The Alarm Clock That Opens Richard Wright
The alarm clock that opens Richard Wright's 1940 classic Native Son was not only a wakeup call to
the nation, but to the American Communist Party: an institution that Wright supported, despite its
own shortcomings in advocating for the rights of Black Americans. Throughout the novel, Wright
depicts Communist Party members Jan Erlone and Boris Max, as well as sympathiser Mary Dalton
as individuals that care on some level for Bigger, but their efforts are misguided. Jan and Mary, who
both advocate for racial equality, are oblivious of Bigger's feelings throughout Book One. The
Communist Party is unable to prevent Bigger from being executed. In the final portion of the novel,
Bigger's revelation and state of inner peace does not come from the party's failed attempts to save
him Instead, Wright places that agency with the individual, albeit with some help from liberal
whites. Max, who represents Bigger during the murder trial, rejects Bigger's self–realization. Wright
suggests that battles with the outside world can be engaged, Black Americans must deal with the
internal struggles they face. The Communist Party is a well–intentioned organization with the fatal
flaw that its liberal white members will never be able to relate to Bigger and other Black Americans
or the realities they face daily. Early in the work, Wright establishes the American Communist Party
as a concerned and idealistic organization unable to work within the circumscribed realities of Black
life. Literature

The Irony of the Jungle
The Irony of The Jungle
Between 1870 and 1900 Chicago grew from a population of 299,000 to almost 1.7 million, the
fastest–growing city ever at the time. This surge in population was largely attributed to immigrants
coming from European countries seeking a chance for employment and new freedoms associated
with moving to the United States at the time. 1905, in particular, was a historic year when a surge of
over 1 million immigrants came to the city. During this time, author Upton Sinclair was working
undercover, investigating working conditions in the city's meatpacking district. Sinclair's research
was integrated into his novel The Jungle, a tragic story about a group of immigrants from Lithuania
led by Jurgis, the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the injury was caused by leaping out of the way from out–of–control cattle, the company
declares Jurgis' injury to be his own fault. Forced to rest at home with no means to earn money
while other strong–bodied men replace him, the bank eventually forecloses on his home, only to
resell to another eager family that shared Jurgis' optimism. Realizing this truth, Jurgis' father
Anatanas is just as resolute to help provide for the family. He takes up a job in a pickling–basement
with poor air quality and contact with poisonous chemicals, which ultimately leads to his death.
Lack of sympathy is a common theme which helps Sinclair paint the picture of an unforgiving
environment, where people come and go, processed much like cattle. Sinclair's title is appropriate
given the ways people are treated when an accident happens. Similar tragic fates befall the rest of
Jurgis' extended family that enter work in the meatpacking district. Realizing their home will be
increasingly difficult to afford when deciding to have a child with Jurgis, Ona must work in the
meatpacking district. If a strong man like Jurgis can be broken by the working and living conditions,
it is no surprise that Ona is also broken by the system, being raped by her boss and unable to do
anything about it because of his favor with politicians and lawmen. "Ona's account of her rape tells

The Pros And Cons Of The Red Scare
In the mid 1940's America faced a kind of fear that many viewed at the time to be easily justified.
The "Red Scare" effected many people and ruined many lives during this time. During the red scare
people were black listed in Hollywood and were prevented from finding work. This is because the
"Red Scare" was a point in time where there was widespread fear and government paranoia by a
society or state, about a potential rise of communism, anarchism, or radical leftism. The black list
came around from the idea that communists were trying to use Hollywood to influence the minds of
the people and turn American citizens in to spies for the Russians. This was no easy time for many
Americans, people not only abused whomever they didn't trust by creating claims that that they were
communist with or without evidence. The first Hollywood blacklist was created on November 25,
1947. This was the day after ten writers and directors were cited for contempt of Congress for
refusing to testify to the House Un–American Activities Committee. The writer Dolton Trumbo was
one of the individuals black listed and was sent to prison. The movie incarnation of the book about
events of his life some think was a well depiction of his person and life. The book however,
containing more detail and seemingly brutal honest documented events differ from the movie. These
differences bring into question what are motivations, the changes to the store; and for what purpose.

The Jungle Chapter Summary
What is the hidden purpose of the subway system which Jurgis helps to construct? The hidden
purpose of the subway system which Jurgis helps to construct is to break the teamsters' union.
Because Jurgis got hit by one of the rail freight cars, he broke his arm and lost his job. 2. Find a
passage in this chapter illustrating Jurgis' opinion of the evangelists who preach to the poor. Which
theme(s) does Jurgis' opinion of the evangelists illustrate? "The evangelist was preaching 'sin and
redemption,' the infinite grace of God and His pardon for human frailty. He was very much in
earnest, and he meant well, but Jurgis, as he listened, found his soul filled with hatred. What did he

At this point in the story, Jurgis viewed that there is no place for him in this world. 2. Why might
some readers find this chapter easier and more interesting to read than many of the other chapters in
the story? Since Upton Sinclair illustrate the life of an affluent family like the Jones, this chapter is
easier and more interesting to read than many of the other chapters in the story. In this chapter, the
Jones' family lived in luxurious castle with butlers and servants unlike previous chapters where
Sinclair described the struggles of the factory workers. 3. Many critics believe this scene is written
to delight Sinclair's socialist friends. At the time it was written, readers would have easily
recognized that the butler is named after Alexander Hamilton, who was Secretary of the Treasury,
and that the dog is named after Admiral Dewey, who fought in the Spanish American War. Sinclair
and the other socialists would have considered these two men to be perpetrators of the capitalist
system, and ridiculing them in this scene would have been very amusing. Besides providing his
readers with an amusing scene, what does Sinclair reveal about the changes in Jurgis' character
during this chapter? During this chapter, Sinclair reveal that capitalism bought out the worst in
people especially Jurgis. After Jurgis migrate to America, he became an alcoholic, a violent and an

Why Did the Communist Gain Power in 1949 in China?
Why did the Communists gain power in 1949?
In 1949, after a long lasting contest for leadership, the Communists were able to gain power. In
1900, China was ruled by the Manchu dynasty, however less than in half a century a completely new
government came into power. The Qing government had already been weak due to European
countries because they gained great influence in China's affair by using forces. They became so
unpopular that people plotted to overthrow them. Despite the fact that the revolution of 1911 failed
to overthrow them, it made the government collapse. People needed changes. But none of the
leadership or the Party government could achieve what they promised in order to make the lives of
people better in China. The Communist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And even the Japanese operation against the Communists had opposite effect, because Three All
Campaign's aimed at turning people against the Communists by burning down their villages and
crops, murdering the peasants made the peasants hate the Japanese even more and help the
Communists attack them. The Japan–China war was a great success of the Communists because, by
1945, they controlled eighteen 'liberation areas' in the countryside. Invariably it was the Reds to
whom the Japanese submitted.
However, after the Japanese retreat, the Communists and the Guomindang raced for control the
areas that Japan had occupied. The USA became involved, because the US did not want the
Communists to win control of China. They supported Guomindang troops to seize most other
coastal cities and ports. The USA did not want to renew the civil war, therefore send General George
C. Marshall to bring the two sides together in December 1945. He managed to sing a truce between
them but it broke down in early 1946. The Civil War started. Guomindang seemed stronger because
their military power was helped by America. Chiang Kai–shek was recognised as the true leader of
China. Communists were not in good position, because they did not have air force and navy, they
had few railways and they only had an army of 1 million men. It seemed really weak; they did not

just one attraction. To fully explore what makes this city so distinguished, we must examine the
environment, education system, social Services, arts miscellaneous items and why I love this city.
After learning more about this city, one will truly understand why some call this city "High Bridge

