My Grab Bag Speech
I have never taken a public speaking course before getting into college, finding myself too stressed
to calm down in the class of CC–100–11. I experienced the most anxious moment before I did my
Grab Bag speech. Though I was so nervous, I finally finished it with all my efforts. In general, I feel
that my Grab Bag speech is good enough for me as the first challenge, despite of the lack of
experience in preparation, missing parts of the outline and the overwhelming anxiety. Therefore, I
also give myself some advice and set an aim to achieve.
Before the delivering of the speech, preparation is crucial given that it gives the speaker a clear clue
of what his should talk about, how he can organize his speech and how he can perform well in front
of specific groups of audiences. Once my topic is decided, according to Joshua, I should further
narrow my topic and find the most three points, which are the "magic numbers (136)", by going
through the general speech purpose. In this case, my purpose is "to inform or teach" about myself,
thus I chose "anime", "horror movie", and "spicy food". I started preparing through this point, yet I
failed to consider more about my "organization". In my original speech outline, I simply put these
all three things together without considering any order. As it says that "you want to do so in a way
that is manageable to you as a speaker and memorable to a listening audience (Joshua, 135)",
speaker should better to create an organized speech for audience. Considering that I want to
emphasize who I am, I should use topical order which tells different characteristics. By correcting
my original speech outline, the "spicy food" which tells about my identity should go first, then
"horror movie" goes next, and at last my favorite "anime" on which I should strongly emphasize
should end the speech.
Additionally, I find out that I should change my use in language for the opening and summary. It's
obvious that "often the thesis statement overlaps significantly with the purpose of a speech, but not
always (Joshua, 87)." I started my speech thesis by saying "So today I am going to show you three
artifacts which are all my favorites and can determine who I am. They are anime, horror movie and
spicy

King And Douglass Similarities
Have you ever heard of the speech "I Have a Dream" from the late Martin Luther King Jr.?
You'd be pretty sure many people have heard of it, but has anyone ever really read it and thought
about it? This could be like "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery," a piece of work produced by
Frederick Douglass. "They both argued that African–Americans have a natural right to equality"
(Renfro 1). Douglass once said, "The white man's happiness cannot be purchased by the black man's
misery." Here is just another point of there not being enough equality for being an African American
during those times of struggle. The fact that King and Douglass had used their oral power to try and
fight throughout their lives was a very substantial task. They are ... Show more content on

They came to be very influential people for the people of their time and for many years up to now.
King and Douglass also had their staple in time for being great Civil Rights activists. They played
key parts in the fight to lead blacks from their lack of power and equality for themselves. Having the
struggles to deal with within slavery and segregated times, blacks wanted to band together. King
was vital in the making of acts during those times, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ("Martin
Luther King Jr." 2). This act was what outlawed most of the discrimination for colored people.
Douglass had his own contributions, but they were in some cases not as major as the things King put
forward to gain equality for blacks. As time went on the two began earning their unparalleled
oratory skills. With the power of just their voices and hands they were granted with so much more
notoriety. "Both of them have similar oratory styles. They both had the amazing ability to move their
audience to action"(Renfro 1). They were also publishers and produced many great pieces of work.
"Douglass published three versions of his autobiography during his lifetime, revising and expanding
on his work each time. My Bondage and My Freedom appeared in 1855. In 1881, Douglass
published Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, which he revised in 1892" ("Frederick

Speaking And Communication: Speaking, And, Or Communication
In the past, I have participated in a lot of classes and professional training dealing with many
different types topics, but unfortunately, public speaking and or communications played very little
roles in these classes. I will be talking about my past experiences public speaking and what I'm
expecting to gain out of SVC 101. I have been in the US Air Force for 12.5 years now, I did not do
any real Professional Military Education (PME) until about the five year mark where I went through
Airman leadership school, (ALS), where we dabbled very briefly on public speaking. Fast Forward
7 years later I honestly can't remember much from the class. Since then I have had the opportunity
to do a couple public speeches, some of which have been in front of rather large crowds. I can
remember waiting to get up in front of everyone and not being nervous at ... Show more content on

I always try to give my undivided attention to the presenter because I know he/she probably hates
standing in front of everyone just as much as I hate being part of the crowd but they have to do it.
I've also seen a couple times the presenter freeze up and almost forgot what they're on stage for, this
honestly might be one of my worst fears. My girlfriend really likes dressing up and going to balets,
plays and musical events around Charleston, one night she was finally able to talk me into going to
see a ballet which was sleeping beauty. I had never been to a professional ballet before this point. I
was really intrigued how the dancers could tell the story by with dancing, facial expressions and
music. It really goes to show that not all forms of communication is done through speech, you can
get a lot out of it with someone's body expressions. I have become a little more aware of this and
have been trying very diligently on bettering my

Hitler's Speech : The Impacts Of Adolf Hitler And Donald...
Every person's actions have effected history in some way or another. Some people make a bigger
impact than others. Throughout history, countless speeches given by countless men and women have
marked their place in history, and some have changed entire nations or even impacted the world.
Some of these great speeches were given by Nazi leader Adolf Hilter, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
and our president today Donald Trump. These great orators gave powerful speeches that had a large
impact and were more than just words. These speeches were a combination of the emotion behind
the words, their style and confidence while presenting, and the energy brought forth. Initially, one of
the orators that had massive influence on the world was Adolf Hitler. Hitler persuaded his audiences
to follow despite the fact he was at fault for the death or 21 million people and had conquered many
nations. He gave thousands of persuasive speeches but what made them so special was that he could
lead entire nations to follow him. According to Bruce Loebs, Hitler's success was due to his
charisma. He also stated, "He learned how to become a charismatic speaker, and people, for
whatever reason, became enamored with him." Many of these people were so willing to follow
Hitler because of the economic stress Germany was in at the time. Hitler spoke so confidently, as if
he had all the right answers. This lead to Hitler receiving full support during his rise in the 1930s.

Adolf Hitler: One of the Most Talented Orators in History ...
Throughout the course of time there have been many world renowned orators, that have forever
changed history. The power to speak and captivate an audience is a gift that not many possess. There
are have been numerous leaders throughout the world that have achieved this gift and have put it to
use. There have been both positive and negative outcomes of public speaking by famous leaders.
Whether it was African–American civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., changing the world
and the views of people for the better with his "I Have A Dream" speech, or German dictator, Adolf
Hitler, pushing his anti–semitic views through his Nazi speeches, people listened. People will

Most Socialist leaders were Jews so he felt that the two had something to do with each other, which
made him dislike both the Jews and Socialists. In May 1919, the German Army overthrew the
Socialist Republic. Hitler being one of the people fighting, was arrested, held and accused of being a
Socialist. To prove that he was not a Socialist, he agreed that he would help find Socialist soldiers to
be executed. Through this experience he became a Political Officer. For this position, his main duty
was to educate and lecture the soldiers on current politics. Hitler had a very large audience of people
listening to him which was something completely new for him. Based on Hitler's public speaking
talent, he was asked to join a party called the German Worker's Party by Anton Drexler. This party
had Anti–Semitic views and a strong sense of German Nationalism which made it easy for Hitler to
fall into the group. Shortly after joining the group, Hitler was named as the Propaganda Manager.
Many people joined the group as a result of hearing Hitler's public speeches. The GWP was later
nicknamed the Nazi Party. When this nickname took place, Hitler became the new leader. Hitler
took both the Nazi Party and Germany to many new levels. He became a dictator soon after gaining
control of the Nazi Party. Just as before, he targeted the Jewish community. Hitler was the main
person in charge of the Holocaust. During the Holocaust, millions of Jewish people were

Critical Response Essay Final
'I have a Dream' – Critical Response Essay
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– How does 'I have a Dream' By Martin
Luther King conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a persuasive speech, and for what
purpose? ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– I have chosen the question
"How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre, and for what
purpose?" I have decided to analyse Martin Luther King's classic Civil Rights Movement speech "I
have a Dream" and how the structure of the speech creates a persuasive aspect for the audience. This
task refers back to Part 1 of the English Language and Literature Course. The essay will address
these key points: 1. Repetition at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The technique of Anaphora is commonly used to punctuate a certain point and set a pattern to
increase its dramatic effect during a speech. In this announcement, King uses anaphora on 8
different occasions to stress his opinions. An example of this would be "Now is the time..." (27–30)
when King directly addresses the audience to encourage them to stand up for their rights and "rise
from the dark and desolate valley of segregation..." (28). "I have a dream..." (72), repeated the most
throughout the speech, also created emphasis through repetition of a phrase, leaving a stronger
impression in the audiences mind and hence a heavier emotional attachment from the audience
would lead to easier persuasion through speech. Providing specific examples that are related to the
audience will help convince and improve validity of a speech. Martin Luther King does this by
mentioning geographical references such as "Mississippi" (78), "Alabama" (84), "South Carolina"
(78), "Georgia" (78), and "Louisiana" (79). With these examples mentioned continuously by King,
the audience relates on a personal level to these particular locations. They evoke strong emotions
and images within the particular man as those mentioned may be their home state, directly involved
in the Civil Rights Movement at the time. This makes the speech more inclusive of the audience,
and with the personal relationship that was created between King and his followers, it became

