Essay on U.S. Involvement in Darfur
"History repeats itself", is a commonly used phrase and it is one that can be found to hold true in
many situations. Throughout history there have been many incidents in which mass murder has
occurred. A modern day example of mass murder in a conflict that is ongoing is the genocides
occurring in Darfur, Sudan. The corrupt government in the country supports a group called the
Janjaweed, which is the militia group that is mainly responsible for the large number of Darfur
residents that have been murdered, raped, or displaced (1). Although the exact number is not known,
most sources estimate around 400,000 people have died and another 2,500,000 have been displaced
(1). The conflict started in 2003 and although it is not as severe as it has ... Show more content on

There are many valid reasons that support the United States becoming involved in the conflict going
on in Darfur. One reason that the presence of the United Stated is necessary is because if the Darfur
conflict is not contained sooner than later it has the potential to become escalated. The longer the
United States does nothing to stop the genocide in Darfur the more power the militia group will gain
which will not only lead to more death but could create a power that will be harder to control in the
future. Recently oil has been discovered in Sudan. This provides the United States with economic
interest in the conflict occurring in Darfur. If the Untied States was able to support an end to this
crisis and leave a favorable impression on the nation, then they in turn may be willing to aid us
helping the United States with oil. In the past the United States has made many empty promises
saying that we are going to be active in helping control the conflict that was occurring in Sudan. By
sending in help the United States can regain credibility that they will follow through with their
word. There are many people who are upset with the way that the United States has chosen to handle
this situation. They have promised to send aid and resources but have followed with little efforts.
The United States could gain respect from those around them and have a major role in a country
with growing interest. If the United

With America's history of people fighting for their rights, we have become accustomed to the idea
that activism needs to be extreme; to cause riots, have aggression, and for people to be put in jail to
make a point. We have created an image that there needs to be a fierce willingness to fight, in order
for activism to be effective. As Malcolm Gladwell describes in "Why the Revolution Should not be
Tweeted", he reminds us of what 'real' activism is and how other generations have risked their lives
to make a difference, in both their lives and the future of America. He does not think that activists
can be considered true activists if they are non–violent when protesting for their rights. However,
Gladwell should consider that protesting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ravioli, the imaginary friend, was always on a run. She could observe from afar. In order for
activism to be strong, it needs more than one person and one idea. The more people or
acquaintance's that are reached, the stronger the support system is. In order to have an even stronger
system we need our supporters to understand and believe in the action that is being protested. Social
media is capable with not only getting in contact with other people but it allows you to grab those
people's attentions in many different ways. These followers need to be convinced and taught about
the different options that they can be given. Many people follow trends, and with social media being
a big part of the trend it makes it easier to have an audience. It is easy for people to invite people to
a group, or event on Facebook or even having a following of tweeters on Twitter because people are
able to add descriptions. In this descriptions majority of people who are protesting are able to write
who they are, what the problem is, give ideas of solutions to the problem and overall a way to
convince their readers to press 'Like', 're–tweet', 'Follow' or 'Attend'. With their explanation they can
create a bandwagon of supporters and build a strong willed support system. Gladwell used the
example of the Bhatia needing a bone–marrow transplant. Even though people helped by signing up

In conclusion, Sudan should use is power of Africa's largest country to create peaceful movements
and to provide multiculturalism. The principal cause of those conflicts are about money and power.
If they tough more about the way of living, they would have a better lifestyle. Also, they don't have
any social system to help them.
Giving money and donation will not resolve genocides. Those people need to stand up and we have
to help these civilizations with the strength of our words.
Finally, the power of globalization could change everything. With social networks that we have
today, it's impossible to think that some country still have that kind of important country. We all
know that, at the end, someone will have to live with the consequences. ... Show more content on

On 5 May 2006, the Sudanese government signed the Darfur Peace Agreement[47] along with the
faction of the SLA led by Minni Minnawi. However, the agreement was rejected by the smaller
Justice and Equality Movement and a rival faction of the SLA led by Abdul Wahid al Nur.The
accord was orchestrated by chief negotiator Salim Ahmed Salim(working with the African Union),
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Robert B. Zoellick, AU representatives and other foreign officials

The 115–page agreement included agreements on national and state power–sharing, demilitarization

Genocide: A Historical Perspective Essay
According to Dictionary.com Genocide is the "deliberate and systematic extermination of a national,
racial, political, or cultural group." A few notable examples of genocide would be the War in Darfur,
the Rwandan Genocide, and the Holocaust which are all among some of the worst genocides of the
20th century. The situation in Darfur is in part still going on today, while the Holocaust and
Rwandan genocide are now a serious part of our world's history. Each of these three genocides
occurred due to political powers spinning out of control, and resulting in mass killings of those that
the leaders did not favor. Although it seems that genocide is a part of history and it is put in the back
of everyone's minds, genocide does still exist today ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

search of firewood or other needed supplies ("Q&A...")
Many activists refer to the crisis in Darfur as genocide, including the Save Darfur Coalition and the
Genocide Intervention Network, though some argue that there is a lack of evidence in pointing to
genocide. However the topic could no longer be debated when on 14 July 2008, prosecutors at the
International Criminal Court (ICC), filed ten charges of war crimes against Sudan's President Omar
al–Bashir, three counts of genocide, five of crimes against humanity and two of murder. The ICC's
prosecutors have claimed that al–Bashir "masterminded and implemented a plan to destroy in
substantial part" three tribal groups in Darfur because of their ethnicity. It has been seven years since
the genocide in Darfur began; over 2.7 million people have been displaced, or killed due to the
genocide that takes place in Darfur ("Q&A..."). In 1994 between the months of April and June
approximately 800,000 Tutsis were killed in Rwanda. That is a systematic killing brought out
majorly by the Hutus. The genocide was started when the death of the Rwandan President Juvenal
Habyarimana, a Hutu occurred. The president's plane was shot down above Kigali airport on 6 April
1994. The Hutus pointed their fingers to the Tutsis and deemed them responsible for this attack,
though it is believed by the Tutsis that it was a Hutu extremist. After

Rwanda Genocide Persuasive Essay
"In Rwanda, one person's God is another person's Satan". This quote perfectly describes the main
reason genocide is ever committed, that being one group thinks it is a beneficial thing to their
country/community and one that absolutely despises that their friends, neighbors, and family are
being slaughtered en masse. Rwandan genocide was a mass killing of the Tutsi population in the
1990's, and it ranks seventh in terms of number of people killed in mass murders and/or genocides.
Of course the first is the Holocaust, where Adolf Hitler systematically killed six million members of
the Jewish faith. The common theme of both the Rwandan genocide and the Holocaust is that many
people of the same faith or race died. Thus defines the term 'genocide'. ... Show more content on

The global powers failed to step in quickly and took so long that a mister Eric Reeves had time to
write an article called The World's Abandonment of Darfur in which he writes "The United States,
Britain and France need to muscle up politically in the Security Council now or the fate of Darfur
will be dictated by the very men who began the genocide 12 years ago. This would be
unprecedented in the grim history of genocide" (Reeves). Clearly, the global superpowers need to
step up their game in the international community to help stop things like this from happening in the
future. If these countries could not even prevent the same tragic events from happening back to
back, that is terrible. Granted, the restructuring of a state can be a long and difficult project to
undertake, just look at the Middle East and the United States' involvement, but it is necessary to
make sure that the same people, or any people at all, are incriminated and tortured like those living
in the Darfur region were. The global heavyweights, at least, need to intervene in any restructuring
post–genocide to ensure that the county does not fall back into a state in which mass killings are

