Knowledge And Virtue In Meno
Socrates is known as one of the most prestigious philosophers to ever be alive. In his writing Meno,
he tries to figure out or show what knowledge and virtue truly are. Throughout Meno, Socrates uses
the argument that knowledge and virtue either are used for good or for evil. The majority of men are
good and honorable which always strives for good, but there are some men that want evil and strive
for folly. In his argument, Socrates explains that knowledge is something more than just true
opinion. His argument explains knowledge as being something that was given to us when we were
born. Socrates believes that true knowledge and opinion will always end up giving the correct
answer to any sort of issue. When looked at throughout this text, this ... Show more content on

So what is the difference between the two? Socrates believed that knowledge was something better
than true opinion, which is very true, but I have an even better, slightly different description. I firmly
believe that true opinion comes out of the knowledge that we learn. Without knowledge of anything,
how can one have an opinion? Socrates thought of knowledge as something that can be true or false.
This is another area that I disagree with him on. Knowledge can give you information on all things.
You may receive knowledge about beneficial things or you may receive it on something that could
be harmful. Either way, it does not make the knowledge false. All knowledge is true; it just may be
given for different

Boethius, Consolation of Philosophy: 4.22-29
Shermetrius Mack Art of Living & Dying Professor Oliver Ranner March 3, 2011 Boethius,
Consolation of Philosophy: 4.22–29 In this passage Philosophy wants Boethius and the reader to
understand that fortune does not truly bring a person true happiness. In its realistic form, fortune is a
never–ending spinning wheel that gives and takes away fortune at any moment it time. Thus, one
should never confuse fortune with true happiness because true happiness cannot be taken away.
According to philosophy, in its truest form pure happiness is embedded within each person (i.e.
God) either detached, or attached goods of fortune is not true satisfaction because what fortune may
bring to a person is not more valuable then that person itself. Since ... Show more content on

The case of martyrs disproves Fortune because it birthed happiness as being true happiness: they are
able to be happy even seeking death, which would seem to bring an end to all Fortune based
happiness. Therefore, the form of happiness must not be linked to Fortune. The good that fortune
brings is an instable illusion of happiness rather than true happiness and the ignorance of how
fortune is providing happiness because it makes you blind to your own reality and what people
consider being happiness. Fear of losing things and encountering misfortune in turn kills you
because it has poisoned you mine to become so dependent on them that when they leave people fall

Peter Unger's Argument Against Skepticism Analysis
Critique against Unger's Argument for Skepticism
Do you ever wonder if you know anything? In his argument for skepticism, Peter Unger, states that
"nobody ever knows anything to be so" (Unger, Pg. 42). If this were to be true, can one be certain
that one knows things about oneself, the world one lives in, and about others? In fact, through the
use of different methods, one can indeed know things about oneself, the world one lives in, and
about others, which is why Peter Unger's argument for skepticism can't be true.
In order to understand Unger's argument and why it can't be true, one must first understand what
knowledge, skepticism, and Unger's argument and reasons for skepticism. According to the justified
true belief, knowledge is something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Utilizing the five senses in order to know something about oneself, the world one lives in, and
others usually works, but our senses sometimes deceive us. For example, when light is refracted in a
certain way, our brain leads us to believe that the thing such as a pencil is bent. Once we take the
object out of the water, however, we can clearly see that it was not bent. Additionally, one can never
be absolutely certain that what one knows about others is true. For example, one might think that
they know the favorite color of another individual to be blue, but be wrong as the other individuals
favorite color is actually green. Even though one cannot always know with certainty if one know
things to be so, one can always know some things to be

Why Is Knowledge Considered A Belief?
It is human nature to ask the "why" question. As soon as humans are able to speak for the most part,
the first question we all start asking is "why." "Why" is the sky blue, "Why" does the sun rise in the
east and set in the west. "Why" is the number one question for the study of knowledge and how it
can be acquired. In order to have "knowledge" you must understand how you to achieve that
knowledge through truth, belief and justification. The next couple of questions that are asked are
usually "what is knowledge?" and "why is knowledge considered a belief?" The study of knowledge
(logos) or better known as Epistemology focuses on the investigation to differentiate between the
justified beliefs from opinion. Knowledge is considered a belief because our experiences, what we
see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. This breaks down into three distinct conditions. The first of the
three says that one must believe that the statement is true and the second says that the statement is in
fact true and third the person is justified in believing the statement that was provided to be true.
Therefore, knowledge is a justified true belief. Knowledge needs to be a justified belief. Knowledge
needs to hold some truth, otherwise it is false. However, knowledge cannot always be a true belief.
Speech acts are a big deal in the search for knowledge. "Knowledge that" and "Knowledge how are
two of the biggest speech acts in Philosophy. For example in mathematics, it is KNOWN THAT

According to Aristotle, Heraclitus claims that “the same...
According to Aristotle, Heraclitus claims that "the same thing both is and is not," and this would
imply that contraries belong to the same subject simultaneously. Heraclitus denies our ability to
establish truth, and questions the reliability of knowledge: for Aristotle; serious philosophical
consideration must be given to such skepticism, because the logical conclusion of this position has
undesirable effects on metaphysical discussion. First philosophy (or metaphysics) investigates the
system of principles underlying the study of being (viz. beings as being), and the philosopher should
be able to state the principle that permits the education of all things. According to Aristotle, the
principle of demonstration must first be examined, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In any event, the act of showing someone that something is (or is not) reduces the argument to the
basic source for any demonstration, that is, any proof is reduced to the ultimate position (i.e. the
initial cause for demonstration). In essence, the principle cannot be demonstrated by virtue of
deduction; if it could be deduced from another axiom, then it would not be the first principle.
Moreover, if the principle could be demonstrated, then "all things" would be subject to
demonstration, as Heraclitus seems to believe. However, to demand demonstration (in the strict
sense) would beg the question, because it would lead to an infinite regress and there would still be
no demonstration.
If the same thing both is and is not, then, for instance, a being can both exist and not exist
simultaneously, and the same thing can both be true and not be true simultaneously. To say that the
same thing both is and is not is to deny the first principle, and to refuse to be consistent (or follow
any logical truth). According to Aristotle, Heraclitus' way of thinking is marked by circular
reasoning inasmuch as any rational being implicitly recognize the principle as self–evident, and to

Storytelling And Memory In The Things They Carried
The novel The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is about the emotional effects the war has on
soldiers and the reality vs expectation upon soldiers. O'Brien tells this story from his perspective as
a young man and how he struggles with even the idea of war. He talks about what soldiers overcome
throughout it. O'Brien describes what it is like for the soldiers to always have a constant worry that
they could die at any time and not go home to their family. In the chapter "Speaking of Courage"
social obligation takes a big part, O'Brien talks about his friend Norman getting back to his home.
Norman is driving around his town and thinks, "They were for common calor. The routine, daily
stuff– just humping, just enduring– but that was worth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
O'Brien talks about never knowing if a war story is true or not. O'Brien stats, "In war you lose your
sense of definite, hence your sense of truth itself, and therefore it's safe to say that in a true war story
nothing is ever absolutely true." (O'Brien 70). This quote shows storytelling and memory because
O'Brien is saying that war stories can not always be true, or only parts if it can be. During the war
everything is different, the truth could be the truth of how someone took it in, not what actually
happened. Some war stories may even seem pointless often times. "Often in a true war story there is
not even a point, or else the point doesn't hit you until twenty years later..." (O'Brien 78). This quote
shows storytelling and memory because it is saying that stories being told do not usually have a
point, so even if the story is true it does not really matter because there is no point to it. Usually the
story they tell, they only tell it because they remember it. O'Brien throughout the novel states that
there is never a true war story, but no one really knows what parts are true: "You can tell a true war
story by the questions you ask. Somebody tells a story, let's say, and afterward you ask, 'Is it true?'
and if the answer matters, you've got your answer." (O'Brien 79). This shows storytelling and
memory because he is saying that to tell if it is true or not you have to think if the answer matters. If
the answer matters the story is probably not true, because what war story depends on a kind of truth

Martin Luther On Moralism
When it comes The Freedom of a Christian, Martin Luther is trying to explain to the people what it
truly means to have faith in God. Luther believed that having true faith would save you, and that
indulgences had nothing to do with being saved from purgatory. Faith is showing people that you
want to live by the Word of Christ, and not by what the Roman Church is telling them to do. Martin
Luther goes on to explain in The Freedom of a Christian, what it means to be a Christian. To be a
Christian to Martin Luther it meant that you have to show true faith in the almighty Lord. Luther
believes that faith is the most important thing when it comes to living a true Christian life. He
believes that as long as you have a real belief in God, that a person will begin to spread the Word of
God. Luther says, "Faith redeems, corrects, and preserves our consciences so that we know the
righteousness does not consist in works, although works neither can nor ought to be wanting"
(Luther pg. 24). This helps explain what Luther really thought about faith, he believed that once you
have true faith, then one will begin to do what comes along with living a Christian life. Martin
Luther helps explain faith to other Christians around the world by using his Three power of faiths.
The first power of faith talks about how the relationship goes with God, and it means that God only
has promises and commandments. The second power faith means that when one has true faith one
will begin to put more trust

