Missing White Woman Syndrome Summary
The disappearance and death of Maylin has created an awareness of not only her disappearance, but
of many other Latina's who have gone missing. This article states that missing Latina's are not
getting the news coverage they deserve. It also talks about how white women are innocent victims in
disappearance scenarios, whereas black women and Latina's are involved in activities that in some
form lead to their kidnapping and death. This article explains how more news coverage on missing
women of color could make a difference in whether they are found alive or dead. This is something
that is true because the more the public is informed on missing people the more they will be able to
help out with these cases. This article is relevant to my topic because it will help support my claim
on the lack of news coverage of missing women of color. "Missing White Woman Syndrome" is
described as the extensive media coverage missing white females receive. In many cases these
missing women are rich, attractive, and young. This article states that there are missing children who
are non–white who do not get the media attention that white children get. A reason for this is
because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many times news coverage is slanted due to "framing." This is magnifying or minimizing coverage
based on such factors as a woman's youth, beauty, and occupation. Although there is an obvious
difference between media coverage on white females and females of color, it is not intentional. This
article states that the news does not equally present information on missing victims of color. Women
who are white often have their family members describe the person they were, but many times
women of color do not get this. This source will be helpful in writing my research essay on the
differences in reports of missing white women and

Battered Woman Syndrome Research Paper
Battered Woman Syndrome has been recognized as a subcategory of post–traumatic stress disorder
(Walker, 2009). All women who have been battered do not meet all of the criteria in the DSM–V for
post–traumatic stress disorder but many of them do (Walker, 2009). It is also important to note that
women who suffer from Battered Woman Syndrome may suffer from other mental health
conditions. Treatment should be tailored to fit the unique needs of the battered woman. However,
according to Walker (2009) treatment of post–traumatic stress disorder and Battered Woman
Syndrome may include a combination of feminist and trauma therapy. Feminist therapy helps the
victim understand the situational factors that are out of her control which may motivate her to accept
and change the factors that she can control (Walker, 2009). ... Show more content on

For example, suing an abuser for financial resources after filing for divorce may be an empowering
action in the midst of such stressful legal action (Walker, 2009). On the other hand, trauma therapy
helps the victim better understand her psychological symptoms that come from her exposure to
trauma (Walker, 2009).Distinctive trauma triggers include the memory of the abusers face, the sound
of his voice, and even the batterers scent during the abuse (Walker, 2009). The sensitivity to these
triggers can interfere with new relationships and many times never fully go away (Walker, 2009). It
is imperative to empower these victims of trauma to strive for change but it is equally important to
be able to explain how the abuse and fear triggers desperation in the victim as mental health
professionals. Documenting the clients comments about the abuse and the fear of her abuser may
help mental health professionals better understand Battered Woman's Syndrome (Walker,

History of present illness: 34–year–old woman with a history of Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome
complains of intermittent palpitations since 2005. She has had a 24–hour Holter, which was
unremarkable. She came in for a follow–up visit and had an EKG done that revealed the presence of
pre–excitation. The patient reports a daily sensation of palpitations that lasts for several minutes.
The patient reports lightheadedness with the palpitations without syncope. The patient underwent an
exercise treadmill evaluation, which showed no evidence of ischemia. The echocardiography
revealed a structurally normal heart. Delta waves were noted during evaluation but resolved at
higher heart rates. Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome (WPW) is a conduction disorder of the heart
that is caused by pre accessory pathway resulting in tachyarrhythmias. Kesler & Lahham (2016)
state, "Approximately 0.07% of the population often presents with the chief complaint of
palpitations". A diagnosis of WPW is made in conjunction with certain characteristics.
Characteristics of WPW include: a short PR interval < 0.12 second caused by a faster electrical
conduction through the accessory pathway than the atrioventricular node, upsloping of the QRS and
a delta wave. The delta wave is indicative of rapid ventricular depolarization caused by the rapid
conduction through the accessory pathway (Kesler & Lahham, 2016, p. 469).

Battered Woman Syndrome Summary
Walker further expanded Martin Seligman's idea of the 60s that the women stayed with their abusers
because of learned helplessness. Seligman's experiment with dogs showed that as a result of
conditioning, a creature would eventually not react because they find that there is no way to avoid
pain. Walker explained that just as the dogs refused to jump after a point, the battered women
eventually figured that beating was unavoidable and there was no way to escape it. In the beginning,
they think that by changing their behavior or actions, they can put an end to the beatings. When this
solution does not work after a while, they tend to become passive and can find no other alternatives
to save themselves. Walker's Battered Woman Syndrome sought to explain the actions of an abuse
victim who fought back and killed her attacker in the process. It suggests that a woman in this
situation was justified in killing her abuser as a result of the circumstances she found herself in. This
meant that any woman had tools with which to defend herself in the courtroom, and that any
reasonable woman would use force in such circumstances when presented with the opportunity. It
was an instinctual response to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This defense of BWS was basically divided into two: insanity or self–defense. Although these
women had been treated as less than human by the deceased, they could only show that they had lost
control of themselves or feared for their lives at the moment they committed this crime. All they had
been through was not considered. As seen in the case of State vs. Norman, there are little options for
women who have been abused to escape even when they want to. Judy Norman had reached out to
the police about her husband's abuse and no help was rendered. When she returned to the house after
being hospitalized, the abuse escalated up until she killed him in his

Suffering with Battered Woman Syndrome
Nearly one in four women in the United States reports experiencing violence by a current or former
spouse or boyfriend at some point in her life (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2008). As
stated in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, " These are our sisters, mothers, friends,
family members, neighbors, and co–workers".Should women that suffer from "battered woman's
syndrome" be charged with murder for killing there abuser? "The term "battered woman syndrome"
was introduced in the late 1970s by psychologist Lenore Walker to explain the psychological
problems of women who are caught in a cycle of domestic violence" (ProQuest Staff). The mind of a
typical domestically abused women has been diagnosed, monitored, and studied by professionals
numerous of times. However, one may believe "battered women syndrome" should be used as an
excuse in court, with prior evidence for self defense and mental illness if the women being abused
had suffered domestic violence tragically.
One may feel as if women sometimes use battered women syndrome as an excuse for murder, most
of the time they do not exactly understand the pain of, being beaten, forced into sex, and choking
these women have been through. Ones opinion may be that women should be able to use this
syndrome as self defense mechanism. For instance, the Barbara Sheehan case. Sheehan was
sentenced for six years shooting her husband in fear for her life, she exclaimed in Dr. Lenore E.

