My Favorite Day Of The Whole Year Essay
Multicolored lights twinkle on the tiny boughs of an evergreen tree while presents spill out from
under it in every direction. Steamy, delicious–smelling dishes cover every available surface. A
manger scene, its figures oddly displaced by little hands, is strewn across the table. The air is so
warm that I kicked my shoes into a corner within minutes of entering the house. Laughter and warm
voices are ringing in my ears, but they somehow feel distant to me. As my five–year–old cousin
darts past my feet, I find myself retreating to the bathroom, fingers fumbling with the door lock,
shaky legs carrying me into the dry, vacant shower while jerky arms pull the curtain closed around
me. It's Christmas Day; it should be my favorite day of the whole year. It's Christmas Day, and I find
myself retreating from it all. It's Christmas Day, and my whole family has gathered together at my
cousin's house. Well, not my whole family. My dad is hours away, spending Christmas with my half
brother and his family. "Christmas" and "family" have meant many things to me over the years, but
the one thing they have always meant to me is mom and dad, Christie and Sarah, and me, all
together. This definition is one of the many things that has been ripped away since my mom asked
my dad to leave the house many months ago in May. It was not supposed to be this way. My parents
were supposed to be able to fix their problems and become the model of a loving Christian marriage
that I always longed for. But

Essay An Analysis of “American Pie”
American Pie" is an impressionistic ballad by Don Mclean which features unique and intriguing
lyrics. It has imaginative changes in tempo, vocal delivery and instrumentation, and imparts a wide
range of emotions ranging from pure joy, to melancholy and despair. The song takes the listener on
an autobiographical journey through the turbulent 1960's with references to the events that shaped
the era. Don Mclean was enshrined in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 2004 for his work on
"American Pie" (Don McLean: Songwriters Hall of Fame Inauguration). With its use of formal
structure, allusions, and figurative language, the song, "American Pie", has many poetic qualities.
The formal structure of "American Pie" allows Don Mclean to use multiple ... Show more content

Although the formal structure of this song is quite good, perhaps the use of allusion is one of the
most important poetic devices found in "American Pie". An allusion is a reference to a famous
person, place or thing. In the first verse Mclean writes "But February made me shiver with ever
paper I'd deliver". This allusion refers to the plane crash on February 3, 1959 that killed Buddy
Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper, J.P. Richardson. Another famous allusion in this song is
found in the fifth verse, Mclean makes a reference to the holy trinity, he writes, "And the three men I
admired the most: The father, son, and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last train to the coast, the day
the music died". This allusion is particularly brilliant on the part of Don Mclean, because it allows
each individual person to use their imagination in order to interpret his allusion. This allusion has
multiple meanings, for an example if one analysis this allusion in the context of music, Mclean was
obviously referring once again to the death of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper, J. P.
Richardson. However one could also analyze this allusion in the context of the political leaders of
the 1960's and thinks that Mclean was alluding to the deaths of President John F. Kennedy, Martin
Luther King, and Robert Kennedy.
In addition to formal structure and allusions Don Mclean uses Figurative language, such as
metaphors,

Allegory of American Pie by Don McLean
A Piece of the "Pie"
Ask anyone what was the defining moment in the rock history of the 1960s was and all you will get
is a one word answer: Woodstock. The three day rock festival that defined an era was only one of
many music festivals of the
'60s. But Woodstock has come to symbolize, "an era of peaceful, free– loving, drug– taking
hippie youth, carefree before harsher realities hit..."
(Layman 40). The Woodstock festival ended a century filled with many metamorphoses of
rock'n'roll, from the era of pop music to the rebirth of folk music to the invention of acid rock. But
some cynics say that rock'n'roll died with the death of Buddy Holly before the 60s even began.

Holly was on tour with a collection of performers, and he wanted to fly to the next stop instead of
taking the bus.
He chartered a plane and a pilot to fly him and two others to Fargo, North
Dakota (Verse 1). Originally it was to be Holly, Waylon Jennings, and
Tommy Allsup. But J.P. Richardson ("The Big Bopper") talked Jennings into giving him
his seat and Allsup lost his seat to Richie Valens ("La
Bamba") on a coin toss (Jordan). The pilot, Roger Peterson, was a visual pilot, and not
certified to fly an instrument plane flight. But on the night of
February 3, 1959 the plane when up during a flurry. The pilot lost control and while he believed he
was steering up, the plane went straight down.
When the plane crashed all four men died instantly (Jordan). The day that the plane crash henceforth
became known as "The day the music died".
The chorus in American Pie is the main theme of the song. American Pie is the pure American art of
rock and roll. The Chevy is the icon of America.
The levee is the source of music and since the decline of original rock and roll, there is no water (or
talent) in the levee: it's dry. "This'll be the day that
I die," was taken from a Buddy Holly song entitled "That'll be the Day" and a line
in the chorus read, "That'll be the day that I die," (Kulawiec).
The next verse of American Pie, McLean demonstrates what happened after Holly's death. The birth

As you can see, the weather was snowing and foggy yesterday, which is poor condition for airplanes

plane was headed to Hector Airport, North Dakota. Because of the poor weather, it caused a 21 years

Don McLean sang the song "American Pie" very well. His voice is crystal clear when he sang this
song, and it sounds like he is pouring his heart into the song. Don McLean has a very dynamic
voice, which makes the song both very simple and complex. He makes his voice quiet on serious
verses and adds energy to the song, which makes it a very unique song. The instruments that play
during the song are a piano, a drum set, and guitars. The music behind his voice is both simple and
complex, and the music compliments his voice very well. When Don McLean sings the song, it

Summary Of Pacific Distance By Joan Didion
In her essay "Pacific Distances" author Joan Didion writes about the randomness and lack of
meaning in the car culture of southern California. Her implied thesis is that people in Los Angeles
spend their time "in transit," leading unreal lives without meaning or a sense of connectedness to
anything, even other people. She conveys her thesis to the reader through expressive writing and
unusual word choices, and she employs description and narration to create a sense of emotional
deadness and random motion.
Didion's primary purpose is expressive. The personal pronoun does not appear until the last few
sentences of her essay, but when it finally does we realize that the narrator has been Didion herself,
driving through Los Angeles on streets "devoid of meaning to the driver," in which "[c]onventional
information is missing." Although the emotions presented in expressive writing are usually intense,
Didion gives the reader a sense of her emotional deadness; her lack of emotion is itself an emotional
state, and she presents that emotionless quality to the reader in such a way that even the "I" is
suppressed until the essay's last few sentences.
Secondarily, Didion's purpose is literary. To some extent her language and the way she presents her
thesis are at least as important as what she has to say. Her unusual word choices help the reader to
understand the strangeness of life in Los Angeles: Some people feel "a seductive unconnectedness"
in the city, while in other people the

American Pie Rhetorical Devices
Media has been a vital element to American entertainment since its commencement. This
entertainment comes in all varieties, whether it is film, commercials, music or general consumer ads.
Either way, they are all used to engage or encourage the reader or viewer to feel a certain way.
Music has always been a catalyst for human beings since the first caveman started tapping his feet in
a rhythmic pattern. Music can be used to express any feeling a person can have about any subject
they might think about. It can be used to describe the ideals of an era or time frame; just look at
music over the last one hundred plus years. No matter what, there is usually always some sort of
symbolism or deeper meaning that the songwriter is trying to get to the listener. It's no debate that
the music we listen to today is most definitely not the music the generation our grandparents or even
our parents listened to. The song "American Pie" by Don McLean, which released in 1971, is one of
the most analyzed songs in American pop culture history (Shuck). Standing as a story all on its own,
a simple analysis of the lyrics reveals allusions and metaphors in abundance. Analyzing these
allusions and metaphors exposes many rhetorical devices used by McLean.
A cultural revolution all in its own, the 1960's saw the rise and fall of many great civil rights leaders.

