This document provides information about the Palace of Children in Drobeta Turnu Severin, Romania and its subsidiary in Orșova. It discusses the region and counties of Romania where the clubs are located. It then describes the various educational and extracurricular activities offered at the clubs, including classes in electronics, robotics, programming, ballet, painting, and karting. Hundreds of students participate weekly. The clubs organize local, national, and international competitions in these areas. They publish an annual magazine about their work and have participated in disseminating the KAREL educational robotics project in Romania through various symposiums and meetings.

population of 110,000
Orşova with a
population around
13,000
7. TOURISTIC ATTRACTIONS IN MEHEDINŢI
There are many touristic attractions in
Mehedinti, most of them related to
Danube River.
Drobeta Turnu Severin was the
entrance gate in Romania for Romans,
thus there are many artifacts from
ancient time.
18. WHAT IS ORȘOVA SUBSIDIARY?
Filiala Orșova is a non-formal educational institution
funded from the State Budget. The activities
organized support and complete the school
education.
We have classes of electronics, robotics,
programming, carting, ballet, drama and painting.
Around 400 pupils, from 6 to 19 years, come
weekly at activities, 1 day per week for 2 hours,
after school.
Pupils participate in different contests in our
country. We also organize technical, scientific, and
artistic competitions.
34. SCRATCH INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMING CONTEST

42. WE HOPE THAT THE KAREL PROJECT
WILL HELP US TO KNOW EACH OTHER
BETTER.
EVEN IF WON’T BE EASY, I THINK THAT
WE WILL SUCCEED TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT
WE’VE PROPOSED TO DO IN THIS
PROJECT.
Thank You For Watching!
Editor's Notes
Romania is divided in eight development regions which were created in 1998 in order to better coordinate regional development as Romania progressed toward accession to the European Union.
We are from South West Oltenia Development Region.
This is composed of 5 counties named: Dolj, Gorj, Mehedinţi, Olt, and Vâlcea
We are from Mehedinti county.
Next I will present our country.
Mehedinţi is a county of Romania, in the historical provinces of Oltenia (mostly) and Banat (a little part in the west).
The county seat is Drobeta-Turnu Severin.
Mehedinti county has two Municipalities:
Drobeta-Turnu Severin - capital city with a population of 110,000
Orşova with a population around 13,000
The Iron Gates is a gorge on the Danube River.
The gorge lies between Romania in the north and Serbia in the south.
Decebal was Scorillo's son and occupied the throne of Dacia in period 87 – 106, in a time when Roman Empire dominated the Europe.
The historian Dio Cassius described Decebal in this way:
"He was very skillful and clever in the act of war, knowing how to choose the occasion to attack the enemy to retreat in time. Can in the traps, was brave in battle, knowing how to use a victory and prowess to escape safely from a defeat, for the things he has long been one of the Romans feared hostile.
Roman emperor Traian built a legendary bridge designed by Apollodor of Damasc.
Construction of the bridge ran from 103 to 105, preceding Traian's conquest of Dacia
Tabula Traiana is on the Serbian side, near Cazanele Mici.
Tabula is set in a stone in which are represented two floating dolphins and an eagle in the sky.
Tabula Traiana was built by Romans, to commemorate the obstacles faced by the Roman army crossing the Danube in 101 AC.
Capital of the Mehedinţi County, Oltenia, Romania
Situated on the left bank of the Danube, below the Iron Gates
The city, which was called Drobeta by the Romans, took its name of Turnu Severin (meaning the Tower of Severus) from a tower on the north bank of the Danube built by the Byzantines.
Palatul Copiilor Drobeta Turnu Severin (The Palace of Chidren Drobeta Turnu Severin) is a non-formal educational institution funded
from the State Budget. The institution has 4 subsidiaries in 4 towns of Mehedinti County: Orsova, Strehaia, Vanju Mare and Baia de
Arama. There are organized different types of classes like: technical, scientific, artistic and sportive. The pupils aged 6 to 19, come
weekly at activities, once a week for 2 hours, after school or in weekend.
Orşova is a port city on the Danube river, in southwestern Romania's Mehedinţi County, part of the Banat historical region. It is situated just above the Iron Gates, on the spot where the Cerna River meets the Danube.
During the works at the Iron Gates, the old center of the town was flooded and Orşova was developed (1966–1971) on higher ground. Water level has increased by 36 meters.
Monastery of Saint Ann is on Dealu Mosul, a place which offers a unique panorama of town.
The monastery was founded by the journalist who fought here Pamfil Seicaru, lieutenant in World War I. He wanted to express gratitude to God because he remained alive after being buried here by the explosion of a bomb.
For his courage, Pamfil Șeicaru was granted the title of Cavaler al Ordinului Mihai Viteazul (Knight of the Order of Michael the Brave).
The Catholic Church is considered an architectural masterpiece of the twentieth century.
The church is considered a bridge between ethnics which lives in Orsova (German, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian).
Church is unique in Europe, its specific elements being tent shaped interior and cross-shaped roof.
Filiala Orsova is situated in the center of the town, near Catholic Curch.
Next, I will show you some pictures from our activities.
One picture worth one thousand words.
Conexiuni (in English Connexions) is the name of the Electronics Club / Circle. Also is the name of the magazine we publish.
We learn to design PCB’s (Printed Circuits Boards).
We learn how to use breadboards to make experiments.
We learn to make PCB’s (Printed Circuits Boards) and populate with electronic components.
Example of Electronics Boards made at Electronics classes.
From 2007 we started to design and build robots. From 2008 we organize an (inter)national robotics contest named ROBOTOR.
Few years ago we started to learn to program in Scratch, a programming language developed at MIT.
As you can see, this is very funny.
We publish CONEXIUNI (Connexions in English), an annual magazine about electronics, programming and robotics.
The pictures on the last page have been taken with occasion of RECAP project meeting organized in Beypazari in 2011.
We organized the first Romanian Robotics Trophy for undergraduate level, ROBOTOR. First edition was held in 2008.
2013 edition was organized at Botosani in cooperation with Palatul Copiilor Botosani. The 2014 edition will be also organized in Botosani.
Robotor 2015 will be organized in Orsova, during the KAREL project closing meeting.
Here we are with our robots at National Robotics Trophy ROBOTOR 2013.
We participate in local, regional and national contests.
We participate in programming contest. We also organize a Scratch programming contest, named SCRIPT.
You can see here the gallery of winning project in 2013 edition.
We hope that SCRIPT 2014 will be international. SCRATCH = SCRatch International Programming Trial.
Mr. Mihai Agape presented KAREL project in the ROBOTOR 2013 Symposium.
Pupils and teachers who participated in this event agreed that the KAREL platform will contribute to the development of robotics in Romania.
Ms. Maria Agape presented KAREL project in the “Performance through Nonformal Activities” National Symposium held on February 3, 2014 in Drobeta Turnu Severin.

Ms. Maria Agape presented KAREL project in the “Performance through Nonformal Activities” National Symposium held on February 3, 2014 in Drobeta Turnu Severin.
There are many things we didn’t say about us, but we will have the opportunity to know each other better, starting right in this project meeting.
