talking I realized that they were all telling something different. One was telling a story about how
she saran wrapped a car last night, which was a lie, she would never do that in her life. One was

Two of the greatest short stories written back in late 19th and early 20th centuries are still read by
many people. The two stories are "A Rose for Emily" written by William Faulkner and Guy De
Maupassant's "The Necklace". Faulkner's book is about a woman named Emily Grierson's life and
her horrible secret she hides. The other book is about a materialistic woman named Mathilde Loisel
loses a fake necklace and find out to be a fake one after ten years later. Although these stories are

Also these items can reflect the strong symbolism in it. Faulkner used a rose, but De Maupassant
used the necklace to represent the main character's emotions in two items. The difference in those
symbols is that a rose has only appeared on the title but the necklace is the whole flow of the story.

During conversations between adults there is an understanding that sarcasm and irony is not used for
the purpose to be insulting but it is used for humor. Children between the ages of five and six years
old started to understand the meaning behind sarcasm and irony but do not grasp the objective of

"A Modest Proposal" is a social commentary written by Jonathan Swift, he uses techniques such as
irony, satire, and sarcasm to mock the Irish government of his time. After reading Swift's essay half
way through, one might not believe how graphic and shocking it's been written. He wrote a letter
suggesting they sell the children of the poor to the wealthy families, as this will provide food,

Irony?" designed an experiment that allowed individuals to understand the age range in which
children are able to distinguish and understand the concept of sarcasm. The experiment consisted of
70 participants (36 male, 34 female) ranging from the ages of 6–10 years. In this experiment
twenty–four puppets, who were dressed to resemble children, were used as characters in a puppet
show. Twelve puppet shows were presented each ending with either an ironic, literal, ironic
compliment, or literal compliment. The puppet show went as follows: "This is Sam, and this is John.
They play on the same soccer team. It is the last few minutes of a game. Outcome 1: John kicks the

Generally, lazy people are not admired. Society, as a whole, prefers those who are willing and able
to actively and positively contribute to its progress. Effort is praised while indifference can typically
be seen as shameful. Christopher Morley understands this. In his short essay, "On Laziness," he
indirectly confronts the slothful in an effort to make them see the error of their ways. Morley deals
with the topic of laziness in a overly sarcastic and satirical tone to stress the absurdity of the trait.
Early in his essay, Morley utilizes irony that made it evident that his essay on the supposed benefits
of laziness is meant to be treated as a satire. He in no way is actually believing what he is explicitly
stating. The opening statement can only reasonably be viewed as an intentional joke. Morley claims
that he intends "to write an essay on Laziness but [is] too indolent to [even] do so." Yet, the paper
does not end here; he continues on and completes an entire academic essay, blatantly contradicting
his first sentence in it. If Morley stays true to his words and fully believes in the value of idleness,
no work would have been made to defend it. He makes the sarcasm even more obvious through his
deliberate choice of words. While criticizing activeness and energy, Morley spoke of having "a
determined effort to be more languid and demure." It is paradoxical to try to be lazy. Putting in

Barbara Ehrenreich employed the use of humor multiple times in Nickel and Dimed; it was perhaps
her most frequently used rhetorical device. Ehrenreich was trying to portray the tragedy and
heartbreak of the situation by using that sort of hopeless, sardonic humor. She also used her humor
as a way to camouflage topics that would otherwise be off–limits. Although some of the humor

(Oxford). Brian Dickerson, a free press columnist, does just that to bring the readers over to his side.
He utilizes a very convincing combination of sarcasm and emotional appeal in his column called
"Promises to Keep? Not in the Government", that ultimately seduces the reader to believe exactly
the point he tries to get across. Dickerson uses emotional appeal in a tricky way. Instead of the usual
positive emotions, Dickerson angers his audience right of the bat, instilling a fury which is directed

Even the title he uses "Promises to keep? Not in the Government", prepares his audience
immediately for a sarcastic mood. Dickerson's opening sentence does just the same. Even though
this is a serious topic, he doesn't take away from his influence with sarcasm, but just the opposite–he
builds on it. The first sentence of Dickerson's column, "Ok, so maybe it shouldn't have been called a
promise grant" is flawlessly toped of with the closing line, it should have been called "the While–

