Reflections on Privatization and Criminal Justice Essays
Reflections on Privatization and Criminal Justice
Thank you very much for the welcome, and for giving my talk. When the Fraser Institute called me
last year, they rang up and said they were having a conference and we would like to invite you, and I
thought I think you have the wrong person. Basically, everybody else there, except myself and one
person from Nova Scotia, were in favour of privatization and very strongly in favour of it, especially
with respect to prisons. It was actually very educational and interesting to engage in that debate.
First of all I would like to thank you very much for the invitation and to wish you all the best with
your new programme. I am glad that you have asked me to speak about privatization and criminal ...

So on the one hand we are surrounded by the phenomenon and on the other hand we don't know as
much about it as we should. Even my own work, I might add, privatization is more or less a tangent
for me as I do other areas of research. I think it is indication that very few people in Canada,
criminologists, are systematically focussing on this but I keep getting roped back into this. I just
wish I had three lives at once so that I could pursue it the way I really want to. Privatization is an
area that really needs attention, and lets hope that students here at St. Thomas are going to take this
up. Let me just mention one or two topics that need attention. Many people talk about privatization
in criminal justice, including myself, mention that it is likely that private companies will try and
influence criminal justice policy in various places. Yet when you look for the empirical support for
this there is very little factual information there. Or we talk a bit about the decline of the military in
industrial conflicts, the end of the Cold War, and new markets opening up for these companies
internationally and we see some of the companies moving from the United States into Britain,
Australia and now also Canada, and we hear things about them moving into Latin American
countries and East European countries, but again this international dimension is one that there has
been very little systematic research on. So the whole area is just begging for

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
. Capsicum annuum is a domesticated species of the plant genus Capsicum native to southern North
America and northern South America. Chili has been a part of the human diet in the Americas since
at least 7500 BC. There is archaeological evidence at sites located in southwestern Ecuador that chili
peppers were domesticated more than 6000 years ago and is one of the first cultivated crops in the
Central and South Americas that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
annuum is especially productive in warm and dry climates. The single flowers are an off–white
(sometimes purplish) color whilst the stem is densely branched and up to 60 centimetres (24 in) tall.
When ripe, the fruit may be green, yellow or red. In American English the plant is commonly known
as a chili pepper or bell pepper. Sweet peppers are very often used as a bulking agent in cheap ready
made meals/take–away food as they are cheap, have a strong flavour, and are colorful. The colorful
aspect of peppers increases the visual appeal of the food, making it more appetizing. Capsaicin, a
chemical found in chili peppers, creates a burning sensation once ingested which can last for several
hours after ingestion. In British English, the sweet varieties are called red or green peppers, and the
hot varieties chillies whereas in Australian and Indian English the name capsicum is commonly used
for bell peppers exclusively and chilli is often used to encompass the hotter varieties.
Uses of Capsicum Annuum The species is a source of popular sweet peppers and hot chilis with
numerous varieties cultivated all around the world. Hot peppers are used in medicine in Africa and
other countries. It is employed in medicine, in combination with Cinchona in intermittent and
lethargic affections, and also in atonic gout, dyspepsia accompanied

The Gut-Wrenching Science Behind the World’s Hottest...
Title of the article: The Gut–Wrenching Science Behind the World's Hottest Peppers
Summary:
Nagaland of India contains one of the world's hottest chilies – the Naga King Chili (Bhut Jolokia).
The author of the article, Mary Roach, arrived to Nagaland to experience the Hornbill Festival, in
particular, to watch the Naga King Chili–Eating Competition. She aimed to find out and understand
the pleasure and pain the Capsicum genus brings to the people who consume it. The Naga King
Chili Pepper varies in heat, but can score extremely high on the Scoville heat unit. The contestants
of the chili–eating contest began to suffer from the effect of the capsaicin in their digestive tracts.
Some experienced hot flashes and unbearable heat from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this case, environment has a greater effect than genetics. A person's environment, exposure to
capsaicin (both frequency and hotness) has a greater effect on a person's tolerance than their
biological makeup. Also, it was mentioned in lecture, there are supertasters, tasters, and nontasters.
Supertasters have smaller and more papillae on their tongue, which makes their sensitivity to tastes
heighten. For nontasters, the opposite is true. They have bigger and less papillae on their tongues,
making them less sensitive to tastes. Supertasters would be less tolerant to chilies like the Naga
King Chili because of their heighten senses, on the other hand, nontasters would be less sensitive
and would probably find the Naga King Chili more tolerable.
Relationship with the Tomorrow's Table topic: Tomorrow's Table suggests that organic farming as
well as genetic engineering of plants can help solve some of today's food problems. At the end of the
article, it was said that growing conditions heavily affect the ways chilies turn out. The hotness of
the chilies can change drastically depending on growing conditions. Therefore, we can apply organic
farming and genetic engineering on the Naga King Peppers to make them mild. This way, the Naga
King Chilies will appeal to more consumers than just chiliheads. Similarly, the same methods can be
used on other extremely hot chilies to make them more tolerable to the average human being. By
doing so, it opens up

