Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech
Al Gore's speech titled "Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech" is a powerful work of literature which
serves two purposes. The first purpose is stated in the title – to accept his award of the Nobel Peace
Prize. The second intent he had when writing the speech was to reiterate his points that awarded him
the honor in the first place. The speech explains his passion for the problem in our world that is the
climate change and how much we pollute our earth. To give a short gist of what his cause was, the
following quote offers much insight to the regretful aspect of our society that he is passionate about
fixing. He says "So today, we dumped another 70 million tons of global–warming pollution into the
thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His call to actions is for us to "choose between two futures." He goes on to explain further by
challenging the reader to challenge assumption as well as repetition. Challenging us to question the
repetition that would eminently happen if we don't unify and majorly change our actions. His
persuasion is made very strong and hard–hitting when he says "we are standing at the most fateful
fork in that path. So I want to end as I began, with a vision of two futures – each a palpable
possibility – and with a prayer that we will see with vivid clarity the necessity of choosing between
those two futures, and the urgency of making the right choice now." Reading this quote gives the
feeling of being very inspired and feeling empowered. That being said, I feel Gore should have
given more concrete action that he proposes we take. He should have said things such as we should
stop allowing every person to drive a motor vehicle as much as they please. If he'd said something
along those lines, it puts a specific concern in mind and helps along the putting the reality of better,
healthier world into fruition. He also could have proposed that perhaps every person who owns a
vehicle be required to plant a tree once a year. His speech was powerful with lots of drawing of
parallels, a lot of analogies, and many accounts of making associations. While he is lacking a
concrete and specific remedy for our current situation, maybe it is okay. Perhaps all we need is to
see that we do have a choice in how we can influence the world, and the rest is up to us to draw
from the inspiration and coordinate our own, personal next move to attain the goal that has been

Gore Vidal Character Analysis
Gore Vidal is considered a one of the most celebrated writer and essayist in American literature.
With the publication of The City and the Pillar in 1948 and his essay Some Jews and the
Homosexual that published in 1981, Vidal launched the career for which he would become known, a
defender of the homosexualist. Both of these works to some degree liberated Vidal from the inner
tension he claims to have felt in his early work. He has maintained the belief that being gay is not
unnatural nor should be a person be categorized as homosexuals. The City and the Pillar is about a
teenager's discovery about his homosexuality that really shocked the readers when it first came out
in 1948. The main character in the story is Jim Willard who is uncertain and confused about his
sexuality. One summer camping trip, he and his friend, Bob Ford, were making out in the woods.
The male bonding has changed Jim's sexual awareness. Jim is hopeful that Bob and he will be
together forever, however Bob joins the Marines after high school. Eventually, Jim goes to sea
himself, trying to reunite with Bob. Along the way, Jim also finds that he is repulsed by the female
body as he is seeking affairs with men only. In this novel Jim Willard is the representation of Gore
Vidal's definition of homosexual. He counters the previous ideas that gay men are weak. Jim is not
the kind of homosexual whom most people would have thought prototypical in the 1940'. Vidal also
rejected any kind of labeling to describe

Bill Nye The Science Guy: Documentary Analysis
This article highlights Bill Nye the Science Guy and his new documentary. This article is extremely
short but mentions how Mr. Nye's mentor Carl Sagan and Neil deGrass Tyson will also be involved.
The purpose of The Truth, the documentary, is to spread truth through debates. Mr. Nye will debate
sensitive topics such as climate change and religion to well–known attractions. One of the listed
attractions is the creation museum in Kentucky. What I liked about this article was that you have a
knowledgeable figure, who is going to talk to individuals who truly stand by their beliefs regardless
of what evidence is in front of them. These tie into several of the examples for this module, to
include my two ideas of truth. Both individuals know they

Gore Vidal Suicide
"Write something, even if it's just a suicide note," said Gore Vidal. Suicide may never be the right
solution, but it is always an individual right. An individual controls what their body endures, but
most people that attempt or commit suicide have mental illnesses that cause them to think a little bit
differently than someone else. Some medicines are out there to attempt to balance neurological
chemicals to allow suicidal thoughts to go away. People have the right to leave this world whenever
they feel their time is up or coming to an end. "Private property rights refer to an owner's right to
acquire, keep, use, and dispose of property in ways that do not violate the property rights of others,"
(Williams [page 19]). Some tend to argue the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

who die by suicide have a potentially treatable mental disorder at the time of their death– a disorder

into involuntary hospitalization to get helped they do not want. This is to change their way of
thinking but in all reality it can just push them over the edge. They no longer feel like they are the
ones controlling their selves. Some people have mental illnesses such as: Schizophrenia or even just
depression (Stevens). Certain things that create higher suicide risks are things such as: previous
suicide attempt, mood disorders (Depression, Manic–Depression), Substance Abuse (Opiates,
Alcohol), Schizophrenia, Personality Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Medical Illnesses (AID's,
Huntington's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer). Every 18 minutes someone commits suicide out

leading cause of death to females as opposed to the fourth leading cause of death in men. Suicide

1878. "More than 5,000 young adults kill themselves each year," (Flanders [page 22]), "as many as
12,000 children aged 5 to 14 are hospitalized every year for deliberate self–destructive acts, such as
stabbing, burning, or taking a drug overdose." Hospitalization is the most common way to help

Humor of South Park Essay
Manbearpig: Half Man, Half Bear, Half Pig, but All Global Warming? South Park is a popular
animated comedy series written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. While the episodes of South Park
are always humorous on the surface, each show usually has a deeper, much more profound meaning
and moral. One episode of South Park entitled Manbearpig, named after the monster in the episode,
has a particularly potent deeper meaning. On the surface, the episode pokes fun at monster stories,
politics, and specifically Al Gore. Deeper down, however, this monster story can be read as a
national allegory alluding to the dangers of global warming, the problems with the politics behind
global warming, and the eventual doom we will all face if we do nothing ... Show more content on

