Educating Adults
Education can be defined as a program of instruction of a specified kind or level. In today's
society an education is an essential in order to be successful economically and socially. Most
people begin their education early on in life with elementary schools, with the hope or intent to
attend and graduate high school, an even furthermore go to college and earn a degree. At the same
time, this step by step educational process is a rather new idea, not more than twenty five years ago
people needed only education in particular job skills and fields to not only obtain a job, but not have

Teaching or educating children is common and it is simply student learning from their educated
adult elder. When attempting to teach adults many more factors come into consideration. Different
methods must be used when educating adults due to the different emotions a teacher may come
across while trying to educate full grown independent adults. Children are mostly forced to go to
school, by law, or parental guidance, yet adults have different reasons for participating in adult
learning programs; and adults also have different obstacles hindering their participation. Only when
programs use teaching methods that remove these emotional and other physical restraints will adult
education programs be successful in getting adults involved with the new educational process;
life–long learning. Adult education programs create an opportunity for under educated adults to
become a productive member of society, and the more citizens who become productive members of
society in turn helps improve our society as a whole. Adult education programs began to really
experience significant growth in participation during the 1970's, when the general public first
became aware that an interesting educational movement was in progress" (Cross 17). As Professor

2. Adult Learners Essay
As an educator, it is my role to teach as well as learn. The role of a teacher allows me to
experience both Andragogy and Pedagogy. "Andragogy" is "the art and science of helping adults
learn "where as "Pedagogy is the art and science of teaching children" (Knowles, 1984, p. 13). In
my profession, it is a daily task to teach concepts to children. Children are generally, teacher directed
learners meaning, they are always looking to the teacher to guide them in their learning. They seek
out answers and need direction to what they will be learning and what activities are provided to
solidify the learning concept. This is quite different than the self directed, or the adult learner.

Adult learners use their life experiences and knowledge to make connections which allows adults to
have a better understanding of a specific concept. " Adults have lived longer, seen and done more,
have the tendency to link their past experiences to anything new and validate new concepts based
on prior learning" (Pappas, 2013). As a teacher, I am constantly asking my students to make
connections so they can relate to what they are reading or learning about in class. This is a skill.
Adult learners have had the time to develop this skill and master it. This is yet another concept
children must learn so they can use it in their adult life to effectively learn. "Those who take the
initiative learn more and better than those waiting to be taught" (Gibbs, 2010). Adult learning is
primarily driven by goals. Pappas (2013) mentions the concept of motivation. Adults are
motivated to set goals so they can improve job skills and achieve professional growth. I am
passionate about learning and feel one quality of being a great teacher is to be a lifelong learner.
That being said, I also strive to learn more so I can be the best at what I do. This is a personal goal.
There are many professional development opportunities offered in my district, but they are not
enough for what I want to achieve. Thinking about how children learn, I am constantly asked, "is this
good enough?" when I do not set specific parameters on an assignment.

A. Global Assessment of Community Based Adult Education. This includes most important
contributions they can make to society in the face of what are considered the most significant

Interfacing of popular education with community development. Popular education should be
integrated with relevant existing social movements.
Adult civic education should enable citizens to develop the ability to participate effectively in all
social, political, and economic institutions.
The adult educator should be neutral, thereby allowing all citizens to develop their own positions
and develop the ability to analyze them.
Programs should be developed on the immediate needs in becoming fully informed and participating
adults.
Adult educators role is to assure that teaching is directly related to he required skills needed for
democratic participation and self–government.
D. What are the positive and negative forces that will need to be dealt with over the next 10 years in
accomplishing realignments believed to be necessary?
Negative Community development seeks reformation not transformation.
Positive Communities realize they cannot be