Tiananmen Square Incident(1989)
The monstrous event that happened on June 4th, 1989 will be forever remembered as one of the
most tragic days in human history. However, many decades ago, this event was foreseen and was
foretold in the book, 1984, by George Orwell. Orwell saw the rise of totalitarianism, and he was
deeply disturbed by what he saw. He believes totalitarianism will be the method that communist
party adopts to fight freedom. The book foreshadows many of the events that will happen in a
communist society. In many ways, the incident of Tiananmen Square in 1989 echoes 1984, which is
a warning that totalitarian government is a power abuser, propaganda manipulator, and democracy

Upton Sinclair was an American writer whose works reverts not only the inside but also the
socialists view on things. Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was born into a
family which held to its Southern aristocracy in everything that was done. When Sinclair was ten
years old, the family packed up and moved to New York City as there were more opportunities to
succeed. The Jungle is both a judgment on and a profit of its own times. Those times most precise

mainly about the U.S. labor movement and the histories of similar communist parties worldwide.
The CPUSA had a huge impact on the civil rights movement. It is known to have brought racial
equality to the south. Senator Joseph McCarthy began hearings investigating the United States
Army, which he charges with being "soft" on communism. These televised hearings gave the

Biography of Mao Zedong
INTRODUCTION
Born on December 26, 1893, Mao Zedong was the founding leader of the People's Republic of
China and ruled as the Chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1949 up until he died on
September the 9th, 1976. He is largely accredited with crafting the post–revolution policies known
as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution (Joseph, 1986) which have left many critics
arguing that the political and economic devastation those policies left are what define his legacy.
Mao Zedong however, left a legacy that far outweighs the aforementioned argument.
How Mao improved CHINA internally
Mao Zedong's most central passion was his insistence in the empowerment of the peasants. Once
Mao Zedong ascended to leadership, land reform became the principal feature of the "Chinese
Communist Party line" (Chang, 2014). In 1950 he oversaw the implemented the Agrarian Reform
Law (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014) which gave the land to the peasants, and authorised 'people's
courts' to try their former landlords. Subsequently, the agrarian reform re–assigned more than half
the land to the peasants meaning that 300 million peasants were effectively given 47 million
hectares of land.
Additionally, Mao empowered peasants by giving jobs to peasants from the countryside and
prioritising them in the industrialisation process which led to the dramatic reduction in the
unemployment levels and introduction of insurance for workers.
Under Chairman Mao, the public healthcare system

Why should our elementary school children study history?
There is no doubt that the primary purpose of schooling is to prepare students to function effectively
in the world, and thereby to assist society to function effectively as well. We study the past in school
not because students need to know a collection of old facts, but because history helps them
understand how the world works and how human beings behave. Knowledge of the past is required
for understanding present realities. When people share some common knowledge of history, they
can discuss their understandings with one another.

of Communism as well as other non–traditional beliefs causing herself to be blacklisted by the
House Committee on Un–American Activities. She was born in an affluent, Jewish family on June

bankers and liquor dealers, while her father, Max Hellman, was a lucrative shoe salesman. She
attended New York University for two years after graduating from high school then transferred to

advocated for a form of socialism. However, Hellman immediately returned to the United States
after being pressed about her Jewish heritage. She became a short–term member of the Communist
Party from 1938 to 1940 in America. However, Hellman drifted away from the Communist Party
because it seemed to be the wrong place for her. She described her "own maverick nature [to be] no

Helen Keller Accomplishments
At the age of 19 months Helen became sick and lost her sight and hearing. When she started to grow

express herself. But then came along Anne Sullivan who taught Helen sign language and her how
world opened up from there. She went on to do great things. From her achievements and speeches
toward the disabled community. Helen Keller made a lasting impact on the world. Another thing to

braille and write in English, Latin, French, Italian, Greek, and German. Also Helen was able to
utilize on a Braille writer and a typewriter. Along with all that she found a teacher, Sarah Fuller, to

She was a remarkable woman. Helen Keller was only able to accomplish this because of her
unwavering determination. Helen Keller made many great accomplishments in the time she was

Essay An Analysis Of The Jungle By Upton Sinclair
In the early 1900's life for America's new Chicago immigrant workers in the meat packing industry
was explored by Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle. Originally published in 1904 as a serial piece in
the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, Sinclair's novel was initially found too graphic and
shocking by publishing firms and therefore was not published in its complete form until 1906. In
this paper, I will focus on the challenges faced by a newly immigrated worker and on what I feel
Sinclair's purpose was for this novel. In the early 1900's a newly arrived immigrant worker faced
numerous challenges that had to be overcome. Often times literally arriving with the clothes on their
back and a few meager dollars, it was crucial for these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While not all of these examples have a direct monetary impact, each of the dealings associated with
them does which in turn motivates the parties involved to make decisions and perform actions
outside the normal scope for their character. The third challenge faced by new immigrants was
acquiring and then keeping steady work. Although the Packingtown in Chicago was in a constant
state of activity, the sheer number of available workers and the rule of supply and demand made it
difficult for some to find work. It was not uncommon for some workers to stand at the plant doors
for weeks before being selected. And once a person was chosen to be a worker, they had to labor at a
fever pitch to make sure they were retained. That being said, the worker's problems did not end once
they found steady employment. Employers were harsh and unforgiving in how they treated their
employees. For example, if an employee was one minute late they were penalized an hours pay. If
they were 20 minutes late they forfeited their employment. Worse yet, if they were injured or hurt on
the job the company takes no responsibility and the worker is forced to recuperate on their own time
without pay

Examples Of Liberalism In 1984
The heavy political climate in America's recent years has sparked an increase in popularity of
George Orwell's novel 1984. Not only is there controversy as to what Orwell depicts in the novel,
but there is also confusion and debate as to what we are seeing in our developing world presently.
While it is easy to hold strong beliefs on each end of the spectrum, it is necessary to take into
account what we can gain from both sides rather than limiting ourselves to one or the other. The
articles provided give two very different perspectives on the book, but what they have in common is
extremity. This novel was without a doubt intentionally written with an underlying message of
extremity in terms of conservatism and liberalism. I strongly believe that Orwell wrote 1984 with
both ends of the spectrum in mind to depict a world of radicalism in which chaos and absurdities are
ever so present. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is an extreme reminder that complete faith in government leads to blindness that strips each
individual of humanity and freedom. Nathan Schlueter– author of "The True Lessons of 1984",
defends his conservative viewpoint through evidence found in the novel. Oceania's food rations,
totalitarian rule, and propaganda are prime examples of socialism in 1984. At one point in the novel,
O'Brien, "the voice of the socialist party," speaks to Winston about the future of society in Oceania.
He states that the primary goal will be to eliminate human experience. He explains to Winston:
"Never will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or
courage, or integrity." Ultimately the purpose of all this would to give control and power to Big
Brother which is a primary sentiment of socialist totalitarianism. 1984 illustrates the worst of
socialism and I think that it is crucial to learn from

