Sorority Vs Fraternity
Although college life is portrayed to many as one big partyВќ, I recently have found that this accusation is unrealistic. The truth is, college is an
overwhelming and intimidating experience. Preconceived notions of how college really works, ultimately ruins the reality of college life.
The first falsity is about Sorority and Fraternity life. Being in a Fraternity or Sorority is not depicted honestly. In college, most people picture typical
Fraternity and Sorority parties. However, Sorority and Fraternity work is geared more towards community service rather than parties. All Fraternities
and Sororities are required to have a philanthropy that is well chartered.
Academics in college are focused on far more than social events. Regularly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
College reality differs greatly from the reality that is exhibited by most. Upon entering college one must take into account the difficult tasks that are
ahead.
Not all of your instructors will be equally clear about what they expect of your paper. Some will tell you in detail what to read, how to think about it,
and how to organize your paper, but others will ask a general question just to see what you can do with it. Some instructors will expect you to stay
close to the assignment, penalizing you if you depart from it; others will encourage you to strike out on your own. Some few instructors may want you
to demonstrate only that you have read and understood a reading, but most will want you to use your understanding of the reading as a jumping–off
point for an analysis and an argument.
Often, students who struggle in college do so because they are unclear about what their college professors expect. This confusion might come from
attending college for the wrong reasons, or it might originate in different experiences. The secret is to know what professors expect in terms of basic
mental habits and skills, and how those expectations often differ from earlier educational

Fraternity And Sorority
College students have many life altering questions they must answer through the journey of further education. From a student's major, living
circumstance, classes, and getting involved on campus, it can start to get stressful if there are mixed signals about what they are getting into. Getting
involved on campus is a great way to meet people and improve skills needed after graduation. A student might choose to be involved in Greek life
because of the parties, friends, and job application quirks down the road (Joining a Fraternity, np). The outcome involves those things, but it also
involves leadership traits, lifelong relationships, the ability to surpass the negative public perception of Fraternity and Sorority men and women, and
keep up good grades. While involved in Greek life, each chapter has an executive council which is the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a student does not have that certain GPA requirement they get dropped from recruitment before the chapter even considers looking at anything
else. Students must maintain a certain GPA to stay in the chapter. Most fraternities or sororities have weekly study groups. My chapter has a Geek
of the Week, which goes to whoever makes the highest grades on major tests. If a student's GPA drops under a certain score, then they have to have
a certain amount of study hours or note checks until their grade goes back up. If their GPA is so low for a long amount of time they might get
kicked out of the fraternity or sorority. Students knowing that they have to keep their grades up for a fraternity or sorority could help them graduate.
"A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non–fraternity/sorority
persons graduate" (Fraternity and Sorority Facts, np). Fraternities and sororities are helping their members graduate rather than helping them party all

The Importance Of The Greek Community
How the Greek Community Can Improve its Relationship with the Public The Greek community is a longstanding tradition found at most colleges
and universities across the country. Greek Letter fraternities and sororities were designed to instill principles of friendship, loyalty, service, and
academic success into their members (Alford, Joe). Over time, many of these values have become more difficult to recognize in chapters across the
nation because of multiple incidents involving partying, binge drinking, and especially hazing. These are the issues that have come to define Greek
life on campuses in the United States today, and because of that Greek life as a whole has developed a nasty reputation in the eyes of the public.
Although these are what most people think about when they imagine a typical fraternity or sorority, it is not the way these once great institutions were
designed to be. The Greek community needs to do a better job of working together to prove to their campuses, and to the nation, that they are about
much more than the issues that surround them. A major reform is in order to help the Greek system return to the values that they were founded upon,
so that they can continue to be an important part of millions of young adult's college experiences. What's the first thing you think of when you hear the
word fraternity? For many people, the first word to come to mind is hazing. Hazing in fraternities has led to the deaths of over 50 students across the
nation

Why Fraternities Should be Banned Essay
Recently, the idea of partaking in a fraternity has become more prevalent. Young adults are captivated with wanting to live the Greek life. The clothes
and parties seem to drawn in teens like a magnet. However what these teens do not realize is the terrible things associated with fraternities. Many
fraternities have a reputation for turning college students into drunks, treating women vulgarly, enacting violent hazing against other fraternity
members and disrupting the true reason why students go to college. For these reasons fraternities should be banned altogether on college campuses.
First of all, fraternities have proven to be a serious reason for underage drinking and binge drinking. These young adults have far less supervision and...

