A Call For Action By Anita Roddick
A Call for Action
Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop relates, "The business of business should not be about money. It should be about responsibility. It should
be about public good, not private greed" (Selko, 2015). Very often when one thinks of the image and mantra of today's corporate culture in American,
one may visualize the character, Gordon Gekko, a fictional character in the 1987 film Wall Street who espoused the belief that, "Greed was good" and
"The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated"
(American Rhetoric, 2016). Well, it has been theorized that the evolutionist, Charles Darwin believed opposite of Gekko's statement. Human goodness
and acts of compassion is a hardwired survival tactic shown in many animal classifications such as dogs, primates, and humans. In fact, acts witnessed
by this author through National Geographic videos demonstrate monkeys and dogs ignoring humans who did not help another human or share
resources. It is in the interest of individuals as well as global companies to commit a sustainable compassionate culture beyond just social responsibility.
The class text dictates, "A manager's decisions are influenced by the culture in which he or she operates and the way they plan, organize, lead, and
control" (p. 47) ; and the planning function defines goals, establishes strategy, and develops plans" (p. 9) and illustrates how the modus

Characteristics of Business Leadership: The Definition...
A woman of fierce passions, boundless energy, unconventional idealism and sometimes diva–like temperament, Mrs. Roddick was one of Britain's
most visible business executives, and not just because of the ubiquitous and instantly recognizable Body Shop franchises. Working on behalf of
numerous causes – the rain forest, debt relief for developing countries, indigenous farmers in impoverished nations, whales, voting rights, anti–sexism
and anti–ageism, to name a few – Mrs. Roddick believed that businesses could be run ethically, with what she called "moral leadership," and still turn a
profit (The New York Times, 2007). Introduction In current business environments, leaders play a crucial role in operating the organization in

To abet in building success for the company, Anita Roddick tried to incorporate two main concepts within its core business (Stallwood, 2001). First
was to produce personal care products to earn profits and another was to create a medium of social welfare and search out environmental concerns.
At the initial level, Anita Roddick operated a restaurant and hotel and due to being overworked, she necessitated a change for herself and her
family. Anita and her husband, Gordon, needed money to survive with their two daughters. With some experience, Anita pondered on how she can
develop and make a different line of cosmetic products. After a lot of contemplating, Anita derived at a new formula that was composed of different
ingredients that she mixed together; which essentially was the mark of a new quality product. The Body Shop was situated between two funeral
parlors that always caused controversy and routed myriad business to the shop; the publicity of the shop became crucial (The Body Shop, 2012).
Anita did not have enough money to procure bottles or labels for her bottles so she created hand written reusable ones. From this, the era of recycling
was set in motion and six months later, Anita opened a second The Body Shop store (Werhane & Morland, 2011). During this epoch, banks were not
sanctioned to loan to women as they were only available for men; this became an obstacle for Anita and her major challenge. Because of Anita's
insufficient amount of funds,

The Body Shop was founded in 1976 in Brighton (UK) by Dame Anita Roddick. The Body Shop began life as a small outfit in Brighton selling just

there was a real focus on natural ingredients that were ethically sourced and cruelty–free (cosmetics products manufacture by methods that do not
involve experimentation on animals). The company has now more than 2100 franchised stores in over 60 counties.

His physical features were the reason why he had to use more energy than the other horses when they were running, and that requires more food to

did not like Seabiscuit. Once Seabiscuit was trained, Sunny Jim tried to get rid of him by entering him into claiming races, where thoroughbred

Women go into leadership – female style or male style?

The debate about the difference in leadership style of women and men continues to attract attention since women make strides into leadership position
dominated mainly by men. Men have long been holding these leadership roles and have defined styles accepted by people. Therefore, it is not
surprising that women are usual the focus in terms of the discussion on gender difference in leadership styles. There seems to be great disagreement
about the behaviour of women and men actually performing such roles (Eagly, 2001). This disagreement on this focus can be divided into two groups.