Essay on Uptian Sinclair And Socialism
Upton Sinclair and Socialism
Socialism has always been hard for me to understand. I never really grasped the concept of it until I
read the book The Jungle and began to research for this paper. Before I begin I would like to go
through a condensed version of the history of Socialism. It was founded in 1901 in Indianapolis,
Indiana. Two groups came together to form the Socialists, the Social Democratic Party and the
"Kangaroo" wing of the older Socialist Labor Party. These parties contained mostly immigrant
workers from big cities (Jurgis from The Jungle was one such fictional worker). The new party
expanded and included every type of extremist. They stood on the motto of "reform vs. revolution"
and focused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1960 the book The Other America was published by
Michael Harrington. This book took great favor within the Socialist
Party. The left wing Socialists were beginning to die out and in 1968 the right wing Socialists held
the majority of the members. Over the next years many splits, divisions and merging occurred under
the control of the right wing Socialists and in 1982 the party was renamed the Democratic Socialists
of America. The only state to have a
Socialist ballot is the Socialist Party of Oregon, which formed in 1994.
This is how it remains today.
In the beginning I read Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle in order to gain entrance into the
Advanced Placement English class. The things I learned about Socialism, the meat–packing industry
and
Sinclair's own views lead me to discover a new era of writers I didn't know existed. These writers
brought to the attention of the nation problems that were carefully shielded from the public's eyes.
Many of these authors such as Upton Sinclair, Jack London, Ida Tarbell and many others took a
particularly Socialistic view and this was expressed in their writing. A few of the books that Sinclair
wrote had an especially socialistic tone, such as The Jungle which was published in 1906.
Conflictive to most people's beliefs The Jungle was not written to reform the meat–packing industry
and incite pure food acts.
He stated, "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the

China's Cultural Revolution
Introduction
Genocide is the intentional carnage of a large group of people usually due to a particular religion or
ethnicity. China's Cultural Revolution lasted from 1966 until 1976 and dealt with Mao Zedong, the
chairman of the Communist Party of China, wanting to realm the true communists. Both Night and
China's Cultural Revolution had to do with a dominant, political figure seeking the flawless race. In
Night, numerous races not considered German or Aryan were slayed such as the Jews, Hungarians,
Russians, and French, on the other hand, China's Cultural Revolution mainly allocated with only the
Chinese race. In order to preclude future genocides or war crimes from happening, countries can
make written pacts with penalties to anyone that disrupts the rubrics, let all citizens have a part in
government and verdict making, and resolve any and all conflicts that arise.
Causes
In China's Cultural Revolution, many causes added to the genocide taking place. A vast majority of
the causes had to do with political complications between Mao Zedong and other political figures.
For instance, Mao didn't like any ideologies that went in contradiction of communism (Lamb 1). He
also didn't like anyone opposing him, gaining popularity (Li 2). Since Mao became so close minded
on his beliefs, it led him to accept as true that only certain people, those who shared his views on
communism, be worthy of life. This

My Life
Many years ago, when I was still a child, my mother would bring me to the Henan province on New
Year 's Eve. Every year, my mother would bring me door–to–door to visit my relatives to greet them
and to give them gifts. I would always get excited that I would be able to visit my prosthetic legged
uncle, "iron man". One night I asked him, "Uncle, why do you have a metal leg, and how do I get a
metal leg like yours?" My uncle turned his head away from me, and said, "I 'll tell you one day,
maybe when you get older."
Even though I was young, I still had the feeling that something was being hidden from me. A few
years later, I asked him same question. This time, he grinned, and looked at my mother. She gently
nodded her head, and my uncle turned his head back towards me and said, "Kennedy, I think it is
time that I tell you."
He continued, "In 1989, I was a college student at Tsinghua University, at the time the communist
government ruled China. During this time, the government was corrupt down to its core; almost all
officials in the government had were forced to submit to the leader of the Communist Party. It was a
pure dictatorship meaning the dictator had power and anyone who didn 't comply was punished with
prison or death. The tension during this time was surreal, growing day to day. Eventually on April
15, 1989, the Communist Party leader finally passed away, and the dam holding back the high
waters of tension broke into crumbs.

Advantages Of The Gilded Age
Ever look at all the railroads and big manufacturing companies and think where could something so
big be started? Well the gilded age is highly responsible for these manufactures and creation of
railroads. The Gilded Age took place 1869–1901 in the United States giving a whole new
perspective, in 1877 to 1893 the economy nearly doubled. The Gilded Age took place in between
Civil War and the World War 1 where the US economy grew drastically resulting in lots of political
corruption. The Progressive Movement went along with the Gilded Age becoming popular among
the well educated and environmental friendly peers. Not everything was perfect during this time due
to many factors including unfair workers rights preventing many from obtaining a higher power then
one deserves. Fair workers rights was not only extinct during this time but many except a few
formers including Florence Kelley and Eugene V. Debs encouraged themselves to make a change for
the better. America before the Gilded Age wasn't an unsuccessful country but was far from its ...

Buddhism continued to grow and the pure land Buddhism became the religion of Chinese society.
Pure land Buddhism grew in strength under Hui Yan and the immortal concept run through the ritual

Confucianism in which the 3 religious philosophies' became one religious thought of the Chinese
people. Chan, (1957)
From the 20th century onward modernity played a big part in the religion of China, political agendas

time coincided with capitalism, and the economy of china in which modernity plays the central role

Tillie Olsen : I Stand Here Ironing
Tillie Olsen: "I Stand Here Ironing" Tillie Olsen is acknowledged as one of the most important
writers in American literature. Even though her reputation was built on a small body of work, Olsen
is recognized for her skill as a storyteller, and her determination to give hope to people of different
races, genders, or classes. Olsen's most famous short story, "I Stand Here Ironing," is known for its
adverse symbols, point of view, and themes. Tillie Olsen was born in Omaha, Nebraska on January
14, 1914 (Britannica). She was a lively and precocious child who charmed her parents with her wit
and talent, but her wild and rebellious behavior was beyond their control (Web). While in high
school, Olsen gained popularity by writing a humor column in the high school paper. However,
Olsen dropped out of school soon after (Web). Olsen's adult life was no less full of both exuberance
and despair (Web). In 1930 she joined the Young Communist League, also known as YCL. With the
disapproval of her parents, she married Abraham Jevons Goldfarb. Under the YCL, Olsen wrote,
organized, and participated in strikes (Web). When she fell ill, she was released from the YCL.
During her break, Olsen began to write. She typically wrote of families struggling to meet ends meet

Abortion Argumentative Analysis
Abortion is a touchy topic that everyone tries to avoid but will create heated arguments when it is
brought up. In different cultures and historical times, abortion has been viewed in a variety of
perspectives, with two opposing sides equally stubborn on the morality and rightness of their
positions. One side of the argument defends women by supporting the right for a woman to have
control over her body. The other side argues it is murder to have a woman decide the fate of another
defenseless human. The pro choice and pro life debate, however, should not be looked at in a black
and white perspective, and each situation should be analyzed individually. From assessing two
different films, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and A Woman Alone, one can ... Show more content

their food. Otilia and Gabita agree to not discuss the abortion and events that happened to them the
past few days. This is a sign of cognitive dissonance, which is when one's mental state, thought, and
attitude do not align with one's behavior causing anxiety. Results in Adler's article show that women
who do not receive support, and therefore may delay getting an abortion, are subject to greater stress
compared to women who do perceive support from parents and male partners (Adler 42).
Unfortunately, Gabita cannot rely on her parents or her male partner. She only has Otilia who steps
in to loan her money, but with such little support, Adler would conjointly conclude Gabita's
experience is highly psychologically stressful. Additionally, Gabita is raped by the "doctor," which
adds to her psychological conflict. She needs an abortion; however, afterwards, she wants to repress

