On The Golden Pond Reflection
On November 4th 2017, I went to Rex Mathes Auditorium , West Des Moines, Iowa for watching
the drama On the Golden Pond. The theatre group which performed was from Tallgrass Theatre
Company. Tallgrass theatre is all volunteer based. The stage and lighting were all set when I entered
inside the auditorium. This was my first drama watching experience in Iowa. On the Golden Pond
by Ernest Thompson is a story about an old couple, Ethel and Norman Thayer, who spend their each
summer on a lake Golden Pond, in the far northern New England. But this summer their daughter
Chelsea is going to visit them, who lives in California. I liked how the stage was done , it was very
relevant to the title On the golden pond. They had used wooden house/room with wooden stairs,
boat paddles, fishing rod and photo frames. The lake house was giving feeling of summer. After
arriving to the house , ethel notices loons calling on the lake. She was so happy that they are
welcoming them home. This was feeling of happiness, and I think it was very creative. The drama
also try to make up relationship between Father and daughter. Early in the play, Norman starts
making fun about his death in jokes and offhand comments. He talks about living long and
preparing for celebrating his last birthday. In one way, he seems to have a healthy attitude about his
death, but, in another, his unpleasant joking makes one wonder whether he is trying too hard to
maintain that act. There was humor

A Very Interesting Movie On Golden Pond
A very interesting movie On Golden Pond. Not only learning as you get older there are a lot of
changes as well when exploring your adolescent's years. Confusing, anxiety, anger, and a lot more
feelings that occur throughout the journey to late adulthood. The movie was mainly on the
characters Billy, Chelsea, Ethel, and Norman who were viewed dealing with biological, cognitive,
sociological experiences while dealing with obstacles of family struggles.
The main character observed was Norman even though it was his birthday and the rivals of his
daughter visit. He encounters many emotion's while on the journey entering late adulthood.
Biologically Norman faces fear of aging, but also feeling the past is fading away. Norman attitude
changes to due to grief felt as he experiences physical and mental changes, yet it puts relationships
in a warp of a tornado. As the movie progress you will see Norman reveal emotions, insecurity, and
mental instability and becomes a serious challenge, for example when Norman was lost in the
woods he came back running because he was not able to find his way back. With the disease he is
encountered with a slow mental decline. Aging adults become very grumpy, arrogant, and impatient,
however, Norman will not let go what was once familiar to him, and even if he struggles to claim a
command with the younger ones.
Not only is Norman facing old age he show signs and symptoms of cognitive impairment in that his
memory lost become more noticeable to his

Essay Summary of Thoreau
Synopsis Economy: This is the first chapter and also the longest by far. Thoreau begins by outlining
his project: a two–year and two–month stay at a crude cabin in the woods near Walden Pond. He
does this, he says, in order to illustrate the spiritual benefits of a simplified lifestyle. He easily
supplies the four necessities of life (food, shelter, clothing, and fuel). He meticulously records his
expenditures and earnings, demonstrating his understanding of "economy," as he builds his house
and buys and grows food. For a home and freedom, he spends a mere $25. Complementary Verses:
This chapter consists entirely of a poem, "The Pretensions of Poverty," by seventeenth–century
English poet Thomas Carew. The poem criticizes those who ... Show more content on

To him, the railroad symbolizes the destruction of the good old pastoral way of life. Following is a
description of the sounds audible from his cabin: the church bells ringing, carriages rattling and
rumbling, cows lowing, whip–poor–wills singing, owls hooting, frogs croaking, and cockerels
crowing. Solitude: Thoreau rhapsodizes about the beneficial effects of living solitary and close to
nature. He loves to be alone, for "I never found the companion that was so companionable as
solitude," and he is never lonely as long as he is close to nature. He believes there is no great value
to be had by rubbing shoulders with the mass of humanity. Visitors: Thoreau writes about the
visitors to his cabin. Among the 25 or 30 visitors is a young Canadian woodchopper, whom Thoreau
idealizes as approaching the ideal man, and a runaway slave, whom Thoreau helps on his journey to
freedom in Canada. The Bean–Field: Thoreau relates his efforts to cultivate two and a half acres of
beans. He plants in June and spends his summer mornings weeding the field with a hoe. He sells
most of the crop, and his small profit of $8.71 covers his needs. The Village: Thoreau visits the
small town of Concord every day or two to hear the news, which he finds "as refreshing in its way
as the rustle of the leaves." Nevertheless, he fondly but rather contemptuously compares Concord to
a gopher colony. In late summer, he is arrested for refusing to pay

Erickson's Psychological Stages In The Film On Golden Pond
In this movie titled "On golden Pond" it represents the lives of an old couple Norman and Ethel as
well as their family. As the movie progresses we are introduced to their daughter as well as her new
husband, Billy and Billy Ray Jr. who are all at different developmental stages in Erickson's
Psychological stages. Which the movie and the actors do a superb job at showing information
through their actions and as a result makes it easier to determine what stage they are in.
To begin with the characters that are first introduced are Norman and Ethel. Who are both getting
towards the end of their lives because they are kind of old and are done working. Which is the final
stage of in Erickson's model called Integrity vs. Despair. Which is something that Norman has a
hard time dealing with throughout most of the movie. He seems to feel like he can still work and
wants to find a Job. Even though he was previously a professor he does not feel completely satisfied
with his life. He also seems to fear the idea of death as he does not want to be seen as old and wants
to act like he is still young hence the reason why he wants to get a job. Norman can also be seen as

Such as Chelsea for instance who is in her forty's and as still having a hard time getting along with
her dad since she was a child. This is something that one would expect from a child not an adult.
Also how Norman is depicted as not feeling like he has done enough in his life to feel that he has
lived it to the fullest and Billy Ray Jr. being shown as a kid who does not want to do anything that
Norman wants to with him and eventually forming a bond with him. Over all the movie helped me

Shrimp Culture Essay
ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF SHRIMP CULTURE IN LINED PONDS
1. ABSTRACT:
This paper views about the economic analysis and the process of shrimp farming (Litopenaeus
vannamei) on experimental basis practiced in Maritech Research and Extension Centre,
Tharuvaikulam, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The economic analysis confirms that the feed cost
(37.47%); seed cost (18.47%) and labour cost (14.24%) dominates with irrespective of other costs
(in terms of percentage respectively) of shrimp culture. The culture started with well–advanced pre–
stocking and post stocking management practices. The calculated benefit cost ratio for the shrimp
culture was found to be 1.231 (Positive). Based on the experience, this paper would discuss on the
topic related to economic background of the shrimp culture; bio–security measures for the
sustainable aquaculture and their role in production and

Stages Of Development In Eric Erikson's On Golden Pond
When assessing the stage of developments, my personal favorite is the adolescent years. Mainly,
because that is the age gap that I remember the most because it was so tough and challenging. When
thinking about the adolescent years, my favorite theorists to utilize is Erik Erikson. I particularly
like his stages because they are very clear and precises about the negatives and positives of each
stage. So, after watching On Golden Pond, I have chosen to reflect of the Character Billy. Billy is a
thirteen year old boy, so according to Erikson, he is an adolescent, going through Identity versus
Role Confusion (website). To begin with, an adolescent is leaving the stage of complete dependency
of parents, and entering a world of wanting to do things on their own. In the process of wanting to
do things on their own, an adolescent is also trying to find out who they are in this world. The
adolescent learns their identity through exploration of themselves and their boundaries (website).
Billy chooses to find his identity by appearing cooler than he really is. When talking to Norman,
who is significantly older than him, Billy refers to the girls at home and how he likes to make out
with them. He uses youthful language such as "sucking face" and "cruising ... Show more content on

Often times if an adolescent wants to fit in, or figure out who they are, they may choose to reflect
people they admire (notes). In Billy's instance, he chose to admire and mirror Norman. Norman is
the elderly man who ends up taking Billy under his wing, which results in them bonding. By the end
of the movie, Billy had began to reflect Norman in his mannerisms, his language and his toughness.
In a fishing scene in the movie, Billy gets a huge fish and directs Norman to get the net. Billy says,
"Get the net Norman, get it in gear turkey" (movie). This is quite humorous because scenes before,
this would be something identical to what Norman would have

John Thoreau Summary
8 – 7 – 17 Visitors I was startled at the beginning of the chapter by Thoreau's confession that he
loves society, despite him previously saying that he did not like company, making me think even the
most introverted have a longing for connection. I enjoyed the part where Thoreau talks about risk. It
made sense to me when he states that as long as someone is alive, there is always the danger that he
will die. I have contemplated this before, that there is no way to truly be safe, so we must be
confident in the risks we take. For example, the majority of people in the US drive almost every day,
and driving is very dangerous, having killed a large amount of people. Thoreau highly regards
frankness in conversation, and he says about one of his visitors who is truthful that "our intercourse
might go forward to something better than the intercourse of sages." I personally agree with him. I'd
much rather prefer someone to be honest with me than to tell me lies that are meant to please me.
However, I do not think it is always the best idea to be frank, because there are many people who
get easily offended by the truth. I always feel bad hiding the truth from someone to make them feel
happy, but sometimes it is more practical to make that decision. Another thing Thoreau says which
caught my attention was his observation of the positive originality that one of his visitors displays.
Thoreau says that he was "thinking for himself and expressing his own opinion," a rare
phenomenon, and

