An Inside Look at Starbucks
INTRODUCTION Starbucks was established in 1971 and it is an established, successful purveyor
of Coffee. Starbucks is always known for its "rewarding coffeehouse" experience. In addition to
coffee they offer selection of Tazo teas, pastries and other snack items like Panini to please the taste
buds. For creating overall coffee house experience Starbucks stores have an appealing music and
décor. Their focus in United States is to create a gathering place where people can chat, sit work
much more just than a coffee place. Starbucks has a global presence over 17,000 stores all over the
world. Starbucks entered India in 2012 as a joint 50:50 venture with Tata Group. This paper focuses

And with the price structure they have it was very likely they would not have been able to connect
with masses in India. It would have probably catered only the upper class in India. 3. Innovative
Menu: Although Starbucks is a global chain and they have a standardized menu to enter the
emerging market they have made some innovative changes in menu. To cater the needs of merging
markets company has to modify its offering so it can successfully create the mindshare. Indian
people are conditioned to very different taste than the western culture when it comes to food.
Starbucks have introduces chicken tikka Panini, paneer roles and large variety of tea options which
will fulfill the demands of Indian customers. The food is catered by Taj catering and Taj hotel chain
( Tata chain). They have made changes in the size of the glasses as well and food portions as well.
This is due to the simple fact that Indian consumers due not consume large amount of beverages as
Americans or Europians do. Food portions are suitable to price and consumer habits. 4. Innovative
Hybrid Supply Chain: This combination becomes powerful to capture the market because they have
implemented novel supply chain strategy. Starbucks is known to create the experience but supply
chain is difficult in India. So most of the coffee comes from coffee estates in Sothern part of India
especially Karnataka and Tamilnadu region. It is known as "Indian Espresso Roast". This

Caffeine In The United States
Caffeine Research Paper
Caffeine is consumed in abundance worldwide and is extremely prevalent in today's society. The
average adult in the United States consumes around 300mg of coffee a day, making it clear that
caffeine is an important part of many people's lifestyles (Somogyi 1). Almost all of the caffeine that
is consumed is in beverages with coffee as the primary source of caffeine in the U.S. (Somogyi 4).
Approximately 75% of adults in the United States consume coffee and 58% consume coffee every
day (CDBCNet). Chocolate, tea, and some soft drinks also contain caffeine, but generally not as
much as coffee (Somogyi 4). Coffee shops are scattered throughout the world, from small local
shops to giant chains. With 20,000 coffee shops in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people feel as though they need caffeine because they are caught in a cycle where their sleep
patterns have been disrupted by caffeine so they feel more tired during the day and drink more
caffeine to stay awake (Mayo Foundation). However, in order for something to be classified as
addictive, it must cause an individual to seek out the substance despite the threat it poses to social,
physical, and economic well–being, criteria for which caffeine does not satisfy (IFICF 8). Heavy
caffeine users can experience mild withdrawal symptoms like headaches, low energy, irritability,
and nervousness. These symptoms are very short term and can be easily avoided by a gradual
decrease in caffeine consumption (Mayo Foundation). Research has also indicated that people build
up a tolerance to caffeine in as little as one to four days due to the brain producing more adenosine
receptors (Caffeine Informer). Even though individuals who consume caffeine experience minor
withdrawal and build up a tolerance, caffeine does not have the addictive properties that are often
associated with these

Compare and Contrast for the History of the World in Six...
AP World History Summer Reading Essay Only one thing matters more than a liquid refreshment,
getting a fresh breath of air. But liquids, unlike air, are more than just necessities for life. A simple
drink that was used just to quench a thirst had the possibilities of being a political stimulant,
economic sparker, and a cultural infuser. Tom Standage decides to magnify the microscopic drops of
history that had seemed to slip our minds so easily as just a thirst quencher. Whenever someone
picks up a nice cold glass of one of these drinks, they should know the history of it. These drinks
seemed to have done more than refresh us, they have served as economic sparkers and signatures for
countries. What have these drinks done alike to have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beer, for example, was a drink that affected the lifestyle of humans; the humans who had made the
switch between being nomads to building more permanent homes. Coke, on the other hand, had
made its mark on the American culture and then had spread itself to other cultures all around the
world. Coffee had formed a new type of franchise, coffee houses, an internet hub; coffee houses had
even become a staple in some people's daily lives. It's the differences in each drink that can
determine the way they affect our culture. Beer, the first beverage appeared as a result of changed
lifestyle for the early humans. Before, humans were nomads, who would follow their food (pg. 9).
But starting about 12,000 years ago humans had picked up on a new lifestyle (pg. 9). These small
bands of about 30 people were now settling down in more permanent areas and had abandoned their
old ways of constantly traveling (pg. 9). This drastic turning point in human history seemed to
primarily come from one reason, the discovery of beer (pg.11). As beer was basically formed from
the gathering of barley and wheat, humans had to form some type of permanent residency, and
abandon their old nomadic lifestyle (pg.11). The Drink of reason, coffee, seems to not have changed
much culturally to this day, as when it is brought to the table over 250 years ago (pg. 170). Coffee
remains to be the drink over which people meet

