Analysis of Comic Content and Visual Image Usage
Comic Content Analysis This analysis is of page two of a local Sunday comics section. The reason
that I selected this particular page is there are six different comic strips on this page. One of the
comic strips, Garfield, features animals in this installment, though people do figure into the story
fairly often. I did not analyze Garfield other than to note that the cat outsmarted the dog but, then, it
is his comic strip. The other comic strips are as follows: Frazz, Sally forth, Luann, Crankshaft, and
The Family Circus. The Family Circus is about just what the title implies. This particular installment
is about how parents tend to be unaware of how they continue using parent–like language and
behaviors when they are in the presence of other adults. Each of three cells illustrates one of the
common ways parents give away that they don't spend much time away from their children. There is
a fairly equal representation of men to women in this comic, but the "father" character says more
words than the "mother" character. Cells = 3 Male = 9 words Female = 5 words Sally Forth depicts
two children a girl and a boy playing together in the snow. They are shown building a snowman. The
entire snowman building process is shown, with the exception of creating a face by pressing objects
into the head. The children do not speak until the last two cells and the second–to–last cell contains
only one word. The point of the comic strip is that the children are not really "into" making the

A Portrait of a Young Man Essay
A Portrait of a Young Man.
Portrait of a Young Man was painted by Angolo Bronzino between the years of 1503–1572. The
portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches and is an oil on wood( Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1999). I
picked this painting because of the self assurance, at first glance, of the young man that is depicted.
This appealed to me because it reflected my own attitude.
After studying the portrait for a considerable amount of time I began to see possible sadness or self–
doubt in the young mans face that betrays his powerful stance. I felt a connection to the young man,
knowing all too well what it was like to present a powerful outside image while knowing there was a
self conscious and scared person inside. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An Artistic Evaluation head worked into the side. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the
monster heads that are found on the furniture and on the folds of the young mans clothing, which I
was unable to locate, allude to literary references that would have been appreciated by the artist's
friends. In the background there is a green colored room, that includes a door frame, a Doric column
and a capital.
Portrait of a Young Man was painted during the Mannerism period. It was done by Bronzino in Italy
c.1540. The portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches, it's vertical because it's a portrait. The frame cuts the
shapes in the painting, this was done purposely in the typical Mannerism style which usually
crowded the pictorial area . The painting is supported by wood, opaque oil paints were applied
thickly with a fine brush, I was unable to see any distinct brush strokes. The forms are flat except for
the beads on the young man's hat which seem to raise off the painting.
The portrait contains a simple organization. There are few individual units like the chair and table
but the picture is crowded. The shapes are regular and complete with clear defining lines. The
painting is geometrically ordered, the chair and table appear to support and reinforce the pose of the
young man.The palette the artist used is subdued,

Picture Book Research Paper
Books change with readers as they age from a child into an adult. Children start off with simple
picture books or short stories that hold many images and grabs their attention. Picture books that
teach them about their surrounds and other subjects. As they age, books grow in intensity and more
complex from adventures into mysteries. Young adults, teenagers, tend to read more difficult novels
that contain meaningful stories or teaches them about worldly issues. Comic books and graphic
novels are loved by all ages for their creative illustrations to their spontaneous storylines. Overall,
what people read affect their lives, influence their growth and impact their character. I am no
different. As a reader, the books I have read throughout my life have impacted me to a degree and
affected my character in some way. As a young child, my reading started off in China where I was
born. The books I read were simple books that were meant for me to learn the language. Therefore, I
started off my literature background with mandarin picture books. Those picture books were more
like cartoon style comic strip layout type picture books than the simple single page ... Show more

The books I read are more university textbooks than regular story books. However, there are times I
enjoy a good fantasy or mythology novel. Books surrounding myths of different cultures such as
Greek Mythology (for example, Percy Jackson and The Olympians) or books involving my hobbies
(for example, sewing books/magazines) or sometimes even a few manga. Those books pertained to
what I liked more than what I needed to learn. Also, I was very much into folklore stories that
surrounded China and Japan. Folktales were stories that connected me with my Chinese background
and also showed me cultures that captured my interest. All of these books further developed my
character as I began exploring what I liked to learn or cultures of

A World Without Photography: Imagine A World Without...
Imagine a world without photography: no news photographs, no advertising photographs, no family
pictures, no endless number of magazines with photographs. How would our knowledge and
understanding of the world would have been different? What about the culture? Photographs have
always been an important part of our lives it affects our lives such that we see what photograph
'shows' but we don't see the photograph as a 'thing' and still we cannot think about our lives without
photographic existence.
I have always been fascinated with the concept of a CAMERA, and the concept of freezing a
moment forever. Having a memory, having a beautiful thing in your hand which you can treasure
forever. Ever since I picked up my camera and I started taking ... Show more content on

How a viewer might perceive a picture might even contradict as to what the photographer wanted to
say. This fact is explained by Roland Barthes, where he challenged the common sense idea that if
the photographer is not there to explain the photograph, we only have resources i.e. a photograph to
interpret what he wanted to say. While taking a picture sometimes even photographers are not sure
about their intentions with the picture they want to take, or even if they are, their expectations might
not match with the results. The results might be completely different and convey a different meaning
altogether. A photographer's vision gets restricted by the little hole through which he sees. While
framing a picture, the photographer is restricted with the frame. He also has to intersect two quite
distinct procedures, i.e. how the light falls on the object and the formation of image through optical
device. All these works in his head but the result might be completely different and more dramatic
then what the photographer thought of or it might even be vague. In photography we can never
predict what might be triggering for the viewers or the photographer himself after they look at the

Garry Winogrand's Photography
Every day we witness events and experience moments that are engraved in our memories for
possibly our whole lives. Those significant events shouldn't be simply remembered by memory but
with physical evidence from photographs. Garry Winogrand is an artist that takes photographs of a
plethora of different life events. Those events span from major political movements to a simple
family fun day; as a result, there really is no shortage in the diversity of Winogrand's photograph.
His black and grey photographs seems to capture unique moments in everyday life in a casual way.

"The picture may discort; but there I always a presumption that something exists, or did exist which
is like what's in the picture." (Sontag). In a photograph that Garry Winogrand capture, there is an
adult couple each holding a baby monkey in their arms. This scene was taken in the streets of a busy
city sidewalk. Not only is it a strange scene but it would have certainly been hard to believe if you
did not see it with your own eyes. However, with the photograph that Garry Winogrand took, there
is evidence that that scene actually existed. Even though there is probably an immensely high
chance that the same scene would happen again, the photograph will always prove that the small
event did exist. Another example would be when Garry Winogrand took a photograph of people
laying on a grass field while there are black balloon covering the sky. It is an event that will be hard
to duplicate. The balloon was captivating and Garry Winogrand made sure to prove to everyone that
it did exist. It was indeed a beautiful sight because there was one single tree within these people and
it added to the beauty of the event. Garry Winogrand tried to convey that principle in his
photographs because he wanted to proof that these events were actually happening. Furthermore, he
wanted to let people know that no one made to events up. With his photographs all the scenes that he
saw can be proven

Personal Narrative: Sarina Go-Oana
On the last day of fifth period, of my junior year Sarina Go– Oana and I took this ridiculously
hideous selfie of our selves. This horrendous session came about when we both finished our final
exam and we had nothing else to do. So we decided to take our friends phone and take some selfies.
They came out pretty unflattering if I do say so myself. I looked like monster who just woke up
from her nap. My face must have looked very inane during class. Anyways I chose this photo
because it was the nicest one I could find of my face. Sarina cheated and only took a picture of half
her face and has a very lethargic look. Where I was in the back with my full face looking like a
monster. But that's okay because I still look beautiful. It amazes me to

My Ethnography
I got my first camera at the age of eight; it was a blue Olympic digital camera. I used my camera
whenever I could. Ever since I was little I noticed the little things in life. The main thing I want to
do with my life is to be a world known photographer. I want to travel the world with my camera and
show the world how beautiful earth is. I started collecting old fashion cameras at the age of twelve. I
started collecting cameras because I liked the different styles and technology they came up with.
When I was fifteen, I got a Nikon camera for my birthday from my grandparents. I captured images
every day, I still use it, I use it for portraits and landscapes. I currently have eight different styles of
cameras, including my favorite Fujifilm Polaroid. I always have a device on me that I can take
pictures on. My Polaroid and Nikon are always in my car, and my phone is always with me.
I love taking photos whenever I can. At family events, they usually find me behind the lens of a
camera. My favorite type of image is ones that are unexpected they're not posed and the subject

Comic Story In Literature
Just like traditional literature, comic books can be analyzed through narrative, structure, and plot.
Since the narrative is one of the prime factors in storytelling, comics must have a strong narrative. If
there is no narrative, there is no story. Although, it's important to keep in mind that stories are still
stories, whether you're reading A Tale of two Cities or Watchmen. After all, a good story can be told
in any medium at all. With this in mind, while analyzing parts of the narrative, one can observe that
the nature of the comic book's medium contributes to the storytelling of good stories. Also, comic
books just like literature can be analyzed through plot. While plot is not the end all of narrative, a
poor plot can certainly compromise the value of the narrative. Unlike literature books that can go on
and on, the comic book storyline needs to be told in a limited number of pages, and its executed
through the sequential images. Like it has been said many times before, "a picture says a thousand
words", and in the case of comic books, the pictures tell a story just as well or if not better than a lot
of written words. Take this example from The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman: That whole passage
of The Graveyard Book was converted into one page. Even with the absence of words, it's still
possible to get the same feelings of thrill and anticipation just like in a page of book. Since comic
books consists of being released as monthly issues, a comic's plot must be

