Advantages Of A Fraternity
Advantages of a Fraternity I was never a fan of fraternities. At first, I thought people who joined
were just after the impression of other people that they look cool because they have a fraternity. In
addition there are alot of hazing issues reported on media, which tells people that joining a fraternity
is dangerous. Despite the negative stigma against fraternities, the majority of the society will never
truly know how fraternities teach individuals to appreciate hard work, support and help each other,
and develop social organizational, and study skills. Initiation teaches individuals to appreciate hard
work as well as balance their time and work with a team. Initiation is the action of receiving
someone into a concealed organization, typically with a ritual. The problem is most people associate
initiation with hazing, which is not all the time true. The purpose of the initiation is to prepare the
individual for whatever challenges they may encounter in their lives, besides knowing the

Why Fraternities Should be Banned Essay
Recently, the idea of partaking in a fraternity has become more prevalent. Young adults are
captivated with wanting to live the Greek life. The clothes and parties seem to drawn in teens like a
magnet. However what these teens do not realize is the terrible things associated with fraternities.
Many fraternities have a reputation for turning college students into drunks, treating women
vulgarly, enacting violent hazing against other fraternity members and disrupting the true reason
why students go to college. For these reasons fraternities should be banned altogether on college
campuses. First of all, fraternities have proven to be a serious reason for underage drinking and
binge drinking. These young adults have far less supervision and ... Show more content on

Men taking advantage of women is considered a social norm. Also, When fraternity members
admitted to doing things that by law are considered rape they did not believe that they were rapist.
They insist that if a girl is intoxicated then they are still able to consent to sex. Granted not all
Greeks are this way. Many fraternity members treat women respectfully and contribute greatly to
bettering the college experience. The problem is too many offenders do exist and they have ruined
the once credible reputation of fraternities everywhere. Furthermore, fraternities are infamous for
their requirement to pledge in order to join the brotherhood. Although the specific acts inflicted on
pledges is known only by members of fraternity, it is commonly known that hazing is part of the
initiation. The pledges have to complete a series of humiliating and sometime dangerous rituals in
order to join. They could be forced to consume excessive amount of alcohols and drugs, or be
physically beaten or be publicly humiliated. Little known fact, white fraternities generally use
alcohol for hazing while black fraternities result to physical violence. In a survey conducted by Dr.
Susan Lipkins "31% of Fraternity and sorority members agree that a significant element in an
initiation rite is humiliation." "Also, many of the Greek Leaders agree that

The Ancient Greek Fraternity In The 1930's
Like the old ancient ritual of unity in the ancient Greek polis, people join a group to belong and
preformed tasks that achieve the overall goals of these organizations. In these organizations,
students celebrated a bond of unity among their fellow classmates. In the 1930's, Texas Lutheran
College had a variety of clubs and fraternities that its students belong to on campus. In these
organizations, students participated in activities associated with a club. These events and tasks
improved the student's traits and talents as well as associate themselves with people who share the
same interests. The members of the fraternities and clubs installed a sense of values and culture
within their members. Like the ancient Greek polis, fraternities and ... Show more content on

A fraternity is "a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest,
or pleasure" This organization is a network of students that help each other to serve on campus. Like
other colleges, Texas Lutheran College had fraternities. During the 1930s, students at the campus
joined these organizations to help satisfy their sense of belonging and create a network of people to
help them out. The most notable fraternity in 1930's is the Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society/
fraternity for students who made good grades. Members were eligible for membership only if "they
were within the highest ten percent.", and "Elected by the faculty of the school." This organization
had thrown together activities for its members such as picnics and debates. During picnics, these
members usually ate lunch and played games. The Phi Theta Kappa hosted debates over issues
corresponding to the time. They hosted a debate among its members over "world peace" as a fun
activity. Other fraternities were centered on a student's career choice. For example, the Alpha Delta
Sigma, a pre–medical fraternity that focused mainly on students who were entering the medical field
and Sigma Tau Sigma, a pre–engineering society that focused on students who planned to enter the
engineering field. These fraternities help establish a network of people from the same field. These
fraternities throw banquets for its members to grant awards and elect new

College Fraternities And Sororities Serve As Exclusive
One of the historic facets of university life, among special interest clubs, sports teams, and volunteer
organizations is Greek life. College fraternities and sororities serve as exclusive groups denoted by
Greek letters where men and women bond, forming "brotherhoods" and "sisterhoods" with fellow
members, getting involved on campus, practicing philanthropy and community service, and creating
long–lasting friendships. At face value, Greek life seems like an ideal environment for all entering
college students who want to get involved and socialize; however, there are many complexities and
undertones that can be attributed to the Greek system. Greek organizations are known for their
competitive "rush" process where prospective members undergo an interview process in multiple
social settings to receive bids from fraternity and sorority houses (Nelson 8). Sororities, in
particular, are usually extremely selective during rush, as they must "[maintain] a specific
appearance" as a whole, and bid on aspiring girls who mirror the appearance and demeanor of the
sorority (Nelson 7). Even though this superficiality exists in sororities, some affirm that they foster a
sense of community and support (Farrington 22) and promote self–efficacy and a thirst for academic
excellence (Thompson 4). Controversies like hazing, alcohol consumption at parties, and the
establishment of a social hierarchy of female students in sororities have brought the topic of Greek

The Positive Influences of College Fraternities Essay
The Positive Influences of College Fraternities
According to Webster's New World Dictionary the definition of a stereotype is: a fixed or
conventional notion or concept. While attending college I have noticed that stereotypes are a part of
every day life. Day in and day out people are judged for who they are and what they believe in.
These stereotypes are especially relevant in fraternities. The negative stereotypes associated with
college fraternities have recently been blown way out of proportion and commonly overshadow the
many positive aspects and contributions of Greek life. The Greek system offers men and women the
opportunity to compliment their college education by better rounding themselves and giving back to

Negatives are far more desired by our society even though they are a small part of the puzzle.
Society needs to be educated on is the true nature and character of the college fraternity.
Several fraternities across the country and in Canada praise themselves on community service.
According to Jeff Celieo, president of the Interfraternity Council at BGSU, "In the past our
community has given us so much, it is now our turn to give back to them." Through these projects
thousands of dollars have been raised to support worthy causes. Just last year the Sigma Chi
Fraternity raised $2000.00 for the Children's Miracle Network branch at the Medical College of
Ohio. In another effort the Greek community of BGSU joined together and created Dance Marathon.
Just this last weekend Dance Marathon raised close to $160,000.00 for Children's Miracle Network.
The men and women of these organizations participate in events such as these for a reason. We want
to give back to our community and make people like you proud of what we stand for.
The men of fraternal life strive for tradition. Recently several national chapters have restored their
traditional values which mostly put emphasis on the ideals of men of intellect and good character.
An excellent example of this would be the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The men of Sigma Alpha
Epsilon live by the motto, The True Gentleman. According to their web site on