A History Of The World In Six Glasses Analysis
Within the final six chapters of A History of the World in Six Glasses written by Tom Standage, the
role of coffee, tea, and Coca–Cola in modern history is discussed. Standage argues that each of the
beverages have their own role in the economics, politics, and social issues of the time period they
became popular. "Europe began to emerge from an alcoholic haze that had lasted for centuries"
(Standage, 136). In the 17th century alcohol became a less popular beverage, while coffee emerged
as the new popular beverage of the time. This was due to coffee's effect on the mind that inspired a
sense of clarity and conversation. This effect was completely different than the effects of alcohol on
the drinker. Standage argues that the emergence of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Industrial Revolution was "the rapid development of industry that occurred in Britain in the late
18th and 19th centuries, brought about by the introduction of machinery. It was characterized by the
use of steam power, the growth of factories, and the mass production of manufactured goods"
(Dictionary). His reasoning is that not only were workers given tea when working in factories and
mills, but also the demand for tea was very high. This huge industry in tea led to England
developing a huge market for porcelain. Britain's place in world power moved its way up. Proving
tea to have influenced the growth of European imperialism. Into the 20th century however, a new
beverage arose to popularity. This beverage was Coca–Cola, which was primarily popular in the
United States at first. The popularity of the beverage covered the rest of the world as America joined
World War II. Standage views Coca–Cola as a defining drink for 19th and 20th century America.
Coca–Cola first came to popularity because it was a non–alcoholic beverage during a time America
was in a Temperance movement. The beverage then began to rapidly effect the economy. For
example the entrepreneur, John Mathews, found more than 100 patents for every stage of making
and selling soda. Coca–Cola became a mass–produced commodity in America. It was not until
World War II that Coca–Cola was spread to the rest of the

Q1: In the Early 1980s, how did Howard Schultz view the possibilities for the emerging specialty
coffee market?
In the early 1980s Howard Schultz became interested in the specialized coffee market. He observed
that there were only a few small coffee shops around the united states that did not have marketing
budgets to expand or that they did not want to expand and were happy with only being a few shops.
Howard Schultz noticed that of the coffee shops that were their i.e. Peats coffee house and Starbucks

By their employees being happy the atmosphere was something the customers wanted to be a part of
and tell their friends about.
The second critical driver was their distribution channel, as they helped them to get the brand
awareness into different parts of America so people would be talking about their coffee. Creating a
new era of coffee drinkers, which drove the social coffee shop that makes Starbucks today. By
Schultz using rapid expansion to get the brand name out there and having people talking about his
coffee the business began to boom people became more aware of the brand Starbuck and from
friends and family's reviews felt confident in going to Starbucks to get there coffee and try the
experience for themselves.
Another critical driver was Schultz plan to have a particular retail experience built on premium
quality coffee, responsive service, and inviting ambience. By ensuring that every store had this
culture and values it meant that customers would feel as thought they were sitting in their local
Starbucks no matter what city they were in across the stores at it grew.
Schultz him self was a critical driver to the business he was clear about his mission to build a

