Ezra Pound Research Paper
The Young Genius: Ezra Pound's influenced poetry on Benito Mussolini and the Fascist movement,
time of his stay in St. Elizabeth's Hospital and the concept of Imagism.
"If a nation's literature declines, the nation atrophies and decays." (Ezra Pound Quotes) Ezra Pound
was not a man of many words, but he certainly did have a knack for turning simple words into
something beautiful. Pounds' poetry was influenced by his fascination with Benito Mussolini and
the Fascist movement, the time of his stay in St. Elizabeth's Hospital and the concept of Imagism.
It is safe to say that Ezra Pound did not live a boring life growing up. He was born on October 30,
1885 in Hailey, Idaho. However, he was brought up in Wyncote, Philadelphia. At the small ... Show

"Canto 13"
If a man have not order within him
He cannot spread order about him;
And if a man have not order within him
His family will not act with due order;
And if the prince have not order within him
He cannot put order in his dominions. (Lines 46–51)
In the previous excerpt of Canto 13, the three literacy terms refrain; anaphora and a hint of didactic
poetry are involved. The word and phrase order appear in every line of the excerpt. It is repeated to
not only get the meaning across, but to make a significant indent in the readers' mind while reading
the poem. The hint of didactic poetry is shown in this poem, I believe, because Pound is telling the
reader without order you cannot do a few things such as spread order about him, family will not act,
and one cannot put order in his dominions. In a way, that is teaching the pros of "order."
From this poem I can infer that Ezra Pound is stating that whether or not he is ruled by an
imperialistic power: everyday is going to be the same, for everybody. The last line "Imperial power
is? And to us what is it?" means that no matter government is enforced, their everyday life is not
going to change.
"Cantos XLIX: For The Seven Lakes"
Sun up; work
Sundown; to rest
Dig well and drink of the water
Dig field; eat of the grain
Imperial power is? And to us what is it?
The fourth; the dimension of stillness.
And the power over wild beasts. (Lines 42–48)

Dantes Inferno Essay
In The Inferno – Dante’s Immortal Drama of a Journey Through Hell, Dante allows the
reader to experience his every move. His mastery of language, his sensitivity to the sights and
sounds of nature, and his infinite store of knowledge allow him to capture and draw the reader into
the realm of the terrestrial hell. In Canto 6, the Gluttons; Canto 13, the Violent Against Themselves;
and Canto 23, the Hypocrites; Dante excels in his detailed portrayal of the supernatural world of
hell. In each canto, Dante combines his mastery of language with his sensitivity to the sights and
sounds of nature to set the stage. He then reinforces the image with examples that call upon his
infinite store of knowledge, and thus draw a parallel that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Dante immediately lets the reader understand the new environment that he is now experiencing by
describing “Its foliage was not verdant, but nearly black. / The unhealthy branches, gnarled
and warped and tangled, / bore poison thorns instead of fruit” (119). This quote introduces
the reader to the woods of suicide and gives them an excellent picture of what he is seeing and how
he portrays the sin they committed. Due to these sinners abuse to themselves they are now in the
form of trees whereas they can no longer hurt themselves, but are often hurt by others who blatantly
disregard their existence, as they once did themselves. Dante then goes on to explain the terror of
the harpies who eat away at the branches and leaves of these sinners. He says “Their wings
are wide, their feet clawed, their huge bellies / covered with feathers, their necks and faces
human” (119). This shows the reader the grotesqueries of these violent birds, and like
Cerberus in Canto 6, the reader can vividly imagine how these harpies physically appear to Dante.
Dante continues to help the reader understand the sounds he hears as he says, “They croak
eternally in the unnatural trees” (119). This quote gives the reader an idea of the incessant
sounds that these victims are producing, as a result of the pain they are going through. He then
analogizes the broken souls of the victim’s pain simply by breaking the branch of a

The Pisan Cantos
This paper seeks to analyze the juxtaposition of different images in Canto LXXXIII. What makes
The Cantos interesting is the combination languages such as Chinese characters as well as words in
Greek, German and Italian. The text also includes many allusions to historical and mythological
figures and events from different time periods. The part named The Pisan Cantos was written at the
end of the World War II. While writing Cantos, Pound was kept in Disciplinary Training Center by
US army. He was a supporter of Mussolini which caused him to be accused of treachery, and put
into a cage. In his book, Moments of Moments: Aspects of the Literary Epiphany, Wim Tigges
suggests that; As is well known, Pound's epic took a different turn, in many respects, ... Show more

Eriugenian idea, "omnia, quae sunt, lumina sunt" means "everything that exists is light" which is
followed by "whatever." This "whatever" evokes a kind of indifference in readers' minds. Then
Pound gives references to Eriugena's "bones" being dug in the time of Simon IV de Montfort
l'Amaury. Pound perfectly connects the ideas about Eriugena and his death by giving reference to
Simon IV de Montfort l'Amaury. "Eriugena's Neoplatonic ideas and his theories were exploited by
the Albigensian heretics, he was found guilty of being a heretic by Pope Honorius III" (Terrell 459).
This part suggests that no matter how hilarious Eurigena's verses were, these magical words could
not prevent his tragedy, he was misunderstood and his ideas were misused. Then, Pound turns to
Baudelaire's Les Paradis n'est pas artificial which means "Paradise is not artificial," and to W. B.
Yeats. Here, "Uncle William" refers to W.B. Yeats. He ridicules Yeats stating that while searching
for a higher truth, Yeats is unable to see beauty of the material world. He also adds that Yeats is in
the search of something, but "whatever" that something is, the search is aimless. Pound implicitly
states that natural reality is not inferior to the higher reality, they complete each other. Yeats fails to
grasp the beauty of a statue of the Virgin over the door of the cathedral of Notre

Summary Of Pablo Neruda's Ode To A Large Tuna In The Market
Pablo Neruda's Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market recalls the unfortunate demise of a beautiful
creature, with seeing amazing visuals of the vast oceans and the "depths of the sea", is found dead
surrounded by "lettuces", "carrots", "grapes", and "among the vegetables", ready to be sold. The
subject, a tuna, is a simple, everyday food item that most overpass without giving much thought.
Contrary, Pablo is known for his odd narration of subjects most would never attend towards, such as
Ode to an Artichoke or Ode to Salt. Furthermore, publicly displaying his appreciation for life and all
the gifts it has to offer. Consequently, with its simplistic nature, Pablo was able to construct an
enticing, debonair narration that allowed for great interest and contentment through its simplistic
format, imagery, diction, and relation with the audience. Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market has a
simple structure, with lines only composing of a few words. Lines such as "ocean", "seed", and
"depths" are all examples. The short lines, sometimes only assembled of one word, allows for a
greater heed and understanding of the overall contextual meaning. The simplistic words and lines
allow for anyone to grasp the amazing narration of what is being conveyed. Moreover, lines which
communicate one thought or idea, progressively atrophies, inferring an importance with each and
every idea that's is being illustrated. The poem demonstrates this idea with the statement, "winged

The Cultural Conflict of Hugh Selwyn Mauberley Essay
The Cultural Conflict of Hugh Selwyn Mauberley
By imitating writing styles of ancient poets, Ezra Pound exhibited his attitude toward modern
civilization, and his famous poem, Hugh Selwyn Mauberley, is the stereotype. In this poem, Pound
revealed his disagreement with industrial society. The poem is an imitation of other old poetic styles,
or epic style; however, it presents ironic meaning. To fully understand Pound's divergence from
modern culture, the ways of presenting his position will be firstly explained. Next, the focus is on
the contrast between the elitist and popular culture. Finally, to highlight Pound's attitude, I prefer to
make comparison with other literary masterpieces, Odyssey, which have similar poetic style, ...

The focus of Ezra Pound's cultural conflict is the contrast between high culture and popular culture.
And, the source of the conflict has a close relationship with a modern technological advance in
human history, the industrial revolution. The revolution not only changed people's life but also
influenced the way of thinking. As a result, materialism and capitalism influenced industrialized
areas. With the advance of technology, it improved human's living standard on the physical side, but
decreased the spiritual level. To some persons like Ezra Pound, it is the end of Western civilization
rather than the physical improvement of man's life. Hence, "Pound comes to terms with his
historical situation not by abandoning his ideal of high art, but by maintaining it in ironic contrast to
the products of modern culture."i[i] Literary work itself, like a mirror, reflects cultural facts of its
contemporary period, and "Pound considered the art of a society to be an index to its vitality"ii[ii] In
"Hugh Selwyn Mauberley," there is a clear line between elitist and popular art, or the ideal and the
reality. This kind of distinction is the result of explosive growth of capital society that overpowers
and endangers high culture; yet ambitious poets could not disregard the sign. An ideal situation is
that both modern technology and culture should grow at equal rate.