Al Gore tells the student body that he is there to warn them about the single biggest threat to human
existence, a horrible monster named Manbearpig. Al Gore further goes on to describe the monster's
appearance. He states that Manbearpig "is half man, half bear, and half pig" (South Park). This
pokes fun at the typical monster in literature. The impossible ratio of man, bear, and pig shows how
monsters can be considered scary regardless of how ridiculous they may actually be when analyzed
literally. While Manbearpig is not necessarily intended to be scary to the audience of South Park, it
is intended to be scary to the students by Al Gore. In fact, the attributes of Manbearpig are similar to
those of many different monsters throughout literature. Manbearpig is a creature that is a mixture of
man and animal. This is a characteristic attributable to many monsters in literature. For example, the
werewolf addresses this same fear about crossing line between man and animal. Man–animal
Strauss 2 hybrid monsters are scary because they can have the intellect of man but an animalistic
nature. They are also unnatural and present the question of where they originated. Additionally,
man–animal hybrid monsters are scary because they imply that a human can become part animal.
This is, it may be possible, either willingly or unwillingly, to become a man–animal hybrid. Al Gore

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?
Through its contrasting reality and dreamlike scenes, Oates' "Where Are You Going, Where Have
You Been?" uses details from a true American horror story to convey a message about society, youth
and a loss of innocence. Arizona native Charles Schmid murdered Alleen Rowe on May 31, 1964.
Schmid was considered a serial killer and was subsequently arrested and convicted of the heinous
crimes that he was accused of. The profile of Schmid as a short man who wore makeup, wigs and
altered boots to make him appear taller, were used by Oates in her story to describe the antagonist,
Arnold Friend. In the story and in real life the antagonist/Schmid, uses his fake looks, money and
smooth talking as a way to get people to follow him; giving him ... Show more content on

If not thought about or read over more than once, the fact that Connie's father was almost a phantom
in her life might be missed. In this era, fathers in particular were not very active in their children's
lives, daughters especially; they were the mother's problem. This same idea carries over to the father
of Connie's best girlfriend, who after driving them to the stores or movies "...never even bothered to
ask what they had done." (Oates, "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?"), the name of
the story is also a question that should be asked of any daughter by her father. The fathers in
question here display a sense of total apathy to the question of what their daughters are actually
doing. These fathers came from a time in the 40's and 50's when men worried about men things and
woman issues were exactly that. Men and in particular fathers of that time made no effort to be
involved in their daughters lives as they are today. Oates noticed that issue in society and attached it
to her work in this story although minutely. The main conflict in Connie's life is trying to balance a
fine line between the way she acts at home in front of her mother, and her secret wild side which she
only shows to her friends and the boys she meets. Oates' characterization of Connie is that of a

Politics Is A Rare Sight, The Best Man, By Gore Vidal
"Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do."
stated by Potter Stewart. Ethics in politics are a rare sight, "The Best Man" by Gore Vidal brings this
issue up. Although the script was written in the 1960's when the election was between Nixon and
Kennedy it still relates to current elections between Trump and Clinton. Today's politicians are no
better than the ones from the past. However, Gore Vidal gives his character William Russell a set of
morals. He also give other characters, no set of morals. The script relates to ample situations
happening in the 2016 presidential election. Such as scheming against one another or personalities
that are similar. The script also has some differences with today's politics. Including, the role of
females and William Russell's kindness. First off, There are many similarities with the characters in
the play and today's politicians. In the same way that "The Best Man" depicts Cantwell and Russell,
one can easily notice the rivalry between Trump and Clinton. For instance, Cantwell stole Russell's
health records and intended on blackmailing him with it. In a similar manner Trump continues to
bring up Hillary's health such as "She took a short–circuit to the brain."..."Honestly, I don't think
she's all there." Stated by the article "Trump's Sickening Attacks on Hillary's Health," from the
Washington Post. However, Russell at one point counterattacks with a threat that frightens Cantwell,

Summary Of Making All Drugs By Gore Vidal
In the beginning of Gore Vidal's essay he starts off by telling people that making all drugs legal is
the right choice. He also stated that by putting the warnings on the dug bottles will prevent people
from getting addicted. I believe his reasonings are not believable. People will get addicted to drugs
even with the knowledge off the bad side effects. Drugs are terrible for a person's health and even if
the United States makes them legal people will misuse them. Although Vidal stated that he tried
every drug and didn't get addicted to any of the, but he only tried them all once. Some people do not
have a strong willed mind to stop at just one use. On the other hand, the legalization of marijuana is
more realistic. Marijuana is still a very

J.D. Salinger's Catcher In The Rye and Burr Steers' Igby...
Comparative Essay
The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger and Igby Goes Down by Burr Steers are both displayed as
rites of passage texts. The respective protagonists of these two texts are Igby Slocumb and Holden
Caulfield. These two characters are both on a journey motif, a journey of self discovery in which
they both attempt to find meaning in life and understand societies values and attitudes. The two
protagonists demonstrate non–conformity and rebel against the apparent hypocrisy present in their
respective societies. Hypocrisy can be defined as the difference between illusion and reality, in
accordance to society it can be seen as people who are not who they appear to be, people who apply
a façade. This hypocrisy is present in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's awful. If I'm on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm

he provides the responder with reason to believe that he applies a façade by expressing false
pretences. This quotation also provides the audience with reason to think that Holden is not mentally
healthy; this literary technique is called foreshadowing. The rebellious attitudes demonstrated by
both Holden and Igby represent their attitudes to the concept of hypocrisy. Igby and Holden have
similar values and beliefs which reject this idea of illuding reality. Holden rejects all materialistic
value and success which corroborates with Igby's attitudes in rejecting the American Dream in
which his Godfather, D.H., has achieved. Neither of these two characters view, so called success, the
way that the rest of society does.
Another aspect of the respective texts is how the two protagonists display their individuality in order
to separate themselves from everyone else, they desire to be unique. This perception of reality is
articulated through the symbolism in The Catcher In The Rye and the wardrobe and lighting features
utilised throughout the movie Igby Goes Down. Holden's red hunting hat becomes inseparable from
the image of Holden. This hat is perceived as a symbol of his uniqueness and personality. The hat is
outlandish, and it shows that Holden desires to

Drugs, By Gore Vidal
Drugs
In the article "Drugs" by Gore Vidal the author claims that if the United States wants to stop most
drug addiction, crimes, value of the product. Then they should simply make all drugs available and
sell them at cost. The first strategy the authors addresses is that if drugs were to be available to
everybody then it will stop most drug addiction. The author claims that if drugs were to be sold
there would be regulations towards having this allowed. For example, the people who are mentally
ill will not be able to consume the product, because it will attract an addiction towards them and that
is what they are trying to avoid. For those who are not mentally ill will be able to use the product.
The author claims that their will always be drug addicts, but at least their will be not as many as
there were before. The second strategies the author addresses are that if drugs were to be allowed by
consumers then crimes towards drugs will decrease, because it being allowed to use. The mafia and
drugs dealers will not have any penalty towards them for having or selling drugs for it being not an
issue to use hear in the United States. I agree with the author claims upon crimes not being an issue
no more if drugs were to be allowed to use here in the United States. I think over the years there has
been a numerous amount of people in jail for having and selling drugs and having them in jail is
costing the American people allot of money. I believe the real criminals here are

