Life In The Trenches During WWI
Life in the trenches during WWI was miserable. There seem to be no words that could truly match the horrific experience, but soldiers tried to
conjure images using literature to come close to their experience. As stated in The World's History, Europe had not warfare on such a scale since the
Napoleonic wars (Spodek 664). Even watching the American Civil War from afar could not have prepared Europe and the young men that served for
the devastation WWI brought. The poems described the war as a collection of numbed men, simply waiting to die, "lines of grey, muttering faces." Men
who had joined to serve their country had now become disillusioned with the nobility of dying for their country, wondering if the suffering both in and
out of the trenches

Analysis Of Suicide In The Trenches
Suicide in the Trenches
War, a slaughter of men that has gone on for hundreds & thousands of years. One of the most gruesome wars was WW1 which lasted for 4 years, 28
Jul. 1914 – 11 Nov. 1918. In this devastating war, the total number of casualties includes about 11 million military personnel and about 7 million
civilians. Many of those soldiers were young men. The poem "Suicide in the trenches" written by Siegfried Sassoon tells what the harsh trenches had
being like and how many soldiers became depressed. Sassoon was an officer who earned a military cross after carrying a wounded solider through
enemy's crossfire. He fought in many battles till 1917 where he would then have to leave the war due to Shellshock. Sassoon criticized the political
leaders who sent young men off to die in huge battles that seemed pointless and while Sassoon was in Hospital he opposed the war by writing many
poems including "Does it Matter", "The Hero' and arguably the most tragic poem, "Suicide in the Trenches".
SUICIDE IN THE TRENCHES
By Siegfried Sassoon
I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.
You smug–faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Trench Warfare In The Trenches
During World War I most of the fighting was done on land where it was solider versus solider and the one who could withstand the pressure of the
trenches the longest would win. Trench warfare was completely accidental and the fighting was supposed to go as quick as possible where your
troops would be in and out then they could all go home; what ended up happening was one of the world's longest stalemates where both sides dug in
their boots and held their ground for as long as they could. However many things changed trench warfare such as: no man's land, tanks, machine guns,
gas, grenades, and shelling. There were horrors far worse than the ones seen in the trenches though, because between the trenches the lined there
land and the enemies was a place known as no man's land. No man's land was the stretch of land between one sides trenches and the others. This land
is described as the worst place to be if you were in the war. No man's land was full of dead bodies from both sides as neither side was able to reach the
bodies of their men; so there bodies just laid there rotting and decomposing because no one was able to get their ... Show more content on

Machine guns were the first of their kind and were highly revolutionary; they were first used by the Germans where they would line the trenches.
Machine guns were operated by two people a gunner and someone who would feed the bullets into the machine gun so it didn't stop firing. It was
used to repel soldiers that were pushing at their trenches and it could mow down a whole wave of infantry that was pushing at you in seconds it was
brutally efficient and soon every side in the war needed to have one because it was the beat at mowing down troops. Machine guns made the stalemate
last much longer as eventually all sides had them and pushing would likely result in death for your side so pushing the enemy line became far less

Suicide in the trenches
Title and Author: "Suicide in the Trenches" is a poem written by Siegfried Sassoon. Sassoon wrote this poem during his First World War military
service and published in his 1918 collection: "Counter–Attack and Other Poems"
Form and style
This poem is a lyric which contains of three stanzas each containing four lines. This is written in rhyming couplets, the style of the poem seems very
simple and song–like
War is destructive of youth and innocence. There is a change in mood where the first stanza talks about the despair when he is in the trenches. In the
third stanza we move to the poet's anger about the way that people at home feel
Each stanza has four lines with a pattern of a–a–b–b–c–c–d–d–e–e–f–f. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* The last stanza from lines nine to twelve, is a satirical view of Sassoon's greatest criticism and determination to revenge of those "smug–faced
crowds", in verse 9, who "cheer when soldiers march by", in verse 10. He hated those who considered to be making a profit out of the war and those
who were happy and proud their children going to serve their country: This creates a patriotic feeling.
Moods/ Feelings * Bitter * Conscious * Anger * Rage * Antagonism * Resentment * The dominant mood of this poem is anger but there is also a
feeling of sadness and sorrow about the young man's death.
Personal Evaluation
In my opinion war is evil and this poem gives us a good view on the reality of war and its consequences. This poem mainly criticises on the horrors
of the war, the health conditions of the soldiers, the loneliness they had to face, patriotism of soldiers and the lack of resources that soldiers faced in
the trenches. it made me think how inhumane the world that we are a part of is, that such horrible and indecent acts could be committed by humans.
Having a young boy take such drastic measures is beyond my understanding for the time, the year which this poem was written but of course it must be
understood because this was caused by the horrors of

My Experience In Ww1 Trenches
Ww1 trenches 1915 I wanted to join the Canadian military because I had pride in Canadian army and I wanted to serve for them. In my opinion, I
thought it would be an adventurous as well. I had finished my training and I am being traveled to Germany to fight. I and my fellow allies were in
trench warfare. All of us had different positions,i was a machine gunner which i thought was a horrible experience. I had a horrible experience in the
trenches because there isn't just one or two people in trenches, but are more then 5 soldiers in trenches which makes it very crowded since your stuck
in a trench. I was extremely unsatisfied when I discovered rats were in the trenches because they took our food and chewed on our clothes which we
already had shortage on. I and each of my friends got turns doing a variety of things like sleeping, periscoping,writing... Show more content on

commitment, which split the country on linguistic lines. One of the soldiers cleaning the weapons interrupted our discussion and added on to that
Robert Borden is also causing trouble by joining the war the same time Britain because French Canadians don't want t be part of Britain in any way.

The Death Of The Trenches
Children are often considered carefree and innocent, which is the reason behind their state of happiness. They rarely cross paths with conflict from
the outside world, but what happens when they become men and are sent off to fight in the war? Otto Dix's visual representation along with the
poems, "Suicide in the Trenches" by Siegfried Sassoon, "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owens, and "Blessed Are" by Charles Peguy all
capture the horrors and distress caused by World War 1. When it came time to enlist in the war, young men were ecstatic about becoming heroes by
the act of serving their country. Although, in reality these men did not know the consequences that came with their life changing decision to go into
combat. Sassoon's "Suicide in the Trenches" exposes the psychological issues that overwhelmed one soldier in particular, but as the reader, it is clear
that the feelings described belong to any soldier that ever felt the wrath of the war. The first stanza paints a picture of a soldier who knows nothing of
death or destruction. Line number three, specifically, reads "slept soundly through the lonesome dark" (Suicide in the Trenches). This shows that prior
to the war, this soldier felt comfortable and safe within the walls of his home and most importantly, he felt safe within himself. The last mention of him
is in the second stanza where it is revealed that he committed suicide. The last stanza could resemble a call of action. The narrator calls the civilians

A Day At The Trenches Narrative Report
I was more than grateful to discover a parcel of crackers and supplies arrive in my name. I thank you for your remarkable support towards me over
the course of this seemingly endless war. After spending a year and a half under constant hell fire in a strange and distant place, I am more than eager
to come home to you.
When I initially enlisted in the Royal Army, I felt it was my duty to defend our glorious Empire against the malevolent hands of the vicious Jerries.
I expected to gloriously march into Europe; but with every incident bringing me closer and closer to death, I feel as if I signed myself up for a
suicide mission. The day I boarded the RMS Alaunia is still clear in my memory. Thousands of men like me were crammed into the vessel,
anticipating the imminent adventure and the chance to travel abroad. Everyone was certain that this war would soon be over and that we would all
peacefully return as a decorated war hero. After doing a mock attack at the park, I was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For about a week, there was no significant action on my part. We went through the daily ritual of stand to, followed by an order to stand down when
it was clear the Germans wouldn't attack. The conditions of the trenches are sub par, with the constant infestation of rodents. For breakfast, we are
given a slice of hard bread with a cup of tea to wash it down. I often spend the rest of my day standing on the fire–steps waiting for something to
happen; But of course, little happened. Sometimes, men would be asked to go on a trench raid. If the attack was successful, the soldiers would
receive a two week home leave along with some other supplies. I went on a couple of these missions, and I saw many of my friends get caught on
barbed wire to picked away by machine gun. The wounds were large enough to blow off heads and limbs in some cases, truly

World War 1 Trenches
The trenches in World War 1 could be muddy and smelly. There was many dead bodies buried nearby. The toilets would overflow into the trenches
occasionally. Millions of rats that grew the size of cats would infest the trenches, and lice would bother the soldiers every day. The trenches were long
skinny ditches that were dug into the ground by the soldiers. Soldiers lived in these trenches all day and night. And would protect the soldiers. Trench
warfare reached its highest development on the western front when armies of men faced each other in a line of trenches. The western front extended
from the Belgian coast through to northern eastern France to Switzerland. Trenches were not an enjoyable place to be.