Private Interests and Social Welfare
The human civilisation is composed of innumerable individuals, countless interest groups and social
strata, with each of them following the fundamental instinct – striving to maximise their own well–
being by obtaining as many benefits as they can and averting as much cost as possible.
Unfortunately for humankind, for one to improve one's life, competing with others is unavoidable.
Competitions, by definition, means the winners get something at the expense of others. The good
news is that competition among people is not a constant–sum game, that is to say, theoretically, if
we can reallocate resources, rights and duties in a certain way, the humankind may benefit
maximally. In the most ideal case, the self–interest of each individual and ... Show more content on

(Book II, Chapter VII, para. 44)
Different from Huang's idea that the emperor is still superior, Rousseau's theory about politics
assumes there is an ever–righteous General Will. Rousseau's solution to the problem is based on this
belief. He argues that the General Will is the only binding force that can be exerted on the
individuals, so a law bill drawn by a however intelligent legislator, which is a particular will of an
individual cannot become law before being authorised by the sovereignty. (Book II, Chapter VII,
para. 47) The separation of power of drawing a law bill and legislation will therefore prevent the
self–interest of the legislator impeding the collective welfare. Because General Will is the
aggregation of many individual wills, it is possible to verify if a law bill proposed is in line with the
General Will by consulting the citizens' opinions, e.g. by free vote. When law bills are widely
supported and scrutinised by the citizens, one can be assured that the social welfare is not impeded
by the legislators' private interest. #
Discussions
I believe Huang's proposal is a great advancement in China's political history, for the pioneering
idea that the emperor's performance should be scrutinised thoroughly is raised. However, I cannot
persuade myself to fully trust such a system, in which one may spot a number of weaknesses.
Firstly, the "school" is merely an advisory body, rather than a body that

Rousseau and Duty to the State Essay
It is generally agreed that the great philosopher Jean–Jacques Rousseau and the artist Jacques–Louis
David had played a great role in serving and supporting the French Revolution, in addition to,

special way.
The great philosopher Jean–Jacques Rousseau had inspired the revolution by his argument and ideas
that was based on Reason. He played a great role in exploring the notion of duty to the state by
providing the public with his argument in the social contract, which was frequently quoted and

Hence, whenever the individuals follow the state's order and be aware of his duty to the state, then he
is serving his country in addition to serving himself in the first place.
But Rousseau's system has a remarkable problem .He insures that the will of each person always
coincide with the will of the state–either voluntary or by force–and this inclined to be autocratic
solution and against democracy .He neglects the minorities' views and forces them to obey the
general will. in another word, they had to suppress their views and follow the majorities, whether
they are convinced with it or not. He justifies that, by doing so, you are forcing them to be free and
this is for their benefit at the end.
Regarding Jacques–Louis David, who was the official painter of the French revolution and later
Napoleon .He tried to express his devotion to the state through out his paintings, which was
exhibited at the saloon in order to be seen by the public. He believed in the significance and value of
the art in conveying messages in order to inspire the public, especially during a critical circumstance
like the revolution. As an official painter of the revolution, he tried to express his devotion to the
state by painting pictures; each element of his paintings tends to convey messages about duty to the
state.

Canto 18 of The Inferno by Dante Alighieri
It was once said by Marcel Proust that "We do not receive wisdom, we must discover it for
ourselves, after a journey through the wilderness which no one else can make for us, which no one
can spare us...". This journey through the wild to discover wisdom is exactly what transpires in The
Inferno by Dante Alighieri. The Inferno is an epic poem that is the first section of a three–part poem
called The Divine Comedy. The Inferno is about the narrator, Dante, traveling through the layers of
Hell and learning about the men and women in Hell, and ultimately why God is punishing them
there. One of the most representative parts of The Inferno as a whole is Canto 18. Canto 18 is the ...

Despite not reading all of The Inferno, the certain part I did read gave me a true illustration of the
entire work. Particularly in Canto 18, readers observe Dante's writing techniques as well as the main
ideas or themes present in the work. Canto 18 is an especially excellent illustration of Dante as a
visual poet and his imagery. For example, it begins with Dante describing Malebolge as "made of all
stone the color of crude iron / as is the wall that makes it way around it. / Right in the middle of the
evil field / is an abyss, a broad and yawning pit" (2–5). Dante continues in writing more of a unique
description about the geography of Hell. His descriptiveness allows readers to feel and see the cold,
crude iron surrounding Malebolge and see the huge pit in the middle, too. As when I read the
description of the geography, Dante's writing creates fear in me just as he does for other readers in
all parts of The Inferno. Besides Dante's visual poetry, he also includes very shocking imagery that
affects all five of the senses. Canto 18 holds an excellent example of Dante's imagery. At the end of
the canto, Dante writes, "The ditch beneath / held people plunged in excrement that seemed / as if it
had been poured from human privies" (112–114). These few lines are a wonderful portrayal of the
extremely, shocking details he

Rousseau General Will Analysis
In Basic Political Writings by Jean–Jacques Rousseau, Rousseau talks about general will. The
general will is perhaps the most difficult concept Rousseau had to face. Rousseau explains that the
general will relates to sovereignty. Sovereignty is a state that govern itself. Here Rousseau says, "I
therefore maintain that since sovereignty is merely the exercise of the general will" (Rousseau,
pg.153). The general will is the common good for the state as a whole. The common good is when it
benefits everyone. Everyone can vote on issues and other matters. Rousseau says, "It is therefore
essential, if the general will is to be able to express itself, that there should be no partial society
within the State, and that each citizen should think only his own thoughts" (Rousseau, pg.156). The
United States is one of many countries around the world where the general will is present. In
Rousseau's book, Rousseau emphasize how important the general will is.
Here Rousseau says: "As long as several men assembled together consider themselves as a single

Bel Canto Opera Essay
Opera in the Romantic Period was a time when opera changed drastically, especially in the country
of Italy. The recognition of singers as being important, almost irreplaceable, in the art of "bel canto"
opera changed the idea of a vocalist in opera forever. A singer's voice was prized and Italian
composers, like Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini wrote operas and works to showcase the voice, it's
color, range and agility. These Italian composers were moving away from the normal style of
composition of the time, and the composer Rossini, who set the stage for many other followers.
Many of the operas written during this time are still performed today and are highly acclaimed. For

No longer was the orchestra the main component to listen to when attending an opera. Librettists

Bel Canto was a form of singing that was pretty much defined by three Italian composers: Rossini,
Donizetti, and Bellini. These three composers had huge success in Italy and their operas are still
being performed to this day. These captivating operas like Il barbiere di Sivilglia, Lucia di
lammermoor, and Norma are three of the most popular and challenging operas that singers can be
involved in. These three composers really set the stage for the rise of Italian opera. Rossini is
probably the most popular composer of this era. His works are many and are extremely popular.
Rossini was born in Pesaro in 1792 and on December15th, 1815 when he was only twenty–three

La Canzone Del Piave
"La Canzone del Piave" (The Piave's song) was arguably the best example among the songs, as
Bubola defined them, "imposed from above" (Bubola, 2015) The song, which has kept intact its
popularity until today, is able to narrate the war in its entirety in few verses. Through the tune it is
indeed possible to identify the beginning of the war, the early and clamorous Italian Army defeat of
Caporetto and the final victory too. But that was also one of the most glaring examples of
manipulation of fact carried out by the high command. Despite, as Perucchetti (2015) recognised,

inaccuracies". (Bubola, 2015) As a result, the soldiers weren't identifying themselves in that song,
first of all because of a motto which the superiors imposed them to learn by heart: "O il Piave o tutti
accoppati" (Or we hold on the Piave line or we die). Then, because the song was composed and
performed publicly for the first time in Naples one thousand miles far from the war theatre in 1918,
only few months before the end of the war. Finally, because the song's meaning was totally

the event as national shame and betrayal. The lyrics said

los ingresos que genera una empresa entre los diferentes productos que fabrica, entre sus

Teens And The Media Essay
Portrayal of Teens in the Media
The media, that giant intimidating creation has taken the stereotypes of teens, the way people view
teens, and the way we view ourselves, and has turned it into a delusional monster. The media at this
point in time portrays teenagers as generally bad. Well to be honest, not generally bad, but mostly
horrible. We are seen as the cause for alarm and trouble in society. The media portrays us as manic
delinquents with no solid past and no concrete future.
The main points of teenagers that are warped into a lie are appearance and generalization of actions.

Teenagers are seen as immature and with no future. But are we not more mature than our adult role
models by not generalizing about them?
I admit that I personally know a few people that have made some choices that have resulted in jail
sentences and other consequences. Just because there are a few teenagers like that does not mean
that we are all alike in that aspect. Another misconception about teenagers is that the inner city or
black teens are involved in gangs. This is one of the lowest and cheapest misinterpretations.
Generalizing by race and where people live (and in turn generalizing because of social class) makes
me sick. I see this as a pitiful portrayal and a complete lie.
The media also portrays teens as spending their time doing nothing. They put us in shows and in
commercials in groups of three or four, complete with the previously discussed tattoos and loose
pants, just sitting around doing nothing. They send the message across that we are basically just a
"crime waiting to happen." Which is not the case. About 98% of the teens I know
responsibly arrange and map out their plans. Very few of them sit around with no job waiting to do
something wrong. Another part of this misinterpretation is the attitude of teenagers in general. The
media portrays general teenage attitude (which is portrayed as hating all forms of authority and not
wanting to listen to anyone) as going hand in hand with crime and delinquency.