Holly Jolly Christmas Spirit
Everyone has always wondered how Santa delivers gifts to all of the children in one night. Truth is,
he isn't even the one who delivers them. It is the reindeer. The North Pole is a part of an alternate
universe where they travel through portals to bring the presents to everyone in one night. This is the
same alternate universe of monsters, superheroes, famous princes or princesses, characters in books,
greek gods and goddesses, and other figments of children's imaginations such as the tooth fairy or
the Easter bunny. The measure of time is drastically different, making it easy for them to do all of
this in one night. Every hour in human's time, is a day in reindeer's time. This year, something truly
terrible has happened. Someone has stolen the Holly jolly Christmas Spirit, and there is no way for
the reindeer to give the people presents. The Holly Jolly Christmas Spirit is what powers the portals
and allows the reindeer to travel between universes. Santa has put to use his two greatest reindeer,

I can't believe this!" Santa shrieks. "We must lock him up so he doesn't destroy something else." "I'll

this problem. They need to find a new source of energy to travel through the portal to the human
world. Perhaps, they could use someone else's Christmas spirit to travel to the human world. Donner
and Comet spent two days traveling across the snowy alps to where their location lies. They have
arrived in Whoville. Whoville is home to the most Christmas spirit filled place in any universe. If
they can collect enough energy for this Christmas, they will be able to travel to the human universe
which will collect even more Holly Jolly Christmas Spirit for the years to come. After traveling
home they now only have one day left. They rush to the town square to see reporters and chaos

American Pie
Music is a form of literature that can be used as an instrument to express an artist's feelings through
their lyrics about a particular situation or topic. In the song "American Pie", Don McLean expresses
his feelings on how the generation is changing and how the influence of music will "die" because of
a tragic event. The wordage and tone of McLean's lyrics are written in a negative manner but
represented in a positive and upbeat song. Don McLean's song, "American Pie", reveals three
significant feelings, which include death, fear of change, and his devout faith.
The main theme that is notable in Don McLean's song is death. Written in 1971,"American Pie"

Living through the sixties, McLean was able to express what he witnessed and how he felt. Death
was one of his major themes in his song. The deaths of three famous singers was a major let down in
the music world. It raised many questions as to who was going to take over the spotlight, and how
music will forever change. Change also played a significant role in McLean's song. Society at the
time was going through many changes that would form the United States into what it is today.
Dealing with the many notable deaths and the many changes going on in society, the people seemed
to have too much to handle and ultimately the breakdown of society began. McLean who was also
dealing with the struggles of the 60's was able to find a safe haven with God. He used his strong
faith to overcome the struggles. Overall Don McLean put a lot of time and effort into his song
"American Pie". He took the time and put together meaningful lyrics that became one of the most
famous songs in history. Works Cited

Charles Hardin Holley's Song American Pie
Charles Hardin Holley, or as we all know him, Buddy Holly was amongst the most influential
singer/songwriters of the rock and roll generation. He was a very popular artist. While traveling to
one of his concert venues, the plane he chartered unexpectedly crashed killing him and two other
mainstays of 50s rock and roll, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. It is this incident that drove Don
McLean to write the song American Pie which, to this day, remains one of the most widely talked
about and debated songs of all times. McLean left this song open for interpretation and while there
are many disputed details there is no doubt that this song is about how the death of Buddy Holly was
the symbolic end of not only "good" music but more importantly ... Show more content on

The Rolling Stones have now taken over from the Beatles as seen in the "Jack Flash" reference as
"Jumpin Jack Flash" is a Rolling Stone's song. McLean again turns a common saying on it's ear
when Jack sits on the candle stick rather than jumping over it. Society is falling down. When the
next verse says "Oh, and there we were all in one place A generation lost in space" McLean is
talking about the Rolling Stones concert at Altemont, and they were lost in space because everyone
was stoned. He then sings "no angel born in hell Could break that Satan's spell". Satan represents the
Rolling Stones whose song Sympathy for the Devil is a first person song from Lucifer. And the
angel is The Hells Angels, a very violent motorcycle gang, who were hired for concert security.
Naturally when fans bum rushed the stage the angels got violent in retaliation actually killing a man.
Satan or Jagger did not even notice the violence towards his fans. Society was at its lowest point
here, no one cared for one another or the country. Both society and music have veered as far as
possible from the simpler sweeter times of the 50s.
When McLean "met a girl who sang the blues" he "asked her for some happy news but she just
smiled and turned away". This girl is said to be Janice Joplin. McLean has a small glimmer of hope
that there is some remnants of good within music and society but when he asked her for good news
she turned and walked away, crushing his hopes of a better society. When McLean goes back to the
record store where he had listened to the music of his past, the owner replied that they don't play it
anymore further showing that the era that he wants back will never

How Did Buddy Holly Influence Rock And Roll Music
During the late 1950s, Buddy Holly, one of the most influential rock'n'roll artists, was killed in a
fatal plane crash. He was an American singer and songwriter who produced some of the most
distinctive and influential work in rock music. The songs he co–wrote and performed with his
backing band the Crickets remain as fresh and potent today as when recorded on primitive
equipment in New Mexico half a century ago: That'll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Not Fade
Away. His influence on the development of pop music was incalculable, particularly in the UK.
Peculiarly, Holly and his bandmates, Richie Valens and "Big Bopper", were underrated in America
and were questioned whether they were the greatest loss to music. As Terry Grimley exclaimed,

The address to the term, "Miss American Pie" references a plane that went down killing singer
Buddy Holly. The line, "The quartet practiced in the park," refers to the famous pop group Beatles
who became famous shortly after the death of Holly. All of the other symbolism in this song
revolves events that happened around that time of Holly's death. McLean uses informal irony in the
tone of the song to convey this deep symbolism. Because of the depth, there is a big controversy on
what some of the words represent. Some people even think "Miss American Pie" represents the civil
rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.. One example of McLean's use of irony is in the story about
Holly. The irony comes from how he describes when Holly was younger, "he borrowed a coat from
James Dean," and then many years later he was a famous singer. McLean uses a subjective point of
view as he uses his interpretations, comments, and judgments to appeal to pathos in this song.
McLean uses only two of the rhetorical appeals. Ethos is used when he describes the other singers
most people know about. "And while Lenin read a book on Marx," emphasizes ethos because Lenin
was a famous singer who people respect. Pathos was used throughout the whole piece especially
when he said "the lovers cried and the poets screamed." This quote describes the people's sadness
towards the death of Holly, which appeals to the listener in many emotional ways. He also uses

The song "American Pie', by Don McLean, was a dominate rock–and–roll hit in 1971. McLean
illustrates famous rock star artist and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1962 by
using rhetorical strategies. The different potential interpretations of this song made it one of the
most controversial songs from the 1970's. McLean was hitting home with many emotional
resonances defining moments in the recent American experiences. "American Pie" starts out
addressing McLean love for music in the 50's. During the 50's, music was a tool for getting people
off their feet and on to the dance floors. "And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those
people dance, and maybe they'd be happy for a while" (McLean). This verse symbolizes why he
loves to create and perform for his fans. McLean then goes on to mention his mentor Buddy Holly.
"But February made me shiver. With every paper, I'd deliver. Shocking news on the doorstep, I
couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried. When I read about his widowed bride. But
something touched me deep inside. The day the music died" (McLean). Buddy Holly died on
February 3, 1959, in a plane crash. There are two theories on why the song was called "American
Pie." It was rumored, "American Pie" was the name of the plane that took Buddy Holly life. Also,
someone refers it to a symbol of the beauty queen Miss America (Morgan). Mclean remembered the
paper boy delivering the morning paper and there on the front page, was the story of the death of
Buddy Holly. At the time Holly's wife was pregnant and soon had a miscarriage afterward. McLean,
he says he can't remember if he cried in the moment or not. All this was in the first few verses in
"American Pie." McLean incorporated these lines of imagery to help the listener picture his past
emotional experiences. I believe McLean wanted to paint a picture for his audience could relate to.
During these times it was tough for McLean. Not only did Buddy Holly die but also rock star
legends Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. For McLean music died for him and the rest of the
world.
"American Pie" not only pays tribute to three talented musicians but also

How Did Buddy Holly Influence Popular Music
Even Though Bob Dylan and Buddy Holly are both singer/song writers, their journeys have taken
them down completely different paths. One has had a long career in the industry and the other has
unfortunately has had a short career. Both have had wonderful and successful lives and are still well
known for what they accomplished with their music. Buddy Holly played rock 'n' roll for a few short
year but the music he recorded in that time has made a major and forever lasting impact on popular
music. Not only did he write his own music, but he was also the first to exploit advanced studio
techniques such as double–tracking, (rockhall.com). Bob Dylan on the other hand is a recognized
poet laureate of the rock 'n' roll era and the pre–eminent singer/songwriter of modern times. No
matter if he is singing topical folk songs, exploring rootsy rock and blues, or delivering one of his
abstract, allegorical compositions, he is always demonstrating a rare ability to reach listeners with
his lyrics, (rockhall.com).
Buddy Holly was born on September 7th, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. His birth name was Charles
Hardin Holley, he is the youngest out of four children. He got the name Buddy from his mother, who
felt his birth name was too big for a young boy. Holly learned to play the piano and the fiddle when
he was pretty young, and his brothers taught him how to play the guitar. After Buddy graduated