Gustre Dore Reflection
On Tuesday, July 11, 2017, I made a trip to the Denver Art Museum. I found a painting by Gustave
Dore, a French painter from Paris, France. The piece was, The Family of Street Acrobats: the
Injured Child painted in 1873. After studying this piece of art in person I noticed many different
elements and characteristics in the actual painting. These are not seen in the photographed image of
the painting that is on the Denver Art Museum Online.
There are many visual elements that are taken away from a painting when it is made available in an
online collections website. When I saw The Family of Street Acrobats: the Injured Child I
immediately went up to it and I could see the texture of the paint, the line and the blobs on the
mothers dress and the long lines of the back ground. The paint was raised, which you cannot observe
in the online picture. The picture online was obviously edited. The color and light are changed
significantly through the editing. It makes the painting look very light and you are able to see more
detail without having to look at it for long. By making the painting brighter it took away from the
original colors of the paint. The father is too bright. This change seems to alter the mood and energy
that the painting is projecting. The size of the painting is misrepresented in the editing of it. When
comparing the two you can see that the online image was cropped. This takes away the space at the
very top of the painting. This is significant because you lose

We Are A Camera, By Nick Paumgarten
Although a memory may deteriorate over the span of years or even decades, a photograph will last a
lifetime. Images are more than an object to have for safe keeping. In his article, "We Are A Camera,"
Nick Paumgarten discusses the uprising of the popular recording device known as the GoPro. This
device is used to record events and experiences from different perspectives, whether that is from
underwater or zip lining through a forest in a first–person view. Moreover, videos and photography
allow people to capture images to reminisce about past experiences, to share these moments with
others, and even remember those whom you have lost. There are countless debates about how
distracting cell phones and other electronic devices can be however, they can still be used in positive
ways, such as capturing images. Images are a way of recalling events or memories. Certainly, with
these images a person would depict a picture far more vividly than what they could have conjured
up by simply trying to remember the moment. After going through a great experience, people tend to
want to reflect and rejoice at what they had done or gone through. The most memorable moment of
my past would have to be my seventh birthday party. It was a small surprise in the middle of a park
in Fort Lauderdale on a scorching hot day. I recall playing soccer on the grassy plains, receiving
gifts and the abundance of laughter in the air. The only problem is, I only remember vague images in
my mind that I pieced

Short Story
In a hidden dark place within a campus. You'll see nothing out–of–place at first site, but if you

After walking a certain distance he saw the cemented road and muttered "How come they burned
those rotten woods and collected those bricks and cements while this road that has even have more

He was really angry at those pricks for burning down the last memento of his deceased parents.
Before he could come up any speculation he heard a "Beep!" it's a beep coming from a car.
He saw a Mitsubishi Eclipse moving slow and honking at him. The car window opened and a beauty
come out and said "Hey, I'm lost in this place and I'm not too sure if I'm going the right way, can you
tell me where's Y'raunaja City? As for compensation, you can hop in and I'll give you a ride!"
El was surprised not only because the girl find this place but was also a beauty! He was thinking,
"What luck! I think I can make her my first ever girlfriend! Those curves, hair and scent... waaah !!!
I'm in luck!"
Before he could answer, the girl turned, scared and said "I'm sorry for disturbing you, sir!" and she

Cesar Aira Essay
In Cesar Aira's novel El Pequeño Monje Budista, Napoleón Chirac, a French photographer, is led by
The Little Buddhist Monk (literally, the littlest Buddhist Monk ever seen), to a not very well known
temple in order to photograph its 'space'. Chirac's work consisted on, from the center (an arbitrary
center) of the space, taking a series of pictures covering the perimeter and then digitally uniting
them, which would result in one big horizontal image. This temple, located at the outside of a big
Korean city (Seoul, we assume), is particularly empty, is not touristic at all, which is perfect for
Chirac. However, after setting up his equipment, he realized how the other monks who were at the
temple started to sabotage his shots. He had already explained to them that what he needed was to
photograph the empty space, but despite the warning, they still were, as little kids, getting in the way
and giggling while running away only in order to do it again. Chirac let them do that; since he was

To think that we are still not thinking, as Heidegger would say, is something we achieve through the
body: "To think is to learn what a non–thinking body is capable of, its capacity, its postures" (189),
and I shall add: its ceremonies.
The fact that a Buddhist monk is the protagonist, his slowness and his almost ritualistic movements,
connect with what Deleuze calls "The cinema of the body." This is not a cinema that does not think,
as we have seen. There is a cinema of the brain too for Deleuze, but there is as much passion and as
much abstraction in one or the other they both are different ways towards the unthough (204).
According to Deleuze, a cinema of the body does not just mean to mount a camera on the everyday
body; rather, it has to do with making it pass through a ceremony, a liturgy

Analysis Of The Book ' Comic Party Poster ' Essay
Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Manga
comic–party–poster
Summary: Just when high school nears the close, a Japanese student named Kazuki and his
girlfriend, is pulled by his scheming best friend Taishi into the world of fan comics. As Kazuki's
obsession with finishing his comic in time for the next convention threatens his schoolwork and his
relationships, he must decide how he will use his time or risk losing Mizuki.
STORY – 4.1
Tragically, it has been a long time since I watched the show, and clearly my methods changed over
the years. From the fragments I do remember comes a great, clean story of one named Kazuki and
his introduction into Manga (specifically doujinshi) that takes us on a journey through an industry.
When most people think of Manga in America, they might compare it to Marvel Comics, which is
somewhat misleading. Manga is not reserved for super–heroes nor to trite concepts that may be
disgusting in America (see The Mask) but yet never quite puts us inside. This is not to say Comic
Party attempts this, rather it expresses the deeply woven nature of the Manga universe that should
give any foreigner a pause before stereotyping the industry negatively.
This is perhaps the biggest appeal and weakness to Comic Party, in that as an educational comedy it
seeks to balance self–deprecating jokes with giving its audience a better comprehension of the work
involved, all while not coming off as boring or uninspired.
Whether it succeeds is largely up to you, however

Gerard Jones Violent Media Is Good For Kids
Violent Media is Good for Kids, by Gerard Jones was written on Wednesday, June 28th, 2000. It
was published on the website, www.motherjones.com to present the positive effects some children
receive from violent comic books, cartoons, graphic novels, rap music, and video games. The
author, Gerard Jones, was introduced as a renowned comic–book author. The introduction described
the author's opinion as, "an argument by Jones that bloody videogames, gun–glorifying gangsta rap
and other forms of 'creative violence' help far more children than they hurt, by giving kids a tool to
master their rage." The articles asked if the author was insightful or insane. The article is an

The genre for the article is political because Jones purpose for writing the article was to promote and
defend children's exposure to violent media. Jones audience for the article included both side of the
argument and allowed for interaction on the website for discussion. Jones pathos used only positive
examples for his argument and offered no acknowledgement of any negative effects of violent
media's influence on children. Jones' logos used a series of successful stories as a logical argument
for the author's claim made in the title. Jones waited until the end of his article to clarify that he was
not arguing that violent entertainment was not harmless. This strategy builds the reader towards
supporting Jones article. Jones success story, as well as his son's, lead the argument so that Jones has
credibility as the author. Jones use of Moore gave a sense of expertise to the article, which was
written in a happy tone that is less formal for a political article. Jones visual effects depict violent
scenes from Oktane, a comic book authored by Jones and Gene Ha. The images depict power and
control in a crowded social environment supporting Jones

Henry Peach Robinson : The King Of Photographic Picture...
Henry Peach Robinson Henry Peach Robinson, born on July 9th, 1830, was a British photographer
and prominent author on photography. Known as "the King of Photographic Picture Making," he
began his life's work as a painter but would become one of the most influential photographers of the
late 19th century. He was a prolific advocate for photography as an art form and is well known for
his role in "pictorialism," which, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, is "an approach to
photography that emphasizes beauty of subject matter, tonality, and composition rather than the
documentation of reality." After finishing school at the age of 13, Robinson began an apprenticeship

Robinson was one of the first photographers to setup a staged photo–shoot. He was known to create
outdoor scenes in the studio where he could control the elements as well as the model. His preferred
models were members of high society or paid actors rather than the unsophisticated peasants he was
depicting because he felt that the actual peasants were "dull and awkward" and didn't fit in his
picture perfect settings. He would pose his models to create his ideal scene within the genre. Since
Robinson's goal was to create stills that resembled paintings, he took no issue with combining
elements that were "real" with those that were staged. The effect he was trying to accomplish was
known as the "pictorial effect," a subject that he delves into deeply in his book, Pictorial Effect in
Photography: Being Hints on Composition and Chiaroscuro for Photographers, published in 1869.
In his book, Robinson states, "any dodge, trick and conjuration of any kind is open to the
photographer's use. It is his imperative duty to avoid the mean, the base and the ugly, and to aim to
elevate his subject... and to correct the unpicturesque. a great deal can be done and very beautiful
pictures made, by a mixture of the real and the artificial in a picture." As a pictorialist, Robinson was
of the belief that the photograph should conjure feeling or a particular mood. " 'Art Photography'