In other words, communal aspects are more presented in a transformational leadership style. While transformational leaders are portrayed to have a
personalized view of each co–worker and they often take into account their colleagues' individual needs and development (Eagly, 2003).
Based on Eagly and Johannesen–Schmidt' theory, female and male forms of leadership and empowerment seem to be different. Communal and
transformational characteristics are more presented by women than men. So some women exhibited an open and participatory leadership style.
Additionally, women are perceived to work harder and take their work more seriously, and women are less concern with salary than the recognition of
a good–done of job (Alvesson, 2009).
The focus of the debate concentrates on: In what context leadership style shows a similarity or a slight difference between women and men and is
there a specific female form of leadership? This documentary shows the different leadership styles of women by case studies. It will investigate
whether or perhaps there is a specific female style of leadership preferred by a majority of women.

She risked selling alternative body care products. Nevertheless, she dealt with it with optimism. In order to face success, it is of crucial importance to
think of the ways by which the business model will thrive in the marketplace. Another is to assess the strengths and opportunities of the business.
Lastly, it is always important to innovate, as this has always described entrepreneurs (Baghai, Coley, and White, 2000). Innovations are proven to
increase the business' performance. During Christmas last year, upon launching a new product, i.e. a strong Christmas gift range, and improving
customer services, operating profits from the division boosted to 17% to ₤11.7 million (Geary, 2005). This is a recent event in the innovation
strategies of Body Shop. Schumpeter (1939), as cited in Mintrom, Schneider and Teske (1995), asserts that an entrepreneur functions to innovate, which
means devising new production function out of the existing factors of production. In simpler terms, an entrepreneur is one who introduces a new
product or a product that deviates from the ordinary. Such is the basic idea or definition of an entrepreneur from which its modern definitions have
developed. Apart from the above, there is something about the packaging of the Body Shop products. Roddick started with small bottles since that was
what she was complaining on. According to Kassaye and

Water Scarcity: Privatization is Not the Solution Essay
Water is vital for humanity as it sustains human life and is a fundamental aspect in most of the products which are consumed by an average living
person. This is why water supplies are crucial, because through them this substance is provided sadly these services are being perturbed by various
obstacles that at the end are provoking a severe water scarcity around the globe. This has been attempted to be solved by privatising water services,
since it is believed that water available for free has generated an overexploitation of this resource. However, this apparent solution is encouraging the
problem due to the inefficiency and corruption of these companies. That is why the purpose of this paper, before all else, will be to analyse the... Show

Nevertheless, the existing supplies will not be able to satisfy the increasing number of people, this is supported by Mashhood who claimed in 2012
that a growing population requires more water (addressing the Texas' water needs) which the state says cannot come from one source. Moreover,
this situation has been affecting every corner of the planet as the decrease in the water supplies and the rapid increment in the population will not
improve in the future, since these both elements are seemingly going to continue this trend. Nonetheless, not only these factors are reinforcing this
catastrophe, it is also the latent worldwide social inequality that is inducing a disproportion of the provision of water around the globe. Fresh water
sources subsist in most countries, despite this an inconsistent price for this substance prevails in the developing world, where the cost for it is the
highest but the income of these areas is not. On the other hand, the first world nations represent the contrast of this case because they maintain a
formidable profit and an accessible financial value for water. This means that water scarcity is not suffered by the lack of physical sources, it is
surfacing due to the absence of economic resources of parts of the public who are not able to afford this vital component of human life. A
demonstration of this is seen in Chochabama, Bolivia where riots occurred by cause of a rise in

The Body Shop: Corporate Social Responsibility
CSR is how companies control their business processes to provide an overall positive impact on society. There are many factors that determine how
socially responsible a business is, but alongside these are the benefits and costs relating to the level of CSR produced in this essay, I will be analysing
companies from the retail industry and a car manufacturer to discuss the potential costs and benefits to both business and their stakeholders of CSR.
The Body Shop is well known for being an extremely ethical company. Because they do not use any ingredients that have been tested on animals, they
have to pay a higher place to suppliers for these products than Primark for example, who pay an extremely low price for their stock. Because of the ...

