Early Deployment Of The Dutch West Indies Company
Introduction
The early deployment of the Dutch East Indies Company (1609) is the beginning of the adoption of
a sophisticated method of auditing.(Sukoharsono and Gaffikin, 1995) Hence, the double entry
bookkeeping system idea was dispersed and established as a guideline. After a decade post the
declaration of independence by Indonesia, in 1957, experts develops a new set of rules called IAI
which was documented in a book termed PAI. However, in 1966, Indonesia began to adopt the
International Accounting Standard Committee (IASC) guideline that then develops into IASB due to
demands in assembling national accounting standards with a high–quality global accounting
standards. (IASplus, 2015). Furthermore, due to the change of IASC to IASB, ... Show more content

By putting foreign countries for an example, according to Kilic, Uyar and Ataman (2014) Small and
Medium–sized Entities (SMEs) in Turkey are greatly advantaged by the early adoption of IFRS.
Moreover, Turkey translates the IFRS into Turkish to support SMEs in practicing IFRS.Furthermore,
SMEs are put on the same level with large entities in the nature of financial statements. Hence,
professional traders can 't take advantage from the SME 's due to the same level of simple
understandings of the IFRS. (Jordan, 2013) This will significantly increase the attraction of
economic growth as it increases opportunities and expansions of SMEs to develop further in
Indonesia. The number of SMEs in Indonesia were recorded as 99.98% out of the total number
enterprises in country supports for the change positively. (Rahman, 2004)Another perk of adopting
the IFRS is the significant increase of consistency and transparency of financial reporting.
According to Radebaugh et al. (1995, A German firm Daimler–Benz constructed a financial report
by using U.S. GAAP that supposed to be recorded on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The
organisation highlighted $2.45 billion in hidden reserve as it was allowed under German accounting
standard. Different guidelines have made the company to expose itself to multiple reporting in
foreign stock exchanges costs and benefits, leading to inconsistent reports. Further, the increase in
transparency also enhance the ability of an organisation to

The East India Company
The East India Company was a British joint–stock company establish on the 31st of December,
1600 under the original name 'The Company of Merchants of London trading into the East Indies.'
Over the next hundreds of years the Company set a sail attempting to find riches in trade on their
journeys to these new lands. They found value in crops such as indigo, salt, cotton, silk, opium and
other cash crops that the barren land of Europe lacked. This would be the company that would set
sail to the land of India and dominate its soil from the middle of 1700's to the middle of the 1800's.
In a little over fifty years the East India Company was transformed from a body of traders
controlling a scattered group of commercial settlements round the coasts of India into the rulers of
provinces with a population popularly supposed in Britain to contain fifty or sixty million
inhabitants. The Company was able to find its growth and power from wealthy merchants and
aristocrats that would invest their money into the Company after seeing how successful they were
becoming. A healthy amount of these wealthy investors were part of the British Parliament. This
intertwined government views and beliefs with the business side of views and beliefs. With more
and more backing though, the Company slowly grew a ship or two every now and then until they
were a full fleet of trade ships moving massive amounts of crops. Colonies were eventually set up
and the land was taken for the new Englishmen, who

Express Indy West by Dave Kehlor
Financial Condition Express Indy West has been profitable ever since its opening in 1995 by Dave
Kehlor. Since Express Employment Professionals is a privately–held company, the financial records
of the company are not available but after speaking with Dave, he was able to give some insight on
the success of the company. Dave and his wife open Express Indy West in 1995 and was the only
Express office in Indianapolis until 2005. He then bought the Lebanon office in late 2004 along with
becoming the developer for the whole state of Indiana acting as a mentor for all Express offices in
Indiana. Kehlor (2014) explained that Express Indianapolis (which includes 5 locations) generated
between $12–13 million in 2004. In 2009 right after the recession, Express Indy generated roughly
$18.3 million. This alone was a big jump for Express Indy, especially with the addition of the other
four offices. This was an 82% jump in sales and put a total of 628 people to work. In 2012, Express
Indy generated $36.3 million which was slightly higher than its 2013 sales of $33.4 million. This
discrepancy was due to the loss of two of Express's largest clients of Express moving out of town.
During this time, Express had roughly 400 associates at these two companies in which Express took
a big hit. Although sales generated during 2013 were lower, Express had billed clients roughly 2
million hours and had roughly 11,050 people working for the year. This was an 83% jump in hours
since the recession.

There are a few rules on U.S. citizens traveling to Cuba and these rules have now changed so that
U.S. airlines are allowed to make regular flights to and from Cuba, this is a relatively new law for
commercial flights, saying that the U.S embargo against Cuba was imposed in the 60's and not only
limited but also banned all imports and exports to and from the country of Cuba from the United
States.
According to Cuban Nature Travel, "Cuba is a multi–ethnic nation, home to people of different
ethnic and national backgrounds". Additionally, the Cuban nature travel article also stated that with a
population of over 11 million people, the age structure of the people of Cuba goes as about 984,607
Men to about 931,167 Women also, the life expectancy in Cuba is about 78–79 years of age. The
main religion of Cuba is Roman Catholic, prior to Castro's power, and the official language of Cuba
is none other than Spanish. Also according to the Cuban nature travel page, Cuban education
spending is about 13.6 of the Gross domestic product. Now comparing to the United States with just
under 7 percent spent on education, of the GDP, Cubans have a leg up in the field of education. The

Jean Rhys 's Wide Sargasso Sea Essay
In Jean Rhys's novel Wide Sargasso Sea, Edward Rochester can be considered as an embodiment of
patriarchal and colonial oppression. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, patriarchal means,
"relating to, characteristic of, or designating a society or culture in which men tend to be in positions
of authority and cultural values and norms are seen as favouring men..." ("Patriarchal") moreover
colonial means "of, belonging to, or relating to a colony..." ("Colonial"). In addition, oppression
means "prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority, control, or power; tyranny;
exploitation" ("Oppression"). In order to discuss Edward's role in patriarchal and colonial forms of
oppression, his marriage, and emotional connection to Antoinette, symbolic representation, and
cultural differences will be analysed and discussed, focusing on any evidence of both forms of
oppression.
Through Edward's marriage to Antoinette, one can see his colonial British background and how this
influences his role as an embodiment of patriarchal oppression. For instance, Edward is looking to
take the stature of a matured and wealthy, independent male by British standards (Kendrik 235). In
order to achieve this Edward needs to present as a dominant and independent husband in possession
of a submissive and dependant wife. This leads Edward into never completely accepting Antoinette
as an equal as he views her as a prized possession obtained through marriage; her beauty and wealth

The Immigration Act Of West Indies
Introduction Since the enactment of the 1965 Immigration Act, the United States has seen a huge
arrival of West Indian immigrants in New York City, and more so here in Richmond Hill Queens.
The names "Caribbean" and "West Indies" are exchangeable, since the countries and islands that
make up the West Indies are all situated in or around the Caribbean Sea or have since join the
Caribbean Community as member of the CARICOM States. Today, the Guyanese population in
Richmond Hill Queens has expanded tremendously and is concentrated mainly in and around areas
such as Liberty Avenue which is known as the main business strip in Richmond Hill, South Ozone
Park, 101 Avenues and around Rockaway Boulevard and the JFK area.
Moreover, sociologists like Nancy Foner, Mary C. Waters and Philip Kasinitz, have all studied the
arrival patterns of this group and documented numerous findings on this groups' experiences, their
level of integration, their cultural and racial identities, and multinational associations but their major
focus was on the Afro– migrant experiences and seem to neglect the experiences of the West Indians
that were of Indian descent.
Methods and Procedures
This paper will help to analyze the information collected from a series of interviews I have
conducted with several women in the in the Richmond Hill area. I talked to about five immigrants,
Indo– Guyanese women living in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York for a few hours each. In order

