Silent Spring Vs Nobel Speech
In this unit it talks about if people have effects on the environment and they gave us some stories about it. Are the needs of people ever more important
than the needs of animals and the planet? I think the people's needs are more important than the needs of the animal's and the planet because it states in
the "Nobel Speech" and "Silent Spring".
To begin, as it states in the "Nobel Speech" Al Gore says that we need to save us fromclimate change. In the "Nobel Speech" Al Gore the U.S vice
president won an award and he gave a speech. He will talk about how we change the climate change and then there might be some problems in the
future like the ice caps.
Next, in "Silent Spring" the author says that the human needs are better than the animals

Silent Spring, By Rachel Carson
An activist is defined as someone who crusades for some kind of societal change. To be considered an effective activist, the individual would need to
influence a transformation in the world, causing a change and reshaping a perception. Rachel Carson, best known as the author of Silent Spring, is said
to be one of the most influential women in environmental history, according to her fellow authors and conservationists. Carson has been recognized
worldwide in history and science books for her campaign against DDT, her work as a conservationist, and her efforts to change society's view of the
planet.
In Silent Spring Ms. Carson brought the adverse effects of a toxic commonly, used pesticide to the forefront of the environmental movement. DDT
was being used commercially to treat crops and was destroying the surrounding ecosystem (Carson). She published her findings from experiments she
conducted in the early 1950s in Silent Spring. However, it was not an easy piece to have published, especially not in the 1950s. Carson's work
challenged mainstream thought and went on to change it, even in a time when women were not particularly powerful or respected. Many criticized
Carson for her challenging ideas and her outspokenness, but in 1962, her battle to be published was made a triumph. The book led to a presidential
commission by John F. Kennedy. Through Carson's publication, the danger of the use of DDT was realized and later banned in the United States.

Analysis Of Out Of The Silent Planet By C. S. Lewis
Virtue is a quality that one possesses. But how can virtue be attained? Does someone simply decide they want to be virtuous? The question I am
focusing on is as follows: Is avoiding evil sufficient to make one virtuous or must virtue be an active choice? Upon hearing this question I
immediately thought "of course just avoiding evil alone doesn't make one virtuous", but as I began to think more deeply about the question and to
analyze examples from "Out Of The Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis, it started to change what I thought. I do think that virtue is an active choice, however
I also think avoiding evil is active choice. Avoiding evil does make one virtuous, but requires an active choice. They can't live without out one another.

Period 1
Major Works Data Sheet
Title of the Work: The Martian Chronicles
Author: Ray Bradbury
Date of Publication: 1950
Genre: Novel
Historical Information: The novel had taken place on the planet Mars. During the 1700s, telescopes were beginning to get popular, and more common
used by astrologists to observer planets, such as mars. People from Earth believed that all the planets were inhabited by intelligent living things like
humans. In the 1800's people were certain there was intelligent life on Mars because Schiaparelli, an astronomer who was studying the surface of mars,
called them "canali". People had misinterpreted this and thought there were intelligent life forms living on Mars, smart enough to make a system of
canals.
Plot Summary: A female Martian begins to dream about people that were different from them. These people from her dream land on the planet Mars
but die shortly after they landed on the red planet. On the second expedition, the captain and his crew explored around Mars and discovers houses and
towns, but all they wanted was to get a little bit of fame and recognition for traveling from the third planet to the fourth. Due to bragging about it, the
Martians thought they've gone insane and they're hallucinating others to trying to believe them. The psychologist concludes that they've gone insane
and shoots the captain and his crewmates, but thinks they've transferred their insanity to him, so he kills himself as well. On the third

Blue Lake Research Paper
Images of a blue lake have been found on the surface of Mars. NASA experts are confused, but what seem to be even stranger is the apparent sighting
of a humanoid alien walking along the red planet. Is this just a hoax or does the space agency have some explaining to do?
NASA SILENT ABOUT BLUE LAKE ONMARS
According to a new Google Maps image of mars, UFO Channel thridphaseofthemoon has pointed out a blue lake on the surface of the red planet. NASA
has not made any formal statement regarding the lake. Perhaps they are trying to hide the presence of alien life on the planet or perhaps this sighting is
simply a mistake. Either way, someone has some explaining to do. Aside from the apparent lake, another mystery seems to be lurking around.

Biological Pesticides In Silent Spring By Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring, a book that is often viewed as a landmark work of environmental writing, was the result of several different
events that caused her to pay attention to the results of the use of different pesticides to control insect populations in America following World War II.
In her book she discusses the different kinds of chemicals our governments have been using and the damage they have all been proven to be causing to
the environment, animals, and of course, humans. She provided evidence towards the correlation of cancer cases in combination with these chemicals,
and advocated for the possibility of biological pest control. In Silent Spring, Carson attacks pesticides and notes their effects on the world's ecosystems

Even though, at the time of writing Silent Spring, synthetic pesticides had only been distributed for twenty years, they had already saturated the
human, plant, and animal worlds. From Carson's perspective, these death–dealing materials of insecticides are marketed cheerfully to consumers,
without traditional poison warnings (174). In fact, only 15 out of 100 people even read the labels for the chemical products they buy (177). They
destroy enzymes, enzymes that are specifically there to protect the body. They also block oxidation, thus blocking the body's ability to receive energy
which can make organs malfunction. Worst of all, these pesticides have all scientifically been linked to certain types of cancers and tumors. Because
of the unpredictable, hard to see, and delayed effects of absorbing small amounts of pesticides over time, it becomes easy to ignore the problem.
Humans seem programmed to shrug off disasters in the distant future, concerned only with those effects that can be seen immediately. Carson argues
that the mass amount of unawareness of the true danger potential of these chemicals is the reason why many people are getting sick, simply because
they don't know what's hurting them. When pesticides and other chemicals meant for food and cleaning products are deemed as "safe", the vast
majority of people are going to believe so, therefore continue using

Pest Control In Silent Spring
Rachel Carson's Silent Spring is still today as controversial, groundbreaking, and relevant as it was when it was first published in 1962. The book
argues that uncontrolled and unexamined pesticide use harms and even kills not only animals, but humans too. Carson documents the negative effects
of pesticides on the environment. The text includes strong accusations against the chemical industry and a call to look at how the use of chemicals can
cause damage and impact the world around us. The book's intended audience is the general public because Carson wants to bring the problem of harmful
pesticide use to everyone's attention. She also successfully demonstrates the fragility of the biodiversity on the planet and emphasizes how chemical
use can have large repercussions.
"How could intelligent beings seek to control a few unwanted species by a method that contaminated the entire environment and brought the threat of
disease and death event to their own kind?"(8) Rachel Carson's question, asked in Silent Spring, requires the reader to take stock in the conditions under
which Americans at the time were dealing with pest control. The title, Silent Spring, comes from the silence in many forests and meadows due to the
poisoning of songbirds, insects and other invertebrates, and even plants. This now historical account of the use of pesticides has raised America's
awareness of the dangers of agricultural chemicals that had become commonly accepted during this time.

Summary Of Out Of The Silent Planet
"Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis portrays elements of Christianity by asking the question: "What would a planet that never experienced sin
or its effects look like?" He asks this question by telling the story of a man named Ransom, who finds himself abducted on a mysterious planet called
Malacandra. Here, Ransom is astonished by the ways of the native species of Malacandra, to which sin is a foreign idea. Only when humans inhabited
Malacandra did corruption enter the planet. Lewis succeeds in creating an image of a world without sin, making readers to see Christianity from a
different perspective. Out of the Silent Planet begins by embarking us on the adventures of the philologist Dr. Ransom, who is plucked from humanity

The Effective Use Of Pesticides In Rachel Carson's Silent...
In her revolutionary masterpiece, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson brilliantly and elegantly works to inform the public on the risks of carelessly using
pesticides and insecticides as a sort of panacea for all pests and annoyances, and works to shed light on the damage that had already been done at the
point of the book's publication in 1962. As discussed in the book's introduction by Al Gore, at the time of writing, Rachel Carson was enduring intense
medical radiation and died, two years after publishing the book, of breast cancer – which has been found to be linked to toxic chemicals possibly
coming from insecticides. That being said, Al Gore notes, " In a sense, Carson was literally writing for her life," but she was also writing, "against the...