Kathryn Strong Hansen's Essay 'In Defense Of Graphic Novels'
Angie Rodriguez
Patrick Vogelpohl
English 120
17 December 2014 In the essay, "In Defense of Graphic Novels", Kathryn Strong Hansen explains
the different opinions about using graphic novels in a classroom. When most people hear of a
graphic novel, they assume it's a comic book and that it has no relevance in a classroom. Because
they have pictures, they also assume that they are meant for children. Hansen explains, however,
that students can analyze graphic novels the same way they would a prose–only novel. She also
states that low level reading students could benefit from reading graphic novels. Because they can
be used to help struggling students, students who are doing well believe that graphic novels are too
easy of a read. It could also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Graphic novels prevent this confusion from happening. With the pictures that go along with the text,
students can understand exactly what the author is saying. Graphic novelist, David Small, confirms
this in his interview by Julia Tindell. He says, "I know that the text is there to tell what the pictures
can't and vise versa. They augment one another" (Small). For example in Blankets, there is a part
where the main character, Craig, goes out to where he and his younger brother would go out to play
when they were little. They remember about a cave that they had found once but every day they
went back to it, it would get smaller and smaller until one day, it just disappeared. Craig then says,
"But that memory is so dream–like–too eerie and beautiful and cryptic to be true" (538). From that
text, you would most likely assume that the memory he was talking about is the one with the cave.
By the image in Fig. 1, you can clearly see that the memory that he is really talking about is the
memory of his old love interest, Reina. The images that come with the text really make it easier to
grasp what the author's

World War II Comic Books Failed
Man has utilized graphics since before writing was invented to communicate their thoughts and
feelings, and while for a period, the combination of both image and written word remained
underutilized, the core idea behind 'comics' or 'graphic novels' continued to develop. The subject of
these graphics range from early humans attempting to communicate information about animal
migration patterns painted on the walls of caves, to mythological stories painted onto the surface of
pottery. These images are made to be informative, or entertaining, but in general fail to deliver a
message that moves beyond the delivery of information, and between good and bad. In both pre and
post–World War II comic books failed to be much more than entertaining propaganda. Yet,
eventually comics shifted towards darker, more psychological themes, and with this change in style
came additional recognition and popularity for graphic stories as a medium. Following these
developments, many have claimed that the driving force behind the economic and critical success of
graphic stories created in this era was primarily due to the improvements in production values and
sheer mass of content created. However, it is more likely that the change in subject matter affected
the perception of comics due to the ability to evoke emotion in a fashion that just words and just
pictures could not do by themselves. The graphic narrative's unique ability to demand the reader
become a witness to the horrors of the

Photographs Capture Time And Create Meaning
Photographs capture time and create meaning. Mark Klett's "Under the Dark Cloth", is a simple, yet
compelling piece of art which captures his experience in Monument Valley, Arizona on May 27th,
1989. The perspective of the photograph is strategic in allowing the viewers to see from Klett's point
of view. This angle places the viewer in the first person, connecting them directly to the image.
Images of landscapes are often engrossing, Klett's piece does this on two planes.
In the text, Visual Methodologies, author, Gillian Rose uses semiotics as a way to make sense of an
image. She defines semiotics as the study of signs and their use or interpretation, or, "how images
make meaning" (pg. 75). Under close inspection of Mark Klett's "Under ... Show more content on

Another question could be looked at through the lens of "positional communication". "Who is
positioned as superior and who inferior?" (pg. 82). The photographer makes the audience feel as if
they are a part of the image, giving the audience a connection to the subject of the photograph. This
allows power within the image to be equally distributed and shared between human and nature.
The objects within the image, such as the watch, camera, and dark cloth connote time, preservation,
and reflection. Klett's use of signs give his photo the purpose it needs to remain captivating. Within
Klett's photo, icons, indexes, and symbols are all presented.
The icon most prevalent in the image is the upside down image of Monument Valley. This iconic
image represents that specific rock structure in the valley. This image is also a synecdochal sign, it is
a part of this rocky range, representing the national park as a whole.
The two indexes that stand out immediately are the camera and the dark cloth. When you see a
camera– you immediately think of documentation or memories. When we think of something under
the dark cloth or in a dark space we think of referees reviewing a play or the process of developing a
photograph. When someone is under the dark cloth, it is a personal, capturing moment. This sign is a
moment of silence and critical reflection.
The symbols which are presented in the photograph include the camera, watch, and the style of the
photograph.

The Dark Knight Returns, By Jorge Luis Borges Essay
Writer, Jorge Luis Borges says, "The things that are said in literature are always the same. What is
important is the way they are said." Literature is such a broad, all encompassing term that much is
lost in translation. This is part of the reason behind the ongoing brawl: what qualifies as literature?
In the case of graphic novels, they are often cast aside by critics, deemed definitively inferior and
lacking intellectual merit. However, this assumption does not hold up in today's world of literary
work. Genres and mediums evolve every minute of every day, continuously changing the game.
Even considering the evolution of traditional novels in modern society challenges the original
denotation of literature. "As a consequence, the traditional characteristics [lose] their importance as
the defining criteria of literary works of art" (Breuer para. 12). Due to the evolving world of
literature, the definition of such must evolve as well, claiming a few necessary guidelines but
fluctuating as required. The graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns, can be definitively classified
as a work of literature through Frank Miller's approach to written language application, character
establishment, and plot development.
Perhaps the most inherent part of The Dark Knight Returns' literary qualification is the very use of
written language. In simplest terms, literature is defined as "written works." One must not be
swayed then by the comic aspect of graphic novels because the presence of

Today, images surround us, and they can have a bigger interaction between their viewers than may
be assumed. In Scott McCloud's book, "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art", he relays the
concept of simplification, and how to use it to bring more emphasis to the meaning of the drawing.
In other words, McCloud is saying that through a process of breaking down a drawing to its rawest
and most simplistic form, the piece itself becomes deeper in meaning. When looking at a finished
image it should be apparent that the artist put thought into every detail, line, shape. When a final
image looks simplistic, this is where the artist has succeeded in tricking the eye into believing the
image is effortless when in fact it can in some cases be the exact ... Show more content on

By making a simplistic image as a logo or icon the directed focus brings attention to the details that
the artist saw as important and most relatable for the product being sold, company, or just image in
general to the selected audience. McCloud uses an example of breaking down the image to make the
image more applicable in his example of the simplification process, "by stripping down an image to
its essential 'meaning', an artist can amplify that meaning in a way that realistic art can't", (McCloud,
30). McCloud makes a point in the statement that realistic art in these terms isn't as relatable to
everyone because it is too specific, and this means that not everyone can easily relate. The point of
an icon or logo is to make it easy to relate to, understand, or both in order to make the targeted
audience remember the design and recognize it in the future. Going back to the example of Figure 1
the simple design is something that is easy to remember and relate to because of the familiarity that
is referenced by the design. These two things are just a few of the key elements that make it a

Similarities Between The Dragon And Beowulf
The Dragon The dragon that lurks underneath my skin most definitely holds me back from being the
best person possible. The dragon in causes me to retreat into my comfort zone when life starts to
throw obstacles my way. By retreating I avoid any complications that may erupt from confronting
the dragon face to face. To defeat the dragon would give me the upper hand and the ability to take
on any challenge thrown at me. The fear of branching out in life is my dragon, I have always been
one to stay in my lane and do only what I know. Unlike Beowulf who displays fearlessness and
braveness while tackling his dragon, I on the other hand do not inhabit these qualities because being
fully human has its setbacks unfortunately. It would take all the strength in my body to just take
down my dragon while Beowulf takes one stroke with a sword to slay his dragon. By defeating my

Scott Mccloud's Understanding Comics
When it comes to reading comics, it takes patience and understanding. Since this was my first time
reading a true comic book, I have a new appreciation for comic books. With the reading of Scott
McCloud's, Understanding Comics, there are many elements that go into making a comic book a
true comic. Applying the teaching of color that McCloud taught in his book to the comic, Batman:
Year One, the color scheme that is used in certain panels help bring the story off the page and is
another form of emotions being expressed. In Understanding Comics, McCloud defines comics as,
"Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information
and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer" (McCloud, 1993, p. 9). ... Show more content

This scene however was not as pleasant as watching a sunset. This color scheme in particular does
act a sunset in a way because at first, Gordon is safe, that is when the sunset is most beautiful. Then
once he realizes he is in danger and being attacked, the color begins to fade darker, same as when
the sun continues to set. Finally, once Gordon has tried to put up a fight and realizes who his
attackers were, the last panel has a black background and Gordon is shown as the sunset color,
hence when a sunset is over, there is darkness. The colors in this scene help you feel the pain that
Gordon must have felt when being beaten by bats and just knowing he was being beaten just enough
to get the message.
In chapter eight of Understanding Comics, "A Word About Color", McCloud talked about how color
can be used to expressed different roles. His six examples were: central role, dominant mood, depth,
scenes being about color and sensation and environment (McCloud, 1993, p. 190–191). In the
previous scene with Gordon, color was being used as the dominant mood. Another scene in Batman
used color as the central role. Detective Gordon had many scenes in Batman due to the depth of his
story, but the turning point in the story had to be when he and Sarah Essen share their first