Genocide in Darfur Essay
The Holocaust of Today: Genocide in Darfur By definition, genocide is "the deliberate and
systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group." According to Eric
Reeves, writer for the Sudan Tribune, genocide "encompasses not only the killing of members of a
national, ethical, racial, or religious group, as such, but also deliberately inflicting on the group
conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or part." Whatever
genocide may be defined as, it is the most grotesque form of massacre known to man. Millions of
people are killed daily by hate groups in league with government organizations much like the Nazis
of Adolf Hitler's Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. One of the ... Show more content on

This group works alongside Sudanese soldiers in an attempt to eliminate non–Arab Africans from
the region. More than two and a half million people have been displaced as villages are raided and
burned to the ground. The defenseless villagers, if caught, are slaughtered mercilessly. If they are
fortunate, they might run fast enough to escape the Janjawid soldiers. The refugees seek sanctuary in
expatriate camps in Chad and others hide within the Darfur region among the fallen trees and in
make–shift shelters. In the camps alone, two hundred and fifty thousand survive on less and less as
resources are depleted. Even in the camps, the people are not free from the fear that haunts them.
Many of the camps have come under rebel attack and thousands have died as a result. Unfortunately,
no one is out of harm's way. Any non–Arab is subject to Janjawid attack with little or no chance to
flee. Regrettably, the Janjawid does not target males selectively. The number of women and girls
that have been abducted, raped, and tortured is unknown. Eighty percent of the people in Chad
refugee camps are these women. Because they have been displaced, driven from their homes by
force, they are extremely vulnerable to assault. These unfortunate women and girls are most often
victims of sexual abuse rather than outright murder. These women suffer from physical and mental

Genocide in Darfur Darfur is the western region of the African country of Sudan. Currently, the
people of Darfur have been continually attacked by the Sudanese army and by proxy–militia
controlled by the Sudanese government. Families are being uprooted and starved, children
tormented and murdered by the thousands and women raped without punishment. Innocent civilians
in Darfur continue to be victims of unthinkable brutality. Many people have become homeless and

Furthermore, the region of Darfur is about the size of Texas. Its enormity is one of the sources of the
current conflict because most of Darfur is not easily accessible. Traveling in and out of the secluded
areas is very tough. There are an unfortunately small amount of all–weather roads. The attackers can
travel the terrain much more easily, making it even more difficult for the villagers. The isolated
areas make it hard for journalists and humanitarian workers to learn about the activity in the region.
This makes it also not easy to gauge the actual number of people affected by the desolation of
famine and warfare. In addition, Darfur's terrain can be classified into four individual sections:
mountains, basement rock, watercourses, and sand. In Darfur a large amount of the arable land
consists of goz (soil sediment where vegetation grows). Goz can be useful for farming but primarily
offers land for grazing herds. Then, through a process the land around the watercourses and the goz
makes the land fertile. Each year the land becomes less arable. Also desertification (process that
includes arable land decreasing and the desert area increasing), deforestation, the drought and over
use of the land have fueled the conflict between various tribal groups. This has caused most of
Darfur's population to become dependent on the southern region. The lack of fertile land is causing

Darfur Crisis Essay
In March 2004, the world was taken aback when Mukesh Kapila, a United Nations (UN) Human
Rights Coordinator for Sudan, announced during an interview with the UN that the "world's greatest
humanitarian crisis" was occurring in Darfur. Until then, the world had been concerned by the
raging civil war in South Sudan and the peace talks associated with it. Darfur was a nowhere,
unknown and uncared about for centuries. Suddenly newspapers were wild with reports of the 21st
Century's first genocide, and support was being drummed up from all corners of the world. But then
the Asian tsunami on 26 December 2004 occurred and what is known as "world opinion" moved on
to bigger disasters. Yet the crisis in Darfur continued; however, now organizations such as the UN,
European Union (EU), and African Union (AU) began to take interest, develop aid packages, and
planned for intervention. Yet still, in 2016, the crisis continues. Several ... Show more content on

In 1916, Darfur was invaded by the British for fear that it would be used as a stepping stone for the
Ottoman Empire to expand east during World War I. Subsequently Darfur became a part of the
Anglo–Egyptian Sudan, yet it remained an afterthought. Government funding was generally given to
Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, with leftovers rarely available for Darfur; consequently, the benign
neglect of Darfur began. The British implemented a governance system of "Indirect Rule," one in
which changes were introduced "gently," and power was exercised through local traditional
authorities who would "respect native culture." At first glance, "indirect rule" appeared to be
culturally respectful; but in reality, it only served to create a two–tier society that marginalized the

Genocide Past and Current
In the past 150 years, tens of millions of men, women and children have lost their lives to ethnic
cleansing or genocide. Although the definition is often scrutinized, according to Merriam Webster,
"Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political or cultural group". The
most notable event associated with the term is the Holocaust. Stated by Judah Gribets, Edward
Greenstein and Regina Stein, "nearly six million Jews fell victim to genocide during the years of the
Holocaust". Of This number, one million were children who were unable to take care of themselves.

Hearing about genocide was nothing new to many people, but because of the new upbringing of the
internet and availability of news broadcasts, the entire world was able to see it for the first time. It
was always well known that the Rwandan population is very one–sided. The majority of the people
living there are Sunni Muslims or "Hutus" whereas the minority consists of Shia Muslims, or
"Tutsi". According to Sarah Hymowitz and Amelia Parker, Tutsi are said to be of higher class
because they are more white, and the Hutus are common people of middle class. Although the
distrust and hatred between the two groups of people was always slightly present, nobody had any
clue about what would be the outcome. Following the establishment of the Hutu led government in
1961, the oppression of the Tutsi followed not far behind. Although many Tutsi fled in fear of
imprisonment into neighboring Uganda, those of the Tutsi who were still in Rwanda (probably due
to family or marriage ties) were seen as lesser beings by the new Hutu Government. At the time, and
for two decades it seemed like the situation was under control. When the Rwandan Patiotic front
(RPF) was formed in 1985, tensions escalated. The RPF was a group of Tutsi exiles who demanded
that they be granted the right to return to their homeland and end the long period of discrimination
against the Tutsi. The RPF rebels invaded Rwanda in October 1990, re–igniting Tutsi hatred
throughout Rwanda. It was this act of Tutsi aggression,

religion, and everything else that defines a group of people as different from another group of

Military regimes that favor Islamic–situated governments have controlled national politics since
Sudan gained freedom from Anglo–Egyptian co–rule in 1956. Sudan was entangled in two post–
independence civil war amid the greater part of the rest of the twentieth century. These wars were
based on the northern Muslims, Arabs economic, political, and social control of the more largely
populated non–Muslim, non–Arab southern Sudanese. The first war ended with the 1972 Addis
Ababa Agreement, which granted significant regional autonomy to southern Sudan on internal
issues. (CIA 2015) The second civil war started in 1983 because of longstanding issues uplifted by
then President Jaafar Nimeiri's choice to implement Sharia law. Arrangements between the
government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army, or SPLM/An of southern Sudan
occurred in 1988 and 1989, however were deserted when General Omar al–Bashir took power in the

Taking a Look at the Darfur Genocide
The Darfur genocide was the first genocide in the twentieth century and it is also the first genocide
to be declared genocide. Sadly the Darfur genocide still remains and millions of people are still
being affected as of today. Roughly around 400,000 innocent lives were lost. (Society in Darfur,
Chiff.com) In the year 2011 more than 500,000 Sudanese civilians were being driven out of their
homes by the government's harsh actions and decisions and this number is still rising. (It's in my
blood, stopgenocide.org.) Many of their homes and villages were burned to nothing bust ashes by
the Janjaweed. In the year 2008 the United Nations created a "hybrid" United Nation and African
Union mission known as UNAMID. They had planned to send over 26,000 troops to help defend the
citizens with force if necessary. But they only sent around 9,000 troops so far and they also lack the
proper equipment (Sudan Protest, guardianlv.com). The United Nations have stationed many refugee
camps. Many people run away from their village to get to the refugee camps and get the protection
they need. Many associations are making an honest effort to help send supplies to Sudan. So far
around 6.1 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance as of 2014. And the response by
the several of humanitarian groups has been amazing. They have raised 6 million dollars' worth of

