People’S Beliefs On How Individuals Become Leaders Affect
People's beliefs on how individuals become leaders affect the way they evaluate leadership
potentials. If people believe that leaders are born, it is likely to result in selecting or identifying the
right people for leadership positions rather than developing the leaders. Leadership refers to the
exercise of influence over others on behalf of a specific purpose, goals, and aims of the leaders.
Some leadership theories such as Trait theory and Great Man theory believe that individuals inherit
some traits and qualities that make them suited for leadership (Lussier & Achua, 2015). However
Gentry, Deal, Stawiski & Ruderman (2012) believes that a good leader is developed through
constant growth, mentoring, experience, and learning. Such leaders ... Show more content on

Additionally, leaders need to be smart to evaluate situations and come up with courses of action.
This makes social intelligence an important leadership trait. An aspect of empathy and ability to
understand followers is important to leaders. These traits are believed to be natural within an
individual.
However, differentiating between leadership emergence and effectiveness is important in
understanding the issue of inborn leadership traits (Gentry, Deal, Stawiski & Ruderman, 2012).
Leadership effectiveness refers to the performance of the leader while emergence refers to being
valved into a leadership role. In many cases, inborn leadership traits are associated with the
emergence of leadership. Meaning that within a group of peers, those who are more intelligent or are
more extraverted tend to have a better influence on a group. However, this does not mean that these
individuals perform better than others when placed in a formal leadership position.
Most studies investigating the relationship between leadership and extraversion have found a weak
relationship, making it difficult to draw conclusions from such positions. However, some studies
have indicated a strong relationship when looking at specific job types. In this case, extraversion
predicts that performance in jobs with the competitive social element such as sales. On the other
hand, extraversion would predict other less desirable outcomes such as absenteeism. Further, when

Identify and Share Your Leadership Story

November 19, 2017 Abstract
This paper adds insight to whether leaders are born or made. In this paper you will find my beliefs
on this topic, as well as my personal leadership story. The meaning of leadership is varied based on
individual viewpoints and experiences. Many characteristics of a leader can be said to be based on
behavior, influence and one's interpersonal skills (Yukl, 2006).
Are Leaders Born or Made?
"Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or
organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations" ("Leadership",
n.d.). Survey ten (10) people on their definition of a great leader and you will most likely receive ten
(10) different definitions. How leaders come about can be argued several different ways. 361 C–
level executives (those at the top of organizations) were asked whether they thought leaders were
born or made. While 28.5% believed that they are both born and made, 19.1% believed they are
born, and 52.4% believed they are made (Gentry, Deal, and Stawiski, 2016).
Leaders are Born
One may be able to argue that a leader can only be born. Born leaders have the charisma which
cannot be taught or learned. They are natural inspirers, and can often be given a task and can
develop a team around it. Born leaders can take this team and have everyone on board and believing

Introduction
Leadership continues to be one of the most debated and studied topics in management and indeed
society as a whole. This can be evidenced by the fact that if you search for leadership on Goggle
175,000,000 worldwide hits are recorded. Success in many arenas, whether it be business, the
military, politics or the wider community is often primarily attributed to good leadership. Equally,
organisational failure or under–performance is just as readily attributed to poor leadership.
Leadership has been the subject of intense interest and debate for over two and a half millennia,
from Plato ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thirdly the two schools of thought dismiss the leader follower relationship, portraying a very one
way relationship where followers have little to no impact on leaders. While such a model may have
some relevance in a highly centralised command and control organisation in the public and
voluntary sector (The NHS in particular) as well as LEAN organisations such as Toyota the leader
follower relationship is much more complicated.
Most importantly, however "Great Man" and Trait theorists ignore the situation and context that the
leader is operating in. As Stoghill 1948 argues it is difficult to isolate a set of traits and
characteristics of leaders without factoring in the situational effects.
Importantly too, much of the research on traits is not directed at understanding the impact leaders
have on outcomes or on those they lead. Hence while the research looks at traits that may be
important in leader emergence the research tends not to explore the relationship between leadership
traits and employee productivity or employee satisfaction.
A significant criticism of the schools is that they romanticize the great leader presenting both a one
sided portrayal of leadership as well as often conveniently glossing over their failings of

2.3.2 Hersey and Blanchard's Model
This model of leadership requires the leader to identify the demands of the situation and then choose
and implement the appropriate leadership response. The theory also lays emphasis on the readiness
of the followers and their reaction to a specific task.
It also asserts that an effective leader assess the changing situations , and guages the readiness of the
followers to the same and implements necessary changes in the pattern of leadership , in order to
accommodate the change.

Leadership As A Theory Of Leadership
Literature Review
The first research on leadership in 1910 gave rise to the notion those there certain individuals that
have traits that they are born with that make them great leaders. That is natural born leaders as other
are not born with such traits, however; much research followed to verify the 1910 conclusion. Max
Weber identified charismatic leadership as a theory on leadership that was new and emerging, As per
Max, charisma is a personal magnetism or charge in the sense that leaders are those that can attract
others to them. While other concluded that leaders are not born, they are made (Malphurs, 2003).

It is about speaking softly but carrying a big stick and it is obvious that what you cannot separate are
leadership and learning. It is about learning to the condition in the sense that one can reveal a
glorious and power inner self. Many people hold the truth that leaders are born to lead, and this is a
notion made by a mysterious confluence of events or both de (Vries & Engellau, 2004).
Personal view of the literature
Research conclusively indicates that effective leadership is much more on specific principles that get
easily followed by anyone and leaders that are effective depend less and less on an innate trait. Such
research has prompted a lot of excitement in the sense that people can easily share the views of their
purpose. However, there are many with their opinion on the matter (Gardner & Laskin, 2011).
In history, we have seen the great leader, and one of them is General Hoyts. He and Vanderberg were
one of the most dominant military commanders. He becomes the U.S Air force's second chief of
staff. General Vandenberg was not a natural leader this is per Commandant Cadets at West Point. In
fact, there was one time he almost being dismissed from the Academy for his lack of leadership

Leadership As A Leader And Gaining Leadership Qualities
As a result of living in a society that puts a great deal of importance on becoming a leader and
gaining leadership qualities, work places and organisations have now resulted in investing large
sums in sponsoring employees take part in leadership programs and training courses. The term
leadership is broad and open to interpretation. Peters and Waterman (1982, P. 79) define leadership
as "meticulously shifting the attention of the institutions through the mundane language of
management systems. It is altering agendas so that new agendas get attention. It is being visible
when things go awry and invisible when they are working well. It is building a loyal team that

There are many theories that contribute to the discussion of leadership some of which are: Trait,
Behavioural, Contingency, Relational theory and the Style theory. The contingency theory claims
that there is no set way to lead an organisation. This is due to the fact that both external and internal
factors need to be considered by the leader and need to be handled accordingly. The Relational
theory looks into how relations within an organisation develop leaders and at how leaders are
required to be accustomed to others within the organisation. The Style theory of leadership proposes
that they style of leadership is the key to good leadership. It looks at leaders and their style of
leadership for example Steve Jobs would lead in a very autocratic manner whereas Richard Branson
is seen to be a democratic leader. The managerial grid is also part of the style based theory; it allows
people to embrace a leadership style that is both people friendly and achieve target production.
However this theory has been criticised of being too simplistic as different people would prefer to be
lead in different ways. Having said this there are two main theories that have become the result of
this debate: behavioural and trait. The trait theory believes that people are born with leadership
characteristics such as imagination, determination and enthusiasm. The analysis of mental, physical
and social attributes of leaders resulted in the trait theory being developed. Whereas the behavioural

Characteristics Of A Great Leader
To be a great leader one must have many attributes or qualities. Some of the most important are
flexibility, communication, courage, humility, and responsibility. A great leader must be flexible as
being a leader usually consists of dealing with new challenges all the time, especially in the
technological age. Communication consists of effectively conveying expectations and understanding
how people will interpret the leader's directions. A great leader must have the courage to see the path
that the group must take to complete the goal regardless of the consequences. When a great leader
does not correctly handle a situation he or she must have the humility to admit that he or she was
wrong. Also, this leader must be responsible for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Part of the reason that the idea of great leaders being born is appealing is that a great leader is so
hard to define. It can be discussed what great leaders do and how they act. Sometimes all we are
good at though is identifying who a great leader is outside of ourselves. It is difficult to answer the
question "Why aren't you a great leader?". The initial reaction would most commonly be that you
just aren't. It seems that you weren't meant to be. With that the idea that great leaders are born to be
that way seems appealing. If we look at history many great leaders came seemingly out of nowhere.
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln did not need to attend leadership seminars to lead the
nation. With all that is done for leadership nowadays and the mixed results, it seems that there is
something intrinsic that great leaders have. Many companies focus their efforts on trying to develop
leaders from within the company to fill critical roles. Many times though there is a leadership talent
gap from where the company would like the given leader to be and where he or she actually is. A lot
of what is attributed to a leader begin great is luck. To be truly great the leader usually is presented
with a monumental opportunity to lead in the face of adversity. The leader is lucky to have come
upon this situation and be given the chance to rise to the occasion. By capitalizing on this lucky
situation the