Imagery In Elaine Potter Kincaid's 'Girl'
Elaine Potter Richardson, more famously known as Jamaica Kincaid, is recognized for her writings
that suggest depictions of relationships between families, mainly between a mother and daughter,
and her birth place, Antigua, an island located in the West Indies. She is also familiarized with
Afrocentrism and feminist point of views. Kincaid's work is filled heavily with visual imagery that
produces a mental picture in readers that helps them connect stronger to the reading. An example of
this really shines through in her short story piece, "Girl." This short story describes the life of a
lower class woman living in the West Indies, and also incorporates thick detailing between the
relationship between her and her mother. Jamaica Kincaid structures the story as if her mother is
speaking to her. She writes broad, but straight to the point, allowing readers to imagine to picture her
experience. Kincaid uses visual imagery and repetition consistently throughout "Girl" to reveal the
theme and tone of the story; conflictual affair between a mother and daughter. In order for readers to
be able to bloom their visual imagery from "Girl," Kincaid uses repetition in two main ideas
throughout the short story. The first idea she really wants to get across is singing benna, a type of
music that centers on scandalous gossip. She writes, "is it true that you sing benna in Sunday
school?" This is toward the beginning of the story, and readers who do not recognize the word
"benna" will be

Christopher Columbus : A New Route Or A New World?
A New Route or a New World? In the year 1492, towards the end of the Hundred Years' War,
Christopher Columbus had set off to discover a western route to India. During this time of his
sailing, Christopher Columbus had made an account of his actions and what had occurred during his
voyage across the sea to India. 3 months into the voyage, He had finally arrived at an island of
which he believed to be the east side of India. In his excitement, he had labeled the inhabitants of
the island as Indians, and reported his success while also exclaiming about how woefully lacking the
"Indians" were in terms of technological, cultural, and economical areas. However, also in his
excitement, he had not realized that he had not landed on the east side of India, but an island off the
coast of the continent of America. This paper will prove that Christopher Columbus was wrong in
his thoughts that he had arrived in India. Throughout Columbus' Logs, it is mentioned that
Christopher Columbus was set on discovering the Indies. This could be seen numerous times in the
logs, ranging from the very beginning, "Here upon I left the city of Granada, on Saturday, of May
12th, 1492, and proceeded to Palos......and proceed till I arrived at the Indies", to even labelling the
indigenous natives who had greeted him and his crew as Indians in his letter back to the king and
queen of Spain, "....On my arrival at that sea, I had taken some Indians by force from the first island
that I came to". According to

Letter For The Nomination Of Bertram Omar Leon For A...
I am proud to send this letter of support for the nomination of Bertram Omar Leon for a national
award, as in my opinion, he has devoted himself to sustain and selfless voluntary service. Bertram
has been serving his community for over 30 years now in an unassuming, conscientious,
methodically and appreciative manner. He also portrays the characteristics and qualities that are
admired in our community. He goes out of her way to help people in need by organizing charity
activities often at his own expense.
Also, his willingness to take on difficult projects like assisting our own St Lucia Community
Healthcare & Ambulance Project to achieve its aims of kitting out the Fire & Ambulances Service
on the island with essential patient lifting chairs; the National Committee for St Lucia Hurricane
Relief Appeal where he was at the helms, collecting essential items for distribution; his stewardship
of the relief effort during the recent Storm disaster in St Lucia; his overall support for his local
community and youth development are just some of his many contributions. I am also aware of his
desire to promote UK Caribbean diaspora development via his many associations with the
Caribbean diaspora communities. He has already successfully influenced the St Lucia government
to adopt a Diaspora Policy, which was recently approved, to engage and ensure better inclusion of
overseas national in the country's national development plans. He is regarded as an unofficial

Cathy Fink Case Study
Cathy Fink– after spending more time than I probably should have, I was able to track–down the
original source of her money. (I didn't see anything about this in Rick Jacob's RE record). It turns
out that Cathy is the granddaughter of Theodore Baumritter, the co–founder of what today is known
as Ethan Allen Interiors–the well–known furniture retailer. The Baumritter Corporation was
established in 1932, later changing its name to Ethan Allen Inc. in 1969. In 1980, Interco Inc. bought
the company for $150 million in a "private deal." It's not known if the acquisition was an "all cash"
deal, or how "Ted" and his brother–in–law and co–founder Frank Ansell may have divided up the
proceeds. In any case, Ted Baumritter died in 1994 just five weeks after his wife Florence. Cathy's
mother Aline "Bunny" Fink and Aunt Shamita "Sookie" Jacobs (Rick Jacobs' mother), were Ted and
Florence's only children, and Cathy was one of only four grandchildren–so there were relatively few
heirs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So a wealth estimate is a bit tough to determine. Larkspur Data estimates that Cathy is "worth"

The Importance Of The Black Land In Jamaica
WHY THE STATUE OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS MUST COME DOWN IN JAMAICA
Travel across the globe and you will find no shortage of monuments and statues paying homage to
those who have made significant contribution to society or to their individual nations.
In Kemet "The Black Land" also known as Egypt, you will find one the oldest monument on earth.
Sitting on the west bank of the Nile in Gaza, is the Great Sphinx of Giza, a symbol of our African
greatness. Looking down on Parliament Square in London is Nelson Mandela, the anti–apartheid
revolutionary. In Barbados you have Bussa, the national hero who led the great slave revolt in 1816.
His statue symbolizes the breaking of the chains of slavery. Swing over to Guyana and you will see
the national hero, Kofi, a man stolen from Ghana, enslaved in Guyana and later became liberator
and leader of the 1763 slave revolt. Then there is Gaspar Yanga, the African national hero of
Mexico, leader and liberator of the Maroon of Mexico, and the list goes on.
In Jamaica we have our own fleet of monuments and statues, a proud representation of our own
history, culture and achievements. Historically, Jamaicans are a proud, strong–willed people known
to the world as freedom fighters, revolutionaries even trend setters. Going all the way back to 18
century Jamaica and you will see the Maroons led by Nanny and her brothers fighting and standing
up to Europeans powers. In the second Maroon war of 1795, 300 Maroons stood their ground

Motivation In The Chesapeake Colonies
Motivation was the greatest determining factor behind the radically different societies being planted
in the Chesapeake, West Indies, and New England colonies. The force that drives a man is the desire
of that man's heart. Whether in search of riches or fame, adventure or an escape from tyranny, the
spirit of man is determined to seek its heart's desire at any cost. Greed is the inordinate desire to
acquire or possess far beyond the dictates of basic survival and comfort, including but not limited to
an insatiable drive to gain wealth, goods, objects of abstract value, and to obtain status, and power.
The Chesapeake Colony began as a private venture, financed by the Virginia Company, located in
London. This was a group of wealthy investors, whose only objectives were to increase their wealth,
and to expand England's holding around the world. These investors expected to find gold and silver,
a passage to Asia for a simpler trade route, and possible valuable products for trade or sale in
Europe. In 1607, under King James I, the Virginia Company was granted a charter, giving the
company the right to settle anywhere from roughly present–day North Carolina to New York state.
Aristocrats and gentlemen, seeking their fortune, embarked on the adventure of their lifetime. They
reached Chesapeake Bay on April 26, 1607, and named their settlement, Jamestown in honor of the
King. Ill–equipped for the intense labor and harsh conditions that lay ahead, for many of them, this