The Rock, Pop And Soul Reader By David Brackett
The articles that I chose to examine from the Rock, Pop and Soul Reader by David Brackett are
titled On Wax by Paul Whiteman and Mary Margaret McBride, and What Songs the Beatles Sang by
William Mann. These articles came from different time periods in which there was a need for
change in music. The artists discussed in these articles took a chance, and experimented to create a
new sound that the audience enjoyed. Other important similarities include the specific changes made
in the music, and what made the sound more popular. Despite the similarities and differences, these
articles have also taught me much about the history of rock and roll including; the effects of change
in music, and the imagination and creativity behind it. When comparing the articles, one can
determine that they are similar. On Wax looks at the introduction of new music and technology in
the 1920s that revolutionized the music industry. However, What Songs the Beatles Sang, looks at
the change in music during the time of the British Invasion, and why the Beatles were successful. In
On Wax¸ it stated that in the 1920s, there was change of instrumentation in nearly all orchestral
pieces (Whiteman and McBride, 11). This included the addition of the tuba replacing the double
basses, ordinary drums replacing banjo, and tympani and snare replacing the regular drum. These
additions created a muddy and fuzzed–up effect that listeners enjoy (Whiteman and McBride, 11).

Analysis Of The Song ' American Pie '
Bye, Bye,
When my brother and I were younger our dad used to play his records for us. The record player was
an ugly plastic box, situated in the corner of our then unfinished basement. More than anything else,
I remember him playing the song "American Pie"by Don McLean. To this day I can still sing the
majority of the lyrics of the eight and a half minute song from memory. According to my brother, we
were the ones repeatedly asking my dad to play it, but in my memory, it was always my dad just
playing it for us unprompted.
Something in the song awoke an exuberance in my brother, Spencer and I. We would jump and
dance on the couch during the fast parts, and sway and spin during the slow. The lyrics were
exciting, but also really tragic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are parts of American history that are shameful, tragic. The event that sparked the writing of
this song is one of those tragic moments. There are many parts of American history that I can't be
proud of. We have done, and continue to do terrible acts. "American Pie" acknowledges the sadness
of a terrible event, and I think that is important. We are too quick to forget bad events and actions.
Many Americans believe that the past was somehow better than the present. We can't return to our
former glory if we never really had it in the first place.
On the other hand, a big part of "American Pie" for me is the nostalgia. I have good memories
attached to the song. American could be better, but on a more personal level I love my home. I love
my family and friends I and here with. I am not personally patriotic in the original definition of the
word. I don't love my country because it is good, I love it because of the people here that I know to
be good.
I confess, there are parts of this song I still don't understand. I still don't quite get the meaning
behind the chorus, or if it has a meaning beyond what is actually written. What the deeper meanings
of several of the verses still eludes me too. The stories that it tells (that I mentioned earlier) are part
of what characterizes "American Pie" as the American Dream for me.
I am a storyteller at heart, I think. This song, more than almost any other for me, made me imagine.

How Rock 'N' Roll Changed America Essay
Rock 'n' roll has played a major role in some known historical developments post World War 2.
Music plays a significant part in America 's Cold War culture. Music gave us a sense of new
technologies and helped the world to prosper. It also is linked with African Americans living in the
South. Music was known for shaping the lives of the people during the 1950s and 1960s. Music was
geared towards the youth, race, ethnicity, gender and class. "All Shook Up: How Rock 'n' Roll
Changed America" by Altschuler, Glenn C, tells us the story of the birth of rock and roll during the
concrete years of 1955 to 1965. Altschuler gives us a overview of how rock 'n' roll has an historical
context. " For two years the Times printed dozens of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"The rise of rock 'n' roll and the reception of it, in fact, can tell us a lot about the culture and values
of the United States in the 1950s. According to historians James Gilbert, there was a struggle
throughout the decade 'over the uses of popular culture to determine who would speak to what
audience, and for what purpose". At the center of that struggle, rock 'n' roll unsettled a nation had
been "living in an 'age of anxiety'" since 1945" (p.15). Altschuler talks about how music and race
interlock with one another. Rock had become a "highly visible and contested arena for struggles
over racial identity and cultural and economic empowerment in the United States" (p.35). Other
chapters within the book state the battles involving sexuality, generational conflicts, as well as other
social issues. The author states ideas that are somewhat problematic. For example, he states that
there is a myth that rock 'n' roll went into a "lull" following the payola hearings (the practice of
record promoters paying DJs or radio programmers to play their labels ' songs) of 1959 and did not
come about again until the arrival of the Beatles in 1964. Rock 'n' roll presented us with the
emergence of a cultural phenomenon, which the book lays out for us. Altschuler sees rock as a
"metaphor for integration, as the focal point for anxiety that cultural life in the U.S. had become
"sexualized", a catalyst

My Buddy Holly Analysis
My Buddy– Holly Buddy Holley had gotten a contract with Decca Records after sending a sample
of four Acetate discs to Nashville, which were previously recorded at the Nesman Studio in Wichita
Falls. At the time, it was Buddy, Sonny Curtis and Don Guess who first went to Nashville to record.
All of the guys who traveled in this music crowd were excited to see their peers actually recording
in a big Nashville studio. Jerry Allison was still in high school and stayed in Lubbock while his
colleagues traveled to Music City. After recording a few songs like "Blue Days Black Nights", the
boys couldn't wait for the songs to be released. The song did get released, but met with dismal sales.
The boys took Allison back with them in the summer and recorded even more songs for Decca.

didn't make very many sales. The trip wasn't a total ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The youths, by all accounts, were clean–cut budding musicians, but typified the rebellious look

They often wore identical white t–shirts, blue jeans and donned slicked–back hair reminiscent of
James Dean's insurgent appearance. Their professional demeanor in the studio and fervent love of

the unique style of music created and performed by Holly and his friends. Vi Petty noted, "They
didn't look like musicians, but when they played, they showed otherwise." Holly and the boys were

The Change In The Song 'American Pie' By Don Mclean
The Day that Music Died "American Pie," written by Don McLean, was a very intriguing song that
described the change in music from the 1950s to the 1970s. Don McLean wrote this song in 1971,
and this song has since been one of the most debated and discussed songs ever. McLean seemed to
be angered by all this change in music but more importantly, the world. The world was completely
different and most of the change was due to the change in music. Moreover, Holden, in Catcher in
the Rye, hated change and blamed it on everyone just like how McLean blames all of this change on
music. Our society was forever changed by the types of music displayed from the late 1950s to the
1970s. Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and ... Show more content on

What is odd about this song is that it seems to be a slow song, but that's not the case. Now, in
"American Pie," McLean says "Well, I know that you're in love with him." This correlates with the
verse form "Hound Dog" in a way that women troubled men greatly during this time, and that they
were all the men thought about. Also, Elvis says,
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog cryin' all the time.
Presley says this because this woman was always crying to him about the relationship when in
reality she was cheating on him. Whether it was reality or not, Presley sure made a great song that
caught people's attention. This relates to how American Pie talks about the 50s and how women
were the main focus for younger men at this time.
Secondly, Buddy Holly produced some of the most influential work in rock music in the late 50s,
including his most famous piece of work, "That'll Be the Day." This song has since been a hit
because of his distinctiveness and how his lyrics attracted people. His lyrics were always linked to
women; which set the road for music being about women. "That'll Be the Day" was constantly a top
hit when released due to its rhythm. In the song, Holly says,
Yes, that'll be the day when you make me cry
You say you gonna leave, you know it's a lie

How Did Buddy Holly Influence The 1950's
Charles Hardin Holley, also known as Buddy Holly, was one of the most significant and influential
rock 'n' roll icons of the 1950's even though he only ever had one chart topping single. Holly's
musical legend was one of many firsts: First rock 'n' roll performer to insist on artistic control over
his material and to write/arrange his own songs and supervise his studio sessions. First to master the
technical parts of recording including echo, double–tracking and overdubbing (he recorded his own
voice and guitar playing). First to add classical stringed instruments in rock music. First to ditch the
"pretty boy" looks of most 1950's performers for a more intelligent, slightly geeky look, and the first
rock musician to attract not only a female, but also a male audience.
Singing Style
Holly had a unique singing style which featured stretched syllables and high energy. He broke the
typical rock practice by singing ballads with a "feeling of nervous excitement," said Arnold Shaw in
The Rockin' 50s. Buddy took a ballad of woeful words and ... Show more content on

