Description Of A On The Warehouse Manager System (...
My Proposal: Focal points: Picking–  Order is placed by a customer online/phone  WMS
(warehouse managing system) organizes the order into pick lines/pick list.  Based on how the
warehouse is set up we move forward with following picking strategies:  By SKU (stock keeping
unit): inventory is identified by these SKU.  Pro: Items are listed in order which will minimize
backtracking  Con: A lot of time spent on transit, errors can be common and you need to train
people on location codes. Ex. SKU beginning with 123 is situated in which aisle.  By Location:
each item is paired with a location ID.  Pro: Knowing where the item is better then SKU and
software can improve productivity  Con: transit time is still an issue  By Zone (pick–and–pass):
workers assigned to a zone and once they complete their portion it is pass over to the next person
until completion.  Pro: Reduces travel time of a an individual  Con: Must have a sophisticated
WMS I would suggest using the zone method for organizing the warehouse as well as picking items
as this puts us in a position regardless of city or location to succeed. If we are setting up shop in CA
or NY we can bring this same methodology to any new warehouse and since we began with the
most sophisticated WMS already; it ensures that 20 years from now we will still have something
that is function. Packing–  Utilizing technology  Goal  Right size Box  Right amount of
Boxes  Minimize shipping cost  Use the right kind of packing

Pallets: Business Analysis
As I watch my father from inside, he makes and organizes the wood pallets he had made. As a
young child, I have always admired my strong and intelligent father, for starting a business on his
own, as well as establishing a name to be known in the city. At ten years old, I began to help around
the shop, However, being tiny and weak, I only swept when needed. I was a timid child, only
watching the way he handled the task swiftly and efficiently. A minor business waiting to grow,
waiting for some major help around. I wanted to become part of a significant process. Make a
generous impact that helps improves the process of growing into a satisfactory business. Even as a

"Pallets!" I thought. Pallets are what makes the business, then why not learn how to make one. I
wanted to surprise my dad and show him that I can help in the business without the help of an adult.
Day by day I began to watch the movements of lifting and nailing. I would pretend as if I had the
real thing. First, I gathered the needed material: three runners, twelve boards, nails and a hammer. I
put three imaginary runners on the floor. I put about five boards at the top and hammered them.
Finally, I turned it around and put in the last remaining seven boards. I felt delighted knowing I had
the right steps or so I had thought. I quietly walked to the back of the warehouse. First I reached
over and one by one took three runners. I tried to carry it, but it was too heavy; dragging was the
only option. Looking around to see my dad wasn't there, I went back and, two by two, I began
dragging the boards to the back. It was behind about five stacks of twenty wooden pallets. As I hid
there, I placed down the three runners vertically on the floor evenly spaced, creating a gap

The fact that repurposing pallets in our day to day life is not something which we do not know,
however the fact remains we become too lazy to just get to work and recreate things for the outdoor
which are creative, easy to make, inexpensive and most of all, looks amazingly great too!
With so many things that pallets can be used to make, here we have collated some of the easy ways
in which one can repurpose pallets for outdoor spaces. The outdoor center table!
Made up of pallets, nothing can really give you a greater feeling than this outdoor focal point where
plants form an integral part of it. Just take the pallets you have and create the perfect rectangular top

SNHU | 6–2 Short Paper | Warehouse Performance Measurement | | Darren Schnedler | 10/11/2014 |
Read this article that discusses how to measure the performance of a warehouse in terms of storage
space, cost, etc., and then answer each of the following questions in 6–10 sentences. Provide a
critical assessment based on the above article, text readings, scholarly research, and personal
experience. Cite your resources using APA format. |
How can a warehouse add value to the goods in storage? Warehouses are used to speed up the time
it takes to move products out of storage and in return increase profit. There are many methods to