A Primary Source Of The West Indies By Henry Nelson Coleridge
The document I chose to analyze as a primary source is Six Months in The West Indies by Henry
Nelson Coleridge. This is a small journal published in 1825 that follows Henry N. Coleridge's trips
around the West Indies with his uncle, William Hart Coleridge who is a bishop of Barbados. While
on his trip throughout the isles, Coleridge not only comments on the local governments and
ecosystems but the treatment of slaves and the institution of slavery as well. His viewpoints are in
no way abolitionist, but he does appear to have a vein of sympathy for slaves of the West Indies.
Many of his viewpoints are on how society and slave owners in the West Indies could better the
lives of their slaves, none of them abolition, but for instance he suggests that "one of the most
effectual ways for bettering the slaves would be thorough and humanizing education of the masters
themselves (p.54)." While this argument, I feel, is not uncommon of a well–educated, English,
relative of a high ranking religious official during this time period, I find it interesting to compare
Coleridge's accounts of slavery throughout the West Indies with that of an actual slave, Mary Prince,
in the same region. Mary Prince was a slave in the Caribbean, who was bought and sold to multiple
owners, on multiple isles, eventually gaining her freedom in Britain in 1828. This secondary source,
The History of Mary Prince, was transcribed by Suzanna Strickland and edited by the abolitionist
who took her in, Thomas Pringle

Research Paper On West Indies Cricket
West Indies cricket, the envy of the world for decades past because of its exiting and brilliant
batsmen, fast and furious fast bowlers, and its acrobatic fielders, and undisputed champions of the
world for 19 years up to 1995, is now at rock bottom and looks like getting deeper and deeper.
In fact, based on the events of this week, and after all that have gone on in the past 15 or 20 years, a
good bet is that the West Indies days are numbered.
Top Eight Teams
Although it is common knowledge that the West Indies have lost 80 of 132 Test matches while
winning only 14 against the top eight teams since losing 5–0 to England in 2000 and 5–0 to

and then sit down and twiddle his thumbs, with nothing to do or eat, just looking on from the

No, it is not right, it was never right, and it can never be right.

to produce for West Indies cricket. This is one to ensure that what is happening now never happens

The At The University Hospital Of The West Indies, St....
DISCUSSION: The Royal Children 's hospital Melbourne 2010 stated, documentation of the nurses
are very valuable and essential for optimum communication of care because it provides sufficient
evidence of the care given to patients. However, the scrutiny of nurses' documentation had been
observed especially within the nurses ' theoretical framework, Apdie/Soapie. As a means to solve
this problem a cross sectional study was conducted, aimed at examining the extent to which nurses
adhered to the Apdie/Soapie theoretical framework in nursing documentation at the University
Hospital of the West Indies, St. Andrew Jamaica. It was observed that a significant amount of nurses
notes were documented using theoretical frameworks ADPIE or SOAPIE. However, of the two
theoretical frameworks, nurses utilized the ADPIE mostly when compared to the Soapie. A reason
for this figure being higher is based on the hospital policy. At the University hospital of the West
Indies, nurses must document following the ADPIE theoretical framework. According to Mowatt et
al., 2013, the purpose of nurses ' documenting is important, however, nurses started to document
using more than one theoretical frameworks. Similarly to the research conducted, the results showed
that a minority of 2.8% uses other theoretical framework while documenting. Other forms of
documentation includes the narrative charting, Focus, Soapier, Pie and Dar (Berman et al., 2015,
pp284–286). However, Blair& Smith 2012

Columbus and De la Casas Essay
Columbus and de la Casas make two very different observations of the new world. Columbus made
many detailed descriptions in his letter to the King Ferdinand, who had financed his journey with
the intentions of completing three very clear goals. The first, "to procure riches for the Spanish
empire," the second, "to find a new route to the East Indies," and lastly, "to convert native peoples to
Christianity (Casper et al., 4)." de la Casas had a much different intention than Columbus for why he
journeyed to the new world. He traveled as a son of a poor merchant and observed all of the wrong
doings that were happening to the native people. He later returned to Spain for the remainder of his
life to write about all of the awful things that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He described them as timid and scared people until he had gained their trust. It seems that when
these people really trusted the voyagers, they described them as people from the sky, heaven sent.
This is so ironic because of all the wrongdoings that would happen to them on the second voyage.
de la Casas describes the second voyage that he embarked upon with Columbus. He described how
each island was depopulated and destroyed. His observations of the land were no so descriptive of
the native people and the land, but of the gruesome images the Spanish painted upon the Indies. de
la Casas says, "...the Indians realize that these men had not come from Heaven (9)." He goes into
detail about how the Christians would take over villages and had no mercy describing one
particularly crude act to show how ruthless the Spanish were. He says, "Then they behaved with
such temerity and shamelessness that the most powerful ruler of the islands had to see his own wife
raped by a Christian officer (9)." The Spanish were so coward and angry anytime an Indian was

The Total Contribution Of Travel And Tourism Essay
Each Caribbean country is diverse and has its own natural resources and industries. These industries
include bauxite/alumina, agricultural–processing, light manufacturing, rum, cement, metal, paper,
chemical products, telecommunications, etc. Though energy and manufacturing account for large
percentages of GDP in individual countries, tourism is by far the most prevalent industry (The
World Factbook, n.d.). According to the CIA's World Factbook, tourism is top industry in at least 17
of the 26 countries (See Appendix E) (n.d).
Tourism & Travel
The total contribution of travel and tourism includes the direct contribution (accommodations,
transportation, entertainment, attractions, retail purchases, etc.), as well as indirect contributions as
well as investment spending; the impact of purchases from supplies; and the spending of direct and
indirect employees. The total contribution of travel and tourism in the Caribbean accounts for 14.8%
of GDP in 2015 for a total of US$ 53.1 billion, and was expected to reach 14.9% of GPD in 2016 for
a total of US$ 54.5 billion. By 2026, travel and tourism is expected to account for 16.2% of GPD for
a total of US$ 76.2 billion. Over 2,255,000 jobs were generated in 2015 (13.3% of total
employment) and is expected to be over 2,276,000 jobs in 2016 (13.4% of total employment). By
2026, travel and tourism is expected to account for 2,786,000 jobs (15.2% of total employment).