The Controversial Concept Of Battered Woman Syndrome
Battered Woman Syndrome The controversial concept of Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) is a
psychological theory that aims to explain the behavior of certain women who suffer abuse from their
husbands, partners, or significant others. The theory was first proposed and introduced by Dr.
Lenore Walker in the 1970's based on her clinical observations. It then quickly became a common
way to validate criminal behavior of women who were charged with the murder of their partner,
however since the syndrome wasn't confirmed through scientific research as a real disorder, it didn't
enjoy widespread support from the forensic psychologist's community. Learned Helplessness
Originally, battered woman syndrome was termed as learned helplessness. Walker ... Show more

Battered women stay in these perilous relationships for a variety of reasons, including: still being
positively reinforced by the "honeymoon" phase of the battering cycle financial dependence upon
the batterer false belief that they can keep the peace distress of danger if she were to leave threats
made by the batterer to hurt her or her children if she left loss of self–confidence depression or loss
of psychological energy necessary to leave As determined by Dr. Walker 's The Battered Woman
Syndrome (p. 95–97, 1984), there are four common characteristics of the disorder: 1. The woman
believes that the violence was or is her fault. 2. The woman has an inability to place the
responsibility for the violence elsewhere. 3. The woman fears for her life and/or her children 's lives.
4. The woman has an irrational belief that the abuser is omnipresent and omniscient. Women who
are chronically battered has been categorized as a subclass of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
It is composed of the following symptoms: re–living the battering as if it were reoccurring even
when it is not, efforts to circumvent the psychological effect of battering by avoiding activities,
people, and emotions, hyperarousal or hypervigilance, disrupted interpersonal relationships, body
image distortion or other somatic concerns, and sexuality

Prader-Willi Syndrome
Prader–Willi syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the deletion of part of chromosome 15. This
genetic abnormality affects the hypothalamus which influences growth hormones, sex, thirst, and
hunger and is contributed to developmental delay. Children with Prader–Willi syndrome will
develop hyperphagia. Hyperphagia is a serious eating disorder, and is characterized by extreme
overeating to the point where it becomes life–threatening. Hyperphagia is hard to treat and is the
main trait of Prader–Willi syndrome. It is not clear what causes the onset of hyperphagia as it can
develop at different ages. The study looks at whether the young children's unusual eating habits are
explained by changes in appetite hormones. They found that PWS has three

Violence experienced from an intimate partner before pregnancy is the strongest risk factor for
predicting violence during pregnancy (James et al., 2013) Teen girls were at greater risk of
experiencing violence from an intimate partner during pregnancy and in early motherhood compared
to older women (Brownridge et al., 2011). Taft and Collegues (2004) study consisted of 784 teen
girls. Among these girls, pregnancy was associated with an increase in experiencing partner violence
(Taft et al., 2004). Similar studies suggest that young women are at greater risk of experiencing
reproductive control from an intimate partner resulting in an unintended pregnancy (Miller et al.,

Battered Woman Syndrome Analysis
As of 2014, the number of women who had been physically abused by their partner in a relationship
was 38 million. The APA's data shows that almost 5 million women experienced physical abuse by
an intimate partner. Data also revealed that while 1 in 4 women would be abused, 1 in 7 men would
also suffer from intimate partner abuse. 40 to 45% of women would be in an abusive relationship
where they were raped or assaulted. The statistics available show that not only in domestic violence
prevalent in our society, it is also a huge problem that must be dealt with.
It is often forgotten that abusing a partner is not just a personal injustice, but denial of the right of a
person. Due to society's little to know action to assist these victims, it seems to be an accomplice in
the abuse against a person. This has brought the conclusion that while there still exists instances of
domestic violence, especially affecting women as largely as the numbers show, then there is no
equality among the sexes. The roots of domestic violence or women battering has been traced to the
time when women were viewed as the property ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

used the theory as a vehicle to dispel myths surrounding why some victims of abuse stayed

Essay about Criticisms of Battered Woman Syndrome
The Battered Woman Syndrome (BWM) is a syndrome whereas women react in a certain manner
because of repetitively physical or psychological abused imposed on them by their mates. The
Battered Woman Syndrome (BMW) is not limited in one area or location it is a problem that is
occurring all over in the world (2009, pg. 148). Like every other issue in the world criticism come
into play by psychologists and others when someone claims that they are victims of the Battered
Woman Syndrome or the Battered Woman Defense when they are taken to trial for killing their
batterers (BMW) (2009, pgs. 162–163). One criticism in particularly relates to whether or not if

The defense lawyer feels that the reaction of the battered woman after the death of her batterer is
very important, so they call the officer to the stand to ask him questions about this particular time
(2009, pg. 163). Two important and well thought of forms of criticisms can come along with the
battered woman syndrome, one form is that women are categorized by others as being sensitive,
powerless and submissive when she is living with a batterer. Another form is that sometimes there
are deficiencies with the appropriate hypothetical and background information which make it
difficult to use in court (2009, pg. 178). There have been times whereas lawyers and judges have
misconstrued the use of the battered woman syndrome and the fact that women claim that they were
only defending themselves. These lawyers and judges thinks that the battered woman defense is
used by experts only to clarify why the action of women as a battered woman. When battered
women claim self–defense after killing their batterers' some lawyers takes on the role of partiality
which produces inadequately defense for women. Denial by society is another problem that women
face as a battered woman or using the battered woman defense. Sometimes the reaction of a lawyer
and judge shows up in disbelief and awkwardness when they find out the defendant is alleging the
battered woman syndrome to help with her defense. (Dowd 1991, pgs. 11–12).

Hospital in Corpus Christie within a couple of weeks. While being in the care at the hospital,
medical doctors diagnosed Janelle with Prader–Willi Syndrome. As you can imagine, so many

Battered Woman Syndrome Essay
Battered Woman Syndrome As a Defense Battered Woman Syndrome is a medical condition used in
legal defense by victims who have killed their abusive spouse. Years of living within the "Cycle of
Violence," can alter a victim's state of psychosis, leading them to a constant state of intimate–terror.
In recently recognizing this syndrome, the courts will accept a victim's plea of "Battered Woman
Syndrome" as a valid defence after killing their abusive spouse. According to the Domestic Abuse
Shelter, "In today 's society, "Battering" is the single major cause of injury to women, exceeding
rapes, muggings and auto accidents combined" ("Domestic Abuse Shelter – A New Beginning"). In
multiple cases, death threats have been made, causing victims to believe they are on their own
without help from our justice system. This leads to victims finally standing up to their abuser and
putting an end to the years of suffering. Victims who commit this crime truly believe death is the
only way to end this abuse. Spousal Abuse Men Vs. Woman and the Stereotypes Spousal abuse of
men is underestimated in today 's society. Men are perceived as 'tough and strong ' and able to
protect themselves. When a male contacts the authorities, they are not taken seriously or ridiculed
for not being able to 'handle' their intimate partner whereas more emphasis is placed on spousal
abuse of women due to the perception of them as vulnerable in society. Men often dominate woman

I Am A Woman With Amniotic Band Syndrome
For many years, my identity was fluid and varied on how I was perceived socially and physically.
There are various characteristics that attribute to my identity; I am a Latina, I am a woman, and I
also have a physical limitation. I was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome, which is a Congenital
Limb Deficiency. I wear a prosthetic on my right arm every day. The word "disabled" implies that a
person is limited in movements, sense, or activities. I have never considered myself to truly be
"disabled", but I do believe that I am the person that I am today because of the barriers and
challenges that I have overcome due to my physical limitation. Growing up, there was always a
physical difference between myself and my peers. Many children wanted to put me in the category
as the "girl with one arm." I have long strayed from that label, but I continue to struggle with the
relationship between my own identity and how I am perceived within society. "When someone who
cannot see is labeled a 'blind person,' for example, it creates the impression that not being able to see
sums up the entire person. Reducing people to a single dimension of who they are separates and
excludes them, marks them as "other", as different from "normal"(white, heterosexual, male,
nondisabled) people therefor as inferior." (Adams, 2013, p.15–21) Now that I am older, most people
I meet do not seem to describe who I am solely based on my physical difference. This was always
my biggest fear, I never