Break Day In The Trenches
The Western Front in World War One was a bleak place for soldiers. Men died from bullets, shrapnel, concussive blasts, gas, disease, dehydration,
trench foot, and exposure. The life expectancy in the trenches was only six weeks (War History Online). In "Break Day in the Trenches", Isaac
Rosenberg documents the feelings of a sentry at dawn. The sentry watches the sun begin to rise and plucks a poppy to put behind his ear. He
watches a rat and internally converses with it, before coming under attack by an artillery barrage. In "Break Day in the Trenches", Isaac Rosenberg
uses symbols of poppies and rats to support an implicit claim that death is always nearby on the front lines. In the first line of the poem, Rosenberg
evokes imagery of death, writing, "The darkness crumbles away". Darkness and death have been conjoined in human consciousness since the
beginning of time, and the use of the verb "crumbles" connotes decay and death. The narrator views the sunrise, normally a symbol of life and rebirth,
as a symbol of death. He takes this unusual stance because dawn was a common time to begin artillery barrages in anticipation of an attack.
Confirming the poem is taking place before a dawn barrage, the author calls no–man's–land "the sleeping green", with the... Show more content on

In a previous incarnation of the poem, called "In the Trenches", symbolism was more overt. In this draft, the speaker gives a "blood red poppy" to his
companion in the trenches and places another behind his ear. Then an artillery shell lands, killing his companion in the trenches. Impacts litter the
bottom of the trench with poppies and cover everything in dust. An artillery shell kills the narrator's fellow in a gruesome way and he is "smashed"

World War One was one of the deadliest conflicts in human history and it is best known as being the war fought in the trenches. Living conditions
in the trenches were horrible and soldiers often developed trench foot, a disease caused by standing in water for long periods of time. Consequently,
soldiers treated fresh boots as a luxury and therefore went to extreme lengths to getting them. "We have lost all sense of other considerations, because
they are artificial. Only the facts are real and important for us. And good boots are scarce". (All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque, Pg.20). In that

Trench Warfare In The Trenches Essay
Soldiers within the trenches would illustrate their despair by singing, " We're here because we're here, we're here because we're here, we're here
because we're here, we're here because we're here." World War 1 was ignited and many perceived it would be quick and easy. However, as trenches
were dug, stalemate developed. The growing development of trench warfare was evident in the Western Front. As it revolutionized, the war slowed
down, causing little victory, but high casualties within the Allies fighting in the Western Front

Central Powers, consisting of Germany and Austria–Hungary. During World War 1, as trench warfare progressed, a system began to develop, new

Thus, trenches began to connect, so a soldier could be supplied with food, mail from their family, ammunition, and fresh troops. Later, trenches
contained first– aid stations, and some even small kitchens. Most importantly, there were machine gun stations that would aid a soldier under attack,
and dugouts that would sustain a large amount of troops during an assault. Most soldiers could spend up to two weeks in a trench at a time if they
lived through it. First, they would spend time in the front line trench, fighting the enemy. Then, they would progress to the support trenches, and later
rest. Even if the soldiers were not fighting, they were put to repair the trenches, move supplies, clean weapons, and undergo inspection or guard duty.
Trenches had to be repaired constantly due to bombardment from the enemy or rain. In fact, daily life within the trenches was foreseeable, " Thirty
minutes before sunrise, troops had to " stand to," ready to repel any attack. If no attack was forthcoming that day, the day's routine consisted of
breakfast followed by inspection, sentry duty, restoration of the trenches, care of personal items, or whiling away the time as best they could." At last,
trench warfare developed to a point where soldiers had to constantly remain within them and develop a

Soldiers followed a basic routine on normal days. The day began with the stand–to in which soldiers would wake up an hour before dawn and stand on
the firing step, rifles in hand, to look out for a predawn attack by the enemy (Feature Articles – Life in the Trenches). Each trench possessed a firing
step, which was placed two to three feet from the trench floor to allow soldiers to peer over the trench and spot the enemy (Fire Step). Stand–to, which
is short for 'stand–for–arms,' occurred because it was believed that just before dawn, when it was still dark, was the best time to mount an attack (Ellis
38). Both sides practiced this morning ritual. After stand–to and the morning hate, when both sides would relieve the tension of the morning by firing
their machine guns in the air, an unofficial truce was called by the enemies for about an hour as they prepared and ate breakfast (Ellis 38). After
breakfast, rifles were inspected and daily chores were appointed to the soldiers (Feature Article – Life in the Trenches). Some chores included mending
the trench by refilling sandbags, repairing duckboards on the floor, and pumping water or mud out of the trench after heavy rain falls (Feature Article–
Life in the Trenches). After lunch, more chores of the such were completed throughout the day. At dusk, stand

Theme Of Death In The Trenches
During the war, death was a rampant issue that ran amok in the trenches. But it wasn't always physical, or quick. Joseph Boyden illustrates in his
novel that death is different for everyone and every time. For some, it can feel decades long or quick as a breath. It could be world shattering, or
just another event that happens in your day. More than roughly forty percent of all men who participated and died in the war were killed by snipers.
For 15 year old Sean Patrick, this was the horrifying reality he had to face. Shot through the neck by a German sniper, he writhed on the ground in
pain for a few last precious moments of life, however in great immense pain. Life taken from him as quick as a gunshot. Mind, body, and soul. Sean

The Trenches Of Birdsong ( 1993 )
Examine the ways Faulks presents superstition among characters in the trenches in Birdsong (1993).
Superstition as an 'excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural' is often associated with perilous endeavours, and a psychological
need to latch on to a mechanism to allow hope for the preservation of the fragile human condition. This systematic and illogical belief in the
supernatural is extensively prevalent throughout Faulks' novel, during the linear storyline of Stephen and other orbital characters it is referenced
through not only irrational fears but additionally rituals of extispicy.

This thus deepens the contrast to the final section of the sentence which informs the reader that Weir is fascinated by thedivination taking place. Using
the adjective 'fascinated' precisely aligns with imagery associated with a childlike fixation upon something, and so it can be extrapolated that in this
case the object of the subject's curiosity is extispicy. That Weir can stomach such a ritual and remain engaged and 'fascinated' suggest that the
character truly believes that this can determine his future with a degree of useful accuracy. This barbaric practice and all its derivatives collectively
indicate the desperation of the soldiers and how they are left with no option but to cling on to any form of hope they can muster.
As well as an air of hope, an underlying sense of ridicule and even mockery is brought to bear through Ellis' response to the ritualistic predictions,
remarking that Stephen and Weir should be 'ashamed of themselves'. A depth of ignominy is acknowledged in this light, which evinces that certain
soldiers believe such practice to be nonsense and that those who practice it should be embarrassed. Specific phrasing as 'you should be ashamed'
stipulates an understanding that such behaviour was commonplace, as the characters are not ashamed, however it is of Ellis' opinion that they should
be. Faulks in this way offers

Phillip Jones March 15, 2005 Essay #1
During World War I, trench warfare was very common. It was a newer technique in battles as in wars prior to the Great World War, fighting was less
invasive and men merely marched at each other from opposite ends of fields and fought until only one side remained standing or a white flag was
hung high in surrender. In fact in older wars, the fighting was far less dangerous to the point where battles were often times viewed by locals who
watched from side lines with really no threat of getting hurt. In World War Ihowever, the fighting had upscaled to the most sadistic type the world had
ever experienced. With the industrialist wave that had overcome us in the late 1800s into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

costly, and vulnerable. All characteristic to the nature of the changes that occurred in the new and vicious type of warfare in World War I. As Europe
switched into War mode, everyone's lives were altered around the new concentration. As men went off to fight, sit in waiting, and die in these awful
trenches, their wives and children went into the factories. The countries in Europe, especially the main powers at war such as Germany,
Austria–Hungary, France, Great Britain, Russia and Serbia, turned in to war focused economies. All the uniforms, bags, canteens, weapons, and other

The first world war was very revolutionary, it was said to be the war to end all wars, mostly in part because of all the new weapons and techniques to

summer of 1914 after a Serbian terrorist shot and killed the archduke of Austria–Hungary, it would not end until November of 1918. It was the biggest
war of it's and was thought to be the last war that mankind would go through, and that there would be world peace afterward. Ironically that was not

For this, each side would dig trenches and soldiers would stay in there for months on end. Every country had their own techniques that they liked
and preferred to use. Due to this, battles were extremely deadly as one never knew what was going to happen that the other side had planned. One
of the deadliest techniques being tunneling. It was a very advanced tactic that could take months or even years to perfect. The idea behind it was if
you were on a battlefield and fighting against someone, you would dig a tunnel underground from your area to theirs. After the tunnel was built,
explosives were placed in the tunnel and then later blown up to kill the enemy. Along with weapons, tactics had a big role in World War One. All in
all, World War I was a bloody and revolutionary war that would change the way countries would combat. Even now we still use many of the same
weapons, just more advanced to today's standards. Although this war was truly detrimental to the economies of many countries it had its benefits.