Though Rachel Carson was not the first to bring up such issues of insecticides – beekeepers and ornithologists had already been filing insecticide
related lawsuits in the 1950s – , she was the first to bring it to the attention of the general population, which in my opinion is one of the most important
steps an environmentalist can take. It would be unreasonable for Carson to believe that she could singlehandedly stop the use of insecticides and
automatically make the world a safe and poison free place, but by bringing such issues to the public eye, she was able to ignite something within the
people which would then spread from person to person, state to state, and eventually to government officials who have the power to permanently make
a change. Furthermore, though this may not have been her intention, the effects that Silent Spring had on our world and society as a whole expands
exponentially farther than the single subject of insecticides. In the book's introduction, Al Gore eloquently notes that Carson, "brought us back to a
fundamental idea lost to an amazing degree in modern civilization : the interconnection of human beings and the natural environment." And, today,
though our world still faces many environmental issues and there are still many who do not believe in the importance or even existence of such issues,
the use of such insecticides discussed in

immense universe that surrounds us and it is with humility and hope that we take this step."
–– Former Secretary–General Kurt Waldheim, 1977
The day European stepped on African continent and began enslaving the black Africans was doomed to be one of the most disgraceful days in the
history of mankind. When they were sold as tools, nobody considered them as our fellow humans. It was their poverty and backwardness that made
them unable to fight against. So far as we can see, similar tragedies happened again and again throughout the history of humanity. In the final analysis,
the reason is that we human beings lack a sense of sympathy towards aliens, especially when they are much weaker than us. So do extraterrestrials, who
might be mush stronger than us. By rights, having a so good understanding of human history and human nature, we should know how dangerous to
contact with another strange civilization, and keep us away from that danger. But we don't. We spread to all aliens the radio in this

Character Analysis Of Out Of The Silent Planet
Personality is something that can be defined as "the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character"(
English, Oxford Dictionaries). In the book "Out of the Silent Planet" written by C.S Lewis you are able to see how the main characters Weston,
Ransom and Divine each contribute their own personalities and viewpoints to the story. Since their philosophies are vastly different from one
another this takes a effect of the story. The characters of the novel "Out of the Silent planet" not only affect how decisions are made but also the
effect their attitudes create when interactions take place in the book. Ransom as being a main character in the story has a very distinctive
characteristic. This all begins with learning that Ransom is philologist from Cambridge University that is seeking a adventure by taking his walking
journey. With being a philologist this influences his personality by him not only having a eagerness to learn but also with the drive to want to know
the unknown. However this takes a tole on him in the beginning of the story when he is living in fear while on his journey to malacandra but as well
as while he is there. A article relating to the explanation of Ransoms character says "Sometimes his emotions are tied to specific objects; at other
times "he did not even know what he was afraid of: the fear itself possessed his whole mind, a formless, infinite misgiving""(Schwartz, Sanford). This
quote explains and shows

The Silent Planet By. Lewis And The Three Stigmata Of...
Humanity has always maintained a strong bond between thought and action. It is through our ethical and moral beliefs that we reinforce our mentality
on life. In both Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Phillip K. Dick, the protagonists and the story
interact in a similar fashion. These novels portray many fundamental religious theories that directly mesh with human values. Characterized by their
subjective actions, the main characters in these novels are motivated most strongly by the mythic dimension of the sacred, which reveals human
inclination to think rationally about humanity's past. Mike Alsford created four categories that identify a human being. Human as a subject is the
category that most pertain to both novels. This stresses the ability to think rationally about one's self and ideologies that stem from human
characteristics. The personalities in both novels implement a great amount of thought about their predicament and their moral values. Through such
thought, a religious context is existent from both stories, as the main characters in both are faced with a presumed "higher power," supernatural force
that has a vast control on the everyday life of humanity. Human as a subject will be applied throughout the analysis of both stories. It will be used to
address the notion of one's ability to interpret the underlying religious themes in each story. Thought provokes human identity and it is essential to the

What Is The Mood Of Silent Spring By Rachel Carson
Silent Spring Rachel Carson was an environmental advocate who believed that us humans, are responsible for the Earth and how it will turn out
in future years. She showed the readers of Silent Spring a very vivid image of an idyllic planet. She also showed an even more vivid image of the
planet in a type of "void". Rachel Carson uses imagery, contrast and, inductive reasoning to get her message across. Starting with the imagery that
was used throughout the passage. In the first two paragraphs Carson used very vivid, colorful words like, "In autumn, oak and maple and birch set up
a blaze of color that flamed and flickered across a backdrop of pines." (1). This type of wording really paints a picture of a perfect utopia. The words

Blood Metaphors
Blood stained the pages of our history books. So many innocent Vitaevim lives lost in the pursuit of a place to call home. Lost in space or slaughtered
by the Malum, the evil being that haunted our universe. Greedy things that were never satisfied by what they had, always wanting for more. They tore
apart planets, ripped them limb by limb, suffocated them with pollution, and drowned them with the blood of my people. The stories say that once, way
back to the third planet, there was peace, until one day the ground shook and the great pillars of the pearl city and their shimmery marble rooftops came
smashing down, the ground beating it like a husband. A flood surged throughout the city stealing children from their mothers and the innocent play...

Out Of The Silent Planet Hero's Journey
In the postmodern period of films, film–makers are constantly pushing the boundaries of genre definitions, as well as putting different genres into
various new combinations. One such combination is the "fantasy–adventure" genre; This genre can be defined as narratives in which an otherworldly
figure or situation interrupts the human real world or a human is a part of an otherworldly lifestyle. Within these parameters, the protagonist must
overcome obstacles in a world full of physical and moral peril and accomplish a critical mission in order to save the society from whence they came.
In short, the "fantasy–adventure" genre comes from the use of adventure stories to realistically ground the fantastical surroundings and situations in

C.S. Lewis and the Influence of Dante in Out of the Silent Planet All throughout Lewis novels there is evidence that clearly connects the themes and
symbolism from other aspects of traditional Christian literature both during and before he began writing. One of the most distinct examples of this
occurring within Lewis' works is the influence that Dante had on the concepts that he reflects on while conveying thoughts to his readers. This is
specifically more notable a connection between Dante and Lewis when you examine the parallels that take place within Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet
and Dante's Inferno. The literary tradition left behind by Dante is both one able to influence the thoughts of others and to teach the value of
Christianity through within a fictional environment. This is similar to Lewis' Space Trilogy in more ways than one, some of which include Ransom
journey in place of the pilgrim as he travels through strange, new, territory in order to reach his goal, and the use of Malacandra to represent the levels
of Hell. Each book in the Space Trilogy continues to expand on the possible influence that Dante may have had on Lewis while he wrote these books
and aims to show Christians the truth behind the Dante's thoughts through the use of science fiction. Many elements found within Dante's Inferno are
reintroduced through new ideas by Lewis within Out of the Silent Planet in order to convey Christian thoughts and

In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar,William Golding's Lord of the Flies , and C. S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet all depict how
mankind is born innocent and turned to evil. The stories show that this conversion to evil is caused by the influence of society or characters acting in
the place of a society. The corruptibility of mankind is illuminated in these texts. The treachery, dishonesty, and murder as shown in the stories are not
acts of innocence. In their books, the authors point out that mankind is not innately evil but instead born innocent and converted to evil by society.

Golding uses the characters from Lord of the Flies just as Shakespeare did to prove that man is turned to evil. The narrative illustrates a story about
a group of British boys who get stranded on a deserted island without any adults. This lack of a stable society and presence of leadership forces the
boys to create their own, and this works for the boys for a while. The boys turn themselves into savages and begin to do evil deeds which continue
to get worse until they are rescued. In the time between their rescue, the society the boys create devolves and turns them into savages although this
was not always the case. When the boys first arrived, Ralph, the fair haired boy, attempts to lead them in a civilized manner, but through the
influence of Jack, many of the boys become evil. Jack mutants against Ralph saying, " I'm not going to be a part of Ralph lot... I'm going off by
myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too," (Golding 127) in saying this Jack has made most of the
boys on the island betray their leader which proves both Jack and his followers to be evil. The society the boys created glorifies violence and death:"...