This symbol is taught in gestural, graphic, and vocal mode. The modality sampling has many
advantages, one of the most important being that it provides important intervention resources.
The main purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of graphic and gestural modes of
communication with a toddler with Angelman syndrome (Martin, Reichle, Dimian, & Chen, 2013).
The participant was Adam, a 21–month–old male with Angelman syndrome. Before the study
started, Adam was assessed in communication, cognition, and fine and gross motor skills. Adam did
not engage in vocal imitation or turn taking. His mother reported that Adam would sometimes
vocalize to get her attention, he would also protest, request, and express excitement. Adam's fine
motor skills were delayed, but he had adequate movements to produce gestures for the study.
Before the sessions started, the three researchers went through a role–play training. This was done to
increase reliability and interobserver agreement between the researchers. The 44 sessions occurred
at the participant's house or at his day care center. The first session was a baseline probe and the rest
of the sessions were divided into five phases. The sessions were held two times per week for five

the most obvious characteristics, the baby will have a dark purple birthmark that covers close to half

pharmacologic treatments for seizures. Most of the seizures from the disease are located only on one

Oxcarbazepine, Lamotrigine, Levetiracetam, Valproic Acid, Zonisamide, Topiramate, Lorazepam,
Phenobarbital, Gabapentin, Pregabalin, Tiagabine, Diazepam, Felbamate, Lacosamide, and
Clonazepam. With the seizures being controlled with medications, it helped prevent future seizures

surgery for patients with Sturge–Weber Syndrome is to improve and prevent developmental delay,

The Issue Of Battered Woman Syndrome Essay
I have known several women to be in abusive relationships, in either physically abusive, verbally
abusive, or emotionally abusive or combinations of those mentioned. I have wondered why these
women remain in these abusive relationships when all they do is complain about how badly they are
being treated. More importantly, I wonder what these women will do when they finally break and
fight back, potentially ending the life of their abuser, what will happen to them then? In finding
research, I started with the basic principle of battered woman syndrome. As I read each article and
learned a little more about what battered woman syndrome is, I wanted to know how these cases are
prosecuted. I wanted to know what factors most affected a jury. I wanted to know what I can do to
help prevent these abused women from turning against their abusers and helping them heal.
Violence against women, around the world or in the United States, was not uncommon until 1871 in
which Alabama had removed the right the husband had to use physical punishment on his wife
(Barner and Carney, 2011, p. 235). By the 1900 's, the majority of the states had laws in place to
help prevent spousal abuse (p. 235). Many of these abuse laws were misdemeanor offenses until
legislation and national attention of women discrimination had risen during the 1960 's (p. 235). As
laws continued to change, the prosecution of the abuser changed from being prosecuted by the
victim to being prosecuted by district attorneys (p.

mostly because of the extensive coverage crimes get nowadays, mass media has influenced the way
we consume news and their power has increased significantly. Moreover, as mentioned in The

Battered Woman Syndrome : The Perfect Defense Or Perfect...
Battered Woman Syndrome: The Perfect Defense Or The Perfect Murder The standards of women
and their rights have changed vastly over the years. In the 1800's women were subject to whatever
treatment a man felt necessary. Self–defense was not heard of and women did not dare stand up for
themselves. In the modern age of today women have the right to be treated just like everyone else is,
with respect. Although women have more rights in today's society and have the right to stand up for
themselves that does not mean abuse does not happen. Shocking statistics show that 1 woman is
beaten by their partner approximately every 15 seconds in the United States alone and 1 and 3
women who are victims of homicide were murdered by their abusive partner. There are many laws
against spousal abuse and abuse against women in general. Once the laws are put into action then
comes the legal defense used in court. Battered Woman Syndrome is a physiological condition just
like depression or mental insanity. It is a real condition that women suffer from because of long term
periods of physical, physiological, and emotional abuse by there loved ones typically spouses. Many

Disparity of force is a situation in which one party in a fight has a significant, unfair advantage over
the other. A weapon such as a gun can both cause and remedy a disparity of force in a self–defense
justification. According to self–defense expert Massad Ayoob: "Deadly force is justified only when
undertaken to prevent imminent and otherwise unavoidable danger of death or grave bodily harm to
the innocent." This justification requires that the attacker had the ability to cause lethal harm, the
immediate opportunity to carry out the attack, and the intention to place the victim's life in jeopardy.

Sleep Apnea Theory
Epidemiology: Obstructive sleep apnea is becoming more prevalent in adults and children in our
society. Obstructive sleep apnea is undiagnosed mostly in women being 92% and 80% in men. The
estimated prevalence in women is 2% and in men is 4%. A study was done by the University of

The Wisconsin Cohrt study showed that people who are 30 to 60 years old, the prevalence is 9–24%

Cri-Du-Chat Syndrome Research Paper
Cri–du–Chat (cat's cry) Syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder that is caused by the deletion of
genetic material on chromosome 5. Due to this, this syndrome has an alternative name, known as
5p–, or 5p minus syndrome. Although this genetic defect is able to be diagnosed, the cause of the
deletion on the chromosome is unknown. Almost all cases of the Cri–du–Chat Syndrome are found
to have no relation with family members or previous generations. This syndrome is generally not
inherited, as the deletion occurs randomly during meiosis (the formation of the gametes). In about
90% of people who have this condition, the deletion is completely random and is not inherited. The
remaining 10% of affected people inherit a chromosome with a deleted section from an unaffected
parent. This is because the parents' balanced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This deletion can occur through a variety of genetic arrangements, in the form of unbalanced
translocation, ring chromosomes, interstitial deletion, and inversion. The main symptom of
individuals with Cri–du–Chat is that at a young age, they have a high pitched cry, that resembles
that of a cat. This cry generally becomes less noticeable as the individual ages. Some of the other
symptoms of Cri–du–Chat Syndrome are mental retardation, hyperactivity, delayed development,
small heads, round faces, low nasal bridges, widely–spaced eyes, low birth weight, and weak muscle
tone. Since the size of the deletion of the genetic material varies between each affected person, these
individuals can all show slightly different symptoms and levels of intensity with these symptoms.
Individuals with this syndrome may come across feeding issues due to difficulties in swallowing
food and sucking in liquids. They also sometimes lack sufficient communication and verbal skills,
and face delays in the progress of learning to walk. There is no cure for Cri–du–Chat Syndrome as

Battered Woman Syndrome: Self-Defense Plea Essay
There are many cases where self– defense has been used as a plea where the victim felt they were in
harms' way or unable to escape a specific situation that ended badly. The definition for self– defense
is: 1. Defense of oneself when physically attacked 2. Defense of what belongs to oneself, as ones
work or reputation 3. (Law) the right to protect oneself against violence or threatened violence with
whatever force or means reasonable or necessary. According to an expert on battered women, a
woman must experience at least two complete battering cycles before being labeled a battered

Given, there is no true way to diagnose battered woman syndrome. It is a name given by a doctor
who has encountered several women facing problems due to abuse in their homes. A woman facing
chronic abuse would be safer using a PTSD plea. "This is not to say that a woman cannot be
assessed for medical signs of physical trauma, however these physical signs are non–definitive of
BWS, and could have occurred at any given moment." (Dixon) There are several arguments that
BWS does not exist. Some try to use BWS as a mental illness or an insanity plea. Clinical expertise
use specific signs and symptoms to verify situations of abuse. These same signs and symptoms are
visible in many given situations and not only those pertaining to BWS. In a study done on learned
helplessness there was no sudden rage or aggression from the caged animals. So, why do these
women claim that their helplessness caused them to harm another. "Further, and more importantly,
there has never been any experiment demonstrating the phenomenon of learned helplessness in
human beings. So, the entire argument for learned helplessness in battered women is pure
conjecture, without any empirical support." (Dixon) Society cannot sit here and say that all women
who are in abusive relationships suffer from BWS. This is a syndrome a woman acquires after many
traumatizing experiences happen in her life. There was a study done by Martin Seligman on learned
helplessness.