Comparing Politics In The Best Man And The Novel Burr
Gore Vidal was many things, including a liberal author, playwright, and political activist, with two
of his works being the play The Best Man and the novel Burr. While both The Best Man and Burr
both show the corruptness of politics and the people in it, The Best Man focuses on the pursuit for
power and how far some people are willing to go to get it, where Burr targets many of the founding
fathers as not being the heroes we were once taught they were. In The Best Man, Cantwell shows a
bare, grasping want for more power by high office and will do anything it takes to obtain that, where
Russell, who wants the same thing as Cantwell, has morals and struggles with the question of what
is right and wrong, and how far is too far in the quest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
George Washington is painted as an incompetent military commander who has no idea how to win a
war, but a keen politician who knows how to play the game of politics well. Throughout the novel,
Washington is portrayed as someone who thinks himself a king or god. "I wondered if I should drop
to one knee. With each year's new defeats, the ceremony of Washington's court became more royal"
(110). ""What was Washington's most notable trait?" I once asked Hamilton...."Oh, Burr, self–love!
Self–love! What else makes a god?"" (125). Thomas Jefferson is an unsurpassed self–righteous
hypocrite, but still earns Burr's approval as being the greatest politician and empire builder of his
age. James Madison, who was doggedly loyal to his mentor and was aware of Jefferson's dishonesty,
is seen as a complicated figure who was most remarkable in his subtle development of constitutional
principles. Alexander Hamilton, bastard–born and therefore not accepted into higher society, despite
his status, was brutally ambitious and argumentative, and finally goes too far in accusing Burr of
incest with his daughter Theodosia, perhaps to finally send Burr tumbling down the political ladder
so he can climb

The Impact Human have on Our Planet
"Many people today assume mistakenly that the Earth is so big that we humans cannot possibly

"An Inconvenient Truth." He talks about how global warming is affecting our way of life and how it
is affecting the Earth. He mentions facts about the misconceptions that surround global warming,
which is very surprising to see and hear that our Earth is being affected by the things we do in our

Drugs Case For Legalizing Marijuana By Gore Vidal Case Study
What would be your solution to end drug addiction? In the essay, Drugs: Case for Legalizing
Marijuana", Gore Vidal argues his solution, to legalize all drugs along with marijuana, to end drug
addiction. Marijuana along with other drugs should not be legalized because they will cause more
harm than good, begin leading to drug after drug, and would forever affect the world. Drugs aren't
just bad for some people, they are bad for everyone. Vidal states "Label each drug with a precise
description of what effect–good or bad– the drug will have on whoever takes it." Each drug will
have a different affect, but none of them will be good ones. Although they may seem "good" at first,
the outcome in the end is something that takes time to come back ... Show more content on

He argues that you can try them as many times as you want. I disagree, the "trying" will eventually
turn into something more. And you will eventually become a drug user. Each drug has its own
extent in which if you know the extent, you shouldn't even consider trying it. Vidal states that, "Yet
it seems most unlikely that any reasonably sane person will become a drug addict if he knows in
advance what addiction is going to be like.". It doesn't matter how sane you are, anyone could
become a drug addict. Everyone hits their low spot in life and sometimes the best people fall
through and turn to something, and that something could be drugs. Yes, there will be the ones who
always become addicts, but it can be prevented. If drugs were legalized, it will forever affect the
world. It will not only affect people now but people in the future. Vidal talks about the war on drugs
and government at the end of his essay. He states that "nothing sensible will be done" and it will
only get "worse". What would only get worse is if drugs were actually legalized and people began to
use them more and more. If the government keeps fighting the war against drugs, a better solution
will come up to end drug use and drug addiction. Eventually drugs could be belittled. Vidal
mentions that "Every man, has the power (should have the power), to kill himself is he chooses.".
This is a true statement but his way of using this sentence, I disagree with. If a person is choosing to

critical analysis of Drugs by Vidal Gore
Critical Response of 'Drugs–Vidal Gore'
The article 'Drugs' by Gore Vidal was written in order to pace forward a tough case for legalizing all
types of drugs in United States of America. He tends to explain the basic human philosophy and the
chronological happenings to bring forward this obstacle. First and foremost he brings into front
three main arguments concerning the usage of drugs. He deems and strongly claims that by making
the drugs illegal does not help to obstruct the drug addiction or trafficking infact they give rise to
such activities. Moreover, he endows with the reasons as to how the process of legalization would

Vidal makes use of these irrational arguments in order to get marijuana or other drugs legalized . If
these drugs wouldn't have been so addictive, why in the first place would they be illegal? When a
person is being involved in such activities it is not merely difficult in fact out of the question to
decide the good and bad for that particular person. Hence, the advice that Vidal puts forward of
labeling the drugs would be of no use, hardly any person would be interested in reading. This step of
legalizing the drugs would enhance their spirit and addictiveness towards the drugs. Activities which
are normally carried out underground would then be carried out openly with ant hesitation.
This writing in particular was a pretty courageous attempt. Taking into consideration the era in
which this article was published 1970, at that period in time harmony, adoration and drug for
everyone was a reality. At that instance putting forward this idea would be inclined to be considered
as an unbelievable comic story or a severe cause offend to the US government. The idea which
Vidal places is not an innovative idea although it was an intimidating one. Vidal's article, without
any uncertainty is valiant chunk; however it fails to endow its audience a direct and clear plan or
reason of why the drugs should be legalized, except for the idea that it is the basic right of the
people

Examining the Economic Platform of a Political Party

These two very important issues play a very big part in the upcoming presidential Election of 2000.
The Economic issues are very crucial in his bid to become our countries next president. The
following things discussed in my paper show us how Al Gore and the Democratic Party stand on
very important issues for the future.