Why Is It Important To Say That Leaders Are Born Not Made
"Leaders are Born, Not Made" Discuss.
Introduction
Whether leaders are born and not made is a discussion that has been debated for centuries and yet it
still divides opinion today. Like many, on receiving this assignment my instinctive gut response was
that they are! However, over the course of my exploration into the subject matter and in greater
reflection of my own personal experiences, my contention is now similar to that of the famous and
successful American football coach Vince Lombardi who said "Leaders are not born, they're made.
They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is
worthwhile"
This sentiment will form the basis of my argument and my position on the topic. ... Show more

They just seemed to have the 'leadership' x factor within them. They were the leaders we all grew up
with, and at an age that was impossible for them to have received any formalised training or
development.
Another angle to discuss is personality and the very plausible belief that we are born predisposed to
certain personality traits. If this holds true then surely certain personality types are better suited to
positions of leadership. Therefore. an introvert is unlikely to feel comfortable leading, commanding
and being followed, nor are they likely to possess the necessary communication and influencing
skills required to garner support and followers.
A person born with a lack of confidence is also unlikely to ever seek out leadership or be
comfortable if it is thrust upon them. Desire, another personality trait, in my opinion is also a very
important quality in that it essential prerequisite trait that must be possessed by those that go on to
become great leaders. Those that do not have the necessary desire to succeed – rarely do.
Leaders are Made – The evidence
The root of my position stems from another debate. A discussion which, in many ways, runs in
parallel with this one – the discussion of 'nature vs. nurture', on this topic I passionately sit on the
side of 'nurture' and therefore would feel somewhat hypocritical if I were to advocate the notion that
'leaders are born!'
My support of 'nurture' is based on personal circumstances. I am

What Makes A Great Leader?
What exactly makes a great leader? Do certain personality traits make people better–suited to
leadership roles, or do characteristics of the situation make it more likely that certain people will
take charge? When we look at the leaders around us, be it our current boss or the President, we
might find ourselves wondering exactly why these individuals excel in such positions. People have
long been interested in leadership throughout human history, but it has only been relatively recent
that a number of formal leadership theories have emerged. Interest in leadership increased during the
early part of the twentieth century. Early leadership theories focused on what qualities distinguished
between leaders and followers, while subsequent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Have you ever heard a leader described as "born to lead?" According to this point of view (Great
Man Theory), great leaders are "simply born with the necessary internal characteristics such as
charisma, confidence, intelligence, and social skills that make them natural born leaders." Have you
ever heard that leaders are made, not born? Consider this the flip side of the Great Man Theory
(Behavioral Theory). This leadership theory focuses on "the actions of leaders not on mental
qualities or internal states, people can learn to become leaders through teaching and observation."
We have learned that the brain 's neo–cortex, which governs analytical and technical ability, grasps
concepts quickly, while utilizing an expanding network of association and comprehension. It
operates with magnificent efficiency and supports the Great Man Theory. We have learned that the
brain 's limbic system manages our feelings, impulses, and drives. The limbic system is a much
slower learner and is accomplished through lots of repetition and practice, motivation, and feedback.
It operates at a slower, more cautious pace and supports the Behaviorial Theory. The Great Man
Theory of leadership states that some people are born with the necessary attributes that set them
apart from others and that these traits are responsible for their assuming positions of power and
authority. A leader is a hero who accomplishes goals against all odds for his followers. The theory
implies that

Leadership
Review of Subject
Leadership has a variety of meanings to different individuals, often based upon the circumstance and
situation which defines the term leader or leadership. Northouse (2016) defines leadership as, "a
process by which an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal." (p. 6).
Sammi Caramella writes, "Leadership is critical to every company. Workers need someone to look
to, learn from and thrive with. Every leader has their own style and strategy. Further, leadership
styles and methods vary because of outside influences and personal challenges. While leadership is
unique to everyone, there are some common ways to define the term." (2017). According to Peter

I was not sure I could handle the position, but I had a Chief Petty Officer who took me under his

leadership techniques to help with my progression as a leader. He began with a skills approach and
later moved to more of a situational approach to help me learn my new role.
A skills approach takes a leader centered perspective on leadership with more emphasis on the skills
and abilities that an individual can learn. Using Katz's 1955 model, the three–skill approach
suggests that effective leadership depends on three essential personal skills: technical, human, and
conceptual. The technical skill is knowledge and skill in a type of work or activity while the human
skill is the ability and knowledge around working with people. Human skills involve people,
technical involve working with things, and conceptual skills involve working with ideas (Northouse,

The Theory Of Leadership Development
Introduction In this paper, the writer will discuss the concept of leadership development, whether a
person is born or developed to be a leader, what role mentoring has on follower's, and what being a
leader and follower mean. The writer will relate personal experience as well as scholarly research to
validate her perception of leadership development. The writer will provide enough information for
the reader to have a good understanding of leadership development, mentoring followers, and what
he or she believes is a leader and/or follower.
Is a Leader Born or Developed? One must be able to understand the definition of leadership before
making the determination is a leader is born or developed. Leadership is defined as "the process of
influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals" (Bethel University, 2011, p.16).
There are myths that tend to stand in the way of people fully understanding leadership development.
One would say that good leadership is having common sense, or leaders are born rather than made
or developed. Leaders have certain traits that make he or she be a good leader. One may assume that
a person is born a leader because of one's actions or attributes he or she maintains. A person can
have traits and behaviors that point in the direction of leadership. However, those traits and
behaviors do not necessarily mean that the leader was born that way nor developed that way.
Leadership is can be acquired in different ways. The important

Theories Of The Great Man Theory
Great man theory
This theory evolved around the 19th century, and was originally proposed by Thomas Carlyle. The
great man theory is basically assuming that, only an individual that was born with greatness is
indeed great. The focus on great leaders were limited to only men, as women were not seen as
leaders in any way. "Leaders are born and not made" (leadership theories). From this statement,
Thomas Carlyle is making it clear that a person cannot be made a great leader by any extrinsic
means, but it must be intrinsic traits of leadership that this person was born with, that can enable him
to become a great leader. "Great leaders will arise when there is a great need" (leadership theories).
By this, Carlyle meant that you may see a great leader every day without even knowing that this
person is a great leader, but as soon as the need arises for a great leader you will then recognize the
individual that was gifted to be the great leader in completing that specific task. This theory ... Show

This leadership theory argues that there is no specific way of leading, rather a leadership style
should be based on the situation. This means that when a person is set to lead, they will perform at
maximum level, however as soon as they are taken out of their element this level of performance
may fall. Also, a leadership style that worked well in one situation may not work well in another
situation and so it's based on how a leader adjust in various situations. "To a certain extent
contingency leadership theories are an extension of the trait theory, in the sense that human traits are
related to the situation in which the leaders exercise their leadership." (leadership theories). I agree
with this statement, since an individual in leadership mode would indeed possess better
characteristic traits than when they are not leading. This theory also assumed that leaders are more
likely to express their leadership when they feel that their followers will be

Characteristics Of Effective Leaders Have A Scientific Study
The traits that effective leaders have has always been a scientific study, the understanding of trait
theory is that effective leaders are born that way, not made, in early study it was called "The Great
Man" theory. Many scientific studies were done in from the 1930's to the 1950's.
The scientific studies that were done examined the mental, physical and social characteristics of
people, predominantly men. Most of these studies tried to find associations between individual traits
and leadership effectiveness. During these studies, physical traits like mental skills, social skills,
personality and even height were also studied. The conclusion that was eventually found from these
studies was that was no universal trait that separated effective leaders versus non leaders, or the
"Average Joe."
Early trait studies had several problems though; the measurement theory when these studies were
done was not at all sophisticated. There was very little known about the physical studies used to
operationalize traits. Due to this, different studies most likely used many different forms of
measurement to assess the same study, since there may have been different ways to assess the same
thing, the results cannot be valid. Due to the inconsistent findings from the studies that were done
trying to link individual traits to leadership effectiveness, most all studies of leadership traits were
abandoned in the 1950's. Still even today, the question still remains, are leaders born or

Leaders Are Born Not Made?
In modern day business, leadership has become an issue that is given far more attention and
investment than ever before. Leadership involves establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with
others so that they will follow willingly, providing the information, knowledge and methods to
realise that vision, and coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members and
stakeholder. This essay will discuss whether leaders are born not made, with varies of theories being
compared and contrasted and the strengths and limitations of leaders itself. Further this essay will
analyse the future aspects of theories which would establish whether a leader was born with
leadership qualities or made into a successful leader.
In the research carried out by Bass (1990), they found out that trait leadership theory believes some
people are born to lead because of their personal qualities, while others are not. Trait theory also
suggests that leadership is only accessible to the chosen ones and not available to all. In the past
researchers focused on traits that were able to measure such as physical characteristics, aspects of
personality and aptitudes. The current trait research has pointed the focus to more specific traits like
stress tolerance, energy level, emotional maturity, integrity and self–confidence. Reviews of the trait
research have found all of the above traits to be related to managerial effectiveness Bass (1990) and