Cornelia De Lange Syndrome
Cornelia de Lange Syndrome typically presents with a constellation of distinctive features affecting
several different parts of the body. There is a wide degree of variation between individuals with the
disorder in the presentation and severity of symptoms; however, the features described below
represent a typical presentation. Slow growth during both fetal and post–natal development is a
characteristic feature of the disorder. Approximately 90% or more of patients display delayed
skeletal maturation, and about 50% were noted to have intrauterine growth retardation (2). Because
of this, individuals with Cornelia de Lange syndrome tend to be short in stature, with height and
weight falling below the fifth percentile throughout life (3). ... Show more content on

CdLS; approximately 40% are severely affected (3). Opthalmological issues, such as myopia (near–

General Characteristics of Battered Woman Syndrome
Battered Woman Syndrome
An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. A
surfacing psychological condition known as Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS), develops after
experiencing physical and emotional abuse over an extended period of time. BWS has been
subcategorized as a form of post–traumatic stress disorder, proving that it is indeed, a very serious
and severe condition. Battered Woman Syndrome causes severe, emotional and psychological
trauma in women after prolonged abuse in an intimate relationship; the number of Battered Woman

Women stay because sometimes, they have nowhere left to go. She stays because she believes that
maybe, the man she once loved will stop the abuse. Women stay in these abusive relationships
because they are trapped and they are helpless. The question is not why do these women stay, but
why do these men feel the obligation and audacity to batter them. Even when the cycle of abuse
seems endless, however, there are ways to help and treat a victim of domestic violence or more so, a
battered woman. First of all, safety must be established. For a battered woman, even hinting towards
divorce or a break–up with the batterer can be the most unsafe time. Secondly, a treatment plan and
or trauma therapy should be
considered to ensure a safe recovery for the victim of abuse. Therapy can be a very powerful tool in
helping victims heal after abuse. The therapy addresses the fear and guilt that the victim feels as
well as helping to mend difficult relationships and unhealthy behaviors that develop. Trauma
therapy helps a victim move pass her abusive experiences and helps her understand that the
psychological effects of the abuse are normal and can, very well, be treated. A battered woman's
symptoms after abuse are referred to as traumatic triggers: "typical trauma triggers include the

Battered Woman Syndrome And The National Institute Of Justice
According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and The National Institute of Justice,
one in four women in the United States has experienced domestic violence during her lifetime
(Battered Woman Syndrome, 2012). This type of abuse can be fatal and detrimental to one's
personal growth. When woman are repeatedly abused, they show different signs, symptoms and
general characteristics. These characteristics are defined as Battered Woman Syndrome. Battered
Woman Syndrome, or BTS, was a theory that was developed in the 1970's (Battered Woman
Syndrome, 2010). As stated before, BTS is the signs, symptoms, and general characteristics of
battered woman. According to Dr. Lenore E. Walker, the "mother of Battered Woman Syndrome," a
"battered woman" is any woman 18 years of age or older, who is or has been in an intimate
relationship with a man who repeatedly subjects her to physical and/or psychological abuse
(Battered Woman Syndrome, 2010, p. 4). In order to understand Battered Woman Syndrome, the
general characteristics must be explained. There are four general characteristics of BTS; the first
characteristic is that the woman believes that the violence inflicted is her fault. She believes that no
matter the situation, when she is abused, she did something to deserve that abuse. The second
characteristic is that the woman is incapable of placing the responsibility for the violet actions
elsewhere. Third characteristic is the women perpetually fears for her life/lives of

The Battered Woman Syndrome and Criminal Law Essay
The purpose of this research paper is to prove that criminal law in America has failed to provide a
defense that adequately protects women suffering from Battered Women's Syndrome. Battered
Women's Syndrome, or BWS, is a very complex psychological problem facing criminal courts today
and has caused great debate on whether or not it should even be allowed in the courtroom. Although
the syndrome has been given more consideration as a warranted issue by society, those who create
our laws and control our courtrooms, have not developed a defense that sufficiently protects these
women. United States courtrooms, instead of protecting battered women, have put these women on
trial and found them guilty of murder.

This new issue led Del Martin to publish Battered Wives in 1976, the first piece written about
battered women in the U.S. Although the research on battered women had just begun, many
American courtrooms began dealing with these relatively new cases involving women as early as
1977. The famous case of State v. Wanrow (1977), resulted in the Washington State Supreme Court
declaring the need for a more gender–based self–defense test. This case led to a greater approval of
battered women's issues among the public and sparked renewed interest in psychological research
(Downs pg. 77).
Battered Women's Syndrome, although originating in part from the oppression of women, was
initially developed by psychologists to help explain the behavior of women who were exposed to
frequent and continuous abuse. The most highly recognized in the field of BWS, is psychologist Dr.
Lenore Walker. Walker has dedicated most of her life to studying battered women and their
victimization. Using the psychological theory of "learned helplessness," Dr. Walker came up with
her own hypothesis to explain why battered women behave the way they do (Dubin pg. 9). Walker's
findings resulted in the theory known as the "cycle of violence" (Downs pg. 76). The cycle portrays
three distinct phases in which battered women go through with their abusers. Phase One is known as
the "tension building phase." In this phase

Battered Woman Syndrome In Susan Glaspell's Trifles
While the male characters in Susan Glaspell's on–act play Trifles are oblivious to the distress of
Mrs. Wright, it is clear to the female characters and any modern reader that Mr. Wright and Mrs.
Wright's marriage was unhappy at best. There is also cause to believe that Mrs. Wright is responsible
for her husband's death, especially in light of Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters discovering the dead bird in
Mrs. Wright's sewing bag. An unhappy marriage does not excuse murder, but there is evidence to
support the claim that John Wright was mentally and/or physically abusive. Such behavior on the
part of Mr. Wright over an extended period of time could result in a mental state known as Battered

Mr. and Mrs. Wright have been married for approximately thirty years. The way Mrs. Wright's bird
was killed and the way Mr. Wright was killed indicates that Mrs. Wright is responsible for the death

the abused party was not in an immediately life threatening situation, the prior abuse and the stress it
caused impacted her mental state to the point where she believed that killing the abuser was the only
way to save herself from him. This makes the killing an act of self–defense, rather than cold–
blooded murder. In a modern legal system, it is possible that Mrs. Wright would be given a reduced
sentence due to the nature of her relationship with her husband. Unfortunately for Mrs. Wright,
judges and juries in the early 1900's did not have the insight into the impacts of prolonged stress and
abuse that they do

exactly apply as it would to others. I personally feel that this defense can be very helpful to women
who truly need it, and it provides a cover for women who truly don't need to be protected and need
to be persecuted to the fullest extent of the law for the crimes which they have committed. This is