Men taking advantage of women is considered a social norm. Also, When fraternity members admitted to doing things that by law are considered
rape they did not believe that they were rapist. They insist that if a girl is intoxicated then they are still able to consent to sex. Granted not all Greeks
are this way. Many fraternity members treat women respectfully and contribute greatly to bettering the college experience. The problem is too many
offenders do exist and they have ruined the once credible reputation of fraternities everywhere. Furthermore, fraternities are infamous for their
requirement to pledge in order to join the brotherhood. Although the specific acts inflicted on pledges is known only by members of fraternity, it is
commonly known that hazing is part of the initiation. The pledges have to complete a series of humiliating and sometime dangerous rituals in order
to join. They could be forced to consume excessive amount of alcohols and drugs, or be physically beaten or be publicly humiliated. Little known fact,
white fraternities generally use alcohol for hazing while black fraternities result to physical violence. In a survey conducted by Dr. Susan Lipkins
"31% of Fraternity and sorority members agree that a significant element in an initiation rite is humiliation." "Also, many of the Greek Leaders agree

Freshmen Do Not Have What It's Takes to Join a Fraternity or Sorority Fraternities and Sororities are some of the elite groups on a college campus.
Fraternities and Sororities consist of men or women that share common goals and aspirations. Members of the fraternities or sororities publicize their
organizations on campus by volunteering, performing and hosting different events. Each member must maintain a GPA of a 3.0 or higher and
participate in campus activities. Students who join these organizations have to be involved and leaders in their community. College freshmen see and

The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities Essay
The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities
Joining fraternities and sororities has been a long tradition among many college and university students within the United States. As the number of
students entering colleges and universities grow, the influence and pressure to join fraternities and sororities grow as well. According to aresearch
project conducted by Dr. Gary D. Malaney, associate professor of education and director of student affairs at the University of Massachusetts, "58.6%
[of 413 students surveyed] reported having at least a few friends who belong to the Greek Area" (Malaney 2). However, the Kappa Sigma fraternity at

Among the many fraternities in the United States, some fraternities are said to accept students after "drinking a whole bottle of alcohol nonstop"
(Brown). Flushing toilets after a current member takes a dump, not sleeping for two days, carrying bricks in backpacks for weeks, and sexual
intercourse are some of the many shocking things new members will do to earn their way into a fraternity or sorority. According to Kevin Brown,
"you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do to get in, and that could be anything." Some sororities "will paddle each other till their
behinds are bleeding. They will force girls to do things like boob ranking, where they're given five minutes to examine each other's chests and rank
themselves by size" (Morehouse) before getting accepted. Clearly, fraternities and sororities often do not respect the rights, opinions and well–being of
their potential members.
For many fraternities and sororities, academics are certainly not the key methods of attracting new members. Surprisingly, fraternities and sororities
have quite an effect on student academic performances. According to Malaney's research, only 4% of all fraternity members surveyed said their
academic performance improved while 26% claimed that their performance got worse (Malaney 3). Among the sorority members surveyed, 6% said

Fraternities And Sororities In Greek Life
In every university there is always a Greek life that has opportunities to connect, make new friends, and also participate in activities. This all sound
fine and dandy at first but not all Greek life is how it said to be. Yes it is a fun and you make friendships but, all that come with a price and that is at
the start of initiation. The definition of initiation is the action of admitting someone into a secret, obscure society or group. Fraternities and sororities
are a group of society and they abuse boys and girls wanting to be a part of something more, when they get treated like crap just because it is
"tradition". Those tradition were made by people who wanted to humiliate them to a point that they physiologically and physically can't

Why Hazing Should Be Allowed In College
College life brings many thoughts to mindВ…friendships, football , pizza, late nights, parties, fraternities, sororities, as well as racial discrimination,
binge drinking, hazing and dying. The latter part of this list may not come naturally to most people, but they are frightening realities of the Greek
system. Parents send their children to college assuming they will be in a safe, educational environment while enjoying all the benefits campus life has
to offer, including fraternities and sororities. They do not expect a phone call in the early hours of the morning notifying them of their child's death.
Since March of 2000, over 60 people have died in events associated with fraternities, alcohol and/or hazing (Marklein p. A3). ... Show more content on

A national survey of college students by Harvard researchers found that nearly half of males and more than a third of females engage in binge
drinking. Among Greek students the numbers skyrocket: 86% of fraternity members and 80% of sorority members living in chapter houses are likely to
engage in binge drinking (Marklein). The frequent focus fraternities and sororities place on alcohol encourages excessive consumption, unfortunately
causing the development of alcoholism and incidents of alcohol poisoning. The term hazing is defined as "any conduct or method of initiation into any
student organization, whether on public or private property, which willfully or recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of any student or
other person" (UMass). Whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the weather, forced consumption of food, liquor, beverages, ,
brutal treatment, extended isolation, sleep deprivation, and forced physical activities that adversely affect physical health and safety are just some
known acts of hazing that Greek members may force their "brothers" and "sisters" to undergo. Imagine getting an update from your college student.