Susan Allanson and Linda Ronstadt. Weezer released a song titled "Buddy Holly" in 1994 which

Don McLean. The song memorialized "the day the music died," referring to February 3rd, 1959, the
day Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and Big Bopper died in a tragic plane crash. Eddie Cochran
recorded "Three Stars," a tribute to the singers' deaths just one day after the accident. He was a huge

Don Mclean Pie Literary Devices
'American Pie' was written in 1971 and topped the music charts in 1972. Don Mclean wrote it partly
as a biography and partly as the story of the evolving America through the 1950's, 1960's, and
1970's. Don Mclean wrote the song to tell a story about his generation and how it had and continued
to change since he was younger. It took Mclean over ten years of work and with the combination of
many ideas American Pie was born. In American Pie by Don Mclean, he shows America's lost
innocence in the song after the 1950's through symbolism, allusion, and denotation. The first of the
two most abundant literary devices is symbolism. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent and
idea or quality. The first example of symbolism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Miss American pie is a symbol for the 'American Dream', he is saying bye to that idea of the
American dream, of the idea of domesticity of the 1950's.Mclean delves much deeper into this
change of society and loss of the original American dream, to much more specific details. In the first
verse the line "With a pink carnation and a pickup truck/ but I knew I was out of luck" in the line we
see that what has worked in the past will no longer suffice. Times are changing and the expectation
of romance has changed along with society. The simplicity of a flower and a cool car, or truck in this
case, is not enough, romance is different now since the 1950's are over. Not only is romance
different but now the music is starting to change as well. In verse two the line "And moss grown at
on a rolling stone/ but that's not how it used to be", has multiple symbols in it. First this is a symbol
of Bob Dylan's change in musical style. Bob Dylan wrote 'Like a Rolling Stone' this song is his first
major shift away from folk music. After he wrote the song Dylan was involved in a motorcycle
accident and he basically hid out in his house for about a year. The 'fat moss' symbolizes the time

Analysis of American Pie Essay
As the song begins, the narrator seems to feel nostalgic about the music written by a certain person,
and he describes the way that music made him smile (1–3). He misses the music from the past that
could make people smile, and that could help them forget their troubles. McLean seems to be
referring to the 1950s, which is clearer in the chorus of the song. As the speaker goes on, he says,
"But February made me shiver / With every paper I'd deliver." Here it is widely believe that Don
McLean is referring to the death of Buddy Holly. He is said to have been delivering newspapers on

He thought that the Beatles were warning America about the racial conflict happening at the time.
Manson wrote the title of the song on the wall in blood after committing the murders. In the line,
"We all got up to dance / Oh, but we never got the chance," the writer could be speaking about how
the Beatles wrote songs meant for listening and not dancing. Throughout this verse, the writer talks
about, "players." I believe that here he is most likely referring to the many protesters around this
time. He says, "sweet perfume," (57) most likely to refer to the use of tear gas against protestors. He
seems to believe that the government is corrupt when he says, "Cause the players tried to take the
field (61). Here he means that the protestors tried to create change but the government would not
allow them to make the changes. McLean continues his allusions to events happening around him
and in the past, and he again ends the verse with his constantly repeated line, "The day the music
died."
The next verse seems to focus on the events that happened at Altamont in 1969. "The flower
children gathered at Altamont, 300,000 strong, in a frenzy of drugs, alcohol and escalating violence"
(Fann). McLean is pointing out here that the ideas of the counterculture are obviously not going to

outstanding musical talents, he had a very good character trait that every performer needs; He could

disarmingly cavalier as a lyricist. (Drape) Still a stranger to his fans, Buddy Holly is more popular
than he was when he died 36 years ago. Sadly, Holly's fans never really knew him. He was never

Holly was a complex yet truly talented human being. (Amburn) "A triumph of subversion," Buddy

The Song American Pie Is A Representation Of Loss During...
The song American Pie is a representation of loss during the transition into the 1970s. It was written
in 1971 by Don McLean and filled with his views on the state of society, political changes, and
cultural changes. The cultural changes and the loss of everything society knew produced the lost
generation that McLean was apart of. He demonstrated his disapproval of the direction of the
country by using music, faith, and war as examples of the changes and loss his generation faced.
Music heavily influences and creates a voice for the people of the time period it is written in and
also reflects the tone of the time period. Mclean's generation was impacted greatly by classic rock
and roll artists, such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Music direction and message portrayed the
prosperous nature of the 1950s and what life was like before the 1970s. The change in music
direction rooted from a tragedy that Mclean recognized with the verse, "But February made me
shiver". In February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash.
Theses musicians were Mclean's heroes and rock and roll legends. McLean considered this to be
"the day the music died". After their deaths, music drastically changed. New musicians and styles of
music came into play. Buddy Holly and the other musicians before the Vietnam war sang uplifting
songs or songs with religious references. The verse "A long long time ago," is referring to the time

The History Of 1960s Music In The 1960s
Music in 1960s
Music has been a part of the human race for as long as it has been existing. Its various forms and
genres categorizes and divides the music country wise, ranging from initially Folk music as the
base, moving on to Country music as a regions identity. The music gained enormous name and fame
because of its hypnotizing effect on the singer and the listener. From Rock n Roll, evolving towards
British invasion, music in 1960's played a major role in evolution of UK.This evolution was brought
up by the introduction of rock and roll, collaborating different races and changing the lifestyle thus
transforming UK from a conservative country into the capital of the world.
Before rock and roll hit the Great Britain, blues and jazz were the genres of the era. Singers from
various nations like the US or Africa, started working solo or as bands and increased the impact of
music on people'slive. Before the 50's, various controversies arose regarding the style of Jazz and
Blues, and their effect on the local residents and "The "British Invasion" also began around 1963
with the arrival of The Beatles on the music scene and the type of rabid fandom that followed them
would change the way people would view and interact with me and musicians forever."(The People

Buddy Holly is known as "the pioneer of rock and roll." His career is recognized as one of the most

Essay on Popular Music Revolution
Music has undergone many changes throughout and history and prehistory. These changes were
always somehow connected to sociological movements at the time. Rock music evolved mostly out
of a need by young people of the fifties to break away from so–cietal norms. America had just come
out of the Korean War, and men looked to settle down into a peaceful life. Also just prior this time
period, Senator Joseph McCarthy ac–tively encouraged citizens to conform with his infamously
false accusations of Commu–nism. "McCarthy spectacularly charged that there were scores of
known Communists in the Department of State" (Bailey 887). This made people fearful that they
would be tried as Communists and led most to conform to a common societal standard. ... Show

Although this emphasis on a driving beat originally sprung from R&B, it quickly mutated into
its own unique form. This presuma–bly was to facilitate dancing to the beat, and this became the
reason many parents and other adults protested this type of music. Many performers' onstage
dancing styles were considered "lewd and inappropriate for their children." This became another
reason for the music's popularity because they were given a chance to rebel against their parents.
There is nothing prohibiting a situation like this from happening again. Today, teenagers in general
strive to become different from their parents. This causes new styles to emerge in music. The most
common deviation form the main rock theme is vulgarity in lyrics. Sublime, a popular alternative
rock band, has quickly found success with the teenage audience. The two most played songs on their
first album, 40 oz. To Freedom, being "Date Rape" and "Smoke Two Joints." The lyrics reflect the
tendency of youth to rebel against laws and authority. "I smoke two joints in time of peace, and two
in time of war/ I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints/and then I smoke two more." This is an
ob–vious attempt to aggravate the attitudes of parents, and although added vulgarities and drug
references do not constitute a new form of music, under extreme circumstances, the conventions
could deviate enough to allow something new to emerge.