Are Leaders Made Or Born?
Are leaders made or born? The ever–persistent question asked when someone starts talking about
leadership. To this I say we were all born, correct? Leaders and the leadership role are not inherited
traits passed down through the DNA genome pool of the extraordinary powerful leaders. No, they
build upon their naturally skills and abilities, and observe behaviors of great leaders before them.
Believing in themselves that their best is yet to come. So the answer is neither, great leaders adapt
and learn from their surroundings, the best leaders are the beast learners.
As an avid learner, I too was using the concepts from chapter nine before I even knew about this
class or book. I have also loved and enjoyed learning about new ideas, concepts, or skills. I was that
child growing up that learning came natural, so I was not the traditional student; do the homework
and learn the new idea. Instead I read and then read even more, beyond what was ever the "required"
reading, because I wanted to. I was all ways trying to fulfill that thirst for knowledge, having this
feeling that one day it would pay off. Without even realizing, I transitioned this same mentality into
my career field. I was learning to be a strong leader even before I knew I wanted to lead.
The book says Learning is the Master Skill, I agree one hundred percent with this. Working in a fast
paced kitchen as head chef for a higher end restaurant, your leadership qualities are constantly being

The idea of the Great Man also strayed into the mythic domain, with notions that in times of need, a
Great Man would arise, almost by magic. This was easy to verify, by pointing to people such as
Eisenhower and Churchill, let alone those further back along the timeline, even to Jesus, Moses,
Mohammed and the Buddha. Are some people born to lead? If we look at the great leaders of the
past like the one's that were mentioned earlier we will find that they do seem to differ from ordinary
human beings in several aspects. The same applies to the contemporary leaders like George W. Bush
and Mahatma Gandhi. They definitely possess high levels of ambition coupled with clear visions of
precisely where they want to go. These leaders are cited as naturally great leaders, born with a set of
personal qualities that made them effective leaders. Even today, the belief that truly great leaders are
born is common. Top executives, sports personalities, and even politicians often seem to possess an
aura that sets them apart from others. According to the contemporary theorists, leaders are not like
other people. They do not need to be intellectually genius or omniscient prophets to succeed, but
they definitely should have the right stuff which is not equally present in all people.

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs
the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent.
Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes such as beliefs, values, ethics,
character, knowledge and skills. When we think of leadership, we often think first of famous
individuals. We think of great political leaders: George Washington, Nelson Mandela, and Abraham
Lincoln. We may think of the leaders of social movements: Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther
King. We may think of spiritual leaders: Jesus Christ, Muhammad and Mother Teresa. We may think
of management leaders like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Richard Branson. We also include in our
definition some of the infamous leaders such as Adolf Hitler, Idi amin, or Saddam Hussein.
Obviously, leadership is not always or automatically good in and of itself.
Most of leadership is made, not born. Believing leaders are mostly born could have dangerous
consequences. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self–study, education,
training and experience.

Maintaining the peace and enforcing the law, requires officers to have leadership qualities. An
example of a great leadership is having the ability to set the bar high. According to Morreale,
"leaders set high standards of conduct and become role models, gaining trust, respect and
confidence from others;..." (Preparing Leaders for Law Enforcement, 2004). A leader wouldn 't do
the bare minimum that their job requires them to do. Leaders know that they are being watched and
aren 't afraid to be observed because they want to be observed. Morreale described how leaders that
set high standards of conduct end up becoming role models. This according to him inspires others to
do the same. Essentially, a leader inspires others to practice leadership qualities. A role model
inspiring others to set the bar high for themselves is an example of how leadership can be developed
and learned even within the lower ranks. For management, in order to develop the ability to set the
bar high, they themselves must set the bar high for themselves. Leaders must be able to accept
change. The criminal justice system is constantly dealing with new situations that requires
individuals to know how to deal with change. Unfortunately, the FBI reported that the law

Trait Theory Is Flawed: The Style Approach To Leadership
The critique with the most supporting evidence to suggest that trait theory is flawed is possibly the
Style approach to leadership. The style approach was developed in the 1940's and is centralised
around the idea that it is not what traits and characteristics the leader possesses, but rather the in the
behaviours they exhibit (Roberts, 2013). This argument analyses the types of behaviours, which the
leader has, and they ways in which they carry out their business, as opposed to the trait they may
have been born with.
Stodghill was one of the founding writers within Style approach theory, and similar to Allport, many
have since developed on his work using it as a basis for their argument, Mcaffery being one of them.
In 2004 Mcaffery analyses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When beginning to study this debate I found a whole host of information on both Trait Theory and
also The Style Approach. Having read a lot around this topic I believe that the both theories have
credible points that they raise, as well as both having some flaws which I believe discredit the work
of the theory. I personally believe that there is some form on "inner knowledge" that leaders possess
which enable them to become successful in their role, however I think that situational and
environmental factors play a big part as to whether they individual is likely to achieve this leader
status. However I do also believe that through extensive study there is the possibility for someone
who does not hold this gene to learn the skills and techniques that are needed to be able to become a
successful leader. Which appears to be a view that I share with Nielsen et al, 2015, as they state that

Are Leaders Made or Are Leaders Born?
The age old question. Are leaders made or are they born? My belief on this – I believe that a leader
is made, not born. Why do I say that? Before going further, lets be clear on one distinction – when
we say a leader is made, it does not mean that someone can be taught to become a leader by
attending leadership courses. While it helps, it is not enough. Warren Bennis (a leading leadership
researcher) believes that one cannot be taught to become a leader but one can learn to become a
leader over the years through life and work experiences, through mentors, personal reflection, etc.
What is a leader by the way? For the purpose of this discussion, lets define it as someone with
formal leadership authority in an organization. There is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, if I'm aware that I am not optimistic enough and tend to think of the downside more
often than the upside, I can learn to become more optimistic because I know doing so helps
strengthen that leadership trait in me. As a side point on the topic of optimism, evidence from
decades of research by Dr Martin Seligman shows that people can learn to be optimistic. The topic
is examined in great depth in his bestseller "Learned Optimism" – another excellent book I would

In summary, I would reiterate that while there are natual born leaders, leaders can indeed be "made"

The question of whether exceptional leaders are born with their strong leadership skills or if they
develop them over their (sometimes quite short) lives has been a point of controversy for a long
time, making many scientists scratch their heads. In the 20th century there was a strong belief that
we are able to become whoever we want to, nowadays, due to rapid progress in genetics we are
being told that our genes can make us prone to be more aggressive, have diabetes, cancer...but does
it actually mean we can be predetermined to be good leaders as well? In order to make my essay as
impartial as possible, I will analyze examples of leaders of different backgrounds, varying from
Osama Bin Laden to Arnold Schwarzenegger and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At an early age of 12 he was already engaging himself in conversations with religious leaders in
Jerusalem, which clearly indicate his gregarious nature and emotional intelligence well beyond his
age. Throughout his life he also kept his commitments, which is something that few leaders can
boast about, since many of them tend to adjust to constantly changing circumstances. He also
preached humility and love to each other. He practised what he preached too – by washing his
disciples' feet – something that would normally be carries out only by slaves. If we were to classify
his type of leadership even further, we could use University of Michigan Study which identifies two
behaviour characteristics associated with effective leadership: 'Employee oriented' or 'Production
oriented'. Since religion can be compared in certain aspects to any other industry, describing Jesus as
an "employee oriented" leader would be the most suitable comparison due to his sensitivity to
followers needs. In spite of him displaying all those leadership traits, I think it is important to
remember that he grew up knowing that he was special. If we look back at the very beginning of his
life, right at his birth he was visited by the Magi (Three Wise Men). Various passages of the bible
indicate that Jesus was a scholar learned in the scriptures and religious literature which was widely
available at the time. Having all of this in mind, we can clearly see that he was obviously

Why Leaders Are Born Or Made?
There is a well–known and often asked question of whether leaders are born or made. While the
origin of the question is unknown, the answers in response to the question are numerous. The terms
leadership and management have become increasingly prevalent in today's workplace. They are
often used in place of each other and in some cases the terms leadership and management are used
identically to each other. This has not always been the case. Leadership has a long history that dates
as far back as biblical times. According to Bass, "it is one of the world's oldest preoccupations"
(Bass, 1990). On the other hand, management as it relates to the workplace is a relatively new
concept in that it became more visible in organizations around the time of the Industrial Revolution.
It was during this time that large scale industrial plants with their high number of employees were in
need of people and processes that would make their complex and disorganized organizations operate
smoothly and more efficiently (Kotter, 1990). As a result, management as it is known today became
commonplace. The evolution of management since the Industrial Revolution has undergone many
changes. It was the catalyst that brought about changes in the way management was perceived and
administered in the workplace (Kotter, 2013). The management needs of organizations since the
Industrial Revolution still require regulation, order, and consistency. Many modern day

The Interview With Sara Watkins
Introduction Every individual has their own perception on what a leader is to them. What is a
leader? What characteristics does a leader have? Are leaders born or made? These questions, along
with many more throughout the process have given a general idea of what a good leader entails.
This grouped included 17 anonymous interviews that provides the thoughts and opinions of what
leadership is, which include similarities across the board along with some differences.
Analysis
There are two different kinds of leaders. One would be a team player and the other is more of a
dictator. Going through the interviews it was clear to point out which were more of a team player
when it came to leadership as opposed to one who would just call the ... Show more content on