Starbuck Coffee Corporation Stands Alone
There are many companies in the coffee industry, but there is nothing like Starbucks. Starbucks
Corporation is an international company of coffee founded in Seattle, Washington in 1971 by Jerry
Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker. Starbucks has taken a coffee bean and turned it into
beverages that people around the world crave. They are the leading competitor in the coffee
industry, and our well known for their quality and customer service. Starbucks has changed the
world with their products, their pricing, their customer service, and their expansion around the
world. Starbucks started in 1971 when the first store was open in Seattle's Pike Place Market. The
three friends, Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker got the idea from Alfred Peet, the man
who started Peet's Coffee. They were inspired by his success and wanted to start their own. The
store originally just sold coffee beans and coffee equipment. In 1982 a man named Howard Schultz
was hired as the director of retail operations and marketing. Schultz then traveled to Italy and saw
the popularity of espresso bars in Milan and decides that the store should be selling drinks and not
just beans and equipment. He then convinces the founder to test the coffee house concept and in
1984 the first Starbucks Latte was served. Howard then decides to start his own company called II
Giornale selling brewed coffee and espressos made from Starbucks coffee beans in 1986. Then in
1987 the owners sell Starbucks to Howard and

The décor of the stores included earth tones and overstuffed chairs, wood floors and cozy fireplaces
that created a home–like feel so that its patrons could linger and relax. La Marzocco machines were
put up which added to the distinct taste of the coffee and the Barista that operated the machines
stood as a unique attraction. The quasi–Italian lingo included in menu (drinks names and sizes) were
very catchy. Starbucks positioned itself as a brand/company offering a "lifestyle product". The
locations were carefully selected where areas with large numbers of wealthy and highly professional
workers ("Bobos") were targeted. 2. When Starbucks was rapidly expanding its store locations in
2006–2009 it made specific changes in order to facilitate that growth. What did Starbucks gain–and
give up–as a result of each change? Starbucks made operational changes to facilitate its rapid
expansion. First, it changed La Marzocco machines for Verismo models, which were automatic and
produced espresso quicker. This reduced the costs of training baristas and reduced the time of the
process, so customers were served more quickly. However, some customers argued that the new
machines produced lower quality coffee and the customer–barista relationship was lost. Other
operational change was coffee grinding. At the beginning, coffee was grounded throughout the day
for best tasting. In order to reduce time, Starbucks started shipping pre–ground coffee to its stores.

I. Company History
Three Seattle entrepreneurs started the Starbucks Corporation in 1971the name comes from Herman
Melville 's Moby Dick. Their prime product was the selling of whole bean coffee in one Seattle
store. By 1982, this business had grown tremendously into five stores selling the coffee beans, a
roasting facility, and a wholesale business for local restaurants. Howard Schultz, a marketer, was
recruited to be the manager of retail and marketing. He brought new ideas to the owners, but was
turned down. Schultz in turn opened his own coffee bar in 1986 based on Italian coffee cafes, selling
brewed Starbucks coffee. By 1987, Schultz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Starbucks has the distinction of being the public 's educator on Expresso. They have also recently
started to expand to packaged and prepared tea in response to the growing demand for this product.
There are no other national coffee bar competitors in the same scale as Starbucks. Starbucks is the
only competitor in the coffee bar market that has a recognized brand image. The difference between
Starbucks and other coffeehouses is that they own all their stores and do not franchise. Starbucks
stores operate in most metropolitan areas of the United States and also have a direct mail business to
serve customers in every state. They have introduced gourmet flavoured decaffeinated coffees as
well as specialty flavours and whole bean coffees for the faithful coffee drinkers. They have also
added light lunch fare to their menu. Starbucks had recently expanded its emphasis internationally.
There are opportunities waiting in possible joint ventures with other corporations to design new
product associations with Starbucks ' coffee.
Although Starbucks has enjoyed tremendous success in the past few years, there are a few obstacles
looming. Since the popularity of the coffee house idea has grown, some cities wish to issue
regulations on the coffeehouses due to complaints of late night patrons becoming uncontrollable.
The cost of coffee beans is expected to rise in the future due to lower supply, which may tighten the
margins on coffee merchants. The higher

Starbucks 's Marketing Strategy For Starbucks
This particular case starts off by telling the background of Starbucks as it is today. 30 years ago,
Starbucks was a single store in Seattle 's Pike Place Market selling premium roasted coffee. They
decided to change their traditional customer experience in the 1980s. When the company 's director
of marketing, Howard Schultz, came back from Italy, he felt enchanted with the coffee house
experience of Italy. Mr. Schultz wanted to duplicate this experience in his own coffee stores. The
new strategy consisted of selling their already proven products in a tastefully designed coffee house
setting. With this strategy, Starbucks became one of the best–known brands in the country in a
decade. There stores became places for relaxation, reading the newspaper, holding business
meetings, or even browsing the web. Nevertheless, Starbucks wanted to expand their market. Their
first target market was Japan. The company established a joint venture with a local retailer, Sazaby
Inc. This joint venture was divided in half between the two companies. In order to replicate the
experience without losing their competitive advantage, the Starbucks format was then licensed to the
venture. To ensure that the Starbucks experience in Japan was duplicated properly, Starbucks
actually transferred some of their employees to their Japanese operations. Many critics did not feel
that Starbucks was capable of duplicating their experience into foreign countries. However, by the
end of 2009, Starbucks had