The Pros And Cons Of Friendship
Imagine this: you are feeling down because you have an issue with your family and you need
someone to talk to but there is nobody. The problem will get worse and worse, generating more
sadness and self–hate. This is the scenario of a person who does not have a true friend to talk with.
Friendship has a big impact on the well–being of a teenager. In this essay, I will discuss the positives
and negatives of a teenage friendship.
1)
A friendship is a type of relationship with a person peer or more there is no limit. A true friendship
has full support and trusts each other with any problems or ideas. Most of all you spend the most of
your time with friends than other things as you with people for everything in your whole life.
Friendship may give you good and bad times. But all friends are something you can easily talk to
about the issues in life, For example family problems or ask for help with school work like everyone
needs help with something. A true friendship needs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes it may take a long time to realize if they were being real or fake as every person changes
as time goes by. A good sign of positive right true friendship is when a friend respects you with your
ideas and accepts your thoughts while you talk to them in a positive truthful way. Another one is a
negative bad friendship which is a friend that wants you to stay with them forever, never lets you
mix you with people as the friend thinks they own you and you all theirs. This is usually when they
care about you, which is a good thing, but everyone can't only keep only one friend in their life as
they need a variety of friends for different things in life. Some friends are always happy and share
you equal with other people never have any problems with who you are with while they treat you
the same way as they do to others with full kindness and

Love Is A Distinct Feeling
Love is very distinct feeling. However, the word love is difficult to define and understand. It is one
of the most important aspects in every human's life. In my opinion, love is utterly unconditional and
is between many people, pets, or even things. Love is very important feeling that everyone should
have. Everyone should show love and receive love, as it is one of the most powerful forces in the
world. Love can be felt for family members, friends, pets, lifeless objects, partners, and many more.
You know that bittersweet feeling you get when you are with someone special. When your heart is
beating out of your chest, and you get the butterflies in the bottom of your stomach when they reach
for your hand. That is what I consider love in a relationship between two unrelated people. Between
partners, love should be a relationship of understanding each other, showing respect to one another,
and being compassionate towards each other. True love for a couple should be unconditional. I
definitely believe in true love, as I have had many great experiences with love. For example, in
September of 2013 I met a handsome guy named Dillon and we started dating. He has shown me
what true love is. He loves me unconditionally whether I am sick, in a bad mood, in a great mood, or
having a horrible day. He makes me exceptionally happy and I love spending my time with him. He
always tells me, "If I'm not making you happy, then I'm not doing my job." He is what keeps me
going from day to

Reliable Characters In The Film Inception, By Christopher...
Christopher Nolan creates the main protagonist of Inception, Cobb, as an unreliable narrator. Cobb
questions his own reality throughout the film. Due to this questioning, Cobb is never entirely sure
that the life he is living is reality or a dream. Understanding the plight of Cobb helps the viewer
understand what true judgment is. True judgment, according to Socrates, is correct judgment
accompanied by 'knowledge' of the differentness. This means that to form a true judgment, a person
must have a correct perception of a thing. He or she must also be able to compare this thing with
another thing and understand the differences between the two. This is also called logic. Cobb
constantly uses logic to figure out if he is a dream or not. Many times

Fact Verses Fiction in O'Brien's The Things They Carried
"The difference between fairy tales and war stories is that fairy tales begin with 'Once upon a time,'
while war stories begin with 'Shit, I was there!'" (Lomperis 41). How does one tell a good war story?
Is it important to be accurate to the events that took place? Does the reader need to trust the
narrator? In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien examines what it takes to tell a good war story.
He uses his own experiences in Vietnam in conjunction with his imagination to weave together a
series of short stories into a novel.
First, the reader must understand just what makes a good "war story". The protagonist of the novel,
Tim O'Brien, gives us his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the chapter "Speaking of Courage" Norman Bowker claims that he is responsible for his friend's
death. However, in the chapter "In the Field" O'Brien places the blame on an unnamed young soldier
who started the enemy attack by turning on his flashlight. Which story is true? Does it matter what is
true? According to Jim Neilson, the story of Kiowa's death "evokes the notion that for the U.S.
Vietnam was a quagmire; his drowning functions almost emblematically to suggest America's
deepening entanglement in southeast Asia" (193). Whatever the meaning behind Kiowa's story, it
certainly fits the requirements for a good war story: there is nothing redeemable in it. Maria Bonn
sees the three stories about Kiowa's death ("Speaking of Courage," "Notes," and "In the Field") as
exemplifying "O'Brien's relentless investigation of how to tell a true war story" (paragraph 39).
When you look at all three of these chapters together you can see the progression from what is
imagined to what is true or is it the other way around? With Tim O'Brien, it is never clear.
The chapter "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" is another questionable narrative. The reader learns
in the first paragraph that the narrator, Rat Kiley, is not known for his accurate story telling ability.
"Rat had a reputation for exaggeration and overstatement, a compulsion to rev up the facts" (O'Brien

The effective use of pathos is the crowning jewel used throughout Quindlen's article. The emotion
portrayed in each testimony gives light and drives the forces of the lasting effects of death and grief.
Mrs. Quindlen's specific examples and hard hitting emotional ties of her own experiences delivers a
fatal blow to the heart strings of the reader. Quindlen conveys, "My great journalistic contribution to
my family is that I write obituaries. First my mother's, 22 years ago, listing her accomplishments:
two daughters, three sons. Then that of my father's second wife, dead of the same disease that killed
his first one." There is more than meets the eye with his statement, carried throughout the article.
Anna Quindlen makes use of repetition in two different occasions, further making her points
stronger and more intense. Repetition as seen in the article in multiple occasions is used describe the
absolute strength of grief. Quindlen uses and repeats the phrase "more than" three times in a row,
each striking harder than the one before. Mrs. Quindlen stating grief's power over us as stated,
"more than sex, more than faith, even more than its usher death", this statement illustrates the power
of grief. Repetition, found in another section of the article, in this instance, one of the examples used
to support the author's position. The repetitious use of the word "loss" gives greater meaning to the
loss of a loved one such as a mother.

Taking a Look at Skepticism
Philosophy Paper
Skepticism is an aspect of philosophy that has been studied throughout history. Within the realm of
skepticism lies the difference between knowledge and mere true belief. Descartes and Moore are
two philosophers who explore the existence of an external world in their writings.
In Descartes' "Meditations" and Moore's "Proof of an External World," we find opposing viewpoints
on what we actually have knowledge on.
A mere true belief is an opinion that happens to be true. It is simply a belief that is true by accident
or luck. Someone can hold a true belief that is completely baseless or even completely by luck as it
requires no experience, only that the belief is supported by reality. Knowledge requires truth and
belief. One must believe the thing that they "know." Someone with knowledge can give an account
of why his or her true opinion is in fact true.
In Descartes' first meditation, he invokes the possibility that we might be tricked by a
"malignant demon" in order to show that we have no knowledge of an external world. He states,
"I will suppose then, not that Deity, who is sovereignly good and the fountain of truth, but that some
malignant demon, who is at once exceedingly potent and deceitful, has employed all his artifice to
deceive me; I will suppose that the sky, the air, the earth, colors, figures, sounds, and all external
things, are nothing better than the illusions of dreams, by means of which this being has laid snares

Self-Deception In Hamlet
In act one, scene three of "Hamlet," Polonius states to his loved ones: "This above all: to thine own
self be true (1, 3, 78)." This is a way of saying that nothing at all matters more to how an individual
should act than their own honour, that they should be true to themselves and not engage in self–
deception. Being true to one's self also means to act in accordance with who an individual is, what
they believe in and what they value the most in life. The need to be true to one's self is at the upmost
importance in society as this will cause an individual to truly achieve true personal happiness and
self–fulfillment. To achieve true personal happiness and self–fulfillment, an individual must be

When he is true to himself, he is a thoughtful philosophical scholar from Wittenberg that is not
capable of murder. He is melancholy, witty and cynical, full of anger towards his mother and uncle.
But Hamlet erases that side of him and changes his personality to being mad and murderous. As
emotions get the best of him, the Ghost easily gets Hamlet to change his personality from an
educated and religious man to a murderer. Hamlet becomes deeply obsessed with avenging his
father's death but keeps on thinking of reasons why he should wait making him a character of
contradictions. These contradictions are seen as many of Hamlet's soliloquies are really debates
between his divided personalities. For example when he says: "To be or not to be? That is the

dead. "Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to

it is better to bear the painful burden of life, or to refuse the burden by killing himself. The quote

True Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee
As people rush from a burning building, smoke filling the blue brushed sky, a man runs in to save a
child stuck under a fallen support beam. Is this "true courage"? What is true courage? True courage
could be defined as a way or feeling that prompts someone to do something and makes that person
able to do it. How do people display true courage? What are ways they are able to display true
courage? In fact, there are three main ways that people are able to express true courage. These three
ways are confronting, acting, and doing the right thing. This may seem pretty easy; however, many
people do not actually show true courage.
Confronting, ya it may seem easy and may seem like anyone can do it; however, not everyone does
it. Now people may think that confronting requires a person to confront, that is not the case. People
are able to confront life problems as well as people. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, the main
character, Scout Finch or Jean Louise Finch, confronts many things in the book. The first thing that
she confronts is one of her neighbors, Arthur Radley or Boo Radley, when she first confronts him

Plato 's View On Philosophers
Plato is a philosopher; however, in "Plato's Republic," Plato's view on philosophers within society is
rather unorthodox compared with others who study philosophy. This is due to Plato's views of
individuals each having different skills they are naturally good at; he states that only true
philosophers will be fit to rule. All others who attempt to rule will create terrible consequences for a
city. The people shun philosophers because they are lovers of knowledge and are perceived to be
different from them. The majority of people in a city are not lovers of knowledge but rather lovers of
beauty. Referencing "Plato's Republic, each person has a different skill they are naturally good at.
Knowing this, philosophers must be naturally good at thinking and arguing. However, a good and
great ruler needs more than these traits; a true ruler will have to be "those who love the sight of
truth."(475d). Given that statement, those who love the sight of the truth are true philosophers that
have a love for knowledge, opposed to having a love for beauty, sight, and sound. Furthermore, a
true philosopher must love the ideas behind things as well as the objects themselves, not just one
part. Whereas lovers of sight only love things that appear beautiful versus a lover of knowledge who
loves and appreciates beauty in its entirety. In order for one to be a true ruler, one has to be a true
philosopher. To be a true philosopher means to have a love for knowledge and wisdom. A lover of

Four Truth Tests With An Example Of A Belief That Would Be...
Explain the four truth tests and illustrate each with an example of a belief that would be true by its
standards.
Warrantibility – If you know something, then you believe that, that something is something, but you
cannot say that you know that something unless that something is true. Because, for that something
to be true, it has to have warrantability. What this means is that knowledge implies belief, but belief
does not imply knowledge. Therefore knowledge is warranted, true belief.
Logical Warrantability is "The laws of identity, noncontradiction, and the excluded middle are
examples"––Mitchell––. It is snowing so it must be snowing is and example.