Essay on Red Hot Chili Peppers
Red Hot Chili Peppers
A passion for foods from the American Southwest is sweeping through the country. The main
component and most popular item of this fad is the chili pepper, an item of tremendous variability
and a staple of many people in Central America. In this country, chili peppers were once only found
in specialized ethnic stores, but now it is just as likely to be found at the neighborhood Kroger. For
most people, however, their knowledge stops here. Through this paper I hope to educate the reader
on some other aspects of this intriguing vegetable, such as its history, chemistry, and uses.
There is some confusion over what a "chili pepper" is. To many it is only the hot varieties of pepper,
such as the jalapeno or the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dr. Chanca described chili peppers as the native's principle food and compared them to the turnip
(Andrews 1984).
The seeds of the chili pepper were brought back to Spain, where it was grown in monastery gardens.
Portuguese traders then spread the chili peppers to many far flung locations, such as India,
Indonesia, and Persia (Andrews 1984).
Chile peppers became popular due to their great variability in size, shape, and color. Unfortunately,
this long proved to be a problem for the taxonomists, who frequently had trouble telling the
difference between a different variety and a different species. It wasn't until the 1950's that it was
decided that there were five main species of chili peppers, and twenty wild ones (Proulx 1985). The
five main species are: Capsicum annum, Capsicum frutescens, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum
baccatum, and Capsicum pubescens. However, it is considered impossible to develop a system of
classification that would cover all of the chili peppers, due to the great variation among the members
of the same species, especially in places such as Mexico (Smith, Villalon, and Villa 1987).
Man's interest in chili peppers has resulted in new varieties, such as the TAM Jalapeno, Hidalgo
Serrano, and Numex Big Jim, which have a milder flavor or are more resistant to disease. In order to
make chili peppers more palatable to the public, chili pepper breeders are breeding varieties that are

Sample Essay : ' Bowl Of Red '
Ever since my Nana first let me help her bake Christmas cookies at around 5–years–old, I have
enjoyed cooking. Being away at college has limited my ability to cook, but I still manage to indulge
myself when I'm home during breaks. A dish that I first made about two years ago, and been
developing ever since is Chili Verde. The fresh, savory, and slightly sweet cousin of the classic
"bowl of red" is something that I've grown fond of eating, but even more so of preparing– of
learning the process and how it can be improved. In the years of developing my Chili Verde recipe,
I've gained a level of expert in the dish itself, but I've always wanted to better understand the main
ingredient: the chilies. I want to learn more about the botany of chili peppers; how they were first
cultivated, how they are structured, why they are uniquely spicy and, most importantly, why is their
spice appealing? History Somewhat unsurprisingly, chili peppers were first cultivated by humans in
Central America. This is pretty intuitive, considering that the first–place Americans think of when it
comes to spicy food is Mexico. What is really fascinating, though, is that fact that peppers were
native to the New World and did not exist in the Old until they were brought back by traders. That
means that for most of the cultures and cuisines for whom spicy peppers are a foundation are really
a more recent addition. India, for example, only received their first peppers in the late 15th century.
Since then,

Phototropism can affect plant growth because the definition of phototropism is the growth
movement of a plant induced by a light stimulus. This causes the plant to face the direction of the
light stimulus, if the plant is illuminated on one side. However, if the plant grows in dark room or
where there is uniform light, it will cause the plant to grow straight upwards. Gravitropism will
affect the plant's roots. If you change the position of the roots, the roots will start growing in the
direction. Thigmotropism which is the directional growth in response to touch. For my experiment, I

on plant growth? The effects of the amount of sunlight on my plant caused one of my pots to grow
slower 3) What factors affect seed germination? Some factors that affect seed germination are
temperature, light and moisture. Most seeds tend to germinate quicker with the presence of water. In
my experiment, Pot B did not germinate at the same time as Pot A. This was most likely because Pot
B was exposed to more sunlight causing the water to evaporate and leaving the seeds with little

Foods That Influenced The World Essay

sauce and pumpkin pie. While most people think of foods like pecan pie and cornbread stuffing as
being southern in origin, they don't realize that what their eating has it's roots in the native American
culture. I intend to show how much of the food we eat today was first cultivated by the native people
of the Americas. Moreover, the impact this food has had upon the world.
When the early explorers sailed back to Europe, they took with them plants and food native to the

Vodka today commands 20% of the U.S. liquor market, and is one of the most popular drinks
worldwide. In America today the potato is a facet of everyday life from the mashed potatoes we eat
with our fast food chicken, to the potato that is a staple with pot roast, to everybody's favorite
McDonalds french fries.
The tomato is another plant that has acquired global prominence from humble origins. It originated
with the Inca and migrated north to the Maya and the Aztecs, where the Spanish brought it to
Europe, and like its cousin the potato, it is a member of the Nightshade family. The tomato took
sometime to gain a foothold as people believed it to be poisonous, but when it took off, it took off
energetically. The Italians and French were the first to embrace it. Today the tomato is taken for
granted as a common menu item. We consume it everyday in pizza, Italian food, and in almost any
salad you can think of. It is the main ingredient of two of the world's most popular condiment's
ketchup and salsa.
There is another member of the Nightshade family that has made an incredible journey from its
humble origins member is the capsicum or chili pepper. When the Spanish came to the new world
there were only four types of pepper the Cayenne, Bell, Jalapeno, and the Tabasco. The pepper then