Beer might have/had influenced the transition from hunting and gathering to agricultural–based
societies. One way beer could have done this was that after the discovery of beer, the demand for
beer began to increase. With increase demand for beer, farming would increase taking away time to
hunt and gather for food. With less hunting and gathering, farmers eventually settled down in small
areas around the Fertile Crescent to create beer. What does the story of beer tell you about social and

The better wine you drank, meant the more money you made to purchase the wine, thus creating
your caste in society. What effects does wine have on the development of Christianity and Islam?
The banning of wine in Islamic culture would be the basic start for the banning of many other foods.
The prophet Muhammad's ban on alcohol is said to have started from a fight between two men who
were under the influence. When Muhammad sought divine help from the one and only Allah, Allah's
reply was to ban alcohol so that such a thing could not happen again. As for wine, it had a different
story for the development of Christianity. Wine drinking was a tradition of Greeks and Romans.
When "barbarians" took over Rome and Greece, wine drinking seemed to have halted. But as time
went on, barbarians began to take up wine drinking again, sort of assimilating themselves into Greek
culture. Barbarians soon became civilized, all thanks to the tradition of wine drinking. "Spirits in the

rate. Additionally, we evaluated the industry with Porter's Five Forces and established our
competitive advantages between our competitors and new entrants. Based off of these facts, we
recommend that Biggby continues to use franchising because it allows the business to emerge

The Impact Of Coffeehouse Culture On The Development Of...
From the early sixteenth century to the Industrial Revolution, coffee–houses spread from the Middle
East throughout Europe and grew into important political, economic, and social institutions. This
paper will be about the role that coffeehouses played in developing and promoting these concepts
and compare the ways in which they gave rise to organizations such as the London Stock Exchange
and Lloyd's of London. This paper pays specific attention to the impact of coffeehouse culture on
the development of these concepts. Great Introduction.
English coffeehouses in the 17th and 18th centuries were public social places where [who?] would
meet for conversation and commerce while drinking coffee. For the price of a penny, customers
purchased a cup of coffee and admission. Travelers introduced coffee as a beverage to England
during the mid–17th century; previously it had been consumed mainly for its supposed medicinal
properties. The historian Brian Cowan describes English coffeehouses as "places where people
gathered to drink coffee, learn the news of the day, and perhaps to meet with other local residents
and discuss matters of mutual concern." (insert citation)
Coffeehouses also played an important role in the development of financial markets and

Essay on Kraft Foods: The Coffe Pod Launch, Case Topic
KRAFT FOODS: THE COFFEE POD LAUNCH
CASE TOPIC Geoff Herzog is the product manager for coffee development at Kraft Foods Canada.
After reviewing successful results of single–serve coffee pod systems, he wondered whether it
would be successful in other areas. It was July 6, 2004, and Herzog had just learned that Kraft Foods
North America was planning an aggressive launch of coffee pods in the United States. He then had
only a month to decide whether or not the company should proceed with a simultaneous launch in
Canada, or await the U.S. results.

Finally, the fifth objective was to build a leaner cost structure through better use of assets to generate
savings for reinvestment in brand building. It is important to note that Kraft Foods was the world
leader in coffee sales, with 15% of the global market. In Canada, Maxwell House and Nabob brands
combined to make up 32% of the market share. Nestle followed behind at 17% and Proctor &
Gamble with 9%. Private labels accounted for nearly 23% of the market. Smaller companies
accounted for the remaining 19% of the market. Maxwell House, which is a line of products by
Kraft, was Canada's top retail brand of roast and ground coffee. Nabob was second, but was the
leader in western Canada.
MARKET STRATEGY The target market for Kraft SSP in Canada was accessed by Herzog. He
found that it consisted of coffee lovers between the ages of 25 to 54. These individuals were well
educated, which in turn meant that they had a higher income. On average, the target market
consisted of adults who made $91,000 per year. Another interesting fact was that nearly 75% of this
target market was married. 88% lived in single–detached homes in urban areas. The urban areas
were population rich provinces of Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta. These areas were
characterized by high levels of consumption, and their interests included exercising, entertaining at