Ramifications Of War Analysis
When the nation faces crisis, it is easy for a politician to bury his principles and stand with the
majority. Thus, as the country prepares to enter a foreign conflict, many choose to support war for
fear of what the ramifications of a different path might be: condemnation, accusations of treachery,
and losing reelection. In 1917, as the United States entered the war in Europe, Congressman Meyer
London of New York chose the fearsome alternative, standing by his convictions and opposing the
war. In doing so, London incurred vitriol and criticism from those who supported the war. Likewise,
London earned attacks from his own Socialist Party when he refused to obstruct the war effort,

the renomination of his party due to his unpopularity with anti–war Socialists ("Socialists accept").
When he secured renomination, he faced powerful opposition to his candidacy. The National
Security League, a pro–war lobby, "secured the cooperation of the Republicans and Democrats" in

Strengths And Weaknesses In China
China and Japan are both countries with different strengths and weaknesses. China's economic
problems may not be the same as Japan's. Each country follows the principles of their own
economic system, which means different problems will arise.
In recent years, China has surpassed USA as the world's largest merchandise trader. Their exports
and imports combined was worth up to $4 billion USD. They are importing huge quantities of raw
materials, and exporting huge quantities of manufactured goods. Although China's economy has
been growing slower than others, it remains as one of the largest contributors to world GDP growth.
One of the main causes to China's slow GDP growth is their overinvestments. In 2015, investments
made up 43.3% of China's GDP, while household consumptions only made up 38%. The imbalance
between these two has widened China's debt. Keeping up with high levels of investments require a
lot of credit, causing China's debt to grow to over 250% today. A couple of years ago, China started
to heavily invest in steel. The Chinese government encouraged the investment because steel was
used in automobiles and infrastructure, and the demand was high. China became one of the world's
largest steel producer, and holder of spare capacity. However, in recent years, the demand for steel
has declined. China was left struggling with declining demand, overcapacity, and a growing debt
because of a tight credit. China has been cutting down excess steel capacity. More than 65

Evolution of Power Distance in Russia
The Evolution of Power Distance in Russia
Several authors such as Hofstede, Shwarz and Trompenaars investigated the characteristics of power
distribution in different societies, each with their own accents. Hofstede uses the criteria of power
distance. It describes to what extend a countries population accepts that power in organisations and
institutions is unquelly divided. In other words ; is the power distribution mainly based on vertical
or horizontal relationships? (Nardon & Steers, 2006 ; Robins, Judge & Campbell, 2011)
In countries with a high Power Distance Index (PDI) the population seems to accept that there is a
high inequality of power distribution. The use of that power is not necessarily abussive. The ... Show

More recent studies show a strong decrease of Russia's PDI. Naumov & Puffer estimated
Russia's PDI to be only 40 points in 2000, which puts the country close to the average and next to
developed countries such as the Netherlands (38), Canada (39) and the USA (40). Veiga, Yanouzaz
and Buchholtz confirmed that power distance in Russia dropped significantly after the perestrojka
was announced. Two of the main reasons for the decrease might be attributed to the economic en
political decentralisation following the post–communist reforms and the privatisation of economic
power that led to a separation of the lather (Naumov & Puffer, 2000). It should be stressed that
a high PDI seems somewhat typical for communist countries. Russia had a significantly higher
power distance acceptance in earlier studies when it recently had experienced the communist
regime. China, also a country with communist roots, scores quite highly on the power distance
index. Now that both countries take a more market–oriented approach, the PDI is dropping. This is
quite surprising in a certain point of view : Wasn't it Marx's goal to create an equal society grid for
the whole population? This result illustrates the gap between theory and practice that's inherent to
the communist policy. (Fernandez, Carlson, Stepina & Nicholson, 1997).

Socialism in The Jungle Essay
Socialism in The Jungle
The Rudkus family arrived from Lithuania to find Chicago as "a city in which justice and honor,
women's bodies and men's souls, were for sale in the marketplace, and human beings writhed and
fought and fell upon each other like wolves in the pit, in which lusts were raging fires, and men
were fuel, and humanity was festering and stewing and wallowing in its own corruption." (Pg.165)
The city, during the time span of the novel, was truly a jungle–like society in which Upton Sinclair
found much fault and great room for improvement. Sinclair perceived the problem in American
society to be the reign of capitalism. In The Jungle, he presented the reader with the Rudkus family;

responsibility for workplace accidents. Jurgis and his family were faced with many predicaments
related to these poor surroundings and circumstances. The family hastily saw that they must enter
the competition forced upon them in a social Darwinist fashion. When he first arrived in
Packingtown, Jurgis found work quickly in the meat packing industry because of his strong, young
stature. As the years went by, however, and he grew plagued with injuries and financial troubles,
Jurgis found work to be evermore difficult to obtain and hold. The social system cracked down on
the family and offered nowhere for the Rudkus' to turn for help.
Not only did the family stumble upon difficulties in their workplaces, but in basic living conditions
as well. Jurgis and his family witnessed such atrocities, as baby Antanas tragically drowning in the
unpaved roads, devastating financial loss through misinformation concerning the purchase and
custody of their house, and unsanitary meat packed and sold for regular consumption.
Such incredible pandemonium was involved with virtually all of the Rudkus family's daily activities
and never ceased to cause anxiety and worry in their overburdened lives. This desolation drove
family members to radical attempts at survival and hope for some means of liberation from their
atrocious new lives in America. At

Upton Sinclair and the Chicago Meat–packing Industry
In 1900, there were over 1.6 million people living in Chicago, the country's second largest city. Of
those 1.6 million, nearly 30% were immigrants. Most immigrants came to the United States with
little or no money at all, in hope of making a better life for themselves. A city like Chicago offered
these people jobs that required no skill. However, the working and living conditions were hazardous
and the pay was barely enough to survive on. This is the bases for Upton Sinclair's book, The
Jungle. Sinclair agreed to "investigate working conditions in Chicago's meatpacking plants," for the
Socialist journal, Appeal to Reason, in 1904. The Jungle, published in 1906, is ... Show more

They needed help from the government and local community. In other words, "machine politics."
Politicians played an important role in the political machine. In order to maintain this role, they
received substantial kickbacks from the owners of the factories. They would recruit people to help
the immigrants become citizens of the United States, and then pay the immigrants to vote for a
specific candidate, often several times. Before the Progressive Party materialized, there were just the
Democrats and the Republicans, "and the one got the office which bought the most votes." Readers
were not concerned with the treatment of workers, as portrayed by The Jungle, because they really
didn't care for the working class, or more specifically, immigrants. However, readers were shocked
when they discovered exactly how their meat was processed and prepared. Sinclair used just as
much, if not more, gruesome detail in describing the products the American public was consuming,
as he did when describing the workplace, living conditions, politics, society and Chicago's scenery.
In a futile attempt to build up the readers' sympathy toward the wage–slaves, Sinclair also details the
process in which foods not related to the meat–packing industry are prepared. For example, he
writes, "their pale blue milk...was watered, and doctored with formaldehyde." The controversy over