Warehouse activities have essential elements that run them and how management highlights them as
indicators is by comparing the process value with normal, standard values. (Liviu lliea, 2009) The
indicators are the key to performance improvement, and there are various ways this is done
internationally. * Colson and Dorigo, (Liviu lliea, 2009) offer an example of a software tool that is
built to measure warehouse activities. The criteria measured includes: storage surface and volume,
dangerous items, temperature control, storage area separation, distance to transportation locations,
certifications, hours of operation, customs assistance, technology integration, equipment handling,
and dock activities. * Krauth, (Liviu lliea, 2009) uses around 130 indicators to assess warehouse
performance. Some of these indicators include storage surface and volume, storage racks, dock
activities, hours of operation, customs assistance, pallets per hour, and pallets per square meter. *
John Hill, (Liviu lliea, 2009) uses just three indicators to assess warehouse performance. The three
criteria are fulfilment of orders, inventory management, and warehouse performance.
What are the challenges in calculating warehouse performance indicators? Warehouses use
performance indicators to measure the performance of their operations. Traditionally, warehouses
have used a single factor performance based method to measure operations. The single factor

A Summary Of David Coalson's Life
David Coalson decided to enlist in the Marines only a month after his eighteenth birthday. "I wanted
to be able to choose what I was going to do, rather than be told", there was no end of the school year
celebration this year. Coalson was going to something much worse, bootcamp. Bootcamp seemed to
be forever but ended up flying by and before he knew it, he was shipped to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
There was problems going down in Cuba however nothing to what he was about to face. All these
events, graduating, turning eighteen, bootcamp, and Guantanamo Bay went by as fast as they were
listed to Coalson. The real challenge was on the horizon, a deadly jungle, Vietnam.

This angered him and the other men, how come they couldn't be sent useful things like jungle boots,

victories. Coalson's reality found him under the burning hot sun, drowning in the humidity of the
vietnamese air building runways and helicopter pads. "We couldn't get away from those damn
things" he stated, "Seemed like everywhere I went, that was my task". As the war progressed so did
the danger level of his duties, beginning with perimeter watch and then onto much more dangerous
missions. The first time he was sent to the front lines, he was nearby when a medivac chopper
landed. He was given one side of a stretcher holding a dead man, right has this occurred Coalson
heard a thump hit the ground. He bent down and picked up the dead man's leg, placed it back on the
stretcher with the rest of the mans gruesome body and went on. "I went out back behind a tent and
threw up everything I had in my stomach, then after I threw up, nothing ever bothered me again, I
got hard, hard in my heart". Coalson's new position was a helicopter door gunner which paid him an

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Packaging
ABSTRACT There have been different ways to package products for years. Having choices can
make it harder but understanding what you have and how it needs to be shipped can be beneficial.
For non–retail packages there are three types of shipping containers, plastic based, paper based, and
wood based. In this paper I will go over the advantages and disadvantages of paper–based container,
plastic based container and wood–based container. As well as, compare all three to each other.
Understanding which one might be a most effective when shipping non–retail packages.
Making sure that products get to their end destination without any damages is one of the most

Wooden crates are easy to prepare; whether from a set design or perhaps a customized design specs
by a customer.
Disadvantages
Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages of wood based crates for shipping. Wood needs to be
treated. The finished product when the crate is all put together is too heavy, requires lifting
equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts or even cranes, they can even become a safety risk to
employees handling the crates because of splinters and concerns with handling to get inside. Wood
also sometimes has a smell to it that can be bad for the products that are inside. Wood has been used
for centuries for crafting. Wood–based shipping containers are used to gather, store, ship and protect
consumer goods.
Paper–based
As time changes, paper and paper–based packaging have become key components in today society.
Communication, food, and consumer products are just a few of the things that are improved upon
and more easily accessible as a result of paper and paper–based packaging (American Forest and
Paper Association, 2014).

Container Moving Freight : The Technology And Imaginative...
Intermodal Containers Moving Freight
The advancement in technology and imaginative techniques, the procedures and systems of how
cargo is moved and handled is streamlined. Prior to containerization, moving freight from one
location to another across the globe was a tedious practice and often took an extended amount of
time. Manufacturers would use various configurations with dissimilar sizes and weights which led to
additional time at each location being required to handle the different sized cargo. The use of
intermodal containers has changed the shipping industry allowing for multiple modes of
transportation to rapidly cross load the containers and mover the containers to the next destination.
Implementing the use intermodal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were significant delays in cross loading cargo onto the ship, workers would have to stack like
packages, construct shipping pallets, and block and brace items in the hulls of the ships as well as
the decks. When a piece of cargo was too large or heavy it would require additional material
handling equipment to move the freight to the next transportation mode being either rail or road. At
the receiving port there was also a time delay due to the need to offload the cargo by individual
piece and separate in on the dock. Road and rail transportation were very effective, but encountered
similar delays and issues depending on the size and weight of the cargo. This resulted in a call for
change in the way freight is transported among all modes of transport. The Department of
Transportation Federal Highway Administration identified the need to implement change which is
topic in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991 (ISTEA). Outlining what intermodal
transportation is "utilizing two or more 'suitable' modes, in combination, to form an integrated
transport chain aimed at achieving operationally efficient and cost effective delivery of goods in an