take it from its current position as general taxation. Gore is trying to preserve its basic guarantees,
pay down our debt and all of that makes it possible and easier to meet the other challenges set forth
by Al gore and the Democratic party.
Another big economic issue in the presidential race is tax reform. Gore is prepared with several,
thought to be successful, plans for tax cuts and reforms should he be elected. The Clinton
administration had successful "disciplined" and "prudent" economic policies which Gore states he
would like to continue (Al Gore on Tax Reform). In reserve, Gore would like to set aside $300
billion in instance that the rosy projections do not materialize. Gore promises to make up to $10,000
in college tuition tax deductions in order to increase enrollment (Al Gore on Tax Reform).
Most of Gore's campaign focuses on family itself. He proposes lowering taxes for families with
targeted tax reform. The plan Gore suggests, will make the burden of taxes on the so–called "middle
class" families the lowest they have been in over 50 years. By helping families pay for college
through the College Opportunity Tax Cut, long–term care needs will also be met. This initiative, for

If today I told you that I have climbed Africa's highest mountain on my hands and wheelchair, and
actually got to the top, chances are, you would not believe me. I wouldn't blame you though. Even I
did not think I could do it. At least not with my condition, I have no legs from the pelvis down due
to a genetic ailment.
But I have! Four years ago, alongside my best mates, David and Alex, I actually climbed Mt.
Kilimanjaro to the very top. In so doing, we raised close to four hundred thousand pounds for
provision of clean water for the locals. You may wonder how this was made possible. Well, I will
tell you how.

Persuasive Essay On Global Warming
Throughout the tides of time, mankind has been pitted against such foes as the plague, the ice age,
and the toba supervolcano. The ability of humans to thrive even in the harshest conditions through
the power of their minds has come to be their hallmark. Today, mankind has to conquer perhaps its
greatest foe yet: global warming. Though the future is fraught with uncertainty and humanity has
many imperfections, mankind will prevail against this foe through its ingenuity and ability to adapt.
One of the leading arguments for the extinction of mankind is that our mistreatment of the
environment will result in natural catastrophes which will end in humanity's demise. In An
Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore provides compelling evidence for the impact that humans are having on
the planet, focusing on reductions in glacier volume, the strong correlation between temperature and
carbon dioxide when compared to time, and the increase in global carbon dioxide described in the
Keeling curve (Guggenheim). However, despite bringing up a valid point, the only methods Al Gore
discusses for combating global warming involve major personal sacrifices. His failure to consider
alternative options which would substantially reduce global warming without requiring major
sacrifices by most humans has major implications for humanity's projected future. Recent studies
have shown that injecting carbon dioxide into reactive basalts triggers carbonation, "permanently
converting injected gaseous carbon dioxide

Gore Vidal and Legalization of Marijuana
Gore Vidal, An American writer acknowledge for writing plays, essays, and novels is also famously
known for the essay "Drugs: Case for legalizing Marijuana." In this essay, he talks about the effects
of legalizing Marijuana. As he begins to talk about the possible ways of stopping addiction, he
analyzes modern society while critiquing the flaws of preventative laws against illegal substances.
Using himself as an approach to explain that addiction does not occur after one intake; however
after various usage. Vidal testifies that he has experimented with almost all illegal substances and
can attest that he has not became addicted to any of them (Vidal). Realizing that the solution to
preventing drug addiction in America is a simple task, Vidal solution is to make all drugs available,
while selling them at a cost. When putting all illegal substances on the market, a label detailing the
affects, good or bad, when a person consumes such substances (Vidal). As people are entitle to their
own actions, it is impossible to completely rid the world, much a country, of drug addiction. Vidal
explains that everyone in this world is not sane and that there will be addicts and substance abusers.
Similar to those who choose to end their life, the issue will remain persistent only just at a reduce
minimum (Vidal). Realizing that due to a substances illegalization, people tend to crave more of the
substance because it is not allowed. With all substances, including Marijuana, becomes legalized

The Election of 2000
The election of 2000 was the closest and most controversial election in all U.S. history. This event
was the fierce competition full of irregularities and unfairness between George W. Bush and Al Gore
to become the first president elected in the 21st century that turned into an intense political and legal
battle to decide the presidency. It was such an interesting and unique election because unlike how
elections are supposed to work, the election of 2000, for many unique reasons, did not end with a
clear winner. This event was not only an election, but a test of american democracy that challenged
many people's trust in the american court system, and left millions of americans asking the question,

this race would come. Bush had the first lead that lasted until august 2000 when gore took the lead

voting it showed that the popular vote was nearly tied, Gore beating bush by around 500,000 votes,
only a 0.5% lead. Bush had 47.9% of the popular vote and Gore had 48.4%. Ralph Nader had a

A Crisis Of Character By Jody Williams
A Crisis of Character American political activist Jody Williams once said "There's a mythology that
if you want to change the world, you have to be sainted like Mother Teresa or Archbishop Desmond
Tutu. But ordinary people with lives that go up and down and around in circles can still contribute to
change." In an excerpt from his essay "Why Bother?" published in the New York Times Magazine,
American public intellectual Michael Pollan reveals his goal to convince ordinary American citizens
that they are capable of changing their behavior in order to reduce America's carbon footprint.
Through the use of the four rhetorical elements situation, purpose, claim, and audience, Pollan
aspires to have his readers gain a greater understanding that the environmental crisis is "at heart a
crisis of character" (Pollan 766). However, although Pollan targets the correct audience to carry out
his purpose, he fails to provide proper evidence to support his claim that individual contribution
matters.
Pollan states that the situation that first motivated him to write about his distress over the state of the
environment came from a televised lecture made by American politician and environmentalist Al
Gore, entitled An Inconvenient Truth. The documentary was intended to raise awareness about the
dangers of global warming and encourage people to take appropriate action to successfully reverse
climate change. Pollan recalls that the "really dark moment [of the lecture] came during the closing