Key words and phrases that I found in the research that correlate are anyone who influences, who
sets a good example, and is a great communicator.
There was also good feedback on whether a leader can be born or made. A majority seemed to think
that the answer is both. Nature vs. Nurture was brought up on multiple occasions throughout the
interviews saying that both are important. This made sense because just like any trait, if you don't
use it then you lose it. One might be born with the right traits and characteristics but it is ones
experiences that really brings them to light. It was brought up more than once that being born with
those traits just makes the path to being a leader easier. Though there was one who thought one
could only be born to be a leader.

historian of nineteenth century. The idea of the theory is leader and leadership. The basic idea of the
theory is that leaders are born and not made.
Thomas Carlyle, a historian in nineteenth century presented his ideas on leadership, named "The
Great Man Theory." Carlyle focused on the influence great men had on historical events. Like great
people such as Mohammad, Shakespeare, and Napoleon among others (Goleman).
The basic theme of The Great Man Theory is that "Leaders are born and not made" (Bass). Research

The distinctive feature is a gift or talent, according to some scholars including Carlyle. The theory
strongly asserts that leaders are born having such mystical abilities and are different from their
followers.
"Personal Factors: Cognitive– pluralist, radical and unitary ideologies, orientation of social
domination: Motivational– authoritarianism: Moral– egalitarianism and moral development along
with moral scope (Goleman, 48)."
"Situational Factors: Deep structures– norms, roles, history, distribution of wealth and hierarchy:
Goal Interdependence; and Culture (Goleman, 48)."
From mid–nineteenth century to the decade of 1940, the research on leadership was dominated by
efforts to show that there are characteristics or qualities that leaders have that set them from
followers. The research shows that leadership abilities are that of an effective and successful leader.
Studies have focused on the measurement of leadership traits and the relationship that is between

collaboration at all. I was fresh off of learning what collaboration was when I was introduced to the
skills that made it up. However, as the year went on I learned what the skills in collaboration were,
how it is important to leadership and to master it. Collaboration is made up of Decision–Making and
goal setting. What I learned about this skill is that Decision–making is very important to
collaboration because collaboration depends on people working together. Working together means
that people have to know how to make a decision in a group. I also learned that goal setting helps

The first piece of evidence was the definitions of Democracy and Articracy. This is important in
knowing about leadership because it is two of the most common types of leadership. This shows I

which one seemed to work in different circumstances. The second is the egg drop we did in class.
This egg drop was good at expressing the pros and cons of each of the two types of leadership. It
shows I mastered these skills because I could see that Artiscracy had it's uses if a group had to rush
and had certain things to get done fast and that democracy also had it's uses but it had to require the
whole group to agree. It really showed me the differences of the two. The final piece of evidence

Leadership And Leadership : Effective Leadership
This chapter teaches us knowledge of how effective leadership can provide positive ways to
influence others in order to accomplish goals. Managers could use trait leadership perspectives to
become better leaders. As a leader, motivating your employees is key to an organizational structure.
Leadership is a process which commences by following. Skill set born with or learned. As a
follower one can learn and improve in their performance to be an effective leader. According to the
text, leadership influence can be located in one person or be distributed throughout the group (pg.
282).
Formal v. Informal Leadership
The difference between them both, to my understanding is, is simply that one is related to a position
held by and individual (i.e., professors, ministers, politicians). Informal is a leader not needing to be
in a titled or authoritative position. They just have set skills to be effective leaders and influential on
others.
Leadership as Social Construction
Leadership role constructed in a social setting. Depending on the interaction in a social setting

Leadership as Identity Construction
The leadership identity construction involves the following process:
Claiming refers.
Granting.
These traits help to identify between leaders and followers. A model designed by DeRue and

George Washington: An Example Of An Effective Leader
When being asked if a leader is "born" or "made", I always say it is both. I believe a person needs to
be born with certain personality traits in order to be effective leader, but also they have to be taught
different skills so they know how use their personality traits. By combining the different theories, I
believe we can see what it takes to be leader. They must have the traits of emotional stability, open
to experience, conscientious, and intelligence. They also need to go through different experiences
and situations in life in order to be taught more leadership skills. I think an excellent example of a
leader was the first United States President, George Washington. I will use George Washington's life

Are Leaders Born Or Made?
"Are leader born or made?" I still remember the first time I had to seriously ponder that question. It
happened in August of 2011. I was roaming through a roomful of tables showcasing all the
extracurricular activities of my new community college. Suddenly, I stopped in front of a table with
a one–word poster: "L.E.G.O.". What attracted me to that table was the feeling of familiarity of the
word to my native language, Spanish. It is not really a word in Spanish and at that time, I didn't
know if it was an actual word in English. When I finally got near the table somebody gave me a
brief overview of what LEGO was and told me I could fill out an application and write a short essay.
The question of the essay was "are leader born or made?" and I decided to give it a shot. That was
the day I officially began my quest in finding out who I was as a leader. Today I believe leaders are
made and not born because my experience in life has shown me that being a leader is more than
having an extrovert personality is about being able to learn, recognize and follow great leaders, and
learn to be a follower as well as a leader. If leaders were born and not made my personality would
suggest I was anything but a leader. Some people say that depending on the child personalities, a
person could be a leader or not. As a child, I was not social nor shy. Normally, extroverted children
would spend their time calling their parents attention, but I spent it exercising my curiosity. At home

The Importance Of A Leader And The Process Of A Leadership
As Northouse (2013) mentions, there are phrases as 'he was born to be a leader' or 'she is a natural
leader' which suggest that people tend to think good leaders are born and not made. Can people learn
how to be a leader, or they are born to be a leader? This question possessed the minds of many
researchers for many years, and often asked by the top managers. Long–term studies did not give a
satisfactory answer; however, teachers of management tend to believe that most of the leadership
skills can be developed by people themselves. Although, it is needed to have the appropriate
personality traits from the beginning. There are a lot of various leadership theories which may help
to understand the characteristics of a leader and the process of a leadership.
Fiedler and Garcla (1987) stated that leader is defined as a person who is "appointed, elected, or
informally chosen to direct and co–ordinate the work of others in a group". According to trait
theories, effective leaders share a number of common characteristics or 'traits'. The first studies have
tried to identify the qualities that distinguish the great leaders in the history of the masses.
Researchers believe that the leaders had some unique set of stable traits, which do not change as
time pass. For this reason, scientists have tried to define leadership qualities, learn to measure and
use them to identify the leaders. This approach is based on the belief that leaders are born, not made.
For example, Smith and Foti

My Leadership Philosophy
To be a leader in today's society, in my opinion, one must possess genuine abilities that empower
and strengthen those they wish to lead or mentor. The idea that an individual is born with the skill
set and talents of someone that has spent the majority of their life "evolving" through priceless
experience is both extremely farfetched and a bit unbelievable. However, throughout my own
experiences, I have seen others achieve leadership positions through training and or personal
development. Moreover, I am sure that there are some "would be leaders" that have a natural talent
for leadership but I use the term "some" lightly. Research has shown that the qualities of a leader are
not necessarily tied to one or the other but leaders have shown

Leaders Are Born Or Made?
The question of whether leaders are born or made, is one that has been asked just as much as which
came first, the chicken or the egg. It is a question, which all of us ponder through our own journey
in leadership. For most of us, becoming an effective leader is hard and daunting work. Some of us
grow up wanting to be leaders, while others sort of just fall into leadership, without really realizing
when or how they became leaders. For some, leadership begins at an early age, perhaps during
childhood. Others begin their journey later on in life, as they enter the workforce and co–workers
are naturally drawn to them, going to them for direction, advice or guidance. Whatever, the start of
one's leadership role, I believe we all show leadership at some times in our lives, some just are in
those roles for most of their lives. Being an effective leader is about transforming ourselves, from
what we are to what we want to be. As leaders we must be able to embark on a deep and personal
journey of self–growth, in order to realize great results in ourselves and our organization. Before
being able to call ourselves great leaders, we must be able to lead ourselves, to believe that we have
the ability to impact others in a positive way and more importantly, we must believe that our actions
have the power to motivate others and inspire them to do and accomplish great things. I think it is
important to remember that how we exercise authority or leadership over others is an

Zaleznik (1977) contends there has been a shift from the leader being viewed as an idolised head of
business, to an artist. This has been summarised by Angelucci (2005: 12) as leadership revolving
around the art of managing people "which requires willingness to accept and understand their
human aspects and diversity".
Singe (1997: 32) went further by suggesting we have "to surrender the myth of leaders as isolated
heroes commanding their organisations from on high". In future, leadership "will be distributed
among diverse individuals and teams who share responsibility for creating the organisations future".
These findings suggest the isolated roles of manager and leader should cease to exist, and that all
organisations need elements of leadership throughout.
2.4 CAN THE ROLES OF THE MANAGER AND LEADER BE DEVELOPED?
Management in its basic technical form is tangible and can be developed. Budgeting, resource
allocation and human resource management courses are widespread. Interestingly Bennis (2009)
found throughout his study that United States organisations were under–led and over–managed. He
placed fault with the management schools, suggesting they trained candidates technically but not as
leaders. Hence, the difficulty lies in developing the leadership skills necessary throughout
organisations.
Parks (2005) argues that leadership is not reliant on having appropriate natural