Senior Prom Memories
I have a lot of good memories of my senior prom. The Hilton's California ballroom, the dancing, and
socializing with friends were some of the memories. But most of all, the food was the best memory
of all. The food served at Castlemont High's senior prom was colorful and delicious. One could not
help but to see, smell, and eventually consume the food. The meal consisted of hors d'oeurves, the
main course, beverages, and dessert. All of these delicacies combined made the prom a satisfying
experience.
I remember vividly the set of hors d'oeurves. The hors d'oeurves were arranged in a big heart to set
the mood of mystery and romance. The bright crimson bell pepper stood mighty in the face of its
relative, the humble, dull, green pepper. The darkened pieces of beef had visible hints of all purpose
seasoning and slivers of onions. The dull pink jumbo shrimp looked like crescent moons,
outrageously swollen, and just about ready to bust out of their transparent, segmented shells.
The smell of hors d'oeurves served to whet the appetite of all in attendance. The hickory smell of
beef stood out to draw everyone near. The shrimp had a salty smell with a hint of ocean water. The
bell peppers, both green and red, had a tart smell, compared to their fleshy counterparts. My taste
buds watered, but nothing could compare to the next course I was about to see.
After devouring the hors d'oeurves, the main course was set before us. The arrangements of Chinese

Hplc Analysis of Capsaicin Essay
HPLC Analysis of Capsaicin Eric Sorenson Work Completed on 11/28/12 Quantitative analysis of
Capsaicin was analyzed in three peppers that were expected to differ greatly in their capsaicin
content and thus their relative spiciness. The idea was to have a nice range of capsaicin
concentrations to clearly reflect the subjective pain one experiences from biting into a chili. Fresh
Habanero, Jalapeno and Red Bell Pepper were purchased from the local Family Fresh grocery store
to be analyzed via HPLC. This capsaicin project consisted of three stages to ensure proper and
accurate analysis. The first stage was the preparation of the three samples for injection into the
HPLC. One gram of fine powder of each pepper was obtained by ... Show more content on

UV lamp detector set at 215 nm. Injection volume of 20 µL and a flow rate of 2.0 mL/min. The total
run time was eight minutes. Solvent A consisted of 100% water with 0.1% TFA. Solvent B was a
80% ACN/20% water solution with 0.1% TFA. A gradient elution was programmed for 20% to
100% solvent B in five minutes then return to 20% solvent B for the last three minutes. The last
stage of the project was the actual sample analysis. The HPLC was programmed to run a reinjection
of the calibration standard, a reinjection of the blank, then two injections of each sample A, B and C
respectively under the same conditions as described above. Once the chromatograms were obtained
and assistance from Dr. Marchand was needed in order to identify significant peaks. Calculations
were then done on all three samples to quantitate the amount of capsaicin in each pepper. See
calculations page. The concentration of capsaicin in the habanero pepper was calculated to be 207
µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper. Jalapeno was 70.9 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper and red
bell pepper was 8.033 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper. The results of this analysis seemed to live
up to my expectations and what I wanted to demonstrate by analyzing three different peppers
spanning a wide range of capsaicin content. Habanero peppers are notoriously known for their high
scoville heat value and usually one plump habanero pepper

Phenq Vs Capssaicin
Is phenQ better than phen375? There is a growing need of efficient fat burning weight loss
supplements. It is of no wonder that there is an incredible growth in the weight loss industry. More
individuals are searching for the best diet pill to lose the extra pounds. If you are one of them then
you would probably want to know which one is the best fit. PhenQ and phen375 are among the
leading supplements if we talk about weight reduction!
Phen375
Phen375 advances weight loss in three different ways – appetite suppression, fat burn and
thermogenesis. Phen375 raises the core temperature of your body in order to help your body burn
the extra calories. One of its main ingredients is Capsaicin which is the most promising thermogenic
ingredient. It increases the thermogenesis in two ways:

PhenQ
PhenQ stimulates weight loss by expanding thermogenesis, decreasing craving for food, preventing
accumulation of fat and enhancing mental health. It contains capsimax powder. This is a proprietary
blend and is a mixture of ingredients like capsicum, piperine, niacin and caffeine. Capsicum and

Enzyme Concentration
This experiment was carried out with many precautions to minimise error margins. These measures
included putting the measuring cylinders in the water bath/ ice box/ and bench top at the same time,
using the same capsicum extract, having the same person record the results and add the capsicum
extract. However there were still some results that exhibited error such as collecting the measuring
cylinders at different times which prolonged the exposure, as well as have a delay between starting
the timer and adding the capsicum extract. Other issues consist of having an uneven layer of foam
(O2) which was a random error that made it difficult to record mL, and forgetting to record the
temperature of the H2O2.
Ideally there should have been a gap between exposing each measuring cylinder to the change in
temperature, so once one temperature was recorded the next one was ready rather than them
overlapping. Another improvement in the experiment would be to assign the task of timing to one
person and adding the extract to another person to diminish the gap between completing each of the
tasks*. In addition, testing more temperature points or repeating the experiment would allow for a
wider range of results and a higher accuracy reading of the ideal conditions for enzyme reactivity. ...

The Importance Of Pungent Plants
I have always been a chili pepper aficionado who enjoyed the pungency, meaning spiciness, of
peppers. So I decided to learn about how to grow chili peppers in my garden. While researching
chili pepper growth, I saw that pungent plants had 40% greater density of stomata than non pungent
plants. Stomata are pores that allow water and air to enter and exit the plant's cells. So pungent
plants experience greater water loss than non pungent plants do. Pungent plants have more stomata
than non pungent plants because the proteins involved in pungency and building stomata are
regulated by the same pathway. (CSMonitor) I became curious on how the amount of water a
pungent chili pepper has affects it.
Water, a fundamental component of life, allows all living beings to exist. Plants are no exception.
Plants utilize water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and sunlight to undergo the process of photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is the method plants use to create food. During photosynthesis, plants use six
molecules of water, six molecules of CO2, and sunlight to produce one molecule of sugar and six
molecules of oxygen. This reaction, modeled by the equation 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight →
C6H12O6 + 6O2, demonstrates the essentialness of water in the survival of plants. Water is a crucial
component of photosynthesis because it permits plants to produce food that they need to sustain
themselves. Food gives plants the energy to perform many functions, such as reproduction and the
production of chemicals.