The Immigration Act Of West Indies
Introduction
Since the enactment of the 1965 Immigration Act, the United States has seen a huge arrival of West
Indian immigrants in New York City, and more so here in Richmond Hill Queens. The names
"Caribbean" and "West Indies" are exchangeable, since the countries and islands that make up the
West Indies are all situated in or around the Caribbean Sea or have since join the Caribbean
Community as member of States. Today, the Guyanese population in Richmond Hill Queens has
expanded tremendously and is concentrated mainly in and around areas such as Liberty Avenue
which is known as the main business strip in Richmond Hill, South Ozone Park, 101 avenues and
around Rockaway Boulevard and the JFK area.
Moreover, sociologists like Nancy Foner, Mary C. Waters and Philip Kasinitz, have all studied the
arrival patterns of this group and documented numerous findings on this groups' experiences, their
level of integration, their cultural and racial identities, and multinational associations but their major
focus was on the Afro– migrant experiences and seem to overlook the experiences of the West
Indians that were of Indian descent.
Methods and Procedures
This paper will help to analyze the information collected from a series of interviews I have
conducted with several women in the in the Richmond Hill area. I talked to about five immigrants,
Indo– Guyanese women living in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York for a few hours each. In order

Christopher Columbus' Motivations to Sail West for the Indies
Christopher Columbus lived in an age of Moslem expansion in the east. With the fall of
Constantinople in 1453, direct land routes to the Indies were closed to European merchants and
traders, thus creating the need to find a sea route to the Indies. Portugal had spent years sailing the
coast of Africa to reach the Indies, but Columbus thought he had a better way: sailing west. With the
defeat of the Moors in 1492 Queen Isabella of Spain was willing to consider to Columbus' proposal
to sail west. The motivations of Columbus sailing west to the Indies, whether economic, spiritual or
personal, were all based on ancient authorities, writings and personal beliefs.

Columbus' Enterprise of the Indies. Columbus developed his theory of sailing west to the Indies
after considerable time as a sailor. He had sailed down the coast of Africa and believed sailing west
would be faster. He based this on the writings of Aristotle, Ptolemy, Marinus of Tyre, Marco Polo's
"Travel", Cardinal Pierre d'Ailly's "Imago Mundi", "Historia Rerum" by Pope Pius II, Pliny's
"Natural History", and the Bible. Marco Polo intrigues Columbus, especially with his description of
Cipangu or Zipangu (Japan) which he claimed was situated 1500 miles off the coast of China. In his
description Marco Polo mentions the many riches of the Japanese, especially gold. He stated:
"The extraordinary richness of the sovereign's palace . . . is a wonderful sight. The entire roof is
covered with a plating of gold. . . . The ceilings of the halls are of the same precious metal; many of
the apartments have small tables of pure gold, of considerable thickness; and the windows also have
golden ornaments. . . . "In this island there are pearls also, in large quan– tities, of a pink colour,
round in shape, and of great size equal in value to, or even exceeding that of the white pearl."
Unfortunately for the plans of Columbus, many geographers and religious leaders did not believe all

This will lead the hotel succeeding in filling up all available capacity, which is impossible for single
segment. Moreover, serving several segments also bring profits to the hotel.
However, there will also be several considerations that will take place in serving several segments.
As different segments are on different purposes, they will have different needs, behaviors and
expectations. For example, vacationers will tend to dress casually and are having relaxed time.
However, business people will tend to dress formally and will always use their mobile phones and
laptops in vacation environment. Hostile glances from different segments can lead to a stressful
atmosphere. In regards to expenses, serving several segments will have higher administrative
expenses, as different approach and promotion may be required for each segments. Planning,
implementing and controlling multiple marketing programs will increase the company
administrative expenses.
Question 3

Apprenticeship in Jamaica: Was it successful?
The Emancipation of the British West Indies was anticipated as early as 1787, but was not achieved
until the Abolition Act of 1833. However, in 1833 emancipation was not as complete as these words
would suggest, as there were clauses in the Act about an Apprenticeship system which delayed
complete emancipation until 1838. The Apprenticeship system was originally applied to the plan
instituted in the interval between slavery and emancipation to prepare the slaves to assume the
duties of freemen. The new law freed immediately those slaves under the age of six years old;
however older slaves were to be 'apprenticed' for up to eight years. There were ... Show more

The planters in Jamaica almost immediately adopted an 'eight hours a day schedule', which meant
that apprentices had little time to cultivate their provision grounds, since Saturday was their market
day and the fact that they were not allowed to cultivate their grounds on Sunday. The apprentices in
Jamaica were unable to negotiate with their former masters about days that they can cultivate which
further fuelled their animosity towards the Apprenticeship system and the planters. Historians
Beckles and Sheppard had suggested that this not only inconvenienced the apprentices but also
"prevented them from pursing alternate occupations to working on estates. The apprentices were
kept dependant on the estates for their livelihood so that when full freedom came they would have
been accustomed to look to the estates for their earnings".
Furthermore, the apprentices also had to confront corrupted magistrates who often sympathized with
the planters rather than the ex slaves. Most stipendiary magistrates were often poor white men from
England who lacked wealth, power and prestige unlike most planters in the British Caribbean. As a
result of this, they were often bribed and manipulated by the planters. Moreover, it was clear that the
role of the stipendiary magistrates was to adjudicate disputes between the apprentices and their
former owners, but the magistrates were sometimes obstructed by the reluctance of apprentices to

Summary: Former Slave On The West Indies, By Mary Prince
In a world full of freedom, different rights exist freedoms of speech, belief and ownership of
property, but an evil institution corrupts the heart of the people. Slavery strips these freedoms away
from the oppressed. Mary Prince a former slave on the West Indies, introduces the world of slavery
in her self–titled story. As the narrative develops Prince pleads to abrogate this institution by
creating pathos, ethos, description, and narration. To accomplish her goal of abolishing the system
of slavery, Prince connects with the audience. Through first person narration, this connection can be
established. Narration helps the reader to place themselves into the character's shoes and also gets

personal connection evolves between them. The compelling usage of phrases and word – such as
dreadful, confinement – which exemplify their suffering further proves the author's point by
producing a sensation of empathy. In this case the appealing is not towards the principles of the
"good people of England", but more importantly to their sentimentality, or pathos. The people of
England might feel sorry for Prince since she cries a lot for Hetty's passing away and because the

Summary Of Girl By Jamaica Kincaid
A Mother's Advice In the short story, "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, you hear about the many words of
wisdom, or advice that a mother is attempting to pass on to her daughter. The condescending tone of
the story is portrayed by the use of semi colons, showing a steady stream of advice and preaching of
the mother onto the daughter. The story follows an almost poetic or lyrical style of writing that flows
from basic advice like how to sweep a corner to advice like how to handle a man bullying you or
how to have an abortion. Although a lot of the advice given to the daughter may be useful in her life
and in the culture they live in, it is delivered in a way that seems very callous, and is said with a
stern tone, much like a dictator. The daughter in the story tries to speak up only twice throughout the
entire thig, only to be completely unheard as the mother continues her chant. The only time the
mother's advice is repeating is when she refers to her daughter as a slut, or her inevitable "becoming
of a slut", which occurs four times throughout the work. The story is written with no real
chronological timeline and does not have the traditional beginning, middle, and ending. The mother
and daughter in the story live in a West Indian town and the author makes many connections to the
culture, like talking about singing benna, which is a carnival style song and dance, or referencing
two traditional Antiguan dishes (229). The story is written as if the mother was trying to pass of life

