Sleeping Beauty By Charles Perrault
Throughout history the soulful tale of "Sleeping Beauty" has been told many times, and each time
the characters and storyline changes, we learn more about the characters themselves, and why they
do what they do.
Sleeping beauty although, a childhood favorite is actually a shockingly violent narrative compared
to the one we all know and love. It has changed in order to fit social norms for the time and the
context has been altered to appeal to the current audiences of that time.
In the first edition of Sleeping Beauty written in 1697 by Charles Perrault "The sleeping Beauty in
the wood", is a tale of rape, adultery and cannibalism. Beauty is seen to be an innocent naïve young
girl, not much of a change from modern times, however prince charming, is not quite charming but
rather violent, not only a kiss occurs, but rape. Charming's character is known to be intoxicatingly
sweet, sincere and full of nothing but charm, here he's nothing but a monster, he simply rapes beauty
while deep in slumber, conceives two children and it ends with everyone eating each other.
"...He left her kissing her children and weeping over them, and went into kill a young doe that the
queen mother ate for supper with as much relish as if it had been her daughter–in–law. She was very
pleased with her own cruelty" (pg.76,"sleeping Beauty of the wood"). Modern times has definitely
made it a more "child friendly" tale cutting out the adultery and adding fairies and glitter instead
making the prince appear

The Tale Of Fairy Tales
Fairy Tales were use as children's bedtime stories and at often times it teaches a lesson. Many of
these tales were originally passed down orally and it was popular among the peasants. Only recently,
a couple hundred years ago, has these tales been written down because back in the days many
people were illiterate. Even though the adults maybe reading the stories to the child, the child often
alters it. That's why there's so many different version of the same stories. In most Fairy Tales the
villains were either dismissed or die in some horrible death while the "good guys" be victorious.
This theme occurs in Fairy Tales like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Red Ridding
Hood, and Hansel and Gretel. These ending in a way teaches the children a lesson. In the Cinderella
stories, the stepsisters unlike the Disney version, were strike with ill fates. In the Brother Grimm's
version, Cinderella's real mother said, "Dear child, if you are good and say you prayers, our dear
Lord will always be with you, and shall look down on you from heaven and always be with you
(117)." When Cinderella followed her mother's words the animals around her help her out during her
times of need, which allow her to meet her prince eventually. But her stepsisters along with the
stepmother did not follow those rules, instead they fill themselves with jealousy and evil deeds,
which lead to their down fall. Around the time when this version of Cinderella was created it was a

The Sweet Hereafter and "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" Essay
"The Sweet Hereafter and the Pied Piper"
A tragic event can occur in no longer than a moment and produce a domino effect that can change
everything in your life. The book "The Sweet Hereafter" by Russell Banks contains such an event.
This book has a modernized undertone of the folk tale "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert
Browning. This tale is carried throughout the books entirety. Both of these stories show connections
in many ways and almost parallel one another in their basic plot of showing the painful effects
disaster can have on a small town. While the people of Hamlin had the Piper to directly blame for
their miseries, the people of Sam Dent did not.
Both stories are based on the loss of the children in a small ... Show more content on

At the end of the book "The Sweet Hereafter" one of the only children left to survive the accident is
a young girl named Nicole Burnell. Though she escapes narrowly with her life she is crippled and
confined to a wheelchair thereafter. Her dreams of becoming a beauty queen or a rock star are
dashed. Similarly in the tale of "The Pied Piper" the town is left with only one child who is crippled
and thus was unable to keep up with the rest of the children as they followed the Piper into the cave
dancing in an enchanted trance.
In both stories we later learn that these characters whom are left behind almost wish they had not
been spared. The crippled boy from "The Pied Piper" is in fact said to be sad at not being able to
share "all the pleasant sights" that he believes his playmates are seeing in a heaven–like land
described to them by the Piper himself. In the time immediately following the accident Nicole
Burnell could be described as having these similar feelings. In reality both of these characters
disabilities ended up saving them. In the case of the crippled boy his lameness kept him from being
taken away forever by the Piper, like all the other children. In the case of Nicole Burnell her gained
disability gave her control and power over the incestuous situation she was in with her own father, it
saved her from further sexual abuse.
In the tale of the Pied Piper

Conventional Gender Roles Are Embedded Into Our Stories...
Conventional gender roles are embedded into our stories creating the idea of "princess culture". This
"princess culture" creates the idea that girls have to become both Cinderella and Supergirl. This
concept also brings "happily ever after" into the mix, creating the masculine prince who saves the
princess or is arm candy at the end of the fairytale. While this format is much beloved by many
including myself, there are many lesser known fairy tales which make important breaks in these
gender norms. By looking under the surface one sees that The Twelve Dancing Princesses by
Marianna Mayer breaks the "princess culture" gender roles, having strong women defying the rules
as well as the "prince" undermining the classic notion of a hero in the princess narrative.
The 12 Dancing Princesses by Marianna Mayer takes place in a mysterious world where upon
waking the King finds his 12 daughters' shoes completely worn through. A young gardener is able to
solve the mystery by tricking the princesses into thinking that he is asleep while secretly following
them in his invisibility cloak. The gardener discovers that the young princesses secretly go off to a
beautiful ball every night and dance the night away. He steals three golden branches and a golden
cup as proof of the beautiful night that he witnessed. The youngest daughter finds out Peter has
discovered their secret when he puts one of the branches in her bouquet. When Peter finally explains
to the King what has happened, he

Fairytales : ' Once Upon A Time ' How Fairytales Shape Our...
For millions of years, we always wondered why society continues to tell stories that was created
many years ago. Some people feel that by telling these stories it allows them to revert back on their
childhood lives. Writers began to prove that continuing these stories not only reverts a person back
to their childhood, but it carries out different values meant to gain through them. I personally agree
that fairytales are told to gain life lessons. Although various people have come up with theories, but
no one really knows why we continue these stories. Jonathan Young wrote an essay for Inside
Journal magazine called "Once Upon a Time, How Fairytales Shape Our Lives." In his essay he
began to explain why he believed that we continue to tell these stories or fairytales. One of the
reasons he says is that fairytales take us back to a place of innocence as a kid. I think that when we
do tell fairytales that it does allow us to go back to the time where a little bit of nothing meant a
whole lot of something to us. As a kid I would often experience this type of effect when I was told a
fairytale. The meaning behind saying that a little bit of nothing meant a whole lot of something to us
simply says that we valued the content rather than the meaning of the tale. As we grew older we
generally like to be reverted back to this time when genuine happiness came from just about
anything that could be imagined. The imagination throughout an individual differs from one person
to the next

Charles Perrault’s Fairytales
The Introduction:
Fairytales are stories that have some magical aspects. They usually tell a story about a castle and
times when kings ruled the land. I always loved the princesses in these stories. When I was young, I
would dress up as them. My friends and I would act out the stories. They usually teach a lesson. I
always wanted the princess to escape of find a happy ending. Most fairytales end with "Happily ever
after."
Stories give us a distraction and a fantasy from real life. Stories give us a somewhat perfect picture
of life. We try to make our lives reflect the story in some way. Most people even paint others as evil
or mean, like the villains in the story. This paper's purpose is to incorporate fairy tales and their ...

She is faced with troubles trying to prohibit her from her happy ending, of marrying the prince.
Another fairy tale that is very well–liked is "Little Red Riding Hood." In this story, Little Red
Riding Hood is on a quest to go to her grandmother's house. An evil wolf tricks her and ends up
eating her in the end. The readers of fairy tales have been using these stories as examples for their
lives, since the 18th century.
Since fairy tales set and example for real life situations, it is important to see the naivety of the main
character is a main reason why the evil enemies are able to take advantage of them so effortlessly. In
the fairy tale, "Sleeping Beauty in the Wood", the princess' curiosity captivates her and she pricks
her finger, on the spindle. The evil old fairy barely had to use her magic powers on the girl. In
"Little Red Riding Hood", her curiosity of the grandma's different looks and gullibility gets her
close enough to the wolf for her to be eaten, in the end. Also, in the fairy tale "Blue Beard", the
young wife wants to open the locked closet door. Her curiosity guides her to do so, which leads her
husband to put her in a dangerous situation and almost death. Therefore, it is important to realize
and understand the naivety of characters in the stories and their confrontations with evil characters.
Fairy tales offer a solution to the problem faced in the story, with

The Authors of the Literary Fairy Tale Essay
The Authors of the Literary Fairy Tale When asked to name authors of fairy tales, most people now
(if they knew at all) would answer the Grimm Brothers or Charles Perrault, and perhaps Hans
Christian Andersen. Yet throughout history, fairy tales have been women's stories, passed down
orally by the mothers and grandmothers. When the tales began to be a literary form, the number and
output of female authors vastly exceeds that of the males. The Grimm Brothers collected their tales

The cruelty of enforced marriages is remarked on by the heroines of many of her stories, and the
tales of other women of the time. 30 years after fleeing Paris (she returned in 1685), Mme d'Aulnoy
is thought to have assisted a friend to kill her husband, who had abused her. The friend was
beheaded. The Countess de Murat was banished from Louis XIV's court in Paris for publishing a
political satire about him; she then shocked the people of Loches, where she had her chateau, by
holding gatherings where she and her friends would dance, talk, and tell fairy tales, as in the salons
of Paris. Her tales concern marriage, the power struggles of the aristocracy, and true love. They do
not always have a happy ending, either. Marie–Jeanne L' Heritier led a less controversial life. She
did not marry, choosing to dedicate herself to writing. Her father was a historian and writer, her
sister was a poet. She was also the niece of Charles Perrault, and quite likely influenced his
interested in fairy tales. Her "Adventures of Finette" features a a heroine who wins by her wits, in
spite of two lazy sisters and an evil prince. Voicing the Unspoken In a time of political censorship,
where women had few rights, fairy tales were one way that they could make their opinions known.

