Lt Audie L. Murphy
Retype the title of your paper here, leaving the Title style For over hundreds of years men have lost their lives fighting for their country and what they
believe in. Everyday, the battle ground is enhanced as technology proves to become more hi–tech throughout the many years of war known to man.
Back in WWII, service members were not so reluctant to have the same luxuries as we do today during war. The least to say, a legend at his best, LT.
Audie L. Murphy fought alongside with the 3rd Infantry Division with only one objective in mind. This battle, The One–Man Stand at Holtzwihr, is a
memory to be told and a legend to be lived on. First Lt Audie L. Murphy of Company B, 15th Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division was in for the fight
of his life on a cold and frigid January day in 1945. The role in this offensive for the Division was to advance near Bois de Riedwihr. This was a
large stretch of forest between the villages of Riedwihr and Holtzwihr. Outnumbered by a couple hundred Germans and tanks, Lt Murphy put his life
ahead of the wellbeing of his men to fend off the offensive attack by the German forces. This battle depicts exactly what it means in regards to
Selfless Service and Personal Courage. It was a cold and frigid January afternoon in 1945 in the outskirts of Holtzwihr. Company B decimated with

Technological advances throughout the world leave countries fighting for the top spot. Although a plane crash ended the life of LT. Audie L. Murphy,
his spirit and legacy lives on today. Establishments being named after him would only be the least to say. Among the most highest clubs in theUnited
States Army falls the Audie Muprhy Club. To be inducted into this club is only of the most highest respect from others. Even though many men had

Life of Audie Leon Murphy
Audie L. Murphy Audie Leon Murphy was born on June 20, 1924 near Kingston, Texas, one of twelve children born to Emmett Berry Murphy and
Josie Bell (Killian) Murphy (Simpson, n.d.). The Murphy family was a group of poor sharecroppers of Irish descent and Audie had to begin
working at an early age to help support his family. Audie attended grade school in Celeste, Texas until the age of twelve, when his father abandoned
the family in 1936. With less than a fifth grade education, Murphy left school and went to work full time as a farm laborer, hunter, store clerk and
gas station attendant to support his family (Smith, 1960, p. 1). Audie might have lived the rest of his life as a lower income civilian if the Japanese
had not bombed Pearl Harbor. The December 7, 1941 sneak attack on Pearl Harbor called forth mass–enlistment in every branch of the Armed Forces
by young Americans; Audie Murphy was among them. Audie applied to the U.S. Army and in June 1942 was enlisted into the 3rd Infantry Division–
15th Regiment. During the course of World War II, Audie served in seven major campaigns, was promoted from Private to First Lieutenant, and
was received 24 decorations, including the Medal of Honor, which he earned on January 26, 1945. His actions in earning the Medal of Honor were by

Lieutenant General Saint And His Command Sergeants
In early 1986, Lieutenant General Saint and his Command Sergeants Major, Command Sergeants Major Horvath, identified the need to establish an
elite organization to recognize stellar Non–Commissioned Officers. These Non–Commissioned Officers are those who have demonstrated excellence
in performance and leadership abilities that resemble those of other influential NCO's. A special group that needed a figure head that all members could
emulate and strive to act in accordance with. This figure head could be none other than Sergeant Audie Murphy.
The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club originated at Fort Hood, Texas by a group of dedicated officers, enlisted, and civilians; the most notable of which
were the two aforementioned leaders, their awards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The support of the club has given back to all areas of influence including schools, cemeteries, businesses, and programs such as the Warrior Outreach.
The club has been involved with many outstanding events such as feeding the homeless; providing gifts for under privileged kids; partnering with
local schools to help establish a positive foundation for the youth through interaction; clearing and cleaning overgrown cemeteries with the
preservation society; and assisting with the restoration of homes belonging to citizens in the area. One of the most interesting things that the club
does that should never go unnoticed is empowering and providing great leaders with an outlet to be able to do these amazing things. Individuals will
struggle to find a way to make a difference in the community, but when like minded individuals come together the opportunities seem to present
themselves in abundance. This is why I want to become a member of the SAMC. To be able to give back to the community that has given so much
for its veterans. To be able to surround myself with motivated, dedicated, and intellectual leaders would allow my passions and desires to be fulfilled. I
earned the Meritorious Outstanding Volunteer Medal by putting the welfare and needs of others before my own, both in country and abroad. Being a