One of the world's worst humanitarian crisis is currently unfolding in the Darfur region of the
Sudan. For the past 22 months, more than 70,000 Sudanese have been killed, and nearly 2 million
people have fled their homes to neighboring countries. This paper attempts to explore this present

have vast implications for the future of the country and the continent. Understanding the history of

Primarily the violence and turmoil is concentrated in the Darfur region of the Sudan. It is estimated
that 1,000 people are dying each day in the Sudan, and given the apathetic mindset of the world,
hundreds of thousands will continue to die if not helped.
The Sudan is home to two civil wars taking place dating back hundreds of years. "The older of the
two, pitting the Muslim revels from the south, has claimed 2m lives in the past two decades, and
spurred 4m people to abandon their homes."(Economist 11) Although the two sides in this old war
are close to a peace resolution, a new insurgence has begun in the region pitting "Arabs" against the
"black Africans", in an effort to attract peace concessions from the Sudanese government just as the
older rebels did years before. An uprising by rebel groups against government targets sparked this
new war because they felt neglected by the Sudanese government. But the response of the
government to the new revolt falls extremely short of peace concessions, and instead perpetuates an
environment of violence, torture and depression. The government has given its own militia, the
janjaweed, free reign to pillage, rape and kill black civilians in a futile attempt to squelch the revolt.
This can be see as an "ethnic cleansing" in which the government feels that the killings of blacks
will hopefully rid the country of the rebels given that the Darfur rebels are mostly black Africans.
Thus, the Sudanese

the genocide were black African tribes. The genocide in Darfur has claimed approximately 300,000

community took action, but many were dissatisfied with what seemed to be a lack of effort. Of the
groups taking action, those in the forefront were the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and

The war in Darfur materialized at the wrong time for the United States, Norway, and Britain, two of
which are permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. At the time, they were focused on
ensuring the success of the Naivasha negotiations in Sudan. The Naivasha agreement, also known as
the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was an permanent ceasefire agreement between the
Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/ Sudan People's Liberation
Army to end the Second Sudanese Civil War. This was long time coming because the conflict had

Race, Tribalism, and Genocide in the Sudan
Jpz777 03/11/2013 Order # 2087938 1.) How were "tribes" in the Sudan formed differently from the
way "races" were constructed in the United States? As is the case with the vast majority of nations
which were conquered and colonized by the British during their reign of global imperialism, the
Sudanese people of Africa experienced a rapid restructuring of its age old cultural identity system.
Located in the "Cradle of Civilization," a region straddling both the African continent and the Arab–
speaking Middle East, Sudan has long been home to a diverse population that is representative of its
many cultural influences, with Arab adherents of Islam living in relative stability alongside tribal
bands of native peoples. Upon being co–opted as a British colony in the early 20th century to fuel a
flailing textile industry, the fertile lands of Sudan were transformed into cotton plantations, thus
beginning the insidious process of subjugating the Sudanese people through division and
demarcation. The modern colonial scholar Mahmood Mamdani has observed that "British colonial
governance was about identity formation ... (because) the colonial political objective involved more
than just redefining the relationship between colonial power and subject; it involved reshaping the
very self–consciousness of the colonized, how they thought of themselves, their self–identity"
(Mamdani, 2009), and this concept of ensuring obedience through the removal and reshaping of
identity lies at the

For thousands of years, many cultural traditions have stood uninterrupted by one another. As culture
inevitably changed, societies remained respected. However, with the influence of globalization in
recent centuries, change has become intertwined with conflict. In many instances, a natural change
is not enough. When two societies collide, acculturation can occur, as members of the "weaker"
society acquire aspects of the dominant society. Despite acculturation's oppressive nature, dominant
cultures may seek the complete eradication of the other: genocide. An excerpt from The Convention

Before understanding how gravely women have been treated, we must first comprehend how the
ethnic crisis in Darfur occurred. Darfur is a region in Western Sudan, with a population of nearly six
million people. In 1896, the British staged a colonial invasion of Sudan, hoping to carry out their
discriminatory world views of European domination. According to Savo Heleta (2007, 4) "the
British administration heavily invested in the north, modernizing and liberalizing political and
economic institutions and improving social, educational, and health services...". With focus in the
North, the British created a Sudanese government that has never recuperated from colonial policy
and impact. Centered in Khotoum, the government was set up without regards for previous ethnic
differences that had been present in the country for centuries. The British followed through with a
"divide and rule" policy; a policy which established a division between Muslim– Arabs and African
Blacks. A few elite (namely, African Blacks who were converted to Christianity) were put into
power by the colonists, creating a great unequal distribution of privilege. Tensions continued to rise
between the Muslim–Arabs and African–Blacks, especially when the colonists left. In 1989, General
Omar Bashir overthrew Sudan by a military coup. The National Islamic Front government, now in
power, stirred deeper cultural conflict. Wanting total political control and to showcase

aspect of life since the beginning of time. To add to this struggle, some of the majority groups have
taken advantage of these situations and caused chaos for the minorities. This chaos has ranged from
simple discrimination to extreme measures of mass annihilation. Throughout history, genocide has
been a recurring problem in several countries around the world, due to war, economics, and
leadership. Despite the cause, world leaders have been ignoring these mass killings and onlooking
countries must work together to identify genocides as quickly as possible and bring them to an end.

Annan believes that genocide can be stopped by first preventing and identifying the cause of armed
conflict, then protecting the civilians in the armed conflicts if they progress, ending impunity,
providing early and clear warnings of a mass atrocity, and finally taking swift and decisive action
when all other efforts fail to prevent a genocide. The Secretary–General put it simply, stating "If we
are serious about preventing or stopping genocide in future, we must not be held back by legalistic
arguments about whether a particular atrocity meets the definition of genocide or not." It is in the
hands of the onlookers to do something about these unnecessary deaths and to prevent them from
happening again. After the Holocaust, it was agreed worldwide that such a tragedy will happen
"never again" so it is essential that this remains the basis for the fight against

Genocide and the Propaganda Media Essay
To many Americans, the feeling of being a bystander as countries slaughter their own people has
been in legal debate since 1933, it has gradually developed into a concept that can be applied in
many situations, both historical and contemporary. The meaning of the phrase genocide is the
cleansing of a race or ethnicity in a country. There has been evidence that this phrase can be used to
describe past and present day massacres being committed around the world and how media has
changed its perception on this issue overtime. "Propaganda tries to force a doctrine on the whole
people... Propaganda works on the general public from the standpoint of an idea and makes them
ripe for the victory of this idea." ( Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, 1926). ... Show more content on

Most people didn't know what was going on, and people didn't really know where Jews and gypsies
etc. were going, all they knew was that they were being removed. When word and photographs got
out into the public view about what happened in these camps, everyone is shocked to see so many
dead bodies. With the role of media, the international response to the war crimes in the Holocaust
was to establish an international tribunal and it was agreed to punish those responsible of crimes.
Throughout World War II, the American media published and broadcasted detailed accounts of what
was happening to the Jews in Europe. Articles published propagation of anti–Semitic laws in
German allied countries; death from disease and starvation of hundreds of thousands in ghettos and
labor camps; mass executions in Nazi–occupied Russia; and mass gassings. The articles also
indicated that these were not incidents, but part of a systematic campaign to kill all the Jews in
Europe The 1994 Rwandan genocide presented one of the most horrific crimes against humanity
since the Holocaust of World War II. In addition, it was also the first tragedy of its kind with the
opportunity to be represented in full by the media. Media played a different role here than in the
Holocaust, providing large coverage of the atrocities taking place "Remarkably, during a genocide