Personal Progression of Public Speaking Essay
In life, we rarely have the chance for a do–over, but I feel like returning to college is mine.
Throughout high school, my grades were never above average and until about a couple of years ago
I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I
began applying myself, the grades earned reflected that. This concept coincides to my public
speaking ability. Many students, including myself, walk into a speech class thinking that it will be
the Easy A of the semester and quite frankly I devoted a good amount of time and hard work to earn
my A's and B's for this course. Overall, my public speaking growth in terms of listenability were

The art speech was not necessarily my best moment when it came to audience analysis. I should
have followed through with making the speech less about the assignment and more about who I was
presenting it to. The dragon and persuasive speech probably would have been better had I not had so
much information, I really saw how it affected the way I looked as far as confidence was concerned.
Looking at my personal anecdote speech I think that was my shining moment. I am not only saying
that because of the grade I received, but because I owned the material and it showed. As far as
maintaining ethos, I would have to say that was during my informative speech. I felt like I knew
what I was talking about in the dragon speech more at the Q & A than during the speech, but during
my energy drink presentation I really had the material down. During the self–evaluations I know
that I properly analyze what I did wrong, though I am not sure I was able to fix everything I set out
to. Strategically speaking, I have a ways to go with choosing a topic, learning how to control my
nervous energy, and to avoid excluding my audience should investigate more efficiently.
Structure is casually called the bones of the speech. I thought I already had understood structure, but
when it came to public speaking I struggled by thinking of the speeches in a literary sense rather
than as a conversation. My dialog started flowing

Is Cicero A Roman Orator?
Cicero was a Roman orator, statesman, lawyer, philosopher, political theorist, poet and much more.
He wrote some works reflecting the personal feeling of an emotional and sensitive man. He wanted
to understand if what is right and what is advantageous can ever conflict. He concluded that such
confronts can only be apparent, never real, and this gives him occasion to reassert the supremacy of
moral considerations over all others. His main idea is to address the confusion of what we value and
the way things are traditionally done.
Being immoral damages our own humanity. "From now on, those whose ambitions it is to give men
instruction, to provide them with precepts, will be charlatans if they they want to rise above you, or
will all be your imitators" (Cicero, On Duties, Book III, in: Selected Works, p. 157). Humans
naturally choose to do the right thing to be better humans. They have to learn to have morality
between each other.
As we already know, Cicero writes this book for his son. He wanted to teach him how to life good
life. Is a thing morally right or wrong? Is it advantageous or disadvantageous? and what is to be the
basis for our choices between apparent right and apparent advantage clash? with those three
questions we can see how he tries to makes us think and analyze everything better. He wants people
to think beyond. "The stoics believe that right is the only good. Your Peripatetics, on the other hand,
hold that right is the highest good – to the degree that all

Public Speech On Public Speaking
Public Speaking Goals I chose to take this course because I have enjoyed previous units I have had
about public speaking in high school English classes and it is a requirement for my major. As a pre–
pharmacy major, public speaking does not seem like a necessary class, but the more I think about
how often public speaking is used, the more I understand the reasoning for public speaking as a
required course. Public speaking is a major foundation for everyday communication. Growing up, I
can recall several common instances where I was exposed to public speaking. A guest speaker
coming to talk to our class, the priest giving a homily at mass, large assemblies with inspirational
speakers, and our graduation speech are a few examples that come to mind. Although it seems like
only famous people or teachers ever have to speak in public, in reality, almost everyone will have to
give a speech in front of a large group at some point in their lives. This is why public speaking is a
required course for most students. Public speaking is important when proposing an idea with a large
group of people, explaining a plan of action for a specific task, sharing a new medical discovery
with a group of physicians, or giving a talk on leadership to a group of business professionals. All of
these cases are applicable to almost any career, which is why it is important for all students to
understand the basics of public speaking and how to effectively communicate with a large audience.

Examples Of Rhetorical Devices In I Have A Dream Speech
Rhetorical devices are a part of many great speeches and essays. Most people just read or listen to
the speech or essay, not realizing the rhetorical device which enhances the feelings and introspection
received from the piece of literature. Imagine a speech where there was no hidden or deeper
meaning, no relation or connection to listeners' personal life. It would be boring and everyone would
lose interest. Rhetorical devices are used by great orators such as Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin
D. Roosevelt, and Lin–Manuel Miranda to draw the audience into really evaluating and hearing the
deeper meaning in their speeches. The first orator, Martin Luther King Jr., used rhetorical devices in
his most famous speech "I have a Dream". His speech ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was not trying to fix a huge problem or gain freedom for everyone. Miranda wanted students to
tell their stories. He used many example about how telling their story could help them. He told how
the musicals he wrote helped him find whom he really was. Rhetorical devices played a large part in
his speech. Miranda frequently used rhetorical questions. For example, he said " Your stories are
essential. Don't believe me?" Miranda asked the question because he wanted them to think about
their values and what they could do with their life. Miranda could have just told them plainly but he
made it more personal by using the rhetorical questions. Throughout his whole speech, he expressed
his main idea with repetition. He mentioned little parts of his musical Hamilton to show his story.
His story revolved around music and he wanted the college students to realize they could tell their
stories in many different ways. Rhetorical devices made Lin–Manuel Miranda speech more
relatable. Rhetorical devices can be used in a right or wrong way. Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin
D. Roosevelt, and Lin–Manuel Miranda all managed to use it to their advantage. They mixed
sentences, thoughts, and word images together and were able to use them effectively to express
themselves to their audiences. Three very different topics, all using rhetorical devices, got people to
truly understand their visions. Whether it was for freedom, an inaugural

Martin Luther King Essay
Martin Luther King
There are many important things that shape the delivery of your speech. Among the most important
parts of delivery involved are voice production and articulation. Other important parts of delivery
include methods, gestures, eye contact, and the clothing that you wear. Martin Luther King Jr. is
considered one of the most influential speakers of this century. The delivery and language of King's
speeches has earned him this label. In the next paragraph I shall examine King's delivery and why he
is considered such a great speaker. If your audience cannot hear you, your speech servers very little
purpose. King's most famous speech took place in nineteen sixty three during a March on
Washington. I' m sure King was concerned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I feel that everyone has gestures that are unique and King was no different. He moved around during
his speeches and used his hand to emphasize points throughout his speeches. I cannot decide
whether king used the memorization or extemporaneous method. If I was to choose one I would
choose the memorization method. During the speeches of
King we viewed he never losses eye contact with the audience. This is one of the reasons why I
choose the memorization method. I also feel King's speeches came straight from his heart. King was
a Baptist minister and was without a doubt filled with the spirit of god. I feel King's speeches were
influenced by the spirit that lived within his heart. The book states that your appearance should be in
harmony with your message. King's speeches were all based on serious spiritual and political issues
and a suit and tie were the attire that he choose to wear. King was a educated man and was without a
doubt educated in the area of fundamental speech skills. The textbook states that the most effective
language was simple, clear, and direct. King practiced all three of these when performing his
speeches. King's language was simple in that the people he was speaking to could comprehend what
he was speaking about. He was very clear about the points in which he was speaking about. He also
came directly to the reason why he was speaking, he did not beat around the bush.
King used emotions to sway people to see things his way. King

1) During My Introduction Speech, I Was Able To Find Out
1) During my introduction speech, I was able to find out both my strengths and shortcomings, in
regards to public speaking. My strengths during the intro speech were in keeping eye contact and a
natural ability to hold the attention of the audience. My shortcomings, however, were much more
pervasive, ranging from bad timing to using filler words. Most noticeably, was my lack of timing,
since the speech I gave lasted roughly 8 and a half minutes. The other noticeable crutch in my
speech, was the use of a filler phrase, that I repeated over and over again, which was "I found it
interesting." I kept using this phrase as a crutch because I was afraid that my speech would run short
of the 5 minute requirement. As a result, I went over on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I felt that removing filler words or phrases would be the hardest of goals to accomplish this semester
because even seasoned and practiced public speakers have a hard time completely removing filler
words and phrases from their speeches. Taking this into consideration, I would like to at the very
least, minimize, the use of filler words and phrases when delivering a public speech. 3) The habits
that I witnessed in other speakers, that were not a problem for me were; lack of eye contact, bad
body language, nervousness and running short on time. The two biggest problems that I noticed
from my classmates speeches, were that the majority of them ran short on their speeches and most of
them also did not keep great eye contact while they were delivering their speeches. These two issues
which most of my classmates faced, apparently was not an issue for me because I went quite a bit
over on time and the according to the positive feedback which Professor Jaffe, gave me after
completing my speech, was that I did a good job engaging the room, by purposely making eye
contact with people. I, also, did not have bad body language like some of my classmates, who
showed their hands in their pockets, played with their beards or hair or stared at the ground or
towards the back of the room. As for nervousness, it would be impossible for me to say that I wasn't
somewhat nervous about giving a speech in front