Research Paper On Spleen
Spleen
Interesting facts:
In a foetus, the spleen produces RBCs
Before a baby is born, the task of producing red blood cells rests with the spleen. As birth
approaches, the spleen gradually stops doing this and allows the bone marrow to take over.
About 10% of humans have a second spleen
About 10% of the human population has a much smaller second spleen also known as an accessory
spleen. It is a small portion of splenic tissue that exists separately.
Humans can survive without a spleen
Humans can live without spleen but since the spleen plays an important role in fighting
microorganisms, it increases the person's chance of contracting more infections.
Functions:
Fight infection
One of the main jobs of the spleen is to fight microorganisms and halt the spread of infections in the
body. Whenever the spleen detects any dangerous microorganisms in the blood, it produces
lymphocytes or white blood cells, which fight against the invaders. The lymphocytes produce
antibodies that kill the foreign microorganisms and stop the infections from spreading.
Eliminate old red blood cells

Riot Control Agents: Chloroacetophenone (CN)
Uses of irritating gas such as sulfur and burning wax have been recorded early as 428 BC during the
war between the Athenians and the Spartans, but modern day chemical agents that cause excessive
lacrimation and blepharospasm were first developed and used by Germany during World War I. [2]
These riot control agents have also been referred to as lacrimators, tear gases, harassing agents, and
irritating agents. Since its development, riot control agents have been used in wars, civil
disturbances, as well as military training and exercises. While Chemical Weapons Convention
prohibited the use of these agents as a method of warfare, USA currently does not classify riot
control agents as chemical warfare agents. [3] Today, the most commonly used lacrimating agents
are chloroacetophenone (CN), o–chloro–benzylidne malonitrile (CS), and oleoresin capsicum (OC).

military training compound used by the military and law enforcement agencies. [5] Purse sized tear
gas weapons resembling fountain pen were commercially available to the public in 1920s. Initially
the all tear gas weapons utilized a form of an explosive in order to dispel the CN. A typical tear gas
weapon would fire a cartridge that is packed with CN powder and an explosive charge. It was in
1965 that CN started to be available in a form of pressurized aerosol spray under the brand name
Mace. [6] Although CN was largely replaced with CS due to the toxicity profile, it is still commonly

The Mind : Paper Two
Phi of Mind: Paper Two
I. Introduction In this paper, four important features of qualia will be made explicit. From these, we
will examine two specific features of qualia (privacy and immediate apprehensibility) which
Dennett attempts to debunk in his article, Quining Qualia. His reasoning – in the form of intuition
pumps – will be critiqued, and a rejection formulated.
II. Qualities of Qualia Qualia are traditionally held to possess four characteristics that make them
unique. They are ineffable, intrinsic, private, and immediately apprehensible within consciousness.
Listing these attributes is all well and good, but what are they? Ineffability refers to the
incommunicability of qualia. Attempting to use language to capture qualia seems to miss part of the
experience, or to reduce and simplify the experience until it can be made to conform to what
language can communicate. Qualia seems so content–rich that moving it into public understanding
necessarily entails its simplification. Consider the jalapeño and habanero peppers. If I were to eat
both, I would experience two separate qualia – one for the jalapeno and one for the habanero. In
language, I could describe both as 'spicy'. More practically, I could describe the jalapeno as 'very
spicy' and the habanero as 'mutilatingly spicy '. I could be as creative or precise as possible to try to
relay the qualia of the peppers, and I could certainly give a listener an image of some sort of quale
one might have. Still, there

There exist many foods but no food is much mystify as much the chilli pepper is. There exist many

Jumping Bean Lab Report
The Mexican Jumping Bean is indigenous to Mexico and has a peculiar life cycle. The process
begins when a moth (Cydia deshaisiana) lays its egg inside a plant (Sebastiania pavoniana) then the
egg incorporates itself with the seed of the flower. When the larvae hatches it eats its way to the
inside of the flower. It lives their until the spring rains come which separates the seed into 3 pieces
(Each of those pieces harden and turn into a brownish color.) and one of those pieces is where the
larvae is. This means that the larvae is trapped inside the bean. From then on the bean becomes part
of the larvae and until the larva turns into a moth it is part of it. Finally after some time the bean will
spin a silk cocoon and then go dormant for a few days. Afterwards it will reemerge as a moth. It will
then live for some days before it dies after it becomes a moth. During its lifetime as a bean it
"jumps" or moves a little bit every so often. We wanted to discover how temperature would affect