This will also help the environment that people are growing up in to become a more pleasant place to be. It also gains customer loyalty which will
be a positive, especially in the long term if the car industry does deteriorate. However, the long term strategy has already taken 20 years and there is
still an uncertainty surrounding how much longer this project will take to be completed. There is also the point that no other car manufacturer has
ever produced a car that will only emit water vapour, so there is no proof that this is actually possible, which could prove to be a waste of time and
money for BMW.
The main factor that the stakeholders of a business are interested in is the amount of profit that is produced, which can then be paid to them through
dividends. If a percentage of the profits are being paid out to aid CSR in cases such as community projects, then less money is going to the
stakeholders. This point makes having CSR present in a business costly.
However, there are a huge number of benefits which I feel outweigh the main cost and once major point that needs to be considered is the extremely
positive reputation businesses can build up which will likely lead to customer loyalty. In the long term, this will be extremely helpful to the business in
the case of the economic climate falling as the level of demand will not decrease to the extent of making a significant difference to

Accounting Theory and Practice Reflection Essay
To over view the knowledge we learnt from accounting theory and practice, the main thing I can conclude that is the tendency of accounting will shift
away from technical way to people's behaviour way. By understanding what should do, we should ask why and how we could improve and change it
into a better way. This essay aims to explain how the theoretical material that we learn in lectures can be developed under a real practical manner.
When talking about accounting, the first thing we should know is the history of its development. Traditionally, the development is from inductive to
deductive. Inductive theory assume what is done by the majority is the most appropriate practice. However, It did not seek to evaluate the logic or
merit of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The answer should begin with the new role of accounting. To be ethic, to be responsible to the society should be the new role of accounting in society.
That's the reason critical perspective accounting have been put forward. It is a theory that questions prevailing social order and how accounting
practices actually contribute to inequities. One breach of it is to provide a sustainability report or tribe bottom line that report the social, environment
and economic. Regulation is an important way to enforce ethic and accountability of business. Through the unit, we can see there are some argument
against regulatory. Under the free market approach, even without regulation there are private economic–based incentives for the business to provide
credible info to outside parties, to avoid an increase in cost of operations. When there is a free market, the theory of market for managers and market
for corporate takeovers assume managers' previous performance will impact on how much remuneration they command in future, or whether they
would be replaced by an existing management team, they will be encouraged to adopt strategies to maximise the value of their organization. The
assumption is based on the agency theory, which focuses on the self–interest motivation. However, self–interest may create lots of issues as we
discussed earlier, holds that regulation

The Various Leadership Styles
Leadership There are various leadership styles that are employed in the process of ensuring that organizations perform at their best. One fact is that
not a single leadership style qualifies to be used in all the organizations due to the diversity in the nature of organizations and what they deal in. each
organization will adapt a given leadership style depending on the nature of the business they engage in as well as the leader they have.
Transformational Leadership Under this leadership style, the leader is a true leader who strives to inspire the entire team through having a shared
vision concerning the future of the organization as well as the team members. This type of leader is highly visible within the organization and they also
spend a lot of time communicating. It is worth noting however that they do not necessarily lead from the front as would be though but this type of
leaders will delegate responsibilities quite a lot to the team members. They are noted to have an infectious enthusiasm and still will need support by
detailed people. Transformational leadership is further defined as one that facilitates a redefinition of a people's mission and vision, a renewal of their
commitment and the restructuring of their systems for goal accomplishment. It is a relationship of mutual stimulation and elevation that converts
followers into leaders and may convert leaders into moral agents. Hence, transformational leadership must be grounded in moral foundations.'

Realism In Saaam Bombay
Italian neorealism sought to portray the subject matter at hand truthfully and without adding any sort of artistic touch. A cinematic movement
dedicated to portraying a post war Italy that was slumped into an economic and moral depression. This portrayal is meant to highlight the general
Italian psyche at the time. And films of this movement typically reflect everyday life of the Italians including poverty, oppression, injustice and
desperation. What we perceive as stories as an audience are everyday realities of the "actors". In order to capture a genuine sense of realism, the
production of Salaam Bombay! (1988) took a unique approach. Real street children of Bombay were gathered together and an account of their lives
was taken. The conducting of these interviews served to provide an authentic insight into what would be the most appropriate stories to adapt. This
evolved into the screenplay, filled with realist episodic storylines across a range of characters. A major theme in Salaam Bombay! (1988) is one of
migratory identity. This urban migration of the populace to cities created a sense of being lost in the crowd which was depicted cinematically... Show