It is important to discuss the history behind fraternities and sororities in order to gain a full understanding of how they can affect ways in which
students interact with each other. The first Greek letter organization was created in 1776 as a way for students to meet with each other and discuss
current events and literature. From there on, more of these groups were started at schools around the country. It was rare to have women be appointed
into one of these because of their lesser social status. It was not until almost 100 years later that a women's organization was founded. Because of their
rich history, fraternities are more dominate than sororities and much more well–off. In America, there is a large history of women being devalued and

Membership In Fraternities And Sororities
The decrease in membership in fraternities and sororities has occurred due to negative representation in media and criminal reputations. However,
students should join fraternities and sororities because together they can do work for charities, volunteer, and fundraise. Students should also become
members to be a part of a group life in which you are essentially guaranteed lifelong friendships and a thriving social life. Although the monetary cost
may be high and the superficial representation in media makes fraternity and sorority members look daft and trouble–making, the benefits to
membership include helping out communities and being held responsible for your academic and extracurricular activities. The words fraternity and
sorority can define any group of men and women that come together to form a club, but the words are well–known for college Greek life organizations.
Fraternities and sororities are known for their private imitations and rules, which sometimes can only be learned about by becoming a part of the club.

laws (Beitman). Fraternities and sororities are known to have a bad reputation due to media. However, not all members participate in reckless,
dangerous, or violent behavior. It is simply that out of such a large group there must exist some criminals or people who exhibit unseemly behaviors,

How Fraternities and Sororities Impact Students (Or Do They?)
Drinking, academics, and social behavior under the microscope
Published on September 1, 2011 by Alan Reifman, Ph.D. in On the Campus
Right around now is the start of the academic year at American universities. Among the traditional activities accompanying the start of school is
fraternity/sorority rush, in which students who wish to join a Greek–letter organization attend functions to learn about and select from the different
houses and the fraternities and sororities decide which students they would like to invite to become members.

320). Robbins lists several additional problem areas, such as an atmosphere of conformity, intolerance, and "constantly being judged;" a heavy reliance
on men for social validation; and enormous time and financial commitments. In some sororities, members are officially required to attend a certain
percentage of events and even when not technically required, many feel implicitly that they should attend sorority activities over important outside
functions.
For some people, memories from the Greek years appear to have a special significance, even influencing behavior decades later. In his book, Beer and
Circus about three A's of university life (academics, athletics, and alcohol), Murray Sperber writes about fraternity alumni seeking a little
cross–generational bonding with current members through sharing memories of alcohol mayhem. "The main storytellers are often alumni, and they
frequently gather in their old fraternity houses to narrate the tales and, on occasion, to try to relive them" (p. 152).
The overwhelming majority of academic research on Greek life appears to be on heavy drinking and other substance use, with studies consistently
showing that Greek–organization members drink more heavily than matched non–members (here and here).

Analysis Of The Outdated Double Standard Plaguing Greek...
The article by Carly Stern entitled "The Outdated Double Standard Plaguing Greek Life" has a clear theme, her title states just that. The double
standard that exists in Greek Life, chapter recognized organizations, is the limitations Sorority houses have. She starts out stating that "the majority
of the 26 recognized sororities are forbidden from hosting parties deserving alcohol in chapter houses... even if residents are 21". While Fraternities
are given permission to host parties by paying extra in insurance to cover the cost of damages, Sororities are not allowed to do so, many of these
Sororities are not even allowed to have male guests in their home as guests. With this being the 21st century women are more proactive and
independent and they are breaking barriers in academia and I the professional world, but yet under national chapters Sorority sisters are being restricted.

Many women admit that they in fact feel safer on their own turf because they are familiar with the house, they also have the say with what happens and
can have more control. While many Sorority women feel perfectly safe going to parties in Fraternity homes, there are many that do not and many that
would just like the option to host a party or have over male friends. She goes onto to concluding that Fraternities and institutions are not to blame but
that it comes from the national chapters, that "Panhellenic must reframe these obsolete double standards to convey that Sorority women can, and

College Fraternities And Sororities Serve As Exclusive
One of the historic facets of university life, among special interest clubs, sports teams, and volunteer organizations is Greek life. College fraternities and
sororities serve as exclusive groups denoted by Greek letters where men and women bond, forming "brotherhoods" and "sisterhoods" with fellow
members, getting involved on campus, practicing philanthropy and community service, and creating long–lasting friendships. At face value, Greek life
seems like an ideal environment for all entering college students who want to get involved and socialize; however, there are many complexities and
undertones that can be attributed to the Greek system. Greek organizations are known for their competitive "rush" process where prospective
members undergo an interview process in multiple social settings to receive bids from fraternity and sorority houses (Nelson 8). Sororities, in
particular, are usually extremely selective during rush, as they must "[maintain] a specific appearance" as a whole, and bid on aspiring girls who
mirror the appearance and demeanor of the sorority (Nelson 7). Even though this superficiality exists in sororities, some affirm that they foster a sense
of community and support (Farrington 22) and promote self–efficacy and a thirst for academic excellence (Thompson 4). Controversies like hazing,
alcohol consumption at parties, and the establishment of a social hierarchy of female students in sororities have brought the topic of Greek

Greek Life: Fraternities And Sororities
Greek Life Fraternities and sororities have existed for centuries throughout the world, although more prominent in the United States. They are a social
organization, appealing to students attending colleges and universities. The first fraternity established was Phi Beta Kappa at the College of William

Greek communities share common ethics and strive to bring success to its graduates. According to thefraternityadvisor.com, Of the nation's 50 largest