Daily Struggles for Fame, Money, and Power in the Book Bel...
Bel Canto
Bel Canto is a book full of complex characters, who are slowly unraveled throughout the novel. At
the beginning of the novel, the characters are caught up in daily struggles for fame, for money, for
power. But once captivity removes these struggles, people gravitate toward art and culture. Yet the
transformation of Gen Watanabe, from a gifted individual into a man blind by love, could be
considered immoral. He starts off as a very capable and sensible young man and in the end
transforms into a foolish lovesick boy who gives in to his passions and forgets to think about the
current situation.
Despite being just a translator who possessed knowledge of several difficult languages, Gen was
also a capable worker. Mr. Hosokawa praised him for doing things that were even asked of him. Mr.
Hosokawa even commented that "When there was nothing that needed translating, Gen simply
seemed to take care of things before anyone knew they needed taking care of." Mr. Hosokawa was
not the only one who praised Gen. Everyone else admired him likewise. The Generals, along with
all the hostages, were surprised by his capabilities. General Benjamin even asked him "How did you
get to be so smart?" Gen was complimented more than once that was probably nothing that he
couldn't do. Roxanne was even surprised that he couldn't play the piano. She said "I thought you
might...You seem to know how to do so many things." Gen was very popular as everyone both liked
and needed him Gen Watanabe's

How Do Dante And Virgil Enter The Fourth Circle
In Inferno Canto VII, Dante and Virgil enter the fourth circle and are "greeted" by Plutus who
guards the entrance to this circle. Plutus is denying them passage but Virgil shuts the creature down
with some words. Dante yells when he notices a trench begin to form causing a ring in that circle.
Inside that ring there are two groups of people. They are pushing heaving weights along, indignantly
and in agony. The two groups crash into each other halfway through the circle then turn around and
walk the opposite direction. These souls are condemned to an eternal jousting match.
Virgil explains to Dante that these souls are the Avarices and the Prodigals that during their time on
Earth hoarded and recklessly wasted their money. Dante's curiosity begins to ask if he knows any of
the souls in the fourth circle. Virgil explains to him that the Avaricious are the corrupt clergymen,
popes, and cardinals. Because of the torture they have received, their faces and identities have
become unrecognizable. Virgil points out to Dante that the Avaricious and Prodigals share one
common factor; they were both reckless with the goods of Fortune. They continue their walk to the
Styx.
In Purgatorio Cantos XIX–XXII, Dante and Virgil are making their way through the terraces of the
purgatory. It starts off with Dante having a dream about a woman. Dante describes her as having
crossed eyes, crooked feet, crippled hands, pale, and she stutters when she speaks. Realizing that he
can control his own dream, Dante decides to make her into his fantasy lady. He "loosens" her
tongue, fixes her limbs so she can stand straight and adds color to her complexion. It runs out he has
created a Siren. She begins to sing about the things she has done in her lifetime including seducing
men to their death like she did with Ulysses. Before she can finish her dreadful song, another
woman appears. She is alert and saintly. Her appearance causes the Siren to stop her song mid–
track. This new woman asks Virgil the identity of the Siren so Virgil shows up in the dream and rips
off the Siren's clothes. It turns out that her beauty was just on her face because the Siren emits a
rotten smell from her stomach causing Dante to regret his attraction for this

Protectors Guild Research Paper
There are seven Guilds for the seven realms: River, Ocean, Flame, Earth, Mountain, Desert, and
Sky. The purpose of the Guilds is to protect each realm from the evils of the Land of the Forgotten,
and occasionally each other.
Each year on the first day, the leader of the realm chooses ten children aged ten years and
recommends them to the general of the Protectors Guild. The children will then undergo physical,
mental, and logical testing, and the general will choose the top five to join the Guild. They will be
assigned a mentor that will teach and train them in the ways of the Guild until they either die, or

but I was on the contrary. He was tall and well–muscled, but lean. He had messy red hair that
reached to just above his bright green eyes. He couldn't have been any older than his mid–twenties.
"To you Beckett Gilliam," I saw a look of excitement pass over the young man's face as General
Dahl spoke, "I assign the top student of this class, Apollonia Anastos." At this statement, I stood
from my seat and followed my new mentor into a private room. "I am very excited to be teaching
you Apollo, if you don't mind me calling you that. You can call me Beck. I want to make a promise
to you before anything else," my mentor explained as soon as we were alone. I looked at him
slightly confused, but then he continued, "I promise you, that no matter what the consequences or
outcomes may be, I will teach you to the best of my ability, be your friend and confidant, and protect
you with my life if it comes down to it," and with that, our team was

The Chosen Ones By Pablo Neruda Analysis
Resuscitation Pablo Neruda's poem "The Chosen Ones" is a perfect incorporation of torment and
influence, acting to sadden as well as impact the reader to influence further action against
intolerance. Neruda uses allusion when referencing the years of events of significant suffering that
are important in Cuban and world history, recalling his own first hand experiences himself, and the
significance of understanding these dates and events. Neruda uses a tone that is volatile,
characterized by an increase in imagery, especially of death and violence, as the piece goes on.
Neruda uses a couplet at the end to shift the poem from lengthy description of violence and death, to
a sardonic reference of those who were killed, operating as a call to action. This poem uses allusion,
tone, and personification to exemplify violence as a result of prejudice and their legacy forgotten.
Neruda's use of historical allusion is significant as several dates mentioned are specific examples of
genocide, especially as a result of hatred towards complex institutions of race, nationality, and
religion. In this piece Neruda references several dates: 1925, 1926, 1933, 1940, 1918, 1905, and
"thousands of nineteen hundreds"(Neruda,1). Each date representative of a significantly negative
event in world history; However several dates also coincide with important years in Cuban history.
For example, in the year 1925, Gerardo Machado was elected Cuba's president, he would resist the
rise of a healthy labor movement, which he would enforce using deportation and police brutality.
Cuba's economic downfall would lead to uprisings in the future, all ultimately having Cuban
legislature and law enforcement being taken advantage of, while at the same time several mass
killings world arise before crimes against humanity would be identified and prosecuted at the
International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. Neruda's first–hand experiences with oppression and
fascism growing up in Cuba allowed many to learn from "the Chilean because he offered a way of
identifying with the masses and engaging the problems of society" (Pettingell, 3). Neruda's use of
allusion allows the hatred from these mass killings to be tied in with the selfishness and extortion of

The Context Of Dante's Inferno
The author for any given work with the intent of consumption by the public eye absolutely must
understand and cater to the desired audience. As a failing to understand to whom they are speaking,
will inevitably yield the many painstakingly spent hours of their work lacklustre in comparison to
what it might have been. Had Dante not come to understand this paramount truth of literature, surely
we would not be dissecting the hundreds of translations that exist. The foresight of writing in
commonly understood language is one of the most crucial attributes of Dante 's work. In the time of
Dante it was the every day individuals of Italy that would consume La Divina Comedia and It was
the every day individuals that would ultimately preserve it for the centuries to come. Among the
various translations that we have yet seen there are two that predominantly stand out, as they
represent the two core pillars of Dante 's original work. The first represents the philosophy of the
inferno and the latter stands tribute the the artwork that was the inferno, both are presented by Mark
Musa and Mary Bang respectively. With the intent of bringing Dante 's core message to the reader,
Mark Musa has carefully reconstructed the inferno in such a way so as to enable relative ease of
consumption for the modern day reader with minimal intrusion into Dante 's writing. Musa additions
to the inferno are implemented so as not to distract from the text and allow for a mostly
understandable experience

What Is The Meaning Of Lord Of The Flies, By William Golding
Containing gruesome, meaningful, and thought provoking concepts, Lord of the Flies by William
Golding received much criticism for its ending. The way Golding chose to close this story was
categorized as a dues ex machina, an ending that does not conclude with satisfaction, and in this
case it was a savior figure resolving the deadly situation the characters (a group of stranded boys)
were involved in. Though many have agreed Golding's ending was adventitious, deeper
investigation of the novel has revealed that the larger concluding message was really centralized on
the idea of power in a society. Lord of the Flies revealed that power should reside in the people,
otherwise the inequality between society and the ruler will cause uttermost destruction ... Show

The general idea of Rousseau's philosophy can be also be associated with the thematic message of
power in Lord of the Flies. By summarizing Rousseau's philosophy, readers will instantly learn that
he believes the "complete consensus (should be) based on dictatorship of the General Will" and that
that is the ideal government. He believes that if a monarchy is established it will become difficult for
the society to combat inequality. To prove this, he also claims "the social contract is between the
people, not the government. Each person gives up all rights to the "General Will" which then
incorporates every individual through the legislature." In other words, Rousseau's philosophy states
that "complete consensus" should be put into the people, and different governments will cause
inequality. He supports this statement by claiming it will "incorporate every individual through the
legislature." Rousseau's philosophy and Golding both delivered ideas that revealed the importance in
keeping the authority in the people itself. In fact, this seems more than similar to the concluding
universal message Golding ended Lord of the Flies with. His philosophy reflected ideas that were
applied in Golding's argument. It relates to Lord of the Flies because it