Moral Implications of the Battered Woman Syndrome
The Battered Woman Syndrome, like the Cycle Theory of Violence, helps to illuminate the situation
of the person victimized by domestic violence. However, it may also contribute to the violence of
the battering situation. In this paper, I explore some of the implications of the Battered Woman
Syndrome for domestic violence cases wherein an abused woman kills her abuser. I begin by
delineating some of the circumstances of a domestic violence situation. I then discuss the particular
moral issue of subjectivity or moral personhood involved in instances wherein a woman victimized
by domestic violence responds by killing her batterer. Finally, I argue that the Battered Woman

I then discuss the particular moral issue of subjectivity or moral personhood involved in instances
wherein a woman victimized by domestic violence responds by killing her batterer. Finally, I argue
that the battered woman syndrome and similar alternatives to or qualifications of self–defense are
problematic because they strip a woman of her moral subjectivity. I conclude with a brief
articulation of a proposal for reform of the criminal justice system specifically aimed at cases
wherein there has been a long history of abuse or violence.
Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is defined as violence among intimates. It raises problems for our moral and legal
systems in that it is often characterized by a loving partnership wherein one or both of the partners
commits a violent crime against the other partner. (1) The Cycle Theory of Violence, articulated by
Lenore Walker, helps to clarify domestic violence and says that abuse tends to occur according to a
particular pattern. There are three basic stages to this pattern. The first stage is characterized by
tension between the pair. During this tension building stage, relatively minor incidents increase the
tension in the relationship and culminate in the eruption of violence.
The next stage in the cycle of violence is the violent incident. The violence may be short lived or
last for a few days. Often it is at this stage that police are notified or legal proceedings begun.
The third stage is referred to as the

How Mass Media Perpetuates Social Stratification and Reinforces Social Inequalities
Introduction The influence of mass media in our lives has grown exponentially in the last decade. As
mass media platforms have developed and expanded, human societies have gained unprecedented
access and updates to news occurring around the globe. We trust and rely on the media as our source
for current news, education, and entertainment. While there is a seemingly infinite amount of
content available, only a small fraction of that content appears in national media reports. More often
than not, we absorb this information without considering who is behind the information or how that
information may impact how we interact with one another. Prior to writing this paper, I did not
realize that over 90% of the media in the United States is owned by six major corporations. These
corporations have the power to shape our opinions and heavily influence our beliefs and decisions.

A Case Witness For Battered Woman Syndrome
Over the course of this semester we have studied many different subjects of criminal law. I found
that our studies on assault, battery, and other crimes against the person to be the most interesting. To
me this subject was the most compelling because I was unaware of many of the requirements that
constitutes assault, battery, kidnapping, etc. I also found it interesting because this particular subject
was relevant and useful for Business Law, a class I am enrolled in at my high school. In Business
Law, we were to participate in a mock trial of a woman who claimed to shoot her husband because
of Battered Woman Syndrome. I was the expert witness for Battered Woman Syndrome in this trial.
This class and the subject discussed Battered Woman Syndrome, which lead me to be an educated
on this topic. Between studying this subject and taking part in the mock trial I have gained an
interest for these particular crimes and, especially, Battered Woman Syndrome. I have learned a
significant amount of information about this subject and the related crimes. First off, I learned that
crimes against the person include assault, battery, genital mutilation, sports injuries that exceeds the
rules of the game, physical contact without consent, menacing, mayhem, malicious disfigurement,
child abuse, child neglect, hate crimes, kidnapping, hostage taking, false imprisonment, child
snatching, family violence, violence at the workplace, and road rage. I learned that a battery cannot