Should Fraternities And Sororities Be Banned?
The question about Greek life on campus is whether if fraternities and sororities should be banned. The reasoning behind that is because of all the
sexual assault, hazing, and binge drinking happening on campus. All of those problems are causing people to be hurt, be raped, or be killed. But if
you look into it, Greek organization does have underage members. Colleges should not ban fraternities and sororities. Greek organizations are still
relevant on today's campus. Simon Riker, a freelance musician said, "I learned a lot about myself and other people, more than I would have
otherwise... offered me a tremendous amount of opportunities and a vast social network" (Friedman 990). Many fraternities are involved in their
communities. The fraternity and sorority would hold a fundraiser where they would raise more than $20 million for charity. Averagely most fraternities
have a slightly higher grade–point average from just the students who are not in a fraternity. The grade–point average is approximately 2.912
(Friedman 990). Fraternity and sorority members is more likely to be prepared after their graduation. The percent within the Greeks and the
non–Greeks on how prepared the students are after graduation is 37 percent Greek to 27 percent non–Greek (Friedman 990). Fraternities and sororities

environment. "Greek houses are run by student councils, which offer members many opportunities to develop leadership skills. These councils usually
consist of a president, a house manager or treasurer, and leadership roles in public outreach, philanthropy, social event planning, and member
discipline." (www.thespruce.com/greek–life–benefits–and–advantages–3570274) Greek life also gives an academic boost to their members. The

Through out middle and high school students become very close to the people that they see everyday. Students spend more time with the people in
their class than their family somedays. In the 4 years of high school students become very comfortable with these people and even though for a lot
these people are the only friends they have. After high school when everyone goes their separate ways many students start college alone, this puts a lot
of stress on many students that are having to live alone and take actual responsibilities on top of classwork and school work. Meeting people can be

The factors that are studied are 1) cumulative grade point average; 2) chapter involvement; 3) engagement in academic activities; 4) part–time work; 5)
and alcohol use. Three of the factors (engagement in academic activities, chapter involvement and part–time work) all affected cumulative grade point
average in a positive way. Alcohol use was the only factor to negatively affect cumulative grade point average over the term of a fraternity/sorority
member. This however is important to note because many of the events that a fraternity or sorority host are some way involved with alcohol. The study
sets forth a list of suggestions that should help continue the correlation between engagement and high GPA. Fraternities and sororities should help
establish and cultivate a culture of academic achievement throughout their organization, they should limit the use of alcohol to only social events, they
should seek out and confront members who are at–risk and they should start programing initiatives that are able to support the achievements of
members in an academic setting. It is also important to discuss the layout of the fraternity and sorority life at the university where this study takes place.

very exact process, one that requires the PNMs (Potential new members) to meet all of the chapters on campus. Chapters also have a "total"

is a great thing, and it puts people through a great experience to go through. Since hazing can endanger the physical safety of a person, and produces
mental, physical discomfort, and causes dismay, humiliation, and dehumanizes an individual, society needs to learn about hazing and stop it from
happening. We know that people consider it a tradition that has been going on for ages, but it's an appalling experience to go through. Everywhere
around the world hazing is happening and not one person can do a thing about it. The earliest recorded event of hazing occurred in eighteen
thirty–eight. The first recorded death happened in eighteen forty–eight. (Hank). So you can see why some may consider it a tradition. Many hazing
incidents do not just involve members of a certain group, but sometimes it can also include the coach or who is in charge of the group. Twenty–two
percent of coaches or advisors are involved in hazing towards the athlete or student. Many of the coaches and advisors even help perform the hazing

this kind of hazing was not allowed because of the potentially deadly condition of unusual kidney injury according to the National Kidney Foundation's

Benefits Of Pledging To A Sorority Or Fraternity
Most people when they think of college they think of majors, classes, and getting to meet new people but others look forward to pledging to a sorority
or fraternity. Pledging to a sorority or fraternity means making a life long commitment with people who then become your said brothers and said
sisters, but with pledging comes hazing. Hazing is humiliating and, in most cases, dangerous initiation rituals, but it is a typical thing that happens
when someone pledges. Although hazing is a tradition and has always been a part of pledging, it shouldn't be part of the process due to multiple cases
of death and the overall attitude towards it.

Greek Life Should Be Banned Off Of College Campuses
Over several decades, Greek life has been an integral part of colleges and universities throughout the United States. There is a high demand of "fitting
in" in today's society and a question that students, parents, and teachers alike often ask themselves is, "Does Greek life provide a more safe or harmful
environment?" With strong evidence, it is absolutely absurd to believe that fraternities and sororities do more good than they do harm. Various statistics
provide factual evidence as to why Greek life is a toxic and dangerous environment for many young adults. Between the rape culture, hazing, and
delinquency linked to the students associated with Greek life, it is time that it comes to an end for good so that students may have a more safe
and enjoyable college experience. Fraternities and Sororities should be banned off of college and university campuses due to the danger and drama
associated with them. First off, colleges and universities should ban Greek life on campuses for obvious reasons, the first being rape culture. Sexual
violence is not something to be swept under the rug and brushed off. It continues to be a massive problem everywhere in America, and colleges are
no exception. An article by The Guardian states, "Frat brothers rape 300% more. One in five women are sexually assaulted on campus" (Valenti,
2014). Looking at that statistic in real terms, 20% of females on a college campus will be sexually assaulted before they graduate. This evidence clearly