Rousseau 's Theory Of The General Will
In Rousseau's Social Contract, he presents the doctrine of the general will, which has two distinct
strands. The first strand states that the general will comprises of the will of the assembled people, if
certain conditions are met; the second strand says that the general will is always right and always
tends to the public utility. This inconsistent definition has brought confusion upon what the general
will actually is, and brings to question whether or not these two parts can be reconciled to form one
concrete definition. Since Rousseau's explanation is paradoxical, the point of this essay is to clarify
what the connection between these two aspects, reason why they cannot be put together and
determine that the first aspect is the more important one for Rousseau's view. In this paper, I will
explain what the general will is by explaining the two strands, evaluate them, and then I will end this
paper with the conclusion that these two aspects cannot be put together, and that the first definition
is the more important one. The two aspects cannot be reconciled, as they represent different things–
the first represents where the general will comes from, and the second is more of a representation of
what the general will would be in ideal circumstances, yet the first one is the primary aspect, as it
expresses the collective decision made by the people. Rousseau's first strand of the general will is
described as the will of the assembled people, which means that it is the

Dante?s Inferno Essay examples
Literature is an art. It demands the imagination of the reader, and in return the literature will
communicate the message at whatever level is desired. It is not uncommon for many literary works
to operate on more than various level; there are facts and truths, which are immediately apparent,
and in contrast, the symbolism or allegories that may be present upon deeper investigation and
exploration. In works regarding religion or spiritual matters, oftentimes it is very common to find
symbolism, and this is very true of Dante's 'Divine Comedy,' a work so full of symbolism that there

It is interesting and symbolic that the poem starts in a representation of spring, and spring is often
seen as the beginning of things, a time when life comes back to the earth and is seen in the old
traditions as "a season of creation" (Dante). It is also well to remember that at this time Dante would
have believes the sun to be a planet that orbited the earth and not visa versa as we known today
(Dante).
So we are starting at the beginning, and the first event that occurs is on his walk he meets three
animals " concerning that wild beast with the dappled skin...... of a lion ...... And a she–

why, and that there forms represent forms that we may associate with hell, which is also the inferno.
In the later canto we find that this is a symbolism of the
"triple division of sins" these are the beasts of incontinence, violence and

Themes In Dante Alighieri's Make Florence Great Again
Make Florence Great Again
Dante Alighieri lived during a time of various warring political sides and became strongly involved
in politics as much as his education and writing. He was then exiled by the unstable political climate
but remained determined to contribute to Florence's well being through his writing of the epic poem,
The Inferno, attempting to cleanse corrupt figures, who he believed contributed no positive aspects
to Florence, by putting them in certain places of his Hell. He creates a protagonist, modeled off
himself to do this and throughout the poem Dante, the protagonist, shows hostility towards sinners
who contradicted his political stance such as the wrathful Filippo Argenti through diction. However,
Alighieri seems to show sympathetic feelings towards the heretic Farinata Degli Uberti through
diction and imagery, but he was on an opposing political side of Dante, yet Dante seems to overlook
his opposing ideas and sin because the sinner states his good will towards Florence. Finally, another
important sinner, Sodomite Ser Brunetto Latino, is shown compassion through Dante's interactions
and the author's diction, which suggests that Dante Alighieri seems to only respect sinners who tried
to protect or create a prosperous Florence, which is why he overlooks their political stance and/or
sins.
Alighieri reveals his first resentful feelings towards sinners of opposite political sides whom, he
believes, had no intention to contribute to the development of his

Lucia di Lammermoor– Mad scene
Lucia di Lammermoor, written in 1835, is an opera by Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848) based on the
novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter Scott. The opera is often called a masterpiece and
has, thus far, stood the test of time. It was not only popular in its day, but remains popular repertory
today and performed by companies around the world every year. The "Mad Scene" has been
remarked as a reason to go to the opera. The scene uses motives from earlier in the opera that show a
mind going insane, in addition to utilizing elaborate coloratura and vocal flourishes. This opera is
said to touch the heart the way few others can do, as a masterpiece and "heralding ... Show more

Scott accomplished the crucial love–plight without a single word of dialogue, which is not very
reasonable for opera. Happily ignoring Scott's need to move the plot along, Donizetti gives lovers,
Lucia and Edgardo, a dreamy love duet theme, which breathes the essence of bel canto romantic
love.12 In addition, Lucia's actions in the operatic mad scene, spur from this passage: The next
evening, the physicians said, would be the crisis of her malady. It proved so; for although she awoke
from her trance with some appearance of calmness, and suffered her nightclothes to be changed or
put in order, yet as soon as she put her hand to her neck, as if to search for the fatal blue ribbon, a
tide of recollections seemed to rush upon her, which her mind and body alike incapable of
bearing.13
It is clear that the novel is the inspiration, but has been changed a little for the bel canto style and for
entertainment. The opera is able to transform the characters into something a little more pleasing to
the audience. One writer finds that Scott's Lucy seems inarticulate and frightening, whereas Lucia
seems detached from reality but able to express sentiments in a gracious and highly stylized way.14
Lucia di Lammermoor was composed after Donizetti had returned to Naples form Paris for the

Faith and Reason: Creacionists and Evolutionists
Many people believe that Christians have to reject evolution in order to believe in the biblical
account of creation in Genesis 1. Scholar and author John Walton, as well as physician, Francis
Collins argue that this is not necessarily true. Walton reminds us that we have to read the Bible
carefully, as it was not written for us but for the Israelites. Walton also argues that observing natural
effects does not mean that we have to remove God from our thoughts. He cannot just reveal all the
scientific details that were going to occur because the past generations would not understand. The
Bible is the proof of His love and patience for humans, not a science textbook. Even though it was
not for us, we still read it since the Scripture is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only our creator knows everything, and that is God. Again, I completely accept Collin's claim. Even
when we have trust, reason should still be behind it. We should have complete faith in God, who
used physics' reasons to help organisms survive during evolution. If the gravitational force was
stronger or weaker, we would not be able to live on earth. In Genesis 1:2, we know that the earth
was formless after the explosion. An indistinct earth cannot have consistent forces, and so humans
would not have been able to live (Synder, 2009). God fixed the sky on the second and third day, and
metaphorically it means that He made the physical constants accurately work. Gravity has been
constant throughout the history of Earth, and so it played a big role in evolution of life on Earth. In
Matthew 22, someone asks Jesus about the greatest commandment, and Jesus replied loving God
with all your soul and mind . Using faith will get a person in a close relationship with God, but
reasoning (mind) will enhance that relationship (Pollack, 2013). For example, faith lets us to follow
in His footsteps by showing love, patience, kindness, forgiveness, and humbleness to others. The
mind will let us understand why we should love, be patient, etc. Collins nailed perfectly on
explaining this assertion. For example, in Genesis 1, it says that God created humans out of His own
image. The icon God in people means that they have a little bit of His holiness in them. Some people

Pablo Neruda Mood
Multiple Perspectives of Neruda's "Song of Despair" Pablo Neruda is known as one of the greatest
Spanish–American writers of all time. He is a Chilean poet whose words have impacted many and
will continue to impact many more. Through his powerful romanticism, Neruda can express misery
or passion in a single line. One of his pieces in particular, "Poema 20," "Tonight I Can Write," or
"Song of Despair" expresses hidden emotions in the deepest way possible. This poem is from a
collection he wrote called, "In Veinte Poemas," which he composed on his journey to the Old World,

The realization that the speaker has in this poem is that he once loved a woman, but he no longer
does. "The night wind revolves in the sky and sings," (Line 5) includes personification of nature and
Earth. The irony comes when the world "revolve" is put into perspective. This repetitive poem is
solely circular as it views the same patterns of topic and emotion several times. This also helps to set
the melancholy tone that the speaker possesses throughout the entire piece, adding to the unfeminist
tone as well. "And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture," (Line 15) shows that the
speaker is fully examining and comparing his emotions and his words on paper. His words fall as his
emotions fall. The symbolism in this poem displays how often Pablo Neruda uses them as "symbolic
vehicles" for the poet's salvation and self–discovery (Perez–Firmat). It is only near the end of the
poem that the speaker acknowledges the woman and her physical experience. "Her voice, her bright
body. Her infinite eyes." (Line 27) Just before this line the speaker questions his love for her,
proving that he is consistently drawing back and forth between mixed emotions. In lines 3 and 4,
"The night is starry and the stars are blue and shiver in the distance." could possibly show that the
stars allude to the speaker's

Joan Sutherland : The Musical Periods Of The Baroque Period
The Baroque period refers to an era that started around 1600 and ended around 1750, and included
composers like Bach, Vivaldi and Handel, who pioneered new styles like the concerto, the sonata,
and the opera. Opera encouraged composers to devise ways of illustrating moods in their music;
affecting the listener's emotions became a major objective in composition during this period. Opera
spread to France and England, and composers such as Rameau, Handel and Purcell began producing
great works. "Joan Sutherland, was the vocal phenomenon of the postwar era" states
Lord Harewood, In the days he edited Opera Magazine. She was also an opera singer from the
baroque period.Vocally, she was the most complete artist of her day. Joan, was taught music by her
mom, Muriel Sutherland, until she was 19, when she trained formally in Sydney with John and Aida
Dickens. Hardly any other singer has had such an uninterrupted and brilliant career. Despite the
many honors she has received such as Queen Elizabeth II conferred on her the title of Dame of the
British Empire, the artist has remained a completely natural human being. Sutherland was dubbed
"LaStupenda" by Italian critics which means "stupendous, gorgeous, great". Andrew Porter, A critic,
said that he found Joan's singing "exquisite" and explained that "there was a meaning in everything
she did".
While attending St. Catherine's Girls' School in Waverly, Sutherland received her first education in
music, mostly piano, from her mother.