The difficulty of finding a job in Packingtown was hard enough. The characters also had to walk to

This process began with Mao encouraging peasants to rebel against their landlords through the
'speak bitterness campaign', which allowed for the redistribution of land to the proletariat. However,
individual land ownership was not truly communist; thus followed the gradual transition to farming
collectives, and finally centralised communes in 1958, where land ownership was abolished. In
addition to land reform, there were campaigns of mass suppression targeting counter–
revolutionaries. Following the elimination of the landlord class, Mao began two movements aimed
at corruption and enemies of the state, known as the 3–anti and 5–anti campaigns. The 3–anti
campaign (1951), aimed at bureaucracy and waste, was succeeded by the 5–anti campaign (1952),
which was aimed at theft, cheating, bribery and tax evasion. The result was an atmosphere of fear
and suspicion, which served to strengthen Mao's power base. In addition to creating a communist
society, Mao wished to strengthen and develop China's economy, although his level of success in
this area is debatable. Immediately after victory in 1949, Mao began to nationalise and centralise all

The Communist Party USA is a minor party of the U.S. that is the largest communist party found
within the country. In 1919, the Left Wing Caucus of the Socialist Party made plans of regaining
control of the Socialist Party of America by carrying on an active campaign to win a majority of the
party's governing National Executive Committee. Delegations were sent from the sections of the
party that had been expelled to the emergency convention of August 30, 1919 to demand that they

Essay on An Analysis of the Jungle by Upton Sinclair

While not all of these examples have a direct monetary impact, each of the dealings associated with
them does which in turn motivates the parties involved to make decisions and perform actions

acquiring and then keeping steady work.
Worse yet, if they were injured or hurt on
the job the company takes no responsibility and the worker is forced to recuperate on their own time
without pay (i.e.; when Jurgis sprained his ankle and had to recuperate at home for 3 months). The
final insult to the workers was that even if they were always on time, worked hard and maintained

ethic or spirit; he merely falls victim to a system in which those at the top succeed with abundance
at the severe expense of those left with nothing at the bottom. The book's author, Upton Sinclair,
sought to show America the cost of its capitalist system. Born into a poor family with wealthy
relatives, Sinclair was aware of social and economic disparity in America from a young age (The
Jungle v). The Jungle is the result of Upton Sinclair working undercover for seven weeks in
Chicago's meatpacking industry in 1904, as well as the socialist ... Show more content on

These early moments of jubilee in the book provide a very effective contrast to the book's main
themes of human misery and powerlessness as the life of Jurgis falls apart piece by piece.
Following this wedding sequence the book catches its readers up on the status of Jurgis and the rest
during the six months prior. A man of strong build, it did not take long for Jurgis to find work in the
Chicago stockyards sweeping cow entrails into waste chutes on the killing floors of Brown's
slaughterhouse. The mechanics of the slaughterhouse are communicated with vivid detail – so much
so that it is no wonder they became the primary subject readers latched onto when the book
originally released. Among the most interesting slaughterhouse descriptions which Sinclair provides
is that of the concept of "speeding up", in which workers in certain positions at the slaughterhouse
are trained and paid more to work faster in order to set the pace of the slaughterhouse's disassembly
machine and achieve a higher output. This exemplifies one of Sinclair's issues with capitalism. In a
capitalist society, the poor are kept in need, which makes them exploitable. Because there were
many unemployed people looking for work at the stockyards at any given time, not performing at
the dangerous pace set by others often meant giving up your job to someone more capable of or
willing to

Essay on The American Dream in The Jungle by Upton...
Muckraking, "to search for and expose real or alleged corruption, scandal, or the like, especially in
politics" (dictionary.com). Upton Sinclair gained fame in the early 1900's from his muckraking
novel, The Jungle, describing the life of a young Lithuanian immigrant, Jurgis, living in Chicago in
pursuit of the American dream. Jurgis found out that America isn't as good as it appeared; with
higher wages came more expensive goods, and with cheaper houses came higher interest rates. The
Jungle, a fictional novel, tells of the real horrors of working in a Chicago meat packing factory.
Sinclair had gone undercover, in a meat factory, for seven weeks to gain the information necessary
to write the book. Throughout the novel, there are hints of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and JP Morgan along with the
formation of unions. The Jungle, from 1906, has been deemed as "a classic denunciation of
industrial capitalism and one of the most revolutionary novels of the age" (wordsocialism.org). In
the "Progressive Era", Sinclair's ideas were at the center of the social movement, due to the brutality
of the time period, The Jungle was not easily published. "The aesthetics of a novel include the way
an author uses elements of style, such as imagery, irony, and paradox, to enhance characters, plot,
and theme. From this perspective, The Jungle is not considered quality literature." (cliffsnotes.com)
Others thought that Sinclair only wrote the novel as propaganda for his political career, or as a
simple muckraking novel. He was not thought to write nonfiction, so his words could not always be
trusted. For these reasons, Sinclair was not considered a serious author.
Sinclair was an expressive socialist, and showed his beliefs in his novels. In The Jungle, Sinclair
frequently referenced socialism and how it would fix all the problems created through capitalism.
"Capitalism is not the problem.