Audie Murphy As A Transformational Leader
As per Joseph W. Weiss, PhD We need to understand the meaning of these two terms, Transactional leader and Transformational leader they can be
consider similar but very different all by itself on any one person.
Transactional leader :In contrast to a transformational leader, a leader who performs more routine but essential leadership and managerial tasks.
Transformational leader: A leader, who influences, inspires, mobilizes, and transforms followers to achieve organizational goals beyond their
self–interests throughout military history
Audie Murphy was recognized for his achievements as a leader in the military services. In today standards for the American soldiers he was the one
soldier that was most decorated, but for
What? He was a leader at home by taking care of his family at a very young age, so we say what he is a Transformational leader or a Transactional

Audie Murphy: to Hell and Back Book Report Essay
OC Person, Darius J. 3 June 2012 Audie Murphy: To Hell and Back Book Report Lt. Audie L. Murphy's name stands as one of the most prominent
in American military history. He was a figurehead of leadership and the epitome of the seven Army Values (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless
Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage). He was a model for every soldier to follow, one that overcame every odd that was ever against
him and rose to conquer every challenge. In his personal memoir "To Hell and Back", he expressed a very personal view of what it takes to embody
these characteristics which would eventually encourage anyone who reads it. In the next few paragraphs I will expound on his leadership and analyze

Born Audie Leon Murphy to Emmet Berry Murphy and Josie Bell in the summer of June 20, 1924, Lt. Murphy was the sixth of twelve children
and the oldest son. His father abandoned them in 1936, leaving Lt. Murphy the responsibility of dropping out of school in the 5th grade to provide
for his family, doing odd jobs. From the days of his youth he was being molded into a leader, having to lead a family by providing food and income
from this day on. Wanting to make a difference and provide for his family and being inspired by his veteran uncle he decided to enlist into the
military. Of course he was met with opposition, being only 5'5" and 110 lbs with a "baby face" he had already been turned down by the Marines, the
Navy and the Army Paratroopers. But this resilient, persistent young leader with a "never quit mentality" would not take no for an answer. In June of
1942 on his 17th birthday, he handed in a document signed by his older sister stating that he was old enough to enlist into the Army. In this back–story
there is a foundation to leadership that I think most people would miss, he had a purpose. Throughout this book you can hear an endearing love for
his mother, who died in 1941, which I believe would motivate him to fight day in and day out. Several characters are introduced throughout this
memoir, some were very close friends others he did not care too much for, but he fought for all of them the same; as soldiers. Having performed his

Audie Murphy "August, 1944. Beach landing south of France. Suddenly the day is ripped apart by the sound of machine gun fire; you and your

By taking the lead and directing the assault on the machine gun nest from the point position, Sgt Murphy provided a focus point for his men to rise to
the occasion and press forward when they had little, to no motivation to continue. At this point in time, this type of leadership trait was visionary in
respect to how military leaders were trained to behave thus successfully removing the status quo. We can also see that when applying the concept of
Emotional Flexibility in regards to the Three Elements of Adaptability (BCEE, 2014b, p. 6–7), Sgt Murphy was able to control not only his own
emotions in regards to fear, apprehension, and concern. But he was able to assess his men's emotional situation and concentrate them on the act of
completing the mission. In a passage from Audie Murphy's Autobiography, To Hell and Back, "For the first time in the war, I refuse to accept facts.
While Brandon grows cold beneath my hand, I keep telling myself, 'He is not dead. He can't be dead, because if he is dead, the war is all wrong;
and Brandon has died in vain.'" (A. Murphy, 1949, p. 177). It was at this point when Audie Murphy moved forward to finish the attack on the German
machine gun nest. Audie Murphy suppressed his urge of fear in order to adapt to the situation at hand. If he had not adapted to this situation, and been