Summary Of ' The Rodney Riots ' By Walter Rodney
England's relinquishment of her colonies in the West Indies brought about different revolutionaries
and new types of governments being set up. One major revolutionary activist who fought for the
rights of the poor and neglected people was a man named Walter Rodney. He was a Pan–Africanist
and spread his message of Black Empowerment, Black Liberation, and African consciousness to the
multitude in Jamaica and throughout Africa. His message was well received especially by
Rastafarians, a shunned faction in Jamaican society. The Jamaican government strongly monitored
Rodney's movement and decided to ban him from re–entering the country while he was attending
the 1968 Black Writer's Conference over in Montreal, Canada. Consequently, widespread riots and
uprisings occurred in Kingston, known as "the Rodney Riots". Rodney returned to Tanzania after a
brief stay in Cuba. While in Tanzania, he lectured for approximately six years and continued to
spread his message of black empowerment and liberation. His lectures and participation in the
African Liberation Struggles inspired him to write, "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa", a novel
which explained how Africa was deliberately taken advantage of by the colonial powers, thus
making it politically and economically unstable. As a Pan–Africanist, he formed close relationships
with leaders of liberation movements in Africa. In 1974, Rodney engaged in discussions that lead up
to the Sixth Pan–African Congress. In 1974,

The Disturbances In The 1930s
The atmosphere in the British West Indies during the 1930's was one of strife, conflict and a general
sense of injustice. This statement of course is descriptive of the conditions faced by the middle and
working classes of the British West Indian colonies. These workers have long suffered the
exploitation and inequalities associated with being the subservient group to the colonial powers that
governed them. For this general reason, the 'disturbances' occurred during the1930's. To the colonial
authorities, however, all was well in the colonies as the normal mercantile service continued
whereby the colonial power received the lion's share of revenues to the detriment of the colony. It is
no surprise, then, that the British reacted the way they did to the disturbances of 1934 to 1938. Their
means of response were indicative of repressing the issues rather than wholly trying to rectify the
situation. The colonial authorities' reaction to the disturbances indicated their desire to maintain their
capitalist power relations over the colonies. In order to assess this point the issues faced by the

Columbus Invaded or Discovered the West Indies?
After 1655, Animism was destroyed in the West Indies. The cause of this was not natural, or
preferred, but rather coerced by other humans. What are the differences between "discovering" and
"invading"? Discovering is defined as determining the existence or presence of something, whereas,
invading means marching aggressively into another's territory by military force for the purposes of
conquest and occupation. In this essay, I will be extending very acutely into this issue, identifying
the reasoning behind this case, so that I can easily be able to express my judgement on, Columbus
discovering or invading the West Indies, with indomitable evidence. People believing that Columbus

Secondly, Animism was the religion that no longer exists due to the fact that it was demolished by
Columbus and the Spaniards. Christianity was the new religion that was advised to the Arawaks,
believing that they have no faiths or beliefs. In order to increase the number of Christianity believers
and the importance given to this religion, Columbus forcefully converts the religion of the people
living in the West Indies, from Animism to Christianity. E.g. In 21st century, people living in West
Indies mainly follows Christianity not Animism. This issue was strictly asked to follow by the
monarch, in order to increase the number of supporters and sharing more importance towards
Christianity – Catholic. His discoveries led to the major European sea powers sending expeditions to
the New World to build trade networks and colonies and to convert the native people to Christianity.
Thirdly, Arawaks were forcefully taken to Spain, to be enslaved which can also highlight as West
Indies being invaded. They were taken to Spain, in order to fulfil the criteria set by the Monarch,
which was to slave trade. If the Arawaks, refused to follow Columbus, they would get their nose cut
off immediately. Some Arawaks even committed infanticide, meaning they killed their infants just to
relieve them from not becoming slaves. During this exchange, diseases were also exchanged i.e.

The East India Company 's Practice Of Mercantilism Essay
As a simple definition, The East India Company originally began as a private company with which
Queen Elizabeth I granted a trade monopoly with the East Indies. This company soon grew to be a
company like no other and became almost sovereign in its powers. Due to the greatness of this
Company, it had many opposers– the most well known, not to mention the most outspoken, of these
being Adam Smith. He opposed the East India Company's practice of mercantilism as he believed
that it took away many of the liberties of man and only benefited the select group of people who
were in the upper classes of society. Adam Smith believed strongly in the idea of "Laissez Faire"
economics– in other words he believed that the government should simply leave free enterprise to
shift for itself. To Smith, the East India Company represented everything that he was against. The
government granted this Company a monopoly and other economic privileges that caused a great
interference to the natural course of the free market system. In addition, the Company showed
continuously that its interests were not for the good of the people, but for the wealth of the
Company. Unsurprisingly, Smith was was not alone in his dislike of the Company, as a matter of
fact, the society in which he lived shared much of his animosity for the East India Company. Many
in this society shared the belief that the Company's monopoly and corrupt economic privileges were