The Darfur Crisis Essay
Introduction The "Responsibility to Protect" (R2P) is a concept that has its roots in the philosophy
of "Human Security". Human Security can be defined as focusing on the individual human being as
the referent object of security as distinct from the nation–state. R2P and Human Security have
gathered impetus in the international community both in academic and policy spheres with a view to
these concepts being justifiers for humanitarian intervention.
Taking realism as the security argument that deals directly with state security, it is accepted that
nation states have valid concerns in protecting their borders and populations within from external

A Brief History of R2P in Policy
Before relating the R2P to the Darfur Crisis it is important to understand the fundamental tenants of
the R2P debate in relation to humanitarian intervention and the repercussions for state sovereignty.
The R2P concept can trace its modern origin to the address given by former UN Secretary General
Kofi Annan, to the General Assembly in 1999 putting forward the challenge of preventing another
Rwanda.
In response to this challenge the Canadian Government sponsored the foundation of the
International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS) in 2000 . Its report "The
Responsibility to Protect" was released the following year. The report outlines that the main
message of R2P is that sovereignty entails responsibility. Responsibility to protect its citizens from
genocide and other gross violations of human rights . Should any particular nation fail to uphold
these protections, then under the R2P concept responsibility devolves to the international
community .
This of course comes with a significant moral weight. The R2P report from the ICISS effectively
changed the conceptual thinking from "Humanitarian Intervention" to "Responsibility to Protect"
effectively

Lisa Parks discusses the use of satellite to represent conflicts throughout the world. With mass
media we now have access to the world in our hands Parks brings awareness to the importance
satellites imagery may have by allowing viewers to witness conflicts on a global scale. Parks further
explains this by stating "I set out to show that high– resolution satellite images, initially designed for
military intelligence purposes, could become useful to world citizens in their efforts to understand
the complexities of world conflicts and political violence, and in some cases, to contest the claims of
those in power and insist upon alternate interpretation" (245). Using satellites to show viewers

in retrospect it is a good idea to get knowledge of the destruction of places throughout history. I
wish it would have opened on my computer that way I could actually view the villages and the detail
that were provided on the villagers. Also when reading about Crisis in Darfur I like that they provide
testimonies from the survivors. The article also discussed Crisis in Darfur I loved how the discussed

incredible to see how much work they put into the project to educate people worldwide and it helps
people become aware that genocide happened in World War II and it also occurred throughout many
other different places like Cambodia, North Korea, India, and Rwandan. In the article there's a quote
from Sarah Blooms field stating that "when it comes to responding to genocides, the world's record

Life Lessons About The Holocaust
History provides a terrain of valuable moral lessons, while also helps us understand other people and
different societies. The Holocaust is an event where these lessons are very clear. The Holocaust is a
traumatic event in time where prejudice was in its rawest form. The Holocaust wasn't a mere
accident in history, it occurred because governments encouraged it and individuals allowed it. They
permitted not only discrimination, but prejudice, hatred and the mass murder of people to occur. In
addition, teaching history to students prepares them for the real world and situations. The Holocaust
should be taught to eighth grade students because it provides crucial life lessons, exposure to topics

It would be pretending that this flaw of society and abuse of power never happened. We should look
back at our history in order to improve upon the present and future, so that history doesn't repeat
itself. This includes teaching the younger generation. If you keep sheltering them, they'll feel like
their society has no flaws. They will grow up believing something like this never happened, so will
be doomed to repeat the events of the Holocaust and other genocides. If you don't look back at the
past, then how will you remember those who were victimized during the Holocaust? A famous quote

Extermination in Genocide
All genocides that have occurred in human history include various stages that are usually present;
however, extermination, the 7th stage of genocide, is one that is present in all genocides. From the
Armenian genocide and Darfur genocide, to the Rwandan and Jewish genocides, extermination is
ever present in all of these.
Extermination is explained to be mass killings of people, which defines the legal term "genocide",
and is caused when the killers do not consider their victims to be fully human (Stanton, 8 Stages).
Regardless of the genocide that you research, all present extermination in one way or another. One

Among the dead were children and pregnant women. Rape in villages by government officers and
local police was, like in the case of the Darfur genocide, an often occurrence. Victims were disposed
of and often their identifiable information, were burned (Spalding 29–33). The torture, mutilation,
and disturbing murders of neighbors by average citizens, in addition to the governmental militia acts
of ethnic cleansing show extermination throughout the course of the Rwandan genocide.
Lastly, one of the most horrific acts of extermination that occurred in any genocide was that of the
Holocaust. After Hitler gained power and began to secretly isolate, transport, and force Jews (among
other minorities) into concentration camps during World War II, the worst extermination acts were
committed. A prime example is the "target practice" and burning of babies at these camps, with no
exception on average men and women (Wiesel 32–33). In addition, people were hung, and
thousands of prisoners were forced to watch. This disgusting act of near inhuman hatred made this
extermination horrendous. The worst, as Elie Wiesel witnessed in a camp, was the hanging of a little
boy, who was too light to properly hang, and stayed alive for half an hour, slowly dying (Wiesel 65).
Other things that these people were forced to endure were the miles upon miles of marching through
immensely cold snow

The local farmers formed two rebel groups known as the Justice and Equality Movement, and the

The Sudanese government has been accused of working with the Janjaweed to fight against the two

March 23rd, 2013 The Darfur Conflict The government of Sudan, a country in Northeast Africa, is

From 1972 onwards, the government "usually ran Darfur through officials brought in from other
parts of Sudan, mainly from Khartoum" (Darfur: Origins). What Britain did basically doomed Non–
Arab Darfur to "a future as an underdeveloped colony of Sudan's Arab–speaking Nile Valley
heartland" (Darfur: Origins). Furthermore, another source of the problem began with the gradual
change of the climate in Darfur. Desertification, a process by which land becomes increasingly dry
until almost no vegetation grows on it, becomes a major problem for the Darfur people. Land for
farming becomes scarce. Living on desert is unsuitable for humans for obvious reasons: lack of food
and, more importantly, lack of water. There is not much suitable farm land, therefore "the lack of
fertile land caused the populations to compete with one another for land on which they could
survive" (Xavier 18). Before desertification became a huge problem for the Sudanese people, they
lived in peace. Honestly, "the hostility between Darfur's Arabs and Africans are relatively new"
(Xavier 20). This shows how the competition for survival helped fuel the terrible genocide in Darfur.
In addition, political aspects have played a role in the roots of the Darfur conflict. The leader,
General Omar Hassan Ahmad al– Bashir (who came to power in 1989), is a major source of the
problem. Al–

Darfur is located in the western region of Sudan, adjacent to Chad and Central Africa. In early 2004,
the Sudanese government and state sponsored militia carried out the Darfur genocide. The targets of
the genocide were black African tribes. The genocide in Darfur has claimed approximately 300,000

Genocide is one of the worst crimes against humanity and it still continues today. The definition of
the word genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular
ethnic group or nation. Compared with war crimes and crimes against humanity, genocide is
generally regarded as the most offensive crime. Unlike war, where the attack is general and the
object is often the control of a geographical or political region. Genocide attacks go after an
individual's identity and the object is control, or complete elimination, of a group of people. The