Walden As A Mirror, Walden
Reflections: Walden as a Mirror, Walden as a Lens
When Henry David Thoreau went to Walden Pond on July 4, 1845, he had no way of knowing that
200 years later, Walden would be required reading for anyone with even a passing interest in
American literature, environmental literature, or intentional living. But Walden is so much more
than the story of one man's retreat into the woods to 'transact some private business.' Thoreau's
disarming directness and naturalistic style aside, Walden not an incidental text. With extensive
revisions, distilling a little over two years into one, every chapter, sentence and word of Walden has
a purpose and place. Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo is credited with saying, 'Every block of
stone has a statue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, aside from a brief reference to the cycle of the seasons, where Thoreau says that he lived 'a
summer and a winter life; saw how [he] could let the years run off, buffet the winter through and see
the spring come in,' this chapter gains seasonal association through the knowledge that Thoreau
went to Walden in the summer. 'The Ponds' brings us explicitly into autumn progressing from 'a
calm September afternoon,' to 'such a day in September or October,' to a November after 'the severe
frosts have come.' 'The Pond in Winter' brings the seasonal theme into the title and finally the
culmination of, 'Spring.' 'Where I Lived, and What I Lived For' begins Walden's central narrative.
'Economy' addresses the practicalities and the surface narrative, but 'Where I Lived, and What I
Lived For' lays out the groundwork for the extended metaphor that serves as Walden's symbolic
backbone. 'Time is but the stream I go a–fishing in, I drink at; but while I drink I see the sandy
bottom and detect how shallow it is. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains. I would drink
deeper; fish in the sky, whose bottom is pebbly with stars,' Thoreau tells us at the end of the chapter.
This quote illustrates two concepts that recur again and again in Walden. First, the idea of water as
simultaneously shallow and deep. Thoreau first proclaims that he can see the bottom of the 'stream'
but then elaborates, implying that there is something beyond the

Rhetorical Analysis On What I Lived For
Within Henry David Thoreau's excerpt Where I Lived, and What I Lived For, he employs metaphors
in his writing to inspire the reader to live deliberately and with purpose. Furthermore, his use of
metaphors also serve as a critique of society. Thoreau aims to make the audience realize a deeper,
more true meaning of life than is portrayed by much of society. A prominent extended metaphor in
his excerpt is about the railroad. Thoreau uses the railroad metaphor to describe society's
dependence upon industry and reflect their fast–paced and shallow lifestyle. Thoreau evinces a
paradox of society when he says, "If we do not get out sleepers, and forge rails, and devote days and
nights to the work, but go tinkering upon our lives to improve them, who ... Show more content on

However, if they were to be complacent and stay home, there would be no need to build railroads or
expand industry. These different views reflect the contradiction in society and in an individual's
mind. People think that they always have to be moving and building and instituting some new
technology that will somehow make us great and earn a spot in heaven. However, people end up
hurting themselves with this mindset because they are selling themselves short of the full potential
of life, which, according to Thoreau, is to live fully and deliberately. Thoreau is exposing that
humans strive for superficial success through their complicated and expeditive routines of their
everyday lives, but true success comes by improving one's own life. Later in the metaphor, Thoreau
uses the train to point out oppression and manipulation done by society. He states, "We do not ride
on the railroad; it rides upon us. Did you ever think what those sleepers are that underlie the

Phosphorus And Nitrogen And How They Affect The Amount Of...
Levels of Phosphorus and Nitrogen and how they affect the amount of Dissolved Oxygen
Abstract: Humans often use fertilizers in order to increase product production and ensure a healthy
crop. In recent years it has been found that large amounts of artificial nitrogen in fertilizer has been
used to increase the overall crop rates, to meet the demands of the increased growth rates within the
human population ( Zhang, Wang, and Wu 2014). Based on these findings we were lead to question
why or if increased levels of fertilizer impair aquatic ecosystems. Therefore we conducted research
to find the correlation with increased levels of fertilizer and algae production. To conduct our
research we obtained three samples from Dolese Pond, and within two of these samples fertilizer
was added. After the fertilizer was added, measurements of dissolved oxygen, within each sample,
were then taken over a course of four weeks. Our results offered that within the initial measurements
the control held the least amount of dissolved oxygen while the sample with the added 10 mL of
fertilizer yielded the highest amounts of dissolved oxygen. Dissolved oxygen concentrations need to
be maintained within bodies of water due to the fact that this oxygen is needed to support life while
preserving the health for the overall aquatic environment (Bailey and Ahmadi 2014).
Introduction: The process of eutrophication is responsible for around one–half of the damaged lake
ecosystems and around 60% of the

Henry Thoreau's Three Major Beliefs
Henry Thoreau was an American essayist and philosopher. He was very famous for his writings. His
most famous book is about his experience while staying on the Walden Pond. He named the book
Walden. In Walden, he stated a lot of his most famous views and beliefs. His views were authentic
and impactful. He believed that a person doesn't need all the latest and fanciest technology to live an
excellent life. He thinks that having enough to get by is all a person needs. Thoreau states three
major beliefs in this book. He argues that sometimes it's better to do things yourself, there are more
things to experience and enjoy in the world that is free, and people are stronger than they think.

On Golden Pond Essay
One can't help but to draw links to the aging process when watching the three times Oscar winning
movie On Golden Pond. In Mark Rydell's On Golden Pond, we encounter a couple in the middle of
dealing with the anxieties and hardship of moving through the latter part of their life cycle. The
older actors played by Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn demonstrates different levels of activity,
age stratification, continuity, and disengagement theory in their lives.
Activity Theory argues that the more active a people are the more likely they are to be satisfied with
like (Moody & Sasser, 2015). This is evident throughout the movie as Ethel tries to get Norman to
be more engaging with life. Ethel is active, very optimistic and has a positive outlook ... Show more

around by employing Activity Theory. His preoccupied thoughts of death begin to fade and he has
sense of fulfillment when he begins to mentor a young boy. On Golden Pond shows how Norman
over comes his growing thoughts, anger and fear of growing old and finally death. Growing old is
process and everyone has to find our own way. It also show there is no one theory that encompasses
everything that a person deals with as they transition into old age. Lastly the film depicts how these

Is The Difference Between Henry David Thoreau And E. B. White
Walden Pond, located in Concord, Massachusetts, was a place of inspiration for two well–known
authors, Henry David Thoreau and E.B. White. Although, they wrote about the same place, their
experiences were a century apart. Thoreau visited the lake in 1854 where technology still wasn't as
advanced as it was in 1939 when White visited the historical site leading to a different feel for the
place. The authors' style of approaching the view of the lake has both similar and different effects
when using point of view, imagery, and logos. In comparison, Thoreau and White use the first
person point of view in their writings, but in contrast they do not have same writing style. Thoreau
writes about his surroundings and writes with serenity. With many details he describes how the
forest brings calm to your soul and you feel connected to God and there is nothing to really care for.
He writes without a real purpose, it seems as if he is rambling to the audience about his thoughts and
feelings indicating them that they should live in simplicity. Thoreau has no real interest in

Thoreau's main message in the story was that humans are supposed to live a simple life and that
getting closer to nature would help the human race reach that simplicity in life. He compares us as
"mad ants" that are always busy, rushing and we always have something to do. Thoreau goes into
details when he describes the mountains and the morning dew and his morning routines and with the
vivid vision he connects it all back to serenity. White, on the other hand, uses imagery to describe
how technology has advanced since Thoreau had been there. He informs Thoreau that Walden Pond
had become the states property and there are signs all over the site such as "no swimming in the
pond" and that the pond now had water fountains and people would take their boats to the

Canyon Lake has always been a popular place of recreation for the citizens of Rapid City. Former
Pennington county official C. E. completely encapsulated the pleasure that Canyon Lake brings to
the citizens of Rapid City in one simple statement, "I know of nothing which adds to the real
pleasure of living in a community so much as does a body of water" (C.E. Smith). But this
picturesque local park is not as pure as it seems, the small local reservoir has many unhealthy
ecological problems hidden below the surface of the water. This a problem that could jeopardize the
health of the lake, as well as the recreation of this park, therefore it is imperative to clean and

According to Mike Kintigh of the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks, Canyon Lake is regularly
stocked with catchable–sized rainbow trout. Catchable–sized rainbow trout are defined as being
between eleven and fifteen inches. Mike used the phrase " Stock and Take" while describing Canyon
Lake, according to him this means that fish are regularly stocked every three weeks for the purpose
to be caught by anglers. He stated that the main purpose of Canyon lake was for fun, entertainment,
and recreation (Mike Kintigh, Game Fish and Parks). This is obviously true due to the fact of the
popularity of canyon lake.
Alternatively, to those who support the clean up of Canyon Lake, the price is a trivial factor in the
grand scheme. Proponents of revitalizing the reservoir argue that cleaning the lake would positively
affect the health of the lake, the recreation of the park, and even the revenue of surrounding
businesses. Many of the problems plaguing this body of water can be with a few simple steps. The
water testing showed many detrimental environmental effects. Measurements of Canyon Lake were
done using a classroom set of water testing chemicals. The pH level of the water was six point five
on the pH scale, this is common and does not show any problems with Ph. The nitrate level was
unusually high for a body of water measuring point one parts per million. Grievously, the reservoir