Elizabeth Bishop's poem "One Art" is a lyrical poem, as opposed to one that is narrative and story–
like, where the speaker is emotionally performing a kind of self–therapy in writing about her
struggles in dealing with the many losses in her life, from the simplest of losses such as a set of
keys, to the most painful loss, that of a loved one, most likely the person in her life to whom she was
the closest. On a surface level reading, Ms. Bishop is suggesting that dealing with loss is an art
form, and because there are so many opportunities in life where these situations present themselves,
that with enough practice this "art" should be easy to master. But through the poem's stanza
development, it becomes painfully obvious that this poet is using irony and sarcasm to express what
the speaker really feels, which is there is never enough time in life to master the art of losing. One
never actually learns to master this art. Mishaps and catastrophes, which she terms disasters, just
keep showing up. On a surface level reading, "One Art" treats losing as an everyday occurrence, and
because it is so common, mastering the art of losing should be easy, almost second nature. In the

Bryson's last visit to the UK was in 1973, and he remembers almost everything his last trip
comprised of. Therefore, his expectations of the Britain he came to see were severely shattered,
when he realised that it had hardly changed at all. 'When we at last began to accumulate children, it

An Analysis Of Sylvia Plath's Suburban Sonnet And Sylvia...
The mid twentieth century was an era where women would have to strip parts of their identity in
order to conform to the societal, patriarchal expectations of the time (Thomson, 2013). Gwen
Harwood's poem 'Suburban Sonnet' and Sylvia Plath's 'The Applicant' give insight into the
disenfranchisement of women of this era. This essay will argue that Harwood's and Plath's poems
both challenge the romanticism associated with marriage, consequently exploiting the underlying
societal hardship and conformity as a result of the patriarchy. To support this overarching argument
there will be two key sub–arguments that demonstrate how the two poems compare to one another.
The first sub–argument will centre around 'Suburban Sonnet' and will criticise how the role of
motherhood destabilises the traditional sonnet conventions, resulting in exploiting marriage as a
means to conform and control women. The second sub–argument is in reference to 'The Applicant',
where the symbolism associated with marriage is ironically displaced, accordingly subverting the
social constructions placed around marriage.
'Suburban Sonnet' displays many forms of symbolism throughout to destabilise motherhood through
the genre. The first device to be analysed is the use of the sonnet genre. The title suggests this,
however, the rhyming pattern and the number of lines uncovers this also. Traditionally, sonnets were

After a few hours of reading I began to wonder where my family fit into these theories, then I
realized that I was not reading the ?Handbook of Abnormal Family Theories?.
I wanted to start this week with some questions / statements about a few of the theories. Starting
with Bereavement theory, I would be interested to find out if there is a significant difference in the
effect size when the loss of relationship is permanent (due to death) as compared to the temporary

In reality some of it upset me a little because there are a lot more theories driven by human greed
than by love. Ideally I hope to be altruistic in my actions in a means to provide a model for my
children. I hope to do this not so I can reap the benefits, in fact I hope that my children do not have

What can a character that lived in 1700s Italy have in common with a teenager in the 1960s?
Though it may seem impossible Edgar Allan Poe's character Montresor in The Cask of Amontillado
shares similar characteristics to John Updike's A&P teenage Sammy. Both of these characters share
sarcastic tendencies and a need to make a name of himself. Though, each man differs in the way he
goes about making that name. While Montresor decides murder is the way, Sammy quits his job to
be noticed. One way that Montresor and Sammy are similar is that they are both extremely sarcastic.

Socrates, the great philosopher and teacher was a man of great wisdom. His way of sharing this

him. Plato adored Socrates right until the very end. Apology Plato's recount of what happened in the
courtroom on the day of Socrates' trial. During the trial Plato, and other students of Socrates, are

accusers of the court simply do not. From studying Plato's Apology I have learned that Socrates was

In Fred Stenson's "In Search of a Modest Proposal" the author states, using his daughter's first essay
assignment as an example, that essays are inherently personal and should reflect the author's own
ideas, and that essay curriculums are flawed in their formulaic approach to teaching what is
supposed to be a creative form of writing. Stenson's essay uses a liberal amount of sarcasm to get his
point across, and coupled with a reliance on personal examples his overall argument loses some

daily routine, her sentences are short, definitive, showing her distaste for Phil. "To Phil, it was work.

office instead of a suit, because it was the weekend." Goodman contrastingly uses lengthy, detailed
sentences and phrases when describing Phil's family, to convey her pity for them and show that Phil