Essay about Fairy Tales, The Hidden Meaning
Fairy Tales: The Hidden Meaning. True love stories are typically not found on television; but can be
found in the older books of fairytales. Fairytales have not been always written because before people
could write, fairytales would be spoken and passed on from generation to generation. Although large
numbers of literary fairy tales were written in 17th century France, most of the tales which are still
told and retold now are far older in origin. The first published fairytales happened in 1667; a cycle
of fifty tales was published by Giambattista Basile (Hasse 32). Of course these publications were not
the exact fairytales that were created because many of them were butchered when being passed
down. Although many people associate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dominant character sticks out significantly in fairytales and have an immense influence on how
the fairytale plays out. The character affects all every man or woman underneath them, and through
fairytales, we can see how they were portrayed in historic times.
Historically, women were looked down upon in society as the second–grade gender because they
were not considered to be strong enough for outside work such as hunting, field work and so forth.
Instead, women were largely looked upon as the breeders, cookers, and the babysitters of children.
Society's appreciation of women was little compared that to of men since the men were bringing the
money and the food they ate, they were thought to be superior. Surprisingly, most fairy tales have
women as one of the main characters who happen to learn lessons, become better people, and then
have better lives overall. At least, that is what most people think that is what fairy tales are telling
them because of how they are portrayed to seem like that the woman are becoming better people. In
the story of Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red Riding Hood is a girl supposedly going through the
woods to give her grandma some treats, but encounters a wolf that tries to eat her. Somehow she
escapes and saves her grandmother and is portrayed as a hero "As for her character, Little Red
Riding Hood has been described as pretty and lovely, but too gullible and naive. Sometimes she has

banks fail and we go into a recession. He confirms that financial officials will use prefer stocks
compared to common stocks because they wanted to not nationalize the banks and to keep
capitalism. Pozen presents an idea on how the United States financial regulation should be

Cinderella Syndrome Essay
Cinderella Syndrome
I think the time has come for someone to write "Cinderella: The Sequel."
How did we get here? In 1697, French writer Charles Perrault updated an age–old fairy tale about a
young woman named Cinderella to appeal to his contemporaries, French nobility and bourgeoisie.
So many of the early versions of the tale boasted a very resourceful young woman who played an
active role in her destiny. Perrault, however wrote his Cinderella as a well–mannered, docile,
selfless women who would fit seamlessly with the ideal 17th century upper–class society.
Historically, fairy tales have reflected the values of society in which they were written or revised
mirroring its preoccupations, obsessions, ambitions, and shortcomings. What do ... Show more

As I imagine it, we'd joined by Cinderella and the Handsome Prince shortly after they returned from
their honeymoon. We would see them discover how different their tastes and priorities were when
they go shopping to furnish the palace. We would see them run up bills and debts by trying to do
much too fast, and they'd fight about whose fault their extravagances had been.
Common sense and love would prevail. They'd get on a budget and the storm would pass. A couple
of years into the marriage, the Handsome Prince would get involved with a merger and acquisitions
of the neighboring county, and he'd be gone a lot on business trips.
The stress and loneliness of long separations would lead to disagreements, but again love would
prevail. Then a child would be born to Cinderella and the Prince meaning more stress. The child
would be diagnosed with a learning disability and Cinderella and the Prince would each wonder
whether the cause might have been the other's having parties too hard in their younger days.
Their feelings of guilt and blame would generate into quarrels. A second child would be born. More
changes and more stress. Cinderella's mother in–law would sometimes interfere and criticize their
parenting. Bickering would continue and get worse.
Then Cinderella and the Handsome Prince would go to a marriage counselor. They tried to learn to
appreciate each other's different points of view. They also, tried to learn

Charles Perrault’s Cinderella
In "Cinderella" by Charles Perrault, the story depicts an imaginative fairytale through the hardships
of a mistreated daughter and the magic of a fairy; in essence, Cinderella demonstrates that focusing
on materialism is more important and more effective other than working up the path to majesty.
Cinderella is a character who is often mistreated by her stepmother and god sisters. Bearing
unsuitable personalities, they treat her harshly, leaving all of the chores to her. However, she admits
that her tattered clothes are not worthy of a formal event, and continues to be belittled by her
stepsisters. Portrayed with low self–esteem and insecurity, she does not respond harshly to their
cruel insults. As a result, the main character relies on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, her true beauty lies within her skin, as Perrault's interprets Cinderella as "a hundred times
more handsome than her sisters". He aims to focus more on female recognition and self–fulfillment,
rather than provide a base for all readers to understand fully (Hühn). At an elementary level, this
may not influence children to an extent, but other stories that reproduce this same structure of plot
elements could possibly influence children in the future. For instance, she was not the hero of the
story. The Prince isn't the hero until he discovers her lost possession, a glass slipper, and searched
for the person that fits. As told by Perrault, "he had done nothing but look at her all the time, and
that most certainly he was very much in love with the beautiful owner of the glass slipper." This
enforces the fact that her beauty prevails over her actual personality but not behavior, and the
appearance and mannerisms surely impressed the Prince. The Prince stereotypes the role of women
being in need of a destined lover. He is the one that identifies Cinderella as the one in the dress,
though excluding behavior, her appearance dazzles him for two nights at the ball. Most importantly,
he's not the hero of the fairytale, but readers can interpret the fairy godmother as the savior of
Cinderella's demise. The role of magic comes in part with the acceptance of achieving the imagery
of an elegant woman, impressing the Prince who gains interest in her. The

Analysis Of The Book ' Little Red Cap ' By Angela Carter
Fairytales subvert, challenge or reaffirm archetypal values through didactic lenses. The presence of
universal themes allows for an examination of contextual shifts and by being malleable in nature,
can be made relevant to different audiences. The Brothers Grimm 's "Little Red Cap", Angela
Carter's 'The Company of Wolves" and Tommy Wirkola 's film, "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters"
all promote their hegemonic ideologies and as 'cultural artefacts' extrapolate the contextual values of
their time period. Carl Jung 's theory of the 'Collective Unconscious" ensures that each of these
fairytale adaptations can retain their archetypal value and thus remain significant and relevant in
contemporary circumstances.
The Brother Grimm's 19th Century Fairytale, "Little Red Cap" reflects the hegemonies of its context
through its cautionary justification. Grimm's work reflected the importance of German national
cohesion under French occupation and the view towards foreigners as destructive usurpers. "Little
Red Cap" was adapted for instructional purposes, specifically aimed at a children 's audience.
Initially in the tale, the subversion of Perrault's depiction of the girl is evident exemplifying her as a
"sweet" little girl and the hyperbolic "everybody loved her instantly on first sight" demonstrates the
engrained virtue of her youth. The instruction for Little Red Cap to "not stray from the path"
foreshadows the inherent danger associated with a misguided venture. The symbolism of

Comparison of Two Versions of Cinderella: Grimm vs. Perrault
A lot of the fairy tale stories that we have seen as young adults and even as adults are original folk
tale stories that have been modified and rewritten to accommodate our new cultures. Cinderella
happens to be one of these stories that have been changed over the years. There are many different
versions of Cinderella, an African Cinderella, a Hungarian Cinderella and even a Chinese version.
All of the Cinderella's are similar in plot, but the author dictates the story's theme based on the
people whom he is writing for which completely changes the story's tone, mood and other elements.
While Perrault's version stresses the values and materialistic worries of his middle–class audience,
Grimm's' focus is on the harsh realities of life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cinderella goes to her mother's grave and cries about how poorly and inhumanely she is getting
treated, she tries satisfying her wicked step–mother, but she is never successful. The Grimm brothers
had a different audience to satisfy so their story tone is darker and deeper. Their main concern was
for the audience to sympathize with Cinderella and emotionally connect with her. The Little Glass
Slipper, Perrault's version of Cinderella also has a different ending. The ending is happier and
includes forgiveness. Although the step sisters were cruel and treated Cinderella horribly she
forgave them in the end and even found good husbands for them, and they all lived happily ever
after. You see from this that this story is intended to teach a moral lesson of forgiveness and
kindness. In Perrault's version you can be terrible and unpleasant but you will be forgiven because
that's part of life. The Grimm brothers however have a different point of view on that matter. They
feel that what you do will come back to haunt you and you can't be a sinful person and be forgiven.
Cinderella was always kind and compassionate and she got rewarded for that, she married the prince
and escaped her horrible life. She no longer weeps at her mother's grave and cries herself to sleep.
The step sisters on the other hand, even though Cinderella forgave them, they didn't get forgiven by

Original Recordings Of British American Marchen Essay
One of the earliest recordings of British American Märchen in the Archive of Folk Culture includes
Sam Harmon's rendition of "Stiff Dick", a Jack tale parallel to the "Brave Little Tailor" included in
the Grimm Brother's Household Tales. These stories begin with Jack traveling the country usually
looking for work. He encounters a group of insects, sometimes butterflies, most often house flies,
and kills multiple with a stick or wooden paddle in one swing. The most common number killed is
seven, whereby Jack proceeds to have a belt or belt buckle made to announce his accomplishment.
In the Jack, "Stiff Dick" versions, the lettering reads, "Stiff Dick, killed seven with one lick!" In less
suggestive versions, the message reads, "Strong man Jack, killed seven at a whack!" After the belt or
belt buckle is made, Jack encounters the authority figure of the region who misunderstands the
meaning of the message. The king, wealthy land owner, or lord of the region offers Jack a task based
on his perception that Jack is a fierce fighter. The first task is to remove a wild boar that has been
terrorizing the area, killing livestock and injuring people. Jack is offered a significant amount of
money for the removal of the threat because all other men of the expanse are frightened. Jack is
fearful of the boar himself, and decides to pretend to accept the offer but planning to slip out of the
territory instead. While trying to escape the boar's domain, he instead runs across the animal

Death, The Tell Tale Heart, By The Grimm Brothers
Death is a concept in the theme that has a presence in the short stories Godfather Death, The Tell–

unavoidable shadow in the character faces death becomes a companion to the namaste.
Death is part of the theme in the story Godfather Death. "Godfather Death" by the Grimm brothers
is a story that tries to make sense out of why people have to pass away. Death is unavoidable to
every being. The godson in this story wanted to cheat death, he was not ready to give up his life. He
tried to get death himself to give him more life but as the man found out that is not possible. The
story explains in a strange way that when your life candle is to burn out and you are to pass away
there is no way to avoid it. Death takes his godson to the underworld to show him why he must take
life when the time has come. The godson begs him not to take his life and explains he only cheated
Death because he wanted to marry the beautiful princess and become the King. "That I cannot do,"
Death replies. "One candle must first go out before a new one is lighted." (Grimm) ( 15). He
explains that his short candle may be put on top of a long candle so his life does not expire. Death
tricks the man and says he will do this, but he stumbles and the candle goes out leaving the man
lifeless. In the poem "Because I could not stop for Death" the character accepts that his time has

A Brief Look at the Brothers Grimm
How many little girls dream of being Snow White? How much money did Disney's Tangled make?
What little girl hasn't dressed up as Cinderella or dreamed of meeting her very own prince
charming? These popular fairy tales were created by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Their primary
motivation when starting their collection of fairy tales was to preserve culture rather than entertain,
but entertain is what they did. These fairy tales, and versions of them, have remained popular for a
very long time, outlasting most other works of literature. The Brothers Grimm adapted these well–
known stories from around Europe to reflect their own personal views, Germanize them and remove
some of the more disturbing details of the original stories. In the same way, these fairy tales have
been altered again and again to be acceptable to society. Fairy tales similar in theme can be found
across the world. The Brothers Grimm versions are the most familiar because their emphasis on
German culture and Christian morals is very similar to American culture and values. The
adaptability and skillful incorporation of morals and issues considered socially unacceptable in an
entertaining story, has allowed the Brother's fairy tales to last throughout the ages. One of the most
popular of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales is Snow White. In the original version, the theme was
that of a mother–daughter rivalry, but the Grimm brothers changed many elements so that it would
more closely reflect their values. In the