Erikson's theory that "Adults problems echo their childhood conflicts". (Invitation to the Life span,

Theme Of Nature In Thoreau
discards the language of obedience and redemption used by the church. To Thoreau, Nature and God
are at once synonymous and interconnected: "Next to us the grandest laws are continually being
executed. Next to us is not the workman we have hired, with whom we love so well to talk, but the
workman whose work we are." (175) Thoreau believes in a creator god, a living god that makes of
"Nature" his home. Thoreau feels "Nature" is a divine space: a space where man is able to feel close
to his god, a space where man is able to appreciate his god's favors and "Nature" is the space where
man can embrace the god within himself. Influenced by Emerson, Coleridge and Wordsworth,
among others, Thoreau thinks that nature is the source of strength, spirituality ... Show more content

One would approach at first warily through the shrub oaks, running over the snow–crust by fits and
starts like a leaf blown by the wind, now a few paces this way, with wonderful speed and waste of
energy, making inconceivable haste with his "trotters," as if it were for a wager, and now as many
paces that way, but never getting on more than half a rod at a time; and then suddenly pausing with a
ludicrous expression and a gratuitous somerset, as if all the eyes in the universe were eyed on him –
for all the motions of a squirrel, even in the most solitary recesses of the forest, imply spectators as
much as those of a dancing girl – wasting more time in delay and circumspection than would have

all imaginary spectators, soliloquizing and talking to all the universe at the same time – for no
reason that I could ever detect, or he himself was aware of, I suspect" (357). Concurrently, Thoreau
projects an image of nature as a whole, as a distinct, living and essential presence rather than as an
accumulation of items to which man assigns significance. The interconnectedness of the various
components of nature is illustrated in this passage of Walden: "Standing at the smooth sandy beach

Walden Location Essay
In Thoreau's novel, Walden, the reader is introduced to Thoreau's world and how it is greatly
impacted by location. Thoreau begins his project by moving away from civilization and searching
for a place to live. He finds his temporary home at Walden Pond, where he starts with few resources
and little outside inputs. Thoreau even has to borrow the axe that he uses to cut down trees to make
his home for the next two years. Thoreau asserts that his experiment, moving to Walden Pond, is not
permanent. Walden Pond is, however, the foundation precept of how location impacts one's way of
life. The place one live shapes the way one live and how one interact with the world around oneself.
Before Thoreau makes the bold decision of living in seclusion, he lives in a community. Thoreau
decides to move away from civilization so that he can find himself. He believes that he ... Show

He sees the parts of nature around him as actual beings that have feelings. Though personifying
nature may seem strange, doing so is what prevents Thoreau from becoming lonely. Thoreau even
goes as far as to write, "I am no more lonely than a single mullein or dandelion in a pasture, or a
bean leaf, or sorrel, or a horse–fly, or a bumble–bee" (pg #). Thoreau is content with the place he
lives and becomes one with the nature that surrounds him.
Thoreau makes use of the land and nature around him at Walden Pond. He plants two and a half
acres of beans that he farms. This shows that Thoreau is adaptive and learns to work with nature.
The rain that comes and goes helps his crops grow. Thoreau relies on the place he lives to sustain
himself. He trades his beans with others for food, and makes a profit off of the land on which he
lives. The place that he inhabits becomes his main concern and priority. This helps readers to
understand why the place one lives and treats as one's home has such an effect on one's way of

Fishing
Everyone loves spending their time at the lake on a good summer evening with friends and family,
whether they're having a camp fire and just circling it, cracking jokes, or fishing. People fish for a
various of reasons, some may eat the fish (hey, basically free food!), just simply toss the fish back
into the body of water which they got it from, or even just fish for the sake of it, and let the fishes
die because of them being forgotten about. Whatever you're reasoning for fishing is, there is always
going to be a bad side to it, even if your intentions are not to do so. There are number of reasons
why people fish, reasons such as enjoying the feeling of catching huge fish, enjoying the scenery of
the sunset, getting some relax time to themselves, getting to hang out with friends, competing with
friends about who gets more fish or the bigger fish, and for survival (if you already have your
license, and need something for dinner, there you are !). However, No one has really has put thought
into how fishing may affect the environment of that body of water. Let's talk about what really goes
on in ponds/lakes. Most large bodies of water here in Kansas consist of largemouth bass, blue gill,
and channel catfish. These fishes all spawn when the water gets warm, so during spring or early
summer, for the bass; 60–70 degrees, and for the catfish. 70–75 degrees. When these eggs are laid,
the father fish protects the eggs and makes sure nothing happens to them. Lets say someone decides
to go fishing at the time the father is protecting the eggs, the male fish will see the hook as a threat
to the eggs and attack it. There you go, you got a catch! But do you really know what that means?
Because you have caught the male fish, who's there to protect the eggs? The amount of eggs laid by
these types of fish can be up to 500. There's a specific reason why it's the male protecting the egg
and not the woman, the male is stronger and can protect the eggs from being eaten and can keep
them warm better. Any who, because you caught the male protector, the eggs will all die because
they will be exposed to the cold lake. That's 501 fish you costs the pond although you only

Erik Erikson 's ' On Golden Pond '
Erik Erikson has developed the psychosocial theory that proposes eight stages across the life span of
human development. Each and every one of the stages has a "crisis", a significant psychosocial topic
that is important in that moment. The theories are deliberately having an impact on by social and
cultural influence a process of development of the ego and self. "According to Erikson, the ego
develops as it successfully resolves crisis that are distinctly social in nature. These involves
establishing a sense of trust in others, developing a sense of identity in society, and helping the next
generation prepare for the future. (McLeod 2008, p. 1) In this paper I will be talking about each of
the main characters in the movie, "On Golden Pond" and what they all go through to a crisis of
psychosocial development using Erikson's theory. In the movie each of the main characters, Norman
who is eighty years old, Ethel who is seventy years old and Chelsea who is forty years old go
through some of the stages of psychosocial development. The first character in the movie I will be
talking about is Norman. I recognized him first from the movie because I knew something seemed
wrong with him. For example, in the beginning of the movie him and his wife Ethel goes to their

Options for Production Systems Applicable to IAAS
There are four broad options for production systems applicable to IAAS, namely: farm dams; pond
culture; tank culture, and cage–based culture. Production system design for any one integrated
farming model is likely to fit into one of the following three categories: Extensive systems:
characterized by ambient conditions, low stocking density and generally using existing
infrastructure with little or no modification (e.g. farm dams) or management intervention (e.g. no
supplementary feeding). Semi–intensive systems: usually occurs in modified/constructed ponds,
cages or tanks under ambient conditions with moderate stocking densities requiring management of
water exchange, water quality and feeding regimes. Intensive systems: high stocking density, high
levels of capital investment and reliant on complete control of water quality and feeding regimes
under largely controlled environmental conditions. Ponds can vary greatly in size and depth,
depending on site characteristics, but are generally 0.1–2.0 ha in area, 0.5–2.0 m deep and may have
a sloping bottom from 0.5 m to 1.5–2.0m deep, draining to a harvesting sump (Ogburn et al. 1995).
For this project the pond type will be discussed, as the fish farm we selected is pond culture. There
are different reasons affecting to the choice of the selection of farm. The main reason for choosing
the Charly's Angels culture is that as the main goal of this thesis is to utilize water use of fishponds

Analysis Of The Circumplex Model In On Golden Pond
The Circumplex Model: Adaptability and Flexibility Throughout On Golden Pond, it is apparent that
Chelsea, Norman, and Ethel are rigidly enmeshed. According to Olson's circumplex model, rigidly
enmeshed families have authoritarian leadership, strict discipline, roles rarely change, there is too
little change. Additionally, enmeshment in families is illustrated by very high closeness, very high
loyalty, high dependency, and a lack of individuality (Sanders & Bell, 2011). Although Chelsea is
distant with her family in the number of visits it is an artificial distance of time and space. They are
strongly emotionally entangled as demonstrated through the ability of the family to emotionally
affect one and other. Slightly like the characters in On Golden Pond, the family in Stepmom appear
to be chaotically enmeshed. The circumplex model claims families who are chaotic present with a
lack of leadership, erratic discipline, dramatic role shifts, and too much change (Sanders & Bell,
2011). Chaos is present in the structure of the two living environments of the children: one
environment is structured and the other one is disorderly. This leads to confusion for the children
because the system lacks consistency. Enmeshment is personified through the children's emotional
fusion with their mother. When Jackie is upset with Isabel, the children are upset with Isabel. The
children and the mother's emotions are intertwined. On the other hand, Rita slightly contrasts the
two families above as she appears to be rigidly disengaged instead of enmeshed. Rita and Denny are

