Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies And Professional...
In 1990, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), a United States–based organization
which represented over 90% of academic institutions with nurse practitioner (NP) education programs, released
the first set of entry into practice core competencies (Duller, 2013, p .71). Nurse practitioner core competencies
integrate and build upon existing Masters and DNP core competencies and are guidelines for educational programs
preparing NPs to implement the full scope of practice as a licensed independent practitioner ( NONPF, 2011). By
interviewing an advanced nurse practitioner, I will be able to discuss the nine nurse practitioner core competencies
and how they relate to APN practice.
NONPF Core Competencies
The first competency area is scientific foundation competency. This competency critically analyzes data and
evidence for improving advanced nursing practice. Nurse practitioners rely on scientific competency to integrate
research, theory and knowledge into practice. Research of their practice will allow NPs to influence public policy
through participation in professional organizations and in health policy activities at the local, state, national and
international levels (Sherwood, Brown, Fay, & Wardell, 2012, para. 6).
The leadership competency assumes complex and advanced roles to initiate and guide change. Leadership fosters
collaboration of healthcare members to work together to provide quality, safe and effective patient care. An

Nurses Practitioners And Physician Assistants
With advances in medicine, Americans are living longer and with chronic illnesses that require long term medical
maintenance. As the population has grown with patients that are aging and becoming sicker in the process, there
has presented a shortage of physicians to manage this rise in demand. Now, with the passage of new legislation
such as the Affordable Care Act, more patients have access to health care than ever before. Many experts have
suggested increasing the utilization of Nurse Practitioners and Physicians assistants as a cost effective resource to
tackle to rising cost of healthcare amid a physician shortage in America. Several studies have been performed to
assess the viability of these options, to address the advantages and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
NPs are not only moving into increased roles within the acute care hospital setting, but also into roles in the
community as Primary Care Providers (PCPs). The anticipated shortage of physicians to handle an increased
number of aging patients already affects my position as a staff nurse at a hospital. A career in nursing offers
countless paths to further your education, whether it is to become a specialist in a field of practice, foray into
research or to pursue a position as a nurse practitioner. I was interested to learn more information about how
expanding the role of Advanced Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) may relieve shortages of physicians and lessen
the burden on our current healthcare system. Increasing the roles of ACNP would only be feasible if patients are
still receiving quality care while decreasing the cost of healthcare. As a nurse returning to school to further my
education, I would like to know if pursuing a career as an ACNP would be a viable option for me to continue to
interact with patients in an acute care setting in a more specialized role.
Nurse Practitioners as an untapped resource
Nurse Practitioners have been providing primary care since the 1970S, but with recent changes in legislation, they
are able to practice with a greater level of autonomy. This leads many to question whether ACNPs are able to meet
the increasing

Professional Interview : Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies
Professional Interview
There is no better way of learning about a future role or positions, then getting opinions and viewpoints from
someone who has experience your field of study. Having other's viewpoints and critiques can be important to your
decision making process related to pros and cons of that particular field of choice. This enables you to gain
perspective and insight of job duties, and a viewpoint of the real environment.
Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies
Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies are a set of competencies that guides and regulates the scope of practice for
Certified Nurse Practitioners (CNP). Patients and organizations benefit highly from nurses working at the top of
the education in their profession. As a license Advance Professional, education will help innovate and govern our
needs related to patient care, safety, evidence–base practice, and improvement of positive patient outcomes. Nurse
Practitioner Core Competencies consist of Leadership, Quality, Practice Inquiry, Technology/Information Literacy,
Policy, Health Delivery System, Ethics, and Independent Practice Competencies.
Leadership
CNP's role requires leadership qualifications. Therefore, advance practice nurses should be knowledgeable and
demonstrate critical thinking skills. Leadership skills should help foster collaboration, while providing
improvements for cost effective health care. It's important for leaders to be able to initiate change and have
communication skills. Collaboration

Roles of Nurse Practitioners in Healthcare Organizations
The role of a nurse practitioner has changed and progressed over the time since their inception. Nurse practitioners
in today's environments of hospitals and clinics in treating primary care has expanded. Their roles has expanded
that in some states a nurse practitioner can work in a clinic stand–alone without an overseeing physician. Do all
states offer these privileges to nurse practitioners some ask and the answer is no. Some states still have the
requirement that nurse practitioners must be overseen by a physician. In today's environment of physician
shortages this leads to nurse practitioners being limited in the field of scope of primary care. Not a lot of
physicians are going into primary care because of the lack of money that they may earn as a general physician
over as a specialist. This problem has led to the shortage of physicians in the field of general medicine and what
hospitals and clinics are trying to do to remedy the situation by using nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
These organizations see nurse practitioners as a means of filling this void in primary care. Studies have shown that
nurse practitioners deliver a higher quality of care or equal to that of a physician. Clinics in states that allow a
nurse practitioner to practice freely from a physician are able to create openings in areas that physicians typically
would not apply for. These states are seeing more nurse practitioners and physician assistants in rural areas by

Nurse Practitioner Essay
A Nurse Practitioner is a licensed clinical health care provider that possesses comprehensive clinical expertise in
diagnosing and treating health conditions with additional education and skills needed to educate about disease
prevention and health management across the life span. (AANP, 2017). Nurse Practitioners usually work under the
direction of physicians. Millions of Americans are choosing Nurse Practitioners more for their healthcare needs
today. Nurse Practitioners serve to evaluate and diagnose patients, prescribe medications, and bring
comprehensive treatments to the healthcare needs of individuals. (AANP, 2017). This paper will discuss the