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Groucho Marx's 'Casablanca'
Normally, authors would argue with an objective tone. But it is different in the case of Groucho
Marx. Comedian and film star, Groucho Marx, in his letter, argues to the Warner Brothers to let the
Marx Brothers use the title "Casablanca". Marx uses different diction to help convey a tone and
figurative language such as allusion to convince the Warner Bros. to drop the charges and lawsuits.
Marx appeals to emotion to convince and for the readers to relate and laugh as Marx elaborates his
argument. In his letter, Marx starts by stating on how he did not know Warner Bros. owned the the
name Casablanca; using a sarcastic tone. "For example, up to the time that we contemplated making
a picture, I had no idea that the city of Casablanca belonged exclusively to Warner Brother." By
using sarcastic tone, it implies how Marx is frustrated that Warner would not let the Marx Brother
use the title "Casablanca". The audience can relate and understand how frustrated the author is. To
this, it helps convince the Warner Bros. to drop the lawsuits and let the Marx Brothers use the title.
Then Marx uses an example to mock the Warner Bros. on how supposedly they own the title
Casablanca. "...Ferdinand Balboa Warner, your great–great–great grandfather [...] had stumbled on
the shores of Africa [...] named it Casablanca." Marx uses a mocking tone to show how absurd the
lawsuit is when they do not own title. It helps the Warner Bros. to understand Marx's argument and
convince them to drop the charges. By using a mocking tone, it helps the audience relate and
understand the author's point of view, while laughing at the author's mock. Then Marx moves to a
defensive tone to explain how the Warner Bros. claim that they own the title and giving different
examples of the same names to prove and elaborate on his argument. "You claim you own
Casablanca and that no one else can use that name without your permission." Marx uses a defensive
tone to give his opinion and make his argument more broad. By using a defensive tone, it makes the
Warner understand and listen to his argument. To this, it leads the Warner Bros. to be convinced by
his argument. The audience could relate to the opinion of Marx and agree with the argument of
Marx. Marx,

Essentially, the late 1960s and early 1970s are an in between stage for America, where people were

pop music history because the song was eight minutes and thirty–two seconds long. Later, it was
divided up into two parts and then turned into the version that is known today (www.don–

it is easier to understand the song because it can be read more in context.
The music of "American Pie" harkens back to a time of rock–n–roll, pianos, and acoustic guitars. A
time when the music was upbeat and peppy, causing you to want to jump up and dance. However,
the music during the time of its creation lacks the calming effect that is acquainted with the music of
previous eras. "American Pie" embodies many qualities of the music during the 1950s, including the
simplicity of the chord structures overall, the clear vocals, and well–known and used instruments.
With the use of simple but repetitive chords, Don McLean is able to shift the attention from the
musical facet of the song back to the lyrics and the individual person listening to it.

American Pie Is A Song That Made A Huge Impact On Americans
American Pie is a song that made a huge impact on Americans in any time period. Don McLean
sang about the events from the nineteen fifties through nineteen seventies after Buddy Holly's death.
Many events from those years are controversial. McLean also stated how music changed from these
decades. Rock 'n Roll used to be popular since the fifties. American Pie by Don McLean describes
the transition in Rock 'n Roll music from the iconic history of the mid nineteen hundred.
Nonetheless, many critics assume the first line of the chorus relates to McLean 's relationship with
the Miss America contestant. According to the Understanding American Pie website, the catchy
phrase, "So bye bye, Miss American Pie," refers to, "the beauty queen Miss America" (Fann 3)."
During McLean 's successful career, he dated Miss America, which Americans said that she is as
American as an apple pie. She represents the simplicity in American history that carried meaning.
Miss America does not correlate with the theme of the song. The transformation of Rock 'n Roll
music was impacted by different elements instead of Miss America. The lyric, "So bye bye, Miss
American Pie," that Americans assume is the Miss America never cause the change of events and
music. Primarily, McLean wrote this song after his Rock 'n Roll musicians who crashed in the plane
accident. Based on the Genius website, Don McLean quoted a phrase in the chorus that repeats, "[
...] This will be the day that I died" (1). When

Appointment In Samarra Essay
Julian English, the main character in Appointment in Samarra by John O'Hara, was a very heavy
drinker. Drinking is the main reason for Julian's downfall experiences throughout the story. In the
matter of three days, Julian English manages to make enemies with everyone that was once close
with him. Julian English's first fall was giving a reason for Harry Reilly to turn against him, which
was only the start of his downfalls. Eventually, the drinking then led to an end of his marriage with
his wife, Caroline. Not long after, the drinking, unfortunately, was the reason for Julian to commit
suicide.
Julian English was married to his beautiful wife, Caroline English. They lived in the town
Gibbsville and regularly attended the club and parties until Julian throws a drink in Harry's Reilly

believed that because he owed Harry money, that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

something that people never thought would occur. Also, the incident between Julian and Helen was
another things that others on Gibbsville were amused by. Ed Charney was another top man in
Gibbsville. These two main occurrences could recognize Julian English as a tragic hero.
The novel, Appointment in Samarra, was a series of downfall events Julian English experienced that
were all caused by drinking. Although Julian could be considered a tragic hero, the drinking
consumed his life and thus was the result of his death. Within three days Julian lost his wife, made
allies with two important men in Gibbsville, Harry Reilly and Ed Charney, as well as lost friends

