50 tips 2011

Editor's Notes

  1. I have always appreciated the Navigation Pane available in Adobe Acrobat. Now a similar tool is available in Word 2010. To turn it on, click the checkmark for Navigation Pane on the View ribbon.
  2. Once you do, the Navigation bar will appear on the left and let you navigate the document using bookmarks, styles, and pages.
  3. A very easy way of adding help to PDF documents is available in Adobe Acrobat. In the PDF document, simply add a comment and make the help text the comment. You can change the icon associated with the comment to a question make to make it more clear that this is for help.
  4. Here is an example of how a document will look and what the user sees when they hover over a ?.
  5. Mozilla Firefox 4 has a new feature called Apps Tabs that lets you take sites that you use often and save them as small tabs that open on the left side of your open tabs. These will open every time you start Firefox and be available for you immediately while not taking much room. To make a site an App Tab, open the site, then right click on the tab and choose Pin as App Tab.
  6. Tab Groups (also known as Panorama) are an easy way to organize a lot of tabs. With Tab Groups you can visually group related tabs, switch between groups and quickly search through all of your tabs. To learn about them quickly, go to http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/what-are-tab-groups.
  7. So that you have the same settings and favorites on multiple computers, set up sync on Mozilla Firefox and when you add a bookmark on one computer, you’ll have it on them all. You can choose what to sync from bookmarks, passwords, preferences, history, and tabs.
  8. Similar to Google Cloud Connect, Windows Live Mesh allows you to keep up-to-date copies of documents, photos, and other files on all of your computers, whether PC or Mac. Even if your computer is offline, you can still view and work on the files you need. As well as documents, it lets you sync IE and Office settings so your favorites, dictionaries, and email signatures are the same on all your computers.
  9. If you find Word much more to your taste than Google Docs for doing your work, but like the idea of having your document available in the “cloud” for your convenience and for collaborations, you can install Google Cloud Connect and have the best of both worlds. This free tools will install with Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, and 2010. You can have simultaneous editing and edit offline to be synced up the next time you log in.
  10. PureSync lets you make backups of entire folders to network or external drives. This is especially useful for administrators who have users who insist on using their C: drives which normally are not backed up. http://www.jumpingbytes.com/en/puresync.html
  11. With PureSync, you decide when it syncs, what it syncs, and how to resolve conflicts.
  12. Focus Booster does, well, just that. It is distraction prevention software. Many of us will start on a task, have our attention drawn away to our incoming emails, then take a while to get back into what we were doing. It isn’t the best way to work. Focus Booster encourages you to work in uninterrupted blocks of time, yet reminds you to check emails. If we are honest, few emails are so urgent we can’t actually work for 50 minutes without reading them. There are desktop and online versions. http://www.focusboosterapp.com/.
  13. HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows. If you need to convert videos from one format to another, this free tool can prove invaluable. http://handbrake.fr/
  14. Hipmunk.com is a new flight-search site that eliminates all of the clutter – and ads – of other flight search sites. The flight information is visualized all on one screen, with prices on the vertical axis and flight times on the horizontal axis. There’s a filter to filter out early morning departures, red-eyes, etc., and even an “Agony” scale that ranks flights based on a combination of price, flight duration and number of stops.
  15. You can also use Hipmunk.com to find hotels. Hotels can be sorted by price, reviews, or “Ecstasy” - a combination of price, reviews and amenities. You can also filter by amenity, or select an overlay to see the density of food, shopping, tourism, etc. near the hotel.
  16. TripIt is a free tool that allows you to organize all of your travel itineraries online in one place, which you can access from a variety of devices. You can either forward your travel confirmation emails for flights, hotels, etc. to plans@tripit.com or set your account to automatically pull confirmation details from more than 1,000 travel booking sites. It displays all of your booking information in one master itinerary that you can easily share, print or edit. TripIt also fills in details like weather, maps and online check-in links.Your itinerary can be accessed through the standard website, free mobile apps for Android, iPhone or BlackBerry, or the mobile website.
  17. More views of TripIt.
  18. Read It Later is a Firefox plug-in that allows you save pages on your computer or phone to read later – even without an Internet connection. It adds a button to your browser’s address bar. Clicking the icon automatically adds the page to your reading list in one click. Create an account to keep one reading list across multiple computers and phones. If you want to read on the plane or train, let Read It Later download your pages before you go offline.
  19. For a no-fuss way to save articles or web pages you want to read offline later, PDFMyURL.com is as easy as it gets. Just plug the web address in, and the page converts to a PDF you can save and later. There’s also a bookmarklet you can drag to your browser’s toolbar so you don’t even need to browse out to the website to create a PDF.
  20. With PartyChat, you can create simple chat rooms to chat with multiple co-workers all at once. Everyone needs to have a Google account (Gmail, Google docs, Google Talk, etc.) but PartyChat works with whatever IM client you use already (Google Talk, Trillian, Pidgin, etc.) Just sign in to PartyChat.com using your Gmail, give your chat room a name, and invite people to join you. Any instant messages sent to [groupname]@partychapp.appspotchat.com will go to everyone in the group.