Evaluate The Effectiveness Of Ww1 Trenches
Of the numerous strategies used throughout World War 1 and 2 those in WW2 proved more effective due to the standstill trench warfare brought, the
ease with which trenches were defeated by tanks later in the war, and the speed and efficiency widespread mechanized warfare and blitzkrieg gave to
armies in WW2.
In throughout WW1, trenches were used quite liberally along the front lines. As a strategy to prevent advancement of the enemy's front lines trenches
proved effective, however due to its widespread use by both sides it prevented nearly any progression in the war for periods of time. The stagnation it
caused is a major reason why widespread use of the tactic was ineffectual. Dues to the long periods troops stayed in trenches, which were quite
unsanitary and muddy soldiers often contracted infectious diseases or gangrene, pushing this tactic further into the reaches of inferior due to the harm
it could cause one's own troops. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tanks allowed a force to advance towards an enemy's lines with the protection of the armor and playing a part in rendering trenches obsolete. The
further advancement of tank technology following WW1 cemented trench warfare's ineffectuality and obsolescence, as the vast majority of tank's flaws
were greatly improved.
The invention, improvement, and proliferation of tanks not only rendered numerous WW1 strategies completely obsolete but gave rise to
mechanized warfare. Mechanized warfare in its various forms proved quite effective One specific type such as the highly mechanized blitzkrieg,
allowed the Nazis to very quickly and effectively overwhelm the defenses of nations during invasions prior to and early in the Second World War.
Besides Blitzkrieg, mechanized warfare in general, allowed battles to reach a decisive conclusion quickly, meaning battles were often far shorter than in

World War I : Trenches
World War 1: Trenches Intro: The life for the average soldier in the WW1 trenches was pretty horrible. They had to live in mud, fellow dead
soldiers and lots of rats, some the size of your hand. Life of a soldier was very tough, having to see your best mate get shot and he left to rot. Any
soldiers that made it out of the war would have suffered either shell shock or post–traumatic stress disorder and living with either of these would have
been terrible. Trenches were long, narrow ditches dug into the ground where soldiers lived day and night. There were many lines of German trenches
on one side and many lines of the trenches on the allied side. In the middle there was no–man's land, so called because it didn't belong to either army.
Soldiers crossed no– man's land when they wanted to attack. Soldiers in the trenches did not get much sleep, but when they did it was in the afternoon
during daylight and at night for only 1 hour at a time. They were woken up at different times, either to complete one of the daily chores or the go to
fight. The system of trenches was employed because a German commander, General Erich von Falkenhayn, decided that his troops must at all costs
hold onto those parts of France and Belgium that Germany still occupied. Falkenhayn ordered his men to dig trenches that would provide them with
protection from the advancing French and British troops. The Allies soon realised that they could not break through this line and they also began to dig
trenches.

The Trenches Of World War I
Introduction:
World War 1 changed the world around it. More men fought than one could comprehend. World War 1 almost destroyed an entire generation of men.
The battlefield for Australians were lined with trenches filled with disease, pests and the fallen where they had medical aid. They experienced traumas
not yet known commonly at all. The war was not embellished for its inhumanity in its time but as we see now the men and women who helped with
the war effort lived with fear of death, disease and infection.
What Were the Trenches? Why was a System of Trenches Employed?

Were Men from all Armies Involved in Trench Warfare? At Which Battle Sites Were Trenches Dug?
The Allies consisted of– Serbia, Russia, France (Raymond PoincarСђ), Romania, Belgium, British Empire (David Lloyd George/George V), United
States (Woodrow Wilson), Italy (Vittorio Emanuele III/Vittorio Orlando), Brazil, Greece, Japan, Liberia, Montenegro, Portugal, Romania, Australia.
The Central Powers consisted of– Germany, Austria–Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire. These powers and allies fought each other on the Western
Front, Eastern front, in Gallipoli, and France. The Western Front, Eastern Front and Gallipoli had trenches protecting them.
What Were the Conditions Like for the Soldiers in the Trenches?
Trenches were infested with rats, disease and mud. Rats infested the trenches. There were two kinds of rats– black and brown. Brown rats were the
most feared as they gorged on more human flesh and could grow to the size of a small dogs. This quote describes rats perfectly– Great, sleek,
corpse–fed rats ran in squads between our legs and over our feet as we stood. Their obscene squeaking could be heard at all times. Some men
conceived an unmeasured hatred of these loathsome things, and were always trying to slaughter them. I wondered, as I stood, did they picture
themselves as those scattered corpses– a prey to these. Imagination is decidedly not good for a soldier. It is one of the things Kipling forgot to tell us–
George Mitchell.

Life In Trenches
What was life in the trenches like? This is a question you might ask yourself after learning more about WW1 and its exploits. Soldiers did not have
an easy life to live in the trenches and everyday just grew harder. Trenches are basically long narrow ditches that were dug by soldiers for shelter
from enemy fire. Back in WW1, the trenches became a place where soldiers would live and sleep with poor living conditions. The way the trenches
in WW1 were set up was with the German trenches on one side and all the Allied trenches on the other. Between the two enemy trenches would be no
man's land which didn't belong to either one of the armies. Some soldiers would climb out of the trenches and charge across no–man's land to attack
the enemy. This tactic is known as going over the top .

This makes sense considering soldiers were living in basically tunnels with no toilets or other necessities. Trenches were described as cold, muddy and
smelly. If soldiers wanted to use the bathroom they would have to dig holes and those "toilets" would sometimes overflow into the trenches. Soldiers
would also have to live in the trenches alongside multiple rats carrying diseases. Rat infestation was a huge problem in the trenches as they would feed
on the soldier's food and chew up their clothing. They were two types of rats in the trenches, the black and brown rat. Both of these rats were hated
however, the brown rats were particularly feared. This was because brown rats were often seen devouring human remains in a grotesque manner by
eating their eyes and liver. Soldiers often said that the rats could grow to be as big as a cat. They tried to get rid of these rats with methods such as
gunfire, dogs, using bayonets and battering them to death. But no matter how much they tried, the rats would still come back and continue to wreck

Analysis Of Suicide In The Trenches
Suicide in the Trenches
War, a slaughter of mankind that has gone on for hundreds and thousands of years. One of the most gruesome wars was WW1 which lasted for 4
years from 28 July 1914 – 11 November 1918. In this devastating war, the total number of casualties includes about 11 million military personnel and
about 7 million civilians. Many of those soldiers were young men. The poem "Suicide in the trenches" written by Siegfried Sassoon describes the harsh
experiences in the trenches and how many soldiers became depressed. Sassoon was an officer who earned a military cross after carrying a wounded
soldier through enemy's crossfire. He fought in many battles until 1917 when he was hospitalised due to Shellshock. Sassoon criticized the political
leaders who sent young men off to die in huge battles that seemed pointless, and while Sassoon was in Hospital he opposed the war by writing many
poems, including "Does it Matter", "The Hero' and arguably the most tragic poem, "Suicide in the Trenches".
SUICIDE IN THE TRENCHES
By Siegfried Sassoon
I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.
You smug–faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Suicide In The Trenches By Siegfried Sassoon
The poems 'Dulce et Decorum est' by Wilfred Owen and 'Suicide in the trenches' by Siegfried Sassoon used the techniques of personal pronouns and
irony to convey the poet's feelings towards war. Formerly Owen and Sassoon all war poems had been patriotic and was used to encourage employment
of young men in war. But, both Owen and Sassoon had seen the horrors of trench warfare themselves and their poetry was therefore become realistic
about the unforgiving realities of war. Owen stated on his poems that 'my subject is war, and the pity of it, all a poet can do is warn.' Owen and
Sassoon were both trying to warn young men against war and advise the public on how cruel and sickening war actually is.
In both poems, after describing the inhumane ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 'Dulce et Decorum est' irony was used in the title of the poem which means 'it is sweet and fitting'. This comes from the saying that was commonly
used during World War One: "
Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori" or "It is sweet and fitting to die for your country." This title greatly contradicted
the poems content, which described the gruesome death of a soldier from poisonous gas, which is a sickening and horrific, not sweet and fitting, way
to die. In 'Suicide in the trenches' a rhythmic technique of iambic tetrameter was used to create irony. This creates a 'sing–song' effect, which is greatly
contradicted by the diction of the poem. This describes a "simple soldier boy" committing suicide because the conditions of the trenches caused
him to be "cowed and glum". Irony was used in these poems to lull the reader into the belief that the poem was going to be cheerful and then shock
the reader when they read the diction of the poem. The reader's shock when they read the poem would have caused them to reconsider their thoughts
on war and talked to them how disgusting war is and the poet's purpose of how it's wrong to disregard war or spread propaganda about it being
glorious. The irony used also shocked me. which caused me to feel sympathy for the soldiers and the horrors they faced in the