Audie Murphys Legend
The first sentence of Audie Murphy's biography reads, "Audie Leon Murphy was a legend in his own time" ("Sergeant Audie Murphy Award," 2015),
a seemingly fitting introduction for one of the bravest combat soldiers in our nation's history. Never the less, I believe it simply does not do him the
justice he earned. Audie Murphy was not just a legend in his own time; he is a legend today, and remains a legend of the future. Many people
recognize his famed name and know him to be a war hero. Nevertheless, most are not fully educated on the "legend" that was, is, and always will be
Audie Murphy. I, for one, intend to portray this American hero's story to as many people as possible. Audie Leon Murphy set the standard of what

He became the Commanding Officer of "B" Company, 15th Infantry Regiment. They were facing an immense German fighting force comprised of
two companies of men and six tanks, when one of Murphy's tank destroyers caught fire from enemy munitions. He ordered his men to move back
into the woods, whilst he stayed forward fighting and directing artillery fire. "With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, Lieutenant Murphy
climbed on the burning tank destroyer which was in danger of blowing up any instant and employed its .50 caliber machine gun against the
enemy" (Simpson, 1982, p. 134). He was wounded once again, but not before killing or wounding about 50 Germans. Despite enemies making it
to within ten yards of him, he was able to make it back to his company. He refused medical treatment, regrouped his men, and continued to move
towards the enemy. His actions earned him the nation's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor. In all, Audie Murphy earned 33 United States
military medals and decorations over the course of the war, as well as decorations from France and Belgium. Audie Murphy spent three long years
fighting World War II before he was finally able to return home. He served in varying capacities and components until his retirement in 1969, at
which time he held the rank of Major. However, just because the war had ended did not mean that Audie's legendary story was over. Audie took his

When senior leaders in the United States Army get together with their subordinate soldiers and discuss potential and the importance of always being
prepared for your mission, traditionally there is one soldier that is always brought up in the conversation. His name is Audie Murphy. He was a man
so small that when he first attempted to enlist, the Marine Corps turned him away because he was too small. By the time he would finish his military
career, he would be one of the most decorated war heroes in the history of the United States military, be battlefield promoted from enlisted to the officer

In his self entitled book, To Hell and Back, Audie Murphy shed a little light on how his leadership looked at him early on in his career at the
beginning of the war: "My company commander, looking at my thin frame and cursed baby face, decides that the front is no place for me. He has
me transferred to headquarters to serve as a runner. I should be grateful, but I am NOT. I am constantly sneaking off with patrols and scouting
parties. The company commander finally calls me to the carpet. "I hear you can't stay away from the front Murphy". "Yes sir" I replied. "What's
wrong with you? You want to get killed?". "No sir". "Now I'm going to do myself a favor. I'm putting you back in the lines and you'll stay there until
you're so sick of action you want to vomit". (2)
Audie Murphy, never one to back down from the challenge took his duties seriously and understood that the cost of unpreparedness would lead to
certain death on the battlefield during the war and because he was so underestimated there was always a chip on his shoulder. After returning to the
front line he became very ill and a major saw him on the side of the road puking. The major told him that he needed to go and see a medic. Audie
Murphy told him that he would, but instead returned to his men and after a week he finally passed out and woke up in the aid station. By the time
Audie Murphy was 19, he would be a second lieutenant on the front lines in France fighting off a company

Why Is Audie Murphy Considered A Modern Day Hero
There were many war heroes in WW2 but there is one that stands out the most from the Allied invasion of Sicily to D–day he served his country. Audie
murphy made a lasting impression on the world with everything that he did in his 18 month career. With all his medals that he won and war stories it's
no surprise that some consider the greatest american soldier of all time. Audie Murphy should be considered a modern day hero.
First of all Audie Murphy is one of the most recognized WW2 names because of his courageous. He shows courageousness by defeating many opposing
forces during the war and afterwards."In an engagement with German infantry reinforced with tanks, Murphy ordered his men to the safety of trees to

