Of our spirits in His Brotherhood divine
Repeat 2
68
70. 6 SONG OF THE TRIPLE GEM
1
With reverent hearts we bow before
The Master's holy shrine
Peacefully we contemplate
His countenance sublime
2
His sacred precepts we accept
To guide us day by day
Thus follow we His footsteps
And tread the Eightfold Way
3
From earthly passions and desires
He sought and found release
And so may we the Truth attain
Nibbana's calm and peace
Repeat 1
7 HEAR THE LORD
1
Hear the Lord
Learn what you can
Strive while you can
And be blessed by The Triple Gem
2
Hear the Lord
Do what is good
Cleanse one’s mind
And be free from the ills of life
Praise the Lord
Who showed us The Way
The Dhamma He taught to all (of us)
Repeat 2 69
71. 8 THE LAW OF KARMA
What e’er ye sow that shall ye reap
Such is the law Divine
Think not that thou can’st e’er escape
The Karma which is thine
The present is the true result of actions all our own
The sower always reaps the fruits
Of seeds which he has sown
The Law is ever just and true
And all must surely bear
The strict result of every act
For none the Law can spare
Weep not for what is past and gone
For it cannot return
This is the teaching Buddha gave
For all His sons to learn
Do not despair, the future still is thine
to mar or make
Sow then today good seeds and pure
And reap their harvest great
The goal divine still shines afar
All may this goal attain
When they have learned good seeds to sow
And things of self have slain
70
72. 9 I HAVE FOUND ETERNAL REFUGE
I have found eternal refuge
In the Blessed One, the Lord
O what peace, what joy and comfort
This assurance can afford
By His pure example guided
Constant shall my efforts be
Till o'er self and sin triumphant
I shall rise in purity
I have found eternal refuge
In the Buddha's Sacred Word
Truth and wisdom's priceless treasure
By His love on man conferred
There His glorious Path revealing
Out of earthly woe and night
He will lead me safely onward
To Nirvana's joy and light
I have found eternal refuge
In His Holy Brotherhood
All my power consecrating
To promote the reign of good
When His Truth the world shall lighten
As the sunlight from above
All the hearts of men uniting
Ever more in peace and love
71
73. 10 WE SHALL ALL OVERCOME
1
We shall all overcome
We shall all overcome
We shall all overcome the Greed in us
We shall all overcome
We shall all overcome
We shall all overcome the Hate in us
We shall conquer Illusion
And find true liberty
That leads us through this troubled sea
We shall go beyond the shore
Be peaceful evermore
‘Cause we cry and sigh no more
Then together we’ll see everlasting peace
When all our fear and worry cease
Repeat 1
2
We shall all overcome
We shall all overcome
We shall all overcome the fear in us
We shall all overcome
We shall all overcome
We shall all overcome the Doubts in us
Clear away our minds’ confusion
Ever watchful till the end
Bravely walk our Way to Freedom Land
We shall dwell in Peace and Love
Rejoicing evermore
Rejoice! We have found The Law
By this Law shall we live
Through this Law shall we see
The Joy and Peace of being Free
72

93. (VERSES ON ASPIRATION AND TRANSFERENCE OF MERITS)
LEADER:
LET US ALL NOW CHANT THE VERSES ON ASPIRATION AND
TRANSFERENCE OF MERITS TO ALL BEINGS.
By this meritorious deed may my highly virtuous Teachers, helpful
Guardians, my dear Mother and Father, Suriyo and Candimā kings
(the Devas of Sun and Moon), all virtuous humans, Brahmas, Devas,
Māras and Indras (Tāvatiṁsa Devas), the world protecting Devas,
Yama (Devas of the underworld), humans, friends, indifferent ones,
enemies too, may all beings be happy, sharing my merits.
May the triple happiness be attained, now, after death, and finally
Nibbāna; soon may all gain release from evil.
By this meritorious deed and through this sharing,
may I soon attain to the good, eradicating cravings and attachments,
and all low states of mind, until I attain Nibbana.
May such evil everywhere be destroyed, as one reappears, existence
after existence. May there be the upright mind, thoughtful wisdom,
purity and energy.
May evils personified as Māras never approach me through the
power of my action and energy, through such power as the Lord
Buddha, the Law, lofty, supreme
and best.
The Lordly-lone Buddhas and my highest Lords of the Ariya-
Sangha, even unto my final birth, may evils never approach me.

99. DEDICATION OF WAKE/MEMORIAL SERVICES
Good evening Brothers and Sisters in the Dhamma.
May you all be well and happy.
We are all gathered here this evening for a wake/memorial service
dedicated to the late ...........................
May the departed one be free from suffering.
May he/she be calm and peaceful.
May the Dhamma be with him/her always.
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be upon him/her.
We shall share the merits accumulated through participating
in this wake/memorial service and the chanting with the Devas.
May the Devas rejoice in these merits and shower untold blessings
on ourselves and all sentient beings.
By the power of the Triple Gem, may all beings be blessed with
good health, strength, happiness and peace.
Let us dedicate and transfer the merits accumulated
through positive motivations and actions to the departed one,
the late ............................. and all other beings in need.
May they gain better rebirths, find happiness and peace
and attain the bliss of Nibbana.
We shall now begin the wake service /memorial service and
chanting.