Defining Genocide: Jack Nusan Porter
Jack Nusan Porter, an Ukrainian American sociologist defined the term genocide as follows:
"Genocide is the deliberate destruction, in whole or in part, by a government or its agents, of a
racial, sexual, religious, tribal or political minority. It can involve not only mass murder, but also
starvation, forced deportation, and political, economic and biological subjugation. Genocide
involves three major components: ideology, technology, and bureaucracy/organization." I chose to
use this definition instead of the definition given by the 'Convention on the Prevention and
Punishment of the Crime of Genocide' because I think this one is incomplete, as it does not include
political minorities. It is true that a genocide may not be carried out by a government or its agents,
but I also believe that if not by these two groups of people, it must have their help and consent or
otherwise it would not happen. The aim of this essay will be to convey and contrast the two
genocide cases in Rwanda and Darfur from a US Foreign Policy perspective, to see what has been
done in order to help these two regions and what else should have been done by not only a country
that is one of the biggest if not the biggest power from the last century, but also a country that thinks
of itself as exceptional, that feels it has the moral obligation and duty of sharing and spreading
democracy in the name of human rights. Foreign policies such as 'Exceptionalism' and 'Isolationism'

Genocide Throughout The World
Steven Pinker implied that, "As long as your ideology identifies the main source of the world's ills
as a definable group, it opens the world up to the mass murder of people" (1). Steven Pinker
revealed an interesting side to the controversial topic of mass murders and the causes of them. He
revealed that as long as people in this world believe that they are better than other due to their race,
religion, and everything else that defines a group of people as different from another group of
people. People are and have been wrongfully treated differently due to the incompetence of some to
realize that everyone is equal. They often believe that they were superior to others because of their
physical attributes and beliefs that they had. The Holocaust is a major example of the ignorance of
some in history. This ignorance often resulted in the murders and mistreatment of many. Elie Wiesel
was one of the six million plus people who were wrongfully mistreated during the Holocaust. Many
believe that this sort of event could not occur in the current time period because people have become
more civilized and tolerable to the differences of others, but sadly the world is not ready to contain a
social utopia. The mass murder, and violence that is occurring in Darfur is one of the many things
that shows that the world is far from achieving this social utopia. Throughout history, many

Adolf Hitler, and his Nazi Party that followed him, began persecuting Jews in 1933. Adolf Hitler,
the mastermind behind the Holocaust, was an anti–semitic man who believed in a superior Arian
German race. Hitler's rise to power was just the beginning of a series of events that almost led to the
complete annihilation of many countries' Jewish population. First, laws that limited the Jew's rights
were applied. Next, their valuables were taken from their possession, and then the innocent people
were forced into cramped ghettos lined with barbwire. According to Sally Marks, "the term
holocaust is derived from the Greek language and literally means 'a sacrifice totally consumed by
fire'." (1) Living up to its definition, during the Holocaust many Jews were burned in the fiery
mouths of the crematoriums. The impact of the segregational laws as well as being forced into
ghettos were only the beginning of the inhumane crimes the Jews were subjected to during the
Holocaust. Concentration camps were horrible places filled with starvation, dangerous work, and
death. After being taken out of the ghettos Jews were most often carted like caged animals to the
camps. There, if not immediately sentenced to death during selection, the people were stripped of
their identity and thrown into a situation no human deserves to be in. Many Jews either lost their
faith or used it as a tool for survival. Many asked themselves, is there a god, or is this a test of faith?

The ongoing genocide in Darfur is in desperate need of help. As the first genocide of the 20th
century it impacts us directly. The men, women and children of Darfur are being exposed to death,
rape and even water contamination. The Janjaweed is the root of the destruction in Darfur has
motivated economic power, political power and a plain simple rivalry over the non– Muslim and the
non–Arab. The Janjaweed translates to devils on horseback they got there name for a reason they
ride around horseback armed with assault rifles and intentions of destruction. Darfur is located in
Sudan's western top corner and it has 9.241 million people living there which ... Show more content

We have watched 45 genocides take place and 70 million people die over the course of these
genocides and have not done much to end it. Genocides continue because, there goverment again is
not keeping the "laws" in place enough. So if nothing is done sooner rather than later, more attacks
like the chemical attack and the holocaust and the Darfur genocide will keep happening but worse
over the years because, we are evolving in our technology and our weapons. Now what can we do to
fix it all together? That is the ongoing question but it does need fast action before millions

Compare and Contrast Between Rwanda and Darfur Genocide,...
The analysis of the genocides that took place both in Rwanda and Sudan's Darfur region exhibit
some similarities as well as differences. The character of violence was similar in both cases, but in
Rwanda the violence was more intense, participatory, and extraordinary. The violence in these two
places took place in an environment that had experienced civil wars. It was a period of political
transition which was further aggravated by ethnic nationalism and a conflict of ethnic populations
that were living in close proximity. However, in the Rwandan genocide, the state is more
centralized, compact, and effective. This is what explains the intensity and variation. The
international response to these genocides through observers emphasized on ... Show more content on

In Rwanda, the IC was not concerned with stopping the genocide just like in Darfur. This makes the
two cases similar. These comparative claims are accurate although the claims need some close
scrutiny. For instance, the comparisons do not provide the degree of similarity and differences in the
two instances. Form the international perspective, we are not able to tell in what way the response in
Rwanda is different or similar to what took place in Darfur (Straus).
Why the US and the UN what are the similarities and differences of how they acted in each
situation.
The UN and the US government are accredited for deploring conflict situations as well as
contributing humanitarian aid, and this is what these two organizations did in Rwanda and Darfur.
However, the UN did not do anything to punish or prevent the genocides that took place in these two
countries. The US government promised to support the peace talk's agreement in Darfur and hold
the perpetrators accountable for their acts. It never kept that promise since nothing has been done.
So far, the UN's Security Council has also failed in its peace keeping mission effeorts, and is instead
pressuring Sudan with words only. No solid steps have been made to bring the wrong doers into
justice (Shapiro).
In Rwanda, in 1994, the United Nations ignored the call to act fast, and only stepped up after
hundred days, after close to 800,000 people had lost their lives.

The Janjaweed: The Darfur Genocide
Ever since 2003 there's been a mass torturing of Darfur civilians. This is known as the Darfur
genocide. It is still going on today. It's been going on for over 13 years. Many times the Darfur
Genocide has been called the first genocide of the 21st century. Many people i've been seeing
question if it's truly genocide. I have to say that I think it's no doubt genocide. I say this because
genocide is the deliberate extermination of a people or nation. To say the least it's very deliberate
what the Janjaweed has been doing to the Darfur citizens. It's terrible the many gruesome acts the
Janjaweed has been doing in Darfur. The Janjaweed has been murdering people in Darfur. The
Janjaweed has been also raping young women in their own villages. These ... Show more content on

Can you honestly say this whole situation in Darfur isn't genocide. The definition of genocide is the
deliberate extermination of a people or nation. If you ask me this situation is clearly genocide. After
all the Sudanese government is purposely torturing these people in Darfur. This is a truly a sad and
terrible event for them that's been going on for over 13 years. They have been torturing these
citizens by killing them, raping them, polluting their water system, and much more. These are truly
awful acts the Janjaweed is committing. It's definitely one of the worst genocides in history. After all
i've said if you before reading this thought it wasn't a genocide do you still think

The Term Situation In Darfur Genocide
The term "genocide" did not exist before 1944. It is a very specific term, referring to violent crimes
committed against groups with the intent to destroy the existence of the group (United States
Holocaust Memorial Museum). In 1944, a Polish–Jewish lawyer named Raphael Lemkin (1900–
1959) sought to describe Nazi policies of systematic murder, including the destruction of the
European Jews. He formed the word "genocide" by combining geno–, from the Greek word for race
or tribe, with –cide, derived from the Latin word for killing (United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum). Genocide is killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to
members of the group. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated ... Show