Critical Analysis Of Walden By Henry David Thoreau
Critical Analysis of "Walden"
The autobiography "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau is a first–person narrative explaining what
Thoreau personally experienced from his experiment after two years of living at Walden Pond,
encompassed by nature. Thoreau isolates himself from society and martial earnings to gain a higher
understanding of what it means to have freedom as an individual. He simplifies his life to get closer
to nature to learn more about himself and society. If we focus too much on obtaining these so–called
comforts of life. We blur the fact that these luxuries are a hindrance to self–freedom. In society, if
you do not follow the same rhythm as everyone else. You will be seen as an out casting in the
community. That is not freedom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, Thoreau was ahead of his time as historians place the golden age of free thought from
1875 to 1914. This idea of personal freedom was not popular at the time "Walden" was only a
marginal success. Afterward, in the Civil Rights moment the "Walden" became very popular with
young Americans. The "Walden" inspired theses' Americans to obtain real freedom with many
examples. "I see young men, my townsmen, whose misfortune it is to have inherited farms, houses,
barns, cattle, and farming tools; for these are more easily acquired than got rid of." At the time most,
parents expected their sons to take over the farm after the father became feeble. Therefore, most
men were forced to work the farm instead of pursuing what they wanted. Instead a man becomes a
machine that has no freedom. Therefore, have a feeling that his only function was to replace the old
machine before him. "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation" Technologies today give us
the illusion of heightened freedom. In the United States, we can obtain every material item we
desire. Even though we still have the highest rate of anxiety disorders and depression in the world.
Thoreau explains "Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth." To have true freedom
and happiness you must face your demons. As material earnings can't cover up your inner truth.
Many Americans can't handle the truth and this why we live a life of desperation. Thoreau

Analysis Of Thoreau 's ' Solitude '
Thoreau opens "Solitude" with a melodious articulation of his pleasure in and sensitivity for nature.
When he comes back to his home in the wake of strolling at night, he finds that guests have ceased
by, which prompts him to remark both on his strict separation from others while at the lake and on
the non–literal space between men. There is closeness in his association with nature, which gives
adequate fraternity and blocks the likelihood of forlornness. The immensity of the universe puts the
space between men in context. Thoreau brings up that on the off chance that we accomplish a more
prominent closeness to nature and the heavenly, we won 't require physical nearness to others in the
"station, the mail station, the tavern, the meeting–house, the school building" – places that offer the
sort of organization that diverts and disperses. He remarks on man 's double nature as a physical
element and as a scholarly observer inside his own particular body, which isolates a man from
himself and adds encourage point of view to his separation from others. Also, a man is constantly
alone when thinking and working. He finishes up the part by alluding to allegorical guests who
speak to God and nature, to his own unity with nature, and to the wellbeing and imperativeness that
nature gives. Proceeding with the topic created in "Higher Laws," "Brute Neighbors" opens with an
exchange amongst Hermit and Poet, who typify spellbound parts of the creator himself (creature

The idea of agritourism urges guests to experience agricultural life at first hand. Agritourism is
gathering strong backing from little groups as rural people have realised the advantages of

A Fish Pond is a small pond containing fish, often one in which edible fish are raised for
commercial purposes, as for stocking lakes and streams or wholesaling. It is a controlled lake,

is utilized for recreational fishing or for ornamental purposes.
History and Origin of Fishing Pond
During the winter, supplying fresh food for a castle garrison was a constant struggle. Though meat
would be available from deer parks, this couldn't supply the necessities of the entire family. A fish
pond gave an elegant solution. As long as there was a natural flow of water into the pond, fish
required no feeding and were accessible available all year round. There would usually be a series of
ponds, with fish being moved between them as they grew.

The, Wildlife, And The Natural Land, By Henry David Thoreau
Just years after the Industrial Revolution, a time at which engineering and the economy became the
main concerns of the population, many of the American people forgot the importance of the land
that provided the resources that sustained them. In a time where there was believed to be nowhere
but society to reside in, few refuted the idea that the wilderness was really so uncivilized. In his
1845 memoir, Henry David Thoreau describes his experiences living in a quaint cabin, "in the
wilderness", alongside Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. Presenting his findings of being
self–reliable, Thoreau depicts what his life was like alone in the woods with only nature to ease
one's mind and solitude to provide company. With detailed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He accordingly conveys this idea by stating that society only believes in intrinsic value and only
once one can seclude themselves from the portrait of society can one come to find instrumental
value.
Continuing with his descriptions of the Walden Pond during winter, Thoreau presents the idea of
overconsumption and sustainability throughout the book. While observing the ice cutters at Walden
Pond, Thoreau comments on human effort to exploit nature, arguing that the actions are in vain as
nature regenerates much faster than it can be threatened, which is very debatable due to the
knowledge that there is only a finite amount of resources on the planet. Thoreau thoroughly believes
in his idea of self–reliance and states that there are only four necessities that should determine one's
ability to survive: food, shelter, clothing, and fuel, many of which he believes nature provides
graciously. This refutes the idea that prosperity is dependent widescale economic surplus. Thoreau
makes his argument clear, writing that any attempt at luxury is likely to prove more as a hinderance
that an aid to one's individual improvement as in Economy when he writes "Most men, even in this
comparatively free country, through mere ignorance and mistake, are so

Analysis Of Henry David Thoreau 's ' Walden '
Henry David Thoreau will go down in history as one of the greatest influential writer's and
philosophers in American history. Not only was he a smart and intelligent man, but he had such
wisdom and determination when he looked at every aspect of life. Thoreau was just an ordinary
individual from Concord, which helped the readers relate to him on a more personal level when they
read his work. In Thoreau's Walden, he wanted the reader to understand that you should live life
more simple, connect with nature so you can connect with God, and live your life working hard so
you do not have to solely rely on anyone.
Thoreau moved and lived in the woods for two years to simply live simpler. Before Thoreau moved
into the woods, he had been living in Concord, Massachusetts. "Young Thoreau, then in his late 20s,
had tried to live as others lived – as "a schoolmaster, a private tutor, a surveyor, a gardener, a farmer,
a house painter, a carpenter, a mason, a day–laborer, a pencil–maker, a glass–paper maker, a writer,
and sometimes a poetaster," by his own reckoning – but had found those careers wanting. "The mass
of men," he wrote, "lead lives of quiet desperation." He was determined not to be one of them."
(Christian Science Monitor) Thoreau wanted to find his place in the world, he wanted to find his
purpose. Thoreau once said, "I went to the woods because I wished to live life deliberately, to front
only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach,

Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Northern Michigan
Growing up in Northern Michigan and having family members from all over the state meant that my
family traveled around quite a bit to see all of the natural wonders that Michigan has to offer. From
the time I was born until now I have lived in the same neighborhood (Lake Arrowhead). When I was
in fifth grade my parents divorced but because both of them loved the neighborhood so much my
mom kept our house and my dad built a new home about three miles away but still in the same
neighborhood. I use to think this was strange that my parents were divorced but still lived in the
same subdivision, as I got older I realized it was because they both shared the same love for the
Lake and wanted their children to be raised by the water. This neighborhood is special for many
reasons, it is a private neighborhood, there is many miles of trails for ATVs, a private pool, and most

Attitudes Toward Conversations In Walden, By Henry David...
In this excerpt from his book Walden, Henry David Thoreau discusses having visitors over at his
house, how the size of the room and the distance between each other affects their conversations, and
the fact that the outdoors is the best place to have a conversation. Throughout the passage, he uses
various literary devices that give extra meaning to his words and help to explain his attitude towards
his visitors. Thoreau uses literary devices such as irony and metaphor throughout the passage to
develop his apathetic attitude towards his visitors. Thoreau uses irony to develop his apathetic
attitude towards visitors. Towards the beginning of the passage he says, "I am ready enough to
fasten myself like a bloodsucker for the time to any full–blooded man that comes in my way" and "I
had three chairs in my house" (lines 1–5). It is ironic that Thoreau seems so eager and willing to
have visitors at his house, but at the same time he doesn't even try to make his visitors comfortable
(which in theory should attract more people to his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the middle of the passage he says, "If we are merely loquacious and loud talkers, then we can
afford to stand very near together... but if we speak reservedly and thoughtfully, we want to be
farther apart" (lines 32–34). This metaphor compares being physically close in a room with other
people to being close to them on a personal level, as well as compares being physically spread apart
in a room to having enough "space" to get to know their ideas. In other words, this is a metaphor
that compares a real room to an intellectual one. Thoreau doesn't care about understanding the
feelings of other people and getting to know his visitors on a personal level, but rather he cares
about understanding their ideas and getting some kind of intellectual gain from his visitors. This is
apathetic, or indifferent due to lack of energy or concern, because Thoreau doesn't have enough

Mark Rydell's "On Golden Pond" is a drama that emphasizes the stages people of various ages

main characters can be placed within a stage and their age–related crises analyzed. As this film is a
drama, it was relatable to the audience, prompting personal reactions as well as implementing life
examples of some of the theories studied in Malone's class. Perhaps the most significant character,

As beautiful as life is, it can be hard to watch someone get older. When our bodies do not work the

about this was the best decision to make. Ethel Thayer also is in Erikson's psychosocial stage Late
Adulthood, dealing with the crisis of integrity versus despair. Unlike Norman, Ethel is very satisfied
with her life and what the audience sees is a woman of integrity. For sometime I thought Ethel might
still be in the stage of middle adulthood, but instead I think she is just a very well–adjusted older
woman. Ethel likes nothing more to be outside collecting strawberries or watching the loons. Ethel
makes strong attempts to ensure her loved ones are satisfied with their own lives. She has a hard