Are Carbohydrates True
There are countless things in this world that are not true that some people believe to be true. Just
because many people believe in one thing does not make that thing true. For example, many people
believe mermaids or bigfoot are real and both of those things have been proven to not be true. Some
more realistic things that are believed to be true but are not are: the five–second rule, only 10
percent of the brain is used, carbohydrates make you gain weight, bats are blind, and it takes seven
years for swallowed gum to digest. These things have been proven to be false with some research
and tests. If a piece of food is dropped and has only been on the ground for five seconds, that does
not mean that that piece of food is okay to eat. That one piece of food could have easily picked up
harmful bacteria, such as salmonella, in that short period of time. The amount of germs that get on
that piece of food does not matter how long it was on the ground rather than how ... Show more

However, that is wrong. Not only do carbohydrates taste good, but they provide energy and are
healthy. There is just not one thing fattening about healthy carbohydrates. Healthy carbohydrates
include the carbohydrates in grains and the carbohydrates in fruits and vegetables. The unhealthy
carbohydrates are called "simple" or "refined". These are in foods that contain sugar or food made
with white flour (Bedwell). Bats are not blind! Though they have small eyes and have a different
way of hunting, this does not mean that they are blind. In fact, some big bats can see clearer and
further than humans can. The reason many people think that bats are blind is because the bat's eyes
are so sensitive to light and light change. This is why they use the sense that they can rely on 24/7:
their sense of smell. The reason that they hunt and come out at night time is also because their eyes
are so sensitive to light

Friendships Bond Together In Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Friendships bond together for many different reasons. Consumer friendship is short lived like a drug

money. When the profit goes down so does the partnership. True friendship is a long lasting often
lifetime journey of sharing each other's joys and sorrows by just being there for each other without
thinking of yourself. Of Mice and Men is a book that tells how two very different men bond together

According to the article, the last and most elusive behavior for keeping friends is being positive.
"The intimacy that makes a friendship thrive must be an enjoyable one." (Karbo). The more we feel
good about a friendship, the more we are willing to expend the energy it takes to keep it alive. This
lack of positivity shows that George and Lennie's relationship will not remain a true friendship.
Those who argue that George and Lennie's relationship is not an example of true friendship would
state that it lacked positive qualities for George as being with Lennie was more trouble than George
could take. George and Lennie had to keep moving from job to job as Lennie kept getting into
trouble. George was furious, "I got you! You can't keep a job and lose me ever' job I get. You do bad
things and I got to get you out. (Steinbeck p11). If George was alone, he could live easier and not
have to deal with always having to get Lennie out of trouble. Lennie consumed all the joy of the
friendship with always getting into trouble and did not have a true friendship with George. George
and Lennie's relationship is a true friendship even though is has its ups and downs. According to
Fehr's research in the article, successful friendships possess an understanding of give and take.
"Hefty helpings of emotional expressiveness and unconditional support are key followed by
acceptance, loyalty and trust."(Karbo). Our true friends are there for us though the thick and thin.
This shows that George and Lennie's relationship is a true friendship. So even in the end of the
book, before George shot Lennie in the head, theirs was a true friendship. Lennie had accidentally
killed Curly's wife and Curly was coming to kill Lennie. In the final scene," Lennie said "I thought
you was mad at me, George." "I never been mad, I ain't not" said George. Lennie

Overview Of Plato And Plato's Theory Of The Four Forms
Throughout history, many philosophers have discussed the question: is human behavior driven by
the mind (logic) or is it driven by a greater force (soul)? This question has been a major topic of
many philosophical discussions. This debate has caused many philosophers to give potential
answers to the problem, yet no one agrees on one idea. Of these potential answers, two well–known
ones are Plato's Theory of Forms and Aristotle's Theory of the Four Causes. Despite their common

True knowledge is information that cannot be refuted or even argued against. In his mind, true
knowledge is absolute truth. Plato uses his Theory of the Forms to explain the nature of everything
in existence. In "Phaedo," Plato gives the example of why a beautiful person or a beautiful object
truly has beauty. Plato argues "that if anything is beautiful besides absolute beauty it is beautiful for
no other reason than because it partakes of absolute beauty; and this applies to everything" (Phaedo
100c). In order for people to identify something that is beautiful, we must have a general
understanding of beauty as an abstract concept. This means that people have the ability to identify a
person or object as beautiful because the person or object is participating in the general form of
beauty. This general form of beauty cannot be seen nor change; it is unlike people and objects in the
visible world which can lose their beauty. Just as with the idea of beauty, Plato argues that his
Theory of Forms applies to all of reality of stating that there is a form for every concept that there
exists. These forms are eternal and unchanging, unaffected and unhindered by the ever–changing
nature of the visible world. The ambiguity of the concept of the forms in Plato's Theory of Forms
lessens the strength of Plato's overall argument. Plato uses the concept of the forms as the basis of

Concepts Of Knowledge, Reality And Existence
The word philosophy derives from Greece, meaning "love of wisdom" and is the study of the basic
concepts of knowledge, reality and existence (Dictionary.com, 2014). Someone who studies
philosophy is called a philosopher; generally they are an individual who loves wisdom (Price,
Lecture 6, 2014). Often said to be the study of questions philosophy raises, what human beings label
as "life's big questions," which leads to them pondering life on a bigger scale. Philosophers ask a lot
of questions and they are looking to answer questions they, personally, have about life. People study
philosophy because they want to discover and understand the truth about themselves as an
individual, the truth about the world that they live in and their relationships relating to the world and
others in it.
Philosophy is broken up into three concepts; "an activity, a set of attitudes and a body of content"
(Knight, 2006). The body of content concept of philosophy is known as "epistemology, metaphysics
and axiology" (Cohen, 2014). Epistemology is the study of "the nature of truth and knowledge"
(Knight, 2006). Metaphysics is the study of questions relating to reality. Axiology is "the study of
questions of value" and also includes the concepts of ethics and aesthetics (Knight, 2006). Ethics
studies moral values and conduct aiming to answer questions about what an individual should do,
what is a good life and what is good conduct. Aesthetics is the study of beauty focusing on what art

On Bullshit By Humbug Summary
B–essaying
When a person wants someone to believe that they have knowledge in a certain field when they
really don't, the communication that follows it is called bullshit. Harry Frankfurt realizes this and
devotes an entire book on distinguishing the importance of bullshit as well as several characteristics
of the term in On Bullshit. One thing pointed out in this book is that the term humbug is sufficient
enough to describe everything that the term bullshit pertains to; therefore, for the purposes of this
paper the terms humbug and bullshit will both be used when referring to bullshit. Humbug has
several characteristics. One characteristic of humbug is that it is "short of lying" (Frankfurt 6). This
entails quite a few things that require ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Frankfurt explains that a humbugger, or a person intentionally using humbug to get their desired
result, must have the desire to deceive for their words to be considered humbuggery.
When presented with the difference between a liar and a bullshitter one must realize that a liar is
aware of the truth while a bullshitter "pays no attention to [the truth] at all" (Frankfurt 61). This
Forester 2 indicates that they have knowledge that what they are saying is not necessarily true;
therefore, their lack of consideration for what is true shows that they have no intention to tell the
truth, or that they intentionally deceive through means of humbug. This would indicate that
Frankfurt's assertion that the humbugger is intentionally deceiving is true; however, he himself
indicates at the end of the book that his sincerity to define a word is bullshit in itself. His logical
approach to explaining that bullshit is merely a cover for the lack of knowledge that we have on the
word. To say that we know now what the term bullshit means would be humbug itself. Are there
examples to a bullshitter that does not intentionally deceive? I believe so. For example, when a

The Interconnectedness Of Knowledge By Rene Descartes And...
The Interconnectedness of Knowledge
René Descartes and William James take two opposing views in an attempt to answer the question of
what true knowledge is. Descartes takes the perspective of a foundationalist, and James takes a
coherentist approach when trying to answer this question. A foundationalist is someone who
believes that there is an indubitable proposition in which all other knowledge receives justification
from. This method of thought is often referred to as The Pyramid, because the tip of the pyramid
represents a belief that an agent knows with no possibility of doubt, and all other beliefs expand
from that indubitable claim, similar to how a pyramid expands from the smallest point. On the other
hand, a coherentist believes that pieces of knowledge are justified on such a basis that they cohere
with a comprehensive system of beliefs that mutually support each other. Coherentism can be
referred to as The Raft, because it represents our body of knowledge as a raft that is floating free
from any anchor. When replacing a piece of the raft, you stand on one side and fix the other,
similarly, when replacing a piece of knowledge, you work from the other claims you have in order
to fix the claim being doubted. Both Descartes and James use their respective approaches in order to
answer the question of what humans can be said to know. In Descartes' quest to answer the question
of truth, he looks to certainty to tell him what beliefs are justifiable. A belief that is