Essay On Interpretive Reading
Interpretive reading is very important in many ways to the modern world. Interpretive reading which
forms the larger part of the art of public reading is fun, informative, challenging but needs some day
to day strategies to be successful. (39 words)
First, it is important to conduct proper research on various materials available for presentation.
Proper selection of the literature to be presented sets the base for application of other strategies that
will enhance the presentation. A properly selected literature identifies with the theme of the
presentation, the purpose of the presentation, the age bracket of the audience and the expected
outcome of the presentation in terms of message delivery. Proper choice of words and phrases forms
the backbone of effective communication. This is a key characteristic in many speeches of the great
orators and leaders whose words will continue to reign over generations even after they are long

It is important to know how to apply the skill in passing information. For example a supervisor in a
company can apply a high tone when giving instructions to the workers but will use a low tone in
reporting to his manager. The tone of communication determines the level of control one has over
the other in communication. It brings out the inner feelings of the speaker preparing the listener for
appropriate response. It is important apply tonal variation with ultimate care to avoid sending
inconsistent signals while speaking. Tonal variation is an important aspect of modern presentation as
it is used to express different moods. It is from the tonal variation of a speaker through which the
audience is able to identify whether he or she is happy or unhappy with the issue under
consideration. It gives meaning to the words used and helps the listener to understand different
moods of people and then respond accordingly. (167

Martin Luther King And Bern's Speech : My Philosophy For A...
Speeches are known for making individuals from every country be persuaded or informed on a
certain topic. The males and females writing the speeches use rhetorical appeals to help enhance
their speech. Because of these appeals, they can help him or her build credibility with their
audience, make use of logic, and use pathos to bring out emotion in the audience to help get his or
her point across. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech "Street Sweeper" and Sam Berns' speech "My
Philosophy for a Happy Life", both demonstrate the use of ethos, pathos, and logos in both similar
and different ways to convince their audience to stand up to society and stand up for themselves.
King and Berns both used ethos to make people start listening to them to begin with, they built up
credibility with their audiences. Though they used pathos in different ways, Berns using his story of
not being able to play in the marching band until he built his on mechanism and King using pathos
by saying things that the audience could relate to and stand up for, they both used pathos. Finally,
they both used logos in different ways, King using it for the reason of his speech and Berns using it
throughout the speech. King and Berns demonstrate ethos in different ways. King wants his speakers
to be unified in a similar civil rights cause, while Berns wants his audience to individually develop
hope. King uses ethos by being a professional speaker and giving a voice to his race. He built a

How Does Antony Use Ethos In Julius Caesar
Almost every successful orator, or public speaker, uses the art of rhetoric to influence his or her
audience. If it is used correctly, the use of rhetorical devices such as logos, ethos and pathos can be
very beneficial while trying to persuade a large audience. During The Tragedy of Julius Caesar,
Antony and Brutus both give speeches to a crowd of Roman citizens. Antony uses the art of rhetoric
correctly, therefore his speech was more influential than Brutus's speech was. Many other people
were extremely good at persuading a large amount of people to do crazy things, such as Adolf Hitler

American Orator Injustice
Speakers of the past always make us think more deeply than we would like to, as confirmed in
Grimke's "Duty of the American Orator." In the passage the author, Grimke, discusses his opinion–
that you must speak about the union to be an acceptable orator. The beginning of the passage states
which side an orator should stand on and the consequences of believing the opposing stance. It
convincingly explains what we as an American people must work to achieve and further describes
how we are different from other countries. Grimke allows the reader to decide whether he wants to
speak for or speak against the union. He presents to them a choice and deeply explains the
influences of each. What must an influential person address in order to be a successful orator? "Let
the American orator discharge all other duties but this, if indeed it be not impossible, with the energy
and eloquence of John Rutledge, and the disinterested fidelity of Robert Morris, yet shall he be
counted a traitor if he attempt to dissolve the union (McGuffey Fourth Reader, pg. 283)." The
influential orator must speak of the subject like he believes it despite his opinion, if it is best for the
country. If he does not speak about the subject persuasively ... Show more content on

correctly identifies what the world does today. When certain rights are in jeopardy America turns to

Martin Luther King I Have A Dream Speech Analysis
In the history of the United States, we have experienced many periods of revolutions and changes. If
we were to select the best speeches ever given in history, the possibilities would be endless. But,
between the very bests we would have to give an honorable mention to the famous speech made by
Dr. Martin Luther King "I have a dream". To honor another great man who believed in freedom and
liberty, on August 1963, he masterfully delivered the speech. Similarly to any other highly
intelligent public speaker, Dr. King encouraged world peace and equality. In the overview of the
speech, he demanded racial justice and an integrated society became a mantra for the black
community and is as familiar to subsequent generations of Americans as the US Declaration of
Independence. His key message would be unnoticed because his words proved to be a deep and
meaningful to the accordance of the social and political upheaval of the time. The enticing point in
the speech is that all people are created equal and, although not the case in America at the time,
King wanted to teach us that it must be the case for the future. To better elaborate the topic and to
show why it was such a powerfully and well developed speech, we have to take into consideration
of the time and audience. The time was during a period where Inequality was highly pronounced
between certain groups. And, his audience was a selective group that was affect by the tragedy or
discriminations. Somehow, he gave them the hope and

Is Iago An Orator In Othello
Who is Iago? How does one arrive at such evil intentions? How does one succeed in playing out
these intentions? Iago is a true orator. Or is he? Quintilian has a few ideas about what constitutes an
orator and what bars a person from that title. Quintilian might have a hard time labelling Iago based
on his outlines for an orator in his "Institutes of Oratory". Shakespeare clearly wrote Iago with the
intention of embodying vice, anger, and revenge in "Othello". However, Iago's eloquence and
rhetorical prowess may be at odds with Quintilian's manual. Iago proves himself an orator through
his ability to speak on any occasion, with success, and bases his rhetoric on imagination and
subtlety. On the other hand, his rhetoric's intention, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

concerned that the information Iago is withholding is crucial to know. Once Othello essentially begs
Iago, he asserts that "now I shall have reason/ To show the love and duty that I bear you" (III, iii).
This ruse baits Othello into thinking that he needs the knowledge that Iago has, and that it is more
important and valid than it really is while setting Othello into a state of mind to truly consider and
believe the implications that Iago is making. This line also plays upon Othello's assumption and
belief that Iago wants not only what is best for him, but that Iago would sacrifice himself for him.
Therefore, Iago uses rhetoric to make imaginary faults plausible. Next, Iago is a character who
adapts to each event, occasion, and position that he find himself in. He is able to speak to the
advantage of his master plan regardless of the situation that presents itself. Iago proves himself a
chameleon of rhetoric. He is able to fit his plan into all points of his rhetoric without a fault, just as
Quintilian stated that an orator

Public Speaking Essay
One of America's biggest fears is public speaking. Public speaking is one of everyone's biggest fears
right there with death and skydiving. It was also one of mine, and yet I have come to love it. My
first experience was in front of my ag science 1 class, just like most I failed the first time and have
continued to use that experience to grow as an individual and grow to love the idea of public
speaking. Every once in awhile you are given a chance you think that you could never make it
through. I was given one and looking back on it I am glad that I took it and was able to grow as an
individual and learn a lot.
My first experience with public speaking was like most, I failed in front of a group of my peers and

At this time I decided that I would do the Fairs and Festivals speech. I began writing it and after the
first couple of drafts I had bagan to get really discouraged no matter who I gave the paper to I got it
back full of red marks. I thought that I had gotten way in over my head, but I did not give up.
Finally after about 20 drafts I was able to get a final draft and had bagan to memorize it. Although
there was a mishap and I was not able to give it til summer, I continued to learn that by writing the
speech and having 20 different drafts made me a better writer.
I was finally given the chance to give this speech at my local county fair. I had practiced for multiple
weeks and had the speech and answers to questions down pat. I was going into it with less nerves
this time compared to the last. I remember walking up on that small stage, grabbing a microphone,
and beginning to give my speech. I did everything like I practice. I was very happy when I was
awarded a first place blue ribbon and told I would compete at state in January,
Months later I began practicing my speech again so that I would be ready for state. I was so ready
and felt more prepared than ever as I began down the road toward state. I practice and practice and
would even push homework to side to make sure that my speech delivery was top notch. I walked
into the state contest with a positive and confident attitude. As I walked into the room all I saw were