The Aspects of Hazing
The word hazing connotes a variety of different meanings depending on the stance one takes. Some people assume hazing provides the possible
prospect of bonding and social acceptance. Others conclude hazing creates a dividend between the society of fraternity and sorority organizations. No
matter what direction one takes, both sides have the ability to propose a positive solution that will effectively help the effects of hazing. Once a
personal analyzes the positive and negative aspects of hazing then he or she has the ability to propose a solution that will benefit both sides of hazing.

In claiming that another resultant of hazing prepares pledges for impending emotional, mental, and physical pain that will appear during their
adulthood, they persuade others to view hazing as they do. When pledges complete their hazing it brings forth unity amongst the brothers and sisters.
Not only do they see hazing as a means of bringing people together, but also for "weed[ing] out people who don't want to take the process seriously"
("Arguments For and Against"). No social group wants to have a member who does not commit his or herself to the fraternity or sorority. So
higher–status members feel the task of deciding who takes fraternity and sorority matters seriously bears on their shoulder alone. Pro–hazing
individuals believe hazing sets up a positive system of the deciding factor of who stays and goes. Overall they believe that hazing benefits either the
new pledge or the fraternity and sorority system as a whole. The stance that anti–hazing individuals most likely take come with the statistics that hazing
results in student death and possible sexual harassment. Individuals who also oppose the hazing ritual shall take the stance of saying it pressures
students to make senselessly foolish decisions. Hazing causes a loss of self–preservation. Hazing entices them to forget about his or her own self and
individuality and "to trade his or her humanity or self–respect in exchange for full inclusion

The Similarities Between Fraternity And Sorority
Sometimes they emerge a new, mature, and dedicated person or it could crush someone mentally and spiritually due to their experiences within the
organization.
Every fraternity and sorority is different. Contrary to popular belief hazing has not come to an end, and it is still implemented in hundreds of schools.
There are different ways of hazing, which I think different cultures handle differently.
Sororities haze by mentally and verbally abusing their pledges. I have friends that have been through the process and they have called me crying
with stories about the degrading things that their "big sisters" said to them. I do know that in sororities they make a point of telling their pledges that
they will tear them down to build them back up. The tearing down part consist of bullying and breaking the pledge down mentally, making her feel
worthless, and then slowly they build them back up with compliments and sisterhood; so that the pledge realizes that she is a new woman due to her
sorority and her sisters which is where the lifetime bonds come in at.
Fraternities are built upon masculinity. It is a man's game, and it is quite ignorant. Who can sleep with the most girls? Who can drink the most beers?
Who can do the most push–ups? In addition, who can withstand the torture and abuse that it takes to be apart of the brotherhood? As I mentioned
earlier, I believe that different cultures express their masculinity in different ways. Black men in the black community have no wriggle

The techniques that are used by all fraternities and sororities are called rushing and hazing. Rushing is the act of popularizing a given fraternity or
sorority to attract new members. As mentioned in the introduction, the alternate forms of rushing cover a large spectrum, but they all have the same
goal: be the best to attract the best. Hazing is another variable method closely aligned with fraternities and sororities, but hazing for different
fraternities and sororities can have vastly different outcomes. Hazing, in its most simple and basic form, is the imposition of strenuous or
complicated tasks as a form of initiation. In contrast to popular belief, a lot of normal activity is considered hazing. For example, a college football
team might tell the freshman that they are responsible for cleaning up loose garbage on the field after a practice. As mild as this example might be,
hazing can be taken to an extreme and often has poor outcomes that can severely damage the psyche of an individual. However, a sense of tradition
and continuation continually inspires hazing among social groups, but fraternities and sororities especially. Hazing has become a form a bonding that
allow new initiates to become closer as a brotherhood or sisterhood; these two both being the most important part of fraternities and sororities. To
create an everlasting bond, Greek organizations promote ultimate a familial intimacy that is unparalleled by other social groups. It is in this strive for
brotherhood and sisterhood that mistakes are made and people begin to