Trenches In Ww1 Essay
Trench warfare was implemented to provide cover for soldiers during battle in WW1 seeing that most battlefields were open field & farms, so
soldiers had little or no cover from rifle fire. After suffering thousands of casualties, soldiers began to dig into the ground creating cover. Over the
months the trenches grew & evolved to hold barracks & equipment. Within a few months trenches were equipped with all essentials to ensure there
was no need to leave them unnecessarily. Trenches were first dug by hand but soon soldiers would be equipped with shovels to increase productivity.
Trenches were also mainly built at night to avoid detection by enemy troops. "Trenches were relatively new for soldiers arriving on the front & were

The soldiers in WW1 would be eating simple foods such as rice, beans, potatoes, stale biscuits, a lot of canned meat and sometimes they grew
vegetables that were not being used! The food wasn't very appealing at all but that was needed to make them survive. Afterwards, soldiers would
have to do daily chores such as refilling sandbags, repairing trenches and the duckboards on the floor. Afternoon Routine in the Trenches
Sometimes (not very often) when a battle is not taking place, soldiers had time to write or read letters, play games or catch up on sleep they
missed. Some men were unlucky and had to be on guard duty. When there is a battle, no one can mess around. Everyone has to be in full
concentration. Snipers were sup up in lookout posts and would fire at the enemy and the first sight of movement, you had to keep your head down in
the trenches no matter what you were doing for fear of being shot. There is a photo of a sniper in the slideshow above. Sometimes the opponents
would play a game with their helmets to see who could hit it with a bullet. This shows that it wasn't all about the death and killing others in

What Was Life In The Trenches
Trench warfare was a prominent component of battle, specifically during the years of 1914–1918 – the first World War. This essay aims to examine
how detrimental life in the trenches on the Western front in World War one was to the average soldier. It attempts to answer the question what was life
in the trenches like for the average soldier in the first World War? To fully and thoroughly understand the concepts oftrench warfare, this essay goes
into depth on topics such as the set–up of trenches in comparison to those of their opposition, common disease in a trench, advantages and
disadvantages of using trenches in battle, the weapons, communications, and strategies involved in the war, as well as the friendships gained whilst in
battle and the role of the arts in World War one. As Germany had started off strong with the most advantageous location and high
–tech weaponry, one
would believe that the war would be taken by the Germans. Yet through disease, fear, and suffrage, the British scored a triumphant win. All of which
had much to do with the advances of weaponry and trench warfare. Aside from who won the war, the events that went on in the trenches are what
made it so unbearable for such a long period of time. The reality was that the average soldier was either ill, depressed, killed, or completely insane.
Surrounded by corpses, suffering from hunger, and susceptible to many diseases, a trench was no place for any civilian.

City Trenches Summary
In City Trenches, Ira Katznelson argues that the working class in American cities developed two distinct spheres of political life: one professional and
one personal. This distinction was a consequence of the emergence of a capitalism economy. Instead of professional political solidarity, the working
class mobilized in their individual ethnic communities. Katznelson uses the Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods of northern Manhattan to
explain the ethnic politics phenomena. In Washington Heights, the Jewish population enjoyed political control for a significant portion of the late
nineteenth and up to the mid–twentieth century. Likewise, Irish Americans settled in Inwood where they managed to control neighborhood politics for

The professional interests of the worker are regulated to the workplace. This regulation is a choice of the worker. Instead, the worker is the only
influencer in their personal politics, without any connection to their professional life. Therefore, Katznelson appears to take the approach of the
worker having agency in political life in the American city. Unlike the other authors we have discussed, who take a hard line on a conglomerated
political elite controlling politics in cities, Katznelson believes that working class individuals have some control over how politics operate in their
city. He does not that deny power is vested in an elite on a large citywide level. Katznelson's assertion is that working class politics place emphasis
on everyday neighborhood politics instead of worrying about the problems of City Hall. The political elite of the city and the working class
neighborhood residents works in conjugation, largely based on ethnic lines. Katznelson does reference Dahl once in City Trenches. Dahl's discussion
of the formation of the power elite on economic lines is what Katznelson referenced, which then became political power. The city trench system was a
new political system designed to combine political and financial

small buildings. What is this place? What is this place? What is this place? Don't trust this place. This place is dangerous. Stop walking. Stop being

World War I was one of the worst wars the world has ever seen, because it resulted in many casualties. The war, mostly occurred because allies
attacked other countries which resulted in the countries allies to attack them. During this period of time people were miserable because most of
their farmland was destroyed due to the war, but it was even worse for the soldiers because the war grounds were dangerous and the only safe
places were the trenches. There more, WWI was one of the deadliest wars in the world, because it had many fatalities and was full of deadly
weapons. The most deadliest parts of the war were fought in the Italian border and the alps which resulted in many casualties due to the dangerous

The War is an example of the evil man can do, because many soldiers showed no shame into killing their victim. We frequently refer to humans as
the root of evil because we have no heart in what we do. Critical attributes of the war are ammunition and trenches because without ammunition you
wouldn't be able to defend yourself, and trenches are one of the safest places to be during the war. A defining characteristic of the war is
mobilization because you needed that to assemble troops and to get them ready for war. The key components of WWI are mostly trenches because it
resulted in protection from the ammunition. An explanation of peace provides insight into the war because, like I said before there was no purpose in
why they were fighting the war. Therefore, WWI had a significant impact on society because it resulted in many crops and land destroyed which
shortened their food supply. One can trace the major causes of WWI to the allies because they fought with one and other. The critical factors was the
assassination of Archduke Franz which resulted in the allies getting involved. Therefore the war was inhumane because people turned against each
other, in which they tortured each other to death, which is awful because humans aren't supposed to be violent but, are to be peaceful

Analysis Of Suicide In The Trenches
The subject matter of suicide in the trenches is about the mental illness and severe depression of a young soldier in the trenches during world war
1. The soldier's depression is displayed clearly even before his suicide is described. This poem was written by Siegfried Sassoon to display the
horrid conditions and mental state of young soldiers in the trenches during the war. It is intended to criticise the boredom, loneliness, health
conditions and patriotism that many soldiers faced in the trenches. The poem describes the grief and depression that the soldiers felt during these
times and opposes the war propaganda planned by the government. It is meant to convey the message that war was not a fun experience or
adventure and that the conditions will drive many soldiers into depression or even suicide in extreme cases. The poem of suicide in the trenches
has a structure and form of three, four line stanzas. It is a short poem, which creates a certain effect on the reader. The individual lines are also very
short. The poem's length can be interpreted as a metaphor of the boy's life. The poem is short like the young boy's life, as he killed himself at a
young age. This particular type of short structure is used to portray the short tragedy of the suicidal boy's life. The length of his life is used to portray
the tragedy and horridness of the first world war and war in general. The tone of this poem starts of very melancholic and ends very angrily through

Also known as "Stand–to–Arms", the process was observed morning and night by both sides of the war. Each man had to climb up the fire step to
guard against an attack from the enemy. Stand–to can last up to an hour, after which men are ordered to stand down for breakfast. This repetitive
process later became known as "the morning hate".
Most enemy attacks happened at dawn and dusk so the soldiers had to be aware of their surroundings. Attacks could happen when they least expect it.
Trench warfare was so intense that 10% of all the soldiers who fought were killed.