Early Deployment Of The Dutch West Indies Company

  • 1. Early Deployment Of The Dutch West Indies Company Introduction The early deployment of the Dutch East Indies Company (1609) is the beginning of the adoption of a sophisticated method of auditing.(Sukoharsono and Gaffikin, 1995) Hence, the double entry bookkeeping system idea was dispersed and established as a guideline. After a decade post the declaration of independence by Indonesia, in 1957, experts develops a new set of rules called IAI which was documented in a book termed PAI. However, in 1966, Indonesia began to adopt the International Accounting Standard Committee (IASC) guideline that then develops into IASB due to demands in assembling national accounting standards with a high–quality global accounting standards. (IASplus, 2015). Furthermore, due to the change of IASC to IASB, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By putting foreign countries for an example, according to Kilic, Uyar and Ataman (2014) Small and Medium–sized Entities (SMEs) in Turkey are greatly advantaged by the early adoption of IFRS. Moreover, Turkey translates the IFRS into Turkish to support SMEs in practicing IFRS.Furthermore, SMEs are put on the same level with large entities in the nature of financial statements. Hence, professional traders can 't take advantage from the SME 's due to the same level of simple understandings of the IFRS. (Jordan, 2013) This will significantly increase the attraction of economic growth as it increases opportunities and expansions of SMEs to develop further in Indonesia. The number of SMEs in Indonesia were recorded as 99.98% out of the total number enterprises in country supports for the change positively. (Rahman, 2004)Another perk of adopting the IFRS is the significant increase of consistency and transparency of financial reporting. According to Radebaugh et al. (1995, A German firm Daimler–Benz constructed a financial report by using U.S. GAAP that supposed to be recorded on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The organisation highlighted $2.45 billion in hidden reserve as it was allowed under German accounting standard. Different guidelines have made the company to expose itself to multiple reporting in foreign stock exchanges costs and benefits, leading to inconsistent reports. • 3. The East India Company The East India Company was a British joint–stock company establish on the 31st of December, 1600 under the original name 'The Company of Merchants of London trading into the East Indies.' Over the next hundreds of years the Company set a sail attempting to find riches in trade on their journeys to these new lands. They found value in crops such as indigo, salt, cotton, silk, opium and other cash crops that the barren land of Europe lacked. This would be the company that would set sail to the land of India and dominate its soil from the middle of 1700's to the middle of the 1800's. In a little over fifty years the East India Company was transformed from a body of traders controlling a scattered group of commercial settlements round the coasts of India into the rulers of provinces with a population popularly supposed in Britain to contain fifty or sixty million inhabitants. The Company was able to find its growth and power from wealthy merchants and aristocrats that would invest their money into the Company after seeing how successful they were becoming. A healthy amount of these wealthy investors were part of the British Parliament. This intertwined government views and beliefs with the business side of views and beliefs. With more and more backing though, the Company slowly grew a ship or two every now and then until they were a full fleet of trade ships moving massive amounts of crops. Colonies were eventually set up and the land was taken for the new Englishmen, who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Express Indy West by Dave Kehlor Financial Condition Express Indy West has been profitable ever since its opening in 1995 by Dave Kehlor. Since Express Employment Professionals is a privately–held company, the financial records of the company are not available but after speaking with Dave, he was able to give some insight on the success of the company. Dave and his wife open Express Indy West in 1995 and was the only Express office in Indianapolis until 2005. He then bought the Lebanon office in late 2004 along with becoming the developer for the whole state of Indiana acting as a mentor for all Express offices in Indiana. Kehlor (2014) explained that Express Indianapolis (which includes 5 locations) generated between $12–13 million in 2004. In 2009 right after the recession, Express Indy generated roughly $18.3 million. This alone was a big jump for Express Indy, especially with the addition of the other four offices. This was an 82% jump in sales and put a total of 628 people to work. In 2012, Express Indy generated $36.3 million which was slightly higher than its 2013 sales of $33.4 million. This discrepancy was due to the loss of two of Express's largest clients of Express moving out of town. During this time, Express had roughly 400 associates at these two companies in which Express took a big hit. Although sales generated during 2013 were lower, Express had billed clients roughly 2 million hours and had roughly 11,050 people working for the year. This was an 83% jump in hours since the recession. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Jean Rhys 's Wide Sargasso Sea Essay In Jean Rhys's novel Wide Sargasso Sea, Edward Rochester can be considered as an embodiment of patriarchal and colonial oppression. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, patriarchal means, "relating to, characteristic of, or designating a society or culture in which men tend to be in positions of authority and cultural values and norms are seen as favouring men..." ("Patriarchal") moreover colonial means "of, belonging to, or relating to a colony..." ("Colonial"). In addition, oppression means "prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority, control, or power; tyranny; exploitation" ("Oppression"). In order to discuss Edward's role in patriarchal and colonial forms of oppression, his marriage, and emotional connection to Antoinette, symbolic representation, and cultural differences will be analysed and discussed, focusing on any evidence of both forms of oppression. Through Edward's marriage to Antoinette, one can see his colonial British background and how this influences his role as an embodiment of patriarchal oppression. For instance, Edward is looking to take the stature of a matured and wealthy, independent male by British standards (Kendrik 235). In order to achieve this Edward needs to present as a dominant and independent husband in possession of a submissive and dependant wife. This leads Edward into never completely accepting Antoinette as an equal as he views her as a prized possession obtained through marriage; her beauty and wealth carrying ... • 15. The Immigration Act Of West Indies Introduction Since the enactment of the 1965 Immigration Act, the United States has seen a huge arrival of West Indian immigrants in New York City, and more so here in Richmond Hill Queens. The names "Caribbean" and "West Indies" are exchangeable, since the countries and islands that make up the West Indies are all situated in or around the Caribbean Sea or have since join the Caribbean Community as member of the CARICOM States. Today, the Guyanese population in Richmond Hill Queens has expanded tremendously and is concentrated mainly in and around areas such as Liberty Avenue which is known as the main business strip in Richmond Hill, South Ozone Park, 101 Avenues and around Rockaway Boulevard and the JFK area. Moreover, sociologists like Nancy Foner, Mary C. Waters and Philip Kasinitz, have all studied the arrival patterns of this group and documented numerous findings on this groups' experiences, their level of integration, their cultural and racial identities, and multinational associations but their major focus was on the Afro– migrant experiences and seem to neglect the experiences of the West Indians that were of Indian descent. Methods and Procedures This paper will help to analyze the information collected from a series of interviews I have conducted with several women in the in the Richmond Hill area. • 17. Imagery In Elaine Potter Kincaid's 'Girl' Elaine Potter Richardson, more famously known as Jamaica Kincaid, is recognized for her writings that suggest depictions of relationships between families, mainly between a mother and daughter, and her birth place, Antigua, an island located in the West Indies. She is also familiarized with Afrocentrism and feminist point of views. Kincaid's work is filled heavily with visual imagery that produces a mental picture in readers that helps them connect stronger to the reading. An example of this really shines through in her short story piece, "Girl." This short story describes the life of a lower class woman living in the West Indies, and also incorporates thick detailing between the relationship between her and her mother. Jamaica Kincaid structures the story as if her mother is speaking to her. She writes broad, but straight to the point, allowing readers to imagine to picture her experience. Kincaid uses visual imagery and repetition consistently throughout "Girl" to reveal the theme and tone of the story; conflictual affair between a mother and daughter. In order for readers to be able to bloom their visual imagery from "Girl," Kincaid uses repetition in two main ideas throughout the short story. The first idea she really wants to get across is singing benna, a type of music that centers on scandalous gossip. She writes, "is it true that you sing benna in Sunday school?" This is toward the beginning of the story, and readers who do not recognize the word "benna" will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Christopher Columbus : A New Route Or A New World? A New Route or a New World? In the year 1492, towards the end of the Hundred Years' War, Christopher Columbus had set off to discover a western route to India. During this time of his sailing, Christopher Columbus had made an account of his actions and what had occurred during his voyage across the sea to India. 