Basketball Legend Kobe Bryant
Basketball legend Kobe Bryant, once said, "If you're going to, you're not going to please everybody.
You gotta hold everybody accountable, even if you have that moment of being uncomfortable."
Kobe Bryant was a basketball player who played for the Los Angeles Lakers his whole career. He
was not just a basketball player but a captain and leader for his team. But he wasn't always this way.
When he first started it out he was very shy, immature, and very comfortable, not leadership
material. But through trial and error, consequences and repercussions, he grew to become a very
successful leader and player. The results speak for themselves, multiple MVPs, Championships, and
many other accolades. A leader comes in all shapes and sizes. From basketball players to politicians,
and even presidents and dictators. A leader is a leader no matter what the job may be and anyone can
become one. Leaders are born and not made because of skills, experience, and development.
According to Merriam–Webster, "leadership is the office or position of a leader recently assumed
the leadership of the company; capacity to lead." The key word is the capacity to lead. Anybody and
anyone can lead, it just takes experience and training. In a recent 2017 journal, the author states,
"We all have talents, some which make it easier to step into a leadership role, but without the right
situation, development, and awareness, those talents may be wasted. Not everyone has the talent to
be a great leader, but every great leader needs more than just skills to fulfill that role." (American
Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 2017; 81 (3) Article 58). A person can have all the skill and
talent in the world, but if they are not put in a certain position to go out and demonstrate those
talents, then all those abilities they have don't matter. Anyone can lead, they just need to be in the
right situation to do so.
A 2015 study stated 50% of Employers felt it was difficult to find candidates with the skills they are
seeking. The main reason for this is because people really don't know the difference between a skill
and a trait. Merriam–Webster's dictionary defines a skill as: "the ability to do something that comes

Leaders Are Born Not Made
Leadership Development In today's business world, organizations will tell you there are numerous
factors that contribute to the overall success of the company. These factors include great people,
great culture, great leadership, great operations, and a great vision for the organization. In my
opinion, great leaders are the ones who inspire and motivate the employees to be the best they can
be. We have all heard the saying that "leaders are born not made", but I would argue great leadership
takes a heavy dose of self–reflection and discipline, along with consistent and constant educational
and mentoring experiences. Having been in leadership roles for over 22 years of my life, I can
assure you I am not the same leader today, that I was 20 years ago. The key for organizational
success is to have people that want to be developed while developing others. Great leaders typically
breed great leaders, and these successors are the future leadership of one's organization or the next.
Dubrin (2016) stated that leadership development programs are widely practiced in a variety of
ways across a variety of organizations. My research proved him right when comparing leadership
programs from the healthcare, fire, and education industries. In this paper, I will explain how leaders
develop through self–awareness and self–discipline. In addition, I will also discuss how leaders

Two Approaches Of Leadership And Leadership
Leaders throughout history have displayed many characteristics and traits which make them who
they are, and influence the decisions they make. Whether or not the leader was born with these traits
has never been scientifically proven. However, it is within human nature that we learn through trial
and experience to improve our mental cognitive ability, and therefore leaders are, until proven
otherwise, made not born. Whether a leader is born a leader, or made a leader is not relevant to the
end result. What is relevant is if one of the two approaches of leadership produces a better leader.
Leaders play a large role in society, and great leaders play a large role in history. Trying to
hypothesise whether leaders are born or made is ironic, as by studying that topic, you are effectively
helping to make future leaders. Leaders are crucial to the continuing development of the human
race. Without leaders, the world would hardly change from when humans first inhabited it. Leaders
inspire change, with goals and aims in place to further develop the human race. While not all leaders
have the same ideology as others, they are still reaching to enhance the population. Leaders have
been present throughout all history, and many have played a large role in how society operates
today. Leaders usually show many similar characteristics to each other, and for this reason, many
believe that a leader must have these same qualities or traits to be a successful leader. Of interest
however, is

The Great Man Theory Of Leadership
The Great Man Theory of leadership dates back to the early 1900s where it was strongly believed
that great leaders are born, not made. The basic premise of this theory has been contested since the
inception of leadership study. While recent studies show some evidence to the contrary, the
fundamental principle of the theory does retain some validity. The historian Thomas Carlyle coined
the Great Man Theory as he argues the world's history is simply a collection of biographies
belonging to great men (U, 2016). Although referred to as the Great Man Theory, the foundation of
the theory is gender neutral. It has more recently been termed the Great Man/Great Woman Theory
of leadership, removing the gender associated bias. The lack of ... Show more content on

Executives, military leaders and senior government officials often possess a similar charisma that
empowers them to lead effectively. Although they have all likely attended a slew of leadership
seminars and workshops, there remains a certain x factor they all possess. To gain a worldwide
perspective on the question born or made, the Center for Creative Leadership posed the question to
executives spanning 53 countries. The results indicated a consensus to the contrary of the Great Man
Theory. More than half, 53.4% of respondents believe that leaders are made, referred to as "Mades"
while only 19.1% believe that they are born, "Borns". Interestingly, about a quarter of the executives
surveyed, 28.5%, think leaders are both born and made. (Mascone, 2013) Analyzing further, a
combined 47.6% think there is some validity to being born a leader. Thus, it proves difficult to
arrive at a conclusion with empirical data in support of either theory.
The survey expanded on various leadership topics in an effort to determine what Borns and Mades
believe are important characteristics of leaders. Both Borns and Mades believe that leaders should
be humane, charismatic, participative and team oriented. Borns are more likely to believe that
following protocol and behaving in traditional ways in accordance with the status and position of a
leader will make them more effective.

contribution to this lifelong debate will serve as a pointer to my position on this issue. I strongly

I believe creativity is one of the top qualities that born leaders posses, its the ability to tap into the
subconscious to bring out great ideas. "Creative leaders have the ability to re–think their business
models and come up with ideas to drastically change their enterprise". (Stephen 2011) Although
Creativity is considered as one of the most prominent qualities that great leaders possess, another
key innate ability is Confidence. Confidence is among the traits of great leaders, confidence cannot
be taught; confidence for most great leaders is inborn. Francisco Dao in his article wrote– "Without
Confidence there is no leadership; leadership is about having the confidence to make decisions. If
someone is afraid to make and commit to decisions, all of the communication and empowerment in
the world won't make a squat of difference". (Dao 2008) Another quality that great leaders are born
with is Passion. Leaders always exhibit this quality in any area they find themselves. Being
passionate about an idea, a project, a business is just learnt in the confines of the four walls of a
classroom, it's a trait that is inborn. "Passionate leaders spread passion to others
through their love of life, doing new things, taking risks, being motivated, having a sense of

