Perfume hides the body odor that emits from the human body, just as science withholds important information from society to protect the minds of the
citizens because science sometimes contains information that may be too much to handle. When science claims a discovery, it sometimes ends up
being ridiculous. SГјskind mentions several philosophes, however, one philosophe in particular, Marquis De Sade, closely relates to Grenouille in the
sense of living a life unbound by religion or law. SГјskind shows the absurdity of science when Talliade–Espinasse claims that the Earth's
poisonousness gas makes men die and that a bull's semen can produce a milk animal–vegetable hybrid. Since society learns from science, they believe
every theory that presents itself to them. SГјskind's method for revealing deception intertwines with irony and satire. He accomplishes this by creating
confusion within society, like the citizens of Grasse look for the murderer, when the readers already know who the murderer is. Grenouille's odors
confuse the citizens because his odors deceive their perceptions. However, science tries to increase the amount of knowledge available, whereas
Grenouille manipulates perfume to acquire whichever items necessary. "His odor of innocence touched" the heart's of others making them to believe
that his character consists of loyalty and good behavior, but underneath the odor that emits innocence, lies deception (183). "Another perfume in his
[Grenouille's] arsenal was a scent for arousing sympathy that proved effective" to deceive others to provide him with the items necessary to extract the
odor of the girls, which remains to be the essential ingredient for his artificial scent (183). As science continues to progress throughout the novel,

It is evident throughout many places in the book that Baldini's perfumery skill are quite poor and much of his success is based off of other people's
work. This is in complete contrast to Grenouille, whose love and talent for olfactory senses far exceeds Baldini's. This is evident when Grenouille
awakes from his sickness and states, "Tell me, maftre, are there other ways to extract the scent from things besides pressing or distilling?" – (104).
Baldini quickly responded and told Grenouille that there were three other ways in which he could extract scent, however these methods are only
present down the south of France. It is evident that Baldini and Grenouille share major differences when it comes to natural talent, as Baldini can no
longer make perfume, while Grenouille is one of the most naturally gifted perfumers in the whole of France. However it is also evident that this
horrific experience that Grenouille went through, with the disease known as small pox, led him in the search for his own personal identity as a