It is home to about 6 million people from nearly 100 tribes, some nomads, some farmers, and all
Muslims. In 2003, two Darfuri rebel movements– the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice
and Equality Movement (JEM) – took up arms against the Sudanese government, complaining about
the marginalization of the area and the failure to protect sedentary people from attacks by nomads.
The genocide in Darfur has claimed 400,000 lives and displaced over 2,500,000 people. More than
one hundred people continue to die each day; five thousand die every month. The Sudanese
government disputes these estimates and denies any connection with the Janjaweed ("United Human
Rights Council"). The Janjaweed systematically destroys Darfurians by burning villages, looting
economic resources, polluting water sources, and murdering, raping, and torturing civilians. Sudan
is the largest country in Africa. Located in Northeastern Africa, it borders the Red Sea and falls
between Egypt, Chad, Uganda, as well as six other countries. In the ongoing genocide, African
farmers and others in Darfur are being systematically displaced and murdered at the hands of the
Janjaweed. In Twain's, "The Damned Human Race," he explains why he believes humans are lower
than any animal. In his theory, humans have degenerated instead of evolving into something better
due to our moral senses. The cause and the effects are both psychological and physical. There are

Essay On U.S. Involvement In Darfur

  • 1. Essay on U.S. Involvement in Darfur "History repeats itself", is a commonly used phrase and it is one that can be found to hold true in many situations. Throughout history there have been many incidents in which mass murder has occurred. A modern day example of mass murder in a conflict that is ongoing is the genocides occurring in Darfur, Sudan. The corrupt government in the country supports a group called the Janjaweed, which is the militia group that is mainly responsible for the large number of Darfur residents that have been murdered, raped, or displaced (1). Although the exact number is not known, most sources estimate around 400,000 people have died and another 2,500,000 have been displaced (1). The conflict started in 2003 and although it is not as severe as it has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many valid reasons that support the United States becoming involved in the conflict going on in Darfur. One reason that the presence of the United Stated is necessary is because if the Darfur conflict is not contained sooner than later it has the potential to become escalated. The longer the United States does nothing to stop the genocide in Darfur the more power the militia group will gain which will not only lead to more death but could create a power that will be harder to control in the future. Recently oil has been discovered in Sudan. This provides the United States with economic interest in the conflict occurring in Darfur. If the Untied States was able to support an end to this crisis and leave a favorable impression on the nation, then they in turn may be willing to aid us helping the United States with oil. In the past the United States has made many empty promises saying that we are going to be active in helping control the conflict that was occurring in Sudan. By sending in help the United States can regain credibility that they will follow through with their word. There are many people who are upset with the way that the United States has chosen to handle this situation. They have promised to send aid and resources but have followed with little efforts. The United States could gain respect from those around them and have a major role in a country with growing interest. If the United ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Gladwell and Gopnik With America's history of people fighting for their rights, we have become accustomed to the idea that activism needs to be extreme; to cause riots, have aggression, and for people to be put in jail to make a point. We have created an image that there needs to be a fierce willingness to fight, in order for activism to be effective. As Malcolm Gladwell describes in "Why the Revolution Should not be Tweeted", he reminds us of what 'real' activism is and how other generations have risked their lives to make a difference, in both their lives and the future of America. He does not think that activists can be considered true activists if they are non–violent when protesting for their rights. However, Gladwell should consider that protesting ... In order for activism to be strong, it needs more than one person and one idea. The more people or acquaintance's that are reached, the stronger the support system is. In order to have an even stronger system we need our supporters to understand and believe in the action that is being protested. Social media is capable with not only getting in contact with other people but it allows you to grab those people's attentions in many different ways. These followers need to be convinced and taught about the different options that they can be given. Many people follow trends, and with social media being a big part of the trend it makes it easier to have an audience. It is easy for people to invite people to a group, or event on Facebook or even having a following of tweeters on Twitter because people are able to add descriptions. In this descriptions majority of people who are protesting are able to write who they are, what the problem is, give ideas of solutions to the problem and overall a way to convince their readers to press 'Like', 're–tweet', 'Follow' or 'Attend'. With their explanation they can create a bandwagon of supporters and build a strong willed support system. Gladwell used the example of the Bhatia needing a bone–marrow transplant. • 5. Conflict In Sudan Research Paper In conclusion, Sudan should use is power of Africa's largest country to create peaceful movements and to provide multiculturalism. The principal cause of those conflicts are about money and power. If they tough more about the way of living, they would have a better lifestyle. Also, they don't have any social system to help them. Giving money and donation will not resolve genocides. Those people need to stand up and we have to help these civilizations with the strength of our words. Finally, the power of globalization could change everything. With social networks that we have today, it's impossible to think that some country still have that kind of important country. The 115–page agreement included agreements on national and state power–sharing, demilitarization of the Janjaweed and other militias, an integration of SLM/A and JEM troops into the Sudanese Armed Forces and police, a system of federal wealth–sharing for the promotion of Darfurian economic interests, a referendum on the future status of Darfur and measures to promote the flow of humanitarian aid. • 7. Genocide: A Historical Perspective Essay According to Dictionary.com Genocide is the "deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group." A few notable examples of genocide would be the War in Darfur, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Holocaust which are all among some of the worst genocides of the 20th century. The situation in Darfur is in part still going on today, while the Holocaust and Rwandan genocide are now a serious part of our world's history. Each of these three genocides occurred due to political powers spinning out of control, and resulting in mass killings of those that the leaders did not favor. Although it seems that genocide is a part of history and it is put in the back of everyone's minds, genocide does still exist today ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Janjaweed patrol the camps and men are killed and women are raped if they wander off in search of firewood or other needed supplies ("Q&A...") Many activists refer to the crisis in Darfur as genocide, including the Save Darfur Coalition and the Genocide Intervention Network, though some argue that there is a lack of evidence in pointing to genocide. However the topic could no longer be debated when on 14 July 2008, prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC), filed ten charges of war crimes against Sudan's President Omar al–Bashir, three counts of genocide, five of crimes against humanity and two of murder. The ICC's prosecutors have claimed that al–Bashir "masterminded and implemented a plan to destroy in substantial part" three tribal groups in Darfur because of their ethnicity. It has been seven years since the genocide in Darfur began; over 2.7 million people have been displaced, or killed due to the genocide that takes place in Darfur ("Q&A..."). In 1994 between the months of April and June approximately 800,000 Tutsis were killed in Rwanda. That is a systematic killing brought out majorly by the Hutus. The genocide was started when the death of the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu occurred. The president's plane was shot down above Kigali airport on 6 April 1994. The Hutus pointed their fingers to the Tutsis and deemed them responsible for this attack, though it is believed by the Tutsis that it was a Hutu extremist. After ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Rwanda Genocide Persuasive Essay "In Rwanda, one person's God is another person's Satan". This quote perfectly describes the main reason genocide is ever committed, that being one group thinks it is a beneficial thing to their country/community and one that absolutely despises that their friends, neighbors, and family are being slaughtered en masse. Rwandan genocide was a mass killing of the Tutsi population in the 1990's, and it ranks seventh in terms of number of people killed in mass murders and/or genocides. Of course the first is the Holocaust, where Adolf Hitler systematically killed six million members of the Jewish faith. The common theme of both the Rwandan genocide and the Holocaust is that many people of the same faith or race died. Thus defines the term 'genocide'. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The global powers failed to step in quickly and took so long that a mister Eric Reeves had time to write an article called The World's Abandonment of Darfur in which he writes "The United States, Britain and France need to muscle up politically in the Security Council now or the fate of Darfur will be dictated by the very men who began the genocide 12 years ago. This would be unprecedented in the grim history of genocide" (Reeves). Clearly, the global superpowers need to step up their game in the international community to help stop things like this from happening in the future. If these countries could not even prevent the same tragic events from happening back to back, that is terrible. Granted, the restructuring of a state can be a long and difficult project to undertake, just look at the Middle East and the United States' involvement, but it is necessary to make sure that the same people, or any people at all, are incriminated and tortured like those living in the Darfur region were. The global heavyweights, at least, need to intervene in any restructuring post–genocide to ensure that the county does not fall back into a state in which mass killings are taking ... • 11. Genocide in Darfur Essay The Holocaust of Today: Genocide in Darfur By definition, genocide is "the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group." According to Eric Reeves, writer for the Sudan Tribune, genocide "encompasses not only the killing of members of a national, ethical, racial, or religious group, as such, but also deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or part." Whatever genocide may be defined as, it is the most grotesque form of massacre known to man. More than two and a half million people have been displaced as villages are raided and burned to the ground. The defenseless villagers, if caught, are slaughtered mercilessly. If they are fortunate, they might run fast enough to escape the Janjawid soldiers. The refugees seek sanctuary in expatriate camps in Chad and others hide within the Darfur region among the fallen trees and in make–shift shelters. In the camps alone, two hundred and fifty thousand survive on less and less as resources are depleted. Even in the camps, the people are not free from the fear that haunts them. Many of the camps have come under rebel attack and thousands have died as a result. Unfortunately, no one is out of harm's way. Any non–Arab is subject to Janjawid attack with little or no chance to flee. Regrettably, the Janjawid does not target males selectively. The number of women and girls that have been abducted, raped, and tortured is unknown. Eighty percent of the people in Chad refugee camps are these women. Currently, the people of Darfur have been continually attacked by the Sudanese army and by proxy–militia controlled by the Sudanese government. Innocent civilians in Darfur continue to be victims of unthinkable brutality. Many people have become homeless and seek protection in refugee camps in Chad. Furthermore, the region of Darfur is about the size of Texas. Its enormity is one of the sources of the current conflict because most of Darfur is not easily accessible. Traveling in and out of the secluded areas is very tough. There are an unfortunately small amount of all–weather roads. The attackers can travel the terrain much more easily, making it even more difficult for the villagers. The isolated areas make it hard for journalists and humanitarian workers to learn about the activity in the region. This makes it also not easy to gauge the actual number of people affected by the desolation of famine and warfare. In addition, Darfur's terrain can be classified into four individual sections: mountains, basement rock, watercourses, and sand. In Darfur a large amount of the arable land consists of goz (soil sediment where vegetation grows). Goz can be useful for farming but primarily offers land for grazing herds. Then, through a process the land around the watercourses and the goz makes the land fertile. Each year the land becomes less arable. Also desertification (process that includes arable land decreasing and the desert area increasing), deforestation, the drought and over use of the land have fueled the conflict between various tribal groups. This has caused most of Darfur's population to become dependent on the southern region. The lack of fertile land is causing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Darfur Crisis Essay In March 2004, the world was taken aback when Mukesh Kapila, a United Nations (UN) Human Rights Coordinator for Sudan, announced during an interview with the UN that the "world's greatest humanitarian crisis" was occurring in Darfur. Until then, the world had been concerned by the raging civil war in South Sudan and the peace talks associated with it. Darfur was a nowhere, unknown and uncared about for centuries. Suddenly newspapers were wild with reports of the 21st Century's first genocide, and support was being drummed up from all corners of the world. But then the Asian tsunami on 26 December 2004 occurred and what is known as "world opinion" moved on to bigger disasters. Yet the crisis in Darfur continued; however, now organizations such as the UN, European Union (EU), and African Union (AU) began to take interest, develop aid packages, and planned for intervention. The British implemented a governance system of "Indirect Rule," one in which changes were introduced "gently," and power was exercised through local traditional authorities who would "respect native culture." Although the definition is often scrutinized, according to Merriam Webster, "Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political or cultural group". The most notable event associated with the term is the Holocaust. It was always well known that the Rwandan population is very one–sided. The majority of the people living there are Sunni Muslims or "Hutus" whereas the minority consists of Shia Muslims, or "Tutsi". According to Sarah Hymowitz and Amelia Parker, Tutsi are said to be of higher class because they are more white, and the Hutus are common people of middle class. Although the distrust and hatred between the two groups of people was always slightly present, nobody had any clue about what would be the outcome. Following the establishment of the Hutu led government in 1961, the oppression of the Tutsi followed not far behind. Although many Tutsi fled in fear of imprisonment into neighboring Uganda, those of the Tutsi who were still in Rwanda (probably due to family or marriage ties) were seen as lesser beings by the new Hutu Government. At the time, and for two decades it seemed like the situation was under control. When the Rwandan Patiotic front (RPF) was formed in 1985, tensions escalated. The RPF was a group of Tutsi exiles who demanded that they be granted the right to return to their homeland and end the long period of discrimination against the Tutsi. Sadly the Darfur genocide still remains and millions of people are still being affected as of today. Roughly around 400,000 innocent lives were lost. (Society in Darfur, Chiff.com) In the year 2011 more than 500,000 Sudanese civilians were being driven out of their homes by the government's harsh actions and decisions and this number is still rising. (It's in my blood, stopgenocide.org.) Many of their homes and villages were burned to nothing bust ashes by the Janjaweed. In the year 2008 the United Nations created a "hybrid" United Nation and African Union mission known as UNAMID. They had planned to send over 26,000 troops to help defend the citizens with force if necessary. But they only sent around 9,000 troops so far and they also lack the proper equipment (Sudan Protest, guardianlv.com). The United Nations have stationed many refugee camps. Many people run away from their village to get to the refugee camps and get the protection they need. Many associations are making an honest effort to help send supplies to Sudan. So far around 6.1 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance as of 2014. And the response by the several of humanitarian groups has been amazing. "The older of the two, pitting the Muslim revels from the south, has claimed 2m lives in the past two decades, and spurred 4m people to abandon their homes."(Economist 11) Although the two sides in this old war are close to a peace resolution, a new insurgence has begun in the region pitting "Arabs" against the "black Africans", in an effort to attract peace concessions from the Sudanese government just as the older rebels did years before. An uprising by rebel groups against government targets sparked this new war because they felt neglected by the Sudanese government. But the response of the government to the new revolt falls extremely short of peace concessions, and instead perpetuates an environment of violence, torture and depression. The government has given its own militia, the janjaweed, free reign to pillage, rape and kill black civilians in a futile attempt to squelch the revolt. As is the case with the vast majority of nations which were conquered and colonized by the British during their reign of global imperialism, the Sudanese people of Africa experienced a rapid restructuring of its age old cultural identity system. Located in the "Cradle of Civilization," a region straddling both the African continent and the Arab– speaking Middle East, Sudan has long been home to a diverse population that is representative of its many cultural influences, with Arab adherents of Islam living in relative stability alongside tribal bands of native peoples. Upon being co–opted as a British colony in the early 20th century to fuel a flailing textile industry, the fertile lands of Sudan were transformed into cotton plantations, thus beginning the insidious process of subjugating the Sudanese people through division and demarcation. The modern colonial scholar Mahmood Mamdani has observed that "British colonial governance was about identity formation ... (because) the colonial political objective involved more than just redefining the relationship between colonial power and subject; it involved reshaping the very self–consciousness of the colonized, how they thought of themselves, their self–identity" (Mamdani, 2009), and this concept of ensuring obedience through the removal and reshaping of identity lies at the ... According to Savo Heleta (2007, 4) "the British administration heavily invested in the north, modernizing and liberalizing political and economic institutions and improving social, educational, and health services...". With focus in the North, the British created a Sudanese government that has never recuperated from colonial policy and impact. In response to this challenge the Canadian Government sponsored the foundation of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS) in 2000 . Its report "The Responsibility to Protect" was released the following year. The report outlines that the main message of R2P is that sovereignty entails responsibility. Responsibility to protect its citizens from genocide and other gross violations of human rights . Should any particular nation fail to uphold these protections, then under the R2P concept responsibility devolves to the international community . Extermination in Genocide Bryan Ramirez Mrs. Burton English 10 Honors 25 March 2012 Extermination in Genocide All genocides that have occurred in human history include various stages that are usually present; however, extermination, the 7th stage of genocide, is one that is present in all genocides. From the Armenian genocide and Darfur genocide, to the Rwandan and Jewish genocides, extermination is ever present in all of these. Extermination is explained to be mass killings of people, which defines the legal term "genocide", and is caused when the killers do not consider their victims to be fully human (Stanton, 8 Stages). Regardless of the genocide that you research, all present extermination in one way or another. One perfect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Among the dead were children and pregnant women. Rape in villages by government officers and local police was, like in the case of the Darfur genocide, an often occurrence. Victims were disposed of and often their identifiable information, were burned (Spalding 29–33). The torture, mutilation, and disturbing murders of neighbors by average citizens, in addition to the governmental militia acts of ethnic cleansing show extermination throughout the course of the Rwandan genocide. Lastly, one of the most horrific acts of extermination that occurred in any genocide was that of the Holocaust. After Hitler gained power and began to secretly isolate, transport, and force Jews (among other minorities) into concentration camps during World War II, the worst extermination acts were committed. A prime example is the "target practice" and burning of babies at these camps, with no exception on average men and women (Wiesel 32–33). In addition, people were hung, and thousands of prisoners were forced to watch. This disgusting act of near inhuman hatred made this extermination horrendous. The worst, as Elie Wiesel witnessed in a camp, was the hanging of a little boy, who was too light to properly hang, and stayed alive for half an hour, slowly dying (Wiesel 65). Other things that these people were forced to endure were the miles upon miles of marching through immensely cold snow

