Chapter 4– Leadership in the 21st Century
Leadership is very important to most of us because we either like being guided by someone (which
means being under someone else's leadership) or we are the type who like to take matters into our
own hands. This is technically how we are today (and have always been), where we are either
followers or leaders. Now, each one of these characteristics has their pros and cons, which means
that it is alright to be a follower but up to a certain point. On the other hand, being a leader is a good
thing too, but there are several steps that need to be followed if you want to be qualified as such.
We will not spend too much time on why it is sometimes good to be a follower because it is not the
subject of this chapter, but there are some important points that need to be clarified here before we
carry on. Let's start by defining leadership. What is leadership? Leadership concerns all the
characteristics or activities of a leader that are meant at guiding, and inspiring others. So, this means
that a leader would have to show the following characteristics:
– He/she will have to be charismatic.
– He/she will have to be able to take his/her own initiatives.
– He/she will have to be confident about every important decision he/she makes.
– His/her actions have to serve as examples and inspire others.
– Last, but not least, a leader should always leave a legacy behind him/her.

Culture was and always going to be alive, it never dies. However, today is different, culture is
spreading rapidly, and it became vital to acknowledge at least the basics of each culture. Due to
multiplicity of cultures within societies, not any leader could lead a group of followers, but only
prototype leaders who are needed to lead diverse organizations nowadays. Leadership becomes
difficult; it requires awareness of one's culture and skills to navigate within several cultures.

Critical Congenital Heart Defects are abnormalities of the heart structure that are present at birth.
These occur because of incomplete or abnormal development of the fetus' heart. These defects can
cause severe mortality within the newborn stage (Goldstein, 2013, p.1). Several are known to be
linked to genetic disorders such as Down syndrome and others are thought to be linked to
environmental factors that women can be exposed to while pregnant. The cause of most CCHD's is
unknown.
Symptoms of significant heart defects include but are not limited to, rapid breathing, difficulty
feeding, and blueness in the lips, excessive sweating, and fatigue. A common feature of many forms
of congenital heart disease is hypoxemia.
Newborns with CCHD are susceptible to serious and sudden worsening clinical status, in the first
days and weeks of life. Some babies born with a heart defect may appear healthy at first and are sent
home with their families before their heart defect is detected. It is estimated that about 300 infants
with an unrecognized Critical congenital heart defect (CCHD) are discharged each year from
newborn nurseries in the United States. These babies are at risk of having serious complications and

To be an effective leader you need to give subordinates what is missing in their environment by
helping them balance for their lack of abilities in certain areas (Northouse, 2013). The concept
behind leaders and followers is a continuation of the situational approach, (Northouse, 2013) "which
suggests that a leader must adapt to the development level of subordinates". This led to a more
developed theory where leaders focus on motivating employee in other to enhance their
performance and satisfaction thus path–goal theory was born, the link between the style a leaders
uses and different kinds of subordinate in a work setting (Northouse, 2013). Although subordinates
know that they will be successful if they believe that the payoff for their work is worthwhile, a
theory was put into place to help guide the leaders in the right direction when it comes to
subordinates characteristics and task characteristic. Kelly stated that for someone to be accepted as a
leader you have to a group of followers who wants to follow you (Kelly, 2009). The roles of leaders
and followers within a certain organisation stems from the path–goal–theory, which breaks down the
behaviours into four main ones;

One of the most thought of and unanswered questions that we humans ponder over is, " what is the
meaning of life?" We might not know the answer to that question, but what we can do is look at our
lives and the lives around us and compare it to the Hero's Journey. Now the Hero's Journey is an, "