The Conference Of The Birds And Dante Alighieri's Inferno
The overall purpose of The Conference of the Birds and Dante Alighieri's Inferno was to motivate
and inspire the specific demographic within their audiences who already believed in and practiced
the texts' respective denominations to continue on with their spiritual journeys. This is demonstrated
by the main protagonists' spiritual journeys, the consequences of sin they both experience and
witness, as well as how they relate to the audience. This topic is significant due to the fact that the
two texts analyzed are examples of religious propaganda. The texts might also prove to be important
and valuable to those that practice either of the two discussed religions, as the allegories could be
used as a reminder of why spiritual journeys exist and how they can impact those who embark on
them. One could easily make a case that this is the true reason why these were written through close
analyzation of the text. The journeys depicted in the texts show the personal, spiritual growth and
shift within the two main characters' outlook on God in the selected texts. This persuades believers
of these two religions to continue on spiritual journeys of their own because they too are prone to
benefit from spiritual growth and development. This is supported by quotes such as, "So may God
grant you, reader, the benefit from reading of my poem..." (Canto XX, 457). Although similar in the
fact that both their main characters grow and experience change, it is necessary to first understand

Neruda Figurative Language
In Neruda's poem "Tonight I can write the saddest lines" he used, Alliteration, Simile, and repetition
to convey his feeling of lost love and sadness. Poetry For Students describes the relationship of the
poems setting to its mood explaining that, "He begins writing at night, time when darkness will
match his mood.(3)" The critics from poetry for students agrees with this analysis, claiming, " We
later learn that his overwhelming sorrow over a lost lover has prevented him from writing about
their relationship and its demise.(3)" An instance where Neruda uses alliteration is when in the he
poem he wrote "and the blue stars shiver in the distance" (3). The alliteration of the "S" sound
makes the conveys the meaning that the poem is sad. The "S" sound also makes an evocative image
of rain which can be sad. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This simile that Neruda included connects to the meaning of the verse as in the poem affects the
reader emotionally like dew in the morning on the pasture. The comparison connects because it is
inevitable for dew to be on the pasture in the morning just like it is inevitable for the poem to
connect to the reader emotionally. Poetry For Students Found a metaphor that compares the sky to
the relationship which agrees with my meaning of the poem, One thing that Poetry for students
picked up on and I didn't is when on, the eighth line, the speaker remembers kissing his love "again
and again under the endless sky"–a sky as endless as, he had hoped, their relationship would be.(4)"
Neruda also uses repetition of the words "tonight I can write the saddest lines" (1, 5, 11). The
repetition creates a rhythm that he is talking about something sad. The repetition of these words also
creates the image that literally he is writing the poem at night in his desk and he is writing this with

How Did Rousseau Influence The Relationship Between The...
Eighteenth–century philosopher Jean–Jacques Rousseau influenced many French revolutionaries
with his ideas. In the time of the Enlightenment, people believed that humankind could progress and
improve through the use of reason and science. One of them was French artist Jacques–Louis David,
who was official artist to the French revolution (p158, Blk 3). Just as Rousseau had used his
publications to reflect on his ideas, David had used art as a media to reflect the ideas and values of
the society in the eighteenth century. In this essay, we will be examining the influence of Rousseau's
views on the relationship between the state and the individual in David's painting "The Oath of the
Horatii".

(p105, Blk 3). As the particular will is a product of appetite and the general will a product of reason,
we should obey the general will which makes us noble and good. Rousseau argues that when a man
acts on his particular will, he is slavish to his appetite and that makes him a stupid, limited animal.
Whereas, when he adopts the general will, he is being an ennobled, intelligent being. In the painting,
the brothers offer their lives on behalf of the country. In doing so, they are sacrificing their personal
desires for the sake of their country and are thus considered heroes, reflecting Rousseau's views.
This painting is divided into three equal parts by the arches in the background and the characters
correspond to each of these arches (TV12). The father is in the middle portion of the painting. The
lines of perspective created by the tiled floor, draws our attention to the swords that the father is
holding and the vanishing point lies just behind the handles of the sword. Our angle of vision is such
that we are looking directly at the main figures groups, particularly the father. A single light source
from the left of the picture illuminates the characters and also focuses our attention to the father
holding the sword. This creates a 'theatrical' effect. The background is simple and stark so our
attention is focussed on the figure groups in the painting. The painting has a wide tonal range that
makes the composition logical and balanced. The colours used in this

Rousseau 's The Social Contract
The following texts, Rousseau 's The Social Contract, Marx's Private Property and Communism,
Estranged Labor and Money, all differentiate between a general will, and a more personal,
individual will. However, Rousseau's and Marx's theories of a general will, or collective being have
discrepancies in both the origin and implications of general will and individual will. Rousseau
defines general will as a collective desire to advance society towards a common goal. However,
Rousseau warns that ignoring the general will and pursuing one's own selfish personal will is
dangerous not only for an individual, but can also ultimately lead to the destruction of the body
politic. Marx also discusses a concept similar to Rousseau's general will, however ... Show more

Additionally, Rousseau believes that self–interests are often detrimental to the common good,
stating that "each individual, as a man, may have a particular will contrary or dissimilar to the
general will which he has as a citizen. His particular interest may speak to him quite differently from
the common interest: his absolute and naturally independent existence may make him look upon
what he owes to the common cause as a gratuitous contribution... The continuance of such an
injustice could not but prove the undoing of the body politic. (Rousseau, 194–195). It is evident that
Rousseau is aware of humankind's selfish desires stemming from a personal will, and he believes
that if individuals begin to ignore the common will and instead act upon their personal desires and
will, that it will often lead to pandemonium. This chaos is likely to destroy any Republic, as
conflicting and selfish ideals will cause individuals to lose sight of the general will, leading to the
collapse of a coexisting society. Rousseau, however, does not address how individual will originates,
a point that Marx discusses in length in his Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts.
The epitome of the detrimental effects caused by one acting purely on personal will can be seen in
the film, American Beauty. In this film, Lester Burnham can be seen acting upon his personal will
and ignoring the collective good in his

Ezra Pound Research Paper

  • 1. Ezra Pound Research Paper The Young Genius: Ezra Pound's influenced poetry on Benito Mussolini and the Fascist movement, time of his stay in St. Elizabeth's Hospital and the concept of Imagism. "If a nation's literature declines, the nation atrophies and decays." (Ezra Pound Quotes) Ezra Pound was not a man of many words, but he certainly did have a knack for turning simple words into something beautiful. Pounds' poetry was influenced by his fascination with Benito Mussolini and the Fascist movement, the time of his stay in St. Elizabeth's Hospital and the concept of Imagism. It is safe to say that Ezra Pound did not live a boring life growing up. He was born on October 30, 1885 in Hailey, Idaho. However, he was brought up in Wyncote, Philadelphia. At the small ... "Canto 13" If a man have not order within him He cannot spread order about him; And if a man have not order within him His family will not act with due order; And if the prince have not order within him He cannot put order in his dominions. (Lines 46–51) In the previous excerpt of Canto 13, the three literacy terms refrain; anaphora and a hint of didactic poetry are involved. The word and phrase order appear in every line of the excerpt. It is repeated to not only get the meaning across, but to make a significant indent in the readers' mind while reading the poem. The hint of didactic poetry is shown in this poem, I believe, because Pound is telling the reader without order you cannot do a few things such as spread order about him, family will not act, and one cannot put order in his dominions. In a way, that is teaching the pros of "order." From this poem I can infer that Ezra Pound is stating that whether or not he is ruled by an imperialistic power: everyday is going to be the same, for everybody. The last line "Imperial power is? And to us what is it?" means that no matter government is enforced, their everyday life is not going to change. "Cantos XLIX: For The Seven Lakes" Sun up; work Sundown; to rest Dig well and drink of the water Dig field; eat of the grain Imperial power is? And to us what is it?