Genocide in Darfur Essay There are many worldwide conflicts that occurred throughout history that made a negative impact on the world, but there's one of these conflicts that stood out from the rest, and still remains present in today's society. This conflict is called a genocide; the deliberate and systematic extermination of a nation, racial, political or cultural group ( United States ). According to the united sates holocaust memorial museum the term genocide didn't really come about until 1944. A Jewish– Polish lawyer coined the name genocide in 1944. He did so surfing the reign of Nazis to describe the constant murder. The local farmers formed two rebel groups known as the Justice and Equality Movement, and the Sudan Liberation Army. These two rebel armies were formed because, according to Makki Sala , the government in Khartoum was accused of favoring the Arabs and carrying out a systematic ethnic cleansing in Darfur . But these two rebel groups are not the only groups who are causing problems in Darfur; a group of bandits who rape, kill and steal are known as the Janjaweed this group is claimed as the main cause of the countless massacres that are occurring in the villages of Darfur . The Sudanese government has been accused of working with the Janjaweed to fight against the two rebel army groups. This is very unfortunate to hear because the government should never be involve with a group who massacre innocent people, the government should protect its people not exterminate them because they don't agree with their policies. Although the horrific events of the holocaust occurred many years ago the after shock of it still remain in today's society; ethnic groups are attacked, discriminated against, even exterminated in some cases, so the united states needs to step in like they did " in December 1941, the United states entered world war II on the side of the allied forces"(United states). • 52. Darfur Conflict Essay March 23rd, 2013 The Darfur Conflict The government of Sudan, a country in Northeast Africa, is committing a horrendous crime against humanity. Genocide is raging on in Western Sudan against poor, helpless, innocent people. It is actually the ten year "anniversary" since the beginning of the Darfur conflict and the genocide still continues on. There are over 1.4 million people who still do not have homes to come back to, and the numbers stack higher every day. Bombings have not stopped, as there was one as recent as February 2013. The Darfur conflict in the beginning was just a brewing disaster and it eventually led to the horrendous genocides in the early 2000s due to early settlement disputes, climate change, and radical Islamic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From 1972 onwards, the government "usually ran Darfur through officials brought in from other parts of Sudan, mainly from Khartoum" (Darfur: Origins). What Britain did basically doomed Non– Arab Darfur to "a future as an underdeveloped colony of Sudan's Arab–speaking Nile Valley heartland" (Darfur: Origins). Furthermore, another source of the problem began with the gradual change of the climate in Darfur. Desertification, a process by which land becomes increasingly dry until almost no vegetation grows on it, becomes a major problem for the Darfur people. Land for farming becomes scarce. Living on desert is unsuitable for humans for obvious reasons: lack of food and, more importantly, lack of water. There is not much suitable farm land, therefore "the lack of fertile land caused the populations to compete with one another for land on which they could survive" (Xavier 18). Before desertification became a huge problem for the Sudanese people, they lived in peace. Honestly, "the hostility between Darfur's Arabs and Africans are relatively new" (Xavier 20). This shows how the competition for survival helped fuel the terrible genocide in Darfur. In addition, political aspects have played a role in the roots of the Darfur conflict. The leader, General Omar Hassan Ahmad al– Bashir (who came to power in 1989), is a major source of the problem. Al– ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. Defining Genocide: Jack Nusan Porter Jack Nusan Porter, an Ukrainian American sociologist defined the term genocide as follows: "Genocide is the deliberate destruction, in whole or in part, by a government or its agents, of a racial, sexual, religious, tribal or political minority. It can involve not only mass murder, but also starvation, forced deportation, and political, economic and biological subjugation. Genocide involves three major components: ideology, technology, and bureaucracy/organization." I chose to use this definition instead of the definition given by the 'Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide' because I think this one is incomplete, as it does not include political minorities. It is true that a genocide may not be carried out by a government or its agents, but I also believe that if not by these two groups of people, it must have their help and consent or otherwise it would not happen. The aim of this essay will be to convey and contrast the two genocide cases in Rwanda and Darfur from a US Foreign Policy perspective, to see what has been done in order to help these two regions and what else should have been done by not only a country that is one of the biggest if not the biggest power from the last century, but also a country that thinks of itself as exceptional, that feels it has the moral obligation and duty of sharing and spreading democracy in the name of human rights. Genocide Throughout The World Steven Pinker implied that, "As long as your ideology identifies the main source of the world's ills as a definable group, it opens the world up to the mass murder of people" (1). Steven Pinker revealed an interesting side to the controversial topic of mass murders and the causes of them. He revealed that as long as people in this world believe that they are better than other due to their race, religion, and everything else that defines a group of people as different from another group of people. People are and have been wrongfully treated differently due to the incompetence of some to realize that everyone is equal. They often believe that they were superior to others because of their physical attributes and beliefs that they had. The Holocaust is a major example of the ignorance of some in history. This ignorance often resulted in the murders and mistreatment of many. Elie Wiesel was one of the six million plus people who were wrongfully mistreated during the Holocaust. Many believe that this sort of event could not occur in the current time period because people have become more civilized and tolerable to the differences of others, but sadly the world is not ready to contain a social utopia. The mass murder, and violence that is occurring in Darfur is one of the many things that shows that the world is far from achieving this social utopia. First, laws that limited the Jew's rights were applied. Next, their valuables were taken from their possession, and then the innocent people were forced into cramped ghettos lined with barbwire. According to Sally Marks, "the term holocaust is derived from the Greek language and literally means 'a sacrifice totally consumed by fire'." The impact of the segregational laws as well as being forced into ghettos were only the beginning of the inhumane crimes the Jews were subjected to during the Holocaust. Concentration camps were horrible places filled with starvation, dangerous work, and death. After being taken out of the ghettos Jews were most often carted like caged animals to the camps.
