information and materials. Journalists receive a tremendous amount of information daily from

"Some fake news providers seek to advance candidates they favor. The Romanian man who ran
endingthefed.com, for example, claims that he started the site mainly to help Donald Trump's
campaign" (Allcott). This misinformation had greater effects post–election; claims began to spread
about Russian hackers supposedly having involvement in the election. A simple lie on a news article
can have disastrous repercussions. People need to be extra mindful when it comes to obtaining
information from the news and media.
One of the primary factors for the rise in fake news is the ease of access to information. In a study
done by the Knight Foundation their data reports, "Two–thirds of Facebook users access news on the
social platform, and with 67 percent of U.S. adults active on Facebook, that translates to 44 percent
of the overall U.S. population which accesses news on the social platform" (Gottfried). The news is
heavily implemented on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Social media provides an
outlet for news agencies to curate and target their content towards readers on a personal basis.
Technologies like browser cookies and user tracking give news agencies a way to profile their
readers and provide content that can easily be misinforming. It has become very easy for anyone to

Is Journalism An Integral Aspect For The Human Race?
Journalism has become an integral aspect for the human race in the last 100 years. It has allowed the
average citizen to be more informed with their community and have a better means to influence their
government. As time progressed, it only made sense that a more refined development of news
coverage was developed. Unfortunately, in order to be prosperous, a news organization needs to
have views and may try to sensationalize a story. This may lead to false assumptions and disorder
and such acts are immoral for a Journalist.
For the purpose of this paper "sensationalism" can be defined as, "Subject matter, language, or style
producing or designed to produce startling or thrilling impressions or to excite and please vulgar
taste" (Dictionary.com). This event has effected all facets of civilized culture, but why are humans
so susceptible to sensationalism? Do we find joy in finding something wrong with the world? Do we
need to find something wrong with situations, even if we have to exaggerate them until we can
assume something will go wrong? In most cases people will not be so easily riled up, but as a
business, news companies have fine–tuned the psychology of their viewers in order to drive them to
want to watch more. But why are news agencies so intent on getting views in this matter? What is
the responsibility of the viewer? What are the negative effects of sensationalism? To better discern

social media came out circa 20 years ago. The name of it was Six Degrees and it was created by
Andrew Weinreich in the 1900's. Six degrees users had the capabilities of uploading a profile,
making friends, and sending messages with family and friends. Nevertheless on 2004, Facebook was
created by Mark Zuckerberg, a 19–year–old who created the biggest social media that changed the

Everyday millions of Americans plop down in front of their TVs to get their daily intake of news
and current events of what happened that day. Sadly, most of the news and facts they are getting
have been altered somehow by someone at the news corporation or by the reporters themselves. In

Bias in reporter's stories can be created a couple different ways. One of those possibilities is that
information is fabricated to reflect a news corporation's viewpoint as well as the bias they normally
present. The second is the fact that "a journalist can include in their story quotations from advocated
of particular perspective"(David Baron 4). By quoting these people in their stories journalist and
reporters all the advocates to "present their perspectives, make assertions and allegations, draw
conclusions, and argue for particular actions"(Baron 4). The public is also able to diagnose the root