Mistranslation And Mistranslation In The Joy Luck Club
Mistranslation was a reoccurring theme in the book, The Joy Luck Club. There were frequent
scenarios when characters could not understand each other properly due to mistranslation and
miscommunication. Jing Mei has trouble understanding her mother in the following excerpt: ""It's
not showoff." She said the two soups were almost the same, chabudwo. Or maybe she said butong,
not the same thing at all. It was one of those Chinese expressions that means the better half of mixed
intentions. I can never remember things I didn't understand in the first place." Jing Mei cannot fully
understand her mother's intended meanings to a multitude of conversations due to this. Waverly
Jong had a certain run in with the language barrier as well. "Aii–ya. So shame be with mother?" She
grasped my hand even tighter as she glared at me. I looked down. "It's not that, it's just so obvious.
It's just so embarrassing." "Embarrass you be my daughter?" Her voice was cracking with anger.
"That's not what I meant. That's not what I said."" Waverly is trying her best to explain to her
mother that she does not want her mother to say that she is her daughter to every person she meets
and the underlying feel of becoming a trophy for her mother. Her mother has difficulty
understanding this and she gets angry at her daughter. This miscommunication escalates the hurt
feelings felt between both parties.
This theme of mistranslation can be found everywhere in the current world. In the article Language
Matters: How a Minor Mistranslation Can Affect US–China Relations the author goes on to talk
about how the U.S. mistranslated a small portion of the Chinese spokesman's comments. He goes on
to explain how these stories affected the United States of America. He says: "These stories led
Sebastian Gorka, a top official on the U.S. National Security Council, to deride China's statement by
pointing out that the islands can be seen on Google Earth. Gorka then went on to decry China's
"territorial expansionism."" Gorka's broadcast was heard by the nation and some peoples ideas
might have been swayed that the Chinese are bad. This relates to the The Joy Luck Club in one way
particular, the idea that the smallest miscommunication problems can lead to a huge

The Star Of An Inconvenient Truth
Nowadays, individuals of societies have adapted a self–centered mindset and a loss of consideration
for the world they live in. In order to come across an audience who have lost a sense of ethical
conduct, Al Gore, the star of An Inconvenient Truth, produced by Davis Guggenheim, formulates a
thorough presentation that exposes the foreboding threat of global warming, proclaiming that
humanity's only hope in resolving this worldwide issue will result from selfless, human action.
Gore's use of ethos through real–life recordings and graphic simulations support Gore's claim that
his motivation stems from obvious, moral reasons; however, his inclusion of his past failures and

Such a direct and visual exposure ensures that the audience can grasp a vivid and wholesome
comprehension of the foreboding disasters that can follow global warming, emphasized by Gore's
claim that, "I don 't really consider this a political issue, I consider it to be a moral issue
(Inconvenient). Gore's original claim, that moral and ethical reasons drive him towards raising
awareness of global warming, aligns with his heavy reliance on ethos from visual representation to
persuade the audience. However, Gore's ongoing references to his past history and recent success
challenges the notion that he finds inspiration from moral and ethical reasons alone, but rather
indicates Gore's underlying motivation to use pathos and gain validity from the audience in order to
make up for his past failure as a politician. During many occasions throughout the documentary,
Gore provides insight of his past experiences, showing real news broadcasts that outline his
presidency and even referencing directly to the audience, such as jokingly claiming, "I 'm Al Gore, I
used to be the next president of the United States of America", and following up the audience's
laughter by humorously adding, "I don 't find that particularly funny" as the first impression he has
on the viewers (Inconvenient). Later on,

Examples Of Drug Legalization By Gore Vidal
Drug Legalization
Drug abuse has progressively, over the last thirty years, become a tool for crime organizations and
bureaucracies, independent and under the control of the federal government, used to transform drug
addiction into a profit through the passage of countless laws against drug abuse. Gore Vidal's
assertive essay communicated his belief that drug addiction should be legalized in order to ensure
the eventual well–being and individual freedom guaranteed to Americans by the constitution. When
drugs were made illegal, freedom of choice for Americans was chiseled away by the hard–
hammering central government. Many agree with Vidal in that drugs that are now illegal would be
just as dangerous and addictive if they were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his fifth paragraph, Vidal stated that it seems most unlikely that any sane person will become a
drug addict if he knows what drug addiction is like. Many whole–heartedly agree with this
statement because they are active advocates of natural selection that applies greatly to drug abuse,
provided the user is not mentally ill. Vidal ended his assertion of the popular issues by stating that
people will always become drug addicts, as people will always become alcoholics and forbidding
people the things they like will make them want it even more. This is absolutely true because
Americans are most definitely taken aback and angered when their freedoms are suddenly made
punishable by the interference of governmental bureaucracy. It is, in my mind, eminently
disconcerting to even attempt to perceive why the government could not look back at the initial
reasons for the foundation of our "free country" and realize what happens when individual liberties
are taken away by an oppressive, outside force and conclude that those who do not remember the
past are condemned to repeat it. When the government refuses or disagrees with this statement, I
believe that they are overlooking the fact that our meager two hundred years of existence as a
liberated and free country is after all a very minute frame of reference in the greater scheme of
human life. To finalize his essay, Vidal, in paragraph nine, assessed the profiteering of bureaucratic
government through

Analysis Of The Book ' The Catcher Of The Rye '
Reaching adulthood for many individuals leaves them instilled with curiosity and unaware of what
to come. Characters like Iggy Slocomb and Holden Caulfield are lead through a journey of self–
driven motifs to better understanding there true place in life and adjusting accordingly. Nonetheless
there view on society has left them believing hypocrisy is a trait carried through many, and thus
falsely believing they are exempt from it. Hypocrisy is viewed as the process of stating moral
standards or beliefs in which one self does not follow. Although both characters are seen with this
theme, it's not the only one present. In the book The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and the
movie Igby Goes Down by Burr Steers hypocrisy, self–Isolation and the deception of adult–hood
are themes that re–illiterate the coming of age for young–adults like Holden Caulfield and Igby

The Necklace Short Story
How one reacts to the truth tells displays a great deal about the person. Do they fight the truth? Do
they hide from it? Or do they accept the truth and do the best they can with their situation? The
quote "We don't get to choose what is true. We only get to choose what we do about it." from Kami
Garcia states that when presented with a challenge or an inconvenient truth, one cannot change the
circumstances given, but they do have a choice in how they react to it. In addition, no one way of
handling truth is right or wrong and everyone will react differently to a situation. Nevertheless, there
are still better and worse ways of handling it. A example of someone poorly handing the truth can be
found within the short story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. In the story, Mme. Loisel, a
main character, refuses to accept that she is not a wealthy and affluent woman, this causes her to be
pessimistic about her life and consistently causes her to live within a reality she has fabricated for
herself, shown by the quote "She imagined silent antechambers, heavy with Oriental tapestries, lit
by torches in lofty bronze sockets, with two tall footmen in knee–breeches sleeping in large arm–
chairs, overcome by the heavy warmth of the stove." Later in the story Monsieur Loisel receives an