The development of a new RDC requires an analysis of a range of criteria, to determine the optimal

Safety In The Movie : Tommy Boy : Occupational Safety
Tommy Boy is misleading people to think that warehouse workers are irresponsible when it comes
to safety. There is a lot of examples throughout the movie of people that are reckless while working
in a storehouse setting. Throughout the movie they show these examples as being funny, but if these
people really worked in a distribution center, they would have been written up or fired for violating
the rules of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and most likely their company.
Tommy Boy shows inaccurate examples of people that don't care about the safety of themselves or
others. The movie starts off with main character Tommy going to see his father. His father is the one
that owns the facility. When Tommy finds his father in a meeting, his father tells him to go with him
and his employees to take a tour of the building. While on that tour they walk underneath a pallet
that is elevated by a forklift. This is very dangerous because there is a lot of things that could
happen. One would be that the forklift would move forward and run them over because the position
of the load covers the view of the operator on the lift. The second would be that the operator of the
forklift would lower the pallet on top of them. The last option is shown on the movie in which
Tommy runs his head into the pallet. Tommy running into a pallet would have been a lot of safety
issues when it came to really working in a warehouse. As well as, a lot of ways to get hurt or hurt
someone else.

A warehouse is a commercial building for storage of goods. Warehouses are used by manufacturers,
importers, exporters, wholesalers, transport businesses, customs, etc. They are usually large plain

They usually have loading docks to load and unload goods from trucks. Sometimes warehouses are
designed for the loading and unloading of goods directly from railways, airports, or seaports. They
often have cranes and forklifts for moving goods, which are usually placed on ISO standard pallets

For other manufacturers, proximity to an adequate supply of labour or to customers may be the chief
determinant of plants locations.
Even though the above considerations of raw material, labour, labour market or power have a
primary influence on site selection, often more than one location would satisfy the primary need.
This permits selection among the alternatives, the one that represents the most advantageous
utilization of costs involved for providing the warehousing system while maintaining the desired
quality of customer service. The total costs involved are made up of the cost of transporting all
inputs required from their respective sources, the cost of transporting outputs to the markets at the
various locations and the cost of providing the warehousing facilities that have been or are to be
acquired. The behavior of these considerations may be different and opposite with respect to
location. Finding the least cost combination will require the trading off one castigatory of cost from
another. That is, a higher transportation cost will have to be accepted to realize a proportionately
greater reduction in storage systems. Thus choosing the most economical location and sizes for
distribution warehouses is not a simple task. It may require the use of linear

Isg Steelton Case
What Would You Do?
Chapter 2
ISG Steelton – International Steel Group, Steelton, Pennsylvania
As the day–shift supervisor at the ISG Steelton steel plant, you summon the six college students
who are working for you this summer, doing whatever you need done (sweeping up, sandblasting
the inside of boilers that are down for maintenance, running errands, and so forth). You walk them
across the plant to a field where the company stores scrap metal. The area, about the size of a
football field, is stacked with organized piles of metal. You explain that everything they see has just
been sold. Metal prices, which have been depressed, have finally risen enough that the company can
earn a small profit by selling its scrap.
You point out that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But the purchasing manager who sold it says it must be shipped in 2 weeks. Without more workers
(there's a hiring freeze) and without forklifts, all of the metal has to be loaded by hand by these six
workers in 2 weeks. But how do you do that? What would motivate the students to work much,
much harder than they have all summer? They've gotten used to a leisurely pace and easy job
assignments. Motivation might help, but motivation will only get so much done. After all, short of
illegal steroids, nothing is going to work once muscle fatigue kicks in from carrying those 92–pound
pieces of metal up a ramp all day long. What can you change about the way the work is done to deal
with the unavoidable physical fatigue?
If you were the supervisor in charge, what would you do?