In 1965, a pioneer named Loretta Ford and her colleague Dr. Henry Silver developed the first Nurse Practitioner
program at The University of Colorado. (Judd & Sitzman, 2014). Loretta Ford believed that Nurse Practitioners
were a significant way to resolve social and health problems for specific populations across the United States.
(Judd & Sitzman, 2014). Ford promoted Nurse Practitioners to work side–by–side with physicians as an effective
team, to manage patients and utilize health care resources like never before. (Judd & Sitzman, 2014). In 1967, one
of the first masters' degree Nurse Practitioner programs was developed at Boston College. (AANP, 2017). In 1971,
The University of Washington developed the first family Nurse Practitioner programs, and it was called PRIMEX.
(AANP, 2017). In 1973, The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners was developed. (AANP, 2017).
In 1974, The American Nurses Association established the Council of Primary Care Nurse Practitioners, and this
helped to promote the actual role of Nurse Practitioners, making it a legitimate profession. (AANP,

The American Association Of Nurse Practitioners
The largest independent membership organization available exclusively to NPs is the American Association of
Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Besides being a full–service national organization, it also certifies NPs nationally.
The AANP represents all NP specialties and advocates for high–quality healthcare services for patients and their
right to obtain such services from their provider of choice. One of the most significant functions of the AANP is its
involvement in advocacy and government affairs. Over thirty laws benefiting NPs and their patients were passed
with the support of the AANP over the last two years. The AANP has a dedicated federal staff that works with
national policy stakeholders, regulators, members of Congress, and federal agencies to enact laws ranging from
admitting privileges and appropriations to prescriptive authority. (AANP, 2015a). At the local level, there are
organizations acting on a smaller but more personalized scale by providing opportunities for relationship–building
among colleagues. For instance, the South Florida Council of Advanced Practice Nurses (SFCAPN) is a local
assembly of NPs that through collegial relationships provide mutual support, share updates on clinical knowledge,
and provide networking opportunities for its members. (SFCAPN, 2015). Core Competencies and Certification

An Analysis on the Ability of Nurse Practitioners to...
According to the Pearson Report, there is a total of 147,295 Nurse Practitioners throughout the United States
(Pearson, 2009). However, for NPs in some states the battle continues over some forms of prescriptive authority or
physician involvement in NP prescribing, such as the state of Pennsylvania. State regulatory approaches to NP
prescribing range from no authorization for prescribing (in Georgia, 2006 legislation passed which recognized NPs
as prescribers, but the rules have not been approved at the time of this writing) to unencumbered prescriptive
authority (Arizona, DC, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming) (Lugo, O'Grady, Hodnicki & Hanson,
2007).

As a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP) practicing in the state of Pennsylvania, the current prescriptive
authority limits prescribing narcotics to a 72–hour supply. This includes any Schedule II medication regardless of
the patient and their pain regimen. Working under a collaborative practice agreement, the nurse practitioner (NP)
can prescribe chemotherapy, treat and prescribe for most symptoms and side effects the oncology patient may
encounter, but not treat pain with Schedule II narcotics (Leahy, 2007).
Through reviewing the literature, prescriptive authority of controlled substances by NP in Pennsylvania has been
challenging. Many societal issues have influenced the growth of nurse prescriptive practices. The shortage of
providers, particularly for underserved, uninsured populations, has been thoroughly documented (Pearson, 2009).
In the 2007 Pearson Report, there are 39 states that still require the oversight of a physician in writing
prescriptions, and 11 other states including the District of Columbia, which allows independent authority. APNs
lose a feeling of independence when they feel a physician has to oversee what they are prescribing to their
patients. In states in which physician oversight is not required, APN practice can be very independent.

A Career as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner I would like to go into the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner career field. Pediatric Nurse
Practitioners help Pediatricians and other Physicians diagnose and take care of children from infancy to young
adults. I have grown up with ten siblings and many more cousins, so I have learned how to deal with children of
all ages. Also, I have been interested in the medical field since I was a little girl and I have always loved to help
people. I would have liked to be a Pediatrician but I would prefere not be in school for another thirteen years, so I
found that the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner was the perfect career for me. In the mid–twentieth century, doctors
started working with nurses who had "clinical experience" because they needed more people in specialized and
primary care. Health coverage like Medicaid and Medicare were offered to low income women, children, elderly
and disabled people in the mid–1960's. Because of the affordable coverage, more people then requested the need
to have primary care, and because there were not enough doctors to go around to everyone that could afford the
care, the nurses felt that they could take on the important responsibility. The training program for the nurse
practitioners, developed by Nurse Loretta Ford and Doctor Henry Silver, was based on the well being of children
and their families. The growing interest for primary care, according to Ford, was one of the reasons for the
creation of Nurse

Nursing Nurse Practitioner : An Integrative Approach
The specialty for which I was admitted to South University is the Nursing with a specialization in Family Nurse

There are several APRN roles as delineated by the APRN Consensus Model (2008), an advanced practice nurse
can work as a clinical nurse specialist (CNS), certified nurse practitioner (CNP), certified registered nurse
anesthetist (CRNA), and certified nurse midwife (CNM). With the changing health care system and the
diminishing availability of primary care doctors, many patients are seeing Nurses Practitioners and other APRNs

Therefore, their role is considered to be clinical. Patient safety is an essential and vital component of quality
nursing care. It is also a collaborative effort of all health care workers involved with the patient. The Joint
Commission ensures health care organizations and health care providers follow, maintain and provide safe and
effective care of the highest quality and value. Some of the NPSGs (2016) outlined include: Proper identification
of patients, two patient identifiers are required for example patient's name and date of birth, to ensure that the right
patient is getting the right care. Improving staff communication by getting test results to the right staff on time.
NPs promote patient safety in a lot of ways. It is a nurse's professional responsibility to maintain safety and
competency by being a life–long learner, keeping abreast of the changes in health care system through self–
education; reading evidenced based articles that provides up–to–date regarding nursing care, keeping up with
certifications, ensuring licenses are renewed before they expire, wash hands between patient contact, provide
patient education by promptly addressing and detailing concerns that were addressed, coordinating care in a timely
manner, providing holistic and comprehensive approaches to evaluation and management of patient problems.