Illustration In Maus By Art Spiegelman
Illustration is by far one of the best methods of expressing a story or an idea to a large–scale
audience. In literature, writer uses various amounts of illustration to appeal to their audience's
interests and point of view.
But with Graphic Novels, readers see things the way the writer/illustrator sees them. Drawings,
cartoons, and photographs can give readers the exact imaging the author wants to share with his
readers.
When people think of graphic novels, most likely you would think of children's books or Superhero
comics. Now this may be true; but the use of graphic novels hold a lot of benefits for adults as well.
They're the perfect way to share a message without any miscommunication. And let's face it, almost
every adult out has a favorite genre that can be shared in a graphic novel. I for one love comics with
Anti–heroes and Sci–fi/Fantasies. One famous graphic novel that shows the power of illustration is
Maus by Art Spiegelman, which illustrates the darkest points of the Holocaust with a perspective of
mice (Jews) being suppressed by cats (Nazis). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I myself enjoy writing and creating characters, but one of the greatest challenges is making molding
their image with words. Even if I have a perfect visual of my character in mind and very descriptive
choice of words, my readers will never see my character the same way I do. I might be able to
attempt adding enough description in my text too help the readers see them, but that would take
pages and nobody can keep an interest in a story if it takes a whole chapter to describe a character or
a scene. But, if I use graphic illustration instead, I can share my characters along with the setting of
the story and every crucial detail within a portion of a page. Like they say, a picture is worth a

The Rabbits-Deconstruction of Visual Essay
John Marsden's and Shaun Tan's epic picture book, "The Rabbits", is an allegorical fable about
colonisation, told from the perspective of the natives. An unseen narrator describes the coming of
'rabbits' in the most minimal detail, an encounter that is at first friendly and curious, but later
darkens as it becomes apparent that the visitors are actually invaders. My chosen image (above),
embodies the overall style of the book which is deliberately sparse and strange. Both text and image
conveys an overall sense of bewilderment and anxiety as native numbat–like creatures witness the
environmental devastation under the wheels of a strange new culture, represented by the rabbits. The
image projects a painting of a striking sunset and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This metaphorically suggests that the rabbits have already begun to construct their homes, and now
nobody can stop them. Their forceful invasion into the native indigenous landscape is further
emphasised by the dead lizard featured in the foreground, which has been brutally squashed with
seemingly no remorse. Furthermore, the buildings in the background are entirely formed by jigsaw
pieces. Thus Tan presents us with a visual allegory of the rabbit society as manipulative and un–
relentless nature. The small strip across the top of the visual, presents us with an alternate world that
is natural and heaven–like where numbat–like creatures are suspended upon tree branches. The gaze
of the numbat–like creatures leads us to the quote, "They didn't live in trees like we did". Through
the inclusion of text Tan portrays that the numbat–like creatures don't understand the rabbits. This
quote does not show any strong emotions, but instead the blatant tone bestows a 'clueless' feeling to
us, the responders. This section is very small in contrast to the rest of the image showing the rabbits.
This symbolically represents the unprecedented manner in which the rabbits came and quickly
"made their own houses". At observing the picture more closely, we can conclude that where the
numbat–like creatures are sitting, the sky is lighter compared to where the rabbits are placed;
implying that the lighter colour is the time the numbat–like creatures were familiar

Yossel: Novel Analysis
Graphic novels have been seen as a controversial topic. Are they literature or are they part of a
separate category of art? Many authors have stepped out of the stereotypical superhero graphic
novel box and into a new world of using graphic novels for autobiographies, fiction stories, and
historical accounts. The graphic novel Yossel tells the story of a young Jewish boy named Yossel
who grew up in Poland in the early 1940's. He spends most of his days drawing superheroes and
aspiring to become the illustrator for a comic book company in the future. However, one day in
Poland the Nazi's arrive to bring his world of dreams to a sudden halt. Yossel's entire family is taken
to the Warsaw ghetto where he draws pictures to entertain the guards. ... Show more content on

Although many of the stories are valuable and even edifying, most do not contain the same literary
content as the "classics." Many of the sentences are short, simple, and made primarily of dialogue.
The story lacks in depth of written description, instead using pictures to relay the author's idea; The
pictures are the primary method of telling a story in a graphic novel with words as the secondary
force. Illustrators draw enough pictures that the reader is able to get an idea of the plot without
reading a single word. Literature uses words as the primary force to convey the idea. The literary
canon is made up of novels which essentially use the twists and turns of diction and syntax to
communicate the depth of themes and purpose, not pictures. Although both of these types of books
have to potential to be reinterpreted for generations and pulled apart to find themes and teachings
that can be applied to the past, present, and future, only the typical novel can be considered

Ansel Adams Influence On Photography
"When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I

neither words nor pictures that explain emotion and that is where silence and listening are heard.

Film, La Jetee As A Reference Point For My Discussion Essay
Can a pictorial narrative be formed purely through the use of images? It is a question many have
sought to answer, and one that is becoming increasingly relevant as our literary concepts evolve to
keep pace with developments in modern technologies. I have chosen to use the ciné–roman designed
by Bruce Mau from Chris Marker's 1962 science–fiction film La Jetée as a reference point for my
discussion. The film is constructed almost entirely of still–images, shot through a Pentax camera.
Involving the "future destruction of Paris," the film follows a prisoner haunted by the image of a
woman from his childhood, sent through time by his controllers (Lupton 2005, 87). The ciné–roman
presents the film's still–images in a graphic novel format, with English and French subtitles
positioning the film's voice–over into text on the page. Ultimately, I will attempt to argue that
images can be used to create a purely pictorial narrative, in reference to the theories of visual culture
expressed by Barthes, Burgin, Berger and Baetens, among others. It is important to note that the
ciné–roman exists independently from its predecessor: "the French ciné–roman is a novel or film
scenario designed to read not necessarily in conjunction with the film upon which it is based"
(Santoro 1996, 37). As such, while I will direct some attention to the discussion of the tension
between the ciné–roman's and its cinematic predecessor, I have chosen to focus my deeper
discussion on the implications of image

The Walking Dead : The Game
For this Media Product Analysis paper, I will be reviewing "The Walking Dead: The Game" from
Telltale Games. "The Walking Dead: Season One" has a total of five episodes which were released
digitally one episode at a time every two months from April 2012 to November 2012. Each game
takes approximately two hours of gameplay.
The Walking Dead universe does not use the term zombies, but "walkers" instead. The premise of
the game revolves around the main character Lee Everett and a little girl named Clementine, who he
meets at the beginning of the game and is set to protect her at all costs. On the way to find a better
place or escape for survival, they meet several people and survival groups who may leave or die due
to decisions that the players make. The main storyline does not stray too much and the choices that
the players make affect more on character development and how the other characters in the game
perceive Lee.
There are several times in the game where players also get a little bit of action when Lee fights off
the walkers or other dangerous people. However, the game is more focused on decision–making and
especially quick–time events, where the player is given a time limit to make a decision. In a way, the
player gets to play their own adventure and make the choices that they would make if they were in
Lee's situation. The game plays a lot on real ethical issues or sticky situations that sometimes may
not have a clear line on what is good or evil. It is all up

Nick Sousanis 'Second Chapter Unflattening'
The well–known cliché goes "a picture says a thousand words" and this is an idea that Nick
Sousanis explores in his book "Unflattening". The saying implies that images are able to speak
volumes, more than words could ever express. Images convey different messages to people and in
doing so evoke thoughts and emotions that words often cannot. Individuals interpret images based
on their own ideas and experiences, therefore an image can be seen in many different perspectives
creating diverse meanings from one single image. Since there are so many different perspectives it is
easy to see how Sousanis images can convey several different concepts.

It is easy to see how the image can convey many different concepts based on perception of
individuals. When looking at the image it is typical for the eye to be drawn to the bottom right
corner because of the dark sketch lines. While reading through the limited amount of text provided it
guides the reader into the concept is wants to convey. However, by the use of images one can get
many different thoughts and ideas without the restriction of words. The language used on this page
discusses the "QUEST FOR REASON", "THE FEAR OF THE UNKOWN", and "DEPTHS OF
LIGHT", and these ideas can all be seen solely through the image. The light is in the center of the
page and from my perspective this can be seen as the earth being the center of universe. The
lightness and darkness in the opposite corners of the pages can be seen as heaven and hell. The light
line hatching in the top corner can be perceived as heaven because heaven is often seen as being
above and correlated with lightness and white. Looking at the opposite corner of the image, there is
dark shading that can be seen as a representation of hell. Hell has always been associated with
darkness and as being below. This is just one interpretation of this image, while I see the message of
heaven and hell being conveyed from this picture other people may see another concept. In

Comic Analysis
Palaeolithic cave drawings with sequences of images depicting a hunt are the earliest account of
comics we have today. This type of sequential art must be considered historically speaking when
attempting to unpack the definition of what are comics. Scott McCloud defines comics as
juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence intended to convey information and/or
to produce an aesthetic response to the viewer. In order to better understand what a comic is , we can
compare and contrast literary novels with comics through three main features: format, plot narrative
and length. Literary novels use simple text to uncover everything to the reader. In a novel, the reader

Literary novels require lengthy character development and buildup of what is to come in a story.
There are five typical stages a novel typically follows. The first part is the expositon. The exposition
is the setting of the scene where early questions are answered such as setting place and time . The
main characters are introduced as well as the point of view. In a comic, readers are invited to piece
together setting, place and time visually . In the twelve volume comic serial entitled Blackhole the
first series serves as the basis for what is to come much like a novel. The main character Chris
Rhodes is introduced along with the setting which is in suburban Seattle in the 1970s in high school.
The second part of a literary novel is the rising action which is the building of the tension. This
building of tension can be seen in Blackhole when Chris has sex with Rob unprotected. The climax
is the third part which is typically the most exciting part. The climax in Blackhole can be seen when
Chris begins to show that she has caught the bug because she has had sex unprotected so she goes
into hiding in the woods. The fourth part, the falling action, is when Chris begins to not have enough
food and Rob disappears. Lastly is the resolution, which is the ending of the story. The ending of
Blackhole ends on a cliff hanger with no clear resolution to what happened to Chris. In comparison,
Blackhole followed a typical five stage story structure similarly to a literary novel even though most
comics may not . This exhibit of a five part typical story structure depicts the idea of how a regular
literary novel needs lengthy development. Length in comics may very greatly . A single panel comic
may be considered a comic in of itself . Comic books show and exhibit setting, place and time