Descriptive Dining At Home
You finally meet a significant other and you want to impress them with an appetizing home cooked
meal. Unfortunately, your idea of fine dining at home is Raman Noodles served in a bowl and not in
the foam cup. Raman Noodles, even served in a bowl, will not impress any date. Now picture
yourself sharing a warm, freshly crafted pizza. A pizza with fried chicken smothered with provolone
cheese. A pizza with a pop of flavor provided by bell peppers. A pizza seamlessly put together with
ranch dressing. This simple recipe for chicken ranch pizza will make you resistible to any date. To
complete the following recipe, you will need one boneless chicken breast (an ideal size for the
chicken breast is the size of your hand), soy sauce, lemon juice, a bell pepper, shredded provolone
cheese, salt, Cayenne pepper, flour, olive oil, one large egg, and one frozen cheese pizza (preferably
Di Giorno rising crust). First you need to prep the chicken breast. If your chicken breast is frozen,
let your chicken breast thaw. To speed up the thawing process, you may use a microwave. However,
set the microwave to defrost mode before thawing your chicken, which will prevent the chicken
from drying out and will keep the chicken moist. Thaw the chicken, on defrost mode, for
approximately five to six minutes. After thawing the chicken, take a sharp knife and make a
horizontal cut across the middle of the breast. Always act carefully when working knives.
Remember to keep the blade down and always cut away from yourself. Cut the chicken into long
strips with roughly one–quarter inch of thickness. Reducing the thickness of the breast will reduce
the amount of time needed to cook the chicken fully. Now make a vertical cut every half inch to
both strips of chicken. The chicken pieces should resemble the size and shape of your middle and
ring finger combined. After cutting the chicken, wash hands thoroughly with warm water and soap.
Always wash your hands after touching raw meat to prevent cross commination. Do not touch any
other ingredient before washing your hands.
Next you need to assemble the marinade for the chicken. Start with a deep dish baking pan and add
one and half cups of soy sauce or until the bottom of the pan is

Seeing how affective these projectiles could be, the police in Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong–Kong
eventually made a more sophisticated wooden bullet. "By the 1970s, the British brought the idea
back to England, where they replaced wood with rubber." Eventually this idea trickled down to
many other countries including the United States. These rubber bullets can be shot from a standard
police handgun. The bullet has a metal shell casing but instead of a metal bullet it is replaced by a
black thick rubber projectile. In riots, the police will attempt to aim for any area below the neck;
when the bullet hits an object it flattens out in order to cause no permanent damage. Rubber bullets
travel up to 950 mph, and if hit by one of these rubber bullets a rioter will experience an extreme
stinging pain. Some people describe the pain as "being hit with a baseball bat" (Norman). Although
not intended to be deadly doctors warn, "rubber bullets are unsafe and should never be used by
authorities to control riots". But when it comes down to controlling hostile crowds, rubber bullets
are the most effective and instant way to turn rioters away. These are just a few non–lethal weapons
used by police in riots all across the United States. Non–lethal weapons come in a variety of devices
that can be used to subdue rioters if needed. These devices provide a much needed weapon

Efficacy Of Tea Tree Oil
Efficacy of Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), Honey, and Capsicum annuum Against
Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli
Kenzie Perryman, Daniela Perez, and Alexa West
Department of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences, College of Agriculture, Science and
Engineering,
West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX 79016
November 8, 2015
This experiment was designed to examine the efficacy of naturally occurring antimicrobials against
common bacteria located in a normal human microbiome. Three antimicrobials, Melaleuca
alternifolia (tea tree) oil, commercial honey, and Capsicum annuum (red chili pepper), were tested
on the gram negative Escherichia coli and the gram positive Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria.
Quantitative data was taken using the filter–paper disk method to determine the zones of inhibition
produced by the three antimicrobials. The results collected showed that Melaleuca alternifolia (tea
tree) oil is an effective broad spectrum antimicrobial, while honey produced partial inhibition with
an outer ring of stimulation signifying that the honey is merely bacteriostatic for a short period of
time before growth reoccurs. The Capsicum annuum (red chili pepper) stimulated bacterial growth
indicating possible contamination or lack of antimicrobial properties.
Introduction
Antimicrobial agents are an integral part of everyday life in today's society and play a vital role in
reducing the impact of diseases across the globe.

Capssaicin Research Paper
Capsaicin is a chemical that is found in chili peppers which causes the heat when you eat spicy
foods. In order to detect the capsaicin that is found in the foods that you eat, your body has receptors
on sensory neurons. The receptors are known as capsaicin receptors and found in the dendrites of the
sensory neurons better known as nociceptors. (Caterina) When your body receives that feeling of
pain or heat, it is due to capsaicin receptor recognizing capsaicin, but also the ability of the capsaicin
receptor to act as an ion channel, which is found in a category known as the transient receptor
potential channels. (Fox) Capsaicin will stimulate and excite the capsaicin receptor. When the
receptor is excited it allows the entrance of Calcium (Ca+2) and Sodium (Na+). (Fox) When the
calcium and sodium rush into the cell it will cause the cell to depolarize. Once the cell depolarizes, it
will cause the action potential. The action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to relieve that feeling many people attempt to drink water, but that is not going to help the
feeling, milk is a much better choice. Capsaicin likes to bind to lipoproteins, therefore capsaicin will
bind with the casein found in milk. (Why Does Chilli Burn, And Why Does Milk Help Soothe The
Pain?) If you attempt to drink water, the capsaicin will continue to bind to the receptors in your
mouth. As capsaicin is binding to the receptors the nerve cells are stimulating that pain sensation.
(How to Neutralize Hot Foods in the Mouth) Knowing that capsaicin will bind to the casein found in
milk instead of the receptors on your tongue and in your mouth, the more fat found in the milk the
faster your will relieve that burning feeling from your mouth. It is after capsaicin bind to the casein
that it can be washed away from your mouth allowing for relief. (How to Neutralize Hot Foods in