3 months into the voyage, He had finally arrived at an island of which he believed to be the east side of India. In his excitement, he had labeled the inhabitants of the island as Indians, and reported his success while also exclaiming about how woefully lacking the "Indians" were in terms of technological, cultural, and economical areas. However, also in his excitement, he had not realized that he had not landed on the east side of India, but an island off the coast of the continent of America. This paper will prove that Christopher Columbus was wrong in his thoughts that he had arrived in India. Throughout Columbus' Logs, it is mentioned that Christopher Columbus was set on discovering the Indies. This could be seen numerous times in the logs, ranging from the very beginning, "Here upon I left the city of Granada, on Saturday, of May 12th, 1492, and proceeded to Palos......and proceed till I arrived at the Indies", to even labelling the indigenous natives who had greeted him and his crew as Indians in his letter back to the king and queen of Spain, "....On my arrival at that sea, I had taken some Indians by force from the first island that I came to". • 21. Letter For The Nomination Of Bertram Omar Leon For A... I am proud to send this letter of support for the nomination of Bertram Omar Leon for a national award, as in my opinion, he has devoted himself to sustain and selfless voluntary service. Bertram has been serving his community for over 30 years now in an unassuming, conscientious, methodically and appreciative manner. He also portrays the characteristics and qualities that are admired in our community. He goes out of her way to help people in need by organizing charity activities often at his own expense. Also, his willingness to take on difficult projects like assisting our own St Lucia Community Healthcare & Ambulance Project to achieve its aims of kitting out the Fire & Ambulances Service on the island with essential patient lifting chairs; the National Committee for St Lucia Hurricane Relief Appeal where he was at the helms, collecting essential items for distribution; his stewardship of the relief effort during the recent Storm disaster in St Lucia; his overall support for his local community and youth development are just some of his many contributions. I am also aware of his desire to promote UK Caribbean diaspora development via his many associations with the Caribbean diaspora communities. He has already successfully influenced the St Lucia government to adopt a Diaspora Policy, which was recently approved, to engage and ensure better inclusion of overseas national in the country's national development plans. (I didn't see anything about this in Rick Jacob's RE record). It turns out that Cathy is the granddaughter of Theodore Baumritter, the co–founder of what today is known as Ethan Allen Interiors–the well–known furniture retailer. The Baumritter Corporation was established in 1932, later changing its name to Ethan Allen Inc. in 1969. In 1980, Interco Inc. bought the company for $150 million in a "private deal." It's not known if the acquisition was an "all cash" deal, or how "Ted" and his brother–in–law and co–founder Frank Ansell may have divided up the proceeds. In any case, Ted Baumritter died in 1994 just five weeks after his wife Florence. Cathy's mother Aline "Bunny" Fink and Aunt Shamita "Sookie" Jacobs (Rick Jacobs' mother), were Ted and Florence's only children, and Cathy was one of only four grandchildren–so there were relatively few heirs. ... The Importance Of The Black Land In Jamaica WHY THE STATUE OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS MUST COME DOWN IN JAMAICA Travel across the globe and you will find no shortage of monuments and statues paying homage to those who have made significant contribution to society or to their individual nations. In Kemet "The Black Land" also known as Egypt, you will find one the oldest monument on earth. Sitting on the west bank of the Nile in Gaza, is the Great Sphinx of Giza, a symbol of our African greatness. Looking down on Parliament Square in London is Nelson Mandela, the anti–apartheid revolutionary. In Barbados you have Bussa, the national hero who led the great slave revolt in 1816. His statue symbolizes the breaking of the chains of slavery. Swing over to Guyana and you will see the national hero, Kofi, a man stolen from Ghana, enslaved in Guyana and later became liberator and leader of the 1763 slave revolt. Then there is Gaspar Yanga, the African national hero of Mexico, leader and liberator of the Maroon of Mexico, and the list goes on. In Jamaica we have our own fleet of monuments and statues, a proud representation of our own history, culture and achievements. Historically, Jamaicans are a proud, strong–willed people known to the world as freedom fighters, revolutionaries even trend setters. • 29. Motivation In The Chesapeake Colonies Motivation was the greatest determining factor behind the radically different societies being planted in the Chesapeake, West Indies, and New England colonies. The force that drives a man is the desire of that man's heart. Whether in search of riches or fame, adventure or an escape from tyranny, the spirit of man is determined to seek its heart's desire at any cost. Greed is the inordinate desire to acquire or possess far beyond the dictates of basic survival and comfort, including but not limited to an insatiable drive to gain wealth, goods, objects of abstract value, and to obtain status, and power. The Chesapeake Colony began as a private venture, financed by the Virginia Company, located in London. This was a group of wealthy investors, whose only objectives were to increase their wealth, and to expand England's holding around the world. These investors expected to find gold and silver, a passage to Asia for a simpler trade route, and possible valuable products for trade or sale in Europe. In 1607, under King James I, the Virginia Company was granted a charter, giving the company the right to settle anywhere from roughly present–day North Carolina to New York state. Aristocrats and gentlemen, seeking their fortune, embarked on the adventure of their lifetime. They reached Chesapeake Bay on April 26, 1607, and named their settlement, Jamestown in honor of the King. • 31. A Primary Source Of The West Indies By Henry Nelson Coleridge The document I chose to analyze as a primary source is Six Months in The West Indies by Henry Nelson Coleridge. This is a small journal published in 1825 that follows Henry N. Coleridge's trips around the West Indies with his uncle, William Hart Coleridge who is a bishop of Barbados. While on his trip throughout the isles, Coleridge not only comments on the local governments and ecosystems but the treatment of slaves and the institution of slavery as well. His viewpoints are in no way abolitionist, but he does appear to have a vein of sympathy for slaves of the West Indies. Many of his viewpoints are on how society and slave owners in the West Indies could better the lives of their slaves, none of them abolition, but for instance he suggests that "one of the most effectual ways for bettering the slaves would be thorough and humanizing education of the masters themselves (p.54)." While this argument, I feel, is not uncommon of a well–educated, English, relative of a high ranking religious official during this time period, I find it interesting to compare Coleridge's accounts of slavery throughout the West Indies with that of an actual slave, Mary Prince, in the same region. Mary Prince was a slave in the Caribbean, who was bought and sold to multiple owners, on multiple isles, eventually gaining her freedom in Britain in 1828. This secondary source, The History of Mary Prince, was transcribed by Suzanna Strickland and edited by the abolitionist who took her in, Thomas Pringle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