Rachel Carson Silent Spring Quote
Chase kaltner
The world is being sickened by the needs of man in today's society. People, love to live in luxury without knowing the consequences of their actions.
This is because man lives at a pace set by himself, and not one that is naturally set by nature. This is shown excellently in a quote inside of the novel
Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. The Quote states, "the rapidity of change and the speed with which new situations are created follow the impetuous
and heedless pace of man rather than the deliberate pace of nature." The Earth is experiencing such rapid and disastrous change due to the wants of
man. Man demands too much from the earth and not only is this changing the Earth, but it is also depleting many non renewable resources ... Show

This is shown very well in Silent spring. "So to the potentially dangerous dangerous fumes from gasoline are to the finely divided particles of whatever

renewable resources that are leaving a harmful effect on the environment. This is done by the use of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels such as gasoline
are burned they produce co2. This is very harmful because the co2 becomes trapped in the atmosphere. This thickens the atmosphere in a sense, and
does not allow heat to escape as easily. This is what is thought to be causing global warming, and could lead to some disastrous changes. This
includes rising sea levels, heating of the surface of the ocean, possible changes in ocean circulation, possible effects on the habitats of animals, etc. All
of this is due to us burning fossil fuels so it would be known as our ecological

Virtue In Ransom's Out Of The Silent Planet
"Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it." – David Starr Jordan
Virtue is defined as "moral excellence; goodness; righteousness" (dictionary.com) and is an active choice. In the book Out of the Silent Planet, Ransom,
a wandering traveler, proved it throughout the book. In particular, there are three times where he made a choice that either demonstrated virtue or
immorality. The first was at the beginning of the book when he found the boy at the professor's house; The second was when he lied about Earth, and
the third was when he obeyed Oysara's instruction to return to Earth.
The first example of virtue being an active choice was when Ransom found the boy at the professor's house. Although he would rather travel straight to
the next town, Ransom agreed to send home a boy to his anxious mother. By going under the hedge, Ransom trespassed, risking the wrath of the
owners. Keeping your word is morally excellent and good, which makes this choice virtuous.
The second example is when Ransom lied to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ransom preferred Malacandra to his home planet because the humans were "bent" or sinful, whereas the seroni, hrossa, and Pfifltriggi were not sinful.

supply. Ransom and the two other humans risked suffocation before landing on Earth. Despite the danger, Ransom submitted to Oysara's authority.
Romans 13:1–2 declares. "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The
authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted,
and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." As the Bible verse stated, obeying authorities is moral and right, making this a virtuous

Out of the Silent Planet

C.S. Lewis produced a book that conveys vivid scenery, relatable characters, and a vague but detailed plot that gave rise to a novel with wonderful
clarity. Out of the Silent Planet is an account of the voyage of Ransom, a linguist, who is kidnapped and taken to another planet, Malacandra (Mars).
Where he learns that Thulcandra (Earth) is called the silent planet because there has been no communication from it in years. On the voyage there he
is led to believe he will be sacrificed. Instead, the creatures that inhabit the other world reveal extraordinary secrets about the nature of man and the

As the character Ransom walked across England the reader felt as if beside him the whole way. When he visited Mars, even with the bizarre scenery it
seemed so real.
"He saw nothing but colours – colours that refused to form themselves into things. Moreover, he new nothing yet well enough to see it: you can not
see things till you know roughly what they are. His first impression was a bright, pale world – a water–coloured world out of a child's paint box."
Lewis also has a gift for making strong points in his novel without making the reader feel guilty, because he uses such human characters that are
filled with normal and relatable flaws. Even with the main character's name, Ransom he sends a message, because as you read this book, you will
see how his name comes to play. This book is very involved and it's not a book to be taken lightly. This is a book with a lot of inner meaning. Ittalks
about the dark side of humanity. Filled with comedy, action, suspense andscience fiction. But though it's not a very long book, it really doesn't need to

The plot was uncertain at times but overall was detailed enough to present the over all struggle of one mans' journey through the cosmos. The
transitions from one chapter to the next were very well organized. Through many weeks passes in the book, it seamed to flow into one seamless
efficiently written story.

Out of the silent planet
Out of the silent planet by C.S Lewis is a novel that denotes the difference between the social system on planet earth and the planet Malacandra. In
Malacandra, groups live in harmony with one another and complement each other. On earth, the social system is brutal and evil. The novel is a science

planet by accident after being kidnapped by two evil men (Devine and Weston) and transported to the planet Malacandra (Mars) by spacecraft. In Planet

This is different to what happens on earth where groups are in constant dominance wars, often breaking into factions that regard each other as
inherently inferior. The kidnappers, Devine and Weston represent this dominance character of Earthly beings.
On earth, people are self–centered and do not care for each other. In contrast, On Malacandra, various species live and work together (Gibbons 88).
There three intelligent species in Malacandra and their differences of knowledge is their strength. The pfifltriggi excavate and makes things out of their
excavation, the Seroni are the master of knowledge and the hrossa were poets (Lewis, 68). Even with these different talents, there is no group that
wants to dominate the other. They know that they have differences but have accepted them since "they can talk to each other, they can cooperate, and
they have the same ethics" (Lewis 156).
The leadership system on earth is also different from the other planets. Unlike the earth, all the other planets have a structured leadership; they have
a ruler (Oyarsa). The earth is unruly because people have no common Oyarsa and this makes people bent. Everyone on earth wants to be a little
Oyarsa himself (Lewis 102). The Oyarsa of Malacandra, in reference to the actions of Devine and Weston of kidnapping, is surprised how 'any

Summary Of C. S. Lewis Out Of The Silent Planet
People across the globe have been afraid of extraterrestrial beings for centuries. Most of these fears are brought about by the thought that any being
that is more technologically advanced will inevitably want to bring destruction to all humans. Many people think this due to the history of human
beings that shows those who come up with a better technology use that as power to be wielded against others. C.S. Lewis in Out of the Silent
Planet shows that humans tend to fear the possible power of beings that are different and are technologically advanced. His characters show
continuously the views that humans have for new or different beings. He constantly gives examples throughout the book of the ways humans look
at, down at or up to, creatures of different levels of intelligence and of different appearances. The three species of "aliens" in this book give a good
example of how well a society could work together if they looked at their differences as ways to help each other, rather than looking at them as a way
to differ between higher and lower class. The creatures disregard appearance and intelligence and show just how little those characteristics matter in the
total scheme of things. This time period involved many authors who wrote about the topic of extraterrestrial beings to ease the... Show more content on

Lewis worked as an influential advocate for the Christian faith during the 1900s. In fact his radio talks on Christianity and hot, controversial topics
were known widely across the UK, second only to Churchill (Downing xx). Lewis wrote and spoke very openly about his religious opinions and
beliefs, especially after returning to Christianity as a middle–aged man. He used many Biblical illusions throughout most of his writings, most
famously being the portrayal of Aslan as Jesus with the earthquake at his death and his eventual

Out Of The Silent Planet Analysis
Individuality on Malacandra and on Earth In Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis, there are many different species of beings that all live on
Malacandra and are able to get along with each other, whereas on Earth, humans are always trying to be better than everyone else at all that we do.
Due to this drastic change in the way of living, the beings of Malacandra seem to have a perception that differs greatly from that of the humans on
Earth. Thus life on Malacandra is better than life on Earth because those on Malacandra celebrate individual abilities and those on Earth are pressured
to be good at just about everything. On Malacandra, the three species– Hrossa, Seroni and Pfifltriggi, all seem to have a certain level or respect for each
other.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of these three species are able to accept the others and often help each other when there is need simply because they ask for something. Hyoi
explains when stating, "If the other hnau wanted food, why should we not give it to them? We often do" (Lewis 73). This shows that the differing
species have learned how to live together, accept each other, and learn to share their resources for the betterment of the other species. Due to those
on Malacandra being able to put aside their differences and accept the individuality that is exemplified by the different species, they are able to
live a very good life in which needs of others are satisfied by those who can help. This idea of helping others who are different than ourselves is
one of the key reasons why those on Malacandra live a better life than those on Earth who are unable for the most part to put aside our differences in
order to help those among us in need. Instead of helping others when needed, those on Earth tend to go to war over resources that, if shared willingly
could be used to help better all cultures involved. This concept is one in which those on Malacandra seem to have grasped and are living much better
lives because of accepting others individuality and how it differs from their