Reflections On Privatization And Criminal Justice Essays

  • 1. Reflections on Privatization and Criminal Justice Essays Reflections on Privatization and Criminal Justice Thank you very much for the welcome, and for giving my talk. When the Fraser Institute called me last year, they rang up and said they were having a conference and we would like to invite you, and I thought I think you have the wrong person. Basically, everybody else there, except myself and one person from Nova Scotia, were in favour of privatization and very strongly in favour of it, especially with respect to prisons. It was actually very educational and interesting to engage in that debate. First of all I would like to thank you very much for the invitation and to wish you all the best with your new programme. I am glad that you have asked me to speak about privatization and criminal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So on the one hand we are surrounded by the phenomenon and on the other hand we don't know as much about it as we should. Even my own work, I might add, privatization is more or less a tangent for me as I do other areas of research. I think it is indication that very few people in Canada, criminologists, are systematically focussing on this but I keep getting roped back into this. I just wish I had three lives at once so that I could pursue it the way I really want to. Privatization is an area that really needs attention, and lets hope that students here at St. Thomas are going to take this up. Let me just mention one or two topics that need attention. Many people talk about privatization in criminal justice, including myself, mention that it is likely that private companies will try and influence criminal justice policy in various places. Yet when you look for the empirical support for this there is very little factual information there. Or we talk a bit about the decline of the military in industrial conflicts, the end of the Cold War, and new markets opening up for these companies internationally and we see some of the companies moving from the United States into Britain, Australia and now also Canada, and we hear things about them moving into Latin American countries and East European countries, but again this international dimension is one that there has been very little systematic research on. So the whole area is just begging for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Capsicum annuum is a domesticated species of the plant genus Capsicum native to southern North America and northern South America. Chili has been a part of the human diet in the Americas since at least 7500 BC. The single flowers are an off–white (sometimes purplish) color whilst the stem is densely branched and up to 60 centimetres (24 in) tall. When ripe, the fruit may be green, yellow or red. In American English the plant is commonly known as a chili pepper or bell pepper. Sweet peppers are very often used as a bulking agent in cheap ready made meals/take–away food as they are cheap, have a strong flavour, and are colorful. The colorful aspect of peppers increases the visual appeal of the food, making it more appetizing. Capsaicin, a chemical found in chili peppers, creates a burning sensation once ingested which can last for several hours after ingestion. In British English, the sweet varieties are called red or green peppers, and the hot varieties chillies whereas in Australian and Indian English the name capsicum is commonly used for bell peppers exclusively and chilli is often used to encompass the hotter varieties. Uses of Capsicum Annuum The species is a source of popular sweet peppers and hot chilis with numerous varieties cultivated all around the world. Hot peppers are used in medicine in Africa and other countries. It is employed in medicine, in combination with Cinchona in intermittent and lethargic affections, and also in atonic gout, dyspepsia accompanied