My Favorite Day Of The Whole Year Essay

  • 1. My Favorite Day Of The Whole Year Essay Multicolored lights twinkle on the tiny boughs of an evergreen tree while presents spill out from under it in every direction. Steamy, delicious–smelling dishes cover every available surface. A manger scene, its figures oddly displaced by little hands, is strewn across the table. The air is so warm that I kicked my shoes into a corner within minutes of entering the house. Laughter and warm voices are ringing in my ears, but they somehow feel distant to me. As my five–year–old cousin darts past my feet, I find myself retreating to the bathroom, fingers fumbling with the door lock, shaky legs carrying me into the dry, vacant shower while jerky arms pull the curtain closed around me. It's Christmas Day; it should be my favorite day of the whole year. It's Christmas Day, and I find myself retreating from it all. It's Christmas Day, and my whole family has gathered together at my cousin's house. Well, not my whole family. My dad is hours away, spending Christmas with my half brother and his family. "Christmas" and "family" have meant many things to me over the years, but the one thing they have always meant to me is mom and dad, Christie and Sarah, and me, all together. This definition is one of the many things that has been ripped away since my mom asked my dad to leave the house many months ago in May. It was not supposed to be this way. My parents were supposed to be able to fix their problems and become the model of a loving Christian marriage that I always longed for. But ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Essay An Analysis of “American Pie” American Pie" is an impressionistic ballad by Don Mclean which features unique and intriguing lyrics. It has imaginative changes in tempo, vocal delivery and instrumentation, and imparts a wide range of emotions ranging from pure joy, to melancholy and despair. The song takes the listener on an autobiographical journey through the turbulent 1960's with references to the events that shaped the era. Don Mclean was enshrined in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 2004 for his work on "American Pie" (Don McLean: Songwriters Hall of Fame Inauguration). With its use of formal structure, allusions, and figurative language, the song, "American Pie", has many poetic qualities. The formal structure of "American Pie" allows Don Mclean to use multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the formal structure of this song is quite good, perhaps the use of allusion is one of the most important poetic devices found in "American Pie". An allusion is a reference to a famous person, place or thing. In the first verse Mclean writes "But February made me shiver with ever paper I'd deliver". This allusion refers to the plane crash on February 3, 1959 that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper, J.P. Richardson. Another famous allusion in this song is found in the fifth verse, Mclean makes a reference to the holy trinity, he writes, "And the three men I admired the most: The father, son, and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last train to the coast, the day the music died". This allusion is particularly brilliant on the part of Don Mclean, because it allows each individual person to use their imagination in order to interpret his allusion. This allusion has multiple meanings, for an example if one analysis this allusion in the context of music, Mclean was obviously referring once again to the death of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper, J. P. Richardson. However one could also analyze this allusion in the context of the political leaders of the 1960's and thinks that Mclean was alluding to the deaths of President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy. In addition to formal structure and allusions Don Mclean uses Figurative language, such as metaphors, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Coyote And Don Maclean Allegory of American Pie by Don McLean A Piece of the "Pie" Ask anyone what was the defining moment in the rock history of the 1960s was and all you will get is a one word answer: Woodstock. The three day rock festival that defined an era was only one of many music festivals of the '60s. But Woodstock has come to symbolize, "an era of peaceful, free– loving, drug– taking hippie youth, carefree before harsher realities hit..." (Layman 40). The Woodstock festival ended a century filled with many metamorphoses of rock'n'roll, from the era of pop music to the rebirth of folk music to the invention of acid rock. But some cynics say that rock'n'roll died with the death of Buddy Holly before the 60s even began. One such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holly was on tour with a collection of performers, and he wanted to fly to the next stop instead of taking the bus. He chartered a plane and a pilot to fly him and two others to Fargo, North Dakota (Verse 1). Originally it was to be Holly, Waylon Jennings, and Tommy Allsup. But J.P. Richardson ("The Big Bopper") talked Jennings into giving him his seat and Allsup lost his seat to Richie Valens ("La Bamba") on a coin toss (Jordan). The pilot, Roger Peterson, was a visual pilot, and not certified to fly an instrument plane flight. But on the night of February 3, 1959 the plane when up during a flurry. The pilot lost control and while he believed he was steering up, the plane went straight down. When the plane crashed all four men died instantly (Jordan). The day that the plane crash henceforth became known as "The day the music died". The chorus in American Pie is the main theme of the song. American Pie is the pure American art of rock and roll. The Chevy is the icon of America. The levee is the source of music and since the decline of original rock and roll, there is no water (or talent) in the levee: it's dry. "This'll be the day that I die," was taken from a Buddy Holly song entitled "That'll be the Day" and a line in the chorus read, "That'll be the day that I die," (Kulawiec). His voice is crystal clear when he sang this song, and it sounds like he is pouring his heart into the song. Don McLean has a very dynamic voice, which makes the song both very simple and complex. He makes his voice quiet on serious verses and adds energy to the song, which makes it a very unique song. The instruments that play during the song are a piano, a drum set, and guitars. • 21. Summary Of Pacific Distance By Joan Didion In her essay "Pacific Distances" author Joan Didion writes about the randomness and lack of meaning in the car culture of southern California. Her implied thesis is that people in Los Angeles spend their time "in transit," leading unreal lives without meaning or a sense of connectedness to anything, even other people. She conveys her thesis to the reader through expressive writing and unusual word choices, and she employs description and narration to create a sense of emotional deadness and random motion. Didion's primary purpose is expressive. The personal pronoun does not appear until the last few sentences of her essay, but when it finally does we realize that the narrator has been Didion herself, driving through Los Angeles on streets "devoid of meaning to the driver," in which "[c]onventional information is missing." Although the emotions presented in expressive writing are usually intense, Didion gives the reader a sense of her emotional deadness; her lack of emotion is itself an emotional state, and she presents that emotionless quality to the reader in such a way that even the "I" is suppressed until the essay's last few sentences. Secondarily, Didion's purpose is literary. To some extent her language and the way she presents her thesis are at least as important as what she has to say. Her unusual word choices help the reader to understand the strangeness of life in Los Angeles: Some people feel "a seductive unconnectedness" in the city, while in other people the ... • 25. American Pie Rhetorical Devices Media has been a vital element to American entertainment since its commencement. This entertainment comes in all varieties, whether it is film, commercials, music or general consumer ads. Either way, they are all used to engage or encourage the reader or viewer to feel a certain way. Music has always been a catalyst for human beings since the first caveman started tapping his feet in a rhythmic pattern. Music can be used to express any feeling a person can have about any subject they might think about. It can be used to describe the ideals of an era or time frame; just look at music over the last one hundred plus years. No matter what, there is usually always some sort of symbolism or deeper meaning that the songwriter is trying to get to the listener. It's no debate that the music we listen to today is most definitely not the music the generation our grandparents or even our parents listened to. The song "American Pie" by Don McLean, which released in 1971, is one of the most analyzed songs in American pop culture history (Shuck). Standing as a story all on its own, a simple analysis of the lyrics reveals allusions and metaphors in abundance. Analyzing these allusions and metaphors exposes many rhetorical devices used by McLean. A cultural revolution all in its own, the 1960's saw the rise and fall of many great civil rights leaders. John F. Kennedy, along with his brother, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., who were all paramount in the fight for civil rights, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Holly Jolly Christmas Spirit Everyone has always wondered how Santa delivers gifts to all of the children in one night. Truth is, he isn't even the one who delivers them. It is the reindeer. The North Pole is a part of an alternate universe where they travel through portals to bring the presents to everyone in one night. This is the same alternate universe of monsters, superheroes, famous princes or princesses, characters in books, greek gods and goddesses, and other figments of children's imaginations such as the tooth fairy or the Easter bunny. The measure of time is drastically different, making it easy for them to do all of this in one night. Every hour in human's time, is a day in reindeer's time. This year, something truly terrible has happened. Someone has stolen the Holly jolly Christmas Spirit, and there is no way for the reindeer to give the people presents. Donner and Comet spent two days traveling across the snowy alps to where their location lies. They have arrived in Whoville. Whoville is home to the most Christmas spirit filled place in any universe. If they can collect enough energy for this Christmas, they will be able to travel to the human universe which will collect even more Holly Jolly Christmas Spirit for the years to come. Analyzing Don Mclean's Song 'American Pie' Frank Rambala English IV H Rough Draft American Pie Music is a form of literature that can be used as an instrument to express an artist's feelings through their lyrics about a particular situation or topic. In the song "American Pie", Don McLean expresses his feelings on how the generation is changing and how the influence of music will "die" because of a tragic event. The wordage and tone of McLean's lyrics are written in a negative manner but represented in a positive and upbeat song. Don McLean's song, "American Pie", reveals three significant feelings, which include death, fear of change, and his devout faith. The main theme that is notable in Don McLean's song is death. Living through the sixties, McLean was able to express what he witnessed and how he felt. Death was one of his major themes in his song. The deaths of three famous singers was a major let down in the music world. It raised many questions as to who was going to take over the spotlight, and how music will forever change. Change also played a significant role in McLean's song. Society at the time was going through many changes that would form the United States into what it is today. Dealing with the many notable deaths and the many changes going on in society, the people seemed to have too much to handle and ultimately the breakdown of society began. McLean who was also dealing with the struggles of the 60's was able to find a safe haven with God. He used his strong faith to overcome the struggles. Overall Don McLean put a lot of time and effort into his song "American Pie". He took the time and put together meaningful lyrics that became one of the most famous songs in history. • 37. Charles Hardin Holley's Song American Pie Charles Hardin Holley, or as we all know him, Buddy Holly was amongst the most influential singer/songwriters of the rock and roll generation. He was a very popular artist. While traveling to one of his concert venues, the plane he chartered unexpectedly crashed killing him and two other mainstays of 50s rock and roll, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. It is this incident that drove Don McLean to write the song American Pie which, to this day, remains one of the most widely talked about and debated songs of all times. McLean left this song open for interpretation and while there are many disputed details there is no doubt that this song is about how the death of Buddy Holly was the symbolic end of not only "good" music but more importantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Rolling Stones have now taken over from the Beatles as seen in the "Jack Flash" reference as "Jumpin Jack Flash" is a Rolling Stone's song. McLean again turns a common saying on it's ear when Jack sits on the candle stick rather than jumping over it. Society is falling down. When the next verse says "Oh, and there we were all in one place A generation lost in space" McLean is talking about the Rolling Stones concert at Altemont, and they were lost in space because everyone was stoned. He then sings "no angel born in hell Could break that Satan's spell". Satan represents the Rolling Stones whose song Sympathy for the Devil is a first person song from Lucifer. And the angel is The Hells Angels, a very violent motorcycle gang, who were hired for concert security. Naturally when fans bum rushed the stage the angels got violent in retaliation actually killing a man. Satan or Jagger did not even notice the violence towards his fans. Society was at its lowest point here, no one cared for one another or the country. Both society and music have veered as far as possible from the simpler sweeter times of the 50s. When McLean "met a girl who sang the blues" he "asked her for some happy news but she just smiled and turned away". This girl is said to be Janice Joplin. McLean has a small glimmer of hope that there is some remnants of good within music and society but when he asked her for good news she turned and walked away, crushing his hopes of a better society. When McLean goes back to the record store where he had listened to the music of his past, the owner replied that they don't play it anymore further showing that the era that he wants back will never ... He was an American singer and songwriter who produced some of the most distinctive and influential work in rock music. The songs he co–wrote and performed with his backing band the Crickets remain as fresh and potent today as when recorded on primitive equipment in New Mexico half a century ago: That'll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Not Fade Away. His influence on the development of pop music was incalculable, particularly in the UK. After a fun and insightful experience from the previous volunteer work, I decided to look for another volunteer opportunity to help the restoration of our ecology. There were more than forty volunteers, so we were split into two groups each comprised of about twenty volunteers. I was shocked to see that there were children volunteering. It made me realized that the work of restoring and preserving our environment should be taught and started since their young age. We were separated with the first group as we stroll towards the restoration site. It was a forest nearby the park. Along the pathway towards the site, I detected trashes around the area and some English Ivies. However, as we reached the restoration site, there were a lot of English Ivies that we would have to eradicate. We were given loppers to cut the vines and hand–rakes to remove the roots of the English Ivies. Compared to my previous volunteer work, English Ivies on this site have larger and heavier vines. They entangled the plants in their surroundings. Although pulling the ivies out by hand would be more convenient, I opted to use the loppers to cut the ivy vines before pulling them out. Some people believe that McLean's work is nothing more than simple rhymes, while others believe there is much deeper meaning. McLean refuses to directly answer questions about the lyrics, so we are left to make our own assumptions. There is only one line that McLean will speak about. The line is, "February made me shiver / with every paper I'd deliver" (Line 7). This line speaks of the first time McLean learned of Buddy Holly's death in 1959. The address to the term, "Miss American Pie" references a plane that went down killing singer Buddy Holly. The line, "The quartet practiced in the park," refers to the famous pop group Beatles who became famous shortly after the death of Holly. All of the other symbolism in this song revolves events that happened around that time of Holly's death. McLean uses informal irony in the tone of the song to convey this deep symbolism. Because of the depth, there is a big controversy on what some of the words represent. Some people even think "Miss American Pie" represents the civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.. One example of McLean's use of irony is in the story about Holly. The irony comes from how he describes when Holly was younger, "he borrowed a coat from James Dean," and then many years later he was a famous singer. McLean uses a subjective point of view as he uses his interpretations, comments, and judgments to appeal to pathos in this song. McLean uses only two of the rhetorical appeals. Ethos is used when he describes the other singers most people know about. "And while Lenin read a book on Marx," emphasizes ethos because Lenin was a famous singer who people respect. Pathos was used throughout the whole piece especially when he said "the lovers cried and the poets screamed." This quote describes the people's sadness towards the death of Holly, which appeals to the listener in many emotional ways. He also uses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