The Alarm Clock That Opens Richard Wright

  • 1. The Alarm Clock That Opens Richard Wright The alarm clock that opens Richard Wright's 1940 classic Native Son was not only a wakeup call to the nation, but to the American Communist Party: an institution that Wright supported, despite its own shortcomings in advocating for the rights of Black Americans. Throughout the novel, Wright depicts Communist Party members Jan Erlone and Boris Max, as well as sympathiser Mary Dalton as individuals that care on some level for Bigger, but their efforts are misguided. Jan and Mary, who both advocate for racial equality, are oblivious of Bigger's feelings throughout Book One. The Communist Party is unable to prevent Bigger from being executed. In the final portion of the novel, Bigger's revelation and state of inner peace does not come from the party's failed attempts to save him Instead, Wright places that agency with the individual, albeit with some help from liberal whites. Max, who represents Bigger during the murder trial, rejects Bigger's self–realization. Wright suggests that battles with the outside world can be engaged, Black Americans must deal with the internal struggles they face. The Communist Party is a well–intentioned organization with the fatal flaw that its liberal white members will never be able to relate to Bigger and other Black Americans or the realities they face daily. Early in the work, Wright establishes the American Communist Party as a concerned and idealistic organization unable to work within the circumscribed realities of Black life. Literature ... • 5. The Irony of the Jungle The Irony of The Jungle Between 1870 and 1900 Chicago grew from a population of 299,000 to almost 1.7 million, the fastest–growing city ever at the time. This surge in population was largely attributed to immigrants coming from European countries seeking a chance for employment and new freedoms associated with moving to the United States at the time. 1905, in particular, was a historic year when a surge of over 1 million immigrants came to the city. During this time, author Upton Sinclair was working undercover, investigating working conditions in the city's meatpacking district. Sinclair's research was integrated into his novel The Jungle, a tragic story about a group of immigrants from Lithuania led by Jurgis, the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the injury was caused by leaping out of the way from out–of–control cattle, the company declares Jurgis' injury to be his own fault. Forced to rest at home with no means to earn money while other strong–bodied men replace him, the bank eventually forecloses on his home, only to resell to another eager family that shared Jurgis' optimism. Realizing this truth, Jurgis' father Anatanas is just as resolute to help provide for the family. He takes up a job in a pickling–basement with poor air quality and contact with poisonous chemicals, which ultimately leads to his death. Lack of sympathy is a common theme which helps Sinclair paint the picture of an unforgiving environment, where people come and go, processed much like cattle. Sinclair's title is appropriate given the ways people are treated when an accident happens. Similar tragic fates befall the rest of Jurgis' extended family that enter work in the meatpacking district. Realizing their home will be increasingly difficult to afford when deciding to have a child with Jurgis, Ona must work in the meatpacking district. If a strong man like Jurgis can be broken by the working and living conditions, it is no surprise that Ona is also broken by the system, being raped by her boss and unable to do anything about it because of his favor with politicians and lawmen. • 7. The Pros And Cons Of The Red Scare In the mid 1940's America faced a kind of fear that many viewed at the time to be easily justified. The "Red Scare" effected many people and ruined many lives during this time. During the red scare people were black listed in Hollywood and were prevented from finding work. This is because the "Red Scare" was a point in time where there was widespread fear and government paranoia by a society or state, about a potential rise of communism, anarchism, or radical leftism. The black list came around from the idea that communists were trying to use Hollywood to influence the minds of the people and turn American citizens in to spies for the Russians. This was no easy time for many Americans, people not only abused whomever they didn't trust by creating claims that that they were communist with or without evidence. The first Hollywood blacklist was created on November 25, 1947. This was the day after ten writers and directors were cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to testify to the House Un–American Activities Committee. The writer Dolton Trumbo was one of the individuals black listed and was sent to prison. The movie incarnation of the book about events of his life some think was a well depiction of his person and life. The book however, containing more detail and seemingly brutal honest documented events differ from the movie. These differences bring into question what are motivations, the changes to the store; and for what purpose. Does the movie portrayal of Trumbo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The hidden purpose of the subway system which Jurgis helps to construct is to break the teamsters' union. Because Jurgis got hit by one of the rail freight cars, he broke his arm and lost his job. 2. Find a passage in this chapter illustrating Jurgis' opinion of the evangelists who preach to the poor. Which theme(s) does Jurgis' opinion of the evangelists illustrate? "The evangelist was preaching 'sin and redemption,' the infinite grace of God and His pardon for human frailty. He was very much in earnest, and he meant well, but Jurgis, as he listened, found his soul filled with hatred. What did he know about sin and suffering–––with his smooth, black coat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this point in the story, Jurgis viewed that there is no place for him in this world. 2. Why might some readers find this chapter easier and more interesting to read than many of the other chapters in the story? Since Upton Sinclair illustrate the life of an affluent family like the Jones, this chapter is easier and more interesting to read than many of the other chapters in the story. In this chapter, the Jones' family lived in luxurious castle with butlers and servants unlike previous chapters where Sinclair described the struggles of the factory workers. 3. Many critics believe this scene is written to delight Sinclair's socialist friends. At the time it was written, readers would have easily recognized that the butler is named after Alexander Hamilton, who was Secretary of the Treasury, and that the dog is named after Admiral Dewey, who fought in the Spanish American War. Sinclair and the other socialists would have considered these two men to be perpetrators of the capitalist system, and ridiculing them in this scene would have been very amusing. Besides providing his readers with an amusing scene, what does Sinclair reveal about the changes in Jurgis' character during this chapter? During this chapter, Sinclair reveal that capitalism bought out the worst in people especially Jurgis. After Jurgis migrate to America, he became an alcoholic, a violent and an adamant man. For ... In 1900, China was ruled by the Manchu dynasty, however less than in half a century a completely new government came into power. The Qing government had already been weak due to European countries because they gained great influence in China's affair by using forces. They became so unpopular that people plotted to overthrow them. Despite the fact that the revolution of 1911 failed to overthrow them, it made the government collapse. People needed changes. And even the Japanese operation against the Communists had opposite effect, because Three All Campaign's aimed at turning people against the Communists by burning down their villages and crops, murdering the peasants made the peasants hate the Japanese even more and help the Communists attack them. The Japan–China war was a great success of the Communists because, by 1945, they controlled eighteen 'liberation areas' in the countryside. Invariably it was the Reds to whom the Japanese submitted. However, after the Japanese retreat, the Communists and the Guomindang raced for control the areas that Japan had occupied. The USA became involved, because the US did not want the Communists to win control of China. They supported Guomindang troops to seize most other coastal cities and ports. The USA did not want to renew the civil war, therefore send General George C. Marshall to bring the two sides together in December 1945. He managed to sing a truce between them but it broke down in early 1946. The Civil War started. Guomindang seemed stronger because their military power was helped by America. Chiang Kai–shek was recognised as the true leader of China. However, many decades ago, this event was foreseen and was foretold in the book, 1984, by George Orwell. Orwell saw the rise of totalitarianism, and he was deeply disturbed by what he saw. He believes totalitarianism will be the method that communist party adopts to fight freedom. The book foreshadows many of the events that will happen in a communist society. In many ways, the incident of Tiananmen Square in 1989 echoes 1984, which is a warning that totalitarian government is a power abuser, propaganda manipulator, and democracy suppressor. Biography of Mao Zedong INTRODUCTION Born on December 26, 1893, Mao Zedong was the founding leader of the People's Republic of China and ruled as the Chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1949 up until he died on September the 9th, 1976. He is largely accredited with crafting the post–revolution policies known as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution (Joseph, 1986) which have left many critics arguing that the political and economic devastation those policies left are what define his legacy. Mao Zedong however, left a legacy that far outweighs the aforementioned argument. How Mao improved CHINA internally Mao Zedong's most central passion was his insistence in the empowerment of the peasants. Once Mao Zedong ascended to leadership, land reform became the principal feature of the "Chinese Communist Party line" (Chang, 2014). In 1950 he oversaw the implemented the Agrarian Reform Law (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014) which