Rhetorical Analysis Of Global Warming By Al Gore
Al Gore is known as an environmentalist, author and American politician. He was vice president
throughout the Clinton administration and he wrote three best–selling books. Al Gore and the UN's
Intergovernmental panel on Climate change went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He gave a speech
over global warming in 2004. In his speech he talks about the effects of global warming and their
causes such as environmental effects, population, technology and the way people think. One of the
first points Al Gore makes in his speech is that evidence of global warming can be seen everywhere.
He says "if you look at glaciers around the world, you see that, many are melting away." He then
provides facts to show possible effects that could happen in the future. Al Gore explains that
"ninety–five percent" of fresh water is "locked up" as ice in the Antarctic. In his speech he continues
to explain that if the world continues to warm up, the ice will continue to melt causing the sea level
to rise drastically, which could permanently flood some coastal cities. He then warns that glaciers
reflect most of the sun energy "like a big mirror." If the glaciers continue to melt the sun's energy
wouldn't bounce back and will cause more evaporation and eventually precipitation which could
lead to a large increase of powerful storms. "You get ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Religion and Politics have played a loud and at some times discordant counterpoint in the United

Whether or not religion will continue to be a constructive voice in politics in the decades a head is
an open question. Scientific materialism has made it more difficult for religious believer to
effectively join the public debate: and the dramatic secularization of public life in recent years has
added new barriers to mixing faith in politics. Even so, the United States remains one of the most
religious nations in the industrialized world, and it would be foolish to discount the inherent power
of religious idealism for animating social and political reform.

Por otro lado, cuando hay demasiados gases de efecto invernadero, más rayos están atrapados en la

Vidal explains how it's the United States Governments fault because the crime spree would be
decreased. Vidal also believes that fighting against drugs is nearly as a big business as trying to stop
them because people always want what they can't have. By legalizing drugs will enable people
easier access to them but also, taking away the thrill of getting them. For example, giving people
their wants only makes the person lose less value of their excitement which has to do a big role in
reverse psychology. To confuse people of their wants and needs.
2. Vidal addresses my concerns because drug dealing and the mafia business will decrease rapidly
and there would not be as much crimes in the American society. Yes, Vidal does consider both sides
of the issue because he there is a combination of sin and money between the mafia and the
American people. Both of the combinations of sin and money are two most valuable things because
are irresistible and it has been repeated for many centuries. In addition, Vidal claims that forbidding
people to do something they hold in interest of will only cause the person to pursue their interest
more.

Climate Change : The United States
Intro 2 climate change
Not two weeks ago, I was floating on a noodle, beer in hand, life and conversation good; when the
topic of climate change came up and I was presented with an opportunity to ponder why people see
the same things so differently.
It started when a new friend seemed unaware and untroubled that 2016 is on track to be the hottest
year on record, making it the third year in a row to set this record. When I asked if he believed
climate change was happening, he said that he did, but he was quick to point out that that climate
change has occurred many times in the earth 's history and this is just another one of those times.
But when I tried to point out the difference with the current climate change phenomenon from the
historic ones is when it got interesting. He passionately disagreed that human activity has anything
to do with it. Then I, in higher octave, countered with "But the scientific community is united about
this. We are the cause of this ..." Before I could finish he replied "That's not true, there are plenty of
scientists who don 't agree it is man made." I wanted to explode with the quotes, facts, figures to
clearly refute his position, when a curious thing happened: I had nothing. I found myself reaching
for my intellectual "piece" and realized that it had no bullets. While I was certain he was
blaspheming atop a glass mountain, I had no stone to throw, not even a peltable pebble, except, "Oh
yeah! Well my scientists are smarter than your

Frank Zappa really called it. As I was listening to him speak, I found myself in agreement with
everything he said in the clip shown in Blackboard; much of what he, John Denver and Dee Snider
said echoes my sentiments. I especially agree with his comments that the basis for the PMRC was a
distraction from other issues that the Senate was attempting to sneak by an unsuspecting American
public; furthermore, I believe this served as a means to further Al Gore's political agenda. Tipper
Gore resigning from the PMRC in 1992 after Al became vice–president proves just that.
Additionally, I too believe that the Senate Committee hearings were an abuse of power, and also a
major conflict of interest to head or preside as a member of any committee ... Show more content on

Does the 1st amendment protect their freedom of speech? Again, absolutely and resoundingly, yes.
John Denver stated this eloquently, saying that suppression should not be tolerated in society and
censorship is the first step to suppression; he continues on likening it to Nazi Germany; which
banned and burned books.
Is their material "pornographic"? Explicit language, most definitely, pornographic, in my opinion,
no. However, to others, maybe; since the word graphic can be used to mean illustrative, pictorial,
drawn, diagrammatic, visual, in this sense, not necessarily. Used in the context of the other
meanings of graphic; such as, explicit, lifelike, realistic, vivid, striking, detailed, full, clear, leaving
nothing to the imagination, than I would say yes it could be considered pornographic.
Is the 2LC album cover derogatory towards women? I do not believe it is, the cover depicts women
in thong bikini swim suits; which you see women wearing on beaches everywhere in the world.
Can you think of any example of men being placed in a sexist role similar to the depiction of
women on the 2LC album cover? Yes, I can. On the cover and inside pages of Playgirl magazine;
which was founded in 1973, during the height of the feminist movement in response to men's
magazines such as Playboy, founded in 1953; and Penthouse, founded in 1965; which we all know
featured similar photos of women.

Snowboarding Jackets Essay
Snowboarding jackets are an essential piece of gear that should keep the rider warm, comfortable
and protected from the harsh cold when riding on the slopes. The jackets are designed with many
features and take into account different atmosphere conditions, along with the requirements of the
sport itself. When purchasing a jacket the rider needs to look at the two types of jackets, the Three–
Layer System, the features of the jacket, and a few different technological fabrics. All of these
aspects are important when searching for the perfect snowboarding jacket. The first step in
purchasing a snowboarding jacket is determining what kind. There are two types, cold–weather
jackets and warm–weather jackets. Whether a rider is shredding ... Show more content on