The Dangers of the Trenches Ww1
Introduction The Great War began in 1914 and lasted a gruelling 4 years. During this war, new and powerful weapons were developed such as
machinery, guns and heavy artillery. Soldiers had no choice but to dig trenches, which were barely sustainable to live in, in order to protect
themselves from the constant enemy gunfire. They lived, ate, slept and fought in these trenches for the whole 4 years... In this investigation I will
thoroughly examine evidence from a whole range of resources to find out the extent of some of the misery and dangers in the trenches for the British
and soldiers in World War One starting with miseries. Chapter 1 Was Life In The Trenches Miserable? The Food in the Trenches A huge amount of

While these soldiers are looking in good– health, soldiers often became ill after eating the poorly prepared food, which may carry parasites from
water or unusual ingredients like plant weeds and mud when rations fell terribly low. Health and Hygiene Soldiers in the trenches face some of
the most unhygienic environments known to man! The extent of the health problems is never fully understood. This is primarily because they
were censored and only the war survivors lived to tell the stories about the problems. Some of the most obvious problems were the cold, mud and
the harsh side effects of rough sleeping. In winter, warm cups of team would freeze in a couple of minutes& even if you took your boots off! The
mud from the poorly made British trenches coated clothing in just a few hours and was rarely changed, leaving the body to bath in bacterial
growth and sweat! In severe cases, one solider spend 42 days of 1915 without removing his socks and boots. Some soldiers did sometimes do this
intentionally to get out of the front line fighting and even faced trench foot and risk of amputation to escape the harsh environment. Body Lice One
of many problems was body lice infestation within the trenches which made life extremely difficult! One soldier said they were 'pale fawn in colour,
and they left blotchy red markings all over the body'. They also left a vile smell. They

Suicide in the Trenches- Analysis
Suicide In The Trenches
In my analysis, I will demonstrate how Siegfred Sassoon has used many different language techniques to show his perspective on the true meaning of
war.
For example, the poet has used simplistic diction that creates an image of the destruction of a "simple soldier boy". At first we see him whistling, this
then degrades to depression which lead him to committing suicide. Siegfred Sassoon concludes his poem with anger and a powerful message. "Sneak
home and pray you'll never know" emphasizes that those who aren't soldiers have to "sneak home and pray" to show their empathy for the soldiers. In
the last line it implies the fact that the crowd doesn't have to go through "the hell where youth and laughter go". ... Show more content on

the rhyme of "brain" and "again" at line eight tries to form a connection that although a young boy was convinced to join the war and fought
tremendously for his country and himself. However, in the end, he was pushed to his limit and "no one spoke of him again". This shows how cruel
and selfish war is. The boy had sacrificed his childhood fun, laughter and playful life in for nothing to return. This is effective because it makes the
reader think about 'why is there war' and 'why are there innocent lives at risk' which creates the bitter mood.
The diction used in the poem sends the reader a clear message about war. In the last stanza, the word "kindling" is being used to describe the "eyes" of
the "smug–faced crowds". "Kindling" is used to describe the facial description which shows that it is a very shallow expression feature that expresses
the lack of empathy shown to the young men. However, Siegfried tries to show with a sarcastic tone that they think war is a glorious thing; they feel
proud of the children risking their lives with nothing in return and seem to understand and appreciate what they are doing. But in reality the public
cannot imagine what these children are going through. This is how the word "kindling" reveals a shallow side of everyone's personality.
In my personal opinion, the last stanza is the strongest and most impactful stanza. While the previous two stanzas shows the transformation of the boy

Uses Of Trenches In WWI
Uses Of Trenches In WWI Although some people might say that world war 1 was won only by man power it was real won with the great use of
trenches. The front line trench covered soldiers from enemy fire. The support trench provided a security for the front line trench. Reserve trench
supported the trench with artillery fire, and other utilities.
The trenches were the main place that the war took place. The trenches provided cover and shelter for the soldiers. According to the British Library the
soldiers maintained a specific schedule with simple rotations containing rest, work, and war itself. "The frontline troops themselves were rotated to
ensure that time spent facing the enemy was balanced by periods of rest and, occasionally, home–leave."(British library) This rotation kept the soldiers
spirits up allowing them to rest, then get up and keep fighting. "The determination of soldiers to keep fighting could be strongly influenced by the
regularity of this rotation."(British library) The sanitation of soldiers was very bad this caused many soldiers to be depressed and have a low morale.
They had to crawl around in mud, see their friends die, and shair sleeping space with rats."I am young, I am twenty years ... Show more content on

These trenches contained bunkers and other facilities for supporting the front line trench. The support trench could also be used as a frontline trench in
case the frontline trench is over run by the enemy troops. "This trench was placed behind the frontline trench just in case the front line trench was taken
over"(Trenches During WWI). According to Trenches During WWI these trenches were very different from the frontline trenches, unlike the frontline
trench instead of being built in zig zags, it was built in a straight line. Spartacus educational claims that the front line trench and the support trench were
connected by communication trenches that were dug sideways to avoid direct artillery

Break Of Day In The Trenches
Interestingly, not all WWI literature is violent like one may reasonably suspect. What I find interesting about WWI literature–– and a lot of good war
literature–– is how it creates feelings of calmness in situations that are clearly not calm. An example of this is seen in the poem "Break of Day in the
Trenches." While in trenches, a muddy, uncomfortable, coffin–like, mess, the narrator talks about pulling "..the parapet's poppy / To stick behind my
ear" (Rosenberg 2030). Essentially, even while in combat, and in a terrible place, the narrator finds a flower and decorates himself with it. This is
very odd: the beauty of the poppy does not belong in trenches. Yet there it exists, and the narrator takes note! Further, in "Memoirs of an Infantry

opportunity to give their sons, husbands, fathers, and brothers a proper burial. It can get depressing here in these trenches as I do nothing but stare at

We are positioned at the point where the River Aisne and River Oise meet. We know that holding our ground is important because if some how
they were to break through our trenches here they would have clear access to Chantilly and then they would move to our most beloved city, Paris.
Although we know that holding our ground is very important, we had hoped for a chance to drive those nasty Germans back to where they came
from. The day started slow, the sleep I longed for had eluded me as normal. Being tired in battle was no good thing, and almost no one on our side
got much sleep. Thankfully, we're sure no one on the other side got much sleep either. In the wee hours of the morning before daybreak we
prepared for battle. I had all those feelings rushing back to me; scared, anxious, excited, and nervous. Once we felt we were ready we all quickly
headed for our posts. There was no good way to fight a battle in these trenches. Whoever got chosen to attempt an attack was almost surely dead as
soon as the orders were sent. Running across no man's land was one of the most treacherous tasks we ever had. I have only been sent out twice,
luckily both times I have been able to retreat back to our trenches safely after our job was done. Both sides ran at each other like this all day during
battles. As you can tell this hardly lead to any good as hundreds died and only feet were gained if you were lucky. Today was no different, we
engaged in this same type of warfare for hours. I saw fellow soldiers die attempting to cross to the German's side, and I even personally pulled the
trigger on Germans who attempted to cross to our side. Many soldiers say they struggle when killing others, but honestly I do not. I have seen too
many of my brothers shot by those Germans across from us that I find pride in

Life In The Trenches During WWI

  • 1. Life In The Trenches During WWI Life in the trenches during WWI was miserable. There seem to be no words that could truly match the horrific experience, but soldiers tried to conjure images using literature to come close to their experience. As stated in The World's History, Europe had not warfare on such a scale since the Napoleonic wars (Spodek 664). Even watching the American Civil War from afar could not have prepared Europe and the young men that served for the devastation WWI brought. The poems described the war as a collection of numbed men, simply waiting to die, "lines of grey, muttering faces." Men who had joined to serve their country had now become disillusioned with the nobility of dying for their country, wondering if the suffering both in and out of the trenches ... • 2. Analysis Of Suicide In The Trenches Suicide in the Trenches War, a slaughter of men that has gone on for hundreds & thousands of years. One of the most gruesome wars was WW1 which lasted for 4 years, 28 Jul. 1914 – 11 Nov. 1918. In this devastating war, the total number of casualties includes about 11 million military personnel and about 7 million civilians. Many of those soldiers were young men. The poem "Suicide in the trenches" written by Siegfried Sassoon tells what the harsh trenches had being like and how many soldiers became depressed. Sassoon was an officer who earned a military cross after carrying a wounded solider through enemy's crossfire. He fought in many battles till 1917 where he would then have to leave the war due to Shellshock. Sassoon criticized the political leaders who sent young men off to die in huge battles that seemed pointless and while Sassoon was in Hospital he opposed the war by writing many poems including "Does it Matter", "The Hero' and arguably the most tragic poem, "Suicide in the Trenches". SUICIDE IN THE TRENCHES By Siegfried Sassoon I knew a simple soldier boy Who grinned at life in empty joy, Slept soundly through the lonesome dark, And whistled early with the lark. In winter trenches, cowed and glum, With crumps and lice and lack of rum, He put a bullet through his brain. No one spoke of him again. You smug–faced crowds with kindling eye Who cheer when soldier lads march by, Sneak home and pray you'll never know The hell where youth and laughter go. The