Fraternity And Sorority
College students have many life altering questions they must answer through the journey of further
education. From a student's major, living circumstance, classes, and getting involved on campus, it
can start to get stressful if there are mixed signals about what they are getting into. Getting involved
on campus is a great way to meet people and improve skills needed after graduation. A student
might choose to be involved in Greek life because of the parties, friends, and job application quirks
down the road (Joining a Fraternity, np). The outcome involves those things, but it also involves
leadership traits, lifelong relationships, the ability to surpass the negative public perception of
Fraternity and Sorority men and women, and keep up good grades. While involved in Greek life,
each chapter has an executive council which is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a student does not have that certain GPA requirement they get dropped from recruitment before
the chapter even considers looking at anything else. Students must maintain a certain GPA to stay in
the chapter. Most fraternities or sororities have weekly study groups. My chapter has a Geek of the
Week, which goes to whoever makes the highest grades on major tests. If a student's GPA drops
under a certain score, then they have to have a certain amount of study hours or note checks until
their grade goes back up. If their GPA is so low for a long amount of time they might get kicked out
of the fraternity or sorority. Students knowing that they have to keep their grades up for a fraternity
or sorority could help them graduate. "A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those
who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non–fraternity/sorority persons
graduate" (Fraternity and Sorority Facts, np). Fraternities and sororities are helping their members

The World Spun Is Every Direction Around Me
The world spun is every direction around me. There was a sharp, shooting pain in my calf and
shoulder. I was soaking wet and coughing water, I could hear faded voices screaming. My whole
body felt like it was on fire, it became unbearable and I blacked out. It all started on a cold
December night. It didn't start out bad, but I can't say the same for how it ended. It was Delilah's
annual Christmas party, the music was blasting and we were all having a great time, until they
showed up. The "it" crew, the girls who wore short skirts and high heel and acted like they ruled the
world. "What are you doing here?" I asked in a demanding tone. "Oh, nothing. We just didn't have
anything better to do tonight." Said their unofficial leader, Jessica. If this was any other party, we
would have walked away and let the plastics have their fun, but this was not where they belong, this
was our night. "How about we play a game, ladies?" I suggested, "It's called Triple Dog. We dare
you to do some outrageous task, and if you don't, you leave. And the other way around." "Well pack
your bags, this won't take long." Jessica said. I didn't know it at the time, but I had just made the
worst decision of my life. We went into one of the bedrooms in the house, and huddled in us on one
side, them on the other. "You can go first." I said in a fake polite voice. "Ok then, then we can get
back to the party. Emily, I'll dare you." I was surprised she didn't pick me, given that we had

Mary has to make a decision about whether she wants to disobey her parents, or call it a day and
stay home. Mary decides to disobey her parents and sneak out with Carrie. When the two arrive at
the party, Mary and Carrie are offered beers upon their entrance. Mary declines politely, while
Carrie gladly takes the beer from one of the frat boys who is hosting the party. While inside the
party, one of the girls inside recognizes Mary and says, "Isn 't that Reverend Camden 's daughter?"
The group of girls huddle up and start discussing how shocked they are to see Mary at the party. The
girls are shocked because it isn 't typical to see a Christian pastor 's daughter at a fraternity party.
The girls who are talking about Mary only reinforce the idea that people think kids of pastors, or
policemen, or the President, don 't make bad choices. 7th Heaven must address this issue of partying
in order to make the show seem more like the realistic situations high school and college students
are faced with every day. By putting Mary in this situation, the show reinforces the belief that a
pastor 's daughter does not make decisions like the one Mary made about sneaking out. This belief is
prevalent in the reality that we live in because the television media makes it so evident by showing
us how we should act when situations like these arise.

Why Hazing Should Be Allowed In College
College life brings many thoughts to mind friendships, football , pizza, late nights, parties,
fraternities, sororities, as well as racial discrimination, binge drinking, hazing and dying. The latter
part of this list may not come naturally to most people, but they are frightening realities of the Greek
system. Parents send their children to college assuming they will be in a safe, educational
environment while enjoying all the benefits campus life has to offer, including fraternities and
sororities. They do not expect a phone call in the early hours of the morning notifying them of their
child's death. Since March of 2000, over 60 people have died in events associated with fraternities,
alcohol and/or hazing (Marklein p. A3). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A national survey of college students by Harvard researchers found that nearly half of males and
more than a third of females engage in binge drinking. Among Greek students the numbers
skyrocket: 86% of fraternity members and 80% of sorority members living in chapter houses are
likely to engage in binge drinking (Marklein). The frequent focus fraternities and sororities place on
alcohol encourages excessive consumption, unfortunately causing the development of alcoholism
and incidents of alcohol poisoning. The term hazing is defined as "any conduct or method of
initiation into any student organization, whether on public or private property, which willfully or
recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of any student or other person" (UMass).
Whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the weather, forced consumption of
food, liquor, beverages, , brutal treatment, extended isolation, sleep deprivation, and forced physical
activities that adversely affect physical health and safety are just some known acts of hazing that
Greek members may force their "brothers" and "sisters" to undergo. Imagine getting an update from
your college student. Your freshman son calls home, reporting he has just made the lacrosse team
and is excited to receive his fraternity pin the next day. The following morning the phone rings, but
it is not your beloved child. A policeman calls to inform you that your son had just died of

Colleges Should Dispose Of Fraternities
Many Americans believe that fraternities embody the college experience and that they are essential
for every student. Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. Fraternities can actually
encourage exclusivity and discriminatory behavior. They also serve no purpose that other
organizations do not already offer. Therefore, colleges should dispose of fraternities.
Fraternities encourage exclusivity and discrimination, so they must be banned. As Stephanie Saul
states in her New York Times article, "Harvard Restrictions Could Reshape Exclusive Student
Clubs," fraternities can "foster an atmosphere of misogyny, sexual misconduct, and entitlement"
which led to the restrictions enacted by Harvard University and other colleges across the

Should Fraternities And Sororities Be Banned?
The question about Greek life on campus is whether if fraternities and sororities should be banned.
The reasoning behind that is because of all the sexual assault, hazing, and binge drinking happening
on campus. All of those problems are causing people to be hurt, be raped, or be killed. But if you
look into it, Greek organization does have underage members. Colleges should not ban fraternities
and sororities. Greek organizations are still relevant on today's campus. Simon Riker, a freelance
musician said, "I learned a lot about myself and other people, more than I would have otherwise...
offered me a tremendous amount of opportunities and a vast social network" (Friedman 990). Many
fraternities are involved in their communities. The fraternity and sorority would hold a fundraiser
where they would raise more than $20 million for charity. Averagely most fraternities have a slightly
higher grade–point average from just the students who are not in a fraternity. The grade–point
average is approximately 2.912 (Friedman 990). Fraternity and sorority members is more likely to
be prepared after their graduation. The percent within the Greeks and the non–Greeks on how
prepared the students are after graduation is 37 percent Greek to 27 percent non–Greek (Friedman
990). Fraternities and sororities are seen as a way to further one's career after graduation (Friedman
987). Kimbrough adds, "we have to figure out how to give them life lessons to make them better