gave the land to the peasants, and authorised 'people's courts' to try their former landlords. Subsequently, the agrarian reform re–assigned more than half the land to the peasants meaning that 300 million peasants were effectively given 47 million hectares of land. Additionally, Mao empowered peasants by giving jobs to peasants from the countryside and prioritising them in the industrialisation process which led to the dramatic reduction in the unemployment levels and introduction of insurance for workers. Essay An Analysis Of The Jungle By Upton Sinclair In the early 1900's life for America's new Chicago immigrant workers in the meat packing industry was explored by Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle. Originally published in 1904 as a serial piece in the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, Sinclair's novel was initially found too graphic and shocking by publishing firms and therefore was not published in its complete form until 1906. In this paper, I will focus on the challenges faced by a newly immigrated worker and on what I feel Sinclair's purpose was for this novel. Although the Packingtown in Chicago was in a constant state of activity, the sheer number of available workers and the rule of supply and demand made it difficult for some to find work. It was not uncommon for some workers to stand at the plant doors for weeks before being selected. And once a person was chosen to be a worker, they had to labor at a fever pitch to make sure they were retained. That being said, the worker's problems did not end once they found steady employment. Employers were harsh and unforgiving in how they treated their employees. For example, if an employee was one minute late they were penalized an hours pay. If they were 20 minutes late they forfeited their employment. Worse yet, if they were injured or hurt on the job the company takes no responsibility and the worker is forced to recuperate on their own time without pay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not only is there controversy as to what Orwell depicts in the novel, but there is also confusion and debate as to what we are seeing in our developing world presently. While it is easy to hold strong beliefs on each end of the spectrum, it is necessary to take into account what we can gain from both sides rather than limiting ourselves to one or the other. The articles provided give two very different perspectives on the book, but what they have in common is extremity. This novel was without a doubt intentionally written with an underlying message of extremity in terms of conservatism and liberalism. I strongly believe that Orwell wrote 1984 with both ends of the spectrum in mind to depict a world of radicalism in which chaos and absurdities are ever so present. ... I never really grasped the concept of it until I read the book The Jungle and began to research for this paper. Before I begin I would like to go through a condensed version of the history of Socialism. It was founded in 1901 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Two groups came together to form the Socialists, the Social Democratic Party and the "Kangaroo" wing of the older Socialist Labor Party. These parties contained mostly immigrant workers from big cities (Jurgis from The Jungle was one such fictional worker). The new party expanded and included every type of extremist. The only state to have a Socialist ballot is the Socialist Party of Oregon, which formed in 1994. This is how it remains today. These writers brought to the attention of the nation problems that were carefully shielded from the public's eyes. Many of these authors such as Upton Sinclair, Jack London, Ida Tarbell and many others took a particularly Socialistic view and this was expressed in their writing. A few of the books that Sinclair wrote had an especially socialistic tone, such as The Jungle which was published in 1906. China 's Cultural Revolution : China Veronica Gregorio Hocutt ENG 2H 15 February 2016 China's Cultural Revolution Introduction Genocide is the intentional carnage of a large group of people usually due to a particular religion or ethnicity. China's Cultural Revolution lasted from 1966 until 1976 and dealt with Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Communist Party of China, wanting to realm the true communists. Both Night and China's Cultural Revolution had to do with a dominant, political figure seeking the flawless race. In Night, numerous races not considered German or Aryan were slayed such as the Jews, Hungarians, Russians, and French, on the other hand, China's Cultural Revolution mainly allocated with only the Chinese race. In order to preclude future genocides or war crimes from happening, countries can make written pacts with penalties to anyone that disrupts the rubrics, let all citizens have a part in government and verdict making, and resolve any and all conflicts that arise. Causes In China's Cultural Revolution, many causes added to the genocide taking place. A vast majority of the causes had to do with political complications between Mao Zedong and other political figures. For instance, Mao didn't like any ideologies that went in contradiction of communism (Lamb 1). He also didn't like anyone opposing him, gaining popularity (Li 2). Since Mao became so close minded on his beliefs, it led him to accept as true that only certain people, those who shared his views on communism, be worthy of life. This ... In different cultures and historical times, abortion has been viewed in a variety of perspectives, with two opposing sides equally stubborn on the morality and rightness of their positions. The other side argues it is murder to have a woman decide the fate of another defenseless human. Each country follows the principles of their own economic system, which means different problems will arise. In recent years, China has surpassed USA as the world's largest merchandise trader. Their exports and imports combined was worth up to $4 billion USD. They are importing huge quantities of raw materials, and exporting huge quantities of manufactured goods. Although China's economy has been growing slower than others, it remains as one of the largest contributors to world GDP growth. One of the main causes to China's slow GDP growth is their overinvestments. In 2015, investments made up 43.3% of China's GDP, while household consumptions only made up 38%. The imbalance between these two has widened China's debt. Keeping up with high levels of investments require a lot of credit, causing China's debt to grow to over 250% today. A couple of years ago, China started to heavily invest in steel. The Chinese government encouraged the investment because steel was used in automobiles and infrastructure, and the demand was high. China became one of the world's largest steel producer, and holder of spare capacity. However, in recent years, the demand for steel has declined. China was left struggling with declining demand, overcapacity, and a growing debt because of a tight credit. China has been cutting down excess steel capacity. More than 65 ... • 57. Evolution of Power Distance in Russia The Evolution of Power Distance in Russia Several authors such as Hofstede, Shwarz and Trompenaars investigated the characteristics of power distribution in different societies, each with their own accents. Hofstede uses the criteria of power distance. It describes to what extend a countries population accepts that power in organisations and institutions is unquelly divided. In other words ; is the power distribution mainly based on vertical or horizontal relationships? (Nardon & Steers, 2006 ; Robins, Judge & Campbell, 2011) In countries with a high Power Distance Index (PDI) the population seems to accept that there is a high inequality of power distribution. The use of that power is not necessarily abussive. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More recent studies show a strong decrease of Russia's PDI. Naumov & Puffer estimated Russia's PDI to be only 40 points in 2000, which puts the country close to the average and next to developed countries such as the Netherlands (38), Canada (39) and the USA (40). Veiga, Yanouzaz and Buchholtz confirmed that power distance in Russia dropped significantly after the perestrojka was announced. Two of the main reasons for the decrease might be attributed to the economic en political decentralisation following the post–communist reforms and the privatisation of economic power that led to a separation of the lather (Naumov & Puffer, 2000). It should be stressed that a high PDI seems somewhat typical for communist countries. Russia had a significantly higher power distance acceptance in earlier studies when it recently had experienced the communist regime. China, also a country with communist roots, scores quite highly on the power distance index. Now that both countries take a more market–oriented approach, the PDI is dropping. This is quite surprising in a certain point of view : Wasn't it Marx's goal to create an equal society grid for the whole population? This result illustrates the gap between theory and practice that's inherent to the communist policy. (Fernandez, Carlson, Stepina & Nicholson, 1997). NARDON L., STEERS ... • 59. Socialism in The Jungle Essay Socialism in The Jungle The Rudkus family arrived from Lithuania to find Chicago as "a city in which justice and honor, women's bodies and men's souls, were for sale in the marketplace, and human beings writhed and fought and fell upon each other like wolves in the pit, in which lusts were raging fires, and men were fuel, and humanity was festering and stewing and wallowing in its own corruption." (Pg.165) The city, during the time span of the novel, was truly a jungle–like society in which Upton Sinclair found much fault and great room for improvement. Sinclair perceived the problem in American society to be the reign of capitalism. In The Jungle, he presented the reader with the Rudkus family; who encountered a great deal of ... Jurgis and his family were faced with many predicaments related to these poor surroundings and circumstances. The family hastily saw that they must enter the competition forced upon them in a social Darwinist fashion. When he first arrived in Packingtown, Jurgis found work quickly in the meat packing industry because of his strong, young stature. As the years went by, however, and he grew plagued with injuries and financial troubles, Jurgis found work to be evermore difficult to obtain