Of Elizabeth Minchin's 'The Expression Of Sarcasm In...
Elizabeth Minchin's "The Expression of Sarcasm in the 'Odyssey'", published in 2010, analyzes
Homer's usage of sarcasm in the "Odyssey" and explains its significance. Minchin's critical analysis
peaked my interest specifically because it studies not only the expression, but the reception of
sarcasm as seen in the "Odyssey". Minchin suggests that in lines 397–399 of Book XVII, when
Telemachus tells Antinous "...Antinous, as a father of his son you take good care/ of me, when you
tell our stranger guest to get out of the palace/ with a strict word", that Telemachus' apparent
politeness is superficial. Telemachus' sarcastic comments aimed towards Antinous can be interpreted
in two ways. Not only was the comment intended to be a bitter jab at Antinous, but as Minchin
mentions, Telemachus' bitterness "...works as an affiliative strategy between Telemachus and his
actual father" (Minchin 545). I agree with Minchin's findings, at this point in the poem, Telemachus
is the only one that knows that the beggar is Odysseus. Telemachus' sarcastic tone instills a sense of
familiarity between him and his father, as they have not seen each other in years, thus strengthening
the bond between them. Minchin's claim is plausible, given that the intention of lines 397–399 were
to convey attitude in the form of a taunt towards Antinous as a form of humility. Telemachus not
only wanted to subtly berate Antinous, but do it in a way that would also serve as a reintroduction of
his father–son relationship with Odysseus. Book XX is when Ktesippos, a suitor is introduced. With
Odysseus still disguised as a beggar, Ktesippos demonstrates false means of hospitality towards him.
It isn't until Ktesippos offers the beggar a "guest gift" of an ox–hoof, in which he proceeds to throw
it at Odysseus's head and misses. Odysseus reacts with a sardonic smile which infuriates Ktesippos
even more than him failing to hit his head with the ox–hoof. It is at this point when Minchin states
that the bitter ox–hoof incident could have prompted Odysseus to abandon his beggar disguise and
kill all the suitors, however, I disagree. If Odysseus would have abandoned his disguise at this point
in the poem simply because of Ktesippos' sarcastic display of

In "It's a Woman's World," Eavan Boland utilizes several literary techniques to reveal the poem's
complex conception of a "woman's world." Boland sheds light on the static nature of a woman's role
in society, which sparks their desire to overcome the societal limitations that is put upon them by
men. Through her sarcastic title, use of personification, and critical tone, Boland is able to expose
both genders stereotypical responsibilities and to convey society's desire to silence women's outrage
against their role in this world.
With the use of quotations, it is clear that Boland uses sarcasm to the words "woman's world," in
order to represent just how ironic it is for it to be their world when women have no say in anything
unless a man gives consent. The choice of details and use of a sarcastic title helps Boland portray

Scarlet Letter Rhetorical Analysis Essay
In his essay "On the Scarlet Letter," D.H. Lawrence criticizes Hester's immoral behavior for her
adulterous actions. Lawrence views her as a shameful member of Puritan society and centers his
argument on her sin and its effects on the story's plot. D.H. Lawrence's use of different literary
techniques strengthens his claim that Hester is not the heroine through his sarcastic tone, abrupt
syntax, and biblical allusions. Lawrence incorporates a sarcastic tone in his essay to belittle the
adulteress because she is not deserving of a high reputation. Hester is degraded because she is
shameful to all women. Lawrence sarcastically insists that she be put "upon the scaffold and worship
her there" (Lawrence). Since the author does not approve of Hester's adultery, he uses sarcasm so his
readers can envision another side of Hester as a woman who is worthy of anything but praise.
Lawrence sarcastically comments that she is being worshipped, which contrasts with Nathaniel

Lawrence's disrespect for Hester regarding the unnecessary worship she receives in the novel, he is
also sardonic when he describes her appearance. Hester's scarlet letter only represents her shameful
sin of adultery in Lawrence's eyes. He speculates that the women will be "envying [Hester's] sin,
and beating [her] because [she's] stolen an advantage over them" (Lawrence). His sarcastic tone
indicates that he has no respect for any woman who commits adultery. Because Lawrence believes
that it is the woman, not the man, who is at fault for the development of an unorthodox relationship,
he immediately blames Hester for creating such a relationship with Dimmesdale. Lawrence will not
change his opinion on Hester no matter what she does in attempt to better her reputation. Lawrence's
use of abrupt syntax supports his views on Hester because it acts as a quick list of insults. Equally
important, it provides the reader with direct reasons as to why Hester should be berated in the novel.