Limits Of Nurse Practitioners
Because of the current measures, nurse practitioners are not allowed to practice without supervision in some states.
These limits are in place because physicians are concerned that nurse practitioners don't have enough experience
to care for patient without direction. These actions prevent free market competitions which the nurse practitioners
are upset about. However, "The Federal Trade Commission vigorously promotes competition in the health care
industry through enforcement, study and advocacy. Competition in health care markets benefits consumers by
helping to control cost and prices, improve quality of care, promote innovative products, services, service delivery
models, and expand access to health care services and goods" (Ramirez et

Research Question What type of authority should Nurse Practitioners have compared to primary health care
providers?
Starting point
At the beginning of the research process, it was clear that Nurse Practitioners could only prescribe a limited
number of medications. Originally, the plan was to discuss how nurse practitioners can possibly save patient lives
with more prescriptive authority. Prescribing medication is an important part of health care, but it does not
encompass all the duties of a nurse practitioner.
Background Issues and Context
The problem is what type of authority should Nurse Practitioners have? The health of millions of people is at stake
due to the shortage of doctors in our country. The shortage of doctors leads to decreased length of appointment

Nurse Practitioners : Nursing Practitioners
Nurse practitioners (NPs), or Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), play an essential role in the growing
complexity of the healthcare system. Established in the early 1960s, nurse practitioners have served as skilled
clinicians, meeting the healthcare needs of patients as the availability of primary care physicians continued to
decrease. Much like a Primary Care Physician, Nurse Practitioners can serve as a primary health care providers or
specialize in particular areas of health care like family medicine. Many Nurse Practitioners, for instance Family
Nurse Practitioners (FNP), work in collaboration with physicians in hospitals or outpatient facilities, while others
work autonomously in private practices. With their graduate–level education and clinical training, family nurse
practitioners can diagnose illnesses, conduct exams, treat complex health conditions, and prescribe medications.
Family nurse practitioners place a strong emphasis on wellness and prevention, but also provide treatment for
everything from mild ailments to serious conditions affecting any member across the age span. One FNP, in which
the author has had the pleasure to work beside with, is an exceptional staff nurse, clinical instructor, and mentor.

insurance. Doctors receive a base salary equal to 90% of the benchmark. However, the RVUs used to provide the
physician's with incentive pay is unable to be the median benchmark for most APRNs, as they are not always
billing providers. The Incentive pay for advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) usually involves a percentage
of profits after the payment of benefits from the revenues. Unfortunately, if an NP works at a hospital that has a
mission to care for everyone regardless of their ability to pay, the rate of collections is decreased significantly
(Rhodes, Bechtle, & McNett, 2015).
Incentive Payment
However, Carolyn Buppert suggests that a practice includes quality measures and productivity as well as incentive
plans to increase provider and patient satisfaction. This policy states that the NP will receive excess payment of
the work RVU as per the appropriate outcome metrics in the APRN's role, professional organization participation,
publications, and student education. Also, a three–year rolling average as indicated to reduce extreme yearly

When somebody needs to go to the doctor now a days, they might not necessarily see one, it most likely would be
a nurse practitioner. They do the same job as a physician more or less but are a little different in other words, they
are less expensive & they are more hands on, so to speak, being more one on one with the patient & their needs or
wants in dealing with illnesses, broken bones, diseases, common cold, or loss of loved ones. They go further than
a normal physician would. Today, there are over 205,000 nurse practitioners in the united states today (American

The first nurse was formed during the Christian era and their education was passed on orally from generation to
generation, they didn't have to go to a school or have to spend so many hours at a clinic. Females or infants born
with the placenta covering their face were meant to be a nurse or were to work in the medical field. The ideal
nurse was to be selfless, helpful, and sacrificed themselves for others they never put themselves first. Nurse care
was done inside homes unless you had no family in the area then you would take them to the nearest hospital, the
first hospital was established by a woman named Fabiola. During the early years of modern Europe nurses fought
with their patients, stole and lied to them, came to work drunk, and used foul language around their patients while
working. During this time they only worked for a few hours then they

Dismissed as trivial, until finally it becomes what Everybody knows" – William James.
The nursing profession has encountered a multitude of complex changes in recent years. Many of these changes
resulted from events such as restructuring of the health care delivery system, burgeoning technology and health
information, increasing mobility of nurses with in and between countries, escalating multi–generational
workforce, increasing cultural diversity in world and changing population demographics (Anthony, 2006 : Tomey,