Fear of public speaking Essay
Your chest is tight and you feel like you're on fire. Your chest is tight ant you're burning up. The
flash cards in your hands are crumpled from you squeezing them obsessively. You look up and see
dozens of eyes staring at you, waiting expectantly. Taking a deep breath, you stumble through the
speech. When it's finally over, you practically run back to your seat, cheeks flaming bright red. You
slump down, already dreading the next time you'll have to deal with your upmost fear: public
speaking. For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest
weaknesses. Whether it's a simple in–class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled

I used the search engine Google with the search term "public speaking fear" and it brought up a
great deal of interesting websites pertaining to public speaking. The first one I decided to peruse was
5 Tips to Reduce the Fear of Public Speaking on Psychology Today's website. I learned that public
speaking is the number one fear in America, while the fear of death is second in line. This means
that we're more afraid of speaking in public than we are of dying. I also learned five tips on how to
reduce public speaking nervousness.
The first one was 'Don't Expect Perfection from Yourself.' No one is perfect but when it comes time
to speak in public, some of us pick at every little flaw we think we make. We blow up our
imperfections yet ignore the good things. Honestly, though, even the greatest and most experience
public speakers can make a lot of mistakes. The difference is, when they do, they're able to
gracefully recover and keep going as if nothing happened. That's one of the keys to success: keep
going gracefully. Most of the time, the audience won't notice most of your mistakes unless you make
them obvious by stopping your speech, breaking down and admitting your mistakes. You just have
to carry through with poise and let yourself not be perfect.
The second tip was 'Avoid Equating Public Speaking to Your Self–Worth.' Basically, if you're a
successful professional who's worked hard for where they are in life right now, you

The Quest For Peace And Justice
When people think of speeches, they usually refer to important people talking about important
topics. The idea of importance often differs time to time ranging from Abortions to Gun Laws.
Martin Luther King, JR. is one of those important figures, as he led a variety of peaceful protests
from the boycott for Rosa Parks to demonstrations in Birmingham in the fight for Civil Rights. Not
to mention, he led the nonwhites in a peaceful resistance of nonviolence against unfair racial views.
Out of all of his speeches, one unique one which stands out is "The Quest for Peace and Justice." It
shows the concept where mankind has still not matured enough to where each person of differing
race is able to live next to each other peacefully. Unless mankind can get past the walls of racial
injustice, ignorance of poverty, and the true evil of war, then the battle against racial prejudice will
end in the worst scenario possible. Mankind already has the ability to solve all of its obstacles by
uniting together as a family connected by love and god. In fact, there are two other speeches
comparable in terms of influence and emotion. The most commonly known "I Have a Dream"
speech on August 28th, 1963 and "A Time to Break Silence" as King believes the people must see
the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese as a peaceful approach is the best approach. Of
course, "The Quest for Peace and Justice" is inferior to those two simply because it is overloading

An Ethical And Civil Exchange Of Ideas And Opinions Among...
Question A1: In what way do you see and hear Sen.Kennedy acting ethically as a public speaker? In
other words, how was his speech the kind of public dialogue our book defines as an "ethical and
civil exchange of ideas and opinions among communities about topics that affect the public?" Sen.
Kennedy acts as an ethical public speaker for several different reasons. In Cindy L. Griffin 's book
she states that in order to be an ethical public speaker, "you must consider the moral impact of your
ideas and arguments on others when you enter the public dialogue" (pg. 4 Griffin, L.
Cindy).Kennedy did just that in his speech because he takes the sensitivity of the subject into
account and offered personal experience which made the audience feel comfortable as he
empathized along with them. In public speaking, civility "has come to mean care and concern for
others, the thoughtful use of words and language, and the flexibility to see the many sides of an
issue" (pg.3 Griffin, L. Cindy). Kennedy showed a great amount of civility in his speech, which
made it so powerful. He payed careful attention and considered culture and speaking style, and
never came off as ethnocentric. Question A2: Among the members of the audience assembled to
hear Sen. Kennedy speak were whites and blacks. In a sense, the "community" of his audience was
also two communities. How does Sen. Kennedy address the concerns and feelings of blacks during
his speech? How was he, as an ethical speaker, audience

Hillary Clinton Vs Odyssey
Speeches have been an effective way for someone to share their thoughts and opinions about topics
for years. Have they continued to be successful due to changes in the way that they are given, or is it
because modern–day orators have continued to use some of the same speech techniques? To
determine the answer, a comparison of an old political speech to a contemporary political speech
would be required. In both speeches, Speech in the Virginia Convention and We are not Afraid, both
Patrick Henry and Hillary Clinton use allusion, restatement, and parallelism to effectively state their
views. In their speeches, both Patrick Henry and Hillary Clinton use allusion. Henry alludes to The
Odyssey in the line, "We are apt to shut our eyes against a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

One example of Henry doing so is found when he is talking about the strength of his country. He
says, "They tell us that we are weak. But when shall we be stronger" (Henry 102)? He is restating
the point that the time for a revolution in America is now. He wants his audience to know how much
hope, determination, and confidence he has in the future America because he believes that they are
strong enough to win the revolution. Unlike Henry, Clinton does not use as much restatement in her
speech. Nonetheless, an example can be found in her speech when she says, "I'm not here to repeal
the 2nd Amendment. I'm not here to take away your guns" (Clinton). She is reiterating her belief of
making strict regulations on gun control to ensure the safety of Americans. She wants it to be known
that her motive is not to unarm Americans, which would infringe on the second constitutional
amendment. Although both Henry and Clinton use restatement, Henry does a more effective job of
emotionally moving his audience. He is putting faith into them, hoping that they will become
motivated. On the contrary, Clinton is less effective in her form of restatement; she does not use
restatement to motivate her audience like

Who Is Adolf Hitler A Tyrant
Long ago a wise man once stated" This inspirational quote analyzes the world we live in. A Tyrant is
a ruler of a cruel and oppressive character; someone who is remembered, but has no power and is
dismissed by many. On the other hand, a Martyr is the one who makes great sacrifices or suffers
much in order to further a belief. This clearly depicts that when a Tyrant reaches his death, he will
only be known for the moment, whereas a Martyr who will be missed and remembered for decades
for his positive characteristics. In life, your character will be judged for your legacy, therefore, those
who give a positive message to the world, and those who fight for what's right and those who
sacrifice their life for others are the ones that will never be forgotten throughout history. This quote
plays an important role to our history. Back in the late 1919's, Adolf Hitler came into power. Hitler
was a man of cruel character; he was unsympathetic and racist to mankind. As a brutal dictator, he
put Jewish people, Black people, anyone that didn't match his perfection in concentration camps.
There he put them through unbearable torture as each one was forced to work until they nearly
passed out with little or no food. As a result of his actions, more than million lives were lost. In this
case, Adolf Hitler is known to be the Tyrant. In the early 1960's Martin Luther King Jr gave a

I was never the talkative type nor was I was never a social butterfly. Most importantly, I was not a

it is that makes hate public speaking so much, perhaps it is my shy nature or my awkwardness in
social scenes. Whatever it was, I am glad that I took a Speech class during my time at GCC. Seeing
how much I progressed from my first day in your class made me realize that public speaking is no
more difficult than proving the linear independence of a set of vectors; that's supposed to be an easy

Importance Of Credibility In Public Speaking
Ordinarily, to establish credibility, public speakers should earn the audience's trust and respect by
presenting themselves as authorities on the topic that they are speaking. Consequently, the speaker
should not rely on the content of their speech to gain credibility with the audience. Self–presentation
is important too since the public will start judging the communicator before the speaker begins to
communicate verbally. Establish the authority to the public by speaking about the topic by stating
the source of where the knowledge: experience, training, or research came into perspective. When

establish credibility is to speak loudly, clearly, and confidently. Confidence has become known to

Fourth, tell your audience about your credentials because trust has become contagious to––fans will
begin to believe more readily if an individual can prove that others value the person's expertise.
Credentials include certifications, relative degrees, recommendations, testimonials, volunteering

Martin Luther King's Speech And I Have A Dream Speech...
Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and King George VI's wartime speech are equally
well–written and spoken, while both having distinctive presentations, type of speech, and effect on
society.
The first comparison between "I Have a Dream" speech and the King's wartime speech is that they
served for different situations and how Marin Luther King's delivery was more powerful. The
purpose of MLK's speech was to call for the end racism in America to push for Civil Rights. In
doing so, MLK's presentation took place at the Lincoln Monument Memorial and was presented in
front of approximately 250,000 Civil Rights supporters. "I Have a Dream" speech touched the
audience's heart and moved them emotionally. On the other hand, King George VI needed to
announce Britain's entry into World War Two, thus he had to introduce an official declaration of war.
When the King presented his speech, he did not have a physical audience. Instead, he had the entire
British Empire to broadcast his speech over the radio. King George VI recited his speech in a
peaceful environment, in a quiet room with only his speech therapist around. The first speech
regarding warfare and his stammering issue placed the King under tremendous amounts of pressure
to recite well. The oration was well–delivered and clear. Although both speeches were under
different circumstances, the audience placed the speakers under pressure to present orally well. That
being, one can say that MLK presented his speech better while under heavy stress in front of a
physical crowd. MLK's speech demonstrated how one can move an audience with words and tone of
voice.
MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech was exceptionally well–written and orally presented based on
important factors, such as the delivery and style of the speech. In comparison with King George VI
wartime speech, the two speeches had drastically different tones and voice while presenting. An
important consideration, MLK was a confident and well–spoken person who knew how to use his
voice volume and confidence to engage the audience's attention. On the contrary, King George VI
was not a confident speaker. Furthermore, the use of rhetorical devices is highly evident in MLK's
speech as it helped with the success

Columbia Orator Thesis
Slavery in North America began when Virginia needed workers in 1619, to aid in the production of
crops as tobacco. Slavery was a big deal in North American colonies during the 17th and 18th
centuries, and African–American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation.
The Creation of the cotton gin in 1793 solidified the central importance of slavery to the South's
economy. By the mid–19th century, America's westward expansion, along with a growing abolition
movement in the North, would provoke a great debate over slavery that would tear the nation apart
in the bloody American Civil War.

