Internal vs. External Links External links are hyperlinks that link unconnected websites together.  Examples: Links page, partner links, association links.  External linking can take away from your PageRank, but does provide value in other areas.  It’s debatable that linking out to authoritative sources can help your SEO.

The importance of relevant anchor text. Words contained in the hyperlink are important ranking factors.  These off-site factors tell the search engines what keywords should be associated with your website.  “Click Here” is most common, yet provides little guidance on what your site is about.  Use your most valuable terms as anchor text when creating backlinks.  For best results vary your anchor text and add buffer words from time-to-time.
What are “Quality” backlinks? Non-reciprocal  From high PageRank sites (high PR on linking URL)  Surrounded by relevant, on topic, content. From sites similar to yours. Links from a relevant .edu, .org, .gov and other authoritative, trusted sites – news, wikis, etc.   Relevant anchor text
Follow vs. NoFollow Enacted in late 2005. Webmasters have the choice whether to “endorse” an outbound link or not. On NoFollow, PageRank, or “link juice,” is not passed from one site to another.  Not the same for all search engines.  Most blog comments are NoFollow, most social media backlinks are NoFollow.   Recent update discounts “PageRank sculpting,” but its implications are still unclear.