After the boom of the third industry and the foundation of WTO, companies are now facing more severe competitions than ever before, not only
domestically but also internationally. Therefore, figuring out how can we survive the competition and stand out from the others have been put ahead of
the schedule of plenty of enterprises. While many others are scrambling for marketing their invariable products–paying more attention to propaganda,
packaging price strategies etc. some other have found it more crucial to be innovative. But that is not enough, to achieve greater success, one must
combine proper management and adequate entrepreneurial part, and this technique has later evolved into the term "entrepreneurial management". In
this essay, I will mainly talk about how companies using the "entrepreneurial management" make themselves distinguished from the others and what
value they create through this strategy by studying the case: The Body Shop International Plc. First of all, I will give a brief introduction to the
background of The Body Shop International Plc. Then the essay will go further into the definition of the Entrepreneurial Management Model, which is
introduced to people by Dr. David Rae (2007), and how The Body Shop explains the concept of the model by illustrating the management strategies the
company uses and the entrepreneurial skills it adopts respectively.

Broken promises
Thanks in great part to its "green" image British company Body Shop has prospered in the 80s. In the 90s the firm tried to increase its world
visibility linking its image to Brazil 's rainforest and approaching the Brazilian Kayapo Indians with a program they called `Trade Not Aid. ' The
association generated a barrage of free and laudatory media stories about the activities of Body Shop. More recently however this image has been
bruised. Is the Body Shop social conscience just a sham?

Of this, $100,000 went toward the purchase of a used aircraft and initial expenses. The rest of the money was never accounted for. In 92 and 93,
Gordon Roddick, Anita 's husband and BSI 's executive director, brought four Body Shop country head franchisers to the Indian communities, charging
them $25,000 each. Again, the Indians never saw any of this money.
After one of Anita Roddick 's earliest visits, she announced that Body Shop would extend the project to other Mebengokre villages. They began
competing for Body Shop 's favor, which strained relations among the traditionally egalitarian culture. Roddick and Body Shop never made good on
their promise.
In the meantime, Body Shop began heavily promoting its links to the Kayapo. It announced what it called the "first ever" intellectual property rights
agreement. However, the Kayapo had agreed to nothing. In 1993, a group of 30 Kayapo chiefs were hastily called by Gordon Roddick to a meeting in
BrasГlia, capital of Brazil. The chiefs happily believed that Body Shop was at last going to make good on its promise to expand purchases of nut oil.
What they did not know was that Body Shop had recently gotten word that the press was about to report that it had never reached an intellectual
property rights agreement with the Kayapo. The chiefs were stunned and frustrated when it became clear that Body Shop was trying to get the chiefs to
legitimize the agreement, which still had not been negotiated.

Women And Leadership
Title:
Women and leadership – female style or male style?
The Pitch:
The debate about the difference in leadership style of women and men continues to attract attention since women make strides into leadership position
dominated mainly by men. Men have long been holding these leadership roles and have defined styles accepted by people. Therefore, it is not
surprising that women are usual the focus in terms of the discussion on gender difference in leadership styles. There seems to be great disagreement
about the behaviour of women and men actually performing such roles (Eagly, 2001). This disagreement on this focus can be divided into two groups.
One is the no–difference camp, who commonly agreed that there are few differenced in the leadership style of female and male leaders. The other is
the gender–stereotypic camp who believed the existence of crucial differences in the leadership style between both (Alvesson, 2009).
Leadership style is usually viewed as relatively stable patterns of behavior that are represented by leaders. In the circumstance of leadership, agentic and
communal features seem especially relevant. For example, agentic features such as independent, dominant and competitive are more attached to men
than to women. While communal features such as helpful, kind, gentle, sympathetic and personal sensitive are strongly occupied by women than men
(Eagly, 2003). In addition, according to Eagly and Johannesen–Schmidt (2001), the difference between agentic and

Roddick started with small bottles since that was what she was complaining on. They, lesser materials should be used to produce smaller, thinner and

Personality has much to say in defining Roddick's success. In Roddick's eyes, Body Shop succeeded because of two reasons. Economic survival of
her family, especially during its beginnings, was a primary driving factor; and, the passion to establish a shop of her own and to engage in trading
was the other. She therefore succeeded not because of a capitalist goal, which is profit. What she did was she thought of ways to survive in the market.