Role Of Nurse Practitioners On The Health Industry
Introduction
Definition of Role
Over the last few years, the nation health system has gone through some significant changes. Factors such as rising
costs of healthcare, population increases, aging in the population as well as divergence in the health division has
played a large role in shaping the health industry. Nursing is one of the professions has gone through a paradigm
change in its organization and capabilities, structure and role stipulations (AHRQ, 2015). Nurse Practitioners
(NPs) are registered nurses who receive advanced education and clinical training, in a wide variety of areas that
range from preventive and acute health care services to individuals in all age groups. Nurse practitioner is usually
involved in the direct practice of nursing, care, and medicine. At the same time, majority of nurse practitioners
practice their skills in several different areas but most are in an ambulatory setting as compared to other nursing
roles that are in an acute care setting (AHRQ, 2015).
A nurse practitioner squarely falls under the clinical department of both medicine and nursing. This is because the
primary role of a nurse practitioner is to provide direct care to the patient as well as delegated medical services.
The oversight is done indirectly and directly by a physician. Additionally, a nurse practitioner diagnoses, contains
and manages acute and episodic illnesses. At the same time, they also act as advocates of health promotion and
disease prevention. Other

The Role of Nurse Practitioners in Reducing Healthcare Costs
In the United States, not every individual has the privilege of affording the necessary medical attention.
Socioeconomic status has an impact on the health outcomes of individuals, as a result, many people who are
uninsured go through their daily lives without assisting to a yearly physical or a primary care visit when they feel
ill. This leads to an increase in emergency room visits, which increases healthcare costs. The increased healthcare
expenses are greatly related to the decreased availability of primary care services, and the excessive emergency
room visits. This paper will explore the benefits of allowing nurse practitioners to provide primary healthcare by
delving into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is partly due to the differences in pay for specialists and primary care physicians. With the increased shortage
of primary care professionals, advance practice registered nurses could assume the responsibility and therefore aid
in lowering healthcare costs
There are various ways that nurse practitioners can improve primary care while simultaneously reducing
healthcare costs. According to Naylor and Kurtzman (2010), "the average cost of a nurse practitioner or physician
assistant visit is 20–35 percent lower than the average cost of a physician visit" (p. 895). This could result in
approximate savings of 4.2 million to 8.4 million dollars between the years 2010 and 2020 (Naylor & Kurtzman,
2010, p. 895). Nurse practitioners are able to provide patient centered care geared towards the prevention and
management of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
Economic Factors
In order for individuals to have access to medical services, they must have a method of payment, whether it will be
out of pocket, private insurance, employment based insurance, or government financing. The access to care also
depends on the availability of medical professionals and the accessibility of resources (Bodenheimer & Grumback,
2012, p. 17). Even those who have the privilege of having insurance might not seek care for minor issues due to
various copays and out of pocket payments.

Family Nurse Practitioner Interview Paper
For this assignment, I had the opportunity to interview Samantha Hage De Reyes, family nurse practitioner,
currently working at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) Health Center in Riverside, CA. Family nurse
practitioners are described as health professionals with analytic skills for evaluating and providing evidence–
based, patient–centered care across settings, and advanced knowledge of the health care delivery system (Hamric,
Hanson, Tracy & O'Grady, 2014). My objective was to ask a series of questions pertaining to the role of a family
nurse practitioner, challenges concerning this nursing role, opinions regarding the future of family nurse
practitioners, and more. This interview was conducted over the phone, and it was a valuable opportunity to learn
more about what it means to be a family nurse practitioner and to start thinking about what I want to achieve in my

Samantha stated that initially many people asked her if she chose to be a family nurse practitioner to be a "mini
physician" (S. Hage De Reyes, personal communication, June 22, 2016). In her perspective, it has been an issue to
show others in health care professions that nurses just want to expand their knowledge. She "fights battles every
day" for her patients because of the holes in our health care system (S. Hage De Reyes, personal communication,
June 22, 2016). In her experience, she has seen many individuals without insurance. She has learned that being a
family nurse practitioner is being an advocate for the patient and helping them get the resources that they need.
Family nurse practitioners help provide care in a more affordable way. In Samantha's opinion, family nurse
practitioners are the answer to creating access to care for the large uninsured population and those that are newly
insured under the Affordable Care Act, and I could not agree

Nurse Practitioners as Primary Care Providers
Every individual in the world deserves to enjoy health and wellness. Maintaining or achieving proper health needs
enables individuals to be productive at work and leisure. Traditionally, many people have had barriers obtaining
adequate healthcare due to economic constraints or personal inconveniences. Despite impressive technological
advances in medicine, the challenge of delivering quality healthcare to the Americans continues to be debated
amongst the nation's political and healthcare leaders. The aging baby–boomers and the increased number of
uninsured people add to the equation of population growth which results in limited access to primary healthcare

Often times, the retail clinics are located near the patients' homes and offer unconventional office hours. Operating
every day of the week, patients are usually seen as walk–ins with minimal wait times. Prescriptions can also be
immediately filled while they shop for grocery or personal care items in the drug store. Moreover, the cost for the
efficient quality care is relatively small compared to that of visiting primary care physicians' practices. A usual
visit to the retail clinic can run between forty to seventy dollars depending on the depth of the service.
Convenience care clinics that are purposely designed to be housed in retail stores with high traffic volume have
existed to accommodate the public's quest for convenience and wellness (Hansen–Turton et al., n.d.).
Although the retail clinics are fairly a new concept, the family nurse practitioners strictly adhere to the profession's
scope of practice and established protocols set forth in each retail company. The scope of practice for nurse
practitioners however differs from state to state. This lack of consistency creates a hindrance to the fullest
potential that the NPs can practice in certain states. Regardless, all NPs in every state are eligible for direct
Medicaid reimbursement and Medicare Part B services according to the 1997 Balanced Budget Act (Hansen–
Turton et al., n.d.). With or without the physician's oversight, the FNPs practice safe care within their advanced