The Causes And Negative Effects Of Caffeine
Negative Effects of Caffeine
Drinking over 200 cups of coffee would kill an adult. Coffee has been important piece in many
people lives. It is that important that many homes have coffee or even instant coffee on the ready.
Coffee shops like Starbucks have been a growing business and is still getting more popular. Many
don't even know what kind of effects coffee has to the human body other than give energy. With that
lack of knowledge of people not knowing what it does to the human body, of the safety and concern
of its consumers, one must look at the history of caffeine, the negative effects of caffeine, and the
alternatives. The origin of caffeine was the origin of coffee without the knowledge of caffeine being
a key piece in the coffee plant. There was no specific date, but an Ethiopian legend that goat herder
found his goats eating this red fruit that gave them a lot of energy (Avey par. 2). The fruit, Arabica
was native to Ethiopia. The coffee fruit inherently has caffeine. The first recorded date of the coffee
plant was in 15th century where it was cultivated in a large scale in Yemen (Barksdale par. 2). The
Arabic coffee plant had moved from its native land to become a widely produced crop. Yemen was
occupied by the Ottomans around 15th century; they attempted to keep the coffee plant to
themselves to be the only sellers. Though the Ottomans attempted to keep this plant in Yemen,
Muslim pilgrims kept some with them when they journeyed to southern India. That plant

A History Of The World In 6 Glasses Summary
There are many things that shape the course of history. Powerful rulers, deadly diseases, and
influential religions are a few common examples of these. But, one group of influential commodities
to shape history that not many people consider is beverages. In particular, beer, wine, spirits, tea,
coffee, and cola are six that have significantly shaped the course of history. The nonfiction book, A
History of the World in 6 Glasses, written by Tom Standage, discusses the significance of these six
popular drinks in relation to human culture shaping around their existence. The first beverage that
Standage discusses in his book is Beer. Beer was probably first discovered when someone left oats

Spirits became very popular during the Age of Exploration because of their high alcohol content.
One could carry a lot more alcohol on a ship, and take up significantly less room. Spirits were also a
key player in the Slave Trade in the United States. Spirits could be traded for slaves, and therefore
was a huge contributor to the economy of the United States. The United States could never have
been the superpower it is today had it not been for the contribution of the Slave Trade and spirits to
our economy. However, when distillers in Newport began the production of rum with a higher
alcohol content, meant specifically for use as currency in the slave trade, the English, who had
previously provided spirits as made in the British sugar islands, became discontent with their new
competition. The English then imposed a high tax on molasses so that it was more expensive to
make rum in Newport. But, these new taxation laws were ignored completely. When the British did
nothing about this, it created a newfound resentment and disregard of the British. This tax law
influenced the fight for American

Kraft Foods, Inc.
Case Topic, Setting, and Perspective Kraft Foods, Inc. pursued an aggressive launch of coffee pods
in the United States, but had less than a month to decide whether Kraft should proceed with a
similar launch in Canada, or await the U.S. results. However, a Canadian launch withholds several
decisions. A suitable branding strategy is necessary, wholesale and suggested retail price for coffee
pods, choose which flavors to offer, and decide whether Kraft should use traditional distribution
channels or direct–to–store (DSD). Also, the development of an effective advertising and promotion
strategy on a relatively limited budget is necessary. From a consultant perspective, Kraft has chosen
to pursue the Canadian market. Kraft has chosen a Canadian test market because a test market
assumes less risk, less cost, and insightful information regarding the purchase of coffee pods in a
foreign country. History and background Kraft is an innovative company that started over 100 years
ago, in 1903, by a man named James Lewis Kraft. This man decided to get into the cheese business
and purchased wholesale cheese. He then began selling this cheese to small stores in Chicago,
Illinois. With the help of his brothers, the business grew exponentially and they eventually began
manufacturing their own cheese. With its continued expansion and growth, Kraft quickly became a
common household name, and by 1926 sales were $36 million. Over the years Kraft expanded its

Social capital is defined as "the networks of relationships among people who live and work in a

in a functioning society because communicating with people is how ideas are shared, trust is built,