Intrinsic Value And Extrinsic Value Essay
In philosophy, things, properties, and acts contain values. They would fall into three categories of
value: intrinsic value, extrinsic value, and both intrinsic and extrinsic value. Things containing
intrinsic value means people value those things with intrinsic value for its own reason
(Zimmerman). In contrast, things containing extrinsic value means the value of these things are
depending on other things but not by itself. This is the basic difference between intrinsic value and
extrinsic value. In addition, knowledge is extrinsic valuable in general, but some kinds of
knowledge can also be intrinsic valuable. Also, Knowledge is more extrinsic valuable than a true
belief because it provides a higher possibility for an agent to succeed in pursuing his/her goals
(Pritchard 13).
Intrinsic Value (Non Instrumental Value)
Intrinsic value has also been named as non–instrumental value. The general understanding of non–
instrumental value is that a thing is valuable for its own sake and its value is not related to other
things. Zimmerman explains the intrinsic value by using the example of the conversation with
someone. He says that suppose person A asks person B that whether helping people is good or not;
B will answer that helping others is good. Then, A keeps asking that why it is good; B might
response that it is just good by fulfilling others' needs. After that, A can still ask B that why fulfilling
others' needs is good. If B keep answering these questions by adding other

The Theme Of True Love In Disney Movies
"He was so romantic. I could not resist." This was Snow White's idea of true love, based on how
"romantic" he was. True love can not be based off of only romance, unlike what many Disney movie
portray. In the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, where Snow White escapes the jealous
queen and hides with seven dwarfs, she is saved by a prince which she then falls in love with. This
is the storyline that many of Walt Disney's movies are based off of such as Sleeping Beauty,
Cinderella, and Hercules. In Disney movies, the princess is typically saved by a prince and they live
happily ever after, because the princess has found her "true love", but is it actually true love? True

Love in Disney movies are often fabricated out of nothing. Snow White is awoken by true love's
kiss, a kiss from the prince, although the movie suggest no prior relationship before the kiss. The
Prince comes to save the day by kissing Snow White and waking her from her sleep. A kiss can not
be the deciding factor of true love. A relationship, or true love, can not be real if there is no real
connection. Snow White nor the Prince knows anything about each other, if they'll get along, share
the same interest and values, or even like each other. They're "true love" is based on a kiss, lust. This
same thing happens in Sleeping Beauty, Aurora is asleep and can only be awoken by true love's kiss.
The Prince comes to save the day by kissing her, but how can it be true love if they don't really
know each other? Once again, their true love is based on a kiss. In some of Disney's more recent
movies, like Frozen, the have started to incorporate the idea that true love can't be tethered out of
nothing. In Frozen, Elsa says to Anna, "You can't love a man you just met!" (00:00). Elsa is one of
the first princesses to question Disney's idea of true love based off of lust and desire, but it took
Disney pictures several decades to realize that they were portraying the wrong idea of love to young
children. If true love existed in Disney stories, why is there no

Truth In The Bible
Truth is a fact or belief that is accepted as true. Therefore, we all have different believes or facts that
we believe are true. In our secular society we should understand what our truth is in order to know
how to defend it when it comes to people asking. For example, people belief in different religions.
Many religions claim to have truth but do not always have valid reasons to back up their claims.
Therefore, Christianity gives a different view as to how the world works and provides a unique view
on how one should go about living. This vision of life and how one should live is found in the Bible.
Even though, not everyone believes in the Bible, the Bible proves to be true through its historical
accuracy, scientific accuracy, and the fulfillment of prophecies. Although, we can prove truth in the

It is said that ever since photography was invented, it has been a powerful juridical tool. * states
that, "Seeing a photograph almost functions as a substitute for seeing the real thing." Therefore,
being able to see pictures is a form of true evidence. As Susan Sontag pointed out, ""Photography
furnishes evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a
photograph of it." Sontag is saying that this type of evidence is a proof or knowledge of that specific
thing. For example, there are many civil and criminal cases where they need proof in order to punish
that person. In this case, people have videotape proof where people are able to identify it with the
case and realize that there is proof. The images in the videotape are what are telling the truth and
providing evidence for the judges. As * stated, "Given the power of the photograph to provide
strong representations–– vivid displays that seem almost to compel belief–its frequent and growing
use as evidence may not seem at all surprising." Therefore, photography is a great tool for proving

The Cartesian Cogito By Rene ́ Descartes
The Cartesian Cogito
In "Meditation Two" of Meditations, Objections, and Replies, René Descartes argues that we cannot
doubt our own existence. Descartes's Cogito argument is actually stimulated by the "numerous"
"false opinions" (9) in "Meditation One", which he believed true in his youth but now doubts and
attempts to attack through his own writing. Descartes's doubts involve three stages. The first doubt
concerns sense illusion. In other words, Descartes formerly maintained that we obtained truth "either
from the senses or through the senses" (10). He declares that senses can sometimes deceive us, but
in a sense, some of them cannot be doubted. Such an argument can be proved by his sense of his
own body.
Then, in order to prove such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He concludes in the beginning passages of "Meditation Two" that such a "pronouncement 'I am, I
exist' is necessarily true every time [he] utter[s] it or conceive[s] it in [his] mind" (13).
Based on the conclusion that "I am something" or "I am; I exist – that is certain" (15), Descartes
explores his Cogito argument in "Meditation Two". First of all, another question immediately
follows such a conclusion: if such something – "I" – necessarily exists, what it is? Or what is such
an "I"? Descartes first shows the evolution of his own meditations about this question. He once
divided "I" into "the body" and "the soul", the latter of which refers to "a rarefied I–know–not–
what", "the power of self–motion, [...] of sensing or of thinking", or "some supremely powerful and
[...] malicious deceiver" (14). Nevertheless, he not only shows his current "discovery": "thought
exists; it alone cannot be separated from me"; but also claims: "I am a true thing and am truly
existing", "I am [...] a thinking thing; that is, a mind, or intellect, or understanding, or reason" (15).
Then, by taking his perception of a piece of wax as an example, Descartes aims to prove his Cogito
argument: "I am" "[a] thing that thinks. [...] A thing that doubts, understands, affirms, denies, wills,
refuses, and that also imagines and senses" (15). In comparing the differences of his perceptions of
the same piece of wax at room temperature and being heated – "clos[ing] to the fire", Descartes
observes two different

Buddhism : The True Reality Of Reality And The Achievement...
Although Buddhism schools vary on the exact way to enlightenment, each one fits the same
explanation as using a path of practice that leads to insight into the true nature of reality and the
achievement of enlightenment. According to Vasubandhu's Twenty Verses on Consciousness Only
(n.d.), we have to distinguish between the reality that we construct by our ordinary consciousness,
such as our imagination and reality as it is in itself, in its "suchness". Buddhism wants us to see
things as they really. Anyone who is enlightened sees the nature of reality clearly, just as it is and not
as it is in our consciousness. The Buddhist teachings also state that reality includes two different
conditions, impermanence, and no–self. What we see during our everyday existence, our human
reality of things is not permanent. Rather, it is always dependent upon something else in order to
realize its existence. If one factor of something is gone, then it will no longer exist. There needs to
be a realization that emptiness is the true reality and the everyday human constructs of reality that
come from our human mind are not. As a result, there is an evident connection between the concept
of reality and emptiness in Buddhism. Emptiness is the basic concept in Buddhism, both Mahayana
and Zen, which teaches that all things are independent. It is also a way of looking at an experience.
As humans, we often add presumptions to things in order to make sense of them and the world we
live in. However,

The Similarities Between April And Hercules
It is important to know for a person to know their true identity because, true identity defines
someone's personality and their character. It is important for a person to know this because it gives
that person a sense of who they really are instead of what they are acting like their identity is. True
identity is what their real image is, and not what that person wants it to be. So, true identity is very
important to find in their life. In Hercules, Hercules thinks that his identity is strong because of his
god like strength, but people will not accept him, and in the short film, April is acting like everyone
wants her to act like and not show her true identity.

Analysis: When It Comes The Freedom Of A Christian By...
When it comes The Freedom of a Christian, Martin Luther is trying to explain the corruption in the
Roman Church. He goes about this in many different ways, but mostly by criticizing that the Church
is not living a true Christian life. Luther explains that the Pope is pretty much only worried about
advancing his own personal gain, and not the people that follow and support him. Luther goes on to
explain that the only thing a Christian needs to do to live a true Christian life is to follow the Word
of God, and do what comes along with it.
One of Martin Luther's most recognized quotes is "One thing, and only one thing, is necessary for
Christian life, righteousness, and freedom. That one thing is the most holy Word of God, the gospel
of Christ" (Luther, pg 9). When I start to think about this quote I think that Martin Luther is trying to
convey to Christians that the Roman Church is corrupt, and that they quit caring about other
Christians and are only worrying about themselves. Luther is trying to get the word out to other
Christians and tell them that the only thing you need to do to live a true Christian life is to follow the

Plato's Allegory Of The Cave
Knowledge and reality are ideas that mankind have struggled with for centuries. In Plato's book, The
Republic, he tackles both ideas through many analogies. Plato encourages people to question their
own perception of knowledge and reality. Plato challenges mankind to assess what true knowledge
is and how that compares to their reality. In Plato's Republic, knowledge is defined as something
that must be universal and clear, and using this definition, it can be asserted that knowledge and
reality are not the same. In the allegory of the cave, reality is different between both groups. While
everyone in the cave has their own understanding of reality, the person that leaves has more
knowledge than those who remain, thus showing the stark contrast between knowledge and reality.
In Plato's allegory of the cave analogy, the prisoners cooped up in the den have but only one
conception of reality but not true knowledge. To them, reality is shadows made by people and or
objects passing by a fire. In the analogy, Plato decides to free one of the prisoners. Once freed, he is