Introduction
Over the recent years, companies tend to achieve competitive advantage as well as tranquil business operations by incorporating social and

he looked straight through my eyes, deep into my mind," (McEwan 21–22). McEwan uses hyperbole in describing how the father looked "deep into
[Robert's] mind", with the use of intrusive language adding to the notion of the father having immense, almost supernatural, power. Robert even
refers to his father as God. McEwan demonstrates the father's power by contrasting the verbs "glanced" and "looked". The verb "glanced"
represents a timid and quick action which gives Robert less authority and power in this scene. On the other hand, "looked" represents a more
authoritative and attention demanding action performed by the father, which causes a shift of tone and focus. The first part of the extract is all about
the sisters, making Robert in some ways invisible, but now with the father looking directly at Robert, it brings the attention of the narrative away
from Eva and Maria as Robert gets singled out for judgment. This change of focus creates a shift from the fun and lighthearted tone earlier on when
the sisters were playing dress up to a more serious tone when introducing the father. After Robert's father looks deep into Robert's mind he asks, "'Tell
me, Robert, what have you been doing this afternoon,'" (McEwan 23). As one of the three points of dialogue in the extract, the father's question creates
a significant amount of distance between the children and him due to the formality in his tone. The father's decision to single out Robert from his
sisters in the question serves not only to further isolate Robert but also display the father's wisdom and power. The father's knowledge of Robert's