Sorority Vs Fraternity

  • 1. Sorority Vs Fraternity Although college life is portrayed to many as one big partyВќ, I recently have found that this accusation is unrealistic. The truth is, college is an overwhelming and intimidating experience. Preconceived notions of how college really works, ultimately ruins the reality of college life. The first falsity is about Sorority and Fraternity life. Being in a Fraternity or Sorority is not depicted honestly. In college, most people picture typical Fraternity and Sorority parties. However, Sorority and Fraternity work is geared more towards community service rather than parties. All Fraternities and Sororities are required to have a philanthropy that is well chartered. Academics in college are focused on far more than social events. Regularly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... College reality differs greatly from the reality that is exhibited by most. Upon entering college one must take into account the difficult tasks that are ahead. Not all of your instructors will be equally clear about what they expect of your paper. Some will tell you in detail what to read, how to think about it, and how to organize your paper, but others will ask a general question just to see what you can do with it. Some instructors will expect you to stay close to the assignment, penalizing you if you depart from it; others will encourage you to strike out on your own. Some few instructors may want you to demonstrate only that you have read and understood a reading, but most will want you to use your understanding of the reading as a jumping–off point for an analysis and an argument. Often, students who struggle in college do so because they are unclear about what their college professors expect. This confusion might come from attending college for the wrong reasons, or it might originate in different experiences. The secret is to know what professors expect in terms of basic mental habits and skills, and how those expectations often differ from earlier educational ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Fraternity And Sorority College students have many life altering questions they must answer through the journey of further education. From a student's major, living circumstance, classes, and getting involved on campus, it can start to get stressful if there are mixed signals about what they are getting into. Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet people and improve skills needed after graduation. A student might choose to be involved in Greek life because of the parties, friends, and job application quirks down the road (Joining a Fraternity, np). The outcome involves those things, but it also involves leadership traits, lifelong relationships, the ability to surpass the negative public perception of Fraternity and Sorority men and women, and keep up good grades. While involved in Greek life, each chapter has an executive council which is the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a student does not have that certain GPA requirement they get dropped from recruitment before the chapter even considers looking at anything else. Students must maintain a certain GPA to stay in the chapter. Most fraternities or sororities have weekly study groups. My chapter has a Geek of the Week, which goes to whoever makes the highest grades on major tests. If a student's GPA drops under a certain score, then they have to have a certain amount of study hours or note checks until their grade goes back up. If their GPA is so low for a long amount of time they might get kicked out of the fraternity or sorority. Students knowing that they have to keep their grades up for a fraternity or sorority could help them graduate. "A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non–fraternity/sorority persons graduate" (Fraternity and Sorority Facts, np). Fraternities and sororities are helping their members graduate rather than helping them party all the time like most people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of The Greek Community How the Greek Community Can Improve its Relationship with the Public The Greek community is a longstanding tradition found at most colleges and universities across the country. Greek Letter fraternities and sororities were designed to instill principles of friendship, loyalty, service, and academic success into their members (Alford, Joe). Over time, many of these values have become more difficult to recognize in chapters across the nation because of multiple incidents involving partying, binge drinking, and especially hazing. These are the issues that have come to define Greek life on campuses in the United States today, and because of that Greek life as a whole has developed a nasty reputation in the eyes of the public. Although these are what most people think about when they imagine a typical fraternity or sorority, it is not the way these once great institutions were designed to be. The Greek community needs to do a better job of working together to prove to their campuses, and to the nation, that they are about much more than the issues that surround them. A major reform is in order to help the Greek system return to the values that they were founded upon, so that they can continue to be an important part of millions of young adult's college experiences. What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word fraternity? For many people, the first word to come to mind is hazing. • 4. Why Fraternities Should be Banned Essay Recently, the idea of partaking in a fraternity has become more prevalent. Young adults are captivated with wanting to live the Greek life. The clothes and parties seem to drawn in teens like a magnet. However what these teens do not realize is the terrible things associated with fraternities. Many fraternities have a reputation for turning college students into drunks, treating women vulgarly, enacting violent hazing against other fraternity members and disrupting the true reason why students go to college. For these reasons fraternities should be banned altogether on college campuses. First of all, fraternities have proven to be a serious reason for underage drinking and binge drinking. These young adults have far less supervision and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Men taking advantage of women is considered a social norm. Also, When fraternity members admitted to doing things that by law are considered rape they did not believe that they were rapist. They insist that if a girl is intoxicated then they are still able to consent to sex. Granted not all Greeks are this way. Many fraternity members treat women respectfully and contribute greatly to bettering the college experience. The problem is too many offenders do exist and they have ruined the once credible reputation of fraternities everywhere. Furthermore, fraternities are infamous for their requirement to pledge in order to join the brotherhood. Although the specific acts inflicted on pledges is known only by members of fraternity, it is commonly known that hazing is part of the initiation. The pledges have to complete a series of humiliating and sometime dangerous rituals in order to join. They could be forced to consume excessive amount of alcohols and drugs, or be physically beaten or be publicly humiliated. Little known fact, white fraternities generally use alcohol for hazing while black fraternities result to