Female Antagonists Within Fairy Tales
Whether Female antagonists within fairy tales are portrayed in a positive or negative light their roles
within the stories are very important if not crucial to the development of the protagonists. Karen
Rowe in "Feminist and fairy tales" explains the divide between different female antagonists. Female
antagonist come in all forms, Faeries, ogresses, evil queens, and evil witches step mothers and or
step sisters. For the most part these characters are often divided between good and evil, or light and
dark, but what is often realized, is that there isn't much of a combination between the two groups in
which an antagonist falls in between both categories. In this essay I will lay out the thematic roles of
these different types of female antagonist's portrayed within fairy tales. Negative female antagonist
play a very particular role within fairy tales. The female antagonists are often very dominant, they
are not married and unable to bare children due to the fact that they are usually old. However there
are times in which the antagonist is a beautiful women who's jealously often overbears her physical
appearance. In "Snow White" Snow's Step mother is constantly looking for assurance about her
physical appearance, so she confides in her magic mirror, "Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who in this
land is fairest of all?" (Grimm 54). Snow white's stepmother is taken aback and enraged after later
being told that she is no longer the prettiest woman. "You my queen, are fair; it is

Women Of The Times Of Fairy Tales And Fantasy Writing
During the times of fairy tales and fantasy writing, there was a considerable amount of inequality
between genders. As such during this time period, stories that were written most likely would have
been written in a form that showed influence from the society of the author(s). I will be using the
stories of: "Rapunzel", "Rumpelstiltskin", "Cinderella", "Frog Prince", "Snow White", and "Hansel
and Grethel" to represent the inequalities between the genders. These stories all have the common
theme of men doing an action and women getting punished for it most of the time.
In the story of "Rapunzel," the main character that the story is centered upon is a female. This
female, "Rapunzel," was depicted as a very incompetent and inferior ... Show more content on

The same is shown for the king. "Now set yourself to work, and if you have not spun this straw into
gold by an early hour to–morrow you must die" (Rumpelstiltskin, Grimm 192). This quote shows an
innocent girl being threatened by a man that she will die if she does not do what he asks. This man
does not get punished, much like the other man, but yet the female who did nothing wrong to start
with was about to be punished by having her newborn taken away from her in the story

Literature and Fairy Tales Are an Important Part of Society
Literature has always been a part of society. Some are deemed superior to others and have unique,
artistic merit. Some are read as adolescents. A large portion of literature for growing children is fairy
tales. Modern fairy tales are about Alice falling down a rabbit hole, into Wonderland, or Dorothy
traveling to Oz. The old classics are Cinderella and her glass slipper, or the adventures of Peter Pan
in Neverland. These are stories that are suppose to teach younger to be good when they grow up. It
teaches them to follow their dreams and express themselves. It's wonderful way to teach children
how to read and how to dream.

In 2010, Disney make a its version of the Grimm Brother's Rapunzel and named it Tangled. These
films go all the way back to 1937, when Walt Disney created their first animated film, Snow White,
which was also based off of the Grimm Brother's stories.
The fairy tale stories presented today isn't entirely useless. A certified Speech–Language

adults [need for] daily life demands." There are many different levels of play pretend, but the
imaginations begins to develop from twelve month old babies to five year old kids. Play pretend
exercises a child's imagination that's needed in the future, and it also teaches to how to interact with
other people. Lowry promotes the encouragement of playing pretend to improve language and skills.
Fairy tales promotes imagination and creativity among the growing minds of kids. There's also a
magical element. It's a world of make–believe and it can ensnare any child's attention quickly. In

Analysis Of Disney 's ' Fairy Tales '
Did you know that your favorite fairytales were once violent? Originally, Grimm's Fairy Tales were
intended for children to read. However, because they contained remarkably dark elements, parents
soon believed these stories were too violent for their children. Eventually, only adults read the tales.
In the 1950s, Walt Disney created a non–violent version of the classic Grimm fairytale, Cinderella.
Walt Disney's cinematic version is more accessible to a wider audience than the Grimm tale because
Disney removed most of the violence and simplified the tale while maintaining the original story. In
order to reach a wider audience, Disney's first strategy was to remove the violence from the story for
the film. Disney movies are made precisely for young children, so they produce movies to be
cheerful, appropriate, and non–violent. In the Brothers Grimm tale, the two stepsisters will stop at
nothing to make the slipper fit. When they could not get their toe or heel into the shoe, their mother
gave them a knife and said, "Cut the toe off, for when you are queen you will never have to go on
foot." (Grimm 126) or "Cut a bit off your heel. When you are queen you will have no need to go on
foot." (Grimm 126) In the Disney movie, the stepsisters ' just force their feet into the shoe then give
up. The movie also omits the pigeons pecking out the stepsisters' eyes, leaving them to live as blind
beggars for the rest of their lives. The Disney version ends when the prince finds

Analysis Of ' Cinderella ' By Jakob And Wilhelm Grimm '
Analysis of "Cinderella" Majority of fairy tales, including "Cinderella" by Jakob and Wilhelm
Grimm, have a complex moral along with life lessons behind the story line. Due to this, famous
scholars such as Maria Tatar, study these fairy tales. In Tatar's essay, she states that "Even fairy tales,
with their naïve sense of justice, their tenacious materialism, their reworking of familiar territory,
and their sometimes narrow imaginative range, rarely send unambiguous messages" (232). She is
stating this to put forward that all fairy tales, including Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm's version of
"Cinderella" "rarely send unambiguous messages" (232). In Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm's version of
"Cinderella", they start by talking about a sick mother who soon dies. Before she dies, she tells her
daughter, Cinderella, that god will protect her if she is good and pious. The mother then dies, and the
father remarries to a beautiful woman with two daughters that are regularly cruel to Cinderella. One
day Cinderella's father goes into town and asks the girls if they pursue anything special from town,
the two step sisters say they want dresses and jewelry and Cinderella says she wants him to break
off the first branch that he runs into on his way home and the father does so. When Cinderella
receives her gift she plants it by her mother's grave, then weeps and cries over the branch because of
her mother's passing. The branch soon begins to grow into a handsome tree. Along with the tree

Perspectives on Gender Roles: Snow White and Mirrors Essay
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, our lives are a mirror, reflection is a must..." (Lynda Meyers) Disney
did a rather good representation on the Grimm brother's original fairytale. In both stories Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs conveys a message about the mirror representing a sense of self on a
superficial and deep emotional level. It reinstates many cultural roles that have been put upon both
woman and men. It is a story of self discovery and whether or not the characters are able to develop
throughout the story in relation to the affects to a "real life individual". A common theme in Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs for both the Disney film and the 1812 Grimm's fairytale story is that
beauty is pain. Women subject themselves to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though women have made considerable progress in our society today, our culture today still
floods girls with the demands to conform to very slim principles of beauty. All one has to do is
watch television, a movie and even the in the advertisements, to be reminded of how women should
look. Based only on the mirror's words in the story, the Disney's group has personified the mirror as
a sort of flaming masculine character. The queen relies on this masculine 'authority' to tell her if she
is beautiful or not. It is not providing ample mirroring, but instead, mainly reflecting back to girls
what the cultural ideal is. The stories reinstate this idea females already have. Though, another
aspect is that one often looks into one's unconscious when looking into the mirror. Both the original
story and the Disney movie tell us how to develop and integrate conflicting aspects of ourselves as
our personal unconscious map unfolds. (Flynn, 2005) In the beginning of the story Snow White is
both innocent and immature. She lacks a caring mother figure within. There are also ten men in the

Essay Classic Fairy Tales: Annotated Bibliography
In his evaluation of Little Red Riding Hood, Bill Delaney states, "In analyzing a story . . . it is often
the most incongruous element that can be the most revealing." To Delaney, the most revealing
element in Little Red Riding Hood is the protagonist's scarlet cloak. Delaney wonders how a peasant
girl could own such a luxurious item. First, he speculates that a "Lady Bountiful" gave her the cloak,
which had belonged to her daughter. Later, however, Delaney suggests that the cloak is merely
symbolic, perhaps representing a fantasy world in which she lives.

McGovern's evaluation of The Emperor's New Clothes begins with a brief history, in which she
describes how the story originated in Spain in the fourteenth century and was later adapted by Hans
Christian Andersen. She states that "it is still cited as an example of the foolish behavior of those in
authority." After telling of the child who points out that the emperor in fact does not have anything
on, McGovern declares "It is only the child who has not yet become corrupted by the world who
will tell what he or she sees." Another moral, McGovern says, lies in the fact that although the
emperor knows he is not wearing any clothes, his pride prevents him from admitting it.
As McGovern explains in her synopsis of The Little Mermaid, a mermaid falls in love with a prince
and makes a deal with a witch: She will trade her speech for legs, and if the prince marries her, she
will get a soul. If he marries someone else, "she will turn to foam on the sea." The prince does marry
someone else, but the mermaid's sisters save her by giving their hair to the witch.

Michealangelo, perhaps the most gifted sculptor and painter of all times, once said that "geniuses
stand on the shoulders of other geniuses." As Michelangelo built upon the brilliance of his
predecessors, Anne Sexton does the same in her collection of poems entitled Transformations. She
renovated fairy tales as told by the Brothers Grimm by adding her own life experiences and view of
contemporary culture, hammering away until she built an entirely new art form. Anne Sexton has
had a notable effect upon the literary genre of fairy tales through this shocking transformation of
classic tales.

marked the beginning of her rise to the top. 1967 another major year in Sexton's career; she won the
Pulitzer Prize for Live or Die. Transformations, her book of poetic fairy tales, was published later in
1971. On October 4, 1974, shortly after the release of Transformations, Anne could no longer stand

This biographical information is essential to understanding Anne Sexton's influence on the fairy tale
because her "transformations" of the Grimm Brother's work rises out of her personal turmoil. Most
of Sexton's works before and after Transformations are of the confessional style, but through her
poetic transformations of fairy tales, Sexton gives herself a more discrete outlet for her passions
(Ostriker 255). Her biographer Diane Middlebrook notes that "the poems were a way to place her
struggles 'in legend rather than personal history" (37). The intensely metaphorical characters of
Sexton's fairy poetry are one example of this. For instance, Judith the cold and neglectful mother in
"Snow White" surely represents Sexton's own callous mother (Middlebrook 37). Sexton's father is