Coffee houses were popular in Italy and other European countries and later in the United States.
In India, which is a predominantly tea consuming country, the habit of drinking coffee earlier was
confined to the wealthy visitors of five star coffee houses, the intellectuals and by the traditional
South Indian families. In the neighbouring South East Asian countries, coffee houses had begun to
become popular. These cafés had also begun to promote the web culture and offered Internet access.
The trends in the cafe space inspired Siddhartha and he realized that they could potentially build a
popular experiential coffee brand for the Indian market. Cafe Coffee Day came into existence
combining the coffee experience with Internet

Coffee rust disease is the greatest threat to the coffee...
Coffee rust disease is the greatest threat to the coffee industry worldwide and has the potential to
improve or hurt Brazil's economy while having a significant impact on the United States. Coffee is
second only to petroleum for exports in developing countries. Over 500 billion cups of coffee are
consumed globally each year. The worldwide coffee supply comes primarily from Central and South
America accounting for 67 percent of production (Goldschein, 2011). Coffee rust disease is a wind–
borne fungus that spreads quickly. Once infected, crop yields are significantly reduced (Arneson,
2000). In their annual reports from recent years, Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts both list increases in
coffee commodity prices and shortages due to increased ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the coffee industry in Brazil grew so did the infrastructure of the country. By the 1900's coffee
made up 70 percent of exports from Brazil. The increased productivity led to an excess in the market
that coupled with diminished demand caused a Brazilian depression and created discontent with the
current political system that led to dictatorship control (E, 2008) (The Library of Congress, 2010).
With the emergence of a more democratic political system and deregulation other crops developed
as important exports. This was further encouraged by the government due to a need to have a more
diversified economy (The Library of Congress, 2010). Even with shifting production to other crops
Brazil remains an important part of the world's coffee supply as shown in figure 1.
Figure 1 Worldwide Coffee Exports November 2013 (Statista, 2014)
The coffee grown in Vietnam is Robusta leaving Brazil and Columbia as the two largest sources of
Arabica. Brazil has the largest market share of all coffee production and the largest share of Arabica
production. Arabica coffee plants are more susceptible to coffee rust disease (International Coffee
Organization). In 1869 an outbreak occurred in Ceylon, present day Sri Lanka. This outbreak
affected 90 percent of their crops and shifted their production to tea. Britain, a major coffee importer
and grower in Ceylon at the time, shifted their