Public Speech On Public Speaking
Public speaking is an activity that many induvial fear and prefer not to take part in. Public speaking
is very important in the United States, gaining ground as a key attribute for people of all professions
and disciplines. Many schools and colleges in the United States require public speaking for
completion of degrees; many bosses consider it a great skill for interviewers and employees to have.
But why is public speaking and mastering how to do it well so important?
Public Speaking is a type of speech where one speaker presents a formal, continuous discourse on a
topic of interest before a number of other people. A public speaker would need to have a clear
speaking voice, a goal, a familiarity with the audience and knowledge to convey information in an
organized and logical manner, memory of the content, in essence, a public speaker should have

entertain, inform or persuade someone in any topic. Public speaking is primarily used to disclose
information about a particular topic and the goal is influence the audience's attitude, ideas or beliefs.
Public speaking is one of the ways that people use to teach a group via lectures about; or to persuade
a group to believe a certain way and think a certain way. The speaker is empowered by being able to
present the information on his or her own terms and has access to the tools that one needs in order to
accomplish their goal.

the importance of everyone's inner voice. What was very visible about Sheridan was his intention to

Comparison Of Frederick Douglass And Martin Luther King Jr
Out of oppression rises resilient individuals whose voices cannot be silenced. Though the exact
circumstances may vary, both Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. were empowered in
the face of persecution. Both came from a place of suffering and restriction, were inspired by the
brutality the observed, and attacks institutions which allowed these atrocities and others to continue.
Their words, powerful and thought–provoking, will serve as pieces that will not soon be forgotten.
Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. both utilized certain writing techniques to emphasize
their story and increase the degree of impact to the reader. In both pieces, Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass and Letter from Birmingham Jail, emotionally charged elements are included to
create a response from the reader. Douglass ultilizes a deeply personal and graphic style.
Remembering the horrific story of his Aunt Hester, Douglass recounts, "and after rolling up his
sleeves, he (slave master) commenced to lay on the heavy cow skin, and soon the warm, red blood
(amid heartrending shrieks from her, and horrid oaths from him) came dripping to the floor." In
contrast, King calls upon the emotion of the recipients through his reference to the greater evil
committed against society. Relating what he has seen to the larger picture, King describes, "But
when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and
brothers at whim; when you have seen

Ethos In The Great Dictator
Speeches are the most common action that most people do when they are trying to express what
beliefs and values they have to a group or nation. A speech can have a strong impact on people if
they have a clear reason or opinions that need to discuss on what they are talking about to make an
impact towards their audience. They can change a person view or opinions on a complex issue that

had a great meaning behind his character. Instead of addressing him; he was addressing everyone, to

The Art Of Public Speaking Summary
In chapter one of The Art of Public Speaking , Lucas begins by talking about the power of public
speaking he lists all the incredible people foreign and domestic who have spread there ideas and
influences through the art of public speaking. Lucas uses a quote from the Greek leader Pericles
,"One who forms a judgement on any point but cannot explain" it clearly " might as well never have

to know a lot about the subject you are speaking on to gain credibility. Later on in chapter one Lucas
talks about developing confidence while speaking in front of a group of people . Lucas goes on to
give statistics like public speaking is the number one fear for 40% of americans according to a 2001

more complex. the complexity comes from the differences in languages and meaning. Even basic
messages are culturally based. Lucas is trying to convey that you have to be culturally aware when

What Is Equality In Susan B Anthony's Speech
From a young age, American students are able to comprehend the idea that our nation's success
tends to center around the equality of the people. History classes have taught us that the less
discrimination in this world, the easier a country can succeed. Although the nation continues to fight
the war of inequality between its citizens through endless protests and movements, the nation itself
has promised equality to all minorities no matter their color or gender. With new laws added to the
Bill of Rights, the United States have been able to resolve government issues regarding civil
liberties such as freedom of speech, voting regulations and female restrictions that have haunted us
from our American past.
Voting, in this day and age, is easily taken for granted by most. When Susan B. Anthony gave her
speech in 1873 in the hope of the country bettering their laws to comply with the female population,
she knew the nation's laws complied most with "the white male citizens"(Source E) of the country.
Knowing that mistreatment in society was something shared between minorities, Anthony called out
the group of people that were treated better than anyone. When speaking to her audience, Anthony
uses ethos in her speech in order to make her point clear that withholding women's civil liberties is
wrong. Being a woman in 1873, Anthony faced discrimination in her everyday life; for this reason,
she chose to focus on changing not only the country's social discrimination, but also it's

Frederick Douglass Speech Essay
Justified Words
Interlacing flawed feelings within a speech can be very stupefying to an audience. The majority of
the time either the orator is being narcissistic, fumbling over their own words, or their choice of
words see, spurious and somewhat timid, not actually presenting the point. Two honorable mentions
that actually have a notable speech are Frederick Douglass and Chief Seattle in the mid–1800s.
Feelings can always be flowed, but these two men presented amazing speeches that overall lacked
any falsehood within them. Both men saw the reality of the world during the time period they lived
in. Not only were they aware of it, many people were afraid to speak out against the wrongness of
the world then, but they were not afraid. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The speeches given by both men sever an absolute purpose. Whether or not the point does not seem
justifiable to a reader, the more one is to understand the speech, the more it would in fact be
justifiable. From reading both of them, it can be determined that each man had hope, regardless of
what was going on in the world. Douglass mentioned cleanly where his hope was formed, and why
he still had that hope. 'the arm of the Lord is not shortened," were Douglass's exact words. Words
that may somehow be an illusion unrecognizable to the uneducated but a deeper meaning lies within
Douglass's words. A meaning that represents his purpose for his people.
Seattle's words reside with the same effect. "Our God is the same God. You may think that you own
him as you wish to own our land, but you cannot. He is the Body of man, and his compassion is
equal for the Redman and the white." Seattle's faith is no short coming of his speech.
The emotion given by both men was rightfully crestfallen. And in the most of the speeches neither
men ever spoke with gratitude about themselves, or came across as thinking they had done
something more than others had. They simply spoke of what was, and encouraged change.
One comparison of both men's speeches is that both men spoke in a direct jarring diction appeal to
the audience. By using diction, whatever they were saying, however they were wanting it to come
across was very prominent, but in a fashioned manner. Which is one reason why

Fear Of Speaking In Public Essay
"God, that all–powerful Creator of nature and Architect of the world, has impressed man with no
character so proper to distinguish him from other animals, as by the faculty of speech." –Quintilian
(DeCaro)
Public speaking is not only an art, but it's an art that has been learned with the help of practice and
philosophy throughout history. Greek philosopher Aristotle discovered that in order to assemble the
citizens into conformity, one must persuade the people, which is what he called rhetoric.( DeCaro)
Public speaking is described as a sustained formal presentation by a speaker to an audience
(Verderber, Sellnow. pg.3). Although the fear of speaking in public can be very powerful, the ability
to speak in public is very important to success. The fear of speaking is a common entity many
people go through, because speaking in front of a large audience is still practiced for the reasons of
informing, persuading and entertaining the people. Throughout history public speaking has
integrated people and caused great change, in both a positive and undesirable way.
There are three elements in every great speech which is content, structure, and delivery. Speakers
such as Martin Luther King and his "I have a dream speech" and President Nixon have been stated
to have mastered the art of public speaking which involves these key points. I had the opportunity to
critique two speakers on their ability to speak in public as well as on the basis of content, structure,
and delivery.