The Meditations By Rene Descartes
René Descartes main goal in the Meditations is to establish that one exists and that a perfect God
exists. However, he first argues that the idea that everything perceived around one could be false
because the senses are sometimes deceiving. In the first Meditation, Descartes introduces skepticism
and brings forth a method of doubt in which he evaluates his beliefs, and questions whether they are
true or false and why they should be doubted. He presents various hypothesis that prove there is
reason to doubt the knowledge that one is already aware of. In Meditations one, Descartes considers
his present knowledge and mentions that there are a number of falsehoods he has believed during his
life, so he begins to doubt the knowledge he has obtained from these falsehoods. Essentially, he is
starting over again from the "original foundations" because there is reason to doubt of the things he
knows. He has to build his knowledge again by accepting only the things he is certain about.
Descartes presents the hypothesis of the senses and admits that everything he believes is true has
been because of the senses. He says, "[h]owever, I have noticed that the senses are sometimes
deceptive; and it is a mark of prudence never to place our complete trust in those who have deceived
us even once" (Ariew, Watkins 41). We should be doubtful of our senses because sometimes
perception can be deceiving. The senses have already tricked us so it is likely to happen again. For

Aquinas 's Investigation Into What Is Truth
Aquinas's investigation into "what is truth" is systematic from the beginning. As opposed to earlier
attempts, Aquinas's strategy is not to start from the everyday usage of the term truth, but to start
from examining the very structure of the concept. The concept of truth is completely satisfied and
readily identifiable as one of the reinterpreted Thomistic transcendentals which find their roles only
in relation to human soul and being. In the first article of the first question of De Veritate, Aquinas
states that verum is "the mode ... that is common, and consequent upon every being." According to
Aquinas, every concept of the human intellect is acquired by addition to ens, which the intellect first
conceives as, in a sense, the best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unum expresses undividedness of being in itself. Aliquid expresses that being is divided from
others, bonum that it corresponds to the appetitive power, and verum that it corresponds to the
knowing power. The term verum ultimately expresses the common aspect of real beings which the
term being does not express and the aspect is that any being corresponds to the knowing power of
the soul. From this argument, two points are confirmed. First, the term verum corresponds to a real
aspect which belongs to a real being. Second, the aspect of being which verum expresses is not
special but common to all beings. The first element is the reality of verum and the second verum's
transcendentalism. Aquinas's basic understanding of truth of being is that it is real and
transcendental.
For Verum to be understood as real and transcendental, it means that it is not categorical. But
Aquinas says that the aspect of being which verum expresses is the correspondence of a being to the
knowing power. However, if "correspondence" is a kind of relation, verum would not be
transcendental but categorical, because it expresses a special mode of being, i.e., being ad aliquid.
Aquinas's theory of truth as transcendental is consistent in relation to the human intellect. His theory
of transcendental truth is self–sufficient without any relation to the divine intellect. The fact that

because the human brain tends to block out traumatic events in life. This usually happens in war or