He inspired a lot of people to good things and a lot in his name that were dedicated. "As a result of legislation introduced by U.S. Congressman Olin
Teague five months after Murphy's death in 1971, the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio, now a part of the South Texas
Veterans Health Care System, was dedicated in 1973"(american.history). As a result of all the good that he did for the war the built a VA hospital
in his name. This is amazing because, if you ask any veteran who Mr. murphy is they all know. All because of stuff like this also that kids are
learning about his life also. Audie never let the thought of others go over his head he always put others thought before his own. In an effort to draw
attention to the problems of returning Korean War and Vietnam War veterans, Murphy spoke out candidly about his own problems with posttraumatic
stress disorder"(nashua telegraph). Even with his own battles with PTSD he still made it a priority to talk to people about it and make awareness for
it. He helped millions of people struggling with PTSD get help and be treated.
Audie murphy is the most decorated soldier of all time and of WW2. Yet not many people know who he is. He shows many valued traits in a soldier
such as a leader, an inspiration, he's fearless, and many more. Audie Murphy should be considered a modern day hero. He was an amazing person and

Many soldiers lost their lives, but they were few soldiers that fought with the valor of Audie Murphy. In January 1945, German forces attacked
Company B, 15th Regiment, 3rd infantry division in Holtzwihr. Approximately 250 German soldiers were heading towards the Bois de Reidwihr
which they had planned to seize. The Americans felt unprepared when they discovered the presence of the German forces, so they decided to fall
back. However, Audie Murphy decided to move forward and fight. He drew a .50 caliber and started shooting Germans as he believed that German
advancements in this area needed to be stopped at all costs. This German infantryman were as close as 10 yards from Lieutenant Murphy, but he kept
shooting at German infantry bodies. The bravery Murphy presented at Holtzwihr earned him the medal of honor.
c. Murphy's valor came to a test when his battalion headed to Anzio. The Germans received an unexpected advantage because of a missed landing of
American troops. The Germans moved 125,000 troops to position and attacked allied soldiers with artillery. Their commander got wounded, but Audie
Murphy stepped up to lead his company during the enemies heavy fire. In recognition of his leadership efforts, Murphy got promoted to platoon leader
and later earned a Bronze star in March 1994 for destroying a German tank on his own. He contributed significantly to several operations during the

The Greatest Heroes Of The War
Born on June 20th of 1925 to a family of poor sharecroppers in small town Texas, Audie Leon Murphy had no idea he would soon be leaving for the
deadliest war to ever plague the Earth. Fresh out of the horrors of the First World War, few would have thought that yet another, deadlier war was on
the horizon. Even fewer would've thought that a farm boy from Texas would become one of the greatest heroes of the war.
Audie Murphy was by all accounts a nobody. He and his family lived a quiet life, sticking to themselves and their farms. A young Murphy would
simply help outside with the farm work, almost never wanting to be indoors. Once the war broke out, Murphy felt called to serve his country. He
tried on several occasions to enlist in the Armed Forces underage as he was not of legal age to enlist. With the help of his sister, Corrine, he
successfully enlisted in the military at the age of 17. He was given basic training, which he completed with ease.
Audie Murphy's first war experience was in North Africa during the Allied offensive to remove Axis forces from the top of Africa. North Africa was
a very important strategic point for both forces. If the Allies were successful in their push for control, it would be a very important starting point for an
invasion of Fascist Italy, and ultimately Nazi Germany. Murphy's unit, however, saw no combat in North Africa due to the expulsion of Axis Forces
from their final African foothold of Tunisia. Murphy was then sent to the island of

Analysis Of The Poem ' I Hell And Back '
Audie Murphy, one of the most well–recognized and most decorated soldiers of the United States Army of World War II, participated in two battles
which earned him respect and awards. The first, his efforts in taking Yellow Beach of southern France, earned him the Distinguished Service Cross.
The second, in a battle outside of Holtzwihr, France, earned him the Medal of Honor. Not only are these events well documented for official records,
they appear in his "autobiography" To Hell and Back, ghostwritten by David "Spec" McClure with Murphy providing details, along with various
sources which include family scrapbooks, the accounts of soldiers who served with Murphy which they gave for his medal citations, and a recently