Fraternal Organizations
Don R. Fairfax Group 14W April 19, 2009 What is a fraternity? The definition found on
Wikipedia.org defines a fraternity (Latin frater : "brother") as a brotherhood, though the term usually
connotes a distinct or formal organization. The only true distinction between a fraternity and any
other form of social organization is the implication that the members freely associate as equals for a
mutually beneficial purpose, rather than because of a religious, governmental, commercial, or
familial bond, although there are fraternities dedicated to each of these topics. In many instances
fraternities are limited to male membership but this is not always the case, and there are mixed male
and female, and even wholly female, fraternities. For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Others in the group supported a traditional fraternal organization. The overwhelming sentiment was
dissatisfaction with lack of access to a literary society and members proposed to enlarge the
functions of the group. The fraternal supporters were in the minority and the society thereafter
organized with the intention of providing a literary, study, social, and support group for all minority
students who encountered social and academic racial prejudice. My desires to join a fraternity were
not so lofty. The first time I realized that I wanted to join a fraternity was during my sophomore year
at Bowling Green State University (BG for short). My best friend, Greg and I went to an
icebreaker/step show where various fraternities (and sororities) were highlighted. I was both envious
of the bond that seemed to be present between the "bruh's", and excited about becoming part of the
group. It was at that time that I knew that I wanted to join a fraternity. With the variety of fraternities
represented, I knew I had to make a decision as to which fraternity I should join. They all appeared
to have some similarities (dedication to the community, academic success, commitment to each
other, a sense of belonging, etc.), but I had to quickly come to grips as to what I wanted from them.
So, I had to do some soul searching as to which fraternity to join, the Kappas, Alphas, Sigmas or

Greek Life Should Be Banned Off Of College Campuses
Over several decades, Greek life has been an integral part of colleges and universities throughout the
United States. There is a high demand of "fitting in" in today's society and a question that students,
parents, and teachers alike often ask themselves is, "Does Greek life provide a more safe or harmful
environment?" With strong evidence, it is absolutely absurd to believe that fraternities and sororities
do more good than they do harm. Various statistics provide factual evidence as to why Greek life is a
toxic and dangerous environment for many young adults. Between the rape culture, hazing, and
delinquency linked to the students associated with Greek life, it is time that it comes to an end for
good so that students may have a more safe and enjoyable college experience. Fraternities and
Sororities should be banned off of college and university campuses due to the danger and drama
associated with them. First off, colleges and universities should ban Greek life on campuses for
obvious reasons, the first being rape culture. Sexual violence is not something to be swept under the
rug and brushed off. It continues to be a massive problem everywhere in America, and colleges are
no exception. An article by The Guardian states, "Frat brothers rape 300% more. One in five women
are sexually assaulted on campus" (Valenti, 2014). Looking at that statistic in real terms, 20% of
females on a college campus will be sexually assaulted before they graduate. This evidence clearly

Verbal Mediums And Music And Song Provide A Holistic...
In language and literature, verbal mediums such as music and song provide a holistic reflection of
the culture of a given community. Songs are products and practices that are able to shed light on the
philosophical, political, socio–cultural norms, and perspectives of a particular society.1 Thus, these
products shape the worldview of a cultural group. Within patriarchal subcultures, such as
fraternities, song lyrics reflect socially constructed dominant masculinities that members are
encouraged to adopt and engage in. From Rugby Road to Vinegar Hill, a drinking song made
prominent by U.Va's Glee Club in the late 1940's, captures the socially constructed masculinities
portrayed in leisure alcohol use and the cultural masculine preferences of the members. Music and
song are often used as an instrument to influence and amplify the hidden cultural values at the
associated audience. Hence, preferred elements of masculinity such as heavy drinking, comradery
and non–relational sexual encounters with women in the fraternal society are reinforced.2 From
Rugby Road to Vinegar Hill emphasizes how the expectations of hyper–masculinity are facilitated in
the fraternity culture and how gender violence in particular, sexual assault, is promoted and
perpetuated in association with alcohol while affirming a masculine mentality of power and
privilege within the group dynamic. In many patriarchal subgroups including fraternities, the
drinking culture provides a channel through

The Effects Of Hazing On College Campuses
Introduction Everybody has an idea of what hazing is. Some people say it's the action of one person
to another while trying to become a fraternity brother or a sorority sister. For my gap I have found
that there is a limited information about what the colleges do about hazing, and what colleges try to
cover these accidents of hazing. In this essay, I analyze the effects of hazing on college campuses,
and how the campuses try and cover the events of hazing. More importantly, the untold events that
cause major injuries or even death on campuses. Background To help me understand the definition
of what hazing is. Hazing has defined as; "any activity expected of someone joining a group that
humiliates, degrades, abuse or endangers, regardless of the person's willingness to participate. This
does not include activities such as rookies carrying the balls, the parties with community games, or
going out with your teammates, unless an atmosphere of humiliation, degradation, abuse or danger
arises" (Yvo, et al., 2015). For example, hazing practices are forcing people to "prove" that they are
worth to join a group or organization. Some people don't know that hazing even happens in middle,
the high school also in college. With hazing, it comes with having two types of people who
participate in these actions. But with having that, people should know the differences between
fraternities and sorority in the Greek like. What is Greek life? What is a fraternity? A fraternity is

The Causes And Effects Of Hazing In High School Students
Hazing is defined as any action taken or any situation created intentionally that causes
embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule and risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of a
group or team. Many people have become a victim of this horrific act. While it may start as a fun
tradition that is performed in different groups, it can become very tragic. Hazing takes place in high
schools, sports, and fraternities which has led to an increase in media attention due to victims
revealing personal accounts of hazing incidents. Hazing can take place anywhere whether it be high
school, college, sports, or fraternities. Other terms used for hazing are "hell week", "help week", and
"initiation". When one is trying to determine whether or not the situation is considered hazing there
are many signs he/she could look for. Some examples include the following questions: is alcohol
involved?, are there any risk of emotional or physical abuse?, and is there a risk of injury?
(University of North Carolina Wilmington). If the answer to any of these is yes, then it would be
considered some form of hazing. A study taking place at Alfred University shows that 1.5 million
high school students have experienced some form of hazing. Forty–eight percent of students who
belong to groups have reported to experiencing hazing behavior. These incidents can range
anywhere between alcohol abuse to forcing one to commit a crime. Victims of hazing may hide the
truth, whether they be embarrassed or they risk the chance of getting in a lot of trouble. While you
may not notice it at first there are always signs to look for when searching for hazing activity. Some
signs include excessive fatigue, wearing odd clothing, isolating themselves, skipping or missing
class, and feeling depressed. Many parents are not aware of their child experiencing hazing activity.
Although, now many of victims have decided to speak out about there encounters. One person that
decided to share his story is a student of the University of Connecticut named Colin. He had a
personal experience with hazing when his fraternity–brothers decided to send him and another
pledge flying through a car: The brother driving sped up to what felt like ninth miles an hour and