Knowledge And Virtue In Meno

  • 1. Knowledge And Virtue In Meno Socrates is known as one of the most prestigious philosophers to ever be alive. In his writing Meno, he tries to figure out or show what knowledge and virtue truly are. Throughout Meno, Socrates uses the argument that knowledge and virtue either are used for good or for evil. The majority of men are good and honorable which always strives for good, but there are some men that want evil and strive for folly. In his argument, Socrates explains that knowledge is something more than just true opinion. His argument explains knowledge as being something that was given to us when we were born. Socrates believes that true knowledge and opinion will always end up giving the correct answer to any sort of issue. When looked at throughout this text, this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So what is the difference between the two? Socrates believed that knowledge was something better than true opinion, which is very true, but I have an even better, slightly different description. I firmly believe that true opinion comes out of the knowledge that we learn. Without knowledge of anything, how can one have an opinion? Socrates thought of knowledge as something that can be true or false. This is another area that I disagree with him on. Knowledge can give you information on all things. You may receive knowledge about beneficial things or you may receive it on something that could be harmful. Either way, it does not make the knowledge false. All knowledge is true; it just may be given for different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Boethius, Consolation of Philosophy: 4.22-29 Shermetrius Mack Art of Living & Dying Professor Oliver Ranner March 3, 2011 Boethius, Consolation of Philosophy: 4.22–29 In this passage Philosophy wants Boethius and the reader to understand that fortune does not truly bring a person true happiness. In its realistic form, fortune is a never–ending spinning wheel that gives and takes away fortune at any moment it time. Thus, one should never confuse fortune with true happiness because true happiness cannot be taken away. According to philosophy, in its truest form pure happiness is embedded within each person (i.e. God) either detached, or attached goods of fortune is not true satisfaction because what fortune may bring to a person is not more valuable then that person itself. Since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The case of martyrs disproves Fortune because it birthed happiness as being true happiness: they are able to be happy even seeking death, which would seem to bring an end to all Fortune based happiness. Therefore, the form of happiness must not be linked to Fortune. The good that fortune brings is an instable illusion of happiness rather than true happiness and the ignorance of how fortune is providing happiness because it makes you blind to your own reality and what people consider being happiness. Fear of losing things and encountering misfortune in turn kills you because it has poisoned you mine to become so dependent on them that when they leave people fall into depression thus become unfilled which show the true illusion that fortune falsely portrays true ... • 5. Peter Unger's Argument Against Skepticism Analysis Critique against Unger's Argument for Skepticism Do you ever wonder if you know anything? In his argument for skepticism, Peter Unger, states that "nobody ever knows anything to be so" (Unger, Pg. 42). If this were to be true, can one be certain that one knows things about oneself, the world one lives in, and about others? In fact, through the use of different methods, one can indeed know things about oneself, the world one lives in, and about others, which is why Peter Unger's argument for skepticism can't be true. In order to understand Unger's argument and why it can't be true, one must first understand what knowledge, skepticism, and Unger's argument and reasons for skepticism. According to the justified true belief, knowledge is something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Utilizing the five senses in order to know something about oneself, the world one lives in, and others usually works, but our senses sometimes deceive us. For example, when light is refracted in a certain way, our brain leads us to believe that the thing such as a pencil is bent. Once we take the object out of the water, however, we can clearly see that it was not bent. Additionally, one can never be absolutely certain that what one knows about others is true. For example, one might think that they know the favorite color of another individual to be blue, but be wrong as the other individuals favorite color is actually green. Even though one cannot always know with certainty if one know things to be so, one can always know some things to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Why Is Knowledge Considered A Belief? It is human nature to ask the "why" question. As soon as humans are able to speak for the most part, the first question we all start asking is "why." "Why" is the sky blue, "Why" does the sun rise in the east and set in the west. "Why" is the number one question for the study of knowledge and how it can be acquired. In order to have "knowledge" you must understand how you to achieve that knowledge through truth, belief and justification. The next couple of questions that are asked are usually "what is knowledge?" and "why is knowledge considered a belief?" The study of knowledge (logos) or better known as Epistemology focuses on the investigation to differentiate between the justified beliefs from opinion. Knowledge is considered a belief because our experiences, what we see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. This breaks down into three distinct conditions. The first of the three says that one must believe that the statement is true and the second says that the statement is in fact true and third the person is justified in believing the statement that was provided to be true. Therefore, knowledge is a justified true belief. Knowledge needs to be a justified belief. Knowledge needs to hold some truth, otherwise it is false. However, knowledge cannot always be a true belief. Speech acts are a big deal in the search for knowledge. "Knowledge that" and "Knowledge how are two of the biggest speech acts in Philosophy. For example in mathematics, it is KNOWN THAT 2+2=4 but there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Aristotle, Heraclitus claims that "the same thing both is and is not," and this would imply that contraries belong to the same subject simultaneously. Heraclitus denies our ability to establish truth, and questions the reliability of knowledge: for Aristotle; serious philosophical consideration must be given to such skepticism, because the logical conclusion of this position has undesirable effects on metaphysical discussion. First philosophy (or metaphysics) investigates the system of principles underlying the study of being (viz. beings as being), and the philosopher should be able to state the principle that permits the education of all things. According to Aristotle, the principle of demonstration must first be examined, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In any event, the act of showing someone that something is (or is not) reduces the argument to the basic source for any demonstration, that is, any proof is reduced to the ultimate position (i.e. the initial cause for demonstration). In essence, the principle cannot be demonstrated by virtue of deduction; if it could be deduced from another axiom, then it would not be the first principle. Moreover, if the principle could be demonstrated, then "all things" would be subject to demonstration, as Heraclitus seems to believe. However, to demand demonstration (in the strict sense) would beg the question, because it would lead to an infinite regress and there would still be no demonstration. If the same thing both is and is not, then, for instance, a being can both exist and not exist simultaneously, and the same thing can both be true and not be true simultaneously. To say that the same thing both is and is not is to deny the first principle, and to refuse to be consistent (or follow any logical truth). According to Aristotle, Heraclitus' way of thinking is marked by circular reasoning inasmuch as any rational being implicitly recognize the principle as self–evident, and to ... • 11. Storytelling And Memory In The Things They Carried The novel The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is about the emotional effects the war has on soldiers and the reality vs expectation upon soldiers. O'Brien tells this story from his perspective as a young man and how he struggles with even the idea of war. He talks about what soldiers overcome throughout it. O'Brien describes what it is like for the soldiers to always have a constant worry that they could die at any time and not go home to their family. In the chapter "Speaking of Courage" social obligation takes a big part, O'Brien talks about his friend Norman getting back to his home. Norman is driving around his town and thinks, "They were for common calor. The routine, daily stuff– just humping, just enduring– but that was worth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... O'Brien talks about never knowing if a war story is true or not. O'Brien stats, "In war you lose your sense of definite, hence your sense of truth itself, and therefore it's safe to say that in a true war story nothing is ever absolutely true." (O'Brien 70). This quote shows storytelling and memory because O'Brien is saying that war stories can not always be true, or only parts if it can be. During the war everything is different, the truth could be the truth of how someone took it in, not what actually happened. Some war stories may even seem pointless often times. "Often in a true war story there is not even a point, or else the point doesn't hit you until twenty years later..." (O'Brien 78). This quote shows storytelling and memory because it is saying that stories being told do not usually have a point, so even if the story is true it does not really matter because there is no point to it. Usually the story they tell, they only tell it because they remember it. O'Brien throughout the novel states that there is never a true war story, but no one really knows what parts are true: "You can tell a true war story by the questions you ask. Somebody tells a story, let's say, and afterward you ask, 'Is it true?' and if the answer matters, you've got your answer." (O'Brien 79). This shows storytelling and memory because he is saying that to tell if it is true or not you have to think if the answer matters. If the answer matters the story is probably not true, because what war story depends on a kind of truth like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Martin Luther On Moralism When it comes The Freedom of a Christian, Martin Luther is trying to explain to the people what it truly means to have faith in God. Luther believed that having true faith would save you, and that indulgences had nothing to do with being saved from purgatory. Faith is showing people that you want to live by the Word of Christ, and not by what the Roman Church is telling them to do. Martin Luther goes on to explain in The Freedom of a Christian, what it means to be a Christian. To be a Christian to Martin Luther it meant that you have to show true faith in the almighty Lord. Luther believes that faith is the most important thing when it comes to living a true Christian life. He believes that as long as you have a real belief in God, that a person will begin to spread the Word of God. Luther says, "Faith redeems, corrects, and preserves our consciences so that we know the righteousness does not consist in works, although works neither can nor ought to be wanting" (Luther pg. 24). This helps explain what Luther really thought about faith, he believed that once you have true faith, then one will begin to do what comes along with living a Christian life. Martin Luther helps explain faith to other Christians around the world by using his Three power of faiths. The first power of faith talks about how the relationship goes with God, and it means that God only has promises and commandments. The second power faith means that when one has true faith one will begin to put more trust ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Pros And Cons Of Friendship Imagine this: you are feeling down because you have an issue with your family and you need someone to talk to but there is nobody. The problem will get worse and worse, generating more sadness and self–hate. This is the scenario of a person who does not have a true friend to talk with. Friendship has a big impact on the well–being of a teenager. In this essay, I will discuss the positives and negatives of a teenage friendship. 1) A friendship is a type of relationship with a person peer or more there is no limit. A true friendship has full support and trusts each other with any problems or ideas. Most of all you spend the most of your time with friends than other things as you with people for everything in your whole life. Friendship may give you good and bad times. A good sign of positive right true friendship is when a friend respects you with your ideas and accepts your thoughts while you talk to them in a positive truthful way. Another one is a negative bad friendship which is a friend that wants you to stay with them forever, never lets you mix you with people as the friend thinks they own you and you all theirs. This is usually when they care about you, which is a good thing, but everyone can't only keep only one friend in their life as they need a variety of friends for different things in life. • 17. Love Is A Distinct Feeling Love is very distinct feeling. However, the word love is difficult to define and understand. It is one of the most important aspects in every human's life. In my opinion, love is utterly unconditional and is between many people, pets, or even things. Love is very important feeling that everyone should have. Everyone should show love and receive love, as it is one of the most powerful forces in the world. Love can be felt for family members, friends, pets, lifeless objects, partners, and many more. You know that bittersweet feeling you get when you are with someone special. When your heart is beating out of your chest, and you get the butterflies in the bottom of your stomach when they reach for your hand. That is what I consider love in a relationship between two unrelated people. Between partners, love should be a relationship of understanding each other, showing respect to one another, and being compassionate towards each other. True love for a couple should be unconditional. I definitely believe in true love, as I have had many great experiences with love. For example, in September of 2013 I met a handsome guy named Dillon and we started dating. He has shown me what true love is. He loves me unconditionally whether I am sick, in a bad mood, in a great mood, or having a horrible day. He makes me exceptionally happy and I love spending my time with him. He always tells me, "If I'm not making you happy, then I'm not doing my job." He is what keeps me going from day to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Reliable Characters In The Film Inception, By Christopher... Christopher Nolan creates the main protagonist of Inception, Cobb, as an unreliable narrator. Cobb questions his own reality throughout the film. Due to this questioning, Cobb is never entirely sure that the life he is living is reality or a dream. Understanding the plight of Cobb helps the viewer understand what true judgment is. True judgment, according to Socrates, is correct judgment accompanied by 'knowledge' of the differentness. This means that to form a true judgment, a person must have a correct perception of a thing. He or she must also be able to compare this thing with another thing and understand the differences between the two. This is also called logic. Cobb constantly uses logic to figure out if he is a dream or not. Many times ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fact Verses Fiction in