Missing White Woman Syndrome Summary

  • 1. Missing White Woman Syndrome Summary The disappearance and death of Maylin has created an awareness of not only her disappearance, but of many other Latina's who have gone missing. This article states that missing Latina's are not getting the news coverage they deserve. It also talks about how white women are innocent victims in disappearance scenarios, whereas black women and Latina's are involved in activities that in some form lead to their kidnapping and death. This article explains how more news coverage on missing women of color could make a difference in whether they are found alive or dead. This is something that is true because the more the public is informed on missing people the more they will be able to help out with these cases. This article is relevant to my topic because it will help support my claim on the lack of news coverage of missing women of color. "Missing White Woman Syndrome" is described as the extensive media coverage missing white females receive. In many cases these missing women are rich, attractive, and young. This article states that there are missing children who are non–white who do not get the media attention that white children get. A reason for this is because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many times news coverage is slanted due to "framing." This is magnifying or minimizing coverage based on such factors as a woman's youth, beauty, and occupation. Although there is an obvious difference between media coverage on white females and females of color, it is not intentional. This article states that the news does not equally present information on missing victims of color. Women who are white often have their family members describe the person they were, but many times women of color do not get this. This source will be helpful in writing my research essay on the differences in reports of missing white women and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Battered Woman Syndrome Research Paper Battered Woman Syndrome has been recognized as a subcategory of post–traumatic stress disorder (Walker, 2009). All women who have been battered do not meet all of the criteria in the DSM–V for post–traumatic stress disorder but many of them do (Walker, 2009). It is also important to note that women who suffer from Battered Woman Syndrome may suffer from other mental health conditions. Treatment should be tailored to fit the unique needs of the battered woman. However, according to Walker (2009) treatment of post–traumatic stress disorder and Battered Woman Syndrome may include a combination of feminist and trauma therapy. Feminist therapy helps the victim understand the situational factors that are out of her control which may motivate her to accept and change the factors that she can control (Walker, 2009). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, suing an abuser for financial resources after filing for divorce may be an empowering action in the midst of such stressful legal action (Walker, 2009). On the other hand, trauma therapy helps the victim better understand her psychological symptoms that come from her exposure to trauma (Walker, 2009).Distinctive trauma triggers include the memory of the abusers face, the sound of his voice, and even the batterers scent during the abuse (Walker, 2009). The sensitivity to these triggers can interfere with new relationships and many times never fully go away (Walker, 2009). It is imperative to empower these victims of trauma to strive for change but it is equally important to be able to explain how the abuse and fear triggers desperation in the victim as mental health professionals. Documenting the clients comments about the abuse and the fear of her abuser may help mental health professionals better understand Battered Woman's Syndrome (Walker, ... • 5. History Of Present Illness : 34 Year Old Woman With A... History of present illness: 34–year–old woman with a history of Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome complains of intermittent palpitations since 2005. She has had a 24–hour Holter, which was unremarkable. She came in for a follow–up visit and had an EKG done that revealed the presence of pre–excitation. The patient reports a daily sensation of palpitations that lasts for several minutes. The patient reports lightheadedness with the palpitations without syncope. The patient underwent an exercise treadmill evaluation, which showed no evidence of ischemia. The echocardiography revealed a structurally normal heart. Delta waves were noted during evaluation but resolved at higher heart rates. Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome (WPW) is a conduction disorder of the heart that is caused by pre accessory pathway resulting in tachyarrhythmias. Kesler & Lahham (2016) state, "Approximately 0.07% of the population often presents with the chief complaint of palpitations". A diagnosis of WPW is made in conjunction with certain characteristics. Characteristics of WPW include: a short PR interval < 0.12 second caused by a faster electrical conduction through the accessory pathway than the atrioventricular node, upsloping of the QRS and a delta wave. The delta wave is indicative of rapid ventricular depolarization caused by the rapid conduction through the accessory pathway (Kesler & Lahham, 2016, p. 469). • 7. Battered Woman Syndrome Summary Walker further expanded Martin Seligman's idea of the 60s that the women stayed with their abusers because of learned helplessness. Seligman's experiment with dogs showed that as a result of conditioning, a creature would eventually not react because they find that there is no way to avoid pain. Walker explained that just as the dogs refused to jump after a point, the battered women eventually figured that beating was unavoidable and there was no way to escape it. In the beginning, they think that by changing their behavior or actions, they can put an end to the beatings. When this solution does not work after a while, they tend to become passive and can find no other alternatives to save themselves. Walker's Battered Woman Syndrome sought to explain the actions of an abuse victim who fought back and killed her attacker in the process. It suggests that a woman in this situation was justified in killing her abuser as a result of the circumstances she found herself in. This meant that any woman had tools with which to defend herself in the courtroom, and that any reasonable woman would use force in such circumstances when presented with the opportunity. It was an instinctual response to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This defense of BWS was basically divided into two: insanity or self–defense. Although these women had been treated as less than human by the deceased, they could only show that they had lost control of themselves or feared for their lives at the moment they committed this crime. All they had been through was not considered. As seen in the case of State vs. Norman, there are little options for women who have been abused to escape even when they want to. Judy Norman had reached out to the police about her husband's abuse and no help was rendered. When she returned to the house after being hospitalized, the abuse escalated up until she killed him in his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Suffering with Battered Woman Syndrome Nearly one in four women in the United States reports experiencing violence by a current or former spouse or boyfriend at some point in her life (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2008). As stated in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, " These are our sisters, mothers, friends, family members, neighbors, and co–workers".Should women that suffer from "battered woman's syndrome" be charged with murder for killing there abuser? "The term "battered woman syndrome" was introduced in the late 1970s by psychologist Lenore Walker to explain the psychological problems of women who are caught in a cycle of domestic violence" (ProQuest Staff). The mind of a typical domestically abused women has been diagnosed, monitored, and studied by professionals numerous of times. However, one may believe "battered women syndrome" should be used as an excuse in court, with prior evidence for self defense and mental illness if the women being abused had suffered domestic violence tragically. One may feel as if women sometimes use battered women syndrome as an excuse for murder, most of the time they do not exactly understand the pain of, being beaten, forced into sex, and choking these women have been through. Ones opinion may be that women should be able to use this syndrome as self defense mechanism. For instance, the Barbara Sheehan case. Sheehan was sentenced for six years shooting her husband in fear for her life, she exclaimed in Dr. Lenore E. Walker's novel The Battered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Controversial Concept Of Battered Woman Syndrome Battered Woman Syndrome The controversial concept of Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) is a psychological theory that aims to explain the behavior of certain women who suffer abuse from their husbands, partners, or significant others. The theory was first proposed and introduced by Dr. Lenore Walker in the 1970's based on her clinical observations. It then quickly became a common way to validate criminal behavior of women who were charged with the murder of their partner, however since the syndrome wasn't confirmed through scientific research as a real disorder, it didn't enjoy widespread support from the forensic psychologist's community. This genetic abnormality affects the hypothalamus which influences growth hormones, sex, thirst, and hunger and is contributed to developmental delay. Children with Prader–Willi syndrome will develop hyperphagia. Hyperphagia is a serious eating disorder, and is characterized by extreme overeating to the point where it becomes life–threatening. Hyperphagia is hard to treat and is the main trait of Prader–Willi syndrome. It is not clear what causes the onset of hyperphagia as it can develop at different ages. • 15. Battered Woman Syndrome Violence experienced from an intimate partner before pregnancy is the strongest risk factor for predicting violence during pregnancy (James et al., 2013) Teen girls were at greater risk of experiencing violence from an intimate partner during pregnancy and in early motherhood compared to older women (Brownridge et al., 2011). Taft and Collegues (2004) study consisted of 784 teen girls. Among these girls, pregnancy was associated with an increase in experiencing partner violence (Taft et al., 2004). • 17. Battered Woman Syndrome Analysis As of 2014, the number of women who had been physically abused by their partner in a relationship was 38 million. The APA's data shows that almost 5 million women experienced physical abuse by an intimate partner. Data also revealed that while 1 in 4 women would be abused, 1 in 7 men would also suffer from intimate partner abuse. 