  • 4. Dantes Inferno Essay In The Inferno – Dante’s Immortal Drama of a Journey Through Hell, Dante allows the reader to experience his every move. His mastery of language, his sensitivity to the sights and sounds of nature, and his infinite store of knowledge allow him to capture and draw the reader into the realm of the terrestrial hell. In Canto 6, the Gluttons; Canto 13, the Violent Against Themselves; and Canto 23, the Hypocrites; Dante excels in his detailed portrayal of the supernatural world of hell. In each canto, Dante combines his mastery of language with his sensitivity to the sights and sounds of nature to set the stage. He then reinforces the image with examples that call upon his infinite store of knowledge, and thus draw a parallel that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dante immediately lets the reader understand the new environment that he is now experiencing by describing “Its foliage was not verdant, but nearly black. / The unhealthy branches, gnarled and warped and tangled, / bore poison thorns instead of fruit” (119). This quote introduces the reader to the woods of suicide and gives them an excellent picture of what he is seeing and how he portrays the sin they committed. Due to these sinners abuse to themselves they are now in the form of trees whereas they can no longer hurt themselves, but are often hurt by others who blatantly disregard their existence, as they once did themselves. Dante then goes on to explain the terror of the harpies who eat away at the branches and leaves of these sinners. He says “Their wings are wide, their feet clawed, their huge bellies / covered with feathers, their necks and faces human” (119). This shows the reader the grotesqueries of these violent birds, and like Cerberus in Canto 6, the reader can vividly imagine how these harpies physically appear to Dante. Dante continues to help the reader understand the sounds he hears as he says, “They croak eternally in the unnatural trees” (119). This quote gives the reader an idea of the incessant sounds that these victims are producing, as a result of the pain they are going through. He then analogizes the broken souls of the victim’s pain simply by breaking the branch of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Pisan Cantos This paper seeks to analyze the juxtaposition of different images in Canto LXXXIII. What makes The Cantos interesting is the combination languages such as Chinese characters as well as words in Greek, German and Italian. The text also includes many allusions to historical and mythological figures and events from different time periods. The part named The Pisan Cantos was written at the end of the World War II. While writing Cantos, Pound was kept in Disciplinary Training Center by US army. He was a supporter of Mussolini which caused him to be accused of treachery, and put into a cage. In his book, Moments of Moments: Aspects of the Literary Epiphany, Wim Tigges suggests that; As is well known, Pound's epic took a different turn, in many respects, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eriugenian idea, "omnia, quae sunt, lumina sunt" means "everything that exists is light" which is followed by "whatever." This "whatever" evokes a kind of indifference in readers' minds. Then Pound gives references to Eriugena's "bones" being dug in the time of Simon IV de Montfort l'Amaury. Pound perfectly connects the ideas about Eriugena and his death by giving reference to Simon IV de Montfort l'Amaury. "Eriugena's Neoplatonic ideas and his theories were exploited by the Albigensian heretics, he was found guilty of being a heretic by Pope Honorius III" (Terrell 459). This part suggests that no matter how hilarious Eurigena's verses were, these magical words could not prevent his tragedy, he was misunderstood and his ideas were misused. Then, Pound turns to Baudelaire's Les Paradis n'est pas artificial which means "Paradise is not artificial," and to W. B. Yeats. Here, "Uncle William" refers to W.B. Yeats. He ridicules Yeats stating that while searching for a higher truth, Yeats is unable to see beauty of the material world. He also adds that Yeats is in the search of something, but "whatever" that something is, the search is aimless. Pound implicitly states that natural reality is not inferior to the higher reality, they complete each other. • 12. Summary Of Pablo Neruda's Ode To A Large Tuna In The Market Pablo Neruda's Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market recalls the unfortunate demise of a beautiful creature, with seeing amazing visuals of the vast oceans and the "depths of the sea", is found dead surrounded by "lettuces", "carrots", "grapes", and "among the vegetables", ready to be sold. The subject, a tuna, is a simple, everyday food item that most overpass without giving much thought. Contrary, Pablo is known for his odd narration of subjects most would never attend towards, such as Ode to an Artichoke or Ode to Salt. Furthermore, publicly displaying his appreciation for life and all the gifts it has to offer. Consequently, with its simplistic nature, Pablo was able to construct an enticing, debonair narration that allowed for great interest and contentment through its simplistic format, imagery, diction, and relation with the audience. Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market has a simple structure, with lines only composing of a few words. Lines such as "ocean", "seed", and "depths" are all examples. The short lines, sometimes only assembled of one word, allows for a greater heed and understanding of the overall contextual meaning. The simplistic words and lines allow for anyone to grasp the amazing narration of what is being conveyed. Moreover, lines which communicate one thought or idea, progressively atrophies, inferring an importance with each and every idea that's is being illustrated. The Cultural Conflict of Hugh Selwyn Mauberley Essay The Cultural Conflict of Hugh Selwyn Mauberley By imitating writing styles of ancient poets, Ezra Pound exhibited his attitude toward modern civilization, and his famous poem, Hugh Selwyn Mauberley, is the stereotype. In this poem, Pound revealed his disagreement with industrial society. The poem is an imitation of other old poetic styles, or epic style; however, it presents ironic meaning. To fully understand Pound's divergence from modern culture, the ways of presenting his position will be firstly explained. Next, the focus is on the contrast between the elitist and popular culture. Finally, to highlight Pound's attitude, I prefer to make comparison with other literary masterpieces, Odyssey, which have similar poetic style, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The focus of Ezra Pound's cultural conflict is the contrast between high culture and popular culture. And, the source of the conflict has a close relationship with a modern technological advance in human history, the industrial revolution. The revolution not only changed people's life but also influenced the way of thinking. As a result, materialism and capitalism influenced industrialized areas. With the advance of technology, it improved human's living standard on the physical side, but decreased the spiritual level. To some persons like Ezra Pound, it is the end of Western civilization rather than the physical improvement of man's life. Hence, "Pound comes to terms with his historical situation not by abandoning his ideal of high art, but by maintaining it in ironic contrast to the products of modern culture."i[i] Literary work itself, like a mirror, reflects cultural facts of its contemporary period, and "Pound considered the art of a society to be an index to its vitality"ii[ii] In "Hugh Selwyn Mauberley," there is a clear line between elitist and popular art, or the ideal and the reality. This kind of distinction is the result of explosive growth of capital society that overpowers and endangers high culture; yet ambitious poets could not disregard the sign. An ideal situation is that both modern technology and culture should grow at equal rate. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Private Interests and Social Welfare The human civilisation is composed of innumerable individuals, countless interest groups and social strata, with each of them following the fundamental instinct – striving to maximise their own well– being by obtaining as many benefits as they can and averting as much cost as possible. Unfortunately for humankind, for one to improve one's life, competing with others is unavoidable. Competitions, by definition, means the winners get something at the expense of others. The good news is that competition among people is not a constant–sum game, that is to say, theoretically, if we can reallocate resources, rights and duties in a certain way, the humankind may benefit maximally. In the most ideal case, the self–interest of each individual and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Book II, Chapter VII, para. 44) Different from Huang's idea that the emperor is still superior, Rousseau's theory about politics assumes there is an ever–righteous General Will. Rousseau's solution to the problem is based on this belief. He argues that the General Will is the only binding force that can be exerted on the individuals, so a law bill drawn by a however intelligent legislator, which is a particular will of an individual cannot become law before being authorised by the sovereignty. (Book II, Chapter VII, para. 47) The separation of power of drawing a law bill and legislation will therefore prevent the self–interest of the legislator impeding the collective welfare. Because General Will is the aggregation of many individual wills, it is possible to verify if a law bill proposed is in line with the General Will by consulting the citizens' opinions, e.g. by free vote. When law bills are widely supported and scrutinised by the citizens, one can be assured that the social welfare is not impeded by the legislators' private interest. # Discussions I believe Huang's proposal is a great advancement in China's political history, for the pioneering idea that the emperor's performance should be scrutinised thoroughly is raised. However, I cannot persuade myself to fully trust such a system, in which one may spot a number of weaknesses. Firstly, the "school" is merely an advisory body, rather than a body that ... Canto 18 of The Inferno by Dante Alighieri Essay Canto 18 of The Inferno by Dante Alighieri It was once said by Marcel Proust that "We do not receive wisdom, we must discover it for ourselves, after a journey through the wilderness which no one else can make for us, which no one can spare us...". This journey through the wild to discover wisdom is exactly what transpires in The Inferno by Dante Alighieri. The Inferno is an epic poem that is the first section of a three–part poem called The Divine Comedy. Despite not reading all of The Inferno, the certain part I did read gave me a true illustration of the entire work. Particularly in Canto 18, readers observe Dante's writing techniques as well as the main ideas or themes present in the work. Canto 18 is an especially excellent illustration of Dante as a visual poet and his imagery. For example, it begins with Dante describing Malebolge as "made of all stone the color of crude iron / as is the wall that makes it way around it. / Right in the middle of the evil field / is an abyss, a broad and yawning pit" (2–5). Dante continues in writing more of a unique description about the geography of Hell. His descriptiveness allows readers to feel and see the cold, crude iron surrounding Malebolge and see the huge pit in the middle, too. As when I read the description of the geography, Dante's writing creates fear in me just as he does for other readers in all parts of The Inferno. Besides Dante's visual poetry, he also includes very shocking imagery that affects all five of the senses. Canto 18 holds an excellent example of Dante's imagery. At the end of the canto, Dante writes, "The ditch beneath / held people plunged in excrement that seemed / as if it had been poured from human privies" (112–114). • 24. Rousseau General Will