Persuasive Essay On Hazing In College
Hazing has been founded for over two–thousand years. It is used on school campuses, military, and
sports teams. Hazing can come in various activities such as humiliation, alcohol consumption,
physical abuse, and practical jokes. Many people believe that hazing should be eliminated from
campuses. Hazing is dangerous no questions asked. It may cause many problems in the long run
such as mental, physical, and emotional. Hazing in universities across the country has become such
a dangerous ritual that it's becoming more difficult to put an end to due to its development into a
popular "underground activity". Though a regular activity in the seventies, hazing, which is a
dangerous act of initiation to a group, or an organization. Has now become an activity that is banned
in forty–four states (Wagner,16). However, this ritual has not been stopped or become less severe. In
fact, it is becoming more dangerous. Since it has been banned, with many colleges imposing their
own penalties against those participating in it, many fraternities and sororities have pursued this
activity in an underground fashion. Since these groups have gone underground, some victims of

The result of this quote is, it persuades the reader to believe that sororities and fraternities are
something that needs reformation, if not from the word of an editor for one of the most popular
American newsletters, then from the trusted word of a college sociology professor. He also
successfully uses an appeal to Logic by including a fact about the blood alcohol level of a student
that had died, which states "the victim was 18, [and had] more than six times the legal limit for
driving and about two and a half times the amount of alcohol that can cause someone to black out.",
his adept use of this fact aids in the overall effectiveness of his editorial for the following reasons,
by including the statement of his blood alcohol content being twice the amount causing someone to
black out, lets the reader understand the severity of the students alcohol poisoning due to the
careless fraternity, in addition to adding his age to show how young he was, when he died,
inevitably creating an appeal to the emotion of empathy, and remorse, getting the reader to relate
and interact with the text more.

Penn State Faternity Analysis
Greek life can be looked upon with a closed mindset by many college students and graduates that
decided to not join the social movement that is brought upon by fraternities and sororities on college
campuses. An article written by Caitlin Flanagan for The Atlantic Daily takes a negative turn toward
Beta Theta Pi at Penn State University for many valid reasons such as: the reoccurring destruction of
their 8.5 million dollar renovated home, their degrading hazing acts which involve a pledge catching
bodily waste from a fraternity brother, the lack of compassion they have toward their fellow
fraternity brothers, and the lack of authoritative action taken to prevent this from happening again.

While the college may "shut down" the chapter, it "will 'recolonize' on the campus, and in a few
years the house will be back in business" allowing for these actions to reoccur and the dark side of
greek life envelop the campus once again. Beta Theta Pi's court–related actions toward the Piazza
family were uncivil because they proved how the fraternity only cared about their own reputation
and the money involved. Flanagan explains to her audience that the Piazza's "will discover how
thoroughly these organizations have indemnified themselves against culpability in such deaths" in
order to protect their own image. Flanagan also says how "the cycle will begin again," meaning that
these actions are continuously occurring in our nation. Which further proves her point that proper
legal action is rarely enforced when it comes to Greek life. The most disturbing point that Flanagan
brought up, is how only one Beta Theta Pi member showed concern for Tim Piazza while he was
nearing death on a couch. Being beaten by his "brothers", Tim's last minutes were spent being
ignored and abused all because of his social status of being a "pledge". Flanagan's point
demonstrates how the "brothers" involved in Tim's death showed zero compassion for their pledge
during his last minutes of

The Positive Impact Of Fraterrnities
The idea that Fraternities impact students in a negative way have been around for several years now.
Most people believe that fraternities offer no positive effects on a student's development. This is
because they have received a stereotype of being organizations that only care about parties and
women. To the people who are not in them or are not educated in depth about fraternities are not
aware of what all these organizations provide. The common question is: do fraternities offer any
opportunities for students to grow and an individual and provide career development options? Most
people like to stick to their believes that fraternity members only care about parity and are not well–
rounded people even though there are several successful people the world who have been in a
Fraternity. In this paper, I will evaluate several sources to determine if fraternity life has a positive
impact on student's life and their career development. The sources I have chosen offer different
viewpoint on if fraternities are beneficial to students. The sources are by people that are well
educated and involved in the subject of fraternities and there is even a source by fraternity members
on how they have been affected by their fraternity. The most widely accepted perception of
fraternities is that they do not behoove students in any way. This, however, could not be farther from
the truth. Students who join a fraternity are offered several to grow leadership skills, social skills

Membership In Fraternities And Sororities
The decrease in membership in fraternities and sororities has occurred due to negative
representation in media and criminal reputations. However, students should join fraternities and
sororities because together they can do work for charities, volunteer, and fundraise. Students should
also become members to be a part of a group life in which you are essentially guaranteed lifelong
friendships and a thriving social life. Although the monetary cost may be high and the superficial
representation in media makes fraternity and sorority members look daft and trouble–making, the
benefits to membership include helping out communities and being held responsible for your
academic and extracurricular activities. The words fraternity and sorority can define any group of
men and women that come together to form a club, but the words are well–known for college Greek
life organizations. Fraternities and sororities are known for their private imitations and rules, which
sometimes can only be learned about by becoming a part of the club. The College of William and
Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia is known for the first college fraternity. The fraternities developed

enacted anti–hazing laws (Beitman). Fraternities and sororities are known to have a bad reputation

Tough Guise 2
Rationale For my written task 1, I will write a satirical article describing a fraternity at a US
university. The subject matter will be mainly about masculinity, and how it would look if the ideal
traits of a masculine person were changed. I will be working with Part One of the English HL
course, specifically under the topic of language and gender. The text that I will be working with will
be the documentary that we watched, "Tough Guise 2". The task is meant to explore masculinity
through the lens of Learning Outcome 1.2, which is "Analyze the impact of language changes".To
do this, I am going to change the language and ideas that are generally perpetuated from American
University Fraternity culture from chauvinistic and sexually aggressive to feminist and respectful.
The reason that I chose a satire is because I think that some ideas that Fraternities push on to their

highest level of masculinity, with activities including mass sexual assault, alcohol poisoning, and
even team–building activities like Cocaine trafficking to really prepare them for the workforce.
While some may argue that these activities are not as beneficial to man's future as the altruistic acts

Why Do Universities Have The Right To Keep Fraternities?
Since the 1770's, fraternities have existed to bring men collectively to teach about brotherhood and
service. But over time that has started to include: wild, raging parties, sex, binge drinking, hazing
and finding superiority over non–Greek affiliated college students. Fraternities have existed for
hundreds of years and countless stories and studies have established them to be dangerous and
exorbitant. So exactly why do we keep fraternities around? And what supremacy does universities
have over Greek organizations to protect the image of their school and the students that attend?
Fraternity men are in ample charge of their actions, but when their actions cause impairment that
gravely reflects on the school, action needs to be taken. This is why Universities have the right to
step in and ought to step in before situations become uncontrollable regarding Greek life. Author

the deep power that fraternities exert over their host universities and the complex mix of
institutional priorities in which fraternities are important stakeholders" (Flanagan). The answer is
that there is a line that all Universities have to draw between what is allowed and what isn't,
regarding the students, even if they can't directly alter Greek life. Their job is to protect the image of
the school to control degree value, and allowing the adults to be adults, and to balance both is