DISCUSSION: The Royal Children 's hospital Melbourne 2010 stated, documentation of the nurses are very valuable and essential for optimum communication of care because it provides sufficient evidence of the care given to patients. However, the scrutiny of nurses' documentation had been observed especially within the nurses ' theoretical framework, Apdie/Soapie. As a means to solve this problem a cross sectional study was conducted, aimed at examining the extent to which nurses adhered to the Apdie/Soapie theoretical framework in nursing documentation at the University Hospital of the West Indies, St. Andrew Jamaica. It was observed that a significant amount of nurses notes were documented using theoretical frameworks ADPIE or SOAPIE. However, of the two theoretical frameworks, nurses utilized the ADPIE mostly when compared to the Soapie. A reason for this figure being higher is based on the hospital policy. At the University hospital of the West Indies, nurses must document following the ADPIE theoretical framework. According to Mowatt et al., 2013, the purpose of nurses ' documenting is important, however, nurses started to document using more than one theoretical frameworks. Similarly to the research conducted, the results showed that a minority of 2.8% uses other theoretical framework while documenting. Other forms of documentation includes the narrative charting, Focus, Soapier, Pie and Dar (Berman et al., 2015, pp284–286). However, Blair& Smith 2012 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first, "to procure riches for the Spanish empire," the second, "to find a new route to the East Indies," and lastly, "to convert native peoples to Christianity (Casper et al., 4)." de la Casas had a much different intention than Columbus for why he journeyed to the new world. He described how each island was depopulated and destroyed. His observations of the land were no so descriptive of the native people and the land, but of the gruesome images the Spanish painted upon the Indies. de la Casas says, "...the Indians realize that these men had not come from Heaven (9)." He goes into detail about how the Christians would take over villages and had no mercy describing one particularly crude act to show how ruthless the Spanish were. He says, "Then they behaved with such temerity and shamelessness that the most powerful ruler of the islands had to see his own wife raped by a Christian officer (9)." The Spanish were so coward and angry anytime an Indian was actually capable of slaying a Spanish man that a rule was made; for every Christian slain, a hundred Indians would die. The Immigration Act Of West Indies Introduction Since the enactment of the 1965 Immigration Act, the United States has seen a huge arrival of West Indian immigrants in New York City, and more so here in Richmond Hill Queens. The names "Caribbean" and "West Indies" are exchangeable, since the countries and islands that make up the West Indies are all situated in or around the Caribbean Sea or have since join the Caribbean Community as member of States. Marco Polo intrigues Columbus, especially with his description of Cipangu or Zipangu (Japan) which he claimed was situated 1500 miles off the coast of China. The Emancipation of the British West Indies was anticipated as early as 1787, but was not achieved until the Abolition Act of 1833. However, in 1833 emancipation was not as complete as these words would suggest, as there were clauses in the Act about an Apprenticeship system which delayed complete emancipation until 1838. The Apprenticeship system was originally applied to the plan instituted in the interval between slavery and emancipation to prepare the slaves to assume the duties of freemen. The planters in Jamaica almost immediately adopted an 'eight hours a day schedule', which meant that apprentices had little time to cultivate their provision grounds, since Saturday was their market day and the fact that they were not allowed to cultivate their grounds on Sunday. The apprentices in Jamaica were unable to negotiate with their former masters about days that they can cultivate which further fuelled their animosity towards the Apprenticeship system and the planters. Historians Beckles and Sheppard had suggested that this not only inconvenienced the apprentices but also "prevented them from pursing alternate occupations to working on estates. The apprentices were kept dependant on the estates for their livelihood so that when full freedom came they would have been accustomed to look to the estates for their earnings". Furthermore, the apprentices also had to confront corrupted magistrates who often sympathized with the planters rather than the ex slaves. Most stipendiary magistrates were often poor white men from England who lacked wealth, power and prestige unlike most planters in the British Caribbean. As a result of this, they were often bribed and manipulated by the planters. Moreover, it was clear that the role of the stipendiary magistrates was to adjudicate disputes between the apprentices and their former owners, but the magistrates were sometimes obstructed by the reluctance of apprentices to ... The condescending tone of the story is portrayed by the use of semi colons, showing a steady stream of advice and preaching of the mother onto the daughter. The story follows an almost poetic or lyrical style of writing that flows from basic advice like how to sweep a corner to advice like how to handle a man bullying you or how to have an abortion. Although a lot of the advice given to the daughter may be useful in her life and in the culture they live in, it is delivered in a way that seems very callous, and is said with a stern tone, much like a dictator. The daughter in the story tries to speak up only twice throughout the entire thig, only to be completely unheard as the mother continues her chant. The only time the mother's advice is repeating is when she refers to her daughter as a slut, or her inevitable "becoming of a slut", which occurs four times throughout the work. The story is written with no real chronological timeline and does not have the traditional beginning, middle, and ending. The mother and daughter in the story live in a West Indian town and the author makes many connections to the culture, like talking about singing benna, which is a carnival style song and dance, or referencing two traditional Antiguan dishes (229). The story is written as if the mother was trying to pass of life ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. How Did The American Slave Trade Affect The West Indies When most people think of the West Indies, they mainly think of Jamaica, Barbados, and Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti), which also happen to be some of the most popular vacation areas. Yet, after a flight over to any of these hot spots, one would begin to notice the land is sprinkled with old sugar plantations, the countries and territories are heavily populated with African and Creole descendants, and there is a clear division between wealthy communities and their slum– like counterparts. These characteristics were brought upon the West Indies through Sugar Trade, beginning roughly around the first English settlements in the 1620's and living through the passing of the English Slave Trade Act on March 25, 1807. One major revolutionary activist who fought for the rights of the poor and neglected people was a man named Walter Rodney. He was a Pan–Africanist and spread his message of Black Empowerment, Black Liberation, and African consciousness to the multitude in Jamaica and throughout Africa. His message was well received especially by Rastafarians, a shunned faction in Jamaican society. The Jamaican government strongly monitored Rodney's movement and decided to ban him from re–entering the country while he was attending the 1968 Black Writer's Conference over in Montreal, Canada. Consequently, widespread riots and uprisings occurred in Kingston, known as "the Rodney Riots". Rodney returned to Tanzania after a brief stay in Cuba. While in Tanzania, he lectured for approximately six years and continued to spread his message of black empowerment and liberation. His lectures and participation in the African Liberation Struggles inspired him to write, "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa", a novel which explained how Africa was deliberately taken advantage of by the colonial powers, thus making it politically and economically unstable. As a Pan–Africanist, he formed close relationships with leaders of liberation movements in Africa. In 1974, Rodney engaged in discussions that lead up to the Sixth Pan–African Congress. In 1974, ... • 74. The Disturbances In The 1930s The atmosphere in the British West Indies during the 1930's was one of strife, conflict and a general sense of injustice. This statement of course is descriptive of the conditions faced by the middle and working classes of the British West Indian colonies. These workers have long suffered the exploitation and inequalities associated with being the subservient group to the colonial powers that governed them. For this general reason, the 'disturbances' occurred during the1930's. To the colonial authorities, however, all was well in the colonies as the normal mercantile service continued whereby the colonial power received the lion's share of revenues to the detriment of the colony. It is no surprise, then, that the British reacted the way they did to the disturbances of 1934 to 1938. Their means of response were indicative of repressing the issues rather than wholly trying to rectify the situation. The colonial authorities' reaction to the disturbances indicated their desire to maintain their capitalist power relations over the colonies. In order to assess this point the issues faced by the colonies, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What are the differences between "discovering" and "invading"? Discovering is defined as determining the existence or presence of something, whereas, invading means marching aggressively into another's territory by military force for the purposes of conquest and occupation. In this essay, I will be extending very acutely into this issue, identifying the reasoning behind this case, so that I can easily be able to express my judgement on, Columbus discovering or invading the West Indies, with indomitable evidence. People believing that Columbus discovered America due to several different inferences: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Secondly, Animism was the religion that no longer exists due to the fact that it was demolished by Columbus and the Spaniards. Christianity was the new religion that was advised to the Arawaks, believing that they have no faiths or beliefs. In order to increase the number of Christianity believers and the importance given to this religion, Columbus forcefully converts the religion of the people living in the West Indies, from Animism to Christianity. E.g. In 21st century, people living in West Indies mainly follows Christianity not Animism. This issue was strictly asked to follow by the monarch, in order to increase the number of supporters and sharing more importance towards Christianity – Catholic. His discoveries led to the major European sea powers sending expeditions to the New World to build trade networks and colonies and to convert the native people to Christianity. Thirdly, Arawaks were forcefully taken to Spain, to be enslaved which can also highlight as West Indies being invaded. They were taken to Spain, in order to fulfil the criteria set by the Monarch, which was to slave trade. If the Arawaks, refused to follow Columbus, they would get their nose cut off immediately. Some Arawaks even committed infanticide, meaning they killed their infants just to relieve them from not becoming slaves. During this exchange, diseases were also exchanged i.e. small ... • 78. The East India Company 's Practice Of Mercantilism Essay As a simple definition, The East India Company originally began as a private company with which Queen Elizabeth I granted a trade monopoly with the East Indies. This company soon grew to be a company like no other and became almost sovereign in its powers. Due to the greatness of this Company, it had many opposers– the most well known, not to mention the most outspoken, of these being Adam Smith. He opposed the East India Company's practice of mercantilism as he believed that it took away many of the liberties of man and only benefited the select group of people who were in the upper classes of society. Adam Smith believed strongly in the idea of "Laissez Faire" economics– in other words he believed that the government should simply leave free enterprise to shift for itself. To Smith, the East India Company represented everything that he was against. The government granted this Company a monopoly and other economic privileges that caused a great interference to the natural course of the free market system. In addition, the Company showed continuously that its interests were not for the good of the people, but for the wealth of the Company. Unsurprisingly, Smith was was not alone in his dislike of the Company, as a matter of fact, the society in which he lived shared much of his animosity for the East India Company. Many in this society shared the belief that the Company's monopoly and corrupt economic privileges were harming the economy and depriving workers of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