David Grusin's On Golden Pond
David Grusin is the composer for On Golden Pond. He was the composer for The Graduate and The
Goonies which are films that I recognized but have not yet seen. I selected On Golden Pond because
I had not heard of the movie beforehand. The 1980s was full of electronic music; however, this film
featured no electronic pop. The film is only instrumental, and due to the fact, the film focuses on an
older couple dealing with growing older and their time with a young man named Billy, I believe the
score is appropriate. When looking at the theme from The Goonies, the use of piano and strings are
apparent in both films.
From the beginning of the film, the score was a peaceful piano piece that went along with the
scenery. It was gentle and non–threatening. There is a flute, or other woodwind, that joins the piano,
and this is when a car is seen driving by. Later strings join the ensemble and the music all continues
to be soft. This reassured me that the movie would not be dark or overwhelming. The theme music

nature to On Golden Pond's theme occurs often. This changeover generally indicated a change in
scene or a resolution to a conflict. There were few moments of conflict where the music fills with
brass sounds and takes on a tense feeling. For example, when the main character goes for a walk in
the woods, I appreciate that the music is heard throughout his walk, it sounds like a harp, other
strings, and woodwind instruments. The audience can hear the leaves crunching and birds; however,
when the music becomes faster and takes on lower pitches, one truly feels the man's stress of
becoming lost in the forest. Additionally, the shift from soft to loud occurs frequently throughout the

A Multi Scale Optimization Framework
CO2 is an important greenhouse gas (GHG) and emission of CO2 to the atmosphere needs to be
reduced in order to mitigate climate change. It is imperative to device ways of proper CO2
utilization and storage. CO2 can be sequestered geologically as well as there are other ways of CO2
utilization which can be economically viable in places where geological storage is not the most
optimal solution. In the present study, the primary focus is on the integration potential of two GHG
abatement options, which are geological sequestration of CO2 and biological sequestration of CO2
via microalgae growth, harvest and conversion to bioproducts. There are several ways of microalgae
conversion to an array of products, as discussed in the previous sections. The present study aims to
quantify the techno–economic tradeoffs and optimize the entire supply–chain of CO2 utilization to
ensure the most economically feasible alternative of CO2 usage. A multi–scale optimization
framework is proposed. The mathematical framework is provided in Figure 2. The model takes into
account the design of pipeline network for CO2 transport, different processing routes for microalgae
conversion as well as CO2 geological storage. A case–study is considered to assess the optimal
design of GHG capture, storage and/or utilization for the state of Texas in United States. Such an
effort will help inform decision and policy makers the optimal pathway of CO2 storage and
utilization procedures for a particular location.

the forgetfulness is a common among older adults, we as healthcare providers must evaluate altered
mental status of the patients. "The evaluation and management of altered mental status are broad

communication continuum.
Norman develops a friendship with Billy, a teenager staying with Norman and
Ethel for a month. Throughout the movie Norman stretches his normally closed communication
patterns as he grows to care for Billy. Evidently
Norman is able to transcend his old pattern of shutting everyone out. He learns that he must be
willing to disclose a bit about himself if he wants a relationship with Billy.
Our text defines self presentation as "the process of revealing or disclosing ourselves by verbally
and nonverbally telling other people something about who we are" (233). Norman's self–concept is
that of a dour old man waiting to die, and this is how he presents himself. He views himself as a
patriarch – a man worthy of respect. His inclination and habit is to keep himself hidden away from
others.
A "Johari Window" (239–240) would be an interesting tool for analyzing
Norman's personal presentation and disclosure processes. Our textbook explains the Johari Window
as having "four kinds of information about your self that play a part in your communicating" (240).