When I think about service and how I can play a role in it, I think about community service. Since I
have been at Bethany I have been in a couple of different organizations and community service is
always a major focus. Right now, I am the active Pledge Master for the fraternity, Gamma Kappa

make the people in my organization the best that they can be. There are multiple services that we
provide for the community, such as, volunteering for churches, helping out with residents yard care
and going to the retirement home to talk to and comfort the people who are living there. As of right
now, our frat is on probation, because last year we didn't meet the community requirements set by
the school. Since we are on probation and I am now a leader in the organization, I have been a part
of setting up a more activities and services that will help out the community. The other leaders of the
frat and I have worked hard on finding events that will help out the community to the best of our

I have personally been positively influenced by a sorority that has permanently changed my life

Should College Students Join Fraternities Or Fraternity
Being a sister or brother of a greek house comes with great responsibilities. Being a part of a
sorority or fraternity consumes students time with events and parties, which prevents them from
having enough time to complete their school work. Attendance is required despite having academic
responsibilities. Many sororities and fraternities make it mandatory to attend most of the greek
events that will go on throughout the school year. In the article Should College Students Join
Fraternities or Sororities, Schwarz explains that fraternities and sororities, "absorb time that could be
better spent on academic work and extracurricular activities". For many students, college life will be
challenging at first, having to deal with all the work, and keeping up with classes that might be very
rigorous depending on the major they decide to pursue. Joining a sorority or fraternity will take up
most of the time that could be spent getting work done, with social gatherings, parties, or just
hanging out with other members of the same house. In an article by Megan Tackett, a former
sorority member gives her experience on her greek life, she write about how she spent, "10–15
hours a week dedicated to the sorority". This shows that a lot of time goes into being a member of
the greek society, although there are only about 168 hours in a week, by subtract the hours spent

Why Do College Cliques
College Cliques Students will be going to college soon, and it will be a whole new world. Upcoming
freshman will see new faces, personalities, and looks all in the same place. High school has cliques;
however, a college has more. Most students are grouped into cliques because they have similar
personalities and backgrounds, so it makes them feel at home. A college has a massive variety of
cliques; the most famous are frat, sorority, athletes, and honor. Frat One type of clique is the frat
boys. Frat is a man who is in a college fraternity. A fraternity is a group of men who are bonded
together by brotherhood. Certain things attract guys to this type of brotherhood. Personality is the
key factor, because all the men are similar in this. Outgoing, friendly, and bold are some the
personalities present. Frats can be broken into multiple houses, such as Farmhouse, Kappa Sigma,
and Alpha Pie Alpha. The frats are known for their parties. Brothers and beautiful women are the