Out Of The Flies, And C. S. Lewis's Out Of The Flies
That Hideous Evil
In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, William Golding's Lord of the Flies, and C.
In their books, the authors point out that mankind is not innately evil, but instead born innocent and converted to evil by society.
The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is a story about the death of the first Roman dictator, Julius Caesar. Caesar's followers kill him in order to end his reign of
power. Brutus, one of Caesar's murderers and close friends, is a perfect example of a man turned to evil. Brutus was innocent; Mark Antony, Caesar's
successor and Brutus's enemy, goes as far as to say Brutus "was the most noblest Roman of them all" (5.5.68). Brutus's innocence is show before the
killing of Caesar when Brutus struggles with the thought of killing Caesar even though he thought it would save Rome. Brutus wished to help Rome
although he did not want to harm his friend, nor did Brutus want to harm anyone else. The conspirators who killed Caesar also wanted to kill Antony
but Brutus persuaded them to let Antony live. Brutus is a kind man. This is shown in his great respect for his servant

In the book "Out of the Silent Planet" C.S. Lewis talks about science and the meaning of life which each character has their own point of view on,
Ransom, Devon and Weston Looked at life differently than the other each having their own choice. One cares about others, one cares about their
self and the other cares about Power. Ransom was a loving a caring man, he often put others above himself and wanted to help others. "At first I
thought this was because you cared only whether a creature had a body like your own; but Ransom has that." (Page. 135) Ransom had a caring

Short Story
Red eyes were burning like fire in the shadowy moonlight, as Walter Pearson stood in the gloom of the giant ruins. Standing over 200 feet tall the
stone statues seemed to be staring at Walter with watchful eyes. Carved in the ceiling was a golden dome. Standing beside Walter was Andrew Mal
who was also staring awestruck with amazement. Although he was nervous, Walter tried not to show it. He saw shadows in the stone, terror on this
new planet and might not even see his parents again. Walter Pearson lived on 1000 Belview Avenue in Florida. His curiosity heightened his
intelligence. For a thirteen year old boy like Walter he was very independent. His parents had not been home for some time now. They left because the

Walter kept asking people where his parents were. All the people kept saying was they never had seen them. They had to have been to thehotel
sometime. It was a stopping point for all who ventured to this new planet. Andrew kept reassuring Walter his parents were not here. Unconvinced,
Walter kept looking around for any clue that would let him know his parents had been there. There it was!! Walter spotted a backpack with his last
name, "Pearson," stitched on the outside. Walter was right, his parents had been to the hotel. Andrew was quick to tell Walter that it could have been
any backpack. Walter felt an ominous silence from Andrew. What was wrong with Andrew, thought Walter. Andrew had been Walter's friend for a long
time and he trusted him. Why was he so quick to tell him he was wrong? It seemed as though Andrew didn't want Walter to find his parents. Walter
decided to open the backpack to confirm what he believed. Inside was his dad's camera and journal. All went silent except the thumping of Walter's
heart. Thump .... thump... thump... While relieved to know his parents had been at the hotel, Walter was confused and scared about why the hotel
people had lied to him, why his friend Andrew was still trying to convince him that his parents were not there, and why his dad would be anywhere
without his camera and journal. Walter wasn't sure who he could trust, but there was

Nobel Speech Vs Silent Fire
What would you do if you woke up and thought, "The only thing we did to our world is destroy it."As depicted in the text "Silent Spring" and "Nobel
Speech", pollution is the most significant effect people have on the environment.
In "Silent Spring" it states that, "On the farms the hens brooded, but no chickens hatched. The farmers complained that they were unable to raise any
pigs." This is significant because it explains how our plants and animals will survive with all of the pesticides, and pollution. Us as people will also have
a hard time to survive. One example is all of the smog and the pollution will block the sun from shining down on our earth.
In paragraph 24 of "Nobel Speech" it states that, "Now scientist are warning us that

The Theme Of Time-Travel In C. S. Lewis Out Of The Silent...
Back in 1938, C.S. Lewis, the British novelist, wrote his first book in his space trilogy called Out of the Silent Planet. He had soon written the novel
after conversing with J.R.R. Tolkien about space controversies. Tolkien wrote about time–travel whereas Lewis wrote about space–travel. Lewis writes
his tale that introduces Dr. Ransom as a main character, but he is abducted by a narcissistic man who soon wants to use him as a human sacrifice.
There is a belief system as well as strong forces of good and evil that reside in Earth and Mars. Because of the symbols from the Bible, one could
indicate that there is at least a slight religious impact on the characters. Even though there are some who are not impacted by belief of one true God,
religion is strongly and continuously showed throughout the book. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is the concept that Satan came to tempt Adam and Eve, who soon disobeyed God. This dilemma caused sin to come into the world. Temptation
in this story, in many cases, is Satan's way to get humans who have succumbed to their sins. On the opposing side of evil, Jesus, the son of God, is the
saving grace who died on the cross to redeem humanity. Christianity is not the religion in this story, but there are aspects from the Bible in Out of the
Silent Planet. There are angel–like creatures who cannot be perceived by the human eye besides a few glimmers. Creatures with humans craving to
be like them, "It is because they have no Oyarsa,' said one of the pupils. 'It is because everyone of them wants to be a little Oyarsa himself,' said

that entail that Earth is consumed by evil and Mars appears to be better off than

Essay On Planet X And Aliens
The age–old question of whether we are alone in the universe has tormented mankind probably even before we first recognized stars as distant suns.
This question has provoked theories and explanations on the existence of aliens that are as numerous as they are different. From movies to books, the
idea of aliens features heavily throughout our recent history. However, many people dismiss the idea that aliens could exist despite the substantial
evidence that has since come up. And what about Planet X?
This planet, also called Nibiru, has become a very controversial topic these days. Planet X is a large planet (much bigger than our earth) believed to
eventually bring an end to the world as we know it. According to the Nibiru Cataclysm doomsday scenario, Planet X will either collide with Earth
directly or pass very close to our planet. Both scenarios result in horrific destruction. Incidentally, this event will happen in the early 21st century. Nancy
Lieder first put forward this idea in 1995, and it has since intermittently gained traction through the years.
People have been quick to write off both Planet X and aliens as ludicrous conspiracy theories, but is that really the case? The truth is, there are various
facts that could prove the existence of both. Here are seven of them.

Personal Narrative: Out Of The Silent Planet
I think that my family realized that I had crossed the threshold between childhoods when I began to form my own opinions. This first took hold
when I took part in poverty stimulation at my local shelter. I was giving a character and a story behind the card I was given; the story made me
become emotionally attached to this name I had been assigned and the family in which I came from. The experience made me question the
prejudice of the society I was living in. How many times had I avoided eye contact with the people on the side of the road begging for money? I
began a long journey of soul searching and questioning the beliefs my parents had raised me on. My thoughts were continually brought back to a book
by C.S Lewis, it was called Out of the Silent Planet; a character named Weston believed that individual human lives don't matter, they must be sacrificed
to save mankind.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My mind was filled with pros and cons of both views but I had to decide which view I agreed with. In the end, I found that every person I encounter
has a story filled with struggles, love, defeat, and victories. It is easier to see people at surface level, as just a breathing empty shell that we avoid
conversing with in fear of becoming vulnerable or attached, but there is beauty in every soul if only we take the time to break down walls built of
heartache and fears. My parents are Westons and I am a Ransom, and although we don't believe the same things I can see the pride in their eyes
when I decided to embark on a quest to find mu own opinion and belief. Personally I believe that growing up is learning to question the opinions and
beliefs of others before you except them as your own. In my case, my family recognized my transformation as began to give me greater responsibility,
as I became the independent person I am

The islands are quite beautiful, the clouds are purple and the sky is a golden color, the seawater is green and drinkable, from the distance the water
looks like glided glass. The islands are not very stable, and they can shake if water hits the mobile islands. All of the islands are mobile, except the
main island, which remains stationary. Maledil, the people's god, forbade them to spend the night on the main island; therefore the inhabitants of

Weston is an immoral man who does not believe in organized religion, especially Christianity. Weston believes that he is guided by a supernatural
force, that force is really a demon that is corrupting him with false ideas. Weston is convinced by the demon that Weston is God and the universe.
Weston makes the mistake of calling the life force to him, when he does this; he becomes possessed by the demon. While Ransom is the noble
hero and Weston is the deranged villain, the role of "damsel in distress" falls upon Lady, the creation of Maledill. Lady's name remains unknown
until the end of the story, her name is Tinidill and she considers herself the queen of Perelandra. Lady is much like a child, because she does not
understand evil and the corrupt ways of Weston. She does not understand fear, death, rebellion, murder, pain or peace. When Ransom's knee
begins to bleed due to a fall, Lady wants him to explain why his knee is bleeding and wants to make her knee bleed as well. Maledill tells Lady that
she may not make her knee bleed and she stops asking. Lady has allowed herself to fall under Maledill's authority and believes that he will make
her wiser as each day passes, she only knows what Maledill allows her to know and experience. Lady depends on Ransom and Weston to make her
wiser in the ways of mankind. Summary of the Story The beginning of Perelandra starts out when Oysara asks Ransom to go to the planet Perelandra to