  • 4. Trench Warfare In The Trenches During World War I most of the fighting was done on land where it was solider versus solider and the one who could withstand the pressure of the trenches the longest would win. Trench warfare was completely accidental and the fighting was supposed to go as quick as possible where your troops would be in and out then they could all go home; what ended up happening was one of the world's longest stalemates where both sides dug in their boots and held their ground for as long as they could. However many things changed trench warfare such as: no man's land, tanks, machine guns, gas, grenades, and shelling. There were horrors far worse than the ones seen in the trenches though, because between the trenches the lined there land and the enemies was a place known as no man's land. No man's land was the stretch of land between one sides trenches and the others. This land is described as the worst place to be if you were in the war. No man's land was full of dead bodies from both sides as neither side was able to reach the bodies of their men; so there bodies just laid there rotting and decomposing because no one was able to get their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Machine guns were the first of their kind and were highly revolutionary; they were first used by the Germans where they would line the trenches. Machine guns were operated by two people a gunner and someone who would feed the bullets into the machine gun so it didn't stop firing. It was used to repel soldiers that were pushing at their trenches and it could mow down a whole wave of infantry that was pushing at you in seconds it was brutally efficient and soon every side in the war needed to have one because it was the beat at mowing down troops. Machine guns made the stalemate last much longer as eventually all sides had them and pushing would likely result in death for your side so pushing the enemy line became far less ... • 5. Siegfried Sassoon Suicide in the trenches Title and Author: "Suicide in the Trenches" is a poem written by Siegfried Sassoon. Sassoon wrote this poem during his First World War military service and published in his 1918 collection: "Counter–Attack and Other Poems" Form and style This poem is a lyric which contains of three stanzas each containing four lines. This is written in rhyming couplets, the style of the poem seems very simple and song–like War is destructive of youth and innocence. There is a change in mood where the first stanza talks about the despair when he is in the trenches. In the third stanza we move to the poet's anger about the way that people at home feel Each stanza has four lines with a pattern of a–a–b–b–c–c–d–d–e–e–f–f. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... * The last stanza from lines nine to twelve, is a satirical view of Sassoon's greatest criticism and determination to revenge of those "smug–faced crowds", in verse 9, who "cheer when soldiers march by", in verse 10. He hated those who considered to be making a profit out of the war and those who were happy and proud their children going to serve their country: This creates a patriotic feeling. Moods/ Feelings * Bitter * Conscious * Anger * Rage * Antagonism * Resentment * The dominant mood of this poem is anger but there is also a feeling of sadness and sorrow about the young man's death. Personal Evaluation In my opinion war is evil and this poem gives us a good view on the reality of war and its consequences. This poem mainly criticises on the horrors of the war, the health conditions of the soldiers, the loneliness they had to face, patriotism of soldiers and the lack of resources that soldiers faced in the trenches. it made me think how inhumane the world that we are a part of is, that such horrible and indecent acts could be committed by humans. Having a young boy take such drastic measures is beyond my understanding for the time, the year which this poem was written but of course it must be understood because this was caused by the horrors of ... • 6. My Experience In Ww1 Trenches Ww1 trenches 1915 I wanted to join the Canadian military because I had pride in Canadian army and I wanted to serve for them. In my opinion, I thought it would be an adventurous as well. I had finished my training and I am being traveled to Germany to fight. I and my fellow allies were in trench warfare. All of us had different positions,i was a machine gunner which i thought was a horrible experience. I had a horrible experience in the trenches because there isn't just one or two people in trenches, but are more then 5 soldiers in trenches which makes it very crowded since your stuck in a trench. I was extremely unsatisfied when I discovered rats were in the trenches because they took our food and chewed on our clothes which we already had shortage on. This led to the Military Service Act and the Conscription Crisis of 1917 because of Borden's determination met huge commitment, which split the country on linguistic lines. One of the soldiers cleaning the weapons interrupted our discussion and added on to that Robert Borden is also causing trouble by joining the war the same time Britain because French Canadians don't want t be part of Britain in any way. • 7. The Death Of The Trenches Children are often considered carefree and innocent, which is the reason behind their state of happiness. They rarely cross paths with conflict from the outside world, but what happens when they become men and are sent off to fight in the war? Otto Dix's visual representation along with the poems, "Suicide in the Trenches" by Siegfried Sassoon, "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owens, and "Blessed Are" by Charles Peguy all capture the horrors and distress caused by World War 1. When it came time to enlist in the war, young men were ecstatic about becoming heroes by the act of serving their country. Although, in reality these men did not know the consequences that came with their life changing decision to go into combat. Sassoon's "Suicide in the Trenches" exposes the psychological issues that overwhelmed one soldier in particular, but as the reader, it is clear that the feelings described belong to any soldier that ever felt the wrath of the war. The first stanza paints a picture of a soldier who knows nothing of death or destruction. Line number three, specifically, reads "slept soundly through the lonesome dark" (Suicide in the Trenches). This shows that prior to the war, this soldier felt comfortable and safe within the walls of his home and most importantly, he felt safe within himself. The last mention of him is in the second stanza where it is revealed that he committed suicide. The last stanza could resemble a call of action. The narrator calls the civilians ... • 8. A Day At The Trenches Narrative Report I was more than grateful to discover a parcel of crackers and supplies arrive in my name. I thank you for your remarkable support towards me over the course of this seemingly endless war. After spending a year and a half under constant hell fire in a strange and distant place, I am more than eager to come home to you. When I initially enlisted in the Royal Army, I felt it was my duty to defend our glorious Empire against the malevolent hands of the vicious Jerries. I expected to gloriously march into Europe; but with every incident bringing me closer and closer to death, I feel as if I signed myself up for a suicide mission. The day I boarded the RMS Alaunia is still clear in my memory. Thousands of men like me were crammed into the vessel, anticipating the imminent adventure and the chance to travel abroad. Everyone was certain that this war would soon be over and that we would all peacefully return as a decorated war hero. After doing a mock attack at the park, I was ... We went through the daily ritual of stand to, followed by an order to stand down when it was clear the Germans wouldn't attack. The conditions of the trenches are sub par, with the constant infestation of rodents. For breakfast, we are given a slice of hard bread with a cup of tea to wash it down. I often spend the rest of my day standing on the fire–steps waiting for something to happen; But of course, little happened. Sometimes, men would be asked to go on a trench raid. If the attack was successful, the soldiers would receive a two week home leave along with some other supplies. I went on a couple of these missions, and I saw many of my friends get caught on barbed wire to picked away by machine gun. Millions of rats that grew the size of cats would infest the trenches, and lice would bother the soldiers every day. The trenches were long skinny ditches that were dug into the ground by the soldiers. Soldiers lived in these trenches all day and night. And would protect the soldiers. Trench warfare reached its highest development on the western front when armies of men faced each other in a line of trenches. • 12. Break Day In The Trenches The Western Front in World War One was a bleak place for soldiers. Men died from bullets, shrapnel, concussive blasts, gas, disease, dehydration, trench foot, and exposure. The life expectancy in the trenches was only six weeks (War History Online). In "Break Day in the Trenches", Isaac Rosenberg documents the feelings of a sentry at dawn. The sentry watches the sun begin to rise and plucks a poppy to put behind his ear. He watches a rat and internally converses with it, before coming under attack by an artillery barrage. In "Break Day in the Trenches", Isaac Rosenberg uses symbols of poppies and rats to support an implicit claim that death is always nearby on the front lines. In the first line of the poem, Rosenberg evokes imagery of death, writing, "The darkness crumbles away". Darkness and death have been conjoined in human consciousness since the beginning of time, and the use of the verb "crumbles" connotes decay and death. The narrator views the sunrise, normally a symbol of life and rebirth, as a symbol of death. He takes this unusual stance because dawn was a common time to begin artillery barrages in anticipation of an attack. Confirming the poem is taking place before a dawn barrage, the author calls no–man's–land "the sleeping green", with the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Living in the trenches have been one of the most hardest time in my life. Seeing all the dead bodies and see and the helpless has made me think about how lucky I am to be alive and writing this letter to you. A lot of my friends that I was talking to this morning have been killed or wounded. I can no longer see them and talk with them. It is a shame for all the people I know who have sadly gotten killed. These people stood up and fought for their country. The weather here has also been a pain to deal with. Having all the rain be collected into these trenches had made this war a lot more hard. Living conditions in the trenches were horrible and soldiers often developed trench foot, a disease caused by standing in water for long periods of time. Consequently, soldiers treated fresh boots as a luxury and therefore went to extreme lengths to getting them. "We have lost all sense of other considerations, because they are artificial. Only the facts are real and important for us. And good boots are scarce". (All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque, Pg.20). Trench Warfare In The Trenches Essay Soldiers within the trenches would illustrate their despair by singing, " We're here because we're here, we're here because we're here, we're