Comics, since their conception, have been seen as an immature media that is strictly pop culture
without the ability to pass substantive messages. However, the quantities of people who read and
share comic books provide open pathway to idea sharing. The Legend of Chun Hyang I is an
example of this cultural messaging through this medium. Written in 1992, as Asian cultures were
joining the globalizing world, this manga represented cultural hybridity as a Korean folktale being

McCloud states that it is normal for children to begin early literary life with the combination of
words and pictures only so long as they "GROW OUT OF IT" (McCloud 739). McCloud does not
put these words in bold because that is what he wants people to do; he does it because that is what
he does not want people to do. McCloud is attempting to break the common held belief that a child

says that "traditional thinking has long held that truly GREAT works of art and literature are only

he is holding back are some of the most renowned books ever written including the Holy Bible, "To

provides these great works of art and literature in order to support what he said. McCloud does not
however, wish to use these examples to persuade people that pictures and words should be kept

Photorealism In Manet's A Bar At The Folies-Bergere
Photorealism is a term that characterizes the artists whose work depends heavily on photographs and
mixes together the real and the unreal. For example, Manet's A Bar at the Folies–Bergère utilizes
photorealism to depict a scene from modern Parisian life: a young barmaid stands behind the bar of
a bustling night–club, confronting the viewer with a worn–out, emotionless expression and
seemingly awaiting her patron's order or request. The painting plays with our sense of reality by
showing a strange man and the misaligned reflections of the barmaid and the champagne bottles in a
mirror. Likewise, in Picture for Women, Jeff Wall emulates the internal structure of Manet's painting
and incorporates elements such as the light bulbs and and poles to give the image spatial depth. This
photograph shows a reflection in the mirror of a sparse studio room split into three panels with a
woman on the left, a camera framed by a window in the center, and a man walking on the right.
Both images utilize reflection to breach the limits of the naked eye's perspective and evoke a sense
of mystery and ambiguity. This paper will argue that in Picture for Women and Bar at the Folies–
Bergere, Jeff Wall and Manet utilize female protagonists and the motif of the mirror to examine
spectatorship and movement in still art and challenge our traditional sense of reality and the concept
of the male gaze. In both Manet's Bar and Wall's Picture for Women, the mirror challenges our
common–sense perceptions

different characteristics. In the early years of photography, few if any photographers were specialists

The lights on the building and around it stand out because they are a bright colour. I think the way
the sea blue colour merges into the deep blue/black colour of the background works really well.
The photograph doesn't really have a story to it, as there isn't much going on, it doesn't have energy
or any movement to it at all. However it could easily be a scene used in a film, such as an
establishing shot. The photo has a certain peaceful feel to it. It is soothing to look at; this is because
it is a calm, quiet setting– you can almost feel your presence there, staring into the beautiful view. I
think the reason that the photo has such a positive, relaxing feel to it is down to the fact that the
composition of the photo reminds you of a deep blue sea or a clear black sky. The photo has strong
verticals and horizontal, which emphasise a static feel and the negative space.
The picture has a large depth of field with the two buildings the centre point of it. Only natural
lighting is used for this photo, therefore getting the exact time of day right would have been
essential.
The photo also has some negative points to it. The angle at which the photograph is taken from
makes the picture looks really flat and plain, For instance if

Armageddon as Positive Force : Ray Bradbury 's "The Highway" and Robert Kirkman 's The
Walking Dead
Who knew the end of the world as we know it could be a good thing? At least this is what the end of
the world is shown to be in Ray Bradbury 's "The Highway" and Robert Kirkman 's The Walking
Dead. In both stories, the apocalypse cleanses the world of the filth of civilisation, which is
presented as something hindering the protagonists and mankind in general. The destruction of
civilisation also allows the protagonists to return to a more primitive way of life, a way of life that is
also freer and more fulfilling. The apocalypse destroys the social hierarchy that was in place,
allowing people who were nobodies before the end of the world to rise up and become leaders and
heroes.
The end of the world is portrayed as a positive event in "The Highway" and The Walking Dead
because it causes the destruction of civilisation. In both theses works, the hallmarks of contemporary
civilisation, such as technology and modernity, are portrayed as bad things because they create lazy,
entitled and dependant people. In Bradbury 's "The Highway", this is shown in the contrast between
Hernando and the American tourists. Hernando, who represents a more natural way of life, is noble
and hard–working. The American tourists, on the other hand, represent modern civilisation; they are
spoiled, lazy, and complain about everything. They also act like Hernando is a tourist attraction and
not a human