Advantages Of A Fraternity

  • 1. Advantages Of A Fraternity Advantages of a Fraternity I was never a fan of fraternities. At first, I thought people who joined were just after the impression of other people that they look cool because they have a fraternity. In addition there are alot of hazing issues reported on media, which tells people that joining a fraternity is dangerous. Despite the negative stigma against fraternities, the majority of the society will never truly know how fraternities teach individuals to appreciate hard work, support and help each other, and develop social organizational, and study skills. Initiation teaches individuals to appreciate hard work as well as balance their time and work with a team. Initiation is the action of receiving someone into a concealed organization, typically with a ritual. The problem is most people associate initiation with hazing, which is not all the time true. The purpose of the initiation is to prepare the individual for whatever challenges they may encounter in their lives, besides knowing the individuals determination to join the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ofcourse there are advantages and disadvantages. Being in a fraternity means that you are brothers aiming for the same goal. Members learn the true spirit of brotherhood, loyalty, equality and service. Although most of these values are taught in our families, members get to know the deeper meaning of each values. I am not saying that fraternities are more important than families. In a fraternity members are constantly taught these values, which families are not able to do because they are not always around especially during college. This is the purpose why fraternity brothers are around. Not to mention, the support also coming from the alumni. Members establish strong connections which will not only benefit them in their college life but also even when they already finish college. The only disadvantage I see against fraternities is the negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Why Fraternities Should be Banned Essay Recently, the idea of partaking in a fraternity has become more prevalent. Young adults are captivated with wanting to live the Greek life. The clothes and parties seem to drawn in teens like a magnet. However what these teens do not realize is the terrible things associated with fraternities. Many fraternities have a reputation for turning college students into drunks, treating women vulgarly, enacting violent hazing against other fraternity members and disrupting the true reason why students go to college. For these reasons fraternities should be banned altogether on college campuses. First of all, fraternities have proven to be a serious reason for underage drinking and binge drinking. These young adults have far less supervision and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Men taking advantage of women is considered a social norm. Also, When fraternity members admitted to doing things that by law are considered rape they did not believe that they were rapist. They insist that if a girl is intoxicated then they are still able to consent to sex. Granted not all Greeks are this way. Many fraternity members treat women respectfully and contribute greatly to bettering the college experience. The problem is too many offenders do exist and they have ruined the once credible reputation of fraternities everywhere. Furthermore, fraternities are infamous for their requirement to pledge in order to join the brotherhood. Although the specific acts inflicted on pledges is known only by members of fraternity, it is commonly known that hazing is part of the initiation. The pledges have to complete a series of humiliating and sometime dangerous rituals in order to join. They could be forced to consume excessive amount of alcohols and drugs, or be physically beaten or be publicly humiliated. Little known fact, white fraternities generally use alcohol for hazing while black fraternities result to physical violence. In a survey conducted by Dr. Susan Lipkins "31% of Fraternity and sorority members agree that a significant element in an initiation rite is humiliation." "Also, many of the Greek Leaders agree that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Ancient Greek Fraternity In The 1930's Like the old ancient ritual of unity in the ancient Greek polis, people join a group to belong and preformed tasks that achieve the overall goals of these organizations. In these organizations, students celebrated a bond of unity among their fellow classmates. In the 1930's, Texas Lutheran College had a variety of clubs and fraternities that its students belong to on campus. In these organizations, students participated in activities associated with a club. These events and tasks improved the student's traits and talents as well as associate themselves with people who share the same interests. The members of the fraternities and clubs installed a sense of values and culture within their members. Like the ancient Greek polis, fraternities and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A fraternity is "a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest, or pleasure" This organization is a network of students that help each other to serve on campus. Like other colleges, Texas Lutheran College had fraternities. During the 1930s, students at the campus joined these organizations to help satisfy their sense of belonging and create a network of people to help them out. The most notable fraternity in 1930's is the Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society/ fraternity for students who made good grades. Members were eligible for membership only if "they were within the highest ten percent.", and "Elected by the faculty of the school." This organization had thrown together activities for its members such as picnics and debates. During picnics, these members usually ate lunch and played games. The Phi Theta Kappa hosted debates over issues corresponding to the time. They hosted a debate among its members over "world peace" as a fun activity. Other fraternities were centered on a student's career choice. For example, the Alpha Delta Sigma, a pre–medical fraternity that focused mainly on students who were entering the medical field and Sigma Tau Sigma, a pre–engineering society that focused on students who planned to enter the engineering field. These fraternities help establish a network of people from the same field. These fraternities throw banquets for its members to grant awards and elect new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. College Fraternities And Sororities Serve As Exclusive One of the historic facets of university life, among special interest clubs, sports teams, and volunteer organizations is Greek life. College fraternities and sororities serve as exclusive groups denoted by Greek letters where men and women bond, forming "brotherhoods" and "sisterhoods" with fellow members, getting involved on campus, practicing philanthropy and community service, and creating long–lasting friendships. At face value, Greek life seems like an ideal environment for all entering college students who want to get involved and socialize; however, there are many complexities and undertones that can be attributed to the Greek system. Greek organizations are known for their competitive "rush" process where prospective members undergo an interview process in multiple social settings to receive bids from fraternity and sorority houses (Nelson 8). Sororities, in particular, are usually extremely selective during rush, as they must "[maintain] a specific appearance" as a whole, and bid on aspiring girls who mirror the appearance and demeanor of the sorority (Nelson 7). Even though this superficiality exists in sororities, some affirm that they foster a sense of community and support (Farrington 22) and promote self–efficacy and a thirst for academic excellence (Thompson 4). Controversies like hazing, alcohol consumption at parties, and the establishment of a social hierarchy of female students in sororities have brought the topic of Greek ... • 9. The Positive Influences of College Fraternities Essay The Positive Influences of College Fraternities According to Webster's New World Dictionary the definition of a stereotype is: a fixed or conventional notion or concept. While attending college I have noticed that stereotypes are a part of every day life. Day in and day out people are judged for who they are and what they believe in. These stereotypes are especially relevant in fraternities. The negative stereotypes associated with college fraternities have recently been blown way out of proportion and commonly overshadow the many positive aspects and contributions of Greek life. The Greek system offers men and women the opportunity to compliment their college education by better rounding themselves and giving back to our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Negatives are far more desired by our society even though they are a small part of the puzzle. Society needs to be educated on is the true nature and character of the college fraternity. Several fraternities across the country and in Canada praise themselves on community service. According to Jeff Celieo, president of the Interfraternity Council at BGSU, "In the past our community has given us so much, it is now our turn to give back to them." Through these projects thousands of dollars have been raised to support worthy causes. Just last year the Sigma Chi Fraternity raised $2000.00 for the Children's Miracle Network branch at the Medical College of Ohio. In another effort the Greek community of BGSU joined together and created Dance Marathon. Just this last weekend Dance Marathon raised close to $160,000.00 for Children's Miracle Network. The men and women of these organizations participate in events such as these for a reason. We want to give back to our community and make people like you proud of what we stand for. The men of fraternal life strive for tradition. Recently several national chapters have restored their traditional values which mostly put emphasis on the ideals of men of intellect and good character. An excellent example of this would be the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon live by the motto, The True Gentleman. According to their web site on ... • 11. Fraternity And Sorority College students have many life altering questions they must answer through the journey of further education. From a student's major, living circumstance, classes, and getting involved on campus, it can start to get stressful if there are mixed signals about what they are getting into. Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet people and improve skills needed after graduation. A student might choose to be involved in Greek life because of the parties, friends, and job application quirks down the road (Joining a Fraternity, np). The outcome involves those things, but it also involves leadership traits, lifelong relationships, the ability to surpass the negative public perception of Fraternity and Sorority men and women, and keep up good grades. While involved in Greek life, each chapter has an executive council which is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a student does not have that certain GPA requirement they get dropped from recruitment before the chapter even considers looking at anything else. Students must maintain a certain GPA to stay in the chapter. Most fraternities or sororities have weekly study groups. My chapter has a Geek of the Week, which goes to whoever makes the highest grades on major tests. If a student's GPA drops under a certain score, then they have to have a certain amount of study hours or note checks until their grade goes back up. If their GPA is so low for a long amount of time they might get kicked out of the fraternity or sorority. Students knowing that they have to keep their grades up for a fraternity or sorority could help them graduate. "A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non–fraternity/sorority persons graduate" (Fraternity and Sorority Facts, np). • 13. The World Spun Is Every Direction Around Me The world spun is every direction around me. There was a sharp, shooting pain in my calf and shoulder. I was soaking wet and coughing water, I could hear faded voices screaming. My whole body felt like it was on fire, it became unbearable and I blacked out. It all started on a cold December night. It didn't start out bad, but I can't say the same for how it ended. It was Delilah's annual Christmas party, the music was blasting and we were all having a great time, until they showed up. The "it" crew, the girls who wore short skirts and high heel and acted like they ruled the world. "What are you doing here?" I asked in a demanding tone. "Oh, nothing. We just didn't have anything better to do tonight." Said their unofficial leader, Jessica. If this was any other party, we would have walked away and let the plastics have their fun, but this was not where they belong, this was our night. "How about we play a game, ladies?" I suggested, "It's called Triple Dog. We dare you to do some outrageous task, and if you don't, you leave. And the other way around." "Well pack your bags, this won't take long." Jessica said. I didn't know it at the time, but I had just made the worst decision of my life. We went into one of the bedrooms in the house, and huddled in us on one side, them on the other. "You can go first." I said in a fake polite voice. "Ok then, then we can get back to the party. Emily, I'll dare you." I was surprised she didn't pick me, given that we had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My back was pressed against the wall, partly because I couldn't stand up straight on my own. You 're a good girl... The obnoxious music penetrated deep past my ear drum and pumped through me. The stench of sweat and stale foamy beer consumed the air. Blackness engulfed me and all the other one hundred clammy bodies in the room. Their erratic body movements were revealed to the wandering eyes only when the disco ball flashed its blinding lights on them. Can 't let it get past me. You're far from plastic. Talk about getting blasted... He was leaning against the wall right next to me. His hand was wrapped around my waist, which pulled me closer and closer to him. I thought nothing of it. I hate these blurred lines... Alcohol and adrenaline spread their dizzying magic through my head. I tried to hold onto my clarity, but I watched myself nervously laughing at his every word and swaying back and forth more and more often. That August day I set out into Collegetown to assert my independence from my parents by experiencing for the first time the so–called magic and wonder of fraternity parties without my parents' consent. The ostentatiousness, elation, and novelty that define college parties in movies as a place where college students blow off steam allured me; college parties are depicted in pop culture as the quintessential Friday night. ... The show, "7th Heaven," started when I was in 6th grade, in 1999, and I hardly ever miss an episode. Each episode holds a life lesson that everyone can connect with in some way. "7th Heaven" has captured the hearts of television audiences with its witty, charming and heartwarming stories and has been praised for providing high–quality entertainment for all ages. Chronicling the many complex problems of growing up in the world today, the young adults on "7th Heaven" are exposed to issues ranging from dating crises to teen suicide, sibling rivalry to gang violence. Mary decides to disobey her parents and sneak out with Carrie. When the two arrive at the party, Mary and Carrie are offered beers upon their entrance. Mary declines politely, while Carrie gladly takes the beer from one of the frat boys who is hosting the party. While inside the party, one of the girls inside recognizes Mary and says, "Isn 't that Reverend Camden 's daughter?" The group of girls huddle up and start discussing how shocked they are to see Mary at the party. The girls are shocked because it isn 't typical to see a Christian pastor 's daughter at a fraternity party. The girls who are talking about Mary only reinforce the idea that people think kids of pastors, or policemen, or the President, don 't make bad choices. 7th Heaven must address this issue of partying in order to make the show seem more like the realistic situations high school and college students are faced with every day. By putting Mary in this situation, the show reinforces the belief that a pastor 's daughter does not make decisions like the one Mary made about sneaking out. This belief is prevalent in the reality that we live in because the television media makes it so evident by showing us how we should act when situations like these arise. Why Hazing Should Be Allowed In College College life brings many thoughts to mind friendships, football , pizza, late nights, parties, fraternities, sororities, as well as racial discrimination, binge drinking, hazing and dying. The latter part of this list may not come naturally to most people, but they are frightening realities of the Greek system. Parents send their children to college assuming they will be in a safe, educational environment while enjoying all the benefits campus life has to offer, including fraternities and sororities. The frequent focus fraternities and sororities place on alcohol encourages excessive consumption, unfortunately causing the development of alcoholism and incidents of alcohol poisoning. The term hazing is defined as "any conduct or method of initiation into any student organization, whether on public or private property, which willfully or recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of any student or other person" (UMass). • 21. Colleges Should Dispose Of Fraternities Many Americans believe that fraternities embody the college experience and that they are essential for every student. Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. Fraternities can actually encourage exclusivity and discriminatory behavior. They also serve no purpose that other organizations do not already offer. Therefore, colleges should dispose of fraternities. Fraternities encourage exclusivity and discrimination, so they must be banned. As Stephanie Saul states in her New York Times article, "Harvard Restrictions Could Reshape Exclusive Student Clubs," fraternities can "foster an atmosphere of misogyny, sexual misconduct, and entitlement" which led to the restrictions enacted by Harvard University and other colleges across the ... • 23. Should Fraternities And Sororities Be Banned? The question about Greek life on campus is whether if fraternities and sororities should be banned. The reasoning behind that is because of all the sexual assault, hazing, and binge drinking happening on campus. All of those problems are causing people to be hurt, be raped, or be killed. But if you look into it, Greek organization does have underage members. Colleges should not ban fraternities and sororities. Greek organizations are still relevant on today's campus. Simon Riker, a freelance musician said, "I learned a lot about myself and other people, more than I would have otherwise... offered me a tremendous amount of opportunities and a vast social network" (Friedman 990). Many fraternities are involved in their communities. The fraternity and sorority would hold a fundraiser where they would raise more than $20 million for charity. Averagely most fraternities have a slightly higher grade–point average from just the students who are not in a fraternity. The grade–point average is approximately 2.912 (Friedman 990). Fraternity and sorority members is more likely to be prepared after their graduation. The percent within the Greeks and the non–Greeks on how prepared the students are after graduation is 37 percent Greek to 27 percent non–Greek (Friedman 990). • 25. Fraternal Organizations Don R. Fairfax Group 14W April 19, 2009 What is a fraternity? The definition found on Wikipedia.org defines a fraternity (Latin frater : "brother") as a brotherhood, though the term usually connotes a distinct or formal organization. The only true distinction between a fraternity and any other form of social organization is the implication that the members freely associate as equals for a mutually beneficial purpose, rather than because of a religious, governmental, commercial, or familial bond, although there are fraternities dedicated to each of these topics. In many instances fraternities are limited to male membership but this is not always the case, and there are mixed male and female, and even wholly female, fraternities. For ... The overwhelming sentiment was dissatisfaction with lack of access to a literary society and members proposed to enlarge the functions of the group. The fraternal supporters were in the minority and the society thereafter organized with the intention of providing a literary, study, social, and support group for all minority students who encountered social and academic racial prejudice. My desires to join a fraternity were not so lofty. The first time I realized that I wanted to join a fraternity was during my sophomore year at Bowling Green State University (BG for short). My best friend, Greg and I went to an icebreaker/step show where various fraternities (and sororities) were highlighted. I was both envious of the bond that seemed to be present between the "bruh's", and excited about becoming part of the group. It was at that time that I knew that I wanted to join a fraternity. With the variety of fraternities represented, I knew I had to make a decision as to which fraternity I should join. They all appeared to have some similarities (dedication to the community, academic success, commitment to each other, a sense of belonging, etc.), but I had to quickly come to grips as to what I wanted from them. So, I had to do some soul searching as to which fraternity to join, the Kappas, Alphas, Sigmas or Omegas and which would be the best fit for me. I had other friends ... • 29. Greek Life Should Be Banned Off Of College Campuses Over several decades, Greek life has been an integral part of colleges and universities throughout the United States. There is a high demand of "fitting in" in today's society and a question that students, parents, and teachers alike often ask themselves is, "Does Greek life provide a more safe or harmful environment?" With strong evidence, it is absolutely absurd to believe that fraternities and sororities do more good than they do harm. Various statistics provide factual evidence as to why Greek life is a toxic and dangerous environment for many young adults. Between the rape culture, hazing, and delinquency linked to the students associated with Greek life, it is time that it comes to an end for good so that students may have a more safe and enjoyable college experience. Fraternities and