Analysis Of Ransom's Out Of The Silent Planet
The book out of the silent planet follows the journey of Ransom, a linguist that is kidnapped and put in a spaceship to be taken to Malacandra (Mars)
as a sacrifice to the Sorn, however he managed to escape from his kidnappers during the handover to the Sorn. While he is on the run on Malacandra
Ransom learns of the three races that show how human history has developed from primal to industrial and finally to modern day. The first part of
human history that Ransom encounters is the Hross who are as told by Ransom "Huge seal–like creature...glossy coat, liquid eye, sweet breath and
whitest teeth–and added to all these, as though paradise had never been lost and earliest dreams were true, the charm of speech and reason". (Lewis,
59) The Hross are seen by ransom as "old stone age" (67) and primitive with a very basic way of life, they sleep on the ground and use basic
everyday things for heat and food. Hross are known for the arts, mainly poetry and dance the other races look towards them for these things and
believe they are not good enough to compare to the Hross. The Hross also don't wear and cloths while the other races do, this connects to how primitive
humans didn't wear much clothing either. When they are compared to primitive humans they similarities are very evident, Humans used to sleep on ...

The Theme Of Fear In C. S Lewis Out Of The Silent Planet
In the book Out of the Silent Planet, by C.S Lewis, the theme presented is that man's pride, greed, and fear can blind him to the beauty and goodness
that God has created. When Weston and Devine first arrive on Malacandra, their fear causes problems right away. They are blinded to Malacandra's
beauty, instead focused on how terrifying everything is because it is different. They misinterpret the intentions of the inhabitants, which are so different
from their own, and kidnap Ransom to appease what they have assumed are hostile, sacrifice–demanding monsters. Their fear also prevents them from
experiencing the wonders God has bestowed upon Malacandra, something that Ransom is fortunate enough to participate in because he is able to

During his escape into the wilds of Mars, Ransom makes contact with one of the Malacandrian species. It is when Ransom meets Hyoi that his fear
slowly begins to melt away, and his natural curiosity and desire to learn about the universe come forth. His mind, not polluted with greedy thoughts
and crippling fear like Weston and Devine, is able to recognize intelligence in the eyes of the creature despite its strange appearance. His curiosity
overcomes his fear, and after the two meet the creature kindly gives him nourishment and encourages him to get in a boat with it. This moment is
poignant, showing that Malacandrians are not animals but a form of life created by God, intelligent and different from humans. This is something
Weston and Devine are never able to experience, because their fear blinds them from seeing anything else but unintelligent monsters. From this point,
Ransom is immersed in the Hross culture, learning much about the species and Malacandra itself that would never have been known to him had he
not overcome his fear. He is amazed by their way of life, and it causes him to reconsider the attitudes held by

Ransom's Virtue In Out Of The Silent Planet
According the Merriam Webster dictionary the definition of virtue is: conformity to a standard of right. So according to this definition, avoiding
evil is not sufficient enough to make one virtuous. In the book Out of the Silent Planet it seems that Ransom doesn't try to avoid evil, but at the
same time he doesn't try to go towards evil. However, you can tell that according to the definition of virtue, Ransom is indeed virtuous. Now it may
not seem like that Ransom is in fact virtuous, but he is as he is a very moral person. When he hears a commotion coming for a large estate he
sneaks in through a hedge and sees Dr. Weston and Mr. Devine struggling to capture a young boy, Ransom unclear of why they were trying to capture
the boy he was able to convince them to let the boy go home. After this incident he goes to Weston's house for a drink. The drink ends up being

On First Looking Into Chapman's Homer
General Comments Keats was so moved by the power and aliveness of Chapman's translation of Homer that he wrote this sonnet––after spending all
night reading Homer with a friend. The poem expresses the intensity of Keats's experience; it also reveals how passionately he cared about poetry. To
communicate how profoundly the revelation of Homer's genius affected him, Keats uses imagery of exploration and discovery. In a sense, the reading
experience itself becomes a Homeric voyage, both for the poet and the reader. Written in October 1816, this is the first entirely successful (surviving)
poem he wrote. John Middleton Murry called it "one of the finest sonnets in the English language."

What are your assocations with the words "pure" and "serene"–– positive, negative, neutral? Note that these words apply to both the poetry of Homer
and the translation by Chapman.
Till I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold; The Sestet (lines 9–14)
Then felt I like some watcher of the skies
"Then" moves the poem to a new idea, to the consequences or the results of reading Chapman's translation. At the same time, "then" connects the sestet
to the octet and so provides a smooth transition from one section of the poem to the other. In this line and the next line, reading Chapman's translation
has revealed a new dimension or world to Keats, which he expresses by extending the world to include the heavens. When a new planet swims into his
ken;
To get a sense of Keats' excitement and joy at the discovery of Homer via Chapman, imagine the moment of looking up into the sky and seeing a
planet––which has been unknown till that moment. Also imagine the moment of struggling up a mountain, reaching the top and beholding––not land,
as you expected––but an expanse of ocean, reaching to the horizon and beyond. What would that moment of discovery, that moment of revelation of a
new world, that moment of enlarging the world you knew, feel like? The planet "swims" into view. Though the astronomer is actively looking (as
Keats actively read), yet the planet, which has always been there, comes into

How To Read Literature Like A Professor Analysis
In How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster outlines for his readers many techniques that authors often use to emphasize themes,
patterns, and character relationships. C.S. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet is a prime example of these techniques. The novel follows Dr. Elwin
Ransom as he is captured by a greedy old schoolmate and a mad physicist before he unwillingly begins a space expedition to the planet of Malacandra,
or Mars. After a series of events, Ransom finds himself alone and must begin to learn the language and history of the planet and its inhabitants, the
hrossa, the sorns, and the pfifltrigg. Within the book, many of the techniques Foster mentioned were present and played a strong role in understanding

Christianity became ever present in his works after he returned to the Christian faith. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet is not exempt from this, as the novel
is filled with small biblical themes. Foster himself, in Chapter Six, wrote that "biblical stories hold power of accumulated myth" even if they are
not used in a biblical sense (56). The most powerful biblical theme that was present in the novel came from the basis of the Holy Trinity: father,
son, and the holy spirit. In the text these three are renamed as Maleldil, The Old One, and Oyarsa. Maleldil and God (father) created the worlds
while Oyarsa and Jesus (son) returned to the worlds to maintain order. The Old One and the Holy Spirit are more of a presence, or spirit, in the
world and with Maleldil. Many other biblical figures can be found in the novel. The Bent One, can easily be considered a stand in for Satan. Just as
Satan was once an angel, The Bent One was once like Oyarsa. In addition to the more obvious character choices, there were a few smaller word
choices that could lead one to a Christianity based theory. In Malacandrian, the language of Malacandra, they have no word for 'bad' as it is replaced
with 'bent', with the possibility to be fixed. This seemed to be connected to the idea of forgiveness, a staple in the Christian faith found throughout the
Bible. It was through the use of biblical themes that Lewis

In the story "Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis, Ransom, a physiology professor at Oxford University is kidnapped by two men who take him
in a spaceship to Mars, or Malacandra as they call it. They plan on giving him over to the martians who live on Malacandra but Ransom runs away
in fear he will be killed. As the story progresses, Ransom meets all sorts of martians and becomes immersed in the culture and language of this
planet. Ransom is then faced with being called to meet a certain spirit of the planet and makes a small journey in search of this being. Through his
experiences on Malacandra, Ransom grows in courage, shows his curiosity and exceptional intelligence. Throughout the story one sees Ransom
grow in courage. When he is kidnapped by Devine and Weston, Ransom loses the fear that they might harm him and tries to escape from his
captors when Devine and Weston think he is asleep. He is however, unable to get away. Throughout their journey to Malacandra Ransom loses a bit
of his confidence and courage and does not try to fight Devine or Weston's wishes. However, upon arriving at the planet Ransom realizes he is going

