We Should Invest Our Tax Dollars Essay
INTRODUCTION
I grew up in South Akron, and graduated from Garfield High school. This high school has meant a lot to the community and the students that attended
it. This is not just a building, but an institution that has turned out a lot of great minds and professional athletes. Losing the high school in this district
would be devastating. I feel that we should invest our tax dollars in our own city, and worry about the future of our own child, by keeping Akron
schools in the community of Akron.
Purpose
Garfield high along with Kenmore High school have been slotted to be torn down. There are no dates as of yet to when the projects will start. The
removal of these two public two public high schools would leave the entire southern portion of Akron and nearby Kenmore without a high school in or
near these districts.
Problem
Building the learning site in Kenmore would cause major busing problems. The city already owns the property of Garfield High school, so why go
out and spend money for property, when you have a property already available? Some people may disagree and say Kenmore is an excellent choice
property wise, and the land is readily available. I feel that we should invest our tax dollars in our own city, and worry about the future of our own
child, by keeping Akron schools in the community of Akron.
Scope

I attended a public school in my neighborhood, it was filled with mostly African Americans, wasn't very diverse. It was the last day of school
before summer started; I was in the 2nd grade. My teacher was calling us up to her desk one by one; she had our report card, along with a

My worldview and religious belief influence my practice as a leader every day. In my eyes the world is viewed as a workplace that prepares me for

19:5–6, KJV). The principle of the Bible is not stewardship, it is God's grace, love and mercy and the redemptive power of Jesus Christ.
Stewardship is discussed and is a biblical principle. My stewardship consists of me being a solider for my students and provides them protection

Throughout many cities, in specifically Los Angeles, five high schools were faced with discrimination. Lincoln, Garfield, Wilson, Belmont, Roosevelt
high schools was targeted in many racist ways. These high schools had restricted rules towards students. Majority of the student populations in these
schools were Latinxs. They faced problems that were not as necessary problematic. According to Jose Angel Gutierrez, "English was the only language
allowed spoken in the classroom and schoolyard. Severe punishment awaited the bold who uttered their native Spanish language within earshot of
school officials"(2). Students were forbidden to speak Spanish during school hours. Students were forbidden from using the bathroom, especially during
lunchtime. Students were denied to be taught their Mexican–American history. Students were mostly being led into the labor industry instead of going to

The 1960s. Many groups of people were being targeted by the dominant group of Caucasian people. Especially the Chicano community. The Chicano
community were treated unfairly and didn 't get the education that they needed. In order to get the necessary requirements that they needed to be
successful. They found the answer in the form of walkouts. The walkouts resulted in reforming the education system to better serve the Chicano
community. Not only did it reform the education system for Chicanos it set up the Chicano community for generations to come.
Life in the 1960s was a hard time if you weren 't a part of the dominate normativity. If you weren 't a well bodied christian male then you were
considered as other and were treated as such. From Africans American to Latinos to Women and everyone in between were considered as other and
were treated with disrespect and were giving less rights. The Latinos especially didn 't get the rights they deserved. They had the highest dropout rate in
high school, the lowest college attendance and they didn 't get the same attention as whites.[1] They also had the most unfair wages in the workplace.

Racism is in many sectors has been known for long to be negatively affecting people. In this, people who belong to the minority group are mostly
affected since they are sidelined in all courses of development. Like in other nations, East Los Angeles since late before 1967 has a school system that
had been affected with racism. In these schools, people who were mostly affected were the Mexican American community. In most cases, the Mexican
American community was seen not to have the abilities of doing well in education and therefore they were oppressed. The atmosphere of the school
systems according to the Mexican American students was hostile to them and required reforms in order to accommodate the needs of all the students
regardless of their characteristics. To the Mexican American students and Sal Castro, education system brought great inequality within the schools
since Mexican American students used poor facilities and their abilities were constantly underestimated.
With the oppressive conditions within the schools systems, the students felt that the system must be replaced with a system that is inclusive. Through

Student Reflection
Over the course of this semester, I have spent an ample amount of time serving as a mentor with Gonzaga's Center for Community Engagement Youth
Program, Campus Kids. In Campus Kids, we develop one–on–one relationships with mentees between the 4th–6th grades to assist them in succeeding
academically, socially, and emotionally. Every Thursday afternoon at 3:10 PM, each of the Campus Kids mentors in our group meet up in the Center
for Community Engagement in the basement of the Hemmingson Center. We spend this time doing icebreaker activities with the other mentors to get
to know each other while we wait for our mentees to arrive in their school bus from the local Garfield Elementary in Spokane, WA. From 3:30–5:00
PM, we spend one–on–one time with our mentees where we engage in a variety of different activities such as playing educational games, working on
homework together, sharing a healthy snack, talking about the activities we have done the past week, and exercising outside. In addition to meeting
with my mentee every Thursday, I also ride in a carpool with 3 other mentors to Garfield Elementary every Friday from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM for a
school visit where I get to sit in on my mentees' PE class and provide support and encouragement for him as he works on developing his physical
education. In this class, I help him out if he's having difficulty understanding what his teachers are asking him to do, or I will help count the number of

These Individuals were not just advocates and rebels (at the time they were seem as rebels) for standing up for their rights by demanding equal rights

Movie Stand And Deliver As An Excellent Teacher
I would rate Mr. Escalante as depicted in the movie Stand and Deliver as an excellent teacher! Ron Clark a renown and excellent teacher in his own
right, states there are 11 characteristics that should be found in every teacher who is raising children who love to learn. These characteristics included
enthusiasm, adventure, creativity, balance, compassionate, fun, common sense, appreciation, resilience and accountable. I observed every one of these
characteristics in the character of Mr. Escalante in the movie Stand and Deliver. In the beginning of the movie, as Mr. Escalante began this experience,
I do not believe he knew things were as bad as what he encountered on the first day of school. Classrooms with graffiti on the inside, insufficient chairs
for the number of students assigned in the classroom, high school students attending school without school supplies, students vandalizing their school
and defecating in the office, rigging the bell to completely disrupt the school day, even students inside the classroom without any desire to learn.
I would not be intimidated by Mr. Escalante's techniques. I have the utmost respect for teachers who are willing to go outside the norm to teach

  • 1. We Should Invest Our Tax Dollars Essay INTRODUCTION I grew up in South Akron, and graduated from Garfield High school. This high school has meant a lot to the community and the students that attended it. This is not just a building, but an institution that has turned out a lot of great minds and professional athletes. Losing the high school in this district would be devastating. I feel that we should invest our tax dollars in our own city, and worry about the future of our own child, by keeping Akron schools in the community of Akron. Purpose Garfield high along with Kenmore High school have been slotted to be torn down. There are no dates as of yet to when the projects will start. The removal of these two public two public high schools would leave the entire southern portion of Akron and nearby Kenmore without a high school in or near these districts. Problem Building the learning site in Kenmore would cause major busing problems. The city already owns the property of Garfield High school, so why go out and spend money for property, when you have a property already available? Some people may disagree and say Kenmore is an excellent choice property wise, and the land is readily available. I feel that we should invest our tax dollars in our own city, and worry about the future of our own child, by keeping Akron schools in the community of Akron.