An Application For Cbu 's Nurse Practitioner
Former U.S. Representative for Texas, Solomon Ortiz, once stated "Education is the key to success in life, and
teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students." For my capstone project, my team and I chose to
develop an application for CBU's School of Nursing. Our capstone project attempts to prove Ortiz correct by
providing CBU's Nurse Practitioner students with an educational application that prepares them for success in
their health care environment and providing CBU's Nurse Practitioner professors with the tools to make lasting
impacts on their students. To make the utmost impact, our capstone team began by carefully eliciting the

colleagues. They are provided the chance to live out and share the gospel.
In a global context, our capstone project will also have a social impact by providing any university with real–life
experience for their students. Students will have the chance to enter their work environment with more preparation
and comfort. They will also be able to receive feedback from their patients so that they can improve upon their
interactions with patients. Ultimately, this will lead to higher satisfaction for patients and hospitals. Our project
can provide the health care system with more satisfaction among patients and improved analytical skills among
Nurse Practitioners. Our capstone project also has a major economic impact on the local community and in a
global context. In the local community, we are providing free software for CBU's Nurse Practitioner professors
and students to utilize. From prior research for developing our capstone project, we discovered that the hospital

Role Of The Family Nurse Practitioner
The Role of the Family Nurse Practitioner in Advanced Nursing Practice Although advanced nursing practice is a
broad field with several roles defined within, the author of this essay has identified the role of the Family Nurse
Practitioner (FNP) as the focus for this assignment. The FNP role was selected as it is the specialty track in which
the author is furthering his professional nursing education. The Family Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse
(RN) who possesses advanced clinical training, skills, and competencies acquired through the completion of a
Master's or Doctoral nursing degree in order to provide family–centered primary care to individuals across the
lifespan. (American Association of Nurse Practitioners [AANP], 2015). Family Nurse Practitioners practice
independently in several states, although some states require that a collaborative agreement with a physician be in
place. The scope of practice of the FNP mirrors that of a Family Physician and the education and training of the
FNP overlaps into the specialty area of Family Medicine in that conducting physical examinations, diagnosing,
ordering and interpreting tests, as well as prescribing medications are intricate parts of their responsibilities; much
like a primary care physician's. Because of the more holistic nature of the nursing profession, there are some
unique characteristics that differentiate an FNP from other primary care providers. There is a marked focus on the

Since the development of this role during the Vietnam war, now many nurses can increase their skills, experience,

Pediatric Nurse Practioner who can provide care for babies, young children, and school aged children. With Nurse
Practioners on the rise in the nursing field, many patients are receiving more satisfactory care from them because
they are taking the time to accurately assess, diagnose, and treat their patients with the proper care possible.
Without Nurse Practioners, we would not have had a detailed perspective on healthcare and the patient's health in
general. Therefore, Nurse Practioners set an example for every Registered Nurses since history that they have the

Nurses and Nurse Practitioners and their Impact The idea of nursing actually pre–dates the 19th century, but the
first professional nurse is Florence Nightingale. Traditionally, only sick people with families could get the level of
care needed, but Nightingale realized the mistake in that assumption. If one didn't have a family they couldn't get
the correct level of care. During the Crimean War, Nightingale helped clean the soldier's wounds, provide
wholesome food, and generally keep the wounded tent clean. This drastically reduced the amount of casualties and
thus the idea of professional nurses was born. A few years down the road, physicians gave nurses a more in–depth

RN's are the most common and numerous who deal with everything from starting IV's to dealing with a baby with

administering their care. Finally, doctors of nursing are leaders who make bold decisions in the healthcare world.
They are the ultimate end–game for any nurse wishing to be something even more amazing. Even though the road
to becoming any one of these levels is tedious and requires hard work, that's exactly what a nurse is: hardworking.
Unfortunately in the United States, there has been a shortage of nurses. This shortage is making an already

Healthcare reform has been debated throughout history, and continues to be a debate today. An initial healthcare
plan was supported by Theodore Roosevelt in 1910. He campaigned on the promise of national healthcare, but he
was defeated. Harry Truman proposed it thirty years later but the plan was vigorously opposed by American
Medical Association (AMA) as socialized medicine (Palmer, 2010). As a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) who
has been practicing for more than a year, an advanced nurse with a Master of Science in Administration for ten
years, a military nurse leader for twenty years, and a home health and ICU nurse for more than twenty – five
years, I agree that we need to rethink the direction of healthcare. Without ... Show more content on

NPs play a critical part and fulfill an essential role in health care. According to AANP data, 9 percent of NPs

specifically UCLA School of Nursing. The career that appeals to me is one involved in caring for children. As a

Nurse Practitioner As Theorist
Pamela Reed's Practitioner as Theorist describes the Nurse Practitioner as an "untapped resource" (Reed, 2008) in
the development of unequivocal nursing theories. Reed believes "theories and theorizing" (Reed, 2008) are
integral to clinical practice, but nurses fail to see commonality between concepts and patient outcomes (Reed,
2008) hindering knowledge advancement.
Nursing theory development is a direct reflection of changing philosophies within science (Reed, 2008), allowing
for explanation of abstract concepts of health as technological advances occur. Florence Nightingale, the first
nursing theorist (Peterson & Bredow, 2004), used British empiricism (Reed, 2008), knowledge based on

Reed believes practiced–based nursing, or "theories developed in action" (Reed, 2008), are capable of adapting to
the complex exchanges between the environment and the health status of patients (Reed, 2008). Guerilla–based
theories are "unconventional, culturally–sensitive" (Reed, 2008) and "dedicated to a human cause" (Reed, 2008).
Guerilla Theorizing utilizes the abilities of nurses to use abductive reasoning and to act as a "bricoleur" (Reed,
2008), a French term describing a person who works with available resources to correct problems, to develop new
theories within nursing practice (Reed, 2008).
Guerilla theorizing is logical as a foundation for nursing practice because it incorporates the ingenuity of
improvisation (Reed, 2008), "nursing and contemporary science" (Reed, 2008) and input from both patients and
health–care employees (Reed, 2008) to develop clinically relevant theories. Guerilla Theorizing embodies the
dynamic and humanistic nature of nursing practice, allowing for theory adjustment upon the discovery of new
information or when the context of a situation