Silent Spring Vs Nobel Speech: Environmental Impacts

  • 1. Silent Spring Vs Nobel Speech In this unit it talks about if people have effects on the environment and they gave us some stories about it. Are the needs of people ever more important than the needs of animals and the planet? I think the people's needs are more important than the needs of the animal's and the planet because it states in the "Nobel Speech" and "Silent Spring". To begin, as it states in the "Nobel Speech" Al Gore says that we need to save us fromclimate change. In the "Nobel Speech" Al Gore the U.S vice president won an award and he gave a speech. He will talk about how we change the climate change and then there might be some problems in the future like the ice caps. Next, in "Silent Spring" the author says that the human needs are better than the animals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Silent Spring, By Rachel Carson An activist is defined as someone who crusades for some kind of societal change. To be considered an effective activist, the individual would need to influence a transformation in the world, causing a change and reshaping a perception. Rachel Carson, best known as the author of Silent Spring, is said to be one of the most influential women in environmental history, according to her fellow authors and conservationists. Carson has been recognized worldwide in history and science books for her campaign against DDT, her work as a conservationist, and her efforts to change society's view of the planet. In Silent Spring Ms. Carson brought the adverse effects of a toxic commonly, used pesticide to the forefront of the environmental movement. DDT was being used commercially to treat crops and was destroying the surrounding ecosystem (Carson). She published her findings from experiments she conducted in the early 1950s in Silent Spring. However, it was not an easy piece to have published, especially not in the 1950s. Carson's work challenged mainstream thought and went on to change it, even in a time when women were not particularly powerful or respected. Many criticized Carson for her challenging ideas and her outspokenness, but in 1962, her battle to be published was made a triumph. The book led to a presidential commission by John F. Kennedy. Through Carson's publication, the danger of the use of DDT was realized and later banned in the United States. Without the work of Rachel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of Out Of The Silent Planet By C. S. Lewis Virtue is a quality that one possesses. But how can virtue be attained? Does someone simply decide they want to be virtuous? The question I am focusing on is as follows: Is avoiding evil sufficient to make one virtuous or must virtue be an active choice? Upon hearing this question I immediately thought "of course just avoiding evil alone doesn't make one virtuous", but as I began to think more deeply about the question and to analyze examples from "Out Of The Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis, it started to change what I thought. I do think that virtue is an active choice, however I also think avoiding evil is active choice. Avoiding evil does make one virtuous, but requires an active choice. They can't live without out one another. A reason ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of The Book ' The Martian Chronicles ' Andy Tsai 9/26/15 Period 1 Major Works Data Sheet Title of the Work: The Martian Chronicles Author: Ray Bradbury Date of Publication: 1950 Genre: Novel Historical Information: The novel had taken place on the planet Mars. During the 1700s, telescopes were beginning to get popular, and more common used by astrologists to observer planets, such as mars. People from Earth believed that all the planets were inhabited by intelligent living things like humans. In the 1800's people were certain there was intelligent life on Mars because Schiaparelli, an astronomer who was studying the surface of mars, called them "canali". People had misinterpreted this and thought there were intelligent life forms living on Mars, smart enough to make a system of canals. Plot Summary: A female Martian begins to dream about people that were different from them. These people from her dream land on the planet Mars but die shortly after they landed on the red planet. On the second expedition, the captain and his crew explored around Mars and discovers houses and towns, but all they wanted was to get a little bit of fame and recognition for traveling from the third planet to the fourth. Due to bragging about it, the Martians thought they've gone insane and they're hallucinating others to trying to believe them. The psychologist concludes that they've gone insane and shoots the captain and his crewmates, but thinks they've transferred their insanity to him, so he kills himself as well. On the third ... NASA SILENT ABOUT BLUE LAKE ONMARS According to a new Google Maps image of mars, UFO Channel thridphaseofthemoon has pointed out a blue lake on the surface of the red planet. NASA has not made any formal statement regarding the lake. Perhaps they are trying to hide the presence of alien life on the planet or perhaps this sighting is simply a mistake. • 6. Biological Pesticides In Silent Spring By Rachel Carson Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring, a book that is often viewed as a landmark work of environmental writing, was the result of several different events that caused her to pay attention to the results of the use of different pesticides to control insect populations in America following World War II. In her book she discusses the different kinds of chemicals our governments have been using and the damage they have all been proven to be causing to the environment, animals, and of course, humans. She provided evidence towards the correlation of cancer cases in combination with these chemicals, and advocated for the possibility of biological pest control. In Silent Spring, Carson attacks pesticides and notes their effects on the world's ecosystems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though, at the time of writing Silent Spring, synthetic pesticides had only been distributed for twenty years, they had already saturated the human, plant, and animal worlds. From Carson's perspective, these death–dealing materials of insecticides are marketed cheerfully to consumers, without traditional poison warnings (174). In fact, only 15 out of 100 people even read the labels for the chemical products they buy (177). They destroy enzymes, enzymes that are specifically there to protect the body. They also block oxidation, thus blocking the body's ability to receive energy which can make organs malfunction. Worst of all, these pesticides have all scientifically been linked to certain types of cancers and tumors. Because of the unpredictable, hard to see, and delayed effects of absorbing small amounts of pesticides over time, it becomes easy to ignore the problem. Humans seem programmed to shrug off disasters in the distant future, concerned only with those effects that can be seen immediately. Carson argues that the mass amount of unawareness of the true danger potential of these chemicals is the reason why many people are getting sick, simply because they don't know what's hurting them. When pesticides and other chemicals meant for food and cleaning products are deemed as "safe", the vast majority of people are going to believe so, therefore continue using ... • 7. Pest Control In Silent Spring Rachel Carson's Silent Spring is still today as controversial, groundbreaking, and relevant as it was when it was first published in 1962. The book argues that uncontrolled and unexamined pesticide use harms and even kills not only animals, but humans too. Carson documents the negative effects of pesticides on the environment. The text includes strong accusations against the chemical industry and a call to look at how the use of chemicals can cause damage and impact the world around us. The book's intended audience is the general public because Carson wants to bring the problem of harmful pesticide use to everyone's attention. She also successfully demonstrates the fragility of the biodiversity on the planet and emphasizes how chemical use can have large repercussions. "How could intelligent beings seek to control a few unwanted species by a method that contaminated the entire environment and brought the threat of disease and death event to their own kind?"(8) Rachel Carson's question, asked in Silent Spring, requires the reader to take stock in the conditions under which Americans at the time were dealing with pest control. The title, Silent Spring, comes from the silence in many forests and meadows due to the poisoning of songbirds, insects and other invertebrates, and even plants. This now historical account of the use of pesticides has raised America's awareness of the dangers of agricultural chemicals that had become commonly accepted during this time. Since ... • 8. Summary Of Out Of The Silent Planet "Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis portrays elements of Christianity by asking the question: "What would a planet that never experienced sin or its effects look like?" He asks this question by telling the story of a man named Ransom, who finds himself abducted on a mysterious planet called Malacandra. Here, Ransom is astonished by the ways of the native species of Malacandra, to which sin is a foreign idea. Only when humans inhabited Malacandra did corruption enter the planet. Lewis succeeds in creating an image of a world without sin, making readers to see Christianity from a different perspective. Out of the Silent Planet begins by embarking us on the adventures of the philologist Dr. Ransom, who is plucked from humanity by physicist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Effective Use Of Pesticides In Rachel Carson's Silent... In her revolutionary masterpiece, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson brilliantly and elegantly works to inform the public on the risks of carelessly using pesticides and insecticides as a sort of panacea for all pests and annoyances, and works to shed light on the damage that had already been done at the point of the book's publication in 1962. As discussed in the book's introduction by Al Gore, at the time of writing, Rachel Carson was enduring intense medical radiation and died, two years after publishing the book, of breast cancer – which has been found to be linked to toxic chemicals possibly coming from insecticides. That being said, Al Gore notes, " In a sense, Carson was literally writing for her life," but she was also writing, "against the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though Rachel Carson was not the first to bring up such issues of insecticides – beekeepers and ornithologists had already been filing insecticide related lawsuits in the 1950s – , she was the first to bring it to the attention of the general population, which in my opinion is one of the most important steps an environmentalist can take. It would be unreasonable for Carson to believe that she could singlehandedly stop the use of insecticides and automatically make the world a safe and poison free place, but by bringing such issues to the public eye, she was able to ignite something within the people which would then spread from person to person, state to state, and eventually to government officials