Analysis Of ' Hansel And Gretel '
The Grimm brothers, in their short story, "Hansel and Gretel", illuminate the idea of vulnerability,
innocence, and determination through two children's eyes, and how in time, they become who they
need to be in order to overcome their obstacle. The two words, "vulnerability" and "innocence" are
known adjectives when one thinks of a child, thus fitting almost perfectly when describing Hansel
and Gretel. With these natural childlike traits instilled within the two, they have no choice but to
become dependent upon one another. These two brothers have constructed a great deal of imagery
throughout the story which represents the innocence of a child. The authors develop symbolism
throughout the story which in return, helps support my thesis. Unless one takes a closer look within
the text, they just might overlook what it actually represents. There is a great use of diction
throughout this short story which simply helps describe the two children, Hansel and Gretel. "The
white pebbles...glistening like silver coins" is a complete depiction of a young child (Grimm 15).
White as we all know represents purity, and the comparison of the pebbles to silver coins creates
represents a childlike view of excitement and innocence. This excitement and vivid imagination of
Hansel occurs just in time after overhearing the parents plan. There's a white(purity) cat that the boy
mentions when leaving home. Both objects are white, the pebbles and the cat. These two things also

The Effects Of Media Violence On Children
Cinderella is a famous fairy tale that almost everyone has heard of. There are numerous movies,
shows, and books that explains her story. Most versions of the story explain Cinderella being
mentally and physically abused by her step–mother and step–sisters. One of the most popular
versions of Cinderella is by the Grimm Brothers. Grimm's version is known for the graphic cruelty
and violence. According to American Psychological Association, the harmful influence of media
violence on children dates back to the 1950s and 1960s, and remains strong today. A child that
watches violence or hears about violence can be influenced to become violent. Indeed, in reviewing
the totality of empirical evidence regarding the impact of media violence, the conclusion that
exposure to violent portrayals poses a risk of harmful effects on children has been reached by the
U.S. Surgeon General, the National Institutes of Mental Health, the National Academy of Sciences,
the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Academy
of Pediatrics, and a host of other scientific and public health agencies and organizations. The short
story Cinderella by the Grimm Brothers was written in 1812 before Disney's Cinderella was made in
the year 1950. The Grimm Brothers' version is preferably for adults rather than children because of
its cruelty, and violence that represents the step–sisters desire to fit the glass slipper. Some effects
violence has on children are:

Synopsis Of ' The Godfather Death '
Tales Background: A tale is typically a short, fictional story usually set in Europe, and it features
fantasy characters such as dwarfs, witches, giants, fairies, talking animals and other magical
characters. More often than not, fairytales have a predictable plotline: The evil wreaks havoc on the
innocent, but somehow at the end of the story, there is a happy ending, since the good always
triumphs over the villain. Tales are usually linked to princesses, this is why expressions like
"Fairytale Romance" exist. However, not all tales have a happy endings Tales, instead of being
written down, used to be told or enacted dramatically, and this went on from generations to
generations, and because of this, the history of tales is not very clear. Godfather Death Summary

world is a vast field of study which many scholars have tried to exhaust with minimum success.
Scholars have spent a lifetime trying to understand the history of fairy tales only to realize they have
only dipped their toes in the vast sea. Fairy tales origin dates back to thousands of years ago. Fairy

It is characterized by animations like Rango and Puss in Boots. The main objective and influence the
fairy tales have on young kids is entertainment. But that is not merely what the stories are for, they
also carry hidden meanings and messages which when decoded they have major influence to the
children's lives. These insights are all about morals and behaviors signifying that good deeds are to
be rewarded while bad deeds are to be punished. Gender stereotyping is evident and displayed
greatly in most of the fairy tales with stereotyping varying across different classes and increasing as
the class goes higher. According to Sylvia D Hoffert, gender ideal is defined as characteristics
cluster, different behavioral patterns that the community expects men and women to meet in the
society(Grimm, 1963). They are the cultural expectations that should be met by both genders.
Generally in almost all fairy tales the heroine is beautiful and a morally upright girl. She has other
qualities that make her famous in the society to an extent that the prince, kings from other lands and
also of her land cannot resist. She is also naïve and sometimes foolish and cannot figure any way of
saving herself apart from waiting. This is also depicted in the fairy tale "Rapunzel" where the witch
hides her beautiful adopted daughter from the rest of the world. At other times (minimal) the villain
is female. In these tales she is

Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales History
Fairy tales, they are my favorite type of stories. I know they have a moral lesson, I also know the
tales contain some source of magic or mythical creatures. Fairy tales are known for their happy
endings as well. My experiences with these tales were mainly associated around the friendlier,
modern versions. As I began to notice that these modern tales were too happy for me, I came across
a book with work from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. I immediately fell in love with their style of
Fairy Tales, so I began to read those tales. I lost interest in the modern, happier tales. I honestly
think their twisted tales should replace all of the modern tales this generation has grown up on.

I decided to watch The Juniper Tree inspired by the Grimm brothers. I was very disappointed with
the movie, it was very slow, and sometimes it lost my interest. When I wrote about my reflection on
the movie, it wasn't fun, I thought this step would be entertaining, but it wasn't for me. The final step
was when I returned from winter break. I had to take notes from articles my teacher had selected for
his students. This step was time consuming, and I honestly had not enough time to finish. I had
missed one full day, and I arrived to class when it was halfway finished. I felt extremely rushed

The Girl Against The Brick Essay
Narrative The Girl Against the Brick The scent of cigarette smoke and alcohol was overpowering. A
group of rowdy university students crowded around the entrance of the pub, and slugged down beer
and liquor. I worked at the café across from the pub and had seen this group there often. One student
stood out from the rest. Standing tall, with watery blue eyes and dark blonde hair, a beautiful girl
stood to the side against the crimson brick exterior of the pub in silence. "Elizabeth come take
another shot with us!" a boy among the group shouted at her. With an indifferent look and a false
smile, she took the glass and took another shot of liquor. She then leaned against the brick wall of
the pub and looked to the cold night sky. She pulled out her phone and I could see in the
illumination of the phone screen that her expression had changed to sadness and pain. She followed
the same crowd each weekend, leaned on the cracked brick wall, with the same pained expressions
as before. I wondered how someone could be so alone and upset when they were so loved by
everyone around them. Weeks pass, the students never came to the pub. Then, after three months, I
saw the familiar faces. There was a weakness among them, some even sitting in silence. I looked to
the brick wall where Elizabeth always stood, but the wall was empty. In fact, from that weekend on,
I never saw Elizabeth again. Recipe A dark twist on a classic take on ignored abuse. Serving Size:

The Heart Reserves A Special Place For Music
The heart reserves a special place for music. To many, music is more than a melody or a
combination of sounds pulsating in ears; it brings out emotions, memories, and shared vibes.
Whether a person is an avid listener or casually listens to music, everyone has a few specific albums
that laid a foundation for the music they currently enjoy. Recently, I have rediscovered one of these
albums, Madvillainy, when putting my old playlist on shuffle. The album consists of Daniel Dumile,
the album's MC (rapper) who goes by many aliases, but most commonly as MF Doom, and Otis
Jackson Jr., or Madlib. The underground hip–hop album was released in 2004 and is now considered
a classic by many. The album's 22 tracks consist of skits, instrumentals, and rapping with most
tracks around two minutes long. Madvillainy has proven to me to be a masterpiece and a
consistently good listen.
One of the qualities that set Madvillainy apart from its peers, is the superb production performance
given by Madlib. The album's production is magnificent, even to Pitchfork standards, saying, "the
samples are smart and never played–out, and the production and rhymes reveal a determined sense
of cooperation, as Doom spouts off his most brilliant lyrical change–ups and production–conscious
playoffs" (Pemberton). Like stated in Pitchfork, the production works cohesively with MF Doom's

The Tale Of The Fairy Tales
As we grow up, we hear fairy tales and we read them into our lives. Every word and every image is
imprinted into our minds. The fairy tales we read are never abandoned. They grow with us and our
dreams become molds of the many morals and happily ever afters fairy tales display. We tell
children fairy tales when they go to sleep and they read them in school and we even have them
watch Disney adaptions that reinforce them further. Generally, they were everywhere while we grew
up and they continue to be present while children are growing up now. But what influence do these
stories have? We casually expose our children to these tales, but in some cases they can have
particularly, harmful personal effects on them, although there is nothing completely or visibly "bad"
about them or about the characters in them. Before we divulge our youth to these stories, we should
assess their substance and see what sort of effect they may be having on them. They have received
so much scrutiny and have been studied by many. Recognizing fairy tales effects on the minds of
children is vital in their development. This paper will focus on the underlying messages that the
average person wouldn't recognize in these everyday stories. There's a modern distort with fairy

Looking at the cover, the tower seems to be tall, but friendlier looking than in Zelinsky's version.
Although the story of Rapunzel itself is nearly the same, the illustrations are what easily separate the
time periods.
There are also many similarities with shapes and colors that are associated with the Molly Bang
theory found in both stories of Rapunzel. The tall and sharp edged corners and the darkness in the
tower in Zelinsky's version reflect the feeling of fear, curiosity, and anxiousness. By making
Rapunzel's long hair blonde, the author wants the audience to escape the feeling of fear and know
that she is a protagonist in the story. The shapes are also a crucial factor in the Zelinsky's
illustrations. Because the trend throughout Rapunzel is gothic, there are lots of pointy arches all
through the story. These sharp, dark points reflect the same feeling of fear and scariness as the dark
colors do. The prince in the story is painted happily, he is smiling in most of the pictures and he
doesn't seem to have a point on him. He and Rapunzel are both very soft and round characters
telling us that they are both protagonists.