My Grab Bag Speech: Overcoming Anxiety

  • 1. My Grab Bag Speech I have never taken a public speaking course before getting into college, finding myself too stressed to calm down in the class of CC–100–11. I experienced the most anxious moment before I did my Grab Bag speech. Though I was so nervous, I finally finished it with all my efforts. In general, I feel that my Grab Bag speech is good enough for me as the first challenge, despite of the lack of experience in preparation, missing parts of the outline and the overwhelming anxiety. Therefore, I also give myself some advice and set an aim to achieve. Before the delivering of the speech, preparation is crucial given that it gives the speaker a clear clue of what his should talk about, how he can organize his speech and how he can perform well in front of specific groups of audiences. Once my topic is decided, according to Joshua, I should further narrow my topic and find the most three points, which are the "magic numbers (136)", by going through the general speech purpose. In this case, my purpose is "to inform or teach" about myself, thus I chose "anime", "horror movie", and "spicy food". I started preparing through this point, yet I failed to consider more about my "organization". In my original speech outline, I simply put these all three things together without considering any order. As it says that "you want to do so in a way that is manageable to you as a speaker and memorable to a listening audience (Joshua, 135)", speaker should better to create an organized speech for audience. Considering that I want to emphasize who I am, I should use topical order which tells different characteristics. By correcting my original speech outline, the "spicy food" which tells about my identity should go first, then "horror movie" goes next, and at last my favorite "anime" on which I should strongly emphasize should end the speech. Additionally, I find out that I should change my use in language for the opening and summary. It's obvious that "often the thesis statement overlaps significantly with the purpose of a speech, but not always (Joshua, 87)." I started my speech thesis by saying "So today I am going to show you three artifacts which are all my favorites and can determine who I am. They are anime, horror movie and spicy ... • 3. King And Douglass Similarities Have you ever heard of the speech "I Have a Dream" from the late Martin Luther King Jr.? You'd be pretty sure many people have heard of it, but has anyone ever really read it and thought about it? This could be like "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery," a piece of work produced by Frederick Douglass. "They both argued that African–Americans have a natural right to equality" (Renfro 1). Douglass once said, "The white man's happiness cannot be purchased by the black man's misery." Here is just another point of there not being enough equality for being an African American during those times of struggle. The fact that King and Douglass had used their oral power to try and fight throughout their lives was a very substantial task. They are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They came to be very influential people for the people of their time and for many years up to now. King and Douglass also had their staple in time for being great Civil Rights activists. They played key parts in the fight to lead blacks from their lack of power and equality for themselves. Having the struggles to deal with within slavery and segregated times, blacks wanted to band together. King was vital in the making of acts during those times, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ("Martin Luther King Jr." 2). This act was what outlawed most of the discrimination for colored people. Douglass had his own contributions, but they were in some cases not as major as the things King put forward to gain equality for blacks. As time went on the two began earning their unparalleled oratory skills. With the power of just their voices and hands they were granted with so much more notoriety. "Both of them have similar oratory styles. They both had the amazing ability to move their audience to action"(Renfro 1). They were also publishers and produced many great pieces of work. "Douglass published three versions of his autobiography during his lifetime, revising and expanding on his work each time. My Bondage and My Freedom appeared in 1855. In 1881, Douglass published Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, which he revised in 1892" ("Frederick ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Speaking And Communication: Speaking, And, Or Communication In the past, I have participated in a lot of classes and professional training dealing with many different types topics, but unfortunately, public speaking and or communications played very little roles in these classes. I will be talking about my past experiences public speaking and what I'm expecting to gain out of SVC 101. I have been in the US Air Force for 12.5 years now, I did not do any real Professional Military Education (PME) until about the five year mark where I went through Airman leadership school, (ALS), where we dabbled very briefly on public speaking. Fast Forward 7 years later I honestly can't remember much from the class. Since then I have had the opportunity to do a couple public speeches, some of which have been in front of rather large crowds. I can remember waiting to get up in front of everyone and not being nervous at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I always try to give my undivided attention to the presenter because I know he/she probably hates standing in front of everyone just as much as I hate being part of the crowd but they have to do it. I've also seen a couple times the presenter freeze up and almost forgot what they're on stage for, this honestly might be one of my worst fears. My girlfriend really likes dressing up and going to balets, plays and musical events around Charleston, one night she was finally able to talk me into going to see a ballet which was sleeping beauty. I had never been to a professional ballet before this point. I was really intrigued how the dancers could tell the story by with dancing, facial expressions and music. It really goes to show that not all forms of communication is done through speech, you can get a lot out of it with someone's body expressions. I have become a little more aware of this and have been trying very diligently on bettering my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Hitler's Speech : The Impacts Of Adolf Hitler And Donald... Every person's actions have effected history in some way or another. Some people make a bigger impact than others. Throughout history, countless speeches given by countless men and women have marked their place in history, and some have changed entire nations or even impacted the world. Some of these great speeches were given by Nazi leader Adolf Hilter, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and our president today Donald Trump. These great orators gave powerful speeches that had a large impact and were more than just words. These speeches were a combination of the emotion behind the words, their style and confidence while presenting, and the energy brought forth. Initially, one of the orators that had massive influence on the world was Adolf Hitler. Hitler persuaded his audiences to follow despite the fact he was at fault for the death or 21 million people and had conquered many nations. He gave thousands of persuasive speeches but what made them so special was that he could lead entire nations to follow him. According to Bruce Loebs, Hitler's success was due to his charisma. He also stated, "He learned how to become a charismatic speaker, and people, for whatever reason, became enamored with him." Many of these people were so willing to follow Hitler because of the economic stress Germany was in at the time. Hitler spoke so confidently, as if he had all the right answers. This lead to Hitler receiving full support during his rise in the 1930s. Hitler knew how important his speeches ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Adolf Hitler: One of the Most Talented Orators in History ... Throughout the course of time there have been many world renowned orators, that have forever changed history. The power to speak and captivate an audience is a gift that not many possess. There are have been numerous leaders throughout the world that have achieved this gift and have put it to use. There have been both positive and negative outcomes of public speaking by famous leaders. Whether it was African–American civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., changing the world and the views of people for the better with his "I Have A Dream" speech, or German dictator, Adolf Hitler, pushing his anti–semitic views through his Nazi speeches, people listened. People will always listen to these speeches and take away something different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most Socialist leaders were Jews so he felt that the two had something to do with each other, which made him dislike both the Jews and Socialists. In May 1919, the German Army overthrew the Socialist Republic. Hitler being one of the people fighting, was arrested, held and accused of being a Socialist. To prove that he was not a Socialist, he agreed that he would help find Socialist soldiers to be executed. Through this experience he became a Political Officer. For this position, his main duty was to educate and lecture the soldiers on current politics. Hitler had a very large audience of people listening to him which was something completely new for him. Based on Hitler's public speaking talent, he was asked to join a party called the German Worker's Party by Anton Drexler. This party had Anti–Semitic views and a strong sense of German Nationalism which made it easy for Hitler to fall into the group. Shortly after joining the group, Hitler was named as the Propaganda Manager. Many people joined the group as a result of hearing Hitler's public speeches. The GWP was later nicknamed the Nazi Party. When this nickname took place, Hitler became the new leader. Hitler took both the Nazi Party and Germany to many new levels. He became a dictator soon after gaining control of the Nazi Party. Critical Response Essay Final 'I have a Dream' – Critical Response Essay ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– How does 'I have a Dream' By Martin Luther King conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a persuasive speech, and for what purpose? ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– I have chosen the question "How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre, and for what purpose?" I have decided to analyse Martin Luther King's classic Civil Rights Movement speech "I have a Dream" and how the structure of the speech creates a persuasive aspect for the audience. This task refers back to Part 1 of the English Language and Literature Course. The essay will address these key points: 1. Repetition at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The technique of Anaphora is commonly used to punctuate a certain point and set a pattern to increase its dramatic effect during a speech. In this announcement, King uses anaphora on 8 different occasions to stress his opinions. An example of this would be "Now is the time..." (27–30) when King directly addresses the audience to encourage them to stand up for their rights and "rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation..." (28). "I have a dream..." (72), repeated the most throughout the speech, also created emphasis through repetition of a phrase, leaving a stronger impression in the audiences mind and hence a heavier emotional attachment from the audience would lead to easier persuasion through speech. Providing specific examples that are related to the audience will help convince and improve validity of a speech. Martin Luther King does this by mentioning geographical references such as "Mississippi" (78), "Alabama" (84), "South Carolina" (78), "Georgia" (78), and "Louisiana" (79). With these examples mentioned continuously by King, the audience relates on a personal level to these particular locations. They evoke strong emotions and images within the particular man as those mentioned may be their home state, directly involved in the Civil Rights Movement at the time. This makes the speech more inclusive of the audience, and with the personal relationship