who have the power to permanently make a change. Furthermore, though this may not have been her intention, the effects that Silent Spring had on our world and society as a whole expands exponentially farther than the single subject of insecticides. In the book's introduction, Al Gore eloquently notes that Carson, "brought us back to a fundamental idea lost to an amazing degree in modern civilization : the interconnection of human beings and the natural environment." And, today, though our world still faces many environmental issues and there are still many who do not believe in the importance or even existence of such issues, the use of such insecticides discussed in ... We step out of our solar system into theuniverse seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate. We know full well that our planet and all its inhabitants are but a small part of the immense universe that surrounds us and it is with humility and hope that we take this step." –– Former Secretary–General Kurt Waldheim, 1977 The day European stepped on African continent and began enslaving the black Africans was doomed to be one of the most disgraceful days in the history of mankind. When they were sold as tools, nobody considered them as our fellow humans. It was their poverty and backwardness that made them unable to fight against. So far as we can see, similar tragedies happened again and again throughout the history of humanity. In the final analysis, the reason is that we human beings lack a sense of sympathy towards aliens, especially when they are much weaker than us. So do extraterrestrials, who might be mush stronger than us. • 11. Character Analysis Of Out Of The Silent Planet Personality is something that can be defined as "the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character"( English, Oxford Dictionaries). In the book "Out of the Silent Planet" written by C.S Lewis you are able to see how the main characters Weston, Ransom and Divine each contribute their own personalities and viewpoints to the story. Since their philosophies are vastly different from one another this takes a effect of the story. The characters of the novel "Out of the Silent planet" not only affect how decisions are made but also the effect their attitudes create when interactions take place in the book. Ransom as being a main character in the story has a very distinctive characteristic. This all begins with learning that Ransom is philologist from Cambridge University that is seeking a adventure by taking his walking journey. With being a philologist this influences his personality by him not only having a eagerness to learn but also with the drive to want to know the unknown. However this takes a tole on him in the beginning of the story when he is living in fear while on his journey to malacandra but as well as while he is there. A article relating to the explanation of Ransoms character says "Sometimes his emotions are tied to specific objects; at other times "he did not even know what he was afraid of: the fear itself possessed his whole mind, a formless, infinite misgiving""(Schwartz, Sanford). This quote explains and shows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Silent Planet By. Lewis And The Three Stigmata Of... Humanity has always maintained a strong bond between thought and action. It is through our ethical and moral beliefs that we reinforce our mentality on life. In both Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Phillip K. Dick, the protagonists and the story interact in a similar fashion. These novels portray many fundamental religious theories that directly mesh with human values. Characterized by their subjective actions, the main characters in these novels are motivated most strongly by the mythic dimension of the sacred, which reveals human inclination to think rationally about humanity's past. Mike Alsford created four categories that identify a human being. Human as a subject is the category that most pertain to both novels. This stresses the ability to think rationally about one's self and ideologies that stem from human characteristics. The personalities in both novels implement a great amount of thought about their predicament and their moral values. Through such thought, a religious context is existent from both stories, as the main characters in both are faced with a presumed "higher power," supernatural force that has a vast control on the everyday life of humanity. Human as a subject will be applied throughout the analysis of both stories. It will be used to address the notion of one's ability to interpret the underlying religious themes in each story. Thought provokes human identity and it is essential to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. What Is The Mood Of Silent Spring By Rachel Carson Silent Spring Rachel Carson was an environmental advocate who believed that us humans, are responsible for the Earth and how it will turn out in future years. She showed the readers of Silent Spring a very vivid image of an idyllic planet. She also showed an even more vivid image of the planet in a type of "void". Rachel Carson uses imagery, contrast and, inductive reasoning to get her message across. Starting with the imagery that was used throughout the passage. In the first two paragraphs Carson used very vivid, colorful words like, "In autumn, oak and maple and birch set up a blaze of color that flamed and flickered across a backdrop of pines." (1). Out Of The Silent Planet Hero's Journey In the postmodern period of films, film–makers are constantly pushing the boundaries of genre definitions, as well as putting different genres into various new combinations. One such combination is the "fantasy–adventure" genre; This genre can be defined as narratives in which an otherworldly figure or situation interrupts the human real world or a human is a part of an otherworldly lifestyle. Within these parameters, the protagonist must overcome obstacles in a world full of physical and moral peril and accomplish a critical mission in order to save the society from whence they came. In Star Wars, the various non–human creatures seen during the first trilogy visually embody the theme of good vs. evil. All of the evil characters looked evil in appearance, including DV, Jabba the Hutt, and the emperor. Lewis, who is the author of "Out of the Silent Planet", is a man who was well educated in his religious faith of Christianity. A common theme in his works is based on his support for the Christian world of religion and teaching. C.S. was known for his writings of fiction as seen through the work of "Out of the Silent Planet" when the solar system of planets are renamed as something else and a man journeys through many unknown species and areas of land. Dr. Ransom communicates to these creatures that he must go and speak to "Oyarsa" at "Meldilorn", which is taken over by Malacandrians. After close examination, Dr. Ransom concludes that the planet he is on is actually the real planet, Mars. Because "Oyarsa" is not a physical being, it is not visible to the human eye but can be heard. While "Oyarsa" summoned not only Dr. Ransom but also Devine and Weston were also summoned. The three men were all tempted because assumptions concluded that Devine was going to steal gold from Malacandra and bring it back to planet Earth and Weston was going to take over planet Mars. "Oyarsa" plays around with Dr. Ransom for a longer period of time to see if he becomes tempted like Devine and Weston were. Dr. Ransom was told that an animal like a version of "Oyarsa" existed at one time and was in control of the planet Earth, which was called "Thulcandra", which in translation meant "noiseless planet" but no communication has been received that this creature was still in control of it or not. • 17. Lewis And The Silent Planet Olivia Seeney Dr. Michael Elam ENGL 475 10/4/16 C.S. Lewis and the Influence of Dante in Out of the Silent Planet All throughout Lewis novels there is evidence that clearly connects the themes and symbolism from other aspects of traditional Christian literature both during and before he began writing. One of the most distinct examples of this occurring within Lewis' works is the influence that Dante had on the concepts that he reflects on while conveying thoughts to his readers. This is specifically more notable a connection between Dante and Lewis when you examine the parallels that take place within Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet and Dante's Inferno. The literary tradition left behind by Dante is both one able to influence the thoughts of others and to teach the value of Christianity through within a fictional environment. This is similar to Lewis' Space Trilogy in more ways than one, some of which include Ransom journey in place of the pilgrim as he travels through strange, new, territory in order to reach his goal, and the use of Malacandra to represent the levels of Hell. Each book in the Space Trilogy continues to expand on the possible influence that Dante may have had on Lewis while he wrote these books and aims to show Christians the truth behind the Dante's thoughts through the use of science fiction. Many elements found within Dante's Inferno are reintroduced through new ideas by Lewis within Out of the Silent Planet in order to convey Christian thoughts and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Golding uses the characters from Lord of the Flies just as Shakespeare did to prove that man is turned to evil. The narrative illustrates a story about a group of British boys who get stranded on a deserted island without any adults. This lack of a stable society and presence of leadership forces the boys to create their own, and this works for the boys for a while. The boys turn themselves into savages and begin to do evil deeds which continue to get worse until they are rescued. In the time between their rescue, the society the boys create devolves and turns them into savages although this was not always the case. When the boys first arrived, Ralph, the fair haired boy, attempts to lead them in a civilized manner, but through the influence of Jack, many of the boys become evil. Jack mutants against Ralph saying, " I'm not going to be a part of Ralph lot... I'm going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too," (Golding 127) in saying this Jack has made most of the boys on the island betray their leader which proves both Jack and his followers to be evil. The society the boys created glorifies violence and death:"... the boys... found themselves eager to take part in this demented... society." (Golding 152). • 19. Rachel Carson Silent Spring Quote Chase kaltner The world is being sickened by the needs of man in today's society. People, love to live in luxury without knowing the consequences of their actions. This is because man lives at a pace set by himself, and not one that is naturally set by nature. This is shown excellently in a quote inside of the novel Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. The Quote states, "the rapidity of change and the speed with which new situations are created follow the impetuous and heedless pace of man rather than the deliberate pace of nature." The Earth is experiencing such rapid and disastrous change due to the wants of man. "So to the potentially dangerous dangerous fumes from gasoline are to the finely divided particles of whatever insecticide the probably