On The Golden Pond Reflection

  • 1. On The Golden Pond Reflection On November 4th 2017, I went to Rex Mathes Auditorium , West Des Moines, Iowa for watching the drama On the Golden Pond. The theatre group which performed was from Tallgrass Theatre Company. Tallgrass theatre is all volunteer based. The stage and lighting were all set when I entered inside the auditorium. This was my first drama watching experience in Iowa. On the Golden Pond by Ernest Thompson is a story about an old couple, Ethel and Norman Thayer, who spend their each summer on a lake Golden Pond, in the far northern New England. But this summer their daughter Chelsea is going to visit them, who lives in California. I liked how the stage was done , it was very relevant to the title On the golden pond. They had used wooden house/room with wooden stairs, boat paddles, fishing rod and photo frames. The lake house was giving feeling of summer. After arriving to the house , ethel notices loons calling on the lake. She was so happy that they are welcoming them home. This was feeling of happiness, and I think it was very creative. The drama also try to make up relationship between Father and daughter. Early in the play, Norman starts making fun about his death in jokes and offhand comments. He talks about living long and preparing for celebrating his last birthday. In one way, he seems to have a healthy attitude about his death, but, in another, his unpleasant joking makes one wonder whether he is trying too hard to maintain that act. There was humor ... • 5. Essay Summary of Thoreau Synopsis Economy: This is the first chapter and also the longest by far. Thoreau begins by outlining his project: a two–year and two–month stay at a crude cabin in the woods near Walden Pond. He does this, he says, in order to illustrate the spiritual benefits of a simplified lifestyle. He easily supplies the four necessities of life (food, shelter, clothing, and fuel). He meticulously records his expenditures and earnings, demonstrating his understanding of "economy," as he builds his house and buys and grows food. For a home and freedom, he spends a mere $25. Complementary Verses: This chapter consists entirely of a poem, "The Pretensions of Poverty," by seventeenth–century English poet Thomas Carew. The poem criticizes those who ... Following is a description of the sounds audible from his cabin: the church bells ringing, carriages rattling and rumbling, cows lowing, whip–poor–wills singing, owls hooting, frogs croaking, and cockerels crowing. Solitude: Thoreau rhapsodizes about the beneficial effects of living solitary and close to nature. He loves to be alone, for "I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude," and he is never lonely as long as he is close to nature. He believes there is no great value to be had by rubbing shoulders with the mass of humanity. Visitors: Thoreau writes about the visitors to his cabin. Among the 25 or 30 visitors is a young Canadian woodchopper, whom Thoreau idealizes as approaching the ideal man, and a runaway slave, whom Thoreau helps on his journey to freedom in Canada. The Bean–Field: Thoreau relates his efforts to cultivate two and a half acres of beans. He plants in June and spends his summer mornings weeding the field with a hoe. He sells most of the crop, and his small profit of $8.71 covers his needs. The Village: Thoreau visits the small town of Concord every day or two to hear the news, which he finds "as refreshing in its way as the rustle of the leaves." Nevertheless, he fondly but rather contemptuously compares Concord to a gopher colony. In late summer, he is arrested for refusing to pay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Erickson's Psychological Stages In The Film On Golden Pond In this movie titled "On golden Pond" it represents the lives of an old couple Norman and Ethel as well as their family. As the movie progresses we are introduced to their daughter as well as her new husband, Billy and Billy Ray Jr. who are all at different developmental stages in Erickson's Psychological stages. Which the movie and the actors do a superb job at showing information through their actions and as a result makes it easier to determine what stage they are in. To begin with the characters that are first introduced are Norman and Ethel. Who are both getting towards the end of their lives because they are kind of old and are done working. Which is the final stage of in Erickson's model called Integrity vs. Despair. Which is something that Norman has a hard time dealing with throughout most of the movie. He seems to feel like he can still work and wants to find a Job. Even though he was previously a professor he does not feel completely satisfied with his life. He also seems to fear the idea of death as he does not want to be seen as old and wants to act like he is still young hence the reason why he wants to get a job. • 11. Stages Of Development In Eric Erikson's On Golden Pond When assessing the stage of developments, my personal favorite is the adolescent years. Mainly, because that is the age gap that I remember the most because it was so tough and challenging. When thinking about the adolescent years, my favorite theorists to utilize is Erik Erikson. I particularly like his stages because they are very clear and precises about the negatives and positives of each stage. So, after watching On Golden Pond, I have chosen to reflect of the Character Billy. Billy is a thirteen year old boy, so according to Erikson, he is an adolescent, going through Identity versus Role Confusion (website). To begin with, an adolescent is leaving the stage of complete dependency of parents, and entering a world of wanting to do things on their own. In the process of wanting to do things on their own, an adolescent is also trying to find out who they are in this world. The adolescent learns their identity through exploration of themselves and their boundaries (website). Billy chooses to find his identity by appearing cooler than he really is. When talking to Norman, who is significantly older than him, Billy refers to the girls at home and how he likes to make out with them. He uses youthful language such as "sucking face" and "cruising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Often times if an adolescent wants to fit in, or figure out who they are, they may choose to reflect people they admire (notes). In Billy's instance, he chose to admire and mirror Norman. Norman is the elderly man who ends up taking Billy under his wing, which results in them bonding. By the end of the movie, Billy had began to reflect Norman in his mannerisms, his language and his toughness. In a fishing scene in the movie, Billy gets a huge fish and directs Norman to get the net. Billy says, "Get the net Norman, get it in gear turkey" (movie). This is quite humorous because scenes before, this would be something identical to what Norman would have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. John Thoreau Summary 8 – 7 – 17 Visitors I was startled at the beginning of the chapter by Thoreau's confession that he loves society, despite him previously saying that he did not like company, making me think even the most introverted have a longing for connection. I enjoyed the part where Thoreau talks about risk. It made sense to me when he states that as long as someone is alive, there is always the danger that he will die. I have contemplated this before, that there is no way to truly be safe, so we must be confident in the risks we take. For example, the majority of people in the US drive almost every day, and driving is very dangerous, having killed a large amount of people. Thoreau highly regards frankness in conversation, and he says about one of his visitors who is truthful that "our intercourse might go forward to something better than the intercourse of sages." I personally agree with him. I'd much rather prefer someone to be honest with me than to tell me lies that are meant to please me. However, I do not think it is always the best idea to be frank, because there are many people who get easily offended by the truth. I always feel bad hiding the truth from someone to make them feel happy, but sometimes it is more practical to make that decision. Another thing Thoreau says which caught my attention was his observation of the positive originality that one of his visitors displays. Thoreau says that he was "thinking for himself and expressing his own opinion," a rare phenomenon, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Walden As A Mirror, Walden Reflections: Walden as a Mirror, Walden as a Lens When Henry David Thoreau went to Walden Pond on July 4, 1845, he had no way of knowing that 200 years later, Walden would be required reading for anyone with even a passing interest in American literature, environmental literature, or intentional living. But Walden is so much more than the story of one man's retreat into the woods to 'transact some private business.' Thoreau's disarming directness and naturalistic style aside, Walden not an incidental text. With extensive revisions, distilling a little over two years into one, every chapter, sentence and word of Walden has a purpose and place. Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo is credited with saying, 'Every block of stone has a statue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, aside from a brief reference to the cycle of the seasons, where Thoreau says that he lived 'a summer and a winter life; saw how [he] could let the years run off, buffet the winter through and see the spring come in,' this chapter gains seasonal association through the knowledge that Thoreau went to Walden in the summer. 'The Ponds' brings us explicitly into autumn progressing from 'a calm September afternoon,' to 'such a day in September or October,' to a November after 'the severe frosts have come.' 'The Pond in Winter' brings the seasonal theme into the title and finally the culmination of, 'Spring.' 'Where I Lived, and What I Lived For' begins Walden's central narrative. 'Economy' addresses the practicalities and the surface narrative, but 'Where I Lived, and What I Lived For' lays out the groundwork for the extended metaphor that serves as Walden's symbolic backbone. 'Time is but the stream I go a–fishing in, I drink at; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains. I would drink deeper; fish in the sky, whose bottom is pebbly with stars,' Thoreau tells us at the end of the chapter. This quote illustrates two concepts that recur again and again in Walden. First, the idea of water as simultaneously shallow and deep. Thoreau first proclaims that he can see the bottom of the 'stream' but then elaborates, implying that there is something beyond the ... • 17. Rhetorical Analysis On What I Lived For Within Henry David Thoreau's excerpt Where I Lived, and What I Lived For, he employs metaphors in his writing to inspire the reader to live deliberately and with purpose. Furthermore, his use of metaphors also serve as a critique of society. Thoreau aims to make the audience realize a deeper, more true meaning of life than is portrayed by much of society. A prominent extended metaphor in his excerpt is about the railroad. Thoreau uses the railroad metaphor to describe society's dependence upon industry and reflect their fast–paced and shallow lifestyle. Thoreau evinces a paradox of society when he says, "If we do not get out sleepers, and forge rails, and devote days and nights to the work, but go tinkering upon our lives to improve them, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, if they were to be complacent and stay home, there would be no need to build railroads or expand industry. These different views reflect the contradiction in society and in an individual's mind. People think that they always have to be moving and building and instituting some new technology that will somehow make us great and earn a spot in heaven. However, people end up hurting themselves with this mindset because they are selling themselves short of the full potential of life, which, according to Thoreau, is to live fully and deliberately. Thoreau is exposing that humans strive for superficial success through their complicated and expeditive routines of their everyday lives, but true success comes by improving one's own life. Later in the metaphor, Thoreau uses the train to point out oppression and manipulation done by society. He states, "We do not ride on the railroad; it rides upon us. Levels of Phosphorus and Nitrogen and how they affect the amount of Dissolved Oxygen Abstract: Humans often use fertilizers in order to increase product production and ensure a healthy crop. In recent years it has been found that large amounts of artificial nitrogen in fertilizer has been used to increase the overall crop rates, to meet the demands of the increased growth rates within the human population ( Zhang, Wang, and Wu 2014). Based on these findings we were lead to question why or if increased levels of fertilizer impair aquatic ecosystems. Therefore we conducted research to find the correlation with increased levels of fertilizer and algae production. To conduct our research we obtained three samples from Dolese Pond, and within two of these samples fertilizer was added. After the fertilizer was added, measurements of dissolved oxygen, within each sample, were then taken over a course of four weeks. Our results offered that within the initial measurements the control held the least amount of dissolved oxygen while the sample with the added 10 mL of fertilizer yielded the highest amounts of dissolved oxygen. Dissolved oxygen concentrations need to be maintained within bodies of water due to the fact that this oxygen is needed to support life while preserving the health for the overall aquatic environment (Bailey and Ahmadi 2014). Introduction: The process of eutrophication is responsible for around one–half of the damaged lake ecosystems and around 60% of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His most famous book is about his experience while staying on the Walden Pond. He named the book Walden. In Walden, he stated a lot of his most famous views and beliefs. His views were authentic and impactful. He believed that a person doesn't need all the latest and fanciest technology to live an excellent life. He thinks that having enough to get by is all a person needs. Thoreau states three major beliefs in this book. • 23. On Golden Pond Essay One can't help but to draw links to the aging process when watching the