1. LA VERDAD CONTRA LA MENTIRA Y LA CORRUPCIÓN DE LA HUMANIDAD Y MUNDO

La «mentira» y la «corrupción» son signos que revelan el estado de salud de las personas,
de las sociedades; afectan a la justicia, al bien común; fomentan la desconfianza, el
chantaje, el aprovechamiento de la buena voluntad; no nos dejan ser honrados con la
realidad de los pobres. Hemos escuchado: «no roben o engañen, ni mientan» (Lev 19,11-
12) porque «laverdad nos hará libres»(Jn 8,32).Sí, pero para ello hay que vivir «desechando
la mentira, cada uno hablando con la verdad con su prójimo» (Ef 4,25). La consecuencia es
clara: sólo es sujeto y por tanto verdaderamente humano, quien habla con la «verdad». La
paradoja es que los periodistas y los medios, que eran los controladores del poder, los
que debíamos exponer sus contradicciones y mentiras, nos hemos convertido en una
correa de transmisión del propio poder.
Juan el Bautista criticó el sistema político de su época con la metáfora «raza de víboras»
(Mt 23,33). Esto le costó suvida. Jesús denunció el comercio que existíaen torno alTemplo,
donde confluían actores políticos, económicos y religiosos; los comparó con una «cueva de
ladrones» (Mt 21,13), dejando al descubierto cómo vivían de la mentira, de la corrupción,
manipulando las conciencias de los pobres, quitándoles sus bienes (Mc 12,41-44). Al final lo
matan. Quien roba y miente le quita el pan, el futuro al pobre, y torna al otro en
dependiente, porque ha convertido al«dinero» en su ídolo (Lc 16,13). La confianzaesla base
de la democracia, de la representatividad y del juego de mayorías y minorías.
Jesús captó que supueblo andaba cual «ovejas sin pastor» (Mt 9,36). Nadie lo representaba
dignamente ante esta situación: el poder político lo engañaba con duras «cargas» que
apesadumbraban la vida cotidiana, y el religioso había olvidado hablar como «profeta» y
«sanar» como pastor. Uno y otro justificaban lo que sucedía. Tenían miedo (Jn 11,48). Jesús
los llama hipócritas porque eran «semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera lucen
hermosos, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de inmundicia» (Mt 23,37).
Habían hecho de la mentira un modo de vida para sostenerse en el poder, olvidando la
causa del pobre, el servicio fraterno. Sun Tzu sostiene que la mentira es parte esencial de
la guerra
La mentira deshumaniza, perturba nuestras palabras, nuestros tratos, divide a las personas
(Jn 8,44) y destruye el bien común. Herodes engañó a los sabios para matar a un inocente
(Mt 2,1-12), así como algunas autoridades acusaron falsamente a Jesús para poder
ejecutarlo (Mt 26,59). Frente a la mentira estaría la honestidad como alternativa
¿Es posible vivir de otro modo? Sí, pero hay que «cambiar». Hablar con la verdad significa
dejar de engañarnos, no tratarnos con odio, denunciar la corrupción, ser honrados ante la
realidad, no descargar la propia ira sobre otros y «decir sí cuando es sí, y no cuando es no;
porque cualquier otra cosa viene del demonio» (Mt 5,37), es decir, acciones y palabras que
«dividen», «deshumanizan» y producen «carencias». La mentirapolíticano nace eneste siglo
ni en el anterior. Tiene una larga historia: 300 años, desde la publicaciónde El arte de la mentira

2. El reto está en recuperar la calidad de vida con la que Dios nos creó: que vivamos de la
«verdad» y no de la mentira, gozando de «abundancia» y no de escasez, tratándonos
«fraternalmente» y sin odio. Estos tres signos devolverán la salud a nuestras vidas. Los