O'Brien's The Things They Carried "The difference between fairy tales and war stories is that fairy tales begin with 'Once upon a time,' while war stories begin with 'Shit, I was there!'" (Lomperis 41). How does one tell a good war story? Is it important to be accurate to the events that took place? Does the reader need to trust the narrator? In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien examines what it takes to tell a good war story. In the chapter "Speaking of Courage" Norman Bowker claims that he is responsible for his friend's death. However, in the chapter "In the Field" O'Brien places the blame on an unnamed young soldier who started the enemy attack by turning on his flashlight. Which story is true? Does it matter what is true? According to Jim Neilson, the story of Kiowa's death "evokes the notion that for the U.S. Vietnam was a quagmire; his drowning functions almost emblematically to suggest America's deepening entanglement in southeast Asia" (193). Whatever the meaning behind Kiowa's story, it certainly fits the requirements for a good war story: there is nothing redeemable in it. Maria Bonn sees the three stories about Kiowa's death ("Speaking of Courage," "Notes," and "In the Field") as exemplifying "O'Brien's relentless investigation of how to tell a true war story" (paragraph 39). When you look at all three of these chapters together you can see the progression from what is imagined to what is true or is it the other way around? With Tim O'Brien, it is never clear. The chapter "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" is another questionable narrative. The reader learns in the first paragraph that the narrator, Rat Kiley, is not known for his accurate story telling ability. "Rat had a reputation for exaggeration and overstatement, a compulsion to rev up the facts" (O'Brien 89). The protagonist, Tim ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Quindlen conveys, "My great journalistic contribution to my family is that I write obituaries. First my mother's, 22 years ago, listing her accomplishments: two daughters, three sons. • 25. Taking a Look at Skepticism Philosophy Paper Skepticism is an aspect of philosophy that has been studied throughout history. Within the realm of skepticism lies the difference between knowledge and mere true belief. Descartes and Moore are two philosophers who explore the existence of an external world in their writings. In Descartes' "Meditations" and Moore's "Proof of an External World," we find opposing viewpoints on what we actually have knowledge on. A mere true belief is an opinion that happens to be true. It is simply a belief that is true by accident or luck. Someone can hold a true belief that is completely baseless or even completely by luck as it requires no experience, only that the belief is supported by reality. Knowledge requires truth and belief. One must believe the thing that they "know." Someone with knowledge can give an account of why his or her true opinion is in fact true. In Descartes' first meditation, he invokes the possibility that we might be tricked by a "malignant demon" in order to show that we have no knowledge of an external world. He states, "I will suppose then, not that Deity, who is sovereignly good and the fountain of truth, but that some malignant demon, who is at once exceedingly potent and deceitful, has employed all his artifice to deceive me; I will suppose that the sky, the air, the earth, colors, figures, sounds, and all external things, are nothing better than the illusions of dreams, by means of which this being has laid snares for my ... This is a way of saying that nothing at all matters more to how an individual should act than their own honour, that they should be true to themselves and not engage in self– deception. Being true to one's self also means to act in accordance with who an individual is, what they believe in and what they value the most in life. The need to be true to one's self is at the upmost importance in society as this will cause an individual to truly achieve true personal happiness and self–fulfillment. The quote is showing how Hamlet questions whether it is better to be alive or dead. • 29. True Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee As people rush from a burning building, smoke filling the blue brushed sky, a man runs in to save a child stuck under a fallen support beam. Is this "true courage"? What is true courage? True courage could be defined as a way or feeling that prompts someone to do something and makes that person able to do it. How do people display true courage? What are ways they are able to display true courage? In fact, there are three main ways that people are able to express true courage. These three ways are confronting, acting, and doing the right thing. This may seem pretty easy; however, many people do not actually show true courage. Confronting, ya it may seem easy and may seem like anyone can do it; however, not everyone does it. Now people may think that confronting requires a person to confront, that is not the case. People are able to confront life problems as well as people. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, the main character, Scout Finch or Jean Louise Finch, confronts many things in the book. • 31. Plato 's View On Philosophers Plato is a philosopher; however, in "Plato's Republic," Plato's view on philosophers within society is rather unorthodox compared with others who study philosophy. This is due to Plato's views of individuals each having different skills they are naturally good at; he states that only true philosophers will be fit to rule. All others who attempt to rule will create terrible consequences for a city. The people shun philosophers because they are lovers of knowledge and are perceived to be different from them. The majority of people in a city are not lovers of knowledge but rather lovers of beauty. Referencing "Plato's Republic, each person has a different skill they are naturally good at. Knowing this, philosophers must be naturally good at thinking and arguing. However, a good and great ruler needs more than these traits; a true ruler will have to be "those who love the sight of truth."(475d). Given that statement, those who love the sight of the truth are true philosophers that have a love for knowledge, opposed to having a love for beauty, sight, and sound. Furthermore, a true philosopher must love the ideas behind things as well as the objects themselves, not just one part. Whereas lovers of sight only love things that appear beautiful versus a lover of knowledge who loves and appreciates beauty in its entirety. In order for one to be a true ruler, one has to be a true philosopher. To be a true philosopher means to have a love for knowledge and wisdom. A lover of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Just because many people believe in one thing does not make that thing true. For example, many people believe mermaids or bigfoot are real and both of those things have been proven to not be true. Some more realistic things that are believed to be true but are not are: the five–second rule, only 10 percent of the brain is used, carbohydrates make you gain weight, bats are blind, and it takes seven years for swallowed gum to digest. These things have been proven to be false with some research and tests. If a piece of food is dropped and has only been on the ground for five seconds, that does not mean that that piece of food is okay to eat. True friendship is a long lasting often lifetime journey of sharing each other's joys and sorrows by just being there for each other without thinking of yourself. Of Mice and Men is a book that tells how two very different men bond together in friendship while traveling together as farm laborers. This lack of positivity shows that George and Lennie's relationship will not remain a true friendship. Those who argue that George and Lennie's relationship is not an example of true friendship would state that it lacked positive qualities for George as being with Lennie was more trouble than George could take. George and Lennie had to keep moving from job to job as Lennie kept getting into trouble. George was furious, "I got you! You can't keep a job and lose me ever' job I get. You do bad things and I got to get you out. (Steinbeck p11). If George was alone, he could live easier and not have to deal with always having to get Lennie out of trouble. Lennie consumed all the joy of the friendship with always getting into trouble and did not have a true friendship with George. George and Lennie's relationship is a true friendship even though is has its ups and downs. • 39. Overview Of Plato And Plato's Theory Of The Four Forms Throughout history, many philosophers have discussed the question: is human behavior driven by the mind (logic) or is it driven by a greater force (soul)? This question has been a major topic of many philosophical discussions. This debate has caused many philosophers to give potential answers to the problem, yet no one agrees on one idea. Of these potential answers, two well–known ones are Plato's Theory of Forms and Aristotle's Theory of the Four Causes. Despite their common focus on knowledge, the two philosophers differ in their beliefs in how knowledge is obtained. Plato places a bigger emphasis on the soul being the source of true knowledge, while Aristotle argues that true knowledge comes from logic and reason. Of the two, Aristotle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... True knowledge is information that cannot be refuted or even argued against. In his mind, true knowledge is absolute truth. Plato uses his Theory of the Forms to explain the nature of everything in existence. In "Phaedo," Plato gives the example of why a beautiful person or a beautiful object truly has beauty. Plato argues "that if anything is beautiful besides absolute beauty it is beautiful for no other reason than because it partakes of absolute beauty; and this applies to everything" (Phaedo 100c). In order for people to identify something that is beautiful, we must have a general understanding of beauty as an abstract concept. This means that people have the ability to identify a person or object as beautiful because the person or object is participating in the general form of beauty. This general form of beauty cannot be seen nor change; it is unlike people and objects in the visible world which can lose their beauty. Just as with the idea of beauty, Plato argues that his Theory of Forms applies to all of reality of stating that there is a form for every concept that there exists. These forms are eternal and unchanging, unaffected and unhindered by the ever–changing nature of the visible world. The ambiguity of the concept of the forms in Plato's Theory of Forms lessens the strength of Plato's overall argument. Plato uses the concept of the forms as the basis of many of his ... Concepts Of Knowledge, Reality And Existence The word philosophy derives from Greece, meaning "love of wisdom" and is the study of the basic concepts of knowledge, reality and existence (Dictionary.com, 2014). Someone who studies philosophy is called a philosopher; generally they are an individual who loves wisdom (Price, Lecture 6, 2014). Often said to be the study of questions philosophy raises, what human beings label as "life's big questions," which leads to them pondering life on a bigger scale. Philosophers ask a lot of questions and they are looking to answer questions they, personally, have about life. People study philosophy because they want to discover and understand the truth about themselves as an individual, the truth about the world that they live in and their relationships relating to the world and others in it. Philosophy is broken up into three concepts; "an activity, a set of attitudes and a body of content" (Knight, 2006). The body of content concept of philosophy is known as "epistemology, metaphysics and axiology" (Cohen, 2014). Epistemology is the study of "the nature of truth and knowledge" (Knight, 2006). Metaphysics is the study of questions relating to reality. Axiology is "the study of questions of value" and also includes the concepts of ethics and aesthetics (Knight, 2006). Harry Frankfurt realizes this and devotes an entire book on distinguishing the importance of bullshit as well as several characteristics of the term in On Bullshit. One thing pointed out in this book is that the term humbug is sufficient enough to describe everything that the term bullshit pertains to; therefore, for the purposes of this paper the terms humbug and bullshit will both be used when referring to bullshit. This Forester 2 indicates that they have knowledge that what they are saying is not necessarily true; therefore, their lack of consideration for what is true shows that they have no intention to tell the truth, or that they intentionally deceive through means of humbug. This would indicate that Frankfurt's assertion that the humbugger is intentionally deceiving is true; however, he himself indicates at the end of the book that his sincerity to define a word is bullshit in itself. His logical approach to explaining that bullshit is merely a cover for the lack of knowledge that we have on the word. To say that we know now what the term bullshit means would be humbug itself. • 45. The Interconnectedness Of Knowledge By Rene Descartes And... The Interconnectedness of Knowledge René Descartes and William James take two opposing views in an attempt to answer the question of what true knowledge is. Descartes takes the perspective of a foundationalist, and James takes a coherentist approach when trying to answer this question. A foundationalist is someone who believes that there is an indubitable proposition in which all other knowledge receives justification from. This method of thought is often referred to as The Pyramid, because the tip of the pyramid represents a belief that an agent knows with no possibility of doubt, and all other beliefs expand from that indubitable claim, similar to how a pyramid expands from the smallest point. On the other hand, a coherentist believes that pieces of knowledge are justified on such a basis that they cohere with a comprehensive system of beliefs that mutually support each other. Coherentism can be referred to as The Raft, because it represents our body of knowledge as a raft that is floating free from any anchor. When replacing a piece of the raft, you stand on one side and fix the other, similarly, when replacing a piece of knowledge, you work from the other claims you have in order to fix the claim being doubted. Both Descartes and James use their respective approaches in order to answer the question of what humans can be said to know. • 47. Intrinsic Value And Extrinsic Value Essay In philosophy, things, properties, and acts contain values. They would fall into three categories of value: intrinsic value, extrinsic value, and both intrinsic and extrinsic value. Things containing intrinsic value means people value those things with intrinsic value for its own reason (Zimmerman). In contrast, things containing extrinsic value means the value of these things are depending on other things but not by itself. This is the basic difference between intrinsic value and extrinsic value. In addition, knowledge is extrinsic valuable in general, but some kinds of knowledge can also be intrinsic valuable. Also, Knowledge is more extrinsic valuable than a true belief because it provides a higher possibility for an agent to succeed in pursuing his/her goals (Pritchard 13). Intrinsic Value (Non Instrumental Value) Intrinsic value has also been named as non–instrumental value. The general understanding of non– instrumental value is that a thing is valuable for its own sake and its value is not related to other things. Zimmerman explains the intrinsic value by using the example of the conversation with someone. He says that suppose person A asks person B that whether helping people is good or not; B will answer that helping others is good. Then, A keeps asking that why it is good; B might response that it is just good by fulfilling others' needs. After that, A can still ask B that why fulfilling others' needs is good. Descartes's Cogito argument is actually stimulated