40 to 45% of women would be in an abusive relationship where they were raped or assaulted. The statistics available show that not only in domestic violence prevalent in our society, it is also a huge problem that must be dealt with. It is often forgotten that abusing a partner is not just a personal injustice, but denial of the right of a person. Due to society's little to know action to assist these victims, it seems to be an accomplice in the abuse against a person. This has brought the conclusion that while there still exists instances of domestic violence, especially affecting women as largely as the numbers show, then there is no equality among the sexes. The Battered Woman Syndrome (BMW) is not limited in one area or location it is a problem that is occurring all over in the world (2009, pg. 148). The defense lawyer feels that the reaction of the battered woman after the death of her batterer is very important, so they call the officer to the stand to ask him questions about this particular time (2009, pg. 163). Two important and well thought of forms of criticisms can come along with the battered woman syndrome, one form is that women are categorized by others as being sensitive, powerless and submissive when she is living with a batterer. Another form is that sometimes there are deficiencies with the appropriate hypothetical and background information which make it difficult to use in court (2009, pg. 178). There have been times whereas lawyers and judges have misconstrued the use of the battered woman syndrome and the fact that women claim that they were only defending themselves. These lawyers and judges thinks that the battered woman defense is used by experts only to clarify why the action of women as a battered woman. When battered women claim self–defense after killing their batterers' some lawyers takes on the role of partiality which produces inadequately defense for women. Denial by society is another problem that women face as a battered woman or using the battered woman defense. Unaware of her condition in Brownsville, she was sent to Driscoll Hospital in Corpus Christie within a couple of weeks. While being in the care at the hospital, medical doctors diagnosed Janelle with Prader–Willi Syndrome. As you can imagine, so many questions and thoughts went through her parent's minds. To start, what is Prader–Willi Syndrome (PWS)? According to Genetic Home Reference, PWS is a complex genetic condition that affects many parts of the body, such as muscle tone, insatiable appetite, intellectual impairment, and learning disabilities. Years of living within the "Cycle of Violence," can alter a victim's state of psychosis, leading them to a constant state of intimate–terror. In recently recognizing this syndrome, the courts will accept a victim's plea of "Battered Woman Syndrome" as a valid defence after killing their abusive spouse. According to the Domestic Abuse Shelter, "In today 's society, "Battering" is the single major cause of injury to women, exceeding rapes, muggings and auto accidents combined" ("Domestic Abuse Shelter – A New Beginning"). In multiple cases, death threats have been made, causing victims to believe they are on their own without help from our justice system. This leads to victims finally standing up to their abuser and putting an end to the years of suffering. Victims who commit this crime truly believe death is the only way to end this abuse. Spousal Abuse Men Vs. Woman and the Stereotypes Spousal abuse of men is underestimated in today 's society. Men are perceived as 'tough and strong ' and able to protect themselves. When a male contacts the authorities, they are not taken seriously or ridiculed for not being able to 'handle' their intimate partner whereas more emphasis is placed on spousal abuse of women due to the perception of them as vulnerable in society. There are various characteristics that attribute to my identity; I am a Latina, I am a woman, and I also have a physical limitation. I was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome, which is a Congenital Limb Deficiency. I wear a prosthetic on my right arm every day. The word "disabled" implies that a person is limited in movements, sense, or activities. I have never considered myself to truly be "disabled", but I do believe that I am the person that I am today because of the barriers and challenges that I have overcome due to my physical limitation. Growing up, there was always a physical difference between myself and my peers. Many children wanted to put me in the category as the "girl with one arm." I have long strayed from that label, but I continue to struggle with the relationship between my own identity and how I am perceived within society. "When someone who cannot see is labeled a 'blind person,' for example, it creates the impression that not being able to see sums up the entire person. Reducing people to a single dimension of who they are separates and excludes them, marks them as "other", as different from "normal"(white, heterosexual, male, nondisabled) people therefor as inferior." (Adams, 2013, p.15–21) Now that I am older, most people I meet do not seem to describe who I am solely based on my physical difference. This was always my biggest fear, I never ... The Article Is Titled “Communication Modality Sampling The article is titled "Communication Modality Sampling for a Toddler with Angelman Syndrome" by Jolene Hyppa Martin, Joe Reichle, Adele Dimian, and Mo Chen. The authors explored three modes of communication, vocal, gestural, and graphic, with a young child with Angelman syndrome. The researchers investigated which mode of communication would be the most effective and efficient for the child. Angelman syndrome can cause cognitive, communication, and physical disabilities. It is a disorder that affects around 1 in 10,000 births and for the majority of the cases, the cause is genetic. Angelman syndrome can be caused by an abnormality in chromosome 15. The main purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of graphic and gestural modes of communication with a toddler with Angelman syndrome (Martin, Reichle, Dimian, & Chen, 2013). The participant was Adam, a 21–month–old male with Angelman syndrome. Before the study started, Adam was assessed in communication, cognition, and fine and gross motor skills. Adam did not engage in vocal imitation or turn taking. His mother reported that Adam would sometimes vocalize to get her attention, he would also protest, request, and express excitement. Adam's fine motor skills were delayed, but he had adequate movements to produce gestures for the study. Before the sessions started, the three researchers went through a role–play training. This was done to increase reliability and interobserver agreement between the researchers. The 44 sessions occurred at the participant's house or at his day care center. With the most obvious characteristics, the baby will have a dark purple birthmark that covers close to half of his/her face. Another symptom from Sturge–Weber Syndrome is that it can cause neurological deformity. Both of these symptoms are caused by the abnormal blood vessels near the eye and on the surface of the brain. • 33. The Issue Of Battered Woman Syndrome Essay I have known several women to be in abusive relationships, in either physically abusive, verbally abusive, or emotionally abusive or combinations of those mentioned. I have wondered why these women remain in these abusive relationships when all they do is complain about how badly they are being treated. More importantly, I wonder what these women will do when they finally break and fight back, potentially ending the life of their abuser, what will happen to them then? In finding research, I started with the basic principle of battered woman syndrome. As I read each article and learned a little more about what battered woman syndrome is, I wanted to know how these cases are prosecuted. I wanted to know what factors most affected a jury. I wanted to know what I can do to help prevent these abused women from turning against their abusers and helping them heal. Violence against women, around the world or in the United States, was not uncommon until 1871 in which Alabama had removed the right the husband had to use physical punishment on his wife (Barner and Carney, 2011, p. 235). By the 1900 's, the majority of the states had laws in place to help prevent spousal abuse (p. 235). Many of these abuse laws were misdemeanor offenses until legislation and national attention of women discrimination had risen during the 1960 's (p. 235). Battered Woman Syndrome: The Perfect Defense Or The Perfect Murder The standards of women and their rights have changed vastly over the years. In the 1800's women were subject to whatever treatment a man felt necessary. Self–defense was not heard of and women did not dare stand up for themselves. In the modern age of today women have the right to be treated just like everyone else is, with respect. Although women have more rights in today's society and have the right to stand up for themselves that does not mean abuse does not happen. Shocking statistics show that 1 woman is beaten by their partner approximately every 15 seconds in the United States alone and 1 and 3 women who are victims of homicide were murdered by their abusive partner. There are many laws against spousal abuse and abuse against women in general. Once the laws are put into action then comes the legal defense used in court. This new issue led Del Martin to publish Battered Wives in 1976, the first piece written about battered women in the U.S. Although the research on battered women had just begun, many American courtrooms began dealing with these relatively new cases involving women as early as 1977. The famous case of State v. Wanrow (1977), resulted in the Washington State Supreme Court declaring the need for a more gender–based self–defense test. This case led to a greater approval of battered women's issues among the public and sparked renewed interest in psychological research (Downs pg. 77). Battered Women's Syndrome, although originating in part from the oppression of women, was initially developed by psychologists to help explain the behavior of women who were exposed to frequent and continuous abuse. The most highly recognized in the field of BWS, is psychologist Dr. Lenore Walker. Walker has dedicated most of her life to studying battered women and their victimization. Using the psychological theory of "learned helplessness," Dr. Walker came up with her own hypothesis to explain why battered women behave the way they do (Dubin pg. 9). Walker's findings resulted in the theory known as the "cycle of violence" (Downs pg. 76). The cycle portrays three distinct phases in which battered women go through with their abusers. Phase One is known as the "tension building phase." In this phase ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Battered Woman Syndrome In Susan Glaspell's Trifles While the male characters in Susan Glaspell's on–act play Trifles are oblivious to the distress of Mrs. Wright, it is clear to the female characters and any modern reader that Mr. Wright and Mrs. Wright's marriage was unhappy at best. There is also cause to believe that Mrs. Wright is responsible for her husband's death, especially in light of Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters discovering the dead bird in Mrs. Wright's sewing bag. An unhappy marriage does not excuse murder, but there is evidence to support the claim that John Wright was mentally and/or physically abusive. Such behavior on the part of Mr. Wright over an extended period of time could result in a mental state known as Battered Woman Syndrome, a precursor to post–traumatic stress disorder(PTSD). According to the Encyclopedia of Trauma and Traumatic Stress Disorders, "Battered woman syndrome has been used as a defense in trials in which a woman has injured or killed an abusive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mr. and Mrs. Wright have been married for approximately thirty years. The way Mrs. Wright's bird was killed and the way Mr. Wright was killed indicates that Mrs. Wright is responsible for the death of her husband. The legal defense of murder as a result of Battered Woman Syndrome is that, while the abused party was not in an immediately life threatening situation, the prior abuse and the stress it caused impacted her mental state to the point where she believed that killing the abuser was the only way to save herself from him. This makes the killing an act of self–defense, rather than cold– blooded murder. In a modern legal system, it is possible that Mrs. Wright would be given a reduced sentence due to the nature of her relationship with her husband. Unfortunately for Mrs. Wright, judges and juries in the early 1900's did not have the insight into the impacts of prolonged stress and abuse that they do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Battered Woman Syndrome In Purple Hibiscus Adichie's Purple Hibiscus is a coming–of–age novel is about the effects of an oppressive patriarchal society. Throughout the story, Beatrice––the mother of the protagonist Kambili––agonizes because of her abusive relationship with her husband, which leads to her act of murdering him. Beatrice displays several symptoms of battered woman syndrome throughout the novel. Battered woman syndrome is a mental disorder that emerges within victims of long–term domestic abuse (Thomson Reuters). Around 4,000 women a year die at the hands of their abusers – 75 percent of them because they are trying to leave. For women, killing is often seen as a last resort (Starre Vartan). An example of a battered woman syndrome case is the case is People v. Scott in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No longer is she shackled by the patriarchal society, but instead she is shackled by her own guilt.. One of the symptoms of Battered woman syndrome is performance at work or other important daily activities are affected (Joan McClennen). Beatrice now gives off "the air of the unkempt woman in Ogbete market"(295). She "is walking slowly; her limp more noticeable,"(306), implying she has difficulty walking. Her body is now "painfully bony body,"(296), she hasn't been eating regularly. She's been ignoring basic human needs, and doesn't value herself. After they visit Jaja who's now in jail, Beatrice finally speaks––Kambili is taken aback, not because of her words a simple "Thank you,"(306), but because this is "one of the few times in the past three years that she has spoken without being first spoken to" (306). Kambili also states her mother, "usually says nothing,"(298), further evidence that Beatrice hasn't spoken much since Eugene's death. While not officially diagnosed in the novel, Beatrice suffers in a abusive patriarchal society and clearly displays multiple symptoms of battered woman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. When Looking Into Battered Woman Syndrome It Is A Relatively When looking into Battered Woman Syndrome it is a relatively new defense and standing point in the court of law compared to other methods. This defense has also gained a ton of scrutiny in its time as it is a very vague defense and can be used in a multitude of situations in which it does not exactly apply as it would to others. I personally feel that this defense can be very helpful to women who truly need it, and it provides a cover for women who truly don't need to be protected and need to be persecuted to the fullest extent of the law for the crimes which they have committed. This is something we went over for a journal and it interested me a great deal, especially with the case of Susan Wright. In the first article by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One had information from an Expert Witness and one did not. She also used this method again, but with smaller groups from a total of 131 students, which gave the same result. No matter if they had expert testimony or not, the groups all felt the charges should be changed from Murder to Manslaughter and all groups had agreed that the woman had acted out of self–defense. In my third article by Lenore Walker discusses Battered Women and the impact caused on them from martial abuse that had led to Battered Women to be diagnosed with PTSD from the level of beatings, and constant abuse they took from their partners over the time of the relationship. Walker discusses five major areas that negatively affected with the women's coping skills they are manipulation, dissociation, anger, intimacy, and compliance. When she was assessing women of the PTSD like symptoms she had come to notice a few things about the women, that lead to diagnose them with PTSD as the symptoms, as well as what triggered the responses are the same across the board for all those diagnosed with PTSD. She noticed that many of the victims would minimize the trauma or even deny it happened from the very start which is a common coping method that she had pointed out in her article. She also noticed that some of the women would almost go into a sort of trance like state in which they would gaze ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Moral Implications of the Battered Woman Syndrome Moral Implications of the Battered Woman Syndrome The Battered Woman Syndrome, like the Cycle Theory of Violence, helps to illuminate the situation of the person victimized by domestic violence. However, it may also contribute to the violence of the battering situation. In this paper, I explore some of the implications of the Battered Woman Syndrome for domestic violence cases wherein an abused woman kills her abuser. I begin by delineating some of the circumstances of a domestic violence situation. I then discuss the particular moral issue of subjectivity or moral personhood involved in instances wherein a woman victimized by domestic violence responds by killing her batterer. Finally, I argue that the Battered Woman Syndrome and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I then discuss the particular moral issue of subjectivity or moral personhood involved in instances wherein a woman victimized by domestic violence responds by killing her batterer. Finally, I argue that the battered woman syndrome and similar alternatives to or qualifications of self–defense are problematic because they strip a woman of her moral subjectivity. I conclude with a brief articulation of a proposal for reform of the criminal justice system specifically aimed at cases wherein there has been a long history of abuse or violence. Domestic Violence Domestic violence is defined as violence among intimates. It raises problems for our moral and legal systems in that it is often characterized by a loving partnership wherein one or both of the partners commits a violent crime against the other partner. (1) The Cycle Theory of Violence, articulated by Lenore Walker, helps to clarify domestic violence and says that abuse tends to occur according to a particular pattern. There are three basic stages to this pattern. The first stage is characterized by tension between the pair. During this tension building stage, relatively minor incidents increase the tension in the relationship and culminate in the eruption of violence. The next stage in the cycle of violence is the violent incident. The violence may be short lived or last for a few days. Often it is at this stage that police are notified or legal proceedings begun. The third stage is referred to as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Missing White Woman Syndrome Research Paper Kelly Mulquin Dr. Pratt Intro to Sociology 10/03/2014 Missing White Woman Syndrome How Mass Media Perpetuates Social Stratification and Reinforces Social Inequalities Introduction The influence of mass media in our lives has grown exponentially in the last decade. As mass media platforms have developed and expanded, human societies have gained unprecedented access and updates to news occurring around the globe. We trust and rely on the media as our source for current news, education, and entertainment. While there is a seemingly infinite amount of content available, only a small fraction of that content appears in national media reports. More often than not, we absorb this information without considering who is behind the information or how that information may impact how we interact with one another. Prior to writing this paper, I did not realize that over 90% of the media in the United States is owned by six major corporations. These corporations have the power to shape our opinions and heavily influence our beliefs and decisions. This paper will analyze Missing White Woman Syndrome (MWWS), the disproportionate ... Ms. Murphy and Ms. Graham shared numerous similarities including gender, social class, perceived attractiveness, and education level yet Ms. Murphy received much fewer news coverage. • 77. A Case Witness For Battered Woman Syndrome Over the course of this semester we have studied many different subjects of criminal law. I found that our studies on assault, battery, and other crimes against the person to be the most interesting. To me this subject was the most compelling because I was unaware of many of the requirements that constitutes assault, battery, kidnapping, etc. I also found it interesting because this particular subject was relevant and useful for Business Law, a class I am enrolled in at my high school. In Business Law, we were to participate in a mock trial of a woman who claimed to shoot her husband because of Battered Woman Syndrome. I was the expert witness for Battered Woman Syndrome in this trial. This class and the subject discussed Battered Woman Syndrome, which lead me to be an educated on this topic. Between studying this subject and taking part in the mock trial I have gained an interest for these particular crimes and, especially, Battered Woman Syndrome. I have learned a significant amount of information about this subject and the related crimes. First off, I learned that crimes against the person include assault, battery, genital mutilation, sports injuries that exceeds the rules of the game, physical contact without consent, menacing, mayhem, malicious disfigurement, child abuse, child neglect, hate crimes, kidnapping, hostage taking, false imprisonment, child snatching, family violence, violence at the workplace, and road rage. I learned that a battery cannot be committed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