Analysis Of Comic Content And Visual Image Usage

  • 1. Analysis of Comic Content and Visual Image Usage Comic Content Analysis This analysis is of page two of a local Sunday comics section. The reason that I selected this particular page is there are six different comic strips on this page. One of the comic strips, Garfield, features animals in this installment, though people do figure into the story fairly often. I did not analyze Garfield other than to note that the cat outsmarted the dog but, then, it is his comic strip. The other comic strips are as follows: Frazz, Sally forth, Luann, Crankshaft, and The Family Circus. The Family Circus is about just what the title implies. This particular installment is about how parents tend to be unaware of how they continue using parent–like language and behaviors when they are in the presence of other adults. Each of three cells illustrates one of the common ways parents give away that they don't spend much time away from their children. There is a fairly equal representation of men to women in this comic, but the "father" character says more words than the "mother" character. Cells = 3 Male = 9 words Female = 5 words Sally Forth depicts two children a girl and a boy playing together in the snow. They are shown building a snowman. The entire snowman building process is shown, with the exception of creating a face by pressing objects into the head. The children do not speak until the last two cells and the second–to–last cell contains only one word. The point of the comic strip is that the children are not really "into" making the ... • 3. A Portrait of a Young Man Essay A Portrait of a Young Man. Portrait of a Young Man was painted by Angolo Bronzino between the years of 1503–1572. The portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches and is an oil on wood( Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1999). I picked this painting because of the self assurance, at first glance, of the young man that is depicted. This appealed to me because it reflected my own attitude. After studying the portrait for a considerable amount of time I began to see possible sadness or self– doubt in the young mans face that betrays his powerful stance. I felt a connection to the young man, knowing all too well what it was like to present a powerful outside image while knowing there was a self conscious and scared person inside. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An Artistic Evaluation head worked into the side. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the monster heads that are found on the furniture and on the folds of the young mans clothing, which I was unable to locate, allude to literary references that would have been appreciated by the artist's friends. In the background there is a green colored room, that includes a door frame, a Doric column and a capital. Portrait of a Young Man was painted during the Mannerism period. It was done by Bronzino in Italy c.1540. The portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches, it's vertical because it's a portrait. The frame cuts the shapes in the painting, this was done purposely in the typical Mannerism style which usually crowded the pictorial area . The painting is supported by wood, opaque oil paints were applied thickly with a fine brush, I was unable to see any distinct brush strokes. The forms are flat except for the beads on the young man's hat which seem to raise off the painting. The portrait contains a simple organization. There are few individual units like the chair and table but the picture is crowded. The shapes are regular and complete with clear defining lines. The painting is geometrically ordered, the chair and table appear to support and reinforce the pose of the young man.The palette the artist used is subdued, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Picture Book Research Paper Books change with readers as they age from a child into an adult. Children start off with simple picture books or short stories that hold many images and grabs their attention. Picture books that teach them about their surrounds and other subjects. As they age, books grow in intensity and more complex from adventures into mysteries. Young adults, teenagers, tend to read more difficult novels that contain meaningful stories or teaches them about worldly issues. Comic books and graphic novels are loved by all ages for their creative illustrations to their spontaneous storylines. Overall, what people read affect their lives, influence their growth and impact their character. I am no different. As a reader, the books I have read throughout my life have impacted me to a degree and affected my character in some way. As a young child, my reading started off in China where I was born. The books I read were simple books that were meant for me to learn the language. Therefore, I started off my literature background with mandarin picture books. Those picture books were more like cartoon style comic strip layout type picture books than the simple single page ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The books I read are more university textbooks than regular story books. However, there are times I enjoy a good fantasy or mythology novel. Books surrounding myths of different cultures such as Greek Mythology (for example, Percy Jackson and The Olympians) or books involving my hobbies (for example, sewing books/magazines) or sometimes even a few manga. Those books pertained to what I liked more than what I needed to learn. Also, I was very much into folklore stories that surrounded China and Japan. Folktales were stories that connected me with my Chinese background and also showed me cultures that captured my interest. Imagine a world without photography: no news photographs, no advertising photographs, no family pictures, no endless number of magazines with photographs. How would our knowledge and understanding of the world would have been different? What about the culture? Photographs have always been an important part of our lives it affects our lives such that we see what photograph 'shows' but we don't see the photograph as a 'thing' and still we cannot think about our lives without photographic existence. I have always been fascinated with the concept of a CAMERA, and the concept of freezing a moment forever. Having a memory, having a beautiful thing in your hand which you can treasure forever. Ever since I picked up my camera and I started taking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How a viewer might perceive a picture might even contradict as to what the photographer wanted to say. This fact is explained by Roland Barthes, where he challenged the common sense idea that if the photographer is not there to explain the photograph, we only have resources i.e. a photograph to interpret what he wanted to say. While taking a picture sometimes even photographers are not sure about their intentions with the picture they want to take, or even if they are, their expectations might not match with the results. The results might be completely different and convey a different meaning altogether. A photographer's vision gets restricted by the little hole through which he sees. While framing a picture, the photographer is restricted with the frame. He also has to intersect two quite distinct procedures, i.e. how the light falls on the object and the formation of image through optical device. All these works in his head but the result might be completely different and more dramatic then what the photographer thought of or it might even be vague. In photography we can never predict what might be triggering for the viewers or the photographer himself after they look at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Garry Winogrand's Photography Every day we witness events and experience moments that are engraved in our memories for possibly our whole lives. Those significant events shouldn't be simply remembered by memory but with physical evidence from photographs. Garry Winogrand is an artist that takes photographs of a plethora of different life events. Those events span from major political movements to a simple family fun day; as a result, there really is no shortage in the diversity of Winogrand's photograph. His black and grey photographs seems to capture unique moments in everyday life in a casual way. Thee photographs do not look like they were captured in a professional studio with perfect lighting; however, his work encompasses the everyday life of people and the events ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "The picture may discort; but there I always a presumption that something exists, or did exist which is like what's in the picture." (Sontag). In a photograph that Garry Winogrand capture, there is an adult couple each holding a baby monkey in their arms. This scene was taken in the streets of a busy city sidewalk. Not only is it a strange scene but it would have certainly been hard to believe if you did not see it with your own eyes. However, with the photograph that Garry Winogrand took, there is evidence that that scene actually existed. Even though there is probably an immensely high chance that the same scene would happen again, the photograph will always prove that the small event did exist. Another example would be when Garry Winogrand took a photograph of people laying on a grass field while there are black balloon covering the sky. It is an event that will be hard to duplicate. The balloon was captivating and Garry Winogrand made sure to prove to everyone that it did exist. It was indeed a beautiful sight because there was one single tree within these people and it added to the beauty of the event. Garry Winogrand tried to convey that principle in his photographs because he wanted to proof that these events were actually happening. Furthermore, he wanted to let people know that no one made to events up. With his photographs all the scenes that he saw can be proven ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This horrendous session came about when we both finished our final exam and we had nothing else to do. So we decided to take our friends phone and take some selfies. They came out pretty unflattering if I do say so myself. I looked like monster who just woke up from her nap. My face must have looked very inane during class. Anyways I chose this photo because it was the nicest one I could find of my face. Sarina cheated and only took a picture of half her face and has a very lethargic look. The main thing I want to do with my life is to be a world known photographer. I want to travel the world with my camera and show the world how beautiful earth is. I started collecting old fashion cameras at the age of twelve. I started collecting cameras because I liked the different styles and technology they came up with. When I was fifteen, I got a Nikon camera for my birthday from my grandparents. I captured images every day, I still use it, I use it for portraits and landscapes. I currently have eight different styles of cameras, including my favorite Fujifilm Polaroid. I always have a device on me that I can take pictures on. My Polaroid and Nikon are always in my car, and my phone is always with me. I love taking photos whenever I can. At family events, they usually find me behind the lens of a camera. • 15. Comic Story In Literature Just like traditional literature, comic books can be analyzed through narrative, structure, and plot. Since the narrative is one of the prime factors in storytelling, comics must have a strong narrative. If there is no narrative, there is no story. Although, it's important to keep in mind that stories are still stories, whether you're reading A Tale of two Cities or Watchmen. After all, a good story can be told in any medium at all. With this in mind, while analyzing parts of the narrative, one can observe that the nature of the comic book's medium contributes to the storytelling of good stories. Also, comic books just like literature can be analyzed through plot. While plot is not the end all of narrative, a poor plot can certainly compromise the value of the narrative. Unlike literature books that can go on and on, the comic book storyline needs to be told in a limited number of pages, and its executed through the sequential images. Like it has been said many times before, "a picture says a thousand words", and in the case of comic books, the pictures tell a story just as well or if not better than a lot of written words. Take this example from The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman: That whole passage of The Graveyard Book was converted into one page. Even with the absence of words, it's still possible to get the same feelings of thrill and anticipation just like in a page of book. Since comic books consists of being released as monthly issues, a comic's plot must be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Gustre Dore Reflection On Tuesday, July 11, 2017, I made a trip to the Denver Art Museum. I found a painting by Gustave Dore, a French painter from Paris, France. The piece was, The Family of Street Acrobats: the Injured Child painted in 1873. After studying this piece of art in person I noticed many different elements and characteristics in the actual painting. These are not seen in the photographed image of the painting that is on the Denver Art Museum Online. There are many visual elements that are taken away from a painting when it is made available in an online collections website. When I saw The Family of Street Acrobats: the Injured Child I immediately went up to it and I could see the texture of the paint, the line and the blobs on the mothers dress and the long lines of the back ground. The paint was raised, which you cannot observe in the online picture. The picture online was obviously edited. The color and light are changed significantly through the editing. It makes the painting look very light and you are able to see more detail without having to look at it for long. By making the painting brighter it took away from the original colors of the paint. The father is too bright. This change seems to alter the mood and energy that the painting is projecting. The size of the painting is misrepresented in the editing of it. When comparing the two you can see that the online image was cropped. This takes away the space at the very top of the painting. This is significant because you lose ... • 19. We Are A Camera, By Nick Paumgarten Although a memory may deteriorate over the span of years or even decades, a photograph will last a lifetime. Images are more than an object to have for safe keeping. In his article, "We Are A Camera," Nick Paumgarten discusses the uprising of the popular recording device known as the GoPro. This device is used to record events and experiences from different perspectives, whether that is from underwater or zip lining through a forest in a first–person view. Moreover, videos and photography allow people to capture images to reminisce about past experiences, to share these moments with others, and even remember those whom you have lost. There are countless debates about how