by the "numerous" "false opinions" (9) in "Meditation One", which he believed true in his youth but now doubts and attempts to attack through his own writing. Descartes's doubts involve three stages. The first doubt concerns sense illusion. In other words, Descartes formerly maintained that we obtained truth "either from the senses or through the senses" (10). He declares that senses can sometimes deceive us, but in a sense, some of them cannot be doubted. Such an argument can be proved by his sense of his own body. Then, in order to prove such ... He concludes in the beginning passages of "Meditation Two" that such a "pronouncement 'I am, I exist' is necessarily true every time [he] utter[s] it or conceive[s] it in [his] mind" (13). Based on the conclusion that "I am something" or "I am; I exist – that is certain" (15), Descartes explores his Cogito argument in "Meditation Two". First of all, another question immediately follows such a conclusion: if such something – "I" – necessarily exists, what it is? Or what is such an "I"? Descartes first shows the evolution of his own meditations about this question. He once divided "I" into "the body" and "the soul", the latter of which refers to "a rarefied I–know–not– what", "the power of self–motion, [...] of sensing or of thinking", or "some supremely powerful and [...] malicious deceiver" (14). Nevertheless, he not only shows his current "discovery": "thought exists; it alone cannot be separated from me"; but also claims: "I am a true thing and am truly existing", "I am [...] a thinking thing; that is, a mind, or intellect, or understanding, or reason" (15). Then, by taking his perception of a piece of wax as an example, Descartes aims to prove his Cogito argument: "I am" "[a] thing that thinks. Although Buddhism schools vary on the exact way to enlightenment, each one fits the same explanation as using a path of practice that leads to insight into the true nature of reality and the achievement of enlightenment. According to Vasubandhu's Twenty Verses on Consciousness Only (n.d.), we have to distinguish between the reality that we construct by our ordinary consciousness, such as our imagination and reality as it is in itself, in its "suchness". Buddhism wants us to see things as they really. Anyone who is enlightened sees the nature of reality clearly, just as it is and not as it is in our consciousness. The Buddhist teachings also state that reality includes two different conditions, impermanence, and no–self. What we see during our everyday existence, our human reality of things is not permanent. Rather, it is always dependent upon something else in order to realize its existence. If one factor of something is gone, then it will no longer exist. There needs to be a realization that emptiness is the true reality and the everyday human constructs of reality that come from our human mind are not. As a result, there is an evident connection between the concept of reality and emptiness in Buddhism. Emptiness is the basic concept in Buddhism, both Mahayana and Zen, which teaches that all things are independent. It is also a way of looking at an experience. As humans, we often add presumptions to things in order to make sense of them and the world we live in. However, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. The Similarities Between April And Hercules It is important to know for a person to know their true identity because, true identity defines someone's personality and their character. It is important for a person to know this because it gives that person a sense of who they really are instead of what they are acting like their identity is. True identity is what their real image is, and not what that person wants it to be. So, true identity is very important to find in their life. In Hercules, Hercules thinks that his identity is strong because of his god like strength, but people will not accept him, and in the short film, April is acting like everyone wants her to act like and not show her true identity. • 61. Analysis: When It Comes The Freedom Of A Christian By... When it comes The Freedom of a Christian, Martin Luther is trying to explain the corruption in the Roman Church. He goes about this in many different ways, but mostly by criticizing that the Church is not living a true Christian life. Luther explains that the Pope is pretty much only worried about advancing his own personal gain, and not the people that follow and support him. Luther goes on to explain that the only thing a Christian needs to do to live a true Christian life is to follow the Word of God, and do what comes along with it. One of Martin Luther's most recognized quotes is "One thing, and only one thing, is necessary for Christian life, righteousness, and freedom. That one thing is the most holy Word of God, the gospel of Christ" (Luther, pg 9). When I start to think about this quote I think that Martin Luther is trying to convey to Christians that the Roman Church is corrupt, and that they quit caring about other Christians and are only worrying about themselves. Luther is trying to get the word out to other Christians and tell them that the only thing you need to do to live a true Christian life is to follow the Word of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As he starts to talk about how Luther was showing the wrongdoings of the Church the author explains exactly what Luther meant. He explains what Luther meant when talking about how all men are servants to God, but the author helps understand what Luther meant by that saying that when a man begins to have faith in God he begins to preach others the Word of God. The authors says, "By faith he is caught up beyond himself into God. By love he descends beneath himself into his neighbor" (Hampson, pg. 11). I believe that this quote means that when you find your true faith in God, then you want to help other find their true belief in God. So by finding your faith you want to do good works because you want to help others by any means ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. The Inquisitive Toddler: True Or True? Anyone who has interacted with a toddler will inevitably be asked, "But why?". From a person's earliest ages, humans have been wondering and discovering the biggest "Whys" in our universe. In the case of the inquisitive toddler, one would eventually have to say after too fundamental of a question, "I don't know, that's how it is." Whether one is a scientist, trying to figure out the cause of the Big Bang, or a theologian attempting to prove God exists, one has to eventually rely on faith to accept that what they observe is true. Most people see science as a concrete discipline. Scientists use data that they record about the universe to prove things true or not true. This colloquial definition is not the case. • 65. Plato's Allegory Of The Cave Knowledge and reality are ideas that mankind have struggled with for centuries. In Plato's book, The Republic, he tackles both ideas through many analogies. Plato encourages people to question their own perception of knowledge and reality. Plato challenges mankind to assess what true knowledge is and how that compares to their reality. In Plato's Republic, knowledge is defined as something that must be universal and clear, and using this definition, it can be asserted that knowledge and reality are not the same. In the allegory of the cave, reality is different between both groups. While everyone in the cave has their own understanding of reality, the person that leaves has more knowledge than those who remain, thus showing the stark contrast between knowledge and reality. In Plato's allegory of the cave analogy, the prisoners cooped up in the den have but only one conception of reality but not true knowledge. To them, reality is shadows made by people and or objects passing by a fire. In the analogy, Plato decides to free one of the prisoners. Once freed, he is blinded by the light and sees the true objects, but has yet to become accustomed since he has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The freed prisoner, his entire life, has known only one form of reality, and that is his individual perception of reality. Tim O Brien How To Tell A True War Story Analysis In "How to Tell a True War Story," author Tim O'Brien writes about a soldiers patrol invasion into the rural and dangerous jungle areas of Vietnam and partakes in the enemy. This chapter is utilized to teach the reader about the different aspects of reader manipulation and fiction devices to engage the reader in an emotional depth to believe the stories to be true. In this chapter, with the use of his fictional character also named after himself as the narrator, O'Brien narrates that "a true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, no encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain men from doing the things they have always done." This is central to understanding The Things They Carried because wrote in the form of a memoir O'Brien uses fictional devices to challenge the reader to believe each fictional story. Themes of reality vs fiction and belief vs disbelief are presented and apparent in "How to Tell a True War Story". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The title is not meant to give instructions on how to tell a true war story but more so how to tell if a story is true or not. O'Brien wants his readers to understand the thinking process and complexity of how stories are told behind the trauma and pain. Most readers already have a perception of what a war story should sound like and this puts into perspective that it could be in fact, otherwise different. No one likes to hear of the emotion and actual depiction of what goes on at war. Through the analyzation of "How to Tell a True War Story," the reader is able to experience the Things They Carried in a more analytical perspective. • 69. Symbology In William Golding's 'Lord Of The Flies' Piggy symbolises a rope because he holds everyone together. This representation is true because people use rope to tie or hold things together. One quote to show this is "The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down there by the beach." Another way piggy symbolises a rope is that he supports the group. One way he supports the group is taking care of the little ones. In conclusion Piggy symbolises a rope because he holds everyone together and supports the group. Ralph symbolises a toolbox because he is useful for many different things. This representation is true because a toolbox holds many different items thus making it useful for many different tasks. • 73. The Meditations By Rene Descartes René Descartes main goal in the Meditations is to establish that one exists and that a perfect God exists. However, he first argues that the idea that everything perceived around one could be false because the senses are sometimes deceiving. In the first Meditation, Descartes introduces skepticism and brings forth a method of doubt in which he evaluates his beliefs, and questions whether they are true or false and why they should be doubted. He presents various hypothesis that prove there is reason to doubt the knowledge that one is already aware of. In Meditations one, Descartes considers his present knowledge and mentions that there are a number of falsehoods he has believed during his life, so he begins to doubt the knowledge he has obtained from these falsehoods. Essentially, he is starting over again from the "original foundations" because there is reason to doubt of the things he knows. He has to build his knowledge again by accepting only the things he is certain about. Descartes presents the hypothesis of the senses and admits that everything he believes is true has been because of the senses. He says, "[h]owever, I have noticed that the senses are sometimes deceptive; and it is a mark of prudence never to place our complete trust in those who have deceived us even once" (Ariew, Watkins 41). We should be doubtful of our senses because sometimes perception can be deceiving. The senses have already tricked us so it is likely to happen again. For example, putting a ... • 75. Aquinas 's Investigation Into What Is Truth Aquinas's investigation into "what is truth" is systematic from the beginning. As opposed to earlier attempts, Aquinas's strategy is not to start from the everyday usage of the term truth, but to start from examining the very structure of the concept. The concept of truth is completely satisfied and readily identifiable as one of the reinterpreted Thomistic transcendentals which find their roles only in relation to human soul and being. In the first article of the first question of De Veritate, Aquinas states that verum is "the mode ... that is common, and consequent upon every being." According to Aquinas, every concept of the human intellect is acquired by addition to ens, which the intellect first conceives as, in a sense, the best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unum expresses undividedness of being in itself. Aliquid expresses that being is divided from others, bonum that it corresponds to the appetitive power, and verum that it corresponds to the knowing power. The term verum ultimately expresses the common aspect of real beings which the term being does not express and the aspect is that any being corresponds to the knowing power of the soul. From this argument, two points are confirmed. First, the term verum corresponds to a real aspect which belongs to a real being. Second, the aspect of being which verum expresses is not special but common to all beings. The first element is the reality of verum and the second verum's transcendentalism. Aquinas's basic understanding of truth of being is that it is real and transcendental. For Verum to be understood as real and transcendental, it means that it is not categorical. But Aquinas says that the aspect of being which verum expresses is the correspondence of a being to the knowing power. However, if "correspondence" is a kind of relation, verum would not be transcendental but categorical, because it expresses a special mode of being, i.e., being ad aliquid. Aquinas's theory of truth as transcendental is consistent in relation to the human intellect. His theory of transcendental truth is self–sufficient without any relation to the divine intellect. The fact that Aquinas's theory of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. A True War Story Analysis The Vietnam war was a fight that almost lasted fifteen years. With two hundred and eighty two thousand allied deaths. Soldiers dealt with the grueling fear and pain of comrades dying, not knowing if they would live to see their families again. Over twelve thousand miles from home. Tim O'Brien describes the many ways men deal with the uncertain fear and death around them, often in surprising ways. One of the most glorious stories that is in this book would be "How To Tell a True War Story". Tim O'Brien explains everything thing about war. The colors, the smells, the intense feeling. "In any war story, but especially a true one, it's difficult to separate what happened from what seemed to happen. What seems to happen becomes it own happening and has to be told that way." (68). This quote is followed by Tim's angle of Curt Lemon's death. Tim explains how a true war story may not be believable, pictures get jumbled and that moment in time may get erased. True war stories are from a soldier's opinion, not a civilian that was not there. A war story in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are things that cannot be said again, which is why it can be so hard to retell a true war story. A true war story is told through what can be remembered and what is thought to have happened. A lot of the stories in The Things They Carried are told to have been not completely true. This reason is because the human brain tends to block out traumatic events in life. This usually happens in war or battle for soldiers, they see such terrible events that they cannot bare to remember them so the brain just blocks it out. This does not mean they are gone by any means because a certain event could pop up and send the soldier into a freak mode that could place their mind into the war again. This is a part of PTSD.