And with the price structure they have it was very likely they would not have been able to connect with masses in India. It would have probably catered only the upper class in India. 3. Innovative Menu: Although Starbucks is a global chain and they have a standardized menu to enter the emerging market they have made some innovative changes in menu. To cater the needs of merging markets company has to modify its offering so it can successfully create the mindshare. Indian people are conditioned to very different taste than the western culture when it comes to food. Starbucks have introduces chicken tikka Panini, paneer roles and large variety of tea options which will fulfill the demands of Indian customers. The food is catered by Taj catering and Taj hotel chain ( Tata chain). They have made changes in the size of the glasses as well and food portions as well. This is due to the simple fact that Indian consumers due not consume large amount of beverages as Americans or Europians do. Food portions are suitable to price and consumer habits. 4. Innovative Hybrid Supply Chain: This combination becomes powerful to capture the market because they have implemented novel supply chain strategy. Starbucks is known to create the experience but supply chain is difficult in India. So most of the coffee comes from coffee estates in Sothern part of India especially Karnataka and Tamilnadu region. The average adult in the United States consumes around 300mg of coffee a day, making it clear that caffeine is an important part of many people's lifestyles (Somogyi 1). Almost all of the caffeine that is consumed is in beverages with coffee as the primary source of caffeine in the U.S. (Somogyi 4). Approximately 75% of adults in the United States consume coffee and 58% consume coffee every day (CDBCNet). Chocolate, tea, and some soft drinks also contain caffeine, but generally not as much as coffee (Somogyi 4). Coffee shops are scattered throughout the world, from small local shops to giant chains. Many people feel as though they need caffeine because they are caught in a cycle where their sleep patterns have been disrupted by caffeine so they feel more tired during the day and drink more caffeine to stay awake (Mayo Foundation). However, in order for something to be classified as addictive, it must cause an individual to seek out the substance despite the threat it poses to social, physical, and economic well–being, criteria for which caffeine does not satisfy (IFICF 8). Heavy caffeine users can experience mild withdrawal symptoms like headaches, low energy, irritability, and nervousness. These symptoms are very short term and can be easily avoided by a gradual decrease in caffeine consumption (Mayo Foundation). Research has also indicated that people build up a tolerance to caffeine in as little as one to four days due to the brain producing more adenosine receptors (Caffeine Informer). Even though individuals who consume caffeine experience minor withdrawal and build up a tolerance, caffeine does not have the addictive properties that are often associated with these ... But liquids, unlike air, are more than just necessities for life. A simple drink that was used just to quench a thirst had the possibilities of being a political stimulant, economic sparker, and a cultural infuser. Tom Standage decides to magnify the microscopic drops of history that had seemed to slip our minds so easily as just a thirst quencher. Whenever someone picks up a nice cold glass of one of these drinks, they should know the history of it. These drinks seemed to have done more than refresh us, they have served as economic sparkers and signatures for countries. What have these drinks done alike to have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beer, for example, was a drink that affected the lifestyle of humans; the humans who had made the switch between being nomads to building more permanent homes. Coke, on the other hand, had made its mark on the American culture and then had spread itself to other cultures all around the world. Coffee had formed a new type of franchise, coffee houses, an internet hub; coffee houses had even become a staple in some people's daily lives. It's the differences in each drink that can determine the way they affect our culture. Beer, the first beverage appeared as a result of changed lifestyle for the early humans. Before, humans were nomads, who would follow their food (pg. 9). But starting about 12,000 years ago humans had picked up on a new lifestyle (pg. 9). These small bands of about 30 people were now settling down in more permanent areas and had abandoned their old ways of constantly traveling (pg. 9). This drastic turning point in human history seemed to primarily come from one reason, the discovery of beer (pg.11). As beer was basically formed from the gathering of barley and wheat, humans had to form some type of permanent residency, and abandon their old nomadic lifestyle (pg.11). The Drink of reason, coffee, seems to not have changed much culturally to this day, as when it is brought to the table over 250 years ago (pg. 170). A History Of The World In Six Glasses Analysis Within the final six chapters of A History of the World in Six Glasses written by Tom Standage, the role of coffee, tea, and Coca–Cola in modern history is discussed. Standage argues that each of the beverages have their own role in the economics, politics, and social issues of the time period they became popular. "Europe began to emerge from an alcoholic haze that had lasted for centuries" (Standage, 136). In the 17th century alcohol became a less popular beverage, while coffee emerged as the new popular beverage of the time. This was due to coffee's effect on the mind that inspired a sense of clarity and conversation. This effect was completely different than the effects of alcohol on the drinker. Standage argues that the emergence of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Industrial Revolution was "the rapid development of industry that occurred in Britain in the late 18th and 19th centuries, brought about by the introduction of machinery. It was characterized by the use of steam power, the growth of factories, and the mass production of manufactured goods" (Dictionary). His reasoning is that not only were workers given tea when working in factories and mills, but also the demand for tea was very high. This huge industry in tea led to England developing a huge market for porcelain. Britain's place in world power moved its way up. Proving tea to have influenced the growth of European imperialism. Into the 20th century however, a new beverage arose to popularity. This beverage was Coca–Cola, which was primarily popular in the United States at first. The popularity of the beverage covered the rest of the world as America joined World War II. Standage views Coca–Cola as a defining drink for 19th and 20th century America. Coca–Cola first came to popularity because it was a non–alcoholic beverage during