This account, so far, squares with an account by Staff Sergeant Norman Hollen, also of Company B. Not mentioned in Hollen's account was Murphy's
killing of two Germans who he stumbled across before finding the light machine–gun, a fact which both Smith's and Graham's accounts mention .
The accounts do seem to differ in that Murphy describes machine gun fire being responsible for Tipton's death while Hollen suggests it was a sniper .
Graham supports Murphy's assertion of machine gun fire being the cause of Tipton's death, as he places the blame not on a sniper in the house, but on
the machine gun nest which Murphy storms . Meanwhile, David Smith, writer of The Price of Valor, sides with Hollen, claiming a single sniper shot
was responsible for Tipton's death. Two schools of thought appeared in the literature about what occurred and there seems no way of reconciling them.
However, Smith claims that Murphy said that it was a sniper, not a machine gun, contradicting the narrative of To Hell and Back.
Murphy's and Graham's accounts seem to show that he did not use his carbine, while Hollen and Smith both claim that Murphy killed the two
Germans who had approached with the flag of surrender with his carbine. Murphy, Smith, and Graham all agree that Murphy carried a German
machine gun which he had captured "like a BAR" and fired it from the hip as he proceeded up the hill. This detail wasn't mentioned by Hollen, who

Leadership Vs. Roman's Legacy
I have had 20 leaders during in my years in the Army. Some good and some bad, but none have left a lasting legacy that I would want to emulate.
None until spring 2014, when CSM Roman took over as my Battalion Command Sergeant Major and changed my outlook on what a true expert
and professional is supposed to exemplify. Due to my interaction with him, I have decided that CSM Gregory Roman is my leader of influence. If
there were more leaders like CSM Roman, then the Army as we know it would be in a much better position. My first interaction with CSM Roman
was very brief, not to mention very embarrassing. I was attending a NCO of the Quarter board just before he took over responsibility of my
battalion. I wanted to leave a lasting impression on him, but that was not the way I wanted. I wanted him to see a hard working Staff Sergeant
who was confident and knowledgeable. Needless to say, I failed miserably. The look on his face when I walked out of that room is an image that
I'll never forget. A few days passed before our next encounter. He pulled me aside, spoke to me about my performance, and told me "I know you can
do better than that". Here is a man who has only seen me once and has well over 100 NCOs in his battalion, yet remembered my face after only being
in the battalion a week. His genuine concern... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

across. I brought up my friend during conversation with CSM Roman and he responded with "Oh yeah I remember him. He was just like you". That
alone showed me how he has impacted the Army and the NCO corps. Two guys that he had no idea knew each other, yet he saw similar qualities

This Is Audie Murphy Essay
This is Audie Murphy's life story. At the tender age of 12, he becomes the head of the family after his father deserts them. He joins the army at the
age of 18 and through the course of the war is decorated for valor nine times thus becoming the most decorated combat soldier in World War II.
Audie does one of the bravest acts any soldier ever did during the war. He climbs aboard a burning tank destroyer and single handedly keeps the
enemy from advancing on his position. He spends almost an hour on top of the tank destroyer until his ammunition is exhausted. Seconds later after
climbing off the tank destroyer, it explodes. For this action, Audie receives the Medal of Honor.