Sororities should be banned off of college and university campuses due to the danger and drama associated with them. First off, colleges and universities should ban Greek life on campuses for obvious reasons, the first being rape culture. Sexual violence is not something to be swept under the rug and brushed off. It continues to be a massive problem everywhere in America, and colleges are no exception. An article by The Guardian states, "Frat brothers rape 300% more. One in five women are sexually assaulted on campus" (Valenti, 2014). Looking at that statistic in real terms, 20% of females on a college campus will be sexually assaulted before they graduate. • 31. Verbal Mediums And Music And Song Provide A Holistic... In language and literature, verbal mediums such as music and song provide a holistic reflection of the culture of a given community. Songs are products and practices that are able to shed light on the philosophical, political, socio–cultural norms, and perspectives of a particular society.1 Thus, these products shape the worldview of a cultural group. Within patriarchal subcultures, such as fraternities, song lyrics reflect socially constructed dominant masculinities that members are encouraged to adopt and engage in. From Rugby Road to Vinegar Hill, a drinking song made prominent by U.Va's Glee Club in the late 1940's, captures the socially constructed masculinities portrayed in leisure alcohol use and the cultural masculine preferences of the members. Music and song are often used as an instrument to influence and amplify the hidden cultural values at the associated audience. Hence, preferred elements of masculinity such as heavy drinking, comradery and non–relational sexual encounters with women in the fraternal society are reinforced.2 From Rugby Road to Vinegar Hill emphasizes how the expectations of hyper–masculinity are facilitated in the fraternity culture and how gender violence in particular, sexual assault, is promoted and perpetuated in association with alcohol while affirming a masculine mentality of power and privilege within the group dynamic. • 35. The Effects Of Hazing On College Campuses Introduction Everybody has an idea of what hazing is. Some people say it's the action of one person to another while trying to become a fraternity brother or a sorority sister. For my gap I have found that there is a limited information about what the colleges do about hazing, and what colleges try to cover these accidents of hazing. In this essay, I analyze the effects of hazing on college campuses, and how the campuses try and cover the events of hazing. More importantly, the untold events that cause major injuries or even death on campuses. Background To help me understand the definition of what hazing is. Hazing has defined as; "any activity expected of someone joining a group that humiliates, degrades, abuse or endangers, regardless of the person's willingness to participate. This does not include activities such as rookies carrying the balls, the parties with community games, or going out with your teammates, unless an atmosphere of humiliation, degradation, abuse or danger arises" (Yvo, et al., 2015). For example, hazing practices are forcing people to "prove" that they are worth to join a group or organization. Some people don't know that hazing even happens in middle, the high school also in college. With hazing, it comes with having two types of people who participate in these actions. But with having that, people should know the differences between fraternities and sorority in the Greek like. What is Greek life? What is a fraternity? A fraternity is define as; ... • 37. The Causes And Effects Of Hazing In High School Students Hazing is defined as any action taken or any situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule and risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of a group or team. Many people have become a victim of this horrific act. While it may start as a fun tradition that is performed in different groups, it can become very tragic. Hazing takes place in high schools, sports, and fraternities which has led to an increase in media attention due to victims revealing personal accounts of hazing incidents. Hazing can take place anywhere whether it be high school, college, sports, or fraternities. Other terms used for hazing are "hell week", "help week", and "initiation". When one is trying to determine whether or not the situation is considered hazing there are many signs he/she could look for. Some examples include the following questions: is alcohol involved?, are there any risk of emotional or physical abuse?, and is there a risk of injury? (University of North Carolina Wilmington). If the answer to any of these is yes, then it would be considered some form of hazing. A study taking place at Alfred University shows that 1.5 million high school students have experienced some form of hazing. Forty–eight percent of students who belong to groups have reported to experiencing hazing behavior. These incidents can range anywhere between alcohol abuse to forcing one to commit a crime. Victims of hazing may hide the truth, whether they be embarrassed or they risk the chance of getting in a lot of trouble. While you may not notice it at first there are always signs to look for when searching for hazing activity. Some signs include excessive fatigue, wearing odd clothing, isolating themselves, skipping or missing class, and feeling depressed. Many parents are not aware of their child experiencing hazing activity. Although, now many of victims have decided to speak out about there encounters. One person that decided to share his story is a student of the University of Connecticut named Colin. He had a personal experience with hazing when his fraternity–brothers decided to send him and another pledge flying through a car: The brother driving sped up to what felt like ninth miles an hour and ... • 39. Persuasive Essay On Hazing In College Hazing has been founded for over two–thousand years. It is used on school campuses, military, and sports teams. Hazing can come in various activities such as humiliation, alcohol consumption, physical abuse, and practical jokes. Many people believe that hazing should be eliminated from campuses. Hazing is dangerous no questions asked. It may cause many problems in the long run such as mental, physical, and emotional. Hazing in universities across the country has become such a dangerous ritual that it's becoming more difficult to put an end to due to its development into a popular "underground activity". Though a regular activity in the seventies, hazing, which is a dangerous act of initiation to a group, or an organization. Has now become an activity that is banned in forty–four states (Wagner,16). However, this ritual has not been stopped or become less severe. In fact, it is becoming more dangerous. Since it has been banned, with many colleges imposing their own penalties against those participating in it, many fraternities and sororities have pursued this activity in an underground fashion. Since these groups have gone underground, some victims of these rituals have been injured and subsequently died. This is due to the "hazers" not seeking medical treatment for the victims, for fear that they may be fined or charged by police or campus authorities. One estimate states that at least sixty–five students have died between the years of 1978 and 1996 from beatings and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An article written by Caitlin Flanagan for The Atlantic Daily takes a negative turn toward Beta Theta Pi at Penn State University for many valid reasons such as: the reoccurring destruction of their 8.5 million dollar renovated home, their degrading hazing acts which involve a pledge catching bodily waste from a fraternity brother, the lack of compassion they have toward their fellow fraternity brothers, and the lack of authoritative action taken to prevent this from happening again. Flanagan explains to her audience that the Piazza's "will discover how thoroughly these organizations have indemnified themselves against culpability in such deaths" in order to protect their own image. Flanagan also says how "the cycle will begin again," meaning that these actions are continuously occurring in our nation. Which further proves her point that proper legal action is rarely enforced when it comes to Greek life. The most disturbing point that Flanagan brought up, is how only one Beta Theta Pi member showed concern for Tim Piazza while he was nearing death on a couch. I have been to multiple campuses and see many parties put on by all walks of life I have seen more than just frat boys drinking, granted there are individuals that may belong to a fraternity but this does not represent the fraternities as a whole. According to NIH (National Institute of Health) "42%,or over 3 million of the 8 million students attending colleges in the U.S. have consumed five or more drinks during a single drinking occasion within the past 30 days. " This is problem college wide, hell there are even houses here that have gotten nicknames so people know which house party they are talking about. But the fact is that these houses tend to have parties every weekend and some during week days. Now don't get me wrong, it is ok to have a party everyonce in a while, in fact we tend to have one a semester ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gender Roles In College Fraternity One in ten American students attending a college or university will join a Greek organization during their academic enrollment.1 While Greek affiliations only constitute an average of 8.5 percent of American college students, Greek social organizations produce a disproportionately large percentage of leadership representatives in prominent and influential positions of business, politics, and legal sector authority.2 As more Greeks advance to positions in the top echelons of society, the domination of these elite realms creates a desire to understand the inherent nature of fraternity and sorority culture. He was the CEO of Sentec, a biochemistry company dealing with olfactory products; as scents and pheromones. His whole life, as it related to his work and the company, was stored on the hard drive of the electrically driven machine sitting in front of him. His laptop held many of the company 's dirty little secrets, along with the most valuable product information available. Emails, correspondence with other executives, employee histories, background checks, end of month and year datum, everything on the shared–directory files which adorned the drives "A" through "ZZ." Currently, it showed his email, buddy list and a word document he was typing. Niles wasn 't doing company work. In the background, symphonic music set the tone. The office was rather regular, just the way he liked it. Behind him, a wall of awards and certificates; Niles had been the face of Sentec ever since its inception in 1997 and ever since its total coup de etas of the fragrance industry from mid–1998 on. The awards, however, were careful not to cover up the bronzed motto hanging eternally over his head: "Making SCENTS of your life!" Click click click, the keys beneath Niles 's fingers were pressed one by one. Niles stared intently at his screen. Anyone passing by the office at that precise moment would have the same thought: Wow, he must be working on something huge! In reality, Niles was writing to Jack Prowl, regional ...