The Mandatory Regulation Of Nurse Practitioners
New York has joined 16 other States and the district of Columbia in the abrogation of the mandatory regulation
that required nurse practitioner to deliver primary care under the supervision of a physician. Dr. Jauhar, explained
that the reason behind this law is due to the scarcity in the expanse of primary care physicians. He argued that
Nurse Practitioners are thought to be cost–effective because they are remunerated lesser than medical doctors,
however, that's not the case Mr. Jauhar elaborated that Nurse Practitioner, though an asset to medicine, aren 't

In his closing remarks, he makes an authoritative and disparaging statement that primary care providers should be
doctors and an increment in salary will attract the best from medical school. This suggest that money is force as to
why individuals become physician and patient care is the reason why individuals enter the field of nursing.
Overall, sentences are well structured and is easily understandable to the audience who are not in the healthcare
field.
There is no falsehood that there has a been a shortage in primary care physicians. Petterson, Liaw, Tran, &
Bazemore (2015), anticipated a shortage of over 33,000 primary care physicians by 2035. The American
Association of Nurse Practitioners (2012) describes Nurse practitioners as registered nurses who have innovative
knowledge, enhanced clinical training and have completed graduate or doctoral degree from an accredited
institution. Nurse practitioners are contributing tremendously to the field of nursing and health care by providing
high quality primary care especially to low income and minorities nationwide. In reference to Ryan & Rahman
(2012), in rural communities, there's a high demand for primary care and a shortage of primary care providers,
however, nurse practitioners are willing to fill the void and provide health care services such in communities even
when physicians are unwilling.

Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies and Professional Roles

  • 1. Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies And Professional... In 1990, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), a United States–based organization which represented over 90% of academic institutions with nurse practitioner (NP) education programs, released the first set of entry into practice core competencies (Duller, 2013, p .71). Nurse practitioner core competencies integrate and build upon existing Masters and DNP core competencies and are guidelines for educational programs preparing NPs to implement the full scope of practice as a licensed independent practitioner ( NONPF, 2011). By interviewing an advanced nurse practitioner, I will be able to discuss the nine nurse practitioner core competencies and how they relate to APN practice. NONPF Core Competencies The first competency area is scientific foundation competency. This competency critically analyzes data and evidence for improving advanced nursing practice. Nurse practitioners rely on scientific competency to integrate research, theory and knowledge into practice. Research of their practice will allow NPs to influence public policy through participation in professional organizations and in health policy activities at the local, state, national and international levels (Sherwood, Brown, Fay, & Wardell, 2012, para. 6). The leadership competency assumes complex and advanced roles to initiate and guide change. Leadership fosters collaboration of healthcare members to work together to provide quality, safe and effective patient care. An effective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Nurses Practitioners And Physician Assistants With advances in medicine, Americans are living longer and with chronic illnesses that require long term medical maintenance. As the population has grown with patients that are aging and becoming sicker in the process, there has presented a shortage of physicians to manage this rise in demand. Now, with the passage of new legislation such as the Affordable Care Act, more patients have access to health care than ever before. Many experts have suggested increasing the utilization of Nurse Practitioners and Physicians assistants as a cost effective resource to tackle to rising cost of healthcare amid a physician shortage in America. Several studies have been performed to assess the viability of these options, to address the advantages and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... NPs are not only moving into increased roles within the acute care hospital setting, but also into roles in the community as Primary Care Providers (PCPs). The anticipated shortage of physicians to handle an increased number of aging patients already affects my position as a staff nurse at a hospital. A career in nursing offers countless paths to further your education, whether it is to become a specialist in a field of practice, foray into research or to pursue a position as a nurse practitioner. I was interested to learn more information about how expanding the role of Advanced Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) may relieve shortages of physicians and lessen the burden on our current healthcare system. Increasing the roles of ACNP would only be feasible if patients are still receiving quality care while decreasing the cost of healthcare. As a nurse returning to school to further my education, I would like to know if pursuing a career as an ACNP would be a viable option for me to continue to interact with patients in an acute care setting in a more specialized role. Nurse Practitioners as an untapped resource Nurse Practitioners have been providing primary care since the 1970S, but with recent changes in legislation, they are able to practice with a greater level of autonomy. This leads many to question whether ACNPs are able to meet the increasing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Roles of Nurse Practitioners in Healthcare Organizations The role of a nurse practitioner has changed and progressed over the time since their inception. Nurse practitioners in today's environments of hospitals and clinics in treating primary care has expanded. Their roles has expanded that in some states a nurse practitioner can work in a clinic stand–alone without an overseeing physician. Do all states offer these privileges to nurse practitioners some ask and the answer is no. Some states still have the requirement that nurse practitioners must be overseen by a physician. In today's environment of physician shortages this leads to nurse practitioners being limited in the field of scope of primary care. Not a lot of physicians are going into primary care because of the lack of money that they may earn as a general physician over as a specialist. This problem has led to the shortage of physicians in the field of general medicine and what hospitals and clinics are trying to do to remedy the situation by using nurse practitioners and physician assistants. These organizations see nurse practitioners as a means of filling this void in primary care. Studies have shown that nurse practitioners deliver a higher quality of care or equal to that of a physician. Clinics in states that allow a nurse practitioner to practice freely from a physician are able to create openings in areas that physicians typically would not apply for. These states are seeing more nurse practitioners and physician assistants in rural areas by allowing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nurse Practitioner Essay A Nurse Practitioner is a licensed clinical health care provider that possesses comprehensive clinical expertise in diagnosing and treating health conditions with additional education and skills needed to educate about disease prevention and health management across the life span. (AANP, 2017). Nurse Practitioners usually work under the direction of physicians. Millions of Americans are choosing Nurse Practitioners more for their healthcare needs today. In 1965, a pioneer named Loretta Ford and her colleague Dr. Henry Silver developed the first Nurse Practitioner program at The University of Colorado. (Judd & Sitzman, 2014). Loretta Ford believed that Nurse Practitioners were a significant way to resolve social and health problems for specific populations across the United States. (Judd & Sitzman, 2014). Ford promoted Nurse Practitioners to work side–by–side with physicians as an effective team, to manage patients and utilize health care resources like never before. (Judd & Sitzman, 2014). In 1967, one of the first masters' degree Nurse Practitioner programs was developed at Boston College. (AANP, 2017). In 1971, The University of Washington developed the first family Nurse Practitioner programs, and it was called PRIMEX. (AANP, 2017). In 1973, The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners was developed. (AANP, 2017). • 11. The American Association Of Nurse Practitioners The largest independent membership organization available exclusively to NPs is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Besides being a full–service national organization, it also certifies NPs nationally. The AANP represents all NP specialties and advocates for high–quality healthcare services for patients and their right to obtain such services from their provider of choice. One of the most significant functions of the AANP is its involvement in advocacy and government affairs. Over thirty laws benefiting NPs and their patients were passed with the support of the AANP over the last two years. The AANP has a dedicated federal staff that works with national policy stakeholders, regulators, members of Congress, and federal agencies to enact laws ranging from admitting privileges and appropriations to prescriptive authority. (AANP, 2015a). At the local level, there are organizations acting on a smaller but more personalized scale by providing opportunities for relationship–building among colleagues. For instance, the South Florida Council of Advanced Practice Nurses (SFCAPN) is a local assembly of NPs that through collegial relationships provide mutual support, share updates on clinical knowledge, and provide networking opportunities for its members. (SFCAPN, 2015). However, for NPs in some states the battle continues over some forms of prescriptive authority or physician involvement in NP prescribing, such as the state of Pennsylvania. State regulatory approaches to NP prescribing range from no authorization for prescribing (in Georgia, 2006 legislation passed which recognized NPs as prescribers, but the rules have not been approved at the time of this writing) to unencumbered prescriptive authority (Arizona, DC, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming) (Lugo, O'Grady, Hodnicki & Hanson, 2007). As a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP) practicing in the state of Pennsylvania, the current prescriptive authority limits prescribing narcotics to a 72–hour supply. This includes any Schedule II medication regardless of the patient and their pain regimen. Working under a collaborative practice agreement, the nurse practitioner (NP) can prescribe chemotherapy, treat and prescribe for most symptoms and side effects the oncology patient may encounter, but not treat pain with Schedule II narcotics (Leahy, 2007). Through reviewing the literature, prescriptive authority of controlled substances by NP in Pennsylvania has been challenging. Many societal issues have influenced the growth of nurse prescriptive practices. The shortage of providers, particularly for underserved, uninsured populations, has been thoroughly documented (Pearson, 2009). In the 2007 Pearson Report, there are 39 states that still require the oversight of a physician in writing prescriptions, and 11 other states including the District of Columbia, which allows independent