three times Oscar winning movie On Golden Pond. In Mark Rydell's On Golden Pond, we encounter a couple in the middle of dealing with the anxieties and hardship of moving through the latter part of their life cycle. The older actors played by Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn demonstrates different levels of activity, age stratification, continuity, and disengagement theory in their lives. Activity Theory argues that the more active a people are the more likely they are to be satisfied with like (Moody & Sasser, 2015). On Golden Pond shows how Norman over comes his growing thoughts, anger and fear of growing old and finally death. Growing old is process and everyone has to find our own way. • 25. Is The Difference Between Henry David Thoreau And E. B. White Walden Pond, located in Concord, Massachusetts, was a place of inspiration for two well–known authors, Henry David Thoreau and E.B. White. Although, they wrote about the same place, their experiences were a century apart. Thoreau visited the lake in 1854 where technology still wasn't as advanced as it was in 1939 when White visited the historical site leading to a different feel for the place. The authors' style of approaching the view of the lake has both similar and different effects when using point of view, imagery, and logos. In comparison, Thoreau and White use the first person point of view in their writings, but in contrast they do not have same writing style. Thoreau writes about his surroundings and writes with serenity. With many details he describes how the forest brings calm to your soul and you feel connected to God and there is nothing to really care for. He writes without a real purpose, it seems as if he is rambling to the audience about his thoughts and feelings indicating them that they should live in simplicity. Thoreau's main message in the story was that humans are supposed to live a simple life and that getting closer to nature would help the human race reach that simplicity in life. He compares us as "mad ants" that are always busy, rushing and we always have something to do. Thoreau goes into details when he describes the mountains and the morning dew and his morning routines and with the vivid vision he connects it all back to serenity. White, on the other hand, uses imagery to describe how technology has advanced since Thoreau had been there. He informs Thoreau that Walden Pond had become the states property and there are signs all over the site such as "no swimming in the pond" and that the pond now had water fountains and people would take their boats to the ... Smith). But this picturesque local park is not as pure as it seems, the small local reservoir has many unhealthy ecological problems hidden below the surface of the water. Catchable–sized rainbow trout are defined as being between eleven and fifteen inches. He stated that the main purpose of Canyon lake was for fun, entertainment, and recreation (Mike Kintigh, Game Fish and Parks). This is obviously true due to the fact of the popularity of canyon lake. Alternatively, to those who support the clean up of Canyon Lake, the price is a trivial factor in the grand scheme. Proponents of revitalizing the reservoir argue that cleaning the lake would positively affect the health of the lake, the recreation of the park, and even the revenue of surrounding businesses. Many of the problems plaguing this body of water can be with a few simple steps. The water testing showed many detrimental environmental effects. Measurements of Canyon Lake were done using a classroom set of water testing chemicals. To Thoreau, Nature and God are at once synonymous and interconnected: "Next to us the grandest laws are continually being executed. Next to us is not the workman we have hired, with whom we love so well to talk, but the workman whose work we are." (175) Thoreau believes in a creator god, a living god that makes of "Nature" his home. Thoreau feels "Nature" is a divine space: a space where man is able to feel close to his god, a space where man is able to appreciate his god's favors and "Nature" is the space where man can embrace the god within himself. • 33. Walden Location Essay In Thoreau's novel, Walden, the reader is introduced to Thoreau's world and how it is greatly impacted by location. Thoreau begins his project by moving away from civilization and searching for a place to live. He finds his temporary home at Walden Pond, where he starts with few resources and little outside inputs. Thoreau even has to borrow the axe that he uses to cut down trees to make his home for the next two years. Thoreau asserts that his experiment, moving to Walden Pond, is not permanent. Walden Pond is, however, the foundation precept of how location impacts one's way of life. The place one live shapes the way one live and how one interact with the world around oneself. Thoreau is content with the place he lives and becomes one with the nature that surrounds him. Thoreau makes use of the land and nature around him at Walden Pond. He plants two and a half acres of beans that he farms. This shows that Thoreau is adaptive and learns to work with nature. The rain that comes and goes helps his crops grow. Thoreau relies on the place he lives to sustain himself. He trades his beans with others for food, and makes a profit off of the land on which he lives. • 35. Descriptive Essay On Fishing Lilia Benitez Mr. Young Zoology 7 December 2017 Fishing Everyone loves spending their time at the lake on a good summer evening with friends and family, whether they're having a camp fire and just circling it, cracking jokes, or fishing. People fish for a various of reasons, some may eat the fish (hey, basically free food!), just simply toss the fish back into the body of water which they got it from, or even just fish for the sake of it, and let the fishes die because of them being forgotten about. Whatever you're reasoning for fishing is, there is always going to be a bad side to it, even if your intentions are not to do so. There are number of reasons why people fish, reasons such as enjoying the feeling of catching huge fish, enjoying the scenery of the sunset, getting some relax time to themselves, getting to hang out with friends, competing with friends about who gets more fish or the bigger fish, and for survival (if you already have your license, and need something for dinner, there you are !). However, No one has really has put thought into how fishing may affect the environment of that body of water. Let's talk about what really goes on in ponds/lakes. Most large bodies of water here in Kansas consist of largemouth bass, blue gill, and channel catfish. These fishes all spawn when the water gets warm, so during spring or early summer, for the bass; 60–70 degrees, and for the catfish. 70–75 degrees. When these eggs are laid, the father fish protects the eggs and makes sure nothing happens to them. Lets say someone decides to go fishing at the time the father is protecting the eggs, the male fish will see the hook as a threat to the eggs and attack it. There you go, you got a catch! But do you really know what that means? Because you have caught the male fish, who's there to protect the eggs? The amount of eggs laid by these types of fish can be up to 500. There's a specific reason why it's the male protecting the egg and not the woman, the male is stronger and can protect the eggs from being eaten and can keep them warm better. Any who, because you caught the male protector, the eggs will all die because they will be exposed to the cold lake. That's 501 fish you costs the pond although you only ... "According to Erikson, the ego develops as it successfully resolves crisis that are distinctly social in nature. • 41. Options for Production Systems Applicable to IAAS There are four broad options for production systems applicable to IAAS, namely: farm dams; pond culture; tank culture, and cage–based culture. Production system design for any one integrated farming model is likely to fit into one of the following three categories: Extensive systems: characterized by ambient conditions, low stocking density and generally using existing infrastructure with little or no modification (e.g. farm dams) or management intervention (e.g. no supplementary feeding). Semi–intensive systems: usually occurs in modified/constructed ponds, cages or tanks under ambient conditions with moderate stocking densities requiring management of water exchange, water quality and feeding regimes. Intensive systems: high stocking density, high levels of capital investment and reliant on complete control of water quality and feeding regimes under largely controlled environmental conditions. Ponds can vary greatly in size and depth, depending on site characteristics, but are generally 0.1–2.0 ha in area, 0.5–2.0 m deep and may have a sloping bottom from 0.5 m to 1.5–2.0m deep, draining to a harvesting sump (Ogburn et al. 1995). For this project the pond type will be discussed, as the fish farm we selected is pond culture. There are different reasons affecting to the choice of the selection of farm. • 43. Analysis Of The Circumplex Model In On Golden Pond The Circumplex Model: Adaptability and Flexibility Throughout On Golden Pond, it is apparent that Chelsea, Norman, and Ethel are rigidly enmeshed. According to Olson's circumplex model, rigidly enmeshed families have authoritarian leadership, strict discipline, roles rarely change, there is too little change. Additionally, enmeshment in families is illustrated by very high closeness, very high loyalty, high dependency, and a lack of individuality (Sanders & Bell, 2011). Although Chelsea is distant with her family in the number of visits it is an artificial distance of time and space. They are strongly emotionally entangled as demonstrated through the ability of the family to emotionally affect one and other. Slightly like the characters in On Golden Pond, the family in Stepmom appear to be chaotically enmeshed. The circumplex model claims families who are chaotic present with a lack of leadership, erratic discipline, dramatic role shifts, and too much change (Sanders & Bell, 2011). Chaos is present in the structure of the two living environments of the children: one environment is structured and the other one is disorderly. This leads to confusion for the children because the system lacks consistency. Enmeshment is personified through the children's emotional fusion with their mother. When Jackie is upset with Isabel, the children are upset with Isabel. The children and the mother's emotions are intertwined. On the other hand, Rita slightly contrasts the two families above as she appears to be rigidly disengaged instead of enmeshed. Rita and Denny are not intimately close. This is illustrated as Rita responds to a question by saying, "loyalty? I [have] you know, I [have] tried to explain it to my husband ... I think he [is] thick" (Gilbert, 1983). Rita's family lacks the flexibility to change. People get married and have kids. There is no self– exploration, enlightenment, and adaptability is absent. The Concrete Content and Abstract Process Norman characterized several content and process issues throughout On Golden Pond. While observing the ice cutters at Walden Pond, Thoreau comments on human effort to exploit nature, arguing that the actions are in vain as nature regenerates much faster than it can be threatened, which is very debatable due to the knowledge that there is only a finite amount of resources on the planet. Thoreau thoroughly believes in his idea of self–reliance and states that there are only four necessities that should determine one's ability to survive: food, shelter, clothing, and fuel, many of which he believes nature provides graciously. • 57. Analysis Of Henry David Thoreau 's ' Walden ' Henry David Thoreau will go down in history as one of the greatest influential writer's and philosophers in American history. Not only was he a smart and intelligent man, but he had such wisdom and determination when he looked at every aspect of life. Thoreau was just an ordinary individual from Concord, which helped the readers relate to him on a more personal level when they read his work. In Thoreau's Walden, he wanted the reader to understand that you should live life more simple, connect with nature so you can connect with God, and live your life working hard so you do not have to solely rely on anyone. Thoreau moved and lived in the woods for two years to simply live simpler. Before Thoreau moved into the woods, he had been living in Concord, Massachusetts. "Young Thoreau, then in his late 20s, had tried to live as others lived – as "a schoolmaster, a private tutor, a surveyor, a gardener, a farmer, a house painter, a carpenter, a mason, a day–laborer, a pencil–maker, a glass–paper maker, a writer, and sometimes a poetaster," by his own reckoning – but had found those careers wanting. "The mass of men," he wrote, "lead lives of quiet desperation." He was determined not to be one of them." (Christian Science Monitor) Thoreau wanted to find his place in the world, he wanted to find his purpose. When I was in fifth grade my parents divorced but because both of them loved the neighborhood so much my mom kept our house and my dad built a new home about three miles away but still in the same neighborhood. I use to think this was strange that my parents were divorced but still lived in the same subdivision, as I got older I realized it was because they both shared the same love for the Lake and wanted their children to be raised by the water. This neighborhood is special for many reasons, it is a private neighborhood, there is many miles of trails for ATVs, a private pool, and most importantly there is the actual lake arrowhead lake (Buhl Lake). ... • 61. Attitudes Toward Conversations In Walden, By Henry David... In this excerpt from his book Walden, Henry David Thoreau discusses having visitors over at his house, how the size of the room and the distance between each other affects their conversations, and the fact that the outdoors is the best place to have a conversation. Throughout the passage, he uses various literary devices that give extra meaning to his words and help to explain his attitude towards his visitors. Thoreau uses literary devices such as irony and metaphor throughout the passage to develop his apathetic attitude towards his visitors. Thoreau uses irony to develop his apathetic attitude towards visitors. Towards the beginning of the passage he says, "I am ready enough to fasten myself like