What Is Peace? Essay
Humans are obsessed with categorizing. We split the people and things of the world into millions of
groups and give them names, characteristics, and stereotypes. Ethnicity, sexuality, religion, political
view, genus and species: these all reflect the human's constant need to note, name, and categorize.
Still not convinced? Look at a dictionary. The fact that it was even created proves a tendency of the
human mind to solidify things, their category, their characteristics, and their definition. Most brains
do not do well with the abstract noun. Words like love, justice, fairness, and peace bounce about and
cannot be tamed by a definition. This doesn't stop humans though. Our constant need to classify and
define still raises the incessant...show more content...
She brings up the creation of the United Nations after WWII and the atomic bomb, in order to
exhibit the willingness of nations to strive collectively for peace post–disaster. Corkalo claims that
humans have natural psychological instincts that result in protectiveness and pride for the social,
religious, political, or racial group they belong to. This sense of self–importance and righteousness
is the root problem of most conflict. Corkalo believes that peace education would work to create
intercultural training programs that break down the barriers of misconceptions, stereotypes, and
discriminations, while maintaining the worth and validity of each social group. Corkalo's proposal
is ideal. I agree that giving the young generation the key to intercultural understanding, equal
opportunity, and worth would bring great peace. The decomposition of peace for the purpose of
education is a fascinating process that unveils its complexity and relevance to nearly all subjects.
However, it is so complex that to teach its vast array of components appears to be nearly impossible.
If peace were attempted to be taught internationally, students would take extensive amounts of
classes in the fields of sociology, psychology, theology, political science, languages, and history. This

A Separate Peace: by John Knowles
During World War II in the struggle for peace among nations comes a smaller, but still significant
struggle, in a prep school boy becoming a man and waking up to reality.
In the book A Separate Peace, the author John Knowles, creates the image of twosixteen–year old
boys struggling to keep what little sense of peace they know, even though there is a war going on all
around them. Gene Forrester, the narrator of the story also struggles with an inner conflict of his
secret resentment of his best friend Phineas (Finny). Phineas struggles with the disbelief that he can
never be of any use to the war efforts with a "busted leg."...show more content...
Finny does not believe a word of this disturbing revelation and sends Gene away. When Finny does
return to Devon, he never brings up Gene's off–the–wall confession. Months pass and suddenly the
accident is brought up again by a boy named Brinker who believes that there is more to the story
than what is being said. (No one else in the school new for a fact that Gene shook the branch on
purpose to make Finny fall, they just had empty accusations.) So Brinker set up a sort–of mock court
one night and took Gene and Finny there. Finny was seated in the middle of the Assembly Hall
and asked to tell what happened. Since Gene's confession, Finny refuses to believe it is true and
imagines that Gene wasn't even in the tree with him, therefore, he would not be able to place Gene
as the guilty one. As the story unravels of what really happens, Finny gets fed up and leaves the
building saying, "I just don't care. Never mind." And then all the boys hear him fall down a flight of
stairs, re–breaking his leg. This time though, Finny isn't so lucky and while the doctor is setting
the break, some of the bone marrow gets into his bloodstream and immediately stops his heart.
When Gene hears of this he does not cry, nor does he ever cry over Finny's death, because when
Finny died it was like he died with Finny. At the end of the school year, Gene enlists in the war and

War or Peace? Essays
If you think about war and then think about peace is war really all that bad? Without wars there
would basically be no human life because no one would have anything really. Wars are defiantly
not all good but they are also not all bad if there are not a bunch of them. A successful war in
transition to peace was the Guatemalan war of 1960–1996 because they are still living in a bit
peaceful country today but are making major progress. An example of an unsuccessful war in
transition to peace is the 1991 Somalia Civil War which is still ongoing today. Corruption is on of
the main things this essay will be about since corruption is on of the leading causes of most wars in
the world. The Guatemalan civil war was one of the longest and...show more content...
Before long, the Rebel Armed Forces (FAR) were formed and they began assassinating United States
military advisors and ambassadors. Then in the 1970's insurgent organizations began forming and
fought against the military that was in charge. When Rios Montt took over as the new president of
Guatemala; his main concern was defeating the guerrilla groups with his military army. The
government started forming civilian defense patrols called PACs. Participation was mostly
voluntary, but most Guatemalans had no choice, they either had to join the PACs or the
guerrillas. Rios Montt's army and PACs recaptured all of the guerrilla's land and their activities
declined. Even though, Rios Montt won this victory he won it at the cost civilians' lives. After
the violence of Montt, General Oscar Humberto Mejia Victores stepped in as President. In 1984
Mejia agreed to give back democracy to Guatemala and they elected a new official. He took office
in January 1986: Vinicio Cerezo, a civilian politician. Even with a new President it took another
ten years of war to make peace. In the first two years of Cerezo's presidency there was a decline in
violence and the military only struggled with armed insurgents. There was also a more stable
economy which was excellent for the Guatemalans. In the last two years, there was a failing
economy, illness, and the escalation of violence. The government did not know how to deal with the
country's declining heath, education, and economy or the rise in