Little Snow White, Cinderella, And Rapunzel
There are many classic fairy tales that have been passed down from generation to generation for
many years. Today, most young children know the familiar tales of "Little Snow White",
"Cinderella", and "Rapunzel." Although Walt Disney's versions differ from the Grimm Brothers
versions, the themes of these stories all remain the same. In "Little Snow White", "Cinderella" and
"Rapunzel" there is a theme of naivety among the three princesses. Snow–White, Cinderella and
Rapunzel all have sweet and innocent personalities that cause them problems for them in their
stories. In the short stories, "Little Snow White", "Cinderella", and "Rapunzel" by Jacob and
Wilhelm Grimm, all three main characters suffer from their passive attitudes and their naivety and
lack of intelligence which causes them conflict in all of their stories. Snow–White is the daughter of
a king and queen, and when her mother was pregnant with her, she pricks her finger and sees three
drops of blood. While she is looking at the drops she says, "would that my little daughter may be as
white as that snow, as red as the blood, and as black as the ebony window–frame" (Grimm's "Little
Snow White"). In the first paragraph of the story the reader can already assume that Snow–White
will only be known for her looks. Her mother only wishes for her daughter to be beautiful. She does
not ask for her to be smart, she only wishes for her to be a pretty face. This instance hinders Snow–

Comparing Hansel And Gretel, By The Grimm Brothers
Children are led to believe that Hansel and Gretel, in the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel" by the
Grimm brothers, are the protagonists or "the good guys" of the story. Bettelheim believes that in
fairy tales all characters are either good or bad and that they are not ambiguous. To be ambiguous is
to have a double meaning or to be unclear about decisions that are made. After examining Hansel
and Gretel's actions more thoroughly it is discovered that there is ambiguity in the choices they
make, therefore rejecting Bettelheim's previous claim on how fairy tale characters are never
ambiguous. Initially, I agreed with Bettelheim's statement on non ambiguous fairy tale characters
because in the beginning they were merely victims of the antagonist's decisions, but then I started
noticing Hansel and Gretel's counteractions and how it did not comply under the category of "good"
or benign. Although Hansel and Gretel may appear to be "good" in the eyes of the children, Hansel
and Gretel's ambiguous actions have led me to believe otherwise. One of the sinful actions that
Hansel and Gretel commit is lying and even though they were lying to one of the witches, I still
view them as ambiguous characters. As Hansel and Gretel try to find their way back home from the
woods. after their wicked stepmother and confused father leave them out in the woods to starve,
they find a gingerbread house and start to eat away at it, however the wicked witch comes along and

The Tale Of The Grimm 's Cinderella
Have you ever had a dark and gloomy day? Imagine having that feeling every single day. The
Grimm's Cinderella was written in 1812. 1812 was one of the harshest years for America. An event
that formed it was the war against Great Britain and the United States. Not only was there a war, but
there was also a series of disastrous harvests. Taxes got higher, and more than twenty people who
were involved with a Luddite Act were hung. In 1812, there was also the only assassination of a
prime minister, who was shot dead in the House of Commons. The Grimm Brothers have put the
dark times of 1812 into their stories. Some of their stories contain violence, child abuse, and wicked
mothers. They came up with these types of stories after their father died, and when they struggled
out of school. That gave them enough time to research and put together a collection of folk tales.
Now you can see why the Grimm's Cinderella was dark and gloomy. Although the plot stayed the
same, over the years, the story did get lighter. Disney's Cinderella came out in 1950. In 1950,
learning information was not by fear, but by engaging happiness. Disney's Cinderella transforms the
Grimm's Cinderella into a happier atmosphere. While some similarities between Disney's Cinderella
and Grimm's Cinderella are noticeable, the differences are pronounced, especially when referring to
the slippers, her father, and the ball. Disney's Cinderella and Grimm's Cinderella are alike in many
ways. One of the things that the

Analysis Of The Poem ' Fairy Tales '
Fairy tales are full of tropes and stereotypes that exist from story to story, one of the main ones
being the "happily ever after" ending. Most fairy tales, especially the traditional Perrault or Grimm
versions, fall prey to this trope where the main goal is for the princess to find her prince, get
married, and live happily ever after. Many critics, particularly feminist critics, find this trope to be
problematic because of the extreme emphasis placed on marriage as women's main, if not only,
objective in life. Karen Rowe, for example, states in her essay "Feminism and Fairy Tales", that
"fairy tales perpetuate the patriarchal status quo by making female subordination seem a
romantically desirable, indeed an inescapable fate" (342). In other words, Rowe relates the
"romanticizations of marriage" portrayed in fairy tales with promotions of "passivity, dependency,
and self–sacrifice" expected of women in their everyday lives (342). However, it can be dangerous
to assume that every fairy tale conforms to the singular promotion of marriage as women's only
option. While early fairy tales such as "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty" tend to glorify the
romantic ideal of marriage, and in turn female subordination, contemporary tales and adaptations
such as Brave and Frozen, are working to give women a more powerful position. In order to better
illustrate the transformation of women from within tales like "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty" to
the more recent portrayals, one must