a bloodsucker for the time to any full–blooded man that comes in my way" and "I had three chairs in my house" (lines 1–5). It is ironic that Thoreau seems so eager and willing to have visitors at his house, but at the same time he doesn't even try to make his visitors comfortable (which in theory should attract more people to his ... In the middle of the passage he says, "If we are merely loquacious and loud talkers, then we can afford to stand very near together... but if we speak reservedly and thoughtfully, we want to be farther apart" (lines 32–34). This metaphor compares being physically close in a room with other people to being close to them on a personal level, as well as compares being physically spread apart in a room to having enough "space" to get to know their ideas. In other words, this is a metaphor that compares a real room to an intellectual one. Thoreau doesn't care about understanding the feelings of other people and getting to know his visitors on a personal level, but rather he cares about understanding their ideas and getting some kind of intellectual gain from his visitors. This is apathetic, or indifferent due to lack of energy or concern, because Thoreau doesn't have enough concern for his visitors to want to get to know them at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. On Golden Pond Mark Rydell's "On Golden Pond" is a drama that emphasizes the stages people of various ages endures. Utilizing Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Stages as learned in Dr. Malone's class, each of the main characters can be placed within a stage and their age–related crises analyzed. As this film is a drama, it was relatable to the audience, prompting personal reactions as well as implementing life examples of some of the theories studied in Malone's class. Perhaps the most significant character, Norman Thayer is a force to be reckoned with. A grumpy old miser, Norman may appear at times to not fully be capable of taking care of himself; however, he is still very sharp. Norman demonstrates Erikson's last stage, termed Late Adulthood, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As beautiful as life is, it can be hard to watch someone get older. When our bodies do not work the way they used to, people feel betrayed. I grew very close to some of my customers and when one of them was sent to a retirement home so he could be cared for it was very sad. However, now thinking about this was the best decision to make. Ethel Thayer also is in Erikson's psychosocial stage Late Adulthood, dealing with the crisis of integrity versus despair. Unlike Norman, Ethel is very satisfied with her life and what the audience sees is a woman of integrity. For sometime I thought Ethel might still be in the stage of middle adulthood, but instead I think she is just a very well–adjusted older woman. Ethel likes nothing more to be outside collecting strawberries or watching the loons. Ethel makes strong attempts to ensure her loved ones are satisfied with their own lives. She has a hard time understanding why Norman and Chelsea cannot be as satisfied and reprimands both of them. In a dramatic confrontation, Ethel points out to Chelsea that regretting childhood events "doesn't have to ruin your life". Although she may not be as grumpy as her husband, Ethel worries about death jut as he does. Following Norman's heat attack, both Norman and Ethel realize they have precious time left together. Ethel reminds me very much so of my maternal grandmother. Even Ethel and Norman's relationship resembles my maternal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. David Grusin's On Golden Pond David Grusin is the composer for On Golden Pond. He was the composer for The Graduate and The Goonies which are films that I recognized but have not yet seen. I selected On Golden Pond because I had not heard of the movie beforehand. The 1980s was full of electronic music; however, this film featured no electronic pop. The film is only instrumental, and due to the fact, the film focuses on an older couple dealing with growing older and their time with a young man named Billy, I believe the score is appropriate. When looking at the theme from The Goonies, the use of piano and strings are apparent in both films. From the beginning of the film, the score was a peaceful piano piece that went along with the scenery. It was gentle and non–threatening. There is a flute, or other woodwind, that joins the piano, and this is when a car is seen driving by. Later strings join the ensemble and the music all continues to be soft. This reassured me that the movie would not be dark or overwhelming. The theme music and film's focus on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This noise is natural and allows the scene to seem realistic, but the music returns when the man goes into the house and reflects on the items in the household. Throughout the film this transition from nature to On Golden Pond's theme occurs often. This changeover generally indicated a change in scene or a resolution to a conflict. There were few moments of conflict where the music fills with brass sounds and takes on a tense feeling. For example, when the main character goes for a walk in the woods, I appreciate that the music is heard throughout his walk, it sounds like a harp, other strings, and woodwind instruments. The audience can hear the leaves crunching and birds; however, when the music becomes faster and takes on lower pitches, one truly feels the man's stress of becoming lost in the forest. Additionally, the shift from soft to loud occurs frequently throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. The first part of the movie exposes Norman's fixation on his age and pending death. From his confrontation with the kids, while refueling his boat to his efforts about getting a job, ... • 69. A Multi Scale Optimization Framework CO2 is an important greenhouse gas (GHG) and emission of CO2 to the atmosphere needs to be reduced in order to mitigate climate change. It is imperative to device ways of proper CO2 utilization and storage. CO2 can be sequestered geologically as well as there are other ways of CO2 utilization which can be economically viable in places where geological storage is not the most optimal solution. In the present study, the primary focus is on the integration potential of two GHG abatement options, which are geological sequestration of CO2 and biological sequestration of CO2 via microalgae growth, harvest and conversion to bioproducts. There are several ways of microalgae conversion to an array of products, as discussed in the previous sections. The present study aims to quantify the techno–economic tradeoffs and optimize the entire supply–chain of CO2 utilization to ensure the most economically feasible alternative of CO2 usage. A multi–scale optimization framework is proposed. The mathematical framework is provided in Figure 2. The model takes into account the design of pipeline network for CO2 transport, different processing routes for microalgae conversion as well as CO2 geological storage. A case–study is considered to assess the optimal design of GHG capture, storage and/or utilization for the state of Texas in United States. Such an effort will help inform decision and policy makers the optimal pathway of CO2 storage and utilization procedures for a particular location. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Character Analysis: On Golden Pond Classic Essay Imagine– you are sitting upon an old dock at the edge of a pond as the evening sun begins to set. A captivating ornamentation of light dances off the water as the sun slowly disappears behind an overbearing mountain. You become mesmerized by the mixed celebration of the faint yellow, baby blue, and champagne pink lights that shine across the ripples of the water. When suddenly, there is the faint cry of a loon in the distance. This cry startles you and brings you from that tranquil state back to the harrowing vapidity of reality. You try your best to ignore the loon as his noisy laugh continues to mock you from across the pond. You immediately want to turn to annoyance, but you instead decide to embrace the loon after realizing that he is time and you are Norman Thayer. You are the character from the play "On Golden Pond," written by Ernest Thompson, who lost their charismatic outlook on life to the turning of time. A vast array of critics call "On Golden ... Upon the introduction to the main characters, it is revealed that the play encompasses the standard pattern of social behavior that is expected by American society. This is exhibited through the fact that Norman and Ethel are a straight couple who have been married for many years. It is traditional in American society for a man to marry a woman. Same–sex marriage has slowly gained acceptance in the twenty–first century; however, those who choose to marry someone of the same gender still receive discrimination and are often looked down upon by certain members of society. The play highlights this intolerance as Norman repeatedly mocks his two neighbors, who are a same–sex couple, in a joking manner. There are some people who get both disparities of mentally and physically impaired that will led into depression due to aging process of their body. Even though, the forgetfulness is a common among older adults, we as healthcare providers must evaluate altered mental status of the patients. "The evaluation and management of altered mental status are broad and require careful history and physical examination to eliminate life–threatening situations"(Patti & Dulebohn, 2017). Therefore, it is very important to recognize the importance of difference between normal age–related symptoms and developing new health problems that can arise in this specific population. As elders get older their memory lapses it frustrating to them leading them to be more worried about changes in their memory. Nurses have a unique capability to promote a cognitive health and determine the possibilities of potential cases of the impairment in elders. The movie "On Golden Pond" Mr. Norman was a perfect example and showed that his symptoms were interfering with his everyday live when he almost burns down the house with fire, calling Bill by his daughter's name Chelsea and getting lost in on the lake. • 75. An Urban Body Of Water An urban body of water is one that is located near an urban area, usually with high population and industry. These water bodies are often times very polluted and mismanaged because a society benefits by using it as their dumping grounds or local governments do not have the finances to improve it. Many times there is a lack of awareness among a society that these acts of mass pollution are even taking place. In this paper I will compare The Duwamish River in Seattle to Lake Nicaragua in Nicaragua. It does not matter where an urban body of water is located in the world; if a city, industry or urban population are able to pollute a large water body with little to no penalty they will do it until they are punished or need to reap its ... I found it interesting because its contribution to its local community is so large that I found it upsetting that it was among the most polluted in the country. Another reason I chose this river was because it's polluted to such a high degree that I was curious to see what measure have or could be put in place to make it more sustainable and cleaner for all to use. Lake Nicaragua is an urban lake found in the developing country of Nicaragua. It is the largest freshwater lake in Central America and is special because it is home to rare freshwater sharks. Its one of the worlds 40 largest lakes and its roots are tectonic. Over thirty different rivers flow into Lake Nicaragua and it is tideless with daily changes in sea level. There are over 30 islands located in the lake, which are home to many fruits, animals and inhabitants. The lake is home to many fisheries that export their fish to places around the world. Unfortunately, the surrounding areas of the lake are experiencing a growth in population and trade so the lake is being affected by water pollution (LakeNet p. 1). I chose to research this lake because I found it disturbing how such a large and popular lake could be so neglected. The lake surrounds so much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Norman's Interpersonal Communication in the Movie, On... Norman's Interpersonal Communication in the Movie, On Golden Pond EXAMPLE The movie On Golden Pond is a fantastic vehicle with which to consider six facets of interpersonal communication. The main character of the movie, Norman, provides for a multifaceted study in relationships, both with his "self" and with others. I have chosen to focus this paper on several aspects of Norman's interpersonal communication. On Golden Pond is a fascinating study in the discovery of Norman's need to communicate with those he cares about in new ways. Our textbook defines communication being interpersonal "when the people involved are contacting each other as persons" (4). On Golden Pond is rich with excellent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the mail carrier attempts to communicate with Norman, Norman will not let down his guard and connect interpersonally with him. During the movie we learn that Norman is actually quite capable of moving towards the interpersonal side of the communication continuum. Norman develops a friendship with Billy, a teenager staying with Norman and Ethel for a month. Throughout the movie Norman stretches his normally closed communication patterns as he grows to care for Billy. Evidently Norman is able to transcend his old pattern of shutting everyone out. He learns that he must be willing to disclose a bit about himself if he wants a relationship with Billy. Our text defines self presentation as "the process of revealing or disclosing ourselves by verbally and nonverbally telling other people something about who we are" (233). Norman's self–concept is that of a dour old man waiting to die, and this is how he presents himself. He views himself as a patriarch – a man worthy of respect. His inclination and habit is to keep himself hidden away from others. A "Johari Window" (239–240) would be an interesting tool for analyzing Norman's personal presentation and disclosure processes. Our textbook explains the Johari Window as having "four kinds of information about your self that play a part in your communicating" (240). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