National Peace Essay
Our world is full of corruption; peace between countries is thrown out the window when power takes
charge of everything we know. Because of that, there are issues that are more than difficult to solve–
fighting, protest outbreaks, slaughters in the streets, rebels, countries turning their backs on their
own people – everything is out of control. In some countries, the intensity has been growing for
more than two years, and obviously it's not getting any better. What we want, what everyone wants,
is to have peace. But that is just a product of our imagination as horror is leaked out and we can't
stop the wars, hatred, and starvation that destructs the world that we know and love. These issues
can affect people who never wanted to get involved: women, children, the elderly. That is what's so
sickening about it all, destruction that is threaded together by greed, power, and selfishness. Most of
us might think the officials are exaggerating on the seriousness of these issues, but this is real. If we
transition to peace, it could bring up questions about how to handle the security forces. The Security
Sector Reform is for rebuilding a country's security sector, and it contributes to sustaining the peace
in differing ways that really keep these societies on their feet.
When a society turns on itself and decides to go toward civil war, it can force the leader of the
country out of office, which leads to the country being politically unstable. "Currently, the epicenter

Essay on Peace
After a millennium of conflict and war–what chance of a millennium of peace? Some ten millennia
ago civilization emerged in the Middle East, as the people of that area learned to till the earth and
grow crops, thus opening the way to the ownership of land and the accumulation of wealth, and also
to population growth and urban settlement. This new way of life created the potential for conflicts
between towns and states and, later, between empires. This civilization brought warfare in its train.
While these new state structures was evolving, Christianity was becoming a predominantly
European religion. And the power of that religion's moral teaching, however much distorted by
human failings of clergy and rulers, inspired an extraordinary...show more content...
Not, perhaps, in the short run. But I would be optimistic that over the century ahead peace and order
under just such an international rule of law may also take hold gradually in other continents. For
global public opinion, alerted and informed by the electronic as well as the printed media, has
become increasingly hostile to the brutality of inter–ethnic and inter–state violence and to continuing
gross breaches of human rights.
As we enter the third millennium, this should, I believe, become the key objective of public policy
worldwide.
I believe it is the dove of peace, which, taking its aerial flight from the dome of the capitol, carries
the glad tidings of assured peace and restored harmony to all the remotest extremities of this
distracted land. I believe that it will be attended with all these beneficent effects. And now let us
discard all resentment, all passions, all petty jealousies, all personal desires, all love of place, all
hankerings after the gilded crumbs which fall from the table of power. Let us forget popular fears,
from whatever quarter they may spring. Let us go to the limpid fountain of unadulterated patriotism,
and, performing a solemn lustration, return divested of all selfish, sinister, and sordid impurities, and
think alone of our God, our country, our consciences, and our glorious Union–that

Peace In Judaism
Peace is a complex, multifaceted concept that is immensely central to every religious community.
Peace is the essence of all religions, the reason being that the objectives of religion can never be
fulfilled without peace. Each religion shares a similar purpose, to guide their adherents to achieving
peace through spiritual development and growth, allowing enlightenment among individuals and
creation. The idea of peace is commonly categorised into two main branches, inner peace and world
peace. Both branches have differentiating purposes and goals, however in many cases have the
potential to interconnect and greatly influence one another. Inner peace refers to the presence of
mindfulness, a state of calmness, security and a spiritual state of being with the...show more content...
Along with truth and justice, peace is one of the three key Jewish values, it is understood by
adherents that all Jews have a religious obligation to pursue peace and practice it within
themselves and in the world. The Hebrew word for peace is 'shalom,' meaning complete and
fulfilled. Shalom also conveys the sense of being at peace with God and involves forgiveness of
sin, fullness of life, prosperity, and peace. Jewish adherents are encouraged to live out shalom
and implement actions and practices of shalom into their lives where possible. Jews draw
inspiration from the sacred texts, especially focused on the Torah, of their tradition for their
understanding of what it is to lead purposeful and peaceful lives. The Torah acts as a guide to
shining light on peace and what it means to be in a state of shalom. Peace, according to the Jewish
sages, is the ultimate purpose of the whole Torah, as expressed in Deuteronomy Rabah 5:15, "God
announceth to Jerusalem that they [Israel] will be redeemed only through peace." Jewish adherents
are taught to follow a path of peace as it is only through the gift of peace that will save the Jewish

What Is Peace Essay
First of all, what is peace? We all know that peace is just being quiet and calm. But what is the
real definition of peace? Well, peace is actually a freedom from disturbance. In other words,
tranquillity. It is also the absence or the cessation of war or violence. In the modern world we are
living now, human race is getting more and more repulsive. Human rights are no longer served like
they were used to, humans are being so self–centred for themselves that they became ignorant of
what their words or actions might consequence in. At this point, it might lead to feelings hurt
emotionally or even suicidal thoughts issue. The effect of this is that it could cause joys of serenity
only reigning in the heart of those with high self–esteem and selfishness.