authority. APNs lose a feeling of independence when they feel a physician has to oversee what they are prescribing to their patients. In states in which physician oversight is not required, APN practice can be very independent. For this paper, an examination on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. A Career as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Pediatric Nurse Practitioner I would like to go into the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner career field. Pediatric Nurse Practitioners help Pediatricians and other Physicians diagnose and take care of children from infancy to young adults. I have grown up with ten siblings and many more cousins, so I have learned how to deal with children of all ages. Also, I have been interested in the medical field since I was a little girl and I have always loved to help people. I would have liked to be a Pediatrician but I would prefere not be in school for another thirteen years, so I found that the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner was the perfect career for me. In the mid–twentieth century, doctors started working with nurses who had "clinical experience" because they needed more people in specialized and primary care. Health coverage like Medicaid and Medicare were offered to low income women, children, elderly and disabled people in the mid–1960's. Because of the affordable coverage, more people then requested the need to have primary care, and because there were not enough doctors to go around to everyone that could afford the care, the nurses felt that they could take on the important responsibility. The training program for the nurse practitioners, developed by Nurse Loretta Ford and Doctor Henry Silver, was based on the well being of children and their families. The growing interest for primary care, according to Ford, was one of the reasons for the creation of Nurse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Starting point At the beginning of the research process, it was clear that Nurse Practitioners could only prescribe a limited number of medications. Prescribing medication is an important part of health care, but it does not encompass all the duties of a nurse practitioner. • 23. Nurse Practitioners : Nursing Practitioners Nurse practitioners (NPs), or Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), play an essential role in the growing complexity of the healthcare system. Established in the early 1960s, nurse practitioners have served as skilled clinicians, meeting the healthcare needs of patients as the availability of primary care physicians continued to decrease. Much like a Primary Care Physician, Nurse Practitioners can serve as a primary health care providers or specialize in particular areas of health care like family medicine. Many Nurse Practitioners, for instance Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP), work in collaboration with physicians in hospitals or outpatient facilities, while others work autonomously in private practices. With their graduate–level education and clinical training, family nurse practitioners can diagnose illnesses, conduct exams, treat complex health conditions, and prescribe medications. Family nurse practitioners place a strong emphasis on wellness and prevention, but also provide treatment for everything from mild ailments to serious conditions affecting any member across the age span. One FNP, in which the author has had the pleasure to work beside with, is an exceptional staff nurse, clinical instructor, and mentor. Then, determine the utilization of these measurements for nurse practitioner (NP) productivity. Doctors receive a base salary equal to 90% of the benchmark. However, the RVUs used to provide the physician's with incentive pay is unable to be the median benchmark for most APRNs, as they are not always billing providers. The Incentive pay for advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) usually involves a percentage of profits after the payment of benefits from the revenues. Unfortunately, if an NP works at a hospital that has a mission to care for everyone regardless of their ability to pay, the rate of collections is decreased significantly (Rhodes, Bechtle, & McNett, 2015). Incentive Payment However, Carolyn Buppert suggests that a practice includes quality measures and productivity as well as incentive plans to increase provider and patient satisfaction. Factors such as rising costs of healthcare, population increases, aging in the population as well as divergence in the health division has played a large role in shaping the health industry. Nursing is one of the professions has gone through a paradigm change in its organization and capabilities, structure and role stipulations (AHRQ, 2015). Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who receive advanced education and clinical training, in a wide variety of areas that range from preventive and acute health care services to individuals in all age groups. At the same time, majority of nurse practitioners practice their skills in several different areas but most are in an ambulatory setting as compared to other nursing roles that are in an acute care setting (AHRQ, 2015). A nurse practitioner squarely falls under the clinical department of both medicine and nursing. Socioeconomic status has an impact on the health outcomes of individuals, as a result, many people who are uninsured go through their daily lives without assisting to a yearly physical or a primary care visit when they feel ill. This is partly due to the differences in pay for specialists and primary care physicians. With the increased shortage of primary care professionals, advance practice registered nurses could assume the responsibility and therefore aid in lowering healthcare costs There are various ways that nurse practitioners can improve primary care while simultaneously reducing healthcare costs. According to Naylor and Kurtzman (2010), "the average cost of a nurse practitioner or physician assistant visit is 20–35 percent lower than the average cost of a physician visit" (p. 895). This could result in approximate savings of 4.2 million to 8.4 million dollars between the years 2010 and 2020 (Naylor & Kurtzman, 2010, p. 895). Economic Factors In order for individuals to have access to medical services, they must have a method of payment, whether it will be out of pocket, private insurance, employment based insurance, or government financing. The access to care also depends on the availability of medical professionals and the accessibility of resources (Bodenheimer & Grumback, 2012, p. 17). • 71. Nurse Practitioner As Theorist Pamela Reed's Practitioner as Theorist describes the Nurse Practitioner as an "untapped resource" (Reed, 2008) in the development of unequivocal nursing theories. Reed believes "theories and theorizing" (Reed, 2008) are integral to clinical practice, but nurses fail to see commonality between concepts and patient outcomes (Reed, 2008) hindering knowledge advancement. Nursing theory development is a direct reflection of changing philosophies within science (Reed, 2008), allowing for explanation of abstract concepts of health as technological advances occur. Florence Nightingale, the first nursing theorist (Peterson & Bredow, 2004), used British empiricism (Reed, 2008), knowledge based on observable phenomenon (Peterson & Bredow, 2004), to ... Reed believes practiced–based nursing, or "theories developed in action" (Reed, 2008), are capable of adapting to the complex exchanges between the environment and the health status of patients (Reed, 2008). Guerilla–based theories are "unconventional, culturally–sensitive" (Reed, 2008) and "dedicated to a human cause" (Reed, 2008). Guerilla Theorizing utilizes the abilities of nurses to use abductive reasoning and to act as a "bricoleur" (Reed, 2008), a French term describing a person who works with available resources to correct problems, to develop new theories within nursing practice (Reed, 2008). Guerilla theorizing is logical as a foundation for nursing practice because it incorporates the ingenuity of improvisation (Reed, 2008), "nursing and contemporary science" (Reed, 2008) and input from both patients and health–care employees (Reed, 2008) to develop clinically relevant theories. Guerilla Theorizing embodies the dynamic and humanistic nature of nursing practice, allowing for theory adjustment upon the discovery of new information or when the context of a situation ... I am not sure on what specialty I want. So given a assignment in my Introduction Health Sciences class where I have to shadow a nurse practitioner, it gives me the opportunity to explore a specialty and see what it really is like in their typical work day. An advanced practice registered nurse, by the name of Mary Carlson at Parkland Medical Center was willing to let me shadow her for a day. Carlson graduated with her BSN from Boston College. She then pursued a graduate degree from Boston University. Her official title is, Nurse Practitioner, Emergency Medicine. I had the chance to shadow Carlson through a family friend that she works with. I have always been fascinated by emergency medicine, so I was naturally very excited to shadow her. Through email Carlson told me her shift was from 10am – 6pm. She also told me to wear comfortable shoes, since her job is very faced–paced. I arrived at Parkland Medical Center at 9:55. I checked in at the front desk in the emergency room. I waited for fifteen minutes, the lady at the front desk said she was caught up with a patient. "Already?" I thought, I knew then I was in for a busy day. When Carlson finally came out, she greeted me and showed me to her desk where I could put my stuff. She noticed my lunchbox and said while laughing, "hopefully we'll have time for lunch today." She immediately introduced me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