physical violence. In a survey conducted by Dr. Susan Lipkins "31% of Fraternity and sorority members agree that a significant element in an initiation rite is humiliation." "Also, many of the Greek Leaders agree that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fraternities and Sororities consist of men or women that share common goals and aspirations. • 6. The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities Essay The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities Joining fraternities and sororities has been a long tradition among many college and university students within the United States. As the number of students entering colleges and universities grow, the influence and pressure to join fraternities and sororities grow as well. According to aresearch project conducted by Dr. Gary D. Malaney, associate professor of education and director of student affairs at the University of Massachusetts, "58.6% [of 413 students surveyed] reported having at least a few friends who belong to the Greek Area" (Malaney 2). However, the Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Miami in February 2004 was found at fault for the death of Chad Meredith for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Among the many fraternities in the United States, some fraternities are said to accept students after "drinking a whole bottle of alcohol nonstop" (Brown). Flushing toilets after a current member takes a dump, not sleeping for two days, carrying bricks in backpacks for weeks, and sexual intercourse are some of the many shocking things new members will do to earn their way into a fraternity or sorority. According to Kevin Brown, "you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do to get in, and that could be anything." Some sororities "will paddle each other till their behinds are bleeding. They will force girls to do things like boob ranking, where they're given five minutes to examine each other's chests and rank themselves by size" (Morehouse) before getting accepted. Clearly, fraternities and sororities often do not respect the rights, opinions and well–being of their potential members. For many fraternities and sororities, academics are certainly not the key methods of attracting new members. Surprisingly, fraternities and sororities have quite an effect on student academic performances. According to Malaney's research, only 4% of all fraternity members surveyed said their academic performance improved while 26% claimed that their performance got worse (Malaney 3). This all sound fine and dandy at first but not all Greek life is how it said to be. Yes it is a fun and you make friendships but, all that come with a price and that is at the start of initiation. The definition of initiation is the action of admitting someone into a secret, obscure society or group. Fraternities and sororities are a group of society and they abuse boys and girls wanting to be a part of something more, when they get treated like crap just because it is "tradition". • 8. Why Hazing Should Be Allowed In College College life brings many thoughts to mindВ…friendships, football , pizza, late nights, parties, fraternities, sororities, as well as racial discrimination, binge drinking, hazing and dying. The latter part of this list may not come naturally to most people, but they are frightening realities of the Greek system. Parents send their children to college assuming they will be in a safe, educational environment while enjoying all the benefits campus life has to offer, including fraternities and sororities. They do not expect a phone call in the early hours of the morning notifying them of their child's death. Since March of 2000, over 60 people have died in events associated with fraternities, alcohol and/or hazing (Marklein p. A3). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A national survey of college students by Harvard researchers found that nearly half of males and more than a third of females engage in binge drinking. Among Greek students the numbers skyrocket: 86% of fraternity members and 80% of sorority members living in chapter houses are likely to engage in binge drinking (Marklein). The frequent focus fraternities and sororities place on alcohol encourages excessive consumption, unfortunately causing the development of alcoholism and incidents of alcohol poisoning. The term hazing is defined as "any conduct or method of initiation into any student organization, whether on public or private property, which willfully or recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of any student or other person" (UMass). Whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the weather, forced consumption of food, liquor, beverages, , brutal treatment, extended isolation, sleep deprivation, and forced physical activities that adversely affect physical health and safety are just some known acts of hazing that Greek members may force their "brothers" and "sisters" to undergo. Imagine getting an update from your college student. Your freshman son calls home, reporting he has just made the lacrosse team and is excited to receive his fraternity pin the next day. • 10. Fraternities And Sororities It is important to discuss the history behind fraternities and sororities in order to gain a full understanding of how they can affect ways in which students interact with each other. The first Greek letter organization was created in 1776 as a way for students to meet with each other and discuss current events and literature. From there on, more of these groups were started at schools around the country. It was rare to have women be appointed into one of these because of their lesser social status. It was not until almost 100 years later that a women's organization was founded. Because of their rich history, fraternities are more dominate than sororities and much more well–off. • 11. Membership In Fraternities And Sororities The decrease in membership in fraternities and sororities has occurred due to negative representation in media and criminal reputations. However, students should join fraternities and sororities because together they can do work for charities, volunteer, and fundraise. Students should also become members to be a part of a group life in which you are essentially guaranteed lifelong friendships and a thriving social life. Although the monetary cost may be high and the superficial representation in media makes fraternity and sorority members look daft and trouble–making, the benefits to membership include helping out communities and being held responsible for your academic and extracurricular activities. The words fraternity and sorority can define any group of men and women that come together to form a club, but the words are well–known for college Greek life organizations. Fraternities and sororities are known for their private imitations and rules, which sometimes can only be learned about by becoming a part of the club. Drinking, academics, and social behavior under the microscope Published on September 1, 2011 by Alan Reifman, Ph.D. in On the Campus Right around now is the start of the academic year at American universities. Among the traditional activities accompanying the start of school is fraternity/sorority rush, in which students who wish to join a Greek–letter organization attend functions to learn about and select from the different houses and the fraternities and sororities decide which