Lt Audie L. Murphy

  • 1. Lt Audie L. Murphy Retype the title of your paper here, leaving the Title style For over hundreds of years men have lost their lives fighting for their country and what they believe in. This battle, The One–Man Stand at Holtzwihr, is a memory to be told and a legend to be lived on. First Lt Audie L. Murphy of Company B, 15th Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division was in for the fight of his life on a cold and frigid January day in 1945. The role in this offensive for the Division was to advance near Bois de Riedwihr. This was a large stretch of forest between the villages of Riedwihr and Holtzwihr. Outnumbered by a couple hundred Germans and tanks, Lt Murphy put his life ahead of the wellbeing of his men to fend off the offensive attack by the German forces. This battle depicts exactly what it means in regards to Selfless Service and Personal Courage. It was a cold and frigid January afternoon in 1945 in the outskirts of Holtzwihr. Company B decimated with little men left alive, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Technological advances throughout the world leave countries fighting for the top spot. • 2. Life of Audie Leon Murphy Audie L. Murphy Audie Leon Murphy was born on June 20, 1924 near Kingston, Texas, one of twelve children born to Emmett Berry Murphy and Josie Bell (Killian) Murphy (Simpson, n.d.). The Murphy family was a group of poor sharecroppers of Irish descent and Audie had to begin working at an early age to help support his family. Audie attended grade school in Celeste, Texas until the age of twelve, when his father abandoned the family in 1936. With less than a fifth grade education, Murphy left school and went to work full time as a farm laborer, hunter, store clerk and gas station attendant to support his family (Smith, 1960, p. 1). Audie might have lived the rest of his life as a lower income civilian if the Japanese had not bombed Pearl Harbor. The December 7, 1941 sneak attack on Pearl Harbor called forth mass–enlistment in every branch of the Armed Forces by young Americans; Audie Murphy was among them. Audie applied to the U.S. Army and in June 1942 was enlisted into the 3rd Infantry Division– 15th Regiment. During the course of World War II, Audie served in seven major campaigns, was promoted from Private to First Lieutenant, and was received 24 decorations, including the Medal of Honor, which he earned on January 26, 1945. His actions in earning the Medal of Honor were by the Secretary of War as ""В¦indomitable courage and"В¦refusal to give an inch of ground" (U. S. Secretary of War, 1945), and more pointedly described by an eyewitness as ""В¦the greatest display of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lieutenant General Saint And His Command Sergeants In early 1986, Lieutenant General Saint and his Command Sergeants Major, Command Sergeants Major Horvath, identified the need to establish an elite organization to recognize stellar Non–Commissioned Officers. These Non–Commissioned Officers are those who have demonstrated excellence in performance and leadership abilities that resemble those of other influential NCO's. A special group that needed a figure head that all members could emulate and strive to act in accordance with. This figure head could be none other than Sergeant Audie Murphy. The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club originated at Fort Hood, Texas by a group of dedicated officers, enlisted, and civilians; the most notable of which were the two aforementioned leaders, their awards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The support of the club has given back to all areas of influence including schools, cemeteries, businesses, and programs such as the Warrior Outreach. The club has been involved with many outstanding events such as feeding the homeless; providing gifts for under privileged kids; partnering with local schools to help establish a positive foundation for the youth through interaction; clearing and cleaning overgrown cemeteries with the preservation society; and assisting with the restoration of homes belonging to citizens in the area. One of the most interesting things that the club does that should never go unnoticed is empowering and providing great leaders with an outlet to be able to do these amazing things. Individuals will struggle to find a way to make a difference in the community, but when like minded individuals come together the opportunities seem to present themselves in abundance. This is why I want to become a member of the SAMC. To be able to give back to the community that has given so much for its veterans. To be able to surround myself with motivated, dedicated, and intellectual leaders would allow my passions and desires to be fulfilled. I earned the Meritorious Outstanding Volunteer Medal by putting the welfare and needs of others before my own, both in country and abroad. Being a part of these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Murphy's name stands as one of the most prominent in American military history. He was a figurehead of leadership and the epitome of the seven Army Values (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage). He was a model for every soldier to follow, one that overcame every odd that was ever against him and rose to conquer every challenge. In his personal memoir "To Hell and Back", he expressed a very personal view of what it takes to embody these characteristics which would eventually encourage anyone who reads it. Born Audie Leon Murphy to Emmet Berry Murphy and Josie Bell in the summer of June 20, 1924, Lt. Murphy was the sixth of