Title of the article: The Gut–Wrenching Science Behind the World's Hottest Peppers Summary: Nagaland of India contains one of the world's hottest chilies – the Naga King Chili (Bhut Jolokia). The author of the article, Mary Roach, arrived to Nagaland to experience the Hornbill Festival, in particular, to watch the Naga King Chili–Eating Competition. She aimed to find out and understand the pleasure and pain the Capsicum genus brings to the people who consume it. The Naga King Chili Pepper varies in heat, but can score extremely high on the Scoville heat unit. The contestants of the chili–eating contest began to suffer from the effect of the capsaicin in their digestive tracts. Some experienced hot flashes and unbearable heat from ... A person's environment, exposure to capsaicin (both frequency and hotness) has a greater effect on a person's tolerance than their biological makeup. Also, it was mentioned in lecture, there are supertasters, tasters, and nontasters. Supertasters have smaller and more papillae on their tongue, which makes their sensitivity to tastes heighten. For nontasters, the opposite is true. They have bigger and less papillae on their tongues, making them less sensitive to tastes. Supertasters would be less tolerant to chilies like the Naga King Chili because of their heighten senses, on the other hand, nontasters would be less sensitive and would probably find the Naga King Chili more tolerable. Relationship with the Tomorrow's Table topic: Tomorrow's Table suggests that organic farming as well as genetic engineering of plants can help solve some of today's food problems. At the end of the article, it was said that growing conditions heavily affect the ways chilies turn out. The hotness of the chilies can change drastically depending on growing conditions. Therefore, we can apply organic farming and genetic engineering on the Naga King Peppers to make them mild. This way, the Naga King Chilies will appeal to more consumers than just chiliheads. Similarly, the same methods can be used on other extremely hot chilies to make them more tolerable to the average human being. By doing so, it opens up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Essay on Red Hot Chili Peppers Red Hot Chili Peppers A passion for foods from the American Southwest is sweeping through the country. The main component and most popular item of this fad is the chili pepper, an item of tremendous variability and a staple of many people in Central America. In this country, chili peppers were once only found in specialized ethnic stores, but now it is just as likely to be found at the neighborhood Kroger. For most people, however, their knowledge stops here. Through this paper I hope to educate the reader on some other aspects of this intriguing vegetable, such as its history, chemistry, and uses. Dr. Chanca described chili peppers as the native's principle food and compared them to the turnip (Andrews 1984). The seeds of the chili pepper were brought back to Spain, where it was grown in monastery gardens. Portuguese traders then spread the chili peppers to many far flung locations, such as India, Indonesia, and Persia (Andrews 1984). Chile peppers became popular due to their great variability in size, shape, and color. Unfortunately, this long proved to be a problem for the taxonomists, who frequently had trouble telling the difference between a different variety and a different species. It wasn't until the 1950's that it was decided that there were five main species of chili peppers, and twenty wild ones (Proulx 1985). The five main species are: Capsicum annum, Capsicum frutescens, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum baccatum, and Capsicum pubescens. However, it is considered impossible to develop a system of classification that would cover all of the chili peppers, due to the great variation among the members of the same species, especially in places such as Mexico (Smith, Villalon, and Villa 1987). Man's interest in chili peppers has resulted in new varieties, such as the TAM Jalapeno, Hidalgo Serrano, and Numex Big Jim, which have a milder flavor or are more resistant to disease. In order to make chili peppers more palatable to the public, chili pepper breeders are breeding varieties that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Being away at college has limited my ability to cook, but I still manage to indulge myself when I'm home during breaks. A dish that I first made about two years ago, and been developing ever since is Chili Verde. The fresh, savory, and slightly sweet cousin of the classic "bowl of red" is something that I've grown fond of eating, but even more so of preparing– of learning the process and how it can be improved. In the years of developing my Chili Verde recipe, I've gained a level of expert in the dish itself, but I've always wanted to better understand the main ingredient: the chilies. I want to learn more about the botany of chili peppers; how they were first cultivated, how they are structured, why they are uniquely spicy and, most importantly, why is their spice appealing? History Somewhat unsurprisingly, chili peppers were first cultivated by humans in Central America. This is pretty intuitive, considering that the first–place Americans think of when it comes to spicy food is Mexico. What is really fascinating, though, is that fact that peppers were native to the New World and did not exist in the Old until they were brought back by traders. That means that for most of the cultures and cuisines for whom spicy peppers are a foundation are really a more recent addition. India, for example, only received their first peppers in the late 15th century. Since then, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All of these delicacies combined made the prom a satisfying experience. I remember vividly the set of hors d'oeurves. The smell of hors d'oeurves served to whet the appetite of all in attendance. The hickory smell of beef stood out to draw everyone near. The shrimp had a salty smell with a hint of ocean water. These measures included putting the measuring cylinders in the water bath/ ice box/ and bench top at the same time, using the same capsicum extract, having the same person record the results and add the capsicum extract. However there were still some results that exhibited error such as collecting the measuring cylinders at different times which prolonged the exposure, as well as have a delay between starting the timer and adding the capsicum extract. Other issues consist of having an uneven layer of foam (O2) which was a random error that made it difficult to record mL, and forgetting to record the temperature of the H2O2. Ideally there should have been a gap between exposing each measuring cylinder to the change in temperature, so once one temperature was recorded the next one was ready rather than them overlapping. Another improvement in the experiment would be to assign the task of timing to one person and adding the extract to another person to diminish the gap between completing each of the tasks*. • 89. The Importance Of Pungent Plants I have always been a chili pepper aficionado who enjoyed the pungency, meaning spiciness, of peppers. So I decided to learn about how to grow chili peppers in my garden. While researching chili pepper growth, I saw that pungent plants had 40% greater density of stomata than non pungent plants. Stomata are pores that allow water and air to enter and exit the plant's cells. So pungent plants experience greater water loss than non pungent plants do. Pungent plants have more stomata than non pungent plants because the proteins involved in pungency and building stomata are regulated by the same pathway. (CSMonitor) I became curious on how the amount of water a pungent chili pepper has affects it. Water, a fundamental component of life, allows all living beings to exist. Plants are no exception. Plants utilize water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and sunlight to undergo the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the method plants use to create food. During photosynthesis, plants use six molecules of water, six molecules of CO2, and sunlight to produce one molecule of sugar and six molecules of oxygen. This reaction, modeled by the equation 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight → C6H12O6 + 6O2, demonstrates the essentialness of water in the survival of plants. Water is a crucial component of photosynthesis because it permits plants to produce food that they need to sustain themselves. Food gives plants the energy to perform many functions, such as reproduction and the production of chemicals. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