A Call For Action By Anita Roddick

  • 1. A Call For Action By Anita Roddick A Call for Action Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop relates, "The business of business should not be about money. It should be about responsibility. It should be about public good, not private greed" (Selko, 2015). Very often when one thinks of the image and mantra of today's corporate culture in American, one may visualize the character, Gordon Gekko, a fictional character in the 1987 film Wall Street who espoused the belief that, "Greed was good" and "The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated" (American Rhetoric, 2016). Well, it has been theorized that the evolutionist, Charles Darwin believed opposite of Gekko's statement. Human goodness and acts of compassion is a hardwired survival tactic shown in many animal classifications such as dogs, primates, and humans. In fact, acts witnessed by this author through National Geographic videos demonstrate monkeys and dogs ignoring humans who did not help another human or share resources. It is in the interest of individuals as well as global companies to commit a sustainable compassionate culture beyond just social responsibility. The class text dictates, "A manager's decisions are influenced by the culture in which he or she operates and the way they plan, organize, lead, and control" (p. 47) ; and the planning function defines goals, establishes strategy, and develops plans" (p. 9) and illustrates how the modus ... • 5. Characteristics of Business Leadership: The Definition... A woman of fierce passions, boundless energy, unconventional idealism and sometimes diva–like temperament, Mrs. Roddick was one of Britain's most visible business executives, and not just because of the ubiquitous and instantly recognizable Body Shop franchises. Working on behalf of numerous causes – the rain forest, debt relief for developing countries, indigenous farmers in impoverished nations, whales, voting rights, anti–sexism and anti–ageism, to name a few – Mrs. Roddick believed that businesses could be run ethically, with what she called "moral leadership," and still turn a profit (The New York Times, 2007). To abet in building success for the company, Anita Roddick tried to incorporate two main concepts within its core business (Stallwood, 2001). First was to produce personal care products to earn profits and another was to create a medium of social welfare and search out environmental concerns. At the initial level, Anita Roddick operated a restaurant and hotel and due to being overworked, she necessitated a change for herself and her family. Anita and her husband, Gordon, needed money to survive with their two daughters. With some experience, Anita pondered on how she can develop and make a different line of cosmetic products. After a lot of contemplating, Anita derived at a new formula that was composed of different ingredients that she mixed together; which essentially was the mark of a new quality product. The Body Shop was situated between two funeral parlors that always caused controversy and routed myriad business to the shop; the publicity of the shop became crucial (The Body Shop, 2012). Anita did not have enough money to procure bottles or labels for her bottles so she created hand written reusable ones. From this, the era of recycling was set in motion and six months later, Anita opened a second The Body Shop store (Werhane & Morland, 2011). During this epoch, banks were not sanctioned to loan to women as they were only available for men; this became an obstacle for Anita and her major challenge. The Body Shop began life as a small outfit in Brighton selling just 25 products. Moreover, this situation has been affecting every corner of the planet as the decrease in the water supplies and the rapid increment in the population will not improve in the future, since these both elements are seemingly going to continue this trend. Nonetheless, not only these factors are reinforcing this catastrophe, it is also the latent worldwide social inequality that is inducing a disproportion of the provision of water around the globe. Fresh water sources subsist in most countries, despite this an inconsistent price for this substance prevails in the developing world, where the cost for it is the highest but the income of these areas is not. On the other hand, the first world nations represent the contrast of this case because they maintain a formidable profit and an accessible financial value for water. This means that water scarcity is not suffered by the lack of physical sources, it is surfacing due to the absence of economic resources of parts of the public who are not able to afford this vital component of human life. There are many factors that determine how socially responsible a business is, but alongside these are the benefits and costs relating to the level of CSR produced in this essay, I will be analysing companies from the retail industry and a car manufacturer to discuss the potential costs and benefits to both business and their stakeholders of CSR. There is also the point that no other car manufacturer has ever produced a car that will only emit water vapour, so there is no proof that this is actually possible, which could prove to be a waste of time and money for BMW. The main factor that the stakeholders of a business are interested in is the amount of profit that is produced, which can then be paid to them through dividends. If a percentage of the profits are being paid out to aid CSR in cases such as community projects, then less money is going to the stakeholders. This point makes having CSR present in a business costly. One fact is that not a single leadership style qualifies to be used in all the organizations due to the diversity in the nature of organizations and what they deal in. each organization will adapt a given leadership style depending on the nature of the business they engage in as well as the leader they have. Transformational Leadership Under this leadership style, the leader is a true leader who strives to inspire the entire team through having a shared vision concerning the future of the organization as well as the team members. This type of leader is highly visible within the organization and they also spend a lot of time communicating. It is worth noting however that they do not necessarily lead from the front as would be though but this type of leaders will delegate responsibilities quite a lot to the team members. They are noted to have an infectious enthusiasm and still will need support by detailed people. Transformational leadership is further defined as one that facilitates a redefinition of a people's mission and vision, a renewal of their commitment and the restructuring of their systems for goal accomplishment. Robert, the narrator, revisits the time that his parents left him and his sisters home alone in his effort to see if his sisters did, in fact, hate him for telling on them. During their parents' absence, Robert followed his sisters into their parents' room and watched them play dress up with their mother's belongings. After an afternoon of playing in the empty house, Robert and his sisters sit down for dinner with their father in which Robert notes, "I glanced up and he looked straight through my eyes, deep into my mind," (McEwan 21–22). McEwan uses hyperbole in describing how the father looked "deep into [Robert's] mind", with the use of intrusive language adding to the notion of the father having immense, almost supernatural, power. Robert even refers to his father as God. McEwan demonstrates the father's power by contrasting the verbs "glanced" and "looked". The verb "glanced" represents a timid and quick action which gives Robert less authority and power in this scene. On the other hand, "looked" represents a more authoritative and attention demanding action performed by the father, which causes a shift of tone and focus. The first part of the extract is all about the sisters, making Robert in some ways invisible, but now with the father looking directly at Robert, it brings the attention of the narrative away from Eva and Maria as Robert gets singled out for judgment. This change of focus creates a shift from the fun and lighthearted tone earlier on when the sisters were playing dress up to a more serious tone when introducing the father. After Robert's father looks deep into Robert's mind he asks, "'Tell me, Robert, what have you been doing this afternoon,'" (McEwan 23). As one of the three points of dialogue in the extract, the father's question creates a significant amount of distance between the children and him due to the formality in his tone. The father's decision to single out Robert from his sisters in the question serves not only to further isolate Robert but also display the father's wisdom and power.