There are three functions for this layer, which include waterproof, windproof, and breathability. To
be considered waterproof, a piece of clothing has to "bear a water column of 4 to 5 ft" (1).
Snowboarding jackets must also have taped seams, prevent water penetration, and covered zippers.
The next function in the system is windproof. The windproof of a jacket is very important. Not only
can the lack of this make the rider uncomfortable, but it can also affect the breathability quality of
the outer layer. The breathability quality allows riders to ventilate their body through the fabric on
the jacket and pushes perspiration away. While the Three–Layer System is important and needed in
every jacket, so are the features that a snowboarding jacket can acquire. Features in snowboarding
jackets can be a very handy necessity with some snowboarders, but may not be to others depending
on skill level. Some of these features include; powder skirts, wrist gaiters, venting zips, hoods,
shells, pockets, and taped seams. Of all features, the powder skirt is the most useful. This feature
prevents snow from coming up into the jacket if a wipeout occurs. Similar to the powder skirt are
wrist gaiters, which prevent snow from going up the sleeves or into the rider's gloves. Venting zips
located under the armpit are definitely a necessity in a snowboarding jacket for those warmer days
on the slopes. The vents are constructed

Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech

  • 1. Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech Al Gore's speech titled "Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech" is a powerful work of literature which serves two purposes. The first purpose is stated in the title – to accept his award of the Nobel Peace Prize. The second intent he had when writing the speech was to reiterate his points that awarded him the honor in the first place. The speech explains his passion for the problem in our world that is the climate change and how much we pollute our earth. To give a short gist of what his cause was, the following quote offers much insight to the regretful aspect of our society that he is passionate about fixing. He says "So today, we dumped another 70 million tons of global–warming pollution into the thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His call to actions is for us to "choose between two futures." He goes on to explain further by challenging the reader to challenge assumption as well as repetition. Challenging us to question the repetition that would eminently happen if we don't unify and majorly change our actions. His persuasion is made very strong and hard–hitting when he says "we are standing at the most fateful fork in that path. So I want to end as I began, with a vision of two futures – each a palpable possibility – and with a prayer that we will see with vivid clarity the necessity of choosing between those two futures, and the urgency of making the right choice now." Reading this quote gives the feeling of being very inspired and feeling empowered. That being said, I feel Gore should have given more concrete action that he proposes we take. He should have said things such as we should stop allowing every person to drive a motor vehicle as much as they please. If he'd said something along those lines, it puts a specific concern in mind and helps along the putting the reality of better, healthier world into fruition. He also could have proposed that perhaps every person who owns a vehicle be required to plant a tree once a year. His speech was powerful with lots of drawing of parallels, a lot of analogies, and many accounts of making associations. While he is lacking a concrete and specific remedy for our current situation, maybe it is okay. Perhaps all we need is to see that we do have a choice in how we can influence the world, and the rest is up to us to draw from the inspiration and coordinate our own, personal next move to attain the goal that has been ... • 2. Gore Vidal Character Analysis Gore Vidal is considered a one of the most celebrated writer and essayist in American literature. With the publication of The City and the Pillar in 1948 and his essay Some Jews and the Homosexual that published in 1981, Vidal launched the career for which he would become known, a defender of the homosexualist. Both of these works to some degree liberated Vidal from the inner tension he claims to have felt in his early work. He has maintained the belief that being gay is not unnatural nor should be a person be categorized as homosexuals. The City and the Pillar is about a teenager's discovery about his homosexuality that really shocked the readers when it first came out in 1948. The main character in the story is Jim Willard who is uncertain and confused about his sexuality. One summer camping trip, he and his friend, Bob Ford, were making out in the woods. The male bonding has changed Jim's sexual awareness. Jim is hopeful that Bob and he will be together forever, however Bob joins the Marines after high school. Eventually, Jim goes to sea himself, trying to reunite with Bob. Along the way, Jim also finds that he is repulsed by the female body as he is seeking affairs with men only. In this novel Jim Willard is the representation of Gore Vidal's definition of homosexual. He counters the previous ideas that gay men are weak. Jim is not the kind of homosexual whom most people would have thought prototypical in the 1940'. Vidal also rejected any kind of labeling to describe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Bill Nye The Science Guy: Documentary Analysis This article highlights Bill Nye the Science Guy and his new documentary. This article is extremely short but mentions how Mr. Nye's mentor Carl Sagan and Neil deGrass Tyson will also be involved. The purpose of The Truth, the documentary, is to spread truth through debates. Mr. Nye will debate sensitive topics such as climate change and religion to well–known attractions. One of the listed attractions is the creation museum in Kentucky. What I liked about this article was that you have a knowledgeable figure, who is going to talk to individuals who truly stand by their beliefs regardless of what evidence is in front of them. These tie into several of the examples for this module, to include my two ideas of truth. Both individuals know they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Gore Vidal Suicide "Write something, even if it's just a suicide note," said Gore Vidal. Suicide may never be the right solution, but it is always an individual right. An individual controls what their body endures, but most people that attempt or commit suicide have mental illnesses that cause them to think a little bit differently than someone else. Some medicines are out there to attempt to balance neurological chemicals to allow suicidal thoughts to go away. People have the right to leave this world whenever they feel their time is up or coming to an end. "Private property rights refer to an owner's right to acquire, keep, use, and dispose of property in ways that do not violate the property rights of others," (Williams [page 19]). Based on research, "90% of people who die by suicide have a potentially treatable mental disorder at the time of their death– a disorder that often has gone unrecognized and untreated" ("Understanding Suicide"). Most people are forced into involuntary hospitalization to get helped they do not want. This is to change their way of thinking but in all reality it can just push them over the edge. They no longer feel like they are the ones controlling their selves. Some people have mental illnesses such as: Schizophrenia or even just depression (Stevens). Certain things that create higher suicide risks are things such as: previous suicide attempt, mood disorders (Depression, Manic–Depression), Substance Abuse (Opiates, Alcohol), Schizophrenia, Personality Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Medical Illnesses (AID's, Huntington's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer). Every 18 minutes someone commits suicide out of the 7.125 billion people who live on the "surface of the Planet Earth that is 510,051,300 square kilometers..."