that was created between King and his followers, it became ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Personal Progression of Public Speaking Essay In life, we rarely have the chance for a do–over, but I feel like returning to college is mine. Throughout high school, my grades were never above average and until about a couple of years ago I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I began applying myself, the grades earned reflected that. This concept coincides to my public speaking ability. Many students, including myself, walk into a speech class thinking that it will be the Easy A of the semester and quite frankly I devoted a good amount of time and hard work to earn my A's and B's for this course. Overall, my public speaking growth in terms of listenability were influenced by the following: the strategy keys in correctly engaging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The art speech was not necessarily my best moment when it came to audience analysis. I should have followed through with making the speech less about the assignment and more about who I was presenting it to. The dragon and persuasive speech probably would have been better had I not had so much information, I really saw how it affected the way I looked as far as confidence was concerned. Looking at my personal anecdote speech I think that was my shining moment. I am not only saying that because of the grade I received, but because I owned the material and it showed. As far as maintaining ethos, I would have to say that was during my informative speech. I felt like I knew what I was talking about in the dragon speech more at the Q & A than during the speech, but during my energy drink presentation I really had the material down. During the self–evaluations I know that I properly analyze what I did wrong, though I am not sure I was able to fix everything I set out to. • 15. Is Cicero A Roman Orator? Cicero was a Roman orator, statesman, lawyer, philosopher, political theorist, poet and much more. He wrote some works reflecting the personal feeling of an emotional and sensitive man. He wanted to understand if what is right and what is advantageous can ever conflict. He concluded that such confronts can only be apparent, never real, and this gives him occasion to reassert the supremacy of moral considerations over all others. His main idea is to address the confusion of what we value and the way things are traditionally done. Being immoral damages our own humanity. "From now on, those whose ambitions it is to give men instruction, to provide them with precepts, will be charlatans if they they want to rise above you, or will all be your imitators" (Cicero, On Duties, Book III, in: Selected Works, p. 157). Humans naturally choose to do the right thing to be better humans. They have to learn to have morality between each other. As we already know, Cicero writes this book for his son. He wanted to teach him how to life good life. Is a thing morally right or wrong? Is it advantageous or disadvantageous? and what is to be the basis for our choices between apparent right and apparent advantage clash? with those three questions we can see how he tries to makes us think and analyze everything better. He wants people to think beyond. "The stoics believe that right is the only good. Your Peripatetics, on the other hand, hold that right is the highest good – to the degree that all ... • 17. Public Speech On Public Speaking Public Speaking Goals I chose to take this course because I have enjoyed previous units I have had about public speaking in high school English classes and it is a requirement for my major. As a pre– pharmacy major, public speaking does not seem like a necessary class, but the more I think about how often public speaking is used, the more I understand the reasoning for public speaking as a required course. Public speaking is a major foundation for everyday communication. Growing up, I can recall several common instances where I was exposed to public speaking. A guest speaker coming to talk to our class, the priest giving a homily at mass, large assemblies with inspirational speakers, and our graduation speech are a few examples that come to mind. Although it seems like only famous people or teachers ever have to speak in public, in reality, almost everyone will have to give a speech in front of a large group at some point in their lives. This is why public speaking is a required course for most students. Public speaking is important when proposing an idea with a large group of people, explaining a plan of action for a specific task, sharing a new medical discovery with a group of physicians, or giving a talk on leadership to a group of business professionals. All of these cases are applicable to almost any career, which is why it is important for all students to understand the basics of public speaking and how to effectively communicate with a large audience. • 19. Examples Of Rhetorical Devices In I Have A Dream Speech Rhetorical devices are a part of many great speeches and essays. Most people just read or listen to the speech or essay, not realizing the rhetorical device which enhances the feelings and introspection received from the piece of literature. Imagine a speech where there was no hidden or deeper meaning, no relation or connection to listeners' personal life. It would be boring and everyone would lose interest. Rhetorical devices are used by great orators such as Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lin–Manuel Miranda to draw the audience into really evaluating and hearing the deeper meaning in their speeches. For example, he said " Your stories are essential. Don't believe me?" Miranda asked the question because he wanted them to think about their values and what they could do with their life. Miranda could have just told them plainly but he made it more personal by using the rhetorical questions. Throughout his whole speech, he expressed his main idea with repetition. He mentioned little parts of his musical Hamilton to show his story. His story revolved around music and he wanted the college students to realize they could tell their stories in many different ways. Rhetorical devices made Lin–Manuel Miranda speech more relatable. Rhetorical devices can be used in a right or wrong way. Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lin–Manuel Miranda all managed to use it to their advantage. Among the most important parts of delivery involved are voice production and articulation. Other important parts of delivery include methods, gestures, eye contact, and the clothing that you wear. Martin Luther King Jr. is considered one of the most influential speakers of this century. The delivery and language of King's speeches has earned him this label. During the speeches of King we viewed he never losses eye contact with the audience. This is one of the reasons why I choose the memorization method. I also feel King's speeches came straight from his heart. King was a Baptist minister and was without a doubt filled with the spirit of god. I feel King's speeches were influenced by the spirit that lived within his heart. The book states that your appearance should be in harmony with your message. King's speeches were all based on serious spiritual and political issues and a suit and tie were the attire that he choose to wear. King was a educated man and was without a doubt educated in the area of fundamental speech skills. The textbook states that the most effective language was simple, clear, and direct. King practiced all three of these when performing his speeches. King's language was simple in that the people he was speaking to could comprehend what he was speaking about. My strengths during the intro speech were in keeping eye contact and a natural ability to hold the attention of the audience. My shortcomings, however, were much more pervasive, ranging from bad timing to using filler words. Most noticeably, was my lack of timing, since the speech I gave lasted roughly 8 and a half minutes. The other noticeable crutch in my speech, was the use of a filler phrase, that I repeated over and over again, which was "I found it interesting." The two biggest problems that I noticed from my classmates speeches, were that the majority of them ran short on their speeches and most of them also did not keep great eye contact while they were delivering their speeches. These two issues which most of my classmates faced, apparently was not an issue for me because I went quite a bit over on time and the according to the positive feedback which Professor Jaffe, gave me after completing my speech, was that I did a good job engaging the room, by purposely making eye contact with people. I, also, did not have bad body language like some of my classmates, who showed their hands in their pockets, played with their beards or hair or stared at the ground or towards the back of the room. • 27. Martin Luther King And Bern's Speech : My Philosophy For A... Speeches are known for making individuals from every country be persuaded or informed on a certain topic. The males and females writing the speeches use rhetorical appeals to help enhance their speech. Because of these appeals, they can help him or her build credibility with their audience, make use of logic, and use pathos to bring out emotion in the audience to help get his or her point across. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech "Street Sweeper" and Sam Berns' speech "My Philosophy for a Happy Life", both demonstrate the use of ethos, pathos, and logos in both similar and different ways to convince their audience to stand up to society and stand up for themselves. King and Berns both used ethos to make people start listening to them to begin with, they built up credibility with their audiences. • 31. American Orator Injustice Speakers of the past always make us think more deeply than we would like to, as confirmed in Grimke's "Duty of the American Orator." In the passage the author, Grimke, discusses his opinion– that you must speak about the union to be an acceptable orator. The beginning of the passage states which side an orator should stand on and the consequences of believing the opposing stance. It convincingly explains what we as an American people must work to achieve and further describes how we are different from other countries. Grimke allows the reader to decide whether he wants to speak for or speak against the union. He presents to them a choice and deeply explains the influences of each. What must an influential person address in order to be a successful orator? "Let the American orator discharge all other duties but this, if indeed it be not impossible, with the energy and eloquence of John Rutledge, and the disinterested fidelity of Robert Morris, yet shall he be counted a traitor if he attempt to dissolve the union (McGuffey Fourth Reader, pg. 283)." If we were to select the best speeches ever given in history, the possibilities would be endless. But, between the very bests we would have to give an honorable mention to the famous speech made by Dr. Martin Luther King "I have a dream". To honor another great man who believed in freedom and liberty, on August 1963, he masterfully delivered the speech. Similarly to any other highly intelligent public speaker, Dr. King encouraged world peace and equality. In the overview of the speech, he demanded racial justice and an integrated society became a mantra for the black community and is as familiar to subsequent generations of Americans as the US Declaration of Independence. His key message would be unnoticed because his words proved to be a deep and meaningful to the accordance of the social and political upheaval of the time. The enticing point in the speech is that all people are created equal and, although not the case in America at the time, King wanted to teach us that it must be the case for the future. To better elaborate the topic and to show why it was such a powerfully and well developed speech, we have to take into consideration of the time and audience. Quintilian has a few ideas about what constitutes an orator and what bars a person from that title. Quintilian might have a hard time labelling Iago based on his outlines for an orator in his "Institutes of Oratory". Shakespeare clearly wrote Iago with the intention of embodying vice, anger, and revenge in "Othello". However, Iago's eloquence and rhetorical prowess may be at odds with Quintilian's manual. Iago proves himself an orator through his ability