Analysis In Basic Political Writings by Jean–Jacques Rousseau, Rousseau talks about general will. The general will is perhaps the most difficult concept Rousseau had to face. Rousseau explains that the general will relates to sovereignty. Sovereignty is a state that govern itself. Here Rousseau says, "I therefore maintain that since sovereignty is merely the exercise of the general will" (Rousseau, pg.153). The general will is the common good for the state as a whole. The common good is when it benefits everyone. Everyone can vote on issues and other matters. Rousseau says, "It is therefore essential, if the general will is to be able to express itself, that there should be no partial society within the State, and that each citizen should think only his own thoughts" (Rousseau, pg.156). The United States is one of many countries around the world where the general will is present. In Rousseau's book, Rousseau emphasize how important the general will is. The recognition of singers as being important, almost irreplaceable, in the art of "bel canto" opera changed the idea of a vocalist in opera forever. A singer's voice was prized and Italian composers, like Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini wrote operas and works to showcase the voice, it's color, range and agility. These Italian composers were moving away from the normal style of composition of the time, and the composer Rossini, who set the stage for many other followers. La Canzone Del Piave "La Canzone del Piave" (The Piave's song) was arguably the best example among the songs, as Bubola defined them, "imposed from above" (Bubola, 2015) The song, which has kept intact its popularity until today, is able to narrate the war in its entirety in few verses. Through the tune it is indeed possible to identify the beginning of the war, the early and clamorous Italian Army defeat of Caporetto and the final victory too. But that was also one of the most glaring examples of manipulation of fact carried out by the high command. Just because there are a few teenagers like that does not mean that we are all alike in that aspect. Another misconception about teenagers is that the inner city or black teens are involved in gangs. This is one of the lowest and cheapest misinterpretations. Generalizing by race and where people live (and in turn generalizing because of social class) makes me sick. I see this as a pitiful portrayal and a complete lie. The media also portrays teens as spending their time doing nothing. Plutus is denying them passage but Virgil shuts the creature down with some words. Dante yells when he notices a trench begin to form causing a ring in that circle. Inside that ring there are two groups of people. They are pushing heaving weights along, indignantly and in agony. The two groups crash into each other halfway through the circle then turn around and walk the opposite direction. These souls are condemned to an eternal jousting match. Virgil explains to Dante that these souls are the Avarices and the Prodigals that during their time on Earth hoarded and recklessly wasted their money. Dante's curiosity begins to ask if he knows any of the souls in the fourth circle. Virgil explains to him that the Avaricious are the corrupt clergymen, popes, and cardinals. Because of the torture they have received, their faces and identities have become unrecognizable. Virgil points out to Dante that the Avaricious and Prodigals share one common factor; they were both reckless with the goods of Fortune. They continue their walk to the Styx. In Purgatorio Cantos XIX–XXII, Dante and Virgil are making their way through the terraces of the purgatory. It starts off with Dante having a dream about a woman. Dante describes her as having crossed eyes, crooked feet, crippled hands, pale, and she stutters when she speaks. The Chosen Ones By Pablo Neruda Analysis Resuscitation Pablo Neruda's poem "The Chosen Ones" is a perfect incorporation of torment and influence, acting to sadden as well as impact the reader to influence further action against intolerance. Neruda uses allusion when referencing the years of events of significant suffering that are important in Cuban and world history, recalling his own first hand experiences himself, and the significance of understanding these dates and events. Neruda uses a tone that is volatile, characterized by an increase in imagery, especially of death and violence, as the piece goes on. Neruda uses a couplet at the end to shift the poem from lengthy description of violence and death, to a sardonic reference of those who were killed, operating as a call to action. This poem uses allusion, tone, and personification to exemplify violence as a result of prejudice and their legacy forgotten. Neruda's use of historical allusion is significant as several dates mentioned are specific examples of genocide, especially as a result of hatred towards complex institutions of race, nationality, and religion. In this piece Neruda references several dates: 1925, 1926, 1933, 1940, 1918, 1905, and "thousands of nineteen hundreds"(Neruda,1). Each date representative of a significantly negative event in world history; However several dates also coincide with important years in Cuban history. For example, in the year 1925, Gerardo Machado was elected Cuba's president, he would resist the rise of a healthy labor movement, which he would enforce using deportation and police brutality. Cuba's economic downfall would lead to uprisings in the future, all ultimately having Cuban legislature and law enforcement being taken advantage of, while at the same time several mass killings world arise before crimes against humanity would be identified and prosecuted at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. Neruda's first–hand experiences with oppression and fascism growing up in Cuba allowed many to learn from "the Chilean because he offered a way of identifying with the masses and engaging the problems of society" (Pettingell, 3). As a failing to understand to whom they are speaking, will inevitably yield the many painstakingly spent hours of their work lacklustre in comparison to what it might have been. Had Dante not come to understand this paramount truth of literature, surely we would not be dissecting the hundreds of translations that exist. The foresight of writing in commonly understood language is one of the most crucial attributes of Dante 's work. In the time of Dante it was the every day individuals of Italy that would consume La Divina Comedia and It was the every day individuals that would ultimately preserve it for the centuries to come. Among the various translations that we have yet seen there are two that predominantly stand out, as they represent the two core pillars of Dante 's original work. The first represents the philosophy of the inferno and the latter stands tribute the the artwork that was the inferno, both are presented by Mark Musa and Mary Bang respectively. With the intent of bringing Dante 's core message to the reader, Mark Musa has carefully reconstructed the inferno in such a way so as to enable relative ease of consumption for the modern day reader with minimal intrusion into Dante 's writing. What Is The Meaning Of Lord Of The Flies, By William Golding Containing gruesome, meaningful, and thought provoking concepts, Lord of the Flies by William Golding received much criticism for its ending. The way Golding chose to close this story was categorized as a dues ex machina, an ending that does not conclude with satisfaction, and in this case it was a savior figure resolving the deadly situation the characters (a group of stranded boys) were involved in. Though many have agreed Golding's ending was adventitious, deeper investigation of the novel has revealed that the larger concluding message was really centralized on the idea of power in a society. Lord of the Flies revealed that power should reside in the people, otherwise the inequality between society and the ruler will cause uttermost destruction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The general idea of Rousseau's philosophy can be also be associated with the thematic message of power in Lord of the Flies. By summarizing Rousseau's philosophy, readers will instantly learn that he believes the "complete consensus (should be) based on dictatorship of the General Will" and that that is the ideal government. He believes that if a monarchy is established it will become difficult for the society to combat inequality. To prove this, he also claims "the social contract is between the people, not the government. Each person gives up all rights to the "General Will" which then incorporates every individual through the legislature." In other words, Rousseau's philosophy states that "complete consensus" should be put into the people, and different governments will cause inequality. He supports this statement by claiming it will "incorporate every individual through the legislature." Rousseau's philosophy and Golding both delivered ideas that revealed the importance in keeping the authority in the people itself. In fact, this seems more than similar to the concluding universal message Golding ended Lord of the Flies with. His philosophy reflected ideas that were applied in Golding's argument. It relates to Lord of the Flies because it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. Rousseau 's Theory Of The General Will In Rousseau's Social Contract, he presents the doctrine of the general will, which has two distinct strands. The first strand states that the general will comprises of the will of the assembled people, if certain conditions are met; the second strand says that the general will is always right and always tends to the public utility. This inconsistent definition has brought confusion upon what the general will actually is, and brings to question whether or not these two parts can be reconciled to form one concrete definition. Since Rousseau's explanation is paradoxical, the point of this essay is to clarify what the connection between these two aspects, reason why they cannot be put together and determine that the first aspect is the more important one for Rousseau's view. In this paper, I will explain what the general will is by explaining the two strands, evaluate them, and then I will end this paper with the conclusion that these two aspects cannot be put together, and that the first definition is the more important one. The two aspects cannot be reconciled, as they represent different things– the first represents where the general will comes from, and the second is more of a representation of what the general will would be in ideal circumstances, yet the first one is the primary aspect, as it expresses the collective decision made by the people. Rousseau's first strand of the general will is described as the will of the assembled people, which means that it is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is not uncommon for many literary works to operate on more than various level; there are facts and truths, which are immediately apparent, and in contrast, the symbolism or allegories that may be present upon deeper investigation and exploration. In works regarding religion or spiritual matters, oftentimes it is very common to find symbolism, and this is very true of Dante's 'Divine Comedy,' a work so full of symbolism that there is only time enough to concentrate on the first two cantos of the first book Inferno. It is interesting and symbolic that the poem starts in a representation of spring, and spring is often seen as the beginning of things, a time when life comes back to the earth and is seen in the old traditions as "a season of creation" (Dante). So we are starting at the beginning, and the first event that occurs is on his walk he meets three animals " concerning that wild beast with the dappled skin...... of a lion ...... Themes In Dante Alighieri's Make Florence Great Again Make Florence Great Again Dante Alighieri lived during a time of various warring political sides and became strongly involved in politics as much as his education and writing. He was then exiled by the unstable political climate but