(Jamison [page 107]). About one percent of Americans have Schizophrenia. People with this mental illness see, hear and feel other people or presents living around or inside them. It is an imbalance in a complex part of the brain ("What is Schizophrenia?"). Suicide is the second leading cause of death to females as opposed to the fourth leading cause of death in men. Suicide rates for young adults between 15 and 24 have increases three times as much between 1958 and 1878. "More than 5,000 young adults kill themselves each year," (Flanders [page 22]), "as many as 12,000 children aged 5 to 14 are hospitalized every year for deliberate self–destructive acts, such as stabbing, burning, or taking a drug overdose." • 6. Humor of South Park Essay Manbearpig: Half Man, Half Bear, Half Pig, but All Global Warming? South Park is a popular animated comedy series written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. While the episodes of South Park are always humorous on the surface, each show usually has a deeper, much more profound meaning and moral. One episode of South Park entitled Manbearpig, named after the monster in the episode, has a particularly potent deeper meaning. On the surface, the episode pokes fun at monster stories, politics, and specifically Al Gore. Deeper down, however, this monster story can be read as a national allegory alluding to the dangers of global warming, the problems with the politics behind global warming, and the eventual doom we will all face if we do nothing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Al Gore tells the student body that he is there to warn them about the single biggest threat to human existence, a horrible monster named Manbearpig. Al Gore further goes on to describe the monster's appearance. He states that Manbearpig "is half man, half bear, and half pig" (South Park). This pokes fun at the typical monster in literature. The impossible ratio of man, bear, and pig shows how monsters can be considered scary regardless of how ridiculous they may actually be when analyzed literally. While Manbearpig is not necessarily intended to be scary to the audience of South Park, it is intended to be scary to the students by Al Gore. In fact, the attributes of Manbearpig are similar to those of many different monsters throughout literature. Manbearpig is a creature that is a mixture of man and animal. This is a characteristic attributable to many monsters in literature. For example, the werewolf addresses this same fear about crossing line between man and animal. Man–animal Strauss 2 hybrid monsters are scary because they can have the intellect of man but an animalistic nature. They are also unnatural and present the question of where they originated. Additionally, man–animal hybrid monsters are scary because they imply that a human can become part animal. This is, it may be possible, either willingly or unwillingly, to become a man–animal hybrid. Drugs aren't just bad for some people, they are bad for everyone. Vidal states "Label each drug with a precise description of what effect–good or bad– the drug will have on whoever takes it." It doesn't matter how sane you are, anyone could become a drug addict. Everyone hits their low spot in life and sometimes the best people fall through and turn to something, and that something could be drugs. Yes, there will be the ones who always become addicts, but it can be prevented. If drugs were legalized, it will forever affect the world. It will not only affect people now but people in the future. Vidal talks about the war on drugs and government at the end of his essay. He states that "nothing sensible will be done" and it will only get "worse". What would only get worse is if drugs were actually legalized and people began to use them more and more. If the government keeps fighting the war against drugs, a better solution will come up to end drug use and drug addiction. Eventually drugs could be belittled. The ability of humans to thrive even in the harshest conditions through the power of their minds has come to be their hallmark. Today, mankind has to conquer perhaps its greatest foe yet: global warming. A Crisis Of Character By Jody Williams A Crisis of Character American political activist Jody Williams once said "There's a mythology that if you want to change the world, you have to be sainted like Mother Teresa or Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But ordinary people with lives that go up and down and around in circles can still contribute to change." In an excerpt from his essay "Why Bother?" published in the New York Times Magazine, American public intellectual Michael Pollan reveals his goal to convince ordinary American citizens that they are capable of changing their behavior in order to reduce America's carbon footprint. Through the use of the four rhetorical elements situation, purpose, claim, and audience, Pollan aspires to have his readers gain a greater understanding that the environmental crisis is "at heart a crisis of character" (Pollan 766). However, although Pollan targets the correct audience to carry out his purpose, he fails to provide proper evidence to support his claim that individual contribution matters. Pollan states that the situation that first motivated him to write about his distress over the state of the environment came from a televised lecture made by American politician and environmentalist Al Gore, entitled An Inconvenient Truth. The documentary was intended to raise awareness about the dangers of global warming and encourage people to take appropriate action to successfully reverse climate change. In order to come across an audience who have lost a sense of ethical conduct, Al Gore, the star of An Inconvenient Truth, produced by Davis Guggenheim, formulates a thorough presentation that exposes the foreboding threat of global warming, proclaiming that humanity's only hope in resolving this worldwide issue will result from selfless, human action. Gore's original claim, that moral and ethical reasons drive him towards raising awareness of global warming, aligns with his heavy reliance on ethos from visual representation to persuade the audience. However, Gore's ongoing references to his past history and recent success challenges the notion that he finds inspiration from moral and ethical reasons alone, but rather indicates Gore's underlying motivation to use pathos and gain validity from the audience in order to make up for his past failure as a politician. During many occasions throughout the documentary, Gore provides insight of his past experiences, showing real news broadcasts that outline his presidency and even referencing directly to the audience, such as jokingly claiming, "I 'm Al Gore, I used to be the next president of the United States of America", and following up the audience's laughter by humorously adding, "I don 't find that particularly funny" as the first impression he has on the viewers (Inconvenient). Examples Of Drug Legalization By Gore Vidal Drug Legalization Drug abuse has progressively, over the last thirty years, become a tool for crime organizations and bureaucracies, independent and under the control of the federal government, used to transform drug addiction into a profit through the passage of countless laws against drug abuse. Gore Vidal's assertive essay communicated his belief that drug addiction should be legalized in order to ensure the eventual well–being and individual freedom guaranteed to Americans by the constitution. When drugs were made illegal, freedom of choice for Americans was chiseled away by the hard– hammering central government. In his fifth paragraph, Vidal stated that it seems most unlikely that any sane person will become a drug addict if he knows what drug addiction is like. Many whole–heartedly agree with this statement because they are active advocates of natural selection that applies greatly to drug abuse, provided the user is not mentally ill. Vidal ended his assertion of the popular issues by stating that people will always become drug addicts, as people will always become alcoholics and forbidding people the things they like will make them want it even more. This is absolutely true because Americans are most definitely taken aback and angered when their freedoms are suddenly made punishable by the interference of governmental bureaucracy. It is, in my mind, eminently disconcerting to even attempt to perceive why the government could not look back at the initial reasons for the foundation of our "free country" and realize what happens when individual liberties are taken away by an oppressive, outside force and conclude that those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. When the government refuses or disagrees with this statement, I believe that they are overlooking the fact that our meager two hundred years of existence as a liberated and free country is after all a very minute frame of reference in the greater scheme of human life. He gave a speech over global warming in 2004. One of the first points Al Gore makes in his speech is that evidence of global warming can be seen everywhere. He says "if you look at glaciers around the world, you see that, many are melting away." He then provides facts to show possible effects that could happen in the future. Al Gore explains that "ninety–five percent" of fresh water is "locked up" as ice in the Antarctic.