I stand up and walk over to Adam. He is sound asleep, a small amount of drool collecting on his

The Emissions Of The MHE ( Kg / Pallet )
EMHE emissions of the MHE (kg/pallet)
For VNA, the pallets are removed from the vehicle and placed on the warehouse floor for receiving
activities. Then pallets are shipped to the storage station at the end of the rack and stored on the
rack. The goods are lifted up to the mezzanine through the pallet gate and then manually stacked on
the shelf. All the goods are picked up on pallets in the picking area. The pallets are taken from the
picking area to the outbouding area.. However, compared to the WA, VNA is retrieved from the
storage area and not from a rack (Fichtinger et al. 2015). For AS / RS operations, it is similar with

Apart from the assumptions already stated, we assume the following hereafter in terms of energy
parameters for the simulation study, as summarised in Table 3. Building characteristics are

of warehouses.
It is assumed for the parameter "operating time" that all types of warehouses work 5 days per week
and 16 h per day (as indicated as common timings in Baker and Perotti, 2008).
Finally, to calculate GHG emissions of warehousing operations based on the integrated inventory
and warehouse model, the emission intensity has to be determined. This is usually done by using
appropriate conversion factors, which convert various types of fuels into kWh as a standard
measure. Based on the kWh value,

Scientists have researched into the subject of CLP or cleft lip/ pallet. Their studies have shown that
in the United States of America, roughly 2,650 babies were born with cleft lip and roughly 4,440
babies were born with the cleft pallet with in the last year. 1/700 babies are affected by this
particular genetic disorder. (C. Murray) However, having this disorder does not make you more
likely to have another disorder. With numbers so high, that leaves the question of what is a cleft lip/

Abstract
As Sheila Austin works out the decision to source from one of the two suppliers that have responded
to her request for quotes for a new wiring harness for Autolink, she is faced with a decision to go
with an international supplier in China, or from a local supplier. The initial look at the price quotes

It defines the expenditures and also denotes the possibility of cost reductions from the supplier's
marketing representative. This, for simplicities sake, can be possibly noted as the better of the two.
The overall unit price $31.27, and with the tooling cost of $ 6,000 and 5,000 units delivered, the
initial cost would be $162,350 for the first delivery (see figure 1). The $6,000 being a onetime fee
for the re–tooling will only be charged during the first delivery, or may be spaced out over the
course of several installments. Regardless, the re–tooling fee is not factored into the cost per unit as
there is no length of time set for the contracting. With Original Wire being a local vendor, close
buyer–seller relations may result from a long–term contract with price reductions. Since Original
Wire claims it is 'hungry' for business, there is the possibility of some price negotiations as well.

Official Narrative Essay Examination for Professional Certification in Packaging
Member Name: Nick Giesse
IoPP Member ID: 19982
Submission Date: August 4th, 2014
This question is taken from Narrative Exam Code 2NEC–C7: "4. Package design projects usually
start with a "Package Design Brief" document which will describe in some detail what the package
is suppose to achieve, with what product, targeted at what group, in what marketplace, against what
competition, by what means, and in conjunction with what other activities. Draw up a design brief
for a product of your choice. Include a sketch of the likely packaging system, and some general
assumptions regarding material performance requirements."
INTRODUCTION
Packaging engineers are tasked with collecting input from various functional areas in a business to
determine the best structural package for a project. Oftentimes, this project will start in the hands of
marketing or project managers, who determine the criteria the package must meet to fulfill the needs
of the project.
The packaging engineer can get this list of criteria in an organized format, usually in the form of a
package design brief, which is a document the project manager can use to get the right inputs to the
packaging engineer to start developing packaging concepts. Without this set of boundaries to design
against, it is difficult for the packaging engineer to begin any designs, because otherwise there are
too many possibilities that could be considered.