here because we're here, we're here because we're here." World War 1 was ignited and many perceived it would be quick and easy. However, as trenches were dug, stalemate developed. The growing development of trench warfare was evident in the Western Front. As it revolutionized, the war slowed down, causing little victory, but high casualties within the Allies fighting in the Western Front – Britain, France, and the United States– as well as the Central Powers, consisting of Germany and Austria–Hungary. Later, trenches contained first– aid stations, and some even small kitchens. Most importantly, there were machine gun stations that would aid a soldier under attack, and dugouts that would sustain a large amount of troops during an assault. Most soldiers could spend up to two weeks in a trench at a time if they lived through it. First, they would spend time in the front line trench, fighting the enemy. Then, they would progress to the support trenches, and later rest. Even if the soldiers were not fighting, they were put to repair the trenches, move supplies, clean weapons, and undergo inspection or guard duty. Trenches had to be repaired constantly due to bombardment from the enemy or rain. In fact, daily life within the trenches was foreseeable, " Thirty minutes before sunrise, troops had to " stand to," ready to repel any attack. If no attack was forthcoming that day, the day's routine consisted of breakfast followed by inspection, sentry duty, restoration of the trenches, care of personal items, or whiling away the time as best they could." The day began with the stand–to in which soldiers would wake up an hour before dawn and stand on the firing step, rifles in hand, to look out for a predawn attack by the enemy (Feature Articles – Life in the Trenches). Each trench possessed a firing step, which was placed two to three feet from the trench floor to allow soldiers to peer over the trench and spot the enemy (Fire Step). Stand–to, which is short for 'stand–for–arms,' occurred because it was believed that just before dawn, when it was still dark, was the best time to mount an attack (Ellis 38). Both sides practiced this morning ritual. After stand–to and the morning hate, when both sides would relieve the tension of the morning by firing their machine guns in the air, an unofficial truce was called by the enemies for about an hour as they prepared and ate breakfast (Ellis 38). After breakfast, rifles were inspected and daily chores were appointed to the soldiers (Feature Article – Life in the Trenches). Superstition as an 'excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural' is often associated with perilous endeavours, and a psychological need to latch on to a mechanism to allow hope for the preservation of the fragile human condition. This systematic and illogical belief in the supernatural is extensively prevalent throughout Faulks' novel, during the linear storyline of Stephen and other orbital characters it is referenced through not only irrational fears but additionally rituals of extispicy. This thus deepens the contrast to the final section of the sentence which informs the reader that Weir is fascinated by thedivination taking place. Using the adjective 'fascinated' precisely aligns with imagery associated with a childlike fixation upon something, and so it can be extrapolated that in this case the object of the subject's curiosity is extispicy. That Weir can stomach such a ritual and remain engaged and 'fascinated' suggest that the character truly believes that this can determine his future with a degree of useful accuracy. This barbaric practice and all its derivatives collectively indicate the desperation of the soldiers and how they are left with no option but to cling on to any form of hope they can muster. As well as an air of hope, an underlying sense of ridicule and even mockery is brought to bear through Ellis' response to the ritualistic predictions, remarking that Stephen and Weir should be 'ashamed of themselves'. A depth of ignominy is acknowledged in this light, which evinces that certain soldiers believe such practice to be nonsense and that those who practice it should be embarrassed. Specific phrasing as 'you should be ashamed' stipulates an understanding that such behaviour was commonplace, as the characters are not ashamed, however it is of Ellis' opinion that they should be. It was a newer technique in battles as in wars prior to the Great World War, fighting was less invasive and men merely marched at each other from opposite ends of fields and fought until only one side remained standing or a white flag was hung high in surrender. In fact in older wars, the fighting was far less dangerous to the point where battles were often times viewed by locals who watched from side lines with really no threat of getting hurt. • 26. World War I : Trenches World War 1: Trenches Intro: The life for the average soldier in the WW1 trenches was pretty horrible. They had to live in mud, fellow dead soldiers and lots of rats, some the size of your hand. Life of a soldier was very tough, having to see your best mate get shot and he left to rot. Any soldiers that made it out of the war would have suffered either shell shock or post–traumatic stress disorder and living with either of these would have been terrible. Trenches were long, narrow ditches dug into the ground where soldiers lived day and night. There were many lines of German trenches on one side and many lines of the trenches on the allied side. In the middle there was no–man's land, so called because it didn't belong to either army. Soldiers crossed no– man's land when they wanted to attack. Soldiers in the trenches did not get much sleep, but when they did it was in the afternoon during daylight and at night for only 1 hour at a time. They were woken up at different times, either to complete one of the daily chores or the go to fight. The system of trenches was employed because a German commander, General Erich von Falkenhayn, decided that his troops must at all costs hold onto those parts of France and Belgium that Germany still occupied. Falkenhayn ordered his men to dig trenches that would provide them with protection from the advancing French and British troops. The Allies soon realised that they could not break through this line and they also began to dig trenches. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some men conceived an unmeasured hatred of these loathsome things, and were always trying to slaughter them. • 29. Analysis Of Suicide In The Trenches Suicide in the Trenches War, a slaughter of mankind that has gone on for hundreds and thousands of years. One of the most gruesome wars was WW1 which lasted for 4 years from 28 July 1914 – 11 November 1918. In this devastating war, the total number of casualties includes about 11 million military personnel and about 7 million civilians. Many of those soldiers were young men. The poem "Suicide in the trenches" written by Siegfried Sassoon describes the harsh experiences in the trenches and how many soldiers became depressed. Sassoon was an officer who earned a military cross after carrying a wounded soldier through enemy's crossfire. He fought in many battles until 1917 when he was hospitalised due to Shellshock. Sassoon criticized the political leaders who sent young men off to die in huge battles that seemed pointless, and while Sassoon was in Hospital he opposed the war by writing many poems, including "Does it Matter", "The Hero' and arguably the most tragic poem, "Suicide in the Trenches". But, both Owen and Sassoon had seen the horrors of trench warfare themselves and their poetry was therefore become realistic about the unforgiving realities of war. This title greatly contradicted the poems content, which described the gruesome death of a soldier from poisonous gas, which is a sickening and horrific, not sweet and fitting, way to die. In 'Suicide in the trenches' a rhythmic technique of iambic tetrameter was used to create irony. This creates a 'sing–song' effect, which is greatly contradicted by the diction of the poem. This essay aims to examine how detrimental life in the trenches on the Western front in World War one was to the average soldier. It attempts to answer the question what was life in the trenches like for the average soldier in the first World War? To fully and thoroughly understand the concepts oftrench warfare, this essay goes into depth on topics such as the set–up of trenches in comparison to those of their opposition, common disease in a trench, advantages and disadvantages of using trenches in battle, the weapons, communications, and strategies involved in the war, as well as the friendships gained whilst in battle and the role of the arts in World War one. Yet through disease, fear, and suffrage, the British scored a triumphant win. All of which had much to do with the advances of weaponry and trench warfare. Aside from who won the war, the events that went on in the trenches are what made it so unbearable for such a long period of time. Katznelson uses the Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods of northern Manhattan to explain the ethnic politics phenomena. The war, mostly occurred because allies attacked other countries which resulted in the countries allies to attack them. During this period of time people were miserable because most of their farmland was destroyed due to the war, but it was even worse for the soldiers because the war grounds were dangerous and the only safe places were the trenches. There more, WWI was one of the deadliest wars in the world, because it had many fatalities and was full of deadly weapons. The most deadliest parts of the war were fought in the Italian border and the alps which resulted in many casualties due to the dangerous terrain. In order to win a battle... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The War is an example of the evil man can do, because many soldiers showed no shame into killing their victim. We frequently refer to humans as the root of evil because we have no heart in what we do. Critical attributes of the war are ammunition and trenches because without ammunition you wouldn't be able to defend yourself, and trenches are one of the safest places to be during the war. A defining characteristic of the war is mobilization because you needed that to assemble troops and to get them ready for war. The key components of WWI are mostly trenches because it resulted in protection from the ammunition. An explanation of peace provides insight into the war because, like I said before there was no purpose in why they were fighting the war. Therefore, WWI had a significant impact on society because it resulted in many crops and land destroyed which shortened their food supply. One can trace the major causes of WWI to the allies because they fought with one and other. The critical factors was the assassination of Archduke Franz which resulted in the allies getting involved. Therefore the war was inhumane because people turned against each other, in which they tortured each other to death, which is awful because humans aren't supposed to be violent but, are to be peaceful ... • 36. Analysis Of Suicide In The Trenches The subject matter of suicide in the trenches is about the mental illness and severe depression of a young soldier in the trenches during world war 1. The soldier's depression is displayed clearly even before his suicide is described. This poem was written by Siegfried Sassoon to display the horrid conditions and mental state of young soldiers in the trenches during the war. It is intended to criticise the boredom, loneliness, health conditions and patriotism that many soldiers faced in the trenches. The poem describes the grief and depression that the soldiers felt during these times and opposes the war propaganda planned by the government. It is meant to convey the message that war was not a fun experience or adventure and that the conditions will drive many soldiers into depression or even suicide in extreme cases. The poem of suicide in the trenches has a structure and form of three, four line stanzas. It is a short poem, which creates a certain effect on the reader. The individual lines are also very short. The poem's length can be interpreted as a metaphor of the boy's life. The poem is short like the young boy's life, as he killed himself at a young age. This particular type of short structure is used to portray the short tragedy of the suicidal boy's life. The length of his life is used to portray the tragedy and horridness of the first world war and war in general. The tone of this poem starts of very melancholic and ends very angrily through using specific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Importance Of Daily Life In The Trenches Daily Life in the Trenches Outline I.Fighting "Stand–to": Also known as "Stand–to–Arms", the process was observed morning and night by both sides of the war. Each man had to climb up the fire step to guard against an attack from the enemy. Stand–to can last up to an hour, after which men are ordered to stand down for breakfast. This repetitive process later became known as "the morning hate". Most enemy attacks happened at dawn and dusk so the soldiers had to be aware of their surroundings. Attacks could happen when they least expect it. Trench warfare was so intense that 10% of all the soldiers who fought were killed. • 38. The Dangers of the Trenches Ww1 Introduction The Great War began in 1914 and lasted a gruelling 4 years. During this war, new and powerful weapons were developed such as machinery, guns and heavy artillery. Soldiers had no choice but to dig trenches, which were barely sustainable to live in, in order to protect themselves from the constant enemy gunfire. They lived, ate, slept and fought in these trenches for the whole 4 years... In this investigation I will thoroughly examine evidence from a whole range of resources to find out the extent of some of the misery and dangers in the trenches for the British and soldiers in World War One starting with miseries. Chapter 1 Was Life In The Trenches Miserable? The Food in the Trenches A huge amount of food was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While these soldiers are looking in good– health, soldiers often became ill after eating the poorly prepared food, which may carry parasites from water or unusual ingredients like plant weeds and mud when rations fell terribly low. Health and Hygiene Soldiers in the trenches face some of the most unhygienic environments known to man! The extent of the health problems is never fully understood. This is primarily because they were censored and only the war survivors lived to tell the stories about the problems. Some of the most obvious problems were the cold, mud and the harsh side effects of rough sleeping. In winter, warm cups of team would freeze in a couple of minutes& even if you took your boots off! The mud from the poorly made British trenches coated clothing in just a few hours and was rarely changed, leaving the body to bath in bacterial growth and sweat! In severe cases, one solider spend 42 days of 1915 without removing his socks and boots. Some soldiers did sometimes do this intentionally to get out of the front line fighting and even faced trench foot and risk of amputation to escape the harsh environment. Body Lice One of many problems was body lice infestation within the trenches which made life extremely difficult! One soldier said they were 'pale fawn in colour, and they left blotchy red markings all over the body'. They also left a vile smell. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Suicide in the Trenches- Analysis Suicide In The Trenches In my analysis, I will demonstrate how Siegfred Sassoon has used many different language techniques to show his perspective on the true meaning of war. For example, the poet has used simplistic diction that creates an image of the destruction of a "simple soldier boy". At first we see him whistling, this then degrades to depression which lead him to committing suicide. Siegfred Sassoon concludes his poem with anger and a powerful message. "Sneak home and pray you'll never know" emphasizes that those who aren't soldiers have to "sneak home and pray" to show their empathy for the soldiers. In the last line it implies the fact that the crowd doesn't have to go through "the hell where youth and laughter go". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... the rhyme of "brain" and "again" at line eight tries to form a connection that although a young boy was convinced to join the war and fought tremendously for his country and himself. However, in the end, he was pushed to his limit and "no one spoke of him again". This shows how cruel and selfish war is. The boy had sacrificed his childhood fun, laughter and playful life in for nothing to return. This is effective because it makes the reader think about 'why is there war' and 'why are there innocent lives at risk' which creates the bitter mood. The diction used in the poem sends the reader a clear message about war. In the last stanza, the word "kindling" is being used to describe the "eyes" of the "smug–faced crowds". "Kindling" is used to describe the facial description which shows that it is a very shallow expression feature that expresses the lack of empathy shown to the young men. However, Siegfried tries to show with a sarcastic tone that they think war is a glorious thing; they feel proud of the children risking their lives with nothing in return and seem to understand and appreciate what they are doing. But in reality the public cannot imagine what these children are going through. This is how the word "kindling" reveals a shallow side of everyone's personality. In my personal opinion, the last stanza is the strongest and most impactful stanza. While the previous two stanzas shows the transformation of the boy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Uses Of Trenches In WWI Uses Of Trenches In WWI Although some people might say that world war 1 was won only by man power it was real won with the great use of trenches. The front line trench covered soldiers from enemy fire. The support trench provided a security for the front line trench. Reserve trench supported the trench with artillery fire, and other utilities. The trenches were the main place that the war took place. The trenches provided cover and shelter for the soldiers. According to the British Library the soldiers maintained a specific schedule with simple rotations containing rest, work, and war itself. "The frontline troops themselves were rotated to ensure that time spent facing the enemy was balanced by periods of rest and, occasionally, home–leave."(British library) This rotation kept the soldiers spirits up allowing them to rest, then get up and keep fighting. "The determination of soldiers to keep fighting could be strongly influenced by the regularity of this rotation."(British library) The sanitation of soldiers was very bad this caused many soldiers to be depressed and have a low morale. They had to crawl around in mud, see their friends die, and shair sleeping space with rats."I am young, I am twenty years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The support trench could also be used as a frontline trench in case the frontline trench is over run by the enemy troops. According to Trenches During WWI these trenches were very different from the frontline trenches, unlike the frontline trench instead of being built in zig zags, it was built in a straight line. • 41. Break Of Day In The Trenches Interestingly, not all WWI literature is violent like one may reasonably suspect. What I find interesting about WWI literature–– and a lot of good war literature–– is how it creates feelings of calmness in situations that are clearly not calm. An example of this is seen in the poem "Break of Day in the Trenches." While in trenches, a muddy, uncomfortable, coffin–like, mess, the narrator talks about pulling "..the parapet's poppy / To stick behind my ear" (Rosenberg 2030). Essentially, even while in combat, and in a terrible place, the narrator finds a flower and decorates himself with it. This is very odd: the beauty of the poppy does not belong in trenches. Yet there it exists, and the narrator takes note! Further, in "Memoirs of an Infantry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. My Life In The Trenches Today was one of the hardest days I have experienced in my lifetime. We dug trenches, moved equipment, and repaired broken equipment from sun up until sun down. To make this even worse, all day the wind blew fiercely towards our trenches forcing us to endure the horrific stench of the soldiers who have lost their lives in no man's land. I feel so horrible for the families of those lost brothers of mine. They will never have the opportunity to give their sons, husbands, fathers, and brothers a proper burial. It can get depressing here in these trenches as I do nothing but stare at the sky for hours on end with no sign of life in sight. I try to keep my mind busy, but every still moment my mind goes back to my brothers I have lost. I try to justify... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are positioned at the point where the River Aisne and River Oise meet. We know that holding our ground is important because if some how they were to break through our trenches here they would have clear access to Chantilly and then they would move to our most beloved city, Paris. Although we know that holding our ground is very important, we had hoped for a chance to drive those nasty Germans back to where they came from. The day started slow, the sleep I longed for had eluded me as normal. Being tired in battle was no good thing, and almost no one on our side got much sleep. Thankfully, we're sure no one on the other side got much sleep either. In the wee hours of the morning before daybreak we prepared for battle. I had all those feelings rushing back to me; scared, anxious, excited, and nervous. Once we felt we were ready we all quickly headed for our posts. There was no good way to fight a battle in these trenches. Whoever got chosen to attempt an attack was almost surely dead as soon as the orders were sent. Running across no man's land was one of the most treacherous tasks we ever had. I have only been sent out twice, luckily both times I have been able to retreat back to our trenches safely after our job was done. Both sides ran at each other like this all day during battles. As you can tell this hardly lead to any good as hundreds died and only feet were gained if you were lucky. Today was no different, we engaged in this same type of warfare for hours. I saw fellow soldiers die attempting to cross to the German's side, and I even personally pulled the trigger on Germans who attempted to cross to our side. Many soldiers say they struggle when killing others, but honestly I do not. I have seen too many of my brothers shot by those Germans across from us that I find pride in ...