People’S Beliefs On How Individuals Become Leaders Affect

  • 1. People’S Beliefs On How Individuals Become Leaders Affect People's beliefs on how individuals become leaders affect the way they evaluate leadership potentials. If people believe that leaders are born, it is likely to result in selecting or identifying the right people for leadership positions rather than developing the leaders. Leadership refers to the exercise of influence over others on behalf of a specific purpose, goals, and aims of the leaders. Some leadership theories such as Trait theory and Great Man theory believe that individuals inherit some traits and qualities that make them suited for leadership (Lussier & Achua, 2015). However Gentry, Deal, Stawiski & Ruderman (2012) believes that a good leader is developed through constant growth, mentoring, experience, and learning. Such leaders ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, leaders need to be smart to evaluate situations and come up with courses of action. This makes social intelligence an important leadership trait. An aspect of empathy and ability to understand followers is important to leaders. These traits are believed to be natural within an individual. However, differentiating between leadership emergence and effectiveness is important in understanding the issue of inborn leadership traits (Gentry, Deal, Stawiski & Ruderman, 2012). Leadership effectiveness refers to the performance of the leader while emergence refers to being valved into a leadership role. In many cases, inborn leadership traits are associated with the emergence of leadership. Meaning that within a group of peers, those who are more intelligent or are more extraverted tend to have a better influence on a group. However, this does not mean that these individuals perform better than others when placed in a formal leadership position. Most studies investigating the relationship between leadership and extraversion have found a weak relationship, making it difficult to draw conclusions from such positions. However, some studies have indicated a strong relationship when looking at specific job types. In this case, extraversion predicts that performance in jobs with the competitive social element such as sales. On the other hand, extraversion would predict other less desirable outcomes such as absenteeism. Further, when investigating the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Are Leaders Born Or Made Identify and Share Your Leadership Story Christina Faulk Northcentral University November 19, 2017 Abstract This paper adds insight to whether leaders are born or made. In this paper you will find my beliefs on this topic, as well as my personal leadership story. The meaning of leadership is varied based on individual viewpoints and experiences. Many characteristics of a leader can be said to be based on behavior, influence and one's interpersonal skills (Yukl, 2006). Are Leaders Born or Made? "Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations" ("Leadership", n.d.). Survey ten (10) people on their definition of a great leader and you will most likely receive ten (10) different definitions. How leaders come about can be argued several different ways. 361 C– level executives (those at the top of organizations) were asked whether they thought leaders were born or made. While 28.5% believed that they are both born and made, 19.1% believed they are born, and 52.4% believed they are made (Gentry, Deal, and Stawiski, 2016). Leaders are Born One may be able to argue that a leader can only be born. Born leaders have the charisma which cannot be taught or learned. They are natural inspirers, and can often be given a task and can develop a team around it. Born leaders can take this team and have everyone on board and believing in ... • 5. Are Leaders Made or Born: a Critique of Great Manand Trait... ARE LEADERS BORN OR MADE: A critique of Great Man and Trait theories. Assignment prepared by Philip Barry 387169 August 08 Introduction Leadership continues to be one of the most debated and studied topics in management and indeed society as a whole. This can be evidenced by the fact that if you search for leadership on Goggle 175,000,000 worldwide hits are recorded. Success in many arenas, whether it be business, the military, politics or the wider community is often primarily attributed to good leadership. Equally, organisational failure or under–performance is just as readily attributed to poor leadership. Leadership has been the subject of intense interest and debate for over two and a half millennia, from Plato ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thirdly the two schools of thought dismiss the leader follower relationship, portraying a very one way relationship where followers have little to no impact on leaders. While such a model may have some relevance in a highly centralised command and control organisation in the public and voluntary sector (The NHS in particular) as well as LEAN organisations such as Toyota the leader follower relationship is much more complicated. Most importantly, however "Great Man" and Trait theorists ignore the situation and context that the leader is operating in. As Stoghill 1948 argues it is difficult to isolate a set of traits and characteristics of leaders without factoring in the situational effects. Importantly too, much of the research on traits is not directed at understanding the impact leaders have on outcomes or on those they lead. Hence while the research looks at traits that may be important in leader emergence the research tends not to explore the relationship between leadership traits and employee productivity or employee satisfaction. A significant criticism of the schools is that they romanticize the great leader presenting both a one sided portrayal of leadership as well as often conveniently glossing over their failings of ... • 10. Leadership As A Theory Of Leadership Literature Review The first research on leadership in 1910 gave rise to the notion those there certain individuals that have traits that they are born with that make them great leaders. That is natural born leaders as other are not born with such traits, however; much research followed to verify the 1910 conclusion. Max Weber identified charismatic leadership as a theory on leadership that was new and emerging, As per Max, charisma is a personal magnetism or charge in the sense that leaders are those that can attract others to them. While other concluded that leaders are not born, they are made (Malphurs, 2003). It is about speaking softly but carrying a big stick and it is obvious that what you cannot separate are leadership and learning. It is about learning to the condition in the sense that one can reveal a glorious and power inner self. Many people hold the truth that leaders are born to lead, and this is a notion made by a mysterious confluence of events or both de (Vries & Engellau, 2004). Personal view of the literature Research conclusively indicates that effective leadership is much more on specific principles that get easily followed by anyone and leaders that are effective depend less and less on an innate trait. Such research has prompted a lot of excitement in the sense that people can easily share the views of their purpose. However, there are many with their opinion on the matter (Gardner & Laskin, 2011). In history, we have seen the great leader, and one of them is General Hoyts. He and Vanderberg were one of the most dominant military commanders. He becomes the U.S Air force's second chief of staff. General Vandenberg was not a natural leader this is per Commandant Cadets at West Point. • 12. Leadership As A Leader And Gaining Leadership Qualities As a result of living in a society that puts a great deal of importance on becoming a leader and gaining leadership qualities, work places and organisations have now resulted in investing large sums in sponsoring employees take part in leadership programs and training courses. The term leadership is broad and open to interpretation. Peters and Waterman (1982, P. 79) define leadership as "meticulously shifting the attention of the institutions through the mundane language of management systems. It is altering agendas so that new agendas get attention. It is being visible when things go awry and invisible when they are working well. It is building a loyal team that speaks more or less with one voice. It's listening carefully most of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many theories that contribute to the discussion of leadership some of which are: Trait, Behavioural, Contingency, Relational theory and the Style theory. The contingency theory claims that there is no set way to lead an organisation. This is due to the fact that both external and internal factors need to be considered by the leader and need to be handled accordingly. The Relational theory looks into how relations within an organisation develop leaders and at how leaders are required to be accustomed to others within the organisation. The Style theory of leadership proposes that they style of leadership is the key to good leadership. It looks at leaders and their style of leadership for example Steve Jobs would lead in a very autocratic manner whereas Richard Branson is seen to be a democratic leader. The managerial grid is also part of the style based theory; it allows people to embrace a leadership style that is both people friendly and achieve target production. However this theory has been criticised of being too simplistic as different people would prefer to be lead in different ways. Having said this there are two main theories that have become the result of this debate: behavioural and trait. The trait theory believes that people are born with leadership characteristics such as imagination, determination and enthusiasm. The analysis of mental, physical and social attributes of leaders resulted in the trait theory being developed. Whereas the behavioural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Characteristics Of A Great Leader To be a great leader one must have many attributes or qualities. Some of the most important are flexibility, communication, courage, humility, and responsibility. A great leader must be flexible as being a leader usually consists of dealing with new challenges all the time, especially in the technological age. Communication consists of effectively conveying expectations and understanding how people will interpret the leader's directions. A great leader must have the courage to see the path that the group must take to complete the goal regardless of the consequences. When a great leader does not correctly handle a situation he or she must have the humility to admit that he or she was wrong. Also, this leader must be responsible for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part of the reason that the idea of great leaders being born is appealing is that a great leader is so hard to define. It can be discussed what great leaders do and how they act. Sometimes all we are good at though is identifying who a great leader is outside of ourselves. It is difficult to answer the question "Why aren't you a great leader?". The initial reaction would most commonly be that you just aren't. It seems that you weren't meant to be. With that the idea that great leaders are born to be that way seems appealing. If we look at history many great leaders came seemingly out of nowhere. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln did not need to attend leadership seminars to lead the nation. With all that is done for leadership nowadays and the mixed results, it seems that there is something intrinsic that great leaders have. Many companies focus their efforts on trying to develop leaders from within the company to fill critical roles. Many times though there is a leadership talent gap from where the company would like the given leader to be and where he or she actually is. A lot of what is attributed to a leader begin great is luck. To be truly great the leader usually is presented with a monumental opportunity to lead in the face of adversity. The leader is lucky to have come upon this situation and be given the chance to rise to the occasion. By capitalizing on this lucky situation the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Why Is It Important To Say That Leaders Are Born Not Made "Leaders are Born, Not Made" Discuss. Introduction Whether leaders are born and not made is a discussion that has been debated for centuries and yet it still divides opinion today. Like many, on receiving this assignment my instinctive gut response was that they are! However, over the course of my exploration into the subject matter and in greater reflection of my own personal experiences, my contention is now similar to that of the famous and successful American football coach Vince Lombardi who said "Leaders are not born, they're made. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile" This sentiment will form the basis of my argument and my position on the topic. ... They were the leaders we all grew up with, and at an age that was impossible for them to have received any formalised training or development. Another angle to discuss is personality and the very plausible belief that we are born predisposed to certain personality traits. If this holds true then surely certain personality types are better suited to positions of leadership. Therefore. an introvert is unlikely to feel comfortable leading, commanding and being followed, nor are they likely to possess the necessary communication and influencing skills required to garner support and followers. A person born with a lack of confidence is also unlikely to ever seek out leadership or be comfortable if it is thrust upon them. Desire, another personality trait, in my opinion is also a very important quality in that it essential prerequisite trait that must be possessed by those that go on to become great leaders. Those that do not have the necessary desire to succeed – rarely do. Leaders are Made – The evidence The root of my position stems from another debate. A discussion which, in many ways, runs in parallel with this one – the discussion of 'nature vs. nurture', on this topic I passionately sit on the side of 'nurture' and therefore would feel somewhat hypocritical if I were to advocate the notion that 'leaders are born!'