distracting cell phones and other electronic devices can be however, they can still be used in positive ways, such as capturing images. Images are a way of recalling events or memories. Certainly, with these images a person would depict a picture far more vividly than what they could have conjured up by simply trying to remember the moment. After going through a great experience, people tend to want to reflect and rejoice at what they had done or gone through. The most memorable moment of my past would have to be my seventh birthday party. It was a small surprise in the middle of a park in Fort Lauderdale on a scorching hot day. I recall playing soccer on the grassy plains, receiving gifts and the abundance of laughter in the air. The only problem is, I only remember vague images in my mind that I pieced ... Cesar Aira Essay In Cesar Aira's novel El Pequeño Monje Budista, Napoleón Chirac, a French photographer, is led by The Little Buddhist Monk (literally, the littlest Buddhist Monk ever seen), to a not very well known temple in order to photograph its 'space'. Chirac's work consisted on, from the center (an arbitrary center) of the space, taking a series of pictures covering the perimeter and then digitally uniting them, which would result in one big horizontal image. This temple, located at the outside of a big Korean city (Seoul, we assume), is particularly empty, is not touristic at all, which is perfect for Chirac. However, after setting up his equipment, he realized how the other monks who were at the temple started to sabotage his shots. He had already explained to them that what he needed was to photograph the empty space, but despite the warning, they still were, as little kids, getting in the way and giggling while running away only in order to do it again. This is not a cinema that does not think, as we have seen. There is a cinema of the brain too for Deleuze, but there is as much passion and as much abstraction in one or the other they both are different ways towards the unthough (204). Analysis Of The Book ' Comic Party Poster ' Essay Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Manga comic–party–poster Summary: Just when high school nears the close, a Japanese student named Kazuki and his girlfriend, is pulled by his scheming best friend Taishi into the world of fan comics. As Kazuki's obsession with finishing his comic in time for the next convention threatens his schoolwork and his relationships, he must decide how he will use his time or risk losing Mizuki. STORY – 4.1 Tragically, it has been a long time since I watched the show, and clearly my methods changed over the years. From the fragments I do remember comes a great, clean story of one named Kazuki and his introduction into Manga (specifically doujinshi) that takes us on a journey through an industry. When most people think of Manga in America, they might compare it to Marvel Comics, which is somewhat misleading. Manga is not reserved for super–heroes nor to trite concepts that may be disgusting in America (see The Mask) but yet never quite puts us inside. This is not to say Comic Party attempts this, rather it expresses the deeply woven nature of the Manga universe that should give any foreigner a pause before stereotyping the industry negatively. This is perhaps the biggest appeal and weakness to Comic Party, in that as an educational comedy it seeks to balance self–deprecating jokes with giving its audience a better comprehension of the work involved, all while not coming off as boring or uninspired. Whether it succeeds is largely up to you, however ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Known as "the King of Photographic Picture Making," he began his life's work as a painter but would become one of the most influential photographers of the late 19th century. He was a prolific advocate for photography as an art form and is well known for his role in "pictorialism," which, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, is "an approach to photography that emphasizes beauty of subject matter, tonality, and composition rather than the documentation of reality." Robinson was one of the first photographers to setup a staged photo–shoot. He was known to create outdoor scenes in the studio where he could control the elements as well as the model. His preferred models were members of high society or paid actors rather than the unsophisticated peasants he was depicting because he felt that the actual peasants were "dull and awkward" and didn't fit in his picture perfect settings. He would pose his models to create his ideal scene within the genre. Since Robinson's goal was to create stills that resembled paintings, he took no issue with combining elements that were "real" with those that were staged. The effect he was trying to accomplish was known as the "pictorial effect," a subject that he delves into deeply in his book, Pictorial Effect in Photography: Being Hints on Composition and Chiaroscuro for Photographers, published in 1869. In his book, Robinson states, "any dodge, trick and conjuration of any kind is open to the photographer's use. It is his imperative duty to avoid the mean, the base and the ugly, and to aim to elevate his subject... and to correct the unpicturesque. a great deal can be done and very beautiful pictures made, by a mixture of the real and the artificial in a picture." Kathryn Strong Hansen's Essay 'In Defense Of Graphic Novels' Angie Rodriguez Patrick Vogelpohl English 120 17 December 2014 In the essay, "In Defense of Graphic Novels", Kathryn Strong Hansen explains the different opinions about using graphic novels in a classroom. When most people hear of a graphic novel, they assume it's a comic book and that it has no relevance in a classroom. Because they have pictures, they also assume that they are meant for children. Hansen explains, however, that students can analyze graphic novels the same way they would a prose–only novel. Graphic novels prevent this confusion from happening. With the pictures that go along with the text, students can understand exactly what the author is saying. Graphic novelist, David Small, confirms this in his interview by Julia Tindell. He says, "I know that the text is there to tell what the pictures can't and vise versa. They augment one another" (Small). For example in Blankets, there is a part where the main character, Craig, goes out to where he and his younger brother would go out to play when they were little. They remember about a cave that they had found once but every day they went back to it, it would get smaller and smaller until one day, it just disappeared. Craig then says, "But that memory is so dream–like–too eerie and beautiful and cryptic to be true" (538). From that text, you would most likely assume that the memory he was talking about is the one with the cave. By the image in Fig. 1, you can clearly see that the memory that he is really talking about is the memory of his old love interest, Reina. • 34. World War II Comic Books Failed Man has utilized graphics since before writing was invented to communicate their thoughts and feelings, and while for a period, the combination of both image and written word remained underutilized, the core idea behind 'comics' or 'graphic novels' continued to develop. The subject of these graphics range from early humans attempting to communicate information about animal migration patterns painted on the walls of caves, to mythological stories painted onto the surface of pottery. These images are made to be informative, or entertaining, but in general fail to deliver a message that moves beyond the delivery of information, and between good and bad. In both pre and post–World War II comic books failed to be much more than entertaining propaganda. Yet, eventually comics shifted towards darker, more psychological themes, and with this change in style came additional recognition and popularity for graphic stories as a medium. Following these developments, many have claimed that the driving force behind the economic and critical success of graphic stories created in this era was primarily due to the improvements in production values and sheer mass of content created. However, it is more likely that the change in subject matter affected the perception of comics due to the ability to evoke emotion in a fashion that just words and just pictures could not do by themselves. The perspective of the photograph is strategic in allowing the viewers to see from Klett's point of view. This angle places the viewer in the first person, connecting them directly to the image. Images of landscapes are often engrossing, Klett's piece does this on two planes. In the text, Visual Methodologies, author, Gillian Rose uses semiotics as a way to make sense of an image. The photographer makes the audience feel as if they are a part of the image, giving the audience a connection to the subject of the photograph. This allows power within the image to be equally distributed and shared between human and nature. The objects within the image, such as the watch, camera, and dark cloth connote time, preservation, and reflection. Klett's use of signs give his photo the purpose it needs to remain captivating. Within Klett's photo, icons, indexes, and symbols are all presented. The icon most prevalent in the image is the upside down image of Monument Valley. This iconic image represents that specific rock structure in the valley. This image is also a synecdochal sign, it is a part of this rocky range, representing the national park as a whole. The two indexes that stand out immediately are the camera and the dark cloth. When you see a camera– you immediately think of documentation or memories. When we think of something under the dark cloth or in a dark space we think of referees reviewing a play or the process of developing a photograph. When someone is under the dark cloth, it is a personal, capturing moment. This sign is a moment of silence and critical reflection. • 38. The Dark Knight Returns, By Jorge Luis Borges Essay Writer, Jorge Luis Borges says, "The things that are said in literature are always the same. What is important is the way they are said." Literature is such a broad, all encompassing term that much is lost in translation. This is part of the reason behind the ongoing brawl: what qualifies as literature? In the case of graphic novels, they are often cast aside by critics, deemed definitively inferior and lacking intellectual merit. However, this assumption does not hold up in today's world of literary work. Genres and mediums evolve every minute of every day, continuously changing the game. Even considering the evolution of traditional novels in modern society challenges the original denotation of literature. "As a consequence, the traditional characteristics [lose] their importance as the defining criteria of literary works of art" (Breuer para. 12). Due to the evolving world of literature, the definition of such must evolve as well, claiming a few necessary guidelines but fluctuating as required. The graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns, can be definitively classified as a work of literature through Frank Miller's approach to written language application, character establishment, and plot development. Perhaps the most inherent part of The Dark Knight Returns' literary qualification is the very use of written language. In simplest terms, literature is defined as "written works." One must not be swayed then by the comic aspect of graphic novels because the presence of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Scott McCloud's book, "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art", he relays the concept of simplification, and how to use it to bring more emphasis to the meaning of the drawing. In other words, McCloud is saying that through a process of breaking down a drawing to its rawest and most simplistic form, the piece itself becomes deeper in meaning. When looking at a finished image it should be apparent that the artist put thought into every detail, line, shape. McCloud makes a point in the statement that realistic art in these terms isn't as relatable to everyone because it is too specific, and this means that not everyone can easily relate. The point of an icon or logo is to make it easy to relate to, understand, or both in order to make the targeted audience remember the design and recognize it in the future. Since this was my first time reading a true comic book, I have a new appreciation for comic books. With the reading of Scott McCloud's, Understanding Comics, there are many elements that go into making a comic book a true comic. Applying the teaching of color that McCloud taught in his book to the comic, Batman: Year One, the color scheme that is used in certain panels help bring the story off the page and is another form of emotions being expressed. In Understanding Comics, McCloud defines comics as, "Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer" (McCloud, 1993, p. 9). ... This color scheme in particular does act a sunset in a way because at first, Gordon is safe, that is when the sunset is most beautiful. Then once he realizes he is in danger and being attacked, the color begins to fade darker, same as when the sun continues to set. Finally, once Gordon has tried to put up a fight and realizes who his attackers were, the last panel has a black background and Gordon is shown as the sunset color, hence when a sunset is over, there is darkness. The colors in this scene help you feel the pain that Gordon must have felt when being beaten by bats and just knowing he was being beaten just enough to get the message. In chapter eight of Understanding Comics, "A Word About Color", McCloud talked about how color can be used to expressed different roles. His six examples were: central role, dominant mood, depth, scenes being about color and sensation and environment (McCloud, 1993, p. 190–191). The Rabbits-Deconstruction of Visual Essay John Marsden's and Shaun Tan's epic picture book, "The Rabbits", is an allegorical fable about colonisation, told from the perspective of the natives. An unseen narrator describes the coming of 'rabbits' in the most minimal detail, an encounter that is at first friendly and curious, but later darkens as it becomes apparent that the visitors are actually invaders. My chosen image (above), embodies the overall style of the book which is deliberately sparse and strange. Furthermore, the buildings in the background are entirely formed by jigsaw pieces. Thus Tan presents us with a visual allegory of the rabbit society as manipulative and un– relentless nature. The small strip across the top of the visual, presents us with an alternate world that is natural and heaven–like where numbat–like creatures are suspended upon tree branches. The gaze of the numbat–like creatures leads us to the quote, "They didn't live in trees like we did". This symbolically represents the unprecedented manner in which the rabbits came and quickly "made their own houses". On the other hand, the artist works on the soundstage inventing his world from scratch. Before the photographic location productions start, Crewdson