and hold. The social system cracked down on the family and offered nowhere for the Rudkus' to turn for help. Not only did the family stumble upon difficulties in their workplaces, but in basic living conditions as well. Jurgis and his family witnessed such atrocities, as baby Antanas tragically drowning in the unpaved roads, devastating financial loss through misinformation concerning the purchase and custody of their house, and unsanitary meat packed and sold for regular consumption. Such incredible pandemonium was involved with virtually all of the Rudkus family's daily activities and never ceased to cause anxiety and worry in their overburdened lives. This desolation drove family members to radical attempts at survival and hope for some means of liberation from their atrocious new lives in America. At ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparing Upton Sinclair's Life And Accomplishments Born in 1878, Upton Sinclair came into the world with high prospects; his mother was from a wealthy family, and his father carried the respected name Sinclair. A hero of the War of 1812, Sinclair's great grandfather had accumulated prestige. However, the Civil War along with Upton's father's alcoholism left the Sinclairs with little to their famous name. As a result, the family often moved from boarding house to boarding house, unable to pay the rent. Priscilla, Sinclair's mother, was a polar opposite of her husband. • 63. Essay about Upton Sinclair And The Chicago Meat-Packing... Upton Sinclair and the Chicago Meat–packing Industry In 1900, there were over 1.6 million people living in Chicago, the country's second largest city. Of those 1.6 million, nearly 30% were immigrants. Most immigrants came to the United States with little or no money at all, in hope of making a better life for themselves. A city like Chicago offered these people jobs that required no skill. However, the working and living conditions were hazardous and the pay was barely enough to survive on. This is the bases for Upton Sinclair's book, The Jungle. Sinclair agreed to "investigate working conditions in Chicago's meatpacking plants," for the Socialist journal, Appeal to Reason, in 1904. Politicians played an important role in the political machine. In order to maintain this role, they received substantial kickbacks from the owners of the factories. They would recruit people to help the immigrants become citizens of the United States, and then pay the immigrants to vote for a specific candidate, often several times. Before the Progressive Party materialized, there were just the Democrats and the Republicans, "and the one got the office which bought the most votes." Readers were not concerned with the treatment of workers, as portrayed by The Jungle, because they really didn't care for the working class, or more specifically, immigrants. However, readers were shocked when they discovered exactly how their meat was processed and prepared. Sinclair used just as much, if not more, gruesome detail in describing the products the American public was consuming, as he did when describing the workplace, living conditions, politics, society and Chicago's scenery. In a futile attempt to build up the readers' sympathy toward the wage–slaves, Sinclair also details the process in which foods not related to the meat–packing industry are prepared. For example, he writes, "their pale blue milk...was watered, and doctored with formaldehyde." The controversy over food ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From 1949 until his death in 1976, Mao Zedong transformed a country in poverty and chaos into a well–organised state with an educated populous, over which he maintained total control. 2 more intro sentences. It is clear that Mao's initial goal was to gain power in China, which is demonstrated by his determination to overthrow Chiang Kai–shek and the Kuomintang (KMT) via his idiosyncratic version of communist revolution. In order to do so, Mao utilised methods he deemed most suitable for the communists and, more broadly, Chinese society. For example, unlike his Marxist predecessors, Mao believed that peasants, not urban workers, were the key to rebellion in China. Subsequently, in 1926, he organised peasant unions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This process began with Mao encouraging peasants to rebel against their landlords through the 'speak bitterness campaign', which allowed for the redistribution of land to the proletariat. However, individual land ownership was not truly communist; thus followed the gradual transition to farming collectives, and finally centralised communes in 1958, where land ownership was abolished. In addition to land reform, there were campaigns of mass suppression targeting counter– revolutionaries. Following the elimination of the landlord class, Mao began two movements aimed at corruption and enemies of the state, known as the 3–anti and 5–anti campaigns. The 3–anti campaign (1951), aimed at bureaucracy and waste, was succeeded by the 5–anti campaign (1952), which was aimed at theft, cheating, bribery and tax evasion. The result was an atmosphere of fear and suspicion, which served to strengthen Mao's power base. In addition to creating a communist society, Mao wished to strengthen and develop China's economy, although his level of success in this area is debatable. Immediately after victory in 1949, Mao began to nationalise and centralise all private industry. In 1953, the first of the Five Year Plans, based on the soviet economic model began. • 71. Communist Party USA Period 7 The Communist Party USA is a minor party of the U.S. that is the largest communist party found within the country. In 1919, the Left Wing Caucus of the Socialist Party made plans of regaining control of the Socialist Party of America by carrying on an active campaign to win a majority of the party's governing National Executive Committee. Delegations were sent from the sections of the party that had been expelled to the emergency convention of August 30, 1919 to demand that they be seated. The Caucus then split into two separate parties over how to respond to the violations of party legality by the outgoing NEC. One faction, dominated by the language federations, was expelled from the party only to join C.E. Ruthenburg and Louis C. Fraina to turn away from that effort and form the Communist Party of America at a convention on September 1, 1919. • 73. Essay on An Analysis of the Jungle by Upton Sinclair In the early 1900's life for America's new Chicago immigrant workers in the meat packing industry was explored by Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle. In the early 1900's a newly arrived immigrant worker faced numerous challenges that had to be overcome. While not all of these examples have a direct monetary impact, each of the dealings associated with them does which in turn motivates the parties involved to make decisions and perform actions outside the normal scope for their character. The third challenge faced by new immigrants was acquiring and then keeping steady work. Worse yet, if they were injured or hurt on the job the company takes no responsibility and the worker is forced to recuperate on their own time without pay (i.e.; when Jurgis sprained his ankle and had to recuperate at home for 3 months). The final insult to the workers was that even if they were always on time, worked hard and maintained their health they could lose their job due to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Upton Sinclair 's The Jungle The Jungle's purpose is to illustrate just what happens when the American Dream does not come true. It is not for a lack of determination that its protagonist does not succeed with abundance –– nor ethic or spirit; he merely falls victim to a system in which those at the top succeed with abundance at the severe expense of those left with nothing at the bottom. The book's author, Upton Sinclair, sought to show America the cost of its capitalist system. Born into a poor family with wealthy relatives, Sinclair was aware of social and economic disparity in America from a young age (The Jungle v). These early moments of jubilee in the book provide a very effective contrast to the book's main themes of human misery and powerlessness as the life of Jurgis falls apart piece by piece. Following this wedding sequence the book catches its readers up on the status of Jurgis and the rest during the six months prior. A man of strong build, it did not take long for Jurgis to find work in the Chicago stockyards sweeping cow entrails into waste chutes on the killing floors of Brown's slaughterhouse. The mechanics of the slaughterhouse are communicated with vivid detail – so much so that it is no wonder they became the primary subject readers latched onto when the book originally released. Among the most interesting slaughterhouse descriptions which Sinclair provides is that of the concept of "speeding up", in which workers in certain positions at the slaughterhouse are trained and paid more to work faster in order to set the pace of the slaughterhouse's disassembly machine and achieve a higher output. This exemplifies one of Sinclair's issues with capitalism. In a capitalist society, the poor are kept in need, which makes them exploitable. Because there were many unemployed people looking for work at the stockyards at any given time, not performing at the dangerous pace set by others often meant giving up your job to someone more capable of or willing to ... Upton Sinclair gained fame in the early 1900's from his muckraking novel, The Jungle, describing the life of a young Lithuanian immigrant, Jurgis, living in Chicago in pursuit of the American dream. Jurgis found out that America isn't as good as it appeared; with higher wages came more expensive goods, and with cheaper houses came higher interest rates. In the "Progressive Era", Sinclair's ideas were at the center of the social movement, due to the brutality of the time period, The Jungle was not easily published. "The aesthetics of a novel include the way an author uses elements of style, such as imagery, irony, and paradox, to enhance characters, plot, and theme. From this perspective, The Jungle is not considered quality literature." (cliffsnotes.com) Others thought that Sinclair only wrote the novel as propaganda for his political career, or as a simple muckraking novel. He was not thought to write nonfiction, so his words could not always be trusted. For these reasons, Sinclair was not considered a serious author.
