Integrating Life Skills into English Class

  2. Is life a game or a lesson or an opportunity? What makes you a better human being? What helps you achieve success? What makes you happier?
  3. Is life a game or a lesson or an opportunity? Tying your shoe laces, swimming, driving a car and using a computer are, for most people, useful life skills. Broadly speaking, the term ‘life skills’ is usually used for any of the skills needed to deal well and effectively with the challenges of life. The definition extends into consumer education, environmental education, peace education or education for development, livelihood and income generation, among others. In short, life skills empower young people to take positive action to protect themselves and promote health and positive social relationships.

Image Management Life skill has been classified into three broad categories: • Thinking skills: Thinking skills are the skill that enhances the logical faculty of the brain using an analytical ability, thinking creatively and critically, and developing problem-solving skills and improving decision-making abilities. • Social skills: Social skills include interpersonal skills, communication skills, leadership skills, management skills, advocacy skills, co-operation and team building skills, etc. • Emotional skills: Emotional skills, involves, knowing and being comfortable with oneself. Thus, self– management, including managing/coping with feelings, emotions, stress and resisting peer and family pressure. ccc despice
  5. For example, if an individual recognizes that he procrastinates a lot and due to this his efficiencies do not get reflected, he can work on better time management.
  6. It also helps us to evaluate the influence of decisions taken on our own values and values of people who are near to us. Adolescents are most of the time influenced by media and peers. This skill can assist them to assess the pros and cons of the situation and help them to evaluate their actions.

  9. Where is the most fertile ground in the world? Understanding others’ emotional states and perspectives. It helps in understanding other peoples’ concerns and reactions to a given situation. Thus, empathizing with others helps not only in having a balanced understanding of the behaviour and reactions of an individual but also facilitates a deeper insight into human behaviour. It is an ability to imagine and understand what life is like for another person, even in a situation that you may not be familiar with. It is important for an adolescent to develop positive outlook towards others and feeling of cooperation, which is necessary for preparing the foundation for adulthood.

  12. selecting a learning method that guide teacher to gradually develop communicative competence and simultaneously develop life skills. School curriculum should incorporate strategies that require higher-level thinking skills such as inference, prediction, analysis and critical thinking. With the use of critical thinking strategies, students develop skills such as reasoning, questioning and investigating, observing and describing, comparing and connecting, finding complexity, and exploring viewpoints. Problem solving is an important element of all content areas. Placing more responsibilities on students as they mature is important. These responsibilities include leadership roles in school, student voice, higher-level thinking skills and greater control over personal and academic goal setting.

Practicing listening and communication skills. Activity and Role Plays: Becoming active and participative. Increasing empathy for others and their point of view. Group Work: Maximizing student input. Allowing students interactions. Enhancing team building and team work. Educational Games: Promoting fun and active learning. Using of knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Allowing assumptions and abilities in a positive environment. Case Studies: Giving the chance, to analyze, explore and challenge. Test different solutions. Sharing idea, new learnings. Gives insight and seeing things differently.

  15. Field work is one of the best teaching techniques. Filed work is an opportunity for learner to involve directly, and investigate the fact in real life situations. Students directly connect themselves with different types of people. They collect data. They conduct interview and have first hand life experience. Students design questions for fulfilling study and ask questions to elder member in family. Teacher helps students to prepare a set of questions. They form different group of students. A group of students meet famous person of the society. They conduct one to one session with them. Experience people share their story of struggle with students. Students learn so many life skills during this active session with good people (from different walks) of local area. Students learn different techniques to manage their emotion and passion to achieve something great in life. Students learn how to overcome from struggle having proper communication with experienced and expert people of different field.  Teacher helps students to feel real life learning experience. Teacher organizes tours for their students i.e. visiting different places, hospitals, labs, factory, bank or required places related to topics. Social work is second great opportunity for learners to learn essential life skill. It integrates different life skills i.e. decision making, interpersonal, intrapersonal, creative thinking, critical thinking etc. Students develop effective communication skill during performing several tasks in the field.