McLean illustrates famous rock star artist and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1962 by using rhetorical strategies. The different potential interpretations of this song made it one of the most controversial songs from the 1970's. McLean was hitting home with many emotional resonances defining moments in the recent American experiences. "American Pie" starts out addressing McLean love for music in the 50's. During the 50's, music was a tool for getting people off their feet and on to the dance floors. "And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those people dance, and maybe they'd be happy for a while" (McLean). This verse symbolizes why he loves to create and perform for his fans. McLean then goes on to mention his mentor Buddy Holly. "But February made me shiver. With every paper, I'd deliver. Shocking news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried. When I read about his widowed bride. But something touched me deep inside. The day the music died" (McLean). Buddy Holly died on February 3, 1959, in a plane crash. There are two theories on why the song was called "American Pie." It was rumored, "American Pie" was the name of the plane that took Buddy Holly life. Also, someone refers it to a symbol of the beauty queen Miss America (Morgan). Mclean remembered the paper boy delivering the morning paper and there on the front page, was the story of the death of Buddy Holly. At the time Holly's wife was pregnant and soon had a miscarriage afterward. McLean, he says he can't remember if he cried in the moment or not. All this was in the first few verses in "American Pie." McLean incorporated these lines of imagery to help the listener picture his past emotional experiences. I believe McLean wanted to paint a picture for his audience could relate to. During these times it was tough for McLean. Not only did Buddy Holly die but also rock star legends Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. For McLean music died for him and the rest of the world. One has had a long career in the industry and the other has unfortunately has had a short career. Both have had wonderful and successful lives and are still well known for what they accomplished with their music. Buddy Holly played rock 'n' roll for a few short year but the music he recorded in that time has made a major and forever lasting impact on popular music. Not only did he write his own music, but he was also the first to exploit advanced studio techniques such as double–tracking, (rockhall.com). Bob Dylan on the other hand is a recognized poet laureate of the rock 'n' roll era and the pre–eminent singer/songwriter of modern times. No matter if he is singing topical folk songs, exploring rootsy rock and blues, or delivering one of his abstract, allegorical compositions, he is always demonstrating a rare ability to reach listeners with his lyrics, (rockhall.com). Buddy Holly was born on September 7th, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. His birth name was Charles Hardin Holley, he is the youngest out of four children. He got the name Buddy from his mother, who felt his birth name was too big for a young boy. The Rock, Pop And Soul Reader By David Brackett The articles that I chose to examine from the Rock, Pop and Soul Reader by David Brackett are titled On Wax by Paul Whiteman and Mary Margaret McBride, and What Songs the Beatles Sang by William Mann. These articles came from different time periods in which there was a need for change in music. The artists discussed in these articles took a chance, and experimented to create a new sound that the audience enjoyed. Other important similarities include the specific changes made in the music, and what made the sound more popular. Despite the similarities and differences, these articles have also taught me much about the history of rock and roll including; the effects of change in music, and the imagination and creativity behind it. When comparing the articles, one can determine that they are similar. On Wax looks at the introduction of new music and technology in the 1920s that revolutionized the music industry. However, What Songs the Beatles Sang, looks at the change in music during the time of the British Invasion, and why the Beatles were successful. In On Wax¸ it stated that in the 1920s, there was change of instrumentation in nearly all orchestral pieces (Whiteman and McBride, 11). This included the addition of the tuba replacing the double basses, ordinary drums replacing banjo, and tympani and snare replacing the regular drum. These additions created a muddy and fuzzed–up effect that listeners enjoy (Whiteman and McBride, 11). Similarly, in Musicology by Theodore ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The record player was an ugly plastic box, situated in the corner of our then unfinished basement. More than anything else, I remember him playing the song "American Pie"by Don McLean. To this day I can still sing the majority of the lyrics of the eight and a half minute song from memory. According to my brother, we were the ones repeatedly asking my dad to play it, but in my memory, it was always my dad just playing it for us unprompted. "American Pie" acknowledges the sadness of a terrible event, and I think that is important. We are too quick to forget bad events and actions. Many Americans believe that the past was somehow better than the present. We can't return to our former glory if we never really had it in the first place. On the other hand, a big part of "American Pie" for me is the nostalgia. I have good memories attached to the song. American could be better, but on a more personal level I love my home. I love my family and friends I and here with. I am not personally patriotic in the original definition of the word. I don't love my country because it is good, I love it because of the people here that I know to be good. I confess, there are parts of this song I still don't understand. I still don't quite get the meaning behind the chorus, or if it has a meaning beyond what is actually written. What the deeper meanings of several of the verses still eludes me too. Title: Bud, Not Buddy Author: Christopher Paul Curtis Detailed Description of Setting: This story takes place in Flint and Grand Rapids, Michigan, during the middle of the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a really bad worldwide economic recession throughout the 1930's, which caused high unemployment for adults and homelessness for many children. Bud "not Buddy" Caldwell is the main character and is a ten–year–old African–American boy who lives in Flint, Michigan. Bud has been staying in orphanages and several foster homes since his mother died four years earlier when he was six. Bud never knew his father. The few items Bud has left to remember his mother are a bag of rocks, a photograph of his mother as a child and fliers that show Herman E. Calloway and his jazz band, the Dusky Devastators of the Depression. He keeps them in an old suitcase. Bud thinks that Herman Callaway is his father and goes "on the lam" to try to find him. He meets many people and gets into many adventures along the way. Eventually, his journey leads him to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the jazz clubs where Herman and his band play. Questions: 1. What is the central theme of the book? How was it developed? Response: I think the central theme of the book is the importance of family. Bud's mother died when he was only six, and his life had been very tough. He said one time that "my eyes don't cry no more." It would have been very easy for Bud just to give up ... Music plays a significant part in America 's Cold War culture. Music gave us a sense of new technologies and helped the world to prosper. It also is linked with African Americans living in the South. Music was known for shaping the lives of the people during the 1950s and 1960s. Music was geared towards the youth, race, ethnicity, gender and class. At the center of that struggle, rock 'n' roll unsettled a nation had been "living in an 'age of anxiety'" since 1945" (p.15). Altschuler talks about how music and race interlock with one another. Rock had become a "highly visible and contested arena for struggles over racial identity and cultural and economic empowerment in the United States" (p.35). Other chapters within the book state the battles involving sexuality, generational conflicts, as well as other social issues. The author states ideas that are somewhat problematic. For example, he states that there is a myth that rock 'n' roll went into a "lull" following the payola hearings (the practice of record promoters paying DJs or radio programmers to play their labels ' songs) of 1959 and did not come about again until the arrival of the Beatles in 1964. Rock 'n' roll presented us with the emergence of a cultural phenomenon, which the book lays out for us. McLean seemed to be angered by all this change in music but more importantly, the world. The world was completely different and most of the change was due to the change in music. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What is odd about this song is that it seems to be a slow song, but that's not the case. Now, in "American Pie," McLean says "Well, I know that you're in love with him." This correlates with the verse form "Hound Dog" in a way that women troubled men greatly during this time, and that they were all the men thought about. Also, Elvis says, You ain't nothin' but a hound dog cryin' all the time. Presley says this because this woman was always crying to him about the relationship when in reality she was cheating on him. Whether it was reality or not, Presley sure made a great song that caught people's attention. This relates to how American Pie talks about the 50s and how women were the main focus for younger men at this time. Secondly, Buddy Holly produced some of the most influential work in rock music in the late 50s, including his most famous piece of work, "That'll Be the Day." How Did Buddy Holly Influence The 1950's Charles Hardin Holley, also known as Buddy Holly, was one of the most significant and influential rock 'n' roll icons of the 1950's even though he only ever had one chart topping single. Holly's musical legend was one of many firsts: First rock 'n' roll performer to insist on artistic control over his material and to write/arrange his own songs and supervise his studio sessions. First to master the technical parts of recording including echo, double–tracking and overdubbing (he recorded his own voice and guitar playing). First to add classical stringed instruments in rock music. First to ditch the "pretty boy" looks of most 1950's performers for a more intelligent, slightly geeky look, and the first rock musician to attract not only a female, but also a male audience. Singing Style Holly had a unique singing style which featured stretched syllables and high energy. Don Mclean wrote it partly as a biography and partly as the story of the evolving America through the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. Don Mclean wrote the song to tell a story about his generation and how it had and continued to change since he was younger. It took Mclean over ten years of work and with the combination of many ideas American Pie was born. In American Pie by Don Mclean, he shows America's lost innocence in the song after the 1950's through symbolism, allusion, and denotation. He says, "sweet perfume," (57) most likely to refer to the use of tear gas against protestors. He seems to believe that the government is corrupt when he says, "Cause the players tried to take the field (61). Here he means that the protestors tried to create change but the government would not allow them to make the changes. McLean continues his allusions to events happening around him and in the past, and he again ends the verse with his constantly repeated line, "The day the music died." The next verse seems to focus on the events that happened at Altamont in 1969. "The flower children gathered at Altamont, 300,000 strong, in a frenzy of drugs, alcohol and escalating violence" (Fann). McLean is pointing out here that the ideas of the counterculture are obviously not going to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Holley's town, family, and the radio didn't supply, Holly found within himself. He set his politely maverick personality into his music. (Drape) Besides Holley's outstanding musical talents, he had a very good character trait that every performer needs; He could charm an audience. Buddy Holly conveyed words and sounds in a way all his own and was disarmingly cavalier as a lyricist. (Drape) Still a stranger to his fans, Buddy Holly is more popular than he was when he died 36 years ago. Sadly, Holly's fans never really knew him. He was never interviewed, didn't appear in any movies, and left behind no will. (Drape) Holly was a complex yet truly talented human being. (Amburn) "A triumph of subversion," Buddy was slipping hedonism through the front door. (Drape) Not only did Holly influence many later generations of rock artists, but also, Holly became the model for countless singer–songwriters. From John Lennon to Bob Dylan, Holly was an inspiration. (Amburn) For example, The Stones and the Beatles made no secret of Buddy's influence on them. Their names were inspired by Holley's band, the Crickets. It was written in 1971 by Don McLean and filled with his views on the state of society, political changes, and cultural changes. The cultural changes and the loss of everything society knew produced the lost generation that McLean was apart of. He demonstrated his disapproval of the direction of the country by using music, faith, and war as examples of the changes and loss his generation faced. Music heavily influences and creates a voice for the people of the time period it is written in and also reflects the tone of the time period. Mclean's generation was impacted greatly by classic rock and roll artists, such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Music direction and message portrayed the prosperous nature of the 1950s and what life was like before the 1970s. The change in music direction rooted from a tragedy that Mclean recognized with the verse, "But February made me shiver". In February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash. Theses musicians were Mclean's heroes and rock and roll legends. McLean considered this to be "the day the music died". After their deaths, music drastically changed. New musicians and styles of music came into play. • 129. Essay on Popular Music Revolution Music has undergone many changes throughout and history and prehistory. These changes were always somehow connected to sociological movements at the time. Rock music evolved mostly out of a need by young people of the fifties to break away from so–cietal norms. America had just come out of the Korean War, and men looked to settle down into a peaceful life. Also just prior this time period, Senator Joseph McCarthy ac–tively encouraged citizens to conform with his infamously false accusations of Commu–nism. "McCarthy spectacularly charged that there were scores of known Communists in the Department of State" (Bailey 887). This made people fearful that they would be tried as Communists and led most to conform to a common societal standard. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this emphasis on a driving beat originally sprung from R&B, it quickly mutated into its own unique form. This presuma–bly was to facilitate dancing to the beat, and this became the reason many parents and other adults protested this type of music. Many performers' onstage dancing styles were considered "lewd and inappropriate for their children." This became another reason for the music's popularity because they were given a chance to rebel against their parents. There is nothing prohibiting a situation like this from happening again. Today, teenagers in general strive to become different from their parents. This causes new styles to emerge in music. The most common deviation form the main rock theme is vulgarity in lyrics. Sublime, a popular alternative rock band, has quickly found success with the teenage audience. The two most played songs on their first album, 40 oz. To Freedom, being "Date Rape" and "Smoke Two Joints." The lyrics reflect the tendency of youth to rebel against laws and authority. "I smoke two joints in time of peace, and two in time of war/ I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints/and then I smoke two more." This is an ob–vious attempt to aggravate the attitudes of parents, and although added vulgarities and drug references do not constitute a new form of music, under extreme circumstances, the conventions could deviate enough to allow something new to emerge. ... • 133. The Rhetorical Analysis Of Groucho Marx's 'Casablanca' Normally, authors would argue with an objective tone. But it is different in the case of Groucho Marx. Comedian and film star, Groucho Marx, in his letter, argues to the Warner Brothers to let the Marx Brothers use the title "Casablanca". Marx uses different diction to help convey a tone and figurative language such as allusion to convince the Warner Bros. to drop the charges and lawsuits. Marx appeals to emotion to convince and for the readers to relate and laugh as Marx elaborates his argument. In his letter, Marx starts by stating on how he did not know Warner Bros. owned the the name Casablanca; using a sarcastic tone. "For example, up to the time that we contemplated making a picture, I had no idea that the city of Casablanca belonged exclusively to Warner Brother." By using sarcastic tone, it implies how Marx is frustrated that Warner would not let the Marx Brother use the title "Casablanca". The audience can relate and understand how frustrated the author is. To this, it helps convince the Warner Bros. to drop the lawsuits and let the Marx Brothers use the title. Then Marx uses an example to mock the Warner Bros. on how supposedly they own the title Casablanca. "...Ferdinand Balboa Warner, your great–great–great grandfather [...] had stumbled on the shores of Africa [...] named it Casablanca." Marx uses a mocking tone to show how absurd the lawsuit is when they do not own title. It helps the Warner Bros. to understand Marx's argument and convince them to drop the charges. By using a mocking tone, it helps the audience relate and understand the author's point of view, while laughing at the author's mock. Then Marx moves to a defensive tone to explain how the Warner Bros. claim that they own the title and giving different examples of the same names to prove and elaborate on his argument. "You claim you own Casablanca and that no one else can use that name without your permission." Marx uses a defensive tone to give his opinion and make his argument more broad. By using a defensive tone, it makes the Warner understand and listen to his argument. To this, it leads the Warner Bros. to be convinced by his argument. The audience could relate to the opinion of Marx and agree with the argument of Marx. Marx, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Now that the time period that surrounded the release of "American Pie" is established it is easier to understand the song because it can be read more in context. The music of "American Pie" harkens back to a time of rock–n–roll, pianos, and acoustic guitars. A time when the music was upbeat and peppy, causing you to want to jump up and dance. However, the music during the time of its creation lacks the calming effect that is acquainted with the music of previous eras. "American Pie" embodies many qualities of the music during the 1950s, including the simplicity of the chord structures overall, the clear vocals, and well–known and used instruments. With the use of simple but repetitive chords, Don McLean is able to shift the attention from the musical facet of the song back to the lyrics and the individual person listening to it. McLean also stated how music changed from these decades. Rock 'n Roll used to be popular since the fifties. American Pie by Don McLean describes the transition in Rock 'n Roll music from the iconic history of the mid nineteen hundred. Nonetheless, many critics assume the first line of the chorus relates to McLean 's relationship with the Miss America contestant.