remained determined to contribute to Florence's well being through his writing of the epic poem, The Inferno, attempting to cleanse corrupt figures, who he believed contributed no positive aspects to Florence, by putting them in certain places of his Hell. He creates a protagonist, modeled off himself to do this and throughout the poem Dante, the protagonist, shows hostility towards sinners who contradicted his political stance such as the wrathful Filippo Argenti through diction. However, Alighieri seems to show sympathetic feelings towards the heretic Farinata Degli Uberti through diction and imagery, but he was on an opposing political side of Dante, yet Dante seems to overlook his opposing ideas and sin because the sinner states his good will towards Florence. Finally, another important sinner, Sodomite Ser Brunetto Latino, is shown compassion through Dante's interactions and the author's diction, which suggests that Dante Alighieri seems to only respect sinners who tried to protect or create a prosperous Florence, which is why he overlooks their political stance and/or sins. Alighieri reveals his first resentful feelings towards sinners of opposite political sides whom, he believes, had no intention to contribute to the development of his ... Lucia di Lammermoor mad scene Essay Music 360 Fall 2012 History paper Lucia di Lammermoor– Mad scene Lucia di Lammermoor, written in 1835, is an opera by Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848) based on the novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter Scott. The opera is often called a masterpiece and has, thus far, stood the test of time. It was not only popular in its day, but remains popular repertory today and performed by companies around the world every year. The "Mad Scene" has been remarked as a reason to go to the opera. The scene uses motives from earlier in the opera that show a mind going insane, in addition to utilizing elaborate coloratura and vocal flourishes. This opera is said to touch the heart the way few others can do, as a masterpiece and "heralding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scott accomplished the crucial love–plight without a single word of dialogue, which is not very reasonable for opera. Happily ignoring Scott's need to move the plot along, Donizetti gives lovers, Lucia and Edgardo, a dreamy love duet theme, which breathes the essence of bel canto romantic love.12 In addition, Lucia's actions in the operatic mad scene, spur from this passage: The next evening, the physicians said, would be the crisis of her malady. It proved so; for although she awoke from her trance with some appearance of calmness, and suffered her nightclothes to be changed or put in order, yet as soon as she put her hand to her neck, as if to search for the fatal blue ribbon, a tide of recollections seemed to rush upon her, which her mind and body alike incapable of bearing.13 It is clear that the novel is the inspiration, but has been changed a little for the bel canto style and for entertainment. The opera is able to transform the characters into something a little more pleasing to the audience. One writer finds that Scott's Lucy seems inarticulate and frightening, whereas Lucia seems detached from reality but able to express sentiments in a gracious and highly stylized way.14 Lucia di Lammermoor was composed after Donizetti had returned to Naples form Paris for the premier of ... Scholar and author John Walton, as well as physician, Francis Collins argue that this is not necessarily true. Walton reminds us that we have to read the Bible carefully, as it was not written for us but for the Israelites. Walton also argues that observing natural effects does not mean that we have to remove God from our thoughts. Only our creator knows everything, and that is God. Again, I completely accept Collin's claim. Even when we have trust, reason should still be behind it. We should have complete faith in God, who used physics' reasons to help organisms survive during evolution. If the gravitational force was stronger or weaker, we would not be able to live on earth. In Genesis 1:2, we know that the earth was formless after the explosion. An indistinct earth cannot have consistent forces, and so humans would not have been able to live (Synder, 2009). God fixed the sky on the second and third day, and metaphorically it means that He made the physical constants accurately work. Gravity has been constant throughout the history of Earth, and so it played a big role in evolution of life on Earth. In Matthew 22, someone asks Jesus about the greatest commandment, and Jesus replied loving God with all your soul and mind . Using faith will get a person in a close relationship with God, but reasoning (mind) will enhance that relationship (Pollack, 2013). For example, faith lets us to follow in His footsteps by showing love, patience, kindness, forgiveness, and humbleness to others. The mind will let us understand why we should love, be patient, etc. Collins nailed perfectly on explaining this assertion. He is a Chilean poet whose words have impacted many and will continue to impact many more. Through his powerful romanticism, Neruda can express misery or passion in a single line. One of his pieces in particular, "Poema 20," "Tonight I Can Write," or "Song of Despair" expresses hidden emotions in the deepest way possible. This poem is from a collection he wrote called, "In Veinte Poemas," which he composed on his journey to the Old World, in places like Lisbon and Rangoon. The realization that the speaker has in this poem is that he once loved a woman, but he no longer does. "The night wind revolves in the sky and sings," (Line 5) includes personification of nature and Earth. The irony comes when the world "revolve" is put into perspective. This repetitive poem is solely circular as it views the same patterns of topic and emotion several times. This also helps to set the melancholy tone that the speaker possesses throughout the entire piece, adding to the unfeminist tone as well. "And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture," (Line 15) shows that the speaker is fully examining and comparing his emotions and his words on paper. His words fall as his emotions fall. The symbolism in this poem displays how often Pablo Neruda uses them as "symbolic vehicles" for the poet's salvation and self–discovery (Perez–Firmat). It is only near the end of the poem that the speaker acknowledges the woman and her physical experience. "Her voice, her bright body. Her infinite eyes." (Line 27) Just before this line the speaker questions his love for her, proving that he is consistently drawing back and forth between mixed emotions. Joan Sutherland : The Musical Periods Of The Baroque Period The Baroque period refers to an era that started around 1600 and ended around 1750, and included composers like Bach, Vivaldi and Handel, who pioneered new styles like the concerto, the sonata, and the opera. Opera encouraged composers to devise ways of illustrating moods in their music; affecting the listener's emotions became a major objective in composition during this period. Opera spread to France and England, and composers such as Rameau, Handel and Purcell began producing great works. "Joan Sutherland, was the vocal phenomenon of the postwar era" states Lord Harewood, In the days he edited Opera Magazine. She was also an opera singer from the baroque period.Vocally, she was the most complete artist of her day. Joan, was taught music by her mom, Muriel Sutherland, until she was 19, when she trained formally in Sydney with John and Aida Dickens. Hardly any other singer has had such an uninterrupted and brilliant career. Despite the many honors she has received such as Queen Elizabeth II conferred on her the title of Dame of the British Empire, the artist has remained a completely natural human being. Sutherland was dubbed "LaStupenda" by Italian critics which means "stupendous, gorgeous, great". Andrew Porter, A critic, said that he found Joan's singing "exquisite" and explained that "there was a meaning in everything she did". The Conference Of The Birds And Dante Alighieri's Inferno The overall purpose of The Conference of the Birds and Dante Alighieri's Inferno was to motivate and inspire the specific demographic within their audiences who already believed in and practiced the texts' respective denominations to continue on with their spiritual journeys. This is demonstrated by the main protagonists' spiritual journeys, the consequences of sin they both experience and witness, as well as how they relate to the audience. This topic is significant due to the fact that the two texts analyzed are examples of religious propaganda. The texts might also prove to be important and valuable to those that practice either of the two discussed religions, as the allegories could be used as a reminder of why spiritual journeys exist and how they can impact those who embark on them. One could easily make a case that this is the true reason why these were written through close analyzation of the text. The journeys depicted in the texts show the personal, spiritual growth and shift within the two main characters' outlook on God in the selected texts. This persuades believers of these two religions to continue on spiritual journeys of their own because they too are prone to benefit from spiritual growth and development. This is supported by quotes such as, "So may God grant you, reader, the benefit from reading of my poem..." (Canto XX, 457). In the time of the Enlightenment, people believed that humankind could progress and improve through the use of reason and science. One of them was French artist Jacques–Louis David, who was official artist to the French revolution (p158, Blk 3). Just as Rousseau had used his publications to reflect on his ideas, David had used art as a media to reflect the ideas and values of the society in the eighteenth century. As the particular will is a product of appetite and the general will a product of reason, we should obey the general will which makes us noble and good. Rousseau argues that when a man acts on his particular will, he is slavish to his appetite and that makes him a stupid, limited animal. Whereas, when he adopts the general will, he is being an ennobled, intelligent being. In the painting, the brothers offer their lives on behalf of the country. In doing so, they are sacrificing their personal desires for the sake of their country and are thus considered heroes, reflecting Rousseau's views. This painting is divided into three equal parts by the arches in the background and the characters correspond to each of these arches (TV12). The father is in the middle portion of the painting. The lines of perspective created by the tiled floor, draws our attention to the swords that the father is holding and the vanishing point lies just behind the handles of the sword. Our angle of vision is such that we are looking directly at the main figures groups, particularly the father. A single light source from the left of the picture illuminates the characters and also focuses our attention to the father holding the sword. This creates a 'theatrical' effect. However, Rousseau's and Marx's theories of a general will, or collective being have discrepancies in both the origin and implications of general will and individual will. Rousseau defines general will as a collective desire to advance society towards a common goal. The continuance of such an injustice could not but prove the undoing of the body politic. (Rousseau, 194–195). It is evident that Rousseau is aware of humankind's selfish desires stemming from a personal will, and he believes that if individuals begin to ignore the common will and instead act upon their personal desires and will, that it will often lead to pandemonium. This chaos is likely to destroy any Republic, as conflicting and selfish ideals will cause individuals to lose sight of the general will, leading to the collapse of a coexisting society. Rousseau, however, does not address how individual will originates, a point that Marx discusses in length in his Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts.