a time America was in a Temperance movement. The beverage then began to rapidly effect the economy. For example the entrepreneur, John Mathews, found more than 100 patents for every stage of making and selling soda. Coca–Cola became a mass–produced commodity in America. Starbucks Corporation is an international company of coffee founded in Seattle, Washington in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker. Starbucks has taken a coffee bean and turned it into beverages that people around the world crave. They are the leading competitor in the coffee industry, and our well known for their quality and customer service. Starbucks has changed the world with their products, their pricing, their customer service, and their expansion around the world. Starbucks started in 1971 when the first store was open in Seattle's Pike Place Market. The three friends, Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker got the idea from Alfred Peet, the man who started Peet's Coffee. They were inspired by his success and wanted to start their own. The store originally just sold coffee beans and coffee equipment. In 1982 a man named Howard Schultz was hired as the director of retail operations and marketing. Schultz then traveled to Italy and saw the popularity of espresso bars in Milan and decides that the store should be selling drinks and not just beans and equipment. He then convinces the founder to test the coffee house concept and in 1984 the first Starbucks Latte was served. Howard then decides to start his own company called II Giornale selling brewed coffee and espressos made from Starbucks coffee beans in 1986. Then in 1987 the owners sell Starbucks to Howard and ... The quasi–Italian lingo included in menu (drinks names and sizes) were very catchy. Starbucks positioned itself as a brand/company offering a "lifestyle product". When Starbucks was rapidly expanding its store locations in 2006–2009 it made specific changes in order to facilitate that growth. What did Starbucks gain–and give up–as a result of each change? Starbucks made operational changes to facilitate its rapid expansion. First, it changed La Marzocco machines for Verismo models, which were automatic and produced espresso quicker. This reduced the costs of training baristas and reduced the time of the process, so customers were served more quickly. However, some customers argued that the new machines produced lower quality coffee and the customer–barista relationship was lost. Other operational change was coffee grinding. At the beginning, coffee was grounded throughout the day for best tasting. In order to reduce time, Starbucks started shipping pre–ground coffee to its stores. However coffee quality could ... Howard Schultz, a marketer, was recruited to be the manager of retail and marketing. He brought new ideas to the owners, but was turned down. The difference between Starbucks and other coffeehouses is that they own all their stores and do not franchise. Starbucks stores operate in most metropolitan areas of the United States and also have a direct mail business to serve customers in every state. They have introduced gourmet flavoured decaffeinated coffees as well as specialty flavours and whole bean coffees for the faithful coffee drinkers. They have also added light lunch fare to their menu. Starbucks had recently expanded its emphasis internationally. There are opportunities waiting in possible joint ventures with other corporations to design new product associations with Starbucks ' coffee. Although Starbucks has enjoyed tremendous success in the past few years, there are a few obstacles looming. Since the popularity of the coffee house idea has grown, some cities wish to issue regulations on the coffeehouses due to complaints of late night patrons becoming uncontrollable. • 21. Starbucks 's Marketing Strategy For Starbucks This particular case starts off by telling the background of Starbucks as it is today. 30 years ago, Starbucks was a single store in Seattle 's Pike Place Market selling premium roasted coffee. They decided to change their traditional customer experience in the 1980s. When the company 's director of marketing, Howard Schultz, came back from Italy, he felt enchanted with the coffee house experience of Italy. Mr. Schultz wanted to duplicate this experience in his own coffee stores. The new strategy consisted of selling their already proven products in a tastefully designed coffee house setting. With this strategy, Starbucks became one of the best–known brands in the country in a decade. There stores became places for relaxation, reading the newspaper, holding business meetings, or even browsing the web. Nevertheless, Starbucks wanted to expand their market. Their first target market was Japan. The company established a joint venture with a local retailer, Sazaby Inc. This joint venture was divided in half between the two companies. In order to replicate the experience without losing their competitive advantage, the Starbucks format was then licensed to the venture. To ensure that the Starbucks experience in Japan was duplicated properly, Starbucks actually transferred some of their employees to their Japanese operations. Many critics did not feel that Starbucks was capable of duplicating their experience into foreign countries. However, by the end of 2009, Starbucks had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The banning of wine in Islamic culture would be the basic start for the banning of many other foods. The prophet Muhammad's ban on alcohol is said to have started from a fight between two men who were under the influence. When Muhammad sought divine help from the one and only Allah, Allah's reply was to ban alcohol so that such a thing could not happen again. As for wine, it had a different story for the development of Christianity. Wine drinking was a tradition of Greeks and Romans. When "barbarians" took over Rome and Greece, wine drinking seemed to have halted. But as time went on, barbarians began to take up wine drinking again, sort of assimilating themselves into Greek culture. Barbarians soon became civilized, all thanks to the tradition of wine drinking. "Spirits in the Colonial Period" (Chapters 5 and 6) How did spirits advance/accelerated colonialism? English coffeehouses in the 17th and 18th centuries were public social places where [who?] would meet for conversation and commerce while drinking coffee. For the price of a penny, customers purchased a cup of coffee and admission. Travelers introduced coffee as a beverage to England during the mid–17th century; previously it had been consumed mainly for its supposed medicinal properties. The historian Brian Cowan describes English coffeehouses as "places where people gathered to drink coffee, learn the news of the day, and perhaps to meet with other local residents and discuss matters of mutual concern." (insert citation) Coffeehouses also played an important role in the development of financial markets and newspapers.
