later became an atheist. Marx attended University of Bonn, but due to his imprisonment for
drunkenness and variances with another student, he was enrolled in the University of Berlin by his
parents. Marx earned his degree in philosophy and began writing for Rheinische Zeitung, a liberal
democratic newspaper. He later became their editor. Marx was a member of Young Hegelian
movement which was group that criticized Christianity and the liberal resistance of the Prussian
autocracy. Marx engaged in numerous revolutionary movements; However, after the failures he was
driven to London in 1849. For most of his life, Marx was not working alone. Marx worked with
Friedrich Engels, who had created a similar theory to that of Marx. Engel was a great communicator
while Marx was the great philosopher. The two worked well together to formulate the term,
"Marxism". Engel contributed much to Marxism and Karl Marx's other successes. Marx
continuously studied and wrote, but he was unable to finish the last two volumes of his work.

production of goods into a cooperative agreement where no one has more than anyone else. Its goal
was meant to reduce suffering by allowing the public control of industry and social services. It does

Abstract. In these questions I will analyze the characters while focusing on how the events in 1984
have made them who they are. I will also discuss the types of conditioning in the book and give
examples of the conditioning. Then I will talk about some of the laws or regulations in the world
today that I find to be not–constitutional. Finally I will define progressicism, socialism, communism
and Marxism, and who founded them.
1. The characters in 1984 are trained to be collectivists because they stride for social harmony and
the satisfaction in life is based on the success of the group as a whole. An example of this is
everyone jobs is to make sure that Oceania succeeds against East Asia. (Orwell)

However Winston and Julia are rebellious and stray from the norm. I do not think they have

In today's society, each and every one of use has a different view on what capitalism is and what
freedom is. As we went through this section we focused on different writing that covered capitalism
and freedom and the cultural view on each aspect. While all focused on these aspects they all had
their own view on what each was and what utopian society would be like for each and
everyone.From all of these documents we get a wider picture of what one person in one certain
culture views freedom versus what another culture views as freedom. Looking back onto the texts
that we have discussed the most prominent documents that we looked into that really spoke to the

Engels. All three works focus on capitalism and freedom but everyone has a different view of what

freedom is taken into account. WIthout focusing on the aspects of freedom such as Positive and
Negative Freedoms, it would not be possible to work as a society if we did not focus on the God–

government in my perspective couldn't agree on certain plans and regulations that ultimately lead to
the rise of the dictatorship under Hitler. This view on capitalism that is perceived in this text is one
that the United States has been slowly creeping toward but we have never felt it rapidly enough to
notice what is actually happening. As we slowly creep into the future, more regulations and more

The industrialization of cities, such as Berlin, greatly increased the price of living for the working
class. Because of this, children who were a cheap source of labor, were often times expected to work
daily for meager earnings. This process is exhibited in the engraving titled "Orphan Girls and Boys
in a Welfare Institution." The images are set in Germany in 1846 and display orphaned girls working
in a sewing factory and boys working in a textile factory. This depiction of boys and girls speaks
volumes about gender roles when it comes to social standing and job opportunities. In addition,
these images show a very idealized version of child labor and industrialization and argue that
children should be a source of cheap labor to reduce the cost of production and be separated based
on sex. Many other sources such as Dronke's "Excerpts from Berlin" and The Communist Manifesto

Marx believed the workers were not collecting the benefits of the Industrial Revolution. Marx says
that men are forced to work for natural survival. Marx also suggests that working men only have
time to engage in the basic animalistic tendencies of a quest for survival. He says that man becomes

his line of reasoning was that the workers were putting their jobs before their human needs. Marx
believed that the worker would become a slave of the machine that they operated every day. In his

As discussed in class, the late 1400s were where many economic conducts were controlled by
families, religion, tradition and political authority rather than by markets. The manufacturing of
goods was done using hand tools and machines in the comfort of households and in small farms.

Proletariat. The Bourgeoisie were the ruling and powerful class that had apparently gained that
power through several revolutions. The Bourgeoisie had apparently put a system in place which only

constantly expanding market, it establishes connections all over the globe...it 'creates a world in its

specific goal in mind; social equality. Karl Marx and Frederick Engel wanted to close the gap
between the ruling class and the working class. The working class were being overworked and
underpaid while working in factories. Marx and Engels wanted equality in the society by advocating
for a communist society, where all people have equal access to resources. W.E.B Du Bois wanted
African Americans to have the same equal rights as the white men. African Americans were
neglected in the American society and were not allowed the same rights as the white men.

manifesto was to advocate for the redistribution of resources as the most effective way of promoting

housing could be provided on an equal basis . During the period of industrial revolution disparity

Karl Marx, writer of Communist Manifesto along with Friedrich Engels, is represented as an old,
wise pig in George Orwell's Animal Farm. Because Orwell is a democratic socialist and does not
accept the ideologies of Marxism, he reveals the reality of communism and reflects his opinions
through sardonic situations that occur among animals. The state of communism that Marx and
Friedrich Engels describe is where the state is abolished, people live in a society where members
work together in agreement and no one is exploited, and every member shares the rewards of hard
work. The envisions of Marx greatly contrasted with the plot of Animal Farm. Old Major, a pig, had
a dream that mirrored Marx and his dream of communism. This "dream" was ironic because it
suggests that communism was only a dream and would never be obtained. The Soviet Union's
policies were seen as steps to reach communism, rather than the end result of communism, in which
all animals of the farm endured. The characters in Animal Farm had to pass through this in between
stage before becoming a complete communist society, and in reality they remained in this stage and
believed they were close to their goal.
The animals, who were the laborers, fulfilled Old Major's wish and overthrew the capitalistic men
with a revolution, much like how Marx and Engels hoped for the day the Proletariat would

Communist Manifesto, hereafter referred to as the CM, was published in London, 1848 and served
as the culmination of the collaboration between Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The CM was to
serve as the basis for the communist platform, a political system which, in Marx's and Engel's view,
served as the final destination in the natural progression of society. Marx attributed this progression
to the idea that "class struggle" served as the driving force in the history of all previous civilizations.
Marx recognized the distinction between the working class, or the Proletariat and the upper class, or
the Bourgeoisie was becoming increasingly clear with the industrial revolution noted as the inciting
event of the two new clashing classes. The CM was distributed among the German, communist
league and served as the parties platform explaining the main components of the economic theory.
The main idea of the CM was that history consisted of a clash between two factions, the elite ruling
class and the meek peasantry. Marx even explicitly cites several civilizations in the CM, which
demonstrate this class distinction: "In ancient Rome we have patricians, knights, plebeians, slaves;
in the Middle Ages, feudal lords, vassals, guild–masters, journeymen, apprentices, serfs". Yet, to
Marx the newly formed Bourgeoisie and Proletariat where the clearest example of a class struggle.