drives around upstate Massachusetts looking for interesting settings, which he then has prepared in an elaborate process. • 54. Ansel Adams Influence On Photography "When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence." – Ansel Adams. There are things in this world that cannot be explained with words and only a picture can get the meaning across to someone. At times there are neither words nor pictures that explain emotion and that is where silence and listening are heard. When are looking out into a landscape and we see the colors that make up the creation we want to capture that feeling in a picture and that is what Ansel Adams attempts to accomplish. Ansel Adams, a photographer, was inspired by the American way of life. Adam was born in San Francisco to a well off family, but that would change in the Panic of 1907. Adams father would ... • 56. Film, La Jetee As A Reference Point For My Discussion Essay Can a pictorial narrative be formed purely through the use of images? It is a question many have sought to answer, and one that is becoming increasingly relevant as our literary concepts evolve to keep pace with developments in modern technologies. I have chosen to use the ciné–roman designed by Bruce Mau from Chris Marker's 1962 science–fiction film La Jetée as a reference point for my discussion. The film is constructed almost entirely of still–images, shot through a Pentax camera. Involving the "future destruction of Paris," the film follows a prisoner haunted by the image of a woman from his childhood, sent through time by his controllers (Lupton 2005, 87). The ciné–roman presents the film's still–images in a graphic novel format, with English and French subtitles positioning the film's voice–over into text on the page. Ultimately, I will attempt to argue that images can be used to create a purely pictorial narrative, in reference to the theories of visual culture expressed by Barthes, Burgin, Berger and Baetens, among others. It is important to note that the ciné–roman exists independently from its predecessor: "the French ciné–roman is a novel or film scenario designed to read not necessarily in conjunction with the film upon which it is based" (Santoro 1996, 37). As such, while I will direct some attention to the discussion of the tension between the ciné–roman's and its cinematic predecessor, I have chosen to focus my deeper discussion on the implications of image ... • 58. The Walking Dead : The Game For this Media Product Analysis paper, I will be reviewing "The Walking Dead: The Game" from Telltale Games. "The Walking Dead: Season One" has a total of five episodes which were released digitally one episode at a time every two months from April 2012 to November 2012. Each game takes approximately two hours of gameplay. The Walking Dead universe does not use the term zombies, but "walkers" instead. The premise of the game revolves around the main character Lee Everett and a little girl named Clementine, who he meets at the beginning of the game and is set to protect her at all costs. On the way to find a better place or escape for survival, they meet several people and survival groups who may leave or die due to decisions that the players make. The main storyline does not stray too much and the choices that the players make affect more on character development and how the other characters in the game perceive Lee. There are several times in the game where players also get a little bit of action when Lee fights off the walkers or other dangerous people. However, the game is more focused on decision–making and especially quick–time events, where the player is given a time limit to make a decision. In a way, the player gets to play their own adventure and make the choices that they would make if they were in Lee's situation. The game plays a lot on real ethical issues or sticky situations that sometimes may not have a clear line on what is good or evil. It is all up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Nick Sousanis 'Second Chapter Unflattening' The well–known cliché goes "a picture says a thousand words" and this is an idea that Nick Sousanis explores in his book "Unflattening". The saying implies that images are able to speak volumes, more than words could ever express. Images convey different messages to people and in doing so evoke thoughts and emotions that words often cannot. Individuals interpret images based on their own ideas and experiences, therefore an image can be seen in many different perspectives creating diverse meanings from one single image. Since there are so many different perspectives it is easy to see how Sousanis images can convey several different concepts. Nick Sousanis' second chapter "The Importance of Seeing Double and Then Some" from his book "Unflattening", ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is easy to see how the image can convey many different concepts based on perception of individuals. When looking at the image it is typical for the eye to be drawn to the bottom right corner because of the dark sketch lines. While reading through the limited amount of text provided it guides the reader into the concept is wants to convey. However, by the use of images one can get many different thoughts and ideas without the restriction of words. The language used on this page discusses the "QUEST FOR REASON", "THE FEAR OF THE UNKOWN", and "DEPTHS OF LIGHT", and these ideas can all be seen solely through the image. The light is in the center of the page and from my perspective this can be seen as the earth being the center of universe. The lightness and darkness in the opposite corners of the pages can be seen as heaven and hell. The light line hatching in the top corner can be perceived as heaven because heaven is often seen as being above and correlated with lightness and white. Looking at the opposite corner of the image, there is dark shading that can be seen as a representation of hell. Hell has always been associated with darkness and as being below. This is just one interpretation of this image, while I see the message of heaven and hell being conveyed from this picture other people may see another concept. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Comic Analysis Palaeolithic cave drawings with sequences of images depicting a hunt are the earliest account of comics we have today. This type of sequential art must be considered historically speaking when attempting to unpack the definition of what are comics. Scott McCloud defines comics as juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response to the viewer. In order to better understand what a comic is , we can compare and contrast literary novels with comics through three main features: format, plot narrative and length. The exposition is the setting of the scene where early questions are answered such as setting place and time . The main characters are introduced as well as the point of view. In a comic, readers are invited to piece together setting, place and time visually . In the twelve volume comic serial entitled Blackhole the first series serves as the basis for what is to come much like a novel. The main character Chris Rhodes is introduced along with the setting which is in suburban Seattle in the 1970s in high school. The second part of a literary novel is the rising action which is the building of the tension. This building of tension can be seen in Blackhole when Chris has sex with Rob unprotected. The climax is the third part which is typically the most exciting part. The climax in Blackhole can be seen when Chris begins to show that she has caught the bug because she has had sex unprotected so she goes into hiding in the woods. The fourth part, the falling action, is when Chris begins to not have enough food and Rob disappears. Lastly is the resolution, which is the ending of the story. The ending of Blackhole ends on a cliff hanger with no clear resolution to what happened to Chris. In comparison, Blackhole followed a typical five stage story structure similarly to a literary novel even though most comics may not . This exhibit of a five part typical story structure depicts the idea of how a regular literary novel needs lengthy development. Length in comics may very greatly . However, the quantities of people who read and share comic books provide open pathway to idea sharing. The Legend of Chun Hyang I is an example of this cultural messaging through this medium. Written in 1992, as Asian cultures were joining the globalizing world, this manga represented cultural hybridity as a Korean folktale being represented by a Japanese company. The storyline is relatable for young girls who want to be independent no matter which country they are from. Chun Hyang as a character in the work is not close to the actual Korean storyline. However, she is closer to the ideal manga heroine who is pretty but brave, and independent but in love. Chun Hyang represents the move towards a more universal 'Asian ' feeling and closeness between the Japanese and Korean pop cultures. Chun Hyang is the story of a young girl who grows up without a father, her mother is a famous medicine woman. Chun Hyang, the main character, is a independent and strong willed young lady who fights back against the oppressive town head or Yang Ban. It is a stepping stone into the literature that is explored later on in life. As any entry level activity, it is expected that one should graduate from comics and go on to longer pieces of writing with no pictures. Lately however, there are less and less people willing to read. Words and pictures have a negative connotation as adult reading. McCloud states that it is normal for children to begin early literary life with the combination of words and pictures only so long as they "GROW OUT OF IT" (McCloud 739). McCloud does not put these words in bold because that is what he wants people to do; he does it because that is what he does not want people to do. McCloud is attempting to break the common held belief that a child should grow out of comics. In the next slide we see the figure of McCloud with his arms spread out opposite each other. One arm holding back books and the other holding back paintings. McCloud says that "traditional thinking has long held that truly GREAT works of art and literature are only possible when the two are kept at arm's length" (McCloud 740). A closer look reveals that the books he is holding back are some of the most renowned books ever written including the Holy Bible, "To Kill a Mockingbird", and "Moby Dick". • 74. Photorealism In Manet's A Bar At The Folies-Bergere Photorealism is a term that characterizes the artists whose work depends heavily on photographs and mixes together the real and the unreal. For example, Manet's A Bar at the Folies–Bergère utilizes photorealism to depict a scene from modern Parisian life: a young barmaid stands behind the bar of a bustling night–club, confronting the viewer with a worn–out, emotionless expression and seemingly awaiting her patron's order or request. The painting plays with our sense of reality by showing a strange man and the misaligned reflections of the barmaid and the champagne bottles in a mirror. Likewise, in Picture for Women, Jeff Wall emulates the internal structure of Manet's painting and incorporates elements such as the light bulbs and and poles to give the image spatial depth. This photograph shows a reflection in the mirror of a sparse studio room split into three panels with a woman on the left, a camera framed by a window in the center, and a man walking on the right. Both images utilize reflection to breach the limits of the naked eye's perspective and evoke a sense of mystery and ambiguity. This paper will argue that in Picture for Women and Bar at the Folies– Bergere, Jeff Wall and Manet utilize female protagonists and the motif of the mirror to examine spectatorship and movement in still art and challenge our traditional sense of reality and the concept of the male gaze. In both Manet's Bar and Wall's Picture for Women, the mirror challenges our common–sense perceptions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have chosen architecture as it is very different to fashion photography and looks at totally different materials and includes different characteristics. In the early years of photography, few if any photographers were specialists in any area other than commercial portraiture, which was the main area in which a living could be made from the new medium. Even thought the photo only consists of blue, it is made up of lots of different shades of blue. The lights on the building and around it stand out because they are a bright colour. I think the way the sea blue colour merges into the deep blue/black colour of the background works really well. The photograph doesn't really have a story to it, as there isn't much going on, it doesn't have energy or any movement to it at all. However it could easily be a scene used in a film, such as an establishing shot. The photo has a certain peaceful feel to it. It is soothing to look at; this is because it is a calm, quiet setting– you can almost feel your presence there, staring into the beautiful view. I think the reason that the photo has such a positive, relaxing feel to it is down to the fact that the composition of the photo reminds you of a deep blue sea or a clear black sky. The photo has strong verticals and horizontal, which emphasise a static feel and the negative space. The picture has a large depth of field with the two buildings the centre point of it. Only natural lighting is used for this photo, therefore getting the exact time of day right would have been essential. The photo also has some negative points to it. The angle at which the photograph is taken from makes the picture looks really flat and plain, For instance if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Armageddon as Positive Force : Ray Bradbury 's "The Highway" and Robert Kirkman 's The Walking Dead Who knew the end of the world as we know it could be a good thing? At least this is what the end of the world is shown to be in Ray Bradbury 's "The Highway" and Robert Kirkman 's The Walking Dead. In both stories, the apocalypse cleanses the world of the filth of civilisation, which is presented as something hindering the protagonists and mankind in general. The destruction of civilisation also allows the protagonists to return to a more primitive way of life, a way of life that is also freer and more fulfilling. The apocalypse destroys the social hierarchy that was in place, allowing people who were nobodies before the end of the world to rise up and become leaders and heroes. The end of the world is portrayed as a positive event in "The Highway" and The Walking Dead because it causes the destruction of civilisation. In both theses works, the hallmarks of contemporary civilisation, such as technology and modernity, are portrayed as bad things because they create lazy, entitled and dependant people. In Bradbury 's "The Highway", this is shown in the contrast between Hernando and the American tourists. Hernando, who represents a more natural way of life, is noble and hard–working.