Sleeping Beauty By Charles Perrault

  • 1. Sleeping Beauty By Charles Perrault Throughout history the soulful tale of "Sleeping Beauty" has been told many times, and each time the characters and storyline changes, we learn more about the characters themselves, and why they do what they do. Sleeping beauty although, a childhood favorite is actually a shockingly violent narrative compared to the one we all know and love. It has changed in order to fit social norms for the time and the context has been altered to appeal to the current audiences of that time. In the first edition of Sleeping Beauty written in 1697 by Charles Perrault "The sleeping Beauty in the wood", is a tale of rape, adultery and cannibalism. Beauty is seen to be an innocent naïve young girl, not much of a change from modern times, however prince charming, is not quite charming but rather violent, not only a kiss occurs, but rape. Charming's character is known to be intoxicatingly sweet, sincere and full of nothing but charm, here he's nothing but a monster, he simply rapes beauty while deep in slumber, conceives two children and it ends with everyone eating each other. "...He left her kissing her children and weeping over them, and went into kill a young doe that the queen mother ate for supper with as much relish as if it had been her daughter–in–law. She was very pleased with her own cruelty" (pg.76,"sleeping Beauty of the wood"). Modern times has definitely made it a more "child friendly" tale cutting out the adultery and adding fairies and glitter instead making the prince appear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Tale Of Fairy Tales Fairy Tales were use as children's bedtime stories and at often times it teaches a lesson. Many of these tales were originally passed down orally and it was popular among the peasants. Only recently, a couple hundred years ago, has these tales been written down because back in the days many people were illiterate. Even though the adults maybe reading the stories to the child, the child often alters it. That's why there's so many different version of the same stories. In most Fairy Tales the villains were either dismissed or die in some horrible death while the "good guys" be victorious. This theme occurs in Fairy Tales like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Red Ridding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel. These ending in a way teaches the children a lesson. In the Cinderella stories, the stepsisters unlike the Disney version, were strike with ill fates. In the Brother Grimm's version, Cinderella's real mother said, "Dear child, if you are good and say you prayers, our dear Lord will always be with you, and shall look down on you from heaven and always be with you (117)." When Cinderella followed her mother's words the animals around her help her out during her times of need, which allow her to meet her prince eventually. But her stepsisters along with the stepmother did not follow those rules, instead they fill themselves with jealousy and evil deeds, which lead to their down fall. Around the time when this version of Cinderella was created it was a highly religious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Sweet Hereafter and "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" Essay "The Sweet Hereafter and the Pied Piper" A tragic event can occur in no longer than a moment and produce a domino effect that can change everything in your life. The book "The Sweet Hereafter" by Russell Banks contains such an event. This book has a modernized undertone of the folk tale "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert Browning. This tale is carried throughout the books entirety. Both of these stories show connections in many ways and almost parallel one another in their basic plot of showing the painful effects disaster can have on a small town. While the people of Hamlin had the Piper to directly blame for their miseries, the people of Sam Dent did not. Both stories are based on the loss of the children in a small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the end of the book "The Sweet Hereafter" one of the only children left to survive the accident is a young girl named Nicole Burnell. Though she escapes narrowly with her life she is crippled and confined to a wheelchair thereafter. Her dreams of becoming a beauty queen or a rock star are dashed. Similarly in the tale of "The Pied Piper" the town is left with only one child who is crippled and thus was unable to keep up with the rest of the children as they followed the Piper into the cave dancing in an enchanted trance. In both stories we later learn that these characters whom are left behind almost wish they had not been spared. The crippled boy from "The Pied Piper" is in fact said to be sad at not being able to share "all the pleasant sights" that he believes his playmates are seeing in a heaven–like land described to them by the Piper himself. In the time immediately following the accident Nicole Burnell could be described as having these similar feelings. In reality both of these characters disabilities ended up saving them. In the case of the crippled boy his lameness kept him from being taken away forever by the Piper, like all the other children. In the case of Nicole Burnell her gained disability gave her control and power over the incestuous situation she was in with her own father, it saved her from further sexual abuse. • 7. Conventional Gender Roles Are Embedded Into Our Stories... Conventional gender roles are embedded into our stories creating the idea of "princess culture". This "princess culture" creates the idea that girls have to become both Cinderella and Supergirl. This concept also brings "happily ever after" into the mix, creating the masculine prince who saves the princess or is arm candy at the end of the fairytale. While this format is much beloved by many including myself, there are many lesser known fairy tales which make important breaks in these gender norms. By looking under the surface one sees that The Twelve Dancing Princesses by Marianna Mayer breaks the "princess culture" gender roles, having strong women defying the rules as well as the "prince" undermining the classic notion of a hero in the princess narrative. The 12 Dancing Princesses by Marianna Mayer takes place in a mysterious world where upon waking the King finds his 12 daughters' shoes completely worn through. A young gardener is able to solve the mystery by tricking the princesses into thinking that he is asleep while secretly following them in his invisibility cloak. The gardener discovers that the young princesses secretly go off to a beautiful ball every night and dance the night away. He steals three golden branches and a golden cup as proof of the beautiful night that he witnessed. The youngest daughter finds out Peter has discovered their secret when he puts one of the branches in her bouquet. When Peter finally explains to the King what has happened, he ... • 9. Fairytales : ' Once Upon A Time ' How Fairytales Shape Our... For millions of years, we always wondered why society continues to tell stories that was created many years ago. Some people feel that by telling these stories it allows them to revert back on their childhood lives. Writers began to prove that continuing these stories not only reverts a person back to their childhood, but it carries out different values meant to gain through them. I personally agree that fairytales are told to gain life lessons. Although various people have come up with theories, but no one really knows why we continue these stories. Jonathan Young wrote an essay for Inside Journal magazine called "Once Upon a Time, How Fairytales Shape Our Lives." In his essay he began to explain why he believed that we continue to tell these stories or fairytales. One of the reasons he says is that fairytales take us back to a place of innocence as a kid. I think that when we do tell fairytales that it does allow us to go back to the time where a little bit of nothing meant a whole lot of something to us. As a kid I would often experience this type of effect when I was told a fairytale. The meaning behind saying that a little bit of nothing meant a whole lot of something to us simply says that we valued the content rather than the meaning of the tale. As we grew older we generally like to be reverted back to this time when genuine happiness came from just about anything that could be imagined. The imagination throughout an individual differs from one person to the next ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Charles Perrault’s Fairytales The Introduction: Fairytales are stories that have some magical aspects. They usually tell a story about a castle and times when kings ruled the land. I always loved the princesses in these stories. When I was young, I would dress up as them. My friends and I would act out the stories. They usually teach a lesson. I always wanted the princess to escape of find a happy ending. Most fairytales end with "Happily ever after." Stories give us a distraction and a fantasy from real life. Stories give us a somewhat perfect picture of life. We try to make our lives reflect the story in some way. Most people even paint others as evil or mean, like the villains in the story. She is faced with troubles trying to prohibit her from her happy ending, of marrying the prince. Another fairy tale that is very well–liked is "Little Red Riding Hood." In this story, Little Red Riding Hood is on a quest to go to her grandmother's house. An evil wolf tricks her and ends up eating her in the end. The readers of fairy tales have been using these stories as examples for their lives, since the 18th century. Since fairy tales set and example for real life situations, it is important to see the naivety of the main character is a main reason why the evil enemies are able to take advantage of them so effortlessly. In the fairy tale, "Sleeping Beauty in the Wood", the princess' curiosity captivates her and she pricks her finger, on the spindle. The evil old fairy barely had to use her magic powers on the girl. In "Little Red Riding Hood", her curiosity of the grandma's different looks and gullibility gets her close enough to the wolf for her to be eaten, in the end. Also, in the fairy tale "Blue Beard", the young wife wants to open the locked closet door. Her curiosity guides her to do so, which leads her husband to put her in a dangerous situation and almost death. Therefore, it is important to realize and understand the naivety of characters in the stories and their confrontations with evil characters. The friend was beheaded. The Countess de Murat was banished from Louis XIV's court in Paris for publishing a political satire about him; she then shocked the people of Loches, where she had her chateau, by holding gatherings where she and her friends would dance, talk, and tell fairy tales, as in the salons of Paris. Her tales concern marriage, the power struggles of the aristocracy, and true love. They do not always have a happy ending, either. Marie–Jeanne L' Heritier led a less controversial life. She did not marry, choosing to dedicate herself to writing. Her father was a historian and writer, her sister was a poet. She was also the niece of Charles Perrault, and quite likely influenced his interested in fairy tales. Fairytales have not been always written because before people could write, fairytales would be spoken and passed on from generation to generation. Although large numbers of literary fairy tales were written in 17th century France, most of the tales which are still told and retold now are far older in origin. The first published fairytales happened in 1667; a cycle of fifty tales was published by Giambattista Basile (Hasse 32). Of course these publications were not the exact fairytales that were created because many of them were butchered when being passed down. Although many people associate ... The character affects all every man or woman underneath them, and through fairytales, we can see how they were portrayed in historic times. Historically, women were looked down upon in society as the second–grade gender because they were not considered to be strong enough for outside work such as hunting, field work and so forth. Instead, women were largely looked upon as the breeders, cookers, and the babysitters of children. Society's appreciation of women was little compared that to of men since the men were bringing the money and the food they ate, they were thought to be superior. Surprisingly, most fairy tales have women as one of the main characters who happen to learn lessons, become better people, and then have better lives overall. At least, that is what most people think that is what fairy tales are telling them because of how they are portrayed to seem like that the woman are becoming better people. In 1697, French writer Charles Perrault updated an age–old fairy tale about a young woman named Cinderella to appeal to his contemporaries, French nobility and bourgeoisie. So many of the early versions of the tale boasted a very resourceful young woman who played an active role in her destiny. Perrault, however wrote his Cinderella as a well–mannered, docile, selfless women who would fit seamlessly with the ideal 17th century upper–class society. Historically, fairy tales have reflected the values of society in which they were written or revised mirroring its preoccupations, obsessions, ambitions, and shortcomings. What do ... We would see them discover how different their tastes and priorities were when they go shopping to furnish the palace. We would see them run up bills and debts by trying to do much too fast, and they'd fight about whose fault their extravagances had been. Common sense and love would prevail. They'd get on a budget and the storm would pass. A couple of years into the marriage, the Handsome Prince would get involved with a merger and acquisitions of the neighboring county, and he'd be gone a lot on business trips. The stress and loneliness of long separations would lead to disagreements, but again love would prevail. Then a child would be born to Cinderella and the Prince meaning more stress. The child would be diagnosed with a learning disability and Cinderella and the Prince would each wonder whether the cause might have been the other's having parties too hard in their younger days. Their feelings of guilt and blame would generate into quarrels. A second child would be born. More changes and more stress. Cinderella's mother in–law would sometimes interfere and criticize their parenting. Bickering would continue and get worse. Then Cinderella and the Handsome Prince would go to a marriage counselor. • 21. Charles Perrault’s Cinderella In "Cinderella" by Charles Perrault, the story depicts an imaginative fairytale through the hardships of a mistreated daughter and the magic of a fairy; in essence, Cinderella demonstrates that focusing on materialism is more important and more effective other than working up the path to majesty. Cinderella is a character who is often mistreated by her stepmother and god sisters. Bearing unsuitable personalities, they treat her harshly, leaving all of the chores to her. However, she admits that her tattered clothes are not worthy of a formal event, and continues to be belittled by her stepsisters. Portrayed with low self–esteem and insecurity, she does not respond harshly to their cruel insults. As a result, the main character relies on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, her true beauty lies within her skin, as Perrault's interprets Cinderella as "a hundred times more handsome than her sisters". He aims to focus more on female recognition and self–fulfillment, rather than provide a base for all readers to understand fully (Hühn). At an elementary level, this may not influence children to an extent, but other stories that reproduce this same structure of plot elements could possibly influence children in the future. For instance, she was not the hero of the story. The Prince isn't the hero until he discovers her lost possession, a glass slipper, and searched for the person that fits. As told by Perrault, "he had done nothing but look at her all the time, and that most certainly he was very much in love with the beautiful owner of the glass slipper." This enforces the fact that her beauty prevails over her actual personality but not behavior, and the appearance and mannerisms surely impressed the Prince. The Prince stereotypes the role of women being in need of a destined lover. He is the one that identifies Cinderella as the one in the dress, though excluding behavior, her appearance dazzles him for two nights at the ball. Most importantly, he's not the hero of the fairytale, but readers can interpret the fairy godmother as the savior of Cinderella's demise. The role of magic comes in part with the acceptance of achieving the imagery of an elegant woman, impressing the Prince who gains interest in her. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Analysis Of The Book ' Little Red Cap ' By Angela Carter Fairytales subvert, challenge or reaffirm archetypal values through didactic lenses. The presence of universal themes allows for an examination of contextual shifts and by being malleable in nature, can be made relevant to different audiences. The Brothers Grimm 's "Little Red Cap", Angela Carter's 'The Company of Wolves" and Tommy Wirkola 's film, "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" all promote their hegemonic ideologies and as 'cultural artefacts' extrapolate the contextual values of their time period. Carl Jung 's theory of the 'Collective Unconscious" ensures that each of these fairytale adaptations can retain their archetypal value and thus remain significant and relevant in contemporary circumstances. The Brother Grimm's 19th Century Fairytale, "Little Red Cap" reflects the hegemonies of its context through its cautionary justification. Grimm's work reflected the importance of German national cohesion under French occupation and the view towards foreigners as destructive usurpers. "Little Red Cap" was adapted for instructional purposes, specifically aimed at a children 's audience. Initially in the tale, the subversion of Perrault's depiction of the girl is evident exemplifying her as a "sweet" little girl and the hyperbolic "everybody loved her instantly on first sight" demonstrates the engrained virtue of her youth. The instruction for Little Red Cap to "not stray from the path" foreshadows the inherent danger associated with a misguided venture. The symbolism of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Comparison of Two Versions of Cinderella: Grimm vs. Perrault A lot of the fairy tale stories that we have seen as young adults and even as adults are original folk tale stories that have been modified and rewritten to accommodate our new cultures. Cinderella happens to be one of these stories that have been changed over the years. There are many different versions of Cinderella, an African Cinderella, a Hungarian Cinderella and even a Chinese version. All of the Cinderella's are similar in plot, but the author dictates the story's theme based on the people whom he is writing for which completely changes the story's tone, mood and other elements. While Perrault's version stresses the values and materialistic worries of his middle–class audience, Grimm's' focus is on the harsh realities of life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cinderella goes to her mother's grave and cries about how poorly and inhumanely she is getting treated, she tries satisfying her wicked step–mother, but she is never successful. The Grimm brothers had a different audience to satisfy so their story tone is darker and deeper. Their main concern was for the audience to sympathize with Cinderella and emotionally connect with her. The Little Glass Slipper, Perrault's version of Cinderella also has a different ending. The ending is happier and includes forgiveness. Although the step sisters were cruel and treated Cinderella horribly she forgave them in the end and even found good husbands for them, and they all lived happily ever after. You see from this that this story is intended to teach a moral lesson of forgiveness and kindness. In Perrault's version you can be terrible and unpleasant but you will be forgiven because that's part of life. The Grimm brothers however have a different point of view on that matter. They feel that what you do will come back to haunt you and you can't be a sinful person and be forgiven. Cinderella was always kind and compassionate and she got rewarded for that, she married the prince and escaped her horrible life. She no longer weeps at her mother's grave and cries herself to sleep. Original Recordings Of British American Marchen Essay One of the earliest recordings of British American Märchen in the Archive of Folk Culture includes Sam Harmon's rendition of "Stiff Dick", a Jack tale parallel to the "Brave Little Tailor" included in the Grimm Brother's Household Tales. These stories begin with Jack traveling the country usually looking for work. He encounters a group of insects, sometimes butterflies, most often house flies, and kills multiple with a stick or wooden paddle in one swing. The most common number killed is seven, whereby Jack proceeds to have a belt or belt buckle made to announce his accomplishment. In the Jack, "Stiff Dick" versions, the lettering reads, "Stiff Dick, killed seven with one lick!" In less suggestive versions, the message reads, "Strong man Jack, killed seven at a whack!" After the belt or belt buckle is made, Jack encounters the authority figure of the region who misunderstands the meaning of the message. The king, wealthy land owner, or lord of the region offers Jack a task based on his perception that Jack is a fierce fighter. The first task is to remove a wild boar that has been terrorizing the area, killing livestock and injuring people. Jack is offered a significant amount of money for the removal of the threat because all other men of the expanse are frightened. Jack is fearful of the boar himself, and decides to pretend to accept the offer but planning to slip out of the territory instead. "Godfather Death" by the Grimm brothers is a story that tries to make sense out of why people have to pass away. Death is unavoidable to every being. The godson in this story wanted to cheat death, he was not ready to give up his life. He tried to get death himself to give him more life but as the man found out that is not possible. The story explains in a strange way that when your life candle is to burn out and you are to pass away there is no way to avoid it. Death takes his godson to the underworld to show him why he must take life when the time has come. The godson begs him not to take his life and explains he only cheated Death because he wanted to marry the beautiful princess and become the King. "That I cannot do," Death replies. "One candle must first go out before a new one is lighted." (Grimm) ( 15). He explains that his short candle may be put on top of a long candle so his life does not expire. Death tricks the man and says he will do this, but he stumbles and the candle goes out leaving the man lifeless. It is clear to Connie in these lines what Arnold's purpose in her life is. There are many depictions of Little Red Riding Hood and each has their own version of who she was and how the story ended. • 33. A Brief Look at the Brothers Grimm How many little girls dream of being Snow White? How much money did Disney's Tangled make? What little girl hasn't dressed up as Cinderella or dreamed of meeting her very own prince charming? These popular fairy tales were created by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Their primary motivation when starting their collection of fairy tales was to preserve culture rather than entertain, but entertain is what they did. These fairy tales, and versions of them, have remained popular for a very long time, outlasting most other works of literature. The Brothers Grimm adapted these well– known stories from around Europe to reflect their own personal views, Germanize them and remove some of the more disturbing details of the original stories. In the same way, these fairy tales have been altered again and again to be acceptable to society. Fairy tales similar in theme can be found across the world. The Brothers Grimm versions are the most familiar because their emphasis on German culture and Christian morals is very similar to American culture and values. The adaptability and skillful incorporation of morals and issues considered socially unacceptable in an entertaining story, has allowed the Brother's fairy tales to last throughout the ages. One of the most popular of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales is Snow White. In the original version, the theme was that of a mother–daughter rivalry, but the Grimm brothers changed many elements so that it would more closely reflect their values. In the ... Female Antagonists Within Fairy Tales Whether Female antagonists within fairy tales are portrayed in a positive or negative light their roles within the stories are very important if not crucial to the development of the protagonists. Karen Rowe in "Feminist and fairy tales" explains the divide between different female antagonists. Female antagonist come in all forms, Faeries, ogresses, evil queens, and evil witches step mothers and or step sisters. For the most part these characters are often divided between good and evil, or light and dark, but what is often realized, is that there isn't much of a combination between the two groups in which an antagonist falls in between both categories. In this essay I will lay out the thematic roles of these different types of female antagonist's portrayed within fairy tales. Negative female antagonist play a very particular role within fairy tales. The female antagonists are often very dominant, they are not married and unable to bare children due to the fact that they are usually old. However there are times in which the antagonist is a beautiful women who's jealously often overbears her physical appearance. In "Snow White" Snow's Step mother is constantly looking for assurance about her physical appearance, so she confides in her magic mirror, "Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who in this land is fairest of all?" • 37. Women Of The Times Of Fairy Tales And Fantasy Writing During the times of fairy tales and fantasy writing, there was a considerable amount of inequality between genders. As such during this time period, stories that were written most likely would have been written in a form that showed influence from the society of the author(s). I will be using the stories of: "Rapunzel", "Rumpelstiltskin", "Cinderella", "Frog Prince", "Snow White", and "Hansel and Grethel" to represent the inequalities between the genders. These stories all have the common theme of men doing an action and women getting punished for it most of the time. In the story of "Rapunzel," the main character that the story is centered upon is a female. This female, "Rapunzel," was depicted as a very incompetent and inferior ... "Now set yourself to work, and if you have not spun this straw into gold by an early hour to–morrow you must die" (Rumpelstiltskin, Grimm 192). This man does not get punished, much like the other man, but yet the female who did nothing wrong to start with was about to be punished by having her newborn taken away from her in the story (Rumpelstiltskin, Grimm 193). These portrayals of women as being useless and helpless are solid examples of how people are treated differently depending on gender in fairy tales. According to the stories; "Cinderella", "Snow White", "Hansel and Grethel"; the women whom are step–mother's of the protagonists in these stories have some sort of power of the fathers of these protagonists, and usually causing some form of conflict for the protagonist. Regardless of these women being the main source of conflict for the protagonist, the men still play a role. • 41. Analysis Of Disney 's ' Fairy Tales ' Did you know that your favorite fairytales were once violent? Originally, Grimm's Fairy Tales were intended for children to read. However, because they contained remarkably dark elements, parents soon believed these stories were too violent for their children. Eventually, only adults read the tales. In the 1950s, Walt Disney created a non–violent version of the classic Grimm fairytale, Cinderella. Walt Disney's cinematic version is more accessible to a wider audience than the Grimm tale because Disney removed most of the violence and simplified the tale while maintaining the original story. In order to reach a wider audience, Disney's first strategy was to remove the violence from the story for the film. Disney movies are made precisely for young children, so they produce movies to be cheerful, appropriate, and non–violent. In the Brothers Grimm tale, the two stepsisters will stop at nothing to make the slipper fit. When they could not get their toe or heel into the shoe, their mother gave them a knife and said, "Cut the toe off, for when you are queen you will never have to go on foot." Analysis Of ' Cinderella ' By Jakob And Wilhelm Grimm ' Analysis of "Cinderella" Majority of fairy tales, including "Cinderella" by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, have a complex moral along with life lessons behind the story line. Due to this, famous scholars such as Maria Tatar, study these fairy tales. In Tatar's essay, she states that "Even fairy tales, with their naïve sense of justice, their tenacious materialism, their reworking of familiar territory, and their sometimes narrow imaginative range, rarely send unambiguous messages" (232). She is stating this to put forward that all fairy tales, including Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm's version of "Cinderella" "rarely send unambiguous messages" (232). In Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm's version of "Cinderella", they start by talking about a sick mother who soon dies. Before she dies, she tells her daughter, Cinderella, that god will protect her if she is good and pious. The mother then dies, and the father remarries to a beautiful woman with two daughters that are regularly cruel to Cinderella. One day Cinderella's father goes into town and asks the girls if they pursue anything special from town, the two step sisters say they want dresses and jewelry and Cinderella says she wants him to break off the first branch that he runs into on his way home and the father does so. (Lynda Meyers) Disney did a rather good representation on the Grimm brother's original fairytale. In both stories Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs conveys a message about the mirror representing a sense of self on a superficial and deep emotional level. It reinstates many cultural roles that have been put upon both woman and men. It is a story of self discovery and whether or not the characters are able to develop throughout the story in relation to the affects to a "real life individual". The queen relies on this masculine 'authority' to tell her if she is beautiful or not. It is not providing ample mirroring, but instead, mainly reflecting back to girls what the cultural ideal is. The stories reinstate this idea females already have. Though, another aspect is that one often looks into one's unconscious when looking into the mirror. Both the original story and the Disney movie tell us how to develop and integrate conflicting aspects of ourselves as our personal unconscious map unfolds. Essay Classic Fairy Tales: Annotated Bibliography In his evaluation of Little Red Riding Hood, Bill Delaney states, "In analyzing a story . . . it is often the most incongruous element that can be the most revealing." To Delaney, the most revealing element in Little Red Riding Hood is the protagonist's scarlet cloak. Delaney wonders how a peasant girl could own such a luxurious item. First, he speculates that a "Lady Bountiful" gave her the cloak, which had belonged to her daughter. Later, however, Delaney suggests that the cloak is merely symbolic, perhaps representing a fantasy world in which she lives. After telling of the child who points out that the emperor in fact does not have anything on, McGovern declares "It is only the child who has not yet become corrupted by the world who will tell what he or she sees." Another moral, McGovern says, lies in the fact that although the emperor knows he is not wearing any clothes, his pride prevents him from admitting it. The two words, "vulnerability" and "innocence" are known adjectives when one thinks of a child, thus fitting almost perfectly when describing Hansel and Gretel. With these natural childlike traits instilled within the two, they have no choice but to become dependent upon one another. These two brothers have constructed a great deal of imagery throughout the story which represents the innocence of a child. The authors develop symbolism throughout the story which in return, helps support my thesis. Unless one takes a closer look within the text, they just might overlook what it actually represents. There is a great use of diction throughout this short story which simply helps describe the two children, Hansel and Gretel. Indeed, in reviewing the totality of empirical evidence regarding the impact of media violence, the conclusion that exposure to violent portrayals poses a risk of harmful effects on children has been reached by the U.S. Surgeon General, the National Institutes of Mental Health, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a host of other scientific and public health agencies and organizations. The short story Cinderella by the Grimm Brothers was written in 1812 before Disney's Cinderella was made in the year 1950. The Grimm Brothers' version is preferably for adults rather than children because of its cruelty, and violence that represents the step–sisters desire to fit the glass slipper. Some effects violence has on children are: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Synopsis Of ' The Godfather Death ' Tales Background: A tale is typically a short, fictional story usually set in Europe, and it features fantasy characters such as dwarfs, witches, giants, fairies, talking animals and other magical characters. Tales are usually linked to princesses, this is why expressions like "Fairytale Romance" exist. However, not all tales have a happy endings Tales, instead of being written down, used to be told or enacted dramatically, and this went on from generations to generations, and because of this, the history of tales is not very clear. EVOLUTION OF FAIRY TALES AND THEIR CHANGING INFLUENCES ON CHILDREN Name Institution Introduction 'Seas of story' is how Marina Warner refers to the world of fairy tales. The fairy tales world is a vast field of study which many scholars have tried to exhaust with minimum success. Scholars have spent a lifetime trying to understand the history of fairy tales only to realize they have only dipped their toes in the vast sea. Fairy tales origin dates back to thousands of years ago. Fairy tales have fantasy creatures like fey, goblins, talking animals, trolls, elves, faeries, witches and giants. As the word fairy means in Latin, enchantments and events that are usually farfetched comprise the story. They are not always realistic and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is characterized by animations like Rango and Puss in Boots. The main objective and influence the fairy tales have on young kids is entertainment. But that is not merely what the stories are for, they also carry hidden meanings and messages which when decoded they have major influence to the children's lives. These insights are all about morals and behaviors signifying that good deeds are to be rewarded while bad deeds are to be punished. Gender stereotyping is evident and displayed greatly in most of the fairy tales with stereotyping varying across different classes and increasing as the class goes higher. According to Sylvia D Hoffert, gender ideal is defined as characteristics cluster, different behavioral patterns that the community expects men and women to meet in the society(Grimm, 1963). They are the cultural expectations that should be met by both genders. Generally in almost all fairy tales the heroine is beautiful and a morally upright girl. She has other qualities that make her famous in the society to an extent that the prince, kings from other lands and also of her land cannot resist. She is also naïve and sometimes foolish and cannot figure any way of saving herself apart from waiting. This is also depicted in the fairy tale "Rapunzel" where the witch hides her beautiful adopted daughter from the rest of the world. At other times (minimal) the villain is female. • 61. Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales History Fairy tales, they are my favorite type of stories. I know they have a moral lesson, I also know the tales contain some source of magic or mythical creatures. Fairy tales are known for their happy endings as well. My experiences with these tales were mainly associated around the friendlier, modern versions. As I began to notice that these modern tales were too happy for me, I came across a book with work from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. I immediately fell in love with their style of Fairy Tales, so I began to read those tales. I lost interest in the modern, happier tales. I honestly think their twisted tales should replace all of the modern tales this generation has grown up on. Writing this paper will allow my knowledge to expand on early ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I decided to watch The Juniper Tree inspired by the Grimm brothers. I was very disappointed with the movie, it was very slow, and sometimes it lost my interest. When I wrote about my reflection on the movie, it wasn't fun, I thought this step would be entertaining, but it wasn't for me. The final step was when I returned from winter break. I had to take notes from articles my teacher had selected for his students. This step was time consuming, and I honestly had not enough time to finish. I had missed one full day, and I arrived to class when it was halfway finished. I felt extremely rushed through the process, but when I looked back at my notes I took, I realized how helpful they were. Some of the information was extremely intelligent, and had allowed me to have a new observation on fairy tales. The Find: Fairy tales are known for their unique happy ending along with magic sources. Brothers Grimm's fairy tales are uniquely twisted and malice, yet they are able to include a strong moral lesson. A fairy tales is a story where improbable situations lead to a happy ending ("Fairy Tale," par. 2). Fairy tales took shape in the sixteenth–century Italy as literature for adults (Bottigheimer par. 11). Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm studied ancient German literature. By studying the literature, they began to gather folktales (San par. 4). The brothers' greatest fame rests on the works they've produced together (San par. 6). The relationship between the lives ... • 63. The Girl Against The Brick Essay Narrative The Girl Against the Brick The scent of cigarette smoke and alcohol was overpowering. A group of rowdy university students crowded around the entrance of the pub, and slugged down beer and liquor. I worked at the café across from the pub and had seen this group there often. One student stood out from the rest. Standing tall, with watery blue eyes and dark blonde hair, a beautiful girl stood to the side against the crimson brick exterior of the pub in silence. "Elizabeth come take another shot with us!" a boy among the group shouted at her. With an indifferent look and a false smile, she took the glass and took another shot of liquor. She then leaned against the brick wall of the pub and looked to the cold night sky. She pulled out her phone and I could see in the illumination of the phone screen that her expression had changed to sadness and pain. She followed the same crowd each weekend, leaned on the cracked brick wall, with the same pained expressions as before. I wondered how someone could be so alone and upset when they were so loved by everyone around them. Weeks pass, the students never came to the pub. Then, after three months, I saw the familiar faces. There was a weakness among them, some even sitting in silence. I looked to the brick wall where Elizabeth always stood, but the wall was empty. In fact, from that weekend on, I never saw Elizabeth again. Recipe A dark twist on a classic take on ignored abuse. Serving Size: One Cooking Time: Three to Six ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. The Heart Reserves A Special Place For Music The heart reserves a special place for music. To many, music is more than a melody or a combination of sounds pulsating in ears; it brings out emotions, memories, and shared vibes. Whether a person is an avid listener or casually listens to music, everyone has a few specific albums that laid a foundation for the music they currently enjoy. Recently, I have rediscovered one of these albums, Madvillainy, when putting my old playlist on shuffle. The album consists of Daniel Dumile, the album's MC (rapper) who goes by many aliases, but most commonly as MF Doom, and Otis Jackson Jr., or Madlib. The underground hip–hop album was released in 2004 and is now considered a classic by many. The album's 22 tracks consist of skits, instrumentals, and rapping with most tracks around two minutes long. Madvillainy has proven to me to be a masterpiece and a consistently good listen. One of the qualities that set Madvillainy apart from its peers, is the superb production performance given by Madlib. The album's production is magnificent, even to Pitchfork standards, saying, "the samples are smart and never played–out, and the production and rhymes reveal a determined sense of cooperation, as Doom spouts off his most brilliant lyrical change–ups and production–conscious playoffs" (Pemberton). Like stated in Pitchfork, the production works cohesively with MF Doom's rapping. For example, on the song "Meat Grinder", the beat alone seems quirky, sounding like it belongs in an episode of Spongebob, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. The Tale Of The Fairy Tales As we grow up, we hear fairy tales and we read them into our lives. Every word and every image is imprinted into our minds. The fairy tales we read are never abandoned. They grow with us and our dreams become molds of the many morals and happily ever afters fairy tales display. We tell children fairy tales when they go to sleep and they read them in school and we even have them watch Disney adaptions that reinforce them further. Generally, they were everywhere while we grew up and they continue to be present while children are growing up now. But what influence do these stories have? We casually expose our children to these tales, but in some cases they can have particularly, harmful personal effects on them, although there is nothing completely or visibly "bad" about them or about the characters in them. Before we divulge our youth to these stories, we should assess their substance and see what sort of effect they may be having on them. They have received so much scrutiny and have been studied by many. Recognizing fairy tales effects on the minds of children is vital in their development. This paper will focus on the underlying messages that the average person wouldn't recognize in these everyday stories. There's a modern distort with fairy tales because while they still are widely popular with the youth, they influence children's self images, outlooks on reality and expectations for their futures, especially for young women. Comparing the Grimm Brothers' Rapunzel and Disney's Rapunzel Comparing the Grimm Brothers' Rapunzel and Disney's Rapunzel Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm also known as the Grimm brothers are historically known for their uniqueness both in their styles of writing and the exceptional illustrations of their works. Their age old literature has been told and retold with the essence of gothic architecture and contemporary children's stories for decades now. This essay will contrast the Grimm brothers story of Rapunzel and Disney's story of Rapunzel, it will also include comparing their illustrations with Molly Bang's theory. In the Grimms' story of Rapunzel illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky, the pictures observed are more aged looking. Viewing the pages, one can see that Zelinsky uses gothic architecture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Looking at the cover, the tower seems to be tall, but friendlier looking than in Zelinsky's version. Although the story of Rapunzel itself is nearly the same, the illustrations are what easily separate the time periods. There are also many similarities with shapes and colors that are associated with the Molly Bang theory found in both stories of Rapunzel. The tall and sharp edged corners and the darkness in the tower in Zelinsky's version reflect the feeling of fear, curiosity, and anxiousness. By making Rapunzel's long hair blonde, the author wants the audience to escape the feeling of fear and know that she is a protagonist in the story. The shapes are also a crucial factor in the Zelinsky's illustrations. Because the trend throughout Rapunzel is gothic, there are lots of pointy arches all through the story. These sharp, dark points reflect the same feeling of fear and scariness as the dark colors do. The prince in the story is painted happily, he is smiling in most of the pictures and he doesn't seem to have a point on him. He and Rapunzel are both very soft and round characters telling us that they are both protagonists. There are many happier shapes and curves found in Disney's version of Rapunzel. This book is more appeasing to children's eyes as well. If you look at the cover of this story, you see only a few sharp images on the castle to remind us that Rapunzel ... • 71. Little Snow White, Cinderella, And Rapunzel There are many classic fairy tales that have been passed down from generation to generation for many years. Today, most young children know the familiar tales of "Little Snow White", "Cinderella", and "Rapunzel." Although Walt Disney's versions differ from the Grimm Brothers versions, the themes of these stories all remain the same. In "Little Snow White", "Cinderella" and "Rapunzel" there is a theme of naivety among the three princesses. Snow–White, Cinderella and Rapunzel all have sweet and innocent personalities that cause them problems for them in their stories. In the short stories, "Little Snow White", "Cinderella", and "Rapunzel" by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, all three main characters suffer from their passive attitudes and their naivety and lack of intelligence which causes them conflict in all of their stories. Snow–White is the daughter of a king and queen, and when her mother was pregnant with her, she pricks her finger and sees three drops of blood. While she is looking at the drops she says, "would that my little daughter may be as white as that snow, as red as the blood, and as black as the ebony window–frame" (Grimm's "Little Snow White"). In the first paragraph of the story the reader can already assume that Snow–White will only be known for her looks. Her mother only wishes for her daughter to be beautiful. She does not ask for her to be smart, she only wishes for her to be a pretty face. This instance hinders Snow– White later on in the story when she does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Comparing Hansel And Gretel, By The Grimm Brothers Children are led to believe that Hansel and Gretel, in the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel" by the Grimm brothers, are the protagonists or "the good guys" of the story. Bettelheim believes that in fairy tales all characters are either good or bad and that they are not ambiguous. To be ambiguous is to have a double meaning or to be unclear about decisions that are made. After examining Hansel and Gretel's actions more thoroughly it is discovered that there is ambiguity in the choices they make, therefore rejecting Bettelheim's previous claim on how fairy tale characters are never ambiguous. Initially, I agreed with Bettelheim's statement on non ambiguous fairy tale characters because in the beginning they were merely victims of the antagonist's decisions, but then I started noticing Hansel and Gretel's counteractions and how it did not comply under the category of "good" or benign. Although Hansel and Gretel may appear to be "good" in the eyes of the children, Hansel and Gretel's ambiguous actions have led me to believe otherwise. One of the sinful actions that Hansel and Gretel commit is lying and even though they were lying to one of the witches, I still view them as ambiguous characters. As Hansel and Gretel try to find their way back home from the woods. after their wicked stepmother and confused father leave them out in the woods to starve, they find a gingerbread house and start to eat away at it, however the wicked witch comes along and asks who is nibbling away at her ... • 75. The Tale Of The Grimm 's Cinderella Have you ever had a dark and gloomy day? Imagine having that feeling every single day. The Grimm's Cinderella was written in 1812. 1812 was one of the harshest years for America. An event that formed it was the war against Great Britain and the United States. Not only was there a war, but there was also a series of disastrous harvests. Taxes got higher, and more than twenty people who were involved with a Luddite Act were hung. In 1812, there was also the only assassination of a prime minister, who was shot dead in the House of Commons. The Grimm Brothers have put the dark times of 1812 into their stories. Some of their stories contain violence, child abuse, and wicked mothers. They came up with these types of stories after their father died, and when they struggled out of school. That gave them enough time to research and put together a collection of folk tales. Now you can see why the Grimm's Cinderella was dark and gloomy. Although the plot stayed the same, over the years, the story did get lighter. Disney's Cinderella came out in 1950. In 1950, learning information was not by fear, but by engaging happiness. Disney's Cinderella transforms the Grimm's Cinderella into a happier atmosphere. While some similarities between Disney's Cinderella and Grimm's Cinderella are noticeable, the differences are pronounced, especially when referring to the slippers, her father, and the ball. Disney's Cinderella and Grimm's Cinderella are alike in many ways. One of the things that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Analysis Of The Poem ' Fairy Tales ' Fairy tales are full of tropes and stereotypes that exist from story to story, one of the main ones being the "happily ever after" ending. Most fairy tales, especially the traditional Perrault or Grimm versions, fall prey to this trope where the main goal is for the princess to find her prince, get married, and live happily ever after. Many critics, particularly feminist critics, find this trope to be problematic because of the extreme emphasis placed on marriage as women's main, if not only, objective in life. Karen Rowe, for example, states in her essay "Feminism and Fairy Tales", that "fairy tales perpetuate the patriarchal status quo by making female subordination seem a romantically desirable, indeed an inescapable fate" (342). In other words, Rowe relates the "romanticizations of marriage" portrayed in fairy tales with promotions of "passivity, dependency, and self–sacrifice" expected of women in their everyday lives (342). However, it can be dangerous to assume that every fairy tale conforms to the singular promotion of marriage as women's only option. While early fairy tales such as "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty" tend to glorify the romantic ideal of marriage, and in turn female subordination, contemporary tales and adaptations such as Brave and Frozen, are working to give women a more powerful position. In order to better illustrate the transformation of women from within tales like "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty" to the more recent portrayals, one must ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