twelve children and the oldest son. His father abandoned them in 1936, leaving Lt. Murphy the responsibility of dropping out of school in the 5th grade to provide for his family, doing odd jobs. From the days of his youth he was being molded into a leader, having to lead a family by providing food and income from this day on. Wanting to make a difference and provide for his family and being inspired by his veteran uncle he decided to enlist into the military. Of course he was met with opposition, being only 5'5" and 110 lbs with a "baby face" he had already been turned down by the Marines, the Navy and the Army Paratroopers. But this resilient, persistent young leader with a "never quit mentality" would not take no for an answer. In June of 1942 on his 17th birthday, he handed in a document signed by his older sister stating that he was old enough to enlist into the Army. In this back–story there is a foundation to leadership that I think most people would miss, he had a purpose. Throughout this book you can hear an endearing love for his mother, who died in 1941, which I believe would motivate him to fight day in and day out. Several characters are introduced throughout this memoir, some were very close friends others he did not care too much for, but he fought for all of them the same; as soldiers. By taking the lead and directing the assault on the machine gun nest from the point position, Sgt Murphy provided a focus point for his men to rise to the occasion and press forward when they had little, to no motivation to continue. At this point in time, this type of leadership trait was visionary in respect to how military leaders were trained to behave thus successfully removing the status quo. We can also see that when applying the concept of Emotional Flexibility in regards to the Three Elements of Adaptability (BCEE, 2014b, p. 6–7), Sgt Murphy was able to control not only his own emotions in regards to fear, apprehension, and concern. But he was able to assess his men's emotional situation and concentrate them on the act of completing the mission. In a passage from Audie Murphy's Autobiography, To Hell and Back, "For the first time in the war, I refuse to accept facts. While Brandon grows cold beneath my hand, I keep telling myself, 'He is not dead. He can't be dead, because if he is dead, the war is all wrong; and Brandon has died in vain.'" (A. Murphy, 1949, p. 177). It was at this point when Audie Murphy moved forward to finish the attack on the German machine gun nest. • 8. Audie Murphys Legend The first sentence of Audie Murphy's biography reads, "Audie Leon Murphy was a legend in his own time" ("Sergeant Audie Murphy Award," 2015), a seemingly fitting introduction for one of the bravest combat soldiers in our nation's history. Never the less, I believe it simply does not do him the justice he earned. Audie Murphy was not just a legend in his own time; he is a legend today, and remains a legend of the future. Many people recognize his famed name and know him to be a war hero. Nevertheless, most are not fully educated on the "legend" that was, is, and always will be Audie Murphy. They were facing an immense German fighting force comprised of two companies of men and six tanks, when one of Murphy's tank destroyers caught fire from enemy munitions. He ordered his men to move back into the woods, whilst he stayed forward fighting and directing artillery fire. "With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, Lieutenant Murphy climbed on the burning tank destroyer which was in danger of blowing up any instant and employed its .50 caliber machine gun against the enemy" (Simpson, 1982, p. 134). He was wounded once again, but not before killing or wounding about 50 Germans. Despite enemies making it to within ten yards of him, he was able to make it back to his company. He refused medical treatment, regrouped his men, and continued to move towards the enemy. His actions earned him the nation's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor. In all, Audie Murphy earned 33 United States military medals and decorations over the course of the war, as well as decorations from France and Belgium. Audie Murphy spent three long years fighting World War II before he was finally able to return home. Harvey 2 In his self entitled book, To Hell and Back, Audie Murphy shed a little light on how his leadership looked at him early on in his career at the beginning of the war: "My company commander, looking at my thin frame and cursed baby face, decides that the front is no place for me. He has me transferred to headquarters to serve as a runner. I should be grateful, but I am NOT. I am constantly sneaking off with patrols and scouting parties. The company commander finally calls me to the carpet. "I hear you can't stay away from the front Murphy". "Yes sir" I replied. "What's wrong with you? You want to get killed?". "No sir". "Now I'm going to do myself a favor. I'm putting you back in the lines and you'll stay there until you're so sick of action you want to vomit". (2) Audie Murphy, never one to back down from the challenge took his duties seriously and understood that the cost of unpreparedness would lead to certain death on the battlefield during the war and because he was so underestimated there was always a chip on his shoulder. After returning to the front line he became very ill and a major saw him on the side of the road puking. The major told him that he needed to go and see a medic. Audie Murphy told him that he would, but instead returned to his men and after a week he finally passed out and woke up in the aid station. • 14. The Greatest Heroes Of The