6.2.4 Automation is a must in Pallet reconditioning – Indian scenario
As evident from the above mentioned data analysis & graphs that automation is must in PR activity,

Case Analysis : Global Value Chain Strategies Essay
In this case analysis I will provide the most appropriate solutions to the issues raised in the
following from the perspective of global value chain strategies regarding ISOL +. A recommended
solution would be to build a new manufacturing facility close to the firm 's southern European
market. Since there is a large percentage of sales increase expected in Italy and Spain this will help
facilitate production levels. Also with this location it will also facilitate shipments and minimize
transit times which ultimately will help get product faster to the customer. With the current plant
capacity of 3,000,000 m^3, if there were to be an increase in the market of an additional 1,000,000
cubic m the facility will not be able to meet the additional demand. The two changes proposed to the
logistics setup are a decrease in the delivery time to 48 hours, and the other is to cut the minimum
order possible to the equivalent of four pallets. Both these proposals will lead to substantial increase
in the logistics costs. It is forecasted that during the next five years, 47% of the sales in France will
be of the size of four and six pallets. This makes it imperative that the minimum pallet size be
decreased from the current eight pallets to four pallets. Moreover, if the delivery time is to be
reduced to 48 hours, then production to order has to be abandoned. This reduction would mean
incurring costs of holding inventories of finished goods. Both these proposals would mean an

Description Of A On The Warehouse Manager System (...