Do certain personality traits make people better–suited to leadership roles, or do characteristics of the situation make it more likely that certain people will take charge? When we look at the leaders around us, be it our current boss or the President, we might find ourselves wondering exactly why these individuals excel in such positions. People have long been interested in leadership throughout human history, but it has only been relatively recent that a number of formal leadership theories have emerged. Interest in leadership increased during the early part of the twentieth century. Early leadership theories focused on what qualities distinguished between leaders and followers, while subsequent ... According to this point of view (Great Man Theory), great leaders are "simply born with the necessary internal characteristics such as charisma, confidence, intelligence, and social skills that make them natural born leaders." Have you ever heard that leaders are made, not born? Consider this the flip side of the Great Man Theory (Behavioral Theory). This leadership theory focuses on "the actions of leaders not on mental qualities or internal states, people can learn to become leaders through teaching and observation." We have learned that the brain 's neo–cortex, which governs analytical and technical ability, grasps concepts quickly, while utilizing an expanding network of association and comprehension. It operates with magnificent efficiency and supports the Great Man Theory. We have learned that the brain 's limbic system manages our feelings, impulses, and drives. The limbic system is a much slower learner and is accomplished through lots of repetition and practice, motivation, and feedback. It operates at a slower, more cautious pace and supports the Behaviorial Theory. The Great Man Theory of leadership states that some people are born with the necessary attributes that set them apart from others and that these traits are responsible for their assuming positions of power and authority. • 23. The Theory Of Leadership Development Introduction In this paper, the writer will discuss the concept of leadership development, whether a person is born or developed to be a leader, what role mentoring has on follower's, and what being a leader and follower mean. The writer will relate personal experience as well as scholarly research to validate her perception of leadership development. The writer will provide enough information for the reader to have a good understanding of leadership development, mentoring followers, and what he or she believes is a leader and/or follower. Is a Leader Born or Developed? One must be able to understand the definition of leadership before making the determination is a leader is born or developed. Leadership is defined as "the process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals" (Bethel University, 2011, p.16). There are myths that tend to stand in the way of people fully understanding leadership development. One would say that good leadership is having common sense, or leaders are born rather than made or developed. Leaders have certain traits that make he or she be a good leader. One may assume that a person is born a leader because of one's actions or attributes he or she maintains. A person can have traits and behaviors that point in the direction of leadership. However, those traits and behaviors do not necessarily mean that the leader was born that way nor developed that way. Leadership is can be acquired in different ways. The important ... • 25. Theories Of The Great Man Theory Great man theory This theory evolved around the 19th century, and was originally proposed by Thomas Carlyle. The great man theory is basically assuming that, only an individual that was born with greatness is indeed great. The focus on great leaders were limited to only men, as women were not seen as leaders in any way. "Leaders are born and not made" (leadership theories). From this statement, Thomas Carlyle is making it clear that a person cannot be made a great leader by any extrinsic means, but it must be intrinsic traits of leadership that this person was born with, that can enable him to become a great leader. "Great leaders will arise when there is a great need" (leadership theories). By this, Carlyle meant that you may see a great leader every day without even knowing that this person is a great leader, but as soon as the need arises for a great leader you will then recognize the individual that was gifted to be the great leader in completing that specific task. This theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This leadership theory argues that there is no specific way of leading, rather a leadership style should be based on the situation. Also, a leadership style that worked well in one situation may not work well in another situation and so it's based on how a leader adjust in various situations. "To a certain extent contingency leadership theories are an extension of the trait theory, in the sense that human traits are related to the situation in which the leaders exercise their leadership." Characteristics Of Effective Leaders Have A Scientific Study The traits that effective leaders have has always been a scientific study, the understanding of trait theory is that effective leaders are born that way, not made, in early study it was called "The Great Man" theory. Many scientific studies were done in from the 1930's to the 1950's. The scientific studies that were done examined the mental, physical and social characteristics of people, predominantly men. Most of these studies tried to find associations between individual traits and leadership effectiveness. During these studies, physical traits like mental skills, social skills, personality and even height were also studied. The conclusion that was eventually found from these studies was that was no universal trait that separated effective leaders versus non leaders, or the "Average Joe." Early trait studies had several problems though; the measurement theory when these studies were done was not at all sophisticated. There was very little known about the physical studies used to operationalize traits. Due to this, different studies most likely used many different forms of measurement to assess the same study, since there may have been different ways to assess the same thing, the results cannot be valid. Due to the inconsistent findings from the studies that were done trying to link individual traits to leadership effectiveness, most all studies of leadership traits were abandoned in the 1950's. Leadership involves establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with others so that they will follow willingly, providing the information, knowledge and methods to realise that vision, and coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members and stakeholder. This essay will discuss whether leaders are born not made, with varies of theories being compared and contrasted and the strengths and limitations of leaders itself. Further this essay will analyse the future aspects of theories which would establish whether a leader was born with leadership qualities or made into a successful leader. In the research carried out by Bass (1990), they found out that trait leadership theory believes some people are born to lead because of their personal qualities, while others are not. Trait theory also suggests that leadership is only accessible to the chosen ones and not available to all. In the past researchers focused on traits that were able to measure such as physical characteristics, aspects of personality and aptitudes. The current trait research has pointed the focus to more specific traits like stress tolerance, energy level, emotional maturity, integrity and self–confidence. Reviews of the trait research have found all of the above traits to be related to managerial effectiveness Bass (1990) and Marques (2010). When looking at the results of ... Leaders and the leadership role are not inherited traits passed down through the DNA genome pool of the extraordinary powerful leaders. No, they build upon their naturally skills and abilities, and observe behaviors of great leaders before them. Believing in themselves that their best is yet to come. So the answer is neither, great leaders adapt and learn from their surroundings, the best leaders are the beast learners. Instead I read and then read even more, beyond what was ever the "required" reading, because I wanted to. I was all ways trying to fulfill that thirst for knowledge, having this feeling that one day it would pay off. Without even realizing, I transitioned this same mentality into my career field. I was learning to be a strong leader even before I knew I wanted to lead. The book says Learning is the Master Skill, I agree one hundred percent with this. The style approach was developed in the 1940's and is centralised around the idea that it is not what traits and characteristics the leader possesses, but rather the in the behaviours they exhibit (Roberts, 2013). This argument analyses the types of behaviours, which the leader has, and they ways in which they carry out their business, as opposed to the trait they may have been born with. • 46. Why Leaders Are Born Or Made? There is a well–known and often asked question of whether leaders are born or made. While the origin of the question is unknown, the answers in response to the question are numerous. The terms leadership and management have become increasingly prevalent in today's workplace. They are often used in place of each other and in some cases the terms leadership and management are used identically to each other. This has not always been the case. Leadership has a long history that dates as far back as biblical times. According to Bass, "it is one of the world's oldest preoccupations" (Bass, 1990). On the other hand, management as it relates to the workplace is a relatively new concept in that it became more visible in organizations around the time of the Industrial Revolution. It was during this time that large scale industrial plants with their high number of employees were in need of people and processes that would make their complex and disorganized organizations operate smoothly and more efficiently (Kotter, 1990). As a result, management as it is known today became commonplace. The evolution of management since the Industrial Revolution has undergone many changes. It was the catalyst that brought about changes in the way management was perceived and administered in the workplace (Kotter, 2013). • 58. Are Leaders Born Or Made? "Are leader born or made?" I still remember the first time I had to seriously ponder that question. It happened in August of 2011. I was roaming through a roomful of tables showcasing all the extracurricular activities of my new community college. Suddenly, I stopped in front of a table with a one–word poster: "L.E.G.O.". What attracted me to that table was the feeling of familiarity of the word to my native language, Spanish. It is not really a word in Spanish and at that time, I didn't know if it was an actual word in English. When I finally got near the table somebody gave me a brief overview of what LEGO was and told me I could fill out an application and write a short essay. The question of the essay was "are leader born or made?" and I decided to give it a shot. That was the day I officially began my quest in finding out who I was as a leader. Today I believe leaders are made and not born because my experience in life has shown me that being a leader is more than having an extrovert personality is about being able to learn, recognize and follow great leaders, and learn to be a follower as well as a leader. If leaders were born and not made my personality would suggest I was anything but a leader. Some people say that depending on the child personalities, a person could be a leader or not. As a child, I was not social nor shy. Normally, extroverted children would spend their time calling their parents attention, but I spent it exercising my curiosity. At home and in ... • 60. The Importance Of A Leader And The Process Of A Leadership As Northouse (2013) mentions, there are phrases as 'he was born to be a leader' or 'she is a natural leader' which suggest that people tend to think good leaders are born and not made. Can people learn how to be a leader, or they are born to be a leader? This question possessed the minds of many researchers for many years, and often asked by the top managers. Long–term studies did not give a satisfactory answer; however, teachers of management tend to believe that most of the leadership skills can be developed by people themselves. Although, it is needed to have the appropriate personality traits from the beginning. There are a lot of various leadership theories which may help to understand the characteristics of a leader and the process of a leadership. Fiedler and Garcla (1987) stated that leader is defined as a person who is "appointed, elected, or informally chosen to direct and co–ordinate the work of others in a group". According to trait theories, effective leaders share a number of common characteristics or 'traits'. The first studies have tried to identify the qualities that distinguish the great leaders in the history of the masses. Researchers believe that the leaders had some unique set of stable traits, which do not change as time pass. For this reason, scientists have tried to define leadership qualities, learn to measure and use them to identify the leaders. This approach is based on the belief that leaders are born, not made. For example, Smith and Foti ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. My Leadership Philosophy To be a leader in today's society, in my opinion, one must possess genuine abilities that empower and strengthen those they wish to lead or mentor. The idea that an individual is born with the skill set and talents of someone that has spent the majority of their life "evolving" through priceless experience is both extremely farfetched and a bit unbelievable. However, throughout my own experiences, I have seen others achieve leadership positions through training and or personal development. Moreover, I am sure that there are some "would be leaders" that have a natural talent for leadership but I use the term "some" lightly. Research has shown that the qualities of a leader are not necessarily tied to one or the other but leaders have shown ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Leaders Are Born Or Made? The question of whether leaders are born or made, is one that has been asked just as much as which came first, the chicken or the egg. It is a question, which all of us ponder through our own journey in leadership. For most of us, becoming an effective leader is hard and daunting work. Some of us grow up wanting to be leaders, while others sort of just fall into leadership, without really realizing when or how they became leaders. For some, leadership begins at an early age, perhaps during childhood. Others begin their journey later on in life, as they enter the workforce and co–workers are naturally drawn to them, going to them for direction, advice or guidance. Whatever, the start of one's leadership role, I believe we all show leadership at some times in our lives, some just are in those roles for most of their lives. Being an effective leader is about transforming ourselves, from what we are to what we want to be. As leaders we must be able to embark on a deep and personal journey of self–growth, in order to realize great results in ourselves and our organization. Before being able to call ourselves great leaders, we must be able to lead ourselves, to believe that we have the ability to impact others in a positive way and more importantly, we must believe that our actions have the power to motivate others and inspire them to do and accomplish great things. I think it is important to remember that how we exercise authority or leadership over others is an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Zaleznik (1977) contends there has been a shift from the leader being viewed as an idolised head of business, to an artist. This has been summarised by Angelucci (2005: 12) as leadership revolving around the art of managing people "which requires willingness to accept and understand their human aspects and diversity". Singe (1997: 32) went further by suggesting we have "to surrender the myth of leaders as isolated heroes commanding their organisations from on high". In future, leadership "will be distributed among diverse individuals and teams who share responsibility for creating the organisations future". These findings suggest the isolated roles of manager and leader should cease to exist, and that all organisations need elements of leadership throughout. 2.4 CAN THE ROLES OF THE MANAGER AND LEADER BE DEVELOPED? Management in its basic technical form is tangible and can be developed. Budgeting, resource allocation and human resource management courses are widespread. Interestingly Bennis (2009) found throughout his study that United States organisations were under–led and over–managed. He placed fault with the management schools, suggesting they trained candidates technically but not as leaders. Hence, the difficulty lies in developing the leadership skills necessary throughout