students they would like to invite to become members. Robbins lists several additional problem areas, such as an atmosphere of conformity, intolerance, and "constantly being judged;" a heavy reliance on men for social validation; and enormous time and financial commitments. In some sororities, members are officially required to attend a certain percentage of events and even when not technically required, many feel implicitly that they should attend sorority activities over important outside functions. For some people, memories from the Greek years appear to have a special significance, even influencing behavior decades later. In his book, Beer and Circus about three A's of university life (academics, athletics, and alcohol), Murray Sperber writes about fraternity alumni seeking a little cross–generational bonding with current members through sharing memories of alcohol mayhem. "The main storytellers are often alumni, and they frequently gather in their old fraternity houses to narrate the tales and, on occasion, to try to relive them" (p. 152). The overwhelming majority of academic research on Greek life appears to be on heavy drinking and other substance use, with studies consistently showing that Greek–organization members drink more heavily than matched non–members (here and here). ... The article by Carly Stern entitled "The Outdated Double Standard Plaguing Greek Life" has a clear theme, her title states just that. The double standard that exists in Greek Life, chapter recognized organizations, is the limitations Sorority houses have. She starts out stating that "the majority of the 26 recognized sororities are forbidden from hosting parties deserving alcohol in chapter houses... even if residents are 21". While Fraternities are given permission to host parties by paying extra in insurance to cover the cost of damages, Sororities are not allowed to do so, many of these Sororities are not even allowed to have male guests in their home as guests. • 14. College Fraternities And Sororities Serve As Exclusive One of the historic facets of university life, among special interest clubs, sports teams, and volunteer organizations is Greek life. College fraternities and sororities serve as exclusive groups denoted by Greek letters where men and women bond, forming "brotherhoods" and "sisterhoods" with fellow members, getting involved on campus, practicing philanthropy and community service, and creating long–lasting friendships. At face value, Greek life seems like an ideal environment for all entering college students who want to get involved and socialize; however, there are many complexities and undertones that can be attributed to the Greek system. Greek organizations are known for their competitive "rush" process where prospective members undergo an interview process in multiple social settings to receive bids from fraternity and sorority houses (Nelson 8). Sororities, in particular, are usually extremely selective during rush, as they must "[maintain] a specific appearance" as a whole, and bid on aspiring girls who mirror the appearance and demeanor of the sorority (Nelson 7). Even though this superficiality exists in sororities, some affirm that they foster a sense of community and support (Farrington 22) and promote self–efficacy and a thirst for academic excellence (Thompson 4). Controversies like hazing, alcohol consumption at parties, and the establishment of a social hierarchy of female students in sororities have brought the topic of Greek ... The reasoning behind that is because of all the sexual assault, hazing, and binge drinking happening on campus. All of those problems are causing people to be hurt, be raped, or be killed. But if you look into it, Greek organization does have underage members. Colleges should not ban fraternities and sororities. Greek organizations are still relevant on today's campus. Social Acceptance In College Essay College Fraternities and Sororities – The High Cost of Social Acceptance College students who choose to join fraternities or sororities do so because of their need for social acceptance. Nine of the twelve felt that they would not have enough time to devote themselves to a fraternity or sorority. What I found to be the most interesting was that ten felt that the reason people join these organizations are just paying for friendship. The only reason these non–members agreed that it would be a beneficial to join a fraternity or sorority would be for academic achievements, such as the Honors fraternity, or one that pertained to your major. Twelve members of fraternities or sororities were also surveyed. Eleven stated that they joined so they can meet new people and make friends. Only five agreed that they joined so they could help the community. Eight of the ten felt they needed to join so they would have a place to party and also meet girls. Three felt that being a member taught you leadership skills. Two joined because they thought it would look good on a resume. My second method of research was a personal interview. The tearing down part consist of bullying and breaking the pledge down mentally, making her feel worthless, and then slowly they build them back up with compliments and sisterhood; so that the pledge realizes that she is a new woman due to her sorority and her sisters which is where the lifetime bonds come in at. Fraternities are built upon masculinity. It is a man's game, and it is quite ignorant. Who can sleep with the most girls? Who can drink the most beers? Who can do the most push–ups? In addition, who can withstand the torture and abuse that it takes to be apart of the brotherhood? As I mentioned earlier, I believe that different cultures express their masculinity in different ways. Black men in the black community have no wriggle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The techniques that are used by all fraternities and sororities are called rushing and hazing. Rushing is the act of popularizing a given fraternity or sorority to attract new members. As mentioned in the introduction, the alternate forms of rushing cover a large spectrum, but they all have the same goal: be the best to attract the best. Hazing is another variable method closely aligned with fraternities and sororities, but hazing for different fraternities and sororities can have vastly different outcomes. Hazing, in its most simple and basic form, is the imposition of strenuous or complicated tasks as a form of initiation. In contrast to popular belief, a lot of normal activity is considered hazing. For example, a college football team might tell the freshman that they are responsible for cleaning up loose garbage on the field after a practice. As mild as this example might be, hazing can be taken to an extreme and often has poor outcomes that can severely damage the psyche of an individual. However, a sense of tradition and continuation continually inspires hazing among social groups, but fraternities and sororities especially. Hazing has become a form a bonding that allow new initiates to become closer as a brotherhood or sisterhood; these two both being the most important part of fraternities and sororities. To create an everlasting bond, Greek organizations promote ultimate a familial intimacy that is unparalleled by other social groups. It is in this strive for brotherhood and sisterhood that mistakes are made and people begin to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