unsuspecting suburbanite has chosen to distribute, raising the level of air pollution above his own grounds to something few cities could equal" (177). This is an excellent example of humans ecological footprint. We as humans have many things that operate on many non renewable resources that are leaving a harmful effect on the environment. This is done by the use of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels such as gasoline are burned they produce co2. This is very harmful because the co2 becomes trapped in the atmosphere. This thickens the atmosphere in a sense, and does not allow heat to escape as easily. This is what is thought to be causing global warming, and could lead to some disastrous changes. This includes rising sea levels, heating of the surface of the ocean, possible changes in ocean circulation, possible effects on the habitats of animals, etc. All of this is due to us burning fossil fuels so it would be known as our ecological ... • 20. Virtue In Ransom's Out Of The Silent Planet "Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it." – David Starr Jordan Virtue is defined as "moral excellence; goodness; righteousness" (dictionary.com) and is an active choice. In the book Out of the Silent Planet, Ransom, a wandering traveler, proved it throughout the book. In particular, there are three times where he made a choice that either demonstrated virtue or immorality. The first was at the beginning of the book when he found the boy at the professor's house; The second was when he lied about Earth, and the third was when he obeyed Oysara's instruction to return to Earth. The first example of virtue being an active choice was when Ransom found the boy at the professor's house. Although he would rather travel straight to the next town, Ransom agreed to send home a boy to his anxious mother. By going under the hedge, Ransom trespassed, risking the wrath of the owners. Ransom and the two other humans risked suffocation before landing on Earth. Despite the danger, Ransom submitted to Oysara's authority. Romans 13:1–2 declares. His first impression was a bright, pale world – a water–coloured world out of a child's paint box." Lewis also has a gift for making strong points in his novel without making the reader feel guilty, because he uses such human characters that are filled with normal and relatable flaws. Even with the main character's name, Ransom he sends a message, because as you read this book, you will see how his name comes to play. This book is very involved and it's not a book to be taken lightly. This is a book with a lot of inner meaning. Ittalks about the dark side of humanity. This is different to what happens on earth where groups are in constant dominance wars, often breaking into factions that regard each other as inherently inferior. The pfifltriggi excavate and makes things out of their excavation, the Seroni are the master of knowledge and the hrossa were poets (Lewis, 68). Even with these different talents, there is no group that wants to dominate the other. They know that they have differences but have accepted them since "they can talk to each other, they can cooperate, and they have the same ethics" (Lewis 156). The leadership system on earth is also different from the other planets. Unlike the earth, all the other planets have a structured leadership; they have a ruler (Oyarsa). The earth is unruly because people have no common Oyarsa and this makes people bent. Everyone on earth wants to be a little Oyarsa himself (Lewis 102). • 25. Summary Of C. S. Lewis Out Of The Silent Planet People across the globe have been afraid of extraterrestrial beings for centuries. Most of these fears are brought about by the thought that any being that is more technologically advanced will inevitably want to bring destruction to all humans. Many people think this due to the history of human beings that shows those who come up with a better technology use that as power to be wielded against others. C.S. Lewis in Out of the Silent Planet shows that humans tend to fear the possible power of beings that are different and are technologically advanced. His characters show continuously the views that humans have for new or different beings. He constantly gives examples throughout the book of the ways humans look at, down at or up to, creatures of different levels of intelligence and of different appearances. The three species of "aliens" in this book give a good example of how well a society could work together if they looked at their differences as ways to help each other, rather than looking at them as a way to differ between higher and lower class. The creatures disregard appearance and intelligence and show just how little those characteristics matter in the total scheme of things. • 26. Out Of The Silent Planet Analysis Individuality on Malacandra and on Earth In Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis, there are many different species of beings that all live on Malacandra and are able to get along with each other, whereas on Earth, humans are always trying to be better than everyone else at all that we do. Due to this drastic change in the way of living, the beings of Malacandra seem to have a perception that differs greatly from that of the humans on Earth. Thus life on Malacandra is better than life on Earth because those on Malacandra celebrate individual abilities and those on Earth are pressured to be good at just about everything. On Malacandra, the three species– Hrossa, Seroni and Pfifltriggi, all seem to have a certain level or respect for each other.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each of these three species are able to accept the others and often help each other when there is need simply because they ask for something. Hyoi explains when stating, "If the other hnau wanted food, why should we not give it to them? We often do" (Lewis 73). This shows that the differing species have learned how to live together, accept each other, and learn to share their resources for the betterment of the other species. Due to those on Malacandra being able to put aside their differences and accept the individuality that is exemplified by the different species, they are able to live a very good life in which needs of others are satisfied by those who can help. This idea of helping others who are different than ourselves is one of the key reasons why those on Malacandra live a better life than those on Earth who are unable for the most part to put aside our differences in order to help those among us in need. Instead of helping others when needed, those on Earth tend to go to war over resources that, if shared willingly could be used to help better all cultures involved. However, many people dismiss the idea that aliens could exist despite the substantial evidence that has since come up. And what about Planet X? This planet, also called Nibiru, has become a very controversial topic these days. Planet X is a large planet (much bigger than our earth) believed to eventually bring an end to the world as we know it. According to the Nibiru Cataclysm doomsday scenario, Planet X will either collide with Earth directly or pass very close to our planet. Both scenarios result in horrific destruction. The poem expresses the intensity of Keats's experience; it also reveals how passionately he cared about poetry. To communicate how profoundly the revelation of Homer's genius affected him, Keats uses imagery of exploration and discovery. In a sense, the reading experience itself becomes a Homeric voyage, both for the poet and the reader. Written in October 1816, this is the first entirely successful (surviving) poem he wrote. John Middleton Murry called it "one of the finest sonnets in the English language." Definitions and Allusions The lines of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What are your assocations with the words "pure" and "serene"–– positive, negative, neutral? Note that these words apply to both the poetry of Homer and the translation by Chapman. Till I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold; The Sestet (lines 9–14) Then felt I like some watcher of the skies "Then" moves the poem to a new idea, to the consequences or the results of reading Chapman's translation. At the same time, "then" connects the sestet to the octet and so provides a smooth transition from one section of the poem to the other. In this line and the next line, reading Chapman's translation has revealed a new dimension or world to Keats, which he expresses by extending the world to include the heavens. When a new planet swims into his ken; To get a sense of Keats' excitement and joy at the discovery of Homer via Chapman, imagine the moment of looking up into the sky and seeing a planet––which has been unknown till that moment. Also imagine the moment of struggling up a mountain, reaching the top and beholding––not land, as you expected––but an expanse of ocean, reaching to the horizon and beyond. What would that moment of discovery, that moment of revelation of a new world, that moment of enlarging the world you knew, feel like? The planet "swims" into view. • 39. How To Read Literature Like A Professor Analysis In How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster outlines for his readers many techniques that authors often use to emphasize themes, patterns, and character relationships. C.S. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet is a prime example of these techniques. The novel follows Dr. Elwin Ransom as he is captured by a greedy old schoolmate and a mad physicist before he unwillingly begins a space expedition to the planet of Malacandra, or Mars. After a series of events, Ransom finds himself alone and must begin to learn the language and history of the planet and its inhabitants, the hrossa, the sorns, and the pfifltrigg. Within the book, many of the techniques Foster mentioned were present and played a strong role in understanding the story... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christianity became ever present in his works after he returned to the Christian faith. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet is not exempt from this, as the novel is filled with small biblical themes. Foster himself, in Chapter Six, wrote that "biblical stories hold power of accumulated myth" even if they are not used in a biblical sense (56). The most powerful biblical theme that was present in the novel came from the basis of the Holy Trinity: father, son, and the holy spirit. In the text these three are renamed as Maleldil, The Old One, and Oyarsa. Maleldil and God (father) created the worlds while Oyarsa and Jesus (son) returned to the worlds to maintain order. The Old One and the Holy Spirit are more of a presence, or spirit, in the world and with Maleldil. Many other biblical figures can be found in the novel. The Bent One, can easily be considered a stand in for Satan. Just as Satan was once an angel, The Bent One was once like Oyarsa. In addition to the more obvious character choices, there were a few smaller word choices that could lead one to a Christianity based theory. In Malacandrian, the language of Malacandra, they have no word for 'bad' as it is replaced with 'bent', with the possibility to be fixed. This seemed to be connected to the idea of forgiveness, a staple in the Christian faith found throughout the Bible. It was through the use of biblical themes that Lewis ...