  • 69. Basketball Legend Kobe Bryant Basketball legend Kobe Bryant, once said, "If you're going to, you're not going to please everybody. You gotta hold everybody accountable, even if you have that moment of being uncomfortable." Kobe Bryant was a basketball player who played for the Los Angeles Lakers his whole career. He was not just a basketball player but a captain and leader for his team. But he wasn't always this way. When he first started it out he was very shy, immature, and very comfortable, not leadership material. But through trial and error, consequences and repercussions, he grew to become a very successful leader and player. The results speak for themselves, multiple MVPs, Championships, and many other accolades. A leader comes in all shapes and sizes. From basketball players to politicians, and even presidents and dictators. A leader is a leader no matter what the job may be and anyone can become one. Leaders are born and not made because of skills, experience, and development. According to Merriam–Webster, "leadership is the office or position of a leader recently assumed the leadership of the company; capacity to lead." The key word is the capacity to lead. Anybody and anyone can lead, it just takes experience and training. In a recent 2017 journal, the author states, "We all have talents, some which make it easier to step into a leadership role, but without the right situation, development, and awareness, those talents may be wasted. Not everyone has the talent to be a great leader, but every great leader needs more than just skills to fulfill that role." (American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 2017; 81 (3) Article 58). A person can have all the skill and talent in the world, but if they are not put in a certain position to go out and demonstrate those talents, then all those abilities they have don't matter. Anyone can lead, they just need to be in the right situation to do so. A 2015 study stated 50% of Employers felt it was difficult to find candidates with the skills they are seeking. The main reason for this is because people really don't know the difference between a skill and a trait. Merriam–Webster's dictionary defines a skill as: "the ability to do something that comes from training, experience, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Leaders Are Born Not Made Leadership Development In today's business world, organizations will tell you there are numerous factors that contribute to the overall success of the company. These factors include great people, great culture, great leadership, great operations, and a great vision for the organization. In my opinion, great leaders are the ones who inspire and motivate the employees to be the best they can be. We have all heard the saying that "leaders are born not made", but I would argue great leadership takes a heavy dose of self–reflection and discipline, along with consistent and constant educational and mentoring experiences. Having been in leadership roles for over 22 years of my life, I can assure you I am not the same leader today, that I was 20 years ago. The key for organizational success is to have people that want to be developed while developing others. Great leaders typically breed great leaders, and these successors are the future leadership of one's organization or the next. Dubrin (2016) stated that leadership development programs are widely practiced in a variety of ways across a variety of organizations. My research proved him right when comparing leadership programs from the healthcare, fire, and education industries. In this paper, I will explain how leaders develop through self–awareness and self–discipline. In addition, I will also discuss how leaders develop through education, experience, and mentoring, along classifying the nature of these leadership ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Two Approaches Of Leadership And Leadership Leaders throughout history have displayed many characteristics and traits which make them who they are, and influence the decisions they make. Whether or not the leader was born with these traits has never been scientifically proven. However, it is within human nature that we learn through trial and experience to improve our mental cognitive ability, and therefore leaders are, until proven otherwise, made not born. Whether a leader is born a leader, or made a leader is not relevant to the end result. What is relevant is if one of the two approaches of leadership produces a better leader. Leaders play a large role in society, and great leaders play a large role in history. Trying to hypothesise whether leaders are born or made is ironic, as by studying that topic, you are effectively helping to make future leaders. Leaders are crucial to the continuing development of the human race. Without leaders, the world would hardly change from when humans first inhabited it. Leaders inspire change, with goals and aims in place to further develop the human race. While not all leaders have the same ideology as others, they are still reaching to enhance the population. Leaders have been present throughout all history, and many have played a large role in how society operates today. Leaders usually show many similar characteristics to each other, and for this reason, many believe that a leader must have these same qualities or traits to be a successful leader. Of interest however, is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. The Great Man Theory Of Leadership The Great Man Theory of leadership dates back to the early 1900s where it was strongly believed that great leaders are born, not made. The basic premise of this theory has been contested since the inception of leadership study. While recent studies show some evidence to the contrary, the fundamental principle of the theory does retain some validity. The historian Thomas Carlyle coined the Great Man Theory as he argues the world's history is simply a collection of biographies belonging to great men (U, 2016). Although referred to as the Great Man Theory, the foundation of the theory is gender neutral. It has more recently been termed the Great Man/Great Woman Theory of leadership, removing the gender associated bias. The lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Executives, military leaders and senior government officials often possess a similar charisma that empowers them to lead effectively. Although they have all likely attended a slew of leadership seminars and workshops, there remains a certain x factor they all possess. To gain a worldwide perspective on the question born or made, the Center for Creative Leadership posed the question to executives spanning 53 countries. The results indicated a consensus to the contrary of the Great Man Theory. More than half, 53.4% of respondents believe that leaders are made, referred to as "Mades" while only 19.1% believe that they are born, "Borns". Interestingly, about a quarter of the executives surveyed, 28.5%, think leaders are both born and made. (Mascone, 2013) Analyzing further, a combined 47.6% think there is some validity to being born a leader. Thus, it proves difficult to arrive at a conclusion with empirical data in support of either theory. The survey expanded on various leadership topics in an effort to determine what Borns and Mades believe are important characteristics of leaders. Both Borns and Mades believe that leaders should be humane, charismatic, participative and team oriented. Borns are more likely to believe that following protocol and behaving in traditional ways in accordance with the status and position of a leader will make them more effective. ... • 77. Leaders Are Born Not Made LEADERS ARE BORN NOT MADE There have been an age long debate, and humans since beginning of time, have tried to come up with an answer to this question – Are Leaders born or are they made?. This question has generated an age long debate, which in turn has resulted in various school of thoughts, some believe that leaders are born, while others think otherwise. My contribution to this lifelong debate will serve as a pointer to my position on this issue. I strongly believe that leaders are born and not made. I believe creativity is one of the top qualities that born leaders posses, its the ability to tap into the subconscious to bring out great ideas. "Creative leaders have the ability to re–think their business models and come up with ideas to drastically change their enterprise". (Stephen 2011) Although Creativity is considered as one of the most prominent qualities that great leaders possess, another key innate ability is Confidence. Confidence is among the traits of great leaders, confidence cannot be taught; confidence for most great leaders is inborn. Francisco Dao in his article wrote– "Without Confidence there is no leadership; leadership is about having the confidence to make decisions. If someone is afraid to make and commit to decisions, all of the communication and empowerment in the world won't make a squat of difference". (Dao 2008) Another quality that great leaders are born with is Passion. Leaders always exhibit this quality in any area they find themselves. Being passionate about an idea, a project, a business is just learnt in the confines of the four walls of a classroom, it's a trait that is inborn. "Passionate leaders spread passion to others through their love of life, doing new things, taking risks, being motivated, having a sense of urgency, and reinventing ... • 79. Leaders Are Born Or Made? There is a well–known and often asked question on whether leaders are born or made. While the origin of the question is unknown, the answer in response to the question are numerous. On the other hand, management as it relates to the workplace is a relatively newer concept in that it became more visible in organizations around the time of the Industrial Revolution. The management needs of organizations since the Industrial Revolution still require regulation, order, and consistency. Many modern day organizations often use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