War Born on June 20th of 1925 to a family of poor sharecroppers in small town Texas, Audie Leon Murphy had no idea he would soon be leaving for the deadliest war to ever plague the Earth. Fresh out of the horrors of the First World War, few would have thought that yet another, deadlier war was on the horizon. Even fewer would've thought that a farm boy from Texas would become one of the greatest heroes of the war. Audie Murphy was by all accounts a nobody. He and his family lived a quiet life, sticking to themselves and their farms. A young Murphy would simply help outside with the farm work, almost never wanting to be indoors. Once the war broke out, Murphy felt called to serve his country. He tried on several occasions to enlist in the Armed Forces underage as he was not of legal age to enlist. With the help of his sister, Corrine, he successfully enlisted in the military at the age of 17. He was given basic training, which he completed with ease. Audie Murphy's first war experience was in North Africa during the Allied offensive to remove Axis forces from the top of Africa. North Africa was a very important strategic point for both forces. If the Allies were successful in their push for control, it would be a very important starting point for an invasion of Fascist Italy, and ultimately Nazi Germany. Murphy's unit, however, saw no combat in North Africa due to the expulsion of Axis Forces from their final African foothold of Tunisia. Murphy was then sent to the island of ... • 15. Analysis Of The Poem ' I Hell And Back ' Audie Murphy, one of the most well–recognized and most decorated soldiers of the United States Army of World War II, participated in two battles which earned him respect and awards. The first, his efforts in taking Yellow Beach of southern France, earned him the Distinguished Service Cross. The second, in a battle outside of Holtzwihr, France, earned him the Medal of Honor. Not only are these events well documented for official records, they appear in his "autobiography" To Hell and Back, ghostwritten by David "Spec" McClure with Murphy providing details, along with various sources which include family scrapbooks, the accounts of soldiers who served with Murphy which they gave for his medal citations, and a recently published History of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This account, so far, squares with an account by Staff Sergeant Norman Hollen, also of Company B. Not mentioned in Hollen's account was Murphy's killing of two Germans who he stumbled across before finding the light machine–gun, a fact which both Smith's and Graham's accounts mention . The accounts do seem to differ in that Murphy describes machine gun fire being responsible for Tipton's death while Hollen suggests it was a sniper . Graham supports Murphy's assertion of machine gun fire being the cause of Tipton's death, as he places the blame not on a sniper in the house, but on the machine gun nest which Murphy storms . Meanwhile, David Smith, writer of The Price of Valor, sides with Hollen, claiming a single sniper shot was responsible for Tipton's death. Two schools of thought appeared in the literature about what occurred and there seems no way of reconciling them. However, Smith claims that Murphy said that it was a sniper, not a machine gun, contradicting the narrative of To Hell and Back. Murphy's and Graham's accounts seem to show that he did not use his carbine, while Hollen and Smith both claim that Murphy killed the two Germans who had approached with the flag of surrender with his carbine. Murphy, Smith, and Graham all agree that Murphy carried a German machine gun which he had captured "like a BAR" and fired it from the hip as he proceeded up the hill. This detail wasn't mentioned by Hollen, who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Leadership Vs. Roman's Legacy I have had 20 leaders during in my years in the Army. Some good and some bad, but none have left a lasting legacy that I would want to emulate. None until spring 2014, when CSM Roman took over as my Battalion Command Sergeant Major and changed my outlook on what a true expert and professional is supposed to exemplify. Due to my interaction with him, I have decided that CSM Gregory Roman is my leader of influence. If there were more leaders like CSM Roman, then the Army as we know it would be in a much better position. My first interaction with CSM Roman was very brief, not to mention very embarrassing. I was attending a NCO of the Quarter board just before he took over responsibility of my battalion. I wanted to leave a lasting impression on him, but that was not the way I wanted. I wanted him to see a hard working Staff Sergeant who was confident and knowledgeable. Needless to say, I failed miserably. The look on his face when I walked out of that room is an image that I'll never forget. A few days passed before our next encounter. He pulled me aside, spoke to me about my performance, and told me "I know you can do better than that". Here is a man who has only seen me once and has well over 100 NCOs in his battalion, yet remembered my face after only being in the battalion a week. His genuine concern... He said CSM Roman was the exact same way to him and the he was the best leader he had ever come across. I brought up my friend during conversation with CSM Roman and he responded with "Oh yeah I remember him. He was just like you". That alone showed me how he has impacted the Army and the NCO corps. Two guys that he had no idea knew each other, yet he saw similar qualities within them and worked with both of us to expose that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