  21. Tips to get the most of your laptop battery if you don’t have access to an outlet.
  22. Taxi Magic is a free website, text messaging service and mobile app that allows you hail a cab virtually. You can book a cab, track its location and progress on a map, charge the cab to a credit card if desired, and receive a receipt by email. Its provider network covers about 35 major cities in the US.
  23. Parkopeida is just what it sounds like: the Wikipedia of parking. You can the web site or app versions to find parking from your current location or by entering an address. It shows garages, meters and private parking, as well as hours and rates.
  24. Google Maps is the gold standard of mapping tools, but there’s a lot to like about Bing Maps. In Bing Maps, the map designs are simpler and not over-crowded, and all of the handy features you’ve come to expect – like sending the map to your email or phone, or getting directions - are within one click. Bing’s answer to Google Street View, Streetside, is also impressive. The pictures are clearer, with a higher level of detail than Google Maps.
  25. Bing also has a bird’s eye view mode. Unlike the top-down view captured by satellite, bird’s eye view images are taken from 45 degree angles, which gives you more depth perception for buildings and landmarks. Bing is also handy for searching hotels. The detailed view of a hotel has information about average rates, check-in times and nearby amenities. You can even make a booking right from the map.
  26. Xpenser is a free tool that makes it easy to record expenses through painless means – email, your web browser, text/SMS, IM, voice and even Twitter. It is available for the web and as a mobile app for iPhone, Android and Blackberry. (The mobile apps range from $2-$3.) If your phone has a camera, you can email a receipt image as an attachment that is filed with the expense. Through the online interface you can easily export your expense reports to Excel, Quicken and other programs.
  27. 1. Everyman IT. Everyman IT provides straightforward video overviews of technology topics. Many technology webinars and videos come from vendors and often only tell you enough to get interested in the topic, not don’t provide any sort of comprehensive overview Everyman IT provides more detailed sessions that are very accessible - Managers or Advocates would understand them.Their lesson on Cloud Computing and Virtualization is the best overview I’ve seen on that topic – it’s probably essential viewing for anyone involved in IT decision-making.
  28. 2. Pamela for Skype. Weird name, cool product. Pamela is a Skype extension that allows users to record audio and video from a Skype presentation. Lots of times in legal aid, there’s a need to record webinars and presentations. This is pretty easy to do if you use GoToMeeting, but more legal aid programs are using Skype because of the video conferencing component. The Pamela tool allows you to record audio with the free version. If you want to do full video recording, you do have to pay $XX.XX.
  29. 3. PrintFriendly.com – PrintFriedly creates a printer friendly version of any web page. It automatically deletes ads, weird formatting, and other things you don’t want to see when you print material out from the web. It also allows you to easily remove images, charts, and paragraphs before you print out material. They also have a plug-in that you can add to your browser so that creating a printer-friendly version of a web page is even easier.
  30. The PrintFriendly editor. You can even change font size.
  31. 4. Google Site Registration – Before of LSCD.
  32. After of LSCD. Placeholder. visits in 2010 grew to more than 461,000  viewing 3.5 million pages of legal information over 2009 usage data--377,000 visits viewing 2.2 million pages.
  33. 5. http://bit.ly/gek6Xi – Non-Profit Guide to Internet Marketing
  34. 6. SecuniaMore info: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1JPuqH/www.elithecomputerguy.com/2011/03/18/secunia-personal-software-inspector-updates-all-patches-for-your-pc-automatically/The Secunia PSI is a free security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Attacks exploiting vulnerable programs and plug-ins aren't necessarily blocked by traditional anti-virus and are therefore increasingly "popular" among criminal hackers. A lot of high profile attacks have come from these vulnerabilities. The only solution to block these kind of attacks is to apply security updates, commonly referred to as patches. Patches are offered free-of-charge by most software vendors, however, finding all these patches is a tedious and time consuming task. Secunia PSI automates this and alerts you when your programs and plug-ins require updating to stay secure.
  35. 7. http://www.simplecertifiedmail.com/ - Lots of sites have tried to simplified standard mail, but many have found places like stamp.com too cumbersome altogether. But for certified mail, which is more time consuming than putting stamps on envelopes, SimpleCertifiedMail.com (http://SimpleCertifiedMail.com) is getting positive reviews from the legal field. For more info, see http://www.theconnectedlawyer.com/archives/704
  36. 8. LinkedIn Skills. Take your LinkedIn profile beyond a passive online resume. Add skills to your LinkedIn profile – learn what other skills people in your field have developed.
  37. 9. For fun (but very useful) Gate Guru App: Currently just for iPhone, but the developer has stated it’s coming to Android very soon. Once you select an airport – though it usually can tell which airport you’re at -- the app allows you to select a particular terminal or concourse and then shows you all of the establishments at that concourse.  You can filter the list to only display food options, shops or services.  Each entry displays the name, category and location so you know where in the concourse to find the establishment.
  38. 10. For fun (and relaxation): Do Nothing for 2 Minutes. Pretty self-explanatory. Turn you speakers on to enjoy the waves.
  39. Don’t touch that keyboard!

  46. Identify fuzzy duplicate rows within a single table or to fuzzy join similar rows between two different tables. The matching is robust enough to match a wide variety of errors including spelling mistakes, abbreviations, synonyms, and added or missing data.