  • 1. Description Of A On The Warehouse Manager System (... My Proposal: Focal points: Picking–  Order is placed by a customer online/phone  WMS (warehouse managing system) organizes the order into pick lines/pick list.  Based on how the warehouse is set up we move forward with following picking strategies:  By SKU (stock keeping unit): inventory is identified by these SKU.  Pro: Items are listed in order which will minimize backtracking  Con: A lot of time spent on transit, errors can be common and you need to train people on location codes. Ex. SKU beginning with 123 is situated in which aisle.  By Location: each item is paired with a location ID.  Pro: Knowing where the item is better then SKU and software can improve productivity  Con: transit time is still an issue  By Zone (pick–and–pass): workers assigned to a zone and once they complete their portion it is pass over to the next person until completion.  Pro: Reduces travel time of a an individual  Con: Must have a sophisticated WMS I would suggest using the zone method for organizing the warehouse as well as picking items as this puts us in a position regardless of city or location to succeed. If we are setting up shop in CA or NY we can bring this same methodology to any new warehouse and since we began with the most sophisticated WMS already; it ensures that 20 years from now we will still have something that is function. Packing–  Utilizing technology  Goal  Right size Box  Right amount of Boxes  Minimize shipping cost  Use the right kind of packing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pallets are what makes the business, then why not learn how to make one. I wanted to surprise my dad and show him that I can help in the business without the help of an adult. Day by day I began to watch the movements of lifting and nailing. I would pretend as if I had the real thing. First, I gathered the needed material: three runners, twelve boards, nails and a hammer. I put three imaginary runners on the floor. I put about five boards at the top and hammered them. Finally, I turned it around and put in the last remaining seven boards. I felt delighted knowing I had the right steps or so I had thought. I quietly walked to the back of the warehouse. First I reached over and one by one took three runners. I tried to carry it, but it was too heavy; dragging was the only option. Looking around to see my dad wasn't there, I went back and, two by two, I began dragging the boards to the back. It was behind about five stacks of twenty wooden pallets. As I hid there, I placed down the three runners vertically on the floor evenly spaced, creating a gap ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Intermodal Containers Moving Freight The advancement in technology and imaginative techniques, the procedures and systems of how cargo is moved and handled is streamlined. Prior to containerization, moving freight from one location to another across the globe was a tedious practice and often took an extended amount of time. Manufacturers would use various configurations with dissimilar sizes and weights which led to additional time at each location being required to handle the different sized cargo. The use of intermodal containers has changed the shipping industry allowing for multiple modes of transportation to rapidly cross load the containers and mover the containers to the next destination. Implementing the use intermodal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were significant delays in cross loading cargo onto the ship, workers would have to stack like packages, construct shipping pallets, and block and brace items in the hulls of the ships as well as the decks. When a piece of cargo was too large or heavy it would require additional material handling equipment to move the freight to the next transportation mode being either rail or road. At the receiving port there was also a time delay due to the need to offload the cargo by individual piece and separate in on the dock. Road and rail transportation were very effective, but encountered similar delays and issues depending on the size and weight of the cargo. This resulted in a call for change in the way freight is transported among all modes of transport. The Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration identified the need to implement change which is topic in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991 (ISTEA). Outlining what intermodal transportation is "utilizing two or more 'suitable' modes, in combination, to form an integrated transport chain aimed at achieving operationally efficient and cost effective delivery of goods in an environmentally sustainable manner from their ... • 19. Safety In The Movie : Tommy Boy : Occupational Safety Tommy Boy is misleading people to think that warehouse workers are irresponsible when it comes to safety. There is a lot of examples throughout the movie of people that are reckless while working in a storehouse setting. Throughout the movie they show these examples as being funny, but if these people really worked in a distribution center, they would have been written up or fired for violating the rules of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and most likely their company. Tommy Boy shows inaccurate examples of people that don't care about the safety of themselves or others. The movie starts off with main character Tommy going to see his father. His father is the one that owns the facility. When Tommy finds his father in a meeting, his father tells him to go with him and his employees to take a tour of the building. While on that tour they walk underneath a pallet that is elevated by a forklift. This is very dangerous because there is a lot of things that could happen. One would be that the forklift would move forward and run them over because the position of the load covers the view of the operator on the lift. The second would be that the operator of the forklift would lower the pallet on top of them. The last option is shown on the movie in which Tommy runs his head into the pallet. Tommy running into a pallet would have been a lot of safety issues when it came to really working in a warehouse. As well as, a lot of ways to get hurt or hurt someone else. ... It defines the expenditures and also denotes the possibility of cost reductions from the supplier's marketing representative. This, for simplicities sake, can be possibly noted as the better of the two. The overall unit price $31.27, and with the tooling cost of $ 6,000 and 5,000 units delivered, the initial cost would be $162,350 for the first delivery (see figure 1). The $6,000 being a onetime fee for the re–tooling will only be charged during the first delivery, or may be spaced out over the course of several installments. Regardless, the re–tooling fee is not factored into the cost per unit as there is no length of time set for the contracting. With Original Wire being a local vendor, close buyer–seller relations may result from a long–term contract with price reductions. Since Original Wire claims it is 'hungry' for business, there is the possibility of some price negotiations as well. Package design projects usually start with a "Package Design Brief" document which will describe in some detail what the package is suppose to achieve, with what product, targeted at what group, in what marketplace, against what competition, by what means, and in conjunction with what other activities. Draw up a design brief for a product of your choice. Include a sketch of the likely packaging system, and some general assumptions regarding material performance requirements." INTRODUCTION Packaging engineers are tasked with collecting input from various functional areas in a business to determine the best structural package for a project. The packaging engineer can get this list of criteria in an organized format, usually in the form of a package design brief, which is a document the project manager can use to get the right inputs to the packaging engineer to start developing packaging concepts. Without this set of boundaries to design against, it is difficult for the packaging engineer to begin any designs, because otherwise there are too many possibilities that could be considered. ... • 73. Case Analysis : Global Value Chain Strategies Essay In this case analysis I will provide the most appropriate solutions to the issues raised in the following from the perspective of global value chain strategies regarding ISOL +. A recommended solution would be to build a new manufacturing facility close to the firm 's southern European market. Since there is a large percentage of sales increase expected in Italy and Spain this will help facilitate production levels. Also with this location it will also facilitate shipments and minimize transit times which ultimately will help get product faster to the customer. With the current plant capacity of 3,000,000 m^3, if there were to be an increase in the market of an additional 1,000,000 cubic m the facility will not be able to meet the additional demand. The two changes proposed to the logistics setup are a decrease in the delivery time to 48 hours, and the other is to cut the minimum order possible to the equivalent of four pallets. Both these proposals will lead to substantial increase in the logistics costs. It is forecasted that during the next five years, 47% of the sales in France will be of the size of four and six pallets. This makes it imperative that the minimum pallet size be decreased from the current eight pallets to four pallets. Moreover, if the delivery time is to be reduced to 48 hours, then production to order has to be abandoned. This reduction would mean incurring costs of holding inventories of finished goods. Both these proposals would mean an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