to speak on any occasion, with success, and bases his rhetoric on imagination and subtlety. On the other hand, his rhetoric's intention, and ... Once Othello essentially begs Iago, he asserts that "now I shall have reason/ To show the love and duty that I bear you" (III, iii). This ruse baits Othello into thinking that he needs the knowledge that Iago has, and that it is more important and valid than it really is while setting Othello into a state of mind to truly consider and believe the implications that Iago is making. This line also plays upon Othello's assumption and belief that Iago wants not only what is best for him, but that Iago would sacrifice himself for him. Therefore, Iago uses rhetoric to make imaginary faults plausible. Next, Iago is a character who adapts to each event, occasion, and position that he find himself in. I learned that public speaking is the number one fear in America, while the fear of death is second in line. This means that we're more afraid of speaking in public than we are of dying. I also learned five tips on how to reduce public speaking nervousness. The first one was 'Don't Expect Perfection from Yourself.' No one is perfect but when it comes time to speak in public, some of us pick at every little flaw we think we make. We blow up our imperfections yet ignore the good things. Honestly, though, even the greatest and most experience public speakers can make a lot of mistakes. The difference is, when they do, they're able to gracefully recover and keep going as if nothing happened. That's one of the keys to success: keep going gracefully. Most of the time, the audience won't notice most of your mistakes unless you make them obvious by stopping your speech, breaking down and admitting your mistakes. • 43. The Quest For Peace And Justice When people think of speeches, they usually refer to important people talking about important topics. The idea of importance often differs time to time ranging from Abortions to Gun Laws. Martin Luther King, JR. is one of those important figures, as he led a variety of peaceful protests from the boycott for Rosa Parks to demonstrations in Birmingham in the fight for Civil Rights. Not to mention, he led the nonwhites in a peaceful resistance of nonviolence against unfair racial views. Out of all of his speeches, one unique one which stands out is "The Quest for Peace and Justice." It shows the concept where mankind has still not matured enough to where each person of differing race is able to live next to each other peacefully. Unless mankind can get past the walls of racial injustice, ignorance of poverty, and the true evil of war, then the battle against racial prejudice will end in the worst scenario possible. Mankind already has the ability to solve all of its obstacles by uniting together as a family connected by love and god. In fact, there are two other speeches comparable in terms of influence and emotion. The most commonly known "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28th, 1963 and "A Time to Break Silence" as King believes the people must see the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese as a peaceful approach is the best approach. In other words, how was his speech the kind of public dialogue our book defines as an "ethical and civil exchange of ideas and opinions among communities about topics that affect the public?" Sen. Kennedy acts as an ethical public speaker for several different reasons. In Cindy L. Griffin 's book she states that in order to be an ethical public speaker, "you must consider the moral impact of your ideas and arguments on others when you enter the public dialogue" (pg. 4 Griffin, L. Cindy).Kennedy did just that in his speech because he takes the sensitivity of the subject into account and offered personal experience which made the audience feel comfortable as he empathized along with them. In public speaking, civility "has come to mean care and concern for others, the thoughtful use of words and language, and the flexibility to see the many sides of an issue" (pg.3 Griffin, L. Cindy). Kennedy showed a great amount of civility in his speech, which made it so powerful. He payed careful attention and considered culture and speaking style, and never came off as ethnocentric. He wants his audience to know how much hope, determination, and confidence he has in the future America because he believes that they are strong enough to win the revolution. Importance Of Credibility In Public Speaking Ordinarily, to establish credibility, public speakers should earn the audience's trust and respect by presenting themselves as authorities on the topic that they are speaking. The first comparison between "I Have a Dream" speech and the King's wartime speech is that they served for different situations and how Marin Luther King's delivery was more powerful. The purpose of MLK's speech was to call for the end racism in America to push for Civil Rights. In doing so, MLK's presentation took place at the Lincoln Monument Memorial and was presented in front of approximately 250,000 Civil Rights supporters. "I Have a Dream" speech touched the audience's heart and moved them emotionally. On the other hand, King George VI needed to announce Britain's entry into World War Two, thus he had to introduce an official declaration of war. When the King presented his speech, he did not have a physical audience. Instead, he had the entire British Empire to broadcast his speech over the radio. King George VI recited his speech in a peaceful environment, in a quiet room with only his speech therapist around. The first speech regarding warfare and his stammering issue placed the King under tremendous amounts of pressure to recite well. The oration was well–delivered and clear. Although both speeches were under different circumstances, the audience placed the speakers under pressure to present orally well. That being, one can say that MLK presented his speech better while under heavy stress in front of a physical crowd. MLK's speech demonstrated how one can move an audience with words and tone of voice. MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech was exceptionally well–written and orally presented based on important factors, such as the delivery and style of the speech. In comparison with King George VI wartime speech, the two speeches had drastically different tones and voice while presenting. An important consideration, MLK was a confident and well–spoken person who knew how to use his voice volume and confidence to engage the audience's attention. On the contrary, King George VI was not a confident speaker. Furthermore, the use of rhetorical devices is highly evident in MLK's speech as it helped with the success ... Chaplin also stated that, "I should like to help everyone – if possible – Jew, Gentile black, and white. He shows his personality to all other races other than his own. It showed that he cared about everyone it doesn't matter what ethnic background you are he wants to help everyone if he could. In his discussion he states, "We all want to help one another. • 73. What Is Equality In Susan B Anthony's Speech From a young age, American students are able to comprehend the idea that our nation's success tends to center around the equality of the people. History classes have taught us that the less discrimination in this world, the easier a country can succeed. Although the nation continues to fight the war of inequality between its citizens through endless protests and movements, the nation itself has promised equality to all minorities no matter their color or gender. With new laws added to the Bill of Rights, the United States have been able to resolve government issues regarding civil liberties such as freedom of speech, voting regulations and female restrictions that have haunted us from our American past. Voting, in this day and age, is easily taken for granted by most. When Susan B. Anthony gave her speech in 1873 in the hope of the country bettering their laws to comply with the female population, she knew the nation's laws complied most with "the white male citizens"(Source E) of the country. Knowing that mistreatment in society was something shared between minorities, Anthony called out the group of people that were treated better than anyone. When speaking to her audience, Anthony uses ethos in her speech in order to make her point clear that withholding women's civil liberties is wrong. Being a woman in 1873, Anthony faced discrimination in her everyday life; for this reason, she chose to focus on changing not only the country's social discrimination, but also it's ... • 75. Frederick Douglass Speech Essay Justified Words Interlacing flawed feelings within a speech can be very stupefying to an audience. The majority of the time either the orator is being narcissistic, fumbling over their own words, or their choice of words see, spurious and somewhat timid, not actually presenting the point. Two honorable mentions that actually have a notable speech are Frederick Douglass and Chief Seattle in the mid–1800s. Feelings can always be flowed, but these two men presented amazing speeches that overall lacked any falsehood within them. Both men saw the reality of the world during the time period they lived in. Not only were they aware of it, many people were afraid to speak out against the wrongness of the world then, but they were not afraid. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The speeches given by both men sever an absolute purpose. Whether or not the point does not seem justifiable to a reader, the more one is to understand the speech, the more it would in fact be justifiable. From reading both of them, it can be determined that each man had hope, regardless of what was going on in the world. Douglass mentioned cleanly where his hope was formed, and why he still had that hope. 'the arm of the Lord is not shortened," were Douglass's exact words. Words that may somehow be an illusion unrecognizable to the uneducated but a deeper meaning lies within Douglass's words. A meaning that represents his purpose for his people. Seattle's words reside with the same effect. "Our God is the same God. You may think that you own him as you wish to own our land, but you cannot. He is the Body of man, and his compassion is equal for the Redman and the white." Seattle's faith is no short coming of his speech. The emotion given by both men was rightfully crestfallen. And in the most of the speeches neither men ever spoke with gratitude about themselves, or came across as thinking they had done something more than others had. They simply spoke of what was, and encouraged change. One comparison of both men's speeches is that both men spoke in a direct jarring diction appeal to the audience. By using diction, whatever they were saying, however they were wanting it to come across was very prominent, but in a fashioned manner. Which is one reason why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fear Of Speaking In Public Essay "God, that all–powerful Creator of nature and Architect of the world, has impressed man with no character so proper to distinguish him from other animals, as by the faculty of speech." –Quintilian (DeCaro) Public speaking is not only an art, but it's an art that has been learned with the help of practice and philosophy throughout history. Greek philosopher Aristotle discovered that in order to assemble the citizens into conformity, one must persuade the people, which is what he called rhetoric.( DeCaro) Public speaking is described as a sustained formal presentation by a speaker to an audience (Verderber, Sellnow. pg.3). Although the fear of speaking in public can be very powerful, the ability to speak in public is very important to success. The fear of speaking is a common entity many people go through, because speaking in front of a large audience is still practiced for the reasons of informing, persuading and entertaining the people. Throughout history public speaking has integrated people and caused great change, in both a positive and undesirable way. There are three elements in every great speech which is content, structure, and delivery. Speakers such as Martin Luther King and his "I have a dream speech" and President Nixon have been stated to have mastered the art of public speaking which involves these key points. I had the opportunity to critique two speakers on their ability to speak in public as well as on the basis of content, structure, and delivery. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