[2] These riot control agents have also been referred to as lacrimators, tear gases, harassing agents, and irritating agents. Since its development, riot control agents have been used in wars, civil disturbances, as well as military training and exercises. While Chemical Weapons Convention prohibited the use of these agents as a method of warfare, USA currently does not classify riot control agents as chemical warfare agents. [3] Today, the most commonly used lacrimating agents are chloroacetophenone (CN), o–chloro–benzylidne malonitrile (CS), and oleoresin capsicum (OC). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... [4] Although it was never used during World War I, CN quickly became the primary riot control and military training compound used by the military and law enforcement agencies. Initially the all tear gas weapons utilized a form of an explosive in order to dispel the CN. A typical tear gas weapon would fire a cartridge that is packed with CN powder and an explosive charge. It was in 1965 that CN started to be available in a form of pressurized aerosol spray under the brand name Mace. • 101. The Mind : Paper Two Phi of Mind: Paper Two I. Introduction In this paper, four important features of qualia will be made explicit. From these, we will examine two specific features of qualia (privacy and immediate apprehensibility) which Dennett attempts to debunk in his article, Quining Qualia. His reasoning – in the form of intuition pumps – will be critiqued, and a rejection formulated. II. Qualities of Qualia Qualia are traditionally held to possess four characteristics that make them unique. They are ineffable, intrinsic, private, and immediately apprehensible within consciousness. Listing these attributes is all well and good, but what are they? Ineffability refers to the incommunicability of qualia. Attempting to use language to capture qualia seems to miss part of the experience, or to reduce and simplify the experience until it can be made to conform to what language can communicate. Qualia seems so content–rich that moving it into public understanding necessarily entails its simplification. Consider the jalapeño and habanero peppers. If I were to eat both, I would experience two separate qualia – one for the jalapeno and one for the habanero. In language, I could describe both as 'spicy'. More practically, I could describe the jalapeno as 'very spicy' and the habanero as 'mutilatingly spicy '. I could be as creative or precise as possible to try to relay the qualia of the peppers, and I could certainly give a listener an image of some sort of quale one might have. Still, there ... • 135. Jumping Bean Lab Report The Mexican Jumping Bean is indigenous to Mexico and has a peculiar life cycle. The process begins when a moth (Cydia deshaisiana) lays its egg inside a plant (Sebastiania pavoniana) then the egg incorporates itself with the seed of the flower. When the larvae hatches it eats its way to the inside of the flower. It lives their until the spring rains come which separates the seed into 3 pieces (Each of those pieces harden and turn into a brownish color.) and one of those pieces is where the larvae is. This means that the larvae is trapped inside the bean. From then on the bean becomes part of the larvae and until the larva turns into a moth it is part of it. Finally after some time the bean will spin a silk cocoon and then go dormant for a few days. Afterwards it will reemerge as a moth. It will then live for some days before it dies after it becomes a moth. During its lifetime as a bean it "jumps" or moves a little bit every so often. We then put the petri dish inside a cup of ice which lowered the temperature drastically. We conducted this experiment 5 times and had the same result every time the Jumping Bean did not jump at all. We graphed both tests on a graph to better compare the differences. As we analyzed the results of our experimentation we discovered that when the temperature was dropped the bean stopped jumping and seemed to go dormant which proved that our predictions were correct after examining the ... Unfortunately, your idea of fine dining at home is Raman Noodles served in a bowl and not in the foam cup. Raman Noodles, even served in a bowl, will not impress any date. Now picture yourself sharing a warm, freshly crafted pizza. A pizza with fried chicken smothered with provolone cheese. A pizza with a pop of flavor provided by bell peppers. A pizza seamlessly put together with ranch dressing. This simple recipe for chicken ranch pizza will make you resistible to any date. To complete the following recipe, you will need one boneless chicken breast (an ideal size for the chicken breast is the size of your hand), soy sauce, lemon juice, a bell pepper, shredded provolone cheese, salt, Cayenne pepper, flour, olive oil, one large egg, and one frozen cheese pizza (preferably Di Giorno rising crust). First you need to prep the chicken breast. If your chicken breast is frozen, let your chicken breast thaw. To speed up the thawing process, you may use a microwave. However, set the microwave to defrost mode before thawing your chicken, which will prevent the chicken from drying out and will keep the chicken moist. Thaw the chicken, on defrost mode, for approximately five to six minutes. After thawing the chicken, take a sharp knife and make a horizontal cut across the middle of the breast. Always act carefully when working knives. Remember to keep the blade down and always cut away from yourself. Cut the chicken into long strips with roughly one–quarter inch of thickness. Reducing the thickness of the breast will reduce the amount of time needed to cook the chicken fully. Now make a vertical cut every half inch to both strips of chicken. The chicken pieces should resemble the size and shape of your middle and ring finger combined. After cutting the chicken, wash hands thoroughly with warm water and soap. Always wash your hands after touching raw meat to prevent cross commination. Do not touch any other ingredient before washing your hands. Next you need to assemble the marinade for the chicken. These rubber bullets can be shot from a standard police handgun. The bullet has a metal shell casing but instead of a metal bullet it is replaced by a black thick rubber projectile. In riots, the police will attempt to aim for any area below the neck; when the bullet hits an object it flattens out in order to cause no permanent damage. Efficacy Of Tea Tree Oil Efficacy of Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), Honey, and Capsicum annuum Against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli Kenzie Perryman, Daniela Perez, and Alexa West Department of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences, College of Agriculture, Science and Engineering, West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX 79016 November 8, 2015 This experiment was designed to examine the efficacy of naturally occurring antimicrobials against common bacteria located in a normal human microbiome. Three antimicrobials, Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, commercial honey, and Capsicum annuum (red chili pepper), were tested on the gram negative Escherichia coli and the gram positive Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Quantitative data was taken using the filter–paper disk method to determine the zones of inhibition produced by the three antimicrobials. The results collected showed that Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil is an effective broad spectrum antimicrobial, while honey produced partial inhibition with an outer ring of stimulation signifying that the honey is merely bacteriostatic for a short period of time before growth reoccurs. The Capsicum annuum (red chili pepper) stimulated bacterial growth indicating possible contamination or lack of antimicrobial properties. In order to detect the capsaicin that is found in the foods that you eat, your body has receptors on sensory neurons. The receptors are known as capsaicin receptors and found in the dendrites of the sensory neurons better known as nociceptors. (Caterina) When your body receives that feeling of pain or heat, it is due to capsaicin receptor recognizing capsaicin, but also the ability of the capsaicin receptor to act as an ion channel, which is found in a category known as the transient receptor potential channels. (Fox) Capsaicin will stimulate and excite the capsaicin receptor. When the receptor is excited it allows the entrance of Calcium (Ca+2) and Sodium (Na+).
